Shine Your (Girl) Power

glo

Last Thursday was a stiletto kind of day. When I married Joe, that is Yes friends, after many years, cheers and tears together, we made the ultimate, sacred vow that forever says, “I do ” A realistic triple-combo of weathering storms, embracing still moments and par tying with the best of ‘em, Joe and I are battletested, scarred and deeply grateful all in one

Life can be tough And it can be beautiful. And the two can (and should) coexist like, well, a loving, steadfast husband and wife.

From celebrating Gal Grads (yes, submit a pic of your gal grad to be included just email to Sue!) to helping gals find the best gift for hubbies and honeys on Father ’s Day, the June issue will be full of inspiration, celebration and yes, positivit y and girl power!

Are YOU a female business owner? Or, do you know of one? Reach out to Melinda to help us promote savv y business gals Learn bare beaut y tips, soak up the sunshine and learn common keys to success. Count on this (and so much more!), coming soon in glo’s June issue

It rained on our wedding day Friends said that meant luck I say it was reality reminding us that love can endure amidst the storms It can And it does So while it was a stiletto kind of day? Galoshes would’ve worked too.

It’s the irony of consistent contradiction that is this thing called life. And this irony can ser ve as an invigorating reminder that we are alive, that reality prevails and that it’s our attitudes that color life We must consciously choose a world of positivity and love With deliberate focus, we can all grasp the power of positivity ; its strength is beyond comprehension I’ll choose it, how about you?

And, friends, it ’s through this view of positivity of gratefulness for yesterday and believing in goodness to come that I must now announce my depar ture.

I will soon move away from the Midwest, and while I will remain in publishing, I am saying goodbye to a nearly 20-year career in print magazines, ser ving this amazing region. Why the change? Because life is unpredictable and sometimes we must embrace life’s surprises.

So while my hear t is heavy to say goodbye as I have so loved glo, all for which it stands and all who graciously read this creation my spirits are also lifted Why? We can still be connected in my next publishing phase, if you wish to be

glo is and will remain in great hands, so please, as one reader said, “Keep on glo-ing ” And for those who also wish to follow my journey, I invite you to join me on June 1 for the launch of www.InSuesShoes.com

What ’s InSuesShoes com about? It ’s not about me, nor is it about shoes (sorr y about that one) Instead, it ’s about life and the many shoes we all wear as we traipse, trip and skip through life’s journey Laugh with me Embrace life’s goodness and together, whether in fuzz y slippers, hiking books, bejeweled stilettos or laced up running shoes, let ’s step together in this gift called life

I’ll see you once more in glo’s June issue and until then, enjoy the piece within your hands From celebrating Mother ’s Day to learning the habits of ‘Dreamers and Doers’ to best tips for brides, this issue is full of grea n Enjoy

Nail Glamour Spring Nail Trends

If you’re ready for a fresh look this spring, take a cue from this season’s fun and happy nail trends. There’s something for ever yone this year soft and bright hues, multiple shapes, plus 3-D stickers and gems for special flair

A New (French) Twist

The French manicure is a classic for a reason it ’s a subtle look that works for daytime and nighttime. This season offers a new take on the old favorite. “French manicures are always in style but people should tr y spicing it up a little by going outside the box for color choices or tr y a reverse French A reverse French is a solid color on the nail with a striped or rounded shape of another color on the half moon (toward the cuticle), ” said Kleinhans

Ar tistic Thinking

Shape ‘em Up

From square to stiletto, nail shapes change with the times and even with the season. This spring is no exception. “ The shape of the nail is getting softer edges, ” said Britney Kleinhans, cosmetologist at Southwest Hair & Day Spa “So if clients are used to getting a square shape maybe it's time to tr y rounding the corners of it a little for a more ‘squoval’ or rounded shape ”

Embrace the Brights and Lights

To stay on trend, choose colors on both ends of the spectrum. “ The main trends we are seeing in nail colors for spring are soft pastels and primar y colors, ” said Kleinhans. Pastels include the usual soft pink and lavender shades but also ex tend to buttercup yellow and even a soft sage green

On the bright side, go for bold primaries of red, blue and yellow with a shiny lacquered finish Combine two or three of these with a bold pattern to really embrace the trend

If you really want to mix it up, Kleinhans has a hot tip for you “Anyone look ing for nails that really stand out in a crowd should tr y abstrac t nails. Abstrac t nail ar t allows your nail tech to really show her creativity and you can go as wild or subtle as you want.” Designs include stripes, squiggles, squares or other shapes all on the same nail or across all five in the style of a modern ar t painting Thick, black lines, complemented by this season’s popular primar y colors will take your nails into bold territor y

Just Add Moisture

Don’t forget to take care of your nails “My biggest tip for keeping nails healthy is to keep them moisturized, ” said Kleinhans “Using cuticle oil at least once a day can help keep nails and cuticles moisturized and will help ex tend the life of your manicure My favorite is CND Solar Oil ” While you’re at it, go for health over length, ensuring nails have a strong foundation. Trim and clean regularly, though not by scrubbing, and you’ll maintain a healthy look a

Kassy Klinefelter

A.K.A. Unraveled K AOS

Captain, For t Wayne Derby Girls

Kassy Klinefelter is a wife, a mother and leader of the For t Wayne Derby Girls. Many in the Derby World refer to her as “Unraveled KAOS.” Take a peek to learn how her charac ter has passionately benefited her teammates, her communit y and her own personal growth

I’ve heard For t Wayne Derby girls are tough on the outside but golden-hear ted on the inside.

“I absolutely agree 100 percent Derby is all about building people up in so many more ways than just the physical spor t… I am involved with my local Lions Club and PTO at my k id’s school. I also enjoy cook ing and ser ving free community meals at church. The impor tance of community this spor t has is inspiring…”

Roller Derby is an intense spor t. How do you maintain a strong mind and help encourage your fellow derby girls?

“ The mental game in derby is just as impor tant as the physical game… I tr y to read or watch small inspirational things daily and I enjoy sharing them with my team… and make a point to encourage and tell newer sk aters when I notice they ’re mastering new sk ills. I t ’s fun to be a par t of their journey and growth in the spor t and celebrate small vic tories with each of them.”

You were voted team captain of the BOMB squad. What does this mean to you and how do you continue to show your leadership?

“Being a team captain means the world to me! I t holds a big weight on my shoulders and in my hear t… I feel that all the good leaders I’ve ever looked up to inspired me by simply leading by example. So I tr y to do the same… There have been several times when my body is exhausted and telling me ‘don’t do it, ’ but my hear t and head tells the coaches ‘use me anywhere you feel the team needs me ’ I want to absorb and learn as much as I can from people who have been sk ating for longer than I have Then in turn pass it on down the line to incoming sk aters ”

What message or encouragement would you want to give to the young ladies in the For t Wayne community?

“Don’t ever be afraid to SPREAD YOUR WINGS, JUMP and FLY. Follow your passions and whatever makes your hear t happy. Be willing to tr y new things and step out of your comfor t zone as you never k now what might spark a new interest Strap on your helmet, make the best of ever y day, and enjoy this wild ride called life ” a

McKenzie Cook

Age: 19

McKenzie Cook says there is no right way to pen a song, provided you first find your voice Although the For t Wayne native has been singing ever since she was able to talk and can play piano by ear, she only became serious about writing her own music when she was vocally sidelined for several months

“ Throughout high school, I would write down ideas here and there, but it never turned into anything I didn’t become passionate about songwriting until last summer when I had surger y for polyps on my vocal chords. Not being able to sing for many months made me realize how much I needed to get out of my comfor t zone, ” she said.

Cook says that anything can inspire: a personal experience, a person she has met, or a place she has visited. Once the idea is in her head, she sits at a piano and plays with a chord progression, singing whatever lyrics strike her in the moment. After ward, she will listen to the result, keep what she likes and discard what she doesn’t until she massages the measures into something she’s happy with

“(Most) of the songs I write end up being slower, more emotional songs because that is what feels most authentic and moving to me, ” she said.

For this For t Wayne native and aspiring singer/songwriter, it doesn’t hur t that Cook, a music business major at Belmont University, currently lives in the Music Capital of the World: Nashville. Between per forming oppor tunities, concer ts, connec tions and resources, she finds herself constantly immersed in the music industr y with lots of oppor tunity for hands-on experience She says from attending writers’ rounds, Grammy U and CMAedu events and meeting people she’s always looked up to in music, she is constantly honing her craft

Although she is still relatively new to songwriting and wants to hold off publishing her music until she finds her place in the industr y, she hopes to have something recorded and in the vault by the end of the year

“I have seen a huge shift in my motivation to consistently write and prac tice. I was always afraid to write songs in the past because I wasn’t sure if I was doing it right. But my involvement in the industr y has made me realize there is no right way to write a song You only have to find your voice and share your passion, ” she said “I want to write with the purpose of bringing people joy and hope, and make sure I am ser ving others through my music ” a

Dreamers VS. Doers

Dreamers VS. Doers

Tips for turning our dreams into realit y

Ever yone has dreams and desires, but not ever yone crosses the imaginar y line that moves dreams into reality Dreams and goals are the par t of life that make us come alive, motivate us to do more than usual and set us apar t from living an ordinar y, unfulfilled life to living the life of our dreams.

Successful people all have an individual, unique stor y, but each stor y shares something in common: each success stor y began with a dream. Bestselling international author, mentor and speaker Alena Chapman is one such success stor y. "One morning I awoke with a yearning to begin journaling I dropped the k ids off at school, went to the coffee shop and began to write Three months later I had a book Five months later I had an international bestselling book entitled, "The Prison Effec t, discover how you are block ing your own happiness and break free to abundance and joy in life "

Are you ready to turn those unfulfilled dreams into a fulfilling, produc tive life? Here are some tips to help you create your ver y own success stor y

• Write out a dream/yearning list and ask yourself what item(s) on that list are most impor tant Once you write a dream down, relax and let your mind go to work to achieve it

• Begin tak ing the first steps to make your dreams a reality Chapman recommends tak ing first steps without worr ying about how to achieve the dream "Don't worr y about the ‘how ’ In fac t, surrender the ‘how ’ to something bigger than yourself God/the Universe/Source whatever your belief."

• Set up a plan of ac tion where you commit to a specific amount of time each week work ing on achieving your dream

• Write your dreams at the top of your calendar and read them ever y day to begin mak ing them a reality

• Write a purpose statement for this time in your life Frame it and read it daily For example, my purpose is to touch others through my writing/teaching/music, etc

• Surround yourself with like-minded people

• Par tner with a friend who holds you accountable.

• Begin doing Doing is tak ing the steps as they unfold "When I decided to star t writing, I star ted writing I didn’t just sit on my sofa and dream about it, ” Chapman said "Once you begin doing, you are no longer just a dreamer or just a doer you are a true manifestor of your dream."

If you’ve been dreaming about something but your attempts haven’t led to positive results, maybe it is time to stop and begin a fresh approach to living the life you imagine Henr y David Thoreau once said, "Go confidently in the direc tion of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined."

If you are having trouble imagining your dream, Chapman recommends this exercise “ Wake up ever y morning and ask yourself, What do I want to do today? At first it will be small, fun things such as calling friends or getting your favorite cup of coffee. But once all that is exhausted, you will wake one morning with a yearning to star t something in your hear t, something that will give your soul purpose " a

Lookin’ good Massage may be one type of pick-me-up, but professional makeup application is another experience altogether Lillian Wollman, owner of Permanent Makeup by Lillian, looks at each face as a canvas, rife with oppor tunity for enhancement

Permanent makeup has its merits, because you often can’t tell the difference between it and a natural application She said many women suffer from thinning brows or not enough natural arch. And permanent eyeliner is great on a bride’s wedding day because it doesn’t smudge or wash away with those inevitable tears of joy. I t all comes down to look ing and feeling one’s best.

“ This is the time when brides want to look the best in their lives, ” she said, adding that wedding por traits are a cherished keepsake

The time-saving aspec t of permanent makeup is another perk Brides are often rushed on their wedding day and check ing one thing off that list eases some of that stress Speak ing of time, Wollman advises that brides have the permanent makeup application done at least a month in advance, to allow ample time for healing

Like Wollman, the staff at Belle Sante Med Spa helps brides feel beautiful in their own sk in literally. Operations manager Lynn Blanchard (and yes, par t-time glo Girl!) suggests Coolsculpting®, a nonsurgical, patented technology that eliminates fat in trouble spots She said it ’s a great treatment to help target stubborn fat on our waists and arms She recommends brides star t at least three months out from their nuptials, for optimal results

Brides wanting flawless sk in might consider getting a HydraFacial, which promises to detoxify, rejuvenate and protec t the sk in She also recommends spray tan, their line of medical-grade sk incare produc ts, laser hair removal and permanent makeup for that cameraready look Blanchard and her team can put together a custom pack of ser vices to take the guesswork out of selec ting ser vices

Romantic backdrops: Just add the bride and groom

A bride’s preparation doesn’t end with a health and beauty regimen, of course. That fair ytale wedding you’ve always wanted can come to life with the help of local exper ts. Christine Leto, co-owner of The Charles in For t Wayne, is plugged into wedding trends. Summer 2018 is a depar ture from year ’s past.

“In regards to decor, we are look ing at vibrant jewel-tone floral arrangements and an abundance of greener y, ” she said. “ We are also seeing more of a mix ture of table styles: Gone are the standard allround table arrangements only. Instead, there are now combinations of both banquet and rounds, ‘King's tables’.... and more than one Farmhouse-style, evok ing the old European, outdoor feel.”

And when it doubt, summer 2018 is all about romance “Most of our couples are choosing large groupings of candlelight for their tables and strung cafe lights for that soft romantic ambiance, ” said Leto “O f course, for those willing to splurge a little, the table linens ordered are varied tex tures, some with 'bling' and others with appliques ”

So, ditch the Ball® jars and distressed wood In her words, “brides are turning away from the standard rustic style and going for more of an outdoor elegant or Bohemian feel ”

Massage Marvels Health Benefits

Most of us think of a massage as a form of relaxation and rejuvenation and it ’s true There is nothing quite so heavenly as the scent of lavender lotion and soft melody of a rainforest. Treating yourself with a massage is the per fec t way to attain precious ‘me-time, ’ to de-stress and let the world’s worries fade away

of Massage

There’s nothing wrong with splurging on an hour of relaxation ever y now and then, but there are a number of other reasons to call your local spa to schedule yourself a massage more frequently. I t ’s healthy to do so. In fac t, there are medical claims stating that frequent massages may ac tually improve our overall physical and mental health

For tunately, massage for medical purposes is not a fad, nor do exper ts foresee it fading away any time soon. According the American Massage Therapy Association, more than 40 percent of people who received massages do so for a health benefit, rather than for mere relaxation. So, how exac tly can a massage help improve our overall wellness?

Alleviates Chronic Pain

By loosening muscles and improving range of motion, massages can help pain from common injuries in the lower back, as well as post-operative pain Typically, Swedish massages, Thai massages and deep tissue massages are used to help with this type of pain

Relieves Joint and Muscle Pain

For women who experience joint stiffness and muscle tension from conditions like osteoar thritis, carpel tunnel and fibromyalgia, massages increase blood flow and loosen joints, stimulating the body to move more freely Swedish, hot stone, shiatsu and deep tissue massage work well to loosen the body

Lessens Stress and Anxiety

On top of those benefits, frequent massages are also k nown to improve mental health by relieving stress and anxiety, lessening symptoms of depression, improving sleep, aiding with the effec ts of dementia and ser ving as a pain management and anxiety release for cancer patients.

And just like exercise, a massage will prompt your body to release endorphins, naturally decreasing pain and relieving your mind and body of unnecessar y stress and tension Massage therapists recommend aromatherapy massage, shiatsu massage or reflexology to help decrease stress.

Boosts Immune System

Receiving frequent massages may benefit your immune system, improving circulation and break ing down toxins, which is why you may have heard to drink plenty of water after a massage

We’re not claiming frequent massages are the answer to transform your mind and body, but if that ’s what you want to tell your bank account, we won’t blow your cover The most impor tant thing is to take care of your health and wellness, and if the way you choose to do so is through regular massage, you might just have to get used to the lavender lotion and spa music.

For Moms-To-Be:

Pregnanc y massage is offered for women to decrease stress and help with common pain that occurs, but make sure your massage therapist is cer tified in prenatal massage There is also infant massage (yes, it ’s a thing), and it is recommended to help little ones gain weight and strengthen muscles. a

Interest (and other stuff) Made Simple

Interest, simply put, is the cost of borrowing money When you borrow money, you pay a fee for the loan of it to spend it now rather than wait until later when you’ve saved the full same amount

Simple interest is calculated on the original amount of the loan, or the principal There are places all over town that make a business of loaning money for payday loans These places charge much higher interest fees than a bank or credit union, because they are shor t-term loans and require getting paid back quick ly, sometimes in only a week or a month. Not only that, but because they undergo little regulation, the fees can be precipitous

Compound interest is calculated on the principal and also on the accumulated interest of the previous period Another way of stating it is that it is “interest on interest ” This comes in handy with savings and deposits, par ticularly retirement savings; they ’ll accumulate faster

These concepts – simple and compound interest – are basic financial tools and if you become familiar with them you’ll make better decisions when tak ing out a loan or mak ing investments.

Aly Hess, marketing content manager of Three Rivers Credit Union, weighed in with some helpful information.

“Simply put, interest is all about time, ” said Hess “ When it comes to tak ing out a loan, the shor ter the term you choose, the less you’ll pay in interest in the long run; when it comes to investing, the longer the term the better, because you’ll gain more in interest.”

Hess cited an auto loan as an example

“If you were to take out an auto loan for $10,000 at 4 percent interest for a 60-month term, you’d pay about $257 per month and a total of $1,470 in interest over the life of the loan If you shor tened the term to 48 months, you’d end up paying about $316 per month, but only $1,173 in interest. The shor ter term saves you a few hundred dollars in interest.

“Conversely, if you were to be investing that money and opted for the longer (60-month) term, you’d receive a few ex tra hundred dollars in interest than if you invested over a shor ter term ”

Turning now to payday loans and why, as attractive as they are in commercials, they should be avoided:

“ While payday loans may seem like a convenient way to get cash fast, they have the potential to cause far more harm than good, ” said Hess. “Because they ’re able to be accessed so quick ly, fast-track ing the standard process it takes to obtain a loan elsewhere, people often don’t have an oppor tunity to thoroughly consider whether going this route is their best and only option

“Most notably, payday loans typically have an outrageous interest rate attached averaging a 400 percent APR since the terms are so shor t This can quick ly and easily result in the borrower falling into a much deeper debt than they anticipated, and even be the catalyst that throws them into the c ycle of living paycheck-to-paycheck or payday loan-to-payday loan as they attempt to pay it off ” a

b Here in the U.S., we like to spoil our moms. We spend more than 14 billion dollars on her favorite treats each year.

b When was the first Mother ’s Day?

b Mother ’s Day is t ypically the day people buy their spring flowers. It marks the end of freezing season and the star t of summer

May Flo wer s

❁ We love our tulips, but not as much as they do in the Netherlands. In the 17th centur y, tulips were wor th more bucks than gold.

❁ Ever wonder where those store-bought flowers come from? Six t y percent are straight from California

❁ The old saying, “April showers bring May flowers” is true, but can remind us that sometimes before the good, we have to go through the bad.

❁ Did you know tulip bulbs are completely edible? Now, that doesn’t mean they taste good

❁ Speaking of taste, there are a handful of flowers that smell just like chocolate the Chocolate Daisy, the Black S alsify, the Carolina Allspice and more. You’re welcome.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

Your willingness to tr y new things is what makes your garden the envy of the neighborhood This month, why not tr y a sweet bouquet of blooms that delight the nose as well as the eye Surround yourself with flowers that match your personality such as lilies and roses

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

Because both sides of your personality must be expressed, why not create a new arrangement that matches your creative nature and big imagination? Go big and go bold with bright colors and exotic species that will ser ve as inspiration for new ideas.

Cancer ( June 21 - July 22)

Funny, sweet and good-natured Cancers have a pure spirit, which must be why they appreciate the simple beauty found within a garden of white They k now there is a wide spec trum of hues to be found within a seemingly pristine plot but don’t forget to mix in a few surprises to appear to their often cheek y personalities

Leo ( July 23 - August 22)

Your big hear t and personality require equally bright and cheer ful blooms so why not fill your garden with bright and cheer ful sunflowers that are not only as dramatic and friendly as you are but will revel in the long, hot days ahead. Gerbera daisies are also a festive touch to the landscape. Tr y both.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

Good things come in small pack ages and for those who tend to be per fec tionists with an eye for detail, tiny yet tidy flowers such as buttercups, narcissus and chr ysanthemums are a per fec t choice Mums look especially nice in the fall and offer a wide range of colors and rich greener y

Libra (September 23 - Oc tober 22)

Libras believe in balance so your garden should contain a good mix of large and small flowers in a variety of shapes Hydrangeas, daisies, bluebells and roses will suit your personality Incorporate blue to offer a sense of serenity and additional peacefulness.

Scorpio (Oc tober 23 - November 21)

An intense personality such as yours requires a floral scheme that is up to the challenge Dark red geraniums and other mysterious blooms will appeal to your academic nature and intuitive mind, but because you prefer to avoid undue pressure it is impor tant to keep your style simple and sincere

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

Fun-loving, uncomplicated Sagittarians prefer wondrous variety, not only in their garden but also in life. Carnations are a par ticular favorite because they look great, have plenty of detail but are not as fussy as other flowers

Capricorn (December 22 - Januar y 19)

Capricorns are like a fine wine that get better with age so it ’s no surprise that they are attrac ted to heirloom varieties and other perennial favorites The cooler weather of the early month makes pansies a great option for porch boxes, centerpieces or a splash of color to your flowerbed

Aquarius ( Januar y 20 - Februar y 18)

Because you let your emotions flow from the hear t like a river, it only makes sense that the flower you choose bloom in a similar manner. Orchids are a per fec t choice because they not only possess charac teristics that complement your personality, but come in a number of colors.

Pisces (Februar y 19 - March 20)

With your devil-may-care personality and offbeat sense of humor, it only stands to reason that your garden should be full of flowers that nod to your sense of fun and whimsy Poppies, wildflowers, lilacs and even rhubarb will cause heads to turn and tongues to wag Remember, there is a fine line between genius and insanity

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

Ever y rose has its thorn, which makes it the per fec t bloom for the beautiful but often ill-tempered Aries who values tradition, organization and hates when plans go awr y. You have the focus and stamina to make your garden the showplace of the neighborhood provided you balance the prick ly with the sweet. a
