Crop reports provide essential insights for producers and stakeholders throughout the growing season.
Agri-News, May 5, 2025
Starting this month, Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation (AGI), in collaboration with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) and Alberta Agricultural Fieldmen, will launch the annual Alberta Crop Reporting program. The initiative, which runs from May until the end of harvest in October or November, aims to provide critical insights into the province’s agricultural landscape.
“The Alberta Crop Report captures timely information related to crop production in Alberta during the current crop season,” says Samuel Ampomah, crop statistician with AGI. “Data collected through the surveys, along with the information from other sources such as climate maps, are used to compile the weekly crop reports at both provincial and regional levels.”
The program gathers valuable data through weekly surveys that track moisture levels, crop conditions, seeding and harvest progress, insect and disease outbreaks, yield potential and crop quality.
“Crop reports help producers make informed management decisions and are used by the Ministry, industry, and other stakeholders for various purposes, including drought monitoring and forecasting of production insurance payments,” Ampomah explains.
The 2025 season will see reports released every week throughout the growing season. Both AFSC and AGI will alternate responsibility for producing the reports.
The first report for the 2025 growing season is set to be released on May 9, with weekly reports to follow until the end of the crop year. NH

Since the PCDMN rust risk update in early February 2025 there has been a change in rust risk coming out of the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Xianming Chen, USDA-ARS, and WSU, Pullman, WA, issues one or more stripe rust forecasts for the PNW region in the USA. Unfortunately, winter wheat crops in the PNW region serve as an important source of stripe rust inoculum for Prairie producers. These PNW forecasts from Dr. Chen serve as a heads-up for Prairie cereal producers regarding potential issues with stripe rust in the coming growing season.
Dr. Chen evaluates weather data (mainly temperatures) from November to February of each year as it impacts potential overwintering and subsequent development of stripe rust on PNW winter wheat crops. In his March 5, 2025 risk update, Dr. Chen indicated that the 2025 forecast was downgraded from severe in January 2025 to low in early March 2025 Stripe Rust Forecast, March 5, 2025 | Stripe Rust | Washington
State University). This change from early January to early February was based primarily on cold February temperatures that are less conducive to overwintering of the stripe rust pathogen. In early March the forecasted low risk with 18% yield losses for susceptible wheat varieties, down from 41% based on his early January forecast. In early March 2025, Dr. Chen and colleagues did not observe stripe rust in winter wheat fields (commercial and research), compared to several observations of this disease in late February 2024. As of March 5, 2025, Dr. Chen’s recommendation for the eastern regions of the Pacific Northwest was that fungicides were not recommended, except where symptoms are observed later in spring/summer 2025.
As of April 18, 2025, Dr. Chen updated the stripe rust situation in the Pacific Northwest to indicate stripe rust symptoms were observed in several research fields, but not around the Pullman area (Stripe Rust Update, April 18, 2025 | Stripe Rust | Washington
State University). Observations made in early April indicated where stripe rust was present in research fields it was at lower levels versus the same time in 2024. Of note were higher levels in western Washington at the Mount Vernon trial location, which typically has increased levels of stripe rust each year. In addition, compared to 2024 higher stripe rust levels were found at their winter wheat trial site in Garfield County at Central Ferry, WA. Overall, Dr. Chen indicates the occurrence of symptoms in 2025 has been later versus 2024. Given these recent observations, Dr. Chen is now recommending fungicide application on susceptible to moderately susceptible varieties at the time of spring herbicide applications, especially where stripe rust severity or incidence is 5% or more. Dr. Chen also reported that in addition to stripe rust observations in Washington State and Oregon, rust symptoms have also been reported in Georgia (Dr. A. Martinez, UGA, stripe rust of wheat and crown rust of oat), Louisiana (Dr. S.A. Harrison, LSU, crown rust of oat, leaf and stripe rust of wheat), and Texas (Dr. B. Gerrish, TAMU, leaf and stripe rust), although generally at low levels.
Dr. K. Anderson Onofre, KSU, most recently indicated that the risk of stripe rust in Kansas as of April 23, 2025,was low with no current reports of stripe rust in Kansas (https://eupdate.agronomy.ksu.edu/article/ should-you-spray-stripe-rust-and-other-wheat-diseases-to-watch-for-in-kansas-638-4). For 2025, Dr. Anderson Onofre, KSU, indicated a general rule of thumb is that if stripe rust is observed prior to mid April, then stripe rust risk in Kansas is higher, and thus with no current observations the risk is lower for 2025. Dr. Anderson Onofre also indicated that given observations of stripe and leaf rust in Texas, scouting fields for rust symptoms will be important for Kansas farmers.
The Prairie Crop Disease Network (PCDMN) is cur-
rently preparing for the 2025 growing season and will launch weekly cereal rust risk forecasts starting in mid May 2025. With the help of Environment Canada, we look at reverse wind trajectory occurrence and frequency for Prairie sites from the PNW, and Texas/Oklahoma, Kansas/Nebraska regions. These trajectories can readily move cereal stripe, leaf, stem and crown rust uredospores from source locations in the USA into the Prairie region. Typically trajectories from the PNW are of most concern for central to western Prairie cereal growers, while trajectories from the Texas to Nebraska corridor are of most concern for central to eastern Prairie growers. Courtesy of AAFC Lacombe Technician, Sasha Chisholm, preliminary reverse trajectory maps for the PNW and Kansas/Nebraska regions from April 1-21, 2025, indicate this.
The PCDMN cereal rust forecasts appear on the inseason updates section of our website, where one can can also review past in-season updates for a range of crops and disease issues. The in-season updates provide a summary of the weekly rust forecasts, while the Cereal Rust Risk section provides the full weekly reports from current and past growing seasons.
As the 2025 growing season approaches, the PCDMN will be monitoring further rust risk forecasts from Dr. Chen as well as the status of rust development in source USA locations. Further updates will be provided with weekly cereal rust risk forecasts starting around midMay. Stay tuned and monitor our PCDMN website and X (Twitter) feed for further information.

Alberta Grains board chair Tara Sawyer will take a leave of absence from her role effective immediately following her appointment by Premier Danielle Smith as the United Conservative Party (UCP) candidate for the Olds–Didsbury–Three Hills by-election. As outlined in Alberta Grains’ governance procedures, vice-chair Scott Jespersen will assume the role of acting chair.
Sawyer, a wheat and barley farmer from Acme, Alberta, was elected as Alberta Grains’ inaugural chair in 2023 after the amalgamation of the Alberta Wheat Commission and Alberta Barley. Her leadership helped guide the organization through its formation and establish a strong foundation for research, policy and farmer engagement across the province.
“It has been an honour to represent Alberta’s wheat and barley farmers and help lead this organization during such a transformative time,” said Sawyer. “I’m proud of what our board has accomplished together and am confident in the strength of the leadership team taking the reins while I pursue this opportunity to continue serving Albertans in a new capacity.”
With Sawyer’s departure, vice-chair Scott Jespersen will assume the role of acting chair. Jespersen, a grain farmer from Spruce Grove, Alberta, serves as a Region 5 director with Alberta Grains and brings several years of experience on the board. During that time, he has played a key role in advancing Alberta Grains’ strategic priorities of innovative research, market development, policy advocacy, farm business management, agronomy and extension.
“Tara’s leadership has been crucial in not only shaping the vision and direction of Alberta Grains but also in my own personal development as an executive board member and regional director,” said Jespersen. “On behalf of the board, staff and grain farmers across the province, I want to thank her for her service and dedication. As we move forward, I’m committed to continuing
our work on behalf of Alberta’s wheat and barley farmers to grow a stronger, more sustainable grain industry.”
With Jespersen stepping into the role of acting chair, second vice-chair Devin Hartzler, a grain farmer from Carstairs, Alberta, and current Region 2 director, will become acting vice-chair. The vacant second vice-chair position will be filled following an election at the next Alberta Grains board meeting in July 2025.
These appointments reflect Alberta Grains’ continued commitment to strong, farmer-led leadership and a stable, transparent governance process. The board remains focused on delivering value for wheat and barley farmers across the province. NH

There are good reasons to consider bees and other pollinators when making pest control plans. The most important tool is good communication between canola growers and hive owners.
Talk to hive owners and use BeeConnected
Share your pest management plans with honey producers in the area. Armed with this information, beekeepers can then reduce exposure by moving or covering their hives during spray applications.
BeeConnected is a free app that helps farmers, pesticide applicators and beekeepers communicate through an internal messaging system. Register and learn more at beeconnected.ca.
Don’t spray when canola is in flower unless absolutely necessary
Wait until the field is no longer in bloom. If you must spray while canola is in flower, pay extra attention to the following precautions.
Avoid spraying during peak foraging times
Studies show that bees are most likely to feed on canola in the early morning hours, when secretion of nectar is highest (Nedic et al, 2013). Bee visits peak around 10 a.m., and drop off noticeably by late afternoon. By 7 p.m., the number of bees still foraging is only about a third of what it would be at the 10 a.m. peak.

aren’t generally grown in this area, like sorghum, millet, triticale, and feed corn. This crop demonstration site “will address the critical need for accessible, regionally relevant information that supports agricultural producers in making informed decisions about crop choices,” according to its project objectives.
Later, the PRFA plans on having local Indigenous partners sow some traditional medicines, while others look at plants for naturalizing disturbed or cleared ground, and possible cover crops for soil improvement. The Peace River valley needs real data to inform crop choices going forward, and this will be a great learning

Spray after 9 p.m.
By this time, most bees have finished feeding and returned to the hive.
Check weather conditions
Pay careful attention to wind speed and direction, particularly as it relates to bee yards or other flowering plants.
Give good instructions to commercial applicators
Tell the applicator exactly where hives are located.
IFYOUWOULDLIKETORECEIVE
Use economic thresholds and integrated pest management
By optimizing pesticide use and spraying only when it will increase profits, you can save input costs and reduce stress on bees. Choose the least toxic solution to control the pest problem.
Maintain dialogue with farms operating near bee yards
A gentle in-person reminder can go a long way toward raising awareness of hives typically placed in sheltered areas.
Inform growers of the risks of pesticide use to bees
For best management practices to protect pollinators, you can reference this material or provincial government extension data.
Use the BeeConnected app
BeeConnected is a free app that helps farmers, pesticide applicators and beekeepers communicate through an internal messaging system. Register and learn more at beeconnected.ca.
Consider covering or moving hives when pesticide applications are happening
This may prevent some losses, but can be challenging and can create risk of colony loss due to overheating and disturbance.
Report any acute bee kills
Beekeepers are encouraged to contact the Pest Management Regulatory Agency so the causes of acute bee kills can be addressed.
Hybrid seed production
Pollination is a must-have for quality hybrid seed production. One study showed that the presence of pollinators can increase the germination of resulting seeds from 83% to 96%. 1
Higher yields with better ripening
Pollination by bees can improve canola productivity and quality – in part
because bees transfer pollen more efficiently than self-pollination.
Several studies have shown that bees help to:
• Promote more uniform flowering and earlier podsetting, 2 3 which has the potential to reduce green seed counts
• Increase pods per plant, seeds per pod and seed weight 4 5 6
• Reduce the amount of time canola blooms by 17% 2
• Increase seed weight per plant by anywhere from 13% 7 to nearly 50% 5
Disease control
Biological control of insect and fungal pests has shown promise, but the technology requires an appropriate delivery mechanism. Honey bees may be a solution. Researchers are exploring the potential for honey bees to spread beneficial fungi for keeping insects like Lygus bugs at bay.
About the BeeConnected app
BeeConnected is a free app provided to the community by CropLife Canada. It uses an internal messaging system to open up lines of communication between registered farmers, pesticide applicators and beekeepers.
Contractors and farmers can input information on crop protection activities that may be of interest to a beekeeper, and beekeepers are able to notify nearby farmers of the location of their hives.

LMAC Facebook, May 15, 2025
Now that the smoke has cleared and the 2025 LMAC convention has come to a close, it is time to reflect. It was really nice to have three new auctioneers attending their first LMAC event. Leo LeBlanc from Alberta, Walker Murphy from Wapella, SK and Mark Wall from north of Dawson Creek B.C. Welcome to the LMAC family gentleman! Also a number of auctioneers that missed last year, glad to see you back behind the mic at LMAC.
This picture sums up part of why we do this job. This is Mark Wall and his family at LMAC 2025. What a great pair of boys, so well behaved with nice manners. Dressed like Dad, taking in the event.
We asked each auctioneer how old they were when they wanted to be an auctioneer. Many were influenced very young after making those trips to the local
auction market with dad or grandpa watching the auctioneer in amazement! Remember LMAC auctioneers there could be more than one young guy or girl that wants to be just like you when they grow up.
These two young men in this picture could be part of the future of livestock marketing industry’s future and it’s sustainability. Seeing a picture that this this makes all the hard work more worthwhile.
The LMAC convention is more than just an auction competition. It is a gathering of livestock marketing industry’s past, present and future industry leaders. It is about keeping the livestock marketing sectors strong and sustainable. Competitors gather to discuss the markets and the future of the industry and the marketing sector. This event draws a large crowd of decision makers from the marking sector and their support staff. The networking opportunities are endless.
On behalf of the LMAC board of directors (your appointed and elected representatives) thank you to those that attended our convention. Thank you to our many sponsors. Also a shoutout to the many volunteers that worked behind the scenes to produce a top notch convention. Also to HLS in Virden, the management and staff for hosting and reminding everyone that “ true price discovery” happens that the marketing centers.
We hope to see you all in Maple Creek Sask next year. NH
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, March 6, 2025
The life of a farmer is demanding and comes with different challenges and uncertainty.
This can have a direct impact on mental health and our producers deserve access to mental health support, along with resources and tools that are tailored to their needs.
Today, the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced the launch of the new $3-million Producer Mental Wellbeing Initiative (PMWI), delivered by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, in partnership with the Privy Council Office’s Impact Canada. This 3-year initiative aims to bring forward collaborative solutions that use creative, data-based approaches to help improve the wellbeing of producers; reduce the stigma around mental health in agriculture; raise awareness; and offer the support producers need, when they need it.
The PMWI is now open for application intake until June 3, 2025 at 2 pm EDT. For-profit organizations, notfor-profit organizations, and individuals registered to do business in Canada are encouraged to apply.
The initiative will use a 3-stage approach to move innovators through the process of proposing, developing, and implementing their solutions. At each stage, a jury, made up of subject matter experts, will recommend which innovative solutions move to the next stage and receive funding. Two grand prize winners will ultimately receive up to $500,000 each to scale their solutions, grow their impact and increase the potential to support the wellbeing of more producers across the country.
“Our producers do so much for us – often making personal sacrifices so they can deliver their topquality products. Their mental health should not be something they have to sacrifice. Through this new initiative, we’re giving Canadians an opportunity to
come up with new solutions for producer mental wellbeing that will help reduce stigma and improve access to tailored support.” - The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood
• Agriculture is a demanding career, with its own set of unique stressors and challenges. More than ever, producers in Canada are opening up about their experiences of stress, depression and anxiety, making mental health in agriculture a growing concern.
• Eligible applicants must be legal entities (such as a registered business, corporation or a not-forprofit organization) capable of entering into legally binding agreements in Canada.
• AAFC will convene an independent and voluntary jury composed of subject matter experts, including representatives of the private sector, stakeholder groups, and academia, to assist in the assessment of applications. The jury panel will be announced in Spring 2025.
• Underrepresented and marginalized groups in Canadian agriculture—including women, youth, persons with disabilities, racialized persons, visible minorities, 2SLGBTQI+ communities, and official language minority communities are encouraged to apply. NH

Rolling baskets are an essential part of your tillage equipment, playing the vital role in soil finish and field preparation. But how do you know when it is time to replace them? These stepby-step instructions, we will outline the key signs to watch for as well as provide some additional tips to
help you maintain the optimal performance of your rolling baskets.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Look for Movement in the Bars
begin to loosen, crack or break. If you notice any broken or loose welds, this is a clear sign that your rolling baskets need replacing.
Tips and Troubleshooting
• Regularly inspect your rolling baskets after heavy use to ensure they remain in good condition.

One of the most noticeable signs that your rolling baskets are reaching the end of their lifespan is if you can wiggle one of the bars in the middle of the basket. Over time, repeated contact with soil causes the metal bars to wear down, becoming thinner and eventually loosening.
2. Check for Metal Wear
The constant contact with soil and debris can cause the metal on your rolling baskets to wear down. If you notice that the bars are thinning, it may be time to replace them.
3. Inspect the Welds
When the bars become too thin, the welds that hold the basket bars onto the scalloped plates may
• If you’re experiencing uneven soil finishing or notice that your rolling baskets are no longer functioning as effectively as before, a thorough inspection may reveal thinning or broken parts.
• Safety First: Always use gloves and protective gear when handling or measuring blades.
Regularly inspecting your rolling baskets for signs of wear, such as wiggling bars or thinning metal, will help you determine when it is time to replace them. Keeping them in good condition ensures your tillage equipment will operate efficiently and delivers optimal seedbed preparation. NH

CANTERRA SEEDS, May 1st, 2025
CANTERRA SEEDS is pleased to announce the acquisition of Alliance Seed, a pedigreed seed business previously owned by Paterson Grain, a recognized leader with over 115 years of history in Canadian agriculture. This strategic acquisition supports CANTERRA SEEDS’s goal of expanding its footprint in the pedigreed seed market by bringing high-performing, proven varieties such as CDC Endure milling oats and AAC Leroy VB CWRS wheat to more farmers across Western Canada.
This move complements CANTERRA SEEDS’s existing investment in Limagrain Cereals Research Canada, a wheat breeding joint venture with Limagrain, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and long-term crop development. Through this acquisition, CANTERRA SEEDS will expand distribution across Western Canada and provide a broader platform for collaboration with an increasing number of high-quality seed growers.
“We’re excited to welcome Alliance Seed into the CANTERRA SEEDS family,” said Brent Derkatch, CEO of CANTERRA SEEDS. “Alliance Seed has built an impressive portfolio and a network supported by committed seed growers. With our experience, we’re confident we can build on this strong foundation, help the brand grow, and offer even more value to Canadian farmers.”
Alliance Seed will continue to operate as a standalone brand under CANTERRA SEEDS’s umbrella, with key staff transitioning to maintain continuity and customer relationships.
“Founding and growing Alliance Seed has been an incredible journey, and we’re proud of what the team has accomplished. As we looked for the right successor, it was important to find someone who aligned with Alliance Seed’s culture and commitment to personalized service — and we found that in CANTERRA SEEDS. This new chapter brings exciting opportunities for the Alliance Seed brand, and we look forward to continuing our support through our retail network,” said Shane Paterson, Director of Trading and Transportation for Paterson Grain and former President and Chairman of Alliance Seed.
The acquisition of Alliance Seed brings a thriving and respected business into CANTERRA SEEDS’s growing network as the company positions itself for future success in Canadian agriculture. NH

As Achievement Day nears, 4H Beaverlodge Beef Club members have been busy readying their steers and sharpening their skills through workshops. First off, Mini Achievement Day featured grooming, showmanship, and judging classes, thanks to Naomi Treiber, Olin Rosvold, and Keegan Scorgie for those presentations and your time. Each member’s steer was photographed and are inserted into a magazine showcasing their steers’ and kid’s progress.
At the VJV Beaverlodge Auction Barn, members experienced an auctioneer workshop, where Yancey Crosier from VJV taught them how livestock sales work. We even got to be auctioneers, selling cattle to fellow members with bidding cards - a fun and educational experience for all! A special thank you to Yancy Crosier for his time and expertise. Our club will also hold a raffle to win half of our donation steer at just $10 per ticket. Proceeds go to the new Beaverlodge Hospital and Angel Flight Alberta.
Join us for our Achievement Day Sale on May 26! A complimentary supper starts at 5:30 PM, followed by a chance to meet members and see their steers before the final sale at 7:00 PM. For details on other info or the cattle shows before that, contact Renee Miller at 780-832-8029. NH
