COMMUNITY NEWS Paris Christmas Hamper applications are now available

Submitted release: The Paris Community Christmas Hamper and Toy Drive committee is looking forward to another season of serving the community.

Applications for the Community Toy and Hamper program will be available starting November 1st at the County of Brant Service office, 66 Grand River St. N in Paris.

Monetary donations for which receipts will be issued can be made at the office. Donations of hats and mitts are also welcome.

Non-perishable food items and new toys can be dropped of at the County of Brant Service Office (Paris), LCBO, CIBC, TD, YNCU Credit Union and The Full Plate.

Once again, our local schools will be participating in our program by collecting items throughout November and December.

Our local Paris Firefighters Club and Ontario Provincial Police - West Region will be again working with the "Fill a Vehicle" program collecting non-perishable items and donations Dec. 9/10 and Dec.16/17 at No Frills, Sobeys, and Foodland in Burford and St. George.

COMMUNITY NEWS Council supports formation of new Government Relations Committee to strengthen provincial and federal relationships

By Casandra Turnbull One councillor is spearheading a proactive approach to stronger governance across the board by strengthening municipal, provincial and federal relationships to better represent the residents of Brant County.

At council last week, Ward 1 Councillor Jennifer Kyle presented a proposed resolution to form a Government Relations Committee with a primary goal of building a strategic approach to interacting with elected officials on all levels of government. Its purpose is warranted more than ever as Brantford-Brant’s growing federal electoral riding was subdivided into two last year to form Flamborough-Glanbrook-Brant North and Brantford-Brant South-Six Nations. Similar electoral changes will likely follow on the provincial level before 2026. With two sets of MPs and MPPs representing residents in Brant – a rapidly growing municipality of 40,000 now and projected to be 59,000 by 2051 – unified representation will be crucial.

“We have grown a lot and there is a lot more growing to do. To ensure we have the resources, services and infrastructure to support our residents, it will be important for council to not only make wise decisions for the community, but we will also need to have strong partners at all levels of government,” said Kyle.

As a newly elected councillor in 2022, Kyle said she’s spent the first year learning the ropes, attending conferences and observing. One thing that she’s really noticed is the lack of a coordinated approach to interacting with other elected officials, outside Brantford-Brant’s healthy relationship with MP Larry Brock and MPP Will Bouma.

COMMUNITY NEWS “When we are working on issues and projects, why aren’t we leveraging those relationships with all our elected officials? The more voices we have in our corner, could certainly help further our efforts,” she explained.

The official mandate of the committee would be to develop, coordinate, implement and monitor government relations, strategies, based on Council endorsed advocacy positions, with Members of the Provincial legislature, the Provincial Government, members of the parliament of Canada, the Government of Canda, and related to government agencies. The committee would organize meetings with elected officials and their staff, as well as community associations – for example the Association of Municipalities of Ontario – for the purpose of engaging strategies with these organizations. In her

resolution, Kyle suggested the Committee should be composed of the Mayor of the County of Brant, four councillors and the Chief Administrative Officer for Brant.

While the committee was discussed by council on October 24th, Councillor Robert Chambers suggested a slight amendment to the resolution to change the structure of the committee from six members to four members – consisting of the mayor, Councillor Kyle, the CAO and an appointed councillor named by Councillor Kyle and Mayor Bailey.

“One concern is that it’s been my experience that when you meet with ministers and organizations and members of parliament if you have to many people there it’s not as effective,” said Chambers, noting he fully supports the idea of the committee. Shrinking it from

six to four members makes the committee more streamlined and focussed, he added.

Chambers’ amendment motion was supported in a 6-5 vote. The amended resolution to form the committee was unanimously supported by council.

Meanwhile, Councillor Kyle hopes there is some positively that comes from the boundary changes.

“The two new ridings will bring us back together, particularly the little pieces of the county that had been annexed off to Cambridge and Oxford, often left feeling forgotten about,” said Kyle. “This committee is the first step in strengthening and, in some cases, establishing these strong relationships.”

Three Paris Horticultural Society members honoured for 20 years of dedicated service to community Three Paris Horticultural Society members were presented with pins and official certificates for their continuous service to the community. The presentation, by the Ontario Honours and Awards Secretariat of the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism, took place at the Best Western last month. In preparation for the winter season, the Roads Department will be removing the temporary speed humps and speed knockdown signs throughout the County.

The Speed Humps and Speed Signs are part of the County’s Brant Safe Streets strategy to calm traffic and create safer roads for everyone.

R E M E M B R A N C E D AY Flag raising ceremony signifies start of Poppy Campaign 2023

By Casandra Turnbull A flag raising ceremony at the Paris Legion on October 27th signified the start of the 2023 Poppy Campaign. Committee members from Branch 29 Legion made sure the Poppy donation boxes were placed in as many Paris businesses as possible where they will remain out until Remembrance Day on November 11th. Last year’s Poppy Campaign raised $21,000 locally.

The funds raised go directly to the Legion’s work to assist Canadian Veterans and their families and some of the funds are distributed to various education bursaries the Legion supports in this community. The Legion donates to the Homeless Veterans Fund, the Legion Bursary Fund, the Legion Charitable Foundation and the District B Hospital Fund. An example of supporting local veterans, Branch 29 President Donald MacLeod shared that branch members are currently supporting an 81 year old veteran who has numerous ongoing

R E M E M B R A N C E D AY Legion preparing for November 11th Remembrance Day ceremony at downtown Cenotaph

By Casandra Turnbull The Paris Remembrance Day Service will take place on a Saturday this year and ceremony organizers are already anticipating a larger crowd.

On Saturday, November Grand River Street North in downtown Paris will be closed at 10:30 am in preparation of Service. Legion President Donald MacLeod said this year there will be more speakers placed across the road from the cenotaph to give people further away the opportunity to hear the service if

they can’t get front and centre.

The rest of the Service will take place as it always does each year.

The Colour Guard will march in at 10:40 am, followed by guests of honour – veterans, first responders, Guides & Scouts, local dignitaries and the Ayr-Paris and Paris-Port Dover Pipe Band.

The Service, led by local man Dale Kitchen, starts with a moment of silence at 11 am.

In the interest of time, some wreathes will be placed ahead of time and wreathes from local service clubs, dignitaries and fallen soldiers, will be placed by

members during the service.

Children from area schools will perform O Canada, God Save the King and will recite in Flanders Fields.

A post service luncheon is open to the public at the Paris Legion (70 William Street in Paris). If the weather cooperates, the patio will be open as well.

If you plan to attend the Service, please arrive ahead of time as the OPP will close the streets by 10:30 am.

Nestled in a quaint corner of a part of Paris commonly referred to as the flats, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29 has a growing membership unlike many other branches across the country.

Over the last decade, Legion memberships have been on the decline. The pandemic put the nail in the coffin of many branches. In a 2020 CTV News Ottawa story, it was revealed that an estimated 124 of the 1,381 Royal Canadian Legion Branches across Canada were likely to close permanently, and another 357 were facing financial hardship.

Through the efforts of volunteers and a dedicated membership, Paris’ branch is alive and well with more than 320 members– the only foreseeable problem right now is that not too many residents are aware that the doors are open to everyone to pop in an enjoy a sports game on TV, have a drink, play a game of pool, join a sports league, attend a community BBQ or just stop

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29 since 1926

Continuing our new weekly series on longstanding establishments in Paris, it is an opportune moment to delve into the rich history of the Paris Legion and the Cenotaph, both of which have been integral parts of our downtown area since the 1930s.

In the aftermath of the First World War, several veterans' groups and associations representing former service members emerged.

Among them were those representing the approximately 600 men and women from the Paris region who had served during the war. Tragically, 91 of them lost their lives or suffered mortal wounds, and an additional 4 succumbed to diseases or accidents. A significant number of these casualties, 18 in total, occurred after August 20, 1918, during the final allied offensive.

According to the Star Transcript, the last Parisian to make the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of freedom and justice was Private William English, who was killed on October 18, 1918. It is worth noting that William Street, commemorates his name and 70 William St. is the ancestral home of Franklin Smoke. Born on

August 24, 1860, (in South Dumfries Township) Franklin Smoke was a Conservative member of the House of Commons of Canada. Smoke pursued a career as a barrister after attending public and secondary schools in Paris, Ontario. He furthered his education at Osgoode Hall Law School and was appointed King's Counsel in 1908. Although his bid for provincial office in the 1919 Ontario election proved unsuccessful, Smoke achieved success in the 1925 Federal election, securing a parliamentary seat for the Brant riding. He was re-elected in 1926 and 1930 but faced defeat in the 1935 election.

Initially, the Legion's primary objective was to give a strong voice to First World War veterans.

However, the outbreak of the Second World War brought forth new challenges. Consequently, the Legion expanded its efforts to provide dedicated support to veterans and those currently serving abroad. Today, the Legion continues its mission of enhancing the lives of veterans, including the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, as well as their families. "This has been their core objective since their establishment, and they remain steadfast in their commitment to it, both today and in the future."

Rifles, a choir of 300 elementary school pupils, the high school pupils, and citizens. After the address of welcome by Mayor Isaac Stewart, Lt.-Col. the Venerable Archdeacon F.G. Scott delivered the dedicatory speech. The dedicatory prayer was

delivered by Major the Reverend W. F. McConnell .

Victory – it tastes so good!

Could it be that the U11 Rep hockey team just really loves chocolate milk? Is that what fueled the players’ motivation to clobber their competition and bring home the championship banner?

The team, sponsored by Pelton Transportation, attended the Prince Edward County Milk Tournament last weekend and despite a slow start, they returned home with Gold.

After each win, the Dairy Farmers of Ontario donated chocolate milk to the winning team. Unfortunately for Paris, the team would have to wait until Saturday play to taste it. After a game one loss on Friday night, the team pulled together and were unstoppable the rest of the tournament. They scored a whopping 46 goals throughout the next few games and only 14 goals got past Paris’ goalie, Will Balkwill.

‘Will the Wall,’ as he’s known, dominated in the final game holding on to a 9-0 shutout as Paris cruised to victory over the Brighton Bolts. Congratulations team.

The first period of the October 20th match between the Tavistock Braves and the Paris Titans, was an entertaining display of hockey ending in a Titan goal to tie the score at one. Goalie Josh Roman was steady in goal and Tyler Crisostomo potted the tying goal.

The second period started off with Tavistock scoring a goal in the first 10 seconds of the period. By the 4:45 mark the Titans got derailed with avoidable penalties and over the next two periods, they collected Unsportsmanlike Conduct, Roughing, Fighting, and Disrespectful/Abusive Behaviour penalties. No doubt their opponents were as guilty with their own list of infractions, but for the Titans to win, they have to keep their heads up and avoid penalties that put the team at a disadvantage on the ice.

In the end, the Titans lost the game 7-3.

On October 21st, the Titans visited the Hespeler Shamrocks with a shortened bench likely due to suspensions, added another loss to their record, with 4-2 score. Simon Otaki and Eathen Bush scored Paris’ goals.

The Paris Titans are taking a lot of avoidable penalties and it’s putting the young team at a disadvantage.

Goalie Ryan Burroughs was steady and calm in net, stopping 36 of 37 shots on net and Tyler Crisostomo scoring two goals, one of them being a short-handed goal on a penalty kill.

Crisostomo, currently the team leading scorer, feels that more wins are coming and a climb in in the standings is inevitable. based on a dressing room full of players that are still remaining positive on their ability to get wins together and catch up the team that are ahead in the standings.

Other scorers were Bhrett Hibbert and Oen Lalonde.

The Hespeler Shamrocks came back to Paris on October 27th and this time Paris secured the 4-1 win. Hespeler is back in Paris again tonight, at the Brant Sports Complex, puck drops at 7:30 pm.

Wednesday evening was the first of many fundraising events by and for the Paris Performers’ Theatre: a trivia night hosted, at The Paris Pub, by The Spin-ster to raise funds for their 2024 theatrics and theatrical season.

The event was sold out almost a week in advance and all the attendees brought great energy and a healthy dose of competitive edge.

The amazing staff at The Paris Pub worked their butts off and made the entire evening seamless while The Spin-ster created a game that was both challenging and charming; extra love to The Paris Pub staff who donated their tips and time to support this fundraiser. It was great to see so much support for this longstanding community group! Make sure you keep an eye on Paris Performers’ Theatre as they work hard to build back

strong, this long standing institution, after facing tricky times. With a refreshed roster of board members and refocused energies, their 2024 will be all about fundraising and raising the profile of the company in Paris, Brant and beyond!

It is all a bunch of Hocus Pocus!

The Paris Lion’s Club brought their food truck to the Brantwood Farms Fall Fest in September and October to help raise funds for the local Service Club. Volunteers can agree it’s been a lot of fun watching families enjoy the season, but they were in for a frightful delight on October 29th when the Sanderson Sisters (aka the Glass Slipper Company) took over the trailer to cast a fun spell over the volunteers. Nonetheless the food was said to be enchanting!

Trunk or Treat event a GROWE-ing success!

A special fundraiser to support GROWE Outdoor School’s Scholarship Fund was an overwhelming success, says School Principal Tara Carpenter. As you can see, there wasn’t a shortage of tricker treaters dressed up to participate in the fun – and the trunks they visited were quite creative as well. KIDS’ CORNER The Halloween version of the Paris Fair: Colton’s Family Fun Farm!

Colton’s Fun Farm is the more Halloween-festive version of the Paris Fair but smaller and with many more games and activities.

From the spooky large corn maze to the challenging ball toss, you’re sure in for a treat coming to the farm. There’s even a pumpkin patch, so if it’s on your bucket list to visit one get ready to squash some goals. Here are some highlights from my visit to this fun farm.

Challengingly Cool Corn Maze Here’s a challenge for you: try to say the title out loud three times without fumbling! Anyway, back to the farm. At the back of the establishment, there was a large corn maze that dared visitors to enter to navigate the twists and turns. Around the labyrinth, there are checkpoints scattered around at the dead ends for you to mark on the card you’ve been given at the entrance. It’s a bit hard to find all of them but still fun because at the end you could see how many checkpoints you’ve

Other Spooky Activities Obviously, those ones aren’t the only activities at Colton’s Fun Farm. There’s a game of Tic Tac Toe using wooden silhouette cutouts of phantoms and witch hats that is loads of fun. In front of that are jumbo-sized puzzles of different art pieces based off Halloween with a reference picture to guide you, so you don’t mess up. There’s also one of my favourite activities there in which you have to put a golf ball on a block of wood and then you have to pull it up a wall and dodge the holes in the wall. It’s basically like mini golf but on a surface and you’re pulling back so it goes up. It’s a battle of strength and wits!

KIDS’ CORNER Drop-in youth centre returns to Paris’ Syl Apps Community Centre

The County of Brant conducted a Youth Needs Survey this year where respondents commonly identified the desire to see a youth centre in Paris. Armed with that information and coupled by the fact that there’s an obvious absence in this type of programming, the Brant Youth Centre has reopened in Paris.

Unfortunately, the program was relocated to the Scotland Community Centre due to low attendance. It operated in Scotland until this past spring. The move to Paris fits the community request and is timely because enrollment numbers in Scotland were not sustainable.
