hanges are being made to AgriStability to make it more responsive for livestock producers. As part of these changes, feed inventory pricing for livestock producers will be adjusted starting in the 2026 program year. This permanent change ensures the correct feed valuation is captured for feed used on-farm.
Additional changes to allowable expenses are under discussion for the 2026 program year, including rented pasture to better reflect the cost of feeding livestock. With this change, if a producer rents pasture, AgriStability would consider the pasture rental cost an allowable expense.
These changes are key to making AgriStability more responsive for livestock producers, especially in dry conditions.
“During extended dry periods, livestock producers can face shrinking feed supplies and increased pressure on grazing land,” said Daniel Graham, manager AgriStability and Pricing with Agriculture Financial Services (AFSC). “That’s why these updates to AgriStability are designed to respond more quickly and effectively – providing support when producers need it most.”
A new option, the optional reference margin (ORM), was introduced in the 2025 program year. ORM allows participants to elect to have their historical average (reference margin) calculated based on the methodology they use to report farm income for income tax purposes, eliminating the need to report the farm’s historical accrual and inventory information.

Further, participants selecting the ORM are able to request a coverage notice, which provides an estimate of their support level for that program year. Participants can us the notice to gage if they might benefit from filing an application for that program year. This option is expected to be available for all participants for the 2026 program year.
AgriStability provides comprehensive protection when events have a direct and significant impact to the farm’s margin. It triggers when a farm’s margin for the program year is less than 70 per cent of its historical average. Losses experienced beyond the 70 per cent threshold are covered at $0.80 for every dollar of decline, up to a maximum of $3 million or 70 per cent of the overall margin decline, whichever is less.
WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE?
While AgriInsurance protects against a production loss from specified perils, AgriStability provides comprehensive protection when events have a direct and significant impact to the farm’s margin. It factors in any impact to the participant’s margin, whether from reduced income and inventory value or increased input costs.
A visual representation of what AgriStability covers versus other AFSC programs. AgriStability covers production/ yield loss, loss in inventory value, commodity price decrease, input costs increase.
AgriStability’s annual participation fees is low, totaling approximately 0.315 per cent of the participant’s average historical margin plus a $55 admin fee.
Consider making AgriStability part of your risk management plan. To learn more, please contact your preferred AFSC branch office, call the Client Care Centre at 1.877.899.2372, or chat with us through live chat on AFSC Connect and AFSC.ca. NH

CFIA, October 1, 2025
As ordered by the Supreme Court of Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) continues to have custody of the birds at the British Columbia ostrich farm. There is ongoing veterinary oversight.
Veterinary care being provided
CFIA veterinarians have assessed one compromised animal and treatment is being provided. At the request of one of the owners, CFIA veterinarians allowed him to visit the bird with them. Based on CFIA veterinarians’ assessment and information provided by the owners, the bird has a preexisting chronic condition affecting its left leg that was being treated by the owners for some time.
The farm owners have not provided the CFIA with information about their current veterinarian of record who may have previously examined the bird and provided treatment recommendations. If requested, the CFIA will authorize a licensed private veterinarian acting on behalf of the farm to examine the bird.
The CFIA has also identified another bird with a preexisting foot injury. This bird is active and
moving with the other birds and feeding well. No treatment is being administered as it is not currently required.
The other birds are continuing to be fed and watered with no signs of agitation or stress related to CFIA inspectors as care givers. As requested by the farm, the CFIA will continue to use feed from the farm’s regular supplier.
As the farm remains under CFIA control, individuals are reminded that subsection 35(1) of the Health of Animals Act which makes it an offence to obstruct or hinder an analyst, inspector or officer who is performing duties or functions under
this Act or the regulations. Any such actions may result in enforcement measures or prosecution.
The CFIA is aware of on-line campaigns encouraging supporters of the ostrich farm to deliberately tie up the Agency’s phone lines and resources by falsely requesting inspection services. Such disruptive actions are not only irresponsible, but they risk significantly hindering the CFIA’s ability to respond promptly to genuine calls. This interference could delay critical services that protect Canadians’ food safety, plant health and animal health.
Stamping out and eradication measures protect the national economy
Our disease response aims to protect both public and animal health, as well as minimize impacts on the $6.8 billion domestic poultry industry, and the Canadian economy. This supports Canadian families and poultry farmers whose livelihoods depend on maintaining international market access for $1.75 billion in exports.
Canada’s animal health status is an essential element of agricultural exports and the national economy. Our stamping out policy plays a critical role in animal disease control and preparedness. NH

With the support of a group of well capitalized investors, Peavey Mart will commence the relaunch in select prairie locations in the late fall of 2025 including Spruce Grove, Westlock, Camrose, and Lacombe.
The Peavey Mart stores are owned by 2707162 Alberta Ltd., an investment group who has capitalized the relaunch. Customers can expect to see many of their favourite brands back on store shelves including Harvest Goodness, Rolling Acres, Scotts, Dickies, Pitt Boss, Shell, and more. Peavey Mart stores will reflect the needs of customers by providing reliable and relevant products, shifting offerings to reflect a focus on high quality, unique, and locally sourced items that highlight the Canadian entrepreneurial spirit.
“We know that the closure of Peavey Mart stores left a
Kurt Schultz, Lead Merchant and a member the operations leadership team, echoed Anderson’s comments. “We’re bringing back the Peavey Mart that people know and love, a Peavey Mart focused on the needs of the farmer, rancher, acreage owner, homeowner and homesteader with a strong emphasis on providing value for dollars spent in our stores.”
The ownership group secured the rights to the Peavey Mart name and associated intellectual property from the defunct Peavey Industries LP in April of 2025 with the goal of opening 7-12 locations. The new company has secured 40,000 ft2 of distribution space in Red Deer County to support the ongoing operations and distribution requirements for the endeavour and has built a
gap for many customers,” said Doug Anderson. “Our investors and ownership group recognizes the importance of Peavey Mart in the Canadian retail landscape, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to relaunch the brand in these communities.”
With the historical success of many locations in prairie markets, the ownership group is confident in a successful relaunch of the initial four Peavey Mart stores. As the second tranche of investors are onboarded, the ownership group will target openings in other previously held markets, including Saskatchewan.
focused team within their Home Office to support the relaunch. Operations recruitment has also begun for positions within stores and the distribution warehouse. More information on available positions can be found at careers.peaveymart.com.
Anderson added a large component of the ownership group’s mandate is to create an agile culture where store, office and distribution teams work collaboratively, while ensuring that the company can pivot as necessary to support both customer needs’ and continued profitable operations for many years to come. Most cattle ranchers are very familiar with the disease “Blackleg”. Fortunately, most have never dealt with it and never will but we still see deadly cases of it every summer/fall in the Peace Country.
Blackleg is a highly fatal bacterial disease caused by Clostridium chauvoei. This pathogen produces spores that can remain dormant in soil for years, waiting for the right conditions to emerge (if you
have land, you have these spores in your soil) — often after excavation, plowing, water runoff or even feeding silage contaminated with soil. Once exposed, the spores infect cattle through ingestion or wounds, quietly spreading in the body before releasing lethal toxins.
The most common sign is no sign at all — just sudden death. If you are lucky enough to catch an early case, they will usually present has hind limb

lameness quickly progressing to going down and dying.
Although typically affecting calves between 6 to 12 months old, adult cattle that haven’t been vaccinated are also at risk.
while on summer pasture the logistics of rapid containment and treatment of these animals is what makes treatment the most challenging.
This is why prevention is critical — and cost-effective.
• Vaccine Cost: $0.80 to $2.00 per dose
• Full herd (100 head): Approx. $200 plus tax
The bacteria target the heart and skeletal muscles. As they multiply, they release toxins that destroy tissue and create gas under the skin. This can produce a tell-tale “bubble wrap” feel known as crepitus, along with blackened muscle tissue — hence the name Blackleg. However, not all cases are textbook. Sometimes, the only clue may be black lesions hidden inside the heart or diaphragm.
Sudden cattle deaths can also be caused by anthrax, water-borne toxins, plant poisoning, or toxic algae blooms. But Blackleg remains one of the most common causes, especially in pastured animals which is why we recommend a veterinary necropsy any time sudden death on pasture occurs. Warm weather speeds up body decomposition, so prompt post mortem is crucial for accurate diagnosis.
Blackleg is a wimpy bacteria and easily killed with penicillin but while the disease may be treatable in early stages, that’s a big if. Blackleg kills within 24 hours, often before any signs are seen. Because most of these cases occur
• Treatment after outbreak: ~$1,350 for antibiotics and emergency vaccinations (excluding value of lost animals - **which is very high this year**)
Vaccines are safe for pregnant cows and help pass maternal immunity to calves (a good thing to keep in mind if running cows through the chute this fall). Calves should be vaccinated at branding or pasture turnout to develop their own defenses.
Blackleg can be devastating — not just emotionally, but economically. Yet it is entirely preventable with an inexpensive, widely available vaccine. While unpredictable, outbreaks don’t need to become disasters. With a strong vaccination protocol in place, producers can protect their herds and rest easy knowing they’ve done all they can.

RAISEDRIGHTHEIFER SALE 12NoonSaturday |Dec13
Properly preparing your breeding bull for the breeding season is crucial to ensure high conception rates, a tight calving window, and overall herd productivity. Bulls contribute 50% of the genetic makeup of your next calf crop, so their health, fertility, and readiness are just as important as that of the cows. Preparation should begin at least 60 days before the start of the breeding season to allow time to identify and address any potential issues.
One of the first steps in getting your bull ready is scheduling a Breeding Soundness Examination by a qualified veterinarian. A BSE evaluates physical health, scrotal circumference, semen quality (motility and morphology), and reproductive anatomy. Even if a bull performed well the previous season, changes in health, injuries, or age can reduce fertility. A satisfactory BSE gives confidence that the bull is capable of settling cows.
2. BODY CONDITION SCORE
Ideally, bulls should enter the breeding season with a body condition score of 5.5 to 6.5 (on a 1-9 scale). Bulls in poor condition may lack stamina and have reduced fertility, while overly fat bulls can suffer from heat stress and decreased libido. Evaluate BCS and adjust nutrition accordingly. High-energy rations or access to quality forage may be needed for thin bulls. Minerals - especially those supporting reproductive health like zinc, selenium, and vitamin E - must be provided in adequate amounts.
Ensure your bull is up to date on all vaccinations, including those for reproductive diseases like BVD, IBR, Leptospirosis, and Vibriosis. Consult your veterinarian about timing and boosters. A parasite control program (internal and external) should also be maintained to ensure overall health and reduce stressors that can affect fertility.
4. HOOF AND STRUCTURAL SOUNDNESS
Bulls must be physically sound to travel long distances and mount cows effectively. Inspect feet and legs for lameness, injuries, or overgrown hooves. Corrective trimming or treatment should be done well in advance of turnout to avoid soreness
or infection. Bulls that are not structurally sound will underperform and may injure themselves or cows during service.
5. SOCIALIZATION AND BULL-TO-COW RATIO
If multiple bulls will be used, it’s wise to allow them to establish a social hierarchy before breeding season. Introducing bulls in a neutral pasture prior to turnout can reduce fighting and stress during breeding. Also, ensure your bull-to-cow ratio is appropriate—typically 1 bull per 25 cows for yearling bulls and up to 1 per 30-40 cows for mature, proven bulls.
6. OBSERVE AND MONITOR
Even after turnout, your job isn’t done. Monitor the bull’s behavior to ensure he is actively breeding and not showing signs of lameness or illness. Use heat detection aids or observe cows for repeated heats, which may indicate a fertility problem in the bull.
In conclusion, preparing your breeding bull for the season involves more than just turning him out with the herd. Proper health checks, nutrition, and management will ensure he performs well and helps produce a strong, uniform calf crop. Investing time and attention in bull preparation pays off in pregnancy rates and long-term herd genetics. NH

Grant Gaschnitz was a prominent figure in the Peace Region with a lasting impact on the agricultural community. He was a strong advocate for strengthening Peace Country farms and ranches, ensuring the region received the attention it deserved. One of his greatest passions was encouraging and supporting young people in becoming successful and thriving farmers and ranchers.
To honour his legacy, the Grant Gaschnitz Memorial Ag Knowledge Sponsorship was created by the Gaschnitz family and is administered by the Peace Country Beef & Forage Association an organization Grant deeply supported. He was a long-time member, served on the board of directors, and was awarded a lifetime membership. The sponsorship reflects Grant’s long standing commitment to young producers and supports Peace Region farmers or ranchers between the ages of 17 and 40 as they pursue education or training that will help them succeed in their operations and grow their management skills.
This year’s recipient, Emma Heringer of Teepee Creek, Alberta, is a dedicated young cattle producer with six years of experience working alongside her father. She is currently enrolled in the Animal Science Technology diploma program at Lakeland College, where she’s building on her hands-on experience with formal training in sustainable ranching. With the support of the Gaschnitz family and this $500 sponsorship, she aims to enhance her skills in sustainable livestock management and contribute to the continued success of agriculture in the Peace Region.
We want to wish a huge congratulations to Emma and we wish you great success on your future studies. NH

Moisture and temperature are the two biggest factors in grain spoilage. Making sure the grain that goes into the bin has been dried to an optimum moisture level and
checking the bins frequently to monitor temperature and identify any issues early will reduce the chances of spoilage. When it comes time to store cereals, one of the best things a grower can do

last year’s stored grain, grain handling equipment, and/or residues remaining in the bin. OTA can develop in small pockets of wet grain, or when water comes in contact with grain – even in bins that are generally well managed and properly aerated.
Cooling the grain as quickly as possible and keeping it cool can help reduce the production of condensation in storage.
No matter the crop that’s in the bin, Keep it Clean recommends checking them frequently and following these best management practices for safe storage:
• Keep bins and grain handling equipment clean.
• Thoroughly clean dust and debris between grain lots.
• Ensure crops are harvested or dried to a safe level for storage.
for their grain is to ensure that it’s dry and kept cool – well below 10°C.
Ochratoxin A (OTA), is a potent, naturally occurring mycotoxin that can form on stored cereal grains in high moisture conditions. OTA is produced by Penicillium verrucosum a naturally occurring soil fungus; but, unlike deoxynivalenol (also known as DON or vomitoxin) which is formed by fusarium infections in the field, OTA forms exclusively in storage.
OTA can be a risk to market access as countries can have different maximum allowable limits of OTA in grain. Make sure to monitor this regularly throughout the storage season, and to remove a minimum of one-third of bins if there’s a detectable temperature rise. Not doing so risks the development of OTA.
Preventing even the smallest pockets of OTA-contaminated cereals during storage is the only way to manage OTA and help reduce the risk of toxins being produced and avoiding product recall. OTA is not destroyed with heat or processing, so it can persist in grain/grain products. By taking steps to prevent the formation of OTA in stored grain, farmers can protect their investments and help keep markets open for all.
The most common cause of OTA is from contaminated soil particles,
• Do not blend tough/damp grain with dry grain on-farm –it’s too risky.
• Cool the grain quickly to well below 10°C to achieve uniform, cold temperatures throughout the bulk, ideally well below zero.
• Monitor bins regularly. Move at least one-third of the grain out of the bin with any detectable temperature rise.
• Condition grain as soon as possible in the spring, as soon as ambient temperatures allow for drying.
By keeping an eye on your bins and taking these steps to maintain the quality of your stored cereals grains you can protect both its marketability and your investment.
See further information on OTA and how it forms, along with visual examples of OTA formation at critical points of handling and storage.
Prevention of even small pockets of OTA-contaminated grain during storage is the only way that it can be managed to protect health and prevent product recalls. Managing storage is one of our 5 Tips to keep your crops ready for market. By properly storing your cereals, you can protect your investment and help keep markets open for all. NH
