Women a majority in New Year's Honours

Actresses Angela Lansbury and Penelope Keith became dames in the New Year's Honours list which, for the first time, features more women than men. Six hundred and eleven women make up the majority (51 per cent) of the list – the previous highest proportion was 47 per cent. Penelope Keith, 73, who became a household name as Margot Leadbetter in 1970s sitcom The Good Life, said of her honour: "It's a recognition for not only my 54 years of being an actress but also for all the charities with which I'm associated and I think they'll be thrilled." A very Happy New Year

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and that 2014 will be kind to everyone. Our Christmas break was incredibly busy. I have to admit that, because I’m here in the office all the time except for Wednesdays, the house was looking a right tip and, have you realised that it’s only when you know you’ve got guests coming that you notice it? Well, we had a couple of friends coming, and it was only a couple of days but, where we have been decluttering meant that everything was upside down throughout the house and it just looked awful so we were up early each day for the five days leading up to Christmas Eve when they were due to arrive trying to sort it all out. Apart from all the usual tidying, we had to redecorate the dining room at the same time! Then after Christmas it was sorting out all the boxes with the “de-cluttered” stuff in - and that’s still ongoing. Even I have been a bit shocked at the amount of stuff I’ve accumulated over the 30 years we’ve been together. Mind you, it was worth it in the end because it all looks a lot better now. Jackson and the rest of our animals had a lovely time with us being there all the time with lots of treats being handed out. They also had loads of presents from their “other mum”, Jackie, who walks them when I can’t get back in time to catch the light or am away so, to Jackie a very loud couple of woofs and many, many miaows from them all. So, now it’s back to work and it’s time for everyone to get over the “break” and start to think about holidays so over the next few weeks I’ll try and give you some ideas of a few things you might not think of doing or going and seeing... there’s a whole weird and wonderful world out there for us all to enjoy!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU.

Towns and villages all over Spain will be welcoming Los Reyes Magos on Sunday evening, January 5th when they will arrive in procession, with bags of sweets. Celebrations will continue on January 6th when most shops and offices will be closed.

Realising that consumers would not bear the cost of a potential 11 to 13 per cent hike announced by the electricity companies, the government announced last Friday that the rise for the first quarter of 2014 would be fixed at 2.3 percent. That was the lowest proposal offered by the CNMC antitrust authority. The increase will affect 18.5 million consumers whose rates are based on the government’s TUR (Rate of Last Resort) system, the most common billing type in Spain.

With the latest rise taken into account, electricity rates have risen by 10 per cent over the past nine months, following increases of 3.1 per cent in October, 3.2 per cent in August and 1.2 per cent in July.

Since 2006, electricity prices have risen by 70 per cent.

Spain re-conquered Granada from the Moors

'2014 will be the year of the recovery' In his address to the media after the last Cabinet meeting of 2013, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said: “If 2012 was the year of cutbacks and 2013 the year of reforms, 2014 will be the year of recovery.” He praised the “attitude of all Spaniards in a difficult year” during which the “results of so much effort are starting to be seen”. Rajoy said there has been a “clear change in Spain’s situation” and added he was sure that 2014 would witness a drop in unemployment, which stands at 25 per cent.

The PM also highlighted the narrowing of the country’s risk premium to 230 basis points from the dangerously high levels of 2012, a six percent

increase in exports and last year's record number of tourists.

On the subject of Catalonia’s drive for independence from Spain, Rajoy repeated what he has said many times in the past: there will be no negotiation over a referendum that Catalan regional premier Artur Mas insists will be held in November. Rajoy said the process “will damage all of Spain and especially Catalonia”.

“I say yes to dialogue with everybody, but no to dividing Spain,” Rajoy said. “National sovereignty is not something I have at my disposal.”

Immediately after the prime minister’s press conference, Socialist leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba said: "2013 was the year of the three crises: the economic and social, the political and the territorial.” In 2013 “there has

been unemployment, poverty and inequality,” Rubalcaba said, adding that his party “will never be glad when things are going badly; neither will we fail to recognise that things are going well,” in reference to the slightly more positive economic data. However, he warned the government not to “hang medals around your necks that don’t belong to you,” noting that the central bank and European policy have been

Diplomatic offensive Centuries old sanctuary destroyed by fire against Catalan independence The Foreign Ministry has launched a major diplomatic offensive worldwide against Catalan pro-independence forces, ordering Spanish envoys to explain why secession is not the answer for Catalonia or Spain. Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo has sent out a 210-page manual to Spain’s 118 embassies and more than 90 consulates abroad, and to Spanish representatives who hold seats in 11 multilateral organisations. The handbook gives point-by-point arguments against Catalan independence and also explains the reasons why the Madrid government is against letting the November referendum to take place. The manual was inspired by British Prime Minister David Cameron’s “Stronger Together” campaign, explaining his government’s views on next year’s Scottish referendum. Titled Por la convivencia democrática (In favour of democratic co-existence), the manual states that “never since the recovery of freedoms has Catalan society undergone episodes of

anguish, social fragmentation and risk of confrontation as it is experiencing now. The drive for independence has caused confusion and dismay in Spanish society, including a large part of the Catalan people.” In the manual, the ministry deals with the pro-independence arguments in detail and covers the case against an independent Catalonia step by step. “It can be said with all historic exactitude that Catalonia has never, in its history of democracy, reached a greater degree of selfgovernment in all areas,

including its politics, economy and culture, as it accomplished on the day in which, by virtue of the Constitution and Estatut, the institutions of selfgovernment were returned to Catalonia,” the manual reads.

The Constitution – which the government argues does not allow any region to secede – was from Spain approved by 91.9 per cent of Catalans in 1978 in a region where there was 68 per cent voter turnout, a level of voter participation that has never been surpassed.

Strike sabotages King's speech King Juan Carlos's traditional Christmas Eve address was not aired on Catalonia's public television for the first time since the monarchy was restored, because workers at the broadcaster had called a half-hour strike for the exact time of the King's speech.

independence ploy to keep the King off Catalan screens.

In his speech, the King called for national “unity and coexistence” and praised all Spaniards, but especially the unemployed, for the way they were coping with the economic crisis. It was received favourably by all the political parties, except the Nationalist parties in the Basque Country and Catalonia. In his speech, the King

usually deals with the issue most topical at the time. In recent years he has thanked Spaniards for sacrifices in economic hard times and called on the Basque terrorist group ETA to disband.

In 2012 – which had the lowest audience for the yearly address in 15 years – the King said "no one is above the law," in reference to corruption charges against his son-inlaw, and the investigation into his daughter's finances

“Everybody has been deeply affected by the fire, whether they are a believer or not. This place was a museum of our history,” said Ramón Vilela, a sailor who lives close to the now ruined monastery.

The 12th-century sanctuary, which was rebuilt in the 18th century, had just been fully renovated. Tiled floors installed last century were removed, revealing the flagstones underneath. “It is such a shame that after such a careful restoration, they didn’t bother to install fire

alarms or smoke detectors. As usual, nobody bothers to think about these things until something terrible happens,” Vilela said.

Regional premier Alberto Núñez Feijóo said the reconstruction and renovation of A Virxe de Barca will be carried out, “whatever it costs,” after visiting the site on December 26th. He said

no expense will be spared in rebuilding the sanctuary, and that “all Galicians are totally committed to the rebuilding, rehabilitation, and replacement of this emblematic site”.

It has since been estimated that it will cost at least €800,000 to rebuild the sanctuary.

Arrests in global operation against credit card fraud Police arrested eight people last Sunday who are suspected of helping to steal more than $60 million from banks worldwide by hacking into credit card processing firms and withdrawing money from cash machines.

In a statement, the police said they had detained six Romanian citizens and two Moroccans on the outskirts of Madrid, and seized €25,000 in cash, around 1,000 blank credit cards, IT material and jewels in raids on several buildings. They said the

global hacking gang had been controlled by a single person, who had been arrested in Germany. They said they had acted with the help of an unnamed US security agency.

The arrests mark one of the biggest breakthroughs yet outside the United States in connection with a series of global bank heists, by coordinated cells that withdrew millions of dollars in a matter of hours. The Spanish-based part of the organisation was dismantled when it was starting to regroup to carry out an attack in

several EU countries and Japan, the police said.

They added that during an earlier raid in February, they discovered that 446 withdrawals had taken place in Madrid that month, with the Spanish-based arm of the ring obtaining $400,000 in a heist totalling $40 million.

They did not name the banks involved but said previous raids had involved withdrawals in several other cities, They said the ring's global takings amounted to over $60 million.

Mother and daughter hurt in Tenerife blast

A British woman and her eight-year-old daughter were among several people who were injured in an explosion at a hotel in Tenerife last Friday.

The woman was taken to La Candelaria hospital in Tenerife's capital, Santa Cruz, and treated for severe burns to her face and scalp following the blast at a hotel poolside

bar in the coastal town of Adeje. Her daughter suffered neck burns and received treatment in the smaller Hospiten Sur in Arona, to the south of the island. A 34-year-old Spanish woman was treated for minor injuries at the Quiron Costa hospital in Adeje together with a 38year-old Belgian woman. Authorities in the Canary

Islands said a British man had also suffered minor abrasions but the hotel denied this.

Emergency services were called to an explosion in a machine at a poolside bar in Bahia Principe hotel in Playa Paraiso. A spokesman for the hotel claimed that the British woman's husband and a second daughter had avoided injury but were

"obviously in shock" at what had happened. Local media reports said the explosion was caused by a beer canister.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are aware of reports of an incident involving British nationals and are talking to local authorities. We stand ready to help if needed."

Police bust counterfeit clothing ring Police arrested 99 people, including two imams, last week over the sale of 235 tonnes of fake designer clothes and shoes.

Counterfeit items were made in illegal factories in Portugal and then shipped to distributors in Galicia, the interior ministry said in a statement which claimed that sales had

generated profits of €5.5 million over two years. Part of the money was held at two mosques in the cities of Ourense and Xinzo de Limia. Among those arrested was the imam of the mosque of Xinzo de Limia, who is suspected to be one of the ringleaders. The mosque received nearly

€100,000 in donations from the ring, officials said. Police also arrested the imam at the mosque in the nearby city of Ourense, on suspicion that he was helping to launder money earned by the ring. Police seized more than a million fake items in several other cities, including Madrid,

Barcelona, Seville and Malaga. They also confiscated 60 bank cards, several weapons and software containing the logos of more than 200 registered brands.

Officers in northern Portugal closed 10 illegal factories where the fake goods had been made.

"Real black" Balthasar wanted

More than 2,000 people have signed an online petition posted by Change.org for this year's King Balthasar in the traditional three Kings’ procession to be a "real negro". the petition was initiated by Madrileño Miguel Calabria, who told Change.org, a platform for online petitions, that it made no sense for Balthasar to be a white man painted black. He said: "Fortunately, with the diversity existing in our society today, it is not necessary and makes no sense." Calabria acted after seeing a similar online petition in Pamplona that has collected 3,000 signatures. Calabria said: "i think the message we are sending our children by painting a man black is not correct."

Protection for vulnerable consumers

the Catalan regional government has approved a decree that will protect the economically vulnerable when they are unable to pay for their gas and electricity during the winter months. Between november and March, consumers who receive a cut-off notice will have a period of 10 days to present a Social Security report confirming they meet three basic requirements to activate a stay. these are an income of less than €569.12 a month, or 7,967.73 per year, for a couple; proof that all possible measures to reduce usage have been taken, and a deal with the applicant's provider that includes a social coupon discount that is automatically applied when the total wattage contracted is less than 3KW. if these requirements are met, providers will be unable to cut off consumers until april, with the accumulated debt “postponed under the conditions agreed by users and service providers, and that can be paid between the following months of april and october,” the government explained. the decree does not cover water.

World News Helicopter rescue for ice-bound ship

Passengers and some crew on a ship stuck in thick ice in Antarctica will be taken off by helicopter once the weather permits.

Russian officials made the announcement on Monday, after an Australian icebreaker making a fresh rescue attempt had to turn back.

The Russian-flagged research vessel Akademik Shokalskiy was trapped on Christmas Eve by thick sheets of ice, driven by strong winds, about 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart – the capital of the Australian state of

Tasmania. It is carrying 74 scientists, tourists and crew, who said they had more than enough food and are in no danger. The third attempt to rescue the vessel – by Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis – failed early on Monday because of fierce winds and poor visibility.

Earlier attempts by Chinese and French icebreakers to reach the ship were also foiled by the

thick ice. Journalists on board the Shokalskiy, said that at Tuesday morning's briefing they discovered that they would have to stay on the ship at least until the New Year.

The remaining crew members will stay on board until another, more powerful US icebreaker arrives in up to 10 days' time. Despite being trapped, the scientists have continued their

experiments, measuring temperature and salinity through cracks in the surrounding ice. Those on board include 22 Russian crew. Passengers are of various nationalities, many of them Australian.

The Akademik Shokalskiy is being used by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition to follow the route explorer Douglas Mawson travelled a century ago.

Thousands flee erupting volcano Thousands of people in eastern El Salvador fled their homes earlier this week after a volcano erupted on Sunday morning. Residents in the coffeeproducing region said they had heard a powerful explosion before the Chaparrastique volcano

began spewing hot ash and smoke into the air.

The authorities said no one has been hurt, but anyone living in a 3km radius will be evacuated. Temporary shelters were set up in the area, where some 5,000 people live. The Salvadoran government said it had

been monitoring the situation since December 13th, when they detected increased activity inside the volcano. There are more than 20 volcanoes in the small Central American nation. At 2,129 metres (7,000 ft) above sea level, Chaparrastique is the

third highest volcano in the country. It spewed lava in 1976 and caused a strong tremor in the area in 2010.

Officials banned from smoking in public

A circular issued by the Communist Party and the state council on Sunday has banned officials from smoking in public places like schools, hospitals, offices, and on public transport. China is considered the world's largest tobacco producer and consumer, with an estimated 300 million smokers. last year, the Health Ministry issued a report saying that China accounts for about 40% of global production and consumption of tobacco. The circular said: "Some officials smoke in public places, which has not only jeopardised the environment and public health, but tarnished the image of party and government offices and leaders and has a negative influence.' In addition, tobacco can no longer be sold at government and Communist Party offices, where signs prohibiting smoking are to be prominently displayed. It was not immediately clear what the punishment would be for those in violation. In 2011, China instituted a ban on smoking in public places like hotels and restaurants, but its implementation has been lax.

Power supply disrupted in heatwave

Public sector workers in the capital of Buenos Aires were told not to come to work on Monday while those in Buenos Aires province were told to leave work at noon, in an effort to save electricity. The city has been experiencing power shortages because air conditioning use has soared as residents try to keep cool during a severe heatwave. Some neighbourhoods have been without power for two weeks, with temperatures rising well over 35 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday night, electricity demand reached a record high for a nonworking day, as residents turned on fans and air conditioning units in an attempt to cool down homes. City officials held emergency meetings with federal officials on Sunday in an effort to co-ordinate assistance to those left without power for days. An estimated 11,000 people still had no electricity over the weekend. The heatwave is reported to be the worst to hit the city in 40 years.

Court approves 75% tax rate

The country's highest court has approved a 75% tax on high earners that is one of President Francois Hollande's signature policies. The initial proposal to tax individual incomes was ruled unconstitutional by the Constitutional Council almost exactly one year ago.

But the government modified it to make employers liable for the 75% tax on salaries exceeding €1 million. The levy will last two years, affecting income earned this year and in 2014. Football clubs in France threatened to go on strike earlier this year over the issue, saying the tax could spark an exodus of top players who are paid huge salaries. Businesses and wealthy individuals have condemned the tax – including film star Gerard Depardieu, who left the country in protest. Polls suggest a large majority in France back the temporary tax. Unlike many other countries in europe, France aims to bring down its huge public deficit by raising taxes as well as some spending cuts.

IOC 'confident' Games will be safe

The International Olympic Committee president said on Monday that he was confident that Russian authorities will deliver a "safe and secure" Games in Sochi. Thomas Bach wrote to President Vladimir Putin to express condolences for the "despicable" attacks that struck Volgograd within 24 hours. Investigators said the attacks on a railway station and trolleybus, which killed at least 31 people, were linked.

No-one has admitted carrying out either bombing. Volgograd was also targeted in October, when a suspected female suicide bomber killed six people in an attack on a bus. The authorities assume that the people who carried out the

Volgograd bombings were involved in the Islamistinspired insurgency against Russian rule in the Caucasus republics of Chechnya and Dagestan, and that the target was the Games. In a statement, Russia's foreign ministry did not blame any particular group and called for international solidarity in the fight against "an insidious enemy that can only be defeated together".

In his statement, Mr Bach said he was "certain

that everything will be done to ensure the security of the athletes and all the participants of the Olympic Games", which open on February 7th. But despite intense security in Sochi, Russians are very nervous that following the attacks in Volgograd – which lies 700km northeast of Sochi – bombers could also strike elsewhere. President Putin has ordered security measures to be tightened across Russia and in particular in Volgograd.

Israel releases 26 Palestinians Israeli authorities freed a group of 26 Palestinian prisoners on Monday as part of a US-brokered agreement to resume direct peace talks.

The prisoners were greeted by cheering crowds on their return to the West Bank and Gaza. Israel approved the releases on Saturday, but they were delayed to allow victims' families to appeal. The prisoners committed murder or attempted murder before the 1993 Oslo accords and have

served 19 to 28 years. Eight were released at checkpoints leading into Gaza and East Jerusalem.

The other 18 prisoners went to Ramallah in the West Bank, where Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas greeted them at his headquarters. He pledged to continue pressing for the release of other long-serving and sick prisoners. Palestinians celebrate the releases as victories over Israel – something deeply resented by families of

Israeli victims of political violence.

A spokesman for the Israeli victims' association, Almagor, told the Jerusalem Post: "These men are time-bombs. Wherever they go they kill, because that's the purpose of their lives."

The Israeli government has stressed that if any of the prisoners "resume hostile activity" they will have to serve the remainder of their sentences.

US 'to prosecute' Indian diplomat The US is proceeding with the prosecution of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade after her arrest earlier this month caused a huge diplomatic row. Ms Khobragade's detention on charges of visa fraud and underpaying her

housekeeper led to outrage in India, where she is seen as being victimised. She has denied all the charges and has been released on bail.

India has demanded an apology from the US over her alleged "humiliation". But an Indian news agency quoted US sources

Britain predicted to Mourinho pokes Britain become Europe’s fun at TV pundits stays with analogue largest economy As the busy English Premier League soccer programme plays out over the festive season Chelsea Manager Jose Mourhino, always something of a television entertainer, has made his pitch for a future in television.

While the British economy is rapidly improving, the man in the street is yet to benefit and the New Year announcement that Britain is destined to be Europe’s largest economy is hard to take. But that is what a new report is suggesting. Within 20 years Britain will overtake France and Germany.

But the Centre for Economics and Business Research also points out that Britain’s predicted gross domestic product will put it behind the improving economies of India and Brazil.

The report appears to endorse Britain’s decision to keep the pound and explains Prime Minister David Cameron’s enthusiasm for better business links with

improving worldwide.

economies

While Germany, traditionally Europe’s economic powerhouse, would lose its position as the largest Western European economy, if the Euro were to fail its outlook could be much better.

The research also suggests Britain could be stronger outside the European Union, although in the short term leaving would have a negative impact. The predictions assume a falling value for the Euro, a falling German population and a rising population in the UK. But it has to be said, we do live in an unpredictable world!

Chelsea beat close rivals Liverpool 2-1 and during one of his televised interviews Mourinho, always one to inject a little humour, suggested that almost all of the BBC television pundits were former Liverpool players, but there were none who had played for Chelsea.

He said that when aged 75, and presumably retired from management, he would became a television pundit and would

promote Chelsea’s cause.

In spite of a couple of defeats over the festive period, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers still believes Liverpool can challenge for the title.

And Mourinho endorsed the view that Liverpool were genuine contenders and were a good side even without Luis Suarez. “Let’s be fair, Liverpool did very well without him when he was suspended.” He pointed out that Liverpool could benefit by playing fewer games and being able to concentrate on the Premier League. Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal are still in the Champions League.

While the sales of new gadgets continues at a fast pace, radio listeners in Britain have not embraced digital radio in the way that the Government expected, and as a result analogue radio has been given a reprieve. Both the existing radio bands, FM and AM, were to be switched off in 2015, but many listeners have not been happy with the stability of the digital signal they receive and have continued to use FM.

Around a third of radio broadcasts are received from digital stations and only one in twenty people have digital radios in their cars. Less than half of households have a digital radio and even then many listeners prefer to use the FM band on their sets.

Weather fails to stop the shoppers

An estimate 13.3 million shoppers turned out for the January clearance sales on Britain’s high streets and shopping centres on Boxing Day, up two per cent on the previous year.

This increase in activity was in spite of seriously bad weather over the Christmas period, with heavy rain and wind causing flooding and property damage, power cuts and disruption to road, rail and air travel. Around £2.2 billion was spent on by shoppers, some travelling in darkness to queue from 3am outside Next stores. Around £370 million was spent on line during the day.

It seems some people can’t stop shopping even on Christmas Day, when the sales started on line. Store chain John Lewis reported a 19 per cent rise in Christmas Day sales.

Lord Howe says UK must stay in EU

A former pro-European Chancellor and Foreign Secretary during Mrs Thatcher’s Government has said Prime Minister David Cameron must make the case for Britain’s continued membership of the European Union. Lord Howe of Aberavon’s resignation over Europe in 1990 led to Mrs Thatcher’s downfall as Prime Minister and he has never been forgiven by some within the party for the divisions he caused. The Conservative Party is committed to an in/out referendum on Europe after the next General Election if the Conservatives win.

Lord Howe said in a statement: “Sadly, by repeated concessions to the Eurosceptics, the Government made its own position on Europe, and in Europe, more difficult.” He suggested the Prime Minister and ministers need to make the case for Europe rather that leaving it to President Obama, Nissan and the Confederation of British Industry.

Bid put an end Haass team fail to to ‘health reach agreement tourism’

In a bid to deter ‘health tourism’ the British Government is to charge overseas visitors and migrants for accident and emergency treatment from the National Health Service.

Ministers say no-one

will be turned away from accident and emergency departments but there will be a bill to pay for those from overseas.

Details of the scheme are still being worked out and the plan will be published in full in March.

Should parents smack children?

The Children’s Commissioner for England has said it is her personal view that parents should be banned from smacking children.

Maggie Atkinson, a former teacher, says that in law you are forbidden from striking another

adult and from physically chastising your pets but there is a loophole that allows you to chastise your child.

A light smack or ‘reasonable chastisement’ is currently permitted in British law.

Suspicious death in West Sussex Valerie Graves, 55, who had two grown up children, has been found dead at the home of Malcom and Jane Chamberlain that she was looking after for them over the holidays while they were away with their two children.

Mrs Graves was found at the house in Smuggler’s Lane, Bosham, near Chichester, West Sussex at 9.50am on Monday morning. She had been staying at the sixbedroomed house with three members of her family.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named said that the Chamberlains frequently had friends or family stay at the house while they were away. She added that the home was not rented out and people were generally happy to stay there because “it is a nice place to visit. There were cars parked in the drive, they were entirely well-behaved, they came gently and went gently, we

heard absolutely nothing."

Police confirmed that the death was being treated as suspicious and urged anyone with any information to come forward. Detectives from both Sussex and Surrey Major Crime Teams are investigating.

On Tuesday, Detective Chief Inspector Jon Fanner said: "At this stage we are keeping an open mind as to the motive, but we are appealing for witnesses who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area from late afternoon on Sunday, December 29th to around 9am on Monday, December 30th.

“This is a rare incident for Bosham, which is a safe area. We have increased our neighbourhood policing patrols in the village and if anyone has any information or concerns, I would urge them to speak to one of the officers who are there."

Overnight talks led by US diplomat Richard Haas in Belfast ended in stalemate on Tuesday morning with Northern Ireland's five main political parties having failed to reach an agreement over how to deal with flags, disputed parades and the legacy of the Troubles. However, Dr Haass said that “significant progress” had been made and all parties supported aspects of the proposed agreements but a number of concerns remained. He added that the next step would be to set up a working party from all five parties saying: "The choice is not between the text and some ideal. Rather it is the choice between going forward with an agreement of this sort which necessarily represents some compromise, and the status quo.” There was a chance that all the parties would back all or key parts of his proposals in the future.

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams indicated his party was ready to strike a full deal, and urged all those involved "to reflect upon the process" – but he said the talks could not continue forever. The DUP and Ulster

Unionists both indicated they had major difficulties with elements of the text with Ulster Unionist negotiator Jeffrey Donaldson MP saying his team "profoundly disapprove" of some of the report's language. The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) said it would also be conducting a consultation, but party leader Alasdair McDonnell said he would be recommending a general endorsement of the proposals. Alliance party deputy leader Naomi Long said she was willing to endorse proposals on the past, but not on flags and parades. Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers said: "It is disappointing that it has not been possible to reach a comprehensive agreement on flags, parading and the past within the timetable set out by Dr Haass and his team. Yet this should not be seen as the end of the road in seeking to find a way forward on these difficult and divisive issues. The Haass process has seen much valuable work done involving the political parties along with groups and individuals from across the community. Significant progress has been made. It

Child killer hangs himself in jail Julian Stevenson, 47, killed his 10-year-old son Matthew and five-year-old daughter Carla last May by slitting their throats with a kitchen knife following a bitter custody battle with his former French wife. And on Monday a source at the local public prosecutors office revealed he had now hanged himself in a sports hall in the Corbas prison in Lyon reserved for inmates in solitary confinement. Mr. Stevenson had a history of violence and alcoholism and fled the scene of the murder on roller skates. Previously, he had been banned by a court order to have any contact with the children without a third person being present. It is

believed that this was the first time he had seen the children alone since the order was made and in the hours before their deaths Stevenson, an unemployed former haulage firm manager, was captured on CCTV in a bakery with them buying sweets – they were each carrying a balloon. The 47-year-old, who had a history of violence and alcoholism, murdered his children in a fit of rage then fled the scene on rollerskates.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are aware of the death of a British national in detention in France on December 30th. We are providing consular assistance to the family."

is important to build on this and continue to seek agreement in areas that continue to be a focus for tension and division within society."

Northern Ireland's First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness invited Dr Haass after weeks of unrest over flags and marches. There were serious disturbances last December and January when Belfast City Council voted to limit the number of days the Union flag is flown on City Hall. Rioting flared during the summer marching season too when the Parades Commission prohibited an Orange Order return march at Ardoyne in north Belfast. Agreement on when flags should be flown has proven most elusive and the parties may decide to defer that issue to another process after the next election.

Debenhams profit warning

Manic Monday, the first Monday of the New Year Sales in the UK, failed to hit its normal spending fenzy heights leaving Debenhams to reveal their profits were nearly £30 down on last year and forcing them to issue a profits warning with shares in the store plunging by as much as 13% on Tuesday. The store added that while online sales were up on the previous year, they had not increased enough to stop the plunge in sales and share profits.

Debenhams spokespeople blamed the recent terrible weather, a drop in disposable household incomes and the general decline of the high street that the UK has been experiencing recently and announced that they expect additional markdowns to be implemented during the rest of this month and February to clear excess stock. The announcement, which had been due on January 17th but was brought forward because of the results, saw the retailer reveal an £85m profit for the 17 weeks to December 28th – some way off the £114.7m in the same period last year, a 26% drop. The company's statement showed that online sales had increased by 27% during that time and accounted for 15.6% of total sales, compared to 12.4% for the same period last year.

Díaz opts for Patio of the Lions Junta de Andalucia premier Susana Diaz chose the Patio de los Leones, the most famous spot in the Alhambra, to deliver her New Year speech, unlike her predecessors who always used the Junta's headquarters in Seville, the San Telmo Palace. Her message was simple – the Junta has to do everything possible to reduce the region's unemployment rate, which at 34 per cent is well above the national average of 25 per cent. She also intends to improve the public

Without mentioning the Catalan independence issue, she stressed her belief in the unity of Spain, while not being afraid to try out new ways of coexistence "without making any concessions to inequality and privilege". Once again, she stressed her determination to root out corruption at all levels of government – "achieving maximum transparency in public life is one of our essential objectives".

'Juan y John': Lennon in Almería forever the

News Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Professor Juan Carrión, who became a friend of John Lennon in the 1960s when the Beatle was in Almeria filming How I Won the War, is the subject of a book by journalist Javier Adolfo Iglesias titled Juan y John, el profesor y Lennon en Almería para siempre (the professor and Lennon in Almeria forever), which tells the story of Lennon's stay in Andalusia.

Lennon wrote Strawberry Fields Forever during his stay in Almeria and Carrión used the lyrics of that and other Beatle

songs as a teaching aid in his English classes. The professor said the songs were "a very important source of vocabulary". He said a teacher sometimes can't find the words to explain something and those of the Beatles “are very pretty".

Carrión remembered his conversations with Lennon at the presentation of the book in Almeria recently, which was also attended by the author himself, editor Alberto Cerezuela, and the mayor of Almería, Luis Rogelio Rodríguez

Comendador.

Adolfo Iglesias said his decision to write the book was based more on his curiosity about Lennon's stay in Almeria than his being a Beatle fanatic. He said Lennon wrote said, describing Carrión as a Strawberry Fields to pedagogic genius. escape from "the unbearably muggy Carrión said Lennon was afternoons – he wasn't too a "gentlemen from the top of interested in the film that his head to the tip of his was being made".

Second canine park planned

mayor esperanza Oña has said work will begin on a second canine park after the festive season ends on January 6th. The 3,600 m2 will be located in the miramar area in the west of the town, between San Gabriel, San manuel and the reyes magos streets. She pointed out that the Guau Guau canine was opened in march 2012, making Fuengirola a pioneer in this type of facility. The new park will have a gymnasium for the dogs and a fenced-off training area where the animals will be able to strengthen their muscles, the mayor said.

New fines for feeding apes

a Bill to amend the animals and Birds act to create fixed penalty fines for the feeding of Barbary macaques was published last week. While leaving the maximum fine on summary conviction by a magistrate at £4000, it introduces a new level of fining, on the issuing of tickets, which will be £500 for feeding monkeys outside the nature reserve, or enticing them from there, and £250 for feeding them within the reserve. Officers of the department of the environment and the environmental agency will be able to issue these tickets, as well as the Police. The new laws are aimed at deterring well-meaning people from feeding the macaques in builtup areas, which encourages them to take up residence there.

Of the five women who died at the hands of their former or current partners, two were under age.

For the second consecutive year, the local council will reduce the basura tax by 10 per cent this year. mayor Paloma García Gálvez said the reduction was in line with her commitment to the town's residents, who "had suffered a huge increase in taxes under the former (Socialist) council". The measure was passed by the votes in favour of the Partido Popular and the Unión de Centro Benalmádena, with the Socialist Party and the United left voting against it.

Last year was the worst year for domestic violence since records started being kept in 2003.

The two previous worst years were 2006 and 2009, when four women were killed each of those years. Malaga is also the province in Andalusia with the highest number of gender murders – 29 of the

New Year wish list

I

apologise for sounding a bit academic but Wish No. 1 has to be that the improving economic figures – record exports, record tourism, increasing foreign investment, etc – at the macroeconomic level start filtering down to the microeconomic level, which essentially means more jobs to reduce the unemployment rate which will get more money circulating, people will start buying more and in the medium term everyone will be better off.

H

aving got that boring economic bit off my chest, on the political scene I can only hope that the Socialists will come to their senses and stop attacking Mariano Rajoy and everything his government does in the belief that this will mean more votes for them at the next general election, to be held towards the end of 2015. The tactic won't work because the economy will have recovered enough by then for people to vote for the party that brought it about, that is, the Partido Popular.

F

ormer Socialist PM Felipe Gonzalez left the economy in pretty much the same state that Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero did, and it took Jose Maria Aznar four years to repair the damage. He did it by applying virtually the same economic policies that Rajoy has applied, which didn't stop people from voting him in with an absolute majority. But the Socialists have a very short memory span and seem incapable of learning from their mistakes.

T

hird on my wish list – or should I say hit list – is that Catalan regional premier Artur Mas simply evaporates some time soon. This man, whom I once regarded as being slyer than a fox and now see as the personification of evil, is leading Catalonia down the road to disaster. He admitted over Christmas that an independent Catalonia probably wouldn't be recognised by the European Union but has now come up with the theory that the EU will grant him a "transition" period, whatever that means. He insists there will be some sort of referendum on independence for Catalonia in November this year – some weeks after the independence vote in Scotland.

O

pinion polls indicate that a majority of Scots will vote against it, which would probably encourage the antiindependence silent majority in

Catalonia to go to the polls. It will be interesting to see how he wriggles out of that one. But if there is one thing Mas is an expert at, it's wriggling.

T

he Catalan independentistas have made a big noise about the fact that a million and a half people took part in the "chain for independence" last year – people holding hands along the Catalan coastline in favour of independence. However, there are seven and a half million Catalans. Where were the other six million that day?

F

ourth on my wish list is that the BBC, the Guardian, the Telegraph and the New York Times will stop calling the ETA Basque terrorists "separatists". The United Nations, the US government, the European Union and the Spanish government classify ETA as a terrorist group. All I can ask is – what did the aforementioned publications call the organisation most similar to ETA, that is, the IRA? It's a typical case of those close to home are terrorists but similar groups abroad are freedom fighters.

A

s for ETA, its prisoners' collective has acknowledged the "harm" their long and bloody fight for independence has caused in what most observers see a just another ploy to soften the government's stand on the whole ETA prisoner issue. There's not much chance of that, now that the European Court of Humans Rights has managed to let 60 or so hardened terrorists and a smaller number of criminals get out of jail and upset a majority of Spaniards in the process.

T

he Spanish security forces believe that ETA only has 50 members or so right now, although the French claim they still have enough explosives stashed away for at least another 30 bombings. I predict the whole mess will drag on until a majority of Basques send the message that they don't want independence from Spain. I suspect that both the Basque pro- and anti-independence factions are waiting to see what happens in Scotland and Catalonia before making a move. The Basques aren't quite as short-sighted as the Catalans.

If you’ve never owned a mobility scooter before, the thought of the process may seem a little daunting. I can assist you by going through all the options with yourself.

There are literally hundreds of scooters on the market today which I have access to, so finding the correct model for yourself is crucial as – like a car – you will probably have it for a few years. Not all people’s disabilities are the same, so choosing the right model is key to assisting you in your daily

life to give you the freedom you deserve.

My aim is to continue the great hire service that's been built up over the years and carry on offering a wide range of mobility equipment to holiday makers and locals alike either to hire or to buy.

The plan for the New Year is to get new hire scooters to replace the current stock, so the hire fleet is up for sale. Call now to secure a bargain for the New Year to help you get around. So for all your mobility needs, don't hesitate to call Tony on 952 44 77 64 or 699 16 19 49 for an informal chat. May I take this opportunity to wish you a happy and healthy 2014.

Lux Mundi Torre del Mar’s “magical” Christmas

Lux Mundi , Torre del Mar Ecumenical Christmas Carol Service was held on Saturday the 14th December in the Parish Church of San Andres in Torre del Mar, where Christians from different traditions, friends and residents in the Axarquia, came together to pray and enjoy the traditional carols. The prayers were led by Don Miguel Angel Alonso, Parish Priest, Pastor Mads-Bjorn Jorgensen Danish Church and Rev. James Tayler Anglican Church, and the carols were performed by the choirs of “Coro Santa Ana”, “Los Cantadores German Choir”, “Tapas” English Choir, “Children from the Parish catequism Scholl” and Mr. Stephen Schramm, accompanied by Ms Inger Marie of the Danish Church. During the singing of the first carol there was a candle lit procession to the altar performed by friends of Lux Mundi and after the introductory Blessing,

N 13

during the second carol, the friends lit all the candles placed around the altar, bringing “The Light of Christ to shine over all those present at the service”. At the end of the service, during the singing of the last carol, the congregation was asked to take the candles placed in the church pews and these were then lit by the friends, the lights of the church were then turned off and the final Blessing was made in candle light. It was a moving and beautiful carol service with a difference and after the service many friends went back to the Lux Mundi, Centre, to enjoy a buffet and drinks and of course more carol singing. Lux Mundi give thanks to all who supported them as they raised the generous amount of €659.26 to be distributed between ANNE Axarquia and the Parish Caritas. This helped to make these children smile at this special time, to buy

presents for the local children and food for the families in need. A party was organised by Caritas at the Chapel in Las Melosas on Monday 23rd December, with entertainment by “La Carpa” a local institution specialising in events for children, so there was fun for all, Christmas presents for the children and Caritas provided the families with food for over the Christmas time. Written by Patricia Rothwell of Lux Mundi.

Celebrations abound for the arrival of the Kings - Los Reyes Just as everyone in the UK is winding down from Christmas celebrations, ready to take down the decorations and the tree for another year, the Spanish – particularly the children – are gearing up for yet another night and day of celebrations. Los Reyes Magos or Three Kings arrive each year in procession on the evening of January 5th, by land on horseback (and sometimes with the odd camel) or on highly decorated floats and even by boat. The crowds who welcome their arrival watch the colourful and frequently noisy cavalcade while trying to avoid the flying sweets that are thrown out for the hoards of eager children who vie with each other to collect the most. (And don´t underestimate how much it hurts when a flying boiled sweet hits you on the head!) Melchior, Baltazar and Caspar – the three wise men who brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh for the Baby Jesus – have long been part of tradition throughout the Spanish speaking world. And, although Spanish children have enthusiastically adopted Father Christmas (who is seen climbing up many a Spanish balcony these days) they still expect a visit from the Kings on January 5th. Instead of stockings children leave out their shoes, hoping to find them filled with goodies the next day, and put out treats for the camels rather than Santa’s reindeer. Traditionally gifts are given on January 6th

rather than Christmas Day (and, of course, our Boxing Day is just another working day over here).

Another important tradition after the presents are opened is the breakfast of Roscón de Reyes. This is a ringshaped cake with colourful candied fruit or fruta escarchada on top, symbolising the precious gems worn by the wise men. The roscón can be filled with fresh nata (whipped cream), trufa (truffle cream) or cabello de ángel (angel’s hair, a sugary pumpkin jam). Inside the cake are two small objects: a bean and a small king. Whoever gets the slice of the cake with the small king is crowned the “king” or “queen” of the banquet, and is said to have good luck for the rest of the year. Whoever finds the bean has to pay for the roscón! Just pop into your local Spanish supermarket and you will find them in great quantities, adorned with gold crowns. Although

virtually

every village has its own Cabalgata de Reyes the most impressive, understandably, pass through the larger cities. Malaga always puts on a very memorable one but sadly last year’s is remembered for a different reason, since a young boy was killed by one of the floats as he tried to gather sweets.

This year the route of the procession has been altered and the floats protected with polystyrene to avoid accidents. The route, which generally starts around 17.00 hours is as follows: Ayuntamiento de Málaga, Avda. de Cervantes, Plaza General Torrijos, Paseo del Parque, Plaza de la Marina, Alameda Principal, Puente de Tetuán, Avenida de Andalucía, calle Atarazanas, Puerta del Mar, Alameda Principal, Plaza de la Marina, Molina Larios, Cortina del Muelle y, de nuevo, Avenida de Cervantes.

Light a light New Consul at RAFA dinner at Cudeca

The Lions’ volunteers A massive thank you to La Cala Lions' Volunteers

La Cala de Mijas Lions finished off their busy year with a sincere thank you Christmas Lunch for their great band of volunteers.

These ladies – and a few men – work tirelessly in the Lions’ shops in La Cala de Mijas helping Manageress Rosemary to sort, price and sell the hundreds of bags of donations they receive during the year. Clothes, books and bric-a-brac are

amongst the many items needed. Over fifty volunteers and members of the Lions attended a delicious lunch at the Newmarket Restaurant in La Cala. Grateful thanks too to the restaurant who opened up especially for the day.

Wishing all our supporters a very Happy and Healthy New Year, we look forward to seeing you during the year at our various events.

PETS OF THE WEEK

On 13th December, Cudeca held its annual Light a Light Christmas ceremony in memory of loved ones.

"Light a Light" is a special tribute to those we have lost by the lighting of a candle which continues to shine during the festive season. Thanks to the joint participation of all, we enjoyed a great evening and raised funds from much appreciated donations.

Friends were entertained by the brilliant performances of John Mathisen with his Euphonium, Santa Claus bearing gifts thanks to Leslie Thompson, the Torremolinos Choir, the Sunny View School children’s choir, and a choir from Alhaurin de la Torre, "Cantando Entre Amigos". The highlight of the evening was the switching on the of Cudeca lights surrounding the Hospice Centre. It was a night full of warmth and emotion and very special for the patients, family and friends of Cudeca.

In addition, we were joined by the Mayoress of Benalmádena, Paloma

Garcia; Inmaculada Hernández Rodríguez, councillor of Environment, Health Service and Parks; Francisco Salido Porras, councillor of Welfare; Ana Macías Guerrero, councillor of Igualdad and Participación; and Juan Antonio Lara Galán, councillor of the town hall, who offered words of support for the care Cudeca offers to those who most in need within the province of Malaga. They also gave a commemorative plaque to Cudeca.

Throughout the years, Cudeca has cared for more than 8.000 people with advanced and non-curable illnesses via the costfree multidisciplinary programmes; Homecare, In-patient Unit, Day Care Centre, Rehabilitation and Psycho social care – all coordinated from our Hospice Centre.

Tom & Sofia

Meet Tom on the left. Tom was taken to the perrera as he was to be a hunting dog but is too nice natured and so he was abandoned. He is loving, playful and intelligent. Loves all dogs and great with children.

Meet Sofia on the right. Sofia was rescued from the perrera. She wants to be next to you all of the time, she loves people. She is gentle and fine with other dogs and cats. A perfect addition to any family.

PAD animal charity regularly rescue animals from the perrera which is where they are taken from various situations to be put to sleep. They have lots of dogs to choose from apart from Tom and Sofia, so go and meet them and find your new best friend who is desperate to be loved. The RAFA Christmas dinner and dance proved to be a hit for her first official duty of its kind with our new Consul to Malaga, Charmaine Arbouin. Charmaine wore a beautiful floor length gown that was perfect for the season and participated in the raffle, presentation and dancing at the Tamisa Golf Hotel, Mijas Costa.

Following canapés, a three-course dinner was

served after which the European Area Presidential Certificate of Achievement was awarded to Reg Haywood, for his work in welfare. His certificate was presented to him by Ms Arbouin.

A raffle with many very good prizes raised much needed money for RAFA funds and the assembled guests then danced until the small hours.

Sold out Collegium musical success There was standing room only ... ...because once again, the word had spread around Marbella that the Choir and Orchestra of Collegium Musicum under the baton of their Director of Music, Annemarie Philipps were giving a Christmas concert in the Iglesia de la Encarnacion on December 17th. Works were mainly by European composers, with one exception, which was the opening movement from El Nacimiento by Ariel Ramirez who hails from Argentina. Two of the many highlights from the programme were the Vivaldi Concerto for two trumpets and orchestra, with soloists Angel T. San Bartolome and Juan Carlos Jerez Gomez giving virtuoso performances, and the six dances from the Capriol Suite by Peter Warlock. Both these were ‘sans choir‘ which gave the audience their chance to show their appreciation of music making to a very high standard. The carols, many of

them unknown to me, were by French, German, Spanish, Austrian, English and Scottish composers. The works from these last two were Holst's ‘The saviour of the world is born', Pearsall's ‘In dulci jubilo', and a traditional Gaelic air ‘Child in a manger'. Two works from the pen of Spaniard Jose L. Blasco were particularly well received, as was that old perennial by Schubert, the 23rd psalm – ‘The Lord is my shepherd'. The musical arrangements are made to suit the ‘present' orchestral mix, by the president of Collegum Musicum, Delyth Bressington, who would like it to be known that they warmly welcome new singers and musicians. For more information go to their web site www.colmus.org If a single word were to be used to describe the evening, it would be JOYOUS. Written by Morris Bishop

FOTA enjoy Christmas at El Brujo

Soroptimists give again

Childrens’ concert in Marbella Youngsters from the British School of Marbella helped kick-start the yuletide spirit after putting on a carol concert at the Hotel Gran Meliá Don Pepe on Tuesday, December 17th.

The 30 strong choir sang to a crowd of around 100 family members,

teachers and hotel guests during a 30 minute performance that included 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas'.

The children, aged between four and nine, also impressed the audience by learning sign language for one of the festive songs.

Sixty nine members of F.O.T.A. – Friends of the Theatre Association of the Salon Varietes – enjoyed a splendid Christmas Lunch at the El Brujo restaurant last Thursday. Despite the large number of diners the restaurant staff coped admirably, providing a mouth-watering feast! Entertainment was provided by London Bobby on vocals and keyboard while Trish Reynolds rolled back the years to serenade everyone with a couple of standards.

The week before Chistmas saw the ladies from Soroptimist International Club Costa del Sol prepare special Christmas parcels at the Red Cross for 450 families in need in the Municipality of Mijas. “We always try to help the Red Cross at this time of year”, said Jenny van der Mark, Club President, “and this year our wish was to help bring some Christmas celebration to these families by giving them speciality foods.” The local Soroptimist branch in Mijas made money through sales at stalls in two different Christmas markets. The Club also received generous donations from the Danish Freemasons, Soroptimist members and friends, as well as the sale of shares in the National Christmas Lottery, el Gordo. “We especially want to thank the GM Cash & Carry for giving us such

Members of the British Society were celebrating after a very successful Christmas Fair held at Villa Luisa and, despite the economic situation proceeds from the Fair topped the figures for the Christmas Fair held in 2012.

Members of the Society provided some wonderful prizes for the raffle and ticket sales from the raffle contributed a large percentage to the fair proceeds.

The Home Produce Stall had an attractive display of home made pickles, jams and preserves for Christmas and a variety of small and large cakes as well as apple crumbles etc in handy sizes for one or two people. Winners on the Tombola walked away with bottles of wines, spirits or tempting boxes of chocolates. Colourful plants were on display with Christmas Poinsettias being a popular choice or a variety of pansies for the garden tubs. The Café and wine stall was the place to be for a relaxing lunch before moving on to find a book to read in the darker

evenings, a new outfit on the Gear Change Stall or a useful item on the Brica-brac stall.

After the draw for the raffle people gathered in the bar enjoying a drink as the sun sparkled on the sea.

Meanwhile the Treasurer finished checking the proceeds from each stall before handing the sheet to the President John Simpson. John thanked everyone for their help in organising and running the stalls and congratulated them on the proceeds raised. He also thanked the members who had contributed raffle prizes and items for the Home Produce Stall, and also the cooks who had provided the lunches and snacks.

Other events for December included a Quiz on 3rd December, Christmas Carols and mulled wine on 17th December and a Christmas Lunch Party on 22nd December. Around the world but a little quicker and cheaper now The well-known adventure character Phileas Fogg bet half his fortune (20,000 pounds or 23,000 euros), to circumnavigate the world in 80 days with the other half of the fortune expected to be spent on doing so . These days with modern technology it would take nothing like the 80 days it took him some 100 years ago and a fraction of the cost according to holiday price comparison site Trivago. Trivago wondered how many days this odyssey could be completed in, and at what cost, taking into account the technological breakthroughs and new means of transportation. Based on a route designed to stop at the 10 major cities as in the original voyage of Mr. Fogg, you could do the same journey

in a mere 20 days, enjoying at least one day in each location for around €3,345! So next time you look at Easyjet or Ryannair and think they’re expensive, compared to Phileas Fogg’s day they’re incredibly cheap.

Over the next few weeks we will be making some suggestions for holidaying in 2014 so keep an eye out and you may find something that you had never thought of doing before that will take your fancy!

Over the past few weeks the TAPAS Choir had been raising funds for Malaga Ciudad de los Niños and on Tuesday 17th December members of TAPAS delivered over €400 of food, toys and clothing for the children.

There are 50 children from families with problems who live at the centre and many more disadvantaged children come in on a daily basis for meals. There is also a school. Though the Junta de Andalucia gives an allowance for each child the centre is always in need of funds, especially in these difficult times, so

TAPAS intends to continue to support this very worth charity in the future.

To learn more about Ciudad de los Niños visit their website at www.cnmalaga.com/php/es/

TAPAS’s recent performances of Inspector Drake and the Black Widow were, as usual, very well received with rave reviews so keep a look-out for details of their coming performances in The News. They always welcome new members and, even if you don’t want to act yourself, there’s always something needing to be done behind the scenes that would be much appreciated by this happy group of people. Donkeys and Directors A group of 225 French multinational Nestle executives taking part in an incentive trip to the Costa del Sol, played a donkey polo match in the bullring Mijas Pueblo bullring recently. The Mijas Taxi donkeys were the horses, brooms were used mallets and the ball was not wood, but a child’s plastic football. The commercial director of Expoloramás, Fabian Lomeña who organizes the company’s recreational and sporting events said that everyone had thoroughly enjoyed the game with each side “becoming distinct and determined to win!”

The lack of the donkey’s prowess at sports meant that each had their own guide who served as it’s own “sports director” and the lack of expertise of the riders in polo meant the match was hilarious encouraging the executives to take photos on their mobile phones, downloading them to Facebook with one exclaiming: “We are convinced that everyone will have a picture on their mobile because our friends

in France just won’t believe this! They have discovered Mijas, its magnificent climate and landscape, and are convinced that they will return," said Fabian. The group also participated in the reforestation of a plot in Puerto de la Gitana, destroyed in the great forest fire of August 2012, with the planting of 500 trees, including 100 oaks and as many buckthorns. "I like it here and it was interesting to learn about what happened in the terrible fires of 2012" said Juan Antonio Molina, one of the organizers of the activity.

Mijas Town Hall facilitated the repopulation 500 trees by making holes and providing technical advice from the staff of the Department of Environment, whose director, José Francisco Ruiz Fontalba, said he “hoped it would rain soon" to ensure the success of the planted trees. However, the organizer of the event is committed to frequently water the trees.

The Andalucian Garden Group’s next meeting is as usual on the second Tuesday of the month – this one being on Tuesday 14th January at Bar La Peñita, behind the BP garage in Alhaurin el Grande at 5.30pm for a 6pm start.

First of all we will hold our Annual General Meeting, chaired by Graeme Holmes. After this brief meeting, the talk will be given by two of our members – Eileen and John Jackson. They will take us on a stroll through a magical and inspiring garden, which they visited when they were in Italy last summer. Afterwards we will have a short member’s Question and Answer time, when we can get help and hints from some of the more experienced gardeners in the Club. We also have a very extensive library and

members can borrow books each month. Visitors are always very welcome and if you want to just come for a particular talk, the fee for one meeting is €5. If you haven’t yet paid your annual subscription, then now is the time to take advantage of the discount rate!

The meetings provide a great opportunity to make new friends and pick up some gardening hints as do the monthly coffee mornings at members’ gardens. These are always enjoyable and a source of inspiration and motivation. We all need that!

If you would like to know more, then just phone Eileen (952 455 213) or Chris (952 119 767). Look forward to seeing you on the 14th! Article submitted by Eileen Jackson

The Royal premiere of this movie in London was overwhelmed by the poignant news that the man to whom it pays tribute had died very shortly before screening began. And the death of Nelson Mandela led to an avalanche of newspaper and magazine articles and wall-to-wall television coverage about the man, and the events leading up to his body being taken to his ancestral home.

So the story of one of the most important men of the 20th and 21st century is probably more familiar and fresh to us now and makes the release of the account of the life of the late South African leader very timely.

It’s based on his autobiography, which was painstakingly and secretly written while he was imprisoned and smuggled out by a fellow prisoner. It’s a worthy and

The movie is driven by a powerful performance by Idris Elba (best known for The Wire and Luther) who brings to the fore the man’s charisma and charm. But the movie is

not just about the myth that was Mandela and it does not shy away from the less attractive side to his character either. Naomie Harris is equal to the task in portraying Mandela’s second wife Winnie. The film includes all the major landmarks of Mandela’s life and is a respectful film which helps us understand one of the most heroic struggles for freedom.

TAURUS

Partners may seem unpredictable still and seem to constantly surprise you with their antics, but as you enter the New Year it is likely you will perceive them in a different light. Liberation from the old is your key word for the moment; if you have been walking around in circles then it is time to take a less travelled route, the change of pace with prove fruitful.

Not all tears are because of a hurt and not all things that seem crazy are madness – sometimes by allowing yourself to experience something different, that you would normally sit in judgement of, can give you a whole new outlook. This is how you begin 2014, with choices which can make you feel a little restless until you take the time to reflect on what holds real meaning for you.

GEMINI

Although you thrive on activity even you Gemini could be finding the speed at which things are now moving quite overwhelming. The good news is it is a major sign that you have turned a corner and as one thing leads to another it is likely you will be doing some considerable travelling in the upcoming months. Now you are swimming in the right lane, every stride you take will be supported.

CANCER

There is still an element of stress in your life and you realize more than many the benefits and rarity of relaxation. The beginning of 2014 gives you the opportunity to forge new partnerships and friendships – you are not meant to be alone and this year will show you this tenfold. You will have an inner drive to accomplish all you can in the first part of the year and others will have a hard time saying ‘no’ to you.

August 23rd September 22nd

There are many things that have been left unsaid and your instincts are willing you to say everything you have ever wanted to. By delaying the inevitable who are you protecting? Make sure that you have enough rest and relaxation as your energy levels may be lower than normal so the idea is to pace yourself. There is a lot going on behind the scenes that will eventually work in your favour. You begin 2014 feeling slightly overworked and wondering if you have taken on too much but this all begins to fade as January takes hold. Many of the restrictions that bogged you down in 2013 will leave you and you will find that you have much more personal freedom. Others will be opening up to you and sharing more of their thoughts and feelings, some will be quite revealing and encourage you to reflect upon your own inner depths.

Say it as it is Libra. I know you like beating around the bush or sitting on the fence but directness works a treat for you right now. If you work on directing your energy and focusing your drive then the world is your oyster. Recognition is yours to claim and those that doubted you will be surprised at the turn of events that are happening in your life. This is a new beginning September 23rd - that you have worked and waited for.

There is a rising ambition in you to close the doors of the past, reconcile the injustices of the past, verbally clear the decks and feel free to walk down your own path. As this negativity leaves you it will be easier for you to relax down and recharge your batteries. Financially the horizon is looking good and there is a clear sky ahead.

Your heart is longing to express itself this New Year, in fact it will be hard to keep you quiet or your passions hidden from view. You will feel ready to take on anything new as we enter 2014, you are relaxed and in tune with the universe, so everything seems easier than normal. Personal relationships, love and romance become sensuous and exciting.

It may feel like you have been through the mill, completely jigged up and about until all that you were clinging to has crumbled away. Even though you could feel vulnerable and exposed, an issue that was weighing you down has been eradicated. Everything is working out for you even if things seem confusing right now, you will begin 2014 with a fresh perception.

Adventure comes your way and gives you a chance to do the extraordinary. A change of plan is likely and if you go with the flow you will find that this unpredictable turn of events becomes a voyage of discovery. A person from the past may get in touch, some unfinished business that needs sorting out but if you meet it with a spirit of compromise much can be achieved.

Insights are causing you to become much more aware of the real reasons, motivations and actions of others. This will allow you to invest your energy in the places that support where you are heading versus where you have been. Foresight is a valuable skill and you will be feeling grounded enough to be able to access this quality. Unpredictable tides in early 2014 will not throw you off course.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

This favourite Italian rice dish has been tweaked making it low-fat and nourishing. Prep: 40 mins Cook: 35 mins, just 475 calories and perfect for veggies

Healthier Risotto Primavera

Ingredients: • 350g bunch asparagus • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 bunch (about 9) spring onions, ends trimmed, sliced • 17g fresh or frozen peas • 250g shelled fresh or frozen broad beans • 2 tbsp shredded basil • 2 tbsp snipped chives • 1 tbsp finely chopped mint • finely grated zest 1 lemon • 1.7 litres/3 pints vegetable bouillon

(Serves 4)

• 4 shallots, finely chopped • 3 plump garlic cloves, finely chopped • 300g carnaroli or arborio rice • 150ml dry white wine • 25g parmesan (or vegetarian alternative), grated • 25g rocket leaves

Directions 1. Cut the ends off the asparagus, then slice into 5cm diagonal lengths. Heat half the oil in a large, wide non-stick frying pan. Tip in the asparagus and stir-fry over a medium-high heat for about 4 mins or until nicely browned all over. Stir in the spring onions and fry for 1-2 mins with the asparagus until browned. Remove, season with pepper and set aside. Cook the peas and beans separately in a little boiling water for 3 mins each, then drain each through a sieve. When the broad beans are cool enough to handle, pop them out of their skins. Set the peas and beans to one side. Mix the basil, chives, mint and lemon zest together in a small bowl and season with pepper and then set aside. 2. Pour the stock into a saucepan and keep it on a very low heat. Pour the remaining oil into a large, wide sauté pan. Tip in the shallots and garlic, and fry for 3-4 mins until soft and only slightly brown. Stir in the rice and continue to stir for 1-2 mins over a medium-high heat. As it starts to sizzle, pour in the wine and stir again until the wine has

been absorbed. Start to stir in the hot stock, 1½ ladlefuls at a time so it simmers and is absorbed after each addition. To tell when it is ready to have the next 1½ ladlefuls added, drag the spoon across the bottom of the pan and it should leave a clear line. Keep stirring the whole time, to keep the risotto creamy. Continue adding the stock as above – after 20 mins the rice should be soft with a bit of chew in the middle. If it isn’t, add more stock – you should still have at least a ladleful of stock left at this point. Season with pepper, you shouldn’t need to add any salt. 3. Take the pan off the heat. Pour over a ladleful of the remaining stock to keep the mixture fluid, then scatter over all the vegetables, a grinding of pepper, half of the herb mix and half the cheese. Cover with the pan lid and let the risotto sit for 34 mins to rest. Gently stir everything together, if necessary adding a drop more remaining stock for good consistency. Ladle into serving dishes and serve topped with a small pile of rocket and the rest of the herbs and cheese scattered over.

THURSDAY, January 2nd 2014

Well, Christmas may be over for another year but I had a question pertaining to the Christmas lights in Coin. At one end of the town there is a sign across the street which reads "Feliz Navidad". At the other end of the town is another sign which says "Felices Fiestas". I was asked which was correct. Well, the answer is that they both are. Feliz Navidad means Happy Christmas while Felices Fiestas means Happy Holidays The doubt of my student arose with the change of "feliz" to "felices". All Spanish words which end in z in singular change it to ces to make them plural. So una vez is once and dos veces is twice Un pez is one fish and dos peces is two fish Un lápiz - a pencil. Dos lapices - two pencils.

This is useful to remember if you are looking up a word in the dictionary. For example, you will not find the word codornices in any dictionary. However, using your knowledge and intelligence you will be able to work backwards and change the final "ces" to "z" and so look up codorniz - quail.

No doubt most of you will know that in Spanish not only the noun becomes plural but also the adjective, the word which is describing it.

That is why feliz (happy) becomes felices (happy when referring to more than one thing). So, un avestruz is an ostrich and dos avestruces would be two ostriches And un avestruz feliz is a happy ostrich while dos avestruces felices are two happy ostriches. Who knows when you will need to use this in casual conversation? And with that it only remains to wish you all Feliz Año Nuevo - Happy new year.

Hasta la próxima - Until next time. Valerie

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Sue,

During winter my skin gets very dry and my foundation won't apply properly. How can I prevent this? Chloe, Mijas Dear Chloe,

The dryness is a result of the natural change in moisturising factors and keratin in your skin. Make sure you exfoliate regularly

have a course of peeling facials to get rid of dead skin cells which will enable foundation to go on more evenly. Use a serum under your moisturiser specifically designed for a dry skin. Use products after a shower so they can penetrate more. Check the cleanser and toner that you are using are designed for dry skin. Dear Calvin,

Kate, Fuengirola

Are blackheads and whiteheads different things? How do I get rid of them?

I have fair skin and blue eyes, could you give me any guidance? Dear Kate,

Having fair skin and blue eyes,it is best to keep to the warm spectrum of the colour wheel, such as honey, gold, copper, caramel and light chocolate shades, as all these shades will give your fair skin a nice glow. Please bear in mind that if you are going for a complete change, you will probably have to change your makeup tones and possibly look at changing your colours clothes wise. Often clients forget

Dear Sue,

Jayne, Torremolinos Dear Jayne,

Blackheads are enlarged pores with blocked openingsthe black is not dirt but trapped oxidized sebum. Eliminate pore-cloggers such as too-rich moisturisers, heavy foundations and concealer. It's not about hygiene – it is excess oil production. Avoid squeezing – it can damage pores and lead to scarring. Instead have a facial to have them extracted at a salon.

A whitehead is a blackhead with a layer of dead skin over it, so keep your skin regularly exfoliated. Dear Calvin,

I travel a lot back and forth to England and mostly travel with just hand luggage, which makes it difficult for me to take my hair products. Do you know a company that sell professional products in 100ml sizes? Karen, Benalmadena Dear Karen,

Paul Mitchell have just re-introduced their 100ml sizes which are perfect for you, I have currently in stock the colour saving range, the moisture range and the

extrabody range. Each pack has three 100ml products in it for just €25. The advantage with these packs is that once you have the bottles you can top up from your larger bottles. Most professional companies no longer produce these smaller products as they say they are to expensive to produce, so I am very pleased that Paul Mitchell have decided to bring them back as I get asked your question alot If you have any questions for Calvin or Sue, you can contact them on email – Calvin, calton1@hotmail .co.uk and Sue’s email is aniathome05 @gmail.com. Laughter not always the best medicine A new review by British researchers describes the many harmful effects of laughter – it can dislocate jaws, prompt asthma attacks, cause headaches, make hernias protrude and provoke cardiac arrhythmia. It can also cause incontinence – dubbed “giggle incontinence” by an irreverent team of researchers in 1982. The equally irreverent team who carried out the review have said that 2014 is poised to be the year of the humourless healthy. Their analysis, "Laughter and MIRTH (Methodical Investigation of Risibility, Therapeutic and Harmful)", was drawn from about 5,000 studies and appeared in the Christmas issue of the

British Medical Journal. For more than 30 years, it has traditionally featured rigorously researched but light-hearted articles in its Christmas issue.

This year, companion studies in the issue include “Were James Bond's drinks shaken because of alcohol-induced tremor?”, and "The survival time of chocolates on hospital wards: covert observational study".

The researchers said their review was timely, because BMJ had not addressed laughter in a serious fashion in over a century. In 1898, it had published a case study of heart failure in a 13year-old girl following prolonged laughter.

The next year, the laughter problem was raised again, when an editorial writer, in response to an Italian doctor’s suggestion that telling jokes could treat bronchitis, dismissively proposed the term “gelototherapy” (Gelos was the Greek god of laughter; in Italian, gelato is ice cream.).

Respiratory threats caused by laughter include the popping of alveoli (the air sacs in the lungs, which together typically contain about 600 million). The researchers said: “If you’re going to make asthmatics laugh heartily,

they might want to have an inhaler by their side.” There are also choking hazards, such as ingesting food during belly laughs.

The MIRTH review did take an even-handed, costbenefit approach to laughter, noting ample evidence of its salutary effects. It concluded that laughter’s benefits included reduced anger, anxiety and stress; reduced cardiovascular tension, blood glucose concentration and risk of myocardial infarction. “The benefit–harm balance,” the researchers wrote, “is probably favourable.”

After months of gruelling, muscle tensing dancing one of Stricly’s best arrives, despite Gatwick!

Kristina and her mum Larisa were guests at Club La Costa World and last night saw in the New Year at a gala dinner at the resort. The twosome fly back to the UK today and Kristina starts rehearsals with rugby star Ben Cohen on January 6th as they prepare for the Strictly UK live tour. Kristina visited Marbella five years ago but it was a first visit for Larisa, only marred by being caught up in the Gatwick delays.

I loved Malaga and Puerto Banus and would love to visit again soon," said the Russian star, who joined Strictly in 2008 when she was famously partnered with political correspondent John Sergeant, who dragged her across the dance floor in a memorable Paso Doble! Their highest judges score throughout that year’s competition was 25 out of a possible 40 points. In 2009 she was partnered with Joe Calzhagie, in 2010 with Goldie, in 2011 with Jason

At 15-yearsold the youngster became a part-time dance instructor to help with the family budget and was soon earning in a day what her professional mother could earn in a month in the former Soviet Union. At 21 she was asked to move to the USA to look after Russian dancers based there. Her career in the States went from strength to strength and from there she gained 1st place in the South African International Latin Championship (2005–2006), 2nd

Between 1941 and 1945, merchant ships escorted by vessels from the US, Canadian and British navies delivered 4 million tons of essential goods to the Soviet Union. In this documentary, Jeremy Clarkson retraces the journey of the convoy of 35 ships codenamed PQ17 from Iceland to the Russian port of Arkhangelsk in June and July 1942, revealing how the Anglo-American mission became one of the biggest naval disasters of the 20th century.

Dolphins Spy in the Pod

Mon, Jan 6th 9.00pm

SATURDAY January 4th

First of a two-part documentary taking an intimate look at the world of the marine mammal, one of the most captivating and intelligent creatures on the planet, using camcorders attached to fast-moving submersibles to record life in the oceans. The manmade `spies' swim alongside bottlenoses and a megapod of spinner dolphins, filming behaviour rarely seen before, such as a newborn and his mother hunting kingfish, while nearby males play chicken with supertankers, visit a coral health spa and surf the waves. Narrated by David Tennant.

Opinion Fuengirola

Jim Fenton

The notice on the back of the Airbus seat told me "Enjoy real coffee – AS YOU LIKE IT. Was the Los Boliches based "Thespa Playreading" gang joining the crew on board to serve hot drinks before performing yet another comedy, but this time one by the Bard himself? Not a bad idea. There was more. "Choose from 3 great blonds on board" trumpeted the advert. "Great in-flight

entertainment" I chortled, until a steel-tipped elbow skewered me, and my companion hissed, "It's blends, not blonds. It's an ad for coffee bags!” And so it was. With full directions on making a DIY coffee with the coffee bag and scalding water thoughtfully provided, together with timing notes (3 minutes for regular coffee and 5 minutes for a stronger brew). By now tossed by an even stronger gale, the Airbus

Pauline I know this is a very busy time for you all, but there are many dogs being looked after by FAMA, the animal rescue charity, so if anyone is looking for a rescue dog to share their home and their life with,

I have liked your paper since it first came out and read it even when I’m back in the UK. That’s online of course as I can’t get a “real” one but I can’t possibly miss my latest instalment of Wickham’s World (heavens, does that woman lead a busy life – she must be run ragged!), I

was doing the Gay Gordons whereas its Captain would have preferred the Palais Glide, thus the arrival of the Coffee Bag Trolley was a welcome diversion So, on to the final phase: “Stir”. The lady in the window seat creates a stir by wishing to go to the loo. A 5 minute Stronger Blend becomes the 9 minute Cooler blend. But it's good coffee!

FAMA small, medium or large, please check out our website www.famaspain.com or contact: Pat on 620 354 885. Many thanks to all of you

Denise MacDonald I must say that I shall be looking forward to my first copy of The News of 2014.

have to see what the inimitable Ms Pilkington has to say for herself, plus of course her opposite in Marty Delfin. I read Ken Campbell’s Stargazing piece every week which is most interesting and a majority of the time I even manage to understand it all and love to stand in my garden gazing skywards to see what he’s talking about, especially when the International Space

Station was zooming around overhead. I love the bit about what’s on and where, Sue and Calvin’s hair and beauty tips, the sports pages are never boring – even to an old biddy like me and the news itself is informative and accurate without putting me to sleep like other papers I could mention! Thank you, The News and Happy New Year to you all.

Anne Staines It has always struck me that the ex-pats that live here on the Costa del Sol seem to fall into two categories. The first are the sensible ones who join all the clubs and societies and make a life for themselves here by meeting new friends and aquaintances. The others, it seems to me and, after all, it is only my opinion, seem to do nothing but moan about their lot. I know people from both sides and those from the latter I just cannot understand. All right, at the moment it’s winter time and somewhat cold of late but, at least on most days the sun comes out to warm your back while you go about

Riviera

your business and I have noted that these same people that are now moaning that “We didn’t come ‘ere for the cold, did we?” are exaclty those people who just two or three months ago were wishing it would rain “just like it does in England” and “it’s too flippin’ ‘ot for me ‘ere!” All I can say is that there is an alternative. They can either join the first group of people and start enjoying their lives or they can trot off back to the UK and be flooded out, blown away with the winds or spend practically the whole of your outdoor life wet from the constant drizzle. I know which I would rather do!

Comment By Ken Campbell

Changing times It was my birthday on New Year’s Eve, and I got to thinking, 40 years ago I was a 15-year-old schoolboy and how things have changed since then.

I

n January 1974 co-operation between NASA and the USSR was non existent. The cold war was still too ‘hot’ and it would be another 18 months before they could put their differences aside and link up in space during the historic Apollo-Soyuz rendezvous. Now NASA doesn’t have the ability to launch manned space flights anymore and so all astronauts are launched into space via Russian rockets. n 1974 NASA were struggling with their ailing SKYLAB space station. The third and final crew of three spent Christmas 1973 on board before returning to Earth in February 1974. SKYLAB itself was abandoned and left to eventually burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere in 1979. Now, after an international agreement between nations including USA, Japan, Europe, Canada and the Russian space agency we have the mighty International Space Station orbiting the Earth every 90 minutes. Its current crew of six have been up there since November 2013 and are due to return to Earth in March 2014. e didn’t quite get it all right back in 1974. I remember writing an essay in school entitled ‘life in the year 2000’. Flying cars were high on my list. Routine trips to the Moon and back, I passed on the silver suits and didn’t realise just how much we would all come to depend on computers. atellites have also completely changed our lives, everybody now uses a mobile phone, watches satellite TV, uses a satnav, watches upto-the-minute weather reports, the list of uses for satellites is almost endless and all of these things were pure science fiction back in 1974. ur knowledge of the Solar System and deep space has had to be virtually rewritten. In 1974 ‘I knew’ that Jupiter had 10 moons, that Pluto was a solitary planet and that there was no water on the Moon but probably vegetation on Mars. All these things turned out to be untrue. We now have probes in orbit around Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. There have been two fly pasts of Uranus and Neptune and in 2015 the New Horizons probe will pass within 6,000 miles of Pluto and its family of four moons after a flight lasting over nine years. here are currently three rovers exploring the surface of Mars looking for even the tiniest signs of life. It is now believed that liquid

water may still be flowing beneath the Martian surface but that all important sign of life is still eluding us. he Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990, has shown us more than we could ever have imagined about the Universe. It now seems that every answer generates a thousand more questions. The Hubble deep space image was created when Hubble was able to find a tiny area in our Galaxy that contained no stars. It peered out into deep space through this gap and captured an image containing thousands of individual Galaxies. If this image is a random sample of just how vast the Universe is then it extends beyond our imagination. ince 1974 we have flown spacecraft to comets and asteroids, Halley’s Comet was ‘buzzed’ by six separate probes back in 1986. We crashed the Deep Impact probe into another comet in 2005. Also in 2005 NASA landed the Huygens probe on the largest of Saturn’s Moons Titan and discovered a world with a dense atmosphere and lakes of liquid methane. he discovery of hundreds of Exoplanets orbiting around other stars was given priority with the launch of the Kepler Space telescope in 2009. Although the telescope developed faults that greatly reduced its ability, it still discovered almost 150 Exoplanets. Based on these figures astronomers estimate there could be over 400 billion planets in our Galaxy alone. t’s disappointing that we scrapped the Space Shuttles and have not returned to the Moon. I was hoping to be able to book a fortnight’s holiday on the banks of the Sea of Tranquillity by now. ut all things considered, we’ve certainly come a long way since 1974. I had hair back then and my favourite group Slade was at Number 1 with Merry Xmas Everybody.

ook to the future now, it’s only just begun. Happy New Year!

Christmas festivities at Mijas Bowls Club The Christmas season began early at Mijas Bowls Club with the annual dinner/dance held on 10th December at Restaurante Valparaiso....

Citroen release some teaser images of Cactus C4 Citroën has published a batch of teaser images that preview the production version of the Cactus concept that bowed at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September. The car will debut on February 5th, 2014, a date that marks the 136th birthday of founder André Citroën.

Tentatively christened C4 Cactus, the crossover will retain the concept's high ground clearance, tall front end, narrow headlights and floating Cpillars. With huge pressures on showroom pricing for mainstream brands and the premium makers continuing to make hay, Citroen bosses sat down to completely re-think the cars that European mainstream makers should be building in the future. The cars needed to be cheaper to build, cheaper to run, and, easier to own.

The Cactus came out of research which suggested that the way people were interacting with technology was changing very quickly, with the new emphasis on simplicity, driven by the smartphone revolution. This also means decluttering the interior, completely ‘taking out elements of the traditional dash’. The low running costs are intended to extend beyond frugal engines. The radical ‘air bump’ panels in the doors are designed to make the Cactus immune from typical supermarket carpark damage – a must here in Spain then.

Indeed, Citroen’s emphasis on ease of ownership is pinned on the idea that if a car is too highly-finished, trying to keep it that way (and being distressed by damage) is a big part of making car ownership stressful. In that

sense, the Cactus is a very French car: there’s a clarity and honesty in its design as well as it being unpretentious. Because Cactus drivers aren't the sort who squeal round corners on the doorhandles, there's no need for deep quasi-sports seats. Instead the front seat is a sofa-like bench. It has a remarkable effect on relaxing you. The designers say it's also very sociable. Apparently when people are sitting in the car they tend to have longer conversations than when

they're sitting in a pair of normal car seats.

Much of this will be carried into production. Most C4 Cactuses will have manual transmissions, so the sofa-bench is slightly reshaped to allow a gear-lever. But the screens, the separate air vents and the glovebox are real enough. The arrival of the real Cactus in showrooms later in 2014 will test this most French philosophy, but Citroen’s future is pinned on its success.

... at which a group of bowlers and some friends enjoyed an excellent meal and some good entertainment before dancing the night away.

That was followed quite quickly by the Christmas Draw on Sunday 15th December when bowling took place during the morning. After the bowling came a buffet lunch which, on this occasion, was provided by the members. While all those present were enjoying carrot cake made by Jenny Parkin, the draw began and many superb prizes were won. On Boxing Day bowling took place during the morning instead of the afternoon and, as if not enough had been eaten and drunk on Christmas Day, about twenty went for a

C.O.G.S. end their season at at’s a turn-up Santana Golf Club The end of season game was played at Santana Golf Club, with sixteen players and guests taking part. The course was in, as always, very good condition. The results for the day were as follows.

Nearest the pin on hole 16 Ian Holden, longest drive on hole 10 John Bamber.

The winning team with an average score of 93 points was Dave Haworth, Charles Randell, Chris Gardener and The News’ own Geoff Heading. The day’s main competition went as follows. In third place with a score of 30 points was Gerry Owens, second place with 31 points was Zack Sturgess and in first place with 32 points was Del Allwood. On the Saturday 45 players, their partners and guests, celebrated the end of season annual awards presentation and Christmas dinner at Lainey’s, with Frankie B supplying the music.

Thanks go to all the staff at Laineys’ for their service on the evening and

From L to R, Charles Randell, Andy Macfarlane, Sav Ramayon, Joe King, Gerry Owens and Del Allwood

to Frankie B for his performance which was greatly enjoyed by all.

The evening was opened by yours truly welcoming everyone, and then handing over to Joe King our Captain to carry out the presentation of the year’s trophies, which were as follows.

The 6’s competition was won by Charles Randell with a score of 167 points. The 8 from 12 resulted in Sav Ramayon with 203 points finishing in second position and Ian Holden with 207 points taking the winner’s trophy. Now to the winners of the main trophies for our 2013

season. In third place with 273 points was Del Allwood, in second place with 285 points was Gerry Owens and in first place with a score of 289 points was Andy Macfarlane. Well played Andy, a worthy winner.

Well that’s it for our 7th year and how quickly it has gone. I think the older you get the quicker time flies by. Our thanks go to John Bamber our Treasurer, Andy Macfarlane our Secretary for another dedicated job he has done for the Society and to Joe King our Captain for carrying out his duties to the full despite suffering through

illness, and all the members would like to wish Joe a full and speedy recovery.

We are now taking new members for next year and anybody who would like to join us please see our notice board in Lainey’s Bar, with all the relevant contact phone numbers. Lastly I would like to thank The News for allowing me to write the articles throughout the year, and, to wish all the readers a very happy and Healthy New Year. Nig Bowler. Chairman.

Wayne’s Poker Tips Chris Froome: Tour de I was asked this week by a novice player, who has a very limited bank roll of 30€ wanting to play for real money on one of the leading on line sites, whether he should play cash or tournaments. The answer is simple – play both. With a small bank roll he must play the micro limit cash/ring games of 1c/2c, and also play the double-your-money sitand-go tournaments, say at the 1€ buy in. He needs to play both because different players have different strengths which can make you a better cash or tournament player. Phil Hellmuth has won many WSOP bracelets, all at Holdem may I add, and is probably one of the best tournament players ever. As a cash player he has not really been up there with the likes of Doyle Brunson, who is also a great tournament player with many WSOP bracelets to his name at various formats. With cash you need to be aggressive from the start. If you have the odds to make a call or feel you’re

ahead you call if you’re beat rebuy and carry on with the game. However in a tournament (unless a rebuy format) you can't, one mistake and you’re out! I would have to think hard about laying down AK to a 4 bet in a cash game but in tournament play in the early and mid levels this would not be a hard fold, for the simple reason it is better to wait for a better spot, hoping one of the two aggressive players busts out laddering you up the leader board to a prize spot. So my advice is play the small sit and go tournaments to test your tight aggressive game and the micro cash games for your loose aggressive style. But always remember it's selective aggressive play and good hand selection that wins long term. If you have any questions regarding poker or would like to add to anything in this column please email wayne@bolsafiesta.com

France winner signs new Team Sky deal Led by 2013 Tour de France winner Chris Froome, the team extended the contracts of 10 riders to solidify a squad which has enjoyed another marquee year.

Four of the nine-man Tour de France line-up have since put pen to paper on new deals, with Froome, Peter Kennaugh, David López and Ian Stannard adding to the mid-season contract extension of Richie Porte. In Kennaugh, Stannard and Froome, the team sees three British founding riders continue their successful journey with Team Sky. After two strong years in the pro ranks, Luke Rowe followed suit alongside Salvatore Puccio, the latter buoyed by a season which saw the Italian don the famous maglia rosa in his Giro d’Italia debut. Sergio Henao added wins

to his immense promise in 2013 and the Colombian will continue his development with a new contract going forward. Sergio will be joined in the squad by cousin Sebastian Henao in 2014 – one of four new signings alongside Nathan Earle, Mikel Nieve and Philip Deignan. The team also took steps to retain experienced riders, with another founding member, Chris Sutton, staying on with the team. Few riders have more Grand Tour knowledge than Danny Pate and Xabier Zandio, with both men also lining up in Team Sky colours next season.

Just before the Christmas festivities began Novak Djokovic, accompanied by his coach, Boris Becker, trained at the new tennis venue run by 'tennis brothers' Frank and Bernard Frances, which is located next to the Marbella Superbowl Bowls Club. Novak is training in Spain ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year in Australia.

Novak Djokovic, with Jamie Ali, owner of Superbowl and Holly, one of his staff

The Bowls Club held a 'Fun Christmas Tournament' in which over 30 members took part with Pat Fisher and Janet Holden coming out as winners. After the tournament all went on to enjoy a Christmas lunch at Pasta Caffe.

On Sunday 5th January the club is holding a Three Kings’ Day Tournament, which is an open event and all are welcome. A lunch will be served at the club following the event. For details please ring 952817713. By Janet Holden

Henrik Stenson wins European Tour's Golfer of the Year award Henrik Stenson has won another title after being voted the European Tour's Golfer of the Year for 2013.

The 37-year-old was the unanimous choice of the selection panel after a stunning and trophy-laden campaign. The Swedish player won the money list titles on both sides of the Atlantic, was runner up at the Open and third at the PGA Championship. Stenson began the year ranked outside the top 50 but his form means he heads into 2014 as world number three.

In the standings he trails only Tiger Woods and Masters Champion Adam Scott. It took a runner-up finish in Houston in early spring to enable the Swede to force his way into the field for the Masters in April.

"That was a big one in terms of how my season shaped up," Stenson said. "It has been an unbelievable year and I'm delighted to win the award especially as I'm the first Swede to do so.

IOC 'confident' Sochi Games will be safe

The International Olympic Committee president says he has confidence that Russian authorities will deliver a "safe and secure" Games in Sochi. Thomas Bach wrote to President Vladimir Putin to express condolences for the "despicable" attacks that struck Volgograd within 24 hours. Investigators say the attacks on a railway station and trolleybus, which killed at least 31 people, were linked. They struck just over a month before the Winter Olympics begin. (Pictured Putin and Bach)

Michael Schumacher's condition improves Former motor racing champion Michael Schumacher's condition has improved slightly after an operation to relieve pressure on his brain, his doctors have said. A new scan taken overnight showed signs that he was "better than yesterday", but he was still "not out of danger", doctors said.

The seven-time Formula 1 champion suffered head injuries on Sunday in a skiing accident in the French Alps. The driver had been skiing off-piste with his teenage son when he fell and hit his head on a rock.

He was first evacuated to a hospital in the nearby town of Moutiers.

Professor Chabardes said the driver was in an "agitated condition" on arrival in Moutiers and his neurological condition "deteriorated rapidly".He was put in a medicallyinduced coma. An initial scan on Monday night showed "an improved

situation" and indicated a window of opportunity for a second operation, doctors said.

The family took the "difficult decision" to give consent for the procedure, and doctors operated on Schumacher for about two hours. A subsequent scan revealed a "slight improvement".

On Tuesday the medical team at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Grenoble

said his situation was "better controlled" than it was on Monday, but that he was not out of danger yet and remained in a medically-induced coma in intensive care.

Alastair Cook wants to remain England captain Tomorrow the 5th and final test gets underway in Sydney – the last chance this England team have of denying Australia the 5-0 whitewash. Australia have named uncapped Tasmania batsman Alex Doolan in their squad. The 28-yearold is added as cover for Shane Watson, who injured his groin in the eight-wicket victory at Melbourne. Former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott was scathing of the team after their third day batting collapse. Boycott; "This day promised a great deal for English cricket but finished really disappointingly," he said on TMS. "I feel very dejected after feeling this

was England's best chance to win for a long time. I'd like to be in the dressing room telling them what I think. They think they're better than they are. They've won three series against ordinary Australian sides and they think they're world beaters. "I hope they don't go home thinking everything will be all right when they get back to England because it damn well isn't." You have to love old Geoffers!!

"We can't say he is out of danger but... we have gained a bit of time,'' said Dr Jean-Francois Payen. "The coming hours are crucial. But all the family is very much aware that his state is still sensitive and anything can happen."

Anelka agrees not to repeat controversial celebration

Anelka, 34, made the sign – described as an inverted Nazi salute – after scoring his first of two goals in Saturday's 3-3 draw at West Ham. France's sports minister accused him of a "disgusting anti-Semitic" gesture. The French government is trying to ban comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala's shows over his use of the gesture and Anelka confirmed on Twitter he did it in support of the performer. A statement from West Brom said: "The club has asked Nicolas not to perform the gesture again. Nicolas immediately agreed to adhere to this request."
