2024 marks the 110th Anniversary of Mother’s Day in America and yet it is surprising that most Americans are completely unaware of the colourful, fascinating, and truly unbelievable facts surrounding our most cherished day on the calendar: Mother’s Day!

Every language has different words for the most common of things, such as food, water, life, death, etc.

So why is this one word – mama –spoken in (nearly) every conceivable language on this third planet from the Sun?

(even remotely possible) that they all, virtually, use the same word in the same context -- “Mama”?

Etymologists (scientists who study the origin of words) were astonished by this phenomenon in light of the fact that there are an estimated 7,000 different languages and dialects around the entire planet of nearly 8 billion inhabitants.

This fact still remains mindboggling today in 2024 on the 110th Anniversary of Mother’s Day: How is it possible that virtually every human being who has ever lived used the

word “Mama” for the exact same reason/definition?

Let’s find out.

THE ANSWER AS TO WHY ‘MAMA’ IS UNIVERSAL IS FINALLY REVEALED.

Famous Russian linguist, Roman Osipovich Jakobson (1896-1982), one of the most celebrated and influential linguists of the twentieth century who revolutionised new techniques in analysing linguistic sound systems studied this global phenomenon: Mama.

The pioneering scientist found that there is an anatomical reason as to why “Mama” is so similar across different languages around the Earth.

WHAT ARE THE FIRST SOUNDS BABIES MAKE?

The first oral sounds human babies make -- and like to say -- are in the “babble” stage.

They first babble without meaning, other than the sounds are easy to say and easy to “babble.”

Developmentally, babies babble nonsense sounds to try them out. The simplest form of babble is a consonant followed by a vowel: consonants followed by a wide vowel sound (ah) are the most dominant. The opening and closing of the mouth is the most natural order of production.

Inevitably, some sounds are easier to say than others, which sets them apart as a baby babbles and explores language, writes Roman Jakobson in his groundbreaking 1962 article (“Why ‘Mama’ and ‘Papa’?”)

Simply put, the easiest sound for a baby to produce is “ah,” which requires no movement of the tongue or lips.

An old prospector shuffled into the town of El Indio, Texas leading a tired old mule.

The old man headed straight for the only saloon in town, to clear his parched throat.

He walked up to the saloon and tied his old mule to the hitch rail.

As he stood there, brushing some of the dust from his face and clothes, a young gunslinger stepped out of the saloon with a gun in one hand and a bottle of whisky in the other.

The young gunslinger looked at the old man and laughed, saying, “Hey old man, can you dance?”

The old man looked up at the gunslinger and said, “No son, I don’t dance . . . never really wanted to.”

As the baby eats, a nursing baby discovers “mmm” with little effort.

Jakobson describes it this way:

“Often the sucking activities of a child are accompanied by a slight nasal murmur, the only phonation which can be produced even when the lips are pressed to the mother’s breast or to the feeding bottle and the mouth is full.”

Even if a baby is never breast-fed, this first sound comes to fruition via other means, such as the feeding bottle when sucking and the mouth is full, to offer just one example.

It can be frustrating to hear a baby babbling something that sounds like “mama” but not feel confident that they actually (mean) mama.

Babies will start to babble around 6 months of age and this includes (repeating) the syllable “ma” which sounds like mama. A 6-month-olde doesn’t yet (mean) “mama,” they are simply practising sounds, like the repetitive “ma” sound.

MAKE NO MISTAKE: EVENTUALLY THE BABY WILL NOT ONLY SAY “MAMA” BUT WILL MEAN “MAMA”

Make no mistake, in time, the baby will no longer just be babbling

A crowd had gathered as the gunslinger grinned and said, “Well, you old fool, you’re gonna dance now!” and started shooting at the old man’s feet.

The old prospector, not wanting to get a toe blown off, started hopping around like a flea on a hot skillet.

Everybody standing around was laughing.

When his last bullet had been fired, the young gunslinger, still laughing, holstered his gun and turned around to go back into the saloon.

The old man turned to his pack mule, pulled out a double-barreled 12 gauge shotgun and cocked both hammers.

The loud clicks carried clearly through the desert air. The crowd stopped laughing immediately.

The young gunslinger heard the sounds too, and he turned around very slowly.

The silence was deafening. The crowd watched as the young gunman stared at the old timer and the large gaping holes of those twin 12 gauge barrels.

The barrels of the shotgun never wavered in the old man’s hands, as he quietly said;

the sound of “mama” -- but, will evolve to mean the word “mama.”

Studies clearly reveal that when a baby wants to eat, or just misses its mother, he/she can repeat this sound (“mama”) in anticipation of her, or to express a longing for its mama. Jacobson and other worldwide scientists now call this an “anticipatory signal.”

In essence, the baby is calling or signaling its mother when it is hungry, feeling ill, or merely yearning to be close to her. Often a crying baby is merely manifesting a primal need to be held in her arms after which crying often ceases (unless the infant is ill).

A more recent study discovered that brain activity increases when a newborn hears a repetitive sound like “mama” or “dada.” The 2012 study, carried out by the University of British Columbia, was published in the journal of “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.” This suggests babies are “hardwired” to recognise repetitive sounds more quickly than other sounds. That would explain why “ma” becomes “mama” and not “matagu” or another random combination of different syllables.

HOW TO SAY “MAMA” AROUND THE WORLD.

“Son, have you ever kissed a mule’s backside?”

The gunslinger swallowed hard and said, “No sir .. . . but . . . but I’ve always wanted to.”

There are a few lessons for all of us here:

* Don’t be arrogant.

* Don’t waste ammunition.

* Whisky makes you think you’re smarter than you are.

* Always make sure you know who is in control.

* And finally, don’t mess around with old folks; they didn’t get old by being stupid.

I just love a story with a happy ending, don’t you?

I know what Cinco de Mayo is, I just don’t know when it is.

Despite the extreme polarity between countries/languages, here are a just a few extraordinary examples of where “Mama” is said (similarly) around the world and in what language.

In Afrikaan, Arabic, Armenian, Bangladesh, traditional Chinese, Dutch, Hindi, Icelandic, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese, Laotian/ Lao, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Scottish-Gaelic, Samoan, Slovenian, Spanish, Swahili, Thailand/Tai, Yiddish, Welsh, Zulu – well, you name it -- they all (basically) have the same universal name and spelling for “Mama.”

NOW – HAVE FUN WITH YOUR OWN COMPUTER!

And if a language does not have the exact spelling match for “Mama” –it’s still pretty darn close to it, such as with French (maman), Filipino (si mama), Korean (eomma), Portuguese (mamae), Swahili (ma), and Vietnamese (ma), etc.

“MOTHER’S DAY” IS AN ANCIENT CUSTOM.

Shocking news for many is that the concept of Mother’s Day is as olde as the hills. And as incredible as it may sound, the world’s leading scholars of antiquity inform us that the roots of Mother’s Day actually trace back thousands of years to ancient cultures, such as the Middle East, Greece, and Rome.

MOTHER’S DAY AROUND THE WORLD TODAY.

Today, over 200 different countries celebrate Mother’s Day on different days and months of the year.

For example, most Arab countries celebrate it on 21 March.

Russia celebrates it on the last Sunday in November.

America celebrates it on the 2nd Sunday in May.

COUNTRIES THAT CELEBRATE MOTHER’S DAY ON THE SAME DAY AS WE DO IN AMERICA.

Several foreign countries celebrate Mother’s Day on the exact same day on the calendar as we do in America, such as: Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, Germany, Japan, Peru, and the Philippines to cite a few examples.

WHY DID MOTHER’S DAY ALMOST NEVER HAPPEN IN AMERICA?

A. Congress disagreed and could not decide on one particular day.

B. Women were considered unworthy second-class citizens. `C. U.S. law makers were worried they would also have to set aside a “Mothers-In-Law” day.

Believe it or not, the correct answer is “C” above.

A little known – but colourful fact -- is that in 1908 Congress first turned down the idea of Mother’s

Day being an official day of observance because they feared they would be compelled to also sign into law a “Mothers-In-Law” day as well – and that left a bad taste in their mouths.

Mother-In-Law jokes were a mainstay and carried a negative connotation not only in the New World but also in all parts of the world.

WHICH U.S. PRESIDENT MADE MOTHER’S DAY A NATIONAL HOLIDAY?

A. Woodrow Wilson

B. Franklin D. Roosevelt

C. John F. Kennedy

If you chose “A” for Woodrow Wilson, you are correct!

Six years after Congress turned down Mother’s Day, in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson did the right thing and signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day to be held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honour motherhood.

WHY DID THE FOUNDER OF MOTHER’S DAY IN AMERICA END UP HATING IT?

A. President Woodrow Wilson who signed it into law was a Democrat and the advocate for Mother’s Day was Republican.

B. She (the founder who advocated it into law) became divorced, bitter, and died alone.

C. Mother’s Day became overly commercialised.

If you selected “C” above, well, you’re one smart cookie (as my Mom would say).

In one of America’s most ironic turn of events, Anna Jarvis (18641948), American activist and advocate who successfully campaigned to have Mother’s Day voted into law, eventually became so horrified by the commercialisation of her holiday that she campaigned to have it cancelled!

In a 1944 article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Mother’s Day, Anna Jarvis stated:

“Mother’s Day is being desecrated. The telegraph companies with their ready-made greetings, the florists with their high-pressure campaigns with the awful prices, and the candy manufacturers and greeting card manufacturers have all made a racket out of my ideas.”

For the first time, San Diego’s leading animal welfare organizations have come together to raise awareness about the critical state of animal shelters in San Diego County. During a press conference on Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, eleven organizations implored the community to join them in saving lives by adopting, fostering and spaying and neutering their pets, before the situation becomes even more urgent during the busier summer months.

I’m always a bit nervous when I review a restaurant for the first time. Will the food be tasty? Is it fairly priced? What type of service am I likely to receive? Is it casual, formal, what type of decor and/or atmosphere does it offer?

2024 is projected to be a recordbreaking Mother’s Day with well over 130-million telephone calls – just in the United States alone –all signaling and carrying “Happy Mother’s Day” greetings.

On the 110th Anniversary of Mother’s Day, these orbiting satellite dish antennas will be overwhelmed and kept busy on various frequencies. This includes transmissions from international calls, ship to shore phone connections, telecommunications from daughters and sons stationed overseas, as well as an avalanche of computer emails, all generated for the sole purpose of expressing our undying love for Mom.

More telephone calls are made on Mother’s Day than on any other day of the year (including Christmas, New Year’s, Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day, and Father’s Day).

When your mother’s voice is loud enough, even the neighbours brush their teeth and get dressed quickly in a manner of animal instinct for survival.

Obeying is the least we can do for Moms.

After all, we were often responsible for nearly driving our mothers stark raving mad when we were going through our “terrible threes.”

Not to mention, the marathon challenges mothers had to endure, including extreme sleep deprivation.

Humour is essential in the life of mothers, as mental health experts emphasise: “You either laugh, grin and bear it, or they measure you for a straitjacket.”

Mothers are enslaved to labours and chores and therefore must learn how to be creative in their multitasking skills, even when such tactics are discovered by accident: As the late Phyliss Diller testified, “The only time I ever enjoyed ironing was the day I accidentally got gin in the steam iron.”

In later years, when you’re a mother, you will learn how to balance your life.

As journalist and author Katie Bingham Smith says: “Some days I do yoga and don’t yell at the kids. Some days I scream at them while eating cake over the sink. It’s called balance in life.”

Important Healthcare Legislation Moving

As many of you know I have served on the Assembly Health Committee for most of my term in the State Legislature, and I am now the Committee’s Vice Chair. The Committee’s jurisdiction includes healthcare, behavioral and mental health, medical insurance, Medi-Cal and other public healthcare programs, and long-term care licensing. The lives of millions of Californians are impacted by legislation that comes before this committee.

For example, several important health-related bills were passed by the Committee on April 23rd. These include AB 2563 (Essayli) which requires the California Department of Public Health to expand its statewide screening of newborns to include Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), one of the most severe forms of inherited muscular dystrophies. Early diagnosis enables tailored care which can greatly enhance the quality and life potential for DMD patients.

AB 2467 (Bauer-Kahan), requires healthcare service plans and insurers to expand coverage to include hormone therapy and other services for women going through menopause or pre-menopause. And AB 2914 (Bonta) requires California to establish a new Essential Health

Benefits (EHBs) benchmark plan by 2027. EHBs outline the minimum services required by health plans covering Californians.

We also passed AB 2115 (Haney) which authorizes nonprofit or free clinics to update treatment for acute narcotic withdrawal symptoms in compliance with federal regulations. The bill’s supporters include the County of San Diego.

AB 2786 (Bonta) will authorize mobile farmers’ markets to provide a variety of locally grown or produced healthy foods in conformance with the California Retail Food Code. Farmers’ markets can address food access issues by bringing fresh foods to underserved areas.

These bills all passed unanimously, and are a good example of how legislators from both sides of the aisle can come together on important issues that benefit all Californians.

Assemblymember Marie Waldron, R- Valley Center, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the cities of Poway, Santee, portions of the City of San Diego, and most of rural eastern and northern San Diego County.

Help! My GE appliances are all malfunctioning at once!

None of Jacquelyn Smith’s appliances work properly. Repeated visits by GE technicians have failed to fix the problems. What can she do?

Q: I ordered GE appliances during the pandemic, including a new range, refrigerator, and dishwasher. GE delivered them in February 2022.

The range and refrigerator have malfunctioned from day one. The refrigerator froze food no matter what setting. The range consistently burned and boiled food one notch above “low.”

I had three visits by GE technicians for the fridge in the first five months, and they replaced various parts. But now the compressor on the fridge isn’t working.

I’ve sent in 15 videos about the malfunctioning stovetop. I have had six visits by techs to address the nonexistent calibration.

I would appreciate a full refund or replacement with similar appliances that actually work as they should. Can you help?

A: It’s unusual for one appliance to break down on the first day. But two appliances? That’s got to be a first.

What went wrong? I think GE would like to blame this on the pandemic. You ordered these appliances during the lockdown. It took months to deliver them. It’s possible that there were production issues that caused your appliances to fail.

While GE has a standard one-year warranty for most of its appliances, it also has an implied warranty. It’s not something written in a contract, but it’s an implicit promise that your appliance will work as advertised. It looks like you followed all the steps to what should have been a successful resolution. You contacted GE through its customer service department. It sent a technician. That didn’t work, so it sent another technician. And the process repeated itself several times until it became clear that the only solution was replacing all of your appliances or refunding you.

are slow to get to that point. That’s because replacing an appliance is a big decision that drags down a company’s profits. For an appliance manufacturer, it is the last resort.

You shared compelling evidence with GE that its appliances didn’t work, including videos and photos. By the way, good work keeping such detailed records. Most customers would have just demanded a refund with no evidence to support their request. You had the goods.

A brief, polite email to one of the GE executives might have spurred the company into fixing this. I list the names, numbers and email addresses of the GE executives on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.

American Baseball owes a great deal of its existence to Albert Goodwill Spalding. You may have seen the name “Spalding” on a number of sports equipment, namely baseballs, players’ gloves and a number of other related sports items, including rule and history books. Spalding played. managed, and owned baseball teams and was the co-founder of today’s National League.

Spalding began as a teen-aged pitcher, then became manager, and executive in the early years of the game and, along with his brother, Walter, was a co-founder of the A.G. Spalding Sporting Goods Company. A native of Rockford, Ill., Spalding was born Sept. 2, 1849. He played professional major league baseball between 1871 and 1878. Spalding was the first to wear a baseball player’s glove he made to protect from catching the ball with bare hands. Along the way he improved the ball itself, which became the standard for all player use.

After Budget finds animal hairs in Bernard Sia’s rental car, it charges him a $125 cleaning fee. But Sia doesn’t have a pet -- and that’s not the only problem.

Q: Budget charged my credit card a fee of $125 after finding animal hair in a rental car that I returned. I do not have any pets, and the people I stayed with on my trip to Austin, Texas, do not have any pets.

The Man Who Played and Promoted Baseball

In 1871, Spalding joined the professional Boston Red Stockings (precursor club to today’s modern Atlanta Braves). As a pitcher he won 206 games and lost only 53. Spalding’s batting average was .323.

After his retirement as a player, Spalding remained active and part owner with the Chicago White Stockings (today known as the Chicago Cubs). With owner William Hulbert, Spalding organized the National League, the first professional organization with member teams using a standard rulebook.

In 1876, Hulbert enlisted the help of Spalding, convincing him to sign a contract to play for his White Stockings. Spalding coaxed a number of his teammates to secretly sign with the Chicago club. News of the signings by some Boston and Philadelphia players leaked to the press before the season ended and all of them faced verbal abuse and physical threats from the fans of those cities.

Spalding was known as the premier pitcher of the 1870s, leading the National League in victories for each of his six full seasons as a professional player. During each of those years he was his team’s only pitcher. In 1876, Spalding won 47 games as the prime pitcher for the White Stockings and led them to win the first-ever Na-

tional League pennant by a wide margin.

In 1877, Spalding began to use a glove to protect his catching hand. Some players had previously used gloves, but they were not popular, and Spalding himself was skeptical of wearing one at first. However, once he began donning gloves, he influenced other players to do so. He continued to improve the glove, which has developed into a key part of today’s game equipment.

I asked for a damage report. It is not clear how they determined that what they found was animal hair. Additionally, they made the claim based on less than 10 hairs. Don’t you think the fee seems excessive, considering what they found?

A: You’re right, something is not quite right with this Budget cleaning fee.

For starters, the damage report has several photos that show several tiny white strands in the vehicle. A Budget employee could have vacuumed them away during the cleaning. Are they animal hairs? I have no idea, but the point is, there weren’t that many.

But there’s another, even bigger problem. When I asked you to review the bill again to make sure they were charging the right renter,

you discovered a discrepancy that should have immediately made Budget zero out your cleaning fee. It appears the company had sent you a bill for a car other than the one you rented.

You can prevent unnecessary cleaning fees by taking before and after photos of your car and ensuring that you clean the vehicle before bringing it back to the location. But if a car rental company sends you a bill for the wrong car, what then? Well, this is a good reminder to keep your car rental records and, when you’re taking your pictures, to get a shot of the VIN -the vehicle identification number -- which you can normally find on the driver’s side of the vehicle on the dashboard near the windshield. This isn’t the first time a car rental company has apparently sent a bill to a customer for the wrong car.

ing fees for pets, it’s definitely a thing. Budget has a reputation for charging these fees, which can go as high as $450. So make sure that if you’re renting a car with anything that sheds -- a dog, cat or even a coat or blanket -- that you clean your rental thoroughly before returning it.

But as I’ve already said, this looks like a case of mistaken identity. So an appeal to one of the Budget executives I list on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org, might have convinced the company to drop its bill.

The Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) which is the FHA insured loan program, is the most popular loan program. In the 1960s and 70s mainframe computers began to turn up in the “corporate” workplace. They automated business routines, stored files and reduced the number of filing cabinets and amount of paper needed to run the business. In the 1980s and 90s PCs roared into our homes and small businesses. As in the corporate environment, home and small business computers did not so much change what we did as the way we did it. Computers automated and consolidated our home and business activities and made things faster, easier and more convenient. As engineers and programmers automated ever more business and personal activities, computer hardware developers struggled to keep up with increasing demands for more

The Internet or World Wide Web has the capability to store and connect all published human knowledge. AI (Artificial Intelligence) promises the ability to process this information with an intelligence that emulates human cognition. The combination of AI and high speed Internet (broadband) created the IW (Intelligent Web) that came to be 2001. The IW eventually grew to serve over 90% of Internet users. Nothing illustrates the power of the IW as a vehicle for advertising, news and communication more clearly than the decline of the daily newspaper industry. San Diego’s Union Tribune published 400,000 newspapers each day in 2001. While the population of SD County has grown by 14% since 2001, The SDUT’s current circulation is less than 200,000.

As the IW grew in size and con-

tent and technology advanced the cognitive power of AI, PCs were no longer needed as “stand alone computers”. Infinitely faster, more capable Internet servers could do all the “heavy lifting”. Today most PCs are essentially internet access devices (terminals) with a video display. PCs still need stand alone capabilities for storage, local processing and peripheral device control, but nearly any PC built since the release of Windows 7 in 2009 has enough speed and power to operate as a modern Internet terminal. The IW pushed computer technology to the back burner and PCs lost their 20 th century status as icons of modern technology. Today PCs are simply one of many useful gadgets for accessing the IW. Leading technology today no longer involves faster RAM, more storage and more capable CPUs for PCs. Today the technological emphasis is

on adapting ever more potent AI algorithms to the growing list of applications on the IW.

When we opened The Computer Factory in 1995, the major PC brands were Compaq, Packard Bell, IBM, Gateway, Dell and HP, each “Made in America”. Today only the Dell and HP PC brands are still viable but neither is manufactured in the USA.

Lenovo, Dell and HP brands that comprise 75% of worldwide PC sales are Chinese products. (Apples are too!) Declining sales and static technology caused American hightech companies to lose interest in PCs. But these relatively inexpensive low-tech IW terminals with a big screen, mouse, keyboard, speakers and convenient peripherals are still the best and most comfortable way available for us to stay connected - to the World.

Here are the main points.

• Shelters are in a state of emergency. We have been struggling with record numbers of dogs in care for months now, and we are moving towards an incredible crisis in San Diego this summer if our community doesn’t act now.

• The situation is already dire, and it will soon become worse. Summer is the busiest time of year for animal shelters in San Diego County, and there are already more dogs in care than we have space for.

• Having so many dogs lingering in shelters for weeks or months causes contagious diseases and devastating behavior challenges to skyrocket — which in turn leads to an increase in negative outcomes. Euthanasia rates are rising nationwide, and animals are suffering.

• Our county’s largest shelters have already had to pause the intake of owner-surrendered dogs due to the lack of space. We are

facing a crisis this summer, especially as we prepare for the highest intake of stray dogs over the July Fourth holiday.

• We are committed to Staying at Zero euthanasia of healthy or treatable shelter pets but need the community’s help to do so.

Most of these pets came from puppy mills, backyard breeders, and people who failed to spay or neuter their pets. NOT the shelters.

Who pays for the care and, if it becomes necessary, disposal of these unwanted pets? We do. The taxpayers.

According to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary:

If just 6% more of Americans would adopt instead of buying from breeders, the problem of pet overpopulation would be solved.

We can do this. But we need to work together and we need to start now.

THROUGH TOIL, TEARS & HARDSHIP OF MOTHERHOOD, HUMOUR OFTEN IS THEIR SAVING GRACE.

Many of the world’s greatest thinkers and philosophers have tried to capture the relentless hardships, sacrifices, and the quizzical upsidedown world of child-rearing.

One such eloquent attempt was as follows: “Children are like crazy, drunken small people in your house.”

As a young teen growing up, I remember seeing a plaque at my friend’s house years ago, where his mother had raised six hyperactive kids.

The plaque showed a true-life photo of his very tired-looking mother (who honestly looked ten years older than she really was) along with her touching inscription: “I love all my children equally. Except for the one that sleeps . . . I love that one more.”

THE MYSTERIOUS &UNCHARTED WORLD OF MOTHERHOOD.

Unless you’re a mother, you may have been guilty of that most unpardonable sin of asking what many door-to-door survey people ask: “Do you work, or do you just stay home and take care of the kids?”

Nothing is more insulting – as if raising kids were not a full-time, arduous job.

I was 6-years-olde when a pollster asked my Mom that very same question, in real life.

I’ll never forget the look on my Mom’s face that day. It was the same exact expression on her face as when she used to change diapers.

Luckily for the man, my Mom was a very peaceful and passive individual.

Being a mother is the hardest and most important job in the world. Think about it: Mothers are in charge of literally raising the future of the world.

Sometimes mothers need “time off,” in order to maintain their sanity. After all, their job is neverending, like 24/7 at the hospital trauma ward.

It’s not that moms don’t love us all the time – they do. But, they are only made of flesh and blood and, therefore, have limitations.

All moms occasionally require some “free time” away from the kids, just so that moms are not found standing out on a ledge somewhere.

I had two older brothers and one younger sister growing up, and once, when I was a tiny child, I clearly remember Dad asking Mom what she’d like on Mother’s Day.

My Mom just said with a very tired expression on her face and a very weak voice: “I just want you to drive 7 hours east with the kids in the car and then turn around and come back.”

EVOLVING INTO MOTHERHOOD.

You know that you’re evolving into motherhood when your bare feet sticks to the kitchen floor and you don’t care anymore.

Techniques of getting a sleepy child out of bed: You throw the cat on the bed. This always works because the dog is already on the bed.

All moms learn survival skills. For example, in time, they all develop ESP which will enable moms to ‘sense’ things. For example, they know that “Silence is Golden . . . unless you have kids, then it’s just suspicious.”

And all moms are the best teachers, simply because they teach by example. For instance, I once overhead my Mom’s secret conversation over the phone with another mom and I heard her say: “My kids wanted to know what it’s like to be a mom, so I woke them up at 2 a.m. to tell them my sock came off.”

MOM’S SCHOOL.

In Mom School there is one test called “The Mess Test.” All moms must pass this test to determine if they are ready for Motherhood.

The Mess Test is given to all moms from a certified mental institution. The test includes smearing peanut butter on the sofa and curtains. Then placing a fish stick behind the couch and leaving it there all summer.

Once becoming a mom, all mothers are now required to continue attending advanced Child-Rearing classes, which is taught by a former mental patient.

In these classes, mothers are taught basic things they will soon learn from their own children, such as:

1. You probably do not want to know what that odor is.

2. A magnifying glass can start a fire even on an overcast day.

3. VCRs do not eject peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

4. Marbles in the car’s gas tanks make lots of noise when driving.

5. The spin cycle on the washing machine makes the cat dizzy.

Aside from learning these basic truths, all mothers are required to

memorise certain things, which are taught by a former POW. For example, moms are taught not to crack under pressure and never, ever confess or say certain things to their children, such as:

1. “Yeah, I used to skip school a lot, too.”

2. “Here, let me smell that shirt again – oh yeah, it’s good for another week.”

3. “Oh, you’re wearing your Superman pajamas to bed? Sure, you can have the top bunk.”

4. “Yeah, sure. Just leave all the lights on . . . it makes the house look so much more cheery!”

5. Warning: your child will gladly share a cold, fever, cough – and your true age – to anyone!

KIM JONG-UN LEADER OF NORTH KOREA CELEBRATES MOTHER’S DAY.

One of my neighbours told me that he just saw on the TV news where North Korean leader, Kim Jongun had asked his mother what she wished for on Mother’s Day and she replied: “Thank you, Son, but all I want is a bit of caring and looking-after.” So, Kim Jong-un put her in a nursing home.

I don’t put a lot of stock in that story, to be honest, but hey, that’s my neighbour.

SUMMATION

A little girl was once asked where her home was. And she answered: “Where my mommy is.” No one has yet been able to improve on that eloquent truth which springs forth from pure innocence.

American mothers comprise wives, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, friends, and are found everywhere from the U.S. military, medical professions, hospitals, schools, colleges, law enforcement, clergy, workforce, homes, everyday friends, well – American mothers are everywhere in this great land of ours.

In 1905, after Henry Chadwick wrote an article saying baseball grew out of the British sports of cricket and rounders, Spalding called for a study commission to determine the real beginnings of baseball. On Dec. 30, 1907, Spalding received a letter that (erroneously) declared baseball to be the invention of Union Army Gen. Abner Doubleday. But Spalding stubbornly would not appoint anyone to the commission if they believed the sport was somewhat related to the two English games. Spalding noted, “Our good old American game of baseball must have an American Dad.” Spalding’s commission concluded that “… the best evidence available to date, was devised by Abner Doubleday at Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1839.”

In 1888-89, Spalding took a group of major league players around the world to promote baseball and his Spalding sporting goods company. At a celebratory dinner in New York City, he celebrated the tour for establishing “our national game throughout the world.” Humorist Mark Twain proclaimed the tour “carried the American name to the outermost parts of the earth, and covered it with glory every time.”

In 1900, Spalding moved to San Diego and built an estate in the Sunset Cliffs area of Point Loma. In 1907-09 Spalding was the driving force behind the development of a paved road, known as “Point Loma Boulevard,” running west from downtown San Diego to Point Loma and Ocean Beach. It later provided the basis for California’s State Route 209. Spalding joined with George Marston and other civic-minded businessmen to purchase the site of the original Presidio of San Diego, which they developed as a historic park and donated to the city of San Diego. Spalding helped organize San Diego’s 1915 Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park.

Spalding died of a stroke in San Diego on Sept. 9, 1915, one week after his 66th birthday. In 1969, the San Diego Padres baseball club became a member of Spalding’s National League, playing as a representative of Major League Baseball.

In 1939, Spalding was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee as one of the first inductees from the 19th century. His plaque, in part, reads “… Organizational genius of baseball’s pioneer days. … manager-pitcher of champion Chicago White Stockings in National League’s first year.”

The popularity of e-bikes is presenting a growing public safety concern with motorists in North San Diego County experiencing “near fatal accidents” with these untrained, unlicensed e-bike riders who often ride them on public streets! These ebikers are often mere children causing Vista Mayor John Franklin to express “I’m thankful to God that we haven’t had any young children who have been killed in our city.” I applaud Vista Mayor John Franklin and the Vista City Council for their e-bike training program which will be implemented to coincide with National Bike Month on May 17. Shame on other North SD regions for not doing the same. As Vista Councilmember Corinna Contreras stated, “I’m not aware of any other cities along the 78 corridor that are doing something like this.” Kudos to the City of Vista. And kudos to Lyle E. Davis’ The Paper and writer Friedrich Gomez for public-service stories such as “The Growing Road Rage Epidemic,” and “Why America Is In Decline” and “Growing Addiction of Pornography with Today’s Pastors.” As with most, I only read online publications such as The San Diego Union-Tribune, NY Times, and The Paper.

Oceanside Independence Parade June 29 • 10am

On Saturday, June 29, the 28th Annual Oceanside Independence Parade will honor local leaders and community members. This years’ parade theme is “Celebrating Our Heritage,” highlighting our com-

munity’s cultural roots. Sponsors of the parade include the City of Oceanside, County of San Diego Community Enhancement Grant, and Genentech. The parade will start at 10 a.m. at the intersection of North Coast Highway and Wisconsin Avenue and travel north on Coast Highway to Civic Center Drive. More than 100 parade entries are expected to march, roll, walk and drive down historic Highway 101.

Oceanside Independence Parade participant applications are now open! Participants can sign up to walk their party or drive their float down Coast Highway. We are accepting businesses, community organizations, nonprofits, car/motorcycle clubs, elected officials, and more.

Three Hometown Heroes will be recognized during this year’s Oceanside Independence Parade. There will also be a ceremony awarding the floats embracing our theme most.
