RCMP Files from July 1 - 7 Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser July 1 00:12 – complaint of someone “shooting” in Vegreville. Patrols were made but nothing was found and no other complaints were received. It was determined that the noise was most likely fireworks from an early Canada Day celebration.

10:50 – Members were dispatched to a female laying face down in a ditch. The subject of the call was located and spoke to members indicating that she was hung over. The subject declined EMS, the members provided water and called a parent who they met with to hand over the 20-year-old subject.

12:24 – Complaint received regarding a complaint about an assault in Vegreville. Members attended and were told a male had assaulted a female and 2 males. After further investigation members arrested the subject of the complaint who was charged with 2 counts of assault and released with conditions.

July 2 00:04 – Traffic stop conducted. The driver failed to provide proof of insurance and was provided a voluntary penalty of $233.

01:18 – Traffic stop conducted due to speeding. The vehicle was detected going 139 kmph in a 110 kmph zone.

Members observed the driver showing indications of alcohol consumption and roadside samples were taken. 2 samples both resulted in caution readings. The driver’s license was suspended for 72 hours and the vehicle was towed. A ticket for speeding was issued - $233.00.

08:05 – Report of mischief and trespass in Minburn overnight. A commercial property was entered through a locked gate. It did not appear that any

property was taken or further damage.

Under investigation.

09:21 – Report of mischief to a commercial building in Vegreville. Paint was splashed on the building and a rock was thrown through a window. Under investigation.

09:42 – Call to report a drunk driver.

Members located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was arrested for impaired driving. Breath samples provided showed intoxication levels at almost 4X the legal limit. The subject was released for court and her license was suspended. A court appearance is pending on charges of impaired driving.

12:32 – Client attended the detachment to request disposal of ammunition found in a relative’s home. *** The RCMP would request that clients NOT bring a firearm or anything they suspect to be an explosive into the detachment. Such items should start with a phone call.

13:41 – Report of the theft of a generator and cordless power tools from a shop on a rural property while the

owner was away. Under investigation.

13:57 – Report of shoplifting at a Vegreville business. Under investigation.

17:22 – Report of an attempted break and enter to a business in Vegreville. A door lock and window were broken, however, entry was not gained.

Surveillance being reviewed & Investigation is ongoing.

July 3

04:44 – Members dispatched to a commercial alarm in Vegreville. Upon arrival members found the gate smashed and located a suspect still on scene. The suspect was arrested and charged.

08:35 – Report of a break and enter and theft of a UTV from a Vegreville business. At 17:09 a call was received about the stolen property and the unit was later recovered. The investigation revealed that the subject was the same individual charged with the break and enter at 04:44. The 50-year-old male was also charged with this theft as well as possession of crystal meth. The subject was released with a no cash bail of $1000 by the Justice of the Peace with documents for court.

12:05 – Report of a strange vehicle parked near the complainant’s home.

The complainant indicated that it may be their neighbours but seemed suspicious. *** How about talking to your neighbour?

21:20 – While on patrol, a member conducted a traffic stop due to cell phone use. The driver was charged with use of a cell phone and provided a voluntary penalty of $287.

July 4

16:16 – Traffic enforcement during the afternoon and evening resulting in 7 tickets issued.

23:35 – Traffic stop conducted when the member observed a vehicle failing to maintain their lane. The driver was driving while suspended and also was found to have 3 outstanding warrants.

He was arrested then later released by the Justice of the Peace on a $500 no cash bail with documents for court.

July 5

15:50 – Report of fraud. The complainant’s credit card had been used at a Vegreville bank to withdraw a significant amount of money. Surveillance was provided from multiple locations and suspects have been identified.

July 6

08:57 – Members were dispatched to an address that did not exist. The report was of children playing on a

Introducing People’s Party of Canada Candidate for Lakeland Riding Alain Houle Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser As Maxime Bernier’s People’s Party of Canada stirs the federal elections pot in the east, a local candidate has been announced in the MP running for the Lakeland riding.

Alain Houle, Ontario-born long-time Vegreville resident, says that he joined the party because of his concerns regarding Andrew Scheer but didn’t think mere membership would elicit the kind of change he hoped for.

“I signed up for a PPC membership in March because all of their values lined up with mine but felt compelled that I needed to do more,” says Houle, “It is important to me to bring awareness to the issues at hand and to make sure that the people of this riding have another choice on the ballot come October.”

Like many PPC candidates, Houle explained that his allegiance with the party stems from core conservative values, and a discontent with the way that the current powers that be have handled federal management.

“For me, core conservative values means fiscal responsibility, free market capitalism, small government, personal responsibility, and in the sovereignty of our Nation.”

Houle stated that a large part of restoring Canada’s sovereignty will require pulling out of UN, (including the Paris Accord and the Migration pact.)

Losely governed borders, but not anti-immigration. “We want people to come in. People who want to take advantage of the economy and diversity that Canada has to offer. But we want to govern borders more tightly to make sure we’re letting in the right people.”

The party also plans to revisit and reduce equalization payments to the provinces, completely separate from “climate alarmist” messaging, and pay off the country’s debt in two years.

About the climate change movement, Houle describes the party’s stance as “to not do anything. To say no to climate alarmists, and acknowledge that the climate is always changing, it has been for milenia and we just need to learn how to adapt… there is no unanimous scientific conclusion regarding climate change.”

The provinces, however, would have the right to govern and tax as they wish.

Houle believes that debt can most easily be eradicated by cutting “the fat” in a few unexpected places. Namely, the discontinuation of funding to CBC networks, Canada Post letter, and all that falls under the umbrella of foreign aid. “It’s not really in our abilities right now, as in-debt as we are.

We need to put the oxygen mask on ourselves first so that we have something to offer the rest of the world.”

As for CBC and Canada Post, he believes they will either figure out how to fund privately, be replaced with an alreadyexsisting service, or become obsolete.

“There’s no reason that a federal government needs their own media platform. A journalist cannot be objective on state payroll… It leaves too much room for propaganda and programming under the guise of entertainment.”

Houle’s ideal Canada involves better relationships with the First Nations people, with plans to consult with First Nations leaders on better possibilities that would benefit them for the future, rather than the current

system. “It’s true that the Canadian government has mistreated first nations in the past, and the current reserves are a product of that. I think with some consultation we can work out something that will offer better opportunity for them going forward.”

Among his suggestions, land ownership in current reserve or treaty land was one idea. Also mentioned were the disparity of clean water and proper roads.

Also in Houle’s sights, and available on the PPC website, are points such as: Abolish the capital gains tax • End corporate welfare • Repeal the federal carbon tax • Protect Canadian values from political & religious extremism • Withdrawn from UN agenda including the Paris Accord and Migration Pact • Balance the budget within 2 years of taking power • Bold federal tax reform (0-$15k no fed tax, $15k-$100k=15% & <100k=25%) • Review the billions spent on foreign aid, and phase out all aid with no moral or economic efficiency argument • Drop Corporate Income Tax from 15% to 10% Finally, he added that the most important thing any eligible voters can do is to be educated on all party platforms, and approach the polls with a sense of the Canada they wish to see.

“Give the PPC platform a read, even for the sake of informing yourself. Give every platform a read… there can be an attitude which dismisses a party because they are small or new, and a definite attitude we’ve seen recently of “voting against someone,” instead of voting in a way that aligns most with your beliefs. If there’s anything I would want to encourage voters to do this fall, it would be to vote for something, not against something.”

Beyond Meat Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser - Opinion As the world’s population grows, we are constantly reminded that things must change if we intend to feed a population on track to reach nine billion people and beyond.

In a completely separate conversation (as if people were not the problem) we are told by some experts that avoiding meat and dairy is the single biggest way to reduce our impact on the environment.

In a study published in the journal “Science”, researchers collected data on almost 40,000 farms across 119 countries.

They looked at foods representing about 90% of everything that is eaten.

In short, their analysis came to the conclusion that “A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact

on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use, and water use.”

Joseph Poore, at the University of Oxford, UK, led the research which also touched on fish farming, agricultural subsidies, land consumption vs calories and protein and GHG emissions and other pollution.

In western countries, beef consumption needs to fall by 90% and be replaced by five times more beans and pulses.

Of course, to do this, there is the usual talk of taxes on meat and dairy and labeling the environmental impact of products to convince us to give it all up.

What might be beyond meat? Well... “Beyond Meat” of course. This is one of the companies that manufacture plant-based burgers which are getting a lot of hype these days. The other big name is “Impossible Foods” and both have gained a real following and landed big deals across multiple continents. Lining up names such as Burger King, Taco Bell, Tim Hortons and one of the originals A&W in the fast food industry has brought these products to the masses. Now, these products will move to grocery stores so you can also cook these at home.

Now I will admit that I have not done my research and enjoyed one of these miracles of science yet. However, I do remember having a few veggie-burgers many years ago.

Frankly, back then people complained about the taste, but I didn’t feel it was terrible by any stretch of the taste buds.

What I do find interesting is the recent surge of dietitians speaking out with less than flattering reviews of plant-based burgers. With Beyond Meat’s website claiming that animalbased meats lead to a 16% increased risk of cancer and 21% increased risk of heart disease, you would think these plantbased impostors would be healthier.

Unfortunately, this may not be the case. Marketing, after all, IS marketing. While, when you choose a plant-based burger, you may be cutting out the dreaded artery plugging red meat, you are replacing that with a HIGHLY processed product. One that, like all highly processed foods, is not healthy for you and should be considered an indulgence vs a staple in your diet.

Answer from June 24th Question of the Week: The Parks and Recreation department is responsible for all the municipal green spaces within the Town limits. Do you know how many hectares of grass the department cuts and maintains? Yes or No The parks department maintains approximately 156 hectares of grass and uses all types of lawn equipment from weed eaters, push mowers, small riding mowers, to large PTO driven tractor mowers.

It takes the parks department 5 to 6 working days just to cut the grass in the

municipality with one whole day spent just doing the cemetery.

Priority is always given to the most public places such as the Elks/Kinsmen (Pysanka) Park and playground areas.

The DOLA (Dog off leash area) takes about 3 hours to mow and is done every 10 days.

The parks department employs a total of 5 full time positions with 7 summer students during the summer season.

RJV Donates New Admission Booth to Bruce Stampede As the annual Bruce Stampede fast approaches, the Bruce Stampede Association accepted the generous donation of a much-needed new admission booth contributed by RJV services in Vegreville.

90 Years Ago – July 10, 1929

Chas. Gordon started a crew of men at work last week extending

the town water service to the Mt. Pleasant area. Petitions for this boon had been handed in and discussed by the council and the

construction finally resolved upon under a local improvement

bylaw. Hitherto the residents of Mount Pleasant have had to rely for their water supply on a number of private wells, plus the well at

the high school – this latter being remarkably good well. The pri-

vate wells sometimes ran short and there was not enough of them

to endure a permanent supply. The R.M.B. Hospital particularly found it hard to secure an adequate supply.

An interesting and instructive feature of the livestock section at

the Vegreville fair this year will be an exhibit prepared jointly by the Alberta Department of Agriculture and the Department of Animal

Husbandry of the University of Alberta. This will be based on the results of experimental work and will show the advantage in the

raising of pigs from using home grown feeds, suitable pasture and a mineral mixture in the ration.

75 Years Ago – July 12, 1944

Mr. B. Plouffe, owner of Lot 15, Blk. 18, Plan 2483-P, having

through error constructed a building which infringes on the adja-

cent privately owned lot, was awarded a refund of $25.00, this

being the original purchase price from the town, and is permitted to remove it to other property purchased by him for the purpose, on motion Black-Lang.

John Diduck, returning officer for Vegreville, has opened an office

in the premises formerly occupied by the Vegreville Tailoring next door to Bender’s barber shop. Mr. Diduck is busy appointing enu-

merators, deputy retuning officers, poll clerks and getting ready the necessary election supplies.

W.M. Teresio, school teacher of Myrnam, has been nominated as

Labor-Progressive candidate in Vermilion electoral division.

Pte. J.R. Gorsline of Vegreville, was among a party of 18 members

who returned to Canada from overseas on a hospital ship recently.

The nature and extent of his injuries are not stated.

Fruit growers in Britain trying to protect their crops have adopted

an electric scarecrow. Connected to a six-volt battery, lines are run over and among trees. Birds perching on them get an electric shock and keep away.

50 Years Ago – July 10, 1969

Almost five hundred persons are registered for swim classes at

the Vegreville Swimming Pool and there is room for about 15 more for classes to begin next week. Sandra Culham, pool operator, informed the Observer that classes have been exceptionally well attended Monday to Saturday each week and over a hundred children are attending from Holden, Two Hills and Willingdon.

Dairymen and members of the Vegreville 4-H Dairy Club were

present at a dairy field day held at the farm of George Hoggins on

Wednesday last week, where they learned of matters that concern the dairy industry.

Changes in the Alberta Master Farm Family Award program were

announced recently by Agriculture Minister H.A. Rusie. Although the maximum number of awards will still be limited to five, two

Master Farm Families may now be named in one region of the

province. This change is being made because there were years when more than one family qualified for the award in one region.

The award program was designed to honor farm families who have achieved notable success in farming, home making and citizenship

and who demonstrate the practices that bring farm and family progress and to indicate the advantages of farming and farm life.

Imagine if we Treated All Rich People like Kawhi Aaron Wudrick Canadian Taxpayers Federation

We all want Kawhi Leonard to keep playing basketball for the Raptors. We want him to stay so badly that even Canadian politicians are getting into the polite pleading.

“I see lots of businesses offering Kawhi Leonard free food, an apartment and even a houseplant if he stays with @Raptors. So I feel that I should do my part. Hey Kawhi, if you stay we’ll give you free health care!” tweeted Health Minister Ginette Petitpas-Taylor.

Now, it goes without saying that health care in Canada is not free; we pay for it through our taxes and we pay a lot. And Leonard, like all people with money, is unlikely to sit on a waiting list for treatment when he can easily pay for care outside our borders.

For now, let’s set all of that aside. As far as “area politician tries to show she’s hip to current events,” the minister’s tweet was pretty unremarkable. But it sure offered an interesting contrast to the usual attitude many politicians take when it comes to trying to get wealthy people to stay in the country.

Consider for a moment how most politicians would view any non-celebrities earning Leonard’s income of $26 million per year. It definitely would not involve offering them free stuff. More likely is that their first observation would be that they probably aren’t paying enough in taxes, even though the top one per cent of earners in Canada already pay 18 per cent of all income taxes.

It is obvious why the rich are an easy target for politicians.

They’re an awfully unsympathetic lot.

With millions of Canadians struggling just to fill their gas tanks or pay the rent, it’s pretty hard to get choked up about people in the market for a second yacht. And on a practical level, there’s an implicit assumption that when you hike taxes on the rich, they’ll barely even notice.

But it turns out they do notice – and change their behaviour accordingly.

A recent study by the Fraser Institute projects that the recent federal tax increase imposed on high-income earners will yield extra revenue for just nine years – and after that will leave the government with less revenue from this group.

Why? Behavioural responses. When tax rates change, incentives change. Some people work less; others undertake more aggressive tax planning. A few even leave the country.

Worst of all for soak-the-rich proponents, there’s evidence that the people most sensitive to tax increases are also the richest.

At this point, defenders of soaking the rich usually respond in one of two ways.

The first is to deny that incentives matter and assume the rich won’t mind. It’s a tricky argument because incentives affect different people differently. Most people still need to buy gas to get to work even if the price goes up 5 cents per litre, but Leonard can easily save millions by picking a team in a low-tax jurisdiction.

The other response is to get angry: if these rich jerks don’t want to pay their fair share, they can just leave! But most progressive taxation proposals pin ever-higher spending on plans to squeeze a handful of rich people. If that spending depends on a small group of people, it’s probably unwise to make that small group even smaller.

Hairy Hill Rodeo back in the Saddle Emily Mailhot Reporter - Vegreville News Advertiser Hairy Hill’s biggest annual event came to a close on Saturday evening after a whirlwind of rodeo action all weekend long. From Friday, July 5-Saturday, July 6, the 31st annual Hairy Hill rodeo drew in a great number of guests for yet another successful year.

The rodeo began on Friday evening with a list of events, then jumped straight back in the saddle on Saturday morning with a pancake breakfast to start off the day, a slack rodeo, and heavy horse pulls.

To wil the heavy horse pulls, each of the competing drivers had their draft horses pull the load, which increased by 500-pound increments after everyone took a turn. For many turns, the horses barely broke a sweat, even as the weight was increased to more than the combined weight of the team. The eventual winner was Brian Fankhanel, with a total weight of 8,500 lbs.

After a small break to prepare, where guests were free to explore the vendors market, concession, and beer gardens, the rodeo activities with Lakeland Rodeo Association and local entries proceeded. Rodeo performances on Saturday

opened with tie-down roping, bareback and saddle bronc riding, novice horse riding, steer wrestling, junior bull riding, and a wild horse race before intermission.

At intermission, announcer Miles Wowk encouraged everyone to go down to the vendor market and but a glass of lemonade from the Country Boys Lemonade stand, set up in the box of a classic truck box. Fresh out of the Lemonade Day competition in Vegreville, where they won an entrepreneurial award, the business decided to sell their prettily presented lemonade at a few more venues over the summer.

Intermission events starred the R&S Trick Riding team’s performance of daring horseback feats. The kids at the rodeo had their turn at some rodeo action with a mutton busting competition for the younger children, and junior wild pony races for the older ones.

The evening rodeo activities included ladies, junior, and peewee barrel racing, team roping, and bull riding before moving on to the most-anticipated events for the evening: wild cow milking and the whiskey race.

The evening tied off with a lawn mower race and rodeo dance.

Folk Arts Showcase Features Opportunity for Young Actors

Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser The Folk Arts venue at this year’s Vegreville Pysanka Festival was as historically rich as always, with everything from exhibits on traditional Ukrainian music, clothing, cooking, and art, to workshops on how to make some traditional crafts yourself.

This year, however, a hidden gem graced the corner of the foyer. Vegrevilleraised filmmaker Troy Ruptash, back in Canada after a long trip to research, write, and set up some resources for his film “They Who Surround Us,” which shoots this summer, welcomed festival guests and Vegrevilians alike to visit his booth to learn more about the project, and even audition for a role.

“So far, I have some main characters casted,” Ruptash explained, “One character that will still need, and who we will be auditioning for soon is to be played by a young boy around eight years old.”

Ruptash further explained that acting experience was good, but not necessary as he hopes the one who takes this key role can do so in an “authentic way.”

Experience speaking Ukrainian may be an asset, but is not necessary.

While the display did give Ruptash the ability to take his talent search straight to Vegreville’s word-of-mouth network, he says that the booth, in its serendipitous way mainly gave him the opportunity to have some lengthy conversations with passerby.

“It was fairly quiet in here for much of the festival,” Ruptash said, “but that opened up a lot of in-depth conversations with those who made their way over here. We talked about the film and the heritage of this area, which is the focus of the movie’s content, which not only offered the opportunity to spread the word, but gave me some more insight and ideas that we can use.”

Troy Ruptash reported that they have two locations in the Vegreville area planned for the film, a partial sponsorship from the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko and the Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Fund, as well as the character audition and an acting workshop for any locals who are interested in being an extra in the film.

Polished Grandstand Shows at Vegreville Pysanka Festival

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent A kaleidoscopic display of professional Ukrainian dancers and musicians took the audience on a voyage through the wonder of the Ukrainian culture in dance and song at July 5, 6, and 7’s Grandstand Shows at Vegreville 46th Annual Ukrainian Pysanka Festival.

Yes, people came from near and far to dive into a cultural performing arts experience like the ones the grandstand shows presented.

The July 6’s afternoon show featured Ukrainian dance groups: Viter Dance, Shumka which is celebrating their 60th anniversary this year, Tetyana Lozova and Yaroslav Tkachuk who are top of the National ballet of Ukrainian. Each of these dance groups’ performance wowed the audience with the beauty of their choreography, vigorous and booming movements, or sweeping and soft dance steps where it was all perfectly suited to the style of Ukrainian

dance they performed.

The music entertainment came in a smooth pace and included Trioda, Auresia, and Zabava U Koli where these musicians were able to perform masterly their soft songs, dance songs, or songs with incredible strength and energy.

There was a speech presentation by Dr. Gennadii Siabrenko who expressed his gratitude on behalf of the citizens of Ukraine for the donations and collection of seven tonnes of medical supplies for the Ukraine Military Hospital.

Siabrenko also presented a plaque to the Vegreville Cultural Association for their help.

The most touching moment was when everyone was invited to dance and many children went to the stage to dance and express their enjoyment of the music by Zabava U Koli.

This show closed with all the performers going on stage while Trioda sang the Ukrainian National Anthem.

The Pysanka Games Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Vegreville Pysanka Festival always thinks of new activities and entertainment each year. For their 46th annual event, they offered a barrel of fun and laughter at their new attraction- The 2019 Pysanka Festival Games sponsored

by No Frills on July 6.

These games all had a Ukrainian theme to them.

There were 11 teams with four players on each team. The teams arrived from Vegreville and area, Edmonton, Saskatchewan and all over the world to compete in this fun challenge. To add to the excitement, each team invented a name for their team together. Some of the names were they called their teams were Baba and The Bunyaks, The Chasnyk Boys, The Giggly Sisters, Krazy Kozak, Shindi Ridi Dava, Golden Kubasas, and other interesting and original names.

Many participants wore Ukrainian

and other interesting attire which matched the names they chose for their team.

Hospodar and Hospodynia Greg Symick and Lori Chomik opened the games which kicked-in with the threelegged race and continued with the Golden Egg Race and went on to the Baba’s Bolt. Each of these races was a fun, obstacle course which participants said the Baba’s Bolt was the most challenging as it involved many steps.

There was plenty of laughter and cheering coming from the audience during the games as participants looked interesting and funny trying to do the different feats they had to achieve.

The winning team was Shindi Rigi Dava. Each of the members on this team will have their 2020 Pysanka Festival’s attendance paid for which will include accommodation on the Festival Grounds, free entrance to all Grandstand Shows, and Zabava Evening Dances, as well as, two food vouchers.

Two Hills Pool Still Closed for Repairs Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser The Two Hills and District Swimming Pool has been closed since late spring, after some mechanical issues with the pump were announced. On June 6, the pool announced, “Due to some mechanical issues with our pump we are currently closed until further notice. We have a pump mechanic coming to town tomorrow morning to diagnosis and hopefully fix the problem.”

The next day’s Facebook update told potential pool patrons that a new part had been ordered and would hopefully arrive the next Wednesday, after which the pool could open.

On June 11, the part had still not yet arrived, and summer programming was “postponed until further notice.”

The pool staff acknowleged any impatience patrons might have, saying that they felt them-

selves to be in the same boat. “I understand the frustration you may feel, however none of this was unavoidable and hopefully with these repairs we will see less of these issues. Thank you so much for following our page and supporting us through this.”

As of June 15, the part has been installed and they reported that everything is looking good, and hopefully after an inspection later in the week the pool would be open to the public again… but reported that they will need more time as there are still some loose ends to tie up and make sure that everything is “Completely safe and ready to go,” before opening the doors.

This work is allegedly because of something that came up during the inspection, but which should be another “quick fix.”

Inside Ducks Unlimited – Wetlands Action in this Region Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser

The wetlands have been a pretty hot topic recently, but there’s still a lot that landowners and the general public may not be aware of. Consulting on wetlands issues, Brent Brent Thygsen, Northern Region Conservation Programs Lead for Ducks Unlimited Canada, shared some solutions and action that has been taken in our area in recent months.

Wetlands are defined by Wetlands Alberta as, “Wetlands are low-lying areas of land covered by water long enough to support aquatic plants and wildlife for part of their life cycle. Wetlands are highly diverse, productive ecosystems that provide a host of ecological services and form an integral component of Alberta’s diverse landscapes.”

We’ve all seen them before - the low spots in the field that fill up in the spring or after a lot of rain. In the past few weeks, it would seem this area has been surrounded by wetlands.

The definition persists to state that wetlands play an integral role in the health of the landscape. More than just ecological benefits, however, Thygsen dove into some ways that proper management and restoration of the wetlands can reap financial benefits for farmers.

“There are certain tax benefits, as well as the lease payment for the restoration period,” Thygsen continued, “More than that, it’s about return on investment… if you’ve drained your wetlands but still aren’t able to farm that land because the topsoil is blown away, or you are purchasing more fertilizer to pump nutrients back into the ground, there are other options. The money you’re paying for synthetic nutrients may be worth the lost profits for one or two years of restoring that natural wetland.”

Thygsen further explained that removing and draining wetlands affects the ability of the ground to soak up the water. “We’ve all seen arable crop field, with the low areas worked up... Even if they’ve been drained, lower areas will be wet.

Wetlands left intact will have already soaked up the water naturally.

“Draining wetlands also impacts the infrastructure that they use every day. If the county has to drain a road that someone is draining into, it affects tax bills at the end of the day.”

Some changes to DUC projects

have evolved since the Wetland Policy was developed in 2013 to conserve, restore, protect, and manage Alberta’s wetlands. Water, however, has always been the property of the Crown and subject to certain rights.

“What’s happened is that a combination of legislation and education. In regards to what’s required,” Thygsen explained. “Wetland requirement has been strengthened in response to overland flooding in the past 5 years.”

He further explained some facets of the policy: “If you’re a County developing a road or a developer developing a condo, you have to be aware and minimize the impact. If I’m a developer that’s removing a basin, I have to replace it somewhere on the landscape.”

More than what many remember as DUC programs, the organization has undergone a few changes in the services they offer since the policy was brought forth. In this area, including Beaver County, in particular, DUC offers a number of opportunities for landowners. The most popular amongst them are: 1. Wetland Restoration Program Plugging (damming) of wetland drains in order to allow the basin to fill up and restore over a period of time. The gist is that if a landowner has a drained wetland on their property that has been ditched via mechanical means they may be eligible to receive funding in the form of a 10-year lease to allow DUC to restore that basin. In return for restoring that basin, DUC will compensate the landowner for the affected drainage, i.e., 15-acre drained basin means the landowner could get paid $45,000 if we assume the land value is $3,000/ac just for putting a wetland back to the way it was before. This type of thing has big impacts on county road budgets and correlates directly back to county tax rates.

2. Revolving Land Conservation Program Under this program, DUC purchases land that is either being annually cropped or already seeded into grass and restores both the uplands and the wetlands. Once this work is complete a conservation easement is placed on the title to run in perpetuity with the parcel. The parcel is then placed back on to the local ag market for resale. The property is thereafter protected in perpetuity by a C.E making it a purely pasture/hay quarter with the provision within the C.E that if the grass stand becomes unproductive the landowner may work with DUC to re-seed a new grass stand in the future.

(Provided the land has been seeded to a tame grass mix).

Other programs are also available, and while they are most often suggested by a Land Negotiator who has seen aerial photos of the landscape, landowners also have the ability to reach out to DUC and see what programs may work best for their “trouble area” damaged and drained wetlands.

Cooking with Emily – Raspberry Cheesecake Semifreddo Emily Mailhot Vegreville News Advertiser Oh, sweet summer! This past week has gotten a little warmer… back into the sunshine, sandals, and ice cream cone days that we all revere so fondly, and hold onto in the winter months to remind ourselves of brighter days ahead.

Just one thing has interrupted my ice cream day dreams as of late.

For those who haven’t been on the internet lately and have missed the recent online Challenge trend of “opening and licking ice cream buckets in stores and then putting them back,” which resulted in a court case and eventual public endangerment charges for the youth who started it…maybe that sentence (which I never thought I would have to write) will suffice as an explanation as to why I’ve had some skepticism of the ice cream aisle over the past week or so. Needless to say, I was more than happy to jump on the opportunity to create a sweet frozen treat from my own kitchen.

The ingredients were easy to find, and I already owned some of the basics. A word to the wise… sweetened condensed milk is kept in the same aisle as coffee, and not (as would be expected) in the baking needs aisle.

At home, I macerated the raspberries… is that right? Macerated? I cooked them over the stove with some sugar, (see steps one and two, printed in last week’s VNA), while my cooking partner put all the dairy ingredients plus vanilla into the blender. As I don’t own a standing mixer, we figured this would work just fine, and it did.

After the individual ingredients had been prepared, we used a plastic Boston Pizza takeout container, as it had similar structure to the container recommended by the recipe, and layered the berries and ice cream-ish substance. At the end, we got about two berry layers and three dairy layers.

After freezing overnight, I had some for breakfast (because) and while I would say it’s a bit too rich to start the day off with, it would be a delicious cheesecake dessert to serve, maybe when there are guests around.

If you want a taste of the Raspberry Cheesecake Semifreddo, just follow all the directions in last week’s Advertiser (page 19) and it will turn out just fine… or invite me to your next pot luck. Because now that I’ve found this good, easy recipe, this is definitely what I’d be bringing.

Cash: You're already on the right path by doing your homework. Researching on the web is a great place to educate yourself about the history of the sword.

The next step is to have it appraised. If you're lucky enough to have the Antiques Roadshow in town, it may well be worth a visit.

The professionals at those venues may be able to give you some information on the sword's history and overall worth.

Carry: Otherwise, try to find an appraiser who specializes in Civil

War items so you can get a true sense of the sword's value. Often, rare items can be placed on auction and made available to collectors or others interested in memorabilia from the Civil War era.

Vegreville Pysanka Festival’s Opening Ceremony Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Every great celebration needs a good introduction. The July 5’s Opening Ceremony at the 46th Annual Vegreville Ukrainian Pysanka Festival did this as it spotlighted Ukrainian’s honors; lives, history, traditions, songs, and dance.

President of Vegreville Cultural Association, Myron Kruk was the emcee.

A.L. Horton School’s Ukrainian Bilingual Program’s students charmed the audiences as they took on the onset of the ceremony with a well-versed performance of the Canadian and Ukrainian national anthems while they continued on to sing some more songs in Ukrainian and English.

Two Hills Ukrainian Dancer then made a smooth entrance as they won the audience over with their graceful and springy Ukrainian dance performances.

Fr. Daniel Wach from Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church presented the invocation after that.

Then Kruk announced the winners of the Storefront and Spirited Contest which was first place was won by Vegreville ATB Financial and second place was won by Vegreville and District Co-op.

Next to appear on stage were the Vegreville Svitlo Dancers whose talent kept the audience in bright spirits.

These two dance groups performed several times during the ceremony.

Kruk then read greetings from Fort Saskatchewan/Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk who wasn’t able to attend. “I am proud to say that I am the descendant of one of the first Ukrainian settlers,” Kruk read. “This festival allows us to focus on the comforts of great music, great friends, and great times. In doing so, we strengthen the connection we have to this culture and all cultures in the human race.”

MP for Lakeland, Shannon Stubbs was also unable to attend but her greetings mentioned that the Pysanka Festival showcases the rich Ukrainian culture and Alberta is a province with a rich cultural diversity we can all be proud of.

Reeve for the County of Minburn, Roger Konieczny and Mayor for the Town of Vegreville, Tim MacPhee also brought greetings.

Following this, the light shone on John Kusick as representative for 840 CFCW and Vegreville Ukrainian Cultural Association, Jackie Rae inducted John into the Ukrainian Music Hall of Honor. John began playing music at seven. Around the

age of 16, he played with different bands in Edmonton. John was the first musician, along with his late friend, Henry Shmetura to start a Ukrainian hour on the radio stations-CFRN and then CHFA. He has since played with the bands-Country Gentlemen and HiLites. John’s current band he plays with is the local group, Harmony where he still entertains people at 90 years old.

Harmony then took the ceremony over with their music performances which hit the hearts of the audience as John did what he does best.

This was followed by Larissa Bombak announcing the winners of the Children’s Writing Competition Awards which were presented to children who wrote about Ukrainian Easter, Christmas and Wedding’s bread.

Greetings were given by Kruk Ukrainian Canadian Congress who stated that this festival was one of Alberta’s longest-running festivals.

A representative for Vegreville Cultural Associaton, Elsie Kawulych then introduced the Hospodar and Hospodynia for 2019, Greg Syrnick and Lori Chomik.

Greg and Lori reside at Calgary now. Lori was born and raised in Vegreville where she competed, performed, volunteered, and attended many festivals. Since then, she joined professional Ukrainian dance groups. Greg grew up in Saskatchewan and has been involved in Ukrainian choirs, as well as, many other Ukrainian endeavors. Together, Greg and Lori continue to volunteer for many Ukrainian projects locally and for the broader Ukrainian community.

Alberta RCMP sends Nightly Notifications at 9 p.m.

The #9PMRoutine is a movement that is supported by police forces across the world. People are encouraged to follow a routine checklist every night to double check their property is locked up and safe.

A common question from the public is, “Why should I do this?”

Property crimes are often crimes of opportunity and small things like locking doors and turning on lights can deter criminals.

Last summer (June to August 2018) there were close to 36,000 propertyrelated incidents in RCMP jurisdiction and almost 50 per cent of all reported bicycle thefts occurred in the summer months.

Here are some ideas to include in your 9 p.m. routine: • Turn on outside lights at night • Lock your doors • Put away toys and bikes in a locked, safe location

• Put away tools when you’re finished with them • Put away outdoor equipment such as lawn mowers and weed trimmers • Lock up off-highway vehicles (ATVs, dirt bikes, etc.)

• Double check vehicles are locked and keys are removed Depending who you talk to, forming a habit can take anywhere from 21 to 66 days. This is why Alberta RCMP will be posting every night for two full months. By remembering to lock up and secure your property, you’re helping to create a safer Alberta.

Yes, unfortunately, you read correctly.

A number of industry players who have built businesses on harvesting black soldier flies for consumption by exotic pets such as lizards are now looking towards feeding humans.

Black soldier fly larvae are amazing organisms. They can pretty much ingest any organic waste (kitchen waste, manure, toxic algae, etc and convert it into high-quality protein with a tiny carbon footprint. They’re also high in calcium!!

Similar efforts have been made with crickets which are now a staple for many in the form of protein powder and flour.

According to Jeff Tomberlin, a professor of entomology at Texas A&M University, the bug industry could

“save lives, stabilize economies, create jobs and protect the environment.”

In one year, a single acre of black soldier fly larvae can produce more protein than 3,000 acres of cattle or 130 acres of soybeans. That single acre can produce more than 130,000 pounds of protein per year.

So the choice seems to be clear.

Let’s keep adding humans, clearcutting trees and abusing our planet in a myriad of ways and we can all look forward to feasting. Mmmmm, maggots!

I’m holding out for some real common sense to kick in and in the meantime, I will gladly enjoy some Alberta beef.

Pioneer Village Demonstrations and Displays at Pysanka Festival Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Going back through the years is an interesting experience as sometimes people need to flash-back in time to obtain an appreciation for how pioneers worked hard. The Pioneer Village at the 46th Annual Pysanka Festival on June 5, 6, and 7 allowed everyone to watch a demonstration or view displays which showcased our heritage.

Steve Orleski and his volunteers were presenting demonstrations at the stone mill. Steve said the first step to making bread our ancestors did began with wheat being ground with hand made grinding stones. Steve and his volunteers did this with a machine run stone grinding mill. A flyer Steve complied wrote a carter disc grain cleaner was the first step in grain grinding in the pioneer days to clean the grain from weeds. Then the grain is put through a blower fan and after this, the grain is put in the stone flour mill.

The bread baking in a peche outdoor clay oven was done by Director, Pearl Kuhn with the assistance of volunteers. Our pioneers used to bake bread in this type of oven which was made warm by using hot coals that were removed later.

The pioneer section also featured many antique items from Vegreville Regional Museum. There was flailing which is where you use a tool to thresh grain by hand.

At another section was Sky Hoffas who did leatherworking and blacksmith demonstrations. Sky said he is excited to be the new shop teacher at Vegreville Composite High School for the upcoming 2019/2020 school year. Sky said leatherworking is one of the oldest crafts. It started with drum making and rattle making.

It involves anything working with the animal’s skin. There are many different ways to tan it. You can use urine, lye, egg yolks, or you can smoke it. There are many different ways to work with it. It is a beautiful versatile craft. Children love working with leather because it is very durable and has many uses for it, including putting

images into the leather by tooling with it.

Sky also ran the forge and did some blacksmithing there. He made some knives, rings, and other artistic work. Sky said blacksmithing is also a very old craft which was essential to the development of rural Alberta in the early 1900s and late 1800s.

Blacksmithing in the Viking age was about the acquisition of materials.

On July 6, John Babcock who worked as a blacksmith for 60 years and later became a poet who writes about life years ago and his years working as a blacksmith was handing out the poems for free to anyone who dropped into his booth.

Gail Trimble also made his appearance on July 6 with his rope-making demonstrations where participants were able to make their own ropes.

Members attended and 2 suspects have been identified. These two suspects are believed to be associated with a stolen vehicle that was later abandoned in a ditch.

During the week there were 0 false alarms, 3 false 911s and 1 animal collisions totaling 82 calls for service.

This greater mix of vehicles increases the risk of commercial and passenger vehicle collisions.

Alberta RCMP encourages you to practice the following traffic safety tips.

Drivers of passenger vehicles: Make sure to stay far enough behind big trucks to see both side mirrors on the truck. (Alberta Transportation 2015) Drivers of commercial vehicles: Maintain a large following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Rick Gardner, Alberta Sheriffs. “If you drive a commercial vehicle, make sure it is always within the allowed weight limit and in good operating condition. If you drive a passenger vehicle, pay extra attention to blind spots.”

“In 2018, there were 38 fatal collisions involving semi-trucks that resulted in 42 deaths in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions,” says Supt. Gary Graham, Alberta RCMP Traffic Services.

“Understanding and respecting factors such as breaking distances and blind spots associated with larger commercial vehicles is critical to safe movements and destination arrivals of all road users.”

Counterfeits and Cash-handling: What you Need to Know Canadian Federation for Independent Business If you’re a victim of counterfeiting, you might expect to be recoup the losses— but that’s not how it works. Victims aren’t compensated, so it pays to verify your bills.

With each new series of banknotes comes ever more sophisticated security features – but they’re only effective if you use them. Here are some of the security features of the latest series.

TOUCH the large number, the shoulders of the large portrait, and the words ‘Bank of Canada’/’Banque du Canada’ on the front of the bill. You should find they are raised to the touch.

TILT the top of the bill towards you and you should see sharp colour changes in the metallic building in the large transparent window.

LOOK at the metallic portrait in the large window – it should match the large portrait on the front of the bill.

LOOK at the numbers in and around the large window; they should match the value of the note and some will appear in reverse.

LOOK at the frosted maple leaf window and check for the transparent outline.

Note: the $20 bill is the most widely used and counterfeited bank note The Canada 150 commemorative $10 bill has some additional security features: Raised ink on the large number, four portraits, the word “Canada”, the vertical landscape panels and the text “Canada 1867-2017.”

Colour-shifting ink on the checkered pattern in the arch.

The large window containing metallic symbols and images should be transparent.

Sharp colour-changes in the metallic elements (coat of arms, Canadian flag, and owl).

The 3-D maple leaves appear to be raised, but are actually flat.

On top of these security features to look for, you and your employees should

practice good cash-handling habits: Leave currency on the cash register ledge or other secure area visible to the customer until the transaction is complete in order to avoid disputes over the amount being paid.

Count change back to the customer to avoid mistakes.

Make sure the cash or cheque from the transaction is placed in the cash drawer or other secure container before handling the next transaction.

Don’t make change for someone who is not making a purchase.

Purchase a counterfeit bill detector and use it.

Check for the security features mentioned above.

Create a company policy on the acceptance of non-Canadian currency and post in a prominent place. Include the exchange rate that will be used.

Have a company policy on rounding cash transactions due to the elimination of the penny and post in a prominent place.

It is against the law to knowingly use a counterfeit bill or to keep one without a lawful reason. If you suspect a bill is counterfeit: Politely explain your concerns to the customer and request another bill Advise the customer to check the note with the local police Notify the local police of a possible attempt to pass counterfeit money.

Avoid putting yourself and your employees at risk.

Be courteous to the customer; they may be an innocent victim, unaware the bill is suspicious.

Note: All suspected counterfeit bank notes (U.S. and Canadian) must be turned over to local police.

Preventing Hepatitis B Alberta Health Services World Hepatitis Day is July 28.

Close to 300 million people around the world live with a hepatitis B infection.

It is potentially life-threatening and is spread through blood or body fluids from an infected person.

What is it?

Hepatitis B is a liver disease caused by a virus. It is the leading cause of liver cancer.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include tiredness, poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, stomach and joint pain, dark-coloured urine and light-coloured stool and yellowing of eyes and skin.

Who is at risk?

Activities such as unprotected sex, sharing needles, tattooing or acupuncture put people at increased risk. In some countries, medical treatments and blood products may also be a source of infection.

Is there a vaccine to help prevent illness?

Yes, there is a vaccine available for all ages. A vaccine series against hepatitis B is 95- to 100-per-cent effective in preventing infection caused by the virus before exposure and for at least 30 years following immunization.

The theme for this year’s Pysanka Festival was traditional Ukrainian ritual breads. So, Vegreville Cultural Association had a writing competition where they invited students from grades one to grade nine to write about Ukrainian Christmas, Easter, and wedding breads.

Old Vegreville Celebrates Milestone Anniversary Alan Robert Old Vegreville Social Society July 8, 2019 –The Old Vegreville Social Society is celebrating the 125th anniversary of Vegreville’s founding back on April 21st, 1894. The original town site is marked by a memorial, located on the Holden Road, 8km South-west of the modern town. South of the old town site cairn is the Old Vegreville School, home of the Social Society. In 1905 the Canadian Northern Railway came through the area, prompting the movement of the Hamlet to its current location, next to the rail line.

The town was named by the first settlers, a group of French Canadian pioneers who left a drought stricken settlement attempted in Kansas, USA. They were drawn by the fertility of the land, said to be the Garden of the Vermilion River Valley, within Treaty six lands. The early settlers were often assisted by the Oblate

Fathers of St. Albert and fittingly choose the name of a man credited with encouraging settlement in Western Canada, Father Valentin Vegreville O.M.I. (18291903). Father Vegreville, was born and ordained in France and arrived in the Canadian North-west territories in 1852. The good Father was an expert linguist in Cree, Montagne and Assiniboine. He wrote several manuscripts on the many dialects of the native languages in our area. He was recognized internationally, with some of his work published by the Smithsonian Institute in Washington.

English people from Eastern Canada, the USA and the British Isles soon followed, with a major wave of emigration from Eastern and Central Europe prior to WWI, enticed by the promise of free land for homesteaders. Today Vegreville enjoys the fruits of the many different peoples and cultures that have spent the last 125 years working in harmony to build our vibrant community, something we can all celebrate

Welcome Back to the Grandstand Emily Mailhot Reporter - Vegreville News Advertiser As the Vegreville Pysanka Festival’s 46th year entered into its first evening of remarkable grandstand shows on Friday, July 5, festival guests flooded the grandstand for the production. Master of Ceremonies Mike Ciona opened with a goodnatured joke, and the crowd quickly warmed to his narration of the event and the prospect of the exciting evening of performances ahead.

Without further ado, the 46th festival kicked off in the only way it can: with Privit.

In the enormous, colourful production the dancers used many of the most wellbeloved techniques, formations, and imagery of Ukrainian dancing to tell a story of welcome to the audience.

Back for months now after performing with the National Academic Orchestra of Ukraine in September, Canada’s Ukrainian Shumka dancers needed very little introduction for the audience to greet them with cheers of delight.

“You are a great crowd,” acknowledged Cionda. “Whatever you are today, rinse and repeat tomorrow.”

From the National Ballet of Ukraine, prima ballerina Tetyana Lozova and ballerino Yaroslav Tkachuk performed a duet that covered the audience in hushed awe, followed by rapturous applause.

After the ballet performance, the entertainment kicked up a notch with a musical set by 2013 Ukrainian X-Factor finalists, Trioda. Though one of the singers was expecting his first child to be born in Ukraine while he was at the Pysanka Festival, there seemed to be little to no distraction. The Ukrainian boy band performed their

own original hits, as well as some classics in English. They also impressed the audience with their tight harmonies in a capella.

Shumka returned to the stage with a production that was originally from their renowned Cinderella production. Meant to exhibit the strength and endurance of “more than the men,” the scene told the story of a camp full of soldiers.

Auriesia was next to take the stage with her Ukrainian reggae music. Originally from Edmonton, she now lives in Montreal. These cultural influences, combined with her Ukrainian heritage, is where she draws her musical influences. The songs she sang were from her debut album in Ukrainian.

Viter dance performed their “Callina,” dance in honour of the cranberry, which is symbolic of love. This performance was followed by the return of both Shumka and Trioda.

As Trioda took to the stage again, they came with the announcement that the expected baby boy had been born since their last set ended.

Eclectic Ukrainian folk rock band Zapovid held the stage finally, and provided the music for a fusion of the day’s talents; a scene from Shumka’s Nutcracker which also welcomed Tetyana Lozova and Yaroslav Tkachuk.

Zapovid then proceeded with other songs from their recent album, which was dropped in March, for the polka party.

A Hopak by the world-famous Shumka dancers, which had been performed around the world for queens, presidents, and dignitaries, closed off the performances at the Vegreville Pysanka Festival’s first night.

The 50/50 tickets winners share on Friday evening was $390.

A Fond Farewell to Pysanka Festivities

Emily Mailhot Reporter - Vegreville News Advertiser The final grandstand performances for Vegreville’s 46th annual Pysanka Festival were bittersweet, and slightly less-attended than the previous ones as many travelers set out for home.

Viter began the celebrations with a dance, then introducing the Viter Choir Ensemble, who led in their own set of powerful, energetic songs, including, “You drank and I drank,” (English translation) For those who had visited the beer gardens… an entertaining comedic take on the song.

The dancers then took over the stage to the choral music, spinning, stomping, and dancing in pairs.

2013 super-finalists of the Ukrainian X-factor held the spotlight with their rendition of “One in a Million,” by Bosson, as well as their hits in Ukrainian.

The audience was stunned into silence by their a Capella harmonies.

Internationally acclaimed ballet dancers Tetyana Lozova and Yaroslav Tkachuk brought back for the final time, their duet performed at the Friday grandstand show.

A presentation from the Canadian National Riding and Dancing association gifted Master of Ceremonies Mike Ciona with a hat, a badge, and a shirt as a gift of thanks for his support.

The men of Viter returned to the stage with a dance narration of strength, swords, and a comic twist. Volya dancers followed the performance with a

production in pairs, and Trioda graced the stage for another set.

Yaroslav Tkachuk, known from the ballet duo, presented a solo dance with a masculine display of energy and strength with leaps and stunts throughout.

The Viter ensemble dancers and singers performed either the tragic story of a grandmother trying to get a young girl to do chores or a happy tale of a young girl who successfully evades chores to spend time with her friends and her boyfriend.

Hospodar and Hospodynia Greg Syrnick and Lori Chomik were invited to the stage to make their closing announcements.

“Thank you to Vegreville, happy for those who introduced themselves, thanks to the previous hospodar and hospodynia who helped us gain our footing.”

The then did the 50/50 draw for a $275 takeaway.

Tying up the festival showcase, local band Milenia, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary, took the stage with gratitude for the audience and the surrounding community. They performed for the polka party and for a dance on-stage.

The final Hopak for the weekend tied off the grandstand showcases with flair, giving the festival guests one more colourful taste of Ukrainian culture before sending them home, another Pysanka Festival in the books.

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent The purest and most brilliant aspects of the Ukrainian culture and history were available for all ages to experience at the 46th Annual Vegreville Ukrainian Pysanka Festival on July 5, 6, and 7.

This event featured other novelties and attractions also so there were something for everyone’s taste and style.

The Cossack Camp was at the entrance of Vegreville Agricultural Grounds.

From this, people were able to go back in time and see what it was like for the Cossack who lived a simple life where they lived in canvas tents, regularly cooked their food over an outdoor fire.

The Cultural Showcase had people dancing to bands such as the Melody Kings, Marango, Diamonds, and Polka Ramblers. They were able to watch and listen to dance and music groups such as the Vegreville Svitlo Dancers, Two Hills Ukrainian Dancers, Chaika Concert

Ensemble, Mazur Polish Dancers, Dzherelo Children’s Drama Group, Singer/Songwriter Samantha Wiltzen, A.L. Horton Ukrainian Bilingual students, and more.

Hypnotist Curtis Michael also had a show in the Cultural Showcase where he had the centre raining in laughter as the audience watched him hypnotize people.

This event also featured the regular attractions of dances, songs, dance competitions, ceremonies, Pioneer Village, Zabava Evening Dances, Workshops, Thistle Hill Farm Petting Zoo, Beer Gardens, Folk Arts, Trace Your Ukrainian Roots, Artists Corner, Information sessions, Troy Ruptash and crew’s Information Booth on the movie, ‘Those Who Surround Us’, Yarmarok Marketplace, Zabava dances, outdoor markets, children’s attractions, and other activities and attractions that were too numerous to name.

Planting Fun at Patio Party Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent

One of the steps to planting is to enjoy it were the words of a child. The children seemed to do this when they participated in the first session of the Patio Party’s program on July 2 which was about transplanting plants and seeds to beautify Vegreville Centennial Library’s patio.

Library Programmer, Calina Sokalski, and Library Summer Program Assistant, Rylan Langkow planned this program while special guest, Viola Braun-Fox volunteered to help the children learn how to transplant flowers and use seeds to grow flowers.

she showed them the simple process of aeration where the children had to mix-up the soil. Fox went on to say the earth is very important to grow things in and plants usually need water, good soil, and seeds to grow successfully.

Then she said the steps to planting were preparation, getting and using tools, doing the job, and cleaning up afterward.

Sokalski said the children were all going to be involved in making the space in the patio beautiful so people who visit the library will enjoy using it.

The Patio Party’s program is a free program which will be held once a week from July 2-August 6 and is meant for children from six to 12. If interested, phone the library for more details

Eating Healthy During Barbecue Season Alberta Health Services Did you know that barbecues can include healthy foods and still taste great? Here are some ideas to get you started: Meat: Look for lean cuts of meat or poultry without skin.

Choose fish and shellfish for variety. Season your meat, poultry or fish with your favourite herbs and spices without added salt.

Meatless: Try barbequed tofu-use firm or extra firm tofu and season with herbs and spices or try a marinade. Rub with oil or use a non-stick cooking spray to keep it from sticking to the grill. Grill for 6-7 minutes per side.

Kabobs: Cut up colourful vegetables such as bell peppers, onions, zucchini, mushrooms, and tomatoes and cook them on a kabob stick. Let everyone in the family make their own kabobs.

Sides: Bake potatoes or yams wrapped in aluminum foil on the barbecue. This method also works well with corn on the cob.

Salads: Offer raw vegetables or green salad as a side dish with the meal. Mix low fat plain yogurt with ingredients such as lemon or lime juice, herbs and spices to make tasty dips and dressings. Add chickpeas, beans or lentils to salads to add variety and protein.

Dessert: Try grilled pineapple rings, plums or peaches with a little bit of low fat yogurt. Or, take advantage of ripe seasonal fruit such as berries and watermelon. Serve them cut up for everyone to enjoy.

Drinks: Make your own flavoured water using lemon or lime wedges, mint leaves or frozen berries.

First Stop on the Park Hop

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Play is one of the most essential activities for children’s growth and development. Vegreville has many parks where families can visit and have a good time.

For the third year, Vegreville and District Child Development Coalition (VDCDC) offers guided park play and fun at the five, Five Stop Park Hops they present at the five main parks in Vegreville.

The first, Five Stop Park Hop on July 5 was at the Betty McPherson Memorial Playground which is close to Riverview Ball Park.

Coordinator for VDCDC, Danielle Flaathen said Parent Link Centre and VDCDC have partnered for this event

to promote development in children from birth to six years of age. Each park has a sign which tells which of the five domains of early childhood development it focuses on. “This park has the social competence sign so we have various stations; there is the emotional dice, bubble blowing, t-ball, and a parachute station. Each of those stations we work on the other domains with respect to social competence. So, you have the physical development station which is aimed to work at social competence and then we have free play for the children too.”

There were also healthy snacks of bananas, yogurt, and water, as well as, several prizes and children went home with free giveaways.
