Saying goodbye to a special person is always bittersweet!

Webb’s Machinery Ltd. was jam-packed when General Manager Randy Metrunec’s 35 years of dedicated service’s retirement party and open house was held for customers and friends on December 19.

Metrunec initially went to school and pursued the trade as a parts person. He used to farm and wanted to

stay in farming. So, he started with Webb’s Machinery in Vermilion in the parts department, and then went to the service area. “When they brought the company to Vegreville in 2002, the owner, Scott Webb asked me to be the service manager, which I agreed to be.

My time here has been very good. I love the people! I had the best job and staff. The customers were great! I will miss the people the most. Vegreville is just a won-

Lengthy Water Rates Dispute Resolved by AUC Michelle Pinon News Advertiser A longstanding dispute over water rates charged to the John S. Batiuk Water Commission (JSB) by the Capital Region Northeast Water Commission (CRN) has been resolved by an official ruling from the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC).

Decision 29831-DO1-2025 was handed down by the AUC on Dec. 4, 2025.

Vegreville Mayor Tim MacPhee, who sits as Chair of the JSB, reported on the AUC ruling at the Dec. 8 town council meeting.

The Town of Vegreville is one of seven member municipalities which belong to JSB. The other municipalities include: Strathcona County, Town of Bruderheim, Town of Lamont, Lamont County, Village of Chipman, and Town of Mundare. JSB sources the water from EPCOR, through the CRN and then transports it via pipeline to the member municipalities.

As stated in the AUC ruling, “It is hereby ordered that: (1) The Capital Region Northeast Water

Services Commission will submit a compliance filing to this decision by 4 p.m. on January 30, 2026, with respect to the calculation of the final water rates for the John S. Batiuk Regional Water Commission for 2024.

(2) The Capital Region Northeast Water Services Commission will submit a separate application by 4 p.m. on May 15, 2026, with respect to the calculation of the final water rates for the John S. Batiuk Regional Water Commission for 2025.

MacPhee said he received a copy of the AUC ruling on Dec. 4, and expressed relief that the “10-year battle with the Northeast Water Commission” was over.

MacPhee explained that the relationship between the two commissions worked very well until 2015.

“I’ve been in this fight for 10 years. It has been very disturbing and the last couple of years it’s gotten even worse. I’m just happy we can move forward. It’s going to be a long process to untangle everything that was done wrong on their part. But I

would say by June, we’ll have a new water supply agreement, and we should have a new water rate. Eighteen cents per cube is coming off before Jan. 1.”

MacPhee noted that any funds that comes back to JSB following an audit will be returned to the member municipalities.

In terms of water rates for Vegreville residents going forward, Corporate Services Director Meghan Saskiw provided the following information: “The increased water rates are effective for the January consumption which will be billed in February 2026. The flat fee has increased to $8.95 per month at a cost of $51.95 from 2026 Fees & Charges.

Of this increase $5.50 is related to the 15% increase of user fees across the board and $3.40 of the increase is related to the cost of the debenture pulled late 2025 to cover the Forced Main upgrades.

The water consumption cost has increased $0.58/cubic metre from $3.84/cubic metre to $4.42/cubic metre.”

Alberta’s Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure has received a petition application to recall Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk.

According to a Dec. 17 Government of Alberta news release, published on behalf of the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, it was determined that the application met the requirements of Section 3(1) of the Recall Act. Also, named in another petition application was Calgary Cross MLA Mickey Amery. On Dec. 8, petition applications were also approved for Premier Danielle Smith and Ric McIver, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Other previous recall petition applications include 19 other MLA’s.

Petition applicants as well as the MLAs are afforded the right to submit a statement to Elections Alberta regarding the recall petition.

Edwin Laaz, petition applicant and organizer of the citizen-led recall initiative, stated why recall of MLA Jackie ArmstrongHomeniuk was warranted. Laaz wrote: “Jackie ArmstrongHomeniuk fails to represent Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville with the accessibility, accountability and engagement constituents deserve. Residents report unanswered emails, ignored phone calls, and a lack of engagement or presence at critical community discussions. When voters require strong, visible advocacy she remains silent, such as when the government chose to remove citizens rights by utilizing the notwithstanding clause or when supporting the Mature Asset Strategy which shifts orphan well clean up costs onto landowners. Her association with the 2022 essay scandal shows a history of poor judgement. Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville deserves an MLA who shows up, listens and defends those they serve.”

On Dec. 12, the News Advertiser requested a written statement or information regarding the recall petition. On Dec. 15, the News Advertiser received a response from Jess Arsenault, Constituency Manager for Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville, stating: “At this time, we are still waiting on the approval of Elections Alberta for this petition, so we are unable to provide a public comment until it proceeds.”

On Dec. 17, the News Advertiser requested a response from Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk as the official government news

release had been published determining the recall petition application had met the statutory requirements.

On the same day, (Dec. 17) an email containing the same letter issued to the Chief Electoral Officer was sent to the News Advertiser. The letter states: “Representing Fort SaskatchewanVegreville since 2019 is both an honour and a responsibility that I deeply value. In 2023, voters renewed their overwhelming trust in me and the platform I ran on with an even stronger mandate.

Their democratic decision deserves to be respected.

I will uphold the commitments that earned this support while ensuring all voices in our constituency are considered.

My focus remains on doing the work voters elected me to do, advocating for this constituency, and delivering results for all persons of Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville.”

Laaz was asked to elaborate on the concerns outlined in the petition application, which he responded to on Dec. 17. He pointed out that, “This effort is non-partisan and grounded in a desire for accountability, accessibility, and meaningful representation. The recall mechanism exists so constituents have a lawful way to respond when they believe their elected representative is not adequately engaging with the community.”

In regards to timely response to phone calls and emails, Laaz said, “responses are consistently sent by Jackie ArmstrongHomeniuk’s office assistant rather than from Jackie ArmstrongHomeniuk herself, even when residents are raising substantive concerns or asking for clarification on legislation. In many cases, constituents report that their emails and phone calls are left unanswered altogether, contributing to frustration and a sense of being ignored. Many residents also report that their concerns are never directly acknowledged or addressed.”

Additionally, Laaz stated that, “When constituents request meetings with Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, they are commonly scheduled three to four months into the future. This delay means residents are unable to speak with Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk until well after legislation has already been debated or passed, leaving no meaningful opportunity for constituent input.

This year, Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk did not appear to have held constituent meetings during constituency week, which further contributed to the sense that residents lacked access to their

Tis the season. For many people this time of year is a time to kick back a bit, relax and enjoy what December brings… not the cold. Regardless of one’s religious beliefs, people are generally in a good mood. After all, there are extra days off from work, hockey is on TV AND endless holiday themed movies to watch; for instance, Die Hard with Bruce Willis, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase or Home Alone with Macaulay Culkin. From black and white classics to kids themed to action or just wacky, you don’t have to look far to find something that will make you smile.

However, I’ve also realized that I’ve become an eternal optimist. While the Christmas cheer has me feeling particularly pleasant, and I always seem to hold hope for the good in mankind, there is no escaping the news of world events. Unless you are on a self-imposed news blackout you have heard not only about ongoing conflicts around the world, but also recent events in Australia and the USA. Perhaps I’m getting soft as the years tick by, but I routinely wonder (mostly to myself) what the heck is wrong with people?

I saw a video of people discussing things like space exploration and the 3i Atlas comet (or whatever you think it is) and how

no intelligent alien species would every want to make contact with a world like ours. It seems like all we want to do it kill each other. You wouldn’t introduce yourself to a neighbour like that. Mind you these days, many people don’t even look at their neighbours, let alone actually talk to them.

I’m quite comfortable with blaming most of how people act these days with social media. People are used to being in their echo chambers and ranting about various things behind the safety of their keyboard. Then they get out in the real world and suddenly they are challenged or their world view is not what they see in real life. It’s much different than what the algorithm keeps feeding them. It’s like they get outside and realize they don’t have to be so angry and then feel uncomfortable.

Why should how I celebrate ANY holiday affect someone else, their attitude towards me or their level of happiness. Some people really have to understand where contentment and happiness come from.

Albert Einstein At the same time, we are reminded constantly that true evil exists regardless of the technology we use. Maybe it’s just in our nature. I would have to research it, but I think we may be the only species that acts the way we do. Even Santa’s reindeer eventually realized that just because Rudolf was different it didn’t call for being so mean.

I can’t imagine bear holding a grudge for generations or despising someone because they looked different or had a different accent. If that were the case, we would have an annual bruhaha somewhere between the Rockies and Churchill with brown, black and white (polar) bears attacking each other over their differences. In reality, I suspect that they just mind their own business and wouldn’t bother each other if they crossed paths.

Now that I think of it, you don’t have to look far. I’ve seen plenty of white, black, and brown Santa’s too. So like the bears, no bad vibes among the Santas. I’m now curious how many different cultures don the red and white suit to celebrate the season, even if it is not on the basis of religion.

Ahh… if only we could be like the bears. I could even go for some hibernation.

For now though, while I fantasize about hibernating away from people, I suppose I will have to retreat to a warm drink, a blanket and a few good Christmas movies. Tis the season.

90 Years Ago – December 25, 1935

Boxing Day, December 26th, was declared a statutory holiday in Alberta under an order-in-council passed by the provincial cabinet today. By this order, said Premier Aberhart, all businesses and activities that are closed on usual holidays will be closed on this new holiday.

A striking tribute to the value of Sunday school work was paid by a judge of the Juvenile Court who stated that among those convicted of the crime, children in attendance at Sunday school are seldom represented. This is as it should be and the Sunday school plays a much larger part in the development of moral character than merely preventing crime. Its efficiency will be greatly increased if parents will not content themselves by merely sending their children, but will themselves give personal interest and leadership in a service of such undoubled value.

The Alida Women’s Institute held its annual meeting on December 18th. The following officers were elected for 1936: President – Mrs. R. Jonas; 1st Vice-President – Mrs. G. Shaw; 2nd Vice-President – Mrs. G. Johnson and Secretary-Treasurer – Mrs. G. T. Cole.

75 Years Ago – December 27, 1950

Distributing gifts in Poland, at least before the Communists came in, the people called at the parish house on Christmas morning where the priest presented them with “peace wafers,” which symbolized peace on earth, and goodwill to men. The people exchanged Christmas wishes as the wafers were broken and eaten before returning home.

The wild boar has been revered from ancient times and was specially honored at Christmas time, for having taught mankind the art of plowing by rooting into the ground with his tusks.

Black flies in recent years are reported to have caused serious losses among beef cattle in the Prairie Provinces. Research work being done by the Canadian Department of Agriculture’s Division of Entomology at Saskatoon showed that the eggs of the black fly responsible are laid on the surface of the Saskatchewan River in summer and sink to the river bed. Here, they eventually become buried in the sand and winter over there, hatching the following spring. Tests conducted by the Division along the South Saskatchewan River demonstrated that control could be effective with fuel oil solutions of DDT applied in the eater when the black flies are in the larval stages.

50 Years Ago – December 25, 1975

Jerry Liden was voted President of the Vegreville and District Chamber of Commerce for 1976 at their regular meeting. Mr. Liden will take over duties from outgoing president Gordon Miller. Other members elected were Mac Vinet – Vice President and 2nd Vice President Ralph Gorrie.

Kinsmen Nestor Dowhaniuk assisted Santa Claus in handing out treats to the children enrolled at the Vegreville Playschool. Among the children were Kelly Zemlak of Holden and Sabrina Maddex of Vegreville.

A store that opened its doors many years ago is closing its doors at the end of the month. Vera Fedoruk, manager of the Corona Fruit Store was one of the first confectionery operators to introduce the sale of soft ice cream and popcorn and one of the last to sell penny candies. The store was first located in the building next to Service Meats on Main Street and was relocated to the building next door to Linkiewich’s Singer Sewing Centre. Ten years ago, the store was set up in the present location. It first opened its doors in 1937, the same year as the coronation of King George VI. The name of the store was taken, in part, from that historic event.

25 Years Ago – December 19, 2000

Undaunted by bitterly cold weather 38 people participated in the Ken Wilson Memorial FunRun raising over $1,800 for the Christmas Bureau. This was the sixteenth year for the event in Vegreville, said Brian Henderson.

Kinsmen Club Bingo Account Chair Lew Skjonsby presented Christmas Bureau Chair Val Bogan with a $1,000 cheque and Kathy Dmytriw, President of the Kinette Club of Vegreville, presented a $500 cheque to the Christmas Bureau. Accepting the cheque on behalf of the Christmas Bureau was volunteer Lil Lacosse.

An appreciative audience watched as area youngsters performed for their parents and friends. Triple SSS Dance Enterprises held their first annual Christmas Show at the Social Centre showcasing the talents of about 40 students who are learning tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, modern, and hip-hop dancing.

Annette and Jim Schieck, and their children Hannah, Carlin, and Annika celebrate Christmas by combining elements of their German background with present-day Christmas trends. “When I was growing up in Hanover, Germany, we didn’t put the tree until the day of Christmas Eve. Our parents spent the afternoon decorating the tree behind closed doors and we weren’t allowed to see it until 5 or 6 in the evening. The tree would be locked away in the living room until then,” said Annette.

The Climate Argument Against Livestock Doesn’t Add Up Joseph Fournier

Troy Media Contributor Livestock contribute far less to emissions than activists claim, and eliminating them would weaken nutrition, resilience and food security The war on livestock pushed by Net Zero ideologues is not environmental science; it’s a dangerous, misguided campaign that threatens global food security.

The priests of Net Zero 2050 have declared war on the cow, the pig and the chicken. From glass towers in London, Brussels and Ottawa, they argue that cutting animal protein, shrinking herds and pushing people toward lentils and lab-grown alternatives will save the climate from a steer’s burp.

This is not science. It is an urban belief that billions of people can be pushed toward a diet promoted by some policymakers who have never worked a field or heard a rooster at dawn. Eliminating or sharply reducing livestock would destabilize food systems and increase global hunger. In Canada, livestock account for about three per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Activists speak as if livestock suddenly appeared in the last century, belching fossil carbon into the air. In reality, the relationship between humans and the animals we raise is older than agriculture. It is part of how our species developed.

Two million years ago, early humans ate meat and marrow, mastered fire and developed larger brains.

The expensive-tissue hypothesis, a theory that explains how early humans traded gut size for brain growth, is not ideology; it is basic anthropology. Animal fat and protein helped build the human brain and the societies that followed.

Domestication deepened that relationship. When humans raised cattle, sheep, pigs and chickens, we created a long partnership that shaped both species. Wolves became dogs. Aurochs, the wild ancestors of modern cattle, became domesticated animals. Junglefowl became chickens that could lay eggs reliably. These animals lived with us because it increased their chances of survival.

In return, they received protection, veterinary care and steady food during drought and winter. More than 70,000 Canadian farms raise cattle, hogs, poultry or sheep, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs across the supply chain.

Livestock also protected people from climate extremes.

When crops failed, grasslands still produced forage, and herds converted that into food. During the Little Ice Age, millions in Europe starved because grain crops collapsed. Pastoral communities, which lived from herding livestock rather than crops, survived because their herds could still graze. Removing livestock would offer little climate benefit, yet it would eliminate one of humanity’s most reliable protections against environmental shocks.

Today, a Maasai child in Kenya or northern Tanzania drinking milk from a cow grazing on dry land has a steadier food source than a vegan in a Berlin apartment relying on global shipping. Modern genetics and nutrition have pushed this relationship further. For the first time, the poorest billion people have access to complete protein and key nutrients such as iron, zinc, B12 and retinol, a form of vitamin A, that plants cannot supply without industrial processing or fortification. Canada also imports significant volumes of soy-based and other plant-protein products, making many urban vegan diets more dependent on long-distance supply chains than people assume. The war on livestock is not a war on carbon; it is a war on the most successful anti-poverty tool ever created.

And what about the animals? Remove humans tomorrow and most commercial chickens would die of exposure, merino sheep would overheat under their own wool and dairy cattle would suffer from untreated mastitis (a bacterial infection of the udder). These species are fully domesticated. Without us, they would disappear.

Net Zero 2050 is a climate target adopted by federal and provincial governments, but debates continue over whether it requires reducing livestock herds or simply improving farm practices. Net Zero advocates look at a

2026 Budget Approved

Coffee Talks and Council Town Hall Meeting

• Council approved its annual Coffee with a Councillor engagement sessions schedule (two per Division), and directed Administration to also set up a Town Hall meeting in early 2026.

Council Business

- Council received update on its gravel program and mapping of roadway segments re-gravelled in the past three years in preparation for budget discussions.

- Council directed Administration to bring forward amendments to the Land Use Bylaw related to secondary residences and for tourism use, as well as looking into required need for geotechnical and culvert approach studies for property placement.

- Council reviewed its options for Enterprise Resource Planning system replacement (as the current system will no longer be supported) and directed this to be discussed during budget planning.

Front Store Manager Tabitha Cooper shared that there were six kids who participated. “We host this to have something nice for the children to do. It’s fun for them, and for us too.

The highlights were the children’s smiles as they were so excited to grab gifts for people. They enjoyed shopping for others, which was nice to see.”

Lamont County

Highlights from this meeting include: • Council finalized their 2026 Budget.

Highlights include approving the operational and capital budget, and multi-year operating and capital plans - with operating revenues of $28 million, operating expenses of $30.6 million and Capital purchases of $3.6 million.

• The approved budget includes a forecast inflationary assessment increase of 2% and a potential 2% increase to farm and residential tax rates. The final decision on 2026 Tax Rates is finalized in April.

• Approved initiatives include service enhancements, equipment replacement, Emergency Services daytime coverage, succession planning, supporting amendments to the Land Use Bylaw for requested tourism opportunities, and a removal/reduction of snow flag cost for medical and seniors (refunds will be provided to those paid for 2026).

Council Business

- Council updated its Schedule of Fees Bylaw (897.25) to amend for updates to the 2026 Budget.

- Council directed the Reeve to write letters of support for the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Alberta Provincial Council for application funding for Ukrainian Day 2026, and Alberta HUB Skyways Project.

- Council approved a $2,000 grant funding to Lamont High School Foundation to support purchase of a new school bus; $100 to the Lamont Lions Club bingos; and a $100 donation to the Lamont Fish and Game Assoc. fundraising dinner.

Children rushed to sit on the tables when they were told that it was time to make the gingerbread house at the Kalyna Family Resource Network Stay and Play program on December 18.

There were also plenty of free play experiences.

Spoke Programmer Cheryl Sorensen noted that this project was meant to help kids’ fine motor skills, creativity, imagination, and a sense of what Christmas is all about: community and having fun with others.

Killam Wheat Kings Take Down Vegreville Rangers Bob Burke News Advertiser The Vegreville Rangers played home and home games against the Killam Wheat Kings Friday in Killam and Saturday at home. They dropped the Friday night game 9-3.

Saturday night at the Wally Fedun Memorial Arena the Rangers got off to a quick start with Michael Jamieson opening the scoring just 2:27 into the game with assists going to Evan Suchy and Cooper Saville.

Just 27 seconds later they increased their lead to 2-0 on the power play when Ashton Butz got the puck to Bennett Downing who made a beautiful pass to Ryle Dubitz in the slot and he fired it blocker side on Killam starter Valentino Harson.

The Wheat Kings got on the board on the power play at the seven minute mark when Tanner Sheets snapped a shot just under the crossbar on a feed from Ethan Allen with and Brady Parchoma registering the second assist. Killam continued to press and Wheat Kings’ Ethan Allen managed to get the puck behind Ranger’s starter Riley Warawa but it was cleared away before crossing the line. Warawa then was called upon to make consecutive saves on Killam captain Jordan Gagnon to preserve the one goal lead.

Harson made a nice save at the other end on Bennett Downing after a strong Ranger’s forecheck. Ethan Allen scored for Killam on a breakaway with a shot over Warawa’s glove to notch the score at 2-2 with 5:41 remaining in the first.

Warawa made a spectacular pad save on Jordan Gagnon off a rebound with four and a half minutes left. Warawa then made back to back outstanding saves two minutes later to keep the score tied going into the second period.

The Wheat Kings would take their first lead just 15 seconds into the second when Ethan Allen netted his second goal of the

game after taking a pass from Brady Parchoma. Dylan Kruchten increased the lead to two when the puck came out of a scrum right onto his stick and he fired it home.

Warawa, who was busy all night facing 53 shots, made six consecutive saves during a strong Killam push and another outstanding pad save on Allen a minute later.

With 6:45 remaining in the second the Rangers pulled within one, 4-3, when Ryle Dubitz scored on a beautiful backhand up high on Harson with assists going to Ashton Butz and Owen Stemberger.

That was as close as the Ranger’s would come.

Harson stopped Owen Stemberger with a nice blocker save before turning aside Brody VanEngelen with a nice pad save. Ethan Allen made a nifty between the legs pass to Tanner Sheets for a pointblank chance but Warawa turned it aside with one of his 44 saves.

A short time later Vegreville’s Ashton Butz set up Ryle Dubitz for a great scoring chance but Killam’s Harson got a shoulder on it.

Owen Stemberger had another glorious chance from the right faceoff dot but Harson, who had lost his stick, made an exceptional glove save.

Ethan Allen scored with a quick one timer from a face off that eluded Warawa and put the Wheat Kings up 5-3. Vegreville had several chances on a late power play but couldn’t find the net and the second period ended with Killam ahead by two.

With the Vegreville power play extending into the third Brady Parchoma made a nice feed to Bennett Downing but he couldn’t beat Harson just as the penalty expired. Killam started to press and Jordan Glasier was stymied twice in quick succession on passes from Keegan McArthur and then Dylan Krutchen with Warawa shutting the door.

Jordan Gagnon finally notched a goal with a beautiful shot 5:57 into the third to put the Wheat Kings up 6-3 with the assist to Keegan McArthur.

Ethan Allen completed the hat trick on a nice deflection set up by Chance Reum and Brady Parchoma for 7-3 advantage.

Dylan Kruchten made it 8-3 displayed some nice hands, elevating the puck into the top of the net from in close at the 9:10 mark with Jordan Gagnon picking up the assist.

Not long after Vegreville had a golden scoring opportunity when Bennett Downing set up Ryle Dubitz but Harson turned it aside for one of his 33 saves on the night.

Hayden Hogman rounded out the scoring

when his point shot deflected in off of a Vegreville defender. Assists to Reno Sittler and Jordan Gagnon to make the final score 9-3.

As the buzzer sounded to end the game Vegreville’s Noah DeSmet and Killam’s Chase Rombough found themselves helmetless behind the Killam net and got into a spirited fight. Both landed some good punches but DeSmet landed more with more accuracy.

Another disappointing loss for the hometown boys who drop to 1 and 24 on the season.

Among all the fireworks show, the one in Tivoli Gardens is considered as the best. In fact, it has a five day extended fireworks festival, beginning after the day of Christmas, and going on till the midnight stroke on New Years Eve. Experimentarium is also popular for it’s about half an hour fireworks show.

Most of the traditions followed during New Years Eve in Denmark, seem to be standing on a humorous side. Thus, people pleasantly observe them with an element of fun. Among those many traditions, there is one most prominent and pleasurable tradition. If one finds broken dishes at one’s threshold, one might feel odd and bad.

But, an exact opposite feeling is felt in Denmark, if same occurs on New Years Eve. People save dishes all through the year, to only throw them at the doors of their friends and neighbors on New Years Eve. The more one’s door gets struck by the broken dishes reflects that one has many friends in life, and many of those friends love and like him.

It is exciting to see how people from other places see the birth of Jesus in the manger! Fifty attendees explored the display of over 200 creches and nativities from more than 25 countries at the Anglican and United Church Ministries Fourth Annual Nativity Festival on December 12 and 13.

There were also holiday displays of angels and nutcrackers, refreshments, impressive Christmas music performed by Ellen Johnstone, Companions on the Journey, and a visit with Janet Julian Hopchin aka Mrs. Claus,, as well as a collection of food and cash for Vegreville Food Bank.

KOLISNIAK, Walter May 23, 1934 - December 18, 2025 With deep sorrow and much love, we mourn the passing of Walter Kolisniak on December 18, 2025, at the age of 91.

Walter will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed by his wife of 69 years Florence; his daughter Karen, daughter-in-law Jackie, son Craig (Elizabeth); grandchildren Brayden, Jordan (Christina) and Lane; step-grandchildren Sarah (Bart) and Paige; and great grandchildren Jack and Kailer. Jack and Kailer adored their Gido.

Walter was predeceased by his son Clarence; son-inlaw Bill; parents Andrew and Elana; brother Orest; sisters Ann, Mary, Olga, Rosie, Sophie, Justine, Zenovia, and Victoria; brother-in-law Max and Edward; and sister-in-law Linda.

Walter was born in Musidora, Alberta. After working on the farm with his Dad, he took over and successfully ran the bulk fuel dealership in Two Hills for 35 years.

Walter was an entrepreneur in many business ventures and enjoyed farming with his brother, Orest.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Autumn Rose Funeral Home, 5036 - 51 Avenue, Vegreville AB with Archpriest Dr. Timothy Chrapko officiating. Interment to follow at the Two Hills Community Cemetery. Fellowship will take place at the Two Hills Seniors Center following the burial. As 2025 comes to a close, MLAs have wrapped up a productive fall legislative session and passed 14 laws focused on making life better for all Albertans.

Just a few of the highlights include strengthening health care to help ease pressure on our healthcare system, empowering Albertans with disabilities through expanded opportunities to work under the Alberta Disability Assistance Program, protecting children from making irreversible decisions at a young age, and preserving fairness and safety in competitive sports.

Outside the Legislature, Premier Danielle Smith signed a historic energy agreement with the federal government. This landmark deal lays the foundation for a new pipeline, will double oil exports to Asia, and removes damaging federal legislation like the emissions cap and Clean Electricity Regulations.

We’re also moving quickly on 15 recommendations from the Sand and Gravel Task Force’s final report. With over 1,000 active sand and gravel pits across Alberta, operators have faced slow approvals and confusing rules for years. Our government is implementing reforms to modernize policies, streamline approvals, and strike the right balance between economic growth and environmental protection.

Modernizing Alberta’s approach to sand and gravel is just one more way we are cutting red tape, safeguarding our environment, and securing prosperity for generations to come.

This is my last column before we settle in with our families and loved ones to celebrate this magical time of year. Christmas is a chance to slow down, take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and fill our homes with the joy and light that only

the season brings.

Christmas is also a wonderful reminder of the incredible community spirit that defines Alberta. We’re a province of compassionate, community-minded people whose generosity truly shines brightest during the Christmas season. I’m always inspired by the kindness of my fellow Albertans over the holidays. It’s what reflects the true meaning of Christmas and the values that make our province such a special place to call home.

This holiday season has already brought some especially cold weather to our region, but it also reminds us of the warmth we find in time spent together. From Advent services to family dinners, these moments keep our souls warm and make this season so special. I hope you stay cozy with loved ones this Christmas and enjoy the family traditions that make this season so meaningful.

A local accomplishment was stated by Fortune Minerals as they have finalized the purchase of their Alberta refinery site in Lamont County, marking an exciting step forward for the region. The planned critical minerals processing facility will benefit from Lamont County’s strategic advantages, including room to grow, dual rail access, targeted tax incentives and a new process water intake. This investment strengthens Lamont County’s position as a top destination for large scale industrial development in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland and will generate important non-residential tax revenue that supports long term municipal sustainability and future industrial growth.

Finally, thank you for the trust you’ve placed in me, serving this community is an honour and a responsibility that I treasure, and I look forward to keep working hard for you in 2026. This Christmas, I pray for peace, joy, and hope for you and your family.

Staff from RONA Vegreville have been busy with endeavours to generate funds for Vegreville Food Bank, as well as help the community have fun this holiday season.

Vantage Builders Ltd. Design Lead/Partner Dayton Gegolick shared that they raised $2,000 by selling tickets for the chance to win a pair of seats in row three to the Oilers vs. Bruins game, as well as generating an additional $300 + from selling hot chocolate at the Vegreville Light-up parade.

It was a time to honour the students and appreciate the people who made their achievements possible at the St. Mary’s Catholic School Annual Awards Night for the 2024-2025 term on December 12.

Principal Jim Salsbury welcomed everyone to the ceremony and said they are very proud of all the students. “Each of you is important to us, and we are committed to supporting you every way we can.”

Assistant Principal Tiffany Tomlinson noted that we are reminded that our strength, our purpose, and our growth all began by staying rooted in Christ. As followers of Jesus, we are called to reflect His love in how we care for and uplift one another.

As a Catholic School, we recognize God as the source of our life, talents, and all the gifts we are blessed with.

Trustee Ira Borromeo expressed that it is a great honor for him to be there, representing the Elk Island Catholic School Board of Trustees.

Borromeo went on to state, “Our division theme this year - Growing Together in Christ’s Love - is not just a beautiful phrase; it is the living heart of our Catholic education system, and the very foundation of this school community. It reminds us that education is a journey of faith, compassion, and shared purpose. As we learn, serve, and support one another, we strengthen the bonds that make our school a place where every student is valued, every family is welcomed, and every staff member plays a vital role in nurturing the spiritual and personal growth of our children.”

The award presentations were next where the recipients were for Religious Students: Kira Konovchuk, Tamika McEwen, Mariia Polishchuck, Claire Pasay, Adam Sims, and Isabella De Guzman.

Luke Dinwoodie Club Reporter We had a really fun time at the Vegreville 4-H Multi Club Christmas party. The whole club came together, and everyone was excited to see each other. We played games and laughed a lot. The best part was the gift exchange because everyone brought a present and we all took turns opening them. It was fun to see what everyone got and to share the Christmas spirit. At the end of the party, everyone got a treat bag to take home. It felt nice being together as a big 4-H group and celebrating Christmas with friends.
