It was a freak accident, yet an unforgiving one. The year was 1916. What happened was avoidable. The two brothers had arrived early to school as they were expected to.
Glenn Cunningham Their chore was to start a warm fire before the arrival of their teacher and classmates. They would soak the firewood with kerosene as they always did, then light the pot-bellied stove. However, this day was different. Tragically different. Unknown to both brothers, the kerosene container was accidentally filled with combustible gasoline.

The concussion of the explosion was so fierce that it blew both boys to the ground, setting them on fire at the same time! Through the shock and unspeakable horror, older brother, Floyd, died at the hospital, and the doctors gave Glenn the same eventual prognosis. The entire lower portion of his body was burned, the flesh on his knees and shins were completely gone, as well as all the toes of his left foot!
His parents were devastated. The doctors recommended amputating both legs. Glenn’s mother refused. Not expected to survive, he somehow did.
