Princess decides not to fight summons

After Princess Cristina made known her decision not to appeal against the summons to appear before Judge José Castro, he brought forward the date to February 8th. Castro had initially summoned her to appear before him on March 8th.

The judge is investigating her possible involvement in tax fraud, money-laundering and the misappropriation of public funds in connection with the not-for-profit Nóos institute set up by her husband Iñaki Urdangarin and his former business partner Diego Torres.

The infanta’s lawyer, Miquel Roca, said on Monday that Princess Cristina wanted to testify as soon as possible because “she believes that she has to do so to clear up a situation in which she is absolutely convinced of her innocence.” Roca said it was the Princess herself who decided not to appeal against the subpoena. Her decision was welcomed by the Royal Household which said in a statement last Saturday that it was “very positive”. The Princess's lawyer had

said a few days earlier that they would appeal the judge’s decision to make her a formal target in the investigation, as he had tried to do for the first time in April 2013. But last Friday Miquel Roca announced in writing that she wanted to renounce this right and would testify voluntarily on March 8th. The royal family had expressed a desire to put

an end to “the suffering” caused by the case, which has been dragging on for three years, since the judge started investing the dubious business practices of her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, a former Olympic handball player who married the Princess in 1997.

Hero

By now, pretty much all of you will have heard about Dangerous Ellis and his shenanigans but, on Saturday, I had a situation where he became the hero of the day. I was going along the road between Coin and Alhaurin Golf when one of my front tyres just exploded. I managed to limp the car to the BP garage and found that what was left of the tyre was in shreds and smoking like a chimney - and that was only about 100 yards away. I know how to change a wheel but only had a short wheel brace so, even with me jumping up and down on it like some lunatic I had no chance of shifting the wheel nuts. I had already got the spare tyre out of the boot and checked the air pressure but, could I get the flippin’ shredded wheel off? Could I heck! Also, I had an appointment with one of our advertisers on the coast in an hour that I couldn’t miss. What to do? I could phone the grua and wait ages for them and feel like a right “girlie” because I couldn’t do it myself, my husband was on the golf course so no chance there, so I phoned Dangerous and pleaded for help. “No problem,” he said, “be there in ten minutes.” And within ten minutes, there he was with a proper macho socket set complete with torque wrench to release the wheel and, in no time at all I was mobile again. So, thanks Dangerous for being the hero of the day! I shall be visiting one of the car shops in the near future with a view to purchasing a copy of the aforementioned wrench so I’ll be able to do it myself next time! On Thursday I met up with an old friend and some lovely new people who grew up in the East End of London. Boy, had they lived a rich life and were full of fascinating stories about what life was like there years ago. I could have spent hours with them! I remember all the old markets in the area and all the atmosphere, good and bad, that was enjoyed by all of us. What memories!

Health minister's Uturn on co-payments Health Minister Ana Mato has abandoned a plan to introduce copayment for certain public services with a lower priority, according to ministry sources. These services include nonemergency ambulance transportation, prosthetic equipment such as wheelchairs or crutches and medical nutrition therapy products. The sources said the decision was taken in December, before the State Council released a report questioning the savings to be obtained from making people pay a fee for these services. The plan had originally been to charge patients

Abortion law reaches European Parliament The European Parliament will debate proposed changes to Spain's abortion law on Thursday, with the Social Democrats, Green and left-wing parties joining forces to reject the changes the government is planning.

Hannes Swoboda, Social Democrats spokesman in the EU parliament, told reporters on Monday that his party opposes the reform, which restricts a woman's right

to the procedure unless there is a danger to the mother's health or in cases of rape.

The debate over the government's planned changes to the 2010 legislation took off last week when Mikael Gustafsson, chairman of the Women's Committee, sent a letter to all parliament members expressing "great concern" over the proposed law.

Princess decides not to fight summons He and his former business partner, Diego Torres, are suspected of embezzling €5.8 million obtained through no-bid contracts with the governments of Valencia and the Balearics. They had been hired to organise sports and tourism events – some of which did not take place, although paid for – through their nonprofit Nóos Institute, but channelled much of the money to private firms and tax havens, the investigation claims.

Judge Castro believes that Princess Cristina benefited from that money through her use of funds from Aizoon, a company she owns jointly with her husband and whose sole

activity seems to be as a depository of Nóos money. In their arguments to the examining judge, the Princess's lawyers said that any alleged tax evasion by Aizoon is wholly attributable to Urdangarin. They argue that there is no reason to believe that Cristina de Borbón was aware that her husband “may have been involved in any kind of fiscal irregularity suggesting that the company funds that she occasionally used had their origin in criminal activity.” The scandal has been extensively covered by the international media, with The Economist talking about the “Royal Mess” in

Obama praises Rajoy for 'great leadership' US President Barack Obama told Mariano Rajoy during his first visit to the White House, that he had come to power "at a very difficult time", but that "thanks to your great leadership," Spain has made important advances in economic stability, deficit reduction and the country’s performance in financial markets.

Obama applauded the "not the most popular, but necessary" reforms introduced by the Spanish government. However, the US president said "great challenges remain" with regard to economic growth and job creation, which he described as the two most pressing issues right now.

One thing that could contribute in that regard might be the free trade treaty that the European Union and the United States are going to negotiate, the president said.

Monday’s meeting came nearly two years after Obama invited Rajoy to visit Washington, although the two men have met at several

international conferences.

Rajoy arrived in Washington on Sunday with a delegation that included Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Gonzalo de Benito, Secretary of State for Communications Carmen Martinez Castro, Cabinet chief Jorge Moragas and Economic Affairs Office director Alvaro Nadal. His

first official event was the placing of a wreath on Monday at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

From the White House, Rajoy went to the International Monetary Fund for a meeting with Managing Director Christine Lagarde. He ended the day with an event at the residence of

Anti-boulevard protesters dig in

Gordo winner regrets generosity Vicente de la Fuente should be a happy man, having won third prize in the El Gordo Christmas lottery, which gave him a cool five million euros.

Around 200 people gathered early on both Monday and Tuesday mornings in the Burgos neighbourhood of Gamonal to prevent machine operators from resuming a construction project that has deeply divided the city. The protest against the conversion of Calle de Vitoria into a boulevard with a bicycle lane and an underground parking started late last week. Around 40 people were arrested on Friday and Saturday after some protesters burned rubbish containers, broke bank

windows and damaged street furniture. Police released 26 of those arrested on Saturday. On Sunday evening, around 1,000 people gathered in front of the newspaper Diario de Burgos, yelling: “They've sold out; they're not really reporting on what's going on here!” One local resident told reporters "It's all very aesthetic, very nice, but it's useless to us,” adding that the working class district has been hard hit by unemployment, and people needed more social

services, not more street beautification.

The protesters vow they are not going to budge and are organising shifts of 100 people so that the construction site is never deserted at any time.

The State Secretary for Security, Francisco Martínez Vázquez, said in a radio interview that the incidents in Gamonal are the work of “violent groups that travel to different parts of Spain to infiltrate neighbourhood movements, generating enormous social damage”.

But in a fit of Christmas spirit, the entrepreneur, who organises nearly all the local fiestas in southern Cantabria, northern Burgos and parts of Asturias, gave out small shares of the number he had bought to the mayors of more than 300 villages for whom he works.

He thought they would give the prize money – €12,500 – to their councils but now some of them are asking: who should keep the money, the mayors themselves or the municipalities they represent? Julio Espinosa, mayor of Ruerrero, said it would all go to his village of 50 people. The amount is three times as much as the council spends on fiestas in an entire year, but Espinosa plans to spend some of the money on things other than

Ex premier's Getting the son accused hams right of bribery Anticorruption prosecutors have asked the Catalan regional High Court to officially name Oriol Pujol Ferrusola – the son of former Catalan regional premier Jordi Pujol, who governed from 1980 to 2003 – as a suspect in an alleged crime of bribery.

The Barcelona public prosecutor issued a statement on Monday to say that these potential charges are separate from those Pujol is already facing in the so-called ITV affair, in which he has been officially named as a suspect for allegedly taking €30,000 from a group of businessmen to help them win a public contract to manage the

House sales plunge The National Statistics Institute (INE) announced on Tuesday that home sales plunged in November of last year to their second-lowest level since the crisis began at the beginning of 2008.

The INE said housing transactions that month shrank by 15.7 per cent to 21,847, a figure only above that of April 2012. Minister Miguel Arias shows the tags to Soraya Saenz de Santamaria

The Cabinet has approved a new colour-coded system for the country's different types of ham products.

Introducing the new classification to the press, Agriculture, Food and Environment Minister Miguel Arias Cañete said it would include a trade description of the product

and the breed of pig it comes from.

Products from the prized pure Iberian pigs fed exclusively on acorns will be labelled black, and red when only partially Iberian. Ham from grazing pigs will be tagged green and fodder-fed animals white.

The INE said demand is being affected by a jobless rate of just under 26 per cent and by falling wages as companies strive to restore their competitiveness and make exports cheaper and more attractive. Home sales fell in all of the country’s regions, with the exception of the Canary Islands, where

they rose by 13.5 per cent from a year earlier and Navarre, where there was an increase of nearly 10 per cent.

Home sales also increased spectacularly in the North African exclaves of Ceuta, where they doubled, and Melilla, where they increased 59.1 per cent. The biggest falls in home sales were experienced by La Rioja (66.6 per cent), Cantabria (55.0 per cent), Asturias (37.1 per cent) and Galicia (30.2 per cent).

ETA sympathisers defy march ban

madrid

The victims' association AVT had applied in vain to have the march banned, saying it gave "grave offence to each and every victim of terrorism". "The only aim of the initiative is

to pay homage to prisoners of the terrorist group ETA," it argued. Radical left-wingers have demanded for years that ETA prisoners should be transferred closer to home but last Saturday members of the moderate Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) joined the march. However, Basque premier Iñigo Urkullu and other PNV members of the Basque regional government, were all conspicuously absent from the demonstration.

Late last year, the High Court ordered the release from prison of several ETA members, acting on a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights that Spain had acted illegally when it retroactively applied legislation that stopped

them being eligible for early release. Most of the released prisoners had been convicted of multiple murders. A spokesman for the

At least 100,000 people marched through Bilbao on Saturday after a rally in support of jailed ETA terrorists, which was to have taken place the same day, was banned. Despite being called a march for "human rights, understanding and peace", some demonstrators shouted slogans in support of the Basque terrorist group. The march was organised by Basque nationalist and separatist political parties after a judge banned a rally calling for ETA inmates to be moved closer to their families. One marcher, 52year-old Itziar Goienetxia, told reporters she lived in the Basque country and had to travel 1,200 km to visit her husband in jail in Cadiz, at the other end of the country.

Economy minister Luis de Guindos announced on monday in Parliament that the recovery of the economy was strengthened in the fourth quarter of 2013, when GdP grew 0.3 per cent compared with the previous quarter. it was two points higher than the figure for the second quarter, when the country finally managed to pull out of the longest recession of the democratic era. de Guindos said the country is now “faced with a recovery, albeit fragile, but one that is, after all, a recovery”. among the positive factors he mentioned, de Guindos focused in particular on the fall in borrowing costs for the Spanish state and the accompanying drop in the risk premium, which all point to foreign investors' increasing confidence in Spain. The minister said the housing market was beginning to touch bottom, and that unemployment fell in 2013. He predicted that the unemployment rate will fall from 25.9 per cent, its current level, to 25 per cent by the end of 2014.

Orange has no exclusive right to colour

The Supreme Court ruled on monday that France Telecom does not have the exclusive right to use the square orange icon of its mobile phone brand Orange. France Telecom had patented its brand’s icon in Spain but rival mobile firm Jazztel, which also uses the colour orange in its logo, filed a suit against the French firm’s claim to exclusivity. The court ruled that the colour orange that Orange “claims as a distinctive exclusive sign of its products is nothing other than one of the most common in the market,” and therefore, “should be open to the use of all economic operators.” it said it was “in the general interest” not to restrict the availability of colours to other operators offering the same products or service. Jazztel and Orange’s legal battle dates back to 2009 and the Supreme Court only reached its judgment in december of last year. Jazztel’s lawyers had argued that in Orange’s case: “The colour orange is represented in the most trivial, insignificant, banal, simple, rudimentary, primary, basic, elemental shape imaginable to the human intellect: that of a simple two-dimensional square, without contours, borders, texture relief, perspective, without any ornamentation.”

World News Thai protesters shut down Bangkok

Thai protesters marched on several government buildings on Tuesday, the second day of what they call a shutdown of the capital, Bangkok.

Demonstrators surrounded the Customs Department and key road junctions remained blocked. The protesters allege that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is controlled by her brother, ousted former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, and say money politics have created a flawed democracy.

Thailand's election commission has called for the vote to be postponed to

May, but this is unlikely to satisfy the protesters, who want the Shinawatra family to be purged from politics, and a two-year period without elections in which an appointed committee would reform Thailand's political system. They say they will remain on the streets until their demands are met.

Ms Yingluck has called a snap election on February 2nd but the opposition

intends to boycott the polls. The shutdown has been peaceful so far and shops and businesses have remained open in unaffected areas.

The government has deployed 8,000 soldiers and 10,000 police to keep order. The military – which has carried out several coups in the past – has refused to rule out another one. Some fear an escalation of violence could lead to a

military intervention. The government has so far worked to avoid confrontation with the protesters.

The political unrest is the worst to hit Thailand since the protests of 2010, which were against a government led by the current opposition party and left more than 90 people, mostly civilian protesters, dead.

Inventor 'feared he was to blame' The inventor of the Kalashnikov assault rifle wrote to the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, in 2012, expressing fears that he was morally responsible for the people it killed.

Mikhail Kalashnikov, who died last month aged 94, said he was suffering

"spiritual pain" over the many deaths it caused. "If my rifle claimed people's lives, then can it be that I, a Christian and an Orthodox believer, was to blame for their deaths?" he asked. "The longer I live, the more I wonder why the Lord allowed man to have

the devilish desires of envy, greed and aggression".

The Kalashnikov, or AK-47, is one of the world's most familiar and widely used weapons. Its comparative simplicity made it cheap to manufacture, as well as reliable and easy to

maintain. It is thought that more than 100 million Kalashnikov rifles have been sold worldwide.

Kalashnikov formerly refused to accept responsibility for the many people killed by his weapon, blaming the policies of other countries that acquired it.

Earthquake anniversary marked

The people of Haiti have been remembering the victims of a devastating earthquake that struck the country four years ago, killing more than 250,000 people and leaving at least 1.5 million people homeless, in a country with a population of about 10 million. Four years after the quake, some 150,000 people are still living in temporary accommodation and signs of destruction are still everywhere. On Sunday, people attended special religious ceremonies across the country and President Michel Martelly laid a wreath at a mass grave in Saint Christophe, where many victims were buried. The government issued a decree declaring 12th January a day of remembrance and reflection. Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, has struggled to rebuild its infrastructure, despite millions of dollars in aid pouring into the country. President Martelly said a year ago that only a third of the money pledged after the 2010 earthquake had actually been delivered. Since the earthquake, Haiti the has been affected by landslides and hurricanes, as well as an epidemic of cholera and rampant crime.

Black rhino hunt permit auctioned

A permit to hunt and kill an endangered Black Rhino in namibia has been sold at a US auction for $350,000 (£212,000). The dallas Safari Club in Texas said the winning bidder – who has not been named – will hunt an old, non-breeding male rhino. Such animals actually pose a threat to younger rhinos, which they sometimes charge and kill. All proceeds will be donated to the namibian government and will be earmarked for conservation efforts, safari club officials said. Animal rights groups described the hunt's conservation claim as "perverse" and "a sad joke". More than 80,000 people signed online petitions against the auction. The FBI says it is investigating a string of death threats over the auction. namibia is home to about a third of the world's 5,000 black rhinos, and issues just three hunting permits a year. It is the first time a permit has been auctioned outside the southern African nation.

Cockroach removed from man's ear

An Australian man has received medical treatment to remove a large cockroach that had burrowed into his ear. Local media reported that the 2cm pest caused agonising pain for Hendrik Helmer, and defied his efforts to suck it out with a vacuum cleaner. He was taken to hospital where a doctor tried putting oil down the ear canal but that only made the cockroach crawl in deeper, before it eventually began to die. It was then that the doctor was able to put forceps into his ear and pull out the cockroach. Mr Helmer told reporters: "They said they had never pulled an insect this large out of someone's ear." Mr Helmer said he was not suffering any major discomfort and would not be taking any additional precautions before going to sleep. But he added that his friends were strongly advising him to go to bed with headphones on.

Doctor jailed for selling babies

A Chinese obstetrician has been given a suspended death sentence for stealing newborn babies and selling them to child traffickers. Zhang Shuxia was found guilty of abducting and selling seven babies to child traffickers between November 2011 and July 2013, including a pair of twins, a judgement posted on the Weinan Intermediate People's Court's microblog on Tuesday said.

Six of the babies were rescued, but one baby girl died. She told parents their infants had serious diseases and convinced them to give up the babies, the court said.

Zhang and several other suspects were arrested after the most recent abduction

case in July. The parents reported the case to police after they suspected their baby had been trafficked.

The baby was found and returned to his parents in early August. Police said they were still investigating 50 related cases, including 26 cases linked to Zhang, and several other suspects were in criminal detention, Xinhua news agency reported. Zhang has been sentenced to death, with a two year reprieve. Suspended death sentences are normally commuted to life imprisonment in China.

The military wants a strong "Yes" vote to endorse Mr Morsi's removal. His Muslim Brotherhood, now designated a terrorist group, boycotted the vote. Shortly before voting

began, an explosion was heard near a court building in Cairo, although no casualties were reported. A huge security operation is being mounted for the two days of voting.

The interior ministry said 200,000 police officers, 150 central security units and 200 combat groups were deployed around polling stations.

Brazil police suspected of killing spree A group of policemen are under investigation in Brazil to find out whether they went on a three-hour killing spree in an alleged revenge attack.

Twelve people were killed overnight by gunmen in vehicles in a district of Campinas, a city north of Sao Paulo. The attacks began hours after an off-duty policeman died

in a robbery. Investigators told reporters that a revenge attack by fellow military policemen is regarded as "the strongest theory".

The calibre of weapons used in the attacks is the same as that used by military police, and several of those who died had criminal records, local media reported.

Investigators believe it is significant that the attacks "happened in a sequence, in the same area of the city and in the space of a few hours," a local police commander said, adding that other possibilities are being considered, including "an extrajudicial execution or even a conflict between rival criminal gangs".

Three “stars” go on trial this week The trial of actor William Roache, 81, more commonly known as Coronation Street’s Ken Barlow started on Tuesday at Preston Crown Court. Mr Justice Holroyde QC told jurors that it was important to distinguish between the character the actor has played on TV for more than 50 years and the “real person” during the trial in which he stands accused of two counts of raping a 15-yearold girl in east Lancashire in 1967 plus five other charges of indecent assault on four girls aged between 12 and 16 years old between 1965 and 1971 allegedly in Manchester. He said: "You may feel in one sense you know the defendant, Mr Roache. He is well known as an actor who for many years has played the part of Ken Barlow in Coronation Street. But of course this is not the fictional character of Ken Barlow in court. It is a real person, William Roache, who is on trial. You must separate the fictional character from the real person, you will have to decide verdicts from the evidence you will hear from a real person, about a real person."

Mr Roache arrived at the court with sons James and Linus and flanked by a security guard after which he formally surrendered to bail and entered the dock at the start of the hearing which is expected to take up to four weeks. He denies the charges against him. Among the witnesses for the defence to be called during the trial are Coronation Street actors Anne Kirkbride, Chris Gascoigne and Helen Worth, jurors were told. The trio play the characters Deirdre Barlow, Peter Barlow and Gail McIntyre. The trial continues. Also in court this week accused of a series of 13 assaults that were “sexual in nature”between 1976 and 2003 and one in 2008 on 11 women, one of whom was 15-years-old at the time, was former Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis, 68, who was described as an "opportunist" who preyed on "vulnerable" young women, at Southwark Crown Court in London. The women complainants were said by prosecutor Miranda Moore QC to come from all parts of the UK and the assaults are said to have been carried

out “in a work environment” both over and under their clothing. The alleged assaults were said to have taken place while the DJ, real name David Patrick Griffin, was working in radio, acting in pantomimes and even at the opening of a hospital radio station. He denies the charges, describing them as “utter rubbish” and told police that he would not have jeopardised his career in panto. One of the incidents was allegedly filmed during a recording of Top Of The Pops but was deleted from the programme that was aired. according to Ms. Moore. Another victim told of being assaulted while working on the pantomime Aladdin where Travis was appearing as Abanazar, the “evil wizard”, between November 1990 and January 1991. The theatre later decided to ban females from being on their own in the presence of Travis, Ms Moore told the court. Travis is charged with 13 counts of indecent assault dating between 1976 and 2003, and one count of sexual assault in 2008. He was arrested under Scotland Yard's Operation Yewtree, which was prompted by abuse allegations involving the late Jimmy Savile, the court heard. Last, but not least, saw Rolfe Harris in Southwark Crown Court on 12 counts of indecent assault on four

girls between 1968 and 1986. Harris, 83, has yet to be arraigned on four counts of making an indecent image of a child. He will stand trial on the indecent assault charges on April 30th, and made no comment to reporters as he left the courtroom. Harris who has lived in the village of Bray, Berkshire, for the past 50 years, was released on conditional bail. He was born in Perth, Western Australia but moved to the UK in 1952. The conditions of his release until trial are that he does not contact prosecution witnesses, lives at his home address, and does not spend time with anyone under 18 without being accompanied by someone over 21. He arrived at court pushing his wife, Alwen, in a wheelchair.

How safe is my company pension? Part 1: written by Andrea Speed, Speed Financial Solutions, Tel 951 318 529

Forgive me for reminiscing, but I remember the days when if you were a member of a company pension scheme you were set for life, particularly if it was a defined benefit scheme, even more so if you worked for the local authority and a member of the superannuation scheme, be it a teachers scheme, local government scheme, fire service etc. Back then I worked for the Prudential, which had a non-contributory defined benefit staff pension scheme set up on a 1/60th basis. FANTASTIC! I was made redundant in 1999, so what may have happened to my deferred benefits since?

Let’s consider: FUNDING LEVELS... This is the amount in the pot available to keep promises to employees and ex-employees when reaching retirement and want to take company pension benefits. When calculating these figures, it is necessary for the Trustees to make certain assumptions about future events. This means that the amount actually needed to provide the benefits – which include those benefits currently granted on a discretionary basis, such as any increase to pensions in payment – could turn out to be quite different from the figures quoted by the company. Considering this in more detail, most company pension schemes are heavily reliant on ‘new money’ going into the pot – in other words, those who are still working and contributing to the scheme are to a degree funding the income paid to those who are retiring. Many schemes’ funding levels have deteriorated over recent years, for a combination of reasons, e.g. poor investment performance (some schemes have still not recovered from stock market falls of 2008), the lack of new contributions going in (due to the closure of the scheme to new employees), mortality rates (retired people are

living longer and so there is a bigger drain on the ‘pot’ from which pension income is paid).

SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO MY PENSION? What many people don’t realise is that they cannot rely on what is quoted in their pension scheme booklet as being the up-todate situation of their deferred pension benefits. For example: 1. At any point prior to retirement, the Trustees can vary the terms of your pension. So the accrual rate can be increased (which means that your pension income is reduced), the retirement date can be changed (so you may have to wait longer to start drawing your pension income), the spouses’ benefits can be amended (so your spouse may not receive the 50% income you expected in the event of your death), etc. 2. At any point post retirement, the Trustees can also vary the terms of any annual increases in payment. So you are not necessarily guaranteed increases each year in your pension income once you start drawing it. (Over time, this will impact on the buying power of your pension income due to the effects of inflation). Unfortunately, there are now a number of pension schemes that are in a situation of being underfunded. See the following chart: Aggregate funding position of defined benefit occupational pension schemes in the PPF 7800 index, February 2005 to February 2013 – United

Aggregate funding position equals total assets minus total liabilities.. 4. The ‘7800 index’ covers the 6,316 defined benefit occupational pension schemes potentially eligible for entry to the PPF (at February 2013). The number of schemes in the index has declined over time. 5. Changes made to actuarial assumptions from 31st March 2008 produced a one-off decrease in liabilities of £40.1 billion. 6. Changes made to actuarial assumptions from 31st October 2009 produced a one-off decrease in liabilities of £71.6 billion. 7. Changes made to actuarial assumptions from 1st April 2011 produced a one-off decrease in liabilities of £30.6 billion. The other main components of pension fund expenditure are lump sums payable on retirement, death benefits, transfers to other pension schemes (outward transfers), and administrative costs. Expenditure on lump sums fluctuated around £3 billion from the mid-1990s until 2004, but then rose rapidly, reaching a peak of £8.5 billion in 2010. It then fell back to £7.7 billion in 2012. (part 2 next week)

Inadequate hospital staffing levels blamed for toddler’s death The mother of four-yearold Sean Turner told an inquest that her son was reduced to sucking the moisture from wet tissues as hospital staff failed to help him “due to inadequate staffing levels, poor hygiene standards and lack of training”.

Yolanda Turner said that the “beginning of the end” for her child came when he was moved from the paediatric Intensive Care Unit to Ward 32 as a high dependency patient at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and that the alleged failings in his treatment and care left him with “no chance of survival”. The little boy, described as a “happy, lively little boy” had gone into hospital for vital corrective heart surgery in January 2012 but died from a brain haemmorhage shortly after suffering a cardiac arrest in the arms of his father, Stephen Turner. He said: "The nurses on Ward 32 cared but did not have the knowledge or know-how to give Sean the level of care he so desperately needed. No parent should be put in this situation, in a safe environment – having to beg for help. We have to live with this for the rest of our lives."

Fighting back tears, Yolanda Turner recalled how her pleas for pain relief for her young son, who was in "considerable pain", were ignored, adding: "I cannot understand how a child could be left to suffer so long." At least 10 families, including the Turners, allege their children have either died or were left damaged following treatment on Ward 32 since 2008 and are taking legal action against the University Bristol Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UH Bristol). In November last year, Avon Coroner Maria Voisin returned a narrative verdict in the case of another one of the

10 children – seven-yearold Luke Jenkins – who died three weeks after Sean on Ward 32.

Luke's parents, from St Mellons, Cardiff, believed the hospital could have done more to save their son's life, but the coroner found "no evidence that a gross failure led to or contributed to his death".

Two further inquests are due in February and March 2014. Robert Woolley, chief executive of UH Bristol, said in a statement: "We

would like to offer our sincere condolences to Mr and Mrs Turner for the loss of their son, Sean. We always aim to do our best for the children and families under our care and we are fully committed to working with the coroner to help her investigate the reasons for Sean's death. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further until the inquest has concluded." The inquest into Sean's death is expected to last two weeks.

Local News Pets get funeral parlour People who need to dispose of a pet's body usually contact their local vet or the council's disposal service but people living in Cordoba have another alternative – the San Francisco de Asis funeral parlour in Calle Alfonso XIII, the first one in Spain for pets.

Owner Juan Carlos Gisbert decided to establish the service after he had to have a pet dog put to sleep and felt the service provided by vets and the local council "was not dignified enough".

However, he ran into what he called a legal vacuum because there were no pet funeral parlours in Spain so he went to Germany,

Belgium and Holland which were pioneers in this service. The price of the cremation plus urn can cost as much as €130, depending on the size of the dog. He also offers made-to-measure coffins

at a special meeting last Friday, Marbella councillors unanimously decided to drop the plan approved last November that would have allowed the construction of a number of skyscrapers. Mayor angeles Muñoz had already said the plan would not go ahead if a majority of townspeople opposed it. even the Duchess of alba waded in and begged the mayor not to destroy the town's skyline. representatives of the platform "No to Skyscrapers" attended the meeting and gave the councillors a standing ovation when they reached their decision.

The dogs should have a valid health certificate issued by a vet, and cannot sit on the seats. Only five dogs will be allowed on a bus at any one time. If the bus is crowded, the driver can stop people with dogs from boarding. all dogs except guide dogs must pay half the normal ticket price. The measure will take effect before the end of this month.

Past disaster overshadows Doñana anniversary

Recent celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Doñana National Park - created by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 1963 - were overshadowed by the Junta de Andalucia's plan to reopen the Los Frailes mine, near Aznalcóllar in Sevilla, which was the cause of one of Spain's biggest environmental disasters in April 1998. A holding dam burst at the mine, releasing some five million cubic metres of acidic mine tailings. The toxic sludge entered the Guadiamar river, the main source of water for the Doñana National Park, one of Europe’s biggest wetlands. The effects were devastating. Soil in the surrounding area was heavily contaminated with deadly substances including arsenic, while 37 tons of dead fish were recovered from the river. The poison entered the food chain and tests on wildlife in the region found many species had sub-lethal quantities of heavy metals in liver and muscle tissue. It took three years to clean up the spillage, at a cost of around €240 million. Now the Junta wants to reopen the

mine because the region needs economic growth. But for WWF officials, it would be a "terrible mistake" if proper safeguards are not put in place.

The park was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site by the United Nations in 1994, which should have safeguarded Doñana from future environmental threats. Since then, the park has become a final stronghold for the endangered Iberian lynx and is home to several endangered species such as the Spanish imperial eagle, It is also an important stop-off for thousands of migratory birds travelling between Europe and Africa.

But the WWF and other conservation groups

associated with the park are fighting an ongoing battle on several fronts. Besides the mine, Doñana is also at risk from plans for underground gas storage and the dredging of the nearby Guadalquivir river. However, the biggest threat of all is the use of illegal boreholes to irrigate the strawberry cultivation around the perimeter of the park. The farmers are accused of draining water from the park’s underground aquifers, which are crucial for maintaining the park’s ecosystem and the vast number of species which live within it. The problem is so serious that last year Unesco threatened to remove Doñana from its list of world heritage sites if the Spanish government fails to address the issue.

“The World Heritage Centre and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) remain concerned about the cumulative impacts of a number of threats to the outstanding universal value of the property, in particular the issue of overextraction of the Doñana aquifer,” read a Unesco statement. “If these issues are not addressed the property could meet the conditions for inscription

on the List of World Heritage in Danger in the near future.”

Spain must submit a

report to the UN by February 1st, outlining the steps it is taking to regulate water usage for agriculture.

Sheep to the wolves

I

should imagine no-one will believe that the Infanta Cristina finally realised that the harm her husband is inflicting on the monarchy will only start coming to an end if she stops appealing against Judge José Castro's summons. Apparently she spent a night at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid last week and was persuaded to go to court without further ado. King Juan Carlos is no fool and he knows a few sheep must be thrown to the wolves if the monarchy is to survive. Unfortunately one of those sheep is his youngest daughter. I should imagine the king would dearly love to throw his son-inlaw to a real pack of wolves – and a considerable number of people would be only too happy to help him.

T

he princess's lawyer apparently intends to base his defence on the fact that she's completely besotted with her husband, as anyone with eyes can see, and didn't know the first thing about his businesses. However, I find it hard to believe that a well-educated, modern working woman didn't know what her husband was up to. He's not just a Johnny-come-lately, although his career as a professional handball player with FC Barcelona might lead some people to think he was a working-class boy who made good. His full surname name is Urdangarín y Liebaert –- his father is a Basque with some minor nobility in his family tree and his mother is a Flemish Belgian. He didn't allow his career in sports to stop him from studying for a master's degree in business administration.

I

think Judge Castro intends to put Urdangarín behind bars and the sooner his wife stops delaying the inevitable the better. As for the princess, I think the judge will be satisfied if he can get her into court of her own free will and make her look like a silly woman blinded by love. It remains to be seen if her marriage can survive what must be a harrowing experience for her and her four children.

H

owever, if the case drags on too long, it could end in the king's abdication. He's never been a man to take the coward's way out. He fooled Franco for many years, lulling the dictator into thinking he would carry on the regime when all the time he intended to turn Spain into a parliamentary democracy. Franco's spies apparently kept an eye on him, but Juan Carlos allegedly smuggled a variety of pro-democracy, anti-Franco people to meetings at his residence in the boots of cars. And if

www.thenewsonline.es

the only way to save the monarchy is to abdicate, he will.

T

For Henry

he murder of a former Venezuelan beauty and popular soap opera star and her British husband in Venezuela last week by a gang of thieves caused an uproar. Most of the reports in the local and international press focused on Monica Spear, with husband Thomas Henry Berry getting a passing mention.

H

owever, he called himself Henry – his father is called Tom – when I used to babysit him in Caracas. The Berrys lived in the same building as me and my Venezuelan partner. They used to look after my cat when we went away for a weekend, and I was able to return the favour after we broke up by babysitting Henry and his little sister Katie so that Tom and wife Carol could get away for an evening.

A

t the time I was active in the Caracas Playhouse amateur dramatics group and I always played the baddie in the Christmas Pantomime. One Christmas, I was Fleshcreep, the giant's evil henchman, in Jack and the Beanstalk. I loved the part – it allowed me to be seriously evil and I loved the way the kids screamed with joy when Dame Trot finally killed me off. I'd lie there on the floor, trying not to laugh, and Henry was the only kid who noticed that. He came to me after the performance to accuse me of laughing "when you were supposed to be dead". I told him "Henry, it's only make believe". He was about nine at the time.

T

he last time I saw Henry a couple of years before I left Venezuela, he was in a wheelchair recovering from a gunshot wound in the abdomen. His best friend had been killed when thieves tried to steal the car they were travelling in. Henry left the country for a while, but went back because he still loved the place he'd known as home since he was two years old, when his father started to teach mathematics at one of Venezuela's best universities. I can understand that – Venezuela is a very beautiful country but the murder rate is shocking. I suspect if I'd stayed there, I would have met the same fate as Henry. RIP Henry, you didn't deserve to have your life ended so brutally.

Martin Delfín

What was not said in Washington Writes for the English language version of

M

ariano Rajoy has finally got one of his most desired wishes. Until a few months ago, Monday’s visit to the White House was just a dream but it was carefully orchestrated from Madrid to coincide with good news being offered by his economy minister, Luis de Guindos, that the Spanish economy grew 0.3 per cent at the end of the fourth quarter of 2013. The accolades coming from President Obama put Rajoy in seventh heaven. The US leader praised the Spanish prime minister’s “sound” leadership for “stabilising the economy, moving into growth, reducing the deficit and being able to return to the financial markets”. Nevertheless, he said that Spain still has a long way to go in grappling with its economy and still needed further action to curtail the country’s unprecedented high unemployment – caveats that Rajoy perhaps would rather have not heard.

T

his was the first visit to the White House since the Partido Popular (PP) leader came to office in 2011. Rajoy, who had been adamant in calling for early elections throughout his years as opposition leader during the past administration of Socialist predecessor José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, was just as determined to get invited to the Oval Office during this term. And it came on the day – coincidentally, mind you – that De Guindos gave Congress the positive growth figures.

Y

et the prime minister wasn’t about to upset the waters especially after all the kudos he received from the American president. He didn’t take a firm stance – like his German and French counterparts – in rejecting spying activities by the United States on Spanish officials, as revealed by wanted former US intelligence contractor Edward J. Snowden. Instead he told reporters that he was satisfied with the explanations US officials gave him but didn’t go into detail. No doubt the Socialists and the United Left (IU) coalition will be pressing the prime minister for a full disclosure in the coming days, if they intend to assume their responsibilities as the opposition. Nothing was said – at least publicly – about the Spanish High Court’s concerns that the United States is not complying with its bilateral treaties in helping in the ongoing but stalled investigation into the death of José Couso, the Telecinco news cameraman who was killed in Baghdad when US forces attacked the hotel where he and other journalists were staying nearly 11 years ago. Judge Santiago Pedraz issued a writ addressed to Justice

Ministry’s international section earlier this month complaining that the United States has refused to cooperate in the case, and has even “failed to notify” the three former US officers who are being held accountable by the High Court for Couso’s murder.

B

esides a brief question about the Catalan independence drive by a reporter – an issue on which Obama remained silent –- there was no mention of the ongoing corruption and criminal investigations into members of Rajoy’s PP party. The two leaders did acknowledge that they discussed security issues in North Africa and relations with Latin America.

O

bama did thank the Spanish government, however, for allowing US forces to beef up their facilities at Rota Naval Base in Cádiz, where the United States, along with other NATO allies, are establishing a European anti-missile defence shield. This agreement was actually hammered out by Zapatero in his final diplomatic fait accompli shortly before leaving office, but Rajoy no doubt underhandedly walked away taking all of the credit. Yet it is fair to say that as opposition leader, Rajoy did agree with Zapatero on the signing of this memo of understanding between the US and Spanish defence officials that took place only weeks before the 2011 general elections.

T

here were also other items on the discussion agenda, including Obama’s push for a transAtlantic trade pact that he claims will boost employment on both continents. “We both agreed that there is enormous potential for increasing trade and growth between two of the largest economic actors in the world, but it will require intensive work and serious compromise on all sides, and the prime minister and I agreed that it's well worth the effort," the US president said.

L

ater in the day, Rajoy received a warm welcome by IMF director Christine Lagarde who also gave the Spanish leader credit for turning around the economy. But the biggest accomplishment from this Washington visit has been Rajoy’s own personal satisfaction. He walked away from the White House smiling like a big Cheshire cat, without any clear indications of what all this backslapping means for the Spanish people.

A trip to London is never quite long enough

Steeped in history and with more shops to wander round than you could ever want, here’s a few more things to do in the Capital, plus a bit of history. Taking a trip to the capital of the UK seems to almost be over before you start.

There are literally thousands of hostels, bed and breakfasts, and hotels from the fairly cheap to the absolute epitome of luxury to stay in with almost as many websites selling their beds but, shop around and you’ll very often pick up a last minute bargain. If you fancy a particular hotel it may be worth phoning them direct to see if they’ll drop their “rack” rate. As they say in the trade: “It’s better to have bodies in beds than empty rooms.”

Once you’re settled and you know the lie of the land as far as transport from where you are is concerned, now’s the time to browse through all those leaflets you picked up at the airport and in your hotel’s reception. Last week we took you to Greenwich. This week we’ll just touch on a few more places that are well worth seeing but not very well publicised.

Museums

If you’re on a family trip there's Pollocks Toy Museum. Opened in 1956 it is dedicated to the British toy theatre which was very popular at the turn of the century. Named after Benjamin Pollock who was a famous printer of toy theatre backdrops, it's at 1 Scala Street, London W1 and is now run by his grandson. Nearby is Covent Garden that has lots of artisan stalls in the old market plus street jugglers, dancers, musicians and all manner of things going on. The area is a warren of small shops and cafes.

Then there's the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green and the Cartoon Museum in Little Russell Street in Bloomsbury (not strictly childhood but interesting fir children nevertheless). Brook Street London has the Handel Museum dedicated to the German

composer who became a British citizen in 1927. He lived in the house for nearly three decades and it's preserved in the style of the times. One place that, so far I haven’t visited myself but would love to, is The Bell Foundry at 32/34 Whitechapel Road, London E1 1DY where Big Ben, the bell that’s in the tower at the Palace of Westminster was made, as well as the Liberty Bell that is now on permanent display in Philadelphia USA. The company was established in 1570 (during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I) and has been in continuous business since. Whitechapel Bell Foundry's business has always been, and still is, the manufacture of bells and their fittings. The manufacture of large bells for change ringing peals in church towers, single tolling bells, carrillon bells, and a complete range of accessories such as framework, wheels, clappers and their assembly in Church towers accounts for approximately four-fifths of the company output. The other fifth of the business lies in the manufacture of handbells for tune and change ringing, and other small bells. Its long history spans the reigns of twentyseven English monarchs. During the war years, the Foundry switched to manufacturing castings for the Ministry of War. In the aftermath, it was very busy replacing peals lost to bombing raids and fires, including the bells of St. Mary le Bow (within the sound of which all cockneys must be born) and St. Clement Danes of 'Oranges and Lemons' nursery rhyme fame. You can take tours on a Saturday at 10am, 1.15 and 4pm. These have to be booked well in advance, I phoned them last Thursday to check details and they are already booked through until June so, if you want to go later

in the year... book now on 0044 207 247 2599!

London’s past

London’s importance was probably first established by the Romans in around AD 43 when it was known as Londinium. By the Tower of London there remains a section of the wall that was built by Roman hands. Stand beside the church of All Hallows and look towards the Tower of London and there, in a single glance, you can see two thousand years of history, an experience that can be repeated again and again all over the city. Deep within the church you will find an arch, part of its original construction that dates back to Saxon times. In the Tower itself, Queen Elizabeth I was held prisoner by her older sister and from there she would have been able to hear the bells peeling from the steeple of All Hallows. It was this very same steeple that diarist Samuel Pepys climbed to observe and record the Great Fire of London in 1666 that wiped out a great part of the city that was then mainly constructed of wood.

Great Plague

A year ealier, in 1665, he had made note of several houses in Drury Lane having red crosses on them and the words “Lord have mercy upon us”. These were the houses that had become infected by the Great Plague, the terrible epidemic of bubonic plague that was to eventually wipe out at least 70,000 lives before the disease had run its course. Many believe that the Great Fire was to thank in large part for the end of the plague. The standard treatment for the plague, from which very few recovered, was a concoction of the herbs sage, rue, buttercupo root, angelica root, snake root and saffron infused in,

oddly enough, Malaga wine! At the time it remained unknown what had first caused the disease but, two centuries later it was found that fleas from the rats that swarmed over the slums outside London’s walls in St. Giles, Cripplegate, Whitechapel, Stepney and Lambeth were to blame. A vast majority of its victims were the poor who lived in extremely close proximity to their neighbours and, at that time in London’s history it was quite common for each dwelling to house more than one family. The rich, on the other hand were largely able to isolate themselves from the rest of the population so suffered far less severely. The dead were put in the streets for the burial carts to collect and a man with a bell shouting “Unclean, unclean” would walk before the cart to warn people not to come near. In many churchyards in London you can still find burial pits. After sending his wife off to the country “for her own safety” Mr. Pepys in her absence took full advantage of the situation by having numerous affairs and on December 31st 1665 he wrote: “I have never lived so merrily as I have done the plague time!” Despite living throughout the time in London, he survived to tell the tale.

Great Fire

In the early hours of Sunday, September 1st 1666 a fire broke out in a baker’s shop in Pudding

Lane, near to London Bridge. To start with it was thought to be only a small fire and even when it spread to straw in the courtyard of the nearby Star Inn, nobody really took any notice. However, the summer had been hot and dry that year and as many of the buildings and bridges were of timber construction coated in pitch it was to turn into a fire of mass destruction.

Nearby warehouses by the river were crammed with goods including tallow, oil and spirits and wood and coal was stocked on the wharves. The fire easily leapt the narrow alleyways and, on a rising wind, by the time the primitive fire engines arrived on the scene, the fire was totally unstoppable burning down the Royal Exchange, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Guildhall. To stop the fire City authorities had to take drastic measure and it was decided that seamen should be brought in to use gunpowder to blow up whole rows and streets of buildings to create a fire break. Once the wind dropped, the fire was brought under control but in the five days it raged, it had completely destroyed 373 acres of the city of London including 89 churches, 44 craft and guild halls and over 13,000 houses, with almost a quarter of a million people made homeless. Amazingly, there were no known deaths! After the fire Londoners rebuilt their city, but this time used bricks and stone. It was a unique

opportunity for the great architect Sir Christopher Wren who produced plans for a new city with wide boulevards and fine houses and churches. However, because of the urgent need to rebuild, most of his plans were not adopted and the old street patterns were retained. Wren was, however, still responsible for many fine new buildings including, of course, the new St. Paul’s Cathedral. Most inhabitants moved out of the city and the central Square Mile of the city became the financial and business district known today as “The City”. All Hallows still bears the scars of the Blitz of the Second World War when the church took an almost direct hit. However, the bells still ring out every Sunday and people are still baptized within its walls.

To all points of the compass beyond this spot lies Greater London with its modern shops, offices and homes, plus the homes of Kings and Queens of the past and the present time. So, there’s a few bits and pieces for you about London and, if you have anything interesting in the area you come from that you think our readers might like to visit, please send me the details to editorial@thenewsonline.es or by snail mail to Buzon 300, Spanbox, CC La Trocha, Coin 29100, Malaga and we’ll let them know. written by Kym Wickham

Community News Above and beyond by volunteers make all the difference to pensioners at Christmastime Age care would like to thank volunteers for going above and beyond what was expected of them.

On Christmas Day Kathy and Paul Long invited 14 Age Care pensioners, most in their 80’s, to their lovely home in Acapulco, Fuengirola for a traditional Christmas Dinner. Kathy and Paul have lived in Spain for several years running a successful business here before retiring. Now they are Age Care volunteers, recently becoming deputies to Bridget Southin, Welfare Leader for the Fuengirola centre which meets at the Manilla Bar, Paseo Maritimo, Los Boliches every Thursday: 10.30 – 12.30 pm.

Kathy said “We found that many older people were going to spend Christmas alone and we decided, with a bit of help from Age Care, we’d do something about it!” That ‘something’ was a sixcourse Christmas dinner and a gift from Santa. Kathy and Paul made everyone feel so welcome and special, and most guests stayed all day. Next year, they are planning to raise extra funds so they can have a bigger venue and can cater for more. Paul said “We forget that there are also many couples, maybe one of whom is housebound and can’t visit their family or friends over Christmas. They get very depressed. Age Care wants to reach out to them as well!”

Age Care’s President, David Mantle, said “Age Care cannot exist without volunteers, and we are so lucky to have volunteers of this calibre. Kathy and Paul have been so proactive in Fuengirola. Well done.”

Age Care’s support of the ever-increasing older English-speaking community on the Costa del Sol is vital. Although not an emergency service, Age Care provides welfare information and practical support. Volunteers visit people in hospitals, care homes and private homes and for many a visit by a volunteer from Age Care is the highlight of their week.

Age Care is doing as much as it can to improve

the lifestyles of vulnerable older people on the Costa del Sol. Anyone who needs help, or anyone who would like to help, should contact the Age Care Advice Centre on Tel: 952 933 409. Alternatively, pop into one of the coffee mornings: Benalmadena Costa – La Iglesia Bar, nr Bonanza Square, Mondays: 11-1 pm; Calahonda – El Zoco Café, Supersol, El Zoco, Tuesdays: 11 -1 pm or Fuengirola – Manilla Bar, Paseo Maritimo, Los Boliches, Thursdays: 10.30 -12.30 pm. For more information on the work of Age Care, please go to our website www.agecarecosta.org, email info@agecarecosta.org or you can follow us on facebook.

Saving money is on everyone's mind these days, since cash is so tight, which is why the Ark Christian Fellowship in Las Rampas, Fuengirola have a thrift shop offering a wide variety of low cost clothing, shoes and 'interesting' items that have been donated. As the shop is staffed by volunteers (and more are always welcome, just see Jenny!) all proceeds go towards the assistance that the Ark offers anyone who needs help, and as currently there are over ninety (non member) families needing food assistance, all income is welcomed. Most people’s idea of a thrift shop is one of old clothes discarded and in bad condition, however that is totally inaccurate. Most of the clothes donated are almost new and often expensive brands (believe it or not I picked up a Georgio Armani top coat for next to nothing in excellent condition just before Christmas), so it's always worth visiting when you need to restock on

anything from work clothes to high fashion, before you spend your money in other places! All clothes on sale have been quality checked and steam cleaned, so rest assured they are in good condition. Now the exciting bit!

The Ark Thrift Shop is holding a ONE Euro Sale starting on Tuesday 21st January. Which means that EVERYTHING will be on sale for ONE EURO on that day, and for as long as we can. Our mission is to raise cash to help people in need, so come and help others whilst picking up a top quality bargain at the same time. We have a coffee shop right next door to the thrift shop, with coffee at 1€ a cup, and homemade cakes (which are totally delicious) at the same price, so bring a friend and relax whilst picking up a bargain. written by John Harper

This shop sells good quality clothing, bedding, shoes, bric-a-brac etc – all donated by the people of Estepona and the surrounding area. The shop is popular with local people and they sell thousands of items each year. To maintain the quality and standard they are known for more donations are urgently needed, so please search your wardrobes and cupboards and storage areas to see if there is anything you are prepared to donate. Items can be dropped off at the shop during opening hours or collection can be arranged if you call the shop on 608 587 538. Unfortunately they cannot sell electrical goods or furniture. But they are happy to accept unwanted Christmas presents! The Age Concern charity shop is in Calle Zaragoza, Estepona and opens from 10.00 to 13.30 Monday to Saturday inclusive.

Lights, gunpowder, monuments, flowers, traditional costumes, music, satire, emotions and a great deal of fun are the ingredients of a unique cocktail known as the Fallas Fiestas. In the middle of the Mediterranean coast, Valencia city celebrates the final days of the winter and the arrival of spring each year with spectacular fires and pyrotechnics. Every March Valencia is given over to a carnival of bonfires, street parties, fireworks and a healthy dose of satire known as Las Fallas – the fires. Displayed on every corner all over the city are colourful ninots, giant papier-mâché figures often 20 feet tall or more that have been paraded through the streets and then placed in fantasy groups to tower over excited spectators. Each one in some way satirises a political figure, a soap star, or more exotic creatures from the movies, TV, sports idols, or simply imagination. Some of them are grotesque – others playful and charming – all are larger than life and up for public scrutiny. An important event is the Ofrenda de Flores a la Virgen de los Desamparados, a beautiful ceremony every year, that

honours Valencia's patron Virgin. Thousands of Falleras and Falleros arrive in the city from every corner of the Comunitat (Valencia State) and take to the streets wearing traditional costumes and dancing to their neighbourhood or village bands as they wend their way to the Plaza de la Virgen to offer bouquets to the giant image of the Virgin. Nowadays, celebrations draw to an end with a fabulous firework display in the Paseo de la Alameda, called the Nit del Foc (literally "The Night of Fire"). All Fallas effigies burn all over the city on the “Crema” night (including the winner of the competition) in a tremendous spectacle of fire and joy. Valencia is at that moment like Nero's Rome, a city in flames. That's why Valencians call this the best firework fiesta in the world! Don´t miss it! Join the organised trip by coach to Fallas 2014 from Sunday March 16th to Thursday March 20th staying in the 4 star Hotel Ray Don Jaime on a bed and breakfast basis for only €375 per person by calling Jo or Derek on 696 430 160 for more information.

The day starts at 10.00 with the long route (RUTA LARGA) of some 9 kilometres, designed for those who are physically fit and used to walking longer distances in varied terrain. Then at 11.00 there is a second guided walk of 4.5 kilometres (RUTA CORTA) aimed at families with children and the less energetic. Both routes will be led by guides who know the area well and can give participants interesting information about the village and the countryside. If you want to take part in either of these walks you need to sign up with the Ayuntamiento – on the internet at www.guaro.es, or in the Guaro Tourist Office from January 13th

until January 25th. You will then receive an official receipt which has to be stamped in the Tourist Office half an hour before your chosen walk starts. Please note that to take part in one of the organised walks on January 26th you need to sign up beforehand – last day is Saturday January 25th. At around 14.00 the walkers and visitors can taste the local speciality – sopa de almendros (almond soup) in the Plaza Al-Andalus. The olive oil museum will also be hosting an almond exhibition.

As in previous years, there will be a photographic competition

where visitors can submit photographs – of almonds, of course – and the first prize winning picture will be used to publicise the 2015 Dia del Almendro. The competition is open until February 15th and entries should be submitted to the tourist office (turismo@guaro.es).

If you can't get to the actual almond day there are plans to run walking tours for groups from January 20th until February 2nd – contact the Tourist Office.

Picasso art gallery puts Mijas on cultural map The charming ‘white pueblo’ of Mijas – one of the region’s top tourist attractions – is always on the list of places to visit as ex-pats seek to lay on entertainment for their holidaying visitors. Now the town is famous for more than just its gaily decorated donkeys. It is home to an important cultural landmark, honouring the works of Pablo Picasso, born in Malaga and, some would say, the most famous artist in the world. CAC Mijas, the Centre for Contemporary Art, opened its doors at the end of November and is found in one of the town’s ancient palatial houses, carefully restored to retain some of its original features which complement the contemporary re-styling of the space. The centre showcases works by Picasso and his famous friends and contemporaries, including Salvador Dali, Georges Braque and Tsuguharu Fujita and more than 400 original masterpieces featuring ceramics,

lithographs and paintings have been made available from the private collection of the Fundación Remedios Medina. During his lifetime Picasso created around 800 ceramic sculptures and 130 are available in Mijas, making it the second largest collection in the world after the Picasso Museum in Paris. Visitors are welcomed by the sight of a life-size Pablo Picasso peering from a window above overlooking the street – the window has been specially created for the museum using a photograph of the artist. During the restoration work Roman remains were discovered in the courtyard and these have now been carefully cleaned and protected by a perspex cover. A café serving drinks and tapas has been opened on the roof terrace, and the museum, located in calle Malaga in the very heart of the town, is open daily from 10am until 6pm, entry 3 euros. Visit www.cacmijas.org to find out more.

The Wolf of Wall STreeT Directed by Martin Scorsese Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughy

The true story of Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) – a New York Stock broker who became a symbol of the excesses of Wall Street in the 90s, was indicted on money laundering and other charges and turned in his friends and work colleagues to the FBI in a plea deal – is a rich mix of meaty material into which Scorsese sinks his directorial teeth with gusto.

He has directed a deeply black comedic ode to gluttony and greed, with eye-popping excesses, including lots of nudity and DiCaprio scooped the Golden Globe this week for best actor in a musical or comedy. There are wildly comic moments, Jonah Hill provides a spot-on comedy foil as the hapless sidekick, and the movie cracks along – which is just as well, because at

three hours long, it could test the patience of any audience. But the story of how Belfort makes millions, and embraces a life of drugs, sex and living high on the hog has had a lot of critics rating it as one of Scorsese’s best, and in DiCaprio’s fifth collaboration with the director, he delivers possibly his best performance.

DiCaprio plays the role with brio and his breezy, sleazy, easy-going charm keeps the audience on side so it will be interesting to see how he fares in the Oscar nominations tomorrow (Thursday). The movie is based on Belfort’s own memoirs and it’s a smart, funny exposé of Wall Street excesses.

Eva is a single mother who is dreading the impending departure of her daughter for college and the empty nest syndrome that will inevitably accompany this milestone. She enjoys her job as a masseuse but fears the loneliness that is likely to come when she no longer has her daughter to talk to. She decides that the time has come to

She becomes friends with one of her clients, a poet by the name of Marianne, and meets a man named Albert who is kind and gentle and is also a divorcee with a child leaving home. Though

Strangely, you may be feeling unusually serious at the moment, there is much that you wish to put into place and you will be using this week to make plans concrete. The more you know, the clearer you will soon be on how to direct your life this year. Be very careful with your words and actions as this is not the point to make impulsive decisions but to pay attention to the details and consult with loved ones, especially on the home and career front. Right now it is all about getting your foundations operating as you want them. But be crystal clear on what you need whilst formulating a game plan to make sure you get it what you want. There is one relationship in your life that you can count on where you feel a solid sense of security and this will also become an area you wish to strengthen.

Your feelings could be sky high this week full of emotion and inner smoldering passions. This can have the effect of your becoming impatient and trying to force things into happening too quickly. Be patient for now but remain positive, it is just that the time is not quite right yet. Financially it also requires you to exercise some tolerance, give it a week or so and things will work out your way. Moderation is your key to good living and it will become critical that you become clear about what you need to put in place in order for you to maintain balance in your life. You will be surprised at how others come forward to support your intentions. Contracts could be up for negotiation and advancements in the world of work could be up for discussion. There is an air of progression about you. This week is all about you; it is about creating habits that help you instead of hinder. When you are looking after your needs properly and have a natural creative outlet then you are able to be extremely productive with your life. It is not about depending on another to feel good; it is about finding what makes you come alive from within and sticking with it.

You have been slightly overwhelmed lately but the truth is you would not trust another to do the job as well as you can do it. At least you know it will be done right or to your standards and the detail will not be forgotten. By the weekend you can ease up a little on the workload and give time to affairs of the heart and as you do so a warm security starts to flood over you – very cosy. Life does not seem under your control right now – it is as if someone else is holding the reins and steering your destiny. This influence is now encouraging you to start to think of your own needs, to rely upon yourself more, instead of putting the needs of others before yourself. You will do much for love but do not give so much that you lose yourself in it all.

Getting your goals moving and motivating yourself to write, teach or to go places you have always wanted to visit is highlighted now. There is nothing in the way to stop you from achieving what you want – only you. Make the most of every day and this can be a time of remarkable achievements and success. You have finally been given a green light so that you can move forward with relative ease.

Financially there is a need perhaps to cut back and slow down on your outgoings. Tightening your belt and sticking to it could be the theme that is playing on your mind. By the weekend though there could be significant financial gains in the most unexpected ways. You will find that talents and abilities rise up to show themselves from within and these will be put to even greater use this year. Whatever you put your energy into right now the universe is likely to give back to you tenfold. There are those around you that are looking out for you and there will be a sign that this is the case this week. New beginnings are all around you so keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities. Keep your feet rooted to the ground and you will remain aware of all that is going on around you.

There could be something going on behind the scenes and perhaps there is someone who is working hard to help you, pulling strings on your behalf. The bigger picture is your focal point and this will help you to remain steady and certain and on track. The clouds of the past are beginning to clear and as they do a new brilliant, glorious horizon comes into focus.

A change to support the direction that you wish to go in is likely and it will feel liberating to have made a decision. Important life choices that will radically affect your life for the foreseeable future are on the table. Each choice will lead you in a very different direction, but each choice is equally as good as the other, so it comes down to what you want the most.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

The creamy filling and cheese topping makes this the ideal comfort food. This recipe is a mouthwatering leftover idea to make from a roast chicken with herb stuffing.

Leftover baked chicken and chorizo Ingredients:

• 15ml (1tbsp) olive oil • 1 onion, thinly sliced • 130g (4 1/2oz) chestnut mushrooms, sliced • 1 large clove garlic, finely chopped • 200g (7oz) leftover roast chicken, torn into pieces • 80g (3oz) leftover stuffing (or 50g (2oz) chorizo) • 200ml (7fl oz) chicken stock

(Serves 2)

• 45ml (3tbsp) half fat crème fraîche • 100g (3 1/2oz) baby spinach • 4 ready-made pancakes or plain tortillas • 25g (1oz) Gruyere cheese, grated

Directions Preheat the oven to gas 7, 220°C, fan 200°C. Heat the oil in a large sauté pan. Add the onion and soften over a low heat for 3 minutes. Stir in the mushrooms and continue to cook for 3 minutes until golden, then add the garlic and fry for a further minute. Add the shredded leftover chicken and stuffing, then pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Simmer for 3 minutes. Now add the spinach, using tongs to help it wilt into the sauce, and 1 tbsp of crème fraiche. Check the seasoning and remove from the heat. Divide the warm filling between the pancakes (or tortillas) and roll. Then place the rolled pancakes side-by-side in an ovenproof dish. Spread half a tbsp of crème fraîche

along the length of each pancake, finally scattering the cheese over all of them. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until they are piping hot and the cheese has turned golden brown. Please note that 200g (7oz) of chicken and 80g (3oz) of stuffing is included in the ingredients list, but, as this is a leftover recipe, you will need to add the products if making this recipe from scratch Nutritional Value Calories 496 25% Sugar 6.4g 7% Fat 20.1g 29% Saturates 7.2g 36% Salt 1.8g 30%

The word too in English has two meanings and, as one might expect, these two meanings are translated by two different words in Spanish. También means too, as in also.

Me gusta el café - I like coffee. Yo también - Me too. Me parece un poco caro - I think it's a bit expensive. Yo también - Me too. Me encanta vivir en España - I love living in Spain. Yo también - Me too.

¡Qué te diviertas! Have fun! Tú también - You too. Estás invitado - you are invited. Y tu mujer también - And your wife too. Yo, también, iré a la fiesta - I, too, will go to the party Ellos, también, cantarán - They, too, will sing

Demasiado means too, as in excessively or too much. Just take it one syllable at a time - de-ma-si-a-do. Fácil. ¿no? El coche va demasiado rápido - The car goes too fast. Tu falda es demasiado corto - Your skirt is too short Tu fumas demasiado - You smoke too much Ella bebe demasiado - She drinks too much Compraste demasiado - You bought too much Well - Bueno Basta ya. - Enough already. Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Calvin,

My hair is very oily, any solutions to this? May, Fuengirola Dear May,

Oily hair is often confused with an oily scalp. Using a purifying shampoo is recommended, and avoid any products that say they add shine and gloss as these will only add more oil to your scalp. An oily hair quick fix is to dab a bit of talcum powder on the roots of your hair, or try a dry shampoo. When shampooing, have your water as cool as you can stand it as hot water

stimulates the oil. Dear Sue,

I have just invested in some high end range products from you and forgot to ask how long it will take to see a difference? Hazel, Mijas Dear Hazel,

Nothing works instantly, especially in skincare, beauty and healthcare. You need to give the products and their active ingredients enough time to interact with you skin. Don't give up after a week –it takes the skin around a month to renew itself and for you to see the

results of high end skincare products, remember – real results take real time! Dear Calvin,

My hair gets very tangled, what can I do about it? Karen, Estepona Dear Karen,

The key to preventing tangles is to reduce the amount of chemicals (dyes, relaxers, perms) that you put in your hair, and always use a good conditioner. Also make sure your hair is tangle free before you wash it.

Avoid brushing out tangles. Use a wide tooth comb or your fingers and apply a leave-in conditioner to help. Start by gently picking out the tangles at the ends first, and gradually make your way up to the root area.

Be patient, if you rush it, it can often result in making it worse.

Dear Sue, Should I include face masks in my skincare routine? Joan, Alhaurin de la Torre Dear Joan,

Apart from the additional skincare benefits you get from applying a mask, it gives you a chance to take time to focus on you. You can use different types of masks to pamper and condition skin. Clay masks draw out impurities, while hydrating masks with essential oils add moisture to parched skin. You can also tone and firm slack skin with anti-ageing, plumping masks. Treat yourself once a week (or twice using a different mask) at home – your skin will love it!

Caffeine could boost memory We may one day rely on caffeine to boost memory as well as to wake up, researchers at Johns Hopkins University have concluded after testing the memories of 160 people over 24 hours. They found those who took caffeine tablets, rather than dummy pills, fared better on the memory tests, but warned people to remember caffeine could cause negative effects, such as jitteriness and anxiety.

Twenty-four hours may not sound like a long time, but it is in terms of memory studies. Most "forgetting" happens in the first few hours after learning something. Only a few previous studies have been carried out into caffeine's effect on longterm memory and have generally found little effect. This study was different because people took the

caffeine after, rather than before they had seen and attempted to memorise the images.

The researchers said their findings do not mean people should rush out and drink lots of coffee, eat lots of chocolate, or take lots of caffeine pills. "Everything in moderation. Our study suggests that 200mg of coffee is beneficial to those who do not regularly ingest caffeine," they said. "But we also found an inverted U-shape dose response suggesting that higher doses may not be as beneficial."

Brits bashed at Golden Globes last weekend … all eyes are now looking forward to overall glory at the Oscars in March It has been 33 years since actor and screenwriter Colin Welland famously declared ‘The British are coming..!’ during his Oscar winner’s speech and since then the Brits have enjoyed highs and lows. The Golden Globe awards on Sunday proved to be a disappointment – with 18 Brit nominations, including high profile folk of the calibre of Dame Judi Dench, Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Chiwetal Ejiofor and Idris Elba, there was just one triumph.

It was an important one – British director Steve McQueen’s critically acclaimed and searing movie ‘12 Years A Slave’ did take the award for best drama. So

First Lady hits 50 After nearly five years as America’s First Lady, Michelle Obama hits the “big 50” on Friday and says she’s feeling “50 and fabulous” adding that she’s never been more selfconfident “more clear of who I am as a woman”. She started celebrating last weekend with a trip with the girls to Hawaii, a present from the President and on Saturday there’ll be a big bash at the Whitehouse. Like all first ladies, Mrs. Obama's every move and fashion choices have been closely watched – and mercilessly critiqued. She gets wide credit for carefully shielding daughters Malia and Sasha, now 15 and 12, from the spotlight and for displaying a strong sense of style. But there have been missteps, too, like

wearing $500 sneakers to a food bank, taking a pricey vacation to Spain during the economic downturn and being photographed wearing shorts aboard Air Force One. However, it has recently been announced that the dress she wore for her husband’s second inauguration is to go on display at the Smithsonian Museum. Always a help to the President, Mrs Obama has helped raise millions of dollars for him and other Democratic candidates and has drawn thousands to campaign rallies. Mrs. Obama planted a vegetable garden on a patch of the South Lawn, the first one there in decades. She used its bounty of sweet potatoes, tomatoes and other crops to begin a national debate

Further to my letter about the illegal hunter on the La Carreta area and how worried all of us that live there are about possible accidents involving animals and children, I am afraid I have to write again this week to inform you that, lying on the public footpath that runs alongside the Rio Pereilla, is a very large Mastin dog that has been shot, the cartridge case lying next to it. Whether this was a

Details have to be worked out throroughly yet but we are getting together with one of our advertisers to try and find our Local Heroes. Even in this economic climate there are still lots of people on the Costa del Sol who put their time, and sometimes their money as well, into helping friends, neighbours and sometimes even total strangers. We want you to write in and tell us about those people who very often go quietly about making huge differences to people’s lives, often not even getting a simple “Thank You” for their efforts. It is all too easy to sit around moaning about our lot and, let’s face it, there’s plenty who do but there is much more to be made from life by making a little bit of effort and I can guarantee that, if you help someone out in some way, you will feel much better about the world.

You will read in my column this week about my car tyre blowing to smithereens last weekend. Normally a very capable woman, I found I was a damsel in distress as I couldn’t change the wheel where they’d put the nuts on with an airgun. One call to my neighbour, the famous Dangerous Ellis and he was there within ten minutes, changed the tyre in 20 and I was back on the road in 30 minutes all told so, he was my hero of last weekend. I could have been stranded for hours and it’s little things like that that make the world a better and much pleasanter place. I will let you all know the details of the competition as it comes along and let’s give all our heroes a boost. Oh, yes, there’ll be a prize for the winner and if any businesses out there would like to donate more prizes, please let me know. All our heroes deserve a medal!

e Crab Nebula F

In January 1054, the Chinese record seeing a very bright star appear that was visible for a few days even during the day time. or centuries the mystery of the super-star remained, and it was not until 1731, over 100 years after the invention of the telescope, that English astronomer John Bevis happened to spot a small fuzzy cloud exactly where the Chinese had reported their star. But even though the ‘smoking gun’ had been found, telescopes had not developed well enough to say for certain what had caused it. n 1758 a French astronomer named Charles Messier independently rediscovered the ‘fuzzy blob’. Messier however was very interested in ‘fuzzy blobs’. He was a dedicated comet hunter and when a comet is far away from the Sun, before the tail has had a chance to develop it looks very much like a ‘fuzzy blob’. At the time, Messier was busy hunting for the return of Halley’s Comet that had been predicted to return that year. e was infuriated at having to check on every ‘fuzzy blob’ that he discovered time and time again wasting valuable telescope time so he decided to accurately catalogue every one of them that he found, thus eliminating them from his comet hunting. The first object he catalogued was the mysterious Chinese ‘fuzzy blob’. He named it M1. In all, Messier catalogued 110 objects and his catalogue was so accurate that astronomers still refer to it even today. n 1844 another astronomer observed the M1 ‘fuzzy blob’ this time using a much more powerful 36” telescope. What the Earl of Rosse saw and subsequently drew at his observatory very much resembled a crab and so the Crab Nebula was christened. But even then no one could give a reasonable explanation as to what it was and what had caused the Chinese to report such a strange sight back in 1054. t was not until 1921 when photographic techniques had developed sufficiently, several photographs taken years apart were compared and it was found that the Crab Nebula was actually expanding. Tracing the expansion backwards revealed that the nebula must have become visible on Earth about 900 years before, exactly the same time that the Chinese had reported seeing it. The Crab nebula was the remains of a Super Nova, a star that had exploded. But as the Crab Nebula is about 1,600 light years away from Earth it actually had exploded about 500 years before the birth of Christ and had taken that long for the light to reach us from the blast. he Crab Nebula has always been a fascination for astronomers both professional and amateur. It is still expanding at the rate of over 1500 km per second, it currently measures about 13 light years wide. But what is interesting to professional astronomers is what

happened to the star after it had exploded? s late as 1963 the centre of the Crab Nebula was found to be emitting extremely powerful radio waves, in fact the most powerful source of radio waves and X-rays in the whole sky. Peering deep inside the cloudy gases that surround it astronomers discovered a tiny star less than 30 km wide but weighing more than our Sun. It is also spinning very fast at around 30 revs per second and emitting a strong pulse of energy on each revolution, a bit like a speeded up lighthouse. This discovery led to a new name being coined for these types of stars –Pulsars. he Crab Nebula is not visible to the naked eye but it can be seen through binoculars if the seeing conditions are right. Today’s modern telescopes and especially The Hubble Space Telescope have produced some magnificent images of the Crab Nebula (see above). To see it, first locate Orion; follow the three stars in Orion’s belt up to the right to a bright redcoloured star called Aldebaran. Aldebaran marks the eye of Taurus the bull. Now imagine the two horns stretching out to the left of Aldebaran marked by two medium brightness stars, M1 The Crab Nebula sits just above the lower star. (See diagram below.)

'Cash cow' criticism prompts Spain tops up car subsidy scheme by 175 million euros UK Government to tackle parking charges The law setting a minimum charge for parking penalties in the UK could be abolished to allow local authorities to lower parking fines for minor violations. The Department for Transport (DfT) is considering legal options to make the changes after criticism that councils use parking as a ‘cash cow’. The DfT is also looking at making five minute ‘grace periods’ – which some councils already operate voluntarily – a statutory requirement. Local authorities will also have to publish parking accounts to improve transparency. The announcements form the official response to a House of Commons report published by the Transport Select Committee last year. The report found ‘a deep rooted perception that local authorities view parking enforcement as a cash cow’. It also questioned the

SUV Roller

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is getting closer to deciding on whether to make an SUV, CEO Torsten MuellerOetvoes said in an interview. "It's a very interesting segment, definitely, and we are thinking about it," Mueller-Oetvoes told Reuters Insider television on Thursday, in response to a question about whether building such a car would be feasible. “We are playing with some drawings and we are starting now to look even deeper into the whole thing. A decision will only be done if we are convinced that this fits to the brand," Mueller-Oetvoes said. The CEO said the main difficulty was reconciling such a vehicle with the Rolls-Royce brand values which have not been associated with sportiness or offroading. Rival ultraluxury brand Bentley plans to launch an SUV in 2016 and has said it expects to create a new segment with the model, which reports say will cost around 180,000 euros.

disparity between parking fines compared with fines for more serious offences such as speeding. Councils collected record profits from parking charges and fines in 2012/13 but in December Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin froze parking penalty charges for the remainder of the current Parliament. A public consultation – due to end in February – on aggressive parking policies was also launched. It included the idea of scrapping CCTV camera cars for parking enforcement. Louise Ellman, chairman of the Transport Select Committee, welcomed the Government’s actions. She said: "There is a feeling that people aren't being treated very fairly, and that's what the report was about. "Councils do have a lot of discretion and that's right as it is a local service

Spain has expanded the car subsidy programme by 175 million euros and estimates it should generate related tax income of 1 billion euros, Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria (right) said.

but it is about being reasonable. "Councils must be much clearer about what they are doing with their money and what money they are making." Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said changes were needed to reflect the fact that parking offences were only misdemeanours . He added: "We need some proportionality and transparency. It was almost four years ago that the coalition promised to end the war on the motorist. “It isn't over yet but perhaps these latest proposals will take us a step closer to victory."

Málaga suffer away day blues at Levante

Women's Ashes Test, Perth (day four) Málaga travelled to Levante needing three points knowing that games against England 190 & 201 beat Australia 207 Valencia, Barcelona and Sevilla were on the horizon. & 123 by 61 runs Malaga 0 - 1 Levante England Málaga started the game really brightly, and, on 6 minutes Camacho headed narrowly wide from a Duda free kick. On 13 minutes Levante should have been in front, a spectacular shot from outside the box ended with Caballero fumbling the ball out to Barral who somehow failed to get to it. A Levante corner nearly ended in the Málaga net, as the home side came more into the game, and it wasn't long before Levante were in front, Barral heading home from a corner on 19 minutes. Caballero saved well for Málaga on 23 minutes as Levante went looking for a second. Málaga though were looking dangerous from free kicks but chances were

going begging. Flavio came on for his Málaga debut on 33 minutes after a Weligton injury. Samu then shot wide from outside the box with 39 minutes on the clock, as Málaga had a good spell at the end of the first half. In the second half Málaga made another good start creating three half chances in the first 5 minutes, the best from Eliseau who drilled the ball over from outside the box. Málaga were now dominating the second half and another chance fell to Camacho who slid the ball just wide after good work again by Eliseau. On 58 minutes after a great Málaga move Duda had his well struck shot saved and

Wayne’s Poker Tips Stud Poker

A number of people have asked me: How do you play Stud? Well here are the basic rules to get you started. Before the start of the Texas Hold'em boom over 10 years ago, Stud had always been the most popular poker variation in the United States. The game is played with two to eight players. Probably the biggest difference between 7 Card Stud and Texas Hold'em is that 7 Card Stud is a non-flop game. Each player gets dealt a total of seven cards, of which three are dealt face down and four are dealt face up. From these seven cards the player has to choose his best five-card combination. The hand rankings are identical to those in Hold'em; a Royal Flush is the best possible hand and the worst hand is the high card hand (no pair). Every player starts off with getting dealt three cards; two cards face-down and one card face-up. The two face-down cards are called the 'hole cards' and the face-up card is called the 'door card'. Based on these three cards you decide whether or not you want to continue with the hand. Like in any poker variation, hand selection is

extremely important in 7 Card Stud.

Antes, bring-in and betting

Every player pays an ante before getting dealt any cards. In our example we are playing a 1€/2€ Stud game with a 0.10€ ante and a 0.50€ bring-in. The three cards are dealt and the player with the lowest door card is forced to pay the bring-in of 0.50€. This player can also choose to bet 1€, which is called 'to complete'. The betting continues clockwise around the table, with players having the option to call, raise or fold. Once the betting is complete, every player left in the hand is dealt a fourth card (4th street). Now, and in all rounds still to come, the player with the highest upcards is the one who starts the betting.

Minimum bets for the remainder of the hand are: 4th street: 1€ 5th, 6th & 7th street (the river) : 2€

If you have any questions regarding poker or would like to add to anything in this column please email wayne@bolsa-fiesta.com

from the rebound another Málaga chance went begging. It just wasn’t to be for Sanchez nearly scored from the tightest of angles. With Málaga in a game which 7 minutes left another they had totally dominated. Next game on Friday Duda free kick was saved, as Málaga continued their night when Málaga face good work in the second Valencia at La Rosaleda. half. Stiff test for Farah’s first marathon

Mo Farah will face world record holder Wilson Kipsang in a strong field competing at the 2014 London Marathon. British double Olympic and world champion Farah ran half the race in 2013 and will make his full debut in the event on 13th April.

The 30-year-old will also face Olympic and world marathon champion Stephen Kiprotich over the 26.2-mile course. "I am expecting it to be one of my toughest races and a real learning experience," said Farah. Following his appearance in half of the 2013 London Marathon, he also won both titles at the World Championships in Russia last August. Reigning London Marathon champion Tsegaye Kebede and London course record holder Emmanuel Mutai are again competing in this year's race. Kenenisa Bekele is the only notable absentee, with the Ethiopian set to make his marathon debut in Paris on 6th April instead.

took a big step towards retaining the Women's Ashes by winning the one-off Test by 61 runs. Australia began the final day on 57-5, needing 185 to win, and Ellyse Perry (31) hit an early flurry of boundaries. But she fell to Anya Shrubsole (3-48), who tore through the tail to wrap up the victory before lunch. The win in Perth earns them six points in the multi-format series, and they only need to win two of the six limited-overs games to keep the trophy. It also restores some pride in English cricket

after the men's team suffered a 5-0 whitewash by Australia in the Ashes and were thrashed in the first one-day international on Sunday.

Jenson Button's father dies of suspected heart attack

Eddie Irvine convicted over brawl in Italian nightclub

The former Formula One racing driver Eddie Irvine has been sentenced to six months in prison by an Italian court. It is not yet clear if the retired racing driver will actually have to serve time in jail.

Former world champion Jenson Button's father has died aged 70 of a suspected heart attack. John Button was found dead at his home on the French Riviera by a friend on Sunday.

He was a strong influence on his son's career, which includes winning the 2009 World Championship. A statement released by the McLaren driver's agent read: "It is with great sadness I can confirm John has passed away."

It added that "initial signs indicate a suspected heart attack".

John Button was known as “Papa Smurf” in F1 and was a jovial character who liked a glass or two of red wine, and will be sadly missed.

He was convicted after a brawl with an Italian man in a Milan nightclub.

Irvine, who is from Northern Ireland, and Gabriele Moratti, the son of a former Milan mayor, were found guilty of “mutual injury". The pair had blamed each other for the dispute that took place in the VIP section of the club in December 2008. Both Irvine, 48, and Moratti had accused the other of using a glass during the brawl in Milan's Hollywood nightclub.

Ronaldo beats Messi to Ballon d'Or

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo beat Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich to win the 2013 Fifa Ballon d'Or. The Portugal captain, 28, was named world player of the year for the first time since 2008 by national coaches, captains and journalists. "First of all, I have to say a great thanks to all of my team-mates with the club and the national team," Ronaldo said as he cried during his speech. "Without all of their efforts, this would not have been possible. I am very happy; it is very difficult to win this award.”

Bunting takes BDO World Darts title It was 28-year old Bunting's first world title and the emotional Scouser could barely express his joy at finally winning the crown, as tears rolled down his face in the post-match interviews. He told BBC2: "This is my eighth time at the Lakeside. "The crowd has been fantastic. Thanks to everyone who has supported me." Bunting made his BDO World Darts championship debut aged 18 and reached the second round before losing to former world champion Ted Hankey. Norris kept within touching distance, though, and levelled the contest at 3-3 before Bunting showed his class to move three sets clear and put one hand on the trophy. There was then a brief fightback from Norris in the 10th which he won after a superb 140 checkout, before Bunting clinched the decisive set to lift his maiden world title. British Sochi medal hopes Lizzy Yarnold and Shelley Rudman finished second and third in the skeleton World Cup in St Moritz, Switzerland. Yarnold has finished on the podium in all six World Cup races this year, while it was Rudman's first top-three result of the season. United States' Noelle Pikus-Pace won the race, 0.40 seconds ahead of Yarnold, with Rudman 0:04 further back. A slight mistake from Yarnold saw her miss out on gold and she said: "They were a few bumps and scrapes but I'm really pleased there are two British girls on the podium. It shows our strength in depth." There are two World Cup races left with Yarnold leading the world standings.
