e News: e right time for a change

For several few weeks the people who were at The News newspaper had been asking advertisers and readers where they thought the future should lie. Our advertisers said they preferred something that people hold on to and thought that was the A5 glossy magazines. Our readers agreed that they do indeed hold on to them much longer than newspapers but also said that they looked forward to getting The News delivered because they loved the editorial content inlcuding the news items, features, columns, and

magazine bits such as People and Fashion, Out and About, Health and Beauty and all the puzzles. So, here we are! We have changed to an A5 glossy that you can all keep BUT – and it’s a big but – we are also giving you all the content that our readers know and love, so everybody will be getting what you’ve been telling us you want from our changes. And don’t forget you can still

THE NEWS MONTHLY REVIEW

ICKHAM’S

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

Hello!

Welcome to the first ever edition of The News Monthly Review. The Review will follow the editorial format of The News newspaper and will focus on what has been in the news, following the most interesting stories from around the world that have been going on over the past month and keeping you up-to-date with their progress. We will have news from Spain, our local area, the community at large, UK news and world news, news from the sports and motoring world, news about people and fashion, health and beauty and what’s going on in our area. Plus we will have an astronomy column, your horoscopes for the month, political analysis and, of course, a recipe of the month. From our advertisers´ point of view, The News Review will be a small magazine with many more pages than The News Newspaper but will be something that people will keep at hand and look at again and again over the month to find services, entertainment and whatever our community needs. The reason we have changed format from a newspaper to a magazine is that we believe people hang on to magazines far longer than they do a paper. We will be able to give our readers more indepth news so that, instead of just having a snippet of what’s happening, we will be able to follow news items as they progress giving a fuller picture of what is going on in general.

We will have the same team that you know and love working on The News Monthly Review plus a few new people, so we hope you enjoy this new venture of ours as much as you enjoyed The News newspaper. Sadly,Martin Delfin will not be with us for this month as he is recovering from a rather nasty operation – we all wish him a speedy recovery and we’ll see him in his spot next month. Apart from all this, what have we been up to over the last month while we’ve been putting all this together? We have seen the PAD Easter dinner come and go with Easter Bonnets all over the place. The event was held at Howies in La Cala (formerly Mijas Playa) and the bonnet competition was won by Greta, well done you! And then it was time for their annual dog show. All of the entrants were, of course, winners whether or not they went home with a medal. Cambridge dieters who are under my care are continuing to lose weight, some more than others but, of course, there are five different levels to the diet so some are on a higher level of replacement nutrition than others and are losing more. If you are worried about your weight and fancy having a chat to find out how to lose weight safely and effectively, give me a call on 633 917 081. On the home front, Jackson is now around nine months old and still rushing around like a lunatic. We now have the acequia running, which is our irrigation water that comes down in channels all over the campo, and he’s found it with a vengeance. He absolutely loves running and jumping through the flowing water, jumping all over our other, older dog, Hanny, then of course it’s our turn! He bounds out of the water, tries jumping all over us like he does Hanny, then when that doesn’t work, it’s time to shake the excess water on to us instead. So, if anybody meets me out in the campo, you’ll know why I’m dressed like Worzel Gummidge! Lastly, it was Dangerous Ellis’ 65th birthday recently so happy birthday and STAY SAFE! See you all next month.

King in the wings

Just a few years ago, the abdication of King Juan Carlos was unthinkable, but illness and scandals have taken their toll and his popularity fell to an all-time low earlier this year. The king started to age dramatically about four years ago, coinciding with a fall and a minor lung operation, but public concern turned to anger when it was revealed he had been on an elephant hunt with a much younger blonde German aristocrat in Botswana. It only came to light because he slipped and damaged his hip, which led to another operation. For the first time in his life, King Juan Carlos said he was sorry and that "it wouldn't happen again". But what has damaged the monarchy most of all is the ongoing scandal involving his son-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin, who was accused of using a nonprofit sports organisation, the Nóos Institute, he set up with then partner Diego Torres, to channel money into bank accounts in Switzerland. The judge handling the case, José Castro, suspected Princess Cristina of being actively involved in her husband's financial shenanigans but finally accepted her defence that she merely signed documents put in front of her by Urdangarin, as any dutiful wife would.

The case is nearing its end and Judge Castro went on record recently saying he is convinced Urdangarin set up the Noos Institute with the specific intention of using it to transfer money out of the country. The couple now live in Geneva where Cristina works for the Caixa Foundation and her husband, according to recent media reports, is not looking for work but is staying at home to look after their four children. The case has been

out of the main newspaper headlines for some time, which may account for the king's slowly recovering popularity. But the damage has been done. Most recent opinion polls show that around 70 per cent of Spaniards want the king to step aside for his son, Crown Prince Felipe. And even the royalty watchers who swore the king would never abdicate are now beginning to say he may step down next year.

The two men's lives could not have been more different. Juan Carlos had to endure decades of living in the shadow of dictator Francisco Franco in an effort to save the monarchy. His grandfather, Alfonso XIII, had left the country as the Second Republic was sworn in. Juan Carlos was born in Italy before his father, Juan, moved the family to Portugal to get away fromWorld War II. Meanwhile, he was scheming to get the monarchy restored. Franco didn't trust him, considering him "too much of a Red", but he had always said he intended to restore the monarchy some day. So he decided to educate the little prince in his own image. Juan finally agreed and so Juan Carlos left his family in exile in Portugal and came to Spain when he was barely 10 years old. Both his father and Franco used the boy shamelessly in their never-ending political battles but it paid off, in 1969, when Franco declared the prince his heir. The idea was that Juan Carlos would inherit all the dictator's powers

and reign as an authoritarian monarch, keeping Franco's regime alive.

However, Juan Carlos had other ideas and Franco was no sooner in his grave than he started to dismantle the regime. Franco died in November 1975, and the first free elections were held in June 1977 – nothing short of a miracle brought about by two men, Juan Carlos and his Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez.

Perhaps because of childhood tribulations, Juan Carlos has been an excellent and loving father. Elena, Cristina and Felipe were given the best education and were the first members of the Bourbon dynasty ever to go to university. Felipe was allowed to sow a few wild oats but eventually settled down – then he shocked Spanish society by falling in love with a journalist, Letizia Ortiz, who not only didn't have a drop of blue blood in her veins but was also a divorcee, and therefore not a virgin. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia put no obstacles in his way – like most of the other royal couples in Europe they were only too aware that forcing their son to marry the "right sort of girl" could end in tragedy. Their close relationship with Princess Diana both before and after her divorce drove that lesson home. Continued on Page 10

Linea Directa advise you REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN. SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT.

Linea Directa

Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process.

STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration.

STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds).

STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially presummer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars.

Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you.

We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Linea Directa please call 902 123 104 More information on Linea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

Cont from page 6 Letizia had a hard time trying to fit into the Royal Household. Her two sisters-in-law never hid their dislike for her but such snobbery does not go down well with the Spanish people. In fact she was as much at sea as her husband who as heir-inwaiting did not have a very defined role either. Prince Felipe’s mission is simply “to serve Spain”, so the couple ended up interpreting it to signify that they are public employees with no fixed timetable or holidays, who must be ready to give everything they have at all times. That means contributing to making Spain more prosperous, and cohesive; it means contributing to help the country’s international reputation; and to provide a human face to the monarchy, whether consoling the mother of a child with an incurable disease, or attending a function in some remote corner of the country. Over the years, the couple have successfully provided an image of institutional stability abroad, but it is perhaps their image in Spain itself that is more important. Typical of that image was the way they celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary on May 22nd. They chose to go to Toledo to do some sightseeing

in the old town's centre and to visit the exhibition to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of El Greco. They were dressed informally and wandered around with just a couple of fairly unobtrusive bodyguards, stopping and chatting to the small crowds that gathered when news of the visit spread. Later that night, back in Madrid, they dined out at their favourite restaurant, recognised by the other diners who were too well educated and sophisticated the make a big fuss about their presence. Meanwhile, their two children, Leonor and Sofía, aged nine and seven respectively, go to the same school their father attended, driven there each day by their parents. They have largely been kept out of the limelight, and lead relatively normal lives. Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia’s reign will be very different from that of Juan Carlos and Sofía’s. It will be smaller, more modern, open, and transparent, in line with Prince Felipe’s own publicly expressed views on the type of monarchy he intends to lead. Next year would be a good year for King Juan Carlos to hand over to his son – he will have been on the throne 40 years, a nice round figure to bow out on.

An Oasis just up from the Coast If you are looking for somewhere rather special to eat then discover the surprising Fairuz Restaurant in the Las Islas Boutique Hotel. Las Islas is easy to find if you follow the signs. Turn on to Torreblanca from the old N340 and the one-way system will take you to a romantic and tranquil oasis hidden within the urbanization. The gardens are calm and romantic, particularly in the evenings when the thoughtful lighting enhances their beauty, during the day you can relax by a crystal clear pool. There are winding paths to stroll along through Mediterranean gardens complete with bougainvillea, oleander and wonderfully colourful hibiscus, all expertly interwoven with roses, lavender geraniums, plumbago and many different types of shrubs and trees.

The choice of food is fantastic, freshly prepared and varied. For starters there is everything from the humble but delicious prawn cocktail to the more exotic crispy prawns in oriental sauce and oriental salad, there is beef carpaccio topped with fresh Parmesan, melon with Serrano ham and even goulash soup – to name but a few.

Main courses offer among other choices Irish fillet steak, chicken stuffed with cheese and Serrano ham and the Las Islas roast lamb marinated in fine herbs and served with a pear and mint sauce. There is plenty of choice in the fish department too as well as vegetarian options.

Then, of course, there are the delicious Lebanese options. When we last went there we chose the Mezza plate for two to share that consisted of a selection of hot and cold starters – Tabbouleh (a refreshing crushed wheat, parsley and mint salad), Mutabbal (a smoked aubergine dip), Hummus and Warak Enab (stuffed vine leaves) as well as two different types of Borak, little pasty parcels stuffed with either spiced minced meat or cheese and spinach. Our main course was a plate of spicy (but not too spicy) Kafta – a kind of kebab that

is minced lamb with spices and onion pressed on to a skewer and grilled, together with some wonderfully tender lamb and chicken pieces. The meats were served with Basmati rice and a spicy tomato dip, while pieces of pitta bread kept everything warm. Last, but not least was the desert – a simple but mouth-watering platter of fresh fruits – fresh melons, pineapple and cherries etc. And, of course there is the extensive wine list which includes some exceptional Lebanese wines. For non-drinkers like myself there is homemade still lemon and mint drink served with loads of ice and quite delicious. If you fancy making a night of it then Las Islas has 12 traditionally styled bedrooms colourfully decorated with colours of the desert from deep reds though golds and purples. The balconies look down over the gardens to the sea and you can enjoy breakfast outside on one of the mosaic-topped tables.

Owner Omar has restaurants in London and Sharm el Sheik in Eygpt and has been at Las Islas for almost ten years now. It only opens from April to November, from 12.30 to 22.30, so that guests can enjoy the beautiful setting for either lunch or dinner.

This is a delightful venue and comes highly recommended by The News Monthly Review. by Kym Wickham

Deep sea challenge for MH370 search The underwater search for wreckage from Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is running into constant setbacks because the topography of the ocean floor in the zone is unusually rugged, making the operation extremely challenging. It came to a sudden halt last month when the robotic mini-submarine Bluefin-21 exceeded its maximum depth and returned to the surface. Bluefin-21 had begun its search near an area of sea bed known as the Zenith Plateau, around 1,800km north west of Perth, Australia, and close to where ultrasonic "pings" likely to have come from "black box" flight recorders were detected. But after scanning the sea bed for six hours, a sudden depth increase triggered an automatic safety device, returning the mini-sub to the surface.

The search teams may now have to turn to other types of underwater vehicle capable of going deeper. One such craft could be the Remus-6000, which was used in the search for the wreckage of the Air France Flight 447 in 2011. The AUV Abyss, a Remus-type owned by German Ocean Research group Geomar, could be readied at its base in Kiel and sent to Australia within two weeks.

Geomar spokesman Dr Andreas Villwock said the Abyss mini-sub would not need any special configuration, and could be flown to Australia by air cargo and shipped to the search zone. The record depth for an unmanned craft is held by the Japanese mini-sub Kaiko, which reached 10,911m in the Challenger Deep section of the Mariana Trench – the deepest known part of the ocean – in 1995. Kaiko was lost in 2003, but in 2009 the American mini-sub Nereus reached 10,902m in the same area. The deepest manned voyage came in 1960, when the Trieste – a deep-diving submersible known as a bathyscaphe – reached 10,916m in the Mariana Trench. Then in 2012, film director James Cameron became the first person to travel solo to the bottom of the

Mariana Trench. Depths in the current search zone range from 1,753m to 6,000m, but the sea bed in the Mini sub The Bluefin-21 region has not been extensively surveyed. Current maps of the area's sea bed are mostly based on satellite surveys, and more detailed models are being assembled by the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

A spokesman for the organisation said that if the location of the detected signals had correctly identified the crash site, multidirectional ocean currents could explain why no wreckage has yet been found."It's right at a position where the current is flowing in one direction just south of that position, and in the other direction just north of that," he said.

easyJet sees huge profits’ rise for 6 months One of the things hardly anybody liked about travelling on easyJet was their lack of allocated seating and having to pay the fees for their so-called Speedy Boarding package that basically let you go to the front of the queue and get on first to get the seat you want. However, in recent years it seemed that the world and his wife had paid for it so you were no better off. easyJet has a tendency to listen to their passengers’ moans and react to them, so last year they introduced allocated seating and stopped the bunfight to get on their planes. The upshot of this is that they have seen an upsurge in profits by a further 6.3% in the first 6 months of the year. Largely because of this initiative the airline transported 12 million

business passengers, attracting them from the carriers that historically served the business world, in the 12 months to March 31st 2014. easyJet's chief executive, Carolyn McCall, hailed the introduction of allocated seating on flights as being the main cause who added that once passengers try easyJet, 95 percent of them don’t return to their previously preferred carrier. The seating rose to 89% capacity on flights at a revenue of 54.80 pounds sterling per seat on average which is up 2.6% on the same period last year. The airline posted a loss before tax of £53m for the six months to March 31 – better than the £55m-£65m range forecast earlier this year. Airlines traditionally make losses over the winter months before flying into the black

during the lucrative summer season. Total revenue rose 6.3pc to £1.7billion, and Davy analyst, Stephen Furlong said he is likely to raise his estimate for easyJet's full year pre-tax profit – currently his forecast stands at £561.7m – as a consequence of the better than expected first half result. Low cost airlines such as easyJet, Ryanair and Vueling – a budget airline owned by British Airways' parent company IAG – have been taking share from struggling national flag carriers in Europe, which have been bending beneath the weight of higher cost bases. "I think allocated seating has been the single most popular thing we have ever done for our passengers," said Ms McCall.

Happy Birthday, your Majesty! The Queen celebrates two birthdays each year: her actual birthday on 21st April and her official birthday on a Saturday in June. Official celebrations to mark Sovereigns' birthdays have often been held on a day other than the actual birthday, usually in May or June when there was a greater likelihood of good weather for the Birthday Parade, also known as Trooping the Colour. The Queen usually spends her actual birthday privately, but the occasion is marked publicly by a 21-gun salute in Gibraltar as well as gun salutes in central London: a 21-gun salute in Windsor

Great Park, a 41-gun salute in Hyde Park and a 62-gun salute at the Tower of London.

On her official birthday, Her Majesty is joined by other members of the Royal Family at the spectacular Trooping the Colour parade which follows a route between Buckingham Palace, The Mall and Horseguards’ Parade.

HM The Queen’s Birthday is celebrated at embassies and the Offices of Governors around the World.

“Sheer madness” to stop foreign students coming to the UK says entrepreneur split over four buildings in landscaped surroundings.

The King of Clean, British inventor and entrepreneur Sir James Dyson has slammed the UK's immigration rules, calling them "sheer madness" saying that around 90% of researchers at British universities come from overseas and "we ought to make them more welcome". Best known for his innovative vacuum cleaners, he made

the comments on Sky News after Dyson had unveiled plans to create 3,000 new jobs for highly skilled engineers. The technology giant wants to double the size of its research centre, thanks to a whopping £250m ($419m, €306m) investment. The firm explained that a new technology campus at its Malmesbury site in Wiltshire would include research and development laboratories

The Home Office said: "There is no limit on the number of graduates who can stay in the UK, as long as they get a graduate level job paying a graduate level salary. Students are given four months in the UK after the end of their course to find a job. This is plenty of time for scientists and engineers whose skills are in high demand. We changed the rules to stop the widespread abuse of the student system – where low quality students would take low skilled jobs just to stay in the country. What we have done instead is build a system that works in the national interest – attracting and retaining talented students and workers to ensure Britain succeeds in the global race.”

Farage party beats the lot in EU votes Challenges abound all round for the three major political parties in the UK following the recent EU Elections to decide the regions MEPS for the next term. Arriving at Southampton’s Guildhall for the South East regional count, you’d have thought UKIP’s Nigel Farage was some kind of rock star by the way he was practically mobbed by News and TV crews from all over Europe, and not a usually disliked member of a political party. UKIP made significant gains in all regions over the usual three of Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Labour parties. Their new share of the seats amounts to around 27%, Labour is on 25% and the Conservatives on 24% with the Lib Dems getting a miserly share of just 7% to the Greens’ 8%. At one point

Lib Dems looked like getting absolutely zero seats with Catherine Bearder being their only survivor. Ms. Bearder said that she put her party’s poor results down to the voters not understanding how the EU works! Following the results a very happy Nigel Farage told reporters that he wanted an In/Out vote “next week” on whether the UK stays in the EU or not. He did say that he didn’t expect to get it though… and he was right! So, the challenge is now on to see who keeps their seats in next year’s general election. With the rumblings as they are it looks like David Cameron’s job is pretty safe at least until after next year’s elections and Nigel Farage appears to be here to stay. Nick Clegg’s position is looking rather less safe.

If you have had any investment dealing with Louis Lucas then please contact us The Wincham Inheritance Tax Protection Strategy is a scheme marketed in Spain by Wincham Investments Limited, a UK company, that claim to ‘remove’ or ‘sidestep’ Spanish Inheritance Tax (ISD) on the death of UK resident owners of Spanish property by transferring your property to a UK limited company. If only life was so easy. To attempt to evade Spanish Taxes by indebting yourself retrospectively is a criminal offence. It is fraudulent and illegal for anyone to attempt to transfer their Spanish assets out of Spain to evade their tax liability – as it is in the UK – so this is not a legal option. Wincham state that you will have a massive tax liability, but this varies throughout Spain. So we strongly recommend that you get a true estimate of any tax liability from a Spanish Gestoria, before making plans to mitigate it. Our Action Group have exchanged many emails requesting details of their legality in Spain which they have failed to furnish. We have therefore listed them on our website with copies of all email exchanges between Wincham and the CDSAG. www.costaaction.co.uk

We strongly advise that you take a second professional opinion. They are not regulated for financial business in Spain by either the CNMV or the UK FSA with a current passport to Spain. Read more on www.costaaction.co.uk. MWM INVESTMENTS are regulated as Financial Advisors, but we are concerned that the only product that they seem to be marketing is an investment promising a return of 8% – without having to pay tax. We feel this is too good to be true, and strongly recommend that you seek a second or third opinion. FEIFA are currently promoting a new Expat Financial Forum, to which they say their members will answer questions from the general public. However, this Federation's founders operated as unregulated Spanish Financial Advisers, and among the ones about whom that we had the most complaints. In our opinion this organisation should be avoided. If you feel you have been cheated or scammed with a financial investment then contact us, we are a registered charity. FATCA AND CRS – What’s it all about? The introduction of FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) with effect from 1st July 2014 is aimed at reducing tax evasion by US citizens on their worldwide income and assets. Although FATCA relates to US citizens you need to understand how it will affect Europe … so read on! CRS (Common Reporting Standard) is building on FATCA guidelines to promote worldwide tax transparency between all jurisdictions for all nationalities. Let’s talk a little first about FATCA, which will give a background as to why non US citizens need to understand it, before we discuss CRS.

What is the impact of FATCA? FATCA requires Financial Institutions outside the US to pass information about their US customers to the US tax authorities, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Feature written by Andrea Speed

A 30% withholding tax is imposed on the US source income of any Financial Institution that fails to comply with this requirement. The US is in a strong position to enforce these guidelines due to its trade agreements. On an annual basis, banks and other financial organisations will be required to report information on accounts held directly or indirectly by US Persons. How do I know if I am affected? FATCA legislation will affect both personal and business customers who are treated as a ‘US Person’ for US tax purposes. The FATCA legislation will also affect certain types of businesses with US owners. The term US person includes (but is not limited to): • A citizen of the US, including an individual born in the US but resident in another country (who

has not given up their US citizenship) • A person residing in the US, including US green card holders • Certain persons who spend a significant number of days in the US each year • US Corporations, US Partnerships, US estates and US trusts

My country has privacy or secrecy laws that prohibit sharing customer information with the US Government. Will my information be safeguarded and not shared? No. The FATCA rules require that any US customer is asked to waive their rights under the privacy or secrecy rules so that their information can be reported to the US Government. If they refuse to provide this waiver then the Foreign Financial Institution is required to close the account.

THE NEWS MONTHLY REVIEW Am I only affected if I am a citizen of the US? No. If an individual’s account holds any of the following seven criteria, the Foreign Financial Institution (FFI) may request further information/documentation to determine if you are considered a US Person under FATCA: • US citizenship or US residence • US place of birth • US address including US PO boxes • US telephone number • Repeating payment instructions to pay amounts to a US address or an account maintained in the US • Current Power of Attorney or signatory authority granted to a person with a US address • A ‘care of’ mail address which is the sole address for the account holder What information will be reported to the local tax authority or the IRS? This will depend on the FATCA classification of the customer, but will typically be of a personal nature in relation to the substantial US owners of a business (for example, Name, Address, US Taxpayer Identification Number), and of a financial nature (e.g. Account number, Account balance/Value).

I’m not a US citizen and have no income, interest or growth from the US, so how does FATCA affect me? For most individuals, FATCA will have minimal impact, and there will be no action required. However, the sting in the tail here is that the rules introduced under FATCA have served as a catalyst for the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) to be introduced by the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The primary goal of which is to facilitate automatic exchange of tax information between non US countries. The CRS (Common Reporting Standard) is designed to improve exchange of information which so far only occurs via a specific request from one tax authority to another

Page 25

under a bilateral agreement or tax treaty. The intention is to build on both FATCA and the EU Savings Tax Directive, and although the actual requirements have not yet been finalised, there are several details that the OECD considers crucial for inclusion in order to ensure successful implementation, namely: •The name, address, and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) of each account holder •The account number and account balance or value at year end •Gross dividends, interest, rents, royalties, salaries, wages, annuities, licensing fees, gains and profits and other income paid or credited to the account •Any gross proceeds from the sale or disposition of assets of a type that can produce interest, dividends or capital gains •Income from certain insurance products

Will there be jurisdictions who do not exchange information? Implementation of both FATCA and CRS is a costly exercise for banks and other institutions. Experts believe that some less developed countries will not have the financial resources to implement the required changes. An offshore entity based in Panama would be an example of such a jurisdiction. But it is anticipated that all developed economies seen to be prudent places to hold ones wealth will be supporting the drive for greater worldwide tax transparency.

When will the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) start? It is anticipated that collection of information will begin in 2015, and reporting it to the jurisdictional tax authority will commence in 2016. The Common Reporting Standard has not come as any surprise, the UK adopted a similar effort by entering into agreements with its Crown Dependencies (Isle of Man and Channel Islands) and overseas territories (including Gibraltar) – hence the term ‘UK FATCA’ which you may have heard of. The CRS already has support from over 40 jurisdictions.

At Speed Financial Solutions we specialise in providing bespoke financial planning. We work closely with experienced international tax experts on a case by case basis in order to provide the right solution for our clients. Our Financial Advisers are available for an initial, confidential discussion free of charge either at your home or in our office.

Are foreign exchange transactions subject to reporting? We believe that reporting will not include foreign exchange (FX) payments.

Which organisations will be required to report under CRS? It is anticipated that banks and other financial institutions such as brokers, collective investment vehicles and insurance companies will be required to report.

The Swiss Bankers Association agree that the recommendations from the OECD are a ‘step in the right direction’ but note that the proposal fails to establish a level playing field in all jurisdictions. What is clear though, is that promoting tax transparency and new international standards is a global priority and finding ‘somewhere to hide’ is becoming increasingly difficult for those who continue to try to outwit the authorities!

Please contact us for an appointment if you would like to check that your existing financial arrangements are future proof and will not leave you exposed under the new tax regime. Game of rones’ comes to Andalusia The next series of HBO's hit Games of Thrones could be filmed in Andalusia, according to US ambassador to Spain James Costos. He told the Cadena Ser radio network: “HBO is considering filming in Spain. The negotiations with the Andalusian Film Commission are steady, and there are wonderful locations for filming there, hopefully this coming year for the next season.” HBO has confirmed it is considering Andalusia as a possible additional location for the forthcoming fifth season, said sources at Canal +, which broadcasts the series in Spain.

If a deal is reached, Spain would become the seventh country to host a Game of Thrones shoot. Most of the series is shot in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but scenes have also been filmed in Croatia, Iceland, Morocco and Malta, as well as the United States. Although there is no information about what might be shot in Spain, fans have speculated that Andalusia might be chosen to represent the kingdom of Dorne, which has yet to feature in the series. The United States’ representative in Spain since the middle of last year, Costos is also a former HBO vice-president. “I don’t work

for them anymore and I don’t know the scope of what HBO is thinking in this case, but if you know the show, you will know that it is something important, that it is done on a grand scale, so I hope that it translates into an enormous economic boost,” he told Cadena Ser. He added: “I’m hoping for the best, and bearing in mind the wonderful landscapes that there are here, and how well I know the series Game of Thrones. I have the feeling that when the crew comes, they will find what they are looking for.”

Game of Thrones, an American fantasy drama TV series, is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin's series of fantasy novels, the first of which is titled A Game of Thrones. It premiered on HBO in the United States on April 17th, 2011. The series, set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos at the end of a decadelong summer, interweaves several plot lines. The first follows the members of several noble houses in a civil war for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms. Through its morally ambiguous characters, the series explores the issues of social hierarchy, religion, loyalty, corruption, civil war,

crime, and punishment.

Game of Thrones has attracted record numbers of viewers on HBO and has an exceptionally broad and active international fan base. It has been widely acclaimed by critics, although its frequent use of nudity, violence and sexual violence has attracted criticism. The series has won numerous awards and nominations, including a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Television Series. Game of Thrones roughly follows the three storylines of A Song of Ice and Fire. The novels and their adaptation derive settings, characters and plot elements from much of European history. A principal inspiration for the novels were the English Wars of the Roses (1455-85) between the houses of Lancaster and York. The series also combines such varied inspirations as Hadrian's Wall, the fall of Rome, the legend of Atlantis, Icelandic sagas of the Viking Age, elements from the Hundred Years' War (13371453) and the Italian Renaissance (c. 1400-1500). The Westerosi characters of Game of Thrones speak British English, often (but not consistently) with the accent of the region in England whose geographic location corresponds to that of the character's home region in Westeros. For instance, Eddard Stark, as Warden of the North, speaks in actor Sean Bean's native northern English, while the southern lord Tywin Lannister speaks with a southern accent. Gib complies with EC recommendations Chief Minister Fabian Picardo (pictured below) has formally notified the European Commission of the measures taken by Gibraltar in line with the recommendations it made in November last year.

These include a number of physical infrastructure improvements in the frontier area such as a control point for commercial vehicles at the commercial gate and for each of the vehicle lanes exiting Gibraltar, and the creation of two further vehicular entry channels into Gibraltar. The Gibraltar government has advised the Commission

that a total of 18 new CCTV cameras and four Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) devices have been installed around the border area to allow the law enforcement agencies to track movements both entering and leaving Gibraltar.

Other changes made in order to comply with or facilitate the recommendations made by the Commission include further measures to control the quantity of tobacco that can be purchased and carried by a person in the border area. This will involve a reduction from 1000 to 200 cigarettes. Tobacco duty on 200 cigarettes will be

Tobacco licences are to be amended to reduce the hours during which tobacco can be sold and to limit the amount of cigarettes that can be kept in any retail establishment. Other measures include an increase in the number of Customs Officers. Finally, the Gibraltar government urged the Commission to put an end to the inhumane treatment that EU nationals and others are subjected to at the frontier and to ensure that Madrid complies with the recommendations made to them.

Who was that masked lady? The CHAIN Summer Masked Ball took place at the Valparaiso restaurant Mijas recently. It was a ‘black tie’ event with all the ladies – many of whom wore beautiful long gowns – decked out in their finery and the men, of course at least bettering Britain’s own Mr. 007. Older they may be, but no less attractive when in their dickie bows and there’s always something about a man in proper evening dress…! Champagne, wine and canapés were served on the terrace surrounding the lower pool followed by a four-course meal in the restaurant. Tom sold a huge number of raffle tickets between the main course and dessert, and it wasn’t just the CHAIN people who bought them. Tom persuaded a lot of other

diners to part with their cash in aid of the animals too. There were twenty prizes ranging from pedicure treatments to wine to meals out. An auction took place where a two hour guided buggy safari for two people, donated by Buggy Safari Marbella, went up for grabs. The auction was eventually won by Andrea and her partner who will be ‘getting down and dirty’ on their thrilling safari in the near future. The auction and raffle alone raised just over €500 for the charity and the evening´s grand total was expected to be

around €1000. The rest of the night went brilliantly. Everyone was entertained by ex-Boney M singer Maya, while the Valparaiso’s own opera singer´s Nessun Dorma brought tears to the eyes as usual, and a disco that got everyone up burning off the calories from the dinner. The best of the summer so far!

Welcome back to a favourite place to go Pit Stop was one of those places that was always very busy matter what time of the day or evening you turned up. It had many, many regulars who would go there for a cup of tea or coffee, a snack, lunch or evening meal. The place was famous for its welcome and there was nowhere quite like Pit Stop. It was sadly missed when it closed but now we have some very good news for you… PIT STOP IS BACK! Kevin and Angela have decided that now is the time to give Calahonda back its favourite place to meet friends, old and new, and are re-opening in their Zorba’s premises at the bottom of the Calahonda Strip (Avenida de España).

They will be opening from 10am until late, 7 days a week. So you will be able to pop along any time you like for your usual tea, coffee, their famous breakfasts, snacks, lunches and meals. They have an extensive menu with both British and authentic Greek meals for you to enjoy, plus their €5 English meal deals that are served all day. Their Greek menu, for something a little different from the usual Spanish Fayre, is second to none and genuinely takes you back to the Greek Island as you sit and enjoy your meal – fabulous! And don’t forget, they’re open for Sunday lunches too from 12 noon until 10pm.

Bottled beers from €1 and €2 a pint make this one of the best value places around. They have a large sun terrace to sit on with plenty of umbrellas for shade against the sun to while away the hours, plus a light and airy interior with pool table and live sports if you prefer to be indoors. And with free wi-fi, what more could you want? Kevin and Angela are waiting to welcome back their old customers, plus new people who are sure to join the ranks of their regulars in this friendly family venue. For more information, call Kevin or Angela on 633 197 846

The annual trip to Morocco that has become so popular in recent years is being organised by Jo and Derek again for later this year.

With trips to Tangier, Fez and Marrakesh – not forgetting that this trip includes a journey on the Marrakesh Express – no wonder this gets booked up quickly. People who have gone on the trip for the past couple of years have marvelled at what great value for money this particular excursion is and how comfortable the hotels chosen are. The whole experience is definitely one not to be missed.

We will have more about the trip next month but, in the meantime, for further information contact Jo or Derek Rawnsley on 695 430 160.

At least we didn’t get nil point this year Austrian drag act Conchita Wurst has been crowned the winner of the 59th annual Eurovision Song Contest held in Denmark's capital, Copenhagen. The singer, whose real name is Tom Neuwirth, won with the song Rise Like a Phoenix, collecting 290 points. The Netherlands finished second with 238 points, with Sweden in third place with 218 points. The UK's Molly SmittenDownes came 17th, with 40 points for her song Children of the Universe. It is the first time Austria has won the contest since 1966, and only the second time the country has competed in the final in the past 10 years as it

either did not participate or qualify. Wurst had been the second favourite to win behind Sweden going in to the competition, with many predicting the act could be too divisive among voters. However she was the clear winner, with her victory announced after 34 of the 37 countries had submitted their scores. Collecting her trophy on stage the singer said: "This night is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom. You know who you are – we are unity and we are unstoppable." Speaking backstage later, Wurst said she felt Europe had taken a stand by voting her the winner. "I dream of a world

where we don't have to talk about unnecessary things like sexuality, who you love. I felt like tonight Europe showed that we are a community of respect and tolerance," she said. Smitten-Downes, who closed the performances, had been tipped to score highly with bookmakers placing her in the top five. She received points from only nine countries: San Marino, Denmark, Malta, Iceland, Norway, Ireland, Spain, Belgium and Georgia. Her result was still better than the UK's entry last year, when Bonnie Tyler finished 19th on the final scoreboard with 23 points.

Got a spare £100m?

Most people will never have heard of cosmetic dental surgeon James Hull, 53, who made a fortune after founding James Hull Associates way back in 1987 and became the market leader in Cosmetic Dentistry including teeth whitening, veneers and implants. What you may know is his car collection. James Hull has battled cancer three times in the past four years, earning him the name Lazarus from his friends and, because of his health issues, has just decided to put his huge collection – the biggest UK classic car collection – up for sale. It is expected to amass a cool £100 million. Over the past decade, prices for classic cars have gone through the roof, outperforming every other investment and sending the value of the collection soaring. The cars have been kept in a number of warehouses and span over 80 years-worth of different models including a Bentley owned by Elton John, Winston Churchill’s Austin and Lord Louis Mountbatten’s Mini Traveller and all are in the most gorgeous condition. Turn on the lights in his warehouses and the place positively sparkles with these one-of-akind gems. Also within the collection is a Sinclair C5 from the 1980s, British Camper vans from the 40s, 50s and 60s, and a Humber that was owned by the judge presiding over the infamous Profumo Affair that brought down a Government in 1961. His 4x4 section includes early Land Rovers and pristine classic Range Rovers. He now owns more than 450 classics, ranging from multi-million pound Jaguars through to Morris Minors. Covering everything from the 1930s his Jaguar D-Type is worth £4 million plus, Mike Hailwood’s (former British world motorcycle champion) 1961 E-Type, the C-Type is also worth millions, while one can only speculate what his super-rare XKSS will make – and that’s just some of the Jags! So what’s the catch? Dr. Hull is only willing to sell the collection as one lot so there are not many people around that will be making an offer although he says that there has been a ‘huge amount of interest’ from private buyers and consortiums from around the world. However, it is hoped that the collection will remain in the UK. The collection, located in Herefordshire, is made up of 457 classic vehicles, 365 pedal cars and 300 pieces of memorabilia including model aircraft from WW1 and WW2.

...you don’t have to be a chef!

Roasted tomato, basil & Parmesan quiche Ingredients:

• • • • • •

300g cherry tomatoes drizzle olive oil 50g Parmesan (or vegetarian alternative), grated 2 eggs 284ml pot double cream handful basil leaves, shredded, plus a few small ones left whole for scattering

Serves 8

For the pastry

280g plain flour, plus extra for dusting • 140g cold butter, cut into pieces

Directions 1. To make the pastry, tip the flour and butter into a bowl, then rub together with your fingertips until completely mixed and crumbly. Add 8 tbsp cold water, then bring everything together with your hands until just combined. Roll into a ball and use straight away or chill for up to 2 days. The pastry can also be frozen for up to a month. 2. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to a round about 5cm larger than a 25cm tin. Use your rolling pin to lift it up, then drape over the tart case so there is an overhang of pastry on the sides. Using a small ball of pastry scraps, push the pastry into the corners of the tin. Chill in the fridge or freezer for 20 mins. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. 3. In a small roasting tin, drizzle the tomatoes with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Put the tomatoes in a low shelf of the oven.

4. Lightly prick the base of the tart with a fork, line the tart case with a large circle of greaseproof paper or foil, then fill with baking beans. Blind-bake the tart for 20 mins, remove the paper and beans, then continue to cook for 510 mins until biscuit brown. 5. When you remove the tart case from the oven, take out the tomatoes, too. 6. While the tart is cooking, beat the eggs in a large bowl. Gradually add the cream, then stir in the basil and season. When the case is ready, sprinkle half the cheese over the base, scatter over the tomatoes, pour over the cream mix, then finally scatter over the rest of the cheese. 7. Bake for 20-25 mins until set and golden brown. Leave to cool in the case, trim the edges of the pastry, then remove from the tin. Scatter over the remaining basil and serve in slices.

Now, let me ask you a question. What is the difference between un coche nuevo and un nuevo coche?

If you buy un coche nuevo it is brand new. If you buy un nuevo coche it is new for you. So let's have a look at some other ways of talking about new things.

A new born babe is un recién nacido and a newcomer is un recién llegado. A newly married couple is los recién casados. If something is like new it is como nuevo.

And to ask "What's new?" you can use "Qué hay de nuevo? As we know The News is las noticias . Una buena noticia is good news and una mala noticia is bad news. And to end with a little proverb No hay nada nuevo bajo el sol which translates as there is nothing new under the sun. Hasta la próxima, Valerie

Common Law Couples and Inheritance in Spain In Spanish law when two people are living together as a Common Law Couple, in the case of the death of one of the partners the surviving cohabiting partner of the deceased party has no recognised rights in intestate succession, (inheritance without a will), unlike the surviving spouse of a marriage. For married couples there are legal regulations already in place for the division of the assets specified in the Civil Code. As these regulations do not take in to account Common Law Couples it is important to make a will to ensure that your assets are distributed according to the wishes of each partner. Even though in some Autonomous Communities, some couples enjoy some rights "mortis causa" the making of a will avoids any misunderstanding regarding the distribution of assets of a deceased partner.

In Andalusia, the "Law 5/ 2002 of 16 December, Common Law Couples", where the union of two people regardless of their sexual orientation, who coexist stably in a relationship equivalent to wedded affection are recognised as Domestic Partners. For the purposes of compliance to this Act, at least one partner must have their habitual residence in a municipality in Andalusia. This Act however, exempts any partners of: • Emancipated minors. • Anyone connected by marriage or by a registered domestic partnership to another person. • Direct blood relatives by birth or adoption. • Relatives that have consanguinity in the second degree. Cohabiting heterosexuals or homosexuals can register in the Register of Partners, (Registro de Parejas de Hecho), in the local Town Hall. In order to register documentary proof of the following should be presented at the time of application – personal identification, marital status, and proof of habitual residence in a municipality in Andalusia together with a signed statement of intent to form a couple.

Once registered, Domestic Partners will be entitled to all of the rights accorded to married couples at municipal and at regional levels within the province of Andalucía. However, in common law in Andalucía, Domestic Couples do not actually have any hereditary rights so it is important to make a will.

Feature written by Manilva Solicitors

Under Spanish law, married couples and unmarried couples cannot be considered similar. Intestate married couples may inherit from spouses, whereas unmarried couples, without a will, have no right to inherit – this obviously leads to complications for the surviving partners in this type of relationship. The most common example is a couple who has lived together all their adult lives without marrying, and although one of them may have purchased the property, the other would be involved in the maintenance and upkeep of the property, or may have worked at home. In this situation, the surviving person has no means to claim their legal rights to any assets in the name of the cohabiting partner, and are considered to be in a weak position legally.

As we mentioned previously, an economically viable solution would be to make a will now, (only 150 euros all inclusive). A will would clarify which assets the surviving partner inherits, and should include any clauses necessary to protect the partner’s interests. This way the surviving partner is not left to resolve all of the problems, without legal rights or protection. Other possible options to resolve this dilemma are to specify the above points when registering as a Domestic Couple, or to pledge any assets in front of a Public Notary. Also it is vital to establish co-ownership when purchasing a property.

The rights of Domestic Couples compared to those of Married Couples can vary to a greater or lesser extent in other regions such as the Basque Country, Catalonia, Navarra and the Balearic Community. June is the month of the unexpected, things that surprise you, that you could never have imagined would occur – do. Situations will be created that will enable you to speed up the course of your plans. Be careful not to be too demanding with a loved one, your impatience may get to someone close, they will need more time than you to come to terms with something. Collaborations will prove to be profitable. If it seems towards the end of June that nothing is moving as fast as you would like, then have patience, solutions will be found and the end result will be more satisfying than you could have imagined. If you are looking for new opportunities or a new job then this month there will be a chance for expansion – a promotion or profitable long term change could be on the cards. It is not all down to luck but it does play its part and fortunately for you Jupiter is shining down on you right now. A love relationship is set to flourish and you may think of making it a more permanent feature in your life. Mutual understanding seems easy in June, even if you are unattached; there are contacts that enter your life that could prove to be extremely interesting. Keep those expectations within the realms of ‘normal’ and you will not be disappointed particularly when it comes to money issues. This is because tension and stress seem to be involved when this subject is under scrutiny. Family and the material side of your life are your main focus, especially the younger generation, with whom you will find that you share a unique affinity. By 18th June if you are dealing with contracts make sure you double check the facts and figures as you could be a bit absent minded in the last two weeks of this month. On the monetary front June will allow you to get on with the things that you have wanted to for so long, especially if you have put the effort in over the previous two months, positive and productive days are ahead. There could be news of a change on the horizon and socially this will be a time of fun and pulling together with those of similar goals. On the relationship front your partner is finding a new level of relating to you that matches your ideals, allowing you to feel more content. Take your time when making decisions this month especially around 24th June as impulsive moves on your part could end up being hard to reverse. You could find yourself attracted to someone whom you look up to in some way or who has a high social status, these friendships could work wonders for your own personal advancement. Your ambitions are likely to become a bit more daring particularly within your career. Make sure you get adequate rest this month as you have had a tendency for overdoing it lately and some indulgences may have taken a toll.

A change in the usual routine is on the cards and you will welcome the variety that now enters your life. Your daily existence has been given a breath of fresh air and your love life is heating up, becoming warmer and sensual. This is a time of re-balance, allowing your body to get adequate recuperation, to put your relationships back on track so that they bring even more stability and satisfaction. Where your life has recently known extremes, this month is all about bringing it all into harmony.

We see a bold courageous Libra this month and normally you are so tactful and diplomatic, this is likely to surprise those close to you. Unexpected situations could arise especially within your love life; however, you will also be exerting yourself and are far more confident in this area. Your family and close friends become extremely important to you and perhaps you learn to open up and put more trust their way. This is a month for seeing yourself with more clarity, realising what is important to you. Special attention will be coming from you towards someone you love and you will feel compelled to take the time to enhance this area of your life. This influence will continue throughout most of June until about 23rd. Your finances will receive a boost and you will feel as though you have more freedom to use your money as you wish. The worries of the past few months will slowly be receding and from 24th June you will be changing your lifestyle considerably to reflect your changing personality and inner drives.

Up until the 17th June it is time to focus on your own requirements and needs, this still means keeping up commitments to others but putting your own wants first in line with your specific goals. From 25th June the motion changes and someone close to you will need some support and you may have to put some of your plans on the back burner. It is up to you at that time to keep an eager eye on the long term goal and not be put off or dissuaded in any way from achieving that which you know will be a success. Your skills of observation have become heightened this month and this will allow you to use your sharpness of mind and disciplined approach to make things happen. You have great insight to move ahead and can see what needs to be done long before those around you. When it comes to relationships keep the communication lines of honesty well open and make the time to get things off your chest if you need to – it will bring you both closer together in the long run. There could be the possibility of meeting someone special this June; the chance of flirtatious encounters is high, leading to romantic and sensual liaisons. This is a month of frivolous fun and enjoyment where you can let your hair down without too much worry about tomorrow. There is an infectious optimism about you that is awakening your thirst for life and giving an appealing factor for those in your company. Be spontaneous and you will enjoy being able to go with the flow. This will enhance your creativity and inspire your mind. The beginning of June could bring a few tensions within your family circle, making you feel a need to be somewhere else. However, this is a good period for mending things and negotiating contracts, even DIY will be easier at this point. Your personal life is more poignant than your career right now. It is possible that you will work from home and will need the support of a family member to assist your new role. By mid June you will be craving some space to allow a bit of peace and harmony to flood in and help rebalance your emotions.

We hope you have enjoyed your first batch of puzzles and like the new “Three Minute” crosswords (OK, I have to admit they took me a lot longer than three minutes and I like to do crosswords) and the quiz. Beware some answers may follow US spelling – just to add to the challenge! I will have a look for a good place to source cryptic crosswords for next month. Come back John Birch who used to do our cryptic puzzles for us, after a bottle of gin, he said – all is forgiven. You will find all of the answers on page 83 as we had lots of people telling us they didn’t want them on the same pages as the puzzles because they were “forced to cheat”, so no cheating from now on unless it’s absolutely necessary! More next month. Enjoy! Kym Wickham

THE NEWS MONTHLY REVIEW

Opinion

Page 63

There has been a lot written recently in one of the free newspapers about a radio presenter on the Costa del Sol. The News, as a newspaper, did not follow up on any of the accusations as we could not verify whether the statements therein were true or false. At no time did The News publish anything we could not verify and Mr Barry Nathan has asked The News Monthly magazine to publish the following open letter on his behalf:

Statement

I have to refute in the strongest terms the lies published about me by The Olive Press newspaper.

They made no attempt to investigate my oft-stated lack of involvement with Nigel Goldman´s investment business, nor did they check out the many erroneous facts which the articles contained. Although I passed three messages to the editor Jon Clarke stating I would answer any questions about Mr Goldman and myself, having been told by a mutual friend that he was suspicious of my involvement, no one called or approached me. The messages were passed to Mr Martyn Wood (who was asked for information about me by the editor of Olive Press) to Mr Giles Brown, who was both a presenter at TRE Radio and a journalist at The Olive Press, and a mutual friend, Mr Stephen Howes – who contacted Mr Clarke by ´phone whilst I was present to pass on the message. I have since received written confirmation from Mr Goldman that I was in no way involved in his investment business.

The only time I was called was in my car on the Tuesday prior to publication, by a man called Tom, who told me I was a liar, when I assured him I was not involved with Mr. Goldman´s investment company. I replied that as he felt that, there was no point in answering any other questions as I would not be believed. As it is their policy to record all telephone calls, this can be verified by the newspaper.

Over the many years I have lived in Spain, I have never had any problem either with an individual or a company. My record is totally unblemished – as it was in the UK.

I assisted Nigel Goldman in attending and writing restaurant reviews for the Euro Weekly News. The column was extremely well received by the readership. I have been accused of having some dining guests – out of the many hundreds who attended – who were criminals. Untrue. No invited guest faced any charges at the time they featured and we had no

knowledge whatsoever of any case pending against them. (They would have resisted being photographed if they were wanted.) No fee was charged for any review – nor received by us, although some restaurants waived the bill.

My English bank account did receive £10,000 sterling arranged by Mr Goldman. As he was trading coins very successfully at the time – sometimes 300 per day – with values up to €50,000 per coin – he was receiving funds from all over the world. The transfer was, the same day, put into my trading platform which was handled by Mr Goldman (It later transpired the money was sent by a Mr Whitton.) My trading platform could only receive funds from my own bank. Mr Goldman traded this account – with varying success.

With regard to Mr Richard Pope, when he was eventually wanted by American authorities, he explained to me the circumstances, and showed genuine contrition for his past involvement. All his assets were then declared to the relevant US investigators, and he voluntarily waived extradition proceedings, returning to face trial. His contrition and behaviour was rewarded in a sentence of 57 months – much less than the other persons involved. I travelled to the US and spoke in court of his genuine contrition.

Mr Laurence Levey was – to my knowledge – a successful jeweller in the Liverpool area with 4 stores. The other two gentlemen I knew only cursorily.

The stress of the publication of the unfounded allegations has resulted in my suffering deep depression, anxiety and inability to sleep. I have also – by agreement – temporarily ceased to broadcast on TRE. (I was not suspended, as was reported by the Olive Press.) I am currently taking legal action, both civil and penal, against The Olive Press for their baseless defamation of my character. I will be seeking a full retraction, apology and substantial damages.

Hero eyesight Doctor for Himalayas In Bhutan, there are only eight ophthalmologists. With a population of roughly 750,000, that’s about 90,000 patients for each eye doctor.

At Thimphu’s primary hospital – Jigme Dorji Wangchuk Hospital – cataract and retinal patients crowd the opthalmology unit. They’re waiting to see Dr. Kunzang Getshen, fondly known as the “father of eye care” in the country by his colleagues. Dr. Getshen is keenly aware of the limited scope of eye care in Bhutan. But the answer, he says, lies not in just greater funding. Throwing money at the problem doesn’t solve it, he says.

Dr. Getshen is a part of the fashionably-termed group of “social entrepreneurs” – though

he’s been improving eye care in the small Himalayan kingdom for the past 30 years, long before the term was coined. He’s an unusual example of a governmentemployed civil servant (medicine is socialized in Bhutan) who is keen to work with the right partners, not just dole out cash from any donor. Simply reaching the patients, Dr. Kunzang says, is a challenge in such a mountainous country where peaks reach 20,000 feet, and communities are nestled in them. It’s an age-old dilemma of reaching the so-called “last mile”. Rather than merely training more doctors, Dr. Getshen is relying on a network of technicians in remote locations to do the “grunt” work. About 53 such technicians have been dispersed nationwide. They operate out of small hospitals and clinics with barely 20 beds.

Lords

20 Years

Once a month, ophthalmologists such as Dr. Getshen make the trek to do eye camps, easily carrying out up to 30 surgeries a day easily. With all the prep work completed, Dr. Getshen can operate on more patients in a single day. And the costs are kept low: for instance, a cataract surgery is roughly 500 Rupees, 300 of which is spent on lenses (that’s under $10 for surgery, and $6 for lenses). Even after 33 years of service, Dr. Getshen jokes that he makes “peanuts” – or 52,000 Rupees – a month (roughly $850.00). “And it’s not glamorous work,” he laughs. He admits that his colleagues in India, with whom he studied with in Bombay in grad school, are “minting” money now.

New mini dialysis unit for babies licenced and saving children’s lives in Italy A new dialysis machine has been developed in Italy that is specific to the needs of babies. Normally speaking, doctors have to adapt an adult machine with varying degrees of success but, last year, the new machine saved a newborn baby girl according to reports.

Around 2% of hospitalised infants need dialysis but the machine could be life-saving according to Dr. Heather Lambert, spokeswoman for the British Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Care. Dr Lambert and her colleagues at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle have been working on similar devices.

The new machine is meant for babies under 10 kilos and was devised by Dr. Claudio Ronco and his team at the San Bortola Hospital in Vicenza, Italy. He said that they received their first patient, a three-day-old baby girl with multiple organ failure just weeks after they got their licence to use the machine. He said: "Her parents had already reserved the funeral." Instead, the baby was treated for nearly a month.

She and her parents recently paid Ronco a visit. “The baby was crying like crazy because she was hungry, but she's doing great," Ronco added. The little girl has mild kidney problems

and needs vitamin D supplements but is otherwise growing normally, he said. Since then, about 10 other babies have been treated with the machine across Europe. The dialysis machines cost 35,000 euros ($47,801) and Ronco does not profit from their sales.

"This is a pretty major advance for the smallest infants," said Dr. Bethany Foster, an associate professor of pediatrics at the Montreal Children's Hospital in Canada, who co-authored an accompanying commentary. "I can't imagine the baby they (treated) would have survived with the current technology." Foster emphasised that doctors should be cautious in deciding which babies to treat. "You have to be especially vigilant with very small babies because what you're often doing amounts to heroic treatment," Foster said. "We need to be careful that we don't just do things because we can."

Letters to Calvin & Sue Health & Beauty

Every week Calvin and Sue will be here to answer all your hair and beauty questions and help to solve any problems you may have: Dear Calvin, There has been a recent article in The Daily Mail that you will get better results by conditioning your hair first before you shampoo. What is your opinion on this? Colin King Dear Colin, I saw the article you have mentioned and to be honest it goes against everything that I have been taught over the years. I worked as an educator for Redken for several years and when teaching other hairdressers we advised that the shampoo was the most important as it nourishes the hair when the cuticle is opened by the water, and that the conditioner actually closes the cuticle back down and gives the hair a smooth feeling. So I will be honest and say that I don't really know how this other method could be of benefit. I have done some experimenting with clients with mixed results. Some said it felt nicer but needed washing quicker, others said it gave more body, while still others said it made their hair limp and it went greasy very quickly. I think it is a case of some will like the result and others won’t. Personally I don't think it will catch on.

Dear Calvin, I had a baby six months ago and during my pregnancy my hair was fantastic, but now I am finding it is lank and thinning which worries me. Debs, Mijas

Dear Debs, Often women find their hair is much better when they are pregnant. A lot of it is to do with the hormone level in your body, and often you are more conscious of having a healthier diet. After the birth, especially if you are breast feeding, the baby takes the goodness from you, plus you are tired and a little bit stressed to start with. This all has an effect on your hair. Worrying about the hair loss will not help and it will recover. For any questions abouot your hair call Calvin on 633 733 375 or email him at calton1@hotmail.com or pop into his salon in Centro Nordico, on the Carretera de Mijas, Km4.5

Dear Sue Sometimes when I look at my skin I see moles and freckles that have not been there before. Do I need to see a doctor or as a beauty therapist are you qualified to recognise abnormalities. Sandy, Las Lagunas Dear Sandy Over the years I have unfortunately seen many cases of skin cancer and if I notice any change on a client's skin I will insist they visit a doctor to have it checked out. As a rule of thumb follow the A.B.C.D.E. A. Asymmetry. If the sides of the mole or freckle are not equal, see your doctor B. Border. If they have rough edges, see your doctor C. Colour. If there is a colour change, see your doctor D. Diameter. If the mole or freckle is larger than 6mm, see your doctor E. Evolving. Any change to a mole or freckle such as itching, change of colour, getting bigger, see your doctor. If you have any worries do consult a doctor. They won't think that you have wasted their time and it could save your life!

Dear Sue I have an extremely sensitive skin and seem to be allergic to whatever creams I try. This is, of course, not stopping me age and I can't find a cream to use. What can I do? Lucy, Fuengirola

Dear Lucy This is not an uncommon problem and it is easily treatable. We start with using a cream to repair and protect your skin. This we use for a few weeks until the skin is calm and comfortable. Then we add a hydra allergic serum to help your skin to become less sensitive. After a while we can introduce creams for anti-aging on top of the serum. Eventually we should be able to stop using the serum and it will have done it's job and desensitised your skin. For any beauty questions you have, email Sue at aniathome05@hotmail.co.uk or call her on 952 473 681

THE NEWS MONTHLY REVIEW

Legal Matters from De Cotta Law A Supreme Court decision in May has confirmed previous case law in Spain about developer obligations to off-plan purchasers. Unless a contract to purchase a property specifically states otherwise, the purchaser has the right to rescind the contract if the developer asks for completion and does not have the License of First Occupation. The courts have emphasised the purchaser cannot contract basic utilities in his or her own name without this document issued by the Town Hall. It is therefore held to be an essential element in protecting the purchaser’s right to enter into occupation with the utilities required to live in the property.

There have been a large number of such claims but a problem faced by some off-plan purchasers is that the developer in some of these cases has now gone into liquidation during the economic crisis. They may therefore win a pyrrhic victory as they may be entitled to rescind or cancel the contract but find they are tied up in litigation to claim the monies owing to them. Insolvency proceedings where the developer has “gone bust” are rather intimidating for purchasers but some have been fortunate to be offered the return of their deposit monies directly by banks who have taken over the developments. This can be done by attending

the notary if an offer is made to settle. However in many cases it is necessary to be formally represented before the court to get any payment that is finally made to creditors. Even if that final payment only represents a percentage of the monies invested it is still better than losing all of the funds placed with the developer. For more information about property law and litigation, please feel free to contact De Cotta Law on: Tel.: +34 952 527 014 Fax: +34 952 523 428 Email: nerja@decottalaw.net Nerja Office: Calle Diputación 11 29780 Nerja

Family, children, charity or the dogs home?

This is not an entirely flippant title for this article and it hopefully will make you read on! It is an old adage from UK lawyers who deal with wills that some people would prefer to leave their assets to Battersea Dogs home than to their children.

The fact is that in England as in a number of other common law jurisdictions a person has free disposition of their assets. In England there was no legal protection for anyone economically dependent on a person who cut them out of their will until 1975 when the Inheritance and Family Dependants Act came into force. This law was brought in to protect a husband, wife, child or other person who had been

relying on an income, say for day-to-day living or for education so that they could claim against the estate if they had been left nothing or excluded.

In many other countries such as Spain a person has obligatory heirs and in Spain you must leave 2/3 of your estate to your children. Scotland has a concept of prior rights for spouses and children but the English and Welsh legal system does not. Most English people do leave their assets to each other and then pass them on to the children. Where there is no family to leave property to you can leave your assets and property to a charity and this can be done in a

Spanish form will signed before a notary public.

It is always a good idea to get advice on the tax position for the family or heirs who would receive your assets and property particularly for nonresident property owners as there is no spouse exemption from inheritance tax. Charities do not have to pay any tax on gifts they receive but it is important to identify the charity with its registered number and full address.

For more information about your requirements for a Will in Spain, and how best to protect your assets in UK, Spain and abroad, please book a private consultation with De Cotta Law.

Alison Moyet tells of recovery from illness on Desert Island Discs Alison Moyet has described how a simple slip-up during a conversation with fellow singer Elvis Costello led to her being housebound for years with agoraphobia. A real case of footin-mouth. The former Yazoo star, who has sold more than 20 million records, also revealed she has smashed all her gold discs and recently had everything deleted from her computer including emails and demos of new songs. Appearing on Desert Island Discs on Radio 4, she described Costello as her "idol" and chose one of his songs – a cover of a track by country rockers The Flying Burrito Brothers – among her eight discs. She told host Kirsty Young: "I'd gone to see him play in Southend and he'd been brilliant, he'd sung this two hour set and he was formidable. I absolutely loved it and there was a party back at Dr. Feelgood's house that he went to and I'd been invited to and there

he was and he was lovely, he was charming and I wanted to say to him 'you were wonderful' and all these wonderful descriptions of him and what came out of my mouth was 'you dragged that out a bit, didn't you?' Once I did that, I just felt I didn't trust myself in polite society". She said she felt so bad about her comment that she bought all Costello's subsequent records but "couldn't listen to them". Moyet said the condition "feels very normal", adding: "It's outside that feels odd and there was years I didn't go out beyond working." She said the appeal of a desert island would include the chance to "get away from any kind of mail, any kind of inbox, any kind of correspondence ". She said: "A year ago I took my computer to be mended and just told them to wipe everything without saving anything. That's my whole life, everything, my contacts, everything, my diary,

everything gone, my songs, my demos, the lot because I was really excited about having an empty inbox." The singer, who said much of her recovery was down to her second husband, chose a bath as her luxury item because she could sleep in it as well as wash and collect rain water. Her other tracks included Cilla Black's version of Anyone Who Had A Heart and Cry Baby by Janis Joplin.

At last! A comfortable feet summer

Traditionally we have hobbled throughout the hot summer months here in Spain on high heeled sandals – and yes some are quite beautiful – even when our feet have swollen and you think your toes might possibly fall off if you don’t get those shoes off your feet RIGHT NOW!

However, this season’s rage for footwear is, yes, flatties such as those that up to now have been called ugly and destined for hippie types only, the Berkenstock. You don’t have to go the whole hog and buy expensive brands if your budget is tight, of course, as we are lucky to have access to a large footwear industry here in Spain so shoes are relatively cheap even for high quality merchandise.

Wear them with a short to knee length skirt, fitted jeans or leggings with a feminine top and you can not only be comfortable for once but also look amazing. The trend is shooting through the States by storm where these will cost anything from $60 to $6,000 (who on this planet would pay $6,000 for a pair of flat sandals?!). Here in Spain you won’t have to pay anything like that kind of money so have a browse through what seems like the hundreds of shoe shops we have locally and enjoy your summer in comfort.

Masterchef winner 2104

This year’s winner of the Masterchef 2014 culinary competition hosted by judges John Torrode and Gregg Wallace is former hotel manager and 33year-old mother-of-one Ping Coombes after eight weeks of challenges. But Ping said that, despite the accolade, she still does not expect her mother to let her do the cooking. During the show she spent time in Barcelona which she says was the time she loved the best on the show (apart from winning, of course!) She said of her time here in Spain: "Spain really does bring something out in me. Spain seemingly opened her arms and showed me her magic. I loved every moment especially cooking for Ferran Adria and I felt that anything was possible. Apart from my wedding and the birth of my daughter, the time I spent in Spain was truly magical." Born in a small Malaysian town, Ipoh, she said: "The last time I felt such emotion was when my daughter was born. Something that you don't get to experience a lot. Pure joy and pure bliss that feels incredible. Epic. My mother will be really proud I'm sure. I say

this a lot but she still won't let me in her kitchen." She said that she started cooking while at university and now lives with her husband, Andred and 18-monthold Alexa. Starting as one of 60 contestants, Ping made her way through to the last three after hearing comments from Australian celebrity chef Torode such as eating the winner's food made his heart thump. "For me Ping is a cook's cook, she gets her head down and she works really, really hard to make sure she reaches her goal," he said. "She is pretty amazing." Veteran judge Wallace added: "She inspires me, she excites me. And she cares so much. Rarely have I seen someone whose repertoire can span whole continents." In the final she beat fellow cooks Luke Owen and Jack Lucas throughout the decisive lastweek. Her winning menu featured her personal take on a Chinese wonton dumpling soup, a main of nasi lemak rice from her native Malaysia in a coconut and pandan sauce and a coconut and vanilla panna cotta for dessert.

Flash IPTV - your one-stop shop for all your TV needs FLASH IPTV is a communications company with years of experience on the coast that can offer uninterrupted BBC and ITV channels. Having been in business as Total Tec computer shop, they have branched out with FLASH IPTV to offer an unrivalled service for all your TV channels. The company is based in their showroom in Benalmadena.

Run by Managers Richard Payne and Sonya Davies, Richard has been in the process of developing FLASH IPTV’s box for the past 12 months to minimise any technical complications before embarking on supplying their customers. He says: “People need to go with a strong, reputable company with proper service and support that can back them up, which we do. Once the box is switched on, buyers are presented with a TV guide where they simply select the desired channel. The guides and channel links are run and kept updated by us, which means maximum support.”

Sonya explained: “With TV channels no longer available there’s big panic. We are offering people a customised product that is affordable and

as user-friendly as possible.”

In fact, one of IPTV’s distinctive qualities is their customer support, both before and after purchasing. Everyone is welcome to go along to the showroom for a free demonstration, chat and advice from their friendly staff who will help you choose the right system for you from as little as €125. Sonya says: “We’re one of the only local showrooms where customers can come in and try the boxes before they buy,” adding: “We’re for our customers. We know the technical side of things and we won’t sell something we know won’t work. And any follow-up needs can be carried out both here on the showroom premises or

remotely when necessary.”

FLASH IPTV works in conjunction with internet providers to ensure they can offer full package deals for internet plus IPTV channel services when required. FLASH IPTV Calle Monteculo (off Avenida de Tivoli, near the Teleferico cable car), Benalmadena Open Monday to Friday 9:30am – 6:30pm Saturday 9:30am – 2pm

e annual PAD Dog Show success The sun shone, people were laughing and having a good time and there was loads of great music. Where were we? Why, the PAD annual dog show of course! There was plenty of time to browse the stalls while partaking of a delicious bacon sarnie and a cup of tea or coffee. There was a tombola and a raffle, plenty of bits and pieces to buy for your best friend on four legs and Lee Jay supplied the music for the day. The winners were: Best dog in fancy dress and little Coco the Yorkie looked wonderful in her Bumble Bee outfit and went home with a certificate, medal and plaque for her efforts. Next was Best puppy and we all have to admit there’s nothing cuter. Bruno at 6 months is a huge harlequin-coloured Mastin. He took first place with his owner, Sally, while Benjy who is a beautiful black Spaniel, with owner John, was second but, really, they were both as wonderful as each other. The third class was for the best small dog under 12 kilos where there were a number of entrants. PAD dog Joe who is small, black and tan, and is looking for a home came first, Greta came second while Sylvie, came third. The fourth category was the best medium sized dog, 12–30kg, Five of these dogs had been rescue dogs and now have loving homes. First for the prize was Amber, a quite beautiful dark grey brindled greyhound followed by shiny black Ruby then in third place was the lovely Sam. For the fifth and last category dedicated to the size of the dogs, we had Harry, a golden retriever who happily pranced around the ring for everybody to see how

lovely and happy he was – he was obviously enjoying himself and looked as though he had a huge smile on his face. Best veteran of 9 years or older. First prize went to Beatta who is a lovely, perky, chunky little terrier type despite her age of 15+ and health problems, second place went to Randy, a rather handsome dog who is obviously well loved and cared for, and in third place was the wonderful Scruffy. Now for the fun bit – Best Trick. Madra who won first prize sat, stayed, got arrested, put her hands up then played dead. Ruby, in second place, a medium sized long, silky haired girl played peek-a-boo with her owner then wove her way through his legs as he walked, and held her paw up while she walked along when commanded to limp. Thirdly we had the two black labs, Sam and Ellie. Both were on a lead but as their owner took Sam’s lead, Sam took Ellie’s lead and they took each other for a walk. Lastly, of course as in all good dog shows, we had the Best in Show to decide upon (pictured below). With all the excellent dogs from all the categories to choose from this was an almost impossible task for us judges to decide upon. We had Coco, Bruno, Joe, Amber, Harry, Beata and Madra to try and decide who was the ultimate dog in show. It would have been lovely to have been able to give them all a very deserving first prize. They had all been so brilliantly

behaved while the show was in progress. There were no growls and grumbles from them and their behaviour was better than I’ve seen coming from some adults (although at the show, all adults were very well behaved too, of course!). But a decision had to be made for first, second and third. Amber, the absolutely beautiful dark haired greyhound was Best In Show, followed by PAD’s lovely very own little Joe who needs a home, and in third place was the gorgeous Harry, the golden retriever. Thanks go to the Mijas Foreigners department staff for once again giving up their weekend to come along to the show and for organising the venue for PAD – and last, but by no means least, to PAD president Lisa and her small army of ladies and gentlemen, including Lynne on the teas (!) and Gil who was one of my fellow judges this year for their time and effort putting on this show, the autumn fair and all the other fundraising events throughout the year. We thank you for the good times we have with you and on behalf of all the animals you rescue, look after and then find them wonderful, new, loving homes, big licks all round!!

Health & Beauty Feature Dialysis Centre makes it better for patients The dialysis centre of the Axarquia region is located on the seafront of Torre del Mar, treating about 80 patients three times each week, taking four to four and a half hours a session, from different municipalities of the region. From the very beginning staff at the centre are warm, and try to make our patients feel relaxed. We really go out of our way to help them in any way we can. It is particularly important for dialysis patients and their families to have a get together with the staff now and then in order to remain physically and mentally refreshed. We started the project with Diaverum a few months ago, and decided to celebrate by having a meal with them. Our goal was to take dialysis patients and their families to a nice place to disconnect from their routine and allow them to spend a pleasant day outside the dialysis room. The staff hope to improve their communication with their families

and bring a smile to those who come here to the centre to have their treatment. We hope it was a day to remember with affection in the future for all of them.

We know our patients, their needs, and their strong desire to live a normal daily life, without being confined by their illness. Our aim is that patients can experience a warm and homely atmosphere with the staff outside the clinic, and when leaving ‘I ENCUENTRO DIAVERUM’, we hope they feel revitalised.

So, on Sunday lunchtime, May 18th, we all got together in Torrox-Costa, Malaga, at the pool bar "El Barco". Around 180 people– including patients, their families and staff – spent an enjoyable, entertaining and family time together. We are hoping this was the first of many such time-out trips. For further information about this project, please contact Nuria or Nanda on 952 544 024 or 952 544 525.

THE NEWS MONTHLY REVIEW

MOTORS

Rosberg reigns in Monaco Nico Rosberg cruised to victory in the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, a result that is destined to exacerbate his relationship with Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Rosberg beat Hamilton to pole position on Saturday after he went off at the Mirabeau corner, and the resulting caution flags prevented a marauding Hamilton from improving. The incident was investigated by the race stewards but no wrong doing was found and Rosberg stayed on pole. their verdict being there was "no evidence of an offence". But Hamilton, Lauda admitted, didn't believe it wasn't deliberate. And nor, it has to be said, did many people within the paddock, even if some said they believed Rosberg was not that kind of guy.

At least four drivers from leading teams said in private that they felt it was obvious from the behaviour of the car, and Rosberg's hand movements on the steering wheel, that he had done it deliberately. Two ex-F1 drivers agreed. If so, he disguised it a lot better than Michael Schumacher, when he deliberately parked his Ferrari at Rascasse in 2006 to prevent title rival Fernando Alonso from taking pole. As for any dirty tricks that may or may not be employed, Lauda said: "You have to be a bastard if you want to win in F1 anyway. No question. And you cannot win being a nice guy.

"Tell me one nice guy out there. Shall we start with Alonso? This is a breed of people who know how to focus 110% and use every trick to blow the other one off, and in the same team it's harder.

Rosberg was never under any threat in the principality as he led every lap to record his

first race win since the opener in Australia and prolong the Mercedes total dominance this season. Hamilton finished second for the sixth successive Mercedes one-two, while Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo came third.

The podium was a frosty place to be as Rosberg, winner in Monaco last year, and Hamilton barely looked at, let alone acknowledged, each other, so the rivalry continues unabated with Rosberg saying “ yes we are friends“ and Hamilton saying it's a “working relationship”. It means Hamilton's run of four successive triumphs is over, with Rosberg leapfrogging the Briton in the standings by four points as the toe-to-toe scrap between the duo continues.

Marquez continues to dominate Marc Marquez rode from tenth to first with still more than half the race to ride during The French MotoGP, as the reigning champion continued his unbeaten season. At 21 years and 90 days, Marquez takes the record of youngest five-in-arow winner from Mike Hailwood, which has stood since 1962, and extended his points lead to 42. Marquez, had announced a new two-year Honda contract just before the event, and is now 42 points clear of team-mate and nearest rival Dani Pedrosa in the championship standings. Andrea Dovizioso had a great getaway from Ducati's first

front row start of the year and when he led the opening three laps of Sunday's MotoGP it looked like he was on for a strong race.

But after battling with Valentino Rossi, Dovizioso was forced to surrender the lead then fell away back to eighth place within a handful of laps, where he would ultimately finish. Teammate Cal Crutchlow had a difficult weekend, where he remained almost entirely outside of the top ten, in eleventh place. The result marked only his second finish for Ducati this season after accidents, injuries and technical problems.

Smedley pleased with Williams F1 team's progress so far

Williams head of vehicle performance Rob Smedley says he is pleased with the progress the team is making in terms of its issues with traction.

The start of the season saw Williams struggling with rear traction and as a result not being able to make the tyres last as long as some of its rivals. However, with Felipe Massa finishing seventh in Monaco and Valtteri Bottas having been on for an even better result on a rear-limited circuit, Smedley said he wanted the team to be encouraged by the improvements he has seen. “I said in my review to the guys at the end of

our meeting that if we're going to take a positive from the weekend … in Bahrain and in the first few races it was all about traction and we were suffering with traction,” Smedley said. “We've worked incredibly hard in lots of different areas to get around that.

Before Monaco we were a little bit underprepared – as I think everybody was, it's a bit unfair to say only us – for the front tyre warm-up issues that we faced. If I look back, could we have done a better job in qualifying with that whole thing? Absolutely, yes, we could have done. We'll go away and review that and we'll see what we need to do for the next races where we'll face similar issues.

Disabled motorsport marshal sets new mobility scooter record A disabled motorsport marshal who lost a leg in a terrible accident at the 2000 Goodwood Festival of Speed has set a new world record – on a mobility scooter with punctured tyres.

Steve Tarrant, who is determined to recover and return to marshalling at national and international levels, returned to a course that had been set at Goodwood for the gruelling record attempt in aid of a cancer charity. After 24 hours and stops only for battery changes on his TGA Breeze S4 GT mobility scooter, he smashed the previous record of 170.63 miles by almost 20, clocking up 190.2 miles. What’s more, to prove the effectiveness of TGA’s new self-sealing puncture defence system, the Breeze’s tyres were deliberately spiked on a bed of nails before the attempt. Steve completed the full distance without needing repairs.

Pending official Guinness World Records verification, which is believed to be a formality, Steve is now the world record holder for ‘The greatest distance covered in 24 hours by a mobility scooter’. Steve comments: “Firstly, I would to thank TGA Mobility and Sales Science for all their outstanding engineering support; Goodwood Motor Circuit and Lord March for hosting the event; and all my dedicated pit crew, I am also gratefully appreciative of all the donations that have been received for my designated charity during the challenge – Macmillan Cancer Support”.

City rivals give us a Champions League final to remember Gareth Bale became the first Welshman to score in a European Cup final as he scored the decisive goal in the Champions League final in Lisbon.

His all-star Real Madrid team were just seconds away from losing the final to Atletico their City rivals before Sergio Ramos popped up to score an injury time equaliser to force an extra 30 minutes. Then it was Bale's turn to score as he popped up to head Angel Di Maria's cross into the net to put Real in front. One of the inspired substitutions scored the third with Marcelo firing in a left-footed drive. In the match's final 10 minutes, Real completed a 4-1 rout before Bale celebrated on the pitch with a Welsh flag draped around him as his good friend Aaron Ramsey had done when he scored the winner for Arsenal in injury time of last week's FA Cup final.

But for long periods of an absorbing final, Bale missed chance after chance on a night when he clearly wasn’t at his best. Atletico were fiercely protecting the lead Diego Godin's first-half header had given them. Casillas had been at fault for Godín’s 36thminute goal and must have feared it would be the telling moment.

Sergio Ramos can’t hide his delight

“It was a lovely thing we had in our grasp,” Simeone said, ruefully.

The Atletico fans at one end of Estadio da Luz, to the left of Simeone, rose in spontaneous applause for the players who had given so much but who were now to a man lying on the grass in despair. The noise levels increased in a wonderful show of support.

Atletico's coach Simeone's sideline antics were the only dampener on this glorious evening of football. The Argentine lives on the edge, racing on to the pitch to confront referee Bjorn Kuipers at the break in extratime and appearing dangerously close to offering an old-fashioned "lamping" to Real's Raphael Varane for kicking the ball in his direction after a goal. I bet David Beckham had a sly smile on his face.

Simeone was applauded in and out of his press conference by Spanish journalists who admire his determination to fight Atletico's bigger and more powerful rivals – he just happens to take it too literally at times.

England Crushed by Sri Lanka England were skittled out for 99 as Sri Lanka levelled the five-match one-day international series at 1-1 with a 157-run win at Chester-le-Street. Tillakaratne Dilshan made 88 as Sri Lanka posted a respectable 256-8. England were reduced to 29-4 as seamer Nuwan Kulasekara (3-15) wreaked havoc while Sachithra Senanayake took 3-13.

Captain Eoin Morgan top-scored with 40 as England were all out in the 27th over, their heaviest ever home ODI defeat in terms of runs and fifth worst anywhere. "It was one of the worst performances I've been a part of for England. I can't explain why we played that badly." said Morgan.

Ali Carter: Snooker player diagnosed with lung cancer

Two-time World Snooker Championship runner-up Ali Carter has been diagnosed with a form of lung cancer.

World Snooker announced on Saturday that the 34-year-old from Chelmsford will undergo an intensive course of chemotherapy. The world number 13, who has Crohn's disease, last year recovered from testicular cancer to resume his career. He was beaten by eventual champion Mark Selby in the second round of this year's World Championship.

Jonny Wilkinson bows out victorious

Former England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson insists he has made the right decision to retire, despite helping Toulon retain the Heineken Cup. The World Cup winner, playing in Britain for the last time, kicked 13 points as the Top 14 side secured a 23-6 victory over Saracens in Cardiff.

"I don't feel I'm as effective, which is behind the decision," Wilkinson, who turned 35 on Sunday, told BBC Sport. "It's important not to stand in the way of guys who are the future." Wilkinson converted tries from Matt Giteau and Juan Smith, slotted home two penalties and also landed a right-footed drop-goal, bringing back memories of his heroics in the 2003 World Cup final against Australia.

Rory Roars to PGA Title Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy snatched a remarkable victory at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. McIlroy came from seven shots behind to claim the win as overnight leader Thomas Bjorn squandered a five-shot lead.

Just days after the heartache of calling off his wedding to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, McIlroy carded a closing 66 to win the European Tour's flagship event for the first time following a rollercoaster final day. McIlroy only took the outright lead for the first time with a birdie on the 71st hole and made another on the last to finish 14 under par, one ahead of Ireland's Shane Lowry with two-time winner Luke Donald and Bjorn a shot behind in third. Lowry had briefly been three clear when he started the back nine with a hat-trick of birdies, but drove into trouble on the 13th and ran up a double-bogey six.

Bjorn had begun the day five shots clear of playing partner Donald but both players ran up triple bogeys on the sixth to throw the tournament wide open, Bjorn taking two shots to get out of a fairway bunker and then finding more sand with his fourth shot. Donald responded with five birdies in his next 10 holes – chipping in on the 13th and 16th – but crucially

failed to birdie the 17th which meant he needed an eagle on the last to tie.

Bjorn also needed a three on the 18th after birdies on the 16th and 17th, but after Donald had found the water with his approach, the 43-year-old's third shot came up well short of the flag to confirm McIlroy's triumph.

Kylie Walker wins Deloitte Ladies Open

Colin Montgomerie gets his major title at last

"When I holed the putt it was a relief and then with the crowd erupting it almost gave me a fright with all the fans going crazy," she added. "It was just brilliant, it was such a good feeling."

He became eligible for the Seniors Tour when he turned 50 in June 2013.

Scotland's Kylie Walker claimed her first Ladies European Tour win after a play-off for the Deloitte Ladies Open in Amsterdam. The 27-year-old sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole at The International to secure victory. The Glaswegian had ended the three-round event level on six-under par with Nikki Campbell and Malene Jorgensen. Walker, clubhouse leader overnight, said: "I've never been in a play-off to win, so it's a whole new experience." With a previous best on the Tour of fourth in the 2011 Prague Masters, Walker was ecstatic to seal her first win since she turned professional in 2010.

Ryder Cup hero and eight-time European Tour order of merit winner Colin Montgomerie won the US Senior PGA Championship in Michigan on Sunday. Montgomerie, 50, finished 13 under par to beat eight-time major winner Tom Watson by four shots and twice Masters champion Bernhard Langer by six. The Scot, who was runner-up five times in majors on the regular tour, also secured his first win on US soil. "It's been a long time. It's a very special moment we've come close on a number of occasions and it's great to finally break that duck." he said. Montgomerie, who captained Europe to Ryder Cup victory in 2010, won 31 times on the European Tour.
