The Musical Wordsmiths

by lyle e davis
Those of us who scribble for a living are understandably impressed with those special people who have the talent of being wordsmiths . . .putting words together to express a thought, a feeling, a life.
How often have us guys wished we could put our feelings into words and melodies . . . and submit them to that special lady in our life?
Troubadours and poets, down
through the ages, have been able to string words and thoughts together to tell a story . . . to incite emotions . . . to bring back memories. Often those words stay with those of us who are mere mortals.
Some of the artists I most admire include Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, John Denver, Neal Diamond . . .
We attended a Kris Kristofferson concert in Escondido about 20 years ago. Amazing They guy came out
on stage, spotlight on him, one microphone . that was it. And he had us spell bound for well over an hour singing one song after another . . . all the songs were his. He wrote them, Most of them I had never heard of . . . but the words were beautiful. A number of them, of course, were his big hits.
To my mind, Kris Kristofferson was not a great singer. He himself acknowledged this when he was first asked to record a demo. His voice was nothing to write home about . .
but his ability to put words together and say things that you and I only wish we could do . . .magic!
Many of his songs still linger in my mind and I recall the beautiful lyrics of them . . . I like the version sung by Ray Price . . .
Don’t look so sad, I know it’s over But life goes on and this old world will keep on turning
Let’s just be glad we had some time to spend together

es that we’re burning [Chorus]
Lay your head upon my pillow
Hold your warm and tender body close to mine
Hear the whisper of the raindrops blowin’ soft against the window And make-believe you love me one more time For the good times.
And another memorable set of lyrics . . .
I have seen the morning burning golden on the mountains in the skies.
Achin’ with the feelin’ of the freedom of an eagle when she flies. Turnin’ on the world the way she smiled upon my soul as I lay dying.
Healin’ as the colours in the sunshine and the shadows of her eyes. Wakin’ in the mornin’ to the feelin’ of her fingers on my skin.
Wipin’ out the traces of the people and the places that I’ve been. Teachin’ me that yesterday was something that I never thought of trying.
Talkin’ of tomorrow and the money, love and time we had to spend...
Lovin’ her was easier than anything I’ll ever do again.

The Waiting Game
A State Trooper was patrolling late at night off the main highway. At nearly midnight, he sees a couple in a car, in lovers’ lane, with the interior light brightly glowing. He carefully approaches the car to get a closer look. Then he sees a young man behind the wheel, reading a computer magazine.
He immediately notices a young woman in the rear seat, filing her fingernails.

Kris Kristofferson
Comin’ close together with a feelin’ that I’ve never known before, in my time. She ain’t ashamed to be a woman, or afraid to be a friend. I don’t know the answer to the easy way she opened every door in my mind.
But dreamin’ was as easy as believin’ it was never gonna end... And lovin’ her was easier than anything I’ll ever do again.
He did it again with . . . Sunday Mornin’ Coming Down
Well I woke up Sunday mornin’, with no way to hold my head that didn’t hurt
Puzzled by this surprising situation, the trooper walks to the car and gently raps on the driver’s window. The young man lowers his window. ‘Uh, yes, Officer’?
The trooper asks: ‘What are you doing’?
The young man says: ‘Well, Officer, I’m reading a magazine.’ Pointing towards the young woman in the back seat the trooper says: ‘And, her, what is she doing’?
The young man shrugs: ‘Sir, I believe she’s filing her fingernails’.
Now, the trooper is totally confused. A young couple, alone, in a car, at night in a lover’s lane and nothing obscene is happening!
The trooper asks: ‘What’s your age, young man’? The young man says: ‘I’m 22, sir’. The trooper asks: ‘And her, .... what’s her age’?
The young man looks at his watch and replies: ‘She’ll be 18 in 11 minutes.’

And the beer I had for breakfast wasn’t bad, so I had one more, for dessert
Then I fumbled through my closet, for my clothes and found my cleanest dirty shirt
And I shaved my face and combed my hair and, stumbled down the stairs to meet the day
On the Sunday morning sidewalks, wishin’ Lord, that I was stoned ‘Cause there’s something in a Sunday, makes a body feel alone
And there’s nothin’ short of dyin’, half as lonesome as the sound
On the sleepin’ city side walks, Sunday mornin’ comin’ down

When using an acetylene torch, don’t feel the flame to see if it’s sufficiently hot.
cal pals and fellow wordsmith was Willie Nelson. Willie writes lovely love songs . . .but he also has an impish quality about him . . like when he wrote that wonderful love song . . . “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die.”
But then he’d turn right around write a true love ballad like . . . “Crazy” ...
Worry, why do I let myself worry
Wondering what in the world did I do
I’m crazy for thinking that my love could hold you
I’m crazy for trying and crazy for crying
And I’m crazy for loving you
This was a major hit for Patsy Cline.
Willie kept right on writing and came up with ... Funny How Time Slips Away, Hello Walls, Hello Darlin’, Night Life, Turn Out the Lights, The Party’s Over, On the Road Again,
Yet another wordsmith/singer made his mark . . . fella named Neil Diamond.

Another artist who worked magic with lyrics was Merle Haggard. One of my favorite songs . . . “Today, I started loving you again.”
Today I Started Loving You Again I’m right back where I’ve really always been;

Recently, Yair, a 3rd grade student at L.R. Green Elementary, was awarded a certificate for good behavior and good citizenship. You can see by his smile how proud he was of it . . . and you could see by the tears in his mommy’s eyes how proud she was of Yair.

With only these few million tears I’ve cried. I should have known the worst was yet to come.

The Real History. Honest. Really. I Wouldn’t Kid You.
Growing Up . . .
I grew up in a place called Omaha, Nebraska. The city was named after a local Indian, Barney Omaha, in recognition of his many contributions to modern day society which included his building of, and dedication to the city, of both Fontanelle Hotel and Fontenelle Park, named after a distant cousin who had earned many merit badges for scalping.
let my heartache mend, then Today I Started Loving You Again.
Sadly, Kris Kristofferson is now gone, dying at age 88; John Denver is gone, killed in a plane crash, Willie Nelson is in his 90’s and has health issues, Neil Diamond is retired and has serious health issues
So where are our new wordsmiths coming from? Who will fill the shoes of the artists cited above . . . certainly not the rap artists . . . rap, in my not so humble opinion is crap. Very few country artists are country anymore . . . and what tries to pass for country ain’t much good.
But that was long before my time. I lived in Omaha long after the tents and wikiups and hogans of the Indian were gone. We lived in a very hoity toity part of Omaha called Benson, a northwestern suburb. Benson also had a high school which some very creative person had named Benson High School. Being in the hoity toity part of Omaha it attracted a great many rich kids.
My family and I were not rich, but middle class. My valet, for example, was not particularly well trained, not even knowing how to mix a decent martini (sniff). I only had one valet, most Benson High School students had at least two. Unlike many other of my fellow students, I did not have an entourage. Couldn’t afford it, being of modest means.
I recall many a morning when my baby blue T-Bird would face the daunting challenge of climbing

With the holidays only days away, our finances may be creeping into our thoughts as we figure out how to pay for the celebrations and gifts. Also, for homeowners, there is the added joy of paying for property taxes. Ugh!
Homeowners who are 62 and over, can research the advantages of putting their home equity to work for them. The Home Equity Conversion Mortgage can unlock the equity you’ve built up in your home to relieve any financial stress.
I have worked with borrowers who really want and need to pay off their existing mortgage. Many of those borrowers use the FHA
Unlocking the Power of Home Equity
Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM). The FHA lending limit is currently $1,209,750. That limit is quite high and allows many homeowners over the age of 62 to do just that, pay off an existing mortgage.
I have also worked with borrowers who want to pay off their existing mortgage, but their home value is much higher, say over $1,500,000. And the youngest borrower is 56. The youngest borrower’s age is perfect for some of the proprietary products that have been designed around the reverse mortgage standards.
The truly wonderful aspect of this reverse mortgage industry is that there are new products developed all the time to allow access to home equity by homeowners. From the ability of a younger borrower to access their equity to the ability to take out a reverse mortgage second with no monthly payment requirement, that is a lot of innovation!
I know there are many of you out there who have questions, but don’t want to open that door to a slew of calls. So you never fill out the form online to see how the program
could work for you. I don’t blame you! Once those online forms are clicked, your phone and email is blown up!
I can promise you that if you just want to get an idea of how this could make your life easier, please call me. I will not pester you to death! I truly want you to find out how these programs could make your life easier. And, who knows, it may not be the best fit for you, and I will never push you into something I wouldn’t put myself or my mother into.
The CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) has put together a really great booklet on reverse mortgages, Reverse Mortgages-A Discussion Guide. It explains exactly what the program is and how you can take advantage of the benefits. If you would like a copy of this booklet, you can go to www. cfpb.org and search for Reverse Mortgages. You can also contact me and I will email a copy to you, meet you and provide one to you or mail one to you. Your choice!
You may just want to put it off until after the holidays, sometimes that’s the easiest action. And I don’t blame you. But remember, those holiday bills start rolling in come January 1st, and that’s not always easy either. Just remember, I’m only a phone call or email away! And I am here to explain the whole process to you and show you how each program would benefit you. Education is the key! The more you know, the more you can move forward in making the best financial decision for you and your family.

best buy refused to replace a broken appliance -- until this happened.
Amber Lise is trapped in an eightweek ordeal with Best Buy over a malfunctioning microwave oven. Best Buy repeatedly denies her exchange request. Is there a way to change its answer?
Q: I bought a microwave from Best Buy, and it doesn’t work. Technicians have replaced 10 parts over four visits, but they can’t fix it.
Now the unit has started smoking, and a technician has admitted that they may never be able to repair it. Best Buy refuses to replace the microwave, saying it doesn’t meet their “monetary limit.” What can I do?
~ Amber Lise,
Glen Ellyn, Illinois
A: Best Buy should have replaced your microwave quickly after it failed to repair it. It looks like you paid extra for Best Buy’s protection warranty, which covers you up to the regular retail price at the time of purchase. And that was the problem -- with all the technician visits, it seems Best Buy had already exceeded the price of the microwave.
Federal law protects you from products that don’t work as advertised. Under the Magnuson-Moss

Warranty Act, if a company can’t repair a defective product after a reasonable number of attempts, it must offer either a replacement or refund. You’re also covered by Illinois’ Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act, which prohibits companies from misleading customers about warranties.
But mostly, you’re covered by common sense. You can’t sell someone a microwave that doesn’t work and then give up on repairing it because it’s too expensive. That’s just wrong.
Best Buy’s claim about a “monetary limit” for exchanges is understandable from the company’s perspective, but not from yours. You had a microwave that was smoking. That’s a terrible habit.
Best Buy should have replaced the unit immediately after the third repair attempt, especially given the safety risk. Instead, it wasted your time and it might have endangered your household.
To prevent this, always document every interaction (emails, repair
logs) and know your warranty rights. You had a brief exchange with the company by email, but were doing most of the communication by phone. Remember, there’s no record of a phone conversation, which makes it more difficult to resolve a consumer problem.
If a company stalls, escalate to executives immediately. I publish contact details for Best Buy’s leadership team on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.
I’m happy to say this case didn’t require my intervention. I shared the executive contacts with you, and after you reached out to Best Buy’s Chief Resolution Officer, the company finally approved the exchange. While I’m glad Best Buy resolved your case, it shouldn’t require executive intervention to honor a warranty.

5th District Supervisor • Jim Desmond san diego County shouldn’t be a Testing Ground for Violent Offenders

For years, I’ve been sounding the alarm about a deeply dangerous policy: the State’s practice of releasing Sexually Violent Predators — the most violent, high-risk offenders in our system — into residential communities. Not in Borrego Springs, not in Jacumba, not in Rancho Bernardo, and not anywhere near families who deserve to feel safe.
This week, we were reminded exactly why.
SVP Alvin Quarles — known as the “bolder-than-most” rapist —
was ordered back to Coalinga State Hospital after violating the strict conditions of his release. While he did not commit a new crime, he violated his conditions to such an extent that he’s now back in custody. That alone exposes just how fragile, flawed, and dangerous this placement system is.
Let’s be clear about who we’re dealing with.
Quarles brutally terrorized at least a dozen women — breaking into homes and hotel rooms, assaulting victims at knifepoint, and even forcing loved ones to watch. He was sentenced to 50 years to life. Yet despite his history, despite community opposition, the State still pushed to place him in San Diego County.
And when no community would accept him — for obvious reasons — the State devised a workaround: label him a “transient.” No real address. No community notification. No accountability. It’s a loophole designed to avoid public scrutiny, and I’ve been calling it out from the beginning.
Now, after yet another violation, Quarles is being returned to state
custody. But the truth is simple: this never should have been allowed to happen.
San Diego County is not a dumping ground for dangerous offenders. Families should not be forced to live with the uncertainty of SVPs being released through loopholes that hide their location and ignore legitimate safety concerns.
It’s time for the State Legislature to act:
End “transient” releases. End secret placements. End this reckless system once and for all.
Our neighborhoods deserve transparency. Families deserve protection. Victims deserve justice.
We warned Sacramento. They ignored us. Now the consequences are clear — and unacceptable.
I will keep fighting until this dangerous practice ends for good.

Vista Mayor • John Franklin Ending Homelessness by Helping
People in Crisis get Help

I am proud to have worked, side-by-side with Supervisor Jim Desmond, to build a new mental health care crisis facilities in Vista. We believe that truly loving people is getting them the help they need, not leaving them to suffer and die on our streets.
I’m proud to recognize Jim for leading the creation of the new Tri-City Psychiatric Health Facility as we cut the ribbon. It’s a critical resource that North County needs to help get people off our streets and the treatment they deserve.
Last year, 495 homeless individuals lost their lives on the streets of San Diego County. People living unsheltered face mortality rates up to 40 times higher than those with stable housing. It’s clear that county leaders must expand the use of involuntary treatment if we’re serious about saving the lives of mentally ill individuals living on our streets.
No mentally stable person chooses to remain unsheltered. And with billions already spent, a lack of funding is not what’s preventing us from helping the 5,714 unsheltered people living across the county. Allowing severely mentally ill individuals to deteriorate and die outdoors is not compassionate — and it certainly does not respect some imagined “choice” to live unsheltered.
We cannot accept a system in which hundreds die each year while taxpayer dollars are squandered on programs that fail to address the root causes. Real solutions require both compassion and accountability. This is about restoring safety and dignity — to our communities and to the vulnerable people suffering in plain sight.
Vista Mayor John Franklin, www.johnfranklin.org

Dear Editor,
As a San Diego physician and small business owner, I see every day how federal decisions shape what happens in our exam rooms — from patient access to staffing and the long-term health of our community. Those of us on the frontlines need to be part of the conversations that influence the policies guiding our work.
That’s why I recently traveled to Washington, D.C., with a group of California entrepreneurs for the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Summit, where we highlighted how national policies affect small businesses like mine — from rising costs to workforce challenges. I hope that sharing our perspective underscored how essential it is for policymakers to stay connected to the small businesses serving their communities every day.
More than 2,000 small business owners attended the summit. Even with rising costs and persistent workforce challenges, many of us remain committed to expanding access to care. A recent Goldman Sachs survey found 78% of small business owners feel confident about growth in the year ahead.
Strong partnership between government and small businesses — including healthcare providers — is critical to sustaining that momentum and strengthening San Diego’s wellbeing.

The Holiday season is back and so is Toys for Tots at 5 County airports
By Gig Conaughton, County of San Diego Communications Office
The Holiday Season is here again. Santa is getting ready to ho-ho-ho and bring smiles to the faces of children around the County and the globe.
And the County of San Diego and the U.S. Marines are ready to help you get in on some of Santa’s joy. All you have to do is drop off a new, unwrapped toy in a Toys for Tots donation box at one of five County airports for local children.
Donation boxes are already set up at those five airports: McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, Gillespie Field in El Cajon, Fallbrook Airpark in Fallbrook, Ramona Airport in Ramona and Borrego Valley Airport in Borrego Springs.
The boxes will remain open until 1 p.m. Saturday, December 13.
All donations will be given out to children in San Diego County

As your State Assemblymember, one of my top priorities is protecting the health, safety, and quality of life of our communities here in San Diego County.
Unfortunately, we are facing a growing crisis that Sacramento and local San Diego politicians continue to ignore: massive amounts of trash, sewage-contaminated debris, and toxic runoff being dumped intentionally by the Mexican Government into San Diego County— with taxpayers left to clean up the mess.
That’s why I am calling for action to end this environmental disaster.
The Problem: Mexico Is illegally dumping trash into San Diego
Recent reporting has confirmed what many of us in the border re-

communities. Pilots are welcome to fly in to deliver their donations at the airports.
Donations being accepted are new, unwrapped toys, bikes, games, dolls, stuffed animals and other things to play with that will help brighten up a child’s holidays.
This year, Fallbrook Airpark and Ramona Airport will hold special
Toys for Tots collection events in December. Uniformed Marines will be at those events to personally collect your gifts.
So, get that good holiday feeling! Join the County of San Diego and the U.S. Marine Corps and put smiles on the faces of local kids by dropping off a new toy for a child. The five airports are located at:
• Borrego Valley Airport: 1820 Palm Canyon Dr, Borrego Springs, CA, 92004.
• Fallbrook Airpark: 2155 South Mission Road, Fallbrook, CA 92028.
• Gillespie Field: 1960 Joe Crosson Drive, El Cajon, CA, 92020.
• McClellan Palomar Airport: 2192 Palomar Airport Road, Carlsbad, CA, 92011.
• Ramona Airport: 2450 Montecito Road, Ramona, CA, 92065.

California State Assembly District 75 • Carl DeMaio demanding End to mexico’s Trash dumping
gion have warned for years: the Tijuana River is funneling staggering amounts of trash and polluted debris into San Diego County.
A 1,200-foot trash boom was installed just north of the border and captured:
• 20 tons of debris in a single hour during a storm
• More than 500 tons in one rainy season
• With operators stating, “100% of this trash comes from Mexico.”
This is not accidental—and it’s not harmless. It is the direct result of Mexico failing to manage its waste and the U.S. government failing to enforce the rules.
The consequences are pollution, beach closures, and costs pushed onto San Diego County
San Diego residents are paying the price for this cross-border environmental disaster.
The impacts include:
• Contaminated waterways across the South Bay
• Repeated beach closures at Imperial Beach and the surrounding areas
• Ecological damage to sensitive estuaries and coastal habitats
• Increased landfill burdens and
disposal costs
• Public health threats from sewage-laden debris
• Taxpayers are stuck with the cleanup bill
This is an environmental injustice—and San Diego County should not be treated as Mexico’s dumping ground.
The Solution A Federal Investigation and Enforcement Actions
Because Gavin Newsom and Sacramento politicians refuse to act, I have sent a formal investigation request to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC), demanding answers on:
• Why foreign trash is entering U.S. landfills
• Whether regulatory gaps are allowing cross-border dumping
• How much of the cost burden is being shifted onto San Diego taxpayers
• What environmental and health damage has already been documented
It is outrageous that the Mexican government is dumping their trash on our side of the border—and forcing US taxpayers to deal with
the costs and environmental damage. Gavin Newsom refuses to act, so I’m asking the Trump Administration to intervene.
This is not just an environmental issue—it’s a financial, publichealth, and moral issue.
Why should San Diego taxpayers pay for another country’s waste?
Why should our beaches, our rivers, and our coastal communities suffer because federal agencies failed to enforce our environmental laws?
Every day the federal government fails to act is another day San Diego residents face polluted waterways, closed beaches, and higher costs.
What’s Next in Our Fight to Stop Mexico’s Illegal Dumping
I will continue pushing for:
• Immediate federal enforcement
• Full transparency and accountability
• Environmental protections for border communities
• Relief for San Diego taxpayers
San Diego County deserves clean water, safe beaches, and a federal government that does its job.
a Wheel good investment
The Luggage that survived 350 days on the road
by Christopher Elliott
Some travel disasters start small. It’s a wobbly wheel you hardly notice until you’re double-timing it through the terminal and your carry-on suddenly feels like you’re dragging an anchor.
After spending 350 days a year on the road with a rotating cast of carry-ons, I’ve discovered that the smallest component of your luggage can decide the entire fate of your trip. Fortunately, the luggage industry is getting serious about wheels.
“Wheels are one of the most critical components of performance luggage,” says Andrew Shripka, chief marketing officer at Travelpro.
He’s right. The era of cheap casters that snap off at the first sight of a cobblestone street is finally ending, and not a moment too soon.
The best new technology is borrowed from the world of sports, with high-performance luggage now featuring heavy-duty polyurethane wheels with ball bearings — essentially, inline skate wheels adapted for your suitcase. Innovations like Travelpro’s PrecisionGlide system promise a smooth, non-veering glide across every surface, from airport tile to gravel.
But which bags actually survived the test? After a year of relentless travel, here are the carry-ons, cubes, and backpacks worth rolling with.
The Enduring Performers
I’ve been using the Victorinox Spectra 3.0 ($575) for two uninterrupted years. It’s been around the world with me twice. The Spectra is made with high-performance recycled polycarbonate that can take a beating. And believe me, my carry-on has taken one. American Airlines baggage handlers in Spokane, Wash., put a massive dent in the side of it last month. I opened the bag, applied gentle pressure to the affected area, and it popped back to its original shape. I just noticed that one of the main handle rails is starting to come a little loose, but after that kind of abuse, I’m not complaining. Also, the wheels were ahead of their time, offering an air-cushioned ride.
Peak Design’s Roller Pro ($599) has a smart design that saves space, allowing you to pack more in its hybrid hardside/softside polycarbonate interior. But my favorite part is — you guessed it — the heavy-duty 60mm wheels. They’re replaceable, so when they start to

get worn out, you don’t have to throw the entire carry-on away.
I also liked the Carl Friedrik Hybrid Carry-on X ($695). It has ultra-smooth 360-degree Hinomoto silent spinner wheels and a front tech pocket, which allows you to avoid digging through your bag at security to grab your laptop. Also, it’s the best-looking bag of the ones I tested, definitely the kind of luggage you want to be seen with.
Travelpro just released the Heritage Black collection from its popular Platinum Elite line ($735). It’s an upgrade featuring a matte black exterior and brown leather trim, and it holds up well to the rigors of flying. Mine has survived everything from angry baggage handlers to cloudbursts on the tarmac in Tahiti.
Even luxury manufacturers are getting serious about wheels. Jack Ezon, founder of Embark Beyond, once fit three weeks’ worth of clothing into his favorite wheeled carry-on luggage, the Rimowa Cabin Plus ($1,625).
“This is hands-down the best bag to travel with,” he says.
Rimowa’s high-end system also uses ball-bearing-mounted wheels with cushioned axles to guarantee a smooth ride.
By the way, you don’t have to spend more than a grand to get quality luggage. Samsonite’s Freeform ($299) has great wheels, and so does Travelpro’s Maxlite 5 Hardside Spinner ($147).
The other 2026 essentials
Not all great luggage has wheels, of course. The Knack Series 1 Medium Backpack ($235) remains my go-to backpack. This expandable luggage holds all my electronics, a

couple changes of clothes and toiletries, with plenty of room left for wires, adapters, and snacks. After two trips around the world over almost three years, one of the pockets has started to fray slightly, but it doesn’t interfere with the functionality. What I like best is that you can carry almost everything you need on the plane with you, allowing you to avoid those pesky luggage fees.
The Nomatic Toiletry Bag 2.0 ($79) is a minimalist accessory that discreetly fits into your backpack or carry-on. It does one thing exceptionally well: It keeps your toiletries, which can leak, from getting into everything else. There’s also an optional hanging strap and dedicated toothbrush pocket—a clever design element. The only downside? It’s so discreet that I’ve almost left it in my hotel a time or two.
Nomatic also has durable packing cubes ($19 to $39) that held up nicely on a recent trip across the South Pacific. I also packed a few new Knack packing cubes. The Medium Cube ($25) can carry all
my socks and underwear, but the clever Knack Packing Insert ($55) fits perfectly into the hidden suitcase compartment in my Knack backpack and scrunches two full changes of clothes.
Here’s Your Carry-on Checklist
Choosing the right carry-on may be the single most important decision you’ll make for hassle-free travel (other than picking the right travel companion, of course).
It’s the difference between breezing through an airport and interrupting your vacation early with a snapped handle or a lost bag. The fundamentals of a great piece of gear — durability, smart organization, and, yes, those wheels — remain constant.
Here’s How To Do It
Wheels above all. Look for polyurethane wheels with ball bearings (like those on inline skates) and cushioned axles. They should roll

smoothly and silently and, ideally, be replaceable. A wobbly wheel is a red flag.
The handle test. The telescoping handle system is often a point of failure. It should feel rock-solid when extended, with minimal wobble, and lock securely into place at various heights. Look for something made of aircraft-grade aluminum.
Organizational smarts. Look for features like a front-access tech pocket (to easily grab your laptop at security), dedicated pockets for a water bottle or toothbrush, and an expandable compartment for those last-minute additions. This also applies to backpacks and toiletry kits.
Material strength. High-performance recycled polycarbonate is great for hardshell bags, as it’s designed to take a dent and pop back into shape. For soft-sided bags, look for durable, high-denier nylon or polyester that resists abrasion and moisture.
Finally, read the warranty carefully. A manufacturer that stands behind its product for a reasonable amount of time is a sign of quality. A quality warranty covers manufacturing and material defects, and the best ones last a lifetime.
process to get started is simple. First, select your denomination and bet, then hit spin. For slot machines, the denomination is the value of each credit, and the bet per spin multiplies that by the number of credits wagered. For example, at a 2¢ denomination, 50 credits would cost $1.00. Valley View Casino prides itself on being a “penny house,” with sweetspot low denominations, but a variety of machines offer varying wins for different denominations and bets.
Valley View Casino’s tip: Test out multiple machines on the floor and take note of how often smaller payouts or bonuses play out during the first few spins to find your preferred games. AGS Dragon Blast, one of Valley View Casino’s newest slots, is a perfect place to start with its high entertainment value, side bonuses and clear visuals.
The best way for new players to kick off their visit at Valley View Casino is by starting with brunch at The Café, where they can enjoy American classics, Asian specialty dishes and views of the stunning Palomar Mountain Range.
Bottom line: invest in the wheels — and quality.
I’ve come to realize that the difference between a minor inconvenience and a travel disaster isn’t the plane or the destination—it’s the quality of a single, small polyurethane wheel.
Beyond that, invest in durability, even if you have to pay a little extra. Look for luggage with a simple, proven design that features sturdy material and heavy-duty zippers. I’ve seen too many frilly, gimmicky bags fall apart at the worst possible time. Don’t let that happen to you.
A great bag is a loyal companion. A bad one is a souvenir of stress. So, the next time you’re standing at the baggage carousel, remember this: get the luggage with the good wheels. Because every dollar you save on cheap luggage is a dollar you will eventually spend replacing it.

intermediate Players Learning smart Patterns
For those ready to step up their slot machine plays, layered bonuses and progressives may be the next adventure. AGS Dragon Blast, which made its California debut exclusively at Valley View Casino, uses a layered approach to big wins, leaving players with multiple types of bonus features that can trigger at different moments or combine for more chances at higher payouts.
Valley View Casino’s tip: Alternating between bets can help players test the game’s volatility; that is, how often a slot pays out and at what size. Volatility also varies on different slot machines. While machines like Dragon Link are known for higher-paying high swings, other games like Lightning Link are known for stretching bankrolls for longer gameplay. Trying your personally tested strategies with new machines can provide endless gameplay on the floor.
Using a Valley View Casino Players Club card is key for casual players to level up their wins. With free slot play, exclusive promotions and giveaways and a variety of exciting perks, the Valley View Casino Players Club card gives extra value to every session on the casino floor.
advanced Players maximizing strategy
Casino enthusiasts know that strategy wins. While some seasoned players focus on table games, slots like AGS Dragon Blast shouldn’t be overlooked. Built with thousands of winning lines and multiple layered bonuses and progressives, slots can be just as rewarding as other games on the floor.
Valley View Casino’s tip: Valley View Casino is known for their high turnover on new machines. Every year, 40 to 50% of the casino floor is refreshed with the newest games from top trade shows. Combined with the old classics that helped Valley View Casino earn the title of loosest slots in San Diego, their casino floor is ready for seasoned players to bring their tried-and-true strategies to a variety of new machines to win big.
The timing couldn’t be better for advanced players looking to hit the casino floor. With football season underway, Valley View Casino & Hotel offers a variety of cocktails, local draft beers and wines that pair perfectly with dining specials and exciting giveaways like Dave’s $250,000 Weekend Windfall. Whatever the adventure, Valley View Casino brings the ultimate game night experience.

The Pastor says . . . THaNks-giViNg
The common thought of Thanksgiving is that it is a day off work, family gatherings, buying groceries, preparing meals, pumpkin pie, and a whole lot of work. It isn’t that people resent all the extra activity, because it is satisfying to put oneself to the task and enjoy the compliments of a job well done. Not all share in this, however. Many people will be eating their meals alone. Others don’t have the resources to buy the food they once enjoyed. There will be memories of deceased spouses who once made the day happy and enjoyable, leaving an empty spot at the table.
Today’s world is different from the days when you went to your grandparents’ home to eat grandma’s Thanksgiving meal. It is now common to order much of the food precooked at a restaurant or other eatery and have it delivered to the house or apartment. And it could be sharing a meal on a cruise ship or in some faraway place, such as a remote island or a foreign setting. The home gathering and image are long gone. In so many ways, there is a need to define at least the traditional spirit of Thanksgiving.
These differences don’t mean that we lose what the day is intended to be. It is important to ask what that intention was supposed to be. Children in grade school are introduced to the provable story of the early Pilgrims who shared a feast in the midst of hardship, often with the thought of the benevolent Indians who enabled the Pilgrims to survive. We add to this gratitude and thanks to God, who provided the natural resources. Usually, this scene pictures the father of the home calling the family to prayer before he carves the turkey. It is a homey scene that humbles us in contrast to our modern world of celebrating the day.
This column calls for more. It is an appeal to look at the word “thanksgiving”. For what and to whom do we give thanks? Is it even important to give thanks? Is it only an expression, an event we have inherited from a story that is not clearly known? Or is there virtue in the very need to give thanks? Do we make thanks a principle of life? Can we live without it? Is giving thanks a spiritual call or need? Does it take us beyond all the social activity into the spiritual realm? The Biblical expression in the Psalms suggests a deeper experience than a turkey dinner. It takes us to the very throne of God with “Give thanks unto the Lord” Psalm 136). Thirty-five verses call us to give thanks to God in the Bible. What is the value of doing this? The value lies in recognizing our dependence and in appreciating God’s blessings. It fulfills the meaning of ‘THANKS-GIVING’. To truly do this, we need two items. The first is one to give thanks to, namely, God, and secondly, something for which we are truly grateful, i.e., all that God has given us.

In 1964, with my college degree and active duty military service behind me, it was time to get serious about the future. I needed to find a profession and a life partner. I found both at Belden Corp in Richmond, Indiana. I hired on as an Industrial Engineer and within weeks I discovered Nome, a really sweet 21 year old girl working as a timekeeper. Nome was a divorcee with two small children, (Jim and LaRee). We were married in 1965 and suddenly I was a family man with a profession. Life was good. We added two more children later in the 1960s (Stephen and Julia). My career blossomed. As Operations Vice President for, NCR,

I’ve heard the phrase several times these past few weeks. “The Devil is beating his wife.”
It’s used to describe a “sun shower.” That’s when it’s raining while the sun is shining. The rain represents his wife’s tears, and the sun is the devil’s anger. The phrase is more common in the southern United States, even though it originated in France.
Sun showers are confusing for us, and even worse for our pets. Some dogs don’t mind the rain if the sun is shining. Others absolutely refuse to use the restroom facilities conveniently located in the backyard
United Telecom, Packard Bell and Vision Technologies we moved from Indiana to Florida, Minnesota, Canada and California. In 1995 we left the corporate world, purchased our sixth and final home in San Marcos and opened The Computer Factory. This winter Nome and I celebrated our sixtieth wedding anniversary and thirtieth year at The Computer Factory. We’re now in our 80’s and the time has come for us to make our final “curtain call”. It’s time to travel and visit with relatives and old friends while we’re still healthy enough to do it. We want to turn our business over to folks who understand and care as much about our customers as we do.
This is a unique time in the 300,000+ year history of our species. At the beginning of the 21st century mankind found a way to combine access to his entire growing information base with an intelligence to process it for answers and solutions. It’s called the AI (artificial intelligence) enhanced IW (Intelligent Web). This linkage of the worlds Internet servers to AI has existed for less than a quarter century, but its profound impact on the future course of human history is certain. The first generation of folks to grow up under the influence of the IW are called DNs (digital natives). They are 30 years old and younger. Most were constantly exposed to the IW throughout their
formative and educative years. The results of their early and constant exposure to the IW encouraged them to incorporate some of the IWs assets as “internal” rather than “external” resources. This represents the most profound difference between DNs and the older generations of DI (digital immigrants) who grew to adulthood prior to the existence of the IW.
The IW combines the rapidly expanding sum of human knowledge with an AI that is constantly evolving. AI is getter smarter every day. There is absolutely no doubt that the IW already capable of holding infinitely more information than any human and there is also no doubt that the AI is capable of finding reliable answers and solu-
tions faster than any human. There seems to be nothing to stop the IW from taking over the job of doing our thinking for us. Since the IW is a product of human ingenuity, it can’t possibly know more than humans do because we authored all its information.
But what if we left a few things out simply because we didn’t know how to program them? Things that exert an influence on nearly everything we do in our day to day lives. Things like love, faith and compassion are difficult to program. Are they important? These things seem to be important to the over 45 year old DIs and that’s who most of our customers are! Let’s talk about it next week.
if there’s even a light sprinkle.
What’s scary about a little rain? Run out, do your business, then come back.
One guy said he used an umbrella to take his dog out. The umbrella wasn’t for him. He got soaked while he held the umbrella over his dog.
Google says dogs won’t go out in the rain because of “fear, discomfort from wetness or cold, or sensory overload from loud sounds.” One expert said to keep it positive. Take your dog out under a covered area. Reward it with its favorite treats. He said to be patient and try not to get frustrated. That will increase anxiety.
I’ll try to remember that when my dog refuses to set paw out the door while I’m drenched, in the rain, begging her to come out.
So, what do you do?
If your dog is okay with it, try a raincoat. Some dogs don’t like get-

ting their paws wet. Try dog booties. (They’re hilarious, trying to walk when you first put them on.)
Find a covered area where you can walk. It doesn’t have to be 100% dry. Just enough so your dog will tolerate the rain. Some dogs are okay with a large umbrella (big enough for both of you.)
Keep moving! When you get to the
door, don’t hesitate. Walk out like you always do, then keep going. Your dog will sense hesitation.
When your dog does what you intend it to do, give it lots of praise and maybe some dog treats to reinforce good behavior.
Dogs follow our lead. If you make your walk in the rain fun, it can be a fun experience for both of you.

the steep hill on Maple Street from about 69th to 63rd, before finally reaching that lovely level stretch of land through downtown Benson. I have to compliment my chauffeur, Nicky, for the always comfortable, sometimes very scenic drives. I always enjoyed viewing the colorful Benson Baptist Church (where I was later to marry a Countess from Scotland, the lovely Mary (sorry, don’t quite recall her last name. I’m bad on names). I also recall the excitement as I passed Kremer Funeral Home, the Benson Post Office, Steve’s Grill, Feierman Jewelers, and the Benson Theater (where we used to always scrape together $0.09 cents for every Saturday morning and see both cartoons as well as exciting adventure movies, including my favorite hero, Lash Larue). Those were wonderful times.
Arriving at Benson High School, I was met every morning by a smiling John “Pinky” Aronson, the Vice Principal, who would open the door to my T-Bird, shake my hand, wave at Nicky, and welcome me to the school. I remember one day I suggested to my fellow classmates that we all honor “Pinky” Aronson by dressing in completely pink clothing. I wore pink trousers, pink socks, a pink shirt, white belt and white shoes. I was a sight to behold. The entire school turned out in pink that day.
Mr. Aronson, I’m sure, was amused.
As we walked together up the sidewalk leading to the building I was often approached by other students who did not have transportation and had to walk to school. They would compliment me on my TBird and mention how it would be nice if, maybe sometime, I could give them a ride, seeing as how I was going in the same direction. I always made it a point to shake their hand or give them a friendly wave, show a warm smile and say, “what a perfectly grand idea. Do let me give it some thought and get back to you!” (I have always found it to be a good idea to treat those of a different social class kindly. Even though a majority of us were middle class, some of these forsaken kids didn’t have so much as a valet to their name. I tried to brighten their lives by being kind to them and favoring them with, at the very least, with my wonderfully contented smile).
I soon joined the rest of those from my social class and we would tell marvelously funny stories, describe our valet’s hilarious shortcomings and/or great accomplishments. Being of modest means, my valet, Nicky, had to double as my chauffeur. Several times I thought
of giving Nicky notice but she was such a strikingly lovely creature that I found it hard to part with her. Besides, she was often of great comfort to me in times of sorrow, like when our cook would forget both Brie and a sufficient amount of caviar in my box lunch she had prepared for me daily. Nicky (short for Nicole) would put her arms around me and murmur soft things in my ear. I always felt so much better; sometimes, to the point of skipping school for several hours to be with Nicky, the more to enjoy her comforting.
In late morning I would always head for gym class, presided over by Art Harris, our football coach. Mr. Harris was a strapping 3′ tall but he was a human dynamo, often running around in circles, clapping his hands and yelling, “Let’s go! Let’s go!” to no one in particular. I was very fond of Mr. Harris, however. I suppose it might have been because I went to him one day, very sad, and told him my favorite pet rabbit, which I had called “Bunny” had passed away. I suggested to Mr. Harris that we might memorialize Bunny by naming the school, and in particular, its football team, the Benson High School Bunnies.
Mr. Harris slapped his thighs, and exclaimed, “that’s a wonderful idea! It shall be done!”
And so, to this day, members who attended, and who still attend, my alma mater, are known as The Benson High School Bunnies.
All good things, however, must come to an end. After four years of absolute bliss, my high school days came to an end. I graduated (flipped my tassle, as we say) and went on to a brilliantly successful career in business and also became a highly successful and adored international spy.
That, too, is all behind me now. Nicky is still with me. She stays in the spare bedroom here at the Davis Mansion, still chauffeurs me about town, still mixes me my martinis, still performs as a valet, and is always there to offer me comforting words, thoughts and deeds whenever mean ol’ Mary says or does something to wound my sensitive ego.
Mary recognizes that Nicky is simply my valet, nothing more, (at least, that’s what she believes) someone with whom I would find living life to be particularly difficult.
Nicky was even with me during my exciting and adventuresome years as an international spy.
But that, as we say, is another story.
Buy me a drink sometime . . . maybe I’ll tell you. (Some parts, however, are still classified. Those parts would take two drinks).
orphaned bear Cubs move to sonoma County Wildlife rescue

Two orphaned black bear cubs who arrived at San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center in July are now settling in at Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue with two other orphaned bear cubs.
The cubs were originally rescued in Calaveras County by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) after being spotted wandering alone for several days without their mother, whose fate remains unknown. The siblings — both male and approximately 5-6 months old upon arrival — were brought to SDHS’ Ramona Wildlife Center on July 24, 2025, for care and rehabilitation.
For 119 days, under the supervision of SDHS’ Project Wildlife team, the cubs received comprehensive medical evaluations and ongoing behavioral monitoring to prepare them for life back in the wild. During their stay, they were housed in a large, naturalistic outdoor enclosure designed to minimize human contact while helping them develop the survival skills they will need for their native habitat.
To continue to improve their
chances of succeeding on their own in the wild in the Spring, CDFW made the decision to move the cubs to Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue to hibernate with their cub patients. The cubs departed the Ramona Wildlife Center on Nov. 20, 2025, and were flown to Sonoma by Flying Tails Animal Rescue.
“In wildlife rehabilitation, true success is always a team effort,” said Autumn Welch, Wildlife Operations Manager at SDHS’ Ramona Wildlife Center. “Our mission is to give every animal the strongest chance to thrive in the wild, and we’re grateful to CDFW, Flying Tails and Sonoma for being such valued partners in that work.”
“Monitoring the behavior and survival of these cubs will help inform future black bear conservation and management in California,” said Arjun Dheer, CDFW’s Statewide Black Bear Coordinator. “Black bears are remarkably adaptable animals, which has contributed to their presence across many of the state’s diverse habitats. California has a stable population of about 60,000 black bears, the most in the contiguous United States.”
Ever since I can remember I’ve had the burning desire to discover new places, new adventures. Because of this, I set out to discover a new country . . . and I was successful. I even ventured inland a great many miles where I discovered a place I called Minnesota. “This,” I thought, “would be a great place for Scandinavians.” So I headed back to Norway to recruit settlers. While I was gone, some clown named Columbus claimed he discovered America. Life ain’t fair. Except life also gave us The Paper. I read it whenever and wherever I go exploring and only buy from those who advertise in The Paper. It’s a Viking thing. Your friend, Eric the Red

To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate or both, of Donald Stafford, Don Stafford.
A Petition for Probate has been filed by Luisa Stafford in the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego. The Petition for probate requests that Luisa Stafford be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent.
The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act.
(This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.)
The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority.
A hearing on the petition will be held in this court as follows:
Date: December 10, 2025
Time: 1:30 pm
Dept: 1603
Address of court: Same as noted above.
If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney.
If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk.
