It went on: "The president expressed grave concern about Russian government support for the actions of armed, proRussian separatists who threaten to undermine and destabilise the

government of Ukraine."

"The president emphasised that all irregular forces in the country need to lay down their arms, and he urged President Putin to use his influence with these armed, pro-Russian groups to convince them to depart the buildings they have seized." The statement also threatened Russia with more sanctions, saying

"the costs Russia already has incurred will increase if those actions persist".

For his part, Mr Putin rejected accusations of Russian interference, calling the reports "unreliable". In a statement, the Kremlin said that recent unrest in Ukraine's south-east was "the result of the unwillingness and inability of the leadership in Kiev to take into account the interests of

Naughty people!

i was fairly amazed by the number of people who, when we didn’t come out last week made up a load of rubbish so, just to put the record straight, we haven’t gone down the tubes and no, nobody has died which was one of the nastier things put about! We have been known in the past to shut the office for a week for staff holidays but this time it was due to holidays and staff sickness - there’s a lot of it about, as they say! Some of our readers phoned the office and because the office phones were diverted to me they were able to find out what was going on. So, if you’re ever in any doubts, just call me and ask - it’s much better than making up stories! Because there was no paper last week, we took the time to analyse what we have been asking our advertisers and readers over the past few months about what they want and we will be upgrading, redesigning and generally having a great new look in the very near future - i was not sitting on my b*m all last week! The completely re-furbished new look is going to be better for all our advertisers and much nicer for all our readers so we’re all quite excited about it but, i’m not going to tell you what it’s all about - you’ll have to wait and see! One of my Cambridge 800 people has lost 4kg in two weeks - Well done you! The consulting sessions are going really well with those that have joined and i continue to lose weight myself. many people have commented on my weightloss and doesn’t it just feel great when someone says: “Ooh, you’re looking thinner!” To join in with my Cambridge 800 regime call me on 663 917 081. i will be holding group sessions or, if you’re more comfortable with it, one-to-one sessions at various times and in various places, so let’s all get a better look for summer.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Tuesday the situation in eastern Ukraine was "very dangerous", and praised the Ukrainian government for acting "very responsibly throughout this crisis".

Thousands of Russian troops are reported to be deployed along the border between Ukraine and Russia, and Kiev fears any crackdown on pro-Russian groups who have seized buildings in about 10 towns and cities across eastern provinces that form the heartland of Ukraine's heavy industry could trigger an invasion.

However, Ukraine's acting President, Olexander Turchynov, has announced the start of an "anti-terrorist operation", telling parliament it had begun in the "north of Donetsk Region" on Tuesday morning and was being conducted "stage by stage, in a responsible and weighed manner". Mr Turchynov said the aim of the operation was to "protect Ukrainian citizens, to stop the terror, to stop the crime, to stop the attempts to tear our country apart". A four-way meeting on the crisis, involving the EU, Russia, the US and Ukraine is due to be held in Geneva on Thursday. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned on Tuesday that any use of force by the Ukrainian government in the east could undermine the talks.

"You can't send tanks against your own citizens and at the same time hold talks," he said. EU foreign ministers have said they will expand a list of names targeted by sanctions.

Tension has been steadily rising since Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula, formerly part of Ukraine, last month. The move, condemned as illegal by Kiev and the West, followed the ousting of Ukraine's pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych in February. In other developments:

'Billy the Kid' fights extradition

Former police inspector antonio “Billy the Kid” González Pacheco appeared before the High Court last week, to continue fighting extradition to argentina. The 67-year-old, who faces 13 torture charges filed in argentina by a group of Spaniards, appeared in court wearing a motorcycle helmet to hide his face from the photographers. His lawyer said González Pacheco feared for his safety because he has been followed and threatened by people. The court only allowed the cameras to take photographs of him from behind. Former Guardia Civil officer Jesús muñecas is also wanted in argentina on murder charges. Buenos aires Judge maría Servini opened an investigation against the two men based on the universal justice doctrine. Victims of the Franco dictatorship filed a case in the South american country after courts in Spain refused to deal with their complaints. during the hearing, High Court prosecutors stated their opposition to sending the two men to argentina, arguing that the statute of limitations of the charges they face has run out. Billy the Kid got his name from his habit of spinning his pistol on his finger while interrogating his victims. madrid

Eight drug-trafficking suspects freed

a loophole in the government’s reforms of the universal justice law forced High Court Judge Javier Gómez Bermúdez to release eight suspected drug traffickers last week. He also shelved the entire case, which involved the investigation of a 12-ton haul of hashish that was seized on march 16th from a boat intercepted in international waters. The eight crew members of the vessel were from Syria, and were arrested by Spanish customs officers. Earlier in the week, High Court judge Fernando andreu had to let another eight suspected drug traffickers free. They were the Egyptian crew of a fishing vessel caught in march carrying nearly 10 tons of hashish. The government has been harshly criticised by human rights groups, the opposition and legal experts for restricting the use of the universal justice doctrine after officials were pressured by other countries with relation to ongoing High Court investigations. The loophole in the new law limits judges’ ability to investigate and send to trial boat crews caught carrying drugs.

King says 'recession is over' King Juan Carlos told a group of political and business leaders in the United Arab Emirates on Monday that Spain is 'no longer being dragged down by the recession'. Heading a group of Spanish businessmen, the king thanked Arab leaders for not losing faith in Spain’s economy.

“Our country has suffered from a crisis caused by painful job losses. But today we have emerged from the recession, foreign capital is returning to Spain with strength, and the Spanish economy is again growing and creating jobs,” the

'EU would accept independent Catalonia' Despite repeated warnings to the contrary from EU officials, advisers to the Catalan regional government said on Monday that the "European Union would sooner or later admit an independent Catalonia as a member state for political and economic reasons".

The National Transition Advisory Council said there is a loophole in current European and international legislation that would help Catalonia join the EU. It said that existing legislation does not cover the segregation of part of a state and argued that people who invoke Article 49 of the Treaty of the Union, which

lays out the mechanism for membership, have “no legal basis” for their claims.

In January of this year, European Commission leader José Manuel Durao Barroso put it in writing that if Catalonia were to secede, it would automatically be excluded from the EU and would have to reapply for membership. The Catalan

regional government has set November 9th as the date for a referendum on self-rule, which the Madrid government has said would be unconstitutional.

The Catalan government's recent petition to Parliament in Madrid to transfer the necessary rights to hold the poll legally was voted down by a huge majority.

Almost 100 people have been arrested in the last three years for running human trafficking rings that force people to beg on the streets. Most of the traffickers and their victims are Romanian nationals. José Nieto, chief inspector of the Central Unit Against Immigration Rings (UCRIF) told a press conference: “They convince entire families that they will have wellpaid jobs in Spain, working in the fields, and charge each one of them €300 to €500 for the paperwork. “Each beggar has to make between €80 and €100. If they don’t, their controllers are willing to accept payment in kind (mobile phones, handbags, wallets, sunglasses and laptops) that they often steal from bars and street cafés. The earnings always end up in Romania.”

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Fifteen people died and nine more were injured in 12 road accidents during the first weekend of the Easter break - more than half the total number of deaths seen during all of Easter week last year, the DGT national traffic authority reported on Monday.

Last year was the first since 1962 with fewer than 30 deadly car crashes

Roads at worst since 1985

The president of the Spanish Road Association (AEC), Juan Francisco Lazcano, told reporters last Friday that “Spanish roads are facing unprecedented deterioration, and only a sudden change of tack in the 2015 budget can

prevent a debacle”. He was presenting his association's latest report, Study on investment in road maintenance, which says the situation of the country’s roads are “the worst” since 1985, when the association conducted its first study. By extrapolating the conditions found on the 3,000 road sections that were analyzed, the AEC

concluded that it is necessary to replace 330,000 road signs, repaint road surface markings along 52,000 kilometres of thoroughfares and review 82 per cent of roadway lights. The association warned about the serious consequences of pavement deterioration for road safety, and said the cost of

repairs grows exponentially with every passing year. “Every euro that is not invested in time

on pavement maintenance becomes €5 three years later, and €25 by the fifth year,” Lazcano warned.

71 killed in Nigeria bus

The authorities have confirmed that 71 people were killed and 124 injured in a bomb blast at a crowded bus station on the outskirts of Nigeria's capital, Abuja.

Police spokesman Frank Mba said 16 luxury coaches and 24 minibuses had been destroyed. The explosion happened as commuters were about to board buses and taxis to go to work in central Abuja on Monday.

Investigators believe the explosives may have been inside a vehicle. The blast ripped a hole 4ft deep in the ground of Nyanya Motor Park, some 10 miles from the city centre, and destroyed more than 30 vehicles, causing

secondary explosions as their fuel tanks ignited.

In a statement, the police said they were on "red alert" and had increased surveillance at "all vulnerable targets within Abuja". No group has taken responsibility for the attack, but Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan blamed the radical Islamist group Boko Haram. Visiting the scene, he vowed that the country would overcome the insurgency.

This year, Boko Haram's fighters have killed more than 1,500 civilians in three states in north-east Nigeria. Boko Haram has hit Abuja several times before, including an attack on the United Nations building in 2011. The Nigerian

government had said the violence was now contained in a small area of the north-east. But the latest bomb in Abuja could be worrying evidence that the Islamist militants are determined to expand their area of operation.

Record seizure of illegal weapons

Police have seized tens of thousands of illegal guns and knives, in what the china Daily newspaper said is the largest-ever haul of its kind. More than 10,000 guns and 120,000 knives were confiscated after a four-month investigation, and 15 people suspected of belonging to a criminal network were arrested. The police started investigating after a suspect in an armed robbery in Guiyang city in Guizhou province told them about his supplier. The gang's distribution network for the weapons included at least 27 provinces, the newspaper said.

Private gun ownership is illegal in china and certain knives are classified as "controlled". Du chuang, a public security official from Guiyang, told the newspaper that the illegal arms ring was a family-run business. The suspects even "gave out their business cards all over china", he said.

Mass DNA tests at school over rape

The police are taking Dna samples from more than 500 male students and staff at a school in La rochelle where a girl was raped last September. The 16-year-old was assaulted in dark toilets at Fenelon-notre Dame, a private roman catholic school in the atlantic port city. Investigators hope to find a match for Dna traces found on her clothing. Saliva samples are being taken from 475 students, 31 teachers and 21 other adult males who were on the premises at the time. While the testing, by plain-clothes police, is voluntary, any male refusing to take part could come under suspicion. Two classrooms are being used for the collection of Dna, which was due to end on Wednesday. The school has nearly 1,300 pupils in total. all the Dna samples testing negative will be destroyed, aFP reported, quoting local prosecutor Isabelle Pagenelle. The agency said it is the first mass testing ever done at a French school.

Military admit 'excesses' during protests

The military has admitted it committed "some excesses" during weeks of political unrest that have left more than 40 people dead. Strategic command chief vladimir Padrino said 97 officers and police staff were being investigated for "cruelty and torture". "That represents only 0.4% of the force," he told venevision television. Security forces have been accused of human rights abuse during the almost daily anti-government protests, which have left at least 41 people killed and hundreds more injured on both sides. The venezuelan opposition and human rights activists accuse the security forces of repression and using heavy-handed tactics. But Gen Padrino insisted the security forces were acting "in accordance with the rule of law". "no soldiers have received orders to hurt anyone, harass or end the life of a venezuelan," he said. Last week, President nicolas Maduro met opposition leaders in crisis talks aimed at quelling more than two months of protests. The demonstrations began over high levels of crime, rising inflation and shortages of basic foods, but have since grown into a wide opposition movement.

Bodies of seven babies found

a Utah woman has been accused of killing six of her own babies after their bodies were discovered in cardboard boxes at her former house. Megan Huntsman, 39, gave birth to the babies between 1996 and 2006. Seven bodies were found by police at the house and it is unclear why she has only been charged on six counts. Her estranged husband, Darren West, discovered the first body in the garage before alerting authorities. Police spokesman Michael roberts said: "We don't believe he had any knowledge of the situation." When asked how the husband could not have known his wife had given birth to seven children, he replied: "That's the million-dollar question. amazing." Mrs Huntsman had moved out of the house around three years ago. She had three daughters, a teenager and two adults, who had continued to live there. They did not seem to know their mother was pregnant or notice anything suspicious, neighbours said.

Robotic sub's first mission cut short the

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

A robotic submarine deployed to search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane in the southern Indian Ocean had its first mission cut short on Tuesday. On Monday, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, who heads the agency coordinating the search, said it was time to deploy the Bluefin-21 to begin its search of the sea floor. It set off on its first mission on Monday night.

"After completing around six hours of its mission, Bluefin-21 exceeded its operating depth limit of 15,000ft and its built-in safety feature returned it to the surface," the Joint Agency Co-ordination Centre said. "The six hours of data gathered by the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle is currently being extracted and analysed." Flight MH370 went missing on March 8th with 239 people on board, while flying from Kuala Lumpur

to Beijing.

It lost contact with air traffic controllers over the South China Sea and Malaysian officials believe, based on satellite data, that it ended its flight thousands of kilometres off course, in seas west of the Australian city of Perth. An Australian navy vessel last week detected four acoustic signals using a US Navy towed pinger locator, which officials believe could come from the missing plane's flight

recorders. No signals have been detected since April 8th, however, leading to fears that the recorders' batteries - which last about a month - have run out. Bluefin-21 is an almost 5m-long vehicle that can create a sonar map of the sea floor.

On Monday officials said each mission was expected to last 24 hours, with 16 hours spent on the ocean floor, four hours' diving and resurfacing time, and four hours to download data.

Fire-hit Chilean city to be rebuilt

President Michelle Bachelet of Chile promised on Monday that her government will rebuild the areas destroyed by a deadly fire in the port city of Valparaiso.

The blaze has killed at least 15 people, destroyed some 2,000 homes, leaving thousands more homeless and forcing mass evacuations. Chilean forestry officials have said

it could take more than 20 days to fully extinguish the remaining fires. Chile's forestry agency, Conaf, said firefighters were still battling residual wildfires, but it stressed that the situation was not "out of control". The forest fire started on Saturday in the hills surrounding Valparaiso, 70 miles west of the capital Santiago.

On Sunday, Ms Bachelet declared the areas destroyed by the fire a disaster zone. About 1,300 firefighters are battling the flames, using helicopters and planes to dump water on remaining hotspots. Residents and volunteers are working to clear the debris left behind.

Post and Guardian share Pulitzer Prize

The Washington Post and the Guardian have shared the Pulitzer Prize for public service journalism for a series of stories on US electronic spying.

Their reporting was based on documents leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. The Pulitzer

In giving the top prize to The Guardian US and the Washington Post, the Pulitzer committee said the Guardian helped "through aggressive reporting to spark a debate about the relationship between the

In a statement published by The Guardian, Snowden called the award "a vindication for everyone who believes that the public has a role in government.

Britain reveals plans for three new garden cities The British Government has announced plans for three new garden cities to tackle a chronic housing shortage. The Chancellor has said one would be created and now Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced that there will be three. It is a radical solution to an old problem and a prospectus will invite councils to bid for the funds available.

Each city will have at least 15,000 homes, but the new cities will not be imposed on communities and must have the full support and backing of councils, have transport links and be commercially viable.

The money will come from an existing £2.4 billion pot for the developments through to 2020. The announcement follows concern that the average first time house buyer is now aged over 30. Mr Clegg said the Government was keen to get to grips with the problem because successive governments had allowed an urban sprawl which bred local resentment and did not solve the problem.

Concentration in three cities would allow better provision of infrastructure and would protect the countryside at the same time.

Royals a hit in New Zealand

We have never seen so many pictures of one baby in the newspapers in Britain and it coincides with the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to New Zealand, which appears to have been a big success.

The sporting royals have certainly entered into the spirit of the welcome, and on a serious note, while in Christchurch, paid their respects to victims of the earthquake which devastated the city in February 2011.

Patients from poorer areas were less likely to be admitted to hospital, less likely to be given a key test once in hospital and less likely to be given essential drugs.

In highlighting the inequalities in care the researchers are calling on policy makers to provide better care where necessary to improve the prognosis of stroke.

Kenyan breaks marathon record

Kenyan world record holder Wilson Kipsang won the men’s race in the Virgin Money London Marathon in a course record time of 2hrs 4mins and 29secs. The women’s title went to Edna Kiplagat of Ethiopia.

Sadly a 42-year-old man collapsed and died at the finish line. An estimated 36,000 people took part in the race, most to raise money for charity, and 1,200 volunteers from the St John Ambulance lined the streets.

Female athlete, Mami Konneh Lahun, 24, was due to fly home to Sierra Leone on Monday but failed to return to her accommodation in Greenwich where she had been staying since April 7th, following Sunday’s London Marathon. She finished 20th in the race

and is said to be Sierra Leone’s fastest ever female 5,000 and 10,000 metres runner and she won the Sierra Leone and Liberia marathons last year. According to police sources the runner has no known links to the UK and does not have a mobile phone.

An Irish farmer has said he experienced a "shock to the system" after a rare, male, goat-sheep, or "geep", was born on his farm.Pat Murphy, said the animal, which has not been given a name, was born to a ewe last week and his mum is fine with her unusual offspring.

A driver “miraculously” escaped death in the early hours of Sunday morning after losing control of his car and plunging 80ft off the cliff on the A259 near Roedean, Brighton. 22 emergency workers attended the scene only to

find the driver had escaped the vehicle and was on rocks nearby. The car had missed the promenade and made a relatively soft landing in the sea below. However, lifeboat and coastguard crews searched the sea

and beach nearby in case anyone else was in the water. Emergency crews used ropes and ladders to rescue the man who was strapped to a stretcher and handed over to paramedic crews.

Interest rates to stay low in the UK UK interest rates are set to stay at low rates until the end of 2015, according to audit firm EY’s The Item Club with expectations of maintaining the Bank of England rate at 0.5% until at least Autumn next year. However, they expect the rate to rise next winter following “decent but unspectacular growth” and

house prices are expected to rise by 7.4% this year and 7.2% next. New mortgage-lending rules, due to be brought in later this month to prevent homeowners overextending themselves, are expected to help ease price rises to 4.2% in 2016. Peter Spencer, the Item Club's chief economic

adviser, said: "The FCA will assume crucial importance to ensure (loan) multiples do not become too stretched and that affordability is scrupulously checked. If these controls are rigorously applied this will eventually constrain London prices … and head off problems when interest rates rise."

If you have any money stashed in offshore accounts, beware! Chancellor George Osborne has said that those sifting their wealth away to avoid paying tax could be jailed, even if that was not their intention, adding that there would be “no safe haven for people who do not declare their foreign income. However,

Bill Dowdell, head of tax at Deloitte, told The Times: "It's horrifying. People should not be put in prison unless you can prove intent. I'm shocked to find that an offence which could lead to a prison sentence could be decided on a strict-liability basis." The announcement comes after concerns that

some wealthy people are costing the government millions of pounds a year by keeping money away from the glare of UK authorities. Previously, in order to earn a conviction with a jail sentence, prosecutors had to show that individuals intended to avoid paying tax on foreign income.

Look out, the Chancellor’s about!

Year ends with surplus

For the first time in several years, the Town Hall had a surplus of €9.5 million at the end of last year which councillor mario Bravo said "reflected its efforts to deal with its debts". He said €3 million would go towards paying the council's suppliers while the rest would be invested in urban infrastructure and subsidies to a variety of local nGOs.

“To be or not to be” a tax resident in Spain, “That is the question” According to the Spanish Law each individual living in Spain for more than 183 days a year is a tax resident in Spain, and should pay taxes in Spain for their worldwide income.

Many foreigners living in Spain permanently, (for more than 183 days a year), do not pay any taxes in Spain, or submit annual income tax returns. Some do not submit them out of ignorance of the law, and others because they are afraid of paying high taxes, etc., Whatever the reason, it is important to be aware that ignorance of the law is no excuse, A Tax declaration must be submitted annually, and taxes should be paid when applicable by all tax residents in Spain.

Up until now, the Spanish Inland Revenue has not been controlling the situation of those foreigners living

permanently in Spain, despite the fact that authorities have always been aware of this important group of people. Now, the situation has changed, due to the financial crisis, the Spanish Government intends to tighten up its control of all foreigners living in Spain to ensure that they pay taxes where due. This way they would avoid thousands of people receiving free health services without paying taxes, and consequently, not having the legal right to get them. The Spanish Government has decided to be stricter with the legal requirements that allow people to get Spanish Health Cards. Unlike in the past, now it will not be enough to just register with the local Town Hall, (called “Empadronamiento”) in order to get treatment.

Therefore, NOW is the time to formally become a tax resident in Spain by

Advertorial

submitting your annual income tax return for the tax year 2013, This should be done during the months of May and June 2014.

This could be advantageous as it would allow foreign residents to:-

-Confirm to the Spanish tax authorities without doubt, that they, the tax resident, is living in Spain, and paying taxes when applicable. -Have the legal right to receive a health card which allows access to the Spanish Public health system.

-Avoid the 3 % withholding tax when a real estate property is sold. This tax is applicable to foreigners who sell a property and cannot prove that they are a tax resident in Spain. -Benefit inheritance

from

the tax

advantages, and the allowances applicable to tax residents in Spain (i.e. no inheritance taxes between spouses on the main home).

-Be considered a tax resident in Spain, thus avoiding the annual income tax applicable to non-resident foreigners who are owners of a real estate property in Spain (tax form 210).

It is important to mention that most foreigners living in Spain are pensioners with low monthly pensions, so they should be aware that they probably will not have to pay any income tax in Spain as the result of their tax return would most likely be zero. However, it is still recommendable to submit an annual tax return, (even if the result is zero and no tax has to be paid), to enable them to be able to take advantage of the above points.

CONCLUSION: If you are foreigner living permanently in Spain (for more than 183 days between 1st January 2013 and 31st December 2013) I would strongly recommend that you submit an annual income tax return during the months of May and June 2014, for the tax year 2013. By doing so, confirming to the Spanish Tax Authorities that you are, without doubt, a tax resident in Spain, you will avoid any potential problems, or fines, and will have all the legal rights that the Spanish Laws recognizes are due to all individuals residing

legally in Spain and duly making their Tax declaration here.

Junta coalition damaged by re-housing crisis the

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

The re-housing of 17 squatter families who had been evicted early last week from a building called La Utopía in Seville sparked a 48-hour-long crisis in the Junta de Andalucia's coalition government.

Socialist Premier Susana Diaz decided the families could not be allowed to jump the queue of around 12,000 families who are on the waiting list for subsidised housing and took the housing portfolio away from coalition partner, the Communistdominated United Left

(UI, Izquierda Unida). The UI threatened to leave the coalition, which would have forced Diaz to call early elections two years ahead of time. IU national coordinator Cayo Lara flew in from Madrid to support his party during tense talks between the two partners, which ended with Diaz backing down and handing the housing portfolio back to the IU. By that time, only eight families had been rehoused and the IU agreed that the other nine

families should join the waiting list.

Both parties claimed their alliance had not been damaged but one Socialist highlighted the mistrust inherent in the coalition when he said: “It’s not a question of eight families, but rather the concept, the values. Andalusia is not Venezuela, and we can’t let anyone who bangs on the door just walk away with a new house.”

He was referring to a recent statement by IU leader Diego Valderas, who is deputy premier,

Nursing Care Solutions

FULLY LICENCED AND ACCREDITED WITH THE JUNTA DE ANDALUCIA

that it would wonderful if Venezuela's brand of 21st century socialism could be implanted in Andalusia.

Other areas of disagreement include the radical anti-eviction law approved last September but paralysed by the Constitutional Court, and the plan to pay the light and water bills of the region's poorest families. The Land Bank is another IU project by which land standing idle would be given to the unemployed. The IU is also trying to push a new

Susana Diaz

tax law through the regional parliament which would introduce a huge tax hike for the region's richest families.

A risky business

I

had planned to analyse the regional government's latest crisis - with the Socialists and their coalition partner the United Left taking pot shots at each other but I decided it was too weighty a topic for Easter Week. And this is where the risk comes in. By next week, regional premier Susana Diaz might have brought forward the elections - as I was going to predict she would - but that's a risk I'll have to take. It's Easter week after all, and one can assume that all the pols will be at the beach or wherever by the time you read this, and my prediction will still be valid by this time next week.

T

hen I remember Adolfo Suarez and how he pulled a fast one over on the military during Easter weekend in 1977. After legalising the trade unions and political parties which Franco had banned, he'd promised the military he wouldn't legalise the only banned party left - the Communist Party. But he knew the transition from dictatorship to democracy wouldn't be complete if he left the Communists out in the cold so he waited till all the generals and other top brass had gone to the beach before decreeing the party's legalisation on Easter Saturday.

H

e had to be sneaky about it because most of the top military men at that time had actually fought in the Civil War alongside Franco, who hated the Commies with a passion. And when you look at what they did in Russia, Eastern Europe and China, you can't really blame them.

T

he front page of a weekly paper is another high risk area and I dread having to decide what to put on it because I know that by Wednesday morning it will make me look a fool. This week, it's the Ukraine again, where there's a strong possibility of World War Three breaking out. Russian and Ukraine troops are on the move even as I write - but will probably only go as far as trying to outstare each other across the border (I hope). This week I felt like starting each sentence with "at press time" - those three little words that would let me off the hook if that crazy Putin decides to take on the whole world overnight.

I

remember years ago when I was working at the Town Crier I ran a story about a bomb attack in

Iraq which killed enough people to make it newsworthy. By the time the paper was on the street there'd been a few more bomb attacks and the number of casualties was hideous, making my earlier version look ridiculous. I decided there and then to ban all bombings anywhere in the non-Western world from the paper. I'm not being discriminating because the sad truth is it's impossible to keep up with the slaughter going on even as I write in Africa and Syria particularly as well as too many other parts of the world.

A

fter typing that last sentence I realised journalists face another type of risk - betrayal by their computers. I thought I had typed "slaughter" but when I re-read it, it turned out to be "daughter". Now this could be a simple typo - I'd typed "d" instead of "s", which are next to each other on the keyboard, coming up with "dlaughter" and the computer decided I meant daughter. This happened the other week in the Mijas story, when it looked as if French troops were invading Malaga in February 1937.

I

'm sure the author of the article wrote "Franco's" but her computer decided she'd really meant French. I can't remember which programme I was using but some years back I had to read over articles and translations very carefully because the programme kept changing words in such a way that they couldn't be simple typos. Computers have minds of their own and that's a risk we must always bear in mind.

T

o end on a more cheerful note, it looks as if all the religious processions here in the south of Spain are not going to be rained off this year. For some years now I've ended up weeping after watching on TV the genuine grief of people in Sevilla or Malaga who the rain robbed of the joy of parading their thrones through the streets.

J

ust a reminder - the processions in Malaga are considered to be on a par with those in Sevilla, or even better, which is something we can be collectively proud of, whether we're religious or not.

Cold facts on murder Writes for the English language version of

L

ast week, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) released its global study on homicides committed in different countries. And not so surprisingly, there are no statistical surprises. The Americas – United States and Canada included – continue to take the dubious prize of the region where most of the world’s murders take place. The European continent is ranked below Africa and Asia and only above Oceania when it comes to the number of violent deaths per inhabitant. The 166-page report, filled with colourful, easy-to-follow graphics, makes an interesting read and does contain some astonishing conclusions, some of which knock over many of our own personal theories about why so many violent deaths occur in one place rather than another.

T

here were close to half a million murders that took place across the globe in 2012, most of them intentional homicides. The researchers found complex overlapping patterns of circumstances, motivations and relationships that drive people to kill. They split these deaths into three categories: homicides related to criminal activities, interpersonal relationships, and social conflicts. Of the 437,000 murders that took place in 2012, 36 per cent were committed in the Americas. Europe only accounted for five per cent of that total figure, which is not a startling find. Since the 1950s, the Americas’ murder rate has always been five to eight times greater than that of Europe.

H

owever, researchers found that in some countries in the Western Hemisphere, such as Uruguay and Costa Rica, and in Europe – Sweden and Finland – murders based on interpersonal reasons are significantly higher than killings committed related to criminal activities. And the long-time general acceptance that easy access to firearms in some countries primarily accounts for high murder rates in those nations is also debunked in the study.

Not all high homicide areas are associated with a high prevalence of firearm homicide. For example, some sub-regions with relatively high homicide rates, such as Eastern Europe and Southern Africa, have a relatively low share of homicides by firearm, while others, such as Southern Europe and Northern Africa, have lower homicide rates but

B

higher shares of homicides committed by firearm,” the study shows.

ut firearms play a big role in gender violence crimes regardless of the country the murders take place. “Studies conducted in high-income countries, which tend to have lower levels of homicide, have shown strong correlations between gun availability in the home and female homicide rates, but a slightly weaker correlation with male homicide rates. As a result, having a gun in the home places women at a higher risk of victimization, particularly in the home, where they are more likely to be killed by their intimate partners or family members.”

W

hile UN researchers found that the growing use of crack cocaine in the United States has become a predominant factor in many murder incidents, this isn’t the case in countries like Spain and Britain where there is also a high use of the drug but similar levels of violence have not been reported. Yet they found that in Britain, Sweden and Finland it was alcohol that was usually the driving force that pushed people to commit murder.

T

he report also colour shades regions across Europe where the murder rates are the highest. In Spain, Asturias gets the darker blue out of all of Spain’s areas where the homicide rates was the highest in 2012 (between 2.5 and seven per 100,000 inhabitants) while the rest of the nation reported less than one per 100,000 murders that year. Algarve, the southernmost part of Portugal, also reported a homicide rate of 2.5 per 100,000.

W

ith some nations and jurisdictions beginning to flirt with the idea of legalizing certain narcotics, it will be some years before the United Nations or any other international law enforcement agency can determine whether this move will help reduce the number of violent deaths in certain areas. But any type of policy that aims to curb violence and redirect money to social programmes that has been squandered on ineffective antidrug actions will always be a welcome move.

Understanding Lux Mundi enjoy trip out Passports The Costa del Sol Action Group explains “Financial Passports”:

Many if not most financial advisers are not authorised directly in Spain but some are authorised in their host country and allowed under European law to offer advice in other European nations such as Spain. This is known as “passporting” financial advice. For example a UK financial adviser, provided they have applied to the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA) and been approved by the FSA can passport advice into Spain. What this means is that is it the UK Regulator that is responsible for policing the activities of your financial adviser and handling any grievance you may have. Types of Passport

There are two types of Passport Authorisation:

1. The Insurance Mediation Directive (IMD) Passport (registered with DGS in Spain) Many financial advisers ‘passport’ advice into Spain under the Insurance Mediation Directive (IMD).

This means the FSA

will passport the UK adviser and notify the Spanish Insurance and Pensions Regulator the La Dirección General de Seguros y Fondos de Pensiones (DGS) that your adviser is working Spain. The firm will be listed both on the FSA and the DGS website as doing this. a. IMD: Advice and Activities

Permitted Arranging

Insurance based products such as: Insurance Policies, Life Insurance Investments such as Insurance Investment Bonds, Life Insurance, Pensions and Annuities b. IMD: Offices and Advisers Living In Spain

If your adviser is ‘passport’ authorised under IMD they will generally not be living in Spain or have an office or branch but some may do so or try to give the impression that they do. Having an office or branch means your adviser really should be passporting into Spain under MIFID.

Next week the Costa del Sol Action Group will be telling you about the second type of passport. written by David Klein of the Costa del Sol Action Group

Recently Lux Mundi and representatives of various Christian Churches were invited by Don Jesús Catalá Ibáñez, the Bishop of Málaga, to meet him at the Malaga Seminary Building to eat together and strengthen the bonds of friendship that unite them in this Diocese. The meeting aimed to be the first step for other future opportunities for dialogue and encounters between Christians of different confessions and thus deepen the faith they share.

The meeting began with a prayer in the Chapel of the “Good Shepherd” Seminary, designed in 1920, in which Don Jesus gave them a message based on Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd. “He called them to exercise the ministry of pastors and care for his flock, being servants and collaborators of the One Good Shepherd." One of the most popular devices used to restrain dogs when taking them out for a walk is the retractable leash otherwise known as the Flexi. Many owners, however, wonder if such a leash is appropriate or even safe to use. Well, the answer is ,No. Before using a retractable leash, make certain you’ve got one that’s strong enough to handle your dog. Dogs that have a tendency to bolt or take off running after perceived prey should never be restrained with a retractable leash. Aside from those dangers, there are other things to keep in mind when using one of these popular leashes.

Celia Says FERAL CATS

· Prickling leash burns. Retractable leashes, especially the thin string variety, can very easily cause leash burns. This could happen when you let your pooch race past you with the retractable line zipped up across your bare skin. Unwarranted injuries, however, can be prevented if you try the flat, tape style retractable leash. Entanglement or strangulation. Not only can retractable leashes burn us, they can also get twisted around a dog’s neck or legs. Worse, if your pooch panics and jerks the moment they get hog-tied; it could cause the leash to pull even tighter. Although you can loosen the cords that have wrapped around his neck, the situation could quickly become life-threatening. Fatal accidents. There are times when our dogs dart away all of a sudden, and with a retractable leash on him, your dog might dart even farther, faster. Nevertheless, it’s the reeling that’s a serious issue here. It is possible that Fido may spot a squirrel or anything interesting across the street, and suddenly take off after it. If you’re not alert enough, his abrupt behaviour and an un-sturdy retractable leash could put him smack on the road, right in front of a speeding car.

Dogs need grooming. Most people groom their dogs at home, but it is a very good idea to sometimes do these things during your walk. When we walk our dogs it is all about exercise and we want our dogs to have fun. It is however important to be close to your dog even during a walk, grooming is a great way to make your dog relax and stay close to you for a while during the walk. Stop and cuddle your dog a little when you are out, stop and do some training and stop and do some grooming. This way you are taking the walk together and you become an important part of the walk for your dog.

Other Things You Would Never Want to Happen

The leash drops. Because these leashes rarely have a wrist strap and are sometimes heavy and bulky, dropping them is a regular occurrence. What’s worse, if you drop the handle, the lack of tension can send the heavy handle hurdling toward your dog. Not only could the heavy leash handle smack your dog in the head, if your dog is spooked by the leash handle zipping deafeningly toward him, he may take off running. · The cord is grabbed. If you grab the cord/tape while it is being pulled from the handle, you might suffer from immediate injury like cuts and burns. · The cord wraps around you. Poor handling can also cause the cord/tape to twist around you or someone else’s fingers resulting in deep wounds, or worse, amputation. · The collar breaks or comes off your dog. The moment this occurs, the leash could retract at top speed while the other end of the line whips around at the same full momentum leading to serious injuries to face, teeth, and eyes. This leash is not normally recommended by professional trainers.

Many of us are tempted to feed the cats that hang about towns and resorts. It seems so hard not to help them survive. Some of us may have groups of cats or individuals that we feed regularly. If you are a cat feeder, the kindest thing of all is to try and get your cat or cats neutered. You can also set up a cat café, ie a place where feral cats can regularly eat and drink. For an example of what can be done for stray cats, read the story of the Twinkle Trust (www.twinkletrust.org ) which has been running this kind of scheme in Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. Anna Says Grooming your dog

Nazlie says: Heatstroke in Dogs

Heatstroke in Dogs - Dogs can suffer from heatstroke. Heatstroke can be a very serious, life threatening condition for any dog and if it is suspected immediate action is required. No dog, animal or person should ever be locked into an unventilated car. Even if the car is parked in the shade, the sun may move to an unshaded position over a period of time, leading to very high temperatures inside the vehicle. If a dog is locked in a vehicle, even in spring or autumn, there is a serious chance that it may die of heat exhaustion. This is because dogs are unable to cope with very high temperatures even for short periods of time. Recognising the symptoms of heat exhaustion in your dog are important, your dog may start to stagger and drool; stretch out and pant. If you suspect heat exhaustion immediate action must be taken to save the dog’s life. In mild cases of heatstroke, moving the dog to a cool ventilated area may be sufficient. In more severe cases however, the dog can be cooled using a water spray (e.g., a plant mister or in severe cases a hose pipe with a misting spray). Never soak the dog too quickly as this is likely to lower the dogs body temperature too quickly which can result in its death. An alternative method of cooling is to cover the dog with wet towels until it shows signs of recovery. It is important for you to take your dog to see a vet for a health check-up after it has recovered from heatstroke. Please remember that heatstroke can be fatal to dogs and that you should never leave your dog alone in a parked car. The consequences can be disastrous.

Part ree

This week we have the last in the series of articles telling you all about a fabulous cultural day out that can be had in Mijas Pueblo.

Carromato de Max (Max´s Covered Wagon) was inaugurated in 1972 by Professor Max born in Brihuega, Guadalajara.

His real name was Juan Elegido Millán – a hypnotist by profession but took on the artistic name of Professor Max. He was a self-taught magician and apparently very well known and also had studied medicine. A true Bohemian and passionate adventurer he travelled all over Europe and Africa developing his passion for artists of the ancient world and amassed a great collection of miniatures, some say as many as 30,000. Not being able to house them all in one place, he inaugurated his “museum” in Mijas with 360 pieces – of course at the time it was considered to house “freaks”! He spent most of his time in Africa and he would recall anecdotes of what he had to do to obtain certain miniatures. On one occasion it was impossible to gain access to the

Jovaros Indians but hearing of the walking path that the Chief of the tribe was to take and knowing him to be a Sorcerer, he arranged a hypnotic session with members of the tribe - the Chief was so taken aback by it all that he offered him anything he wanted in exchange for the secrets of his session. It was here when he obtained the shrunken head of a white man –the most valuable in the Museum.

Sadly he died in a car accident in 1975 and the “Carromato” passed to his inheritors who came to an arrangement with the Mijas Town Hall – they in turn gave the management of the installations to AFESOL a non-profit organisation helping those with mental illness. Therefore the entrance fee of €3 is destined to financing projects and activities of the association. Apart from the shrunken head (which is really not freakish) you will see the Titanic, the Taj Mahal, each painted on a grain of rice and the Seven Wonders of the World painted on a toothpick! There are also dressed desiccated fleas, writing on a strand of hair, a bullfight scene painted on the head

of a needle and some exquisite miniature paintings on miniature easels and of course Lady Di painted on a pinhead, which is really stunning. We learnt from the charming reception lady that to paint the miniatures a brush with an eyelash hair is used!!

You are probably asking the question, how can you see them if they are so small? Well each display is housed under a glass halfdome bubble with small magnifying glasses permitting you to see them very clearly It is one of Mijas´s most popular attractions and is really worth the visit and at the same time you are donating to a very good cause.

As you can imagine by the end of the day we were truly Cultured Out but all agreed it had all been well worth it.

When I started this article it was only meant to be a short piece but I have been so carried away in investigating each topic that I just couldn’t stop. I sincerely hope you have enjoyed reading our cultural day in Mijas.

The AmAzing SpidermAn 2 Directed by Marc Webb Starring: Andrew Garfield, Dane DeHaan, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx

Sony Studio has stepped up to the plate with its Spring blockbuster superhero offering to remind Marvel they aren’t the only kids on the block. Sony’s latest Spidey movie premiered last week and will set worldwide box office tills ringing.

This second in the Spiderman reboot confirms that Brit actor Garfield has more than comfortably filled the Peter Parker/Spiderman shoes once worn by Tobey Maguire. As ever, the heart of the Spiderman story revolves around the internal conflict Peter faces – his ‘normal’ teenage awkwardness, hopes and anxieties, pitched against the extraordinary responsibilities of a superhero.

Here he is developing his relationship with Gwen (Emma Stone, rumoured to be Garfield’s real-life girlfriend), and all is not going well. But of

After losing his job as a government advisor, Martin, a tired and weary journalist, begins searching for new work. Meanwhile Philomena tells her daughter a story about the son that she was forced to give up for adoption 50 years previously at a convent.

While at a party, the daughter relates the story to Martin who, although he hates human

interest pieces, accepts the job of helping to find the woman's son. As he researches what happened to Philomena's son, he tracks across Scotland, Ireland and the United States. All the while, Philomena keeps a bright attitude that helps to restore Martin's faith in humanity. Although, they had many set backs, and later found Philomena's son buried in

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

DVD NEW RELEASE course one of the responsibilities of being a superhero is protecting your fellow New Yorkers from the bad guys and that can be a distraction from everyday activities. His friend Harry Osborn (DeHaan) is about to inherit the poisonous legacy of Oscorp, the multi-million dollar company linked to Spidey’s protaganists, from his father and is well on the way to becoming the Green Goblin.

In the meantime mild mannered Oscorp employee Max Dillon (Foxx) is accidentally turned by one of the company’s secret

research programmes into super villain Electro and the stage is set for some amazing battles and big set piece special effects extravaganzas.

Both Harry and Max are layered characters. They are not simply cypher bad guys but have been badly damaged by their lives so there is an emotional complexity underpinning the blockbuster special effects. The script delivers some great humour too. The movie has found favour with most of the critics so a definite must-see for Spidey and super-hero fans.

Most people who know him think of him as odd, but it's his best way of dealing with the disappointment that his life is nothing extraordinary. However, he is about to learn the difference between dreaming about amazing

feats of derring-do and actually living them.

Walter's company faces a threat that could put it out of existence and all of his co-workers out of a job. He becomes embroiled in a globetrotting mission to save it, allowing him to live out the sorts of adventures that he'd always dreamed of. While he learns the thrill of actually living life to the

WEDNESDAY, April 16th 2014

If you want changes to occur then this is the time to go for it, you will be feeling more alive inside than you have for a while and will have the energy to instigate movement in areas that you feel have become stagnant. Romantic relationships can become very passionate and sensual and benefits will occur if you let go of your need to control a certain outcome and let the journey take you to destinations unknown. At the moment the focus for you is on getting things done, this is when you need to put your heart and soul into everything you do and take on the tough, rough projects that need finishing, that you could have been avoiding. A lot depends upon your ability to interact and cooperate with others and passions are rising, either someone from your past may re-enter your life, or you will be concentrating on preparing a foundation for a firmer commitment to a loved one. Be aware of some unexpected drama occurring just when you thought something was all settled and sorted out. On your part you may also be quite fiery and there will be a temptation to verbally react to any injustice you could be witnessing. Loyalty versus betrayal are common themes and you may have the opportunity to finally deal with something that has been under lock and key. By the weekend you will need your own space to recharge so take it easy and be kind to yourself.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

Use up your leftover fruit buns in this sumptuous spin on traditional bread and butter pudding - a great spring bake, Prep: 20 mins Cook: 40 mins

Hot cross bread & lemon pudding Ingredients:

• knob of butter, for the dish • 4 stale hot cross buns • 200g lemon curd • 2 large eggs • 200ml double cream • 200ml milk • ½ tsp vanilla extract • 4 tbsp caster sugar • little lemon zest • cream or vanilla ice cream, to serve (optional)

This week will let you know who is with you and who you can truly rely upon, these are the people who are not only there when the sun shines but also when the clouds come. Others could be looking to you for clues as to what they need to do next, take your time and stay focused and on track making sure things are done correctly first time, lead by example and stay out of the way of any dramas. The area of love and romance is calling you and time spent meeting and socialising with others will invigorate you and lift your spirits this week. Your creativity is soaring and you will be looking to express yourself in more non-verbal ways, choosing an outlet for this whether it be dancing, writing or drawing. Productive thought patterns created by an increase in creative activity will allow you to make an undeniable breakthrough over something that was causing you heartbreak. Your ability to get along with others and communicate effectively makes you ahead of the game, this combined with your keen analytical skills it is hard to get anything past you. This week is loaded with problems that need solving, wake up calls that encourage you to look ahead and plan for the future. Your emotions are powerful at the moment so don’t be hurried into making choices or decisions, take your time.

LIBRA

Well enough is enough, there is no way you can be quiet any longer, you are compelled to speak up, by having the courage to do this you will find that your opponent falls at your feet. The reason it will work is that no-one would see it coming, especially from a gentle soul like you who in the main likes to keep the peace. They need a wakeup call and you have the ability to give it to them. Tensions September 23rd - and strains will ease up by the weekend when you can relax and take it easy.

Directions 1. Butter a 1-litre baking dish that will quite snugly fit the buns. Cut each bun into 3 slices, and sandwich back together with a generous spreading of curd. Arrange buns in the dish. 2. Whisk egg, cream, milk and remaining curd, then sieve into a jug with the vanilla and 3 tbsp of the sugar. Pour over the buns and stand at room temperature for 30 mins for the custard to soak in.

A new door is about to open, your relationships are to receive a new level of intention, it is time to release any lingering resentment from the past so that you can now embrace a new beginning. As the week progresses there is an air of confidence about you that shows off your individuality and charisma. Personal finances need attention and you will be balancing the books in order to figure out the extent of your resources so you can plan for the future.

Expect any relationships that have been operating on autopilot to be in for some turbulent change, anything that needs to surface will come out into the light of day for you both to deal with. It is no longer viable for you to exist without being aware of each other on a deeper level. If you want something from another then this is the time to speak up and ask, the more you take action right now the stronger you will get and the more productive life will be. Perhaps you wish right now that you could change the heart of another, the thing is you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink no matter what you try and do. You have a temptation to control certain outcomes within relationships but in all honesty this week there is no way of knowing how something is going to pan out no matter what you do. Be flexible and go with the flow remaining a pillar of support for those loved ones who may need a helping hand.

Anything that has been swept under the rug needs to be dealt with, this is what this month is all about. There are no short cuts and pretending that something is resolved when it isn’t only delays the inevitable. You will wish to seek more harmony and resolutions within your relationships and conversation held over the next few weeks will help to steer you back on track. This is a good time to come up with a structured plan of what you would like to achieve over the next 3 months. There is an increasing emotional current on the move and right now it may feel as if it is the calm before the storm, you will have a great amount of support, so consider this to be a week of clearing karma as the truth of another’s intentions are exposed. There is success in overcoming obstacles so be prepared to take action when it feels right. You may have to be the one to step forward and show your leadership skills in action.

3. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/ gas 3. Scatter the remaining sugar and lemon zest over the pudding. Bake for 30-40 mins until the top is golden and the custard gently set. BBC Sport app update for iOS/Android adds live goal alerts

The new BBC Sport app update just made it easier to ditch the radio or Twitter if you're trying to have a sneaky look at how your team is doing. The free BBC Sport app for iOS and Android has been given a major update which adds real-time live notifications. The update includes kick-off, real-time goal alerts, half-time scores and full-time result for more than 150 UK football teams. For those football fans stranded from their TV every Saturday, this app will no doubt come as a big relief, especially when you consider that 71 per cent of all weekend traffic for BBC Sport comes from smartphones, iPads and tablets. The app does already have a focus on football, however it also contains sections for rugby, cricket, f1, tennis,

golf, as well as international events such as World Cup 2014 and Commonwealth games. The app update was launched as a result of audience research and will continue to work with user's feedback, so hopefully it will tick all the boxes for football fans. The BBC Sport team have also made it clear they have plans to further add to the app, adding more types of alerts, even more personalisation and expanding it to outside the UK - so keep your eyes peeled, there's more to come.

Dear Sue,

Now the weather is warmer I would like to look a little browner, but my friends tell me fake tan from a bottle or tube always looks fake. Can I make it look natural? Kay, London Dear Kay,

To get a natural look please exfoliate first, particularly on elbows, knees and ankles. Moisturise with a good quality lotion and apply a thin layer of tanning lotion.

Wait a few hours or overnight, build it up gradually until you get the colour you want...don't be heavy handed and if in doubt get it done professionally. Dear Sue,

I have one finger nail that constantly splits down how can I get it to grow? Nigella, Competa Dear Nigella,

I will guess that you may have injured that nail in the past? This is usually a

scar on the nail bed. To help it mend try a coating of fibre glass and resin, this is the kindest type of false nail that can act as a splint until the nail repairs itself. If it has been this way for a few years, it will take a long time but gel and acrylic nails will weaken it further. Apply lots of nail oil at the base and massage it to try to stimulate circulation. Try to keep it out of water as if the nail is lifting any water entering can lead to fungus infections. Dear Sue,

I seem to have a lot if

cuticles around my finger nails that I am having to cut, more and more frequently. What can I do? Maureen, Mijas Costa Dear Maureen

When you cut cuticles it is like cutting hard skin, they will grow back even more. So please try to resist the urge and use a nail oil, then just push them back gently. Very quickly you will see they become soft again and you should only need to trim any hangnails, continue

hydrating them and even this should stop. You can always speed the process up by applying oil and sleeping in cotton gloves so that the oil penetrates even deeper. Hi Sue,

I have a beauty question, when using the Guniot shimmer self tan on my face, is it ok to exfoliate once a week or will it go patchy? Thanks Jackie, Torreblanca Hi Jackie

Yes it is a really good idea to

exfoliate once a week when using self tan as it prevents a build up particularly on necks and other crevices. I suggest a good cleanser and toner, apply a hydrating mask, and some moisturizer before applying self tan. You will always get a better result on hydrated skin If you have any questions for Calvin or Sue, you can contact them on email – Calvin, calton1@hotmail .co.uk and Sue’s email is aniathome05 @gmail.com. ‘Millions wasted on flu drug’ says Cochrane Collaboration

Hundreds of millions of pounds may have been wasted on a drug for flu that works no better than paracetamol, according to a report by the UK-based non-profit organisation, the Cochrane Collaboration, which specialises in health care issues. The UK has spent £473m on Tamiflu, but the Cochrane Collaboration has claimed that the drug did not prevent the spread of flu or reduce dangerous complications, and only slightly helped symptoms.

Lords 20 Years

The antiviral drug Tamiflu was stockpiled from 2006 in the UK when some agencies were predicting that a pandemic of bird flu could kill up to 750,000 people in Britain. Similar decisions were made in other countries. Drug companies do not publish all their research data. This report is the result of a long fight for the previously hidden data into the effectiveness and side-effects of Tamiflu. It concluded that the drug reduced the persistence of flu symptoms from seven

days to 6.3 days in adults and to 5.8 days in children. But the report's authors said drugs such as paracetamol could have a similar impact. On claims that the drug prevented complications such as pneumonia developing, Cochrane suggested the trials were so poor there was "no visible effect". Another justification for stockpiling was to slow the spread of the disease to give time for a vaccine to be developed. The report's authors said "the case for this is simply unproven" and

"there is no credible way these drugs could prevent a pandemic". It also claimed that the drug had a number of sideeffects, including nausea, headaches, psychiatric events, kidney problems and hyperglycaemia. The report's authors told reporters: "We think the whole £500m has not benefited human health in any way and we may have harmed people.

SUNRISE "The system that exists for producing evidence on

drugs is so flawed and open to misuse that the public has been misled."

The pharmaceutical company Roche, which manufactures Tamiflu, said "we disagree with the overall conclusions" and warned they could "potentially have serious public health implications". Its UK medical director, Dr Daniel Thurley, said the Cochrane group had used the wrong statistics, which "systematically underestimate the benefits" of the drug, and

used "unorthodox" methods to analyse the side-effects. The Department of Health said Britain was recognised as "one of the best prepared countries in the world for a potential flu pandemic" and "our stockpile of antivirals is a key part of this.

The World Health Organization, which classes Tamiflu as an essential medicine, said: "We welcome a new and rigorous analysis of available data, and look forward to consideration of its findings after it appears."

Granny in semi-finals following golden buzzer! Brit Salsa queen wins over Simon Cowell despite him yawning at her first appearance

… she lives in Gandia, near Valencia but went down an absolute storm with the audience in the UK

Simon Cowell yawned and the Britain’s Got Talent audience looked suitably shocked in Saturday’s opening episode of the show as a diminutive 79 year old sporting a saucy salsa dance took to the stage accompanied by a tall Spaniard half her age. Judge David Walliams commented that the pair reminded him of a Little Britain sketch, and then the music started....and from a slow start Sarah ‘Paddy’ Jones suddenly was hoisted onto the shoulders of her partner Nico Espinosa, swung between his legs and

Cowell had buzzed almost immediately but was rocked by the step up in pace and the audience went wild – and judge Amanda Holden used the new ‘golden buzzer’ to ensure the British granny, who lives in Gandia near Valencia, automatically went through to the semi finals. Later show producers were forced to defend the appearance of Paddy, who back in 2009 won Spain’s equivalent show Tu Si Que Vales, and who forced her

way into the Guinness Book of Records in 2010 as the world’s oldest acrobatic salsa dancer. They said that none of the judges knew who Paddy and Nico were – so the disdainful look on Simon’s face must have been genuine then. They added that the show is open to all comers, including professionals and those who have appeared on other reality shows. Paddy went to Nico’s dance school after her husband David died – and that’s where it all started.

And if you missed the show, take a look at You Tube!

We’ll meet Egg on Grumpy Cat again at top of their the charts face Easter is coming and, as we all know, everybody loves a chocolate Easter egg – especially the kids.

However, Thornton’s refused to put the name of little 3-year-old Rooney Scholes on his egg through fear that Wayne Rooney might sue for breach of copywrite. Forces sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn is about to take the charts by storm again – in her 97th year.

Her wartime songs are being re-released and the album will include three previously lost tracks found in the archives by her daughter Virginia.

The album is being released to mark the 70th anniversary of D Day on June 6th and Dame Vera is part of the curriculum for youngsters learning about the Second World War, along with Winston

Churchill and Hitler. Dame Vera will never again sing her famous ‘We’ll Meet Again’ in front of an audience but the new album marks a career spanning 90 years –she first sang in public at the age of 7 in a working men’s club.

The last time Dame Vera made the charts was in 2009, when White Cliffs of Dover and We’ll Meet Again kept the Arctic Monkeys off the No. 1 slot – so rock and pop stars will be looking over their shoulder come June 6th.

His mother is a life-long Manchester United fan who has cats named Cantona and Berbatov plus her 16-year-old is called Anderson but the store in Bury sited the fact that a lot of superstar footballers trademark their names globally to stop their names being used on fake merchandise. But on a little boy’s chocolate Easter Egg? Pleeease! And we’re absolutely sure that family man Wayne would be horrified to hear the story. Shame on you Thornton’s in Bury!

It is with a great deal of sadness that I have to tell you that this will be my last astronomy article for The News.

ach week for almost five and a half years I have written a different article about astronomy. I have covered each of the planets individually, as well as the Sun, the Moon and the asteroids. We’ve had several eclipses over the last five years both lunar and solar and I’ve explained how and when to watch them. I have told of various meteor showers that occur throughout the year and explained what causes them. We’ve gone through galaxies, nebulas, red giants, white dwarfs and even telling scary stories about black holes. I even ran an April fool joke one year saying that there would be reduced gravity on the Earth on April 1st, and that small pets should be kept in their cages until it was over. I don’t know how I got away with it sometimes. n 271 issues of The News I have talked about the stars and how they were formed and how they will die, the different types of stars and how they got their names. I’ve pointed out the various constellations and how to recognise them, you should also be able to navigate by the stars by now! have pre-warned about sightings of the International Space Station and I had half of Spain believing that if they waved at the astronauts then they would lean out of the window and wave back. And how we all miss the launches of the Space Shuttles and catching glimpses of it when it was docking with the ISS. As the 40th anniversaries of the Apollo moon landings came round I wrote a synopsis of each mission and I did an obituary to Neil Armstrong and Sir Patrick Moore when they died. o you remember our disappointment when ‘The Comet of The Century’, Comet Ison, fizzled out last Christmas and became the damp squib of the century. ’ve covered flying saucers, astrology, crop circles and E.T. and I even offered an explanation for The Star of Bethlehem, I don’t think I’ve left a stone unturned. ut all good things must come to pass. I’m back in Liverpool now with my wife Marilyn and three lovely granddaughters’ Chloe (9), Olivia (6) and the bully of them all Emily aged 2. I’ve gone back to working in my previous life as a maintenance electrician. ’ll still be coming back and forth to Spain to do presentations in the English speaking schools and I will

maintain my website www.costadelstars.com keeping you up to date with any astronomical events. I’ve even been invited to go to the Sahara desert in October to do a series of talks under the pitch black skies; I know I’m going to get lost with so many stars to see! y friend Lee Osborne is continuing to run the astronomy society that I formed back in 2007 at www.astronomycostadelsol. He holds observing sessions and regular meetings and is doing a grand job of it, I highly recommend that you go along as they are really nice people and have some fantastic equipment. ym Whickham at The News has been a lovely editor and has basically given me a free rein to write whatever I wanted to. Through her newspaper she has turned me, a humble Scouse electrician, into something of a minor celebrity and I am very grateful to her. have had a lovely time writing for you each week and I hope that you have enjoyed reading my column as much as I have enjoyed writing it.

Too easy for Marc Marquez Marc Marquez admitted he struggled to maintain his concentration as he stormed to a routine victory in the Austin MotoGP. It was the defending world champion's second win at the Circuit of The Americas following his debut MotoGP success in 2013. However, Marquez described his triumph as a 'different kind of race' as he led from the end of the opening lap when Jorge Lorenzo pulled in to serve his jump start penalty, fifth on the grid, Lorenzo shot away so early that he had time to pause, then with the damage already done cut his losses and reaccelerate away before the red lights went out. "I wasn't thinking and was distracted and I made a big mistake in the start," said the Movistar Yamaha rider. “When I arrived for the start I had a lot of mosquitoes on my helmet so I took a tear off, which I never do and for sure this distracted my focus a little”. Changes at Ferrari Stefano Domenicali has stepped down as Ferrari team principal following a poor start to the 2014 season. The new power unit regulations this year offered Ferrari a chance to end Red Bull's dominance, but Mercedes is well clear of the rest of the field and Ferrari has only managed a best result of fourth in Australia; with Fernando Alonso and Raikkonen finishing 9th and 10th respectively in Bahrain. Domenicali has now opted to resign following the poor start to the season, and said he had taken the decision to try and "jolt" the team in to success.

"There are certain moments in the professional life of each of us where it takes courage to make tough decisions," Domenicali said. "It's time to implement a major change. "Again, I take responsibility - as I always have - for the situation we are experiencing. It is a choice taken with the desire to do something to give a jolt to our environment and for the sake of this group, which are closely linked. I sincerely thank all the men and

Australian Ricciardo, 24, was excluded from second place on his debut in March because his car was using more fuel than allowed, and his team refused to reduce the flow when informed. The International Automobile Federation said: "The court decided to uphold the decision of the stewards to exclude Red Bull Racing's car No.3 from the results of the 2014 Australian Grand Prix."

Bubba bags another Masters Malaga fail to Bubba Watson withstood a charging early challenge from playing partner Jordan impress away Spieth ( who had 4 birdies in the first six holes ) to clinch the Masters for a second time in three years with a three-shot victory at Augusta National on Sunday. Trailing the hugely talented Spieth by two strokes after seven holes, Watson reversed everything in the space of two holes, with Spieth bogeying the eigth and ninth holes against two Watson birdies. Watson then dropped a shot at the tenth, but that was as close as Spieth was going to get. At the par three twelfth Spieth's ball rolled back into Rae's creek, he managed to get it up and down for bogey but Watson wasn't about to offer any hope to the youngster, after thumping a 366yd drive at the par 5 thirteenth, leaving just a sand wedge to set up another birdie."His drive on 13 I'll never forget," Spieth said afterwards. Watson, the 35-year-old from Bagad, Florida, known for his distance off the tee, his pink-shafted driver with a pink head and his often audacious shotmaking, covered the back nine in even par to post an

eight-under total of 280. After being warmly embraced by his caddie, Watson shook hands with Spieth before he was then congratulated greenside by his wife Angie and their two-year-old boy Caleb. “This one is a lot different,” a tearyeyed Watson, who had produced surprisingly disciplined golf for most of the week, said before being helped into the coveted green jacket by last year’s Masters champion Adam Scott of Australia. “After giving away that jacket last year, I wanted it back. I told Adam we could just swap it back and forth every year. I never loved green so much,” added the American, who became the 17th player to win the Masters more than once. Spieth, at 20 aiming to eclipse Tiger Woods by

becoming the youngest player to win the Masters, had to settle for a share of second place at five under after signing off with a 72, finishing level with Swede Jonas Blixt (71). “That was fun, but at the same time, it hurts right now,” Spieth said. “I wanted to get in contention on the back nine Sunday, but didn’t come out on top. “Although it sits a little hard right now, I’ll be back and I can’t wait to be back. It was an incredible experience. It was so much fun, it really was. Even if I

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips Beginner Poker

A number of people have said they do not understand the game of poker so reading my articles means nothing to them, so this week lets go through the basic rules of Texas Hold'em. Texas Hold'em is arguably the most popular form of poker. It is widely considered to have the most strategy of all poker games, yet the rules are quite simple. Here is how a hand of Texas Hold'em is played: 1. Hole Cards. Each player is dealt two cards face down. 2. The Flop. Three cards are dealt face up on the table. 3. The Turn. A fourth card is dealt to the table. 4. The River. Finally, a fifth card is dealt to the table. The five cards on the table are community cards. Your hand is formed by taking the best poker hand you can by using any five out of the seven cards (5 community + 2 hole cards). But remember, all the players have access to the community cards. When played for money, there is a round of betting after a round of cards is dealt (so four rounds of betting in total).

Example Hand

1. Hole Cards: You are dealt AsQsYour opponent checks to you. You decide to bet with this hand and one player calls. 2. The Flop: The board is Ad10c9s Right now, you have a pair of aces. You make a bet and the other player calls. 3. The Turn: 10s comes on the board. You know have two pairs, aces and tens. Be aware that if your opponent has a ten in his hole cards, he now has a three-of-akind. However, you also now have the potential of hitting a flush if the river card is another spade. Again, you bet and the player calls. 4.The River: 2s comes on the river. The final board is Ad10c10s9s2s You now have a flush. You make a bet and your opponent calls. 5. Showdown: You show your flush. Your opponent shows Jd10d so he has three-of-a-kind. You win. Now the dealer deals again and we start a new hand and repeat the flop, turn and river.

If you really want to learn the game there is no substitute than playing the game to gain experience however if your playing for money it is going to cost you

to learn. Now if you want to play for money you will learn more quicker than free play, I do advise if playing for money make sure the bankroll you have you can afford to lose and do not play with the rent money.

I will always advise new players to start on line, if you live in Spain for me 888.es offers the best over the rest. Sign up with the site of your choice but do not deposit money what ever fantastic bonus they may offer, wait till you have some experience the deposit bonus will still be there at a later time and you may just not lose it. Spend time on the free play, it is wild and very loose because it is not real money, so you need to play like it is real money and in this mad cyber poker world when you start to win, but not until you start to win regular you may be just ready for the world of real money poker.

Remember start off with the micro stakes because your going to lose money at the start and do not move up to higher stakes until you stop depositing and are winning on a regular basis. Good Luck!

didn’t show it there on the back nine, it was. “I took it all in, standing ovations for both of us to each green. It was a dream come true. Hats off obviously to Bubba, because when he’s driving the ball well out here, he’s very tough to beat.”

Malaga’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, at the ripe age of 50 and aiming to surpass Jack Nicklaus by becoming the oldest Masters winner, finished a respectable fourth after also carding a 71.

Athletic Bilbao's Aritz Aduriz struck early in both halves to lead Athletic to a 3-0 victory over Malaga in La Liga on Monday. Aduriz took his goal tally to 15 in La Liga this season with a header early in the first half and a tap in just after the break, before Ander Herrera capped off Bilbao’s victory in the final half hour thanks to some poor goalkeeping from Willy Caballero. The win maintained Bilbao’s six-point gap on fifth-placed Sevilla as the Basque club push towards a berth in next season’s UEFA Champions League. Bilbao sit fourth in the La Liga table – which includes a spot in the qualifying stages of the Champions League – with 62 points. Malaga were behind after just three minutes with Aduriz rising at the near post to head Markel Susaeta’s corner past Caballero. Bilbao dominated the first half but were unable to get past Malaga’s

defence again until the opening minute of the second when Susaeta made a move down the right and his low cross picked out Aduriz, who scored with his first touch. The goal was Aduriz’s ninth in seven games and completed his second brace in succession. In the 62nd minute, Malaga were well and truly beaten as Herrera’s strike from the edge of the area slipped through Caballero’s hands and into the net. Malaga struggled throughout the 90 minutes to get into the game and finished having had only one real shot on target, not a good performance at all from Bernd Schuster's side This loss put an end to Malaga's mini streak having won their previous two matches but their 15th defeat of the season left them in 11th on 38 points, still just seven points clear of the relegation zone ahead of a tough clash with sixthplaced Villarreal.

Paris-Roubaix Cycling Classic Niki Terpstra won the prestigious Paris-Roubaix one-day race as British duo Geraint Thomas and Bradley Wiggins finished in a group 20 seconds adrift. Dutchman Terpstra broke clear in the last 10km of the 257km race in northern France, which finishes in a velodrome. Thomas and Wiggins were seventh and ninth respectively after John Degenkolb and three-time winner Fabian Cancellara won the sprint for second and third. "There's a tinge of disappointment because I had the legs," said Wiggins. Thomas admitted he was "on his knees" in the final 10km after helping Wiggins close down a gap to the leaders in the closing stages.

Phelps to end retirement Swimmer Michael Phelps, the most successful Olympian in history, is set to end his retirement. The 28-year-old American, who has won 22 Olympic medals, is expected to compete at a meet in Arizona at the end of April. "He's just going to test the waters a little bit and see how it goes," said longtime coach Bob Bowman. "I wouldn't say it's a fullfledged comeback." Phelps quit after winning his 18th Olympic gold at the 2012 London Games.
