Wednesday, April 23rd 2014 Issue 273

Last week our Editor, Kym Wickham, said in her Wickham’s World column that we were about to have some changes here at The News. Here she explains what they are and why we’re doing it. After much research involving both our readers and our advertisers we have realised that, as much as The News in its newspaper form is loved, it’s time for a change. Readers tell us that they don’t in fact hang onto the free newspapers that they pick up every week but they do hang onto the small glossy monthly magazines sometimes for months! and they enjoy having a booklet that they can turn to again and again to find adverts that will point them in the right direction for whatever they need.

Advertisers have been telling us for quite some

time that they like the idea of a good quality advert in a magazine that people will hold onto.

So, after much more research and deliberation, we have decided to give people what they have said they want - a monthly, high quality, glossy magazine. I know that some of you will be disappointed not to have your weekly copy of The News delivered to you each week but, rest assured, we will still be giving you a comprehensive view of all the news sections that you know and love, all the columns will be the same with the exception of Ken Campbell’s Stargazing

which is being taken over by local man Lee Osborne (as recommended to us by Ken), plus all the sections on Health & Beauty, People and Fashion, Puzzles, Letters, Horoscopes, Kym’s Kitchen recipes, our Spanish lesson and of course, Out & About. So you can see that the content will not change much at all, just the format in which you receive it.

The vast majority of our advertisers will be changing with us and I know the readers I’ve already spoken to are looking forward to the new magazine.

last week i told you in this column that we were going to be doing something new. i couldn’t tell you what it was at the time because we hadn’t ironed out all the wrinkles and there were people i had to speak to first. However, this week you can read our front page and know that this is the last copy of the News in its newspaper form that we will be producing as, after much reseach and deliberation we have come to the conclusion that what the majority of people want is a high quality magazine to keep hold of. the News Monthly review is going to be 100 pages so there’s plenty of room to keep the editorial content you all love so, don’t worry, you won’t miss out on a thing! in some ways i shall be sad to see the end of the newspaper but, things have to change with the times and newspapers are, unfortunately, not what people want on the whole. one thing is for sure, i certainly won’t be unhappy to see the back of my 5am start every wednesday to deliver it but, all the lovely people on my round will be seeing me each month and will, no doubt, tell me exactly what they think, bless ‘em! we have already had a lot of interest from new advertisers as well as our current ones so it looks like this is going to be an exciting project for us all. on the subject of my Cambridge 800 consulting sessions, they are going from strength to strength and people are most definitely losing weight on it. i have to admit that i fell off the wagon last week for easter but i’m back on it now and, oh boy, didn’t that choccy egg taste divine! to join in with my Cambridge 800 regime call me on 663 917 081. i will be holding group sessions or, if you’re more comfortable with it, oneto-one sessions at various times and in various places, so let’s all get a better look for summer.

The residents of Paraños in Pontevedra province, Galicia, were shocked to see their rectory up for sale on a real estate website in March 2009.

They discovered that the building, which they all helped preserve with their savings, had been sold behind their backs by the Diocese of Tui in 2008 for €60,000 to Carlos GómezGil Aizpurúa, then a restoration technician with the Galician department of culture who had power over the granting of subsidies to restore Church-owned assets. They were even more shocked when they saw that Gómez-Gil, who had yet to pay a single penny to the Church, was asking €680,000 for the

The parish priest, Juan Sobrino, a personal friend of Gómez-Gil and now a target in the corruption investigation under way, had repeatedly denied local accusations that he had wrongfully sold the building, although the title deed shows he was at the notary’s office where the sale was officially closed. The villagers filed a complaint with the attorney’s office, and investigators found a link with another case under in a Santiago courthouse in connection with Galician government subsidies to several Catholic dioceses to restore ecclesiastical heritage. The name Carlos Gómez-Gil Aizpurúa was on all the contracts signed between the Church and restoration companies.

The police eventually uncovered what they believed was a grants-forcontracts corruption ring, and “Operation Altarpiece” was launched. Investigators allege that Gómez-Gil awarded subsidies to Church officials who promised to hire the restoration companies he suggested, who in turn returned the favour in cash or gifts, or in the form of free restoration work for Gómez-Gil.

A total of 12 people are under investigation for fraud, bribery of public officials, influence peddling and other crimes between 2003 and 2009. The judge in charge of the case and the police believe that the rectory was never really sold to Gómez-Gil,

Change of name proposed

after living with the name for more than 500 years, the 60 residents of the village of Castrillo Matajudíos (Castrillo Kill the jews) in Burgos province, Castilla-leon, will vote on a proposal put forward by Mayor lorenzo rodríguez, to revert to what is believed to be its original name, Castrillo Mota de judios (Castrillo jews Hill). it acquired this name in 1035 when jews fleeing a pogrom in a nearby village took refuge on the hill. after the jews were expelled from spain in 1492, "someone wrote that now we're more Christian we should change the name from jews' Hill to Kill the jews," rodriguez said. as he made the announcement during the first days of the Passover holiday, there was no immediate response from spain's jewish leadership. today there are only about 12,000 jews in spain, compared with 290,000 in the uK and 478,000 in France. in 2008 a survey carried out by the Pew research Centre found spain to be one of the most anti-semitic countries in europe. Easter traffic deaths soar

the number of people killed on the roads over the easter vacation this year is considerably higher than the final death toll for the same period in 2013, the dGt traffic authority reported on Monday. Between april 11 and midnight Monday, a total of 35 people died in accidents, up from 26 deaths reported during the same period last year – the lowest easter fatality figures since the government began recording such data in 1962. dGt officials warned that the number of deaths could rise once all accident figures are collated, given that they only cover the country’s highways and freeways.

despite the hike in road deaths this year, dGt officials said that fatalities are still down from levels seen 10 years ago, when a total of 102 people died in traffic accidents during the easter break. Five years ago, the death toll for the same period was 46. some 12.5 million people travelled by road over easter week – about half-a-million fewer than last year.

Queen Victoria and Napoleon III turned down plans for a Channel Tunnel

New strategy King nearly misses for Basque Cup match independence King Juan Carlos arrived in Spain 45 minutes behind schedule last Wednesday due to a mechanical failure in the Air Force A-310 airplane that had to bring him back from the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait where he had been seeking investment opportunities for Spanish businesses.

Basque regional leader, or lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, revealed what he called the Basque alternative to hundreds of members of the Basques Nationalist Party (PNV) who were celebrating Aberri Eguna, or Basque Homeland Day in the Plaza Nueva in Bilbao on Sunday.

accept that “Spain is no longer one country”. He said Franco's vision of Spain as "one, great and free" "are behind us, and it is the time to accept that Euskadi is the homeland of the Basques, to begin to dialogue, reach agreement and ratify.”

The fault in a fuel valve on one of the engines was repaired in around 30 minutes, enabling the King to see the start of the Cup match between Real Madrid and Barcelona in Valencia. The plane is an Airbus A-310 which belongs to the government and is used by the prime minister as well as the royal family. It was the

fifth mechanical failure in aircraft used to transport members of the Spanish royal household in the last six months. In late March, Queen Sofía landed at Torrejón air base three hours late due to a breakdown in the official plane flying her back from Guatemala. Prince Felipe had to cancel

a trip to Brazil last November because of a mechanical failure.

Two months later, another glitch forced the prince to wait nine hours in Santo Domingo while he was on his way to Honduras for the swearing-in of the new president, Juan Orlando Hernández.

The PNV wants its own state within the European framework, together with Navarre and the French Basque provinces. But it has rejected the federal option being proposed by the main opposition Socialist Party, and the independence drive currently under way in Catalonia as the routes to take to achieve that aim.

Urkullu said he will not be making any unilateral declarations of independence, as the terrorist group ETA or the radical abertzale left want him to do – at least not for the moment. Instead, he said the PNV would move toward sovereignty step by step, in a process that he described as “dialogue, negotiation, agreement and ratification” to achieve a new relationship with Spain, which could be understood as a “confederate model” based on the respect of historical rights.

The new status, he said, would require reforms to the Spanish Constitution. Urkullu said Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, and the Socialist opposition leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba must

Germany's announcement that it is closing its The Job of My Life programme will affect some 4,500 Spaniards aged 18 to 35 who had applied for it.

The €400-million programme was set up at the beginning of last year to attract young people from some of Europe’s hardest-hit economies, such as Greece and Spain, to work in Germany. The aim was to provide financial aid to young people in their own countries while they learned German, help them with interviews and then help them move to Germany to look for work.

The programme was initially scheduled to run until 2018 but this year’s budget of €48 million has already been spent. A spokesman for the

WEDNESDAY, April 23rd 2014

The High Court public prosecutor has opened an investigation into the @HumorrNegro (Black humour) Twitter account for making jokes about people with disabilities.

One victim was journalist Irene Villa, who lost her legs in an attack by Basque terrorist group ETA in the 1990s. The account will also be investigated for inciting

racial hatred, according to a report by the Office of Attention for Disability, which is part of the Health Ministry.

The Spanish Committee of People with Disabilities (CERMI) reported the content of the Twitter account to the Office of Attention for Disability. The complaint was passed on to the Guardia Civil, which in turn sent the case

to the High prosecutor.

Court

If the court decides that the comments constitute a criminal offense, steps will be taken “to bring them to an end and for those responsible to be held to account.” CERMI has also sent a letter to Twitter calling on it to block accounts whose content repeatedly breaches the dignity and rights of people

with disabilities, of whom there are four million in Spain.

@HumorrNegro describes itself as an account for “black humour and absurd jokes.” It has more than 164,000 followers and also publishes a steady stream of xenophobic, racist and sexist jokes, as well as those inciting hatred or violence.

Unlike with other similar accounts, the people behind @HumorrNegro do not

profess to follow any ideology or political party.

On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the Kiev authorities of breaking last week's Geneva accord on resolving the Ukraine crisis. He said the Kiev government not recognised by Moscow had not moved to disarm illegal groups, especially the ultra-nationalist Right Sector. The authorities in Kiev blamed Russia for the instability. In a phone call, Mr Lavrov urged US

Secretary of State John Kerry "to influence Kiev, to prevent hotheads there from provoking a bloody conflict," according to the Kremlin. Mr Kerry "urged Russia to take concrete steps to help implement the Geneva agreement, including publicly calling on separatists to vacate illegal buildings and checkpoints".

Meanwhile, funerals were held for three men shot on Sunday. The men were killed during a raid

on a checkpoint manned by pro-Russian separatists near the town of Sloviansk in eastern Ukraine in circumstances that remain unclear. The local separatists said the attack was carried out by the Right Sector militants. Kiev called it a "provocation" staged by Russian special forces. The US State Department released photos of soldiers in eastern Ukraine on Monday, which it said showed that some of the

fighters are special forces.

Russian

The crisis began last November, when Kiev was gripped by protests against President Viktor Yanukovych over his rejection of an economic pact with the EU. He fled to Russia, which then annexed Crimea following a regional referendum that approved joining the Russian federation. The annexation provoked international outrage.

Conflicting reports of abductions Some 190 Nigerian schoolgirls remain missing after being abducted last week, their head teacher has told reporters - far more than the official figure. Asabe Kwambura said the parents of 234 girls had reported them missing but 40 had

managed to escape. Earlier, a local state governor said that about 77 of the teenagers had not been accounted for. When news first emerged of the kidnap last Tuesday, initial reports said more than 200 students had been seized but state officials soon downgraded the numbers,

saying the correct figure was about 130. The students were about to sit their final year exam and so are aged 16-18. Islamist group Boko Haram is suspected to be behind the kidnapping but has not issued any statement.

Some 1,500 people are believed to have been killed in attacks blamed on Boko Haram this year alone. The group, whose name means "Western education is forbidden", is fighting to establish Islamic law in Nigeria. It often targets educational establishments.

at the national Forum on women Shaping economy and Culture in Tehran, he criticised "those who consider women's presence society as a threat" and said iran still had "a long way to go" to ensure gender equality. He said: "we will not accept the culture of sexual discrimination. women must enjoy equal opportunity, equal protection and equal social rights." He noted: "according to the islamic rules, man is not the stronger sex and woman is not the weaker one." His comments were broadcast live on television. But Supreme leader ayatollah ali Khamenei, the highest authority in iran, said afterwards that gender equality was "one of the biggest mistakes of the western thought". He said he did not oppose women's employment, but that it should not conflict with "the main issue", which was women's role in the "family environment and household". The human rights group amnesty international said in its 2013 report on iran that women there "faced discrimination in law and practice in relation to marriage and divorce, inheritance, child custody, nationality and international travel".

Teenager survives flight in wheel well

a 16-year-old boy has survived an extraordinary journey hidden in the wheel well of a five-hour flight from California to Hawaii. a spokesman for Hawaiian airlines said airline staff noticed the boy after the plane landed on Sunday morning in Maui, when he hopped down from the wheel well and started wandering around the airport grounds. His only possession when he landed was a comb for his hair. He survived a lack of oxygen and freezing temperatures as the plane climbed to 39,000ft. The spokesman said the boy had been unconscious for most of the journey. The boy is reported to have run away from home and jumped over a fence at San Jose airport to get to the plane. authorities are deciding whether to file criminal charges against the boy. Since records began in 1947, about 100 wheel well stowaways are thought to have attempted to board flights, of whom around three-quarters died.

Violent Easter in Caracas

Fresh violence erupted in the capital, Caracas, between police and opponents of President nicolas Maduro, when masked protesters burned effigies of the president after a rally called "Resurrection of democracy" on Sunday. The rally started with a "Via Crucis" march, mirroring Jesus's walk to crucifixion. "we're staying in the street until we get our country back," student leader djamil Jassir, 22, told reporters. another protester said: "There are many who have already died and it's for them that we're here. They're not going to have an easter again, nor carnival." More than 40 people have died in violent protests since February and hundreds of people have been arrested. The demonstrations started with students demanding action to tackle Venezuela's high crime rate, its growing inflation and shortages of certain food staples. They have since grown into a wider opposition movement and many of the protesters say they will not stop until Maduro's government resigns.

Kraft recalls 96,000lb of hot dogs

Kraft Foods is voluntarily recalling 96,000lb (43,545kg) of its Oscar Mayer hot dogs in the US because they may have been sold in the wrong packaging. The US department of agriculture's Food Safety and inspection Service (USda) said Kraft's Oscar Mayer Classic wieners may mistakenly contain Classic Cheese dogs instead. Cheese sausages contain dairy products, which can cause allergic reactions. However, both Kraft and federal authorities said they have not received reports of any adverse reactions. Kraft said it was notified of the problem by a consumer last Friday and alerted the USda the following day. The 16-oz sausage packages were produced in March at a plant in Columbia, Missouri and distributed throughout the US. This is not the first time that Kraft - one of north america's biggest packaged foods companies - has been forced to pull products off the shelves. More than 1,000,000lb of its Velveeta Cheesy Skillets were recalled in January because of improper labelling which did not disclose that they contained known soy allergens.

South Korea ferry death toll rises the

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

The confirmed death toll from the South Korean ferry that capsized last week passed 100 on Monday, bringing the total number of dead to 113, with another 189 are missing, presumed trapped inside the vessel. Military divers continue searching the ship for those who died and the bodies of victims are being brought back to the port on Jindo island at a steady rate. Divers have managed to reach many of the cabins in the hull of the upturned ferry, although they are still trying to get into the ship's restaurant, where they believe many of the passengers were trapped.

The ferry tipped over and sank within two hours, but it is not yet clear why. Seven crew

members have been detained, however, amid intense criticism of their failure to evacuate all passengers as the ship listed. Passengers were told to remain in rooms and cabins, amid confusion on the bridge over whether to order them to abandon ship. South Korean President Park Geun-hye on Monday condemned the conduct of some of the crew, calling it "akin to murder".

Investigations are focusing on whether the ferry took too sharp a turn

- perhaps destabilising the vessel - before it started listing and whether an earlier evacuation order could have saved lives. Captain Lee Joon-seok was not on the bridge when the ferry began listing. It was being steered by a third mate who had never navigated the waters where the accident occurred, prosecutors said. The captain and two other crew members have been charged with negligence of duty and violation of maritime law.

Mexico and Colombia have held public commemorations for Nobel prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who died last Thursday in Mexico City aged 87.

The presidents of Colombia and Mexico on Monday attended a formal ceremony in Mexico City, where Garcia Marquez lived for more than three decades. Earlier, Colombia held a ceremony of its own in Garcia Marquez's birthplace of Aracataca, the inspiration for Macondo, the setting for his 1967 seminal masterpiece One Hundred Years of Solitude,

which sold millions of copies around the world. He was considered the finest writer of the Spanish language since Cervantes. Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos said: "He was probably the greatest Colombian we

have had in our history."The world knows about Colombia through Gabriel GarcĂa Marquez. He represented what Colombia is in many ways. His magic realism is - and he said it - not an invention. It's a description of what Colombia is."

French hostages tell of ordeal French journalists released from captivity in Syria have been speaking about their ordeal at the hands of suspected Islamist rebels. Didier Francois said the four men were chained to each other and kept in basements without natural light. His colleague Nicolas Henin

added that they were "not always well treated". The two men, along with Edouard Elias and Pierre Torres, had been found by Turkish soldiers on the Syrian border late on Friday.

The jihadist group Islamic State of Iraq and

the Levant (ISIS) has been accused of kidnapping them. The men went missing in two separate incidents last June. Syria has also become one of the most dangerous places for journalists, with more than 60 killed since the beginning of the uprising against President Assad.

Referendum on Scotland could bring close result People living outside Britain and those who have not visited the country for some time must be wondering what is going on, with a Scottish Government, a Welsh Assembly and now pressure for an independent Scotland and a referendum to decide the issue on September 18th. We all live on a small island. Do we really find it so hard to get along together and is there such mistrust for a Westminster Government that we feel the need to slice a once proud nation into pieces?

the result much closer that the ‘No’ lobby would like. There is still several months of campaigning ahead and plenty of time to close the gap further.

The Yes Scotland campaign group suggests it would only take a two point swing to ensure victory and is confident of getting that.

The Better Together campaign, which has the support of the three main parties at Westminster, is taking note and is

Car fires may be rare, but they are particularly unwelcome when you are visiting a safari park and happen to be in the lion enclosure with two children in the vehicle. That was the situation that faced a 43-year-old mother who was visiting

The fire eventually engulfed the vehicle before the fire brigade arrived and extinguished it.

Teachers may strike Gentle giant murdered theNews Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) have warned that children may be faced with school closures for a day during the week beginning June 23rd if their members vote for strike action over pay, pensions and conditions.

Children across England and Wales could face school closures and disruption in June as teachers vote for industrial action. Teachers say they will strike if "significant" progress is not made to resolve the long-running dispute and a vast majority of their 900 delegates at the annual conference in Brighton voted for the walkout with more days off likely for the autumn if a settlement isn’t reached.

Delegate Hazel Danson told Sky News: "What we're angry about is not just our pay and conditions, and the pension issue - it's what this Education Secretary Michael Gove is doing to the education of our children. It feels like he's putting a wrecking ball through state education. We've got a secretary of state who will not engage with us in any constructive way at all. We feel very frustrated about that."

Hundreds of thousands of children across England and Wales could face school closures and disruption to lessons. And all this despite recent fines for parents

who take their children out of school for days in term time citing that it “damages the education of the child”. Exam timetables show at least a dozen GCSE and A-level papers will be sat on June 23 and 24.

The Department of Education said any strikes would disrupt families and harm children's education. "Ministers have met frequently with the NUT and other unions and will continue to do so," a spokesman said, adding: "Further strike action will only disrupt parents' lives, hold back children's education and damage the reputation of the profession.

Tony Gilchrist, 35, originally from Staines in Surrey has been killed by a disgruntled employee he had fired for turning up to work drunk at his scuba diving shop called Fish Buddies on the island of Malapascua in the Phillipines. He had been shot four times in the chest by Melchor Alciso Jr, 42, who had been employed as the security guard and who had been warned before for his drunkenness according to reports. Mr Gilchrist, who was 6’8” tall and known locally as a “Gentle Giant” raised £10,000 for victims of the devastating typhoon that struck the islands last November and helped out

wherever he could. His family said Gilchrist considered the Philippines home "and somewhat of a paradise". They added: "This is a hard time for our family and for you, his closest friends. It's important to remember that Tone was genuinely the happiest he's ever been and lived his life as a loving, generous, kind, thoughtful person, with no malice in his heart. Both his brothers James and Stephen are now in the Philippines to arrange all the necessary to bring Tony home and see to it that justice is fully served upon the perpetrator of this tragic event."

Nurse arrested A 37-year-old British nurse told yesterday of her "hellish" experience in Sri Lanka after she was arrested and sent to a deportation centre for showing a Buddha tattoo deemed offensive by authorities. Naomi Coleman was arrested at the country's main international airport on Monday shortly after her arrival on a flight from neighbouring India and appeared before a magistrate who ordered her deportation, police said in a statement.

"It is a terrible, hellish experience," Coleman, a mental health nurse from Coventry in England, told AFP by telephone at the Sri Lankan deportation centre. "I am a practising Buddhist and meditate. That is why I have the tattoo -- not out of disrespect for Buddhism."

The tattoo covered most of her upper right arm.

Fake art dealer Fire disrupts online betting arrested Art dealer Jose Carlos Bergantiños Diaz suspected of having dealt in millions of dollars of fake art and wanted for fraud in the United States - was arrested on Friday at a luxury hotel in Seville. Glafira Rosales, Bergantinos Diaz's partner, was arraigned in New York last August, accused of peddling counterfeit art for 15 years as undiscovered works by world-renowned artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. Rosales has been accused of charging two Manhattan art galleries more than $30m for 63 pieces of fake art. Prosecutors said the galleries sold the paintings for more than $80m,

earning nearly $48m in profits. The canvasses had actually been created by a painter working from a studio at his home in Queens. Each bogus piece was exposed to extreme temperatures and the outdoors to artificially age it, authorities said. The police said Bergantiños Diaz was so surprised by his arrest that he had to be attended by medical workers. He is to appear this week before a judge, who will rule on the steps for a likely extradition to the US.

An explosion and fire on Gibraltar disrupted a number of online betting operations on Sunday, and most residents were also left without power.

Local media reported a generator at Waterport Power Station caught fire and exploded due to a mechanical failure. Emergency services rushed to the scene, the power station was evacuated and the fire quickly extinguished. No-one was injured, but the outage

shut down the online betting operations of several firms, including William Hill, Betfred and Ladbrokes, which are based in Gibraltar.

Online gambling is an important part of Gibraltar's economy with international companies choosing to base themselves there because of the territory's low taxes. William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said its services were disrupted for about two-and-a-half hours. He told reporters: "It was just one of those freak events nobody could have predicted. "There will be those who will claim they would have backed a winner but there will be others who have been saved from backing a loser."

Fifteen new official suspects named in ERE inquiry the

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Judge Mercedes Alaya has named 15 more people - including a former Popular Party provincial deputy for Jaén, Ramon Polo - as official suspects in her wide-reaching investigation into the misappropriation of public funds destined to help companies pay severance to workers in the Andalusia region.

Polo is suspected of having been given an early-retirement package worth €31,722 from the company Gres de Vilches, despite not being entitled

to the money. Other new official suspects include José Luis Montesinos, secretary general of Fiteqa, a branch of the CCOO labour union covering the chemical sector. Judge Alaya also ordered the arrest of businessman José Ángel Martín Moreno, owner of a company called Gestifesa, which acted as a consultancy for companies seeking public subsidies. A total of 159 people have now been named as official suspects in the probe known as the “ERE

case,” after the acronym for a mass-layoff process. Other new official suspects include José Luis Montesinos, secretary general of Fiteqa, a branch of the CCOO labour union covering the chemical sector. According to prosecutors, an estimated €140 million was siphoned off between 2001 and 2010 from the labour force adjustment (ERE) fund set up under the Socialist regional government. The highestranking figure to so far be implicated in the

Old and new

I

'm sitting here looking at a blank screen because I'm not sure how I feel about the paper's new format. On the one hand, writing online will give me more scope to be creative - I won't be limited by space so I can write snappier news pieces and get more on the page because the headlines will take up less space. The idea is to update the online version throughout the week so I may even be able to write several shorter columns rather than the length imposed on me by the printed page. I'll also be able to write when the mood takes me and not leave it until Monday or Tuesday. The problem about a weekly paper is that many stories are old hat by the time the paper goes to press. On the other hand, I know many people still like to feel a paper or book in their hands. I'm sure it will all work out in the end so it's a case of hasta la vista and not goodbye.

O

ne news item that will far better online because it can be updated more quickly as the current mega-crisis is about to burst in Andalusia. We have the ongoing ERE scandal which has just been joined by the bogus training programmes scandal in which an estimated €1.5 billion in funds from the EU has been given to companies over the past few years. I was spitting blood for most of last year, when the national press gave far more coverage to the light-fingered financial shenanigans of the Partido Popular's former treasurer, Luis Barcenas, and ignored the ERE scandal. According to people in the know, the estimated amount of money stolen in that scandal will probably end up at around €1.2 billion and not the current estimate of €120 million, as most newspapers would have us believe. So in all we're looking at the considerable sum of €1.7 billion that has been filched (by Socialists) one way or another since the ERE fund was set up in the year 2000. This makes the Barcenas and other scandals involving the PP look like child's play.

T

hen we had the re-housing fiasco in which Socialist regional premier Susana Diaz broke with coalition partner, the Communist-dominated United Left one day, only to give back what she'd taken away (the housing portfolio) the next, after the IU threatened to break with her. That would have led to early elections which will not solve Susana's problems because the

outcome will probably be another Socialist-IU coalition, unless the PP can win an outright majority next time around. So she'll have to continue diluting the IU's radical policies like the one on evictions take re-possesed houses and flats from the banks and give them willynilly to the poor rent-free for three years. Or paying the electricity and water bills for the most needy, distributing unexploited land owned by the Junta (some 4,800 hectares) among land workers, taxing the wealthy until their pips squeak, or building 5,139kms of bike lines that will connect every major city in Andalusia, which will encourage people to leave their cars at home, according to the IU.

T

he only good thing is that the IU will never get anything like a working majority in regional and national elections. I think Diaz should bring forward the next regional election - not due for another two years - and hold them just after the May 25th European election, when the IU's shenanigans will still be fresh in everybody's mind. Diaz insists she has no intention of doing so but I can't see this coalition lasting much longer.

A

nd if the economy is in better shape in November 2015, I think a lot of Socialists will vote for their party again, instead of punishing it by voting for the IU as they did in the last election. I know political observers tend to sneer at the average voter, in the belief that they can be duped by sweet-taking politicians but I think a poll in one of today's national newspapers shows the Spanish are a damn sight more savvy about politics than generally believed. When El Mundo asked its readers if all the political parties receive donations in black money for their election campaigns 91 per cent of them said yes. The average politician may live on another planet but the average man and woman in the street have their feet firmly on the ground of planet Earth.

An art caper

Writes for the English language version of

H

e allegedly made millions by duping clients into thinking that they were buying original masterpieces. Among the paintings sold were purported works by Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning and Robert Motherwell. In all, Spaniard José Carlos Bergantiños Díaz and his Mexican-born girlfriend Glafira Rosales had been fooling the art world for decades through sales at various New York galleries. Last week, after many months on the run, Díaz was arrested at a hotel in Seville along with his brother Jesús. The surprise sting at the NH Viapol Hotel surprised him so much that authorities had to take him to the hospital before taking him into custody after he suffered an anxiety attack. His girlfriend, who pleaded guilty in the scheme last September, is cooperating with US authorities.

A

t a court hearing on Monday, the Díaz brothers announced that they will fight any extradition to the United States where a grand jury in New York handed down an indictment just hours later. This international case has all the ingredients of a Hollywood caper: a jilted girlfriend, insurance investigators on the suspects’ tails, and obsessed wealthy clients going at lengths to bring the suspected art forgers to justice.

N

ow it is up to the Spanish courts to decide whether it will extradite the Galician-born brothers to face the music in New York where José Carlos and Glafira, with the help of a painter in Queens who is now thought to have fled to his native China, carried out one of the biggest forgery schemes that has shaken the entire art world. The FBI had been trailing Díaz for many months and, with the cooperation of Spanish police, finally tracked him down in Seville.

T

he case was apparently blown open when details were outlined in a lawsuit filed in a Manhattan court on 2007 by an art collector and a dealer against Christie’s auction house for selling a Basquiat painting whose authenticity had been under question. The investigation dragged in New York’s oldest art gallery, Knoedler & Company, which sold some of the paintings to well-known collectors and businessmen in the United States, including one for $17 million. The gallery has since closed.

A

ccording to reports in the New York media, which have zestfully been following the case, the Chinese painter used a heat and cooling process to age some of the paintings. Then Díaz forged signatures of the 20th century modernists. The fakes were discovered when experts found that some paint used by the Chinese artist was not available during Pollack’s period. In court papers, Díaz has denied all charges, including that he sold forgeries, and said that he was working on behalf of his brother, who was an art dealer in their native Spain. Prosecutors believe that he and Glafira convinced collectors to spend some $80 million on the suspected forgeries. FBI agents traced at least $33 million to bank accounts in Spain.

G

lafira, a former Long Island art dealer, has now reportedly turned on her boyfriend and helped authorities track him down. Facing a 99-year statutory sentence for fraud, conspiracy, tax evasion and a host of other charges, the 57-yearold has been cooperating with authorities in an effort to get a reduced sentence recommendation from federal prosecutors.

T

he extradition process for the Díaz brothers is expected to take up to a year. They will now have to face a formal hearing at the High Court to determine whether there is legal ground to send them to the United States to face charges that are also considered crimes in Spain. From there, appeals will no doubt follow, which could drag the case on for months. Then there is the question of the art collectors and whether they will be able to get back any of their money. It is not known at this time if the United States has asked Spanish authorities to freeze the brothers’ bank accounts. The High Court decided to let José Carlos and Jesús go free on their own recognizance but they were ordered to hand over their passports and remain within Spanish jurisdiction. But if José Carlos was able to dupe dozens of art experts for years with the stroke of his pen, what guarantees are there to prevent him from fooling an immigration agent at the border. Only time will tell.

Understanding New Passports group The Costa del Sol Action Group explains the second kind of “Financial Passports”:

Last week the Costa del Sol Action Group told you about the first type of passport. This week we give you the rest of the article.

2. MiFID Passport (registered with CNMV in Spain)

Some, but not many, larger financial advisers ‘passport’ advice into Spain under the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID)

This means the FSA will passport the UK adviser and notify the Spanish Stockmarket Regulator the Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (CNMV). The firm will be listed both on the FSA and the CNMV website as doing this. a. MiFID: Permitted Advice and Arranging Activities: Stockmarket based products such as Shares, Other stocks such as Government and Corporate Bonds, Collective Investments such as SICAVs, UCITS, Open Architecture Personalised Portfolio Investment Bonds.

b. MiFID: Offices and

Advisers Living In Spain: If your adviser is ‘passport’ authorised under MiFID they are allowed to have a branch of office in Spain. Tax, Wills and Estate Advice

Many advisers may also offer tax or estate and trust planning advice. These activities are not regulated in the same way as pensions and investments. Care should be taken whether you are talking to a UK adviser or a Spanish one to ensure they are competent in tax or estate planning as you have little recompense other than through the UK or Spanish legal systems if things go wrong. How to Check a Passport

This does not mean that all advisers operating in Spain have a valid financial advice ‘passport’. For UK advisers, you can check this on http://www.fsa.gov.uk/regi ster/home.do and do a firm name or individual search and then check their 'passport' records. You may even need to widen the search, just in case a different trading name is used to that of the authorised business or indeed the individual may go by their middle name.

Businessman Jack Threlfall, who has lived in Spain for many years, brings luxury artificial grass to the Costa, transforming parched and scorched, tired and weary lawns into the lush and “green green grass of home” and converting dreary looking terraces into terrace gardens with a lawn.

Jack, having worked with artificial grass for some years, witnessed a meteoric rise in demand for artificial grass in the UK first hand and with his contacts here on the Costas the logical thing for him to do was to bring the quintessential British Lawn to Spain and ARTILAWN was born. He pointed out: “as the demand increased year after year the quality improved likewise, I have been working closely with the manufacturers and together we have created the nearest thing to natural grass, hence our motto …..it looks like grass and feels like grass”. He immediately recognised the viability not only as a business but more importantly the benefits of choosing Arti-Lawn as against conventional grass or for that matter choosing any other artificial grass suppliers! He identified the numerous applications of his own luxury and truly superior artificial grass for the Spanish market. Seeing is believing! Pets, Vets & Guests

with David The Dogman This week on our show we had the lovely Sarah Fisher who is an expert horse and canine behaviourist also specialising in Tellington TTouch specialist. What is Touch and how can it help your cat, dog or horse? TTouch - the Tellington TTouch® - is a method based on circular movements of the fingers and hands all over the body. The intent of the TTouch is to activate the function of the cells and awaken cellular intelligence - a little like"turning on the electric lights of the body." Tellington TTouch will help your dog learn to relax and gain more confidence. This class is by appointment only. Dennis Fehling is available for private and group trainings. The TTouch is done on the entire body, and each circular TTouch is complete within itself. Therefore it is not necessary to understand anatomy to be successful in speeding up the healing of injuries or ailments, or changing undesirable habits or behaviour. There are several people on the Costa Del Sol that practice this method, further details speak to your vet. My other guest was Mickey Gavin who works with problem horses and also gives riding lessons he uses a 'pirelli type' natural horsemanship approach. I have seen him working on my daughter’s very wild pony who only wanted to bite and kick. After 3 visits ‘Dolly’ became a pet and now the most loveable creature one can find. Mickey hardly speaks when he is working, he is very direct in his approach to animals and people, he very much reminds me of myself! Anna says:- Harley and I This week we have been to the go kart track by the Hippodromo. It is so important to expose your puppy to all sorts of places and sounds. I thought it would be a big deal for Harley with the loud sounds from the cars and all the people running around but no.. He loved the people and to his delight everyone wanted to say hello to everyone. When he was done with the greeting he relaxed on his blanket and chewed away at his bone. It is always a good thing to bring a blanket and some toys and bones to keep your puppy busy when you sit down. This gives them a safe place to lie down and it keeps them occupied. It is also important that your puppy learns that it is ok for people to touch them even if they have a bone. Celia Says:- SIZE OF LITTER TRAY

When getting a new kitten, remember to buy a litter tray big enough for a fully grown adult cat. If you are buying a big breed, such as a Maine coon or a Norwegian Forest Cat, you will need a really, really large one. The ideal litter tray is two and a half times the length of the cat (excluding its tail!). In open ground many cats like to turn round and look at the area they have used, and make sure it is fully covered. A litter tray big enough to allow this will keep your cat going back to the right place. FEEDING TOO MUCH Are you feeding your cat too much cat food? It only takes a few extra cat biscuits per day to make your cat start getting fat. Indoor cats who don’t have as much to do as cats that have cat flaps are particularly likely to put on weight. So read the instructions on the packet, or contact the manufacturers online, to make sure you are not feeding too much. Cats that weigh too much, like humans who weigh too much, are prone to diseases such as arthritis or even diabetes. Nazli says:- Want to be a vet? Volunteer or seek employment at a veterinary office to get the best idea of the career you are interested in, and what it is like to work with animals -- both sick and healthy. Practical experience is a requirement prior to admission to most veterinary schools. Other career exploring opportunities would be volunteering at a local animal shelter or animal control unit to learn more about how your community handles "unwanted" animals. Express your career interests to staff members. Ask about their career likes, dislikes, necessary training, and personal satisfaction involving their career choice. This is a great way to learn and to expand horizons of what types of jobs are available. If you feel uncomfortable about performing a task or answering a client question, ask for help! Better to ask for help than risk injury to an animal or misinformation to a client. Regarding schooling and education, research the various veterinary and technical schools available. Becoming familiar with the admission requirements, typical educational costs, each school's academic strengths and weaknesses will assist in making the right choice for your learning style and career goals.

Your Weekly Entertainment Guide OUT & ABOUT Elegant food and surroundings at Santa Fé Read your favourite news, plus a whole lot more in

Santa Fé, the popular restaurant in Coin has reopened with a fresh new look and feel.

The theme is cool silver greys and whites with a beautiful grey tartan wallpaper on some of the walls and in the same upholstery as the comfortable seating with wooden tables and the cutlery is of good quality.

We were seated indoors near the fire on the rather cool night we were there but there is plenty of seating outdoors for when it gets hot, on the patio and around the pool and BBQ areas.

Menus were brought and in a few moments a delicious amuse bouche of a smoked haddock, leek and potato soup (Colcannon to those in the know) was served with a crispy chicken skin crisp in an espresso cup with a tiny silver spoon which was very elegant. This was followed by home-made flat bread of olives and herbs with a tomato and garlic dip. And these were before we’d ordered!

of fish in it!) served with a wasabi mayonaise. My husband had the asparagus with a crispy poached hen’s egg served with jamon serrano and a home-made holandaise sauce.

Other starters include calamari with black rice and a roast pepper sauce at €6 and twice baked Idiazabel cheese souffle with a walnut, pear and endive salad among a whole list of others.

Starters are from just €5 and I had a trio of salmon (smoked, salad and fish cake - with real fish in it for a change and not just potato with a whiff

For the main, I had pork done 4 ways. There was pork fillet wrapped in serrano ham, wonderfully cooked melt-in-the-mouth

pork cheek, a perfectly cooked belly pork without a hint of nasty hard fat and black pudding. All served with a chive mash and apple puré. At €17 it seemed a little on the dear side for us up here in the sticks but I can assure you was worth every penny. Geoff went for the sirloin steak, cooked rare to prefection, with onion rings in beer batter, roasted vine tomato and vegetables with threetimes-cooked chips which were served... no I’m not going to tell you, it’s a surprise! His main came in at €22 and was mouthwateringly delicious. The vegetarians amongst us are also not forgotten with a lentil and vegetable parcel, gratin dauphinoise, asparagus spears with a white wine cream sauce for just €14 and a lovely monkfish dish for fishetarians and those of us that love a good fish dish. Then there’s “Posh fish n’ chips” at €15 and a chicken dish also for €15 but all with a twist on what you’d expect to see on your plate when it arrives.

Desserts were €7 each and there was plenty to choose from (if you still have any room left as portions are definitely generous). Crême brulée, Santa Fé Eton Mess, Lemon Tiramisu, Sticky toffee pudding, chocolate fondant and a selection of cheeses were all exceptionally good. The wine, a very decent Ribero del Duero Cuarto

Creciente was smooth, full bodied with a peppery aftertaste served at perfect temperature. We understand that they will be sourcing wines from a vinyard owned by a friend of theirs from further north in Spain but unfortunately, on the night we were there, the delivery people had let them down. Ah, well, what we had was delicious and we’ll just have to return to sample the new wines when they arrive.

The service was attentive but not overbearing and staff were willing to answer any questions.

Santa Fé is set in an old finca on the outskirts of Coin on the old road to Marbella going out of the town on the right hand side.

New owners Ian and Bernadette plus his daughter Amy now run Santa Fé ably assisted by 19-year-old Jack who was brought up here in Spain but hails from Darlington, North Yorkshire. The family used to own The Sun Inn, Edinburgh which won Gastro Pub Of The year Award for the last 4 years. For more information call Finca Santa Fé on 618 446 833

de Los Pueblos The festival this year runs every day from next Wednesday 30th April - the day before the May 1st public holiday through to Sunday the 4th May. It is a spectacular International event that displays the costumes, folklore and music of the numerous nationalities now resident in the Fuengirola surrounding area.

and

There are far too many to mention in detail, but usually over 30 nationalities are represented. The daily event from 2.00 pm to around 4.00 in the morning began twenty years ago in 1994 and is considered by many to be the best of the Fuengirola Ferias.

It's almost impossible to miss the specially built fairground halfway between Los Boliches and Fuengirola on Avenida Jesus Santos Rein. The South American stalls are there with massive smoking meat grills (Parrillas) laden with beef and sausage, Spanish

Moraga style Sardines and Paellas, Scandinavian open fire roasted Salmon, Indian curries, Polish sausage, Hawaiian cocktails, German beers, Cuban Mojitos and sticky middle eastern sweet dishes with mint tea. The Fuengirola Feria de Los Pueblos is short of nothing when it comes to food, drink, entertainment and fun, it really is excellent with something for everyone.

Inside the festival halls or club houses (Casetas) is yet another colourful world of crafts and traditional goods and even more food, entertainment and dance. You'll find everything from Mexican Mariachi Bands to Egyptian belly dancers,

Argentinian Tango to Norwegian folk. The streets are full, it is estimated by some that in some years there could have been close to if not over one million visitors.

The evenings have a real party atmosphere through to the early hours. Look out for the very popular Irish Caseta which hosts some of the best of local rock and Celtic bands on the coast but expect equally enthusiastic and quality entertainment from the other countries too. Black Swan director Aronofsky has long wanted to bring this biblical tale to the big screen and finally Paramount stumped up the $125 million dollars to make it.

It’s the original disaster movie plot, and Aronofsky has pitched it as both a biblical epic and a postdystopian drama. It’s an ancient story told with enough high gloss CGI and big battles, with a theme of mankind as destroyer, busily wrecking the future of Earth through greed and carelessness, to excite and resonate with a modern audience. The ‘Creator’ (God doesn’t get a mention) decides that mankind needs punishing, and chooses the perfect tool to help mete out that punishment in the shape of Noah (Crowe). Relationships are to the fore, it is like a gateway has opened and has given you an opportunity to set things straight once and for all. Any thing that has run its course and needs to be laid to rest will make itself suddenly known to you; beware of some emotional volatility at this time. Expect the unexpected as someone may propose radical changes.

Patience is unlikely to be your strong point this week and anything that takes longer than you expect will frustrate you no end. You could be seeking deeper answers to the things that have happened to you in this lifetime and question the mundane more than usual. Time spent with family and in the home will be just what the doctor ordered - allowing you space to recharge.

If someone in your world has been in ultra control mode then this is a period in time when they will now get their comeuppance. You may have the chance to say some choice words that you have been wanting to get off your chest for a while. Exposing another will help diffuse the hold they have had over you and karmacly they will have to answer for their actions.

Life is a balancing act and any area of life that you feel is not in equilibrium will reveal itself; listen to your intuition as you are likely to be spot on in your assessments of situations. You will be as a tiger defending and going after what you want and need to happen in your life. Goals and ideals will come to the fore thus reminding you of your higher and more spiritual needs.

VIRGO

It can feel as though your future depends very much on another person’s choices and their actions, however, a good deed done in the past is likely to pay off right now and you could be surprised at the support you receive. Any tension or stress that you are experiencing will serve as fuel to support your quest for change and improvements in your life.

Those in authority will be noticing the work that you have done or the effort that you have put into something lately. This will stand you in good stead for the future even if you do not see immediate results now. This week you will come to know, without question, whom you can count on when the going gets tough, the truth of someone’s heart is revealed.

LIBRA

Expect to meet your match as the polarity in the heavens align, this is a poignant time when there is a grand cross causing tension and revealing hidden depths. You can only sugarcoat circumstances for so long and then something has to give, how intense you feel will be linked with how much you have held under lock and key, repressing or resisting lately. Your drive, initiative and leadership skills are coming to the fore and this will provoke a way of unearthing a lost wisdom from deep within. Your mind is well able to delve and unlock secrets that have remained hidden – perhaps you will find a logical way to explain something that appears complicated and you can put in a simple way for others to understand.

Relationships are changing their momentum and although times have been rough in the past there is a new breeze blowing. This will mean that a certain friendship / relationship may suddenly end or it may move to a different level of understanding between you both, one that will endure the highs and lows. Whatever truth is revealed it will be for better in the long run.

Relocation or discussions about relocating could be on the cards, this could be a result of some sudden changes in your career or the need to move to a larger place. Things may change a few times over the next few weeks and it will be important not to overreact to people as your stress levels will be higher than usual. These are wild times but the changes can also bring a lot of excitement and fun. You have the power to turn things around with the flip of a coin and it is your mind that is usually your enemy if you think the worst of a scenario. There is something that you could be waiting for, a result or answer to a question that is vital before you can plan the next phase of your life. It could feel that things are on hold until this occurs. Keep positive.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

Flowerpot bread

Making homemade bread is a chance for children to get really involved in the kitchen, just what you need for rainy days, and baking it in flowerpots just adds to the charm.

Ingredients:

500g granary, strong, wholemeal or white bread flour • 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast • 1 tsp salt • 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the flowerpots • 1 tbsp clear honey • a little milk or oil, for brushing Plus any of these toppings • 1 tbsp pumpkin, sunflower, sesame or poppy seed • 4 tbsp grated cheddar or crumbled feta cheese

(Makes 5)

1 tbsp chopped rosemary, thyme, oregano, chives or basil • 1 tbsp chopped olive or sundried tomatoes • ½ tsp chilli flakes

Directions 1. Tip the flour, yeast and salt into a large bowl. Pour in 300ml warm water, the olive oil and honey. Mix with a wooden spoon until the mixture clumps together, then tip out onto a work surface. Use your hands to stretch and knead the dough for about 10 mins, or until it’s smooth and springy. Add a little extra flour if the dough feels too sticky. 2. Brush the flowerpots with oil and line the sides with baking parchment. Divide the dough into 5 pieces and shape into smooth balls. I was just wondering where we get the expression "raining cats and dogs" I suppose google would have the answer but the question is more related to how Spanish expresses the notion of the heavy rain that delighted gardeners and dismayed sun worshipers over the Easter week-end. Well, la lluvia is the rain and it comes from las nubes de lluvia - rain clouds - which have finally made their appearance after an amazingly dry winter.

If it is pouring rain we can say Está lloviendo a mares. This literally means raining the sea, which makes a lot more sense than raining cats and dogs. If you come in from the pouring rain you will most likely be soaked to the skin and say Estoy empapado. I'm drenched. When the rain eases off to a drizzle you can say Está chispeando. A chispa is a spark and I suppose here the drizzle is often accompanied by the sun so we have the image of sparks falling.

For the rain you need un paraguas - umbrella just as for the sun you need un parasol. And perhaps un impermeable - a rain coat. Mojado means wet and if you want to say it never rains but it pours you can say está lloviendo sobre mojado. It is raining on what is already wet. Well. we certainly needed the rain and at the end of it all we hope to see un arco iris - a rainbow. Hasta la próxima - until next time

Things are intense there is no denying that right now and it could feel as though some have reached a boiling point, creating irritability from many that are in your immediate circle. The escape route for you is to seek refuge with those of a like mind or to be in a place that takes your mind to a higher level than of those that are around you. Make sure you have your sanctuary ready as it will enable you to deal objectively with any emotional heaviness.

Dear Sue,

I have been looking everywhere for a salon that does the cathodermie facial, but can't find one. Is this available in Spain? Ruth, Torremolinos Dear Ruth,

Yes that facial is available in Spain but is known as the hydradermie

facial. You will find it in any Guinot appointed salon. (Including mine).

I believe it is now also called that in the U.K. Dear Sue,

After the winter my skin is all scaly on my legs, I do put cream on, but it's not helping.

Dear Carl-Ann,

What you need to do us a good body exfoliation. This can be done in a salon or at home in the shower. Just as face of the skin needs to get rid of dead cells so does the body.

If you just keep putting cream on it won't penetrate properly, so do a good peel and then apply cream and or oil. If using both apply oil

Skin cancer rates 'surge since 1970s'

The incidence of the most serious skin cancer in Great Britain is now five times higher than it was in the 1970s, according to Cancer Research UK statistics which show more than 13,000 people develop malignant melanoma each year, compared with around 1,800 in the mid1970s.

It said the rise is partly due to rising popularity, from the late 60s, of package holidays to Europe, and that sunbed use has also fuelled the increase. Malignant

melanoma is now the fifth most common cancer, with more than 2,000 dying from it each year. Those with the highest risk of the disease include people with pale skin, lots of moles or freckles, a history of sunburn or a family history of the disease. Experts advise spending time in the shade, covering up and using at least an SPF15 sunscreen.

A spokesman for Cancer Research UK said: "However, we know overexposure to UV rays from the sun or sunbeds is

He added: "It's essential to take care not to burn - sunburn is a clear sign that the DNA in your skin cells has been damaged and, over time, this can lead to skin cancer."

first then the cream. Dear Sue,

What can I do to beat hungover skin? Liz, Benalmadena Dear Liz,

Morning-after faces can be frightening, so be smart and before you go out drink three or four glasses of

water. Water can neutralize the worst effects of drinking so alternate water with alcohol throughout the night. Remove all makeup before you go to bed to help prevent the skin looking dull. It can help if you sleep with an extra pillow to help drain fluids away from your eye area, apply an eye gel at night and in the morning to combat puffiness.

"Guinot's" 'Anti fatigue gel' is great for helping with this. Enjoying exercise may be genetic According to a new genetics study of lab rats, the motivation to exercise or not may be at least partly inherited. For years, scientists have wondered why so few people regularly exercise when they know that they should.

However, some recent experiment suggest that genetics might also play a role. To find out which genes might be involved, researchers at the University of Missouri created their own avid- or anti-exercising animals. To do this, they inter-bred normal rats that had voluntarily run on

SUNRISE

wheels in the lab. The male rats that had run the most were bred with the female rats that also had run the most; those that had run the least were likewise mated.

This scheme continued through many generations, until the scientists had two distinct groups of rats, some of which would willingly spend hours on running wheels, while the others would skitter on them only briefly, if at all. When the researchers closely examined the brains of the two types of rats, they found that by young adulthood the animals bred to run had

more mature neurons in the nucleus accumbus than did the non-runners, even if neither group had actually done much running. What these findings mean for people is “impossible to know at this point,” the researchers said. Rat brains are not human brains but even so, they said their findings would seem to suggest “that humans may have genes for motivation to exercise and other genes for motivation to sit on the couch,” and over generations, one set of these genes could begin to predominate within a family.

Savile still reeking havoc beyond the grave Newspapers run ads telling Jimmy Savile abuse victims how to claim

… and now there´s a limit on how much his victims can claim in compensation for his actions

Victims of paedophile pop presenter Jimmy Savile can claim no more than £60,000 for sexual abuse meted out by the BBC star.

Around 140 victims can each claim a share of a £3m compensation pot from the BBC, the NHS and disgraced Savile's own estate.

Victims who were targeted by the sexual predator and are entitled to a pay-out must apply for the cash by the end of June, or miss out.

An advert appeared in various tabloid and broadsheet newspapers yesterday (22 April).

The plan was hailed by Mr Justice Sales, who drew it up with interested parties. He called it a "sensible and pragmatic" solution for a "complex situation".

Solicitors representing Savile's alleged victims cautioned that the scheme would not guarantee payouts – only provides a framework within

which claims can be scrutinised.

Savile abused vulnerable victims across three decades, up to and including the 1980s. The serial offender may have abused yet more vulnerable youngsters at children's homes and institutions, including children at a school for the blind, it emerged in March. The government ordered fresh investigations into claims uncovered by the

Metropolitan concerning institutions England.

Nearly 150 people were sexually abused by the entertainer who was allowed to continue for years, and who ultimately escaped arrest and trial. Savile was exposed after he died in 2011. Only a few months later, he was revealed to be one of the UK's most prolific sexual offenders.

Unusual form of art A picture may paint a thousand words but, it seems, a thousand typos can also conjure up some pretty impressive works of art in their own right. And if you thought using text to create images, such as emotions, was a modern phenomenon, then think again.

Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, the famous boxer who served 19 years in prison before his exoneration after being wrongfully convicted of murder, died at home Sunday at age 76.

Carter’s friend and former co-defendant John Artis confirmed the news to the Associated Press. Carter died in his sleep after a battle with prostate cancer.

Carter was twice convicted of shooting three people in a Paterson, N.J., bar in 1966, two years after losing boxing’s middleweight championship.

Prosecutorial misconduct involving racial bias and withheld evidence led both verdicts to be overturned in 1985.

Carter’s quest to clear his name attracted international attention. Amnesty International called him a “prisoner of conscience,” and the case inspired Bob Dylan to write the protest song “Hurricane.”

The story of Carter’s life was turned into a Hollywood film, The Hurricane, in 1999, starring Denzel Washington.

These designs are from a new book which chronicles how creative types have been using, well typewriters, to painstakingly conjure up art for over a century. The earliest known example was by Flora FF Stacey, who found fame in 1898 by using a typewriter to create an incredibly detailed image of a butterfly. The trend soon caught on with artists, poets and designers all experimenting with new ways of expressing themselves by using the same technology. The art form reached its peak in the 1920´s, but waned in popularity as newer forms of technology, such as personal computers and laptops, took the place of

typewriters as the 20th century came to a close. But, as Barrie Tullett – the author of Typewriter Art: A Modern Anthology notes, artists were inspired to use keyboards to set out more than just a

‘The definition of typewriter art can really only ever be a personal one,’ he says.

With the recent banking crisis in Europe I now understand one of the reasons behind our(not their) economic woes, unemployment and increased cost of living.

I have lived in Benalmadena for 28 years, for the last 13 years in the same property. I own the apartment and it is in my name. All my utility bills have been paid without problem but I have now had a "warning letter" from Endesa that my last electricity bill had not been paid. I checked the account balance - there were sufficient funds. I looked at my statement and indeed no payment had been made to Endesa. Not their fault. I spoke to the bank. The bill

had the wrong account number quoted, the bank told me.

Last year the bank was "taken over" by another, BMN, and the last 2 or 3 bills had been paid, evidently with this new number so, why not now? Now the bank has refused payment without the new number. I was given this number some months ago. I was politely told to advise Endesa of the change and I have done as I was told.

Two questions. The bank changed the account details so why did they not tell my suppliers of this. It is their change of administration , not mine and I was very happy with my old number! Secondly. How many more

Your readers may like to know that there have been reports in the Spanish press recently about the way criminals are defrauding home-owners and stealing their properties. I wonder how many people might find, through no fault of their own, an account embargoed, and we all know how much fun that can be in Spain!

name of an offshore company, they can ask a notary to assign the ownership of the property to a new ‘owner’, thereby selling it an unwary third party. Spanish law does not oblige notaries to check on the authenticity of a power of attorney, so if the forgery is good enough, as of course it can be today with digital technology, it will be accepted. And once the new owner takes possession he can never

have the property taken away because the purchase was carried out in good faith, which takes priority over any claim by a previous owner, however much evidence can be provided demonstrating the existence of a fraud. Property owners who have been defrauded in this way have tried to get the courts to restore their properties to them, but have never been successful because of the above regulations. Property that is empty for long periods such as holiday homes is vulnerable as this makes the sale to a third party easier, and the locks can be changed once the property has been registered. It is very easy to carry out this fraud and until Spanish law changes every home-owner, whether Spanish or foreign, can be a victim.

Pets of the week Oscar seeks a home

Oscar is a playful and friendly young dog who walks well on a lead and would love a family of his own. He was abandoned and very hungry, and knew which side his bread was buttered when he made his way with unerring instinct to the SOS Sunday market stall at La Trocha in Coin. He gets on well with the other dogs at the refuge and loves a cuddle from the volunteers. He weighs 17 kilos and is about two years old. You can see more pictures of Oscar, our other dogs and puppies on our website and Facebook. Visit sos-animals.org to see more about our dogs seeking loving homes, and click on the Facebook icon to check out what’s happening at the refuge. Contact 605 227 155 for more information.

Can you help Ramon?

Ramon is 3-years-old and he has been in the P.A.D. shelter for more than a year. He was rescued from an apartment along with 4 other dogs in very bad conditions. When he arrived, he was not social, nor had he been trained, and was very nervous and lacking in confidence . In his time at PAD he has been transformed. Now he is obedient, gentle, loves people, and cannot wait for his daily walk with one of the volunteers. He wants to be loved and will repay his new owner with love in abundance. If you would like a pet to share some time with, he will be a great companion and friend. He is an obvious choice. For more information or to give Ramon his new, loving home, contact Lisa on 658 351 642 and make this lovely dog a very happy boy.

Hamilton wins in China Lewis Hamilton says he is in a particularly good place at the moment, both personally and professionally, after cruising to his third straight F1 win in China.

The former World Champion who has been criticised in the past for allowing external matters to get in the way of his racing, has signalled his intent to focus entirely on racing since his switch to Mercedes at the start of the 2013 season. It's an objective that has come fully into force in 2014, with Hamilton benefitting from Mercedes' evident edge on pace compared with its rivals to establish himself as a title favourite. With Hamilton now just four points behind Nico Rosberg in the overall standings, the 25time race winner admits he is in a particularly 'happy place' at the moment. “It's a combination of

lots of things,” he said when asked whether he is the happiest he has been in F1. “It's where I am in my life, family, girlfriend, where I live… having the right people in place with management and being in the right team. This year I am able to arrive and drive with no other worries.”

Reflecting on the race itself, Hamilton feels his impressive form so far this year is as much to do with

the 'comfort' he gets from the people around him in the Mercedes team.

“We got a great start, pulled away and controlled it from there. The job the team are doing and the guys around me… I am so much more comfortable with the people I am working with this year. I am able to really extract the most out of my engineers, so I feel like we did a good job.” Webber. “To have Porsche on the podium is a massive step for us because the amount effort that has gone in has just been incredible. I have seen new teams – even the last team I was with in F1 – start off fresh, so the effort Porsche have put in is astronomical.

Hamilton finished 18.6secs clear of Rosberg, Fernando Alonso, winner of last year's race in China, finished third to give Ferrari their first podium of the season and the first under new boss Marco Mattiacci, who looked on from the pitwall. "Being here on the podium is some kind of surprise for us, it's a nice surprise finally," the double world champion said.

Supermoto kicks off in Alicante The first round of the Spanish supermoto championship takes place at the Chicharra Karting circuit in Villena, Alicante this Sunday 27th April. With both of the FordDunn brothers (picured) from Murcia competing in the open and Master championship classes the action is sure to be fast and exciting. The Chicharra race circuit features a variety of both high and low speed corners before the riders fire themselves off one of the faster curves into the off road section with high speed jumps and turns before rejoining the circuit to complete the lap. The racing is always close in the tight and technical circuit. Mat and Anthony FordDunn have been busy already this season with both brothers taking a double win each, in their respective classes at the first round of the Catalan championship held back in March. But their next

biggest challenge came over the Easter weekend when the brothers travelled to France for the first round of the world championships where they take on the world’s best supermoto racers. The learning curve will be steep but what better way to prepare for this coming weekends Spanish championship round at Villena. As usual the Supermotoland race team with their sponsors Advance Moves International Removals and Stratton Motorsports, will be in the race paddock to welcome anyone wishing to attend the Villena race meeting, with racing starting at 10.00 hrs on the Sunday, and the circuit is easy to locate on the CV-81 road from Villena to Yecla. More information and directions can be found at www.chicharrakarts.es and www.supermotoland.com

“We were a bit overawed and a bit intimidated by pulling it all together but it got us a result today. Timo's stints were phenomenal and Brendon was the great backbone in the middle. I just had to drive around at the end.”

Autosalon Coin LEO’S Mark Webber’s Simply repairs & servicing to AUTOS and models at podium debut all makes unbeatable prices Mark Webber could not contain his joy as he marked his new sportscar career with a fine run to the podium in the Silverstone 6 Hours, the Australian insisting it cannot be underestimated the effort Porsche has put in to get on terms with its rivals.

The Australian anchored the No.20 Porsche 919 Hybrid car in difficult weather conditions after Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley had worked their way up to third position in earlier stints, the trio enjoying a fault-free run on a day that saw Audi suffer two crashes and the

sister Porsche bow out with mechanical issues.

Hailing the effort of the Porsche team to bring its project together and prove competitive from the off, Webber was delighted to be stood on the podium in his first race with the team. “It is a great day for sportscar racing,” said

Malaga cruise to safety Málaga got off to a quick start and were rewarded for their pressure with an early goal. In just the 6th minute, Samuel unlocked the visitors defence and Santa Cruz flicked the ball beyond Asenjo to finish off the move. Villarreal were having trouble trying to contain the continued pressure, particularly Mario, who was being given a torrid time by Amrabat. Málaga continued to threaten, and Santa Cruz almost nabbed a second goal in the 23rd minute, but his shot just went wide of the post. Amrabat too came close, firing into the side netting with his finish just 2 minutes later. Past the half-hour mark, it was still all Málaga as Antunes and Duda had chances. Villarreal couldn't string any flowing passes together and as the half concluded, the home side were causing them great problems defensively, especially down the flanks. At the start of the second half Duda tried a blockbuster from miles away, almost catching out Asenjo in the 47th minute.

Then Amrabat fired just wide in the 49th minute. The pressure kept coming from Málaga and in the 53rd minute, they got their just rewards and extended their lead. Amrabat once more opening up the Villarreal defence, got to the byline and sent over a perfect cross for Darder to score.

Still unable to cause Málaga any serious problems, in the 65th minute the final Villarreal change came, as Jonathan Pereira replaced Perbet in attack. The home side were always looking comfortable though and in the 69th minute, Schuster made their first change of the night, as Duda left the pitch to an ovation from the crowd, replaced by Portillo. Amrabat had been a thorn in the side of Villarreal all night, but in the 73rd minute, he let his mouth get the better of him. Unhappy and feeling he should have had a freekick, the winger gestured to the referee he needed glasses. After collecting a yellow for that, he immediately collected a second and the red from

Álvarez Izquierdo, for continuing his protests and insults. As the game settled back down again, even with ten men, there were no signs of Málaga suffering any problems from Villarreal and in the 81st minute, Schuster made his second move from the bench, as Eliseu replaced Samuel. The home side really should have had the third following a set-piece in the 85th minute, but Angeleri made a hash of his finish with just the keeper to beat, as the ball came into the area. A moment later and the best chance of the night came for Villarreal to pull one back, as Óliver Torres had a great opportunity with a header, but sent it the wrong side of the post. Málaga made their third and final change in the 88th minute, as Santa Cruz left the pitch to be replaced in attack by Rescaldani. The game was well over as a contest by then though, as the home side comfortably saw out the remaining moments and stoppage time, claiming three points that effectively secures their status in the Primera.

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips On a learning curve I received an email from Chris whom tells me he is an on line player, he prefers Holdem NL cash at 25/50c limit and has been playing for about 18 months. His question is when he hits a big flop he always finds it difficult to take down a big pot as his opponents always seem to fold, He also cites an example of a week ago when he hit his first Royal Flush against an aggressive player after raising with Ac/Qc pre flop in an early position, the villain was on the button calling and 3 betting a lot of raises from position. The flop came down Jc/10/c/Kc which I checked allowing the villain to bet ½ the pot which I duly smoothed called, the turn came 7d which I checked and so did the villain, the river showed a 3s so led out with an ½ pot size bet for value but the other player folded. In my opinion Chris you extracted the most you were going to get paid from this player, he bet the flop because it was a dangerous board for a none club hand and no

doubt shut down after your call putting you on a better hand. This may be a clue to why you are not taking down bigger pots when you hit the nuts, you state you are a tight player with good hand selection but are you playing too predictable?

Most players at 25/50c level have a good understanding of the game so watch your betting and calling patterns, either play every hand exactly the same or mix it up, remember if your going to mix it up be very random playing every hand different if you raised with AK 3xbb last time only raise by 2xbb this time. If you do raise and get some action do not play the flop the same way, sometimes fire a continuation bet and sometimes check even if you hit the flop (if you hit a good flop on a strong drawing board I recommend always betting out here for value and defence).

You have only been playing a short time Chris so to be holding your own at 25/50c blinds in my opinion you are doing well, the standard of play here by the regulars is good and they will pick up on line tells where as at the micro levels this is less of an issue. At 25/50c we do need to mix things up by playing few random hands rather than just primium hands, as these players will call and 3 bet super tight players as they know if they fire back to fold, at the micro levels we need to play tight aggressive ABC poker as a lot of players at these levels do not like the fold button.... which is good for a winning player. Kieran goes close in European Moyes is Championships sacked

Manchester United manager David Moyes has been sacked, only 10 months after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson. His dismissal was announced shortly after 0830 BST, following a meeting with executive vicechairman Ed Woodward at the club's training ground. Moyes, 50, was chosen by Ferguson to succeed him when he retired after 26 years in charge last summer.

United said player-coach Ryan Giggs will take charge "until a permanent appointment can be made". His first match as interim boss will be the home game against Norwich on Saturday.

It is understood also that coaches Steve Round and Jimmy Lumsden have also left their posts, but goalkeeping coach Chris Woods and first-team coach Phil Neville will remain with the club for the rest of the season.

Kieran Taylor, the young 19 year old Taekwondo black belt from Arroyo made the very long journey to Minsk, to take part in The European Taekwondo Championships and had to travel via Madrid and Prague. Kieran's first fight was against the Ukraine but whilst going through his usual warming up routine he had a severe nosebleed. He has no idea why this should have happened but he sought medical attention at The Minsk Arena where the first aid team put cotton wool up each nostril to stop the flow. Unfortunately when you use a professional mouthguard, your nose is the main source of air flow and with it being blocked up, he had great trouble getting his breathing correct and made it very hard to fight correctly. The first two rounds were a

draw and Kieran was quietly confident this final round would bring a medal. With blood still flowing, the referee stopped the contest for two minutes to get this problem sorted but it was not enough and the contest was awarded to the Ukraine. Kieran was very disappointed but next year in Italy he will bring home a medal. His next appearance will be when he defends his Benalmadena Open title in June at the Polideportivo in Arroyo.

Kuchar blasts his way to Boston marathon victory at Hilton Head honours bomb Luke Donald was pipped for the RBC Heritage title as Matt Kuchar's final-round 64 earned victory in South Carolina. Donald scored a 69 to trail Kuchar, 35, by one shot and beat third-placed Ben Martin and John Huh by one. After he had bogeyed the 17th, Kuchar blasted out from a greenside bunker for a birdie at the last for a seven-under-par final round and 11 under par overall. Donald was unable to gain the shot he needed from his final three holes to force a play-off with American Kuchar. After beginning the final round with a two-shot lead, Donald hit a wayward tee shot at the sixth before three-putting for a double bogey. Kuchar, who started the final round four adrift, posted seven birdies in his first 10 holes and followed

with six pars before his spectacular chip-in at the last. "I wasn't too disappointed to end up in that front greenside bunker on 18," he said. "I knew it was a pretty easy up and down. I said 'I'm about due to make one of these' and it was so cool to see that thing disappear at the end."

"I hit a lot of solid shots,a lot to build off and I'm excited about some of the changes I've been making." Donald said afterwards.

Thousands of marathon runners took to the streets of Boston, as the city honoured three killed and more than 260 injured in a bomb attack last year. After the resumption, Westwood added two more birdies to complete a round of 68 and an 18-under-par total.
