The international community must act on evidence that crimes against humanity are being committed in North Korea, a long-awaited report by the UN's Human Rights Council said on Monday. It said North Koreans had suffered "unspeakable atrocities", and that those responsible, including leader Kim Jong-un, must face justice. The UN panel of experts that prepared the report said Mr Kim had failed to respond to an advance copy of the report, and a letter which warned him he could be held personally responsible for abuses. Testimony given by defectors included an account of a woman forced to drown her own baby,

children imprisoned from birth and starved, and families tortured for watching a foreign soap opera.

Michael Kirby, chairman of the independent Commission of Inquiry, said the report "calls for attention from the international community". He said: "At the end of the Second World War so many people said 'if only we had known ... if only we had known

the wrongs that were done in the countries of the hostile forces'."

He told a news conference at UN headquarters in Geneva: "Well, now the international community does know. There will be no excusing of failure of action because we didn't know." "Too many times in this building there are reports and no action. Well this is

The report is one of the most detailed and devastating ever published by the United Nations. It says the "gravity, scale and nature" of the allegations "reveal a State that does not have any parallel in the contemporary world".

The report says that in North Korea, there is "an

Meetings to make a difference

k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

This coming Friday, 21st February at 10:30am we are holding another of our information meetings at the Carolina restaurant just outside Alhaurin el Grande on the road towards Alhaurin de La Torre. They have proved very popular in the past and give you information on all your financial planning from Speed Finance, the law in respect of inheritance taxes and lots of other subjects pertaining to living here in Spain from De Cotta Law, and what The News can do for you from their Help Desk in respect of problems with telephones, electricity and any other problems that fall through your door, plus we can change car ownership details and all manner of dealings with Town Halls etc. Avalon will be there again to tell you about their funeral plans and last, but not least, Compass will attend and tell you how to get into and navigate your way around the Spanish healthcare system.

The other meeting is to be held on Monday 24th February at Venta Los Arcos on the Coin to Cartama road at 10:30am. This is a very important meeting for locals that live in the Coin, Alhaurin and Cartama areas as it will be discussing setting up neighbourhood watch groups to try and combat all the burglaries that have been taking place in campo houses in these areas. The meeting is free entry with plenty of parking and is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Geoff Saltar, President of Vecinos Cooperando and John Sutton and Javier Florido from De Cotta Law will be there to advise us on what we can do, and how to go about it. Come along and help to make our areas safer – as they say, it’s better to be a Meercat on guard than an Ostrich with our head in the sand. Let all your friends and neighbours know about these meetings and let’s all make a difference to our lives and where we live.

North Korea declined to participate in the panel's investigation, and said it "categorically and totally rejects" the findings.

In a two-page statement sent to Reuters from its diplomatic mission in Geneva, it said:

"The DPRK [North Korea] once again makes it clear that the 'human rights violations' mentioned in the so-called 'report' do not exist in our country." Mr Kirby said there was "a very good way to

answer the many charges and complaints – and that is to allow the door to be opened" to the international community so they could see the situation for themselves.

Although this information has been in the public domain for years, the UN inquiry is the highest-profile international attempt to investigate the claims.

South Korea welcomed the report, saying it hoped it would "raise the international community's awareness", while the US said it "clearly and unequivocally documents the brutal reality" of the Pyongyang regime.

However China, North Korea's only ally, said it would "not help resolve the human rights situation".

The report will be formally presented next month, when the Human Rights Council will decide which recommendations to support. But it remains unclear what action will result. Observers say China would be likely to block any attempt to refer the North to the International Criminal Court, and an ad-hoc tribunal, like those set up for Rwanda, Sierra Leone or Cambodia, would appear unlikely without co-operation from elements within the country.

Businessmen reject Catalan call The main Spanish and Catalan employers' associations on Monday declined to get involved in the Catalan separatist process and asked politicians on both sides for more talks to guarantee the "stability" that businesses need to operate. The statements by leaders of Spain's CEOE and Catalonia's Foment del Treball came in response to last week's call from Catalan regional premier Artur Mas for businesses to participate

in the independence drive he is promoting. But Foment del Treball leader Joaquim Gay de Montellà and CEOE chief Juan Rosell said that their purpose to create jobs and wealth, and that they will continue to do so, regardless of the political debate going on around them.

Rosell called on politicians to talk it over: "It is necessary to know how to explain to the rest of Spain that there is a problem in Catalonia, and to try to solve it through

dialogue, dialogue and more dialogue. We businesspeople can help get them talking, but little else. We're here to get companies working and hiring. That is our job and our goal."

The European Commission has said that an independent Catalonia would have to reapply for admission into the EU, and several business leaders have already spoken out against the advisability of secession.

Migrants rush border fence into Melilla

Half a ton of Beatles wigs were flown to the US

Around 150 irregular immigrants managed to scale the fence separating Melilla from Moroccan territory on Monday.

They were part of a group of more than 250 subSaharan Africans who attempted to cross at around 6.30 am in the area known as Villa Pajares, located between two border checkpoints.

The migrants who made it across divided into groups and spread out through the city. A spokesman for the Melilla regional government said: “During the jump, immigrants acted in a highly coordinated manner to avoid the antiintruder system,”. It was the first mass attempt to storm the fence since February 6th, when 15 migrants drowned at the Ceuta border crossing after the Guardia Civil fired rubber bullets towards them. The opposition Socialists have formally requested in Parliament that the government turn over the “unedited recording of events between 4.30 am and 09.30 am on the morning of the 6th,” at the Ceuta border. The Attorney’s Office in Ceuta has also asked the Guardia Civil to hand over “all the video material” that may exist.

Both petitions are based on the belief that the coordinated crossing attempt by around 200 sub-Saharans was fully recorded, since the Guardia has already distributed an edited version recorded on cameras located in a different area from where the tragedy took place. Guardia Civil director general Arsenio Fernández de Mesa said he was unaware of any more video footage than that which has already been released.

Both the government's delegate in Ceuta, Francisco Antonio González Pérez, and Guardia Civil spokesmen have repeatedly insisted that the drownings occurred 200 metres from the Ceuta breakwater, in Moroccan territory, where the migrants who jumped into the sea were “corralled” by Moroccan police standing on the shore.

Last week, the European Commission said it would ask the Spanish government why the authorities had used rubber bullets to deter the migrants, after Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Diaz admitted before a parliamentary committee that the Guardia had fired their anti-riot weapons in the direction of the migrants, saying it was necessary given their "belligerent behaviour".

Meanwhile, police sources have claimed there are around 30,000 would-be migrants from sub-Saharan Africa camped out in Morocco, hoping to enter Spain via Ceuta and Melilla, putting the two Spanish enclaves under "enormous migratory pressure". The police sources said there are "well-structured criminal organisations," dedicated to transporting and channelling the thousands of immigrants who are trying to reach Europe. They said that for would-be migrants who do not have the money to pay traffickers, their only option is to attempt to jump the fences in Ceuta and Melilla. They also said the migrants often know in advance the date on which a human stampede against the fence is due to take place, pointing out that news of the February 6th crossing attempt

Iberia reaches agreement with pilots

Iberia has reached what it called a “landmark” productivity agreement with the pilots union, Sepla, which puts an end to the conflict over the airline’s decision to set up a budget carrier that led to strikes in the spring of 2012 and the cancellation of hundreds of flights. Sepla had argued that the idea behind setting up Iberia Express was to introduce low-cost wages.

Iberia’s management said the work conditions finally established for pilots of the low-cost carrier undermined the company’s profitability and it had decided to freeze its fleet at 14 planes. The agreement with Sepla allows pilots to fly the maximum 900 hours a year permitted by the law and freezes their wages through to 2015.

Thereafter, salary increases will be linked to the airline’s profitability.

A few days earlier, Iberia’s management

had reached an inprinciple agreement with representatives of Iberia’s cabin crew that guarantees jobs through to 2015.

ETA prisoners plan to request transfers

eta convicts serving time in jails across Spain have announced they are to begin requesting transfers to prisons in the Basque country. in a statement released online and in the Basque publication Gara, the requests for transfer from prisons far from the Basque country to jails closer to home will be filed first for convicts who are ill or over the age of 70. eta’s prisoner collective announced at the end of december that it would reverse one of its policies, and recognise the legality of Spain’s penitentiary system.

the government of Prime Minister Mariano rajoy had been refusing to allow any transfers of prisoners, or any improvement of conditions in jail, until the Basque separatist group made that move. the latest announcement comes two years after the terrorist group announced a definitive end to its campaign of violence. it also came just two months after the european court of Human rights struck down the so-called “Parot doctrine,” which led to the release of more than 50 of eta convicts still serving sentences. News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

A suspected member of the notorious Pink Panther jewel thief network has been arrested in the Madrid suburb of Alcala de Henares.

Borko Ilincic, 33, is accused of being involved in the spectacular €11m robbery of a jewellery store in Dubai in 2007. When the police detained him as he was leaving a hotel in a rental car, he was carrying

a false Bosnian passport, although Interpol’s wanted file lists him as being from Serbia – from where many of the Panther gang come.

Formed by smugglers and militiamen from the Balkan civil wars, the Panthers are an international band of jewel thieves, known for their daring robberies and burglaries. Their

inventiveness and meticulous planning have earned them the grudging respect of their police adversaries. Interpol says the gang has stolen over €330 million of jewellery since 1999, and is linked to 340 robberies in 35 countries.

The Pink Panthers were given their name when police in London made an arrest in 2003,

and found a diamond ring hidden in a jar of face cream – a ploy used in the original Pink Panther comedies starring Peter Sellers. Many of their robberies have taken place on the French Riviera, where the Pink Panther films were shot, although they have also struck as far away as Dubai, Tokyo, and London.

Their most spectacular prize to date is the Comtesse de Vendome, a 125-carat necklace of 116

diamonds worth around €24 million, stolen from a Tokyo jewellers in 2004.

European Union halts N Switzerland talks

EWS

IN BRIEF

UNITED STATES

The EU has suspended talks with Switzerland over its participation in EU research and education programmes because of the Swiss vote last week to curb immigration, putting Switzerland's access to millions of euros of EU funding at risk.

Switzerland is not in the EU but more than half of its exports go to the 28nation bloc and it has adopted large sections of EU policy, so like most EU member states Switzerland is also in the Schengen zone, which enables citizens to cross European borders without passport checks.

When Croatia joined the EU last summer

Switzerland agreed to grant Croatians the same rights as those enjoyed by other EU workers in Switzerland. But at the weekend Switzerland said the accord could not be signed "in its current form", after a February 8th referendum invalidated the Swiss-EU pact on freedom of movement.

Swiss voters narrowly backed a proposal to bring

back strict quotas for immigration from EU countries, leading to an EU warning that it would reassess its relations with Switzerland "as a whole".

Although the Swiss economy is booming and unemployment is low, supporters of quotas believe free movement has put pressure on housing, health, education, and transport, and that foreign

workers drive salaries down. A quarter of Switzerland's eight million-strong population is foreign, and last year 80,000 new immigrants arrived.

The Swiss government and business leaders say free movement is key to Switzerland's economic success, allowing employers to choose skilled staff from across Europe.

Wavier jet stream 'changing weather' A recent study suggests that the main system that helps determine the weather over Northern Europe and North America, the so-called jet stream, has increasingly taken a longer, more meandering path, resulting in weather remaining the same for

more prolonged periods.

This has accounted for the recent stormy weather over the UK and the bitter winter weather in the US Mid-West remaining longer than it otherwise would have. A spokesman for the study's authors said: "We can expect more

of the same and we can expect it to happen more frequently." With the UK, the US and Australia experiencing prolonged, extreme weather, the question now being asked is whether recent patterns are due to simple natural variations or the result of manmade climate change?

The spokesman said it is too soon to tell. "The Arctic has been warming rapidly only for the past 15 years," he said. "Our current data is very short and so it is hard to get a very clear signal. But as we have more data we will start to see the influence of climate change."

Murder suspect claims death spree

A 19-year-old Pennsylvania woman jointly charged with murder with her husband has claimed in an interview with a newspaper while in prison that she has killed at least 22 other people. Miranda Barbour and her 22-year-old husband Elytte are currently charged with killing Troy LaFerrara after meeting him online, three weeks after they got married.

Police said Mr Barbour told investigators they committed the crime because they wanted to kill someone together. Ms Barbour said the murders happened during a six-year killing spree around the US and were part of an involvement in a satanic cult, that began in Alaska when she was 13, before moving to North Carolina. Police say they are investigating the 19-year-old's claims and have contacted both the FBI and police forces in other states. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for both defendants. Lawyers for the couple have sought psychiatric evaluations for their clients.

US consular officials expelled

President Nicolas Maduro has expelled three US consular officials, accusing them of meeting students involved in anti-government protests. The country has seen growing political tension and rallies, with three protesters dying in clashes last week. Maduro did not name the US officials when he made the announcement in a national TV broadcast, but said the foreign ministry would give details later. "It's a group of US functionaries who are in the universities. We've been watching them having meetings in the private universities for two months," Maduro said. On Saturday, US Secretary of State John Kerry issued a statement expressing concern about the rising tensions in Venezuela: "We are particularly alarmed by reports that the Venezuelan government has arrested or detained scores of antigovernment protesters and issued an arrest warrant for opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez." The main opposition grievances are high inflation, crime and the shortage of some staples. The government has blamed the shortages on "saboteurs" and "profit-hungry corrupt businessmen”.

Top chefs crack down on ‘food porn’

Two Michelin-starred French chefs are cracking down on customers who take photographs of their food, news website France TV has reported. Gilles Goujon, who runs the three-starred L'Auberge du vieux puits restaurant in Fontjoncouse in southern France, says it is poor etiquette to take photos of food, and more importantly, every time his creations appear on social networks it "takes away the surprise, and a little bit of my intellectual property". Another chef, Alexandre Gauthier of the Grenouillere restaurant in the northern town of La Madelaine-sous-Montreuil, has gone as far as to add a "no cameras" logo to his menu. Gauthier lamented the fact that customers now take pictures of the food rather than the people they are dining with. "Before, they were pictures of family, and now we take pictures of food. We tweet, we respond to comments, and the dish is cold." But not all restaurants take the same view – some have even been known to offer food photography courses.

Merkel proposes European network

Chancellor Angela Merkel has proposed building up a European communications network to help improve data protection, which would avoid emails and other data automatically passing through the United States. In her weekly podcast, she said she would raise the issue this week with French President Francois Hollande. Revelations of mass surveillance by the US National Security Agency (NSA) have prompted huge concern in Europe. Disclosures by the US whistleblower Edward Snowden suggested even the mobile phones of US allies, such as Mrs Merkel, had been monitored by American spies. Classified NSA documents revealed that large amounts of personal data are collected from the internet by US and British surveillance. Personal privacy is a sensitive issue in Germany where extensive surveillance was carried out under the Nazis and in communist East Germany. Germany has been trying to persuade Washington to agree to a "no-spy" agreement but without success.

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Italy's President Giorgio Napolitano has asked Matteo Renzi, the mayor of Florence, to form a new government, following the resignation on Friday of PM Enrico Letta after he was ousted in a vote called by Mr Renzi at a meeting of their centre-left Democratic Party.

The party had accused Mr Letta of failing to tackle the ailing economy. Mr Renzi, 39, must now negotiate a deal with Mr Letta's former coalition partners and could be sworn in by the end of the week. Mr Renzi has never been elected to parliament or served in government before and is viewed by many as an outsider. But Italians are desperate for political change, and his youth and dynamism, and

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano

his talk of the need for sweeping reform, have propelled him to the centre of the national stage.

After talks with President Napolitano on Monday, Mr Renzi talked of his commitment and determination and the need for urgency on reform. He told reporters: "The most pressing emergency, which

concerns my generation and others, is the emergency of labour, of unemployment and of despair." He has promised at least one major reform every month, starting with constitutional changes this month, labour reforms in March and improvements to bureaucracy the following month.

Thai police and protesters clash More than 40 people have been injured and one police officer has been killed in violence that erupted on Tuesday as Thai police began clearing protest sites in the capital, Bangkok. Police are trying to retake official sites that have been blocked by demonstrators since late last year.

Until now, police had been reluctant to use force against the protesters.

They have previously allowed demonstrators to enter government buildings in a bid to defuse tensions. The prime minister's office, Government House, has been a focal point for the demonstrators. Thousands gathered outside the building on Monday, cementing the gates shut in a bid to stop officials returning to work. The government has

announced that it wants to retake all the besieged buildings this week. Antigovernment protesters want Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step down, alleging that she is controlled by her brother, former leader Thaksin Shinawatra, who is currently in selfimposed exile. A million without power after new storm rages The latest in a series of severe winter storms battered Britain last Friday night leaving over a million people without power on Saturday. Communications and all forms of transport were badly affected as trees fell, power lines were brought down and flood levels increased. British Prime Minister David Cameron described the flooding as a “tragedy” and said people should be braced for more rain. A minicab driver was killed when falling masonry flattened her car. The pound belongs to Scotland?

Keep up with the news from home while living or taking a holiday here in Spain

this page written by Vic Gardner

Scotland´s first minister Alex Salmond has defended his stance on proposals for Scottish independence following suggestions by the coalition Government that if it went alone Scotland could not expect to keep sterling as its currency.

Mr Salmond wants to keep the pound, although he has been urged by some supporters to consider a new currency. “The pound is as much Scotland’s as the rest of the UK,” he said.

However one pundit voiced the opinion that Mr Salmond seems to think that if he demands the right to keep the UK pound long enough – the UK being the bit he no longer wants to be a part of – the UK Government will give in and let him keep it, adding: “Do they want independence or do they only want independence if they can keep the good bits, such as the currency and staying a member of the EU?”

Mr Salmond, speaking at an event organised by the pro-independence Business for Scotland organisation, discussed joining the EU, saying not to recognise Scotland

independently, undermines the very ideals of the EU. He also criticised recent comments made by Chancellor George Osborne who claimed last week that the pound was not an asset which could be divided up after a "messy divorce".

Mr Salmond pointed out that the expert economists in the Fiscal Commission Working Group he established had already concluded that a currency union would be a sensible and attractive choice for both an independent Scotland and the rest of the UK. But Mr Salmond attacked the idea that "Westminster would decide what was an asset and Westminster would decide what was a liability".

Freak wave hits cruise liner

During the latest severe storm a freak wave hit the 22,000tonne cruise ship Marco Polo in the English Channel killing 85-year-old James Swinstead. His widow, Helen Swinstead, said in a TV interview that she felt the liner had been “poorly maintained” as she noticed a rusty puddle on the window sill when they entered their cabin. Its owners Cruise and Maritime Voyages refute the allegations. The sea broke through four windows on the liner according to reports. An injured woman aged 70 was airlifted off the vessel and 14 other people were treated for minor injuries on board.

The ship had been returning from the Azores to the port of Tilbury, in Essex, after a 42night cruise when the storm hit.

UK must stop blaming New UK ruling its woes on immigration means that “life means life” despite previous ruling by More information Strasbourg needed theNews Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

In January of this year The Court of Appeal heard that whole-life sentences are not "manifestly excessive or wrong in principle". Appeal judges have now upheld that “life means life” sentences will be allowed – which means that the UKs most heinous murderers and rapists can be ordered to die in jail. The ruling directly contradicts a ruling last year by the European Court of Human Rights that quashed a 40-year sentence imposed on a multiple killer and imposed a new whole-life tariff.

The case was taken to the Court of Appeal by Attorney General Dominic Grieve after a trial judge ruled that Ian McLoughlin, 55, (above left) who was jailed for life at the Old Bailey in October for stabbing Graham Buck, 66, who was trying to help a man that McLoughlin was trying to rob on the first day he was eligible for day release from prison after 21 years in custody, said that a whole-life sentence was not appropriate for McLoughlin because European judges in Strasbourg had earlier ruled such sentences were a breach of human rights. McLoughlin had been convicted of killing twice before. The Attorney General determined that the 21 year sentence was “unduly lenient”. It is thought that with McLoughlin's upgraded sentence, 51 prisoners are now serving whole-life tariffs including Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper; Ian Brady, the Moors murderer; and Rosemary West, the “House of Horrors” serial killer.

Whitehall sources at the time said the trial judge, Mr Justice Sweeney, had “got it wrong” by deciding

the killer’s sentence on the say-so of Strasbourg before the Government, Parliament and the Sentencing Council had had the opportunity to consider their response to the European judges’ ruling.

The submission was made by James Eadie QC on behalf of Attorney General, arguing that if a sentencing court ''is of the opinion that, because of the seriousness of the offending, a minimum term should not be fixed, the court must impose a whole-life order''. Lord Thomas, the Lord Chief Justice, was sitting with Sir Brian Leveson, Lady Justice Hallett, Lord Justice Treacy and Mr Justice Burnett.

The Court of Appeal was also considering the sentence of another killer – Lee Newell. Newell, (above right) now 45, was challenging a whole-life sentence imposed last September at Warwick Crown Court. He was convicted alongside Gary Smith for the February 2013 murder of convicted child killer Anwar in his cell at Long Lartin Prison, Worcestershire. Newell was already serving a life sentence for a previous murder committed in 1988. In July last year the European Court of Human Rights ruled whole-life tariffs, which have been handed to some of the most

serious criminals in England and Wales, amounted to “inhuman and degrading treatment” and were therefore a breach of human rights laws. That case was brought by Jeremy Bamber, who killed five members of his own family in 1985, and by two other killers, Douglas Vinter, from Middlesbrough, who admitted killing his wife Anne in 2008, and Peter Moore, who killed four gay men in North Wales in 1995.

The Strasbourg case opened the door for further appeals by other prisoners serving life tariffs, including some of the most notorious killers in modern British history. Ministers have yet to make a substantive response to the Strasbourg ruling, against which there is no right of appeal because it was heard by the European court’s most senior chamber. The ruling will impact on a number of sentencing hearings, including that of Lee Rigby's killers Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale. Lord Thomas, the Lord Chief Justice, has now ruled whole-life tariffs are "entirely compatible with the European Convention on Human Right". He said: "Judges should therefore continue as they have done to impose whole-life orders on the rare and exceptional cases which fall within the statutory scheme."

The EU’s justice minister, Viviane Reding, a veteran conservative politician from Luxembourg, said during a debate about the UK’s future in the EU at the University of Cambridge that UK politicians should stop blaming immigration for the country’s difficulties and “work on the quality of education and welfare”, adding that it was distracting from vital efforts to boost EU economies. “Those who benefit from the free flow of capital, goods and services must also accept that our citizens are free to move in the EU to travel, study and work," she continued: "Politicians also need to work on the quality of education and welfare, so that people in this country can find employment and enjoy reasonable social standards. The debate in this country about the UK's place in the EU is distorted. All that talk about opt-outs, renegotiations and referenda distracts from the real issue. We don't need this. What we need are great ideas and solid arguments about how we can strengthen the EU and make it more competitive on the world stage." Ms Reding claimed Eurosceptic arguments

that the UK would be "leaner and meaner" outside the EU ignored that it would face huge problems negotiating favourable deals to access the single market.

And at a further debate in London Ms Reding was speaking to voters at a "citizens' dialogue" – part of an official EU information campaign that is being held worldwide. She told the meeting that there was a need for more information about the EU, not only in the UK but in other member states too. She said Brussels had even been blamed for Britain's floods. "I didn't know I'm so powerful that I can make the rain fall," she quipped.

Speaking at the same forum, UK Europe Minister David Lidington said increasing the European Parliament's powers was not the way to get more public engagement in EU affairs. He called for UK politicians and civil servants to do more detailed scrutiny of EU laws, including assessing the impact of certain EU measures retrospectively.

Europe's "democratic deficit" was exacerbated by "talk about institutions, jargon", he said. Instead, the EU should focus on issues that really matter to voters, such as mobile roaming charges, budget flights, creating muchneeded jobs, he said. A questioner at the debate said that opinion polls showed that immigration was high on the list of UK voters concerns following a large influx of people from Eastern Europe but Ms Reding replied that statistics showed the majority of EU migrants in the UK "came to work, they're net contributors". “A small minority creates real difficulties, and very often they are sitting in one spot,” she added.

She quoted new official UK figures which show that about 2.2 million Britons live in continental Europe and about 2.3 million citizens of other EU countries live in the UK. In the UK, 77% of the EU migrants work, while the comparable figure for Britons is 72% and for non-EU migrants it is 60%, Ms Reding said. EU migrants make up just 2.1% of welfare recipients in the UK, she added.

Rescued from a muddy end

A donkey called Geraldine was found up to her neck in mud in a field in Clapton-in-Gordano, Somerset, with only her head and the top of her back poking out of the ground on Monday. It took more than two hours for fire crews to pull the 15-year-old donkey free using boards and strops. She was reunited with her owners and after an operation, is now believed to be doing well, Avon Fire and Rescue Service said. A spokesman said: "The incident was attended by the animal rescue unit which includes equipment and crews trained in assisting large animals. By the time crews left the scene she had returned to her stable to warm up and have something to eat."

Tobacco smuggling not exclusive to Spain’s border with Gibraltar the

Despite the Spanish government's hype about tobacco smuggling across the border with Gib, the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) has revealed that the extent and volumes concerned are easily dwarfed by what goes on all over the Spanish coastlines and northern borders.

According to the last official report, Spain's illegal cigarettes activity is estimated at 25% of the market and is rising rapidly, amounting to illegal sales of more than €1 billion, spurred on by the country's 55 per cent tax rate on tobacco.

According to OLAF, most smuggled cigarettes arrive by sea along the coast of Galicia but rising demand has led to increased smuggling by lorries across the French border. Official figures show that tobacco smuggling across the Gib border is miniscule when compared to what goes elsewhere on the mainland. According to the Spanish Tax Agency La Agencia Tributaria, police recently smashed a smuggling ring near the port of Bilbao and seized

Who's next?

I I

'm convinced that these media obsessions are not spontaneous. The Left used Barcenas to try to bring down the government, the antimonarchists used Princess Cristina to bring down the monarchy – there's always an interested party behind the news headlines and unfortunately too many newspapers, TV and radio political chat shows are too inclined to play up anything that is anti-government. Being a revolutionary in media and cultural circles is the in-thing here in Spain.

B

ut do the rest of the Spaniards really take much notice of them, apart from sneering at their blatant hypocrisy? Take the Goya cinema awards. Last year, the best actress – can't remember her name – went on about the evictions. She was wearing a dress that cost more than most working people earn in a year and to cap it all, she had worked as a real estate agent, that is, as one of the very people who encouraged those poor evicted souls to take on mortgages they could ill afford. I could give you dozens more examples but I don't want to bore you.

R

ight now, all the action is in the Ukraine, Thailand, Venezuela – all very far from here, although I'm keeping my eye on Venezuela, having lived there for so many years. The European Parliament election is a few months away – and who cares anyway, although we should. And the next general election won't be before November next year.

I

The Local Memo from Voice Madrid

remember complaining last year to Martin Delfin that the news headlines – on TV or in print – were so boring because they were all about the former Partido Popular's treasurer, Luis Barcenas. Such are the vagaries of the media that people are now saying – who's he? And I'm asking – who's next? Princess Cristina seems to have dropped off the radar since her court appearance and for the life of me I can't see who they're going to pick on now.

t's at times like these when I miss dear old Zapatero. He never failed to get my blood boiling, inspiring me to write some of the best invective I've ever written. No-one can get that excited about Mariano Rajoy, bless his cotton socks. So it was with great delight that I read in interview with Joaquin Leguina in the ABC paper. He was the general secretary of the Madrid Socialist Federation for 11 years and the first regional premier of the Madrid

Community so his credentials are pretty solid. He now calls himself "swordsmen of the purest Social Democracy" and he uses that sword mercilessly in his latest book – "Zapatero, the great organiser of defeats: History of an absurdity". Leguina claims we're still suffering from the hangover left by the Zapatero years. He blames him for the current Catalan crisis, by promising them the earth during his 2004 election campaign and then allying himself with the worst of the nationalist parties, the Catalan Republican Left, in order to be able to form his first government.

H

e recommends the chapter called "The saddest night" to people who want to know how 4.3 million Socialist votes disappeared into thin air on November 20th, 2011. Many went to the United Left, but Leguina reckons that at least 1.2 million moderate Socialists voted for Rajoy.

H

e says Zapatero didn't invent the economic crisis, but he didn't do anything to alleviate it either. He says José María Aznar went mad during his second term in government – the war with Iraq – and recalls how one Partido Popular MP said to him: "Our PM went mad in his second term, yours (Zapatero) was mad from the start."

H

e accuses Zapatero of destroying the old Socialist guard, replacing it with what I call Lite or Chic Socialists who do nothing but prance and posture in their pursuit of the latest "in" issue. Leguina and I could go on forever but we don't want to bore you.

s if to prove how low they've fallen, the latest Socialist ignominy is a plan to vote with the Basque mish-mash of a party called Bildu in the Navarre parliament in an attempt to bring down that regional government. Bildu quite openly supports the Basque terrorist group ETA, one of whose major objectives was to win over Navarre to the independence cause. The people of Navarre have consistently refused to go along with this but if the Socialists get their way they may find themselves being governed by a party intent on taking them down that path. The Socialists have denied it all, of course, but they say one thing today and do something completely different tomorrow. So please include Navarre in your prayers.

The unspoken migrant problem Writes for the English language version of

W

ith this month’s tragedy that took place in Ceuta still fresh in everyone’s minds, there is a greater need for the government to do more to combat human trafficking in Spain. Last weekend, El País reported that some 30,000 sub-Saharan migrants are waiting in different parts of North Africa to make a desperate rush to reach the Spanish enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta. Their bid is to finally come to Europe where, they believe, they can eke out a better life than in their troubled home countries. Spanish security forces at the borders of both enclaves have found themselves in a precarious situation. Besides their low numbers, law enforcement officers, including the Guardia Civil, have no means of controlling any human avalanche of this magnitude unless drastic force is used. On February 6th, at least 15 migrants died when some 300 people made a mad attempt to reach Ceuta at the Moroccan border crossing of Tarajal by jumping into the sea and trying to swim around a stretch of sea wall that divides the shore waters between the Spanish enclave and the North African kingdom. The 300 were part of a larger group of stampeding migrants that rushed the fence at the crossing that morning. Guardia Civil officers fired rubber bullets in order to control the situation, Interior Minister Jorge Díaz Fernández later testified in Parliament. But he said that their actions were “proportionate” and within police regulations. On Monday, about 150 others, mostly from Cameroon, made it to Melilla and were taken to a temporary migrant holding centre, with no violent incidents reported.

in the domestic service, agriculture, construction, and tourism sectors” .One interesting highlight in the report explains that even Spanish nationals are being forced into working in different sectors, including prostitution, within their own country.

L

uman trafficking is a severe and sometime unspoken problem in today’s society. The casual visit to the brothels that dot the outskirts of major cities – seen for many years as a harmless pastime for Spanish men – is now viewed as a contributing factor to the government’s dilemma in cracking down on mafias. Nevertheless, the government should take stronger action against prostitution. It may only serve to push the human traffickers and mafias further underground to carry out their prostitution activities, but it will help curtail the shocking dark side of Spain’s explosive migrant problem.

S

panish and Moroccan intelligence services believe that mafias which dedicate themselves to trafficking people across borders are helping these sub-Saharans reach north Morocco. While most would-be migrants don’t have enough money to pay the exorbitant fees to help them get “safely” across to Spain without having to go through the enclaves, those that do usually end up suffering and forced into modern-day slavery.

ast month, the US Justice Department in Washington released a country-by-country roundup on human-trafficking and how governments are dealing with the problem. Spain is considered both a destination and transit country not only for sub-Saharans but for people who are brought in by mafias from Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia. Prostitution is the major reason why many of these would-be migrants fall victim to trafficking mafias, but these organisations are also bringing people in and subjecting them “to forced labour

S

ince 2009, Spain has tightened it anti-human-trafficking laws but Washington hasn’t been able discern the exact number of prosecutions and sentences for these crimes. “The government demonstrated some efforts to address its ongoing deficiencies in victim identification and protection, but did not demonstrate tangible improvements for the majority of trafficking victims in Spain,” the report stated. “The government issued a directive in January 2010 instructing Immigration and Alien Affairs officers and other police to assume foreigners in Spain with illegal status are potential victims of trafficking, however the government has yet to adopt formalized, stand-alone guidelines or indicators for all front-line responders to use in identifying potential forced labour or sex trafficking victims among all vulnerable groups, such as women in the commercial sex trade or migrant workers.”

T

he last figures cited in the US Justice report are from early 2010 in which the Spanish government identified 1,301 trafficking victims in 2009, of whom 95 per cent were reportedly female victims of sex trafficking. But it added that ”while the government publicly stated that all of these identified victims were assisted, it did not officially collect or track the actual number of victims who were referred to NGOs for care in 2009.” As part of the recommendations, Washington has called on Madrid to work closely with NGOs through “formal partnership” to identify and assist these victims.

Recently international friends of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar visited the national park of the Alpujarras. It was a glorious sunny day, but rather cool and after a short stop for coffee, the first village visited was Pampaniera, with its cobbled streets, art and craft shops and a treat to sample all the different, delicious kinds of chocolate in the local factory. The journey then continued through the beautiful countryside where the almond blossom was already appearing and the mountain tops were covered in snow, to the town of Trevelez, the highest in the Sierra Nevada. Here, the group were given a guided tour of one of the famous factories which cure and dry hams (pictured left). After the explanation of the process used, the friends were invited to sample the local

produce, ham and wine and they were able to purchase their favourite items. There was then time to stroll around the town, and have a drink seated in the beautiful sunshine, after which the group enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant. On the return journey the coach driver suggested they drive through the village of Bubion, to the village of Capileira where there was also free time to admire the beautiful views of the snow-capped mountains on the one side and down the valley towards the coast, there was the sea. It was then time for home, after a very enjoyable and successful day. Lux Mundi would like to thank all those who participated and look forward to meeting the friends again at the Centre and on one of their future excursions.

Help stop the campo burglaries

The American International Club of Nerja Club members and guests enjoyed another great social event as many of the members dined on a vast array of Indian dishes expertly prepared at a restaurant in Nerja recently, and impromptu dancing and singing filled the evening. AIC has grown to 135+ members of many nationalities all of whom enjoy a variety of events like bowling, petanque, scenic walks, coffee, tapas and dinner meetings, guided travel to various sites, and raising funds for charities.

Membership is only €15 euros a year that gives discounts on Club events. For info on members activities, see the website: www.americaninternationa lclub.com or e-mail: nerjaclub@yahoo.com or call Club President, Len on 655 807 760.

An Action Meeting has been arranged for next Monday in response to the huge amount of burglaries in inland. The meeting will take place on Monday 24th February starting at 11am at Venta Los Arcos, Crtra Cartama – Coin, Km 6. This is the road that goes from Coin to Cartama. Entry is free and there’s plenty of free parking.

The meeting is open to anybody interested in forming neighbourhood watch groups in any area who wish to attend – and especially those from the Coin, Cartama and Alhaurin Campo areas who have been targeted recently by these thieves resulting in damage and loss to property and even assaults on pets.

Mr Geoff Salter (President, Vecinos Cooperando) is attending

and will make a presentation about protecting ourselves and forming groups within our areas.

Mr Jon Sutton and Sr Javier Florido (Lawyers, De Cotta Law) will be on hand to answer any legal issues and inform us of our limitations under Spanish Law. Come and help yourselves by joining a neighbourhood watch scheme and by helping your neighbours make your area a safer place to live.

Share this with your friends and neighbours or, better still, invite them to come along to the meeting too! Together we can make them think twice about burgling in our areas. Don't be an ostrich… it’s better to be a meerkat!!

These dangerous lines, in our opinion, should not be used for daily walks. They have caused many accidents and certainly are not allowed in any professional school. If you use such a line please consider joining a local school – within a few lessons you will be able to walk your dog nicely. Oh and harnesses are a bigger ‘NO no’! By the way I am able to inform you that both Boy Boy and Sheba do their pees on command and when they are told to be ‘Busy’ yes they do it within minutes. What is the secret? As you see your dog performing keep saying ‘Pippee pippee’. Repeat and repeat in a kind voice. The moment they have finished give them a treat. After a few times your dog will do it on command, but best to use the same place at first. Celia says: Choosing a pedigree kitten. Today’s pedigree cats are beginning to develop inherited diseases from too much inbreeding, just like the diseases found in pedigree dogs. It’s a complicated topic but worth looking into before you decide on one particular breed All the information you need can be found at International Cat Care – www.icatcare.org There are now genetic

tests available for some disorders, and you may like to discuss these with cat breeders.

Anna says: Handling. Most dogs are friendly and will greet most people with a wagging tail. It can however become a different story if someone for example tries to look at their teeth or in their ears. Get your dog used to being handled by others, otherwise you will have a problem taking it to the vet, going to dogshows or even if it gets hurt and you need help carrying it. This is something that most of us don´t think about but it is ever so important.

Nazli says: Cats are very private about their lives. If you notice your cat is not up and about but just lying in the same place sleeping, or not wanting to eat, then something is wrong. The cat could be running a fever due to an infection or might be injured without showing you signs. Some cats will become very grumpy if you want to pick them up, so be careful in placing him in a cat box (preferably from the top) and take him to your veterinarian. Well, only sort of. About three years ago an idea that had been rolling around in the heads of seasoned Irish actors Stephen Burns and Matt Murphy to do a piece about Oscar Wilde which would entertain the audience of the Salon Varietes Theatre came to fruition. It isn't often that a new piece of theatre starts out in Fuengirola, in fact this may be the only one, but the subject matter is so terrific it is hard to see what could not be good. And good it was but clearly rather unpolished with just a few rough edges. Still the audience that night loved it. Who has never said 'a handbag' in a funny voice? Today we all love Oscar and delight in the plays he left us. Stephen and Matt have performed together on many occasions with Stephen winning best actor twice at the Irish International Festival as

well as best actor at the U.S. International in Chicago. They performed an Oscar Wilde play in Monaco for Princess Grace and were asked back to present it for Prince Rainer and Princess Caroline. They have since developed their play, utilising the skills of Pat Talbot as director, to cover Oscar's infatuation with Lily Langtry, his writing of The Happy Prince for his own children and his other plays especially The Importance of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband, The Picture of Dorian Grey and The Ballad of Reading Goal and then the fateful meeting with Bosie and the stop at nothing reaction of the Marquis of Queensbury. The trial is covered in more detail with input from George Bernard Shaw, Frank Harris and others. Through it all the dry wit

we have come to love lightens even the worst moments with laughter. From Fuengirola the play went to Ireland where it ran for three weeks in a lunchtime theatre and then after more work, to Dublin's Viking Theatre where it had two weeks of full houses and standing ovations. After Fuengirola it starts an eighteen city tour of Ireland and plans are afoot for it go further afield. The Salon Varietes Theatre has the play for three nights, on Friday February 21st and Saturday 22nd at 8.00 and on Sunday February 23rd at 7.00. Box Office is 952 47 45 42 or online www.salonvarietestheatre .com. Don't miss this fascinating and moving experience. Written by Graham Cherry

In case you’d not heard, this is to let you know about the five-day folk festival taking place in and around the Hotel Alay area of Benalmadena from Saturday March 14th until Tuesday the 18th under the title Costa del Folk.

Around 20 acts over from the UK and Ireland will be appearing for what the organisers describe as the first folk festival of its kind to be held in Spain. Artistes will include Mike Harding, Fairport Convention, Show of Hands, The Mighty Doonans and many more of similar stature. Many will remember

Fairport Convention who are to headline the event. Established 45 years ago, the band has won a coveted BBC Lifetime Achievement Award and Radio 2 listeners voted Fairport’s ground breaking album Liege & Lief ‘The Most Influential Folk Album of All Time’. Fairport Convention (pictured below) features Simon Nicol on guitar and lead vocals, Dave Pegg on bass and backing vocals, Chris Leslie on fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki and lead vocals, Ric Sanders on violin and Gerry Conway on drums and percussion.

Release date: February 11th

Director: Ridley Scott Starring: Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt A lawyer known as The Counselor is eager to get married to his lovely girlfriend Laura and is thrilled when she accepts his proposal.

However, his seemingly idyllic life is about to take a very dark turn. He has been dabbling in drug trafficking, and such illicit activities have a

Robocop

Directed by José Padilha Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Samuel L Jackson, Gary Oldman It’s 2028, and the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the cutting edge of robot technology. They make billions from the military use of their drones around the world but want to explore new ways of using their technology on the home front.

The US government has prohibited the use of a mechanised police force, preferring to rely on the compassionate judgement of flesh and blood police officers. But the battle against crime is not being won. And a golden opportunity to experiment presents itself when Alex Murphy (Kinnaman), a good cop fighting crime and corruption in Detroit, is critically wounded in the line of duty.

OmniCorp welcomes the chance to save Alex’s life and rebuild him to create a part-man, partrobot policeman with the power to take on all

criminal elements. It could lead to a Robocop in every city - the aim is to win the hearts and minds of the American electorate, and of course create a major new income stream for the company destined to keep shareholders happy. But the company and its scientists forgot one thing - inside the machine is a man who was a loving husband and father, a man who combined humanity with a desire to fight crime, a man who is struggling to come to terms with his new ‘life’ and with a mission to track down the drug dealers who tried to murder him.

The movie is designed to take a satirical critical look at big business and corruption – Gary Oldman plays the brilliant scientist ready to abandon any moral scruples he may have to take on the Frankenstein mantle of creator in return for research funding. This

Director: Jon S. Baird Starring: Imogen Poots, James McAvoy, Joanne Froggatt Scheming Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy), a bigoted and corrupt policeman, is in line for a promotion and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Enlisted to solve a brutal murder and threatened by the aspirations of his colleagues, including Ray Lennox (Jamie Bell), Bruce sets about ensuring their ruin, right under the nose of

As he turns his colleagues against one another by stealing their wives and exposing their secrets, Bruce starts to lose himself in a web of deceit that he can no longer control. His past is slowly catching up with him, and a missing wife, a crippling drug habit and suspicious colleagues start to take their toll on his sanity.

The question is: can he keep his grip on reality long enough to disentangle himself from the filth?

You are in the spotlight this week so expect to receive some sort of recognition coming your way particularly in your career arena. A good thing to remember is that you probably didn’t get there on your own. No man is an island and through your interaction with others and their input – this has made you what you are today. You may hear from old friends or past partners and this can make you behave in a spontaneous and impulsive manner. There could be a second chance for a position on the work front that you thought was long dead and gone as there is a productive influence that is asserting itself upon you. This is a great window of opportunity to clear the air and clear your name knowing you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. You have a social grace this week for connecting with others, well able to relate to all levels. Your challenge, however, is to rise above the temptation of taking sides. There is a trail that you are following, a puzzle that needs unravelling and the signs that are coming your way are the goalposts to realising the truth of this mystery. Remain open to the unconventional and the radical as this could open up areas that were previously tightly closed. Believe in yourself and your abilities and get rid of the doubt that keeps trying to agitate you from the depths. Your vast knowledge and experiences will bring you the freedom you have been seeking.

...you don’t have to be a chef!

After a beautiful weekend the cold weather is back with a vengeance for a few days, so why not try a warming bowlful of this filling, low-fat soup?

Red lentil, chickpea & chilli soup Ingredients:

Prep: 10 mins Cook: 25 mins

This is a contemplative time to look inspiring at your future and the array of promising possibilities that lay before you. Now, however, you are looking at it from a foundation that is so strong and firm that nothing can rock your boat. You have put the hard work in and now it is time to breathe a sigh of relief. Nothing is impossible anymore, although you will still have to exercise a bit of patience when going after what you want. It is all about justice for you right now, you are seeing so many injustices happen around you that you are likely to be fired up and raring to stand up for the underdog. Your words and your ability to deliver will be so spot on that they will direct themselves at the heart and make the necessary impact. Connections will be repaired and the air will be cleared. In one area you may not have all the answers yet, so take your time and slowly but surely you will get there. The fruits of your labour are in full bloom and your earning power is likely to increase. There may be many opportunities coming your way and you will have to consider the impact this will have on others. You will aim to do the right things because you can. Break things down and look at the cause and effect of each action or non action and then devise a plan (which you are great at doing) that focuses on the future.

January 20th February 18th

February 19th March 20th

Something or someone could have been trying to put a twist to your plans, at first it could seem like a real annoyance but every cloud has a silver lining and it could turn out to be more opportunistic than you first realise. You are in store for a good surprise, no longer are you allowed to float around in the background, your power and influence upon others will shift you into a new gear. You are the voice of reason right now and others are waiting to hear your call.

• small bunch coriander, roughly chopped (save a few leaves, to serve) • 4 tbsp 0% Greek yogurt, to serve

rinsed and drained (freeze leftovers)

Perhaps it is time to get off the garden fence and make a key decision, sitting in that position is ok for a while until you know truly what you want, but after a while you can become too comfortable and stagnation occurs - or you could lose the very thing you are worried about committing too. It is time to turn a corner and have the courage to take charge, communication is the key, open up and by doing this your position may become clear. You are on the tip of everyone’s tongues at the moment as your surge in popularity and position has sky rocketed. Challenges are likely to occur but none that are unsolvable if you tackle them with a little thought and tact. Your insight for seeing the truth in situations now is stark and even if others are having problems seeing the wood for the trees it is you that can sort it all out and make some sort of sense. You are no longer the shrinking violet but the belle of the ball.

(Serves 4)

• 2 tsp cumin seeds • large pinch chilli flakes • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 red onion, chopped • 140g red split lentils • 850ml vegetable stock or water • 400g can tomatoes, whole or chopped • 200g carton chickpeas or ½ a can, Directions

You may feel let down or in some extreme cases betrayed by someone you thought you could trust but this time you have something new at your disposal – leverage, some information you discover will give you the upper hand and help turn things around to your advantage. Be sure you know what effect your words and actions will have upon others before you take action, when you speak, your blade of truth, can cut deep to the point – someone close may need a softer delivery this week.

PISCES

Kym’s Kitchen

This week is all about deepening your connections with others and to make a clean and clear influence on your close connections. Passion is starting to stir from within again and this will allow you to muster up the courage you need to confront issues that thrust up before you. Major changes are in the wings and it is important to consider the long term effect of your current actions. Seek out creative solutions now in preparation for the future.

When your relationships work, life works and for you this is everything. Just don’t rely too much on the promises of others right now as more can be happening than you are aware of and perhaps they have the right intentions but things are getting in the way of delivery. Some parts of your old life will feel as though they just do not fit with you anymore and the only thing you can do is take the time to sift through what is working and what is dragging rd September 23 you down and then begin the process of de-cluttering. nd October 22

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty

News - Breakthroughs - Treatments - Trends

Dear Sue,

There are so many beauty salons and beauticians opening up, how do I know who is fully trained and qualified? Kim, Malaga Dear Kim,

Thoroughly trained beauty therapists can be very hard to come by in Spain. You need to check certificates that they have (usually proudly displayed in reception). Recognised international diplomas include I.T.E.C. City and Guilds and C.I.D.E.S.C.O. If a therapist does not have certificates that are

recognised then they can't get insurance, so should anything go wrong with a treatment there is no comeback. Before having any treatment do your research. A trip to a salon should be a relaxing and enjoyable experience, not fraught with worries. Dear Calvin,

I wear a wig most of the time, but find that now my own hair is very dry and brittle. Is my wig causing this? Cathy, Alora

wear a wig most of the time but I assume it is because you are not happy with your own hair. Although today’s wigs are very good and allow some air to your scalp, it is not the same as not wearing one at all. Hair reacts in the same way as nails do if you continually paint them and never let them breath – they become dry and brittle. Hair and nails need natural light to stay healthy. I suggest you try leaving your wig off whenever possible to let your hair breathe and use regular conditioning products on your own hair.

marks on my face, what creams can you advise to get rid of them? Lily Fuengirola Dear Lily,

There are lots of effective creams that will remove them and a lot of creams that won't. Some creams claim to remove many signs of ageing all in one go. You will need a cream that lightens, so all-in-one creams are a no go. As they lighten the brown marks they will lighten the rest of the skin, so the contrast will always be there. It can be expensive to buy creams just for two small areas so my best advice is to use sun

block so they don't get any worse, and then take a very light almost white concealer or foundation and apply over them. Allow to dry and apply your usual foundation. Cleverly concealed you'll forget they are there. Dear Calvin,

I have been dyeing my hair blonde for years and now it is looking washed out and almost grey. How can I get it to look more natural again? Debbie, Benalmadena Dear Debbie,

introducing lowlights with gold tones or even an allover colour with gold tones as this will neutralise the grey effect. Your hair tone has probably changed over the years and the colour you are using is now too ash for you, hence the grey effect. If you are unsure in which direction to go in pop for a chat and I am sure we can work something out. If you have any questions for Calvin or Sue, you can contact them on email – Calvin, calton1@hotmail .co.uk and Sue’s email is aniathome05 @gmail.com. 'Cancer monorail' can kill tumours Cancer "monorails" can be used to kill tumours by luring them into toxic pits or areas of the body that are safer to operate on, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the US have discovered. They designed nanofibres thinner than a human hair which cancers "choose" to travel down.

Dear Cathy,

Animal studies showed brain tumours could be shrunk by tricking cancer cells into migrating down these fibres.

The researchers were working with difficult-totreat brain cancers – glioblastomas – which have a tendency to spread inside the brain. The

along a path you specify and then kill it." They said the monorail could also make cancer surgery easier. Normally the tumour and the surrounding tissue are removed, but in the brain removing any unnecessary tissue could have dire consequences.

The researchers suggested doctors might be able to move a tumour to an area more easily operated on. However, the research is still at a very early stage and there will be far more animal studies before it is considered for treatment in people.

Dog bites, the most common bites treated, can tear flesh and break bones, but they create open wounds that are easy to clean and less likely to become infected than the puncture wounds created by cats, which usually affect the hand and can inject bacteria into tendons and bones. In a three-year retrospective study, researchers reviewed records of 193 people who went to the Mayo Clinic Hospital with cat bites to the hand. Thirty-six victims were immediately admitted to the hospital, for an average stay of three days. Another 154 were treated with oral antibiotics as outpatients, although 21 of them eventually had to be hospitalised.

The most common cause of infection was Pasteurella multocida, an aggressive bacterium found in the mouths of many animals and in up to 90 per cent of healthy cats. Amoxicillin is commonly used to treat it.

Beware of cat bites

Complications included nerve involvement, abscesses and loss of joint mobility.

The researchers said: “Redness, swelling, increasing pain, difficulty in moving the hand and drainage from the wound are all signs that there may be an infection and that treatment should be sought.” They added: “The tendon sheaths and joints are superficial in the hand, and cat bites penetrate easily, seeding those spaces with the germ, “Once it’s in there, it can grow quite rapidly in fluidfilled spaces that don’t have blood circulation, and surgery is often required. That’s an important message: don’t ignore a cat bite.”

Twelve Years A Slave wins Best Film and Actor This year’s Baftas took place at the Royal Opera House in London’s West End last weekend

… and it is said that the awards are a good indication of what will happen at the Oscars later

This year’s BaftaAwards took place last Sunday at the Royal Opera House in London. British director Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave was named Best Film and the Leading Actor award went to the film’s Chiwetel Ejiofor who received a standing ovation as he took to the stage to collect his gong from Uma Thurman. He said he was "so deeply honoured and privileged to receive it" and thanked McQueen for his "artistry and passion". "You really brought us all through it and had the real vision to tell this extraordinary story," he added. The film was nominated in 10 categories but was beaten in many of

them by Gravity. Gravity, a space adventure which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, claimed six prizes, including Best Director and Outstanding British Film for Alfonso Cuaron. The British film label it was given caused some controversy but it was filmed in the UK and its FX team are UK based. Awards for Best Sound, Cinematography, Visual Effects and Original Music were also won by the film. Cate Blanchett claimed the leading actress trophy after her acclaimed performance in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine. She dedicated her award to recently deceased actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Best supporting actress was won by Jennifer Lawrence for her part in American Hustle. British comedian Steve Coogan won the award for best adapted screenplay for Philomena, in which he also stars with Dame Judi Dench. He said he was more pleased at being recognised for his writing than he would have been for his acting or comedic skills. Barkhad Abdi won the award for Supporting Actor, presented by British actress Emma Thompson, for his role as a Somali pirate in Captain Phillips. Accepting his award, he thanked his co-star Tom Hanks, his "fellow pirates" and film-maker Paul

Greengrass "for believing in me before I believed in myself". One of the highlights of the night came when Prince William, prior to presenting a Bafta Fellowship award to Dame Helen Mirren described her as "an extremely talented British actress who I should probably call granny" – referring to her role playing the Queen in the recent film by the same name. Dame Helen paid her own tribute to one of her former teachers who died recently and "alone was the person who encouraged me to be an actor". And at a ceremony later at Buckingham Palace, the Queen herself revealed

that she kept her own honorary Bafta, that she was awarded last year, on top of the telly saying: "I

Helen Mirren with her Bafta 2014

couldn't help but look at mine, which I keep on the television."

G’night daddy Simon Cowell shows off

The actor who played the father in the long running series, The Waltons, died in the Palm Springs area of California on Thursday according to his manager.

Ralph Waite, 85, played patriarch John Walton in the series which was aired for nine seasons in the 70s and centred around a rural Virginian family during The Depression and World War Two. "I am devastated to announce the loss of my precious 'papa' Walton, Ralph Waite," said Mary McDonough, who played daughter Erin Walton. "I

loved him so much; I know he was so special to all of us. He was like a real father to me. Goodnight Daddy. I love you."

In more recent years Mr. Waite appeared as Gibbs’ father in NCIS and in Days of Our Lives. He also starred in Cool Hand Luke in 1967 alongside Paul Newman and as the father of Kevin Costner's character in 1992's The Bodyguard.

Manager Alan Mills said: "He was a wonderful guy. He was always kind, always generous, and a joy to work with."

his new baby son to the world on Twitter Simon Cowell, 54, seems to have taken to fatherhood like a duck to water, if the pictures of himself and his baby son he released last weekend are anything to go by. Becoming a father for the first time to Eric – who has been named after his late father – on Valentine’s Day he released a statement at the weekend on Twitter saying that “The last three days have been incredible.” He also posted pictures of Eric flanked by cuddly toys and wrapped in a grey blanket.

I just wonder if it's possible through your column to bring to the attention of fellow readers the scandalous use of "902" premium numbers in Spain. Recently I had to renew my car insurance and add a second car with Linea Directa, a company I have used for many years.

The only way of speaking to them is to call a 902 number. Knowing it was extortionately expensive from my mobile I decided to call them and quickly ask them to call me back. I had to do this on two occasions – on the 24th & 28th of January. The two calls lasted for a combined duration of 2 minutes and 47 seconds and the cost on my mobile account was €7.74. Yes €7.74!

Checked it out, but a bit confused to what I need. You have the PI card itself with all the connectors, a SD card and a starter kit. What do I really need, can you help?

I have written a letter of complaint to the Managing Director of Linea Directa, but I doubt that I'll receive the courtesy of a reply. I urge all your readers to check newspaper ads. for ones using these numbers, and also be aware that even making a doctor's appointment at the Centro de Salud uses a "902" number.

Thank you for your excellent paper, keep up

I read the article in the News by Roy Packham Wednesday 12th February. It sounds interesting.

Editor says: Yes, I got caught out on this after I had been told by Telefonica that 902 numbers were “national” numbers that you only got charged a local rate for. Indeed, when we first started The News we had one of them. However, when I found out that it was costing our readers a small fortune, we cancelled the number straight away. What a rip off!

Las Lomas

Editor says: I passed your letter on to Roy and this is what he has come up with: “In case any of your readers are interested, I have bought an Android TV settop box that cost me a total of 116 euro. It connects my Internet to my standard television by means of an HDMI cable. The set-top box is WIFI enabled and is a model

Cloudnet CR11S. It comes with its own remote and works in similar fashion to any tablet. I use its Google search engine to connect to Filmon and receive all TV channels – for free. The picture is very good standard definition and the trial period I had for High Definition was excellent.

It took me about 5 minutes to setup. I also use a WIFI enabled keyboard, although a "screen keyboard" can be displayed and used with the remote.

I have no need to purchase any subscription channels from a satellite company.

The rumour that is circulating regarding the legality of Filmon is unfounded. Filmon are in dispute with the US channels and details of this can be found at http://news.google.com. However, their service is perfectly legal within Europe.” I hope this has helped you Rod.

V

Have you noticed the very bright ‘star’ in the east just before sunrise? It’s not a star, it is the planet Venus. enus is the second planet out from the Sun and is the closest planet to Earth both in distance and in size; it is just slightly smaller than the Earth. Venus orbits the Sun quicker than we do taking about 224 Earth days to complete one orbit but it rotates on its axis very slowly taking about 243 Earth days. So a Venusian day lasts longer than a Venusian year. Venus also rotates in the opposite direction to all the other planets. Viewed from above the Venus North Pole the planet rotates in a clockwise direction while all other planets turn anti-clockwise.

O

f all the night-time objects in the sky Venus ranks as second brightest after the Moon. At the moment, Venus is shining at her absolute best, and any early morning risers or parents on the school run cannot have helped but spot it.

I

f you haven’t seen it yet, then simply look in the direction of sunrise just before dawn and you’ll easily see it. If you can, try to keep it in view as the Sun comes up and you’ll be amazed to find that it can still be seen in daylight if you know exactly where to look.

W

hile being named after the Roman Goddess of love and beauty, Venus always looks a bit eerie around its time of greatest brilliancy. At these times, many people have reported Venus as a UFO. US president Jimmy Carter actually reported a UFO sighting in 1969 that turned out to be Venus. Plus, there are multiple stories in military history about people mistaking Venus for an enemy spy balloon, and trying to shoot it down!

V

enus has been in the morning sky since it passed between us and the Sun on January 11th, but its time of greatest brilliancy means its reign in the morning sky has barely begun. Why? Well, imagine Venus and Earth as being two runners on a racetrack with Venus on the inside lane and Earth on the outer lane. Venus would rapidly catch up with us but would take longer to disappear away from us as we chase after her.

B

ecause Venus lies between us and the Sun, we can only see it when it is either to the left of the Sun (Eastern elongation) or to the right of

the Sun (Western elongation). At Eastern elongation it sets after the Sun in the evening sky and at Western elongation it rises before the Sun in the mornings.

I

t will reach greatest Western elongation (i.e. the most extreme point to the right of the Sun) on March 22nd. Then it will rise about one and a half hours before the Sun and will appear as an unmistakable dazzlingly bright diamond in the pre-dawn sky.

W

hen you observe Venus through a telescope it displays phases similar to those of the Moon. When it is on the far side of the Sun (superior conjunction) it appears full faced lit but is at its most distant from us and so appearing very small. As it moves around the Sun toward us we see less and less of the ‘lit’ side but in the meantime it is getting closer to us and so growing in apparent size. Eventually it passes between us and the Sun (inferior conjunction) and we cannot see it at all. So it is a trade-off, apparent size against percentage of illumination. Right now is the best of both worlds (so to speak). Venus is almost at maximum western elongation and it is about half way between furthest and closest point to us.

V

enus outshines all other objects in the night sky not only because of its closeness to us but also because it is completely covered in a thick blanket of carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide clouds. These clouds reflect the sunlight towards us making it dazzle. But for Venus itself these clouds are causing a runaway greenhouse effect so the temperature at the surface is raging at over 450°C –hot enough to melt lead. It rains sulphuric acid, and molten lava runs in rivers across the landscape. If ever an image of Hell could be imagined then the surface of Venus fits the bill.

BMW unveils a 2-series tourer the brand's first fwd model BMW have released details and pictures of the 2-series Active Tourer, a minivan rival to the Mercedes-Benz B class that will be the brand's first front-wheel-drive vehicle.

The model is underpinned by BMW Group's UKW front wheel drive architecture that debuted last year on the third-generation Mini hatchback. The 2-series Active Tourer will also be the first BMW to offer a threecylinder engine, a new turbocharged 1.5-litre engine that is also available on the Mini.

The 2-series Active Tourer combines comfort

and functionality with BMW's driving dynamics, BMW said in a statement.

The model will debut at the Geneva auto show on March 4th and will join the rear-wheel-drive 2series coupe in BMW's lineup when it

launches in Europe later this year.

The 2 series Active Tourer's fwd marks a

departure for the BMW brand, traditionally known for its saloons and sporty SUVs. The vehicle's front wheel drive platform is sure to upset BMW purists who have always valued

the driving dynamics of the carmaker's rear wheel drive models, but BMW will remain a very much a rear wheel drive company,

development director Herbert Diess said The 2-series Active Tourer is a response to customers downsizing from larger saloons, especially in Europe, he said. BMW plans about 30 rear wheel drive models and 15 front wheel drive vehicles, including Mini-badged models. Diess said the company is still discussing if and when to launch other front wheel drive BMWs. He said the platform has considerable flexibility because it can underpin midsized models up to 4600mm long, as well as compact vehicles and Minis.

Schumacher's head-cam 'may have acted like hammer on his skull' The skiing crash that left Michael Schumacher in a coma may have been made far worse by the camera he wore on his helmet, according to an early report from the investigators. Schumacher was skiing in Meribel at the end of last year when he hit a bump and landed on his head. French investigators closed the investigation into the crash on Monday morning, coming to the conclusion that there was no wrongdoing by any individual

The full report has not yet been released, however, and there remains speculation over the circumstances of the incident. Media reports over the past few days have suggested that the camera Schumacher was using to film his teenage son may have exacerbated the effects of the collision, with the theory being that a "shock effect" of the camera hitting the rock might have made it act as a hammer .

"The helmet completely broke, it was in at least two parts," a source close to the investigation is quoted as saying in several media reports.

"Ensa (the investigation body) received one piece of helmet to check the material and all was ok. But why did it explode on impact?

"Here the camera comes into question. The laboratory is testing to see if the camera weakened the structure".

Franck Leplanquais of sports equipment test lab CRITT explained how the camera could have been to blame in an interview with the Cologne Express.

"The camera is another element between rock and skull, and at the wrong angle could lead to a 'shock-effect', cracking the helmet." Helmet manufacturer Uvex confirmed to the same paper that "a camera may affect the protective effect" of any

helmet, depending on the circumstances of the crash.

Schumacher was woken from his artificially-induced coma

earlier this month, and is reportedly able to respond to basic commands, though experts have warned that he faces a long and arduous recovery.

No BAFTA for Rush Ron Howard's recreation of the 1976 F1 world championship was thwarted in its pursuit of headline success in the 2014 BAFTA film awards, although it did win one technical category. Motorsport movie Rush emerged from Sunday night's BAFTA awards ceremony with a single success, but was denied in the two leading categories where it had received a nomination.

The film's sole win came among the technical awards, where Dan Hanley and Mike Hill picked up one of the famous 'mask' trophies for their editing talents, but elsewhere Ron Howard's recreation of the 1976 F1 world championship battle between James Hunt and Niki Lauda came up empty-handed. In all, the film had picked up four

nominations, but saw its bid for Outstanding British Film thwarted by the all-conquering Gravity, while Daniel Bruhl, who played Lauda opposite Chris Hemsworth's Hunt, was denied Best Supporting Actor honours by Captain Phillips' Barkhad Abdi. The final nominations, in the Sound category, also went the way of Gravity. Rush had previously earned two Golden Globe nominations – for 'Best Motion Picture – Drama' and 'Best Supporting Actor' – without winning either, but was not recognised at all for an 'Oscar' by the 86th Academy Awards.

Curlers make the semi’s

He said: "It's just tremendous; it's great to get into the semi-finals. We've had fantastic support through the week and that game was absolutely incredible. "

Great Britain's Men's and Women's curlers both came through their groups to reach the Winter Olympic semi-finals in Sochi.

The GB women beat Russia 9-6 but lost 8-7 to Denmark on Monday, and they will play Canada in the last four today (Wednesday).

"Our first goal was to finish top four and that's exactly what we've done," skip Eve Muirhead (pictured) told BBC Sport. Muirhead led the women's team to a 9-6 win over Russia in the early game on Monday before a combination of other results meant they were through.

The men reached the semi-finals after beating Norway 6-5 in a tense play-

off. They will now face Sweden, also on Wednesday for a place in either the gold medal match, or the bronze game.

In a tight affair at the Ice Cube in Sochi, a superb final shot by skip David Murdoch, where he took out two Norway stones to score a double, saw Great Britain through. Murdoch has finished fourth and fifth in the previous two Winter Olympics.

Speed Skating

Britain's Elise Christie safely reached the quarterfinals of the short track women's 1,000m with an assured skate after a week of turmoil at Sochi. Christie, 23, has suffered online abuse and twice been disqualified so far at the Winter Olympics, but the 1,000m is her favourite – and final – event. The Scot stayed well clear of the pack then accelerated around the outside for the easiest of victories in her heat.

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips Continued from last week

Pot size

I touched on this in the last section. In headsup pots, if you are in position, you always have the option of closing the betting for the current street. This is crucial to manipulating the pot size. It allows you to check behind against LAGs when you have a strong draw and are suspicious of a check raise, draw cheaply against passive players, or value bet calling stations when they check to you on every street. Don’t get caught out pushing top pair all the way to the river though (unless you are playing a known fish). I know this is shorthanded, but against good, solid opponents, relative hand values won’t be that far from full ring when it gets to the turn and the river and big bets are going in.

Planning ahead

The biggest decision in most NL hands is usually made on the flop. Mostly you’ll be in raised pots, hopefully in position (if you are isolating correctly!) and it’s at this point that you have to decide what your plan for the whole hand is. DON’T call the flop without a plan for the turn based on whether your opponent bets or checks, or a nasty card falls. DON’T bet if you haven’t thought about your plan if you face a check raise. Often, I’ll plan the whole hand on the flop, regardless of what falls. Say I raise As Qd from the button and get called by a very bluffy LAG from the big blind. The flop comes Ad

8h 3c and the BB bets into me. Here, I’ll sometime decide to exploit his bluffing tendency on such a dry board by calling every street, and raising/value betting the river depending on how the board looks. The point is, I had a plan for future streets. Your plans can change, there’s nothing wrong with that. Just make sure you have some to start with.

Play your draws hard

Due to the aggressive nature of 6-max, you need to be pushing a bit harder postflop than you would do in full ring. Most people know this, but they go about it in completely the wrong way. Instead of pushing hands with an almost guaranteed decent amount of equity, they start value betting their top pair no kickers and middle pairs more, building pots that are far too big when they could be a huge underdog. A much better approach is to semibluff your draws pretty relentlessly. This has two main advantages over pushing mediocre made hands: You have a solid amount of equity on the flop againt all but the very biggest of hands. You build a big pot if called, so if you do hit, it’s much easier to stack your opponent. The second point is quite important as a lot of players forget to take this into consideration. If you play your draw passively, not only does it LOOK like a draw, cutting your implied odds, but when you hit, it is going to be difficult to get all the money in without help

from your opponent. So, as a default I always look to bet my flush and straight draws on the flop, and usually the turn too. The exception to this is against very aggro players where it’s often better to check and call, guaranteeing you another card with good implied odds, rather than betting and being raised off your draw. Also, combo draws should be played even harder than this as they usually have around 50% equity, and with fold equity added in they are hugely profitable. You should aim to get the last bet in (all in) on the flop with hands similar to these: Open Ended straight draw + Flush Draw Top Pair + Flush Draw Middle pair + Gutshot + Flush Draw Nut flush Draw + 2 Overcards. All these types of hands have a lot of equity with two cards to come, and need to be played as fast as possible.

Always be aggressive

If there’s one thing you need to take out of this article, it’s to be aggressive. There are countless profitable styles you can employ at this game, but virtually every single one will centre on being aggressive. Don’t be afraid to use your chips as a weapon, and force your opponents into difficult decisions. Remember, you only profit when your opponents make mistakes. Give them a chance to do just that.

Miraflores singles The highlight of every club’s bowling season is the annual singles championships when the members play for the honour of being either Men's or Ladies' club champion and the opportunity to represent the club at the annual Costa del Sol Champion of Champions event held in April. This year's competition which was held at the beginning of February re-inforced the qualities that need to be exhibited to achieve that ultimate goal.

Marie left & winner Esther

In the Ladies' competition the semi-finals were between defending champion and five-times winner Pam Shemmings & Marie Hurst (winner of the recent Club drawn pairs event) and Esther Gatter & Ann Rowley (a repeat of this season's Ladies 2-wood singles semi-final). In the

match between Pam & Marie scores were fairly even after 23 ends. Marie though held her nerve to take the next two ends and win 21-19. In the other semi-final Ann got off to a flying start but Esther clawed her way back into the match and retained the initiative to run out the winner 21-17 after 26 ends.

In the Men's competition the semi-finals were between Graham Rowley (finalist in 2013) & Tony Gatter and Craig Lewis & Derek Carr (defending champion). Things were evenly balanced in the match between Graham & Tony with the score 8-9 after 9 ends, then Tony took control to win the match comfortably 21-11. In the other semi-final Craig started well, Derek fought back but despite his best efforts was never able to significantly close the gap leaving Craig a comfortable 21-10 winner. In the Ladies’ final we had Marie playing against Esther. Esther started very strongly to be 10-2 up after 6 ends, but Marie was not going to give up easily and succeeded in taking the

lead 14-12. Esther then regained the initiative shutting out Marie to take the match and the championship 21-14. In the Men's final, it was Craig against Tony. Craig took an early lead to be 8-1 up after 7 ends, however, Tony gradually pulled his way back into the match to get within 3 shots of Craig at 18-15 after 22 ends. That was as far as the comeback went though as Craig scored 3 shots on the next end to win 21-15.

Tony left & winner Craig

In his closing remarks when presenting the trophies Club President Derek congratulated all the finalists on the quality of play and remarked how good it was to see two new names on the honours board for this the club's premier competition. By Grant Frost

Pussy Riot band 'arrests in Sochi'

Two members of the protest group Pussy Riot say they have been arrested in the Russian resort of Sochi where the Winter Olympics are being held. Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, who were freed from jail in December, Tweeted that they had been detained in the centre of the town on suspicion of a criminal offence. They spent two years in prison for a protest song in a Moscow cathedral. The town of Sochi is some distance from where the Games are taking place.

Malaga miss out again Malaga 0 - 1 Real Sociedad

The game started at a frantic pace and following an earlier scare, Real Sociedad were having another shot at Caballero’s goal after eight minutes. Seferovic’s pressure from the front led to him dispossessing Camacho and finding Carlos Vela, whose tame shot, oneon-one with Caballero, led to the Argentine goalkeeper making light work of the effort. Two minutes later, Vela would make amends for the earlier poor finish with his 10th league goal of the season. Pardo’s cross-field ball found Griezmann who controlled it and laid it off to Jose Angel on the overlap. The Spanish full-back sprinted into the box and squared the ball to Vela who finished off a good move. A really well worked goal that even the Malaga fans appreciated. Malaga though

reacted positively to the goal and they pushed on with some attacks of their own. Malaga were looking dangerous and Amrabat was making runs down the right-hand side. In the 24th minute, one of his crosses found Iakovenko in the box, but in going up for the ball he instead connected with Inigo Martinez’s elbow. Blood pumped out of his head almost instantly, stretchers came on but he would later return to the pitch with a bandaged head. Malaga dominated throughout the first-half but were restricted to long-range shots due to Real Sociedad’s tight defending through the middle. Despite Malaga’s dominance, Real Sociedad always looked likelier to score on the counter despite being pegged into their own half. When the second half started Malaga made an immediate change with Duda coming on for Portillo,

Malaga were hoping that their set piece specialist might be able to give them something. In the 55th minute, Caballero saved comfortably from Seferovic, who shot from just outside the box. Malaga got their first chance of the game a minute later after Real’s Inigo Martinez headed the ball into Duda’s path. The Portuguese midfielder attempted to lob Claudio Bravo, but the Chilean goalkeeper plucked it out of the air effortlessly. Real Sociedad’s defense were keeping Malaga at bay as the half continued. Malaga continued to dominate but really lacked someone to play the final ball. Sub, Santa Cruz got the fans going with two chances, and Malaga deserved to get something from the game, but it wasn’t to be. Next game is away to Almeria on Saturday at 9.00pm
