Malaysian police said on Monday that two men travelling on stolen passports on board the missing Malaysian airliner were Iranians with no apparent links to terror groups. They identified one as Pouria Nour Mohammad Mehrdad, 18, and said he was probably migrating to Germany, while Interpol identified the other as Delavar Seyed Mohammadreza, 29.

The authorities' statement supports an account by a young Iranian in Kuala Lumpur who told the BBC that he was a school-friend of one of the men. He said the friend and another Iranian

stayed with him before taking the Malaysia Airlines flight, and that they had hoped to settle in Europe. Experts have said the presence of two people with stolen passports on a plane was a breach of security, but is relatively common in a region regarded as a hub for illegal migration. Malaysia's police chief Inspector Gen Khalid Abu Bakar said the younger Iranian was "not likely to be a member of a terrorist

group", adding that the authorities were in contact with his mother in Germany, who had been expecting her son to arrive in Frankfurt.

Speaking in Paris on Tuesday, Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble said the two had travelled from Doha on their Iranian passports, and used stolen Italian and Austrian passports to board the Malaysia Airlines flight.

ICKHAM’S

On Friday, I was trying to cross the road in Los Boliches. I was looking to check that there was no traffic coming only to find myself flat on my face in the road two seconds later with excruciating pain coming from my right ankle. A lovely Irishman, whom I didn’t get the name of unfortunately, helped me back up onto my useable foot and into my van. There was a pothole in the tarmac that was almost exactly the size of my foot, my foot got caught and I went forward but my foot didn’t. I am now in plaster from the toes to the knee of my right leg and will be like it for three weeks. So I would like to say a very big thank you to the chap in the blue checked shorts and blue polo shirt that helped me and wish him a very happy St Patrick’s Day. Quite a number of years ago I remember queueing at the boarding gate for a flight and a small man, dressed in black and with a black hat was trying to get on the plane. He had no ticket, passport or boarding pass so how he had got that far was beyond me but, he was so beligerent about having booked his seat and had lost all his paperwork, they let him on! I strongly objected when it came to my turn but to no avail and was in danger of not being able to board myself. I can’t remember which airline it was but my husband and I have never forgotten it. If it was now, I would have refused to board myself and demanded to see security about it. So, seeing the reports of the Malaysian flight on the news, I’m not surprised there were people on it who shouldn’t have been at all. I have now started Cambridge 800 consulting sessions for us all to get in shape for the summer – yes, men too!To join in with my Cambridge 800 regime call me on 663 917 081. I will be holding group sessions or, if you’re more comfortable with it, one-to-one sessions at various times and in various places, so let’s all get a better look for summer. Maybe we’ll all have a party on the beach in July to celebrate our new looks!

None of the debris and oil slicks spotted in the water so far have proved to be linked to the plane’s disappearance. The possible sighting of a yellow life raft was investigated on Monday, but was found to be an unrelated object. Late on Sunday, the Vietnamese authorities said two objects had been sighted in waters south of Vietnam which appeared to resemble aircraft parts, including a door. The debris was in a similar area to a possible oil slick seen by Vietnamese navy planes on Saturday. But civil aviation chief Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said on Monday

that this sighting had never been officially verified and could not be confirmed. Samples of the oil had been collected and sent to a laboratory for analysis to see if it came from the plane, he said. US Navy officials earlier said their aircraft had not seen any debris associated with commercial aircraft wreckage.

The area has been expanded from 50 nautical miles from where the plane had disappeared – over waters between Malaysia and Vietnam – to 100 nautical miles (115 miles). Malaysian Airlines said it was considering the possibility that the aircraft had tried to turn back to an airport at Subang, near Kuala Lumpur, leaving its flight path. Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said officials had not ruled out hijacking as a cause of the plane's disappearance.

On Monday, China said the Malaysian authorities needed to "step up their efforts" to find the missing

jet which had more than 150 Chinese nationals on board. "The Malaysian side attaches importance to the incident with a sincere attitude, but in light of the situation, the Malaysian side needs to step up their efforts," a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman told reporters at a regular news briefing.

Commander William Marks from the US Seventh Fleet, which is taking part in the search, said the search area covered hundreds of kilometres: "Just from the air we can see things as small as almost the size of your hand, or a basketball. So it's not a matter of if we can see it – it's an extremely large area." Investigators are looking at all angles, including a possible terror attack. Counter-terrorism agencies

and the FBI are involved in the operation.

Relatives of the missing passengers have been told to prepare for the worst. They are getting increasingly frustrated, saying they are not getting information in a timely manner. They have also complained that government officials have not visited the families, although Malaysian King Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah offered his condolences to the passengers. He said he and the Queen "would like to express our sympathy to the passengers and crew, especially to their family".

Malaysia Airlines is the country's national carrier, flying nearly 37,000 passengers daily to some 80 destinations worldwide.

U2’s Bono backs Spain at EU

Irish rock star Bono stole the show when he was invited to speak at the European People’s Party Congress in Dublin last week, and received the longest applause from the likes of Angela Merkel and Mariano Rajoy.

The U2 singer spoke about capitalism, the European Union, the troika, Ireland’s bailout, racism against Roma – and Spain. Bono argued that Europe

still had much more to do to get out of the crisis, not just in economic terms, but also in terms of its feelings of unity.

“You’ve got Prime Minister Rajoy just this week urging the EU to make structural reforms that will create liquidity in the Spanish economy,” he said. “Maybe you will. But beyond that, where is the family’s response?” he asked, after comparing the

The rhetorical question surprised – and delighted – the Spanish delegation, whose applause interrupted Bono's speech.

High risk of new Islamist attacks As Madrid prepared to mark the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on a number of commuter trains in the capital on March 11th, 2004, a government agency warned that there is a "high" risk of new Islamist attacks on Spanish soil.

As a result of the report by the National Centre for Anti-terrorist Coordination (CNCA), which answers to the Interior Ministry, the government has activated a level 2 alert. Since the Basque terrorist group ETA announced a "definitive end" to its campaign of violence in October 2011, the law enforcement authorities have focused mainly on Islamists, although they started following Islamist activity in Spain in the 1990s. Since 1995, 472 alleged Islamists have been arrested, although the full extent of the threat did not become apparent until after the Madrid attacks, which killed 191 people and injured more than 1,990. Following Islamist attacks in Casablanca in May 2003, the Guardia Civil warned about the risk of an imminent attack in Spain, but the counterterrorism services were not yet fully aware of the extent of Al Qaeda's presence in the country and were taken by surprise by the March 11th massacre.

The CNCA has reported that today the main threats come from small cells and "lone wolves," who are inspired by the global Jihad as preached by Al Qaeda but have no direct contact with organised terrorist groups. However, the security forces are also concerned about Islamists who return home after a period of training in combat zones, as well as convicted terrorists who are released after serving their sentences. According to

March-11 March 11th attack

police sources, the greatest number of Islamists live in Catalonia, Granada, Valencia, La Rioja and Madrid. But a recent security report has warned the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla – Spanish cities surrounded by Moroccan territory – "have recently acquired an unprecedented importance" for recruiters

of potential terrorists. The average Jihadist arrested in Spain is a male between 25 and 39 years of age, usually married with children. 80 per cent are either Moroccan, Algerian or Pakistani, and 20 per cent have been arrested in the past for common crimes such as drug trafficking.

massacre marked Almost 1,000 people attended the ceremony and Mass held in Madrid's Almudena Cathedral on Tuesday to mark the tenth anniversary of the Madrid train bombings. King Juan Carlos, Queen Sophia and Princesses Letizia and Elena presided the ceremony. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy represented the government together

with Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saez de Santamaria, Justice Minister Alberto RuizGallardón and Interior Minister Jorge Fernández. The victims' organisations held events afterwards, while thousands of people went to the victims' memorial near Atocha station to lay wreaths and flowers.

Barcelona More women on company gets tough on boards pet owners

Barcelona city officials are set to enforce new leashlaws on dog owners and to impose new rules on how long pets can be left alone. Dogs cannot be left unattended for more than 12 hours and cats cannot be left alone for more than three days. Under the current law, dog owners can let their pets loose on the streets as long as they accompany the animal and show that it is obedient. Councillor Jordi Martí said: “The majority of people who have dogs are civilised but there is a minority who are uncivilised." People will also be fined if they are caught feeding pigeons or leaving out food for stray cats.

Other stipulations in the new law include prohibiting Barcelona residents from raising

animals in their homes with the intention of selling them, and feeding wild animals in public spaces.

Under the new rules, residents will not be able to keep pet monkeys or horses within the city limits. City officials also want owners who purchase or adopt a pet to sign a document pledging that they have never mistreated an animal. Those who lie can be charged with a felony. There are an estimated 120,000 dogs in Barcelona but only 30,000 are registered.

Country dropped from EU sick list

the European Commission has removed Spain from its list of European Union member states with excessive economic imbalances but imposed a fresh set of demands on the conservative government of prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to correct persistent problems. in its latest Macroeconomic imbalance procedure (Mip) review released last week, Brussels said: “in the case of Spain, the Commission considers that a significant adjustment has taken place over the last year and that, on current trends, imbalances will continue to abate over time.”

However, it added: “While this is the basis to conclude the imbalances are no longer excessive in the sense of the Mip, the Commission stresses that substantial risks are still present.” one of the major developments in the latest Mip review was the addition of italy to the sick list of EU members alongside recent members Croatia and Slovenia.

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

The Ceuta border will be reinforced with 20 more Guardia Civil officers, a helicopter and anti-climb mesh fencing in the next few weeks, Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz announced at the end of his visit to the enclave last week. The aim is to try to stem what the government has called a "rising tide" of African migrants trying to reach

Europe by jumping the border fences separating Ceuta and Melilla from Morocco. Asked about the possibility of on-the-spot handovers of migrants back to Morocco – illegal under Spanish law – Fernández pointed out that such practices did not occur. During his over seven-hour visit to Ceuta, the minister held meetings

with local organisations, but paid particular attention to supporting the work of the Guardia Civil, which has been criticised for its actions on February 6th, when 15 illegal immigrants died at the Ceuta border crossing after rubber bullets were fired. The minister praised the level of cooperation with Morocco, greeting members of the Moroccan

Syrian rebels free nuns

A group of Greek Orthodox nuns held for three months by rebels in Syria after being taken from their convent in Maaloula arrived back in Damascus on Monday.

The nuns and their attendants, exhausted but apparently well after their ordeal, were brought through a rebel border crossing to the Lebanese border town of Arsal where they were handed over to Lebanese officials and then driven to Syria.

Damascus Governor Hafez Makhlouf was among the officials who greeted the nuns before they were driven to the Greek Orthodox patriarchate. It is believed they were held by the al-Nusra Front, a

jihadist rebel group affiliated to al-Qaeda. Mother Pelagia Sayyaf said the nuns had been treated well. "God did not leave us," she told reporters. "The alNusra Front was good to us, but we took off our crosses because we were in the wrong place to wear them.'' They were freed as part of a prisoner exchange involving some 150 women and children held by the Syrian government.

The rebels had said that they were protecting the women from government

shelling, while Syrian officials had said they were abducted to intimidate the country's minority Christian community. The nuns' plight highlighted the delicate position of Syria's Christians. When the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad erupted in March 2011, many Christians were cautious and tried to avoid taking sides.

Drone used to carry drugs

Police arrested a man on Sunday for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into a prison using a drones. They said the drone had been "hovering in the vicinity of a prison" in Melbourne.

The drone appeared to have "four engines" and was carrying "a small quantity of drugs", police added. The man has been charged with possessing a drug of dependence and attempting to commit an indictable offence. Australia's parliament recently held a roundtable on drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and privacy. During the roundtable, Brad Mason, secretary of the Australian certified UAV operators Association, said there was "a lot of illegal and unauthorised use of UAVs”. 'Dead' drug lord killed

officials said on Monday they have killed a drug lord who was reported to have been shot dead three years ago. Nazario Moreno, known as el Mas Loco – The craziest one – was the founder of the La Familia cartel and regarded as the spiritual leader of its offshoot, the brutal Knights Templar.

His death was first announced after a 2010 shootout, but no body was found and he was reportedly seen alive since. Police said he was finally tracked down and shot dead in Michoacan state. "From a fingerprint analysis we have confirmed 100% that this was Nazario Moreno Gonzalez." Government security spokesman Alejandro Rubido said anonymous tips indicated that Moreno was not only living, but continued operating at the head of a criminal group conducting extortion, kidnapping and other crimes.

Moreno's killing is a second major success for the government's campaign against the drugs trade within a month. in late February, police arrested Joaquin Guzman, known as el chapo or "Shorty". His Sinaloa cartel is believed to be one of the biggest criminal organisations in the world, trafficking drugs into more than 50 countries worldwide.

Up in arms over David rifle ad

culture minister Dario Franceschini has roundly condemned an advertisement by a US weapons firm showing Michelangelo's David holding a rifle. He said the image was offensive and violated the law. A number of italian media web sites carried the ad showing David holding a bolt-action rifle. The advertisement, from illinois-based ArmaLite, carries the line "a work of art".

in a tweet, Mr Franceschini urged the company to withdraw the advert. He said the government will take action against the American company “so that it immediately withdraws its campaign”. The government has copyright on the commercial use of images of David. The marble statue of the Biblical hero was created by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504 and is considered a masterpiece of the Renaissance.

President and cabinet take pay cut

President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that he and his cabinet will take a pay cut to help bring down the government's wages bill. He said that he and his deputy William Ruto would take a 20% cut while other ministers would have their pay reduced by 10%, and foreign trips would be kept to a minimum. Mr Kenyatta also urged Kenyan MPs, who are among the highest paid in Africa, to accept cuts. The issue of politicians' pay is a highly sensitive issue in Kenya. Mr Kenyatta said the government was spending close to $4.6 billion (£2.7 billion) in salaries, leaving only $2.3 billion for development. Mr Kenyatta announced a month after his election a year ago that he would make reducing Kenya's ballooning public sector wage bill a priority. He said it was "unsustainable" and weighed on the national budget.

Kerry rejects meeting with Putin the

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

US Secretary of State John Kerry has rejected an offer of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin until Moscow engages with US proposals to tackle the crisis in Ukraine. Mr Kerry told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that Moscow's military intervention in Crimea had made any negotiations extremely difficult. US officials say there will be little to talk about if the referendum on Crimea's future goes ahead on Sunday. Russia said on Monday it was drafting counter-proposals to a US plan for a negotiated solution to the crisis.

Moscow has condemned Ukraine's new Westernbacked government as an unacceptable "fait accompli", alleging that Russian-leaning parts of the country have been

turned into havens of lawlessness. Meanwhile Russian forces have strengthened their control over Crimea. In a televised briefing with President Putin on Monday, Mr Lavrov said proposals made by Mr Kerry for a negotiated solution to the crisis are "not suitable" because they take "the situation created by the coup as a starting point", referring to the overthrow of Ukraine's pro-Russian President, Viktor Yanukovych.

Meanwhile Nato on Monday announced that it is to deploy

reconnaissance planes in Poland and Romania to monitor the Ukrainian crisis. Also on Monday, armed men – said to be Russian troops and local militias – seized a military hospital in Crimea's regional capital Simferopol, threatening staff and some 30 patients.

Pro-Russian troops are also blockading Ukrainian troops across Crimea, which is an autonomous region. Moscow has officially denied that its troops are taking part in the blockades, describing the armed men with no insignia as Crimea's "selfdefence" forces.

Referendum on New Zeland flag New Zealand is to hold a referendum within three years on whether to change the national flag, Prime Minister John Key announced on Monday.

The current flag shows the Southern Cross constellation and includes the Union Jack – the UK's national flag – in one corner. Mr Key said the flag represented a period of history from which New Zealand had moved on. "The design of the New Zealand flag symbolises a colonial and post-colonial era whose time has passed," he said.

"The flag remains dominated by the Union Jack in a way that we ourselves are no longer dominated by the United Kingdom."

Mr Key said that he liked the silver fern – popularised by national teams including the All Blacks – as an option. Mr Key said there was no move to cut ties with the British monarchy. One poll late last month showed only 28%

of respondents wanted to change the flag, compared to 72% who were happy with the current version.

Representatives of service personnel have argued that troops have fought and died under the existing flag.

$2m in marijuana taxes The US state of Colorado collected $2 million (£1.2m) in taxes from newly legalised recreational marijuana businesses in January.

Colorado was the first US state to legalise the commercial sale of cannabis in 2012, and stores opened for business on January 1st, 2014.

In total, 59 marijuana firms filed tax returns on an estimated $14m in sales.

The money is earmarked for youth drug prevention services, substance abuse treatment, and public health. Many other US states are closely watching Colorado's figures.

Recently, US President Barack Obama said marijuana was no more dangerous than alcohol, while cautioning both were bad decisions.

Currently, 20 US states, as well as Washington, DC, allow for the sale of medical marijuana.

Less day release New bid to clamp down on salty food for prisoners There has long been concern over the amount of salt we eat because it can raise blood pressure and increase the risks of heart attacks and strokes. But finding out how much salt is hidden in the processed food we consume is not easy. All this could be about

to change with the latest bit of technology. The SaltSwitch app will allow shoppers to scan the bar codes of food products so they are able to put less salty and healthier products into their shopping baskets. The free app allows users to scan the barcode

of around 90,000 packaged foods sold across the UK. As well as an aid to shoppers, it is thought the app will act as a deterrent to food manufacturers, who will not want the publicity resulting from any link to the production of unhealthy food.

Britain’s elderly workers of future

Many Britons believe they will be working until they are at least 70 years old and fear a retirement savings crisis, the result of people living longer but failing to put enough aside for old age. But people are now expected to save more in the future towards their retirement with the Government’s new scheme to automatically enrol people into work place pensions.

Co-op CO tenders resignation

Euan Sutherland, who headed the Co-operative Group has sent a letter of resignation to the board yesterday (Tuesday), saying that he was leaving with “great sadness” but believes that the group is “ungovernable” in its present form. The Board may have 48 hours to persuade him to stay according to BBC Business editor Robert Preston but this would depend on whether the regional boards of the group would back his proposals for a radical reform of its structure. The chief financial officer Richard Pennycook will act as the interim boss. Mr Sutherland also declared that he would not accept retention and bonus payments previously agreed on. His resignation comes after reports suggested that the group was recommending a remuneration package worth £3.66 million.

Mr Sutherland, who joined last May, said last month that 2013 had been "perhaps the worst year" in the Co-op's history and it had "lost its way".

Gib drama festival British journalist killed

The San Pedro-based amateur dramatics group International Theatre Studio, is Gibraltar-bound later this month to take part in the 2014 Drama Festival. The annual Festival, which lasts a week, involves various amateur dramatic societies staging short one-act plays. These are subject to adjudication and there is an awards ceremony at the weekend at which the winners of various categories – ‘best play’, ‘best director’, etc – are named. Most competing groups are based in Gibraltar but the I.T.S. will once again fly the flag for the Costa

del Sol. Its choice of play this year is ‘Strictly Sex Factor (On Ice)’, one of a series by David Tristram which charts the misfortunes of an illstarred village am-dram society whose most notable characteristic is a consistent failure to get things right. Its plan to mimic the success of TV talent shows and win back its Saturday night audiences is doomed to hilarious ignominy. The Festival takes place from March 17th to 22nd in the Ince’s Hall, Main Street. More information from: Michael Clarke 952 928 196.

Swedish radio journalist, Nils Horner, who had joint British nationality was shot dead at a busy roundabout in the Wazir Akbar Khan area of Kabul in Afghanistan on Tuesday morning. He died on the way to hospital and his assailant escaped. The Foreign Office said they are urgently looking into reports surrounding the incident and that Mr Horner’s family had been informed of his death. The area where the incident occurred is usually well-policed and is home to a number of foreign diplomats and their Embassies. The Taliban said it was not responsible for the killing, the AFP news agency reported.

A woman who turned up at Walsall Manor Hospital in Staffordshire in labour turned out to be using the identity of another woman. She was in fear of Social Services taking away her newborn – she had already had three children removed from her – and managed to leave the hospital with the baby following the birth. The incident came to light when the woman attended an ante-natal appointment and the doctors notes showed that the woman whose identity she was using had already given birth. She then turned up at the hospital claiming that her notes were with her midwife.

The hospital said that such incidents were “very rare” and the baby had now been taken from its mother and put into the care of Social Services. The trust said that anyone turning up without their notes in future may be prevented from leaving with the child.

The Woodland Trust has announced that three million trees will be made available, free of charge, to schools and community groups to plant in the new Centenary Woods that are being created across the UK.

The four woodland areas that are to be formed, one each in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, will make up part of a £12 million project by the Trust to mark the 100th anniversary of World War One. The woods, that will include the trees and various plants, will all be planted by volunteers and will cover more than 1000 acres overall. The trust said the trees would "transform the landscape into rich, vibrant and flourishing woodland", and prove to be a fitting legacy for those who lost their lives in the 1914-1918 war.

Fifth Winter tapa Route in Marbella Some 60 bars and restaurants will participate in Marbella's Fifth Winter Tapa Route, to be held from March 13th to 16th.

Councillor José Eduardo Díaz said the idea of holding the event so early in the year had arisen in order to help bars and restaurants to get

through the tourist low season, which was even lower because of the economic crisis. A tapa plus drink will cost between €1.50 and $3. To participate, people need to collect a "tapaport" (passport) from any of the establishments taking part in the event or from the Tourism Offices in

Marbella, Puerto Banus and San Pedro. Participants need to get the stamp of the establishments after partaking of their tapas in order to participate in a raffle to be held at the end of the event.

This year, Chef Diego del Rio from the oneMichelin star restaurant El Lago, will preside the jury that will choose the winner of the Most Innovative Tapa Award and select the Most Popular Tapa. Marijuana paradise

The Guadalhorce Valley is now known as "Marijuana paradise" to the Guardia Civil who have discovered some of the province’s biggest marijuana plantations in the area in recent years. It's popular with the marijuana growers because of its many isolated houses scattered along lonely country roads which lend themselves well to the cultivation of the weed.

Just last year alone, the Guardia seized 1,559 plants weighing 624 kilos which had an estimated street value if €3 million. Would-be cultivators be warned, however. The Guardia have stepped up their vigilance in the area, and are checking electricity consumption – the weed needs a lot of light when cultivated indoors.

The judge investigating the ERE case, Mercedes Alaya, has asked the Junta de Andalucia to hand over a series of documents to determine whether its economic commission was aware of the administrative mechanism used to allegedly defraud a fund set up with public money to help companies lay off workers.

Judge Alaya’s investigation estimates that €136 million of public money was siphoned off from the fund over a period of 10 years in illicit payments. Members of the Junta, businessmen and labour union officials are

under investigation. The fund was used to help struggling companies reduce their work forces.

Some €721 million was allotted to the fund between 2001 and 2010, when a more stringent monitoring system was introduced. Alaya has given the Junta five days to hand over the records of parliamentary budgetary approval sessions over the same timeframe, as well as the records of economy commission and tax authority sessions. The judge made her request after several people implicated in the case told her that the mechanism for paying the EREs was

known to politicians in office during the period 2001 and 2010. Last summer, the Junta Premier José Antonio Griñán stepped down in what was perceived as a damagelimitation exercise as it was expected he would be named as an official suspect in the inquiry. Twenty current and former regional

The Local Memo from Voice Madrid

Muriel Pilkington

They're at it again

I

read with horror this morning how the Junta de Andalucia has approved a draft law on "Andalusia's Democratic Memory", which was proposed by the Junta's deputy premier Diego Valderas, of the United Left and a card-carrying Communist. The law intends to "rescue and repair the truth and dignity" of those who suffered repression during the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship. Valderas proposed the law because he feels the Partido Popular government is not doing enough to enforce the Historical Memory Law which the United Left managed to get passed in 2007.

O

nce again a Socialist government is bending to the will of the Communists. The United Left had the Zapatero administration over a barrel from 2004 to 2008, with a little bit of help from the Catalan Revolutionary left, or ERC. Zapatero needed both parties to be able to form a government after the March 2004 election and they gave him a pretty bad time. He had foolishly promised the Catalans during the election campaign to pass the new Statute they were drafting but had to go back on his word when they presented a text that was nothing more than a declaration of independence. He sent it back to them several times until he got a version that wouldn't upset his own Socialist Party or the vast majority of Spaniards who were tired of the Catalans' demands.

S

omething similar happened with the Historical Memory Law – aimed at "righting the wrongs" of the Franco dictatorship – which the United Left presented to him. Under the law, everything to do with Franco – statues, street names, etc. – had to be removed or renamed. One example was a street in Seville, named after one of Franco's generals, which ended up being named after card-carrying Communist Pilar Bardem, the mother of Javier Bardem, who rose to fame as what I can only describe as a soft porn actress, and is now considered the Grand Dame of Spanish cinema and theatre. When the people of Seville voted their Socialist mayor out in the 2011 municipal elections and voted a Partido Popular one in, the residents of the street in question immediately changed the name back again.

N

ow the Communistdominated United Left has played a similar trick on the

Socialist Junta. At the last regional election, for the first time in more than 30 years the Socialist Party did not get a majority – even worse, they only won 47 seats to the Partido Popular's 50. But the PP's Javier Arenas needed 55 seats to be able to form a government and unfortunately he couldn't very well ask the only other party involved – the United Left – for help. So he both won and lost because the Socialists immediately made a pact with the United Left – which had 11 seats – and the Socialist dictatorship continues. The Socialists can't afford to upset the United Left because it would mean an early election, and I suspect this Democratic Memory Law is the sop they're throwing to their Communist partners to keep them sweet.

T

here are rumours that the Socialists are tired of the demands of the United Left. Valderas – who would like to see a Venezuelan Chavez-style government here in Andalusia – is getting cockier by the minute, as this Democratic Memory Law proves. But the Socialists seem to be blind to the lessons of history, which show that once a Communist gets his or her foot in the door, there's no stopping them.

T

hey nearly put their foot in it again a couple of weeks back, when the local Socialist leader in Navarre, Roberto Jimenez, said he was going to join with the Bildu party to oust the regional government. Bildu is just another name for the ETA sympathisers in Navarre and one of ETA's dearest wishes is to convince the people of that region to form part of an independent Basque Country – something they have repeatedly refused to do. Socialist leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba tried to quash the idea but Jimenez turned round and said "I am the Socialist Party here in Navarre". However, someone must have pointed out to him that the Socialists fared poorly in the 2007 local elections mainly because Zapatero was talking to ETA, something a majority of Spaniards disapproved of. Jimenez finally came round and promised not to join forces with Bildu.

I

t remains to be seen what unholy alliance the Socialists will think of next.

Martin Delfín

Writes for the English language version of

Just Desserts

M

artin Delfin was unable to get his column to us this week for reasons beyond his control so Muriel Pilkington dug up this old column of hers dated June 11th, 2007, which describes the U-turn made by former Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero when he realised how much his flirtation with ETA was costing him. It helps to understand why the Socialists can't ally themselves today with another pro-ETA party – Bildu – referred to in her column this week.

R

eality has finally penetrated the cocoon of cock-eyed optimism that has protected the prime minister from this harsh world for the past three years. The ruling Socialist party publicly played up the results of the March 27th local and regional elections that favoured them, but behind closed doors they bit their nails as they tried to work out a strategy that would win them the next general election in nine months’ time – spurred on by the hard mathematical reality that the main opposition party, the Partido Popular (PP), had won 156,000 more votes overall. Thus we read headlines to the effect that Jose Luis Rodriquez Zapatero had decided to play up his social achievements – gay marriage, the laws on domestic violence and gender equality, and financial aid for those who look after old, sick or incapacitated dependants – and to put his patently unpopular peace process with the Basque terrorist group ETA on the back burner for now. ut ETA wasn’t about to play ball and announced that its “permanent ceasefire”, declared in March last year, would end at midnight on Tuesday, June 5th. n retaliation, the first government victim was Inaki De Juana Chaos – described by several government members as a “bloodthirsty killer” when it became known he was about to get out of prison after serving only 17 years of his 3,000 year sentence for the murder of 25 people in Madrid in the mid-1980s. But that was before ETA declared its ceasefire. De Juana staged two hunger strikes last year and the government finally decided “for humanitarian reasons” to allow him to serve the 14 months that remained of a new sentence (three years for threatening certain government officials in articles written in prison) at home under police supervision. But first he was sent to recover in a San Sebastian hospital from his last hunger strike. He entered the hospital on March 1st – on foot, even though he had just allegedly spent 115 days on hunger strike. He was soon photographed on shopping excursions with his girlfriend outside the hospital grounds. Thanks to the ensuing uproar he was then confined to walking in the grounds. The next crisis came when it was known that he was well enough to be discharged. Polls showed that a majority of people wanted him sent back to prison. However, on

B I

Friday, June 1st, the government said it would not be sending him back there, confirming what De Juana had already told his lawyer – that he would be going home. But that was before ETA made known in the early hours of the following Monday morning that the ceasefire was about to end. Without further ado, De Juan was bundled into an ambulance last Wednesday and sent back to jail in Aranjuez to complete his sentence in full. The National Court also ruled that he would be force fed if he went back on hunger strike. Not a word from the government, except that it was respecting the law as interpreted by the courts. However, when reporters asked former defence minister Jose Bono, who could be described as the only honest socialist around, what he thought of the move, he said: “The bells won’t toll when that excrement of the human species dies, they’ll peal with joy.” De Juana has never once expressed any regret for his actions, and in a letter to a friend he once said how much he had enjoyed the televised funeral of an ETA victim. f course, ETA sympathisers – especially its political wing, the banned Batasuna Party – were up in arms. But the government had a nasty surprise lined up for them too. Batasuna leader Arnaldo Otegi was due to appear in court in Madrid last Thursday on a charge of inciting terrorism. He already had a suspended sentence hanging over his head for insulting King Juan Carlos, which meant that if he was found guilty of the second charge he would have to spend the next 15 months in jail. It wouldn’t be the first time. He’s already served time back in the eighties for his part in an ETA kidnapping of a Basque businessman. Once described by Sr Zapatero as a “man of peace” for his support of the peace process, Otegi was quite confident that he would not end up in jail. But that is exactly where he is right now. Apparently he was preparing to speak to a Batasuna rally last Friday morning when the police turned up at his home in Bilbao and hauled him off, obeying orders from the judges in Madrid. The jailing of two such big ETA fish in less than a week has left most political observers reeling, because it was so unexpected, but happy – because Sr Zapatero is finally treating ETA they way he should have done all along. eanwhile, the French police arrested three alleged ETA members in a town just over the border last Wednesday. All three – two men and a woman – are wanted in Spain and are currently in a Paris jail awaiting extradition. A police search of the house where they were staying produced evidence that they might have been preparing a bomb attack in Spain. ut the biggest problem for the Spanish police right now is: just how soon will ETA strike, and where.

New group starting soon So, who is this group for?

Firstly the tech people, like myself, who want to talk tech to similar minded people. Then there are existing users and those who are aspiring Linux users who want to find out what it is all about and how they can move from Windows to a free, modern, Linux system. So we tech people can talk to those aspiring Linux users but we might also have a spin-off group for the higher tech stuff. It all depends on numbers.

What is Linux?

A bit about Linux for the potential new users.

GNU Linux is an operating system in the same way that Microsoft Windows is an operating system. However, there are big differences between Windows and Linux. For a start Linux is open source and, as such, it is supported by people all over the world. People who use Linux are usually supporters of the free and open source software communities.

Why change to Linux?

If you are using Windows you may want to upgrade to Linux. For example, many people have old computers that are running Windows XP, which is soon to lose

support from Microsoft. Also the specs of that old computer may not be up to running Windows 7 or 8. Why not replace XP with a new, modern, Linux operating system and give new life to your computer? Alternatively you may like to configure your own computer desktop. Linux is very configurable.

So who Linux?

uses

You may do already and not know it. Your smart TV probably runs on Linux. Android phones have a Linux kernel. More than that, the government of Extremadura, in Spain, have switched 40,000 of their computers over to Linux. Munich, in Germany, have done similarly. About 97% of the world’s super computers use Linux. Microsoft uses Linux servers as part of their Skype service. The vast majority of servers that deliver web pages to the Internet are Linux based. It goes on ... There are so many different Linux-based operating systems and desktops that it is important to choose the right one for your needs that will work well on your computer. So whether you are experienced or not please come and join us.

You can find much more information on GNU Linux on Wikipedia.

The first meeting of this group starts at 6pm on Thursday 20th March at 'La Iglesia', Avenida Bonanza, Benalmadena. It would be helpful, though not obligatory, to send us an email if you are coming, so as to help the bar staff prepare for the numbers

attending. Food will be available. Written by Brian Ackroyd www.techchico.org.uk Photo shows the Linux penguin logos illustrating some of the apps that can be used.

On my show this week we had a direct link to Crufts. My anchor was Carolyn Mendeith who is an excellent trainer and behaviourist and she has been a guest on my show for the past three years. Carolyn has most recently been seen on Animal Planet’s Top Dog programme as one of the judges. The second series of Top Dog – which aimed to find Europe’s Top Dog is currently being shown. Carolyn had six guests one being Ali Taylor who works with Paul O’Grady (For the Love of Dogs). I am trying to get Paul to come on Pets, Vets and Guests to help a few charities here.

Following this I interviewed Sue Parslow the Editor of Your Cat magazine who gave us some interesting tips for cat lovers. I then had the pleasure of speaking to Rona Brown. Rona is one of the most highly regarded animal and primate consultants in the world. She works within the entertainment industry providing expertly trained creatures for films, commercials and television. Rona has also specialised in chimpanzees and coordinated the award winning PG Tips campaign on TV for many years. She does however deal with all animals, be they exotic or domestic, and as such works the world over with many of the creatures it offers and is is a fascinating lady to listen to.

If you are unable to receive my show on Saturdays then send me an email and each week you will receive a copy link to enable you to listen to the show on your computer at david@thedogman.net

Celia says

You'll be surprised to find that cat health problems are very common. These may be hereditary or something that can be prevented. It doesn’t really matter what breed or type of cat you have, health problems are part of owning a cat. Some are the same health problems that we get – such as cancer, kidney disease, arthritis, flu, and diabetes. They can also pass diseases or conditions on to humans. Rabies and Cat Scratch Disease are examples.

Cats typically remain healthy if they are provided with good food, shelter, plenty of water and are cared for properly. You just have to keep an eye on your pet since they do get sick from time to time. You will become an expert when you get to know your cat well and will soon spot any changes or anything out of the ordinary with your cat’s health and behaviour. First and foremost, taking your cat to the veterinarian for regular check-ups and vaccination is important.

Anna says

Train in many places. When you have chosen your dog school and started classes there is one very important thing to remember. Dogs that only train in schools can and do become like ‘robots’ known in the industry as robot training. They are excellent in school but unaccustomed elsewhere. You need to do the training and the exercises in all sorts of environments. If you don`t, chances are your dog will become very good in class but not listen elsewhere.

Everything new you teach your dog in a quiet environment like a dog school they learn, but once they start to understand you need to take the dog training down to the Paseo, or into the campo, down to the beach and so on.

Nazli says

Many dogs and cats are overweight or obese. And just like people, obesity in pets comes with health risks that include diabetes, arthritis, and cancer. Overfeeding is the leading cause of obesity. Keeping our pets trim can add years to their lives.

Pets need far fewer calories than most of us think – as little as 185-370 a day for a small, inactive dog; just 240-350 calories daily for a 10-pound cat – talk to your vet, who can make feeding suggestions based on your pet's age, weight, and lifestyle.

The Book Thief

DVD NEW RELEASE

Release date: March 11th

Director: Brian Percival Starring: Roger Allam, Sophie Nelisse, Geoffrey Rush

Based on a popular international best selling book by the same name, The Book Thief is about a nine-year-old girl, Liesel, living in the horrors of World War II Germany, who is sent to live with a foster family.

She brings with her a stolen book, "The Gravediggers Handbook," and through her spirited

300: Rise Of An empiRe Directed by Noam Murro Starring: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey

Eight tardy years later, the belated sequel “300: Rise Of An Empire” arrives in theatres, its momentum all but nonexistent. And just as faded as the sheen of its former sinewy glory, so is the spark of inspiration that made its sweaty predecessor if not worthwhile, at least marginally entertaining.

Acting as prequel, sidequel, concurrent-quel and proper sequel, 'Rise Of An Empire' begins before the events of “300,” then pivots alongside them, and eventually surpasses them to tell the next chapter of Persian imperialists trying to overthrow Greece.

If “300” was the story of the prideful Spartans facing the Persians on their own terms only to die a beautiful death (but one ultimately in vain), then ‘Empire’ is the near-

As she learns to read through the help of her new parents and a secret guest, she begins sharing the books. Meanwhile, her adoptive parents are hiding a Jewish refuge beneath the stairs of their home. The young Liesel enjoys her stealing of

efforts, begins collecting other books she finds along the way.

Release date: March 11th

Director: Scott Cooper Starring: Christian Bale, Zoe Saldana, Woody Harrelson

It isn't easy growing up poor in the Rust Belt, as brothers Rodney and Russell know all too well. They can barely scrape out a living for themselves, but they dream of something better.

Calamity strikes when Russell gets arrested, and their hopes are all put on hold, at least for the moment. Rodney wants to wait for his brother before doing

anything rash, but when a dangerous but potentially lucrative opportunity comes his way, he takes it.

Caught up in one of the most notorious crime rings in the northeastern United States, he vanishes, and Russell fears that something terrible has happened to him.

When he gets out of prison, he has a chance to

contemporaneous tale of Athenian soldiers trying to unite the nation against the Indo-European invaders while Sparta goes off to war.

Ambitious in its storytelling aims and scope, 'Rise Of An Empire' is nevertheless still fairly muddled with overexpository voice-over, back story. Written by Snyder and Kurt Johnstad (based on Frank Miller's graphic novel "Xerxes"), the movie is equally as (if not more) interested in the origins of

its villains than it is its heroes and this is because the baddies are superficially much more interesting than the bland “fight for glory and freedom” protagonists, but ultimately they’re just campier, but not much more well-drawn. Forgettable and only mildly entertaining, “300: Rise of An Empire” seals its own fate at the initial story level by being so deeply invested in its own mythmaking and playing it super safe.

Release date: March 11th

Director: Takeshi Kitano Starring: Ryo Kase, Takeshi Kitano, Toshiyuki Nishida When two bodies are fished out of the bottom of a harbour, local detectives suspect gang violence or maybe even a serial killer. What they don't suspect is that one of the men is actually a highpowered government official who'd been outspoken on the evils of Kato, Hanabishi-kai's Grand Yakuza Leader. The Japanese police are determined to bring Kato

down for his crime. But with corruption seeping into all areas of the force, the only person they can trust to get the job done is a man named Otomo ... a former yakuza who used to be one of Kato's most trusted officers.

As Otomo cuts a bloody swath through Kato's forces, the two men are forced to confront their history, but the matter goes

beyond anger, pride or even personal vendettas. It goes, in fact, beyond outrage.

Thoughts and feelings are bouldering into each other this week all in an attempt to bring you into a state of balance and harmony. This is a good time to listen more intently to those close to you as something they say may strike a chord giving you the keys to make the connection between the mind and the heart. Your social life is set to soar, personal popularity throws you in the midst of the action and others are ready and willing to lend a hand if you need it. Take up the role of leadership, stand tall and be the centre of attention. You can automatically sense what is going on and others around you just do not have your level of awareness right now so trust your intuition and let it carry you towards success and rewards. No longer are you perched on the fence, you are committed to making positive changes that will enhance your wellbeing and future. Realistic variations may need to be adhered to when it comes to a plan that you have put in place as you will be able to see the light showing you a better way through. Look beyond the words this week to find the true meaning – that true meaning is usually seen through the choices and actions that others take. Others do not always deal with their feelings as you do in a clear or honest way and you cannot help those that have no true interest in being helped. It is only a matter of time before things start to click into place, everything that is unique about you is making its way out for the public domain to see. Abundance will effortlessly find you, your popularity increases and to top it all your sense of humour is becoming infectious. You have a way of making others feel calm, cosy and warm right now, love and romance is highlighted and you seem to ooze sensuality. Perhaps you were wrong? Something has gone ‘bing’ recently and you have woken up to look at a situation with different eyes. Your understanding of something that happened in the past has not proven to be true or factual and this new insight has given you the opportunity to make decisions and choices for the future that fit your needs. Home and family are on your mind and you will give extra attention to those close to you. You could feel compelled into fighting something that you just can’t control. Everything may not be going as planned or not going the way you would like it to but nonetheless this can be a productive time for you, things are progressing, just not in the order that you would like, so your nerves can get a little frayed. This is not the time to sit back and wait for others to take the lead, remain focused and engaged in what you are doing, be in the moment.

LIBRA

It is all about making those choices that will benefit you as well as another, this is a period of reflection and weighing up what is fair and just. New relationships and projects may have been set in motion in the past few months and now you can assess whether they are worth pursuing. Creatively you are on the ball and are in the mode to make things happen, check the facts and figures twice, work September 23rd - everything out in your mind before taking action. October 22nd

It is time to stand back and be objective, you have got way too involved in the details and this can be limiting your view, remember the vision. There is a very possessive quality taking place in the heavens and you could be tempted to let the green monster of jealousy into the mix. By the weekend you sift out what is really important to you and life starts to flow much easier. Home life is important and you may do something to enhance this area of your life.

Now that your ruling planet is in direct motion it is like someone has switched the light back on and the opportunities you have been seeking will find you. Changes are occurring which will lead you onto the road of prosperity, happiness and satisfaction. Take things one step at a time, don’t run before you can walk, take your time and the doors will fly open for you. The intensity of the past is leaving you; the enthusiastic, bright and breezy Sagittarian is back. Anything that does not have the staying power or the strength to support your life structure is being highlighted for you to have a good clear out. It is like a spring cleaning of the soul. Relationships start to improve and keeping up honest communication is the key. You will be looking back and examining your life, looking at mistakes made as well as the actions that produced happiness and rewards. This is a time of insights. An air of excitement is around you and you will be feeling fresh and alive. Although there may be moments of doubt as you take on board the new changes, for now, you feel good on the inside and your thoughts are on the up. Professional success is coming your way, you are being noticed, and this is not the moment to take impulsive or emotionally charged actions. Instead allow yourself to shine brightly and stand out from the crowd – the unique individual that you are. Life is only limited by your imagination and for you this is not an issue, especially now, as the aspects at the moment have the potential to lift you to a position of power and status. Destiny is calling you, so the key to this week is not to let any form of negativity break your faith. Expect the unexpected and roll with whatever may happen. Your powers of observation are still on the ball and your dreams reveal hidden truths.

One Spanish film which I love and which I continually recommend to friends and students is Volver, directed by Pedro Almodovar. Even if your Spanish is not fantastic it is worth watching it with subtitles. You may be amazed at how much you know. Or not! I believe watching films in Spanish is a great way to improve. It is amazing what you can pick up. Volver means to return in the sense of going back.

Tommy va a volver a Inglaterra. - Tommy is going to go back to England Quiero volver a Paris - I want to go back to Paris. Van a volver en el verano - They are going to go back in the summer. ¿Cuándo puedes volver? - When can you come back?

Then there is devolver which also means return but in the sense of giving back.

Tienes que devolver los libros a la biblioteca cuanto antes - You have to return the books to the library as soon as possible. Pablo dice que va a devolver el dinero a su hermano - Pablo says he is going to give the money back to his brother. Nosotros queremos devolver las cosas a su lugar - We want to put things back in their place. Debes devolver el coche antes de las tres - You should return the car before three o'clock. And lastly we have envolver which means to wrap up.

¿Me lo puede envolver para regalo? - Can you gift wrap it for me? No lo quiero envolver - I don't want to wrap it up. Ya está - That's it Hasta la próxima - Until next time Valerie

Dear Sue,

Can you use home face packs too often? I do have professional facials but like to use home face packs in between. Can I overload my skin? Jackie, Torreblanca Hi Jackie,

Unless you have a very oily skin it is difficult if you are using good products on the correct areas to overload your skin. Your skin will love you if you do a gentle exfoliation, (not a grainy one) once or twice a week.

Follow this with a good quality face mask. You can vary these to get lifting or hydrating properties. Your skin will love you for all this extra attention. Dear Calvin,

My son desperately wants some highlights in his hair, but his school has strict rules against it. Is there any way it can be done during his holidays and be gone by the time he goes back?

Dear Diane,

There is a technique called shoe shining which is done by applying colour to a piece of foil and gently running the foil across the hair, which will colour the tips of the hair. This will give an overall affect of highlights to the hair, but will only last for one cut. So, your son could have it done at the start of his holidays and know for certain that with his next haircut before school all the colour would be removed.

Dear Sue,

What are your thoughts on facial wipes to use on holiday to save taking all those bottles? Thelma, Marbella Dear Thelma,

I wish I could recommend a facial wipe for you, but I have not found one that really work properly. I can only advise from my experience, but I can always spot a skin that has had wipes used on it and not in a good way. As a little cleanser and toner go a long way I suggest buying

some small travel bottles and filling them up from your normal ones. Dear Calvin,

I have always used a wax on my hair for finishing, but since I have lived here it seems to go very greasy and doesn’t have the same hold. Any ideas? Tammy, Benalmadena Dear Tammy,

I have come across this complaint many times since I have lived in Spain, and I think the temperatures here

have a lot to do with your problem. Your wax, in effect is melting and this is why you are going greasy, and not getting the hold. Try using a dry wax or a paste as these have less oil than most ordinary wax and I think you will have more success. Sniffing out cancer with electronic noses Diane, Mijas

It may soon be possible to obtain easy and early diagnoses of diseases by smell. Last week researchers found one odour-sniffing machine was as good as a mammogram at detecting breast cancer – and many other devices capable of spotting other diseases may be on the way.

Throughout history, doctors have sniffed their

patients' breath, urine, stool and other bodily fluids to help with diagnoses. A 2011 review article featured "smelling notes" of dozens of diseases. Yellow fever is said to smell like a butcher's shop, liver failure like raw fish, and typhoid like freshly baked

first time. All the T-shirts were then collected and patches from the underarm area were cut out and placed in squeeze bottles.

These were used to supply puffs of air to a panel of smelling volunteers. The researchers said: "They rated the T-shirts with regards to intensity, unpleasantness and healthiness, and for all these measures it turned out that the so-called sick group smelled more aversively." Bad smells exist for a reason, said Val Curtis from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. "The disgust system in the brain has evolved to make us stay away from things that might make us sick. The most dangerous place on the planet is other people."

For cancer, early detection is crucial, but the symptoms that prompt a visit to the doctor's surgery often don't emerge until the disease is advanced. Cancerous cells have a different metabolism from normal cells, and therefore emit a different pattern of chemicals, a different odour. While it's too subtle

for most human noses, dogs have been trained to identify multiple types of cancer, as well as diabetes. (Humans have around five million scent receptors, but dogs have up to 300 million.)

But dogs aren't the only animals that can smell cancer. So, apparently, can fruit flies. A recent study by researchers at the University of Konstanz in Germany showed that the scent of cancer samples prompted a particular pattern of activity on the flies' antennae. They are planning to identify which receptors on the antennae respond to the cancerous smells, then they hope to grow their own antennae in a petri dish, for use in an e-nose.

A long-term goal is to get easy-to-use diagnostic tools into the home – and into our pockets. With the ever-growing sophistication of mobile phones – some of the latest models have temperature and humidity sensors – the idea of routinely breathing on to your phone to check for disease is not science fiction. The chip already exists, and getting it into a phone is straightforward engineering or electronics.

Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip

Celebs are joining ranks to get “Bossy” banned From little four-year-olds to mature 40-year-olds everybody objects to being called bossy

… no-one seems to mind being called assertive or strong minded but Bossy... not a hope!

A host of celebrities including Victoria Beckham, former US Secretary of State Condalisa Rice, and Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg who launched the campaign have been joined by singer Beyonce this week to discourage the use of the term “Bossy” because they say that it is demeaning and damaging to younger girls. It is true that you rarely hear the word used in connection with men who would be termed in more favourable terms and for being “macho” and

standing up for themselves. According to a report, girls' self-esteem drops 3.5 times more than boys' between primary school and secondary school and that by the age of 12 girls are much less interested in leading. The campaign aims to make girls and women lose their fear of being assertive and to stand up for themselves more. Victoria Beckham says that a woman may be called bossy whereas a man may be termed “commanding” when they are in a position of authority. They may be in

management positions or own their own company but it was found that even women appear not to respect a woman boss as much as a male one and, they say, that has to stop. The Ban Bossy campaign, run with Girl Scouts of the USA and Leanin.org, promotes leadership roles among young girls. Sheryl Sandberg says she remembers a teacher referring to her as bossy when she was in ninth grade school and, she says, it hurt. She said: "We call (women) too aggressive or other B-words in the workplace. They're bossy

as little girls, and then they're aggressive, political, shrill, too ambitious as women." Beyonce signs off the campaign ad, saying: "I'm not bossy, I'm the boss." Ladies, if you happen to find yourself being the boss, there’s nothing wrong with striving to make sure your wishes, as long as they’re reasonable, are carried out. Always try to speak to people in a pleasant manner but don’t be afraid to be assertive if you have too. So, sometimes we are a little “bossy” but it’s usually for a good reason!

“Bossy” or simply the Boss - Beyonce

Like Marmite, Bob Crow One boy’s dream come true was either loved or hated by many people A South African boy had the night of his life after running onto the pitch at the end of a friendly match against Brazil in Soweto.

After the final whistle had blown in Brazil's 5-0 victory over South Africa at Soccer City the boy ran towards superstar forward

But he was someone that couldn’t be ignored. His union members loved him for standing up for them and their employers hated him for not backing down to them.

Bob Crow, 52, general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union, died after suffering a suspected heart attack. He was taken to hospital on Monday saying he felt unwell but died in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Tributes have come from across the political spectrum, with Mayor of London Boris Johnson, who regularly sparred with Mr Crow, saying he was a "fighter and a man of character. Whatever our political differences, and there were many, this is tragic news." And another figure who was used to controversy, former London Mayor Ken Livingstone, said of him: "He fought really hard for his members. The only working-class people who still have well-paid jobs in

Neymar. Security tried to stop him but when he was spotted by the 22-year-old Barcelona player he ran over and scooped up the boy in his arms.

The resulting photos were the best of the night and one little boy’s dream had come true.

London are his members." Some saw him as a working class hero but he was seen by others simply as a force for disruption. But Richard Crow, his brother said of him: "He was an annoying little rascal to me when he was a kid. He would forever be telling me that he would tell my mum and dad the sort of thing that I got up to but he was one of those loveable little rogues." East London-born Mr Crow left school at 16 and got a job felling trees and fixing rails on the London Underground. The Millwall supporter rose through the ranks to become general secretary of

the RMT in 2002 and by 2008 the union's membership had swelled from 57,000 to 80,000, making it the fastestgrowing in the country. His refusal to back down and determination to fight for his beliefs soon cemented his standing as a member of the "Awkward Squad" of union leaders. Mr Crow is understood to have suffered an aneurysm and heart attack and was taken to Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone. He lived in Woodford Green, east London, with his partner Nicola Hoarau, 50. He leaves four children.

SUNDAY March 16th

Suzi Perry presents action from the opening race of the season, held at Albert Park in Melbourne, where Kimi Raikkonen was victorious last year while racing for Lotus. The Finn was looking to reproduce the form he showed in that race but as a Ferrari driver this time around, having returned to the team he represented from 2007 to 2009 before taking a break from the sport. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton will have hoped Mercedes continued to show the impressive speed and reliability that was evident during winter testing.

Do know what my wife is doing at the moment? Correct. She is busy making Welsh Cakes! We also enjoyed reading the article on St. David. We were both born 15 miles from St David´’s and still live there in Pembrokeshire. We spend the summer months there and winter out here. Best wishes to all at The News.

Editor says: It’s lovely to hear from our readers and we know that a lot of you follow our recipes every week. We try and keep them topical so, this week have a look at our one on page 21 for one with a difference... As it’s St. Patrick’s Day coming up, it’s for a delicious Irish Cream to share with your friends!

I refer to Roy Packman's letter in the "News" dated February 12th, 2014 I would like to correct some points that he makes as he appears to have got his applications (APPS) and his Operating Systems (OS) confused. Whereas XBMC is a nonprofit making company producing various hardware and software APPS, and bundle these products into various IPTV top boxes and games consuls, they still require an OS for their APPS to run on. They cleverly use a number of OSs, but unfortunately all the "credit card" size boxes use an OS called Android. Android OS is used extensively, but not totally, for the many brands of IPTV boxes supplied along the coast, and need a Broadband speed of about 2.5 Mbs to allow continuous streaming of UKTV programmes over the internet.

Now here is the problem; because we live in a Third World country with respect to the supply of Internet Broadband speed, Telefonica (Movistar) cannot supply this amount of speed even to densely populated areas such as Benalmadena. In Bangladesh and Uganda you get a better service with respect to Broadband speed. In Hong Kong and South Korea, although far from third world countries you will get 100 Mbs of Broadband speed all day long! In Arroyo de la Miel I have been continuously calling Telefonica for the past ten years asking for a speed increase for my internet. They tell me they can only guarantee me 1Mb but on unspecified occasions might go over two for a short period and insist on charging me for six. I occasionally get 2.2 Mbs of Broadband speed which still cannot guarantee to continuously stream IPTV

from these "small black top boxes" with an Android OS that we are being offered by many companies up and down the coast. In fact I am coming across more and more people that have bought these boxes at inflated charges, only to have to take them back because the box cannot function correctly with the inconsistent, low Broadband speed supplied by Telefonica. Finally, a Windows OS as found on most laptops requires a lower Broadband speed to supply a continuous streamed picture for UKTV than an Android OS. I use a small laptop operating Win7 OS connected to my TV and this appears to cope with my Third World Broadband internet speed. Of course, sadly, this is not really a solution to most people unless you are a computer business with spare laptops as we are.

Regular readers will know that I don’t think that many of the constellations look anything like what they are meant to represent.

A

ries is nothing more than four stars forming a slightly crooked line and looks nothing like a ram. Virgo is a sprawling mass of stars with no real defined shape while Libra is just two fairly indistinct stars. And as for Aquarius, well even after several glasses I still can’t make out what it’s meant to be! ut there are one or two constellations that are quite impressive and even with the slightest of imagination it is easy to see where the ancient Greeks, Romans and Babylonians got their inspiration from. Once it’s been pointed out then I suppose Taurus could be described as the two horns of the Bull charging down upon Orion. And I guess you could say that Gemini has a certain twin-ness quality to it. But for me the two constellations that really do resemble their namesakes are Scorpio and Leo. corpio is not fully visible from the UK as it is too far south, and until I moved to Spain I’d never really seen it properly. But whenever I am giving a star party during the summer months I always ask if there are any Scorpios present. There’s almost always at least one volunteer and as I point out the shape of the Scorpion as it crawls up the sky you can hear an audible gasp as people agree that it really does look like a scorpion. eo the lion is also a good look-alike and at this time of the year he can be seen proudly dominating the early evening eastern sky and once you’ve spotted him I think you’ll agree that he does look a bit like one of the lions in Trafalgar Square. His distinctive shape is quite recognisable amongst the other stars. ccording to Greek mythology Leo was the Lion killed by Hercules during one of his twelve labours. He strangled the Lion and then had it placed in the heavens for all to see. So how to find Leo. Go outside after about 8.00pm on a clear starry night and give your eyes 10-15 minutes to become dark adapted, be away from any street lights as they will block out the stars. Now turn to face an easterly direction. Try to spot The Plough or as the Americans call it ‘The Big Dipper’. To me it always looks like a giant saucepan with three stars forming the ‘handle’ and another four stars forming the crooked square of the ‘bowl’. At this

A

T

time of the year The Plough is standing up on its ‘handle’ with the ‘Bowl’ at the top. he two upper most stars of The Plough are called The Pointers and as I mentioned last week if you follow them in a straight line to the left then they point to the North Star. But if you follow the line of The Pointers this time to the right you will find a fairly bright star called Regulus. Regulus is the key star in Leo and marks the position of the Lion’s chest. Presently Leo is pointing upwards in the sky so try to find the six stars that form a ‘reversed question mark’ or sickle shape beginning with Regulus. This sickle shape forms the head of the lion facing upwards; the rest of his body is below the sickle and forms a triangle finishing in a point at his tail with a star called Denebola which literally means the Lion’s Tail. here are lots of interesting stars and deep space objects located around Leo that can be seen with binoculars or a small telescope. Regulus is not a single star but is a group of four stars made up of two separate pairs about 77 light years away. Regulus itself is about four times bigger than the Sun but it spins very quickly causing it to be almost egg shaped while its companion star is an extinct white dwarf star. nother star in Leo is called Wolf 359 and is the third closest star to the Sun at just over seven light years away. Despite its proximity to the Sun, Wolf 359 can only be seen through a large telescope. It is one of the lowestmass stars ever discovered, as well as one of the faintest.

VW rethinks Skoda and Seat strategy Volkswagen Group is striking out in a new direction to boost the image and appeal of its Skoda and Seat brands, moving Skoda more upmarket while refocusing Seat on Europe after a failed China export strategy.

Czech-based Skoda is trailing ambitious sales targets and Spanish carmaker Seat is battling a decade of losses. Previously positioned as VW's budget alternative for eastern Europe and Asia, Skoda will target more affluent buyers in future, its CEO Winfried Vahland said at the Geneva auto show.

Skoda unveiled its elegant Vision C concept car in Geneva, its first coupe alluding to a more dynamic styling of future

vehicles – the five-door model has enclosed door handles and triangular headlamps.

"We never before expressed passion in our products," Vahland said. "It's like the brand is growing up."

Similarly, Seat is countering its image as the eternal money loser of the VW group by offering more variants of its Leon model and sharpening its focus on rebounding European markets. Though reducing

non-production staff and administration, it's unclear when the Spanish business will return to profit, CEO Juergen Stackmann said at the show. Seat has amassed 1.5 billion euros of losses since 2005. The brand is now reaching beyond its traditional base of young city dwellers, targeting families and fleet operators with the Leon ST, its first compact station wagon. The model has attracted 20,000 orders within weeks, system costing just 300 euros. Intellilink can connect to smartphones using Apple's iOS or Google's Android operating system to answer phonecalls and dictate text messages using a handsfree speaker.

Carmakers to tap into smartphone tech.

Europe's carmakers are tapping into the smartphone technology to give an edge to low-cost minicars in a market that has grown to account for almost 10 percent of new-car sales in austeritybattered Europe.

The Opel Adam Rocks, (pictured above), Peugeot 108, Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo, which all debuted at the Geneva Motor show on March 4th, are available with large multimedia screens that can display music libraries or navigation maps stored on a smartphone. Such features have already proved a big draw for customers in more upmarket models, and are now being added to a new breed of urban runabouts pitched at younger, techsavvy drivers.

"What used to be a feature seen in premium cars is now coming in to the low and medium end of the market," said Dinesh Paliwal, CEO of Harman International, a maker of so-called "infotainment" systems for the auto industry.

"It's driven by a change in lifestyle where people no longer want to stop being connected just because they are in a car," Paliwal said. With prices starting between €9,500 and €11,500, minicars are proving popular among first-time buyers in Europe as the region emerges from a prolonged period of economic weakness.

General Motors unit Opel unveiled the Adam Rocks in Geneva with its Intellilink infotainment

An Opel spokesman said the Intellilink system was already being ordered

Stackmann said. "I view myself as a member of a relay team taking part in a marathon run," he added. "It's a tough business." Stackman also said that Seat is considering building cars in China. Plans by his predecessor to expand to China from Seat's base in Martorell near Barcelona failed because of high import duties and distribution problems. Seat sold a dismal 1,100 cars in the world's biggest market in its first full year there in 2013. by 70 percent of European buyers of the standard Adam model.

Not all attempts to make cars more sophisticated have been a success, however. Ford Motors slipped in the quality rankings in the US after its Sync infotainment system proved vulnerable to glitches.

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips Playing AQ

Chances of your having AA or QQ are very real, making it a hard call for them to make. Making this move is only a good idea against ABC players. ABC players will react to this move exactly in line with the strength of the hand they're holding. ...Continued week

from

last

If you attempt this move against tricky players, you can put yourself into poor spots. For example, if you make this move against a player known to raise, bet, call and threebet light, you will gain no information going to the flop. You have now built a statistically very large pre-flop heads up pot, with no information in the hand. This makes postflop decisions very difficult. Against such a player, if you think hitting your ace or queen is good, the size of the pot will dictate how much it will sting if you're wrong.

Late Position

In late position, I would

advocate raising an unopened pot with A-Q almost every time. It is a top 5% hand, and if no one is showing strength, it is most likely best. If you are behind a raiser, it has to be a read-based play. Against anyone resembling a tight player, it wouldn't be a mistake to muck the hand. Even if the raiser is a nutbar, you have to remember that even nutbars get dealt monster hands, and they will be raising those just like all the rest. Playing A-Q in a raised pot is a purely read-based scenario. If you're at a table where you are outmatched, A-Q is better left in the muck, than in your hand. Even though I would advocate limp-reraising with A-Q in certain situations, I would rarely, if ever, encourage reraising from late position with it. Your reraise is going to force everyone else in the hand to fold to the original raiser, isolating them and you. Good players here can smooth-call virtually any hand to either set a trap, set up a bluff, or try to crack you. You won't gain enough information

from a good player in this scenario to make it a valuable play.I don't like to have to count on luck to make my hand profitable. Smooth-calling a raise is obviously a poor option. You have no information on the hand by making this move, and are putting yourself into the exact scenarios I listed earlier. Those ended as -EV. I feel that A-Q is better mucked behind a raise without having a serious read on the other players at the table. If you're able to read them blind, then having A-Q is irrelevant, as your cards no longer matter.

Afterthoughts

A-Q is by far the biggest trouble hand in poker. For this reason alone, unless you have a good reason, and a good spot to play it, it's best left mucked. I would be interested to get your feedback on this article, and your thoughts on A-Q. If you have any comments to make, questions or views on this or any other subject please email wayne@bolsa-fiesta.com

Malaga's 2-0 away win at fellow strugglers Osasuna gave their Primera Division survival hopes a much needed boost on Monday night. Early on Duda had a long-range effort palmed away by Fernandez, but moments later Riera should have given Osasuna the lead but he fired over the bar from just six yards. Caballero was then on hand to keep Malaga on in the game as he made an impressive double save from first Damia and then Alvaro Cejudo, following Roberto Torres' corner. But it was Malaga who took the lead in the 13th minute as Samu

volleyed home from an Amrabat cross. Duda brought another save from Fernandez at the midway point of the first half but the best chances were coming down the other end with Caballero denying Torres before Jordan Loties hit the post with the rebound. Both sides were creating chances with Roque Santa Cruz for Malaga and Cejudo and Loties for Osasuna all wasting opportunities to score from set-pieces. Gamez went in the book for dissent just before the break and the teams had only been back out eight minutes when he was given his marching orders for a

second yellow card, following a foul on Torres. Malaga continued to press forward, though, and Sergi Darder missed from distance before putting a header wide from a corner. If anything, playing against 10-men seemed to have stunted Osasuna and it was Malaga who doubled their lead in the 66th minute as Amrabat slotted home after latching on to a Santa Cruz pass. That did seem to spur the hosts to life as Torres brought a smart save from Caballero – but they could not find a way through in the closing stages.

Exciting finish at Miraflores The "2 Plus" Competition has not been held at Miraflores for a few years, but this year it was introduced again as something different. Players have to score more than one shot each end for the score to count. Either first to 21 shots or a time limit prevails. Some good games were held over the three days of

play and not many went to 21 shots, however the final between Derek Carr and Dudley Calder turned out to be a real cliffhanger. Dudley started well with four shots on the first end and another four on the fifth end but after a number of zero ends Derek managed to get going. Half way through the

match with the score at 12-4 Derek began pulling back and after 22 ends the score was tied on 15 all when the bell sounded to signal the time was up. One extra end was played to decide the winner and Derek emerged the winner. By Pam Shemmings (Secretary)

All bets are off, FA could introduce ban

Football Association chairman Greg Dyke says a complete ban on players and club staff betting on football matches could soon be introduced. Newcastle United's Dan Gosling admitted an FA misconduct charge on Monday. Premier League players Andros Townsend and Cameron Jerome have previously been fined for rule breaches. "No final decision has been made, but it [a complete ban] is one of the things that's being discussed," Dyke told BBC Late Kick Off North West.

Reed tames the `Blue Monster´

American Patrick Reed kept his nerve through the final round to claim his third PGA title with a oneunder-par 71, holding on to win by one stroke in the WGC – Cadillac Championship at The Blue Monster, Doral. Two ahead overnight, Reed, 23, the world number 44, was soon four ahead after birdieing three of the first four holes and he finished on four under. Welshman Jamie Donaldson shot a great final round 70, but he had an unfortunate bogey on the treacherous 18th hole to miss out on 2nd place on his own, instead he shared second with Bubba Watson.

World number one Tiger Woods, was a strong favourite to lift the title for

the eighth time, especially after his course record 66 on Saturday, but he was suffering with more back trouble and shot a disappointing 78 to finish nine adrift of the winner.

The amount of golf balls finding watery graves was more akin to a society outing, with 249 balls ending up in the water during the first three rounds, admittedly strong winds influenced play but on Sunday all was tranquil, with clear skies, but the remodelled Trump National course in Florida, was still causing the players huge problems. to finish in a share of ninth at two over and Rory McIlroy returned a 74, with only one birdie at the first, to close on plus five and a tie for 25th. US Open champion Justin Rose strung together a great run of six birdies in seven holes to get back to level par for the tournament but shanked a bunker shot and with successive double bogeys, a 73 was the best he could manage for a six-over total and a share of 34th. Gold for Paralympian Visually impaired Winter Paralympic champion Kelly Gallagher and her guide Charlotte Evans almost quit the sport two years ago because a personality clash was "tearing each other apart".

Gallagher, 28, who won Super-G gold on Monday, broke her jaw in 2011 and then lost father Patrick to cancer. She also struggled to get on with Evans, needing a psychologist to resolve differences between the two of them. "My mind was such a

David Beckham has described how he struggled to sleep the night before making his Only Fools And Horses debut because he was so nervous. The star instigated the TV special, which will reunite market trader Del Boy (Sir David Jason) and Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst) for the first time in a decade. Beckham said he went to bed so keen on perfecting his lines on the eve of his guest appearance, that he woke up the next morning with the script still on his chest. The retired football star, 38, was surprised to have been given so much dialogue in the BBC1 Sport Relief special.
