Ukrainian interim leader to unite government FIRST with the news every week - FREE / Gratis

Wednesday, February 26th 2014 Issue 266

Ukraine's interim President Olexander Turchynov will start forming a unity government later this week, just days after the ousting of President Viktor Yanukovych. An arrest warrant has been issued for Mr Yanukovych, who has disappeared. Acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said a criminal case had been opened against the ousted president and other officials over "mass murder of peaceful citizens". Mr Yanukovych was last reported seen on Sunday in Balaklava on the Crimean peninsula an autonomous region where the majority of the

population is ethnically Russian.

On Monday, Russia issued its strongest response yet to the ousting of Mr Yanukovych, questioning the legitimacy of the Western-leaning interim leadership. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said they had conducted an "armed mutiny". Unrest in Ukraine began in November when Mr Yanukovych rejected a

landmark association and trade deal with the EU in favour of closer ties with Russia. The US has yet to endorse the new leader, but White House official Jay Carney said on Monday that although Mr Yanukovych "was a democratically elected leader, his actions have undermined his legitimacy, and he is not actively leading the country at present''.

Mr Turchynov has promised that his coalition administration will be a "government of the people". His ally, former PM Yulia Tymoshenko, who was released from jail on Saturday, has ruled out becoming prime minister. But her spokeswoman said she had not yet decided whether to run for the presidency. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

There’s a bit of good news this week for anyone who is experiencing problems with living in Spain. The News Helpdesk has two new people that will be able to help you with problems with phone companies, electricity companies, car transfers, doctors, hospital and dental appointments where you may need help with translation, plus we have reputable plumbers, electricians and handymen if you want anything done around your house. We can help you with all of the above and pretty much anything else you may need. Seeking legal advice first is often unnecessary and very costly in some cases, so come to us first and see if you can save yourselves some money and, if we think you need a lawyer, we can recommend one to suit your needs and that can speak your language. In the first incidence, call me, Kym, on 663 917 076 and I’ll be able to put you on touch with the best person to deal with your needs. The meetings last week were really interesting and have a look at page 10 to learn all about the new Neighbourhood Watch scheme down here and find out how to organise your neighbours into forming your own to keep your areas safe from burglars. At the information meeting on Friday, a lady called Cecilia from a group called Compass told us about our rights as far as the Spanish Health Service goes. She was informative but very funny with it. She had many facinating tips such as you record when you change the oil in your car so, why not when you go to the doctor, what for and what happened? Also, ask for a copy of the notes they write - you may need them later. Diagnosis comes from your history so this was a very good point and the fact that you can change your doctor after 3 months if you’re not getting along with them. I’m hoping that she will write a column for us on occasion so we can all learn how to get the best out of the system here. Watch for her column!

Fears of a split

Crimea and some proRussian areas in the east have seen protests against the overthrow of Mr Yanukovych, sparking fears that Ukraine could be split apart by separatist movements.

In the eastern city of Kharkiv, where Mr Yanukovych has enjoyed support, the head of the regional state administration, Mykhaylo Dobkin, has said he will run for the presidency. During a TV interview, he gave as his reason "the fact that a total attack on the rights of the Russianspeaking population is under way, that laws are being adopted that threaten all those who do not accept fascism and

Nazism". Mr Dobkin has been under pressure from local demonstrators to quit.

UK forensic experts in Kiev

British forensic experts have arrived in Kiev to help establish responsibility for the deaths of dozens of protesters, mostly killed by government snipers. They did not want to reveal their identities or who had tasked them with the investigation, saying it was a politically sensitive issue. However, they said that by examining the trajectories of the shots fired during violence last Thursday, they had already identified four different positions from which government snipers had fired on protesters.

The Foreign Office declined to comment on whether the UK government was assisting in the investigation. Ukraine's health ministry said 88 people were known to have been killed in last week's clashes. Those killed were mostly protesters but also included police.

Police ask for forgiveness

Around 100 riot police went down on their knees in the western city of Lvov on Monday asking for forgiveness and promising they would always be on the side of the Ukranian people. Escorted by members of the local selfdefence groups, their act of contrition took place in the square occupied by proEuropean groups.

Citizen Security Law unconstitutional The General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), the country's legal watchdog, has said that several points of the government's draft Citizens Security Law are unconstitutional and should be stricken from the legislation.

The controversial bill includes fines of up to €30,000 for like ignoring a police officer’s instructions

and “offenses against Spain,” such as shouting or carrying signs “that are harmful or abusive to Spain or any region” during a protest. It also focuses heavily on breaking up street protests, and vests private security guards with the power to help the police in this task. But a report by two members of the CGPJ

(one progressive and one conservative) considers that the bill uses criteria that are “too broad” to justify police intervention in street marches.

The CGPJ also argues that private security guards should not be allowed to assist with the breaking up of demonstrations.

Court questions ETA monitors

Monitors working to secure the disarmament of the Basque terrorist group ETA insisted on Sunday that their only goal is to achieve peace in the Basque region.

In a video posted on the BBC's Spanish-language website last Friday, Ram Manikkalingam and Ronnie Kasrils of the International Verification Commission (IVC) were seen inspecting a Heckler and Koch G3 rifle, three pistols, detonators and see-through plastic bags marked "pentrite", a component of plastic explosives, two grenades, 16kg of explosives, timers and 300 rounds of ammunition displayed on a table with a copy of Pablo Picasso's painting Guernica, which depicts the destruction of a Basque town by German and Italian bombers during the Spanish civil war, in the background. The two IVC members said the weapons had been "put out of use". ETA stole 400 pistols from a French arms depot six years ago, and unnamed security officials have said it still has 250 of them.

representing victims of the violence in the Basque Country asked a High Court judge to question Manikkalingam and Kasrils about the identity and whereabouts of the ETA militants. They told the court on Sunday that they did not know who the militants were nor where ETA weapons were kept. They admitted that after the video was filmed, the two ETA men packed all the material in a box and took it away with them. What had been hailed as the first delivery of weapons turned out to be little more than a propaganda exercise. The Partido Popular's general secretary in the Basque Country, Arantza Quiroga, said the video, which she said was a "tomadero de pelo (leg pull)", was an insult to the Basque people, a sentiment echoed by other critics. However, Basque regional premier Iñigo Urkullu, whose moderate

consists of former diplomats, politicians and political advisers, led by Ram Manikkalingam.

Basque Nationalist party backs the verification committee, said it was "a small step, insufficient, but a necessary first stage towards full disarmament."

Fernandez Diaz said Madrid would not give credibility to a "theatrical exercise". He said the government was working towards the dissolution of ETA, and disarming of ETA did "not need verifiers". He said it was

"not verifiers that defeated ETA, but the police and the Guardia Civil".

State of the More African migrants nation debate storm Melilla An

organisation

At least 100 African migrants successfully stormed Melilla's border fence on Monday, out of a total of around 500 who made the attempt. Morocco security forces clashed with the migrants, leaving 27 people wounded and arresting 96, Melilla officials said.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy kicked off the State of the Nation in Parliament on Tuesday by highlighting the radical change in the headlines over the past 12 months.

Instead of "Spain on the edge of the precipice" and "EU bail out imminent", they now proclaim that "Spain is the new Germany" and Spain offers hope to Europe". The PM will concentrate on the country's economic turnaround during a debate expected to last till the end of the week, while the opposition parties will concentrate on Catalan independence, abortion, the end of ETA, and

migrants' attempts to cross into Spain through Ceuta and Melilla.

The PM said in his opening speech that people earning less than €12,000 will not have to pay taxes, and more tax breaks are expected.

The Moroccan interior ministry said the migrants hurled rocks at the security forces as they stormed the six-metre high double barbed wire fence. A Spanish government spokesman said the migrants were "very violent" and had targeted two different sections of the border fence.

About 150 African migrants made it into Melilla after a similar assault on the border fence on February 17th, and 15 migrants drowned in Moroccan waters on February 6th while trying to enter Ceuta by sea.

The Spanish's interior ministry admitted that police fired rubber bullets as the migrants swam into Spanish territory, but denied the shooting contributed to the drowning. Melilla is a major crossing point for sub-Saharan Africans seeking work or asylum in Europe. Together with the other Spanish enclave,

Ceuta, it is the European Union's only land border with Africa. 10 years!

The IVC received another blow on Tuesday when several politicians who have supported it so far refused to attend a meeting in San Sebastian later this week, apparently put off by what one called a "farce". Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, Tony Blair and former Irish president Bertie Ahern, were among those who supported the setting up of the Commission in October 2011.

Mecca-Medina rail line to be tested

During a visit to inspect work on the MeccaMedina rail link in Saudi Arabia at the end of last week, Public Works Minister Ana Pastor said the Saudi authorities had informed her that section four of the 450-kilometerlong line would be finished in time to test the highspeed Talgo designed for the project in December. Worth €6.736 billion, the Mecca-Medina project is the largest overseas contract ever obtained by Spanish companies. It includes the design and

construction of the line, the supply of 35 trains, and the operation and maintenance of the track for 12 years, extendable to 17. The project is technically challenging as the line has to be able to operate in temperatures ranging from zero to 50 degrees Celsius and be able to cope with storms of very fine sand. Pastor met with the Saudi ministers of transport and finance, as well as the governor of Riyadh and officials from the railway sector. She

said the Saudi officials were very happy with how the Haramain (Arabic for two holy cities) project was going.

The Saudi government has plans to invest around

€70 billion in railway infrastructure alone over 10 years. Among the projects are subway systems for Mecca and Jeddah and a line that will link the Red Sea with the Persian Gulf.

'WhatsApp is already worth more'

On Day One of the Barcelona Mobile World Congres, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg told a captive audience that “WhatsApp is already worth more than what we paid for it.” He was answering a question about why his company recently announced the purchase of the popular text messaging service for €13.8 billion. “It’s a great

company for us. It’s the best application we've seen on mobiles,” he added.

Since announcing the acquisition last week, WhatsApp shares have risen by $4. Zuckerberg said that Facebook would give WhatsApp the stability it needs to keep developing its business model, which is connecting more people. He also said

that despite the deal, the messaging service would remain autonomous.

Zuckerberg also gave details of his next project, Internet.org, which seeks to give internet access to

the two thirds of the planet which remain unconnected. His partners in this endeavour are Samsung, Opera, Nokia, Ericsson and Qualcomm, among others.

Spanish paella

Co-founder Guillermo Navarro said Wikipaella aims at "policing" paella around the world: "It's a dish that's really trendy these days. And there's lots of people taking advantage of it and selling what they call authentic, traditional or Spanish paella." While visiting the UK and the US Navarro got first-hand experience

of how a dish revered by his family for generations was losing its identity. He was particularly disgusted by UK chefs like Jamie Oliver who add chorizo to their recipes. "That's not authentic or traditional," he said. "Imagine if we said that we were making typical British fish and chips and we were putting oranges in it?" Navarro also discovered when he moved to Madrid that 90 per cent of the paellas eaten there can be compared to the real paella.

Wikipaella was launched last week as a portal into the world of authentic paella and other traditional rice dishes of

Prince inaugurates Mobile World Congress

The latest edition of the GSMa Mobile World congress (MWc) kicked off in barcelona on Monday, set against a global scenario of optimism and booming sales. The event began life in 1987 as an operators’ trade fair, and was later largely taken over by phone manufacturers, but for the last few editions it has been a showcase for what is really driving the mobile phone market: applications. The stars of this year’s event are Facebook supremo Mark Zuckerberg and Jan Koum of Whatsapp. like any other fashion show, much of what will be on display at MWc 2014 will seem over the top, but it should be seen as confirming next year’s trends, or even those of the following year. Screens are bigger, cameras are getting better, the phones are cheaper, some even turn themselves on when the owner picks up, thanks to a system that recognizes the pulse of its owner. its touch screen also recognizes the owner’s fingerprints, avoiding the need to type in a password. With one billion intelligent phones sold last year (53 per cent of the total, and forecasted to rise to 70 per cent this year), pretty soon there will only be one type of phone in the world. News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Barcelona paid €13.5m to the Tax Office on Monday after being charged with tax fraud over the signing of Brazilian striker Neymar, but insisted they had not committed any offence.

In a statement, the club said: "The aim is to cover eventual interpretations that could be given to the contracts drawn up in the operation to sign Neymar." The club added: "The board denies the existence of any

tax-related crime in relation to the fiscal obligations arising from the signing of the player.

"Given the existence of a possible divergent interpretation of the exact amount of tax responsibility arising from the signing and to defend the club's reputation and good name, FC Barcelona has this morning made a complimentary tax declaration of a total of

€13,550,830, although we remain convinced that the original tax payment was in line with our fiscal obligations." Last month, Sandro Rosell resigned as president of the club following accusations he misappropriated money. He is also being investigated but denies any wrongdoing. At the time of the

transfer, Barcelona said they had paid €57 million for Neymar but it has been alleged that, if other contracts are taken into account, the actual cost of the player was far greater.

And last week a judge ruled there was enough evidence against Barcelona to continue investigations into the transfer. There has not yet been any confirmation whether the case will be dropped after

Barcelona's payment.

Neymar has scored seven goals in 18 league appearances for Barcelona

this season, as well as netting three in seven Champions League matches.

Italian PM vows for a N radical change PAKISTAn

Newly sworn-in Prime Minister Matteo Renzi set out a "bold vision" of reform, proposing election law changes, tax cuts and investment in jobs to tackle Italy's ailing economy.

He also wants to increase welfare payments for the unemployed and establish a programme of school building. The Democratic Party leader also said he wanted to abolish the upper house of parliament as a law-making body. His broad coalition won votes of confidence in the Senate and the lower house on Tuesday. The Democratic Party leader, who is not an MP,

acknowledged that at 39, he was not even old enough to be a member of the upper house. The minimum age for a senator is 40. He told senators he wanted to start reforms to the upper house as early as next month. The 16-strong government, in which half the ministers are women, has an average age of under 48, the youngest in modern Italian history.

Mr Renzi, who is also mayor of Florence, told the Senate on Monday that Italy, the third biggest economy in the eurozone, had to get serious about tackling its public

finances. It was not because of pressure from German Chancellor Angela Merkel or the head of the European Central Bank, he said, but because "we have to do it out of respect

President Goodluck Jonathan has defended the army's efforts against Islamist militants in the north, where more than 200 civilians died in attacks last week. In response to recent criticism, Mr Jonathan said the fight against Boko Haram "will improve".

Boko Haram has been conducting a four-year campaign of violence to push for Islamic rule in northern Nigeria. At a press conference on Monday, President Jonathan criticised the governor of Borno state, Kashim Shettima, who recently stated that the Boko Haram

militants were better armed and more motivated than the Nigeria military. He said if the Borno state governor felt the military were not useful, he would pull them out of the state for a month. He then suggested it would become so unsafe that even the governor would not be able

to stay there.

Top Taliban shot dead

Security sources said on Monday that a senior Pakistani Taliban commander has been shot dead in a militant stronghold near the Afghan border. They said Asmatullah Shaheen was ambushed as he drove through a village near Miranshah in north Waziristan. Two others in the vehicle also died. It is unclear who killed them. There has been no word from the militants. Shaheen, who came from the small Bhittani tribe, was briefly the Pakistani Taliban interim leader after its chief Hakimullah Mehsud was killed last year. He shot to prominence in December 2011 when his men kidnapped and killed about 15 security force personnel. He is believed to have depended on the much larger Mehsud tribe for his clout in militant circles.

Top drug lord arrested

One of the world's most wanted drug barons, Joaquin Guzman, known as el chapo or "Shorty", was arrested in Sinaloa state in a joint operation with US anti-drugs forces over the weekend. He was the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, which smuggles huge amounts of illegal drugs into the US. Guzman was taken to Mexico city and paraded before the media, before boarding a helicopter surrounded by heavily armed troops and taken straight to prison. Guzman became an important figure in the drug cartels in the 1980s. He was arrested in Guatemala in 1993 and handed over to the Mexican authorities. He was sentenced to more than 20 years in jail, but he bribed officers and escaped a maximum security jail in a laundry basket in 2001. Since then, he has continued to run the Sinaloa cartel with complete impunity. The US state department had offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to his arrest.

Leopard on loose terrorises town

Panic has gripped the northern Indian town of Meerut where a leopard is on the loose.

Schools and colleges are shut and a high alert has been sounded in the town, which is a two-hour drive from the capital, Delhi. The animal was first spotted in the town on Sunday afternoon in a warehouse where it attacked and injured a man who entered the room. Later, the leopard took refuge in a nearby hospital, but escaped from the window a few hours later. Rescue teams of wildlife experts have been called in to help tranquilise and capture the animal, officials said. Wildlife experts say there are no reliable population estimates for leopards in India, but rough estimates put their number at about 10,000. Tigers and other big cats have been known to stray into populated areas and conservationists have warned that such confrontations may increase as humans encroach on animal habitats.

Anti-Putin activists jailed

A Moscow court sentenced eight protesters for rioting and attacking police at a demonstration against Vladimir Putin's inauguration for a third presidential term in 2012. Seven of the activists received prison terms of up to four years. An eighth, the only woman on trial, received a suspended sentence. Prosecutors had requested jail terms of five to six years. Their lawyers said the sentences were "harsh and inappropriate, based on the political situation, not on the nature of the charges". Outside the court, police detained about 200 people who rallied in support of the defendants. The activists were convicted on Friday but the judge delayed sentencing until Monday - sparking speculation that the Kremlin was trying to avoid negative publicity ahead of Sunday's closing ceremony for the Sochi Winter Olympics. During Monday's hearing, the accused men were held handcuffed in a cage. Amnesty International called the guilty verdicts a "hideous injustice" which came at the end of a "show trial".

Egyptian government resigns unexpectedly the

Egypt's interim Prime Minister Hazem Beblawi unexpectedly announced the resignation of his government on Monday. Mr Beblawi said the decision was taken "in light of the current situation the country is going through", and comes amid a series of strikes, including one by public sector workers and rubbish collectors, and an acute shortage of cooking gas. The decision was made after a 30-minute meeting attended by Field Marshal Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, defence minister and first deputy prime minister. The field marshal is widely expected to announce soon that he will step down from both posts and run for president. According to the new constitution approved in January, an election must take place by mid-

April. Observers say Field Marshal Sisi would probably win, given his popularity and the lack of any serious rivals. Mr Beblawi, who has been criticised in local media for his perceived indecisiveness and inability to deal with the country's economic woes, was appointed last July after the military overthrew President Mohammed Morsi following mass protests.

Since then, more than 1,000 people have been killed and thousands of others detained in a crackdown by the security

Prime Minister Hazem Belawi

forces on the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist movement to which Mr Morsi belongs. Militants based in the Sinai peninsula have meanwhile stepped up attacks on government, police and military personnel, killing hundreds.

Venezuelan protesters stop traffic Anti-government protesters in Venezuela have erected barricades in the capital, Caracas, piling burning rubbish and furniture on main roads in an attempt to bar access to the city.

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles had earlier asked his supporters not to follow a call for a "national blockade" circulated on social media. The blockades are the latest in a series of opposition

protests in which 13 people have died. There have been reports of similar blockades in the cities of Maracaibo and Valencia.

Protesters say they will continue with their wave of protests, which started more than two weeks ago, until Mr Maduro resigns. More than 130 people have been injured and an opposition leader, Leopoldo Lopez, has been arrested on charges of inciting violence and

trying to topple the government with the help of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The unrest was started by students in the western states of Tachira and Merida, who took to the streets to protest high crime rate and economic woes, including record inflation and shortages of basic goods. After the arrest of a number of student leaders, the protests quickly spread to the capital, Caracas.

Plans to downsize US military Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel unveiled plans on Monday to shrink the US Army to its smallest size since before the US entered World War Two.

The Pentagon chief proposed trimming the active-duty Army to 440,000-450,000 personnel, down from

520,000 currently.

Cold War-era Air Force fleets - the U-2 spy plane and the A-10 attack jet will also be retired. The US defence budget remains higher than during most of the Cold War. However,

defence

budget analysts have criticised the proposal as "hype". They said that even after cutting troop levels and eliminating of the A-10 and U-2 aeroplanes, overall military spending, including for the war in Afghanistan and on the US nuclear weapons programme, will remain near 2005 levels.

Army’s Watchkeeper takes to the sky Business for Britain

Losses and injuries to British troops in Afghanistan have meant that the top brains in the military and in industry have come together to try and provide reconnaissance and surveillance that does not expose troops on the ground to the level of risk they now face.

A big step forward comes this week as the Army’s Watchkeeper “spy

in the sky” unmanned aircraft takes to the skies over Salisbury Plain.

The aircraft has a wingspan of 35 feet and it can fly to an altitude of 16,000 feet. Developed by Thales UK, the aircraft can stay over areas significantly longer than conventional aircraft and provide clear pictures for troops on the ground, even at night.

Consumer confidence and those energy bills Consumer confidence continues to rise in Britain and the majority of people in the country now expect to become better off in the coming months. The Lloyds Bank’s monthly Spending Power report reached an all-time high. The bank emphasised that in spite of poor interest rates people were inclined toward saving more and paying down debts rather than spending.

Of concern among consumers was the increase in spending on gas and electricity bills

which is growing rapidly at about 6 per cent a year.

Action taken to protect savers

British savers lose tens of thousands of pounds over the lifetime of their pension schemes because less than forthright pension providers hide the fact that they are skimming money off their funds through hidden charges. Now the Government has promised that savers will be better protected in future. Pension fund managers have been told they must come clean about hidden costs contained in defined contribution workplace schemes. The Office of Fair Trading warned last year that there was insufficient transparency, but it is rather like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. There is now a reluctance to trust financial institutions in Britain and many savers feel that if they save they risk having the benefit taken from them by greedy fund managers. LIVERPOOL

2 womemn, 4 dogs New debate on pensions fund charges shot dead in Farnham, Surrey

WEDNESDAY, February 26th 2014

theNews Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

John Lowe, an 82-year old who lives in Farnham, Surrey was arrested at the scene of a double murder at Keepers Cottage Stud, Cooksbury Road on Sunday morning following reports of a firearms discharge. Police attending the scene found the bodies of two women, Christine Lee, 66, and her 40-year-old daughter, Lucy and four of their dogs. Both women and their four dogs had suffered gunshot wounds according to the findings of their post mortems. John Lowe remains in custody while inquiries continue but police say that Mr Lowe and the women were known to each other and they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the murders.

It has now emerged that licenced shotguns had been removed by police from the property in May 2013 but were returned in July but is not yet known whether one of the guns was used to kill them.

Three German Shepherds and a Labrador were found dead and many other animals were removed from the scene by the RSPCA. Detective Chief Inspector Mark Preston said: "It is extremely sad that two people have lost their lives and police family liaison officers are working to support their relatives and friends at this very difficult time. We are conducting a full and thorough investigation

into the circumstances surrounding these two deaths, however, at this time, we believe this is an isolated incident and there is no further risk to the wider community. Officers remain at the scene conducting enquiries and will be on site for some time. This investigation is in its early stages and we will issue updates when we have them." RSPCA spokeswoman Calie Rydings said: "We are aware of the situation and working with police to ensure the welfare of the animals involved. We can confirm there are a number of animals at the property and will update people on the situation as soon as we can."

Thousands of people looking forward to their retirement have found that the hidden costs charged on their retirement pots have wiped thousands of pounds off what they were expecting to get.

The Government is now ordering pension fund managers to come clean about such costs.

Pensions minister Steve Webb said transparency in workplace defined contribution schemes was crucial so people could make good financial decisions.

In a written statement to MPs, pensions minister, Stephen Webb said in future ministers would be under a statutory obligation to create rules to ensure transaction costs were more open. An amendment will be introduced to the Pensions Bill in the House of Lords on today, Wednesday.

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) warned last year that there was "insufficient visibility and comparability of charges" to ensure that competition in the market was fully

He said: "Transparency of costs and charges is fundamental for good scheme governance and to enabling comparison between schemes. Requiring increased transparency is the latest step in the wider Government programme to see fair charges for people who are automatically enrolled into workplace pensions." Mr Webb also insisted he

In a joint statement to the London Stock exchange, the companies said that talks were in a “preliminary stage” and there was no certainty at this stage if the talks would result in their merger but analysts said that an allshare merger of equals would be the most likely deal and, last Friday, Shares in Dixons were up 7.9 percent at 1349 GMT,

Carphone's were up 5.7 percent. Britain's Takeover Panel will require the companies to announce by March 24 a firm intention to make an offer. would "see through" proposals for a cap on fund charges - expected to be around 0.75% a year.

Small variations in charges can make huge differences over time to the eventual size of the pension pot that someone ends up with.

The Government has said someone who saves £100 a month over a typical working lifetime of 46 years could lose almost £170,000 from their pension pot with a 1% charge and over £230,000 with a 1.5% charge. School holidays Dixons and Carphone Warehouse talk rip off debate At long last MPs will be debating on the issue of people being forced to pay more for holidays during school holidays after dad, Paul Cookson staged an internet rant on the subject and set up an online group that now has over 15,000 members to campaign against holiday companies hiking up prices to an unreasonable level. A petition with more than 166,000 signatures has resulted in the Commons Backbench Committee bringing the issue before Westminster Hall for debate which includes an idea that school holidays could be staggered, an idea welcomed by campaigners. Paul said he was “sick to death” of being ripped off during his Facebook posting entitled “school holiday rant”.One member of the group sited a holiday to Gran Canaria costing £2,821 in term time and £5,887 during the holidays. Mr Cookson told Sky News: "I think we expect the prices are going to increase during these peak times because some companies have to put on more entertainment, more food and drink, so you can

appreciate that. But it's to how much (it is increased). When you're talking three, four or even five times the amount, it just doesn't work." Head teachers are unable to allow school time holidays following a change in the law unless there are “exceptional circumstances” and can fine parents who take their children on holiday in term time. Liberal Democrat MP, John Hemming, who proposed the debate says: "Obviously parents are being charged a lot more for one part of the year compared to another part of the year ... what matters is finding a way that people can go on holiday with their children and spend time with their children." Sean Tipton, from the Association of British Travel Agents, defended the price changes. "The reason is very simple, it's basic economics," he said, adding: "School holidays fall at times of the year when demand is already very high, so holiday companies are like any other industry and will increase their prices when demand does go up."

The UK’s Dixons Retail, Europe’s no 2 electricals retailer, and Carphone Warehouse who are Europe’s largest independent mobile phone retailer, are in merger talks that could make the companies market capitalisation worth almost three and a half billion pounds which could push them up into the FTSE 100 list of leading companies.

"It is a bold move for Dixons; it is slightly harder at this stage to see what's in it for Carphone." Other analysts pointed to buying and head-office cost savings. Neighbourhood watch scheme

Michael Jackson’s Thriller album went to No 1 and stayed there for 37 weeks

On Monday morning at 11am a venta just outside Coin was packed with residents who had heard about a meeting explaining how to form a Neighbourhood Watch Group. A high number of burglaries have been carried out in the areas of Coin, Alhaurin el Grande and Cartama and people had had enough and wanted to do something that wasn’t illegal to fight back.

Resident Stuart Hilton presided over the meeting and Geoff Salter, president of Vecinos Corporando y Colaborando de España (in other words the Spanish version of Neighbourhood Watch) had travelled down from Torrevieja to give us a bit of the history of the organisation in Spain and to explain how to set up one in the area.

The Neighbourhood Watch Scheme started in 1999 in Torrevieja at a time when the Costa Blanca was being dubbed “Costa Crime”. There were 4 ex-policemen in the area who had dealings with Neighbourhood Watch in the UK in the past and were willing to lend their expertise in the area for one to be set up in their area of the Costa Blanca. Spain differs from the UK insomuch as they receive no Government financial backing here so everything is carried out and organised by volunteers and by donations to cover costs and the scheme has no political affiliation. Geoff Salter explained that Neighbourhood Watch is not necessarily the answer to crime in your area but it has been noticed that there has been a drop in burglaries, car theft etc., by up to 65% in the areas that are covered by the scheme and it relies on co-operation between neighbours and the various police departments. He went on to stress that the idea is to watch the neighbourhood, not your neighbours and they do not patrol the streets! The Costa Blanca

branch has the support of the local mayors, Guardia Civil and local police and the scheme cannot be run without it as the Alcalde, or mayor, has to apply to Madrid for registration in the area. The scheme relies on having a coordinator who will gather information that they will then hand over to the appropriate police department to help combat local crime.

It was also stressed that any time there is a so called “petty crime” you must do a denuncia as crimes under €400 are treated as a misdemeaner but, once two or three have been reported, they accumulate until they then become a crime that can be acted upon. However, the “value” of a crime does not include any damage done while the criminals are breaking into your property as this is ruled a civil case for which you would have to seek recompense from your insurance company. It is not possible to make an anonymous denuncia but the details will only be released to the persons that are a party to it.

If your house is burgled while you are out or away on holiday and a friend or neighbour makes a denuncia, if you get back and find that something that wasn’t on the original denuncia is missing you can go along to the police and have it added. You will be given a crime number that you can pass onto your insurance company for their information. You can also sign a form on the Scheme’s website allowing a friend or neighbour to make a denunci or enter your premises on your behalf. It was pointed out that you should never put anything labelled as “home” on your telephone

or Satnav in the car. If your car has been stolen, the thieves will know that you are out and lo and behold, you’ve just given them your address!

John Sutton and Javier Florida Martín from de Cotta Law explained that you are allowed to use “reasonable force” otherwise known as “proportional violence” when finding someone in your home or trying to steal your car etc., but there is no clear cut answer to what is deemed “reasonable force” and, if the perpetrator decides that he wants to accuse you of hurting him while he steals your car, the courts would decide on a case by case basis whether you went over the top or not. Sorry, but guns, knives, baseball and cricket bats would probably therefore be deemed unreasonable if used against them. However, on the bright side, you are allowed to detain them while awaiting the arrival of the police.

Since 1999’s small start, the organisation now covers 55 towns, has 1450 co-ordinators and 2,500,000 members homes are covered from Javea in the north to Andalucia and Malaga in the south of Spain. A survey of their members found that the majority said they felt safer here in Spain than they did in the UK. Neighbourhood watch Spain has a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, membership secretary all of which are necessary to fulfil the necessary regulations. They are authorised to set up other local branches, including in this area, but each branch must have a principal co-ordinator to take responsibility for the running of the branch. Neighbourhood Watch

branches need to be flexible. Campo houses need a different type of looking after than houses situated on urbanisations and those in the towns. Neighbourhood Watch branches share information on scams, internet scams, burglaries, thefts and car thefts plus anything else the local Guardia Civil may require to be circulated. President Geoff Salter keeps all members registration details and complies the data protection act so you know your details will be safe.

We were told not to attempt a citizen’s arrest or try to apprehend a suspect as you could land in hot water for assault yourselves and, in any case, property is not worth risking your lives over. However, you should make a note of cars that shouldn’t be in an area – their registration number, make, colour and a description of anybody that is in the vehicle in question. Better still, most of us carry mobile phones with cameras in them so, take a photo that could be used to gain a conviction later. However, DO NOT post any photos on social media websites as you could get in trouble for that as well! On the point of CCTV, you can record whatever

you like within your private premises but you must not record anything of a public area and that includes your private “camino” that your house is on just in case a member of the public walks past and objects – again, you could land in hot water for it!

Neighbourhood Watch Spain negotiates with insurance companies, currency exchange companies etc., to get preferential rates for their members. Membership is free and more information can be found by going to www.nhwinspain.com

Stickers for your car and house windows are available, as are ceramic tiles, at cost price of €4, for entrances to your property plus UV pens for marking your property with your NIE or passport number so that, if and when your articles are found, they can be traced back to you.

If anybody from areas other than inland please go to their website.

Toxic mushrooms found in park

An area in the Parque de los Tres Jardines in San Pedro was closed to the public after some mushrooms collected in the park poisoned one dog and made another very sick. They belonged to the family of a boy who had picked the mushrooms during a school excursion to the park. He gave them to the dogs - one of which died three hours later. The boy's family immediately reported the dog's death to the authorities, who warned the families of the other children. The area will reopen after all the toxic mushrooms have been removed.

A report by Real Instituto Elcano urges the Spanish government to engage in ad hoc dialogue as a means of normalising relations with Gibraltar, while simultaneously exploring “imaginative” options to find a definitive solution to its claim over the Rock.

The 150-page report is based on input from more than 200 foreign policy experts and focuses on the problems in cross-border relations arising from the combination of the Spanish claim, illicit

traffic, specific actions by the authorities in Gibraltar and the issues of frontier demarcation.

The report said: “Among the principal repercussions of this situation are the problems in daily life faced by citizens on one side or the other of the fence, and distortions in the important bilateral relations between Spain and the UK, which both states want to protect.”

addressing these problems were necessary given that other mechanisms – the Brussels process, the Trilateral Forum and the multilateral UN forum – are currently blocked. Its call for an “imaginative” solution echoes remarks made by Socialist Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez when he visited the then Prime Minister John Major in 1991.

Insulting our intelligence

I

'm grateful to fellow columnist Martin Delfin this week because he's managed to explain the fuss caused by a documentary about the attempted coup on February 23rd 1981. I'd seen it advertised on the telly all last week but decided not to watch it because I thought it was only going to be a rehash of everything we already know about it. It was aired on Sunday and on Monday every newspaper carried stories about the "controversy" caused by what turned out to be a spoof, or mockumentary as some of them called it, but none of the articles went into any great detail about the contents of programme itself.

S

o I was completely mystified, and a bit worried because I know that the University of the Third Age (U3A) discussion group on Modern Spanish History that I coordinate will be wanting me to give them full details when we next meet, which will be the day after this paper comes out. I was just dreading the idea of spending hours going through Google when Martin and El Pais came to the rescue.

T

he tragedy here is that millions of people still believe that the Apollo 11 moon landing never took place and no doubt millions of Spaniards will believe this totally untrue version of the attempted coup.

T

he other "mockery", of course, was the farcical video shown on the BBC and then re-shown endlessly on Spanish television over the weekend. We had been warned that the Basque terrorist group ETA was going to take the so-called peace process a step further last weekend and were looking forward to see what they would come up with.

I

nearly fell off my chair when I saw what the International Verification Commission was

hailing as an important step towards the disarming of ETA. Just look at the photo on page 2 - then bear in mind that the French security forces said a few weeks ago that ETA still has enough explosive to make at least 30 bombs, and who knows how many pistols and rifles. They hide all this stuff in what are called "zulos" in Spanish - underground hiding places which are scattered all over the place, especially in the south of France, where ETA used to feel more secure. As one observer said - all they have to do to prove that they're serious about disarming is give the Guardia Civil and the French police a map indicating where they are and let them get on with it.

T

hen again, we are not witnessing a peace process. As one journalist on a political chat show pointed out on Monday there was no war in the conventional sense of two sides taking pot shots at each other. What happened here was that one side - Spanish society supplied the victims and the other side - ETA - killed them.

I

don't know what makes ETA think they can get away with this theatrical nonsense. Apparently, the ETA watchers say, they think that if they make a little concession every now and then they'll convince the government to be nicer to ETA prisoners. About 600 of them are in different jails across Spain and ETA wants them to join the 200 or so who are in jails in the north of the country. This is simply not going to happen. A few of them have repented their violent past but most of them are still hard core terrorists who would love the opportunity to get together and plan more assassinations and bombings. There's strength in numbers, don't forget. Keeping them scattered weakens them, which is what the authorities want. It's claimed that there are only about 30 active ETA members outside the jails but nobody can say for sure just how many there are. Meanwhile, both the French and the Spanish authorities say they will continue hunting down them and their arms until the group finally decides to disarm and disband.

B

Fool me once

Writes for the English language version of

W

e saw two really big shows over the weekend. First, the BBC was once again duped by ETA into broadcasting a staged video that showed two hooded terrorists handing over a document to members of the International Verification Committee in which the Basque criminal organisation pledged to “decommission” part of its arsenal as another good-faith gesture toward an eventual peace process. The scene, which was taped last month in the French city of Toulouse, caused a stir among some of the most conservative members of Spanish society and with good reason. Here we have two respected members of an international mediating team meeting with murderers.

T

hen on Sunday night, Spanish journalist Jordi Évole pulled the wool over people’s eyes for a brief moment. On the 33rd anniversary of the attempted coup, La Sexta broadcast a “documentary” theorizing that the entire event, including Lieutenant-Colonel Antonio Tejedo’s storming of Parliament and King Juan Carlos’ historic speech in the wee hours of the morning, had been staged. Évole, who put together the mockumentary, used actual interviews from witnesses and experts and intertwined them with a fantastic rewriting of history. In the end, the popular journalist admitted that the entire broadcast had been cooked up in the same manner as the controversial 2002 French film “Dark Side of the Moon,” which pretended to uncover the US government’s setup of the entire Apollo 11 moon-landing. Évole suckered thousands of viewers into thinking that he had also blew the lid on the many still unanswered questions stemming from the February 23, 1981 coup.

P

Journalist Jordi Ëvole

eople believe what they see and hear, that is a proven fact. But both these two flawed pushover events actually posture on opposite poles: Évole’s was a fun experiment

while ETA’s performance only served to support the government’s leery suspicions that the Basque terrorist group is just not quite ready to give up the fight.

I

n the shadowy video, the two IVC members appeared with the hooded terrorists behind an arsenal of weapons, including dynamite and rockets, placed on a long table. They were handed a document with ETA’s purported commitment to deactivate part of its stockpile. But this sheer mockery was exposed two days later when the IVC members, Ram Manikkalingam and Ronnie Kasrils appeared before the High Court and admitted before Judge Ismael Moreno that the ETA members packed up their repository, sealed it in boxes and took it with them after the meeting. The mediators assured the court that the weapons, including the explosives, were beyond use. Yet there was no footage of the IVC members actually testing the arsenal.

O

nce again the BBC in a mad dash to get an exclusive on air was also patsy to this entire show. (ETA prefers using the BBC as their mouthpiece because the British broadcaster never refers to them as terrorists but separatists.) After Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz said that the government was not going to fall for any “theatrics,” the IVC immediately accused the Spanish of making their work in accomplishing a peace process “difficult if not impossible.”

O

rson Welles may have been jostled by Évole’s attempt to play with the minds of his viewers. But just as ETA’s trustworthiness to enter peace negotiations is once again seriously questioned, Évole also put his journalistic integrity on the line. Welles’ famous 1938 “War of the Worlds” broadcast showed how powerful radio can be used as a persuasive weapon. But the American director was not trying to fool his listeners: he had broadcast disclaimers before the show and during commercial breaks, but people chose to tune them out. Évole on the other hand, wanted to mislead his viewers even if it was just for an hour or so and succeeded.

Eggs, flour, water... T.I.M.S at the Salon it’s pancake day on Varietes Theatre Tuesday March 4th the

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, falls between 2 February and 9 March, whichever day is 47 days before Easter Sunday depending on the date for Easter - and this year, 2014, Pancake Day falls on Tuesday 4 March. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, better known as the first day of Lent in the Christian calendar that lasts six weeks and is a time for giving things up so people used to use up all their eggs, sugar and such goodies before the start of Lent the following day. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent. A more recent tradition is instead of giving up something, you can do a good deed or even one a week for the six weeks instead. The name Shrove comes from the old word "shrive" which means to confess. On

Shrove Tuesday, in the Middle Ages, people used to confess their sins so that they were forgiven before the season of Lent began. All over Britain, schools and communities take part in Pancake Races where you have to run along tossing a pancake up in the air and catching it again in your frying pan. The tradition is said to have originated when a housewife from Olney, Buckinghamshire, was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake. The most famous

Next Wednesday on March 5th T.I.M.S (The International Music Society) will present another of their ever increasingly popular musical evenings, this time at the Salón Varietés Theatre in Fuengirola town centre.

pancake race,at Olney in Buckinghamshire, has been held since 1445. The contestants, traditionally women, carry a frying pan and race to over a 415 yard course to the finishing line. The rules are strict: contestants have to toss their pancake at both the start and the finish, as well as wear an apron and a scarf. Traditionally, when men want to participate, they must dress up as a housewife (usually an apron and a bandana). The race is followed by a church service.

The Choir's extensive new repertoire titled “Music to Welcome Spring” is described as music to suit all tastes and varies from “Can you feel the Love” from the musical The Lion King, extracts from “Phantom of the Opera” works by Verdi and Bizet, to a little bit of feel good factor from Abba and British cool from the Beatles it includes several solo's from members of the choir and one from new choir member Dawn Boardman.

The concert also features two piano solo's by Christen LangleyWarner. One the very recognisable first

movement from Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.14 in C-sharp minor ,"Quasi una fantasia" popularly known as the “Moonlight Sonata” and the second the technically challenging, Étude (study) # 3 in C flat major, known as “Un Sospiro” (A Sigh) by Franz Liszt, a romantic piece which involves the difficult crossing of hands technique. The concert starts at 8.00pm, the musical director is Margaret Williams and the comperé for the evening will be Lars Roos.

Finally many thanks from T.I.M.S. to all those who made a donation after the 14th February Bil Bil concert. A fabulous night out... twice! “Help for Heroes” When the Costa del Sol branch of the Royal Airforces Association have a dinner, they certainly do it in style, and the recent get together with the Costa Blanca, North Costa Blanca and Gibraltar branches of the association together with our own was no exception. And it was lovely to meet the new Station Commander, Wing Commander Greg Smith, in charge of RAF Gibraltar came with colleague Kevin Roberts and his wife Alison. With the Friday being Valentine’s night everybody was dressed to impress and the conversation flowed along with the wine all evening long. Singer Jo Layte got everybody up and dancing after dinner to burn off some of the calories from the canapés and three course dinner. Then on Saturday it was Gala Night. Again, everyone was in their finery and a great night was had by all. Guests

moved to different tables and, again, conversation flowed and new friends were made.

All branches voiced what a good time they had and it is expected that this may now become and annual event as it was so successful. Don’t tell Ron Sibbett though as he has to do the organising along with the members of the Costa del Sol RAFA committee, Jack Griggs, Reg Hayward, and Fred Briggs and, I suspect just a teensy bit of help from wives Jill and Barbara.

A date with the mother from hell You will come to hate the central character in ‘The Anniversary’. A matriarch who regards her three sons as her vassals is a chilling enough concept. One who summons them to her wedding anniversary each year, despite her husband’s death a decade before, is really weird. Add the fact that she has only one eye and the creepy scenario is put beyond doubt. This black comedy is shot through with icy wit as well a scary plot. Written by British playwright Bill MacIlwraith, it is being performed next month by the International Theatre Studio. This production heralds the return of two former ITS stalwarts in Peter Brooks and Kate Jackson. Peter, who is directing the play, is well-known for his many successful productions at the Salon Varietes where Kate is a well-known actress. The ITS is also delighted to welcome two new young performers – Lauren

Our new man in Gibraltar, Wing Commander Greg Smith

Kettner and Jamie Elsby, both students at the English International College where Kate is a teacher – and Simon Ellingham, who has a lot of experience as an actor and director of musicals along the coast. The link with Salon Varietes does not stop there, however, as this production will move to Fuengirola after its San Pedro run. In the lead as the ghastly Mrs Taggart (a role made famous in a 1968 film by Bette Davis) is Carol Woolnoth. The rest of the cast are Kate Jackson, Lauren Kettner, James Elsby, Simon Ellingham and Paul Baker. As well as Mrs Taggart’s three sons there is a shrewish wife and a pregnant girlfriend. All of them are targets for the mother’s

appallingly nature.

At last it appears that there are regular films in English again at the La Trocha cinema in Coin and, this week it’s MONUMENTS MEN. The film will be shown today, Wednesday 26th and tomorrow, Thursday 27th at 8.20pm on both days. The film stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, John Goodman and Cate Blanchett and tells the story of a group of American soldiers sent to war time Germany to protect precious artworks, architecture and monument of cultural importance.

The film is not recommended for under 7s in Spain and is a 12A in the UK (the British Board of Film Classification warns that amongst other things this film includes scenes of people smoking!). The box office opens at 5:30pm on both days (sorry about the wrong time last week!) and tickets cannot be booked in advance.

As most people are aware it’s the 100th anniversary of the start of First World War this year, and TAPAS felt it would be appropriate to recognise the millions who were wounded during this conflict by doing something for our current armed forces. With this in mind they are holding a “Help for Heroes Entertainment Evening” on 19th July and all proceeds will go to the Charity. If you would like to perform something whether it’s Singing, Stand-up comedy, Monologue, Dance, Live

music, Magic, Sketches etc. individual or group . TAPAS will be holding auditions at 6.45 on Monday 31st March. The requirement is to present a practiced piece of entertainment of your choice. Applications are to be received by 8th March. Forms can be downloaded from the website www.tapassociety.com or email info@tapassociety.com The event will be sponsored by TAPAS but is open to anyone. To be directed by Leroy Lingwood and produced by Liz Haigh.

Mid February 2014 will be remembered by the Jardines area of Calahonda situated just off Avda d’Espana when the abandoned, unsightly and unfinished building that had blighted the landscape for 20 years was finally demolished following a campaign by local residents. John Horne, President of Jardines, hailed the demolition as a victory for common sense. He said the problem arose about 20 years ago when controversial approval was given by the local council at the time to build an apartment block alongside Jardines, Caserio and Horizontales. It was his view that the intended apartments breached the number of permitted dwellings on a plot, the site did not have proper right of way or access, the volume of the entire area was reached when Jardines and Caserio was built, it did not respect its own boundary and the intended development was on green belt land. Also due to the passage of time the intended structure no longer complied with current building regulations. And that was just to start with he added! Various litigation and approaches to previous administrations took place over a number of years

and in between the developer carried out a certain amount of work but with limited success. Over the years the site also changed hands but about 15 years ago the owner at the time abandoned the site leaving a skeleton shell. In fact as viewed from the west the sun rose between the floors and pillars so the site became known locally as Stonehenge. The site became overgrown, the steelwork rusted and concrete crumbled. It became a play area for local youths and it was incredible that an accident did not occur due to the building’s condition and deep water pit. The Jardines President enlisted the assistance of Councillor Mario Bravo to whom he gives his sincere thanks not only for the Jardines residents but the entire area as due to its elevation the building was seen over a considerable distance. He added that a large number of residents are very pleased in having the monstrosity removed.

What a difference...

submitted by John Horne, President.

Fond farewell to Ann Garton the News

Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Age Care’s Charity Shop volunteers gathered to say farewell to Ann Garton who resigned for health reasons as Deputy Manager of the Charity Shop in El Zoco. Ann has worked alongside Beverley Morland, Manager of the Age Care Charity Shop, for the last three years. Presenting Ann with flowers, Beverley said: “Ann has been my righthand woman. She has come in to work at the shop, sorting and pricing donations every day, come rain or shine! It is hard work, especially when it is voluntary and unpaid! We are very lucky to have such loyal volunteers – but we always need more!” Ann and hubby Steve came to Calahonda three years ago and she soon became involved in the

shop, becoming Deputy Manager. Ann said: “Since I started volunteering at the Charity Shop, I’ve made so many new friends. Volunteering is so rewarding.” When asked what she will do with her spare time, Ann said: “Put my feet up and enjoy some more time with Steve! But I will pop into the shop as many of the volunteers and regular customers have become friends.” David Mantle, President of Age Care, was also there to thank Ann and said: "Without the hard work of the Charity Shop volunteers, Age Care wouldn’t exist, thank you!” Age Care’s Charity Shop in El Zoco is open Monday to Friday, 10 am to 2 pm and donations of good quality bric-a-brac,

clothes, DVDs and books are always welcome. To see more photos, please go to our website: www.agecarecosta.org . with David The Dogman Unfortunately another child was killed by a dog so on our radio show we discussed the do’s and don’ts regarding children and pet dogs. As I write this article I feel I should again inform you that I do not trust any dog unsupervised with children irrespective of breed or age. Likewise I do not trust any child under 15 years with a dog unsupervised. Celia says:- Helping feral cats. Many of us feel sorry for the feral cats that hang about towns and resort areas scrounging food from passers-by or out of dustbins. Many of us therefore feed them. And once they are being properly fed, the cats are more likely to survive and produce more kittens. If you are interested in trying to make a real impact on the feral cat problem, you can get two useful free downloads from World Society for the Protection of Animals at http://www.wspa.org.uk/w spaswork/dogs/strayanim als/strayanimalresources. aspx Anna says:- All dogs need to use their brain No matter if you have a small or a big dog they all need training and they need to use their brain to be happy. There are many things you can do both indoors and outdoors. Apart from ordinary obedience training you can have your dog search for treats, or a family member. There are many great activation toys you can buy at veterinarians or at a pet store. Many of the toys you already have in the house can probably be used for lots of fun activities with you dog. If you want to learn more about this please contact me to find out when the next seminar about toys and mental stimulation is. Dogs are intelligent animals and it is a crime not to let them use their brain. Nazli says: My vet has asked me to bring a urine sample of my dog. How do I do this?? You will need a clean container. For the female dog you can use a ladle, so that you do not have to couch down when she squats, and pour the urine into the container. (do wash the ladle thoroughly afterwards) The male dog will sniff

and area, position himself and lift up his leg to urinate. Place the container in the flow and fill the container. (then wash your hands). And I say there must be safety around dogs and prevent dog bites. 1. Do not hug a dog, put your face close to his face or lie on him. Do sit beside your dog, rub his chest or scratch him on the side of the neck. 2. Do not play chase-me games with a dog. Do play hide and seek - where the dog has to find you or an object that you hide. 3. Do not play tug-of-war games with a dog. Do play fetch with the dog - teach the dog to trade the object for a treat so he won't try to tug. 4. Do not lean over or step over a dog. Do respect a dog's resting place - go around him or ask an adult to move the dog. 5. Do not bother a dog who is sleeping, eating, has a toy or bone, is hurt or has puppies. Do wait for the dog to come to you for attention. 6. Do not dress a dog up in play clothes. Do dress up your stuffed animals. 7. Do not hit a dog or poke him with a stick. Do be gentle with dogs. 8. Do not pull a dog's ears, tail or fur. Do scratch the dog's chest or the side of her neck - most dogs enjoy this. 9. Do not stick fingers or hands into the dog's crate. Do ask an adult to let the dog out of the crate if you want to pet her. 10. Do not play in the dog's sleeping area. Do play with the dog - toss a treat in his sleeping area - dog goes in to get it - dog comes back out - toss another treat in etc. (with adult supervision). 11. If your dog does not welcome you with wagging and panting leave him alone. Do wait for the dog to come to you for attention. 12. If your dog gets too rough or excited, be a – TREE- until he gets bored and goes away. 13. Do not run and shout around a dog that is not in a crate. Do be calm around dogs; involve the dog in an activity such as chewing on a bone or playing fetch so he doesn't feel that he needs to chase you to have fun.

Watch out for flying leeks... it’s St David’s Day this weekend

This Saturday is the day to remember St. David, patron saint of Wales and all its people..

Saint David (Welsh: Dewi Sant) was born towards the end of the 5th century. He was a scion of the royal house of

Ceredigion, and founded a Celtic monastic community at Glyn Rhosyn (The Vale of Roses) on the western headland of Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro), at the spot where St David's Cathedral stands today.

His foundation at Glyn Rhosin became an important Christian shrine, and the most important centre in Wales. The date of Saint David's death is recorded as 1

March, but the year is uncertain – possibly 588. As his tearful monks prepared for his death Saint David uttered these words: "Brothers be ye constant. The yoke which with single mind ye have taken, bear ye to the end; and whatsoever ye have seen with me and heard, keep and fulfil."

For centuries, 1 March has been a national festival. Saint David was

recognised as a national patron saint at the height of Welsh resistance to the Normans.

The 17th-century diarist Samuel Pepys noted how Welsh celebrations in London for Saint David's Day would spark wider counter celebrations amongst their English neighbours: life-sized effigies of Welshmen were symbolically lynched, and by the 18th century the custom had arisen of confectioners producing "taffies"—gingerbread figures baked in the shape of a Welshman riding a goat—on Saint David's Day. Saint David's Day is not a national holiday in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Similarly in the United States of America, it has regularly been celebrated, although it is not an official holiday. It is invariably celebrated by Welsh societies throughout the world with dinners, parties, and eisteddfodau (recitals and concerts).

In 1485, Henry VII of England, whose ancestry was partly Welsh. His green and white banner, with a red dragon, was adapted in 1959 to become the new Flag of Wales. The Flag of Saint David, though, is a golden cross on a black background: this was not originally part of the symbolism of Henry VII of England.

This Friday 28th February The Soaks play once again at Pógs in Fuengirola. This four piece Málaga band is coordinated and talented, lead singer Marcos Rojas is of noticeably good voice, confidently performing covers of the challenging music of Queen. With accomplished lead guitarist David Alcazar, bass guitarist Juan Rojas and drummer Sergio Ramos they deliver more than fair justice to a good cross section of music from The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steppenwolf, Eagles, Chuck Berry, Oasis, U2, Elvis Presley and Simon & Garfunkel. Soaks also feature popular Spanish hits of a similar genre, making them the ideal band for the Pógs Día de Andalucia celebration.

Mr. Nobody

DVD NEW RELEASE

Release date: February 25th

Director: Jaco Van Dormael Starring: Jared Leto, Diane Kruger, Rhys Ifans This science fiction drama focuses on the last man alive on Earth, the 118-year old Nemo Nobody. With the aid of a psychiatrist, Nobody tries to remember memories of his life he contends he cannot recall. Under hypnotherapy, he is able to recall himself as a nine year old affected by the divorce of

his parents, as a fifteen year old teenager falling in love for the first time, and as a 34-year old man.

As he reviews his past, he considers how different his life might have been had he made other choices, ultimately unable to distinguish which life of his was the one he really lived and

Once it becomes clear that German defeat is inevitable the team of experts, led by Frank Stokes, are put into uniform and sent into war torn Europe, where they rescue millions of artefacts from destruction and theft at the hands of the Nazis. Director: Greg 'Freddy' Camalier Starring: Gregg Allman, Bono, Clarence Carter The story of the distinctive musical style produced in Muscle Shoals, Ala. in the 1960s is documented.

A single recording studio first achieves success with singer Percy Sledge. Atlantic Records then records hit songs there by Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin. The soulful vocals integrate seamlessly with the rhythm and blues grooves of the permanent

studio musicians. After a business disagreement, Atlantic Records endorses the construction of a separate studio nearby.

The second studio is able to maintain the area’s momentum and records several hit songs, including “Brown Sugar” by the Rolling Stones. Interviews of artists who recorded there are interspersed with content narration and vintage

This is an emotional time for you when you are likely to be far more receptive and sensitive to atmospheres and enviromental changes. Small things can trigger memories that can start a chain reaction of feelings within. You will need more “you” time this week so make sure that you give yourself some space to recharge. In some areas patience is the key so do not give up at the first hurdle, perhaps the time is not quite right but soon it maybe. You may be surprised this week as differents routes start to appear that you can now consider and although you had your heart set on one way of moving forward it does not hurt to have a plan b. A lot more will be revealed as the week progresses, someone you are close to could step in and help you take this further than you ever could going it alone.

Keep the approach original and unpredictable and you can’t go wrong this week, this is not the time to keep quiet, but to speak out directly the “truth” as you see it. Your intuition is spot on and serving you well right now and you have no problem in questioning authority to find answers. Your sharp mind will let you know what you need to sort out with another and your keen observations will allow you to get there. Sometimes it comes to a point where you can’t fight everyone’s battles for them and you realise that you do not have to fight all confrontations and things that appear like battles in your own life either. Some things you can just let go of as they are just not worth the energy it would take for the response you would get inreturn. However, nurture the things that hold the most meaning for you and they will nurture you back tenfold. It is time to set things straight, catch your breath and take the time to think things through. You finding your way through the latest maze but this time you are doing it with the experience of having been in a similar before. Once something triggers that enthusiastic energy within you there is no stopping you and nothing can steer you off course, especially if it comes from your heart. Listen to your inner voice and charge forth. A bridge that is broken has been playing on your mind and you will feel compelled to take steps to repair and rebuild that link. Perhaps it is time to clear the air and start afresh. It becomes obvious this week as to who loves for who you are and those who love being with you purely for what you can give them. Some honest exchanges are perhaps on the cards so that a stronger relationship can exist in the future.

LIBRA

At the moment these are poignant days for you, there is so much going on and major issues are up for consideration and need you to take some kind of action. the areas you need to progress and move things on will become obvious and you will have some kind of external pressure for you to take possitive steps towards achieving what needs to be done. Others are watching you right now September 23rd - and your reputation is also in the limelight. October 22nd

If only you were aware of your own power you would understand how others react to your magnetic energy. You feel things with far more intensity than some the other signs and this brings far more depth and power to any present moment because of the weight behind it. This week though what you really need is a good laugh and having some light hearted fun will do you the world of good. By the weekend the weight of a responsibility you have been shouldering eases.

You are likely to be slightly wired this week and any hint of unpredictability can seem to rock your boat far easier than usual. Even though you are the one of the social signs of the zodiac, you too need an element of time alone to ponder and contemplate where things are going and what it is you really want in it all. The unknown, the unexplored, these issues can be asking you to question just how much you wish to embrace, when the home fires are calling you. The “builder knoweth best” and this line applies to you - right now is all about the building on what you have achieved in the past and also building for the future. One step at a time will get you there, slowly, cautiously but accurately and definite as you place each foot firmly in front of each other on the climb up the mountain. As each foot is done with such surety there is little that will be able to rock you from your spot. Help from a trusted friend will be welcomed. Many times you have been known as the objective one, the one that does not get emotionally involved and uses their wit and mental pace to navigate through stormy waters. Your apparent objectivity and detachment, however, is a natural defence mechanism that prevents you from getting hurt. This week you are being asked to take an emotional risk, surrender and slip into those waters of feeling, there is an opportunity to deepen a connection with another. There is some emotional relief coming your way, something that has been causing you great worry may soon be water under the bridge; soon an event occurs to calm the waters of concern. Your faith is restored in humanity and an old friend or connection could surprise you with a loving gesture of support. This is a period of sifting out, sorting out and figuring out, so be open to see another side of someone, a change of attitude may be a pleasant surprise.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

With St David’s day this weekend, Welsh cakes are a traditional tea-time treat that are really easy to make. Eat them warm from the stove, or store in an airtight container for up to a week.

Welsh Cakes Ingredients:

(Serves 4)

• 225g/8oz self-raising flour • 10g/4oz salted butter, diced • 85g/3oz caster sugar, plus extra for dusting • handful of sultanas • 1 free-range egg, beaten • milk, if needed • extra butter, for greasing Directions 1. Sift the flour into a bowl and add the diced butter. 2. Rub with your fingertips, or pulse in a food processor, until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. 3. Add the sugar, sultanas and beaten egg and mix well to form a ball of dough, using a splash of milk if needed. 4. Roll the dough out on a floured board to a thickness of about 5mm/½in.

5. Cut into rounds with a 7.5–10cm/3-4in plain cutter. 6. Rub a bakestone or heavy iron griddle with butter, wipe away the excess and place on the hob until it is heated through. 7. Cook the Welsh cakes a few at a time for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until goldenbrown. 8. Remove from the griddle and dust with caster sugar while still warm.

WEDNESDAY, February 26th2014

Today in class we were discussing the difference between muy and mucho. Usually muy means very and mucho means a lot Muy - very (usually) María es una niña muy interesante - María is a very interesting girl. Este edificio es muy antiguo - This building is very old. Los padres de Ana son muy jovenes - Ana's parents are very young. Durante la semana tengo muy poco tiempo libre - During the week I have very little free time.

Mucho - a lot (usually) You can use mucho after a verb to say what is happening a lot. Juan canta mucho - John sings a lot Yo estudio mucho - I study a lot Nosotros bailamos mucho - We dance a lot Ellos aprenden mucho - They learn a lot.

Muchísimo is used in the same way but simply means a VERY great deal. Los niños lloran muchísimo - the children cry an awful lot. Alfonso bebe muchísimo - Alfonso drinks a heck of a lot. Now for the grammarians out there. If you want to say "a lot of" you have to know if the thing you are describing is masculine or feminine or singular or plural. Actually it is usually pretty simple as often the words end in the same letter or letters. Tengo mucho dinero - I have a lot of money. Tienes muchos libros - You have a lot of books. Tenemos muchas amigas - We have lots of female friends. Fácil. ¿No? - Easy, isn't it?

Hasta la próxima - Until next time. Valerie

Dear Sue,

Dear Barbara

Why do I have dark circles under my eyes? Is there anything I can do about it? Emily

Dear Emily,

Tiredness is a big factor but it can also be genetic or a result of allergies. Make sure you get enough sleep and use a soothing eye gel to help reduce darkness. Remember that the under eye area is very thin and easily damaged by rough handling. Pigmentation is also a factor and may be very resistant to treatment but it

responds slowly to Vitamin A, so it maybe advisable to try increasing your intake of this.

If you think it may be connected to an allergy get tested. Sun damage can also cause dark circles under the eyes.

Dear Calvin,

I am having trouble with an itchy scalp. I can’t see anything obvious, but I do scratch my scalp which makes it sore.

Try using a teatree shampoo and conditioner such as Paul Mitchells teatree range, there is a lemon sage shampoo and conditioner for thickening the hair lavender and mint for moisturisng and pure teatree for normal use teatree has antiseptic properties and will gently sooth the scalp so hopefully stop annoying irritation. Dear Sue,

I have had the same spot for a month, will it ever heal?

Dear Jayne,

In some cases, the contents of swollen sebaceous gland could take weeks or even months to surface, and it could take just as long for the spot to heal afterwards. Exfoliation or a good facial will help. Please remember to keep your hands off, picking the spot will make it more obvious, you will have to live with it for longer, and it could get infected, leaving a scar. Dear Calvin,

I have recently been dieting but have noticed my hair has suffered. Could you give me an idea what foods I should be eating to

The “mum jeans” were ridiculed not long ago... They were the beloved wear of the schoolrun twenty years ago

… and they’re about to make a comeback in your wardrobe so check out your stored stuff first

The kind of jeans that were once adored by thousands of mums in their late 30s and 40s – otherwise known as “mum jeans” and laughed at by the more trendy teenagers who think it’s cool to show off their knickers while trying to hold up their hipsters – are back with a bang and taking off big time in the States. Topshop carries a version of the high waisted jeans with long pockets at $66 a pair while Urban Outfitters are selling a cropped leg version for $59. In December, Gwyneth Paltrow was strutting her

stuff in a pair in Hollywood and Elle Fanning admitted to New York magazine that she favours a baggier look, “sort of like a mom jean.” “Fashion is experiencing a wave of ‘90s nostalgia— lots of crop tops, plaid, and layering — and mom jeans right fit right in,” Stephanie Trong, co-editor in chief of Fashionista.com said. “But let’s be clear: These aren’t everyday jeans, and they won’t necessarily flatter your body; however, they do poke fun at fashion and make a playful statement.”

Dare to try it? Proceed with caution — and definitely wear them with confidence. She added that the added advantage to looking good in a light blue version of these jeans is that you don’t have to be stick thin as the higher, cinched in waist accentuates curves rather than hipsters that we all know, if they’re too tight will give you a “muffin top” and they tend to make your legs look longer. At this time of year, team them with a pastel coloured fairly loose weave cotton sweater or go for the

marine look with a blue and white striped T-shirt tucked in and with a gorgeous belt to emphasise your waist. A bit “thick round the middle? No matter, just leave sweaters and T shirts loose but, don’t be tempted to wear them long as it’ll only shorten the illusion of long legs. If the weather gets a little cool, steal one of your partners voluminous shirts or a leather jacket to wear over the top. The new old look is going to be a winner this year - look in your stored stuff before spending a fortune!

Ear biters found not Not a success for once guilty at trial During a trial at Newcastle Crown Court where two men were being accused of biting part of the ear of Casualty and Game of Thrones actor Clive Mantle, one of the accused, Philip McGilvray, 33, described the actor as a “big monster” who pinned him to the floor in a late night row about noise. Although he admitted biting the actor, he claimed his actions were in self defence after Mr Mantle tackled them in the corridor outside their rooms at a Travelodge hotel. The defendant said: "It was like being hit by a car. I was on my back and Mr Mantle was straight on top of me," adding that he believed the actor was trying to kill him. It was revealed that McGilvray has a previous conviction for assault and has been in trouble for fighting plus he said that his brother had been stabbed to death in the street. Mr McGilvray said he felt "disgusted" and "ashamed" with himself, having once suffered a similar injury. When he

Brian Barkworth

Thank you for printing my letter re 902 numbers. My only criticism is that I did not approve of your choice of photo you put with it. By inference it was me, and anyone who knows me would think I'd had plastic surgery that had gone wrong. I probably wouldn't have moaned if you'd used a photo of Tom Cruise or George Clooney!

Perhaps a short statement of retraction is not too much to ask for?

of blossom and those of us that are lucky enough to have a garden can see the signs of bulbs poking their heads through the earth that was their blanket throughout the winter. If you live in the “campo” you’ll have noticed all the baby lambs and goats running along behind their mums bleeting their little heads off and there’s loads of salad plants, summer bulbs, shrubs and flowering plants in stock at the garden centre. I hear people complaining about the way things have become in some areas of living in Spain but, seeing extensive flooding in the UK and wildfires in Australia, will I be going anywhere else in the foreseeable future? Absolutely not! My arthritis and rheumatism aren’t nearly so bad and I get out and about meeting people here, not stuck in my house spending a fortune on keeping hypothermia at bay!

It’s been almost 2 years since Mars was in our skies, but now the red planet is back with a vengeance! ars is the fourth planet out from the Sun and is the second smallest planet in the solar system, only Mercury is smaller. Its nickname ‘the red planet’ is quite apt as the planet really is a vivid shade of red. The red colour is caused by iron oxide on the surface. Iron oxide is better known as rust and to cause rust you need to have water. t’s this fact that has always intrigued us about Mars; the presence of water is paramount to life. At the end of the 19th century H.G. Wells published his ‘War of the Worlds’ novel that told of Martians invading Earth. It was around this time that the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli announced that he had observed ‘canals’ running across the surface of Mars. The word canal implies an intelligently constructed feature for carrying water. Schiaparelli’s ‘observations’ were supported by the eminent American astronomer Percival Lowell. ark areas on the surface ‘must be’ areas of vegetation and the ‘canals’ must be bringing the water from the frozen ice caps to the arid equatorial regions. Cultivated crops on another planet! The world went Martian crazy. Anything from little green men to terrifying, laser beam firing, Tripods wreaking death and destruction on Earth. The age of sci-fi had been born. t turns out they were all wrong. No one has seen Schiaparelli’s canals ever since they were first reported. The dark areas are not vegetation and the frozen ice caps are made from frozen carbon dioxide not frozen water. All were wrong except for the water business. There are currently three rovers crawling across the surface of Mars. Along with 2 satellites in orbit around the planet taking very high definition images of the surface, they have all found evidence of frozen water trapped just below the surface. This water occasionally seeps out and runs in little streams. Features found all across the surface add evidence to the theory that millions of years ago Mars was a very wet planet with oceans and seas. he rovers therefore are not looking for little green men; instead they are searching for the most basic forms of life. Even the correct chemical conditions for life to have begun will suffice, but alas after over 10 years of searching we can almost confidently answer David Bowie’s question ‘Is there life on Mars?’ with ‘No David, there isn’t’. ecause Mars is further out from the Sun than we are then a year on Mars takes 686 days or just less than 2 years. But of course we are also

moving so the time it takes for Mars to appear in the same point in our sky is more like 780 days. And as we overtake Mars on the inside track -so to speak- a strange thing happens in Mars’s path across the sky. s seen from Earth all the outer planets appear to move from right to left against the back ground stars. But as the Earth begins to pass them on our inside track then for a short period the outer planet appears to move backwards travelling from left to right. Then after we have passed them by they once again resume their ‘normal’ direction of travel. This is known as retrograde motion and is quite easy to understand. Imagine being in a car beginning to overtake another car on the motorway. As you come up on the other car at first it is still moving forward against the background but as you pass it then it appears to be moving backwards against the background. or the last few weeks we have been closing in on Mars but on Saturday 1st March we reach the point were Mars will change direction and begin its retrograde motion. The Earth will be directly between The Sun and Mars (opposition) on April 8th then Mars will be at its closest to Earth, rising at sunset, be due south at midnight and setting at sunrise. At the moment Mars rises at around 11pm. To find it, follow the curve of the handle of The Plough down toward the bright red star Arcturus then continue the line to Spica. Mars is just to the left of Spica.

MotoGP champion Marc Marquez breaks leg 'Marc Marquez will certainly miss next week's Sepang MotoGP test and possibly the following week in Phillip Island' MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez broke his lower right leg during a dirt-track training accident in Lleida, west of Barcelona, on Wednesday afternoon. Marquez was immediately taken to the Universitario Quirón Dexeus Hospital where Dr. Xavier Mir treated what is officially described as 'a spiral fracture of the distal third of his right fibula'. "It was a really unfortunate accident that could happen to anyone at anytime," said Marquez. "I was rushed to hospital and Dr. Mir treated me, thankfully there was no ligament damage and it seems like a clean break." Dr. Mir confirmed: "The results showed no ligament damage or dislocation and no need to proceed with surgery. I expect he will need 3-4 weeks to fully recover."

'Marc has already started rehabilitation with magnetic therapy', said a Repsol Honda Team statement. 'He will remain non-weight bearing for two weeks, meaning he will certainly miss next week's

Sepang test and possibly the following week in Phillip Island, Australia. 'Full recovery is expected for the ( season opening ) Qatar MotoGP race on 23 March.' 21-year-old Marquez who won the MotoGP crown at his first attempt was fastest on all three

days of the opening Sepang test earlier this month, including a new unofficial all-time lap record. Marquez claimed six wins last season - and fought for victory to the final turn at Silverstone, despite dislocating his shoulder a few hours earlier. The Spaniard joins PBM riders Michael Laverty and Broc Parkes in missing next week's second Sepang test. Along with tweets from his fellow competitors Cal Crutchlow, Bradley Smith, Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo, there was another from ex F1 driver Mark Webber, @AussieGrit: For a tough cookie like @marcmarquez93 a little fibula break isn't going to hold him back much,he'll have the gas twisted back on in no time.

Rosberg best in Bahrain On the final day of preseason testing at Bahrain, Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg was the driver setting the pace. The German's lap of 1.33.283 seconds was the fastest of the day and 1.627secs quicker than any other team's best. McLaren's Jenson Button was second fastest on the day, 1.674secs behind Rosberg, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen third, 3.435secs adrift. Meawhile world champions Red Bull were continuing to struggle with reliability issues, they have done approximately just a sixth of the mileage of Mercedes, and their fastest lap is more than six seconds slower than Rosberg's. A gearbox failure put a stop to Daniel Riccardo's Friday running, and that was followed by a power-

unit problem on Saturday morning, with the Australian completing just 15 laps compared to Rosberg's 89. The problems for Red Bull and Renault are with the new turbo hybrid engine brought in by F1 this year, and the team continue to struggle with the car itself. Renault's problems centre on the energyrecovery system, which they are struggling to run at full capacity.

Rosberg said the team had worked initially on qualifying preparation and then on simulating a race distance. "It's been a good day," Rosberg said. "We were doing lower-fuel stuff in the morning, really getting into the qually rhythm and finding a balance for that. That was working well.

New technology makes revised Focus one of Ford’s most advanced cars Ford Motors unveiled it's Focus compact hatchback at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday, adding sleek fresh styling, new technology and a more premium feel to the company's No. 2 seller in Europe.

Ford of Europe CEO Stephen Odell said the changes make the Focus one of the automaker's most advanced vehicles to date.

The revised Focus is now "one of the most sophisticated mass-market vehicles" on sale globally, Odell said at the car's presentation at the Mobile World Congress. The car has its auto show debut in Geneva on March 4.

The Focus has been styled with slimmer headlights a restyled bumper, and, the trapezoidal grille as found in other Ford models such as the Fiesta subcompact. The Focus is Ford's secondlargest seller in Europe behind the Fiesta, but European sales of the Focus last year slipped 7 percent

The car's upgraded powertrain lineup for Europe includes a new 150hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine and a new 1.5-litre diesel. Ford claims the 120-hp version of the new diesel engine mated to its Powershift automatic transmission is 19 percent more fuel efficient than the equivalent engine on sale today. Ford will also offer a Focus with a 1.0-litre petrol engine with CO2 emissions of 99 grams per kilometer. Ford says this is the only non-hybrid petrol engine with emissions below 99g/km offered in Europe.

The Focus will offer the smartphone-connected Sync 2, Ford's latest in-car connectivity system with a new 8-inch touchscreen and improved voice control.

LEO’S AUTOS

In addition, the carmaker said the European Focus will be the first Ford globally to offer the company's new handsfree Perpendicular Parking technology, which helps drivers reverse into spaces side-to-side with other cars. New sensors can warn drivers of oncoming cars while reversing out of parking spots, and the current Active City Stop automatic braking function now works at speeds up to 50kph (31 mph) instead of 30kph.

"We've responded to a clear customer desire for more simplicity inside the car, creating a clearer visual connection between the key components and significantly reducing the number of buttons in the cabin," Ford of Europe design head Martin Smith said in a statement. The face-lifted Focus will go on sale in Europe in the second half of the year.

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips Poker Tells

One of the key skills most good poker players have is the ability to read their opponents at the table. That is why you hear so much about “poker tells.” A “tell” is any physical reaction, kind of behavior, or habit that gives (or tells) the other players information about your hand. If you learn the most common tells, you can not only watch your own behavior to make sure your body language isn’t telling all your secrets, but also watch for the habits and tics in the poker players you’re at the table with. If you can accurately read your opponent’s tells, you’ll make the right decisions against them more often and win more money. Everyone has their own unique tics and tells, and it’s great to watch individuals and pick up on their unique tells. Luckily, there are also a few involuntary and common tells that you can watch for even the first time you sit down with someone. As a general rule, remember that when a player acts strong, he’s probably weak, and when a player acts weak, he's probably got a really strong hand.

.

pretending that he’s not excited about his cards – but he is.

.

Shaking Hands During a hand. If you notice a player’s hands are shaking as she places her bet, she probably has gotten a really, really good hand. Perhaps the nuts.

.

Rapid Breathing. Some players can control the shakes, but it's harder to control the automatic heart-racing that comes when you see pocket aces or hit the flop really hard. If you can see a player's chest visibly rising and falling, they have an excellent hand.

.

Sighing and Shrugging. If a player makes a show of sighing or shrugging, and says things like “Oh, I guess I’ll call,” or even “Why am I calling?” he probably is overacting and is trying to hide a big hand.

.

Glancing at Chips After Looking at Hole Cards. When a player looks down and sees strong hole or pocket cards, she may glance over at her chips to see just how much she can bet.

.

Poker Tells that Say "I Poker Tells that Say "I Have a Good Hand!" Have a Weak Hand!"

Acting Uninterested in a Hand While Still in It. This is usually a sign of a strong hand. The player is

Staring Down Other Players. If an opponent is staring you down, he’s trying to represent strength. Usually though,

he has a weak hand – he might have something, but it’s something that can be beaten or drawn out on.

.

Holding Breath Often. inexperienced players will hold their breath if they are bluffing.

Poker Tells that Say "I Have a Drawing Hand."

.

Checking Hole Cards After a Flop. If the flop shows the possibility of giving someone a flush or straight draw, watch for people re-checking their hole cards. They’re checking to see if they have a piece of it – whether that black Ace was a spade or a club. The player doesn’t have the flush or straight at that point, because if they did, they wouldn’t have to check, but she is seeing if she has a draw to it.

.

Taking a Long Time Before Calling a Bet. If a player looks into the pot and seems to be doing some calculating in his head, he probably is. He’s most likely figuring out the pot odds to see if it’s worth it to try and catch the cards he needs to complete his drawing hand.

.

A final note: more experienced players may give off false tells, so the first thing to read about other players is if they’re novices or pros.

The Club Handicap Singles competition was held last week having been postponed because of bad weather in the Autumn. The tournament began in very cold and windy conditions (for the Costa del Sol!) but the last 2 days turned out to be warm and sunny, making it much more comfortable for both players and spectators. The handicap committee had done a good job as we saw many close matches amongst both experienced and less experienced members, with a few surprises along the way. The semi-finals provided two intriguing matches with Denis Hanley up against Jeff Turner (playing in his first semi-final since joining Miraflores) in an all Welsh match and Esther Gatter (Ladies' Singles champion) playing Derek Carr. In the first match Denis was quickly out of the blocks accumulating a 7-1 lead after 4 ends, Jeff fought back to lead 12-8 after 13 ends, but Denis then moved up a gear taking 14 shots from the last 7 ends to win the match 22-15. The other

match saw Derek take an early lead with Esther pulling The Tigers and Lions league teams back to take the lead 7-6 after 8 score 2 more shots than ends, Derek then raised his Denis to win. He held his game giving Esther little nerve and in a dramatic last opportunity and eventually end while he was 2 shots down moved the jack back winning comfortably 21-9. with a brilliant shot to score The final promised an the 3 points he needed to intriguing contest and the win the match. Club president Derek large group of spectators were not disappointed with applauded both finalists on high quality consistent an excellent display of bowling throughout. Denis bowling where sadly as had the edge in the early always there had to be a part of the match and had loser. succeeded in opening up a By Grant Frost gap of 5 shots to lead 11-6 after 11 ends, but the 12th end was to prove a turning point with Derek gaining 4 shots to get within reach. Denis fought back again to restore the 5 point gap and then the pendulum swung again enabling Derek to draw level at 15-15. Derek continued to bowl with great consistency but the match Winner Derek Carr left, with was in the balance until the runner-up Denis Hanley end as Derek needed to

Team GB get Downing Street reception

Sports Flash

Medal-winning Team GB athletes who competed in the Sochi Winter Olympics have been recognised for their achievements at a special Downing Street reception. The team won medals in four events during the Games. The medal haul equalled the record achieved by the Great Britain team at the inaugural Winter Olympics in 1924. Prime Minister David Cameron told the winners they were "brilliant", saying: "You have inspired me." He is pictured with Curling medallist Claire Hamilton.

Porte seals Ruta del Sol second spot Richie Porte wrapped up second place overall at Ruta del Sol after Team Sky looked to seize the initiative on the final stage. There seemed to be more Guardia on motorbikes than there were racing cyclists as the race came through Coin. And for all my searching I couldn’t see Bradley Wiggins, it was only later when looking at the race gallery that it became apparent why I hadn’t spotted him, Wiggo had grown a full beard.

Bradley Wiggins

Sky’s Richie Porte the Tasmanian, was able to emerge from a high-speed finale as the race burst onto the coast in Fuengirola and defend his strong general classification position with the help of his Team Sky team-mates.

Porte finished the race 31 seconds behind winner Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and was able to also defend the two-second margin back to fellow podium finisher Luis Leon Sanchez (Caja RuralSeguros RGA). The team had looked to set things up for Edvald Boasson Hagen on the final stage but a narrow

The stage win however went to Moreno Hofland (Belkin). Sky’s Boasson Hagen crossed the line seventh while 10th was enough to see Valverde take the red jersey for the third year in succession. Report and photos courtesy of www.teamsky.com

Derby point for Malaga SPORTING Almeria 0 - 0 Malaga

After the disappointing defeat against Real Sociedad, Malaga had a difficult derby visit to Almeria. Malaga started brightly and after 5 minutes Sergio Sanchez had the ball in the net turning home the ball from a Duda freekick, only to be flagged offside. Malaga worked hard but but it was a poor game as both teams failed to find a clear opening. Trujilo forced Malaga's keeper Caballero into a great save as he got on the end of a Verza free kick. The second half was not a lot better, Caballero

made another great save from Torsigileri only for the offside flag to be up again. Almeria had a late chance but Trujilo hooked his volley over when Caballero failed to clear his lines with a punch under pressure. So just a point for Malaga, which against a team who's home form has been impressive might prove invaluable. Next weekends game at home against Valladolid Saturday at 4pm could be the most important game of the season so far. Three points would give Malaga breathing space over their relegation rivals. Williams recruit Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley Williams have recruited Rob Smedley from Ferrari as part of an overhaul of the team's engineering department. The 40-year-old, who has become known for his amusing radio communications with Felipe Massa, is to lead Williams's race operations. Smedley's new role as head of vehicle performance is more senior than his position at Ferrari, who failed in an attempt to persuade him to stay. Massa has also joined Williams from Ferrari as Valtteri Bottas' team-mate. Smedley will officially join Williams prior to the Bahrain Grand Prix.

FOOTBALL

Penalty Shootout England manager Roy Hodgson will consider using a psychologist at the World Cup in Brazil to ensure players are better prepared for penalties. Six of the last 10 major tournaments England have qualified for have ended in defeat via spot-kicks. "We have some confident penaltytakers, but others less confident," Hodgson told Sky Sports. "It's how we get to them. We need to know they are as well prepared as they can be." Hodgson, who was in charge when England were beaten on penalties by Italy at Euro 2012, believes a professional sports psychologist could help his players handle the pressure of a shootout.
