Thousands of people paid their last respects on Monday to former Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez, the man who dismantled the Franco regime, together with King Juan Carlos. Suárez died of Alzheimerrelated conditions in a Madrid clinic at 3 pm on Sunday. His body was taken to Parliament's Salon de Pasos Perdidos (Hall of the Lost Steps) just after 10 am on Monday where it lay in state until 10 am on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, former PMs Felipe Gonzalez, Jose Maria Aznar and Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero

and other political leaders stood outside the parliament building as soldiers brought in Suárez's coffin to a slow and solemn drum beat.

King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia and Princess Elena arrived shortly afterwards to pay their last respects to the country's first democratically elected prime minister after Franco's death. As flags flew at half-mast all over the country for three days

of mourning, the King laid a Royal Order of Carlos III gold chain, the country's highest civilian award, on a cushion at the foot of the coffin before expressing his condolences to Suárez's family. The hall was opened to the public at noon and thousands of people paid their last respects well into the night. Many had arrived as early as 5 am to do so.

I have appeared on the telly twice in the last week. Not normally one for being out in the front of things I had agreed to do a radio interview only to be told it was, in fact, to be televised. I met my counterparts from both SUR in English, Liz Parry, and Suzan Davenport from the Costa del Sol News who are both intelligent, funny and interesting ladies that were a pleasure to meet on the first programme. The second was only on Monday and I was talking to Karen at Mijas 340 Television about current news items and about our campaign to find a local hero. I will be appearing from now on on the first Thursday every month. In the meantime, My local heroes are of course the two people who have helped me most while my leg was in plaster – Dangerous Ellis who has been getting up at 5am to help me do the early delivery run, and Jackie Rice who has taken on the later part of the run. Both have come forward and volunteered with no prompting and I can’t begin to tell them how much they have been appreciated in my hour of need. The plaster cast is now off my leg and I have an elastic support bandage. I still have to use crutches to walk though and must book a load of physiotherapy for my ankle. Am I looking forward to it? Not a chance... I think it’s going to hurt like **+%$&!.

People are asking about my Cambridge 800 consulting sessions for us all to get in shape for the summer – yes, men too! Those that have already signed up have lost weight and are happily sticking with the plan and I have lost weight myself on it. Doesn’t it just feel great when someone says: “Ooh, you’re looking thinner!” Yesss!! To join in with my Cambridge 800 regime call me on 663 917 081. I will be holding group sessions or, if you’re more comfortable with it, one-to-one sessions at various times and in various places, so let’s all get a better look for summer.

Born into the rural middle class in Cebreros, a small town in the province of Ávila, Suárez inherited his parents' fervent Catholicism, took a law degree at the University of Salamanca, and got a job in the town hall of Ávila in 1955. He went on to become the civil governor of Segovia which was when he first met Prince Juan Carlos. Two months before Franco died, he was made vice-secretary of the Falangist Movimiento. Meanwhile he had married Amparo Illana Elortegui in the summer of 1961. In 1965, Suárez was made programme director of the state broadcaster TVE and two years later was "elected" as

He also managed to get the members of the Cortes (Parliament) – all of them appointed by Franco – to vote for his Political Reform Bill which literally ended their political careers. In 1982, Suárez left the UCD to form a new party, the Centro Democrático y Social (CDS). The UCD was annihilated in the October elections, gaining only 11 seats; the CDS won two. He left politics, concentrating on his law practice and caring for his wife and his daughter, Mariam, who both died of cancer: Amparo in 2001 and Mariam in 2004.

Suárez's appointment as prime minister in July 1976 drew criticism from both the left and right. But by the time he won the first free elections which were held in June 1977, Suárez had legalised all the political parties banned by Franco, including the communists, as well as the trade unions.

“Dignity March” ends in violence

The “Dignity March” organised to protest against government spending cuts in Madrid on Saturday ended in violence as groups of protestors fought with police officers and vandalised local businesses, causing “serious damage” to street furniture, stores, cafés and banks. The violence left 101 injured, among them 69 officers. Of the 24 people were arrested, including three minors, most were released on Monday. One person is being held indefinitely accused of attempted murder.

According to Cristina Cifuentes, who is the government’s delegate to the Madrid regional government, the violent protesters “laid waste to everything in their path”. Cifuentes said that such violence “had never been seen before at a demonstration,” adding that the government was not to blame, saying the violence was “nearly impossible” to predict. However, she admitted the police had warned of “the presence of far-left violent radical elements” at the march, who “could cause this type of incident”.

On Sunday, police unions criticised the chiefs in charge of policing the event. More than a hundred officers staged an impromptu protest outside the headquarters of the UIP riot police unit. The SUP police union criticised the “mistakes made by the leadership and the decision making,” arguing that officers were not given the appropriate resources, which meant “they had to take unnecessary risks, the consequences of which were evident from the injuries suffered, some of which were very serious”. A SUP spokesman said a group of 15 officers was surrounded in streets near Colón Square, and were threatened by hundreds of violent protesters carrying stones and metal bars. “This mistake in

coordination should mean the resignation of those responsible for allowing 15 police officers to end up isolated, without support, impeding other units who were asking to be allowed to help from intervening," he said, adding that “members of the UIP have never felt so abandoned by the police chiefs and politicians.”

Union chiefs and officers are considering organising protests themselves if there are

no resignations.

Protesters had travelled from all corners of Spain, many of them making the journey on foot, in order to express their anger. They called their protest the march of dignity because they said that the government of Mariano Rajoy is stripping Spaniards of just that. The demonstration took place peacefully, until the anti-system and anarchist groups started to run amok.

New VAT hike ruled out Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro announced after last Friday's Cabinet meeting that the government’s major overhaul of the tax system would not include a rise in “indirect taxes on any products”.

It was the first time the minister has rejected outright the idea of raising the reduced VAT rate of 10 per cent on certain products up to the regular rate of 21 per cent, as a committee of experts recently recommended. They argued that it will be necessary to raise VAT if the government lowers income tax or social security contributions, without reducing the state’s revenues.

It would also help to create jobs, the experts said. Economy Minister Luis de Guindos is also a proponent of this strategy. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union have also repeatedly asked the Spanish government to raise these reduced taxes, but Montoro insisted that “the tax reform scenario will not include a VAT hike. We have already raised it; we as a society have already made that effort, and we did it at a dramatic time for our economy.”

VAT was last raised in September 2012.

Weather makes Spain New perks on hightop wine producer speed AVE trains Read your favourite news, plus a whole lot more in

A wet spring and sunny summer made Spain the world's top wine producer in 2013, according to the latest figures from the Agriculture ministry.

In a statement, it said wine production surged 41 per cent last year, with vineyards producing 50m hectolitres – enough to fill 6.7billion bottles of wine. Competitors France and Italy reported harvests of 42m and 47m hectolitres respectively.

More than half of last year's harvest came from Castilla-La Mancha, where La Mancha wines are produced. La Mancha wine growers' representative Angel Ortega attributed the bumper year to unusual weather conditions: "It's not often that you see all the right climate

The potential was always there."

The government has welcomed the news – the wine sector is now another industry it can count on to boost the country's economic recovery.

Can I get divorced in Spain if married abroad? This is the first question that a person More Spaniards move abroad living in Spain may ask when wishing to get a divorce from a marriage in another country. the number of Spaniards living abroad grew 6.6 per cent last In Spanish law, regulation 2201/2003 governing enforcements in matters relating to divorce, states that a person seeking divorce may do so in the place that suits their interests. Therefore, if you wish to get a divorce in Spain the demand should be presented at the courts in one of the following locations:

1. The common habitual residence of the spouses, when one of said spouses is still resident.

2. The habitual residence of the defendant spouse. 3. In the case of a joint application the demand should be presented to the court situated in the location of the habitual residence of the applicants, where they have been residing for a minimum of one year before filing for the divorce.

4. The habitual residence of one spouse. 5.

The place of the

common nationality both spouses.

of

Therefore, it is possible to file for a divorce in Spain if it is the country of habitual residence of both or either of the spouses. There are two ways of carrying out a divorce: By MUTUAL AGREEMENT or through a CONTESTED DIVORCE

Firstly, in the case of DIVORCE BY MUTUAL AGREEMENT, whereby both parties agree to divorce amicably, a regulatory divorce agreement must be established in which the consequences of the divorce must be stipulated i.e. division of assets, maintenance payments, custody / visiting rights for children, etc. To start the process of an uncontested divorce the spouses would need to submit the application for a divorce, accompanied by the Marriage Certificate, a divorce agreement document, and if applicable, together with certified copies of the spouse’s children’s birth

certificates.

Secondly, in the case of CONTESTED DIVORCE, whereby one spouse requests a divorce without the agreement of the other party, or when the spouses cannot agree on the terms of the divorce and when no divorce agreement document has been prepared then a judge would be required to determine the conditions of the divorce agreement. The judge would establish the division of assets, the amounts of maintenance payments, and in cases where children are involved, each spouse’s obligations and rights regarding them. This would result in a much longer, more complicated and more expensive procedure. In all situations where a person is contemplating divorce it is advisable from the beginning to contact a solicitor who would be able to assist, help and guide the claimant through the whole process ensuring that their interests are protected and that they

achieve an appropriate settlement.

year, according to National Statistics institute (iNe) figures. records of nationals who registered at Spanish consulates show 126,800 more people living outside the country’s borders. this number includes foreign-born individuals who acquired Spanish citizenship and foreign-born children of Spanish parents. the total registered number of Spaniards living abroad now stands at 2,058,048, but the figure could be higher, as some people choose not to register abroad to avoid losing privileges back home, such as a designated physician at their local public health centre. europe is one of the destinations of choice for emigrating Spaniards, who predominantly move to Britain, France, Germany and Switzerland. the Spanish community in europe grew 5.29 per cent last year but the increase in the americas is notably higher, reaching 7.21 percent because of the return of Latin americans who came to Spain and became nationalized citizens before the crisis forced them to return to their native countries. madrid

Mayor wants to limit protests

City mayor ana Botella, local businesses and the regional government are urging the interior ministry to limit the number of protests in the Spanish capital's best known and busiest square – La Puerta del Sol. thanks to the economic crisis and swingeing austerity measures, the number of protests in the square has rocketed. Florencio delgado, president of the Federation of Businesses of Central madrid, said: "every time a march goes past shopkeepers see their sales drop dramatically. it's not nice to be out on the street shopping when there's a protest going on." delgado said he understood the attraction of protesting in the city centre, but urged groups to "think about the bigger picture". Statistics gathered by the association showed that the announcement of a new protest on average triggers the cancellation of up to 25 per cent of restaurant bookings in the area. in 2012, there were 396 protests in the square, and 391 last year. the central government's representative to madrid, Cristina Cifuentes, has said she understands "the desperation" of the businesses, but the government is legally unable to dictate where protests can be held. However, mayor Botella argues that the Puerta del Sol square – like much of madrid's downtown – is designated a protected area. "Commercial activity should be protected," she said. "Protests should be held in places where they don't hurt economic activity."

National Front gains trigger alarm

The far-right National Front (FN) party has alarmed the French political establishment by making significant gains in local elections.

President Francois Hollande's ruling Socialists lost ground overall, as turnout slumped to a record low of 61%. PM Jean-Marc Ayrault has urged voters to back any candidate best placed to beat the FN in the second round.

The Socialists have now announced that they will join forces with the Greens and the Communist Party

in an effort to block FN advances in the second round. The FN, an antiEU party demanding tough curbs on immigration, won a clear majority in HeninBeaumont, a northern former coal-mining town and did well in the south too, taking the lead in Avignon, Perpignan, Beziers and Frejus. It also came in second in Marseille.

The FN vote of just over five percent was proportionately high, as its candidates ran in just 600 out of some 36,000 constituencies. Last weekend's vote is seen as an expression of growing exasperation with the traditional parties of right and left. Marine Le Pen, FN leader since 2011, hailed the results, saying her party

had "arrived as a major independent force – a political force at both national and local level".

It was the first major electoral test for President Hollande, who is deeply unpopular after nearly two years in power. Results are still being counted and the second round of voting will take place next weekend.

Landslide death toll rises Authorities in the US state of Washington have found six more bodies after Saturday's huge landslide, bringing the number known to have been killed to 14, police said on Monday, but as many as 176 people remain unaccounted for after the 177ft wall of mud hit near the town

of Oso, north of Seattle.

More than 30 homes were destroyed and nearly half the inhabitants are missing – a recent census put its population at 380. Search crews have worked overnight, using helicopters and laser imaging, but officials admit they have little

hope of finding survivors.

President Barack Obama has declared an emergency in Washington state and ordered federal authorities to coordinate the disaster relief effort. After surveying the area from the air,

Washington Governor Jay Inslee said it was "devastation beyond imagination". He said the slide "basically cut a mountain in two" and deposited it on the town below.

Nothing in the path of the slide was still standing.

Minister defends Twitter ban

turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek has defended his government's ban on twitter, accusing the website of failing to comply with court orders. he said no company should see itself as above the law. the government banned the website last Friday, after users shared information about allegations of corruption against high-level officials, but analysts say web users have found many ways of circumventing the ban, which was widely criticised.

twitter has so far made no public comment on the ban, but the company on Friday posted a message in both english and turkish telling users how to send tweets via text messages.

there are estimated to be about 10 million twitter users in turkey. the minister said it now looked as if twitter was working with the turkish authorities to get the ban lifted. a senior turkish government official told reporters that talks with twitter on ending the ban "were going positively". in 2010, the country lifted its ban on youtube – two years after it blocked access to the website because of videos deemed insulting to the country's founder, Mustafa Kemal ataturk.

North Korea

Missile launches stepped up

North Korea test fired 46 short-range rockets over the weekend as a way of protesting against joint military drills between the US and South Korea. the government claimed the tests were routine, selfdefence exercises, but it has bitterly criticised the annual war drills by Washington and Seoul, labelling them invasion preparations. the isolated state often makes a show of force at the same time as the drills but this year there have been an unusually high number of rockets launched. observers said some 70 missiles have been fired so far this month. Both South Korea and the US have criticised the North's missile tests. earlier this month Seoul said that one such experiment took place in the same vicinity as a Chinese passenger plane. also in early March the US asked the UN Security Council to take "appropriate action" against North Korea's missile launches. Under UN resolutions, North Korea is required to abandon its ballistic missiles programmes.

Brazil

Federal troops to quell violence

the government has said it will send federal troops to rio de Janeiro to help deal with a spate of violent attacks targeting the city's police. the decision came after the governor of rio de Janeiro state, Sergio Cabral, asked President Dilma rousseff for government support ahead of the football World Cup in June. last week, three police bases in the city's favelas, or shanty towns, were attacked by suspected gangs. Four police officers have been killed since February in similar attacks. rio police have installed more than 30 bases in favelas in the past five years to drive out drug gangs. Murders have declined and the number of shootouts has dropped, but residents have often accused the police of using heavy-handed tactics. the attacks on police in Brazil's second largest city have heightened concerns about law and order ahead of the World Cup, which begins on 12th June. Seven World Cup matches, including the final, will be played in rio.

Female MPs blast polygamy law

Female MPs stormed out of a late-night parliamentary session in a row over the legalisation of polygamy. the law is intended to bring civil law, where a man is only allowed one wife, into line with customary law, where some cultures allow multiple partners. But male MPs voted to amend the new marriage bill to allow men to take as many wives as they like without consulting existing spouses. traditionally, first wives are supposed to give prior approval. MP Samuel Chepkong'a, who proposed the amendment, said that when a woman got married under customary law, she understood that the marriage was open to polygamy, so no consultation was necessary. about 30 of Kenya's 69 female MPs were in the 349-member chamber for the debate but were outnumbered by their male counterparts. the women walked out in disgust over the matter. the marriage bill now passes to the president to sign before it becomes law.

It said high winds and rain meant planes could not fly safely. Australia's Defence Minister David Johnston said search efforts were unlikely to start again for "at least another 24 hours".

He described the search as a "massive logistical exercise" in an "extremely remote" part of the world. Mark Binskin, vice-chief of the Australian Defence Force, said: "We're not searching for a needle in a haystack. We're still trying to define where the haystack is."

Meanwhile, Malaysian PM Najib Razak said in a

news conference late on Monday it had to be concluded "with deep sadness and regret" that according to new satellite data "flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean". Speaking to media on Tuesday, Malaysia Airlines CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said: "We do not know why, we do not know how this terrible tragedy happened." But he added: "The announcement made last night and shared with families is the reality that we must now accept." In Beijing around 200 relatives of passengers clashed with police outside

Malaysia's embassy, as China asked to see the data on which Malaysia's conclusion was based.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared on 8th March as it flew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. It was carrying a total of 239 people, including 153 Chinese nationals. A multinational search effort has focused on seas some 1,500 miles to the southwest of the Australian city of Perth. There have been several sightings of debris, but none have yet been confirmed as linked to the plane.

100s condemned to death in Egypt

President Jose Mujica announced on Monday that his country will take five prisoners from the Guantanamo Bay detention centre in Cuba. Mr Mujica said he had agreed to a request from President Barack Obama to take some of the detainees remaining at the controversial US military

Chancellor revolutionises Sir Philip to take pension rules in Britain on supermarkets There is a real problem with the perception of what is right and what is wrong in Britain and at the heart of it is the failure of people in many professions to act in the best interests of their customers.

In the financial sector alone many individuals at the top of their professions appear to have been able to act with impunity, often being rewarded for their transgressions with large bonuses and excellent salary packages that do not reflect performance. It is against this background that Chancellor George Osborne has acted in the Budget to radically reform pension arrangements so that people will have more control over their pension pots and can better elect to avoid the captive annuity

trap, which has served pensioners so badly of late.

As with banking, the reputation of the pensions sector is now badly tarnished and recent research suggests that less than half of all people approaching retirement trust their pension providers to act in their best interests. That is an unhealthy situation and the Chancellor deserves credit for taking action. Under new rules people will be able to cash in part or all of their pensions when they approach retirement and will no longer feel forced to buy an annuity to give them a regular income for life. Annuity rates have been poor in recent years.

George Osborne’s budget has been well received and recent polls put the Conservative Party and Labour Party neck and neck as the General Election moves closer. The surge in support for the Conservative Party appears to be at the expense of the antiEurope United Kingdom Independence Party and the Liberal Democrats.

Sir Philip Green, the celebrated retailer, has announced that his British Home Stores department stores are to start selling food and he plans to undercut Britain’s biggest food retailer, Tesco, and also Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, by as much as 10 per cent. He told the Sunday Times newspaper that big discounts would apply to branded goods. Food sales are to commence at Staines and Warrington in

the near future. It is a return to the old days because the stores have sold food in the past, although this time it will be with a policy of aggressive discounting. Already Aldi and Lidl have squeezed the margins of the big four, which are planning to slash prices in response. Sir Philip has vast experience across retailing and owns high street clothes shops, including Topshop.

UK concerns over EU membership

Recent research by Tory peer Lord Ashcroft suggests that voters in Britain do not believe Prime Minister David Cameron will be able to claw back powers from the European Union. Mr Cameron has pledged an in-out referendum by 2017 if the Conservatives win the General Election. The vote would follow negotiations aimed at bringing reforms. Over half of those polled thought other EU member states would block reform and two thirds thought they obtained greater

benefits from membership than the UK. There is also a huge question-mark over democratic accountability with one in ten people unable to name their own Member of the European Parliament and concerns over the inability to get accounts properly signed off. Lord Ashcroft told the Sun on Sunday that the Prime Minister had already shown he can get a better deal for Britain and the majority of people want to stay in the European Union.

Family doctors in plea for funding

The Royal College of General Practitioners in Britain has called on the Government to devote a larger slice of the national health budget to doctors in general practice because of the pressure on the service. The organisation says a third of patients are now unable to get a doctor’s appointment for themselves or a family member in the same week.

Dr Maureen Baker said cuts affecting local doctors’ surgeries was a false economy because general practice was shoring up the rest of the national health service. BRISTOL

A spokesman for the South African government has said he was confident that Dewani would receive a fair trial in South Africa.

New cuts at Royal Mail are “ruthless” theNews Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Following the announcement by Royal Mail in the UK of their intention to cut 1,300 jobs, mainly in their managerial section, union Unite has described the plans as “ruthless” and suggested the possibility of industrial action by the 7,000 managers at the firm they represent.

Royal Mail which was privatised last year said they aim to save £50 million a year by making the cuts but added that no delivery staff would be affected by the move. They also propose to create 300 “enhanced” roles and say they will begin talks with the Communication Workers Union and Unite soon.

Moya Greene, Royal Mail's chief executive, said: "We are continuously improving our efficiency, whilst maintaining our high quality of service. We need to do so in order to effectively compete in the letters and parcels markets. This is the best way to ensure the continued delivery of the Universal Service and the good quality jobs we provide for our people."

The union's officer for Royal Mail, Brian Scott, added: "First the Government sells-off Royal Mail on the cheap and now the newly privatised service is ruthlessly sacrificing jobs. We do not believe that it’s a coincidence that this

announcement has been made just before the company prepares to announce its first full set of accounts since privatisation. It’s more proof that Royal Mail’s primary reason for existing is now about making profits rather than serving the nation. For all that Royal Mail managers have been through they do not deserve to be treated in this way. Unite is demanding a commitment to no compulsory redundancies on fair terms and an effective method for redeployment within the restructured organisation. If Royal Mail refuse we will have no alternative than to consider a ballot for industrial action."

ADVERTISING FEATURE

My name is Steve Woods and I am a solicitor based in Chester, UK, specialising in claims for asbestos related diseases. Over the last three or four years I have dealt with an increasing number of cases for expats particularly in Spain who have unfortunately suffered from breathlessness caused by exposure to asbestos. We all know that as we get older we can develop breathing problems. These problems can have a variety of causes but after investigations particularly x-rays or scans problems with shortness of breath can be attributed to exposure to asbestos. Investigations can show whether lung damage has been caused by smoking or asbestos. Asbestosis, diffuse pleural thickening and mesothelioma (a cancer that attacks the

protective linings of the lungs) are very serious illnesses caused by exposure to asbestos. What a lot of people do not appreciate is that it is not only workmen who have used asbestos themselves who develop these diseases but also other men working in their vicinity or wives and other family members who come into contact with their work clothes. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with an asbestos related condition or has breathing problems and has come

into contact with asbestos in the UK please get in touch. You may be entitled to claim damages or benefits in the UK and I can help on a no win no fee basis.

I am happy to talk to anyone free of charge about their individual situation to see if a claim for damages is possible. I often visit clients in Spain.

However, the process dragged on for 11 years because of bureaucratic inefficiency until the couple finally gave up. They sued the powers-that- be and were granted a compensation of €2.7 million for moral damages and lawyers’ fees, which was later reduced to €70,000. They are currently appealing because one of the officials involved in the process has just been found guilty of altering their original adoption application.

A Fuengirola man managed to renegotiate his mortgage after sitting outside Cajasur for four months. Salvador Merino told reporters the amount he was being overcharged on his mortgage was not

Toll harms tourism

Since December 2011, when the toll on road connecting Ayamonte bridge to Portugal was introduced, the number of visitors has dropped by as much as 50 per cent on both sides of the border, according the Huelva Tourism Office. Before the toll was introduced, some 300,000 tourists who arrived at Faro airport came to Andalucia.

The Huelva and Ayamonte Chambers of Commerce are currently meeting with their counterparts on the Portuguese side of the border with the objective of uniting efforts to convince the authorities of the need to eliminate the toll.

The Portuguese estimate that the toll has caused economic damage amounting to â‚Ź30 million a year, while the Spanish say economic activity here has dropped by 25 per cent.

Unrepeatable

I

sincerely hope all of Spain's politicians watched TVE's extensive and exhaustive coverage of Adolfo Suárez's death at 3.03 pm on Sunday to his final laying to rest in Avila cathedral on Tuesday afternoon. TVE reporters spent a lot of time asking people what they thought of Suárez and the message for today's politicians couldn't be clearer. As one woman said: “They could learn a lot from him.” Others said he had always put the good of the country above party politics. In all fairness it must be pointed out that Suárez didn't belong to a political party before he was appointed prime minister by King Juan Carlos in July 1976. He had to create one to be able to run in the June 1977 election which he did by bringing together 15 different right-of-centre political groups under the umbrella Union Democratica del Centro (UDC, Democratic Union of the Centre).

B

ut it wasn't just his lack of blinkered ideology that endeared him to the people. As one viewer emailed to the TVE's 24h late night political chat show: "He was a disastrous PM – he fulfilled his promises, resigned when he felt he should and he was never involved in any personal or financial scandals so as Spanish PMs go, he was a disaster". And I thought the British had the copyright on sarcasm!

W

hat was really heartening was the number of young people in the long queue of people waiting to pay their last respects as he lay in state in the Salon de Pasos Perdidos (Hall of the Lost Steps) in Parliament. Two of them, who must have been born after Suárez left politics in 1991, said they had had to write a paper on him when they were students and had subsequently reached the conclusion that there was never and never would be anyone like him.

M

eanwhile, at the lying in state itself a rather subdued Felipe Gonzalez stood with his head bowed before the coffin. Could he have been regretting the way he savaged Suárez every day in Parliament when he was the opposition leader? It must have been easy for Gonzalez to forget his high-handed treatment of Suárez after the latter left politics in 1991 and during the last 11 years when Suárez – suffering from Alzheimer’s – was little more than a ghost. But it's been talked about a lot since Sunday and Gonzalez was conspicuously absent from the politicians who trooped to the clinic where Suárez lay dying to give his condolences to the family. As our American friends say – what goes

T

around, comes around.

hen we had the King being comforted by Suárez's son, also called Adolfo, instead of the other way round. Prince Felipe, who is apparently quite close to Adolfo Jr, put it in a nutshell – We have him to thank for everything.

I

was surprised when Cayo Lara, the card-carrying Communist leader of the United Left, had nothing but high praise for Suárez. Then I remembered that it was Suárez who legalised the Communist Party over Easter weekend in 1977. He chose that moment because most of the top military men who were dead set against it were out of town. He avoided a public discussion of the matter in parliament by decreeing the party's legalisation. It was just a little over two months before the first free general election and Suárez was determined to let the Communists take part. It was a fair move but it earned him many enemies in the armed forces.

S

o for three days we had both Left and Right united in their praise for the man who – hand-in-hand with King Juan Carlos – dismantled the Franco regime. Unfortunately, this rare unity will already have dissipated by the time you read this and they'll be at each other's throats against, putting party politics above the good of the people. However, I think "the people" have learned a lot about true patriotism in the past few days and I hope they learn use this knowledge wisely.

I

leave you with this, the saddest photo of them all, taken by Adolfo Jr when the king went to visit Suárez in 2008. Apparently, not recognising him, Suárez said – Have you come to ask for money as well. The King replied – No, I come as a friend – and took his once closest collaborator out for a walk round the garden.

I

f Adolfo Suárez will be remembered for leading the nation out of a dark period, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will go down in history for having the worst government since the Transition; one that has violated civil rights and committed abuses against its citizens. It was too painfully ironic that while Suárez – the father of Spanish democracy, the man who held out his hand to the old enemies of the state – lay lingering on his death bed on Saturday night, police in downtown Madrid were violently breaking up groups of rowdy demonstrators, who had joined the “Dignity March” organised to protest spending cuts and demand better living conditions. Yes, some radical groups appeared to have infiltrated the peaceful demonstration and reportedly vandalised businesses and “everything in their path,” as one top government official put it. But the police were just as wrong with their reactionary behaviour by charging at the protestors – many of whom were bystanders witnessing the events – with clubs and tear gas. Even police union chiefs have called for internal investigations to determine who gave the charge orders. In the end, about 101 were injured, including 69 officers, and 22 people taken into custody; attempted murder charges were filed against one suspect.

T

The “Dignity March”

he scenes in Madrid’s Plaza Colón on Saturday night were frighteningly similar to the violent incidents that have been taking place throughout Venezuela over the past two months. Just as within the government of Nicolás Maduro, there are people inside Rajoy’s administration who have no tolerance for dissent. Obviously, top police officials had been expecting trouble at the “Dignity March,” or maybe they were hoping for the unrest to release their pent up frustrations at the constant calls for the Partido Popular (PP) to withdraw many of its policies.

R

ajoy’s PP government has embarked on a quiet behind-thescenes campaign, recruiting top

businessmen, newspaper publishers, international executives and whoever else they can find to help paint a bright picture of the reforms flourishing in Spain in order to win back investor confidence. But not everyone has jumped on the band wagon, and this is what has upset the PP leadership. The Socialists, unions, community leaders, activists and human rights groups know that the standards of living and quality of the lives of Spaniards have not improved, despite diagnoses being made by people such as Santander’s Emilio Botín who proclaimed last year in New York that money is again falling from the sky across Spain.

T

he late Adolfo Suárez made some bold moves in the late 1970s, at a time when tensions and uncertainty were abundant; Prime Minister Rajoy has conveniently forgotten them. Suárez – a master negotiator – extended his hand to the then outlawed opposition Socialists and Communists and initiated a dialogue. He tried unsuccessfully to also do so with ETA, but the Basque terrorists decided to continue on with their armed struggle.

O

n the social front, Suárez legalised divorce and the use of contraception – considered a scandal at the time – and ushered women away from needing their husband’s approval for every decision or activity by repealing Article 57 of the civil code (permiso marital). In contrast, Rajoy is adamant about curbing women’s rights to have an abortion, wanted – but didn’t muster enough support – to repeal the gay marriage law, and has placed restrictions on the courts to investigate human rights abuses in other countries through the far-reaching universal justice doctrine.

I

n a in memoriam column published on Monday in El País, Rajoy wrote about Suárez: “With his vital political examples, Prime Minister Suárez taught us all that, even in times of great difficulties, through our efforts of solidarity there is not one aspiration far from our reach. Nothing that he achieved would have been possible without his great political tools: his spirit to seek a consensus and dialogue, and his capacity to form pacts.”

T F

hese are true words coming from a prime minister who should put into practice what he preaches.

Do it now! UK expatriates – Time is running out to register to vote in the European elections With just seven weeks left to register to vote in the European elections, the Electoral Commission is urging UK expats to visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/ overseas to make sure they can have their say on Thursday 22nd May. The election watchdog’s overseas voter campaign launched in February, with adverts placed on Facebook, expat radio stations and on websites popular with UK expats. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), expat organisations and political parties have also joined the campaign to ensure the message is spread far and wide. “Many people have already downloaded their registration form, but we don’t want any eligible expats to miss out.” said Samantha Mills, Head of Campaigns at the Electoral Commission. “It only takes a few minutes but time is

It is also important for expatriates to think about how they are going to cast their vote. Ballot papers can be sent overseas but people must think about whether they have time to receive and return these papers by polling day. Those who think they might not have time may want to consider voting by proxy. This involves nominating a person they trust in the UK to vote on their behalf.

Pets, Vets & Guests

with David The Dogman

As we are following ‘Harley’ and his progress I thought it might be appropriate to write about ‘Inherited Behaviour’ because he will certainly have inherited behaviour. The behaviour of dogs like all animals, gets inherited via genetic predisposition and genetic memory. Genetic predisposition towards certain types of behaviour or attitudes in life are inherited at birth, much like the pre-programmed default factory setttings you may find on a computer or TV when you buy it new. What they govern are a dog’s prevailing temperament/personality and instinctive behaviour when faced with different situations or events – everything from how readily he will pursue prey to how confident, fearful or aggressive he will become in more testing situations and even how strongly he will emotionally attach to his owner making later separation issues more likely. Genetic memory is a different phenomenon. If an animal repeats a specific behaviour enough times, a ‘memory’ of this behaviour eventually get stored in its genes and cells, which is then passed passed down from one generation to the next. This is how birds know when to migrate and how to build nests, without any other bird showing them. Or how sheepdogs know how to stalk and round up sheep without any other dog showing them. It is purely down to the effects of inherited genetic predisposition and memory. The same phenomenon is behind all the different and far more genetically magnified working instincts found in different breeds of dog. In other words, they are born with certain inherited compulsion to behave in a specific way. Celia says: When getting a new kitten, remember to buy a litter tray big enough for a fully grown adult cat. If you are buying a big breed, such as a Maine coon or a Norwegian Forest Cat, you will need a really, really large one. The ideal litter tray is two and a half times the length of the cat (excluding its tail!). In open ground many cats like to turn round and look at the area they have used, and make sure it is fully covered. A litter tray big enough to

allow this will keep your cat going back to the right place.

Nazli says: Remember is is still the time of the year that the processionary caterpillars are full grown and fall out of the nests in the pine trees onto the ground. They follow each other in procession to find a nesting place in the soil. During that time our pets can come in contact with them, triggered by the movement or glittering in the sun. They are highly allergic creatures. Upon contact with the tongue, the tongue will swell to 3 times the size. Pets can suffer from an anaphylactic shock and die. Avoid these areas!

The adventures of a puppy

Anna says: It has been a busy week for little Harley, he is now accepted in the pack at home and is finding his place. We have been to the vet for a check-up and he fell asleep on the table. It is so important to take your puppy to the vet without anything “bad” happening, so that they are happy walking through the door and easy to handle. People have come and gone at the house all week to meet him and he loves it, he also spent a day with my parents alone and settled in straight away. There has also been time for a coffee with friends where a lot of people wanted to say hello. David, of course, checked that he could touch him while he had his bone – no problems there. We have started with our sits and downs and it is coming along nicely as is the recall. The sooner you start all this with your puppy the better but it is essential this is in a playful and fun way. A puppy also needs to be just a puppy and explore and learn about the world, and I intend to enjoy it for the short time it lasts.

Part One

We consider ourselves very fortunate to have lived for the last 17 years in the countryside below Mijas Village which we have come to love, together with so many of our friends. We recently took some of our friends to the Casa Museo. I recall that many many years ago the place was rather boring but we were pleasantly amazed how bright and interesting the old Mijas Town Hall now looked. The various rooms displayed many of the products and instruments used in the making of soap, bee keeping, grain grinding, harvesting and the variety of products made from local grasses; numerous machines showing how olives were pressed and grapes and raisins harvested and prepared. There is a fascinating section of works and relief pictures, with charming caricature figures. Take time to look at one piece in particular which is under glass No.26 called “El Mundo al Reves” (The World the Other Way Round). It really is an amusing charming piece. The only negative comment I can make about the museum is that nearly all the written explanatory material is

www.thenewsonline.es

Written by Roving Reporter Antonia Hagelen-MacIntosh

only in Spanish and calls out for translation into English at least. Speaking Spanish fluently I was able to translate but feel

that so many visitors will miss out. Heading to the lower area of the museum, across a beautifully kept patio, we were at this stage totally unaware of what we would find climbing the stairs to see a typical home of the 30’s. The first floor consisted of a very basic small kitchen area, a wood stove, two sturdy stone sinks (no plug holes we noticed); a sewing machine, strings of herbs they would have collected for their cooking – everything needed in a small area of the home. Upstairs we came across a small “salon” cum sitting area (above ) and to the right there was a small bedroom (above right). We were intrigued that the room to the left apparently only housed an old bulky wardrobe – nevertheless, the wardrobe door was

wide open and you could not help but notice that the back of the wardrobe was actually a glass partition – peering in it we discovered a very basic bedroom (below).

We read numerous framed newspaper clippings on the walls and little did we realise that therein lay a fascinating real life story concerning Manuel Cortés Quero.

I will tell you a little about Manuel Cortés Quero, “El Topo de Mijas” (the Meddler of Mijas) who was the last republican Mayor of Mijas holding the post between the 3rd of March and the 23rd of November 1936 in part two of this article in next week’s edition of Out and About.

Crispy Cod, Fuengirola the

Food Review & Advertising Feature

Crispy Cod on Fuengirola’s Paseo Maritimo is the longest established fish and chip shop on the coast. The current owners celebrated their 5th anniversary with the restaurant late last year, but overall the site has been a chippy for 14 years. We headed down to find out what has made the restaurant stand the test of time.

The location

Crispy Cod is on the paseo in Fuengirola, just a few blocks down by the Hotel Las Piramides in a great location, overlooking the beach and sea with a comfortable terrace.

The food

As well as the classic fish and chips there are options including 100% Irish beef burgers, Pukka

pies, battered sausages, fish cakes, pickled eggs and pineapple fritters. After much deliberation we went for cod and chips, and scampi, which were served up in enormous portions accompanied by proper chip shop chips and homemade tartar sauce. The cod was an impressive beast, with the whitest flesh (the owner Sean told us it’s so white because it’s line caught and so doesn’t get bashed around in the net), lovely crisp batter and a delicious, delicate taste. The scampi had an amazing breading on them which was super crispy and the meat was divine, served with a wedge of lemon and chips and it was heavenly. A surprise was the mushy peas, a house speciality made from scratch, which was very fresh with a vibrant green colour, really celebrating

the lovely taste of the pea. The texture was great, the combination of a sauce with some bite went very well with the fish. Overall it was very comforting to have such familiar food, but very carefully prepared and thought through. The combination of quality, attention to detail and good pricing in a great

location makes it hard to beat.

Use this to your own advantage by showing off your talents and abilities to those who matter and don’t get distracted by attention from those that wish to use you to get where they want to be.

New ideas and possibilities are coming out of the woodwork and it is up to you to bring them down to earth and see which ones are viable and those that could be lost in dreams. So keep your eyes and ears wide open and use your talents and abilities to help to steer you through to exciting eventualities. If you remain committed to your path and towards assisting others then the navigation will become second nature.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

Right dads, one for you to get involved with and get the kids to treat mum on Mother’s Day, with this easy no-cook cheesecake that's perfect for making with children.

Easy no-cook cheesecake Ingredients:

• • •

200g/7oz digestive biscuits 75g/2½ oz unsalted butter 400g/14oz full-fat cream cheese, at room temperature • 300g/10½ oz mascarpone, at room temperature • 200g/7oz icing sugar, sifted • 1 tsp vanilla extract

100g/3½oz malted milk balls (Maltesers)

Directions 1. Place the digestive biscuits into a sealable freezer bag. Push all the air out and seal the bag. Crush the biscuits with a rolling pin, being careful not to break any holes in the bag. 2. Melt the butter in a large saucepan. Tip the biscuit crumbs into the butter and mix well until thoroughly combined. Press the buttery crumbs into the bottom of a 23cm/9in springform or loose-bottomed tin. Chill in the refrigerator while you make the topping. 3. Combine the cream cheese and mascarpone in a large mixing bowl. Using an electric handheld mixer, blend the cheeses together until light and fluffy. Add the icing sugar a little at a time and blend to incorporate. Finally, mix in the vanilla. The mixture should be very light and fluffy.

4. Place the malted milk balls in the sealable freezer bag and close. Knock the malted milk balls with a rolling pin to just break them apart. Fold half of the crushed malted milk balls into the cream cheese mixture until thoroughly combined. 5. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the biscuit base and smooth the top with a palette knife or spatula. Cover with cling film and chill in the fridge for at least four hours. 6. When ready to serve, sprinkle the remaining crushed malted milk balls over the top of the cheesecake. Release the catch of the springform tin carefully, then slice and serve.

Key Words

SPANISH By Valerie Mitchell

Ayer fui a Málaga para ver una exposición en el museo Picasso, una exposición estupenda, pero aparcar el coche me costó un ojo de la cara.

When learning a language there is a lot of guess work involved. When someone is speaking to you the best idea is to try to pick up some key words and work out the general meaning from them. Read the paragraph again and see how much you can understand. Ayer - Yesterday Fui - I went. Costó - it cost

With these key words you should be able to get the gist of it.

Para in this case means in order to (more about the por versus para debate in two weeks)

You can probably guess that an exposición is an exhibition both from the sound of the word and from the fact that it was in the Picasso museum.

You like life to be organised in a way that you have a sense of control over the outcome. Remaining objective and surrendering to the moment has never been your strong point and the space between taking action and awaiting the result can seem an eternity. Finally, however, a key concern is going to feel resolved and communications within your relationships will start to blossom.

Aparcar means to park And un ojo de la cara literally means an eye from your face. In English we would say an arm and a leg.

It is essential in life and especially now to choose your battles as not all conflicts need to be fought. Strike a clear balance between where your output of energy makes a beneficial difference versus where your efforts are simply being diffused. The larger view starts to come into focus by the weekend and a practical way through shows itself.

This is just to show that from a few basic words it should be easy to get the meaning of what people are talking about. Obviously, the more you know, the better chance you have of understanding. As we say, poco a poco.

With Mercury resting in your sign is like giving you a guide to help walk you through the boggy marshes; this in turn elevates the potential for positive outcomes. Opposing viewpoints will come to the fore and you will be challenged to see if you are willing to accept different natures. Consider all the facts this week and you will find it easier to make quick decisions and discover an acceptable balance in your life.

So, did you work out that it translates more or less as follows? Yesterday I went to Malaga to see an exhibition in the Picasso museum, a marvellous exhibition but parking the car cost me an arm and a leg.

Dear Debs,

There is a problem when the hair is coloured so dark, as tint won’t lift tint, that’s why your lowlights haven't been showing.

You have two alternatives, one is to pre bleach your lowlights and then apply your desired colour over the top, but as it is starting to get warmer now you could find that this fades out quite quickly. The other alternative is to try a new colouring system that is out now which doesn't require pre bleaching but is designed to lift the hair.

The best way is to visit a salon and have them professionally done. Jack Bauer is on his way back to your screens

Actor Keifer Sutherland seems to be enjoying himself filming in the UK capital for the new series of 24

… but he admits that during filming over the years he’s suffered the odd broken bone and stitches.

Taking a break from filming in London for the news, ninth series of 24, actor Kiefer Sutherland told reporters of his nerves playing Jack Bauer again. After a four year break in the series Sutherland said that the decision to return was an easy one. He has been filming crash and fight scenes in recent months for 24: Live Another Day and said his reaction to being asked to play Bauer again was: "I said, 'Yeah, Michael, I'd absolutely like to do it', and then I spent the next

six months petrified, going, 'Oh my God, why would I open that up again?' because I was nervous," he said, adding: "I was very proud of everything that we had accomplished in eight years and there was something very kind of satisfying about saying, 'OK, it's done'. But I enjoyed it immensely and Howard had such a beautiful idea that obviously you would want to be a part of it but the fear of not having it fulfil all of its potential is massive, so it took me a few days of shooting for me to kind of realise that

Ant bugged by gang Poor old Ant is in the wars again. All was going well at The Old Station House restaurant in the fashionable area of Spencer Road, Chiswick, West London, where Ant McPartlin, 38, (the Ant part of Ant and Dec) was having a quiet dinner with his mother. However, peace was not to reign when a gang started making rude gestures at them through the window of the restaurant and taking photos of them on their mobiles.

It has been reported that little Ant went outside to ask them to stop, whereupon the TV presenter was set about by the unruly gang ending up being put into a headlock by one of them.

The Saturday Night Takeaway and I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here host's mother, Christine, was also pushed to the ground when she attempted to intervene. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said they were

called to the disturbance shortly after 8pm on Thursday, March 13th. He said: "No allegations were made and no one suffered any injuries."

McPartlin tweeted: "Thanks for all your lovely tweets. Me and my mam are absolutely fine. Not gonna let an idiot ruin things. All good and V happy!"

The Geordie presenter, who always appears on TV with sidekick Declan Donnelly, last month chopped off the tip of his thumb. He was attempting to work out how to use a vegetable-slicing gadget ahead of a Sunday dinner, it was reported.

I felt very comfortable and home."The actor said that shooting scenes in London had been “amazing” and that he had had “the nicest of times here” adding that, right now “everything’s perfect,” heaping praise on the set, crew and production design.

The first episode of 24 hit the small screen in November 2001 with its last outing being shown on May 24th 2010.

Each series of 24 episodes fixes on 24 hours in the life of Counter Terrorism Unit agent Jack Bauer

with scenes separated by the ticking of a digital clock.

At the conclusion of its eighth and final season, 24 became the longestrunning espionage -themed television drama ever, surpassing both Mission: Impossible and The Avengers.

Makers Fox announced there would be a new series in May of last year and have been beavering away ever since.

The new series is due to start on May 5th this year.

Over dinner with his family, Joanna bonds with his mother, who tells her about Will's childhood, and how he made it out of his tough neighbourhood to become a global superstar. I made the asparagus loaf and it was absolutely delicious. I put in some freshly ground sea salt and black pepper to give it lots of flavour. I then tried making it with rice flour as my friend is coming to stay in May and she is gluten intolerant. It was very good. The same delicious flavours

Planets galore!

I have just had a phone call purporting to be from Micro Assist a partnership company with Microsoft. Apparently they had noticed some unusual activity on my computer (how?) saying that it had downloaded malicious software. They asked me to sit in front of the computer (I went along thinking this was a scam) and then talked me through a procedure which ended up looking at the Event viewer, which

shows some red exclamation marks and yellow triangle errors. He then waffled on about software guarantees, but when I asked how they got my telephone number as it's not on my computer he put the phone down. Having looked this up on the web the next step was probably to let them connect to my computer remotely, to let them sort it out. Or to sell me something to fix what is not broken. The stuff in

the event viewer is normal. See this link for similar info.

How awful it was to hear about what they think happened to the Malaysian flight MH370. They have said that it went down into the southern Indian Ocean but, as far as I know, the only piece of debris sighted

is a huge bit of metal that, to me, sounds of the wrong dimensions to be from the plane. I’m sure they must have found something else to indicate that this is where the plane went down but, with all the other reports

that have been coming out of everywhere, I would be a little sceptical if I were a relative. Also, it seems to me that the way the relatives of those on the plane were manhandled at times, in full view of the TV cameras was particularly worrying. They were very clearly distraught at the lack of information they were getting, as they saw it, and on top of that to be physically marched from the conference room was beyond the pale. You would think that the authorities would have better knowledge of crowd control in this kind of situation and could have done it while showing much more compassion than they did. To be honest, I was surprised there wasn’t an out-andout riot amongst the people waiting in that room! We can only hope that more information is forthcoming and it is beyond a doubt what happened.

Opinion & Comment N 27

WEDNESDAY, March 26th 2014

enus reached greatest western elongation on Saturday 22nd March. This means that it is at its maximum distance to the west of the Sun and so now rises at around 5.20 am almost two hours before the Sun. You can’t mistake Venus as it shines so brightly in the east in the pre-dawn sky.

T

hrough a telescope Venus is displaying a half crescent phase with the righthand side being lit by the Sun. As it begins to move between the Sun and Earth it will grow bigger in size but less and less of it will be illuminated as seen from Earth. It will eventually pass between us and the Sun on October 25th this year. It will then reappear as an evening object toward the end of the year.

L

ook almost directly overhead at sunset and Jupiter is dominating the evening sky. We are gradually moving away from Jupiter in our orbit but it still commands attention. If you have binoculars or a small telescope try to have a look at Jupiter. It is so big that it makes a very pleasing sight; you should be able to make out the two biggest bands that cross Jupiter running parallel with the equator.

T

ry also to spot Jupiter’s four largest moons Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. They will appear as four tiny points of light near to the planets equatorial zone. The moons move very quickly around Jupiter so on one night you may see two moons on either side of the planet, if you look again the next night they will have moved position quite considerably. It is even possible to see the moons moving when they eclipse each other or move in front of or behind Jupiter. If you’re very lucky you may catch it when a moon is reappearing from behind Jupiter and you can see the gap widening as it moves away from the planet.

M

ars is rising in the east at around 21.30. We are gradually ‘catching up’ with Mars as we move around the Sun. Mars will reach opposition on 8th April when the Sun, Earth and Mars will be in a direct line with Earth in the middle. Mars will then rise at sunset; it will be at its highest in the sky at midnight and set at sunrise. This year is one of the better years to see Mars as it will be so high in the night sky; it is also at one of its closest points to us in its elliptical orbit. You may remember in 2003 when Mars was at its absolute closest point to the Earth and shone bright red for several months.

T

o find Mars, follow the curve of the ‘handle’ of the Plough down toward the bright star Arcturus then continue the line until you reach another bright star Spica – Mars is just to the left of Spica. I always find Mars a little disappointing when seen through a telescope; it is just too small really and never appears as much more than a red disc.

S

aturn on the other hand is always impressive and is coming into view around midnight. Saturn was the first thing I saw through a neighbour’s telescope when I was about nine years old and I think it must have been this view that sparked my interest in astronomy.

T

he famous rings are now almost fully ‘open’ giving us a spectacular view. Like the Earth, Saturn is also tilted over a little, and so at certain times during its 29½ year orbit around the Sun we occasionally see the rings ‘edge on’ to us as they were in 2009. And although the rings are huge in diameter stretching over 120,000km from the planet they are only about 20 metres in thickness. So when they are edge on to us they are virtually invisible from Earth. Now however the rings have begun to open up again and are visible even through binoculars.

W

ebsite. Due to popular demand I have restarted my website. On it you will find details of astronomical events for the month, star charts that can be printed out and taken outside as well as any other interesting snippets such as sightings of the International Space Station. Marquez wins opener Marc Marquez is hoping for further battles with Valentino Rossi in this year's MotoGP World Championship after the pair turned on the style in Qatar. Reigning champion Marquez emerged victorious after a pulsating final lap duel with Valentino Rossi to begin his title defence. He shrugged off the effects of a barely healed broken leg to take all 25 points on the Repsol Honda RC213V. It was the perfect beginning to the new season for the 21-yearold, who is already looking forward to the next round in Texas (one of his favourite tracks), where Marquez claimed his maiden premier class victory in 2013.

“ It was a great race for the fans but those 25 points are so important for me after losing pre-season with the injury,” he said. “It was an unusual weekend because there were many riders at the front that are (not usually there).

“My question mark (with the leg injury) was the second part of the race but the leg was not the biggest problem, it was my right arm; because I didn't have as much power in my right leg I was pushing more with my right arm and it was so tired after five or six laps,” he added.“The important thing was that I was fast in the beginning and then in the last ten laps I was able to attack a little bit more.”

completely out of sync. At the last corner it thought I was at the first

A number of riders came down, with Jorge Lorenzo, Stefan Bradl, Alvaro Bautista, Andrea Iannone and Bradley Smith all ending up in the gravel trap, a situation that Marquez admitted affected his confidence slightly, even if this was far from apparent on the race track. “I think I had a small advantage with the hard rear tyre; I chose the hard rear in the last moment and my technicians looked at me a little bit strange, but in the warm-up laps I felt great and we decided we would see what happened.”

Debuting with the Ducati Cal Crutchlow suffered a fault with the transponder on his Factory Desmosedici which meant the electronic settings were out of sync with his real location.

“It was a Magneti Marelli problem. The bike was

Beckham’s stadium plans Former England captain David Beckham has unveiled plans for a 25,000seat stadium on Miami's waterfront for his Major League Soccer team. The 38-year-old retired as a player last May and earlier this year announced plans to start a new MLS franchise in the American city.

"When people think of Miami, they immediately think about being near or on the water," said Beckham. The open-air stadium would sit next to the Miami Heat basketball team's arena.

Beckham's option to purchase a franchise is believed to have been part of the financial package he negotiated when he joined LA Galaxy in 2007. He played for the MLS club until 2012.

He flew to Miami to drum up support for the stadium, located in the Port of Miami, which would feature steep grandstands to give fans the feeling of being on top of the action.

corner, and every lap it changed throughout. So every time I crossed the start/finish it thought I was in a different place.

“The electronics were completely wrong after lap five until the end of the race, so I was quite surprised to still be competitive for the next six or seven laps. Crutchlow still managed to bring it home in sixth place and added “I think that we could have been competitive in the race, not with the lead battle, but we would have been a lot closer and ahead of (fourth place) Espargaro at least. “Riding around with a bike that thinks you're in sixth gear when you're actually in second isn't easy!

Bowls News: President’s Fours Thankfully, following the heavy rainfall earlier in the week, the semi-finals and final were held at Mijas Bowls Club and thanks must be extended to the club’s captain and competition secretary, and their members for the use of their facility.

Belplaya: Lennie Dineen, Mary Moynahan, Amber Dineen & John Pearce Benalmadena: Joe Stamper, John Sullivan, Jim Neilson & Juan Abeal La Posada: Allen Gateshill, Jeff Rowe, Janis Rowe & Mike Banfield Superbow: Michael Detheridge, Chris Down, Lynn Heseltine & Mary Detheridge

The Semi-Finalists

The current holders of the trophy were Joe Stamper’s Team: (the “Four J’s) representing Benalmadena.

A scorecard draw determined the semi-final opponents and it was the Superbowl quartet who had the dubious privilege of playing the holders. After a slow start, where they slipped to a 0-11 score after only four ends, Michael’s team rallied and got back to a respectable 9-11 scoreline. Would the recovery continue? The answer was no as the holders won five of the last seven ends to win 18-11. The other semi-final was a keenly fought affair and, having reached the semifinals last year, Allen Gateshill was keen to go one better on this occasion.

It was “nip & tuck” all the way and, at 14 ends, the team from La Posada held a three shot lead. Unfortunately for them they dropped the next three ends and needed three on the 18th to tie. They only managed the one shot which gave the victory to the Belplaya Four after a thoroughly enjoyable game.

The final proved to be something of an anti-climax with Lennie, Mary, Amber & John unable to find any form at all against the pressure exerted by their opponents. Despite holding shots on several ends, and restricting Joe and his Team to one shot on eight ends, they only won five ends themselves and the Champions of 2013 retained the President’s Trophy for the second year in a row. Many congratulations to Joe Stamper, John Sullivan, Jim Neilson & Juan Abeal. Who would bet against them making it a “hat trick”? Not too many on the Coast. On a pleasant afternoon, a large crowd gathered at Benalmadena to watch the final of this event with two new contenders looking to get their name on the trophy for the first time. On this occasion the opponents were Belplaya and Lauro Golf. As always the match was contested by six triples from each club with a scorecard draw determining the various opponents. In the 2013 final

the winners had one big winning rink which made the aggregate score a formality for the champions and this was the case again this year.

Brian Todd, Lennie Dineen & John Pearce have established themselves as one of the more formidable triples on the coast and it was their 27-4 victory which provided the foundation for Belplaya’s first ever triumph.

Elsewhere the games were keenly contested with the rink between Theo Bellaart’s team, and that of Graham Jarrett sharing the spoils at 14-14, with two others being decided 16-15 and 18-14 in Belplaya’s favour. The ultimate outcome was a 122-79 victory with Belplaya winning five and drawing one of the rinks. Commemorative prizes were presented to both teams by David Parnell of the Sports Shop. Jim Neilson, of Benalmadena, acted on behalf of Murray Johns (competition coordinator) in both umpiring and co-ordinating the final and the Costa del Sol Bowls League would like to thank him, and the Benalmadena Club, for hosting the event. Once again David was thanked for his ongoing sponsorship of the event for the Phillip Parnell Trophy, David’s late father who had been president of Mijas for many years. C.O.G.S. play Guadalhorce

On Thursday 20th March C.O.G.S took the short trip from Lainey’s bar to Guadalhorce Golf Club. The weather was good and conditions perfect for good golf and high scoring. The golf course itself was in great condition with excellent greens and a few fairways that couldn't be missed. Despite this, high scoring was at a premium.

Nearest the pin on the short par 3 was won by one of our guests, Paul Jordan, longest drive was won once again by Heikki Kontinnen on hole 16, Nearest the pin in 2, in true C.O.G.S fashion, was not claimed ( no doubt due to the captain picking a hole with a tree in the middle of the fairway).

The day’s main event went as follows.

In third place with 23 points playing off (22) was Del Allwood, runner up with 24 points playing off

Capt, Ian Vaughan left, with the winner John Bamber 2nd from right, runner-up John Rouse 2nd from left and 3rd Del Allwood far right.

(26) was John Rouse and lifting first place for the first time ever was John Bamber who scored 29 points playing off (26), Well done John!

Team prize not surprisingly went to John Bamber, Del Allwood, John Rouse and Chris Gardener.

That just leaves the coveted wooden spoon which in the absence of Nig Bowler was a wide open competition and claimed by yours truly with a grand total of 13

points playing off (9) and who had clearly spent the day plane-spotting!

Thanks again to Elaine for her hospitality at Lainey’s after the event and the 13 members and two guests who played.

A reminder that our next outing is at El Chaparral on 17th April and guests old and new would be welcome, just check the sign up sheet in Lainey’s. See you all next time. Ian Vaughan (Captain)

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips Sure, you know that a pair of aces are the best hand in Texas Hold'em, but do you know the worst starting hands? Knowing that these hands are almost-alwaysfold'em hands in hold'em is just as important to improving your poker game and not playing like a “Donkey!” Some of these "worst hands" are bad in the same way and will lose at about the same rate, so I've listed 1 to 10 the worst starting hands. (1.) 2-7 2-7 off suit is considered the worst hand in Texas Hold'em. They are the lowest two cards you can have that cannot make a straight (there's 4 cards between 2 and 7). Even if they are suited, they will make you a very low flush, and if either pairs, it's an awfully low hand. Because it is the worst, some players will play it for fun and in online games, it is known as "the hammer". (2.) 2-8 This is basically the same problem as above, only you've got an 8 instead of a 7. Still pretty bad for a high card. Suited or not, this is a fold'em hold'em hand. (3.) 3-8 & 3-7 The 3 makes this hand able to beat the two above it, but with the 3-8 you still can't make a straight and the 3-7 still, well, just sucks. (4.) 2-6 If the board gives you a

miracle flop of 3-4-5, you will have a straight, but someone with a 6-7 will have a higher straight. If you get a flush, someone will probably have a higher flush. Against even four players, this hand will lose about 90% of the time. Not good odds. (5.) 2-9, 3-9, & 4-9 The only thing these three hands have going for them over the hands above is the 9. If the 9 pairs, you'll have a middle pair that could still be beaten by anyone holding pocket 10s, jacks, queens, kings, or aces, yet you might be fooled by a board filled with low cards into thinking you have the best hand and lose a lot of money. No straights can fill the gap between these cards, either. (6.) 2-10 This hand has a legendary quality because Doyle Brunson captured two World Series of Poker Bracelets with it. But it's not a good hand – Doyle Brunson is one of the alltime best in the game and unless you're a Texas road gambler who's logged thousands of hours at the table, you shouldn't try and win with the “Doyle Brunson”. (7.) 5-9 Another hand people play because it's fun is the old 9 to 5, the "Dolly Parton". If you're playing to win, it's not a good idea to play hands because they have a funny

name. That may be how you pick the winning horse in a race, but poker's a marathon, not a sprint, and over the long term there's no doubt this hand is a statistical loser. (8.) 4-7, 4-8, 5-8, 3-6 All these hands will rarely win, especially unsuited. Toss 'em. Just toss'em. Yes, even in the little blind. If you see two low cards in the hole, unless you're in the big blind and you can see the flop for free, fold. (9.) Face card + low card, unsuited One of the most common mistakes I see beginners make is that when they see any paint in their hand, they play it. J-2, Q-3, K-4 whatever – and most of these hands are losers. They're junk that may win a few pots, but more often will lose you huge cash when you find the other player has a higher kicker and the winning hand. (10.) Ace + low card, unsuited This is another common beginner’s mistake, playing any ace. Again, it may win occasionally, and heads-up it's a fine hand, but at a table of four or more, this hand shouldn't be played if there's a raise in front of you. You're going to be outkicked a lot with Acelittle, and it's going to feel like a kick in the junk when the other player shows their higher ace.

Woods woes

Sky’s Swift third in San Remo

Britain's Ben Swift finished third in Sunday's gruelling Milan-San Remo, the first Spring Classic of the season. The Team Sky rider, 26, was beaten in a bunch sprint with Norway's Alexander Kristoff in first place, followed by Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara. Spain's Juan Jose Lobato was fourth. Mark Cavendish finished fifth in the 299km race.

It was the best performance of his career for Yorkshireman Swift, who is hoping to bounce back from last year's injuryhit season. Cavendish, who led the race going to the line, ran out of energy in the last few metres after racing for nearly seven hours in cold and wet conditions in northern Italy.

World number one Tiger Woods missed last week's Arnold Palmer Invitational and says he is a doubt for next month's Masters in Augusta. The 38-year-old American revealed he has a back injury. "It's too early to know about the Masters," said Woods. "I will continue to be evaluated and work closely with my doctors." The Masters is the first major of the year and begins on 10th April at the Augusta National Golf Club.

A successful open morning at Mijas Bowls Club On Sunday 16th March an Open Morning was held at Mijas Bowls Club when residents and visitors were invited to “come and try it” and were given a completely free morning of bowling or tuition. A total of 17 people arrived on that morning and two more had been on the previous Sunday. One young gentleman had quite a surprise to find it was not Ten Pin Bowling, but he joined in nevertheless and

thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There were six people who were absolutely new to bowling and who received some basic coaching from Ann Fenton. The others had bowled at some time in the past at different levels and for differing lengths of time, and they were able to join in games with our own members. They all said how much they had enjoyed the morning and most are

eager to come back. If you would like to know more about bowling, please ring Ann Fenton on 952 588 321 or visit the club which you will find just off the Carretera de Mijas behind Bugar (the Peugeot show rooms). The club is open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 1.30pm for 2.00pm and on Sunday mornings at 10.00am for 10.30am. By Christine Wilson

Boxing’s Mickey Duff dies aged 84

The renowned former boxing promoter and manager Mickey Duff has died aged 84 Duff worked with 16 world champions and many world-class British fighters, including Frank Bruno, Joe Calzaghe, John Conteh and Lloyd Honeyghan. Born Monek Prager in Krakow, Poland, Duff had a four-year career as a boxer in 1940’s England, later rising to prominence as a manager and promoter. He left boxing in 1999, having vowed to retire if Billy Schwer failed to win the WBC world lightweight title.

Camacho Double Seals Enough Bull Important Away Win Celta Vigo 0 - 2 Malaga

With Tissone out for the rest of the season Malaga made two changes with Dardar and Eliseau the new replacements, the other player out was the suspended Antunes. Malaga started the game well looking comfortable on the ball and solid in defence but it was Celta who had the first real chance with Keohndehli smashing the ball against the bar with Caballero beaten. Following that effort, a good Malaga move led to Samuel doing the same. On 23 minutes Malaga were in front, a Duda cross caused havoc in the Celta defence and the ball fell to Camacho at the far post who calmly slotted home. In the 32nd minute

In the second half Celta tried to step it up and were given a boost when Duda was sent off for kicking out at a Celta player.

The rest of the game was played out with Rafinha and Nolito both having great chances for Celta but failing to convert.

Malaga doubled their lead, a great Duda free kick was met by Camacho(pictured) again, this time at the near post and he put it away with a diving header. Malaga looked comfortable and nearly had a third through Amrabat.

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz says his company could quit Formula 1 if he is not happy with the way the sport is run. His remarks follow Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo's exclusion from the Australian Grand Prix and the adoption of new rules. Mateschitz said Red Bull's future in F1 was more "to do with sportsmanship and political influence" than finance. His remarks were made in an interview with the Austrian newspaper Kurier, in which he was asked under what

He replied: "The question is not so much whether it makes economic sense but the reasons would be to do with sportsmanship, political influence, and so on. Mateschitz also criticised the new format of F1, both in terms of the use of a fuel limit and in the sound produced by the turbo hybrid engines, which are much quieter than last year's naturally aspirated V8s.

Amir Khan to fight Luis Collazo Former world champion Amir Khan will meet American Luis Collazo on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather's bout with Marcos Maidana on 3rd May. Khan has not fought since a points win over Julio Diaz in Sheffield last April but will make his welterweight debut against Collazo in Las Vegas. Bayern punished for banners Bayern Munich will have to close a small section of one stand for their Champions League tie with Manchester United. They were punished by Uefa after fans displayed illicit banners during their game against Arsenal. One made reference to Kosovo's desire to be in Fifa, and another used homophobic words and images. The European champions must close one of their 131 Allianz Arena sectors for the second leg against the Red Devils. They have also been fined £8,350 (€10,000).
