Feed me, give me water, and care for me, and when the day’s work is done, give me shelter, a clean bed and a wide stall. Talk to me. Your voice often substitutes for the reins for me. Be good to me and I will serve you cheerfully and love you. Don’t jerk the reins and don’t raise the whip. Don’t beat or kick me when I don’t understand you, but rather give me time to understand you. Don’t consider it disobedience if I don’t follow your commands. Perhaps there is a problem with my saddle and bridle or hooves.

Check my teeth if I don’t eat, maybe I have a toothache. You know how that hurts. Don’t halter me too short and don’t dock my tail… it’s my only weapon against flies and mosquitoes. And at the end, dear master, when I am no longer any use to you, don’t let me go hungry or freeze and don’t sell me. Don’t give me a master who slowly tortures me to death and lets me starve, but rather be merciful and take care of me, by letting me run and enjoy a warm pasture. Let me request this of you and please don’t regard it as disrespectful if I ask it in the name of Him who was born in a stable like me. Amen (author unknown) NH

Warburtons Contributes $650,000 To Gate Project Winnipeg, Manitoba, June 5, 2025
T
he Global Agriculture Technology Exchange (Gate) Capital Campaign today announced that it has received $650,000 in funding from Warburtons, the largest bakery brand in the United Kingdom. “This contribution represents a close, long-standing relationship between Cereals Canada and Warburtons,” said JoAnne Buth, Gate Capital Campaign Chair. “We are thrilled to make this announcement alongside Warburtons, and we are grateful for their support.” Located in downtown Winnipeg, Gate will provide the tools necessary to allow Cereals Canada to maintain the globally recognized, best-in-class expertise needed to support today’s global markets, providing customers like Warburtons with value-added technical knowledge and expertise, and maintaining Canada’s leadership as a trusted and innovative supplier of high-quality wheat. “Cereals Canada and Warburtons share a deep commitment to quality and innovation,” said Buth. “Warburtons sources significant volumes of Canadian wheat from Western Canada and has been working with Canadian farmers and the Cereals Canada team for many years.” The Cereals Canada facility has long been a “home away from home” for the Warburtons team who utilize the pilot bakery, mill, and analytical lab to test and analyze Canadian wheat before it goes to the UK for
Tomorrow is what BC has to offer. Tomorrow is on.™ When we think of energy, it’s easy to remember the technical terms like kilowatts and efficiency. But what does it really mean to us, as people? It’s warming up the house when it’s chilly. It’s sterilizing medical tools for our doctors and nurses. It’s firing up the BBQ to enjoy some delicious salmon. Enbridge is proud to be at the heart of what makes beautiful BC thrive—supporting the things you love and driving key industries like healthcare, manufacturing, construction and more. production. In 2016, Warburtons partnered with Cereals Canada for a multi-year pulse research project to produce healthier baked goods, demonstrating a further commitment to diversification and innovation. “Warburtons has proudly partnered with Canadian farmers and the agriculture industry for over 30 years to source the highest quality wheat through our Identity Preserved Program,” said Adam Dyck, Warburtons Canadian Program Manager. “For the past 15 years, Cereals Canada has played a vital role in supporting our commitment to quality and innovation. Our contribution to the Gate project reflects the value we place on Canadian agriculture and our strong belief in innovation, collaboration, and long-term relationships. This facility will help ensure that Cereals Canada remains a global leader, and we’re honoured to support that vision.” To date, the Gate Capital Campaign has raised $32,150,000 towards its goal of approximately $100 million. The campaign is targeting contributions from industry groups, agribusinesses and individuals, and support from the three levels of government. To learn more, please visit: Gate Capital Campaign. NH

Grain & fertilizer hauling throughout AB, SK, MB & BC
There are many ways to protect stored forage over winter. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, but the result is a higher retention in quality and a reduction in dry matter losses. Dry hay under plastic can be protected from the weather by wrapping as individual bales, in long rows (either wrapped or in a tube), or stacked and then covered. If the plastic remains intact, the forage can be stored for several years. Some of the constraints are the cost of plastic, either owning or renting equipment, manpower, and preventing damage by birds and animals. An uncovered 1,400-pound bale can shrink up to 18% or 250 pounds over the first winter. Quality loss and voluntary feed intake is also reduced. There are two common types of round bale silage. Silage with 45 to 55 % moisture goes through the complete fermentation process that makes the product stable. It can be stored for several years if the plastic is not damaged. Bales made at low moisture, 20 to 35% moisture does not go through complete fermentation. This product will prevent mold formation, and it stores well the first winter. It should be fed out prior to spring. The silage may spoil if kept over the following summer. Preventing air from entering silage bales is critical to have proper fermentation needed to make high quality silage. It is recommended to have a 6 millimeter thickness plastic to prevent oxygen from getting into the bales, pit, or pile. If wrapping bales, and the

plastic thickness is only 1.5 millimeters, then 4 layers are needed. The ends of the row need to be capped off and sealed so that no air enters. Storing hay under a shed is a good option. The biggest constraint is to match building size to the amount of stored forage needed to feed the herd for the winter. Cost of construction is a concern, but the building should last a long time. There are many things to consider when storing forage over the winter, but the objective of preventing quality and dry matter losses is common for all systems. For additional information on storage options for forage and quality, contact Barry at 403-741-6032 or bjyaremcio@gmail.com NH

B Farm is located in West Bolton, in the Brome-Missisquoi region. It specializes in beekeeping, feeder cattle and hay farming. Syed Mohamed and Nancy Lanteigne are the owners. They are committed to protecting the environment and practicing regenerative agriculture. The farm covers an area of 140 hectares, of which 60 hectares are meadows and the rest is forest. She has a herd of 30 Highland cows and operates 40 beehives for honey production. The farm is certified organic.

A WINDBREAK HEDGE FOR THE WELL-BEING OF ANIMALS AND BIODIVERSITY Highland cattle are easy to raise, according to Nancy Lanteigne. They are docile, rarely sick and require little maintenance. Their thick fleece allows them to withstand cold and humidity well in winter, but it makes them vulnerable to heat in summer. Some fields are not suitable for pasture in the summer because they do not provide enough shade for the animals’ comfort. To remedy this situation, they have created windbreaks to create shaded areas in the pastures,
explains Syed Mohamed. These hedges were planted in the autumn of 2024. When they are adults, they will provide a better environment for farm animals. In addition, these hedgerows promote pollinators, such as bees, and create new habitats for wildlife. Syed Mohamed received technical and financial assistance from ALUS Montérégie for his windbreak project.
DELAYED MOWING TO PRESERVE THE BOBOLINK WB Farm participates in the ALUS Delayed Hay Mowing Program. This program consists of postponing the cutting of an area of one hectare of hay until July 15. The aim is to protect the birds that nest in this environment, including the bobolink and the eastern meadowlark. Both species are endangered in Canada. Delaying mowing gives the chicks more time to leave their nests before farm equipment arrives. And it works! When Syed Mohamed and I walked through the one-hectare plot on June 26, we heard several bobolinks singing happily. For Syed Mohamed, the sound was reminiscent of the R2D2 robot in the Star Wars films. The ALUS team had previously identified the area to be protected and mowed down only after July 15. The WB farm is receiving financial assistance from ALUS Montérégie to compensate for losses incurred due to the delay in mowing.
WHO ARE ALUS CANADA AND ALUS MONTÉRÉGIE? ALUS Canada is a charitable, not-for-profit organization dedicated to encouraging sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. It provides technical support and money to farmers to develop their own land to increase climate resilience and biodiversity. The projects are funded through partnerships with
governments and private companies. They benefit producers, but also all citizens, who see the quality of their living environment improve. ALUS projects include windbreaks, expanded riparian buffers, pollinator and wildlife corridors, forested patches, and delayed hay mowing to protect species at risk. ALUS Canada is an organization of 39 communities across the country. One of these communities is ALUS Montérégie, which has 196 participating farms. Thanks to this program, more than 30,000 trees, 45,000 shrubs and 39,000 hectares of flower strips for pollinators have been planted in Montérégie. A total of $710,000 has been invested in the region, according to Justine Giroux, agri-environmental advisor for ALUS Montérégie projects. To learn more about ALUS Canada, farmers can visit the organization’s website. To join ALUS Montérégie’s projects, https://montergie.upa.qc.ca/producteur/agroevvironnement/ alus-monteregie NH
The tree species have been carefully selected. In the photo on the left, an American lime tree, and on the right, a tamarack. Other species, such as hybrid poplar, white pine, and red maple, have also been planted. Photos: Yvon Thérien

Preventing Wildfires on the Farm By incorporating a few simple preventative actions, farmers can play an important role in minimizing the risk of wildfires Agri-News, May 20, 2025
O
ver the past 5 years, Alberta has seen close to 50 wildfires annually resulting from agricultural activity. Almost all of these are preventable. By incorporating a few simple preventative actions into their daily routine, farmers can play an important role in minimizing the risk of wildfires.
FARM EQUIPMENT Fires started by agricultural equipment are not uncommon. Getting into the habit of doing a quick check of the equipment for fire hazards including debris and buildup on the engine, exhaust system, belts and chains can greatly reduce the risk of causing a new wildfire. When operating equipment, it is also important to pay attention to the surroundings. A spark created by equipment hitting a rock can be all it takes for dry materials to start smoldering and start a wildfire in fields, ditches and along roadways. If a fire does occur, having a fire extinguisher and a shovel handy will improve the chances of slowing or stopping a fire before it can into a major wildfire.
AROUND THE FARM Here are some steps you can take to lower the risk of wildfire on your property. Check for fire hazards before starting work each day, such as: • any buildup of crop residue around the engine, exhaust system, belts and chains • damaged exhaust components
• worn or frayed belts • signs of leaking fluids, oils and fuels Combines and balers can present different types of problems. You may want to check for: • buildup of combustible crop residue around the engine and exhaust system • concealed drive belts and pulleys that can contribute to the accumulation of crop residue that can overheat due to friction Regular maintenance is the key to preventing wildfires caused by agricultural equipment. Remember to: • keep bearings and gears well lubricated to prevent buildup • remove crop residue from areas prone to generate normal heat • replace worn and broken belts as soon as possible • keep lubricants at proper levels • repair or replace damaged or worn-out exhaust systems – in addition to a good exhaust system, a spark arrester can be installed to catch burning particles • repair damaged electrical wiring Vehicle safety is also something to keep in mind come harvest season. • Manifolds and exhausts can easily reach temperatures 250°C or higher, which can ignite dry grass within minutes.
• Vehicles with low ground clearance are especially prone to causing wildfires, especially in areas with tall vegetation.
BURN BARRELS Burn barrels can easily cause a wildfire. It is important to ensure barrels have a metal screen cover with a 6 mm (1/4 inch) mesh to catch sparks. Drilling holes in the sides will help with ventilation. All debris and grass should be cleared to a 3 m (10 foot) radius and be in a sheltered location close to a water source. Scrape down to mineral soil before setting the barrel in place. Once that has been done, surround the area with crushed rock, gravel or sand to catch any embers. Permits are required for burn barrels during wildfire season. Avoid burning if the wind is stronger that 12 km/h (8 mph) and try and limit burning during the heat of the day. When burning it is important to stay focused while the burn barrel is active as smaller sparks can escape and ignite grass or other materials. Never leave the fire unattended. Following these steps will help to ensure that your family and your farm remain safe from the threat of wildfire. For more information on steps you can take to reduce your risk of wildfire, visit FireSmartAlberta. Don’t Be A Pest With Ella Wilson, pest student at the Peace River Forage Seed Association
DIAMONDBACK MOTHS AND BERTHA ARMYWORM Diamondback moths (DBM) are a recurring species in the Peace Region that blow in each spring from southern parts of North America. However, the moths begin reproducing once they arrive in the Peace Region if host plants are available.
YOU ARE INVITED TO ATTEND
The moths that migrate to the Peace Region and reproduce begin by laying small yellow eggs, which will hatch into small green larva. It is at the larva stage that the diamondback moths do the most damage to canola crops. The larva can cause damage by eating small holes through the leaves. The process from egg to adult only takes about 32 days, which can sometimes lead to 3-4 generations per growing season. To determine diamondback moth populations in canola crops, pheromone traps and sweep nets are used for collection. Adults are easy to identify, as they have a noticeable white diamond-like marking on their back. Control of these pests may be required if populations reach 10-15 per square foot before plants have flowered, or 20-30 per square foot after flowering. midge eats the heads of the plant. If populations are above the threshold, producers may choose to spray the field. Spraying is most effective if done at night when the midge are most active. Bertha armyworm (BAW) traps are typically set up in canola crops later on in the growing season. BAW pupae depend highly on warmer degree-days development before they can develop into adults. BAWs require degree-days with a base 7 °C before they can begin reaching adult stages. Therefore, they often don’t begin reaching the adult stage until June. In 2025, there were still no recorded adults emerging as of May 25 due to inadequate temperatures. Bertha armyworms begin from small white eggs that hatch into pale yellow/green larva. The larval stage is the most potentially damaging life stage of BAW. The larva then progress to the pupae stage, and remain this way over winter and until temperatures are warm enough the next summer. The pupae are usually a distinct dark brown/red colour. Once adults do begin emerging in June, pheromone traps
are set up in canola fields to give producers an idea of BAW populations in their fields. Bertha armyworms are much larger than diamondback moths, and have unique patterns and markings on their wings. BAW populations may be a concern if the larva reaches 0.5 inches in length. NH

Keep it clean on pre-harvest chemical use Farmers urged to toe the line on pre-harvest pesticide application and market product restrictions to avoid grain marketing headaches Miranda Leybourne, Glacier FarmMedia
A
s harvest approaches, Keep It Clean is reminding producers to take steps to make sure they’re not caught on the wrong side of maximum residue limits. International regulations are a complex web for Canadian producers, speakers on a late-July Keep It Clean webinar warned. “When you think about the different crops that are represented, our major field crops, canola, our cereals and our pulses, a large proportion of those are exported,” noted Krista Zuzak, director of crop protection and production for Cereals Canada. WHY IT MATTERS: Failing to follow the pesticide label or pre-harvest application windows sets farmers up for marketing issues and also risks Canada’s international trade reputation. This export dependency means farmers must consider regulations beyond Canada’s borders, Zuzak added. “Countries do have the right to set their standards and their rules that are around human and plant animal or environmental health,” she said. Glufosinate-ammonium is a prime example, said Jeff English, vice-president of marketing and communications at Pulse Canada. While glufosinate-ammonium has generic registration for lentils in Western Canada, it shouldn’t be used due to misaligned and unset maximum residue limits, he warned.

“We always recommend talking to your grain buyer before application, just to confirm as a fail safe.” Jeff English, Pulse Canada. “While there are a lot of advancements in research happening around this technology, spray drones cannot yet be used to apply pesticides on field crops in Canada,” she said. “Currently, there aren’t any agriculture field crop chemicals or pesticides that have labels right now that authorize spray drone use.” Applying via drone, besides being illegal, is thus also considered an off-label use and could pose a market risk. Daily decisions carry global consequences The complexity translates into detailed operational requirements for farmers. Curtis Rempel, vice-president of crop production and innovation at the Canola Council of Canada, said that careful precision is required for glyphosate applications on canola. “For canola staging, because of the indeterminate nature of the crop, it can be a little tricky, but we have enough research, and I think, enough visual guidelines now to really indicate that 30 per cent moisture is 50 to 60 per cent seed color change,” he said.
Farmers must also consider disease management for trade purposes. Market-driven precaution So far, the industry has adopted a precautionary approach where even legal products may be restricted based on market concerns rather than safety issues. “We have our product advisory … which is annually updated, as well as our pre-harvest glyphosate staging guides and our pre harvest interval calculator,” Zuzak said. The importance of farmer-buyer communication can’t be overstated, English said. “We always recommend talking to your grain buyer before application, just to confirm as a fail safe.” NH
Canadian producers must navigate conflicting global pesticide and residue rules that can clash with domestic approvals, risking market access and requiring careful management and industry support, according to industry experts. Photo: Greg Berg

Even glyphosate, widely used for pre-harvest weed control, carries market risks. “We do have MRLs established in all major markets,” English said. However, the product is still flagged for caution because market acceptance varies based on end users. Technology innovation meets trade reality The disconnect between domestic approvals and international acceptance extends to new technologies. Zuzak pointed to spray drones as an example of innovation constrained by market considerations.

Small Farms Faced Challenges Keeping Up in Today’s More Digital World
TEEPEE CREEK STAMPEDE
S
mall farms face numerous challenges in keeping up with digital advancements, despite the growing integration of technology in agriculture. These obstacles often stem from financial, technical, and infrastructural limitations that disproportionately affect small-scale operations compared to large commercial farms. One of the primary challenges is limited access to capital. Advanced technologies such as precision agriculture tools, drones, automated machinery, and data management software require significant upfront investment. Small farms, which often operate on narrow profit margins, may lack the financial resources to adopt these tools or upgrade outdated equipment. Even when grants or subsidies are available, navigating the application processes can be burdensome. Another major barrier is the lack of digital literacy and technical support. Many small-scale farmers may not have the training or time to learn how to implement and manage complex digital systems. Without access to education or extension services tailored to their needs, these farmers are at risk of falling behind as digital innovations continue to evolve. Infrastructure deficits, particularly in rural areas, further hinder digital adoption. Reliable internet access remains a significant issue in many farming communities. Poor connectivity limits access to cloudbased services, real-time data analytics, and online markets, placing small farms at a disadvantage in an increasingly data-driven agricultural landscape. Moreover, technology is often developed with large farms in mind, making it less adaptable or affordable for small-scale use. Solutions that work well for industrial farms may not suit the smaller land area or diverse operations typical of family-run farms. This lack of customization creates a mismatch between

available technologies and the actual needs of small farmers. Finally, there is a concern about data ownership and privacy. As more agricultural tools collect data from farm operations, small farmers may be wary of who owns this data and how it’s used—especially if they lack bargaining power when dealing with technology providers. To bridge this digital divide, small farms need more inclusive, affordable, and accessible technology solutions, along with targeted training and policy support that considers their unique challenges. Do farmers know who owns their tractor’s data? A lawyer says it’s possible for producers to own the data they produce while companies can still retain the right to use it Jeff Melchior, Glacier FarmMedia Contributor Provision 4.3, meanwhile, tells the farmer, “you grant us a non-exclusive license to access, to use, reproduce, display, modify and prepare derivative works based on your customer farm data.” “So when you hit consent, you gave Bayer the ability to use all your on-farm data,” said Oemichen. This doesn’t mean Bayer is singling out a single farmer’s data or failing to anonymize it, Oemichen added, but he argued that it leaves room for the company to aggregate the data, use it for machine learning and combine it with other data sources, including its predictive analytics program, which has substantial value for a number of parties, including hedge funds. Antoine Bernet, country division head with Bayer Crop Science Canada, said the company is not in the data selling business. “We have not/will not enter into data-selling business models which involve the sale of a farmer’s individual farm data, including personal data, and we do not use a farmer’s individual farm data or aggregated data sets to speculate in the commodity market, other than managing normal business risks associated with our own seed/commodity production operations,” he said in an email. I
t’s not always easy to tease out who owns the data streaming out of a tractor cab’s GPS or other agricultural technology farm platforms, a legal expert says. If farmers are concerned about that lack of clear ownership, they’re not necessarily wrong, said Bill Oemichen, a lawyer from Minnesota, a member of the Law Society of Alberta and a research fellow with the Canadian Centre for the Study of Co-operatives at the University of Saskatchewan. Data ownership is among the thorny questions agri-
culture is wrestling with as the industry digs deeper digital roots, along with topics such as cybersecurity, right to repair and ongoing rural connectivity struggles. Oemichen, using Bayer Crop Science’s Climate FieldView platform as an example, asked farmers in the room if they read their contracts all the way through before indicating their consent. Few raised their hands. That’s not unusual, he told the Promoting Digitalization in Crop and Beef Production conference, which was held earlier this year in Edmonton and hosted by the Simpson Centre for Food and Agricultural Policy.. “No one’s reading these agreements. They’re long agreements. They’re written by attorneys (and) only attorneys, in my view, really can understand these agreements.” He’s not picking on that company in particular, he told the audience. The issue is broader than one provider. Oemichen highlighted provisions from Bayer’s ownership of farm data agreement for Climate FieldView. Provision 4.1 tells producers “you own all customer farm data,” but the following provision says Bayer owns any works that they generate, muddying the waters.
The Northern Horizon, August 15, 2025 37 “But not too many farmers and ranchers are going to want to spend the money going to an attorney to find out how to copyright this material.” Oemichen urged farmers to take the time and read their agreements, no matter how difficult. They should tell the producer how the company defines agricultural data, what’s being captured by the platform, how the data is going to be used and what data the farmer gets to keep. “And if you ever decide to leave that ag input provider, do you get to take your data with you, and do they then delete the data on their end?” he said. The law doesn’t define agricultural data agreements, he added. “The law is usually way behind industry.” Producers may not be able to do much to directly change the data-sharing landscape, but getting agricultural technology companies in line with producer wishes may be the next best thing, said Oemichen. He also pointed to ADT in a positive light. “This is a voluntary certification process where they commit to … going through all these areas, including disclosure, how they retain data, when they might make data available to you, how you can terminate the contract,” he said. “They put all this in so it gives you and those companies that are Ag Data Transparent certified some level of comfort that the contract wasn’t a contract of adhesion, which is a contract written totally against you, and so this tries to level the playing field to a degree.” NH

Bernet also disputed Oemichen’s interpretation of Bayer’s farm data agreement, saying the company “strive(s) for the highest data privacy standards in the industry.” “This includes our FieldView platform, and we provide a clear data privacy policy for transparency into the type of information we collect, how we handle and use that information and how customers control access to their customer farm data,” wrote Bernet, pointing out the Ag Data Transparent (ADT) certification that FieldView received in 2021. ADT is a U.S.-based non-profit that audits companies’ agricultural data contracts. It also documents how technology providers follow a set of core principles when collecting, using, storing and transferring farmers’ data. He outlined several principles he said the company adheres to regarding agricultural data. “Farmers own the data they share with us. We do not sell their personal or individual farm data, and farmers have the right to ask us to delete their farm data at any time. “We know our customers care about how their data is protected, stored and used. Bayer is committed to the fair and responsible use of data for all participants, especially farmers, so we can develop better products and services, help growers unlock more yield, and establish more useful digital farming technologies.” Intellectual property law won’t help farmers much when it comes to digital services, Oemichen said. He cited copyright law as an example, telling the audience that farm data is not subject to copyright law in either Canada or the United States. “The only time you can actually copyright is where you manipulate it. You create the algorithm or do some type of statistical analysis; then you have the possibility to copyright it.

inister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson issued the following statement on the 75th anniversary of Alberta’s Rat Control Program: “Rats are a worldwide menace that destroy property and spread disease. For three quarters of a century, Alberta has proudly been one of the few jurisdictions on Earth to live without the pest. We owe that reputation to our Rat Control Program, established in 1950. “We have a zero-tolerance policy for rats. If we spot an infestation, we quickly eradicate it. As a result, we’ve prevented millions of dollars in damages to farms and homes and ensured deadly diseases stay out of our province. “Our success is a direct result of the proactive measures and hard work from agricultural fieldmen, pest control officers, municipalities in the Rat Control Zone, provincial staff and so many more. “Albertans have kept our province rat-free through several decades of vigilance. You can help rat on rats through 310-FARM or rats@gov.ab.ca. “We are so proud to celebrate this success as we mark 75 years rat-free!” NH
