Vegreville Agricultural Society is a vibrant organization! The members contributed over 56,000 volunteer hours to events, board meetings, conferences, and other happenings in 2025.

The Annual General Meeting was offered at Vegreville Multi-Plex Centre on December 10.

President Kris Klammer reported that it has been a busy year!

Klammer shared that they continue to have a close partnership with the APCCA who appreciate the quality of their chuckwagon track, which is ranked among the top few in the province! Partnerships with community organizations continue to bring shared value.

make it happen. An additional call-out would be the exhibit hall and the efforts of all the ladies that make it happen. There is no truer showcase of the excellence and diversity of passions displayed by our community members.

Some additional highlights of the season include the RV demolition derby at the Father’s Day event.

The Ag Society Executive has been taking a more deliberate approach to strategy planning and the execution of future events. For 2026, we will be able to look forward to an RV Club coming to hang out on our grounds. Unfortunately, we will also be losing the corn maze due to the sale of the grounds. Involvement has been excellent so far-please continue to bring any ideas or expertise forward!” Klammer noted.

Budget Talks to Continue for Vegreville Town Council Michelle Pinon News Advertiser Vegreville town council passed all three readings in one sitting to adopt the new Fees and Charges Bylaw (No.12-2025) at its Dec. 8 regular council meeting.

Mayor Tim MacPhee stated, “It’s one of the last pieces of our budget going ahead.

We still have a little tinkering left to do in the budget and I’m hoping that just before Christmas that we can all sit down one more time and hopefully, we can settle on something.”

Other than a few fees and charges in this bylaw, MacPhee said there would be an overall 15 percent increase for fees, rates and charges for services provided by the municipality. He remarked that some of the fees hadn’t been increased post Covid, such as fees for some of the town’s recreational facilities. Additionally, “Some of the fees that we were charging were well below other municipalities if we look at per capita costs that are covered in this bylaw were still in the median of municipalities our size,” noted MacPhee.

“Yes, that is correct. Even with the 15 percent increase we are below the median,” said Chief Administrative Officer Sandra Ling.

The fees and charges were looked at in

detail during the Dec. 3 budget meeting. At the time, it was determined that a 15 percent increase in fees and charges would generate $613,590 in additional revenue to eliminate the deficit that was calculated to be $313,000.

Under Alberta’s Municipal Government Act (MGA) municipalities must adopt an annual operating budget where revenues equal or exceed expenses. As the budget currently is, there would be a proposed 1.5 percent tax increase, but that could also change as well as other items before council adopts the budget.

Council was firm in its desire not to cut services to residents. Council also agreed to eliminate its contribution to STARS air ambulance that was more than $11,000 as well as not support a new volunteer coordinator position with Family and Community Support Services.

MacPhee commented that this was the toughest budget he’s faced on 13 years on council. The main reason for that is the Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO).

Corporate Services Director Meghan Saskiw provided a detailed explanation on ARO following an information request by the News Advertiser. “With respect to Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO), this does have an impact on the 2026 operating budget through a significant one-time

increase in expense of approximately $170,000. This increase is the result of a substantial change in the required accrual under the new ARO accounting framework.

Going forward, this expense is expected to increase much more incrementally in future operating budgets, rather than experiencing similar large one-time adjustments.

The recognition of ARO under this new framework does not impact the Town’s capital plans.

A large portion of the Town’s ARO relates to the ownership and operation of the municipal landfill. The Town is one of only a small number of municipalities that owns and operates a landfill directly within its boundaries, rather than through a regional commission, which is why this obligation is more significant for us than for most other municipalities.

With respect to audit implications, if the Town did not recognize this accounting standard, it would result in qualified audit opinions. Qualified audits, in turn, could lead to reduced funding eligibility from both the provincial and federal governments, as compliance with public sector accounting standards is a key requirement tied to many grant programs.”

Vegreville Mayor Tim MacPhee said he doesn’t know what RCMP costs will be moving forward, but hazarded a guess that they will continue to rise in years to come.

Policing costs were discussed following presentation of a Nov. 27 letter written by Brian Sauve, President and CEO of the National Police Federation to the Town of Vegreville. Sauve said the NFP represents $20,000 RCMP across Canada and internationally with 3,100 serving in Alberta.

MacPhee stated that, “Policing is the biggest single thing in our budget, and I’m sure that next year we’ll be looking at another $250,000. So, half a million in two years that we have to collect in taxes.” MacPhee also pointed out, “We’re working on a two to three percent pay raise for them (RCMP) and I’m sure they’ll do a lot better than that.

Vacancies are a problem, but the biggest thing is that as Albertans we all pay for police costs. We all pay in our tax dollars that are collected by the province, and to see this Sherriffs’ department being enlarged. I mean it’s no different than anybody here with our income tax we offset the cost of policing in municipalities that are under 5,000 people.

Sheriffs department, every resident in town, plus their own policing costs soaring as well. So, I mean it’s a triple hit on residents of communities over 5,000; it really is and it’s not going to get any better. We know that.”

In conversation with RCMP Staff Sgt. Colin Folk, MacPhee was told some members of the Vegreville RCMP detachment have put in for their transfers. The good news, said MacPhee, is that there is a class comprised of all Albertans currently training at RCMP depot in Regina.

Councillor Taneen Rudyk said, “It’s important to note communities that have been allowed to experiment with other polices forces, for example, Grande Prairie has utilized a grant from the province, but essentially, we’re already paying for their experiment and they’ve already outstripped the cost, and we’re not going to find new recruits anywhere. So, people who are concerned with public safety or adequately staff policing component, that won’t be assisted by creating another police service in my opinion.”

MacPhee added, “We’re in on the RCMP in town for every 70 cents on the dollar. We’re in regular taxes as Albertans helping other municipalities, and we’re also in on the new Sheriffs department.” He feels that unless taxpayers get more upset and go to the province with a fairer way of collecting taxes that it will remain the same.

Ask and you shall receive. After amending the Recall Act to make it easier for citizens to collect enough signatures to trigger a recall, Danielle Smith and her government are under attack. Smith becomes only the second Premier and the first in almost 90 years to be targeted by a recall petition; the first being Social Credit leader William Aberhart in 1937.

This after Aberhart’s government passed the Legislative Assembly (Recall Act) in 1936 to hold representatives accountable between elections. Not long after, Aberhart’s government repealed the act.

Fast forward to today and the revived Recall Act is now being utilized once again. Jason Kenney who ran on introducing the Recall Act once again passed the law in 2021. At least he kept an election promise. Following a rush of recall petitions in recent weeks, Kenney, said it’s being misused as its intent is to address serious ethical breaches rather than resolve policy disputes.

leftwing activists are “weaponizing” its own legislation against it, petitioners say they’re just regular folks unhappy with the way things are going in a province where the measles are making a comeback. However, I suspect there is more to it than that. One site providing a running tally and information on how to conduct a recall states they are two private citizens without any outside funding or affiliations. One has to wonder however if they are card carrying members of any organizations that are not aligned with the UCP. Their site operationtotalrecall.ca clearly states they are focused on MLAs who voted to use the Notwithstanding Clause.

I wonder if these same groups were as up in arms with the convoys and the related seizing of bank accounts related to activities or donations surrounding those events.

The Elections Alberta web site lists 20 recall petitions which have been approved and in progress, many of which are close to home. The Total Recall site lists the same 20 with another four indicating that paperwork has been approved or submitted including one for our very own Hon. Jackie ArmstrongHomeniuk. Not to be partial, it seems that the site also lists every other MLA in case someone wants to get in on the action.

Jacqueline Lovely to the south of us for our readers along highway 14 is the subject of a petition that is under way and requires 12,391 signatures. The required signatures needed is based on the total number of votes cast in the most recent election in the electoral division named in the recall petition. That number is 60%.

For Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, the petition will require 14,688 signatures. All signatures must be collected within the 90-day recall petition signature period.

What are valid reasons to recall a Member of the Legislative Assembly? Well… There is no set criteria. The only requirement is that the applicant provide a statement of 100 words or less on why, in the opinion of the applicant, the member should be recalled.

That seems a little like political karma if you ask me. I’m continually amazed that the entire brain trust of various governments can’t cobble together better legislation and contracts. It’s baffling to think that not ONE person involved may have thought to themselves…. “oh look… back in 1937…” and put some reasonable criteria to at least start the process. Nope…100 words maximum and a refundable $500. That’s a pretty low bar.

As this circus plays out, we all shoulder the load. Estimates ranging from $6.7M to $10M under the current situation are on the table to fund Elections Alberta in their management of the recalls. I guess we have to turn down the heat a little bit more.

There were plenty of gifts and baked goods created with a special and original touch to choose from the nine vendors at Vegreville Farmers’ Market Second Special Christmas Market on December 12 at Vegreville Elks Hall.

Manager Marlene Giebelhaus noted that this sale is meant to have people support and shop local. “We host this to have people come in and get their Christmas goodies; some people don’t like to bake, while others want to buy a homemade

gift. Also, the last Christmas one will be our final market of the season till the end of March.”

There were a few new vendors. Amanda Antonchuk was from Designs and Creations by The Twisted Sisters. Amanda shared that they have been making sublimation and vinyl t-shirts and hoodies for five years. “It started as a hobby, to have something to do when I was bored, as I am a stay-at-home mother.”

Diane and Frank Skinner were selling crafts, gnomes, and baked goods. Diane has been making these for 30 years. “My

favorite part about baking is when people come back and say how much they enjoyed eating it.

The smaller gnomes take me about an hour and a half to create, and the larger ones take longer.

Frank helps me wrap up the packages, put the labels on, do the shopping, and wash the dishes.”

90 Years Ago – December 25, 1935

Boxing Day, December 26th, was declared a statutory holiday in Alberta under an order-in-council passed by the provincial cabinet today. By this order, said Premier Aberhart, all businesses and activities that are closed on usual holidays will be closed on this new holiday.

A striking tribute to the value of Sunday school work was paid by a judge of the Juvenile Court who stated that among those convicted of the crime, children in attendance at Sunday school are seldom represented. This is as it should be and the Sunday school plays a much larger part in the development of moral character than merely preventing crime. Its efficiency will be greatly increased if parents will not content themselves by merely sending their children, but will themselves give personal interest and leadership in a service of such undoubled value.

The Alida Women’s Institute held its annual meeting on December 18th. The following officers were elected for 1936: President – Mrs. R. Jonas; 1st Vice-President – Mrs. G. Shaw; 2nd Vice-President – Mrs. G. Johnson and Secretary-Treasurer – Mrs. G. T. Cole.

75 Years Ago – December 20, 1950

Characters who drown their sorrows in the Alberta Hotel pub will be living in the proverbial lap of luxury after the new year, with the completion of the remodeled and enlarged mixed drinking lounge.

The old sample rooms have been done away with to accommodate thirsty Vegrevillians, and new ones will be made (sample rooms) behind the hotel.

High School contractors certainly aren’t letting any grass grow under their feet – or should we say snowfall under their bulldozers.

Construction gangs were hard at work last Monday night clearing trees and brush for a path and playground.

The birds receive the largest number of gifts in Sweden. Each family places a sheaf of grain on a pole or on the fence posts for the birds’ Christmas dinner.

Spanish children place their straw-filled sleeves on the window sills so the Magi may feed their horses while they leave gifts. The older people fill an Urn of Fate from which the gifts are drawn on Christmas Day. The children of Switzerland have their gifts brought to them by a radiant angel who rides in a sleigh drawn by six reindeer. She brings them goodies to eat as well as toys.

50 Years Ago – December 18, 1975

A new horizontal traffic light was installed on the west end of the Main Street, Highway 16 intersection, last week. The old vertical light was knocked down when a Turner Valley Transport Truck was traveling west through town.

Project Cooperation funds for the grant year, 1974, were presented to representatives of the County of Minburn by local Recreation Parks and Wildlife representatives. Around $19,400.00 in capital grant money for recreation boards was presented to Reeve, Art Roland, and George Grabas, Chairman of the County of Minburn Regional Board by Sheila Scrutton.

A man received a slashed wrist and bruises when a CPR Railiner and a water truck were involved in a collision at the railway crossing by Warwick Road.

Visitation night for the Vegreville Jaycees was held in Vegreville.

Vice-President of the Canada Jaycees, Bruce Fenwick, was in attendance and explained the ideals and goals to be achieved by Jaycee members. In addition, Mr. Fenwick inducted two new members into the Vegreville Jaycees. The two are Harry Biglands and Bill Pooke.

The Cow Palace was opened for skating over the weekend and will accommodate the overflow of skaters and hockey players from the Recreation Centre, stated the Recreation Centre manager.

50 Years Ago – December 19, 2000

Sunday afternoon was a Christmas treat to remember for a few seniors from Vegreville. This year, Vegreville FCSS offered a bus trip to all seniors interested in attending the Rotary Club’s Christmas Carol Festival and viewing Christmas lights around town.

Work will likely begin in the spring on a $1 million modernization of St. Mary’s School in Vegreville.

Lorne Goodwin, Chairman of the Rotary Peace Park Society, received a $500 cheque from ATCO Electric presented by Craig Korzenowski. The society operates Peace Park, which is located on Vegreville’s east side.

Vegreville Legion president Brian Henderson and Bingo chair Carol Mock presented Food Bank president May Binfet with a $500 cheque to purchase items for the Food Bank.

Vegreville Kinette Club past President Peggy Sawchuk presented a $500 cheque to St. Marin’s Kindergarten. Fundraising Committee members Lydia Pawluk, Dianne Tuck, Cindy Yakimetz, Brenda Kuzyk, and Sherry Beaudette accepted the donation.

Eugene Rudyk of St. Joseph’s Hospital accepted a $1,000 cheque from George and Marian Wengreniuk for use in purchasing an electric bed for the Palliative Care area of the Hospital. Rudyk also noted that the Lavoy Ukrainian Catholic Church has also recently made a donation of $3,000 towards the Palliative Care area of the hospital.

Time for Canadians to Bank on Canada Post Simon Enoch and Ryan Romard Tory Media Contributors

Cuts won’t save Canada Post and mail won’t pay the bills. But adding banking services at post offices might turn things around Canada Post is “effectively insolvent”. That’s how the CFO of the crown corporation describes its current financial crisis. And this isn’t just due to falling mail volume.

It’s insolvent because the corporation’s management refuses to do what successful postal services have already done: build a full postal bank that actually makes money.

In November, the corporation, which has posted operating losses every year since 2018, including a $748-million loss in 2023, submitted a “comprehensive transformation” plan to the government in its effort to move from cash-strapped to solvent. While few details are public, other national postal services facing the same pressures have already shown what works.

The most successful postal systems no longer depend on letter mail. In Canada, letter-mail volume has fallen by more than 60 per cent since 2006, and the old model simply doesn’t pay the bills. Other countries adapted.

Canada Post didn’t.

Post Italiane, Italy’s postal service, earns only 13 per cent of its revenue from mail and parcels, with most of its income coming from banking and financial services.

More than 70 countries offer some form of postal banking. In short, postal systems elsewhere survive because they treat banking as a core service.

Which raises an obvious question: why ignore an approach that works almost everywhere else? Canada is late to this shift but not too late to learn from it.

Canada once operated a national postal bank. From 1868 to 1968, the Post Office Savings Bank served nearly one million Canadians at its peak. Yet today, postal banking rarely gets serious attention, even though it reliably generates revenue in other countries. That reluctance helps explain why the corporation remains stuck in deficits.

So what would a modern Canada Post Bank actually deliver?

We modelled how a Canada Post Bank could perform today using data from Canadian banks and large credit unions. The numbers point in the same direction as international experience: postal banking works. And it is useful to compare its likely size with institutions Canadians already know.

A postal bank holding 2.5 to 3.5 per cent of all customer deposits in Canada, roughly $94 billion to $132 billion, would be larger than most credit unions but far smaller than the Big Five banks. With more than 6,000 post offices, many in communities that no longer have a bank branch, the corporation could offer lower fees, reach under-banked Canadians and still make money. Its scale would make it straightforward to run and expand.

Since 1990, more than 1,200 bank branches have closed in rural and low-income communities, pushing many people toward payday lenders. Canada Post will not reach a sustainable future if it focuses only on cuts and closures.

The payoff would be immense. In our most realistic, optimistic scenario, a Canada Post Bank would generate $1.4 billion in net revenue. That would erase the corporation’s operating deficit and fund improvements to services. Instead of managing decline, Canada Post could plan for the future.

A serious plan would invest in banking and financial tools communities actually need, especially in places long underserved or targeted by high-cost lenders. With so many public and private services withdrawing from inner cities and rural areas, turning post offices into community hubs with essential services such as banking would show that these communities still matter in national planning.

Canadiens Edge out Rangers Bob Burke

The Vegreville Rangers and the St. Paul Canadiens clashed Wednesday Dec. 10 at the Wally Fedun arena in Vegreville. The game was a defensive battle that provided limited scoring chances.

Early on Jager Fontaine had an opportunity to open the scoring but Vegreville starter Riley Warawa was equal to the task and turned the shot aside. Warawa also made a nice save on a close in chance for Mason Benko. The Canadiens’ Kayden Morrison broke free on a breakaway 8 minutes into the period but his shot found the post and the game stayed scoreless.

Ranger’s d-man Logan Bork had a good chance shortly after but Canadiens’ starter Cale Rupp was able to turn the shot aside.

Canadiens’ forward Quinn Szpak fired a high shot that Warawa made a shoulder save on but Kolby Miller found the rebound in the ensuing scramble and opened the scoring with just 1:37 left in the first period. Liam Boyko was credited with the only assist. Vegreville replied just 42 seconds later when Brody VanEngelen took a pass from Ashton Butz to tie the game.

A shoving match behind the net resulted in the first penalties of the game being called just over two minutes into the second period with Landon Track and Cooper Saville receiving roughing and crosschecking minors respectively. Jacob Labant had a

scoring chance mid period but was again stymied by Warawa.

Warawa used his head to turn aside a shot by Quinn Szpak that rattled off of his mask.

A beautiful passing play put the Canadiens up 2-1 at the 4:20 mark with Quinn Szpak finding the net on the pass from Kian McLeod for the only goal of the middle frame. Jacob Labant had the second assist. Vegreville had a strong pushback controlling most of the play during the second half of the period hemming the Canadiens in their own end much of the time but couldn’t solve Cale Rupp who had a strong game when called upon.

Quinn Szpak scored his second straight goal during the power play at the 7:21 mark of the third, with Cooper Saville serving a tripping minor, to increase the St. Paul lead to two when he managed to squeeze a shot between Warawa’s arm and body that managed to trickle across the goal line. Assists went to Jager Fontaine and Connor Johnson.

Vegreville’s Landon Olson got the Rangers back within one netting a power play marker with 4:26 remaining in the third period. Carter Ogrodnick and Lukas Myshaniuk had the helpers on the goal. Vegreville pulled Warawa with over two minutes left and St. Paul had three excellent opportunities to score the insurance marker but all three failed to find the open goal.

Another frustrating outing for Vegreville who outplayed St. Paul and had a significant advantage in shots registering 46 attempts to St. Paul’s 26 but many were from long range as St. Paul defenders did a good job clogging up the middle of the ice and Cale Rupp coming up big when he needed to make crucial saves.

VWF Will Compete in 2026 Games Vegreville Wildlife Federation Submitted Our local Vegreville Wildlife Federation (VWF) is sending youth archers and coaches to the 2026 Alberta Winter Games held in Bonnyville/ Cold Lake in February 2026.

Six of our VWF youth archers, along with the VWF archery coaches, headed to Lloydminster for the Winter Games Zone 7 trials – held on December 2, 2025, to compete for spots on the recurve and compound team spots. After shooting a 600-round score, the team was named with all six VWF Archers making the team, along with some youth from the Lloydminster area.

In addition to our own local archers, the Vegreville Wildlife Federation is also providing the coaching staff for the Zone 7 archers as well. VWF Archery Coach (and VWF President) Jamie Lowes and VWF Archery Coach Layne Lowes will be attending the Winter Games with the team as head coach and manager.

The VWF archers have been training

for the trials since October. For some of the archers, this was the start of their archery journey – and for our other local archers, this will be their second Winter Games performance. The archers are excited about the possibility of bringing home some medals for our Zone. They are practicing multiple days a week to prepare for the competition.

Greg Pyle Steps into Role of Fire Services Coordinator Michelle Pinon News Advertiser

It has only been a short time since Greg Pyle stepped into the position of Fire Services Coordinator for the County of Two Hills, but he seems right at home in his new role that began this fall.

Pyle said both he and his family are thrilled to officially call the County of Two Hills home. Pyle was hired on in late August and is very excited to be of service. “It is an honour to step into this vital role for the County of Two Hills.”

He has extensive hands on business management experience as well as serving with his local fire department. In terms of his primary focus since taking on the role, Pyle said, “My primary focus is to honour the dedication of our volunteer members while advocating for

Whether our members are on the frontline, serving as drivers/operators, dispatchers, traffic control, or scene command they are all valued members of the team.

With over 90 members across the County, the departments have done an excellent job with recruitment and retention. Many of our department officers will be attending a Fire Service Bootcamp this February in St. Paul.

This course will include Values-Based Leadership & Culture Building, Strategic Decision Making, Community Risk Reduction and more.”

Pyle noted, “The years of service in our Community Fire Departments is remarkable. Myrnam Fire Chief John Fedoriuk, (37 years of service) and Assistant Fire Chief Brad Straty, (39 years of service) recently received their 35-year Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association (CVFSA) Municipal Long Service Award Medals.”

Andrew Rural Academy Board Working to Address Concerns Michelle Pinon News Advertiser

Members of the Andrew Rural Academy (ARA)board of directors are working to address concerns put forward by parents and community members.

Those concerns were initially outlined in a Nov. 27 letter written on behalf of the Concerned Parents Coalition (CPC) following the Nov. 18 board meeting. Those concerns included: hot lunch program, website and general communication, transparency, strategy and direction, and board competence.

Spokesperson for the CPC, who requested anonymity, said individual parents and community members had attempted to get answers on specific topics or arrange opportunities to speak to school leadership in the past. “Often, we were not able to do so in a straightforward manner. Then, in October, the school board began making decisions with little or no communication.

At that time, we started speaking to each other where we sharing common concerns.

The tipping point was the November board meeting where a number of important questions were raised and the board was unprepared, evasive and adversarial. It just seemed like a good solution to come together to take a collective approach.”

In terms of the hot lunch program, CPC stated that parents were promised daily free hot lunches, and were notified in the school newsletter just days before of the change to two days per week. That was later increased to three days a week.

Board Vice Chair Kylie Rude said, “The hot lunch program was reduced to three days a week in November with notice provided to parents about one week prior to the change.” She added, “The nutrition grant

that was budgeted to fund this program has not been obtained to date as expected, and we are unsure as to the status after numerous inquiries…This was a tough but necessary decision to ensure the long-term success of the school. To provide a compromise, parent council has begun running an affordable canteen/concession on the days hot lunch is not provided. Most items are under $3. It is completely volunteer run.”

Updates have been made on the ARA website regarding board member’s contact information, and Rude said they will continue to update the website. She also noted that board information is included in each newsletter and the school’s secretary will share contact information at any time.

The board is actively recruiting for a Superintendent following the resignation of Joey Bouchard. Parents were informed of that decision on Nov. 27. Board Chair Jason Tkachuk stated that Bouchard was fully qualified and in good standing with the province as there had been assertions that Bouchard did not have Bachelor of Education Degree. While Superintendent qualifications are extremely specific, Tkachuk has been in regular contact with both the provincial government and The Association of Alberta Public Charter Schools.

Stan Zabrick served in the capacity of project manager and then treasurer for ARA, and was relieved of his duties in mid-November. The News Advertiser reached out to Zabrick for comment, but he declined that offer. Tkachuk stated, “We cannot comment on matters pertaining to Mr. Zabrick.”

Tkachuk has filled the treasurer position.

Principal Brian Dewar stepped down from his role as principal and has been replaced by Terrance Prusak. Dewar was also contacted by the News Advertiser for comment, but there has been no response to date. Tracy Messer was appointed as Assistant Principal approximately one month ago. Both Prusak and Messer also teach at ARA. Tkachuk said they are currently working with Prusak to implement STEM options and programming, which he admits has been a challenge, but that

Mundare Council Opposes Speed Limit Increase Michelle Pinon News Advertiser

Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors is seeking feedback from municipalities about the possibility of increasing the speed limit from 110 kilometres per hour to 120 km/h on select divided rural highways.

One of the select divided highways under consideration was Highway 16 from Hinton to Lloydminster. Mundare town council members were adamant during discussion at the Dec. 2 regular meeting that no increase of speed limit be made at all. Mayor Rick Patrie remarked that there had been two fire calls at that intersection in the past week.

According to a Nov. 13 letter from Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors, the other divided highways under consideration are: Highway 1 from Banff to the Saskatchewan border

Highway 2 between Edmonton and Calgary Highway 3 divided portions Highway 4 from Lethbridge to the United States Border Highway 63 north of Highway 55 to Fort McMurray and then north of Fort McMurray, approx. 270 kilometres Highway 43 west of Edmonton to Grande Prairie Council did not provide any feedback on these other divided highways identified in the proposal.

Charlie Gargus, Deputy Chief of the Lamont County Emergency Services (LCES) Mundare Station introduced himself to the new members of council as well as provided an update. Gargus told council they have a number of recruits and are now handling call outs.

Maintenance of the hall is being kept up. While there was a proposal for a new fire hall a couple of years ago, Gargus said that probably isn’t realistic, but is hopeful a new bay could be added onto the hall to accommodate equipment and help with storage.

Patrie told Gargus the town had just purchased the two vacant lots adjacent to the fire hall. Zyla said the town purchased each lot for $20,000.

Also in attendance as a delegate was Al Antoniuk, who was seeking compensation for work that he had been completed at one of his residential properties on Main Street. Chief Administrative Officer Colin Zyla said that a couple of years ago there was a sewer backup on Antoniuk’s property and the town couldn’t get cutters or a camera down there to see what was happening. Zyla said Antoniuk had dug up the sewer line from the house to the sidewalk and replaced that portion.

Once that work was done, Zyla said they used a camera and took a video and found place under side-

walk where roots coming in from a tree. We had a meeting and Mr. Antoniuk was asked to bring some expenses and stuff, but we didn’t get anything until now.

Public Works Foreman John Bruyere said they had cut the roots on Nov. 17 and took a video showing that the roots were gone. Zyla told Antoniuk he could set up a time for him to view the video. Zyla also said relining of that sewer line will be in next year’s budget. Zyla said council would have to decide what to do in respect to maintenance in the future.

Zyla said he would have to review the expenses and then present those at the next meeting of council on Jan. 2. Antoniuk said he couldn’t wait because he would have to file a statement of claim before then because of a statute of limitation and suggested council hold a special of meeting to deal with the issue.

Patrie said there was a process in place, and that it would cost $196 per council member to attend a special meeting, which he was not prepared to do. Patrie said they had been waiting two months for Antoniuk to submit his bills, and Antoniuk said he hadn’t because he was waiting for the town to remove the tree roots from the sewer line. Antoniuk said he would let his lawyer deal with the issue from now on.

Council adopted its interim budget and borrowing bylaw as well as two policies regarding signing authority and hours of operation.

Council was also advised of the closing of the youth centre that had previously been primarily operated HUB building and more recently, Mundare School with poor and no attendance.

Councillor Jennifer Johner is hoping the town will refurbish the Welcome to Mundare signs. The item was tabled to a future meeting.

Pembina Pipeline Commits $20,000 to Lamont County Food Bank

Pembina Pipeline Corporation has stepped up in a big way to support the Lamont County Food Bank by launching a community-matching campaign in support of the Food Bank’s new building project.

Crystal Topilko, Field Administration OBU Operations, stated, “This initiative reflects our commitment to strengthening the communities where we live and work,” stated Crystal Topilko, Field Administration OBU Operations.

“Pembina is grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Food Bank in this important cause. We invite community members to join us in making a difference. Every dollar donated will be matched by Pembina—up to $20,000—helping ensure families throughout the Lamont County and the surrounding region have access to essential services. Together, we can ensure equitable access to food and resources for families in need,” noted Topilko.

“This contribution from Pembina comes at a crucial time,” said County of Lamont Food Bank Chairperson, Jody Zachoda. “By turning their support into a matching challenge, Pembina is helping us accelerate progress toward a safe, dignified, purpose-built home for the food

bank. Every dollar raised will go directly toward building this much-needed facility.”

Jodie Conley, a longtime resident of the Town of Mundare, and an active community volunteer, commented “we’re thankful to Pembina for their generous contribution to the Food Bank Building Fund. It’s great to see a company operating in our area also giving back and being an active part of the community. Their support makes a real difference for families here in Mundare and across Lamont County.”

The County of Lamont Food Bank has long provided essential support to individuals and families facing food insecurity. Although located in the Town of Lamont, the Food Bank supports residents throughout Lamont County and surrounding region, including the Towns of Bruderheim, Lamont and Mundare, the Villages of Chipman and Andrew, and all rural areas within Lamont County.

In addition to access to food security and programming, each year, food bank volunteers and Lamont County Community Services staff also deliver hampers to clients without transportation, ensuring equitable access across all communities.

The Food Bank currently operates from an aging por-

table trailer provided by the Lamont Alliance Church. The community’s generosity has sustained the program for many years, however the current facility no longer meets operational or client needs. Challenges include overcrowding, limited storage, lack of client privacy, accessibility issues, limited parking, aging infrastructure, and an uncertain long-term tenancy.

To address these concerns, the Food Bank is fundraising to build a new, permanent, purpose-built facility designed to be safe, accessible, inclusive, and dignified.

The new building will feature: • Expanded storage for fresh, frozen, and non-perishable foods; • A private and secure intake office; • Barrier-free entry and client-friendly waiting spaces; • A full kitchen and classroom for nutrition, cooking, and community programs; • Space for partner agencies; • Improved parking and loading areas; and • A stable, long-term home for essential food security services.

Local residents, businesses, service clubs, and organizations are encouraged to contribute. Every dollar donated becomes two dollars through Pembina’s generous support.

During the holidays, you often hear tragic stories of people losing their lives in road accidents involving alcohol and drug use. However, these tragedies can be prevented.

Here are a few simple tips to ensure you and those around you stay safe this festive season.

Even if you feel okay to drive, it's a proven fact that consuming alcohol and drugs — no matter how much — will still impair your judgment. It's best to have a plan of action before you go out. Consider arranging to stay overnight at the party location or assign a designated driver for your group. Other options for getting home safely include hiring a rideshare service or taxi or taking public transit.

Are you a passenger or witness?

If you notice that someone is unfit to drive and still intends to get behind the wheel, speak up!

Let them know it's not okay and suggest alternative options. The same applies if you're a passenger in a group that must share a vehicle. If you're asked to ride with a driver who has been consuming drugs or alcohol, refuse and do everything you can to encourage others to do the same.

When it comes to alcohol and drugs, everyone shares the responsibility to stay safe. As a driver, avoid getting behind the wheel, and as a witness, act.

Everyone can do something to prevent the devastating consequences of impaired driving — including criminal penalties, severe injury and death — by working together.

Be Prepared: It’s widely known that drugs and alcohol impair your judgement. Despite this reality, some individuals who’ve consumed these substances may believe they’re fit to drive when actually they’re not. In short, if you’ve had any amount of alcohol or smoked or ingested cannabis, its not safe to rely on your own judgement.

Here are a few options to consider for a safe holiday season and new year: •Call a taxi.

•Designate a non-drinking person to drive you home.

•Use a designited driver service.

•Arrange to sleep at the party venue or stay somewhere within walking distance.

We started our November meeting with a senior member’s public speaking workshop. Going around the room everyone said one sentence to create one long story. It had a lot of exploding! Everyone’s projects are going quite well even though some have not met yet. They are all bound to have a great time. Many 4H families have donated to our local food bank. Let’s hope it gets to those who need it.

Christmas is approaching and we have our party date and gift exchange planned! Ve are having a gift exchange and while everyone’s parents get old used stuff from other parents, the kids get new fun things because kids rule! Cookies, cupcakes and all sorts of homemade sweets sound like they are coming to this festive event. Public speaking is on the horizon and topics are out and about. This was the first meeting since choosing all our topics and it sounds to be a great year of fun.

Vegreville 4-H Beef Club November Report

Members worked hard and this helps raise funds for future club activities. Members also took part in a few other community events. November 21 members attended the Vegreville Junior B Rangers game for the annual Toy Toss to support families in need. Sooo many items were gathered and delivered to the Vegreville Christmas Bureau. Additionally, on November 28th our club was in the Vegreville Christmas Light Up Parade, where we helped spread holiday cheer and proudly represented 4H in the community. While some members were on the float, other members attended Fall Fling, where there were fun activities and meeting other 4H members from different clubs.

Overall, November was a busy and successful month for our 4H Club.

Our club also got to volunteer at the Vegreville Veterinary Clinic Beef Seminar held on November 13th. Members helped provide dinner and clean tables. But on top of that we got to listen in on some of the presentations. We heard about replacement heifer selection, digestive diseases along with the proper use and selection of implants in beef cattle.

November was the closing of the Cowboy Caviar fundraiser and boy did it do well once again!

During the month of November our 4H Club was very active and involved in many community activities.

Some of our members had the opportunity to attend Farmfair International with their beef animals and some got to show other producers beef animals.

This experience helped members improve their showmanship skills, gain confidence, and learn

The Vegreville Wildlife Federation has a strong archery program ranging from beginners to competitive athletes. The VWF Executive, Archery program, parents, and general members are extremely proud of our young members who have made the team and wish them all good luck.

ZACHARKIW, Harold December 12, 1940 – December 11, 2025 The work is done - the farmer can rest. It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Harold Murray Theodore Zacharkiw of Mundare on Thursday, December 11, 2025 just one day shy of his 85th birthday.

Herald will be dearly missed by his wife of 49 years, Sylvia; daughter Jody; son Trevor and daughter-in-law Cheryl and his most loved grandchildren, Calla, Annabelle, Johnny and Norah; sister Faye (Alvin) Ewanchyshyn; sisters-in-law Marlene (Ron) Solowan and Eleanor (Randy) Cowan; nieces and nephews and other relatives and many friends.

Harold was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Nettie Zacharkiw; parents-in-law John and Rose Batiuk; and brother-inlaw Dennis Batiuk.

A life-long resident of the Mundare area, Harold was most proud of the family farm, and he went there as often as he could, even spending 23 days operating the combine this fall. He operated road maintenance equipment for Lamont County and drove a school bus for over 25 years. He enjoyed camping and was a snowbird in Yuma for 20 winters.

Harold was a friend to many and was willing to lend a helping hand to anyone needing it. He was known most of all for being the candy man, with his pockets full of treats, offering them to anyone who crossed his path.

A Prayer Service will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Mundare, Alberta where a Divine Liturgy will take place on Thursday, December 18, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. with the Basilian Fathers officiating. Interment to follow in the Church Cemetery.

In lieu of other tributes, the family requests donations be made to the Covenant Health Foundation c/o the Mary Immaculate Care Center- Mundare – End of Life Room Project.

HERSCHMILLER, William (Bill) September 5, 1945 - December 14, 2025 Bill passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2025 at the St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Vegreville at the age of 80 years old after being ill for a few months.

Bill has left behind his immediate family: wife Marilyn, daughter Jackie, son-in-law Mohsen, son Clark, daughter-inlaw Bonnie, grandson Brett, partner Owen, and granddaughter Keely, his brothers and sisters: Eva (Earl) Mitchelmore, Tony (Marybelle) Herschmiller, Chris (Bert) Lang, Florence (Peter) Lang, and Ann (David) Vetter, his brother and sisters-in-law: Marlyne (Wayne) Dolinsky, Annette (Bill) Isely, Arlette (Peter) Sabin and Randy (Violet) Sabin, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents: Anton and Agnes Herschmiller; brothers and sisters: Regina (Jake) Ollenberger, Raymond (Dorothy) Herschmiller, Rose (George) Senger, Ben (Marilyn) Herschmiller, Martha (Harry) Veenstra and George (Colleen) Herschmiller, and father and mother-in-law Robert and Dorothea Sabin.

Bill was born in Wilkie and grew up in Tramping Lake, SK. A management position with Federated Co-op brought him to Vegreville where he and Marilyn raised their family. He worked as a home builder and as a truck driver at Alta Wide and UFA. His favourite job was transferring vehicles for Vegreville Ford.

The two things that he really enjoyed in life were sports and family. Sports that he played were bowling, baseball, curling, and mostly hockey. He enjoyed most other sports via the TV, especially watching the Blue Jays, the Calgary Flames and Stampeders, the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Montreal Canadiens. As for family, we were everything to him.

Special thanks to his nurses and doctors that cared for him in and out of the hospital.

The family will be celebrating his life privately. Donations in Bill’s memory may be made to “Alberta Lung Association” or “PTARS” Prairie Tails Animal Rescue Society in Vegreville.

PROKOPIW, Matt Peter It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our adored father, Matt Prokopiw. He passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, December 7th, 2025.

Matt leaves behind his children, Della (Maurice), Daryld (Colleen) and Dawn (Miles); grandchildren, Melissa, Brett, Jared (Amanda), Jonathan (Andrea), Amber (Stuart) and Jesse (Ode); and greatgrandchildren, Jacob, Charlie, Hailey, Harper, Bell and Mehta.

SKOREYKO, Michael James “Mike” With immense sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and gada, Michael James Skoreyko, on December 11, 2025. He then joined his work family at Smoky Lake County and refused to retire as he enjoyed going to work and is remembered in his coveralls, keeping busy and socializing. His humour, kindness, and quiet demeanor will be deeply missed.

Mike’s family would like to thank everyone in their lives who enriched his. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Smoky Lake Health Care Centre who cared for Mike and their support.

Library Assistant Amy Yakimetz said these sessions have been running since last November. They decided to do this activity because there was a request in the community for adult craft programming.

For the opening, Ellen Johnstone played a lovely piano prelude. Following, the Vegreville Youth Ensemble and Women’s Choir performed an uplifting, ‘A Christmas Hallelujah’.

took the audience on an indescribable spiritual journey through narrations and songs, culminating in the Birth of Jesus Christ.

Martha Die, who was in the Cantata, shared that they practiced for about a month and a half. “It was so much fun. It was beautiful! I loved the sound we had from all the different voices coming together and the camaraderie.”

St. John’s Lutheran Church hosted this with the community.

Coordinator Colleen Albert noted that $675.00 was raised last evening for the Vegreville Food Bank, as well as, some food donations.

Albert shared that their motivation for this performance was three-fold.

“Practicing and performing the choral music was a great opportunity for singers in our church and community to come together and share an activity that they greatly enjoy. Secondly, we had an opportunity to both bless the community with some beautiful music and also raise some money for a worthy cause. Finally, we hope that this musical event will serve to shine the light of Christ into our world and help us to focus on Him during this Christmas season.”

Children shouted with happiness, ran around, and played with other kids. While adults socialized freely and laughed at the Festive Vegreville Filipino and Guests Christmas Party at Vegreville Suites on December 14.

There was a large dinner buffet with every type of food imaginable, recorded music, and cultural music performances by attendees, door prizes, games, a kids

dance performance, and an adult dancing time.

As well, both young and old had a chance to have a photo taken with Santa.

Karaoke closed the night, and everyone left with a Christmas present.

Organizer Laura Fae Rarama shared that this is a heartwarming tradition that strengthens community bonds and shares the richness of Filipino Canadian culture. “A Christmas party is a great way to spread joy and festive spirit among friends, family, and colleagues. This

The candles, Christmas decor, and music created a peaceful atmosphere for 70 attendees to grieve freely over any loss, receive comfort, and honour their loved ones who passed, at the Akasu Palliative Care Society Interdenominational Christmas Candlelight Service of Remembrance at the Vegreville Social Centre on December 7.

Initially, everyone was invited to light a candle in memory of their loved one.

There were also prayers, scripture readings, and music performances by Vegreville Handbell Choir, which was directed by Lisa Topilko, a vocal solo by Ashley Ziprick, a piano prelude with Viola BraunFox, pleasant performances by St. John’s Lutheran Choir and Friends directed by Colleen Albert, and Lisa Topilko led the audience in several pieces.

During this afternoon, APCS Chair Charlene Melenka emceed the service and presented a tribute to a friend and an active Akasu member, Barbara Bienvenue, who passed away on August 3, 2025.

“Her involvement in the community and passion for helping others have been greatly missed. The silence from her corner of the table has been noticed, but I do believe she is still supporting us in her heavenly role.”

Speaker Janine Brisebois-That Grief Recovery Lady spoke about how, in December, people are already out of breath from their overwhelming schedules, and beneath all of that, there is a deeper suffering that we are all carrying: complicated family dynamics, strained relationships, disappointments from the year before, financial pressures, and that trauma that altered our lives forever. Now, we have a new label called ‘griever’.

And in the air around us, there is always something that never seems to let us rest, and then comes Christmas.

Brisebois went on to express that when we picture the nativity scene, we often imagine Silent Night, all is calm, all is bright, and perfect serenity. But for most of us, Christmas feels like chaos and exhaustion.

Peace was for them, not for us. But we got it wrong, Mary and Joseph weren’t living in serenity.

They were living through the most unpredictable, most vulnerable season of their lives, a dangerous journey, a desperate search for shelter, a labouring woman giving birth in a building that was built for animals, and to top it off, there is a murderous dictator’s conspiracy to kill their unborn child.

Yet in that mess and confusion, scripture tells us there was stillness and peace. Not because life was calm, but because God was with them.

“If we are honest, isn’t that what we really want and hope for, a stillness that doesn’t depend on circumstances, on Christ himself, present in our chaos?

The same peace that was offered to them is also available to us.”
