Grace MOPS brings local mothers together
On June 15, the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce awarded Hannah Bahney with the Shining Star award for her efforts to establish a local Mothers of Preschoolers group.
“Fulton County is blessed by your efforts to create a space for mothers to come together, build friendships and encourage one another through life,” said Chamber Executive Director Jillian Smith of Bahney.
MOPS is an international organization formed in 1973 when a group of moms with young children banded together to share their lives and parenting journeys. These days, MOPS is also partnering with churches and organizations worldwide to equip and encourage moms in more than 68 countries, according to its website, mops.org.
Bahney, who is the mother of three girls, was first introduced to the group when she moved to Michigan a few years ago. “I was a stay-at-home mom, and I didn’t know anyone,” she recalled.
That changed soon after joining MOPS. “I met people and became involved in the commu-
nity. … It was a big change for our family.”
This profound experience inspired Bahney to “pay it forward” later when her family moved to Fulton County. And in 2022, she was able to start Grace MOPS, which drew 43 mothers over the course of the year to their monthly meetings at Rochester Grace United Methodist Church.
Bahney acknowledged receiving help from other moms when forming the local MOPS, including Ashlie Smith and Erin Reason. Reason, who has three young sons, assumed the group’s accounting responsibilities.
“There are not a lot of opportunities to get together with other moms,” said Reason of being the mother of young children. These women are often responsible for the majority of childrearing, which can be an isolating experience.
“It’s a tough season of life,” she noted, and with MOPS, mothers are able to “commiserate together and know we’re not alone.”
Reason cited one member’s feedback response, which stated MOPS “came at a really good time.”
Each meeting usually features a speaker and a topic. A recent meeting featured a mediContinued on page 3

Amber Dyson’s name lives on through scholarship
In 2005, Rick O’Neill moved to Rochester from his native upstate New York to work, first with Dean Foods and then Shambaugh & Son, where he is the national food group manager. From the beginning, he was impressed with how welcoming the community was, and it was not long before he was an active Optimist Club member. He also met his future wife, Deanna, and her family, including Deanna’s daughter, Amber Dyson.
“She was like a daughter,” O’Neill recalled. So it was just that much harder when, in 2020, Amber died at age 43 from cancer.
In April 2019 Dyson, a mother of four and registered pulmonary function technician at Howard Community Hospital in Kokomo, had been diagnosed with breast cancer. While undergoing three rounds of chemotherapy, she continued her work as head of the PFT department along with raising her three younger children.
After regular chemo, a double mastectomy, 32 radiation rounds of radiation treatment and a hysterectomy, it looked as if Dyson was in the clear.
“Amber was told she was all
clean,” said O’Neill; however, two weeks later the cancer had metastasized to her bones and brain. She died on April 17, 2020. Since then, the O’Neills have raised Dyson’s children: Lucas, now 12; Lucinda, 11; and Dexter, 6. Her oldest, Dawson, is now 22. “It has been a blessing,” he added.
Following Dyson’s passing, the O’Neills were approached by fellow Optimists about how the club might help the family financially. However, Rick and Deanna had another idea for how Amber could be remembered.
“During Amber’s sickness her church — Church of the Heartland in Rochester — friends and strangers were so kind with meals, money, friendship and prayers,” said Rick. He recalled one instance when a complete stranger at a swim meet overheard her talking about chemo and handed her a $100 bill. “Amber had told me more than once that when she was better she was going to pay it forward.”
A graduate of IU Vincennes, Dyson’s career goal had been to teach others in the medical field. So with the help of the Optimist Club’s pancake breakfast fund-
raisers, the Northern Indiana Community Foundation and many others in the community, the O’Neills were able to set up the Amber Dyson Scholarship.
The scholarship, which is now overseen by NICF, provides a graduate of Rochester, Caston or Tippecanoe Valley high Schools with $1,000 for up to four years of schooling in the medical field. And thanks to the outpouring of support over the last three years, the scholarship is already self-sustaining.
“I never expected it to go so well,” said Rick. Because of COVID, the first pancake breakfast
fundraiser was not held until 2021, but subsequent events have consistently raised over $8,000 each. O’Neill also noted how the Dyson scholarship fits neatly among the Optimists many efforts helping young people.
The scholarship’s first recipient was Emma Stinson, who is now in her second year at IU Kokomo.
“There’s a lot of people I need to thank,” said O’Neill, including Rochester Iron & Metal, Church of the Heartland and many others. “I’m humbled to say the least.”

MOPS has also taken trips to area establishments, including Zellers Beautiful Blooms, Elemental Art Studio and the Outlet Youth Center, which hosted a bingo event, “just fun stuff,” Bahney commented.
The meetings also include a craft or activity. Currently, the meetings are just for moms; however, Bahney is looking forward to next year, when they will provide child care, which will enable some members to at-

Another regular feature of the meetings are “mentor moms,” those with grown children, who help give the younger members encouragement and advice. The meetings also provide information on community resources for moms.
According to Bahney, the group provided 38 meals in 2022-23 for members who had babies or underwent surgery.
MOPS’ regular meetings run from August to May, during the school year, and a planning session will be held in the coming weeks to plot next year’s events. One upcoming speaker will be Kelly Gard of Good Life Counseling, a former Rochester
Schools counselor.
Bahney expressed gratitude for the “community support” MOPS has received. Membership is $32 per year, which goes to the international organization, but much of the group’s supplies and activities have been funded through the Fulton County Community Foundation and Grace Church. She added MOPS is also looking for sponsorship for child care as well as individual moms’ dues.
“It’s been great,” enthused Bahney about the group’s early success. “I don’t take it for granted. We took a leap of faith … I’m grateful people gave it a shot.”

Karen A. Winterrowd
Winterrowd Electric Co-owner
Karen A. Winterrowd, 87, Rochester, passed away at 11:18 p.m. Thursday, June 22, 2023, at her residence.
On Feb. 1, 1936, Karen Ann Westwood was born at 406 Ohio St., Rochester, in the home that her grandfather, Abraham Shuman, built. She was the treasured daughter of Fred A. and Ruth S. Shuman Westwood. Growing up she shared her childhood with an older brother, Randy. Karen graduated with the Rochester High School class of 1953, where she served as secretary. Following high school, she continued her formal education at the South Bend College of Commerce, where she earned an associates degree in business.
Karen and Robert Winterrowd were married on Oct. 3, 1954, in the (E.U.B.) Trinity United Methodist Church of Rochester. They shared 57 years of life’s adventures. Sadly, he passed away on May 20, 2012. From their union came a handsome son, Jeff, and three beautiful daughters, Jennifer, Julie and Jody. The family tree grew with the addition of five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
With a diverse interest in serving the public, Karen was the bookkeeper for Gast Furniture & Appliances, secretary to the manager of Dean Foods, then worked at Burger Dairy Store, all of Rochester. For 36 years Karen was co-owner with Bob of Winterrowd Electric, also keeping the books. Karen’s memberships include Burton-Richland Center United Methodist Church, 15-year member of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, past member of the Lioness Club and chief organizer of the class of 1953 reunions every five years since graduation.
The Winterrowd’s enjoyed traveling and vacationing. A favorite location was England, where they visited their pen pals and discovered the essence and beauty of the English flower gardens. On their return home, they transformed their yard into an English garden like those found across the pond. Their gardens emitted such radiant beauty that they opened the gardens for summer tours, “Open Garden Day,” hosting 100+ at each event.
Talented with her hands, Karen was a gifted artist expressing herself with watercolors. She also enjoyed basket weaving, gardening, all types of needlework and writing to her pen pals in England. Karen collected unique pieces of glassware and, best of all, spending time with friends.
Left to cherish Karen’s memory are a son, Jeff Winterrowd and wife Michelle of Rochester; three daughters, Julie Bruessel and husband Jim of Medford, Minn., Jenny Adams and husband Andy and Jody Winterrowd and partner Jeremy Taylor, all of Rochester; five grandchildren, Jordyn Caudle and fiance Richard Howson, Jarrad Bruessel and fiancée Katie Villwock, Kelsey Christensen and husband Micah, Samuel Adams and wife Alana and Ryder Winterrowd; two great-grandchildren, Eloise Adams and Westwood Adams; a special niece, Jill Westwood Sowder; a brother-inlaw, Garry Winterrowd; and two sisters-in-law, Jacksie Reiken and Martha Winterrowd.
Preceding Karen in death are her parents, Fred and Ruth Westwood; beloved husband, Bob; a niece, Susan Franzen; and her brother, Randall Westwood, and his wife, Carol.
A celebration of the life of Karen Ann Winterrowd will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 30, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Pastor Steve Hartman will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Interment will be in Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
Preferred memorials may be made to the Burton-Richand Center United Methodist Church, 6990 N. 150W, Rochester, IN 46975 or the Arbor Day Foundation, 211 N. 12th St., Lincoln, NE 68508.

RSVP (RETIRED & SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM) OF FULTON CO. IS PLANNING 4 UPCOMING TRIPS!!
Let’s study the Bible
What makes Christianity different?
(Read: Luke chapter 24)
“He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee.”
(Luke 24:6)
Something distinguishes Christianity from all the religions of the world. Not only does it carry the truth of the redemption, by the death of our Savior for our sins on the cross, but it carries the fact that Christ rose again.
The women who had lingered at the cross and seen the burial were the first at the tomb when the Sabbath was ended. They were worried about how to open the tomb (Mark 16:1-3), only to discover that the tomb was not only open but empty!
The body of Jesus was not there!
An angel had come and rolled the stone away (Matthew 28:2). On entering the tomb, they saw two angels (Mark mentions only one — see Mark 16:5) who told them that Jesus was alive and risen from the dead. Had they remembered Jesus’ words, they would have saved themselves a great deal of sorrow (Matthew 17:9, 22-23; 20:17-19; John 2:19-22).
The first ambassadors of the resurrection message were the devoted women who were faithful to Jesus. They gave the message to the 11 apostles who did not believe it! Did the apostles think that the women were deceived or delirious? Peter and John ran to examine the evidence (Luke 24:12; John 20:1-18), but this left them bewildered. What a difference it would have made had the believers only remembered and believed his promises!
Then Jesus himself appeared in the Upper Room, despite of locked doors (John 20:19-25). Instead of welcoming him and rejoicing, the believers were terrified, afraid, and troubled; so Jesus assured them that it was he and that he was alive. The wounds (not “scars”) on his hands and feet (Psalm 22:16) and in his side (John 20:20) were identification enough. By eating some fish and honey he proved that he was not a phantom. His resurrection body had flesh and bones (Luke 24:39) and yet could appear and vanish and even go through solid closed doors.
During that meeting, Jesus gave them his peace (Luke 24:36), the assurance of his real presence, and a new understanding of the Scriptures (Luke 24:45). During his years with them, he had taught
them much from the word; but now he gave them insight into what the Old Testament said about him and his redemptive ministry.
Only the Christian faith claims that its leader died and rose again and is alive at this moment. Many gravestones carry the inscription, “Here lies…,” but on Christ’s tomb are emblazoned the words, “He is not here.” Christianity has no shrines to visit, no dusty remains to admire, no tombs at which to worship. Many good men have lived, and still live, in the memory of those who knew them, but there is only one man who conquered death — Jesus Christ — and he (the Son of God) will live forever.

Test drive an electric vehicle July 6
Last November Fulton County REMC had the opportunity to purchase two electric vehicles from Rochester Ford. A Lightning pickup truck and a Mustang Mach-E.
The cooperative’s aim is to introduce its membership and the community to the world of electric vehicles by organizing electric vehicle test drive events in the different communities, it serves.
A test drive event will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, July 6, at Rochester Community High School, in the student parking area.
This will be open to the community. The community is encouraged to come out and ask questions and take one or both vehicles on a test drive.
Fulton County REMC hopes to spark enthusiasm and awareness about electric vehicles.
The first test drive event took place in May in Winamac and was a great event full of great questions and test drives of both vehicles.
Following the Rochester event, there will be one more stop in the test drive tour and that will be from 4-6 p.m. Aug. 3, at Akron Community Center.

All three of his passions will come together in a memorial ride for him during the Akron Fourth of July parade.
and ask people pay $25 to participate. Monies will go to the Dillon Prater Memorial Fund being created through the Northern Indiana Community Foundation to benefit kids in the Akron area.
Jennifer said she wants the memorial fund to cover medical expenses for area kids as well as needs like coats and boots.
Dear Friends and Family,
It is with a cheerful heart that we invite you to attend the dedication service for Fletchers Lake Church and its new members. We will be celebrating our journey as an independent church with pastor David Sommers. Following the services we will gather in the basement for cake and punch. Please join us.
Anyone from the public is welcome to ride in a UTV, golf cart, motorcycle, Jeep or any other vehicle in the event, which begins at 11 a.m. July 4 and goes down Rochester and Mishawaka Streets.

His parents, Anthony and Jennifer Prater, organized the ride
People may sign up for the ride by messaging the Praters at Anthony Jennifer Prater on Facebook or calling them at (574) 5051058.
Jennifer said people may even show up the day of to enter. Lineup for the parade starts at 9 a.m. July 4 at Sonoco off SR 19.

Akron Festival
Akron 4th of July festivities have begun
This year’s Akron Fourth of July Festival aims to transport people back to the 1970s.
“Take Me Back to the ’70s” is the theme. One of the organizers of the event, Akron Clerk-Treasurer Rebecca Hartzler, said it was chosen related to this year’s parade grand marshals, Shirley Bickel and Ruby Bowers, who both opened beauty shops 50 years ago in 1973.
Activities started on June 22, with voting for the Akron Las Donas Club’s Penny-a-Vote Cute Baby Contest. That runs through Saturday, July 1, at Lake City Bank in Akron.
On July 1, Young Entrepreneur Day returns to Lake City Bank from 9-11 a.m. Kids are given $10 to start a business, with them selling items during that time period.
The winners of the Cute Baby Contest will be announced at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at the Akron Community Center. Following at 5:30 p.m. are the Miss Sparkler and Mr. Firecracker contests and the Miss Akron Fourth of July pageant.
Tuesday, July 4, includes multiple events. The Henry Township Fire Department has its firemen’s pancake breakfast from 7-10 a.m. at the fire station, with the Firecracker 5K walk starting at 8 a.m., the 1-mile fun run at 8:15 a.m., and the 5K run at 8:30 a.m., all at Akron Elementary School.
The parade starts at 11 a.m., running down Rochester Street and Mishawaka Street.
New to afternoon activities this
year is laser tag, with that available from noon to 10 p.m. at Pike Memorial Park. Tuesday will cap off with fireworks at 10 p.m. at the park, sponsored by the fire department.
“After much consideration and conversations, the (Akron 4th of July Committee) decided that the whole town — its residents and businesses — should and will be recognized and honored in this parade as the grand marshals as they have persevered through the last 16 months of the pandemic.
Our community is so grateful to be able to gather again with the theme throughout the whole day, ‘Together, We Rise,’” the Akron 4th of July Committee explained in a statement.
The festivities end with the fireworks sponsored by the Henry Township Fire Department at 10 p.m. at Pike Memorial Park.

How to support a partner during pregnancy, delivery
The following are tips to support a partner during pregnancy, delivery and postpartum.
Pregnancy
Supporting a partner begins with pregnancy. Communicating with your partner about her needs allows you to better understand
what you can do to be there for her.
Just some ideas are to be there to help with errands or tasks, attend doctors’ appointments, attend prenatal and baby education classes. Talk together about what you both would like to experience during the labor and delivery experience.
Labor and Delivery
Once the time has come to go into labor and delivery, supporting
your partner can have many different roles. Many times, the support person does not know what to do when labor starts. Listening to your partner’s needs, as this may change through labor. Some ideas to help are offering water and ice chips, be supportive for position changes and movement, and providing massage. Lower back massage is often helpful. Support your
partner’s wishes and needs that you have previously talked about. Know what your comfort level with visitors is and help to reinforce this if needed. Offer positive words and affirmations to your partner.
Postpartum
We moved to a lease program. The machines in the photo were all in operating condition when taken out of service in April of this year. The leasing company offered no trade-in and we have no use for these machines today.
Machines may be inspected between 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday. There is no guarantee or warranty offered or implied.

Once the baby is here, help share infant care. This helps to increase bonding for everyone and allows mom time to rest and recover. Be supportive of either method of feeding. Breastfeeding can be a bit of a struggle in the beginning and gets easier with time and practice. Be aware of your partner’s emotions. Many women experience baby blues, anxiety, crying, and restlessness. This usually resolves in two weeks. Postpartum depression affects one in five moms. If by two weeks the baby blues do not get better or worsen at any time, contact the doctor. She may be too tired to see these changes in herself. Be supportive and help your partner seek the follow-up care she needs, whether those are postpartum ap-
pointments, baby appointments, or lactation support. Being involved and supportive helps bring you closer together and no one feels alone or left out and allows you to experience this wonderful time together.
Editor’s Note: Megan Cook works as an OB nurse and lactation consultant at Woodlawn Health.

Woodlawn Hospital nominated for America’s most beautiful hospital
The Woodlawn Hospital in Rochester has been nominated for America’s Most Beautiful Hospital contest. This contest is sponsored by the national health care staffing firm, Soliant Health.
Voting for the contest opened Thursday, June 22, and will run till Thursday, July 27. You can vote for Woodlawn on soliant.com/mostbeautiful-hospital-contest/.
There are 50 hospitals in the running to be one out of 20 of America’s most beautiful hospitals. The contest recognizes these hospitals’ commitment to developing and improving their campuses, facilities and staff.
“Hospital beauty is more than just its physical design and appearance; it is the health care staff who create the heart and soul of the hospital through genuine connections with patients,” said Soliant CEO David Alexander. “This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase hospitals for their nurturing staff, comforting aesthetics and innovative designs, which contribute to the overall well-being of patients.”
Soliant began this program in 2009 and has recognized more than
150 outstanding hospitals. Woodlawn was selected for its beautiful wooded grounds and excellent patient service.
The annual contest is held to discover hospitals in the United States that prove beauty is more than skin deep; it starts from within and radiates through by making patients feel more comfortable, healing them faster and treating them like family. Whether it’s soothing art and design, a healing garden to make a hospital feel more like home, or the support of the top-notch staff who know that love and laughter may be the best medicine, Soliant seeks out nominations and votes from community members and staff for those hospitals they feel best represent this beauty.
Soliant Health will donate $5,000 to the winning hospital’s foundation.

Partnership seeks input for historic walking tour
Chad Hisey, the Chairman of the Rochester Downtown Partnership Design Committee, is working to put together a walking tour of historic downtown Rochester. The walking tour will be accessible through the committee’s website and by QR code in the form of a podcast.
Before creating the tour, the committee wants to talk to a number of people who have fond memories of downtown Rochester. A panel is being set up to discuss history and stories at an event that will take place later this year at Times Theater. RTC will be filming the project, so the final creation will have both audio and video clips.
The committee is looking for people born between the years of 1920 and 1950 who have good memories of downtown Rochester. For more information, please contact Chad Hisey at (574) 201-8857.

— Dilly’s Restaurant & Bar
Dilly’s Restaurant & Bar thrives under new ownership
August will mark the oneyear anniversary of Rob and Chelsea McFarland’s purchase of Dilly’s Restaurant & Bar, 117 W. Rochester St., Akron, from former owner and family friend, Levi Dielman.
The purchase was just one in a year of positive, life-changing experiences for the McFarlands, including their marriage and the birth of their son, Tanner.
In fact, the couple’s first date was at Dilly’s, where they reconnected after having grown up together in Hastings, Mich.
So Dilly’s is more than just a business; it is, along with the town of Akron, a place of new beginnings for the McFarland family. It is also a family business in the truest sense, with Rob’s mother, Sue McFarland, playing a central role as financial partner and bookkeeper.
In spite of these changes, Rob has chosen not to fix a business that is not broken. Dilly’s continues in the spirit of the American steak house-style restaurant envisioned by Dielman when he remodeled the former feed store and garage back in 2016.
“We’re known for our flamegrilled steaks,” said Rob, who guarantees customers two things: First, “Everything you get looks like it does in the picture.” Secondly, they won’t leave Dilly’s hungry. “Everything is huge,” he remarked. “You’re more likely to leave food on your plate because you’re full.”
Dilly’s rib-eye steaks and medallions are made with premium locally-raised beef, cut to order and always fresh. And the burgers are all 100% Indianagrown Angus beef.
And that’s just the beginning. With a wide variety of entrees and appetizers, as well as a sizeable children’s menu, there is truly something for everybody.
On the bar side, Dilly’s also boasts one of the largest selections of beer and spirits in the area.
Along with the large portions and large drink selection, Dilly’s also has plenty of space, making it ideal for big groups.
“It’s really good for family dining,” Rob noted.
One change the McFarlands
have brought to Dilly’s is expanded hours; the restaurant is now also open for lunch, with daily lunch specials as well.
Rob knows Dilly’s from the ground up. Literally. He first visited the establishment to help his new acquaintance Levi clean out the basement.
“To this day he’s my best friend,” said Rob of his former boss.
At the time, Rob was brand new to the area, and was working at Rochester Metal and Iron. Soon, however, he was working at Dilly’s part time.
“I’ve worked in kitchens my whole life,” said Rob, thinking back to his formative years in Michigan.
In fact, a standing joke around the restaurant was: “Wouldn’t it be funny if Chelsea and Rob bought Dilly’s?” But, at the time, Rob’s aspirations
did not rise much higher than thinking he might be a manager one day.
Now, he sees himself growing old with Dilly’s and the Akron community he has grown to love.
“It’s so nice and relaxed here.
We love it. … I could do this at 80 years old.”
