Corruption across European Union 'breathtaking'

The extent of corruption in Europe is "breathtaking" and it costs the EU economy at least €120bn annually, according to the European Commission's first continent-wide study on the issue. Presenting the report on Tuesday, EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem said the true cost of corruption was "probably much higher" than €120bn.

The cost to the EU economy is equivalent to the bloc's annual budget.

National governments, rather than EU institutions, are chiefly responsible for fighting corruption in the EU, but

Ms Malmstroem said national governments and the European Parliament had asked the Commission to carry out the EU-wide study.

The Commission drafts EU laws and enforces compliance with EU treaties. For the report the Commission studied corruption in all 28 member states. Before presenting the report, Ms Malmstroem told Sweden's Goeteborgs-

Posten daily that the extent of the problem in Europe was "breathtaking", adding that Sweden was among the countries with the least problems.

Three-quarters of Europeans surveyed for the Commission study said corruption was widespread, and more than half said the level had increased. Four out of 10 of the businesses surveyed described

corruption as an obstacle to doing business in Europe.

Bribery widespread

In the UK only five people out of 1,115 – less than one per cent – said they had been expected to pay a bribe. It was "the best result in all Europe", the report said. But 64 per cent of British respondents said they believed corruption to be

widespread in the UK, while the EU average was 74 per cent on that question. In some countries there was a relatively high number reporting personal experience of bribery. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

In and out

There’s not been an awful lot going on in the Wickham’s World household this week which means I’ve mostly been vegging out in front of the telly after work. I managed, at last, to see the first ever episode of Luther. I missed it the first time round of this excellent (if a tad violent) series and now the whole thing makes more sense. Call the Midwife followed by the new Three Musketeers series are on a Sunday so that’s another couple to put one’s jimjams on and watch in comfort. The latest series of Castle and NCIS I also like to watch but I also like Michael Portillo’s Railway journeys with his Bradford Guide in hand too, plus the History channel is quite often on. When I switch on to start with I find I look at it and think there’s nothing to watch on the box but, actually, there’s quite a lot of decent stuff still on. What I don’t get though is why they are putting what used to be termed “magazine” programmes – that used to be on in the afternoons to do the ironing by – at 9 o’clock in the evening. Budget cuts I suppose! Up here in Coin on Friday we have Mad Terry coming up from the coast with his show at The Olive Tree starting at 9pm. I have seen Terry perform on a number of occasions and, quite apart from being a really nice man, he’s hilarious and well worth seeing. He also has a great voice – he’s known as The Man Of Many Voices – and injects some of his humour into the songs he’s singing so, if you think you know the words to them, listen out, you’ll be amazed. The Olive Tree is on Avenida Maria Zambrano, that’s the raised service road from the fruit shops at Cantarranas to the tyre shop at the roundabout that goes to Alhaurin el Grande. Well worth a night out! One evening we did go out was last Friday and, as I had Jackie looking after Hannie and Jackson, we decided to stay down on the coast for dinner so we popped along to La Parra and had fab fish and chips.

Corruption across EU 'breathtaking' In Croatia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Romania and Greece, between 6 per cent and 29 per cent of respondents said they had been asked for a bribe, or had been expected to pay one, in the past 12 months. There were also high levels of bribery in Poland (15 per cent), Slovakia (14 per cent) and Hungary (13 per cent), where the most prevalent instances were in healthcare. Ms Malmstroem said corruption was eroding trust in democracy and draining resources from the legal economy. "The political commitment to really root out corruption seems to be missing," she said.

Corruption in Spain

Ninety-five per cent of Spaniards believe corruption is generalised. Only respondents in Greece (99 per cent) and Italy (97 per cent) outdid Spain.

In two areas of the survey Spain topped the charts. Asked if the level of corruption had risen in the past three years, 77 per cent said yes, more than in the other 27 member states. Two out of every three respondents said that corruption affected their daily lives, more than in any other nation.

The survey was conducted in February and March 2013, when a series of corruption scandals involving the government, labour unions, political parties and the monarchy dominated the headlines in Spain.

Rajoy slams opposition leader The Partido Popular (PP) officially kicked off the beginning of the second half of its current term in government on Sunday with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy promising to carry out his longawaited ambitious tax reform and other economic measures to help Spain get back on its feet. But it was his criticism of

opposition leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba that made the headlines. Towards the end of his speech, Rajoy made an unusually aggressive attack on Rubalcaba as an individual rather than on the Socialist Party as a whole, as he usually does. “He was deputy prime minister of a government that ruined Spain.

It doesn’t bother me that he is criticising me, but what bothers me is that he is discouraging people when he was partly responsible for our current agony – either you shut up or recognise the people’s merits,” Rajoy said. In a quick response, Rubalcaba on his Facebook page demanded that Rajoy must explain all the

corruption cases against the PP that are being investigated.

“Speak, explain, Mr Rajoy, and stop telling the rest of us to shut up,” Rubalcaba posted. Next day, in an interview on RTVE1's "Desayunos" (Breakfast) programme, Rubalcaba said the attack didn't bother him, because

"Rajoy always turns on me when he has internal troubles in his party." Both Rajoy's promises and his attack on Rubalcaba were generally viewed as the start of the PP's campaign for the European Parliamentary elections on May 25th, with the polls showing the PP neck-and-neck with the Socialists.

King puts Queen and Princess Zf!Pmf!Cvudifsz on the royal payroll For the first time, King Juan Carlos has provided a fixed salary for both his wife, Queen Sofía, and his daughter-in-law, Princess Letizia, the Royal Household confirmed on Monday. Queen Sofía will receive €131,739 a year – €63,234 in personal salary and the rest for expenses incurred on official business.

Letizia, the Princess of Asturias and wife to the heir, Prince Felipe, will receive €102,464 – €49,182 for personal expenses and €53,282 for official expenses. Previously, the two women only received expenses, the exact

breakdown of which was never disclosed. The king’s salary stands at €292,752, and Prince Felipe will earn the same as last year, exactly half of what the king receives – €146,376. All four will pay tax, ranging from 30 per cent upwards. The Royal Household also released the accounts relating to the king's last three operations – a total of €165,189, which was covered by the annual state budget for the royal family.

Last March the king underwent surgery for a double slipped disc, and in

September and November two interventions to replace a prosthetic hip were performed.

All three operations were performed at private clinics. The Royal Household decided last year to publish its accounts after public uproar over the king’s 2012 elephant hunting trip to Botswana – where he broke his hip – and the alleged skimming of public money by his son-in-law Iñaki Urdangarin.

In all, the Royal Household will receive €7.7 million this year from the state budget, two per

Unemployment up again In what is traditionally a bad month for the labour market, unemployment rose by 113,097, or 2.4 per cent, from December to 4.814 million. The Labour Ministry said on Tuesday that on a month-on-month basis, this January was the “least negative” since 2007.

Between 2008 and 2013, the number of people officially registered as unemployed has risen every year by over 130,000 in January, with the exception of 2010 when

the increase was 125,000. The biggest recent increase in jobless claims in the first month of the year was in 2009, when the ranks of the unemployed grew by 199,000.

More protests against Storms ravage the abortion law reform northern coast Thousands of people protested in Madrid on Saturday against the government's draft law that would restrict the right to abortion. Supported by several Spanish opposition parties, protesters carrying banners saying "Allow mothers to decide" and "Deciding makes us free" called on Justice Minister Alberto RuizGallardon, who drafted the law, to resign.

Under current legislation brought in by Spain's previous Socialist government in 2010, and opposed by the Catholic Church and conservative groups, any woman can have an abortion within the first 14 weeks of becoming pregnant. The new law says early termination is no longer a right, and would only be allowed in cases of rape or when two doctors judge the mother's health to be at serious risk. The opposition Socialist Party has warned that the measure would send women into dangerous backstreet clinics for

abortions. The law still needs approval of parliament but is expected to pass because the Partido Popular has a large majority.

In a separate protest on Sunday, five activists from the feminist group Femen – stripped to the waist and yelling “abortion is sacred" – confronted Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela on his way to hold Mass. They also hurled several pairs of reddyed panties at the conservative archbishop of Madrid as he got out of his

car and tried to make his way into a church in the city centre around 8pm. Escorted by parish priests, Rouco managed to

enter the church on Palma street, while the activists, who had “Femen” written across their bare torsos, shouted anti-abortion reform slogans. After the main door of the church was closed, the demonstrators continued to protest along the streets surrounding the church, accompanied by applause from several passers-by.

Court rules in favour of Spanish The Catalan regional High Court has ruled that the minimum number of hours that Spanish must be used as the working language in schools in the region is 25 per cent if parents request it.

The case arose from a suit by five sets of parents to have their children taught in Spanish rather than Catalan in subjects

other than Spanish language classes, after the Catalan regional government had refused to do so. This is the first time a court has set a specific minimum quota for the number of hours of classes that students must be taught in Spanish.

The court sentence said: "Without prejudice against maintaining Catalan as

the centre of gravity of the system, Spanish should be present in a reasonable proportion that is not cursory and a mere artifice to comply with its obligatory use as a working language."

The court ordered the regional education department "to adopt all necessary measures" to comply with its ruling. The

department has a month to implement the sentence in the five schools attended by the children of the parents who lodged the suit.

The regional government has said that up to June 30th, 2013, only 23 families in the region had requested classes in Spanish for their children.

Car sales up for fifth month The government's announcement in early January that it would continue the PIVE subsidy scheme helped the car sector register a rise in new registrations for the fifth consecutive month. Under the PIVE scheme, people who turn in an older vehicle and buy a new, environmentally friendly vehicle receive a subsidy of €2,000. As a result, January saw

43,436 new car registrations, 7.6 per cent up on the same month a year ago, according to figures released on Monday by the industry associations Anfac, Faconauto and Ganvam.

The fifth period of the PIVE scheme is expected to see the sector shift 800,000 units in 2014, which would be 11 per cent up on 2013. The automobile sector has

been gripped by crisis since 2007, with high unemployment and low consumer spending taking their toll on sales.

In 2012, the sector saw its worst year for sales since 1986. Anfac and

Ganvam also noted the continued fall in prices. According to figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE), in 2013 the average cost of cars fell 0.3 per cent, compared to a general inflation rate for the year of 0.3 per cent.

Suicides on the rise

the number of suicides in Spain in 2012 rose 11.3 per cent over the previous year to 3,539, according to figures released by the National Statistics institute (iNe). the figures showed that suicide was the main cause of unnatural death, above traffic accidents. More men than women took their own lives, 2,724 and 815 respectively. Suicides were also concentrated in the age group 24-34 and were the second most common cause of death after tumours in this category. However, although the crisis and the rise in the number of suicides coincide in time, experts were reluctant to argue that there is a cause-and-effect phenomenon. they said the increase in the number of suicides is not alarming because the figures were more or less within the same range as in the years before the crisis broke in 2008.

Underground economy flourishing

the economic crisis has caused the country’s black market economy to grow significantly over the past few years, according to a study released last week by the Finance Ministry's technical staff union (Gestha). its report, entitled “the Underground economy takes its toll. the increase in Fraud during the Crisis”, calculates that the value of under-thetable business in 2012 amounted to €253 billion, equivalent to 24.6 per cent of GdP – 6.8 percentage points, or €60 billion more than at the start of the crisis in 2008. Gestha calculates that black market deals increased annually by €15 billion in the period 2008-2012.

the report said the provinces with “strikingly low” levels of black market activity are those with a concentration of large national and international companies such as Madrid, tarragona, Lleida, Barcelona and La Rioja. However, this is offset by the fact that such companies are more prone to use financial engineering to reduce their tax burden. the report does not include figures from the Basque Country, Navarre and Ceuta and Melilla, which have different tax systems. the report said that almost 70 percent of cash transactions in black market activity use €500 notes.

Dismissed editor blames government The dismissal of one of the country's most well known journalists – the founding editor of El Mundo, Pedro J. Ramírez – sent shockwaves through the media last week.

The paper's parent company, United Editorial, which is owned by RCS MediaGroup, an Italian company, ousted Ramírez after a board meeting last Thursday. Instead of blaming his

Pedro J Ramírez

of getting revenge for a series of corruption cases which El Mundo has been publishing since the beginning of last year, one of which involved Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. He told reporters his dismissal was "a show of force by a government that wants to send a message, not just to El Mundo, but to the whole media sector, that whoever acts in a way that the government sees

as inconvenient will pay the consequences”.

Rajoy has not commented on Ramírez’s dismissal but Economy minister Luis de Guindos said during a radio interview that “the government has a lot of other things to do” besides trying to influence a newspaper’s management. Last November, the paper's Italian owners

were forced to inject €400 million of capital into its parent company to keep it afloat. Media observers have said Ramírez’s

removal could indicate that the Italian company intends to sell off assets or break up its Spanish operations.

World News Al-Qaeda disavows militants in Syria

In an online statement on Sunday, Al-Qaeda's general command insisted it has no links with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), which has been involved in deadly clashes with rebels in Syria.

ISIS grew out of the former Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), a jihadist militant umbrella group that is believed to have helped create the al-Nusra Front in Syria in mid-2011.

In April 2013, ISI leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi announced the merger of his group and al-Nusra and the creation of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS).

However, the move was rejected by al-Nusra leader Abu Mohammed al-Julani and Zawahiri, al-Qaeda's overall leader, who recognised al-Nusra as its sole Syrian offshoot. Since then, ISIS and al-Nusra have operated as separate entities, with the latter focusing on toppling President Bashar al-Assad and maintaining better relations with other rebels. ISIS has seemed to be

more concerned about territorial gains and implementing its extreme interpretation of Islamic law.

As many as 2,300 people are reported to have been killed in the confrontations between ISIS's predominantly foreign fighters and rebels from both Western-backed and Islamist groups. On Sunday, at least 16

Islamist rebels were killed when an ISIS suicide bomber blew himself up at their headquarters in Aleppo province. Another 26 people reportedly died on Saturday in Aleppo in twin suicide bombings blamed on ISIS. ISIS fighters have also taken over the Iraqi city of Fallujah in the past month, and face what appears to be an imminent assault by the army.

Dozens charged after raid on Kenya mosque The 129 people arrested in the port city of Mombasa appeared in court on Monday on charges of belonging to Somalia's Islamist militant group, al-Shabab, and were remanded in custody until Friday, when they will be

asked to plead. Police raided a mosque in the city on Sunday, saying militants were carrying out training there.

At least two people died in ensuing riots, which lasted hours. Kenya has

been under pressure to crack down on militants blamed for a spate of attacks, including the Westgate siege. Somalia's al-Qaeda-affiliated alShabab Islamists have carried out a series of attacks in Kenya, in what

they say is retaliation for Nairobi's decision to deploy troops to Somalia to hunt them down. Its militants stormed the Westgate shopping centre last year, sparking a four-day siege in which at least 67 people were killed.

Millions in 'need of food'

The United Nations estimates that 3.7 million people are in acute need of food in South Sudan as a result of the civil conflict there. The UN's humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan Toby lanzer said £790 million was needed to deal with the crisis. The fighting was sparked by a political dispute between President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar on december 15th and has killed thousands of people and displaced around 863,000 to date. Of that number, 740,000 are still in South Sudan and the others have left for neighbouring countries. Mr lanzer said the number of those needing food represented around a third of South Sudan's population. A ceasefire was agreed after talks last week between the two sides but fighting has continued in some areas.

MONTENEGRO

Tito, Marx and Engels in hell

A church in Montenegro has caused an uproar by displaying a fresco depicting Yugoslav communist leader Josip Broz Tito in the fires of hell along with Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Works by Marx and Engels were required reading when Montenegro was part of communist Yugoslavia. The newly built Church of Resurrection in the capital Podgorica has already drawn criticism for its lavish design.

Critics now say the church should not be interfering in politics. One church leader, named only as dragan, said Marx, Engels and Tito "personify communist evil in the Balkans" and the anonymous artist should be "allowed the freedom to see things as he wishes". however, he added: "he cannot judge, in the name of the Church, who belongs in hell or heaven." Visitors to the church were divided over whether the fresco should remain. One said the Church should not interfere in the secular world and determine who deserves a place in hell or heaven, while another said communism had caused "so much evil".

he was found by people living on the island of Ebon Atoll last Thursday and reached the islands' capital, Majuro, for a medical examination on Monday. he said his travelling companion died at sea many months ago. Emaciated and wearing only ragged underpants, Mr Ivan washed ashore when his boat floated onto a reef at the small, isolated island. he apparently survived the 5,000-mile ordeal by catching fish, birds and turtles with his bare hands. School gunman held after killing two

A student who entered a Moscow secondary school and took more than 20 fellow pupils hostage has been arrested, Moscow police said on Monday. When police officers arrived on the scene, the gunman opened fire, killing one police officer and a biology teacher, and injuring another policeman.

Police said the hostages the gunman took have been released. The incident, on the outskirts of the Russian capital, comes as Russia prepares to host the Winter Olympic Games, due to start in Sochi this week. The gunman is believed to be a pupil at School No. 263 on the northern outskirts of Moscow. A school official told Russian television that all children and teachers had been evacuated from the school after the incident. Officials said the gunman had made no demands.

Cancer 'tidal wave' on horizon

The world is facing a "tidal wave" of cancer, and restrictions on alcohol and sugar need to be considered, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday. Fourteen million people a year are diagnosed with cancer, but that is predicted to increase to 19 million by 2025, 22 million by 2030 and 24 million by 2035. The developing world will bear the brunt of the extra cases.

The WHO said half of the cases could be prevented, adding that there was now a "real need" to focus on cancer prevention by tackling smoking, obesity and drinking. The World Cancer Research Fund said there was an "alarming" level of naivety about diet's role in cancer.

A spokesman for the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer said the global cancer burden is markedly increasing predominately due to the ageing of the populations and population growth.

The WHO's World Cancer Report 2014 said prevention had a "crucial role in combating the tidal wave of cancer which we see coming across the world". One of the report's authors said human behaviour was behind many cancers such as

sunbathing "until you're cooked evenly on both sides".

Meanwhile, a survey of 2,046 people in the UK by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) suggested 49% do not know that diet increases the risk of developing cancer.

A third said cancer was mainly due to family history, but the charity said no more than 10% of cancers were down to inherited genes.

Opposition to curb president's powers Ukraine's opposition MPs started to push for laws to reduce the power of the president when parliament began a new term on Tuesday, calling for a return to an earlier constitution that would give parliament greater control over the formation of governments.

Arseny Yatsenyuk, leader of the largest opposition party, Fatherland, said a return to the 2004 constitution

would "cancel the dictatorial authority of the president and transfer the right of governing the country to the Ukrainian people".

Opposition leaders are also seeking other concessions including a broader amnesty for those arrested in antigovernment protests. Mr Yanukovych returned from four days of sick leave on Monday,

saying Ukraine was facing "extremism" and "a struggle for power".

Under pressure from the opposition, Mr Yanukovych has scrapped anti-protest laws and accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and the cabinet last week. But his opponents want him to resign before the end of his mandate in 2015 and to call early elections.

Detained asylum children investigated Australia's Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has announced an inquiry into the mandatory detention of children seeking asylum. More than 1,000 children are currently in Australia's immigration detention facilities, the AHRC said.

The commission's first report on the subject, in 2004, found that

mandatory detention of children of asylum-seekers was inconsistent with Australia's human rights obligations, and that longterm detention placed children "at high risk of serious mental harm".

Answering AHRC's accusation that there was a lack of co-operation from the immigration department, Immigration

Britain continues to Hospitals be battered by storms under fire but improving Britain continues to be battered by heavy rain and high winds as weather forecasters warn of worse to come this week and another area of low pressure moves in from the Atlantic.

Many homes were flooded over the weekend pushing emergency services to the limit yet again, and desperate round-the-clock efforts were being made to pump water off the Somerset Levels (pictured) in England in the knowledge that more rain is to fall. For many this week will be the sixth week of flooding and disruption to normal life. In Wales a group of students were rescued after an eight-hour battle with the elements in the Cambrian Mountains.

Weather conditions were described as “atrocious”.

The coastguard completed a search for an angler who disappeared from rocks in Aberdeenshire but he was not found, and six French fishermen were rescued by helicopter and lifeboat off the Cornish coast after their vessel was hit by a giant wave.

disabled by a large wave before being surrounded by flood water and ten people had to be brought to safety.

While little can be done to stop the bad weather, the rivers on the Somerset Levels are to be dredged following the intervention of Prime Minister David Cameron who visited the area, but flood water levels need to drop before it will be safe to carry out the work.

The Care Quality Commission has said hospitals should get rid of outdated working practices, put an end to widespread bullying and heal the rift between hospital managers and clinicians.

Chairman David Prior, writing in the Sunday Telegraph, said: “Too often it (the National Health Service) delights in the ritual humiliation of those deemed to fail, tolerates and institutionalises outdated working practices and oldfashioned hierarchies, and

can almost encourage ‘managers’ and ‘clinicians’ to occupy opposing camps.”

The Department of Health has already introduced many changes aimed at improving the performance of ailing hospitals following the Mid-Staffordshire scandal, where hundreds of patients died and suffered neglect. Hospitals where failure was previously being tolerated are now being turned around.

Money rolls in for the taxman The end of January is the deadline for payment of tax to the taxman in Britain, the so-called selfassessment deadline. In fact many accountants up and down the country burn the midnight oil and even work right through the Christmas break to get their clients’ affairs in order. There is always a last minute rush and the Government was receiving £17,000 a second in payments in the final hours before the deadline.

But even the taxman has a heart. HM Revenue and Customs said they would take into account reasonable excuses for missing the deadline, such as the flooding in Somerset, which has disrupted households and effectively cut them off from the outside world. As for the rest, they face a penalty of £100 for a late return followed by extra penalties of £10 a day on top.

Man versus machines on the Underground

The London Underground can be a little claustrophobic but it is a quick and efficient way of getting around the city when it is working properly. And therein lies the problem, for the transport system has been used as a political football too often, even in the runup to the Olympic Games!

And they are at it again. There have been last ditch talks to avert a 48-hour walk-out over ticket office closures and members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union and the

Transport Salaried Staffs Association are up in arms at the potential loss of jobs.

I must admit I often tend to use a manned ticket office when I have the choice and have found them a useful source of information as they can tell you in a sentence the best route to a particular location. But there will always be progress and it can only be a matter of time before they get rid of the train drivers as well.

Betting shops on the increase

Surprisingly the recession does not appear to have curbed gambling in Britain and in spite of growing online activity the number of betting shops on Britain’s high streets has grown – in London it has doubled in a decade. It has become a matter of concern to the Local Government Association which wants new powers to stop betting shops being clustered in town centres. The association represents 370 councils in England and Wales.

A spokesman said the association wanted licensing laws to be updated so councils can consider the impact a betting shop would have on their local economy and existing businesses. It would allow councils to target specific areas where the cumulative impact of betting shops is becoming unacceptable.

New ‘payday’ loan figures released

There has been concern in Britain for some time over short-term ‘payday’ loans at high interest rates, a product of the recession that some fear targets the financially vulnerable and drives them deeper into debt. Independent figures from the Competition Commission suggest that 35 per cent of loans are not repaid on time. From April tough new rules will apply. Lenders will have to put risk warnings on advertising, the number of times a loan may be rolled over will be limited to twice and there will be restrictions on the number of attempts lenders can make to claw back money. The Office of Fair Trading found payday loan firms base their business models on people who cannot afford to repay loans on time. Many of the million borrowers annually have been turned down for credit elsewhere and over 50 per cent have had debt problems in the last five years.

RAFA Spain Branches Hunt Friendship Weekend is on 14th to 16th February for

The Royal Air Forces Association, RAFA, is represented in Spain by three Branches. These are Costa del Sol (formerly Benalmádena Branch and now incorporating Gibraltar), Costa Blanca, and North Costa Blanca. Between them, these Branches provide Welfare assistance to a considerable number of clients, far more than most other military-based charities. They provide assistance and help in areas where others cannot. All in all, RAFA provide a valuable service to many of the ex-RAF members, their families and dependents. The combined financial assistance given is considerable. The Costa del Sol Branch alone disperses over 40,000€ each year and has reached over 60,000€ at its peak. However, Welfare is not all they provide. The motto is "Friendship - Help - Support". In order to be able to provide the help and support under the Welfare banner, it is essential that the Branches maintain the

"Friendship" element. This is done by each Branch having a programme of social events and formal gatherings. With this in mind, the Costa del Sol Branch decided to arrange a weekend event and invite the other two Branches to join them. They are pleased to say that this has now been arranged and the weekend of 14th to 16th February 2014 has been booked at Hotel Tamisa Golf. The other Branches have been invited and have responded well – the hotel is now fully booked. Bookings are being accepted for overflow accommodation. The hotel has provided a very competitive rate for the weekend, and also for the evening functions. The weekend will start with arrivals on Friday, an informal reception for the guests, followed by a Valentine’s Ball on Friday and a Grand Gala Celebration on Saturday. The Saturday function will also include the 10th Anniversary of the formation of the Costa Blanca Branch. Both evening

events are open to everyone and each will cost just 30€ per person including a reception, dinner with wine etc, and full entertainment. Please see the poster below for details and tickets, and also visit our website, www.rafacostadelsol.co.uk This is the first time, outside European Area and Annual Conferences, that the Spain Branches have got together for purely social reasons and every effort is being made to make it a success. This is also an opportunity for the general public to join in the fun and possibly get an understanding of RAFA. The main thing though is "friendship", and they would be delighted to see a "sold out" notice for the evening events, and ask everyone to help the weekend go with a swing. Full details and tickets can be obtained from the Hon. Secretary, Ron Sibbett, on 607586894.

killer

Detectives hunting suspected killer Robert Richard Fraser, also known as Robert Aleem and Shia Robert Jackson, have released CCTV footage of him that was recorded in Central London last Sunday. Police believe he could still be in central or northwest London areas and have asked the public to report any sightings of him. He is known to suffer from mental health issues and police say it is imperative that he is captured as soon as possible. He is suspected of murdering Maria DuqueTunjano, 48, a British national originally from Colombia, whose remains were found on Friday and who was working as a prostitute in the Earls Court area of West London. Her body is believed to have been lying there for several days and a post mortem found that she had died from blunt force trauma to the head. She was a resident of Streatham but used various flats in the Earls Court area for her work and it is believed a quantity of cash was stolen from her during the attack. Another sex worker was attacked in the Paddington area, not far from Earls Court, on January 18th and police believe that the two attacks could be linked. On that occasion the victim survived but was also robbed of cash.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Wall said: "It is imperative that we trace him as soon as possible. We have spoken to organisations with links to those who work in the sex industry to make them aware of this incident and pass on the message that personal safety of sex workers is of paramount importance." Maria was last seen alive on Tuesday January 28th.

Job cuts at major banks According to a source speaking to Reuters last week, Barclays is set to cut more jobs, the number being in “the low hundreds”, in its investment banking division while they try to reform the business in the coming few weeks. This comes on top of the numbers reported earlier this month and reports that travel to meetings will be restricted. Following the scandals of last year, Chief Executive Antony Jenkins pledged a fresh course for the bank. He named the plan “Project Transform” and in February he said Barclays would shed 1,900 jobs in its European banking portfolio and 1,800 in corporate and investment banking out of its 140,000 employees. Investment bankers are to have their pay cut and the bank has halted speculative trading in some asset classes in a bid to reform its corporate culture. Barclays full-year results are due to be disclosed next Tuesday, February 11th but in the meantime Barclays declined to comment on the possible extra job losses. Barclays are not the only ones cutting jobs. Lloyds Banking Group has

confirmed that it will in future be outsourcing 310 jobs and is cutting 1,080 jobs in the retail, risk, operational and commercial banking divisions as part of their strategic review announced in 2011. However, 90 new posts will be created within those same departments and the group are hoping that a number of the job losses would be shed through natural wastage with people leaving the bank for other jobs or for retirement, while voluntary redundancy is hoped to cover others. They said that compulsory redundancy would only take place as “a last resort”. Lloyds said that since the strategic review about a third of job losses have resulted in redundancies. The bank said in a statement: "Lloyds Banking Group is committed to working through these changes with employees in a careful and sensitive way. All affected employees have been briefed by their line manager today. The Group's recognised unions Accord, Unite and LTU were consulted prior to this announcement and will continue to be consulted."

Two charity events Junta premier for the animals intervenes in Catalonia impasse There will be a Quiz Night with raffle prizes at the Black Horse pub in Alhaurin el Grande starting at 8 pm on February 7th, in aid of Animals in Distress (A.I.D.)

Junta de Andalucia premier Susana Díaz was the unexpected mediator on Monday when she asked her Catalan counterpart, Artur Mas, to look for a definitive solution to break the political impasse between his government and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy over a proposed referendum on independence for the region. Díaz invited Mas to a private lunch during a visit to Barcelona to discuss options, including her party's own proposal for a constitutional reform that would give all regions more authority over their political, social and judicial affairs. She said "the only way to avoid a train wreck is to look at alternate routes for reform and dialogue", and called on both Rajoy and Mas to "start moving" toward breaking the political deadlock.

The Quiz Night will be held on the first Friday of every month. The Black Horse will also host an Afternoon Tea on the last Tuesday every month, from 2.30 to 5 pm, the next one to be held on February 25th.

She said that transferring the powers the central government currently holds in the regions would avoid any surprise policies in the future, as was the case with the reform introduced by Education Minister José Ignacio Wert, which establishes that classes in public schools in Catalonia must be taught primarily in Spanish. She also said that Catalonia's current

More than 80 countries will be represented and the 43 companies from Malaga, which include Green Food, Axarfruit, Reyes Gutiérrez, Mesbonsa, Tropical Milenium, Xarki, Sigfrido y Frunet, Trops, Frutas Montosa, Verga Verde and Tana, will have the

Its organisers have said that at least 80 per cent of the exhibitors will sign new contracts.

In a joint operation, the Guardia Civil and the Tax Office have smashed a gang engaged in drug trafficking and money laundering, seizing 900 kilos of cocaine, €72,000 in cash, jewellery, three vehicles, a boat, mobile phones and computers during four raids in Torremolinos and Malaga.

Five Spaniards were arrested in Malaga, although the gang also operated in Valencia. The system used to hide the drug until it was to be transported was to stash it in water-proof backpacks that were floating in the sea just under the surface off Valencia.

this winter has been one of the driest in recent years but the municipal authorities said last week that there is enough water in the reservoirs to see the western Costa through the summer. In addition to the desalination plant at Marbella, there are also several underground wells in Fuengirola and the Campo de Gibraltar to guarantee the supply. a spokesman for the acosol public water company said that even if it does not rain anymore this winter, "there is enough water to satisfy the demands of the 11 municipalities along the Costa".

She said the crime rate had dropped in all eight provinces, with Malaga leading with a drop of 8.4 per cent, followed by Jaen (7 per cent), Almeria and Granada, with 6.7 per cent, Cadiz (5.4 per cent), Cordoba and Huelva, with 2.7 per cent each, and Seville with the lowest drop of all, 2.2 per cent.

Vehicle theft dropped by 22.6 percent, robbery with violence by 9.8 percent and drug trafficking by 3.9 per cent. Sra Crespo said break-ins had stabilised, with an

increase of only 0.3 per cent. She attributed the drop to better training for the police forces which had made them more effective.

She said activities were being developed in 19

Muck-raking

I

don't know if it's the Spaniards in general who love muck-raking or just the journalists. If the corruption scandals are anything to go by, it could be the journalists. Everyone else just shrugs their shoulders and says "so what's new". However, the so-called "rosada" (pink) chat programmes, which just love a romance turned sour or a mudslinging divorce, get good ratings so it could be a nationwide pastime. (Don't ask me why these shows are called pink – probably something to do with the love content – but I would use the world "yellow" or "gutter" because they can get quite nasty.)

T

heir latest target is the marriage of Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia, which is apparently heading for the rocks. According to the online El Confidencial Digital (ECD), one of the reasons behind this is that Letizia stopped wearing her engagement ring a couple of years back. This, according to the "pinkies", means that Letizia is unhappy in her marriage and wants out. However, the explanation is much simpler. Apparently Felipe asked his now infamous brother-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin, to buy the ring for him. The purchase of the ring had to be kept top secret until the engagement was announced officially so who better than Urdangarin for the job – the jeweller would automatically conclude it was a present for his cherished wife, the Princess Cristina.

A

ll this happened over ten years ago when Urdangarin's reputation was still as pure as driven snow. However, Felipe broke with him two years ago and neither he nor his wife have anything to do with Urdangarin or the princess. So off came the ring. That's sad, because the Royal family always seemed to be so united – until Urdangarin got himself up to his eyeballs in embezzlement charges.

T

he other clue to the marriage going downhill is that Letizia often appeared sulky in public until not so long ago. However, she's improved in the last year or so but, as ECD points out, Letizia has a sharp tongue and often forgets to curb it. She's also a perfectionist and can get very ratty when something isn't just so. However, as ECD also pointed out, Felipe knew what he was getting and seems quite happy to put up with her faults in order to enjoy her good points, which are many. On the day they announced their engagement to the press, he got an idea of what was to come.

www.thenewsonline.es

Martin Delfín

Family troubles Writes for the English language version of

W

hen they were being interrogated by a bunch journalists in the palace gardens, Letizia more or less told Felipe to shut up and let her do some talking. It didn't upset Felipe – he just laughed it off – but apparently Letizia was told afterwards, probably by Queen Sofia who's a bit of a stickler for protocol, that no-one does that to the heir to the throne in public and she's played the obedient wife part in public ever since, which apparently doesn't sit too easily on her.

S

o while I'm putting the muckrakers in their place, I may as well do a bit of muck-raking myself. The target: Pedro J. Ramirez, the man who founded the country's second top newspaper, El Mundo, 25 years ago. To get a balanced view of what's going on in Spain, I read El Mundo which always leaned more towards the Partido Popular, along with El Pais (Socialist), ABC (monarchist) and La Razon, the most right-wing of the big dailies. I never read Pedro J's Sunday column because it was written in a most convoluted style and aimed at people who had inside knowledge of political behind-the-scenes shenanigans – never spelling anything out, just hinting – so it was a bit double Dutch to me.

H

owever, El Mundo offered a centre-right balance to the often way-out Socialist El Pais, and I considered it worth reading. In fact, Pedro J (Jota) , as he has always been called, uncovered a lot of genuine scandals and El Mundo had a solid reputation for getting at the truth. Then at the beginning of last year Pedro J started attacking the Partido Popular and Mariano Rajoy in particular, digging up the dirt on the PP's former treasurer, Luis Barcenas. El Pais was the first to publish sheets allegedly torn from Barcenas's accounts ledgers, but Pedro J took them up in a big way, under the impression that it would sell papers. But it didn't, because he probably drove away a lot of PP readers and didn't win over the ones who were getting their info on the scandal from El Pais.

A

ccording to ECD, he also had a bit of a falling out with Rajoy, which may have helped fuel the fire. I think the owners of the paper were more worried about its financial situation, although according to the ECD they weren't too happy about his new anti-PP stance either. So now he's paying the price.

W

hen there is trouble inside the family the last thing many want is to air their dirty laundry in public. This is what is happening with the Partido Popular (PP); it has been trying to keep its internal problems – albeit with not much success – under its hat. The deep divisions which have been suspected for some time came to light last week when the PP announced that veteran PP Euro MP Jaime Mayor Oreja would not be running for re-election in the May 25th European Parliamentary race, citing personal reasons. This influential hard liner, who has been a favourite among groups associated with the victims of ETA violence, has been very critical of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's policies for dealing with the Basque terrorist organisation. Among other things, he believes the current PP government wasn't sharp enough to head off last year's decision by the European Court of Justice that resulted in the release of several dozen ETA prisoners when justices threw out a tough sentencing policy that kept terrorists and other inmates locked up for longer periods.

O

reja, a former interior minister under Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, has been one of the PP's leading voices in the European Parliament since 2004 and Spain's most conservative stalwart representative in the People's Party (EPP). Besides outside support, he also has a lot of backers inside the PP who also side with his position – in other words, he rakes in a chunk of votes.

T

hen, just by sheer coincidence, if you believe in such things, Aznar, Rajoy's mentor and once political benefactor, announced that he would not be attending the PP annual political conference held over the weekend due to prior engagements abroad. It was a fat snub for Rajoy and a surprising decision that dismayed many of the party members. They were counting on Aznar to address the conference and give them some much needed encouragement, even though his remarks are often archaic and do not fit with the realities of today's society. Nonetheless, the former prime minister, who is admired by many in the ultra right, is considered the most influential PP political leader in the country. So it goes without saying that Aznar's decision to stay away from that big family reunion in Valladolid was the clearest sign yet that all is not well within the PP.

T

he former PM has also been very critical of Rajoy's anti-terrorism policies, and the way he has been handling the runaway situation in

Catalonia. He believes that Rajoy should have cut off the hydra snake's head way before it began to multiply into a multi-faceted creature that has surfaced with the support of radical pro-independence leaders drawn into Catalan public affairs.

T

he two absences at the Valladolid conference were quickly played down by the PP leadership. Rajoy made no mention of the no-shows. Instead he focused his sermon on the positive recovery efforts taken by his administration, and issued soothing words for would-be voters with pledges that he will begin to cut taxes beginning next year. There were, however, no explanations on specific remedies aimed at bringing down the nation's shocking unemployment rate, which on Tuesday rose slightly with the number of social security affiliates dropping in January. Forget tax cuts, Mr Rajoy, the nation needs jobs; the youth of Spain need to be assured they will have a future. Our prime minister assures us that his tax restructuring plan, which he will conveniently announce in April, one month ahead of the European elections, will stimulate the economy and encourage Spanish companies to hire more workers. Yet he didn't give any type of clue how this magic formula, which hasn't been tried elsewhere in Europe, will actually work.

R

ajoy and the rest of the PP seem to be living in another world, caring about their own welfare and political clout while forgetting about the millions who are still suffering trying to put food on the table for their families. We hear from financial whiz kids like Luis de Guindos and Santander's Emilio Botin that Spain has not only seen the light at the end of the tunnel but is emerging from a devastating period. They forge these opinions by looking at the numbers, but seem to overlook the microeconomics of the hundreds of thousands of Spanish families who haven't been able to see that incoming wealth trickle down.

T

he PP needs to forget about its image problem – it was ruined years ago and will take even more years to repair – and set aside its petty internal differences, put the inflammatory abortion reform issue to rest, and focus on the realities of Spanish society. If not, Rajoy will go down in Spanish history as another in the long line of prime ministers who just never could get a grip of things.

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Can you help send this child to America to get the treatment he needs? Jake is a nine-year-old boy who suffers from complex partial epilepsy in the frontal lobe (right hand side of the brain). This type of epilepsy is very drug resistant and hard to treat. Diagnosed when he was two, we had a few short stays in hospital for medication adjustments but nothing major for the first five years. Then two years ago, just before his seventh birthday everything changed, he started to have lots of seizures which built up to 150–200 day.

He has spent nearly a whole year in hospital, between the Costa del Sol and the specialised children’s hospital in Madrid. A focal cortical dysplasia (malformation of cortical development) was discovered, which is a congenital abnormality where the neurons develop larger than normal. This causes the signals sent through the neurons in this area to misfire and send an incorrect signal which causes a seizure.

At this stage Jake’s seizures were so bad, and uncontrollable he went into “status epilepticus” (continuous state of seizure). He was put into an induced coma on three occasions to enable his brain to rest. Over a period of 18 months he had four major seven-hour operations – the last one in April – to remove the affected area. The dysplasia is in the motor part of the brain and it caused him to lose the use of his left arm and hand, with considerable damage to the nervous system and facial paralysis. Jake went through rigorous daily physiotherapy for three months and learned to walk again four times.

Despite this the seizures continued. Currently he is having different types of seizures; a PARTIAL with uncontrollable facial movements where blood vessels burst in his eyes; an ABSENCE where he totally disconnects, doesn’t

respond and sometimes he sits and rocks backwards and forwards. Also he will spontaneously laugh, have outbursts of anger and aggression, or he go into a state of confusion – he will walk away and doesn’t know where he is or how he got there. It’s heartbreaking to see. A recent stay in the hospital in Madrid revealed there is still a part of the dysplasia left, and a further focal area has been discovered, showing abnormal activity at the back of the brain. This type of epilepsy is progressive and the damage done over time through the seizures and medication overload is irreparable. His condition will worsen with the onset of puberty … leading to severe memory and language deficiency (Rasmussen Syndrome). This has started to happen as he has already lost his peripheral vision. Jake is the only child in Spain to have four operations of this type.

The neurosurgeons here are some of the best in Europe but they cannot operate further as they do not have the technology or the surgical experience. They strongly recommend that we take him to a specialised children’s hospital the ¨Rainbow Clinic¨ in Cleveland, Ohio. They have years of experience and some of the best neurologists and neurosurgeons in the world. They also have a 7 Teslas MRI magnetic scanner ( Madrid only has a 3T), which can detect all the abnormalities of the brain. He will need extensive tests, and will hopefully qualify for surgery to remove a larger area that’s causing all these problems. Jake is a funny, loving and caring son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. He deserves a better quality of life and the opportunity to a future. He has already missed two years of schooling and the chance to build relationships with his peers. I cannot sit back and see this happening to my son when I know something can be done. I want to give him the best chance in life. He is just a child who deserves so much more. We need to raise €120,000 made up of an initial assessment and tests at the Rainbow Clinic

in Cleveland costing $35,000 (€22,000) with further operations coming in at around $95,000 (€70,000), plus the cost of flights and accommodation. Please help no matter how small. Every little helps because together WE can make a difference and CHANGE JAKE´S LIFE!!

To find out more go to www.gofundme.com/Jake NeedsYourHelp where you can see updates on how

much has been raised and what is happening with Jake and his mum who updates the site, or go on to Facebook: www.facebook.com/jake’s diary

So far (as at February 3rd 2014) €18,865 has been raised by 170 people in two months.

Pets, Vets & Guests with David The Dogman If you’re close to your dog and he follows you around the home even to the toilet then you should be aware that when you leave home irrespective, if it is for 5 or 10 minutes, your pet will suffer stress known as separation anxiety.

Many dogs will chew, lick themselves and be disruptive or destructive when left alone. Dogs might urinate, defecate, bark, howl, chew, dig or try to escape – these are symptoms of distress. When you return home, even after five minutes the dog acts as though it’s been years since he’s seen his mum or dad!

I suggest you close doors after you when you go to another room and not allow the dog to sleep on the bed. How about making his bed beside you for a few days and gradually move the dog to outside the bedroom? Try it I promise it works. Boy Boy has always been a healthy dog and talkative. Those of you who do not know about the Rottweiller will be surprised to learn that they are one of the most talkative breeds. Unfortunately some owners mistake this chat and think the dog is being aggressive and have them destroyed. What a shame if only they would have spoken to an expert.

Nazli says: Processional caterpillars (pictured).

February and March are the time of the year that the processionary caterpillars are fully grown and fall out of the nests in the pine trees onto the ground. They follow each other in procession to find a nesting place in the soil. During that time our pets can come in contact with them, triggered by the movement or glittering in the sun. The caterpillars are highly dangerous and cause a very nasty allergic reaction in dogs. Upon

contact with the tongue it will swell three times the size. They can suffer from anaphylactic shock and die. It’s a good idea for your dog to wear a muzzle. And if you can avoid the areas where these creatures are! Celia says: Don’t put feed bowls together.

Cats all feeding from a row of food bowls look cute and you will find many of these photos on the web. Cute they may be. But they are stressful for cats, even cats that get on with each other. Cats go hunting on their own and they eat on their own. They don’t socialise over a meal like us. So keep those food bowls well apart. Anna says: House Rules

Once the decision has been made to get a dog as a new family member there are some things to consider. Before you bring this dog into your home make sure the family agree on the house rules. Do we allow him on the sofa, can he sleep in our bed, etc. It is very confusing for a dog if these things are not clear from the beginning. If you have a problem about your cat or dog be it veterinary, behaviour etc. drop me a line at david@thedogman.net Many answers are on my site www.thedogman.net and plenty of poems. Tune in to our show every Saturday on TRE at 10.am.

It grew from singers getting up in back room bars, the karaoke of its day, to take over Saloon Bars and Pleasure Gardens. Audience participation was very important and Julian in the theatre bar will do his best to provide encouraging liquids. After the First World War Music Hall morphed into the more sedate Variety but still providing the music, fun and laughter available from Friday of this weekend coming.

This year the show has been devised and directed by Sian Hopkins who was a TV star early in life before training at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She then worked with the great Joan Littlewood in her 'Oh What A Lovely War' touring as a lead all over Europe. Her immense experience in musical theatre, which includes being in the 1960 Royal Variety Show with Nat King Cole, Liberace and Sammy Davis Junior has helped create a show not

to be missed. Her performers include many who have delighted the Salon Varietes audiences for many years.

Her team includes Colin Pollard, familiar to many from previous Music Halls as Chairman. Colin had a varied career in theatre and cabaret in the north of England including many Music Hall shows before being compere for Gala Shows at the Blackpool Tower for six years.

AmericAn Hustle Directed by David O Russell Starring: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence Catch up with one of this year’s leading contenders for Oscar glory and find out if the movie lives up to the hype and the pretty universal plaudits from the pundits. American Hustle has been picking up plenty of gongs during the awards season and is leading the Oscar pack with 10 nominations – along with Gravity. That’s one more than 12 Years A Slave, which is still hot favourite to lift the best movie Oscar. But with all four leading actors nominated, along with director Russell, American Hustle is destined to walk away with a slew of awards.

It’s loosely based on a famous FBI sting involving a ‘fake sheik’ and tells the tale of 1970s conman Irving Rosenfeld (Bale looking nothing like Batman) and his sultry

Relationships with colleagues prove challenging this week and the art of diplomacy and tact need to be deployed when dealing with superiors. Your patience could be tested as you wish for everything to be done and sorted out straight away; however, you still have to wait a bit longer for the universe to catch up with you. Benefits can be found in paying attention to the details, doing the groundwork and slowing down – it won’t be for long. A real and lasting opportunity for inner transformation is occurring at the moment. You are being shown various things that can bring you clarity with a situation you have in the past found yourself stalling or procrastinating. It is time to get rid of the things that have no value to you now and draw a line underneath it all. Insights are coming thick and fast, a mystery is solved and the steep climb to the top of the mountain ensures a nicer vista once you get there. Compassionate moments bring an increased sensitivity and you start to see a side of others that you were unaware was there. It could be hard to concentrate at times and your mind could go wandering off occasionally and to others it would appear that you were literally in your own world. You could find that you are more reactive to the effects of alcohol and any medication right now. Make sure you give yourself enough space and room to breathe this week. Females play an important role in your life this week and through an acquaintance you will reap the benefits in some way. Relationships come to the fore and a close partnership will be tested, intense feelings will either turn to jealousy or to transformation, a hint of reality highlights the bond between you both and it either turns into a commitment or it could finish. Either way it is the force of reality that neither party can escape from. It is all about your root foundations and getting them sorted out once and for all. In your heart you long for a place to call home and this week is all about deciding where that is or how to make your current abode homely and a reflection of you. Perhaps you will pick up the trowel or the decorating tools or even start house hunting. Family may need some sort of support at this time and this may prompt you to get involved and help them out. This is a chilled out time, the calm after the storm, I expect you have been pushing yourself to the limit and now the pressure is off and you can enjoy some fun and leisure time to recharge your batteries. Opportunities and invites are likely to come your way and with a little effort on your part you can capitalise on the beneficial energy that is flooding towards you. Give yourself a little pampering Virgo – you deserve it.

LIBRA

With Mars still very active in your sign this is giving you the impetus and drive to get things moving, you could literally move mountains with this rocket of energy sizzling away inside of you. Nothing is impossible right now as long as you direct this force into something that takes energy or needs doing you can achieve so much. On the other hand you could find that you are a little touchy within a relationship and you rd September 23 - may need to think before speaking so you don’t land yourself in hot water. October 22nd

You feel you know where you are at and have got to the point where you are quite comfortable with your surroundings and routine. In fact you do not want things to change, you like your life at the moment, however, this week expect something unexpected and try not to let it ruffle your feathers too much. The one thing in life that is constant is change and not all change is disruptive but instead can add another colour to your palette. You are wound up like a coil lately, pushing against what seems to be an almighty rock that you just can’t move out of the way. The key to this week is to find another way, think outside of the box, do not be afraid to try new things, pioneer your journey out of the situation. If you are pushing then stop, change tactic. Friends and acquaintances prove very helpful right now, so networking will reap rewards and get you back on track.

There is light at the end of a tunnel, happiness at the end of the rainbow. An intense situation is coming to an end and you will want to build bridges and put into place a support structure for the future. Connections and emotional bonds with family develop and you find a new level of communicating with each other that is easier and productive. Things that were hidden now come to the fore and it is easier to see the truth. A change is as good as a rest and for you there is no greater fact than that this week. A break away or a holiday or even a change in routine will be like a breath of fresh air and will blow the cobwebs away allowing you to look at your life and its challenges with a new perspective. You are likely to be more sensitive to atmospheres right now and can pick up on under currents, your radar is right on track. Old wounds have a chance of healing; this is a beneficial time for you, when all seems to flow. You are in the right current, in the right river and heading in the right direction with nature. The things that are usually a struggle seem to be easier and all starts to fit into place. Your intuition is spot on and this enables you to navigate your way through the residue, the after effects of an old storm. Interacting with those that are special in your life brings rewards.

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Sue,

What are antioxidants and what benefit do they have for my skin? Judy, Torremolinos Dear Judy,

Just as oxidation creates rust on the surface of iron objects, oxidation in the body causes the breakdown of cells, producing free radicals that attack healthy cells and speed up the ageing process. Antioxidants work against these free radicals

reducing their harmful effects and aiding the repair of the damaged cells. Sunlight destroys the vitamin A and antioxidants present in your your skin's cells so you need to compensate by using products enriched with antioxidants. Dear Calvin,

Following on from your letter about pregnancy, I am currently pregnant and wonder if it is safe to colour my hair? Stacy, Los Boliches

Dear Stacy,

There is no hard evidence that colouring your hair when pregnant is dangerous but my advice would be not to in the first three months as on-scalp colours do absorb slightly and I feel it is better not to take a risk. Why not opt for highlights? This is a much safer option as the product does not come into contact with the scalp. Dear Sue,

I have a very sensitive skin. Do I still need to

exfoliate as my face is very red afterwards. Maria, Mijas Costa Dear Maria,

Sensitive skins need to be treated with great care. You don't want to use a grainy exfoliator that will strip too many of the skin’s external layers and will then allow excessive water loss.

I would suggest you use one such as 'hydra biologique' which when you apply goes on as a gel, with a very gentle massage it

turns to an oil which moisturises whilst removing the dead cells. After three minutes rinse this off and apply a mask for dry and sensitive skins. Dear Calvin,

I have psorasis in my scalp will colouring make it worse? Shirley, Mijas Dear Shirley,

Again there is no proven evidence that colouring your hair will make your

psorasis worse but dont even consider it if your psorasis is open or bleeding. Please remember that the colouring is a chemical process and perhaps an offscalp application would be a safer option. If you have any questions for Calvin or Sue, you can contact them on email – Calvin, calton1@hotmail .co.uk and Sue’s email is aniathome05 @gmail.com. 'Tinnitus risk' of noisy nights out About two-thirds of people are left with ringing in their ears after a night out at a club, gig or pub, according to a poll by campaign group Action on Hearing Loss. The poll of 1,000 adults also showed a third would ignore the "safe level" on their music players.

The group warns that

people doing either increase the risk of tinnitus, and urged people to wear ear defenders to gigs and to "turn down the volume". Action on Hearing Loss warned that one in 10 people across the UK is affected by tinnitus every day, ranging from a "light buzzing" to a "constant

can to fund research into treatments, and in the meantime offer support to people who suffer."

Paul Oakenfold, the DJ and record producer, is supporting the campaign. He said: "I feel passionately about listening to music safely, and urge music lovers to

wear ear defenders to gigs and avoid dangerously high volumes on personal music players.

"Getting decent noisecancelling headphones also cuts down the risk of damaging your ears and suffering tinnitus caused by overexposure to loud music. No-one wants that."

Cells from eyes of dead 'may give sight to blind' Cells taken from the donated eyes of dead people may be able to give sight to the blind, researchers at the University College London's Institute for Ophthalmology have suggested, after tests in rats showed the human cells could restore some vision to completely blind rats. They said similar results in humans would improve quality of life and added: "They probably wouldn't be able to read, but they could move around and detect a table in a room. "They would be able to identify a kettle and cup to make a cup of tea. Their quality of life would be so much better, even if they could not read or watch TV."

Donated corneas are

already used to improve some people's sight, but the UCL team extracted a special kind of cell from the back of the eye. These Muller glia cells are a type of adult stem cell capable of transforming into the specialised cells in the back of the eye and may be useful for treating a wide range of sight disorders.

Human stem cell trials are already taking place using material taken from embryos. However, this is ethically charged and takes several months to prepare the cells. The Muller glia cells can be ready within a week. The researchers said the next step is to prepare the cells as a clinical grade treatment in order for human trials to begin. They believe it could take three years before such a trial takes place.

Stephen Fry plays Trevor Davies in the new 24 … and you can best it’ll be a blockbuster with you hanging onto the edge of your seat

The 'QI' host will take on the recurring role of Trevor Davies in '24: Live Another Day', which is currently being filmed in the capital. According to the official info on the series, Fry's character (pictured) is 'a strong and charismatic leader whose friendship with President Heller (William Devane), and the Anglo-American alliance itself, comes under tremendous pressure because of personal and

political crises'. Fry confirmed the casting, tweeting a link to a story on Deadline, and adding: “Well, this particular cat is out of the bag.” The new series, which takes place over 12 episodes, finds Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer a fugitive on the run from the CIA in London.

Fox will premiere the new series with a two-hour special on May 5th in the

Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman dies The 46-year-old Oscar winning actor was found dead in the bathroom at his Greenwich Village, New York apartment on Sunday by his assistant and a friend, surrounded by what official said tests have revealed that there were around 50 envelopes containing heroin near his body which was discovered with a needle sticking out of his arm. A post mortem is to be carried out by the New York Medical Examiner’s Office later. Hoffman was due to pick up his three children on Sunday but failed to show up.

He had spoken openly about his drug dependency when he was younger and admitted in interviews last year that he had fallen off the wagon and developed a heroin problem that led to some time in rehab.

His family called the news "tragic and sudden". He is survived by his partner of 15 years, Mimi O'Donnell, and their three children. "We are

devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone," the family said in a statement.

He won his Academy Award for his role as Truman Capote and three other Oscar nominations for The Master, Doubt and Charlie Wilson's War. He also received three Tony nominations for his work on Broadway, including Death Of A Salesman. He was photographed at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah last month when people commented that he looked tired, grey and despondent and despite all his success he tended to shun the limelight saying in an interview in October 2011 that he believed everybody struggled with self-love. He said: "I think that's pretty much the human condition, you know, waking up and trying to live your day in a way that you can go to sleep and feel OK about yourself".

He still gives her one a day in her lunch box but he says the rest will be up to her whether she keeps them at one a day or whether she reads them all at once. However, he still looks on the bright side saying that he hopes to be able to write messages to her kids too.

New series. It's 1969 and six months since the shootings in Durham Cathedral, and while Gently is almost back to full fitness, Bacchus has lost his confidence and tenders his resignation. Gently is determined to help his sergeant, so he gets him involved in one last case, the death in custody of a man arrested during a street protest – an investigation that leaves both detectives questioning what it means to be a police officer at a time when attitudes to the force are changing. Martin Shaw and Lee Ingleby star, with Lisa McGrillis, Steve Evets and Ruth Gemmell.

Jim Fenton Grandson Number Four piped up. "Gramps, are Flying Saucers sent by Sossewess?" He meant to say "Sorcerers" but has trouble rolling his r's. He's only aged 3 after all. We had been looking at one of the wonders of the modern world. A virginal stretch of asphalt, maybe 300 metres in length, prettily edged on one side with a white ribbon of everlasting paint. Just a road. What makes it unique is that parked on this pristine surface there is not a car, bus, bike or skateboard to be seen. But also there is no yellow line, no official "NO PARKING" notice. Just a

comes to admire this Black Beauty of a road before they too get towed away. Meanwhile, fired up by scenes of unrest from Kiev, Cairo and the Miners Strike, the residents have struck back with ... a Petition. Ladbrokes are not offering odds on its success. Long ago, the residents funded the construction of this road under threat of our homes being embargoed. Now, we wonder whether it is the site for a new tourist attraction, and whether we should all move to Bargoed in South Wales. Do you hear the people sing? That song from "My Fair Lady"?... "We can't park on the street where we live."

children who have to make a special trip to their rubbish bins at an entirely unsuitable time? Come on Mijas Council. Think again – and use a little common sense this time! Geoffrey Bennetts – Aged 73!! Editor says: Quite right too, it’s absolutely absurd, not to mention dangerous for older people who could easily trip over uneven pavements at night. And what about the vermin that will be

verbal warning that any parked vehicle will be taken to the Official Pound. From which it will need many a British pound to recover it. Which has already happened to my neighbour. Residents of Edificio Riosol at the side of this Via Dolorosa are a bit put out, having parked safely outside their homes for 30 years. Half of them are already shut out of the Edificio's own car park which is the size of Lilliput, (the country or the magazine, take your pick). They now face a tidy little jog, or slog of 100 metres down the hill where parking is tolerated ... until summer when the rest of Spain

Geoffrey Bennetts I very much enjoyed Sue Fisher Jones' article on the machinations of the Mijas Council in regard to their refuse collection policies. Indeed, I concur absolutely with everything she says. But I do find it somewhat strange that Sue failed to highlight the most absurd aspect of the 'Mijas madness' – namely that all 'organic' refuse has to be deposited in the containers between 9pm and 12pm at night! How can this, in any way, suit elderly residents or single parents with young

I also hear that a ridiculous number of apartments are expected to use a solitary bin so, even if they are used, they’re going to fill up so quickly as to be virtually useless. Mijas Council are so good at so many things, not least their excellent Foreigners Department, but this has to have a bit of a rethink before it causes environmental problems.

letters from myself, among others, on the subject of the TV Satellite dish. This is from The Wall Street Journal on the satellite situation. Also here is a link with similar info on it. Both say that the new satellite is fully operational and services will transfer during February.

SES'S ASTRA 2E SATELLITE GOES LIVE AT 28.2/28.5 DEGREES EAST OVER EMEA SES S.A. (NYSE Paris:SESG) (LuxX:SESG) announces that the ASTRA 2E satellite enters into commercial service in the orbital arc of 28.2/28.5 degrees East on February 1st, 2014. The satellite was launched on board an ILS Proton launch vehicle from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in

Kazakhstan on September 30th, 2013.

Extensive in-orbit tests have since then confirmed the satellite to be fully operational and performing to specifications.

ASTRA 2E has now been deployed at its final destination in the orbital arc of 28.2/28.5 degrees East, where it is copositioned with ASTRA 2A, ASTRA 2F and ASTRA 1N. Over the coming weeks, BSkyB, Channel4, ITV and BBC programming in this arc will be transitioned to the new satellite with its powerful footprint over the British Isles. The satellite was built for SES by Astrium of France. Based on the

Comment By Ken Campbell

A few tips on getting started Ken Campbell is on holiday this week, actually he’s here on the Costa and showing the children at a couple of schools how to enjoy the night sky.

S

N

o while he’s away, here are a few tips from the Costa del Sol Astronomy Society telling us just a bit about how to get started on this fascinating subject:

ight Sky and Practical Observing - Learning the Basics

Take it slowly, you will not be an astronomer over night, in fact we are all learning! Learn to star hop and recognise the constellations, but little by little you will learn. A very good way of learning is research what you are going to look at in your next observing session. So let’s say we are looking at Cassiopeia the (W or M) it moves round the pole star Polaris. Learn what stars make it up and what if any deep sky objects are near it etc … Do this for each of the constellations and in no time you will know your way round the night sky. That’s when your enjoyment will really take off! You will find your own field of astronomy you wish to explore – like the Moon, planets, deep sky objects, solar or even astrophotography – you will develop your own preferences over time. In the astronomy magazines each month there is a section of what is up and visible for observation.

T

he Moon: The Moon is a great and rewarding, easy-to-find target to start with. Download Virtual Moon – this is very useful. Another good website is alpoastronomy.org – this is for anyone of all

highly reliable Eurostar E3000 platform, the spacecraft carries 60 Kuband transponders, including 12 incremental transponders for delivery of services outside Europe, as well as 4 Ka-band transponders. ASTRA 2E enables the delivery of next generation broadcast and broadband services in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. ASTRA 2E, which had a launch mass of 6 tonnes, features a wingspan of 40m after its solar arrays have been deployed in orbit, and is designed to generate 13

levels with great write ups on the Moon and planets. You could even purchase a moon map. First thing is to purchase for yourself is a planisphere (for your latitude). This will enable you to locate stars and constellations, it is also a very good starting point and reference to remembering the star names. Buy a small beginners type book for outside workings.

T

elescopes and Binoculars: Many different types of scopes are available – prices and quality vary vastly. I would advise just starting with binoculars until you get the feel of things. Ask advice from other astronomers as to what to purchase for your first scope and your budget. Opinions will also vary as to what you should purchase. Binoculars are a very good starting point, although you will always use them for larger field of view objects. A good book is Philips Stargazing Binoculars.

R

ed Torch Lens

You will need a torch that has a dark red film on the front so your eyes stay dark adjusted. If you cannot buy a torch with a dark red lens you have a few options, paint layers of red nail varnish on the lens or put some red film on or round the end.

H

These few tips will start you on your way. appy Stargazing.

Editor says: Thanks for this Jack. I’m afraid to me it’s all a bit like reading a foreign language I don’t understand but I’m sure there are those who will understand it all. I have spoken to several satellite companies and they all say that although they’re pretty sure it will all go off,

no-one is positive yet what is going to happen. Still, we have yet another date of the channels going off next week so let’s wait and see. Maybe we’ll all get out and socialise a bit more!

Eric Boullier moves to McLaren F1 team A new racing director has been appointed at F1 team, McLaren, the former Lotus team principal Eric Boullier.

Shedden to drive in Bathurst 12 Hours

McLaren chairman Ron Dennis said the Frenchman's appointment was "an integral part of a senior management restructure within McLaren Racing". Ex-team principal Martin Whitmarsh, who has not been at work since Dennis regained control of the F1 team on the 16th January wasn't mentioned in the statement. Boullier, 40, said the role was "a privilege and a wonderful opportunity".

The Frenchman started work in F1 for Lotus in 2010, steering the team through a difficult four seasons during which cash flow was a constant problem. Boullier will run the McLaren team at the race tracks, charged with making sure they return to winning races and contend for world championships. Last year they had their worst season since 1980, failing to score a single podium finish.

2009 season, was given control of the F1 team again this month after successfully pulling off a boardroom coup. Until then, Dennis had no role in the F1 operation, but had several times tried to remove Whitmarsh as team principal over the last two years. It has been reported that Whitmarsh will be offered another role within the McLaren organisation. He is also one of four people who have been approached by Lotus to replace Boullier.

F1’s double points controversy

A McLaren statement described Boullier as "one of the most capable trackside leaders in F1".

McLaren driver Jenson Button said Boullier's "fresh ideas" would further revitalise the team. The team will never be changed by one individual, but he does add something," said the 2009 world champion. Former Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn has already been linked to a senior role at McLaren – Dennis admitted to BBC Sport last month that he had discussed the future with him. However, Brawn insisted last week in an interview with BBC Berkshire that he had not been "involved with any discussions with anyone", and was not planning to come back "at the moment". Dennis, who stepped down as McLaren team principal ahead of the

Bernie Ecclestone has claimed that the controversial double points rule has been introduced to help Ferrari compete. It was confirmed in December that the 2014 season would end with a race worth double in Abu Dhabi, but the move has proved unpopular and received criticism from fans and some team members. However, Christian Sylt writes in CityAM that Ecclestone told Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo the rule was introduced in to benefit his team. Speaking about di Montezemolo, Ecclestone said: “He was talking about it and I said: 'It is very simple why we got that [rule]. It is because

you aren't performing. If you were doing what you should be doing there wouldn't be any need for it.' He said: 'I know, I know.'”

Ferrari hasn't won a drivers' championship since Kimi Raikkonen in 2007, while Red Bull has dominated both championships throughout the last four seasons. Christian Horner is against the rule, but wants to see it tweaked if it is to stay.

“Two out of the last four years, it's gone to the last race under the previous points scoring system so it would probably be better to look at [awarding double points at] three races to take away an element of lottery over that last race," Horner said.

Former BTCC title winner Gordon Shedden is to take on a fresh challenge this weekend 7th-9th, when he takes part in the Bathurst 12 Hours for the first time.

The Honda driver will join the Motionsport team for the event, where he will partner Pete Storey and Ben Gower at the wheel of the team's Lotus Exige.

Rob Huff will also take part in the race for the Rotek Racing team that will enter the BTCC this season, while United Autosports will run its Audi R8 LMS in the event. “I'm excited to be joining Motionsport for my first visit to Bathurst,” Shedden was quoted by Racing.gt. “It's an iconic circuit, an iconic race and I think the Lotus Exige will be a strong contender for class honours.” The Exige came close to taking class honours last year before a late race incident forced the team into retirement.

The Bathurst 12 Hour (currently called the Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour) is an endurance race for GT and production cars held at the Mount Panorama Circuit, in Bathurst, Australia in February each year. The 2013 event ended the two-year run of poor entry numbers, with a record field of over 50 cars. This iconic race is a must see if you can manage to get a TV stream to watch it. The BBC used to show it regularly but haven’t done so for the past few years.

Free, live streaming of the Event via www.bathurst12hour. com.au "Web streaming from the start for the first nine hours plus the last thrilling three hours of racing to the finish, live on free-to-air TV – this is a win for all fans", said Bruce Morrison, Managing Director of MotorActive, the licensed distributors of Liqui-Moly in Australia.

Sunny finish to e Mijas Masters Miraflores Pairs Miraflores Bowls Club held it's annual drawn pairs competition in the last week in January amid very windy and chilly conditions, fortunately, the rain held off. When the draw was made there were many comments from the members about the strength of many of the resultant pairings. This led to an air of expectation of an exciting competition which was to be fulfilled.

The semi-finals saw Derek Carr & Carol Frost against John Carr & Marie Hurst, while the other semi-final had Pam Shemmings & Mike Kinane playing Denis Hanley & Grant Frost. This threw up some potentially interesting scenarios for the final. There would definitely be a Carr brother, there was a possibility of Grant & Carol meeting in the final and again a guarantee of a Shemmings/Frost family representation in the final. In the first semi, Derek & Carol got off to a goodstart, but John & Marie kept in touch and overtook them to run out winners. In the other

semi-final, Denis & Grant also got off to a good start but Pam & Mike fought back to win the match.

Finals day on Thursday was played in glorious weather and whilst some of the most experienced bowlers in the club were Finalists. Wayne’s Poker Tips In today’s online cash games, most poker sites offer three options for table size: heads-up (2 seats), full ring (9 or 10 seats), and 6max (6 seats). Over the last couple of years, the 6-max tables have become the most popular by a significant margin. There are a number of reasons for this: More hands per hour. As there are fewer players to make a preflop decision and usually less players to a flop, the game runs a lot quicker than when at a full table. While this may not improve winrate in terms of BB/100, it can make a big difference to your BB/hour winrate, purely because you’re playing more hands. More action. Similar to above, but not only are you playing more hands per hour, there’s more flexibility to play a larger percentage of preflop holdings. The beauty of 6-max is that there is no “correct” style. You can profit playing very tight and solid, or extremely loose and aggressive playing

every other hand (if you are extremely skilled post flop!) Nowhere for weak players to hide. In a full ring game, there may be one or two very weak players at the table that you would like to play as many pots as possible with. Even if they are directly on your right, most of the time you can’t raise to isolate with weaker holdings due to there being too many players left to act with position on you. This isn’t usually the case in 6max, and allows for many more profitable situations for strong players. Rapid improvement in skill level. You will generally be playing more post flop poker and contesting more pots than you would in full ring. This should allow you to gain experience at a much faster rate, and therefore improve quicker. I used to play full ring almost exclusively, but one

day I thought I’d try out 6max for the reasons above. After a few fundamental adjustments to my play (and 10 buyins down later), I found myself winning in a more profitable and quite frankly, more entertaining game. If you are a full-ring player who has always wondered about 6-max but you’re afraid of either “getting blinded away” or “playing too many marginal spots”, then this article is for you. There will be more on this topic over the next couple of weeks.

What a difference a week makes, regarding the weather that is! The CDS Triples were played in brilliant sunshine throughout and yet, on the first two days of the Mijas Masters, just a few days later, play had to be cancelled because of overnight rain causing standing water on the green. So, instead of being played from Saturday 18th to Sunday 26th January it started on Monday 20th and ran over to Monday 27th. The Pairs final between Gordon and Margaret Kain and Garry Aldridge and Mo Huddleston was an excellent match which, according to Margaret was played in the right spirit and could quite easily have gone either way. However, it was Gordon and Margaret who became the winners. The Triples final was between Alan Turner, Sue Walker and Alan Plimmer and John Sullivan, John Fenton and Geraldine Robinson (the three are pictured bottom right) this time the latter three made a good start and were in control of the match from the beginning. Alan Turner's three conceded after 16 ends with the score

at 24/7. Before the prize giving a buffet prepared by Carol Wright and Carol Jacobs was served and enjoyed by players, spectators and helpers. This gave time for Samantha Pairs winners Gordon & Margaret Kain Austen, a representative from BMI, Club days are normally held the sponsors of the on Tuesday and Thursday tournament, to leave her afternoons at 1.30pm for office duties to present the 2.00pm and on Sunday mornings at 10.00am for trophies. Andy Murray seals GB Davis Cup win

Great Britain are into the Davis Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1986 after Andy Murray secured the winning point against the USA. Murray beat Sam Querrey 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (3-7) 6-1 6-3 to give Britain an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five tie in San Diego. It is the first time Britain have beaten the USA since 1935. They will travel to Italy in April for the quarter-final, which will almost certainly be played on clay. "This is a massive team effort," GB captain Leon Smith told BBC Sport.

Derby day delight for Malaga Malaga 3 : 2 Sevilla

Malaga were looking to pick up three vital points to keep them above the relegation places, and it was Andalucian rivals Sevilla who travelled to La Rosaleda, with a thousand of their fans making it a cauldron-like atmosphere.

The match kicked off with a high level of intensity expected from a derby game but neither side created any clear cut chances. As the game went on Malaga grew in confidence and after 19 minutes Antunes hit a shot which rattled the post. Reyes then came close for Sevilla a few minutes later but Caballero prevented the threat. On 29 minutes the deadlock was broken,

Duda was bought down in the box by Sevilla´s Coke and it was the longserving Malaga player who stepped up to convert the resulting penalty.

Malaga went into the break 1-0 up after an impressive first half. Sevilla manager Uni Emery must have given his players a stern half-time talk as they came out for the restart all guns blazing, and just four minutes into the half Bacca found the back of the net for the equaliser. Malaga struggled to regain their first half

form and after 62 minutes Moreno came close to a second but narrowly missed the target. Three minutes later though Sevilla were ahead, Fazio took advantage of a setpiece heading the ball into the net leaving Caballero with no chance. Malaga knew they had to give everything if they were to get anything from the match. Schuster made two changes bringing on El Hamdaoui and Pablo Perez. The home side began to take the reins again and a

good move by new signing Amrabat found Duda on the left, but, his shot hit the post, however Samu took control and struck a powerful shot into the back of Beto´s goal to bring Malaga level with 10 minutes left on the clock.

The fantastic atmosphere in the stadium spurred the team on and Antunes had a shot which was deflected by Beto, and Pablo Perez also had a shot which

failed to hit the back of the net. The hero of the night though was Duda (pictured) who curled the ball past Beto with seven minutes to go, and La Rosaleda went wild. The final minutes of the game were somewhat heated resulting in Malaga´s manager Berndt Schuster being sent off, but it didn't matter as Malaga ended the night with the three points. Joe Kinnear resigns...

... as Newcastle's director of football after less than eight months in the role. The 67-year-old, who was above manager Alan Pardew in the club's management structure, claimed to be overseeing player recruitment. However, the Magpies failed to sign anyone on a permanent deal during his second spell on Tyneside. After Saturday's loss to Sunderland, Pardew made it clear he was unhappy at the club's lack of transfer activity. "If I was in charge, solely, of transfers, things might be different but I'm not," he said.

Ian Thorpe: Olympic swim legend in rehab Five-time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe is being treated for depression after being found by Australian police behaving oddly near a car in Sydney. "The owner of the car basically called the police and the police came," said the swimmer's manager, James Erskine. "They realised it was Ian Thorpe. They realised he was disoriented." "He is in rehab for depression," Erskine added in an interview with the Australian Associated Press. "He hadn't had a drink. He had zero alcohol in him."
