COMMUNITY NEWS Residents concerned about increased traffic and safety in their neighbourhood

By Casandra Turnbull More than 100 concerned residents living in the Highland and Nith Peninsula subdivisions in Paris are protesting the County of Brant’s changes to Dundas Street, citing they will significantly increase traffic and safety concerns in their neighbourhood.

The group of approximately 123 residents, led by Martin McCaffrey and Ian Robertson, believe there will be severe implications if the county proceeds with plans to route a majority of traffic coming from Lion’s Park and the new 540-unit Losani subdivision through their residential neighbourhood - down Dundas Street West to new traffic lights going in at King Edward Street.

These changes were prompted by what will be a significant increase in traffic as Losani homes begins construction on a new residential neighbourhood on Barker’s Bush.

Losani was required to complete a Traffic Impact Study (TIS) detailing how the additional traffic generated from the new development would impact the existing streets and intersections in the area. Brant County staff worked with a traffic consultant to review viable solutions.

Highlights from the RPT stipulate the developer must construct a roundabout on Dundas Street at the entrance to the subdivision by spring 2024. Once it’s in place, the county will remove the all-way stop at Zavarella Court. Traffic signals will be installed at the west intersection of Dundas St W and King Edward St and a ‘porkchop’ curb will go in on the easterly end of Dundas Street and King Edward Street. This will enforce traffic to make right turn outs only from Dundas, which also means all traffic leaving Lions Park can only turn right onto King Edward Street East. To head west

towards downtown, motorists will detour down Dundas Street West, through the roundabout and hit the new lights at the end of Dundas Street West to make a left-hand turn.

Both McCaffrey and Robertson presented the group’s concerns, along with a well supported petition, during a delegation at the Tuesday, Nov. 28th council meeting.

“While we understand the necessity of addressing traffic concerns, we are deeply concerned about the potential removal of a stop sign, and road design issues,” said Robertson in an email to the Paris Independent a few days before the council meeting.

Robertson and McCaffrey brought the petition to council and asked that they conduct a thorough review of the additional options presented during the Traffic Study – such as traffic lights at the easterly and westerly portion of Dundas / King Edward, creating a road through a portion of the cemetery grounds, keeping the all-way stop in place, and exploring traffic calming measures. Removing the all-way stop sign, they say, is unsafe for several reasons – it removes access for pedestrians to cross the road and creates a dangerous situation because of poor sightlines for both pedestrians and vehicles leaving Zavarella Court.

COMMUNITY NEWS Fond reflection of life on Coney Island Paris!

To the Editor: I always look forward to reading the Paris Independent on Saturday mornings, to learn the latest news of the town where I was born and grew up.

I especially enjoy Chris Whelan’s historical columns, including this week’s “Paris: A Town of many Names and Locals."

He writes of Barker’s Bush, where my father, Fred Bemrose, often played as a boy. There, he would swim at “First and Second Clay,” popular swimming spots on the great oxbow of the Nith River as it swung into town. Some people would venture out to "Devil’s Cave" on the river, to swim and picnic.

(It wasn’t much of a cave, more of a crack in the limestone, but the spot drew many Parisians going back to the town’s earliest days).

Dad grew up at 32 Mechanic Street on Coney Island (the house, which stood next to the old Town Yard, has since been torn down), while I lived as a young boy at 18 West River. To the people who lived on “Coney Island,” the neighbourhood did not include the downtown business section, as Chris’s column implied, but was separated from the stores by the Wincey Mill race, which left the main raceway described by Chris, and ran south parallel with Broadway to the Wincey Mill.

This left a small isolated neighbourhood of no more than two dozen houses— small, but with fierce local pride and its own cast of colourful characters. Coney Islanders had access to Barker’s Bush via a footbridge at the west end of Mechanic. This simple bridge was frequently swept away by spring floods but was rebuilt each year by the co-operative efforts of the neighbourhood. Of course, for many years now a permanent bridge has taken its place.

Traffic disruptions expected during tonight’s Santa Claus Parade – be prepared Please avoid parking on the streets listed below as during the parade/staging they will be shut down and parked cars will be blocked until the parade is over.

The staging area will be closed from approximately 4:30pm to 7:00pm – that area includes: -Ball Street (Between Main Street and Grand River Street South) -Burwell Street (Between Dundas Street West and Grand River Street South) - Arnold Street (Between Dundas Street West and Grand River Street South.

Downtown angle parking on Grand River Street North will be closed from 5:30pm until approximately 8:00pm.

Any parked cars will be blocked until the Parade is over, so just don’t park downtown later this afternoon! Paris High School parking lots will also be blocked for demobilization of floats.

Please consider an alternative route to get from the North end to the South end during the parade. The Paris Firefighters have suggested using Silver Street to Keg Lane, left onto Brant Oxford Road and left onto King Edward Street (at Falkland). Dress warm and bring that holiday cheer – the long awaited for event is finally here!

COMMUNITY NEWS Santa Claus draws a sold-out crowd to annual Kiwanis Breakfast The Kiwanis Club of Paris Brant held their 7th annual Kiwanis Breakfast with Santa on November 25th at St. James Parish Hall on Burwell Street. Both sittings, with a capacity of 80 each, sold out two weeks in advance of the event. There were over 15 Kiwanian volunteers and their families that helped to make the day extra special for the kids. The Kiwanis Club hosts this event annually, not as a fundraiser, but to give back to the community. Gracious sponsors cover most of the event’s costs. COMMUNITY NEWS County of Brant names Darryl Lee as Chief Executive Officer of Brant Municipal Enterprises County of Brant, ON – The County of Brant is pleased to announce that Darryl Lee will be appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Brant Municipal Enterprises (BME) starting January 2024.

“We are grateful for the return of Darryl to the County of Brant as the Chief Executive Officer of Brant Municipal Enterprises,” said Alison Newton, Chief Administrative Officer for the County of Brant. “Darryl brings extensive municipal experience and knowledge, and we look forward to watching his successes grow.”

Darryl Lee, a resident of Paris, Ontario, has 33 years in public service and an impressive background in municipal government holding managerial positions at the City of Hamilton and ultimately the Chief Administrative Officer position at the

City of Brantford. In 2022, he was appointed as the Interim Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the County of Brant to assist in the recruitment for a permanent Chief Administrative Officer.

“As the Chair of the Board of Directors for Brant Municipal Enterprises I look forward to having Darryl leading the helm,” said County of Brant Mayor David Bailey. “Darryl earned the trust and respect of County of Brant Council throughout his tenure as Interim Chief Administrative Officer, and we are excited to see what the future holds for him with Brant Municipal Enterprises.”

Brant joins fight to end gender-based violence On November 29th the County of Brant raised the Wrapped in Courage flag to show support and bring awareness to end gender-based violence in our community. The Wrapped in Courage campaign has adopted the purple scarf as its symbol.

This week, County of Brant Council voted unanimously to declare gender-based violence and/or intimate partner violence an epidemic and to demand action from all levels of government.

Councillor Jennifer Kyle brought forward the recommendation, noting more than 72 municipalities and regions across Ontario have declared this an epidemic. Members of Nova Vita Brant, County of Brant Council and the public attended the flag-raising to show support for this important issue in our community.

COMMUNITY NEWS Paris Museum’s Victory Bond Dance recounts stories of locals during the First and Second World Wars The Victory Bond Dance, a Paris Museum Fundraiser, held at Legion Branch 29 on November 25th, boasted a full house.

The first part of the evening was a combination of a pub-style 40's era singalong led by local musician, Ian Bell, interspersed with short dramatic vignettes telling the stories of Paris individuals during both wars.

One story was about a baby shoe that belonged to Joseph Bradbury (a former mayor), which travelled through much of the first war with his father, who took it along as a remembrance of home. When Walter Bradbury was killed in the final months of the war, the shoe returned with the rest of his effects to his wife, Lillian.

Another true story concerned Fred Oldham, who, in WWI, suffered shrapnel to his chest, but was saved by the pay record and his book of notes from Camp Borden, that slowed the shrapnel down enough that it didn't reach his heart. Sadly, his son, Fernley Oldham was lost on a training flight in Alberta in WWII.

The third story was about some of the roles of women during the wars, including Annie Broughton, who struck up correspondence with many soldiers during WWII, initially through the Overseas League Hamper and Tobacco Fund, where she and her sister sent off cigarettes. When Annie died, over 500 letters were donated to the museum from her house, some from the soldiers, whose lives were brightened by having a friend to write to, and some letters from Annie, that were returned from the front when their addressee was no longer alive.

L O C A L H I S TO RY Reviving the beloved tradition of the Paris Santa Claus Parade

Growing up in this area and moving to Paris as a teen, I had always experienced the joy and excitement of this festive event, unaware of its rich history dating back to the early 20th century.

The first recorded mention of Christmas in Paris can be traced back to a newspaper article from December 1929. The town was celebrating its second annual town Christmas Tree, adorned in the town square (this became the cenotaph in 1930). Santa Claus himself would visit the tree, distributing gifts to the children, followed by a free matinee at the nearby Capital Theatre. Little did the residents know that this would mark the beginning of a cherished tradition that would endure for decades.

The festivities would kick off in the morning at the PERA room located at Penman's #2mill on Willow Street. The parade would then traverse the town, crossing the William Street bridge and making its way through downtown via William Street, Broadway Street, Mechanic Street, Year after year, Santa Claus would Grand River Street, Emily Street, and make his grand entrance into back to Broadway Street before downtown Paris, captivating the finally landing at the Theatre. hearts of both young and old.

It is estimated that around 1,200 to 1,300 bags of candy were distributed during the parade each year.

In 1957, the Capitol Theatre closed its doors, marking the end of an era.

However, Santa Claus found a new destination for his arrival—Christmas Island, also known as Kings Ward Park. This tradition continued until 1966 when Penman's sponsorship ceased, and the parade came to a halt.

The absence of the Santa Claus Parade left a void in the hearts of Paris residents, and Christmas in the town would never be the same.

Until… in 1985, a determined organizer named Dale Maidens decided it was time to bring back the cherished tradition. After an 18-year hiatus, the Paris Santa Claus Parade returned to the delight of the community. Maidens worked tirelessly to revive the spirit of the parade, ensuring that the magic of Christmas would once again fill the streets of Paris.

S P O RT S U9 Team 2 downs Burford 9-6, tops day off with intermission show at Paris Titans game

By Casandra Turnbull It was a fast moving and physical match up against the Paris Wolfpack U9 team 2 and the Burford Coyotes last Saturday afternoon.

The Coyotes were in town for the first time this season and the Wolfpack were ready to defend.

The game was off to a quick start with a Burford marker minutes into play, but Paris replied when Ben Turnbull grabbed the puck and dumped it in unassisted to tie the game.

Paris put another on the scoreboard when Sebastian Hand, fed by Jace Allgood, put one away to give the team its first lead of the game.

Davis Starks added to that lead as he fired one over the goalie’s shoulder making it 31.

Burford snagged a goal at the 6:20 mark of the first period, followed by another goal a minute later to tie the game at 3.

Determined to stay ahead in the first, Maddy Mendoza passed to Lucas Wilkinson, who scored to bring the Wolfpack back up 4-3. It the first drawing to a close, Allgood fired off a mighty slapshot to give the Wolfpack at 5-3 lead.

Burford would respond once again to close the first period out 5-4 in favour of the Wolfpack.

The second and final period (U9 local league plays two 22-minute periods) started off with a bang as Burford took care of a loose puck out front of the net and tied the game, but that would be all they could do until the very end of this period.

S P O RT S Paris went on a scoring spree from here on out. After many attempts, Austin Meza positioned himself in the right spot to grab hold of the put and skate it in put Paris up 6-5.

Wilkinson lifted the puck top shelf to add to Paris’ lead. Seconds later he tipped in his third of the game to give Paris a comfortable 8-5 lead. With less than 30 seconds on the clock, Buford scored, but Allgood responded on the very next play to tuck one more in to end the game 9-6.

Mason Espinola, Sloan Gal, Henry Bartscher and Liam Arsenault chased the puck relentlessly and

made several key passes. Brennan Dane was sharp as ever on defence, while Levi Blake made several show-stopping saves in net to stay on top of an aggressive Coyotes’ offense. Well done team 2!

The excitement poured into the evening as the team put on a mini game during the intermission of the Paris Titans home game. The crowd was amused by the talents of these young players and perhaps they brought a bit of luck from their afternoon game with them as the Titans went on to win 5-3 against the Norwich Merchants.

S P O RT S Grey Cup 2023: Refreshing weekend spent with friends watching good Canadian style football and taking in great Canadian music!

Grey Cup Report with George Le Gresley

I have travelled to at least 30 Grey Cup Festivals so far. I love football, be it the style of football south of the border and here in Canada. Personally, I have been a Toronto Argonaut fan (to all you Ti-Cat fans, I know we suck) since I was a teenager, so when the favoured and my beloved Argonauts were upset in the Eastern final, there was no doubt I was heartbroken. Thankfully I had three days in Hamilton at the Grey Cup Festival.

Back to Hamilton……….the city hosted this festival in 2021 at the end The Grey Cup is a unique event of the covid epidemic, when there in Canada, as it is the only were still fears of large gatherings, event where Canadians from whether we should be masked, social across this vast country and distanced in the stadium, at bars and those from outside the country restaurants. All in all, that Grey Cup and in particular a fan from understandably didn’t meet Australia meet in a different expectations. Now, 2023, things got city every year. Paris man George Le Gresley (and noticeably our sports contributor!) got his hands on the Grey Cup last weekend in Hamilton. It was his 30th Grey Cup Festival, a tradition that brings together good friends and classic Canadian football. He shared his experience with The Paris Independent.

Game time and a crowd with small groups cheering for Winnipeg and Montreal and the majority wishing that their home team were playing in the game. The first half of the game was not that competitive with Winnipeg having a 10 point lead. Halftime featured a half time show by Green Day with a four song set that amped up the crowd for the second half. In the end Montreal won the game in the last few minutes, with plenty of hugs and high fives with the Montreal fans sitting around us.

In the end the end the best part of the three days was hanging with new and old friends, catching up on each other, laughing telling stories and plenty of farewell hugs until next year.

COMMUNITY NEWS It was a busy fall season for the Paris Horticultural Society At this time of year, as our gardens are put to bed for the coming winter, our activities are winding down.

At the OHA Convention this past July, the society earned First Place Ribbons in both the bookmark and the brochures categories. The design of these articles was a team effort.

Our Adopt a Road program has done the last clean up on Keg Lane. This one took place on September 13th, right after the Paris Fair. This is usually the biggest cleanup of the season. The hard-working team members include Kim Hutton, Patti Gladding, Pat Hasler-Watts, Pat Moore, Edith Stone, Anne Vernon, Nancy Chipman and Paula Atkinson. (Photo by Serryn Stephenson).

The work in our community gardens has also drawn to a close for the winter.

The gardens have been cleaned up. Coordinators Doug Hanna and Dave Collins do a good job of keeping the weeding, mulching and planting up to date, with the help of other volunteers.

The Hillside Garden at the fairgrounds was enhanced with 13 varieties, totalling 123 plants. There is no vacancy at the nearby “Bee” hotel.

BIG floats and BIG fun at Brantford Santa Claus Parade FROM A KID’S PERSPECTIVE With Paris’ Stephen L

The winter holidays were celebrated at the Brantford Santa Claus Parade, a wonderful kidfriendly evening event, on Brantford’s main street!

It showcased so many amazing floats from the Grinch on top of a shed to Santa Claus and his magical reindeer, you have no i-deer! Here are some wonderful highlights that I included here from the 47th annual Brantford Santa Claus Parade.

Big Floats and Big Fun Tigercat, a company that specializes in forestry machinery, arrived at the parade towing what appeared to be a snow plow decorated with Christmas lights. I thought of it as a pretty smart way of showcasing their machinery yet fitting the subject simultaneously.

Brantford’s very own Twin Valley Zoo also made an entry into the festive parade displaying their winter wonderland with giant candy canes, Christmas trees, and even snowmen! It was fun to look at and they even came with zookeepers giving multiple assortments of

Their float had the classic Grinch sitting on top of a small barn. Who would’ve thought that he would appear at the Santa Claus parade? I guess he came in the Saint Nick of time!

Brantford’s BRISC, a community that empowers urban indigenous people, came with a very elegant float made of strong materials with soft Christmas lights decorated all over that looked incredible and appealing! They were performing native songs for an audience of families from all over Brant.
