Rob Purcell from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said: "It was very hard for us to initially get that fire to stop due to the fact that the winds were blowing up towards the airport."

Some residents have been ordered to leave and flames have spread to the outer suburbs of Australia's second biggest city, Melbourne.

It was Australia's deadliest natural disaster of the modern era.

Fire crews said they saved about 550 properties from an intense blaze at suburban Keilor, near Melbourne's airport.

WORLD Bushfires sweep across southICKHAM’S

By Kym Wickham

They’re off!

k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

Well, that’s that then. BBC went first, then ITV channels went, despite people saying it would be against the law for them to not provide us with their stations. No more Call The Midwife or Mr Portillo and his trains. No more Homes under the Hammer, Escape to the Country or The Sherrifs are coming, and what a shame it is to lose them. Still, there are many more channels to choose from and there will be lots of ways devised, no doubt, for you to get them back again. We’ll keep you informed of developments as and when they happen but, at the end of the day, perhaps we’ll communicate more with our families, go out more and maybe, just maybe it will give a bit of a kick start to the economy by our doing that. One lives in hopes! This coming week sees Valentine’s Day on Friday and many restaurants and bars will be decking their places out with wonderful hearts and flowers everywhere. There will be special entertainment and menus all over the Costa and inland so why not make the most of it and go out and enjoy what’s on offer. Oh, yes... and if you have an “other half” for God’s sake don’t forget that card at least or you’ll be right in the doghouse ... you have been warned! My fabulous husband (and I don’t use the term lightly, he really is one of the best) always comes up with a brilliant card and we either go to one of the restaurants for a special meal, go away to an hotel and sample a local restaurant – last year it was French in Roquetas – or he cooks me one at home. My man is a very good cook and one of my favourites is a Greek dish of lamb shoulder roasted in the oven with pieces of garlic and rosemary stuffed into little slits in the skin. Buyrite Supermarket in Coin has some in (and at a very reasonable cost too) so we have also given you a recipe this week on Kym’s Kitchen (page 21) to give you another idea of how to cook a shoulder of lamb. Yummy!

According to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology, they followed the country's hottest year on record, which gave the fires a political edge. Environmentalists have referred to Australia as the Petri dish of climate change, a place where the global warming "experiment" is actuality being tested out in reality.

Australia's new conservative Prime Minister Tony Abbott was reluctant to accept that view. A volunteer firefighter himself who gave up his day job to man the hoses on occasion, once described the science behind human-induced climate change as "absolute crap". The Coin News Group S.L. Prosecutor seeks 19 years for princess’s husband

After Princess Cristina’s appearance in court in Palma de Mallorca on Saturday, the anticorruption prosecutor in the Nóos investigation, Pedro Horrach, said she should not be implicated in the business dealings of her husband, former Olympic handball medalist Iñaki Urdangarin, and that over half of the 40 official suspects in the case should not face charges.

But he went on to ask for a prison sentence of 19 years for Urdangarin and 15 years for his former business partner Diego Torres. They are both charged with embezzlement, falsifying documents, tax fraud and other financial crimes. As for Princess Christina, Horrach said he will recommend she pays €600,000 in civil liability for being co-owner of the real estate firm Aizoon, one of the companies used by Urdangarin and into which he pumped €1.7 million of illicit money. Horrach said Carlos García Revenga, the royal secretary to Princess Cristina and her elder sister, Elena, should face no charges, and neither should Torres’ wife, Ana María Tejeiro.

Trusted her husband

Cristina arrived at the Palma de Mallorca courthouse just before 10 on Saturday, smiling and nodding at a barrage of photographers kept behind a rail by police as she got out of the car that delivered her to the back entrance of the courthouse. At the front entrance to the court, around 200 protesters yelling insults and carrying Republican flags and signs calling for the abolition of the monarchy, were held back by police.

During the ensuing six hours of testimony,

Princess Cristina declined to answer most of the questions put to her by Judge José Castro about her expenses and the income she received from a real estate business. He specifically asked the princess about her husband’s financial affairs and her role at the defunct Nóos Institute, which is the subject of an ongoing inquiry into an alleged scheme to divert public funds paid out by two regional governments for sports and tourism events.

Although the session was held behind closed doors, lawyers who were inside the courtroom later told reporters that Cristina had avoided most of the judge’s questions, saying “I don’t know” and “I have no knowledge about that.” She also told Judge Castro that she knew nothing about the day-to-day operations at Urdangarin’s Nóos Institute, even though she was on the board of directors, or at the Aizoon real estate firm. “I trusted my husband,” the princess said, referring to decisions made in both enterprises, and denied any wrongdoing.

It is the first time a member of the royal family has been subpoenaed by a judge in a criminal inquiry, but sources inside the Royal Household have said they

are confident that after hearing her testimony, Judge Castro will remove the princess as an official target in the investigation.

Leaked footage “unspeakable”

The princess's testimony was supposed to have been held in a closed session, and all the people allowed into the court had to leave mobile phones, laptops, tablets and other recording devices with the police at the entrance at the courthouse. However, El Mundo on Sunday published an image of the king’s daughter during her sixhour appearance taken from a video posted on the internet. The chief judge in Palma de Mallorca, Francisco González, expressed his “indignation” at the breach of protocol and opened an investigation to find the source of the leaked footage. “Either they didn’t go through the metal detectors or the device was a ridiculous size,” he said. On Monday Judge Castro called the leak “unspeakable” and said he had “an idea of who might have been behind it,” but that he could not reveal anything further at this stage. The princess's husband had asked the Palma de Mallorca court not to videotape his testimony last February precisely because he feared it would be leaked to the media.

Immigrant death toll reaches 15

At least 15 people drowned in last Thursday’s tragic attempt by a large group of migrants to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The search for bodies continued on Tuesday as the Guardia Civil came under fire for allegedly shooting at the dozens of migrants trying to swim from Morocco.

The victims either drowned or died after heavy waves slammed them against the sixmetre high wall that extends some distance out to the Mediterranean

and acts as a barrier that divides Ceuta and Morocco. The Guardia have denied the allegation.

The incident occurred after Guardia security cameras along the 8.2 kilometre perimeter captured images of a large group of migrants descending from a field near the Tangier highway and closing in on the Moroccan security post at Bab Septa. Moroccan security forces alerted the Guardia that they were approaching. The Spanish

government’s delegate in Ceuta, Francisco Antonio González, said that the migrants were “aggressive” and began throwing rocks and other objects at authorities. Guardia officials said that they used their anti-riot gear “to dissuade” the migrants from rushing the border, which was closed off for 30 minutes. As they reached the highway, about 200 tried to swim around the seawall as the Moroccan authorities began controlling the situation.

There is a deep divide between what the Catholic Church says and what its followers believe, a new international poll by Bendixen & Amandi for the Spanish-language US television network Univisión has revealed. It showed a huge gap between Church doctrine and many Spaniards’ views on issues such as same-sex marriage, abortion, divorce and contraception. Only eight percent of the 1,000 respondents said they were against abortion in all cases, compared with 88 per cent who support it in all or some situations. The Spanish Episcopal Conference recently said that “nobody has the right, in any circumstance, to take away the life of an innocent human being. Sephardic Jews get fast naturalisation

the government has announced new measures to speed up the naturalisation of Jews of Sephardic descent whose ancestors fled the iberian peninsula five centuries ago when they were told to convert to Catholicism or leave the country. the cabinet approved a bill last Friday amending previous legislation that granted nationality by naturalisation to Sephardic – Hebrew for "Spanish" – Jews who chose to apply for it.

In it, ETA referred to "significant contributions to feed the peace process, without delay" – a statement which left most people scratching their heads. Basque regional premier Iñigo Urkullu has asked Prime Minister Rajoy to be receptive to this new attitude.

On January 11th, for the first time, Urkullu's mainstream nationalist PNV officially joined proETA radicals in a street demonstration, and he has allegedly also asked Rajoy to accept ETA's demand to have its prisoners transferred to Basque jails.

Official policy has been to keep them in jails all over the country to stop them getting together and conspiring to commit more violent acts. However, the government's attitude is no concessions can be made to ETA prisoners until the group disarms and disbands.

Companies in the sector also increased their staffing levels slightly in January, ending a run of 70 consecutive months of job cutting. all six of the market segments surveyed by markit posted increases in activity, led by transport and storage. Companies were upbeat about an improvement in economic conditions this year, in which economy minister Luis de Guindos has predicted that output could rise by 1.0 percent. Business confidence looking a year ahead was also at its highest level since July 2007.

Electricity auctions to disappear the

WEDNESDAY, February 12th 2014

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

In an interview with El Pais newspaper, State secretary for energy Alberto Nadal said that the auctions which set the price of electricity for homeowners will disappear in April, to give way to a “simpler” system.

Nadal explained that the variable part of the utility bill, which represents 45 per cent of the total price to be paid

by consumers, with the rest being a fixed rate, will be set in accordance with the average price on the wholesale market. He said this will “allow significant savings for residential consumers”.

Under the previous system, the price of energy was established by an auction system that set a constant price for three months. He said it was

"very complex, with lots of intermediaries, and it generated significant surcharges for consumers”.

The public reacted angrily last December, when the auction looked as if it would force consumer rates up by at least 11 per cent for January this year. In response, the government opened an investigation

to determine whether power companies were colluding to raise the price of electricity but found no evidence of wrongdoing. However, the government decreed that the price hike in January could not exceed 2.3 per cent.

The cost of electricity rose an average 4.5 per cent last year, and has gone up by nearly 80 per

cent in the past decade. Electricity bills in Spain are among the highest in Europe, with only the

people of Ireland and Cyprus having to pay more.

EU neighbours regret N Swiss vote

inDOneSiA

France and Germany have voiced concern about Switzerland's vote to bring back strict quotas for immigration from European Union countries.

Final results showed 50.3% voted in favour. Fiercely independent Switzerland is not a member of the EU, but has adopted large sections of EU policy. The European Commission said it regretted the outcome of the vote and would examine its implications.

Freedom of movement is a key pillar of the EU single market – a market which accounts for more than half of Swiss exports. Switzerland's bilateral

agreements with the EU took years of negotiation to achieve, and abandoning free movement could limit Switzerland's access to the single market.

The initiative to hold the referendum was spearheaded by the rightwing Swiss People's Party (SVP), amid increasing debate across Europe about migration and the impact of free movement of people. Observers said the vote had shown up traditional divisions, with

French-speaking areas against the quotas, German-speaking regions divided, and the Italianspeaking canton of Ticino firmly in favour. In addition, cities with higher than average numbers of foreigners – Basel, Geneva and Zurich – voted against the quota proposal, while rural areas mostly voted for it. The initiative means employers should in future give preference to Swiss passport-holders. But the

Swiss government and business leaders say free movement is key to Switzerland's economic success, allowing employers to choose skilled staff from across Europe. Last year 80,000 new immigrants arrived in Switzerland, and foreigners now make up 23% of the population. It has the continent's second highest foreign population after Luxembourg.

China and Taiwan in first government talks China and Taiwan have begun the highest-level talks since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. Wang Yu-chi and Zhang Zhijun, the top cross-strait officials from each side, are both attending the four-day talks in Nanjing. Taiwanese officials said they would raise the issue

of press freedom after Beijing denied access to some media outlets.

Speaking to reporters before departing from Taiwan, Mr Wang, head of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, said he hoped the visit, which "did not come easily", would go smoothly,

adding that the two sides would not be signing any agreements during the talks. Given the sensitivities, the meeting room had no flags on display, and the officials' nameplates had no titles or affiliations, AFP news agency reported. China insists that Taiwan is a

part of its territory and has a stated aim of reclaiming the island.

Taiwan still calls itself the Republic of China and nominally claims the same territory as the Communist government in Beijing, although it does not press these claims.

Australian drug trafficker freed

Convicted Australian drug trafficker Schapelle Corby has been released on parole after nine years in prison in Bali, indonesia. Corby was convicted and jailed for 20 years in 2005 for trying to smuggle marijuana into the tourist island. The 36-year-old has protested her innocence since she was caught entering Bali in 2004 with marijuana hidden in one of her bags. She was granted parole last Friday in Bali but it was only implemented on Monday. She is unlikely to be able to return to Australia immediately because she will have to remain in indonesia until 2017 to fulfil the conditions of her parole. Corby had received several remissions throughout her sentence because of good behaviour. Five years was shaved off it in 2012 after an appeal for clemency to the president. Her release was welcomed in Australia, but drew criticism from some indonesian lawmakers and an anti-drugs group, who said it violated anti-drugs laws that are supposed to be stringently enforced.

Legal rights for same-sex spouses extended

The US is to make changes to the justice system to give greater legal recognition to same-sex marriages. in a speech on Saturday at a Human Rights Campaign dinner in new York, Attorney General eric Holder said the Justice Department had a role in "confronting discrimination". Benefits will include couples being exempt from having to testify against each other in court, and having equal rights to visits in federal prisons. Same-sex marriages are currently legal in 17 US states and in Washington DC. Other states grant some marital benefits to gay couples, while others have banned gay marriage outright. However, the new ruling will apply to federal matters in all states, whether or not they recognise gay unions, as long as the couple married legally in a state which does. Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said the announcement would "change the lives of countless committed gay and lesbian couples for the better".

McDonald's opens first outlet

Fast-food giant McDonald's has opened its first restaurant in communist-controlled Vietnam. Hundreds of people queued for the opening in Ho Chi Minh, known as Saigon during the Vietnam War, where the US-backed government was based until it fell to communist forces 38 years ago. its owner, Henry nguyen, who is married to the daughter of Prime Minister nguyen Tan Dung, flipped burgers at a McDonald's restaurant while a teenager growing up in the United States, where his family fled at the end of the war. He said that it had been his dream to open a McDonald's since returning to Vietnam more than a decade ago. The move underlines Vietnam's hunger for Western consumer brands, Despite the Vietnamese economy's recent slowdown, foreign brands are popular among the youthful population whose parents had few of the food and lifestyle options now available in the country. Starbucks, Subway, Burger King, and KFC all have a presence there.

Vigilantes drive out drug cartel

Vigilante groups paraded on Sunday through a stronghold of the Knights Templar drug cartel, Apatzingan in Michoacan state, backed by armoured vehicles and troops and shouting slogans before convening at the city's main square. The groups began an offensive last month aimed at ending the drug gang's activities in Michoacan. The government recently reached a pact with the groups, granting them temporary legal status by redefining them as Rural Defence Corps. The Knights Templar cartel controls much of the drug trafficking in the area, carrying out killings and kidnappings and extorting money from local people. Members of the patrols met government forces on the outskirts of the city to discuss their next steps following Sunday's action. Vigilante leaders, joined by the official security forces and the army, have been searching house by house for leaders of the Knights Templar. More than 70,000 people have died in drug related violence across Mexico in the past six years.

More Syrians flee besieged city the

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Some 300 Syrians have fled Homs after both sides agreed to extend a three-day truce in the Old City, which has been under siege for 18 months. During the first three-day ceasefire in Homs, hundreds of civilians were allowed to leave. The evacuations took place amid mortar fire and shooting, which both sides blamed on each other. Activists say several people were killed. The Syrian government has acknowledged that some of those evacuated from Homs on Sunday were detained after they left. A Syrian information ministry spokesman told reporters that 103 "militants" had been detained for security checks, and had since been released. But other reports suggest the men have not been released, and are still being detained with their families. Meanwhile, government and opposition negotiators have resumed peace talks

in Geneva. Analysts say that little progress is expected. The first round of talks ended last month with no firm agreements and both sides trading insults. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said France and other countries would present a resolution at the UN calling for greater access for humanitarian aid. He told French radio: "It is absolutely scandalous that there have been

discussions for quite a while and that people are still being starved every day, and so along with a number of other countries we will present a resolution at the UN along those lines." China and Russia did not turn up to preliminary discussions on the draft. Syria's civil conflict has claimed more than 100,000 lives since 2011 and has driven 9.5 million people from their homes.

European Union to negotiate with Cuba

The EU has agreed to launch negotiations with Cuba aimed at restoring full bilateral relations with the Communist-run island. The talks, which could begin as soon as next month, will try to increase trade and investment, and include a dialogue on human rights, officials said. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton stressed that human rights remained "at the core" of its dealings with Cuba. The announcement comes with Cuba engaged in an economic and social reform process launched by President Raul Castro.

In 1996, the EU agreed on a set of rules governing its relations with Cuba, called the Common Position, which states that the EU's objective is "to encourage a process of transition to a pluralist democracy and respect for human rights and

fundamental freedoms, as well as sustainable recovery and improvement in the living standards of the Cuban people".

Despite the policy, more than half of EU member states have bilateral agreements with Cuba. Cuba has rejected the Common Position, arguing that it constitutes an interference in its internal affairs.

Cuban President Raul Castro

The EU ambassador to Havana, Herman Portocarero, said the talks came in response to "serious" changes in Cuba, but he added that the EU had a number of "red lines" in order for the relations to be normalised. These included such issues as human rights and the possibility for civil society groups to have legal status. The move indicates the most important diplomatic shift since the EU lifted sanctions against Cuba in 2008. The EU is Cuba's second-biggest trading partner after Venezuela. It represents a major source of investment, and hundreds of thousands of European tourists visit the island every year.

UK

Our television screens have been filled with pictures of waves the height of three story houses, destruction of sea defences and, particularly graphic, both tracks of the Westcountry mainline railway suspended in midair in Dawlish, Devon, (pictured) for 30 metres where the sea has torn through the sea wall and taken away the track bed. The problem of flooding remains and where the waters had receded they have risen yet again and there remain serious problems in many parts of the country with new flood warnings in place. At one stage there were no railway services to Exeter in the South West of England because of

flooding on the track, and a landslip on another track blocked an alternative route. And there remain no services to Plymouth, a large city which recently closed its airport. It is linked to the rest of Britain by a dual carriageway road with a particularly poor safety record. The Prince of Wales and Prime Minister David Cameron have both been on the Somerset Levels to view the damage and discuss the issues. It appears that there is now a consensus of opinion that the levels will in future have to be managed in the old way, which involves dredging the

rivers, to allow a greater volume of water to escape to the sea. Unfortunately work cannot begin until the waters recede and it will take some time. Meanwhile the emergency services are doing all they can in extremely difficult circumstances. Royal Marines from 40 Commando are involved in the operation, but the water has nowhere to go and there is tangible sense of exasperation at the news that there is more rain on the way.

I suspect many readers will share my experience of the prevalence of lung disease resulting from smoking. I have people close to me whose mobility has been seriously compromised.

And I recently bumped into a woman I worked with in a newspaper office for several years who told me her specialist had explained to her that although she did not smoke her health had been affected by her husband’s smoking. I see Mayor of London Boris Johnson has now

teamed up with medical professionals to urge Members of Parliament to vote to outlaw smoking in cars carrying children.

The MPs are to be given a free vote on the issue. There are those who believe it will be unenforceable, and the continuing use of mobile telephones in cars suggests they may have a case, but the ban is backed by cancer charities and it would send a message to parents who smoke. If a good number of adults fall in line, then campaigners will feel that a ban is fully justified.

Diabetes affects six per cent of adults The number of people with diabetes in the UK now stands at six per cent of the adult population. A large increase in type 2 diabetes has been linked to obesity and lack of exercise. Some of the increase could be down to improved diagnosis. Even so, it is recognised that many

people still have the disease without knowing it. According to Cardiff University researchers the use of insulin to control the disease has trebled over the last 20 years. The disease accounts for 10p in every pound the National Health Service spends.

Britain’s war on wasted tax receipts One of Britain’s most influential lobbying groups in the UK is the TaxPayers’ Alliance, which campaigns for lower taxes and generally has the ear of the coalition government. It is interesting to note that the organisation is now suggesting that as much as one pound in every six of public money spent is unwarranted, enough to wipe out the

country’s deficit with money to spare, it says. In its latest press release the alliance has produced a catalogue of failures to control spending that makes embarrassing reading. The great thing is that Government really is listening. Last year it made savings of £10 billion and is determined to do much more to cut down on waste in Whitehall.

Confidential files containing the personal details of some customers of Barclays Bank in Britain have been stolen and sold to rogue traders. They in turn have persuaded some customers to buy rare earth metals which do not exist. According to the bank, the stolen files relate to information provided to the Barclays’ financial planning operation that ceased as a service to customers in 2011. The story broke in The Mail on Sunday newspaper. A spokesperson for Barclays confirmed that the bank was investigating the matter and was contacting customers who might be affected.

Trade deficit narrows

The UK’s trade deficit was at a 17-month low in December, falling from £3.8 billion in November to £1 billion. It was the lowest monthly figure since July 2012.

Record exports were boosted by oil, chemicals and aircraft sales, with a fall in imports of aircraft and ships. Manufacturing expanded by only 0.3 per cent over the month, but optimism among firms is at its highest level for two decades. The number of people in the UK who are insolvent has fallen to its lowest level in eight years according to the latest figures. LIVERPOOL

The Beatles are still filling the airwaves some 50 years after making a lot of their hits and the band is back in the news again because jackets worn by George Harrison and Ringo Starr in the photograph featured on the cover of the ‘Help’ album are to be sold at auction next month. The film of the same name was made in 1965 and the jackets were worn throughout production. The coats are part of 200 Beatles’ lots being sold in Liverpool to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the number one hit ‘Can’t Buy Me Love.’

“Water World”: That’s what they’re calling the south of England now WEDNESDAY, February 12th 2014

theNews Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Calls were being made on Tuesday for the Government to divert some of its £11 billion foreign aid budget to those people in the UK hit by the recent floods. Parts of the Thames Valley have been declared a “major incident” area by police.

Those hit by floods in the West Country and Thames Valley in particular are saying that if money was diverted even for a couple of months from the foreign aid budget, much could be done for those whose homes have been wrecked by flooding. People are angry that dredging of rivers hasn’t been carried out “for years” and it is barely in living memory that people have had to leave their homes – the last time there was severe flooding to the region was in the 1940s. Dredging of rivers and canals was regularly carried out in past years but councils have

repeatedly blamed a lack of funds for not carrying on these very necessary works.

Politicians

And the invasion of senior politicians into flood-hit areas has started to backfire, with local communities accusing them of being little more than 'flood tourists' in search of a photo opportunity. Tory Member of Parliament for Reading West, which is on the Thames, Alok Sharma accused Labour leader Ed Miliband of “failing to do his homework” as he stood in his wellingtons while posing for photographs in a street in Purley, Berkshire. He asked Mr. Miliband: “Why are you actually here? What I am hearing from local residents is they are not actually interested in people just coming for a photo opportunity talking about local issues when

they don't know what is going on locally. I wish you had done a bit of homework before you turned up here.”

Residents in all areas have complained that there is not enough help being sent to them and Defence Secretary Philip Hammond was berated live on TV by angry volunteers demanding to know why troops had not been sent in to help flood communities. The Defence Secretary’s attempts to reassure people near the Thames that he had put the military on standby did little to reassure people in Wraysbury. During uncomfortable exchanges on television, Miss Burrows, a local volunteer, said just eight police officers had been on duty to provide help overnight.”We had eight people last night, eight. We need men. We need sandbags, we need sandbags, just let me

finish. We had sandbags being delivered last night that were hijacked,” she said.

Mr Hammond tried to interject that he had been told an hour ago that combined police and military team was collecting sandbags for distribution.

But she hit back: ‘That’s the first we’ve heard of it. Who is unloading them when they get here? Who is co-ordinating them, there is nobody here coordinating those efforts, apart from us and we are not being communicated with,” adding the entire operation to close roads and redirect traffic was being run by volunteers with little or no help from the emergency services. “We are directing people where they need to go not the police, we are directing the police. We are directing the parking officers of the royal borough where they need to go to manage traffic. We are telling them where they need to close the roads. We have got rotas at the end of every single road managing traffic telling them where they can and cannot go. Why are the military not doing this, why is the EA not doing this? These guys have not slept… we are tired. We need people.”

Soldiers

On Tuesday at just after 1pm it was reported that soldiers and firefighters were rescuing people from flooded homes on the

banks of the River Thames following the televised interview on Monday, and troops have now been deployed in Chertsey, Surrey, and in Wraysbury, Berkshire. Emergency services are going from street to street, helping people whose homes are under threat from record water levels.

Stacks of sandbags – described as "like gold dust" by one shopkeeper – have been brought in to shore up defences, while police in Surrey have released £10m to tackle the crisis.

There are fears up to 4,000 more properties could be inundated, with further severe weather forecast for the rest of the week.

Evacuated

Residents have been evacuated this week from the Surrey and Berkshire regions of Egham, Shepperton, Bourne End and Wraysbury among others, including some of the Queen’s servants. Her Page, Paul Whybrew, 56, known as “Tall Paul” who was seen in the spoof footage of Her Majesty walking along a corridor with “James Bond” for the Olympics, and Head Housekeeper, Rachel Gordon, 40, whose house is built on a bridge close to the Windsor Farm Shop, have both seen their historic turreted grace and favour houses in Windsor Home Park engulfed by the rapidly rising waters and have had to de-camp into Windsor Castle until

the waters recede. Other royal staff who live on the estate had their road cut off on Monday by the rising waters. The castle itself is highly unlikely to be affected as it is built on a hill above the water.

People have been blaming the bursting of the banks of the Thames in some areas on authorities who have diverted water into the Jubilee River and then into the Thames to alleviate rivers in other areas. The Jubilee river protects 3000 properties and 500 businesses from flooding when the river Thames rises by diverting water along an eleven kilometre channel but it is being said that the sluice gates were opened despite the Thames being in flood itself. The Thames barrier, erected to stop central London flooding, has been closed 29 times since the beginning of the year. January was the wettest recorded since 1766.

Biggest non-show on earth Royal pains

T

he media was hyping it as the most important event since the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden but it turned out to be the biggest non-event of the century. I'm referring to Princess Cristina's long awaited appearance in court last Saturday. Since the beginning of the week, the newspapers and TV stations had it on the top of their hype list – would she walk down the "alley of shame" – so-called because protesters would be able to vent their frustration on her – or would she arrive by car, as the judge said she could. Millions of Republicans, antimonarchists, anti-system groups and anarchists were expected to turn up to make it a day the princess would never forget. The media even told how all the stepladders in local hardware stores had sold out – to photographers trying to get a better view. (As it happened, they wasted their money.) The hype reached such a pitch that I awaited the event with dread. Would she be assassinated, would I end up being ashamed – once again – of being a journalist?

I

usually work in the A.I.D. charity shop on Saturday mornings so I wasn't able to watch it all live on TV, but I knew I wouldn't be able to escape the riotous scenes completely because they would dominate the news for the rest of the weekend. I needn't have worried. Cristina arrived by car, which left her 11 steps short of the courthouse door (one journalist kept count). Smiling broadly, she nodded at the journalists corralled behind barriers by a number of policemen – who looked as if they were just waiting for an excuse to start wielding their truncheons.

H

owever, the protesters – all 200 or so of them – were kept well away from the court on the main street, although you could vaguely hear them chanting their slogans in the background. This was just before 10 am, and the day passed very slowly until the princess made her exit just after 6 pm, smiling and nodding at the journalists who by now were almost dropping off to sleep. It had been a long and very booooring day.

N

ow they're speculating about how many years her husband with the unpronounceable name will get – one paper said the prosecutor was asking for a 40-year jail sentence. Most of the other papers put it at 7 to 17 or 19 years. I'm sure King Juan Carlos has already told his daughter her husband will have to spend time in

jail – throwing the wolf to the wolves – to stop the monarchy from becoming even more unpopular. Whether Cristina's marriage will survive is another matter. However, now that the case is nearing its end the media are suddenly discovering aspects of the princess's character which seem to have been kept under wraps. One online newspaper, El Confidencial Digital, now says it was Cristina who set her cap at he with the unpronounceable name, not the other way round. And others are hinting that her disarming smile masks an arrogant, wilful nature. Whatever. The judge is expected to wrap up the case by as early as April, so we'll just have to wait and see how this little drama ends.

A

‘Democratic freedom'

Madrid court has ruled that a protest against home evictions held outside the home of Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría in April of last year should be seen as a “common mechanism of democratic participation of civil society and an expression of the pluralism of the public ." The judges said that while no warning of the hastily arranged protest in the capital – a practice known as an escrache, a word coined in Argentina – had been given, it was also true that there were no violent incidents during the 20-minute demonstration. They said the protest could not be considered as a threat to the minister because there were no indications that the protesters intended to harm her or her family, consisting of a mother who looks after her two year old son while she and her husband are at work. I can't help wondering if the ruling would have been different if the escrache mob had belonged to the Partido Popular and the victim had belonged to the Socialist Party or the United Left.

T

his was what the Mayor of Valladolid, Francisco Javier León de la Riva, wanted to ask Isabel Valledecabres, one of the three judges who issued the ruling. In the past, she has been adviser to three Socialist ministers and she was put forward for a position a substitute judge on the General Judiciary Council – by the Socialist Party. She also helped draw up the Socialist's abortion law. How can you take any ruling by such an obviously sectarian judge seriously? Unfortunately there are too many of them in Spain.

www.thenewsonline.es

Writes for the English language version of

N

ot since President Ronald Reagan uttered his celebrated “I don’t remember” statement when he was asked in 1986 about the approval of an illegal arm sale to Iran has there been such a famous memory lapse as we saw with Princess Cristina on Saturday. No one actually believes that she didn’t know where her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, was getting all his money – she definitely hasn’t been sleeping with the enemy.

B

ut then again the outcome of the court hearing was no shocker. It wasn’t really expected that Princess Cristina would be upfront about her personal finances when she testified before a Palma de Mallorca judge, who has opened a preliminary tax fraud and money-laundering investigation against her. The six hours she spent in a closed-door session did nothing to clear up the battery of questions Judge José Castro fired at King Juan Carlos’s youngest daughter during an historic courtroom appearance. (It was the first time that a member of the royal family had gone to court for a criminal inquiry.) This hearing only served two purposes: it helped to demonstrate how the princess insists on keeping up her stubborn arrogance, and it provided fodder for local and international journalists who huddled outside waiting for real courtroom drama that never unfolded.

A

fter initially fighting the subpoena to appear before the judge, who has been honing in on the business dealings of her husband, the Infanta decided – with much pressure from the royal family – to come forward and answer all the circulating questions concerning whether she took advantage of public money that was allegedly diverted to her spouse’s businesses. For nearly three years, Castro has been looking into allegations that Urdangarin embezzled some €6 million he received from the regional governments of Balearic Islands and Valencia to organise a series of tourism conferences and sports events through

a non-profit entity he set up with his partner, Diego Torres. The Nóos Institute had actually been conceived by Torres in 1999, but didn’t take off until Urdangarin, his former student at Madrid’s ESADE business school, used his royal connections to attract interest. The regional governments gave Nóos large chunks of money without formalising bids. Prosecutors believe that Urdangarin commingled the public funds given to his non-profit NGO with his private business accounts including Aizoon, the real estate firm he co-owned with his wife.

A

fter subsequent police and tax inspector enquiries, Judge Castro decided to call in the princess when he was given evidence that she had purportedly charged a wide-range of personal expenses to the Aizoon accounts. These included bills for communion receptions, birthday parties and dance classes. Her tax statements purportedly show that she didn’t report all the income she may have received from Aizoon. Castro’s first attempt to call her in to testify last April was overruled by a Mallorca provincial court panel, which left open the door for the judge to continue to look at her tax records. When asked about her spending, Cristina said she couldn’t remember submitting any of the bills to Aizoon and stated that she trusted her husband’s handling of all the accounts.

I

t took her more than a week to prepare for her testimony with lawyers from a very influential buffet in Barcelona. Those attorneys no doubt received a generous windfall for their advice in telling her to play dumb. No doubt, however, the preparation was geared on the psychological factor; the lawyers didn’t want her to break down or lose her cool with the tough questions she faced.

R

oyal household sources have said that it was Cristina who had been adamant throughout all this time not to take the stand. This never set well with her family and created a lot of tension with her brother Prince Felipe and his wife Letizia. The king was also convinced that Judge Castro would remove the princess from the list of about 40 official targets in the Nóos inquiry after the royal daughter’s appearance. But the judge left the courtroom more confused than ever while the princess did nothing to help clear up the matter or take a load off her family’s backs.

A harp made by Sebastian Erard in 1819 has joined the collection of the MIMMA thanks to a donation from author and harpist Marion Leigh. After a long journey that began in London on 3rd November 1819, the antique harp arrived early this month at Málaga’s Museo Interactivo de la Música. The magnificent instrument made by Sebastian Erard in October 1819, is the latest addition to the museum thanks to a donation made by author and harpist Marion Leigh. Prior to this kind gift, the museum had three pianos also from the house of Erard in its collection. There are many details that make this an important piece with an impressive provenance: on one side there is the inscription: “TO THE ROYAL FAMILY. His Most Christian Majesty the King of France and H.I.M. the Emperor of all the Russias”, which leads experts to think that the instrument was dedicated to royalty. This theory is further strengthened by the fact that Sebastián Erard’s relationship with the royal house before the French Revolution was

well known, as well as by the intricacy of the detailed engraving of birds on the noble wood.

The harp was given to Marion Leigh as a birthday present in 1995, when she was living in Baltimore. It had been found in poor condition in a barn in Pennsylvania, U.S.A., and partially restored by a colleague of Marion’s husband. It still has a lovely sound, although only the top three octaves can be played because tightening the bass strings would put too much stress on the harp’s very old neck. Information Marion Leigh

Marion now spends the winter in Guadalmina, on the Costa del Sol. In summer, she and her husband can be found in North America, cruising aboard their 20-metre powerboat. To date, they have covered nearly forty thousand kilometres exploring the Great Lakes and the Eastern Seaboard of the United States and Canada. Marion’s first novel, The Politician’s Daughter, was released in Spain in June 2011. It is an adventure thriller featuring Marine Unit Sergeant Petra Minx of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Petra is called in to investigate when Emily Mortlake, the daughter of a high-flying Toronto politician, goes missing after taking a summer job aboard megayacht Titania in the Mediterranean. Despite the misgivings of her mentor, Tom Gilmore, Petra poses as a student and joins the crew of the yacht. She is quickly

drawn into the glamorous world of Titania’s owner, the ruthless and charismatic Don León. As she follows Emily’s trail from Monte Carlo to Mallorca and on to the Costa del Sol and Morocco, Petra struggles with conflicting emotions in her relentless quest to uncover

the truth before it is too late.

Marion’s second novel in the Petra Minx series, The Man in a Black Shirt, is set in the Bahamas, Las Vegas and the northern Great Lakes of North America.

Marion loves the climate and culture of southern Spain and is delighted to be associated with the Museo interactivo de la música de Málaga. Website: http://www.marionleigh.com Blogsite: http://marionleigh.wordpress .com/

Kennerleys awarded Film annual trophy The Trumps Bridge Group in Nerja held its annual tournament on Saturday 8th February at the AlAndalus Hotel in Maro near Nerja.

The event was well attended with a total of 14 tables (56 players) and the cup, entitled The David Leake Memorial Trophy, was awarded to the winning

pair Tara Kennerly.

&

Stan

The trophy was named after David Leake, a wellloved and prominent personality within the local bridge community. The bridge playing in the afternoon was followed by dinner in the evening when the results were announced and the trophy and cash prizes awarded

by Marion Talbot, the tournament organiser.

Regular duplicate bridge sessions take place on Monday and Thursday afternoons starting at 3.00pm at the Al-Andalus Hotel. All visitors welcome. For information see www.bridgewebs.com /trumpsnerja for current session times etc.

This coming week, tonight, Wednesday 12th and tomorrow, Thursday 13th February the original version of the film “The Book Thief” will be showing at La Tocha in Coin at 7.30 pm on both days.

The cost of the tickets is €4.00 per person (not €3.50) and there are no discounts available. The film lasts 2 hours and 10 minutes and is rated as a 12A in the UK and suitable for 7s and over in Spain.

There will only be two showings of this film on consecutive days. The box office will be open from about 3.30pm on each day.

The book on which this film is based – about a young girl, her relationship with the lady her mother cleans for and her love of books during the war – was fabulous so the film is not to be missed.

David King of the Marbella Rugby Club visited Cudeca Hospice on Friday afternoon, 24th January, to present a donation of €680 – part of the sum raised by children from the Rugby Club packing the bags of shoppers at the Iceland store in Puerto Banus during the run up to Christmas.

Marisa Ballestracci from the Cudeca Fundraising Department, showed David and his wife Sarah around the Hospice facilities, including the Day Care Unit and the very important In Patient Unit. The Marbella Rugby Club are a self-funded Club and this event has

not only gone towards helping the Club stay alive, but the 20% donation of their total collection will help Cudeca Hospice continue giving their special care, free of any cost, to their patients with non-curable advanced cancer and other non-curable illnesses,as well as giving support to their family.

Pets, Vets & Guests with David The Dogman

I would like to thank those who wrote welcoming me back and am delighted that you like the new column. If any of you cannot get our show on TRE send me an email and I will send you a copy every week. I also remind those of you who can get the show but maybe go shopping on Saturdays that you can hear a replay on Monday nights at 8pm.

Nazli says: A walk on the beach is one of the joys of having a dog in the Costa del Sol. But be careful if your dog tends to eat things he finds. After every storm fish hooks may wash up on the beach. If they still contain bait the dog will pick it up and swallow the hook. You will see the fish line hanging out of the mouth. DO NOT pull the line! Attach the line to the dog’s collar and seek veterinary help. Prevent this happening by putting a muzzle on your dog. Anna says: When choosing a dog school, choose wisely! Go and visit the school and talk to the trainer and other students before you decide. When training a dog it is very important that you believe in what you are doing and feel comfortable during the classes. Training is supposed to be fun for both you and your dog. Celia says: Is your cat going bald? It could be fleas. Some cats are so allergic to a single flea bite that they pull or nibble their fur in this area. Cats also do this if they have a painful area, if they are allergic to some forms of food, or if they are ill. Some cats even pull their fur out of stress. So take your cat to the vet and discuss the problem. On this week’s show we discussed stress – ‘Does your pet follow you around the home and even to the toilet?’ If yes if you’re honest (big smile) simply start closing doors behind you.

Our pets suffer when we leave them and especially when they go into kennels. My advice is to put your puppy into kennels for the day once a month for the first 6 months – this way your pet will suffer very little stress. If you can why not put a video on when you go out, that will tell all! I noticed that Boy Boy kept nibbling his rear end near his tail. I brush him every day using a Zoom Groom and kept searching the area and could see it was getting a little red, in fact he started to cry when nibbling it but I could see nothing. Nazli recommended a flea treatment and within 24 hours he stopped biting. Now I recommend a flea treatment even if your dog does not have fleas, as a preventative. More about fleas on my website.

In my schools I always used the Kumfi range of head collars, leads and collars. This range is now at Nazli’s clinic, all washable and adjustable and the famous Liver Treats which every dog loves tel: 952804165 Liver treats also in Fuengirola at Clinica Veterinaria Pet Vet Kamu, Calle Maestra Aspiazu, Edificio Azahar, Puebla Lucia 952 66 73 33. The design will be floor to ceiling one. It is a challenge, as I have over 40ft to fill!” His demonstration on Tuesday promises to be stunning and at the forefront of floral design. All Is Lost

DVD NEW RELEASE Director: J.C. Chandor Starring: Robert Redford

A man is lost at sea in the Indian Ocean. He is all alone, and his boat has taken on water as a result of an accident that ripped a hole in the side.

Nowhere near land, he must find a way to keep the boat afloat long enough to get it into a shipping lane. That will take all of the strength

and courage that he has.

Beyond the physical demands of keeping his ship together and surviving on very little to eat or drink, he must keep himself from going crazy as solitude encroaches on him and it becomes more and more likely that he will not survive this experience.

Ender's Game

DVD NEW RELEASE

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

Mr Peabody & SherMan Directed by Rob Minkoff Voices by: Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Stanley Tucci Another smart animated delight from Dreamworks, which offers plenty of action for the kids and lots of gags aimed at keeping the grown-ups amused, so mark this one down as perfect family fun.

Mr Peabody (Burrell) is a talking dog who is the cleverest being on the planet who happens to have a human adopted son Sherman (Charles). Mr Peabody has used his own invention, the WABAC time travel machine, to take Sherman on trips to learn about the past in a Wayne’s World/Back to The Future riff but things get out of hand when Sherman, making amends for fighting at school with classmate Penny, shows off the WABAC and before you can say space-time continuum the pair are off on a trip through time.

As the days wear on, his will to live begins to seriously dwindle.

Director: Gavin Hood Starring: Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford

In a dystopian future, the Earth is threatened by the Formics, a high-tech alien species that almost destroyed the human race decades earlier.

Terrified by their return, the government tries to decide what can be done about this grim problem. They end up settling upon an unlikely solution: putting their hopes in a boy named Ender, whom they intend to train to destroy the

alien invaders. Ender is a kind, empathetic child who is deeply devoted to his sister and frightened of his brother.

Neither of them is a chief concern once he is whisked away, however. Somehow, this mild-mannered child must be transformed into a killing machine.

How much will this

remarkable boy be forced to give up in order to save his people?

The Armstrong Lie

DVD NEW RELEASE Director: Alex Gibney Starring: Lance Armstrong

But of course it’s not that simple and the universe is threatened by their actions so Mr Peabody and the kids find themselves in Ancient Egypt, the Trojan War, the Renaissance and Revolutionary France, as

they try to put order back into the world.

It’s all great fun, with the usual impeccable Dreamworks standard of animation and a witty script, and has won plaudits from the critics.

This documentary compellingly reviews the life of American athlete Lance Armstrong, as told by intimate friends as well as journalists who questioned his integrity early on. Armstrong managed to cycle his way to fame by winning the Tour de France competition seven times after conquering cancer of the testicles. The absence of

Sometimes your heart just can’t take it, you are pushed until you reach your limit of what you feel you want to emotionally endure. You are possibly experiencing extreme diversity in your life when the pendulum seems to swing from one extreme to another, emotionally you can feel as though you are on a roller coaster ride. Massive changes usually occur under these conditions but rest assured that a gap is on its way where you will be able to settle and recuperate. Your head has had to turn and face the things that you do not wish to deal with but now that your ruler is moving direct again you are some more able to sing with the fairies. A sense of optimism and enthusiasm for the future inspires you to look with joy at the horizon. Take some time to heal the past, with someone who means a great deal to you, as there is no real moving forward until it happens. There is support around you right now not only from those who are physically there but from the intangible levels too. You may be able to either see something or someone clearly for the first time, in a way that you have overlooked, or an aspect of your health may come to your attention. At this point you could slip into moments of deep thought as your mind is processing all the information it has been collecting over the past few months. Let the tears flow Cancer, let it go. You are feeling sensitive on these days, even more so than usual and you feel like you could cry at a drop of a hat. What you really need is some peace and quiet; people may be tugging at you from all directions and demanding your attention. Take some well needed space, a bit of time out from it all, and this will restore some sense of internal balance and strengthen your resources. A wave of intense feeling is running through your veins and this will tell you all you need to know to proceed in a certain direction. However, if you are looking externally for feedback or validation from others it will be a waste of time. All you need to know is inside of you. You are about to enter a brand new life cycle that will prove to be very different from all the others, there will be hesitancy on your part as you know there will be no turning back once you begin down this road. This week ahead can be full of ups and downs, if there has been a repeating theme in your life, then this theme is likely to occur again but this time you have a chance to rewrite the outcome if you wish and take control of the cycle. Get some well needed rest when you can as this can be a strange but amusing time, having its tragic moments and its humorous ones. Once things start moving then they are likely to really take off so make the most of any quiet times you get.

Significant personal advancements start to happen and life seems to move progressively onwards. Everything seems to fall into place automatically, the barriers have lifted and it is time to really step things up and get it all moving. Others are likely to sense your energy and look to you for leadership and guidance as you appear to be able to weigh up the odds and make decisions rd September 23 - based on common sense and a logical approach.

Love is on your mind and is a serious business, perhaps there is someone in your life that you can trust for the long haul and somewhere inside you, you know this is true. Perhaps you are thinking of allowing yourself to commit and take this relationship to another level of trust. You hold the cards at the moment and the timing and deliverance is all down to you. You have passed through the valley of darkness lately and now you are emerging stronger and more determined than ever.

This can be an unusually nostalgic time and you will want to dig deep into your past and the memories of something significant loom larger than usual in your mind. Emotionally you could feel all over the place and you will want to indulge yourself in these feelings for now. Everything seems to have slowed down and progress can look as though it has groundto a halt, use this time to consider your options and choices very carefully.

Relationship dynamics are the theme of the week and you wish to clear the decks in order to eliminate all that does not serve you in your life. Everyone has their limits and you have nearly reached yours, in one key area, you know things have to change. This week prepare yourself for the changes that are about to begin as they are likely to be beneficial once they kick in. You will be pushing the re-set button and setting the criteria back on track. Commitments and career are the areas that are highlighted for you this week, there is likely to be some sort of recovery either on the practical level as in debts due to you come forth, or on a deeper level where you feel that you get a sense of identity back. There are opportunities to recover a more sustainable base that reflects a more natural expression of you. Demand what you are worth, be more self reliant and get those personal talents working for you. With any challenging experience, there is always a way through, this week you may need to ask yourself why you were put in a certain position in the first place. Events are likely to get interesting and you could hear people say things that you did not expect, powerful personal temptations are likely too; however, this is a perfect time for helping and assisting others. Pay close attention to the details, then you will not overlook anything important.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

This is a great dish to cook when you have guests for Sunday lunch – just stick it in the oven and forget about it. The 6 – 7 hours of slow cooking allows the meat to tenderise slowly and evenly.

Slow cooked shoulder of Lamb Ingredients:

• 2 kg lamb shoulder • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 medium onions, peeled and roughly chopped • 1 head garlic, halved horizontally • sprigs rosemary • sprigs thyme • 400 ml white wine

(Serves 4)

For the boulangere

• 2 onions, thinly sliced • knob of butter • 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 70C/gas 1/8. 2. Season the lamb liberally with salt and pepper. Heat the olive oil in a roasting tray and brown the shoulder on all sides. Add the onions, garlic and herbs. Lightly brown the vegetables. 3. Remove the meat and vegetables from the tray. Pour in the white wine and scrape the pan with a wooden spoon to dissolve any caramelised meat juices. Return the meat and vegetables to the pan, cover tightly with tin foil and put into the oven. 4. After 1 hour, remove the foil and add enough water to have about 1cm of liquid covering the bottom of the pan. Continue to cook uncovered for 4 hours, adding more liquid as necessary to baste the shoulder. 5. After 4

hours, remove the meat from the pan and strain any liquid through a sieve - you should have roughly 300-400ml. Discard the herbs and vegetables. 6. Increase the oven temperature to 80C/gas 1/2. 7. For the boulangere: soften the onions in a little butter. 8. Spread the onions onto the roasting tray and lay the sliced potatoes, overlapping on top. Sit the meat on top of the potatoes, pour the liquid over the lamb and add more water till the potatoes are just covered. 9. Put the pan back into the oven for another 2 hours, basting the meat and potatoes occasionally. You will have the most tender piece of meat imaginable, with the tastiest potato garnish.

I'm assuming by now you all know your numbers. Or are some of you still craning your necks to read the till at the check-out? With numbers, like everything else, it is just a matter of practise, practise, practise. Try saying prices to yourself as you go about your shopping.

So with the cardinal (normal) numbers under our belts it is now time to tackle the ordinals (the ones that tell you the order/sequence of things.) They come in masculine and feminine forms Primero/a - First, Segundo/a - Second, Tercero/a - Third, Cuarto/a - Fourth, Quinto/a - Fifth, Sexto/a - Sixth, Septimo/a - Seventh, Octavo/a - Eighth, Noveno/a - Ninth, Decimo/a - Tenth.

It is worth remembering that speaking about dates, people use the normal, cardinal numbers. So, the seventh of February is el siete de febrero, 17th March - el diecisiete de marzo, 9th May - el nueve de mayo, 4th December - el cuatro de diciembre and so on. However, there are many times that it is useful to know the ordinals at least up to 10. Mi oficina está en la quinta planta - My office is on the fifth floor El coche está en el sexto nivel del parking - My car is on the sixth level of the car park Terminamos segundo en la carrera - We finished second in the race. Octubre es el decimo mes del año - October is the tenth month of the year. Toma la tercera calle a la derecha - Take the third street on the right. Y después la primera a la izquierda - And then the first on the left. Voy de vacaciones la segunda semana de febrero - I'm going on holiday in the second week of February. Ojalá - If only Ya está - That's it Hasta la próxima - Until next time. Valerie

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Sue,

I have an acne prone skin. Do I need to use a toner? Victoria, Mijas Dear Victoria,

An acidic toner, such as those containing extracts of orange and lemon will be beneficial for your skin. These take away any residue left from cleansing and assist in maintaining the pH balance of the skin, which in turn reduces the risk of infection. Many also

have anti fungus properties which is extremely helpful if you have acne. Dear Calvin,

I have recently been told I have alopecia will my hair loss ever grow back? Cathy, Fuengirola Dear Cathy,

There is every chance that your hair will grow back with or without treatment, but it also it may fall out again. No one can predict when it might

regrow or fall out, as the condition varies from person to person. Some people lose just a few patches of hair, the hair regrows and the condition never comes back, whereas others continue to lose and regrow hair for many years.

These are just my thoughts on the subject, but for more accurate information I would listen to your GP. Dear Sue,

am going back to England for a big party and want to look brown. Have you any ideas on how to achieve this? Emma, Fuengirola Dear Emma,

The easy answer to this is to fake it! Either with a spray tan or self tanning cream. Both are easy, quick and safe. Make sure you exfoliate well before either so you get more even, long lasting results. Self tanning can also help to disguise stretch marks and the

dimpling cellulite.

Dear Calvin,

I am desperately trying to grow my hair for my upcoming wedding but I have bad split ends and I don't want to cut my hair, any solutions? Debbie, Benalmadena Dear Debbie,

Got to be blunt Debbie ,you have to cut them off, if you don't the split ends will continue to get worse until

you have to have a lot cut off.

Having your ends cut on a regular basis will actually stop the splitting and the hair will grow more quickly. Believe me it does work!

Testosterone’s benefits and risks Nearly a decade ago, researchers in Boston decided to find out if older men who were not in good shape could benefit from daily doses of testosterone. They recruited several hundred volunteers and gave them the hormone or a placebo. Those taking testosterone got stronger, compared with those

taking the placebo, but they also had nearly five times the number of cardiovascular problems, including heart attacks and strokes, and safety monitors ended the trial early.

Since then studies of testosterone treatment have produced mixed results. A 2012 study of veterans aged 40 and over

Vitamin C 'keeps cancer at bay'

They said that given by injection, it could potentially be a safe, effective and low-cost treatment for ovarian and other cancers, and called for large-scale government clinical trials. The large pharmaceutical companies are unlikely to run trials, as vitamins cannot be patented. Vitamin C has long been used as an alternative therapy for cancer.

In the 1970s, chemist Linus Pauling reported that vitamin C given intravenously was effective in treating cancer. However, clinical trials of vitamin C given by mouth failed to

However, the researchers said that when given by injection vitamin C is absorbed into the body, and can kill cancer cells without harming normal ones. After injecting vitamin C into human ovarian cancer cells in the lab and into mice, they found ovarian cancer cells were sensitive to vitamin C treatment, but normal cells were unharmed. The treatment worked in tandem with standard chemotherapy drugs to slow tumour growth in mouse studies. Meanwhile, a small group of patients reported fewer side-effects when given vitamin C alongside chemotherapy.

The Good Ship Lollipop will sail no more

On Monday, child star Shirley Temple died aged 85 according to her publicist Cheryl Kagan

… the dimpled, curly-headed child was known for her cutsie image but she was a political force in later years.

Shirley Temple Black, died on Monday night at about 11 p.m. at her home near San Francisco. She was surrounded by family members and caregivers. She was America’s top box office star throughout the Depression years from 1935 to 1938 beating such big names as Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, Robert Taylor, Gary Cooper and Joan Crawford. She kept movie enthusiasts singing “On The Good Ship Lollipop” that featured in the 1934 film “Bright Eyes” when she sang it at just six years old. The Good Ship Lollipop was in fact an aeroplane, not a boat, and the aviators in the plane during the "On the Good Ship Lollipop"

song sequence were all volunteers from the football team at the nearby University of Southern California. Shirley Temple retired from films at age 21 when audiences lost interest in her after she lost her child status. She raised her family and later held several diplomatic posts in Republican administrations including that of ambassador to Czechoslovakia during the collapse of communism in 1989. She won a special Academy Award in early 1935 for her "outstanding contribution to screen entertainment" in the previous year. She was honoured in the 1998

Two fashion designers hit by delays Designer and girlfriend of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, L’Wren Scott has pulled out of the biannual London Fashion Week as delays in production mean that key pieces will not be ready in time for the show that was scheduled for this coming Sunday.

The 6’4” former model is known for designing clothes for her label – founded in 2006 – that women can actually wear and is a firm favourite with Penelope Cruz, Sara Jessica Parker and Amy Adams. Instead, Scott will unveil her autumn/winter 2014 collection via social media and present it to press at her Paris showroom during Paris Fashion Week at the beginning of March. She most recently collaborated with Banana

Republic to create an affordable collection of clothes, shoes and accessories.

Also dogged by delays are is Victoria Beckham’s press material for her Victoria Beckham autumn/winter launch due this week. However, the clothes still went on sale from her New York fashion house from Monday this week and are reportedly proving very popular.

The sister line to her main clothing line is responsible for taking the former Spice Girl's fashion business into the black after 2012's .£15 million turnover left a tidy profit of just below £1.5 million. Both designers are known for their smart, wearable and affordable range of clothes for the modern woman.

Academy Awards and in 2006 she was awarded the lifetime achievement award by the Screen Actors Guild. She said in her acceptance speech: "I have one piece of advice for those of you who want to receive the lifetime achievement award. Start early!" She was "just absolutely marvelous, greatest in the world," director Allan Dwan told filmmakerauthor Peter Bogdanovich in his book "Who the Devil Made It: Conversations With Legendary Film Directors." ''With Shirley, you'd just tell her once and she'd remember the rest of her life," said Dwan, who directed "Heidi" and "Rebecca of Sunnybrook

Will Danny Zuko be in the next 007 movie?

John Travolta, best known for his starring rôles such as Danny Zuko in Grease, the hip-gyrating Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever, Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, and for his part as a really rather naughty angel in Michael, turns the ripe old age of 60 later this month – next Tuesday in fact, although he’d really rather forget it, he says. Having been away from the big screen for a while, he now has a series of tough-guy roles lined up, first in heist movie The Forger, then as John Gotti Snr in a 2015 biopic about the mobster. However, he says he won’t really “close the chapter on playing villains”, until he gets cast as a baddy in a James Bond film. “I would love that. They’re going a different way with their villain in this next film but I’ve spoken to Barbara Broccoli about it and she loves the idea, so that would be great.”

She often played an orphan, as in "Curly Top," where she introduced the hit "Animal Crackers in My Soup," and "Stowaway," in which she was befriended by Robert Young, later of "Father Knows Best" fame. At one point President Franklin D. Roosevelt said that "as long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right." "We salute her for a life of remarkable achievements as an actor, as a diplomat, and most importantly as

Stephen Fry hosts the annual celebration of cinema, live from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. This has been a year that has seen moviegoers get stranded in space with Sandra Bullock in Gravity, become engrossed by the excitement of Formula 1 in Rush and tinkle the ivories with Michael Douglas in Behind the Candelabra - among many other big-screen treats. Now the academy pays tribute to the very best, with American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Philomena and 12 Years a Slave competing for best film.

With the loss of satellite UK terrestrial channels in Spain, many people will be looking at the various possibilities of getting them back.

The most popular method will be IPTV which will enable the various television channels to be downloaded via the Internet. If one has a “smart” television, then the Internet can be either directly connected by cable to the television or wirelessly via WIFI.

However, if a household does not have a smart TV but has a TV that has an HDMI connection, then it is possible to buy a set-top box that will connect to the Internet and output to the TV via the HDMI connection. This will probably be the most common method and there will be many companies trying to sell these set-top boxes.

Whatever method is chosen it will now cost money to

By email

obtain the UKTV channels. It will be necessary to buy a set-top box and pay a “content provider” a monthly or yearly subscription to provide the UKTV channels. This will be in addition to paying for an Internet that is of sufficient speed to ensure a good quality of service and picture. However, there is a much cheaper way of obtaining the UKTV channels and will not necessitate using a content provider and that is by use of a very small computer called a Raspberry PI which was originally developed for schools to allow students to learn about computers and computer programming. Since its inception, the Raspberry PI has proved so popular that it is now used for a whole multitude of uses and one only has to “Google” Raspberry PI or look on YouTube to discover more about this excellent computer, which is fully capable of high quality video. It is about the size of a credit

card, and costs around £35 from Amazon or Ebay. Its “operating system” is called XBMC and allows the user to not only watch literally hundreds of movies, including new releases, for free, (which other set-top boxes will not) but also enables all UKTV channels and radio stations to be downloaded for free.

It connects to the Internet, either by cable or wirelessly and its output is via an HDMI connecter to the home television. (Like all Internet services the quality is dependent upon the speed of the Internet and the service provided by the ISP, Telefonica, Telitec, Wifinetspain, Mowitel etc.).

At the moment I am watching BBC news and last night I watched a new release film called The Book Thief.

was such a shame to see people at the bar behaving like morons. At times we could hardly hear the singer over them shouting their conversations to each other and, why they would think the rest of us would want to hear what they had to say is utterly beyond me. Perhaps the people making all the noise will find over the coming weeks and months a way to appreciate what these artistes do and learn a few manners when it comes to ruining other people’s nights out. The artiste in question carried on through it all like the true trouper he is but at the end of the evening, all those that had travelled to see his show were very disappointed. So please, if there’s a show on and people are obviously wanting to enjoy it, shut up and have some manners in future.

Orion, e Hunter

O

Of all the constellations in the night sky the most easily recognised must be Orion, The Hunter.

rion dominates the winter sky with his ‘bow tie’ or ‘butterfly’ shape of stars that are some of the brightest stars in the sky. At this time of year Orion can be seen rising in the east at dusk and during the night he stands upright passing right across the southern part of the sky. He is one of the more interesting constellations and each star has its own story to tell. tarting with the bright red coloured star in the upper left-hand corner – this is Betelgeuse a supersized red giant. Betelgeuse is so huge that if it were placed where our Sun is then its outer edge would reach almost to the planet Saturn. Betelgeuse is a ‘live fast die young’ type of star. It is only about 10 million years old compared to the Sun’s six billion years, but its massive size has caused it to use up much of its fuel and it is expected to explode as a supernova any time between now and one million years hence. It may have already exploded and as it is 640 light years away we are simply waiting for the image to get here. ove to the top right-hand star Bellatrix; a blue/white coloured star about 250 light years away and over eight times bigger than the sun. Continue clockwise to the bottom right hand star, this is Rigel a super bright star almost 900 light years away. Rigel is possibly 100 thousand times more luminous than the Sun and about 75 times the radius. It is the sixth brightest star in the night sky. Its dazzling blue/white colour tells astronomers that it is a very hot star with a surface temperature of more than 12,0000 C. he faint star in the bottom left hand corner is called Saith that comes from an Arabic name meaning sword of the giant. Saith is about 650 light years away, which is almost the same distance as Betelgeuse. From Saith Betelgeuse must be an amazing sight at only 10 light years away from it. ow look at the three stars in a perfect straight line crossing the centre of Orion. From left to right they are called Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. Although these three stars appear to be equal in brightness and distance they are massively different in size, brightness and distance from us, it is merely a line of sight effect that causes them to appear as Orion’s belt. f you look very carefully below Orion’s belt where his sword would be hanging you will notice that the stars here seem a little fuzzy round the

edges. This is the famous M42 Orion Nebula, a huge gas cloud where new stars are being formed. Through binoculars the nebula is quite clear but with a telescope it is a splendid sight with hundreds of stars shining through the cloud. The Orion nebula is 1500 light years away and about 24 light years across. It is the closest star forming region to us and probably one of the most studied and photographed deep sky objects by amateur and professional astronomers alike. ow that you can recognise Orion you can use his figure to guide you to other stars and constellations. Follow the three stars in his belt downward to the left and you will come across the brightest star in the night sky, Sirius in the constellation of Canis Major, the great dog of Orion. Sirius is one of the closest stars to us at only 8.6 light years away it also happens to be twice the size of the Sun and 25 times brighter. Sirius was a very important star to the ancient Egyptians as its first appearance before sunrise heralded the annual flooding of the Nile. The season following the star's appearance came to be known as the Dog Days of summer. ollow the stars of Orion’s belt upward this time to find Aldebran the red eye of Taurus the Bull bearing down on Orion. Use your binoculars to scan the area around Aldebran to see the Hyades cluster of hundreds of stars an amazing sight!

Ferrari snatch a thrilling Bathurst 12 Hour The 2014 Bathurst 12 Hours took place in Australia last weekend at the Mount Panorama Circuit. Ferrari took the win with a thrilling finish in what was a side-by-side race to the finish line against a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 belonging to HTP Motorsports.

The team of Craig Lowndes, Peter Edwards, John Bowe and Mika Salo in the Ferrari 458 GT3 were the victors. The outcome though was not resolved coming to the last corner, but the second-

placed HTP MercedesBenz SLS of Maximilian Buhk, Thomas Jaeger and Harold Primat missed out by just 0.4 of a second.

Three seconds covered the first four places. Third was another Mercedes, the Erebus car of Will Davison, Jack Le Brocq and Greg Crick, which just held out the surprise packet McLaren MP4-12C of pet-food magnate Tony Quinn, his son Klark, Scot Andrew Kirkaldy and the new Mount Panorama lap record-holder, Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen with a time

of 2.03.85 – a touch faster than the pole time.

Lowndes has five Bathurst 1000 trophies already on top of the 2014 Bathurst 12-Hour trophy he won on Sunday. The second placed HTP Motorsports team made it a great spectacle with an impressive performance, especially from their young driver Buhk. Third in this Class A was also another Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT of Erebus Motorsports. They fought back several laps to the top after suffering damage due to a contact. The damage resulted in the car being faster on the straights and slower at the tops which was considered an advantage.

The race continued from dawn to dusk with crashes and incidents in abundance, and an unwanted appearance by a suicidal kangaroo. The

Aston Martin recall will cost £1.5 million Aston Martin estimates that its expanded recall of accelerator pedals in 17,590 sports cars will result in a material added cost of 1.5 million pounds. The first recall for the problem was announced last May and was expanded in October and expanded again last Wednesday to include most of the sports cars built by Aston Martin since late 2007.

Aston Martin said in a statement last week that it determined the cost of the recall in late November 2013. The estimate does not include the potential cost of moving production of the pedal. Their spokeswoman Sarah Calam said the company plans to shift production of the pedal arms from China to the UK "as soon as possible" in 2014.

The cost of the recall is of great interest because Aston Martin has struggled to fund the development of a range of new vehicles while rivals like Bentley, owned by Volkswagen Group, and

Rolls-Royce, owned by BMW Group, have the ability to draw on the resources of their parent firms. Of the Aston Martin cars affected in the recall, 7,271 are in Europe and 5,001 in the United States, Calam said. The company sells cars in 41 countries.

The cars are being recalled from model years 2008 through 2014, according to documents from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Aston Martin found that Shenzhen Kexiang Mould Tool Co. Ltd., a Chinese subcontractor that molds the affected accelerator pedal arms, was using counterfeit plastic material supplied by Synthetic Plastic Raw Material Co. Ltd. of Dongguan, according to documents filed with the NHTSA.

Calam said there had been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue, adding that 22 failed parts had been reported.

kangaroo was hit after just 15 minutes of the 6.15am start time, by the Erebus Mercedes driven by Brocq, and then the following Lamborghini Gallardo, which was damaged beyond repair and out of the contest.

The young German Buhk made a couple of adventurous lunges at Lowndes in the final minutes, but the wily Australian, winner of five Bathurst 1000s, didn't falter.

''I was running the inside lines, and making the Merc take the long way around,'' said Lowndes of the tense last few minutes. It was his fourth 12 Hour start, and first win. There was a scary moment for the winning team mid-race when van Gisbergen fired the Casting his eye over the Sepang MotoGP timesheets, new Ducati signing Cal Crutchlow was clear that world champion Marc Marquez holds a significant advantage over the other riders.

Honda star Marquez left the test with a best lap time just 0.194s ahead of Yamaha's Valentino Rossi, with the top four riders all breaking the two-minute barrier. However it was

McLaren under the Salodriven Ferrari entering the sweeper at the McPhillamy Park bend. The two slapped panels at about 200km/h. During the third hour of the race, the Clearwater Ferrari of Hiroshi Hamaguchi clipped a wall, broke its radiator, and then spun on its own fluid at the superfast McPhillamy Park bend.

Chiyo (and earlier put among the top three by V8 Supercars driver Rick Kelly) hit the same patch of fluid and careered heavily into the Ferrari. It was turned into an unrecognisable pile of scrap metal. The team though made it clear that they will be back next year. The feeling was, this was one of the most exciting Bathurst's for many years, and next year’s dates have already been fixed 6-8th Feb 2015. One for the diary.

In-House Competitions take place at Mijas Bowls Club The In-House competitions have now been completed at Mijas and it is thought that two “firsts” have been recorded as, in the Drawn Pairs, a husband and wife were drawn out to play together and, in the Handicap Singles, a husband and wife played against each other in the final. The Drawn Triples was played to a finish earlier as one of the entrants, who was an eventual winner, had to return home for medical reasons. The winners were Peter Allard, Geoff Collins and Charles McIntyre who beat Hal Briscoe, Jim Taylor and June Briscoe in the final. The Drawn Pairs saw the aforementioned husband and wife pairing, Ron and Pam Cole, beat Peter Allard

and Geoff Collins in a very good final match. In the Ladies' Singles Geraldine Robinson beat Barbara Land to become the Champion who will go on to play in the Champion of Champions when she will be joined by Tony Land, the Mijas Men's Champion. After her Singles match Barbara said that as she had been playing at Indalo Bowls Club, on a much heavier green, only two days before, it took her a few ends to become accustomed to the much faster carpet at Mijas. The Men's Singles final could not be played as John Fenton unfortunately had to pull out through illness. It is worth mentioning here that Barbara had been to Indalo playing in the Malaga squad versus the Spanish National squad;

she won three out of her four matches which were two Pairs and two Trips. Last, but not least, the Handicap Singles in which Tony and Val Thornton met each other in the final. The winner was Tony, who, according to Val, played an excellent game and she just could not catch him. However, after the match, they were still talking to each other!

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips Continued from last week

Variance

If there’s one reason I hear more than any other for not playing 6-max holdem, it’s that the variance is too high. Some people simply don’t want to endure the downswings associated with a higher variance game of poker.

While it is true that your standard deviation per 100 hands will be higher in 6max than full ring, this should not be a factor in whether you play the game or not. We are supposed to be playing for the long term! If you are adequately bankrolled, then you will do better playing in the game which earns you the most money per hour, regardless of the variance. Remember, variance doesn’t alter your mean winrate, just your spread of results around that winrate. This means above it too! Most players forget this. When you have a monster session and finish up 6 – 8 buyins, do you put it all down to playing well? Or are you aware enough to be able to say “In that session I ran way above my average winrate due to variance.”

Do not limp preflop

This is the only hard and fast rule I am going to give you in this article. While it’s possible to employ a profitable strategy involving preflop limping, it’s extremely difficult to balance and relies on expert

post flop play. For the vast majority of players, it’s simply better to raise any pot you want to enter first. Three or four times the big blind will do it. If you limp, not only will you be isolated out of position a lot, it will be more difficult to build big pots with your monsters. It also makes hand reading a nightmare, especially if you let the blinds in for free.

C – Betting

C-betting is the bread and butter of 6-max holdem. If you raised preflop and get one or two callers, you will be betting most flops whether you hit or miss. These bets should be somewhere between half and full pot size. How to choose what size in this range depends on a number of things: Flop texture Number of opponents Opponents’ tendencies Balance Own hand strength

C-betting is a topic that requires an article in itself to cover properly, so I won’t attempt to reproduce that here. Just be aware that part of the reason you are raising so much preflop is to take the pot down often with a c-bet on the flop.

Position

Most players know that position is to your advantage in NL Holdem, but they simply don’t use it as relentlessly as they should. When you have position, especially on the

button, you should be raising a lot of pots. On a tight/weak table, it’s difficult to go too far with this. Raise any limped or unopened pot on the button with all but the trashiest of hands.

Position can be used to exploit different opponent types in various ways. If you have a weak TAG on your left who calls from the blinds too much but gives up too easily post flop, you can raise all sorts of hands from the button and cutoff. You can then apply pressure and 2 or 3 barrel him depending on the situation, making him lay down the vast majority of his range. If you are playing with a loose passive fish on your right, you can also isolate with a wide range. Unless he picks up a big hand, he’ll mostly be check/calling to the river, allowing you to choose where to value bet, and where to check behind. These are the sorts of situation where position gives you a huge advantage, so make sure most of your hands are played in position.

Away-day blues for Malaga Rayo Vallecano 4 - 1 Malaga After the great result last weekend over Sevilla, Malaga travelled to Madrid in search of another vital 3 points.

Malaga had a much changed team with Angeleri, Samu, Perez and Morales all in the starting line-up. The game started with Rayo dominating play with Malaga showing little up front, and it was no surprise to see Malaga fall one behind after 25 minutes. A great run by Falque who beat two Malaga defenders with consumate ease ended in him slotting home from inside the box. Three minutes later it went from bad to worse as a hopeful shot from Arbilla outside the box took a wicked deflection to leave Caballero rooted to the spot.

The first half ended

with Malaga three down and a man down, as Sanchez was harshly penalised for pulling Larrivey down in the box. A second yellow for the Malaga defender and Larrivey stepped up and scored from the resulting spot kick, (pictured with team mate Falque right).

Malaga made changes at half time, Casado on for his debut with Darder and that gave a little improvement. Arambat had a chance for Malaga but it was well saved by Ruben. On 65 minutes it was four for Rayo as bad defending led to Falque skipping through to slot home. Iakovenko coming on for his debut at the expense

of Juanmi gave Malaga a consolation goal with 15 minutes to go firing home from outside the box. But it was too little too late as Malaga were thoroughly hammered by the team who sit 2nd bottom in La Liga. This result leaves Malaga anxiously looking over their shoulder at the relegation places.

Next game is on Monday at 10pm against Real Sociedad, another must win game. Report by Scott Forbes

1D’s Twitter spat with Mike Phillips

Wales scrum-half Mike Phillips has challenged One Direction's Niall Horan to train with the Welsh squad after the singer criticised him on Twitter. Phillips was in a scuffle during Saturday's match against Ireland, which Wales lost 26-3, prompting the Irish singer to tweet that the player looked an "arrogant idiot". The rugby star replied: "Come down to training in the week big boy. And bring the rest of the Beatles with you." Horan declined the offer.

Snowboarding commentary Tiger Woods's niece draws complaints but others wins first title thought it exciting

More than 300 people complained to the BBC over the quality of commentary during the snowboarding slopestyle final at the Winter Olympics. It was thanks to some kind locals who had posted on Facebook that you could get BBC channel RB2 showing the Olympics that I was even watching it. And I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Slopestyle is a new and relatively young sport even though Great Britain's first Olympic medal on the snow was won by 33 year old Jenny Jones (pictured) at the event in Sochi on Sunday, where she took the bronze.

Friend and fellow British snowboarder Aimee Fuller had joined Ed Leigh and Tim Warwood in the commentary box. Fuller had taken part in the

early stages of the event but failed to make the final, after which she was invited into the presentation booth. Viewers complained that they cheered when Jones's competitors fell, and that the commentary was of a low standard. Fuller was

heard cheering when the final competitor, Austria's Anna Gasser, fell, meaning that Jones would clinch the bronze medal. (Now I have to admit so did I! ) Fuller then said: "Are we supposed to do that? Probably not." All three commentators began crying when it became clear that Jones had won a medal. There were many parts of the commentary that the wife and I didn't understand, but the enthusiasm was infectious and the pair of us were whooping along with them. By Mike Kerrigan

Cheyenne Woods, niece of 14-time major winner Tiger Woods, claimed the first major title of her career by winning the Australian Ladies Masters. The 23year-old American shot a final-round four-under-par 69 at Royal Pines on Sunday to finish on 16 under overall and win by two shots. Local amateur Minjee Lee finished second after also carding a 69. "This is a huge accomplishment for me," said Woods, who finished

World Matchplay The Volvo World Matchplay Championship will return to England in 2014 for its 50th anniversary – but not at its traditional home of Wentworth. London Golf Club in Kent will host the £1.8m tournament from 15th-19th October. "It is fantastic that the championship will be played in England for this special anniversary," said the defending champion Graeme McDowell. The event, which has been held in Spain and Bulgaria, returns to England for the first time since 2007. A 16-man field, split into four groups of four, will battle it out for a first prize of £540,000.

West Ham agree Upton Park sale West Ham have agreed to sell Upton Park to London developer the Galliard Group once they have completed their move to the Olympic Stadium in 2016. The Hammers said they chose the group for its "close links to the community". Vice-chairman Karren Brady said the deal demonstrated the club had kept its promise to regenerate two areas of east London through its stadium move. The developer plans to build new homes on the site as well as retail and leisure facilities by 2018.
