World pays tribute to Nelson Mandela

Tens of thousands of South Africans and 91 world leaders attended the national memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday, undeterred by the rain The world's major newspapers reported the ceremony minute-byminute, noting the cheers whenever someone the crowd liked - such as Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and US President Barak Obama was mentioned or appeared on the stadium screens, and the boos when South African President Zuma appeared. All the speakers had to contend with the noise and Master of Ceremonies Cyril Ramaphose frequently pleaded with the crowd to show

discipline and not interrupt them. He also apologised for the rain, but said it was a blessing for Africans: "In our African tradition, when it rains when you are buried the gods are welcoming you"

Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said: "It's a blessing from the ancestors welcoming a son of the soil." UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon was cheered when he took the podium. He told the crowd: "South Africa has lost a hero, a

ICKHAM’S

Birthdays There are two birthdays of note to us this week. The first is our own, The News 5th Birthday. Some said that starting in a recession we’d never make it but, here we still are getting better and stronger all the time. Not a week goes by without someone telling us how much they prefer the concise yet detailed news we put out, the various columns, articles and puzzles, and it’s just such comments that mean so much to us and keep us all going when it gets a bit tough sometimes, just like every business in Spain goes through from time to time so... thank you to all our readers for their lovely comments and of course all our advertisers - it’s all of you that keep us going! The second birthday is next Tuesday and that is my husband’s. I have already said that I couldn’t do this job without our readers and advertisiers, but neither could I do it without my Geoffrey so, thanks for putting up with me! And, while I’m at it, a huge thank you has to go to everyone who works so hard to get The News out every week. The men and women who put their hearts and souls into The News deserve a medal. They work long hours getting all the best news every week for everybody else to read so, thank you all very much.

Last Sunday was spent packing boxes. I am a total squirrel and I love all these TV shows where they re-do a house for people and they always look fabulous and uncluttered - so, I’m afraid it’s time for some stuff to go... and it’s not easy for a complete hoarder like me who always thinks something “might come in handy one day” and, very often they do but, how long should I keep stuff? No doubt I’ll throw something out then need it the very next day! Ah well, I do have to admit that the house looks better already for it.

Nelson Mandela became a worldwide symbol of resistance to apartheid after being jailed for life in 1964, but his opposition to racism began many years before.

Born in the rural Transkei on 18 July 1918 into an African royal family largely dispossessed by colonising, he attended Methodist boarding schools before going to the only black university in South Africa, Fort Hare, where he began to rebel against authority and ended up being expelled. After experiencing racism at the University of Witwatersrand, he joined the African National Congress in 1944 and helped establish its youth

league. Together with a group of young, intelligent and highly motivated colleagues, he set about transforming the ANC into a mass political movement.

For much of the 20th Century, two vast monoliths had provided South Africa with its ruling elite: the National Party and the Dutch Reform Church. Their creed was based on an idiosyncratic Afrikaner reading of the Bible, with the Boer community cast in the role of the Chosen People. The origins of apartheid apartness - went right back to the very beginnings of

On the run

A key point for Mr Mandela came two years later, when 69 people were shot dead in a protest against the Pass Laws, an event which became known as the Sharpeville massacre. Days later, the government declared a state of emergency and banned the ANC.

Hundreds of political activists, including Mr Mandela, were arrested and detained without trial. In 1961, South Africa left the Commonwealth after rejecting the idea of majority rule and reconstituted itself as a republic.

Charged under the Suppression of Communism Act in 1952, Mandela received a suspended prison sentence and was later banned from public meetings and confined to Johannesburg for six months. In 1955, Mr Mandela played a key role in writing the ANC's Freedom Charter, which stated that South Africa belonged "to all who live in it, black and white, and that no government can justly claim authority unless it is based on the will of all the people".

The following year, he was among 156 political activists, including much of the ANC's leadership, to be

European rule in Southern Africa, but it was only with the election of the first National Party government in 1948, in a white-only ballot, that racial segregation was thoroughly codified in law. In the early 1950s Mr Mandela toured South Africa, organising campaigns of mass civil disobedience.

Mandela was made commander of its newly formed military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe.

Worldwide campaign

On the run, Mr Mandela adopted a series of disguises including those of a chauffeur and a gardener. He travelled outside the country looking for support, but was arrested in South Africa in 1962 and was jailed for five years.

Two years later, Mr Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment for organising sabotage at what became known as the Rivonia trial. He was sent to Robben Island jail. In 1990, the South African government, which had already begun to water down some aspects of apartheid legislation, finally agreed to open negotiations, and Mandela was released. He easily won the election in 1994 and became South Africa's first black president, by which time apartheid had been dismantled. The rest is now history and will linger on in people's memories for many generations to come.

National News Minister denies witch hunt at Tax Agency

Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro has denied there is a witch hunt at the Tax Agency (AEAT), where several top officials were replaced last week.

However, he said told reporters at last Friday's Constitution Day ceremonies that the department which audits the country’s biggest contributors and where most of the firings took place was filled with Socialists. “They left because they didn’t like the director,” he said. The situation came to a head last week when the department's head, Luis Jones, resigned, leaving the door open for the Agency's new director general, Santiago Menéndez, to launch a

major management overhaul, replacing top officials with his own people with Minister Montoro's approval.

The minister denied that they were replaced because of agency’s controversial handling of various issues, such as Princess Cristina’s ID mixup, the Nóos case involving her husband Iñaki Urdangarin, the fiscal amnesty for former Partido Popular (PP) treasurer Luis Bárcenas and the throwing out of an appeal by the Spanish subsidiary of the cement

giant Cemex against a €450 million fine.

Socialist leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba said he would ask for a special parliamentary investigation after accusing Montoro and the government of purging employees inside

the Tax Agency.

However, sources inside AEAT said that all the changes were part of the normal process of having a new director general and that there was no internal power struggle.

Barcelona to curb cannabis clubs City Hall is considering setting limits on what it calls the "proliferation" of cannabis clubs, where members buy and consume marijuana. There are no official figures, but the municipal authorities say they have counted around 200 clubs, most of them located in the city centre. Just two years ago, there were only 40 cannabis clubs in Catalonia. Officials now plan to take a closer look at these associations to see whether they were legally set up and the check their stated goals. Preliminary investigations show that in most cases the clubs claim to make a therapeutic use of the drug. Where this is found not to be the case, the authorities will temporarily seal them off. This situation - similar to that in California, where the therapeutic use of marijuana is allowed - has produced a long series of lawsuits because of a lack of legislation on the recreational drug. In

Catalonia, this was highlighted early last year when the Rasquera municipal council announced it intended to cede land to the Barcelona Cannabis Self-consumption Association so it could grow marijuana for its members. The association had offered the town council â‚Ź1.3 million over the course of two years, which would have more than settled the council's debts. Felip Puig, who was the Catalan commissioner for home affairs at the time, said he would have to check with the justice department and the public prosecutor to find out if the Rasquera council could lawfully do so. A court finally cancelled the agreement between the council and the association. In Barcelona, only judges can determine whether an association complies with its own statutes. Lawyers have said the clubs will accept new rules and regulations, as long as their rights are respected.

Tax obligations for foreign property owners in Spain

If you own a property in Spain, you pay the IBI, (rates) yearly to the Town Hall. However, there is also another tax obligation for all foreigners who own a property in Spain. Both residents and nonresident property owners are obliged by Law to make a Tax Declaration annually to the Spanish Tax Authorities (Hacienda).

If you are a property owner and you file your declaration with the Spanish Tax Office in May/June each year, declaring all your word wide assets and income, (your annual income tax return). You are a Fiscal Resident and therefore are contributing to the Spanish system.

However, if you own a property and do not make a declaration to the Spanish Tax Office as a Fiscal Resident, then you

would be considered a Non Resident, and therefore must file a declaration before the end of December each year to pay your Tax to the Spanish Government. This tax is called Deem Tax and is to cover the benefits received by being a property owner in Spain, i.e. use of; roads, airports, museums, and other national infrastructure.

As the Tax office is aware of all foreigners who own property in Spain, anyone who does not make their annual Income Tax Return in May/June will be assumed to be a Non Resident, and therefore liable to pay their taxes before the end of December. In other words

ALL foreign property owners must make an annual declaration, either for Income Tax or Deem Tax.

Recently, the Tax Office has been sending out letters to foreign property owners who have not made a declaration, asking them to present a Deem Tax Declarations, (Mod 210), within 10 days, for the years 2010 and 2011.

A Tax Declaration 210 form, must be completed for every owner,, for example; a husband and wife owning 50% each of a property must BOTH file a declaration, each independently, for their share in the property.

The Tax Authorities in Spain expect you to be aware of the taxes that you should pay, and they expect you to present Annual Tax Declarations before the deadlines each year. They have no obligation to inform the tax payers of their duties and they can legally claim up to 4 years back taxes, with interest and fines from anyone who does not comply with the tax law. www.marbellasolicitors.com Contact us to arrange a FREE, NO OBLIGATION, APPOINTMENT, Tel:952 901 225 or email us on denise@manilvasolicitors.c om

Director Pedro Almodovar attacked the Spanish government after accepting an honorary prize at the European Film Awards in Berlin last Saturday. The 64-year-old filmmaker said the Partido Popular government called is "deaf and insensitive" to the country's problems and blasted its "awful cultural policy".

Government funding for the arts has been drastically reduced in recent years and Almodovar called 2013 "the worst year" for the film industry.

After he roundly condemned the government's austerity measures, the Volver director saluted "the resistance of the citizens who are victims of this government".

He gave the parties five working days to file their

More than 20,000 jobseekers applying for just 400 jobs at a new Ikea megastore in Alfarar, Valencia, overwhelmed the local office's computer servers. the outlet is not due to open until next summer but Ikea started accepting applications on Monday. "Our server collapsed. It wasn't able to handle that many applications," said Ikea Spain's rodrigo Sanchez. "We never expected to have so many applications in such a short time." the company brought in a new server, which also collapsed hours later. Sanchez said the number of applicants in the first two days was quadruple what the company has seen during any of their previous 15 store openings in Spain. there are 4.8 million people out of work in Spain and any decent job offer attracts thousands of hopeful people.

An ardent supporter of the Socialist Party, Almodovar attacks the Spain's conservative government at the slightest opportunity.

A team of Spanish paleontologists and German ancient DNA experts has managed to extract DNA from a 400,000-year-old hominid fossil found during the 1990s at the Atapuerca site in Burgos - the oldest such sequence ever found. After comparing it with the genome of other relatives of Homo sapiens, the scientists found the DNA to be closer not to that of Neanderthals, as was expected because of their shared characteristics, but to that of a more obscure population so far only known to have lived in Siberia just 40,000 years ago, the Denisovans. the team sequenced the mitochondrial DNA of the fossil, which comes from the structures that power cells and is only inherited along the maternal line. until now DNA this old had only been obtained from animals, specifically a 700,000-year-old horse found in canada.

Thai PM rejects call for his resignation

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has rejected protesters' demands that she resign before February's snap elections.

Demonstrators have been calling for her to resign and be replaced with a "people's prime minister". Ms Yingluck won the last polls in 2011, but protesters say ex-leader Thaksin Shinawatra, who is Ms Yingluck's brother, remains in charge.

Mr Thaksin is in selfimposed exile after he was overthrown in a military army coup in 2006 and convicted of corruption. At a press conference on

Tuesday, Ms Yingluck urged protesters to stop and "use the electoral system to choose who will become the next government." "I must do my duty as caretaker prime minister according to the constitution," she said, adding: "I have retreated as far as I can give me some fairness."

On Monday, around 150,000 protesters had converged around the government headquarters

in what they had described as a final push to unseat the government. There were no reports of violence but violent clashes that broke out during last week's demonstrations left five people dead.

Later that day, Ms Yingluck announced that she would dissolve parliament and call elections, now set for February 2nd, but protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban,

a former opposition politician, said the demonstrations would continue: "We will select a people's prime minister and set up a government of the people and a people's assembly to replace parliament."

On Tuesday the streets were quiet and the number of protesters had diminished significantly. However, a small core of protesters remained outside government buildings.

Venezuelan opposition disappointed Venezuela's governing United Socialist Party (PSUV) won the greatest share of the vote in Sunday's local elections, the National Electoral Council announced on Monday. With most votes counted, the PSUV has 49% while the opposition has about 43%. The

opposition were ahead in most of the larger cities, including the capital, Caracas, while the governing party won in rural areas.

The elections have been seen as a key test for President Nicolas Maduro who became president in

April, after the death from cancer of Hugo Chavez.

The opposition's failure to win a majority of the votes cast or significantly increase the number of municipalities under its control from the 46 won in the 2008 local elections was a disappointment to

its leader Capriles.

Sunday's elections coincided with the anniversary of Hugo Chavez's famous speech in which he announced that his cancer had returned and named Maduro as his preferred successor.

Bogota mayor sacked

The mayor of Colombia's capital, Bogota, gustavo Petro, has been sacked and banned from holding office for 15 years following allegations of mismanagement of the rubbish collection system. The Prosecution said Mr Petro, a leading leftist seen as a potential presidential candidate in next year's elections, had violated the principles of the free market and endangered people's health, the prosecution said. On his Facebook page, Mr Petro wrote that he had been condemned for having "de-privatised a public service". In 2012, rubbish was not collected for days after waste management changes. Shortly after the decision was announced by Inspector-general Alejandro Ordonez, protesters started gathering at Bogota's central Bolivar Square. Mr Ordonez's decision was criticised by Justice Minister Alfonso gomez Mendez. who told reporters: "We have to revise the constitutional norm that allows the destitution of an official chosen by popular vote." Mr Petro's term started in 2012 and was supposed to end in 2016.

Ancient stolen statue recovered

egyptian police have recovered an ancient statue of Tutankhamun's sister, stolen during unrest in August. The limestone figurine believed to be of Ankhesamon was among hundreds of artefacts taken from the museum in Mallawi, amid the unrest following the overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi. The upheavals in egypt since the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak in 2011 have helped looters target museums and archaeological sites for ancient treasures to sell on the black market. Officials said the 13-inch statue was in a good condition but needed some restoration work, after which it would go on display in a new museum devoted to the family of Tutankhamun's father, the Pharaoh Akhenaten, said Ahmed Sharaf, head of egypt's museum department. He said the family of Akhenaten, who ruled ancient egypt around 1,500 BC, would now be reunited. Antiquities Minister Mohamed Ibrahim told reporters that about 1,050 artefacts had been stolen at that time, of which about 800 had been recovered.

Bus death triggers riot

Police arrested 27 South Asian suspects after hundreds of people took part in a riot sparked by the death of an Indian national on Sunday. Trouble started after the 33-year-old man was knocked down by a private bus in a district known as Little India. About 400 foreign workers took to the streets, hurling railings at police and torching police cars and an ambulance.

At least 18 people were hurt, most of them police officers, before the violence was brought under control. Police commissioner ng Joo Hee said it was the first rioting in Singapore in more than 30 years. He condemned it as "intolerable, wanton violence". "It is not the Singapore way," he added. The outbreak of public disorder is rare in strictly-governed Singapore. The wealthy city-state depends heavily on foreign workers, with migrant labourers from South Asia dominating sectors like construction. Many congregate in Little India on Sundays to shop, drink and socialise.

WTO agrees global trade deal

Ministers from 159 countries reached a deal aimed at boosting global trade at a meeting in Bali, Indonesia last week. The World Trade Organization's first comprehensive agreement involves an effort to simplify the procedures for doing business across borders. There will also be improved duty-free access for goods sold by the world's poorest countries. The deal, which could add about $1tn to world trade, gives developing nations more scope to increase farm subsidies. "For the first time in our history, the WTO has truly delivered," said WTO chief Roberto Azevedo, as the organisation reached its first comprehensive agreement since it was founded in 1995. "This time the entire membership came together. We have put the 'world' back in World Trade Organization," he said. UK Prime Minister David Cameron said the "historic" agreement could be a "lifeline" for the world's poorest people, as well as benefiting British businesses to the tune of more than £600 million.

Talks to start on Ukraine crisis Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych announced on Monday that he would support an initiative described as a "nationwide roundtable" with three former presidents to try to defuse the political crisis which began when Ukraine decided not to sign an EU free-trade deal.

Protesters remain encamped in a central square in the capital Kiev on Monday, while security forces cleared some activists from government buildings. Police were also seen forcing protesters out of two streets where, according to the Interior Ministry, they were blocking access to administrative buildings. Some barricades and tents were also removed from at least two sites.

Meanwhile, the opposition Fatherland party's headquarters was raided by security forces and computer servers were removed. Fatherland is the party led by former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who was jailed in 2011 over a controversial gas contract with Russia. Protesters are demanding her release. The stand-off follows weeks of unrest. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton will also be in Kiev to hold talks with government officials, opposition activists and civil society groups "to support a way out of the political crisis", her office said on Monday. The European Commission said the EU's offer of an association agreement

with Ukraine remains on the table, provided Ukraine meets the conditions - and they cannot be renegotiated. Prime Minister Tymoshenko

Many of the protesters suspect Russia's President Vladimir Putin of trying to model a new Russian-led customs union on the Soviet Union. So far, only Belarus and Kazakhstan have joined it.

Mid-East governments sign water deal Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority have signed a water sharing pact aimed at one day replenishing the rapidly drying Dead Sea by building a pipeline to carry brine from a desalination plant at the Red Sea to the Dead Sea, while providing drinking water to the region. The Dead Sea is dropping by as much as 3.3ft a year as the River

Jordan is depleted for use in irrigation and many fear it dry up entirely by 2050. The Dead Sea is so rich in salt and other minerals that humans float naturally on the surface. The area around the sea has an established tourism and health industry because of the water's unique properties. The agreement was signed on Monday at the headquarters of the World Bank in Washington DC.

The project is expected to cost ÂŁ152m-ÂŁ244m.

Environmental advocacy group Friends of the Earth Middle East has called for an environmental study of how the brine from the desalination plant should be treated before the project begins in earnest, arguing it is unclear how brine from the Red Sea water will affect the Dead Sea's ecosystem.

The deputies have been charged with conspiracy, obstruction and giving false statements, officials said. The FBI had been investigating allegations of excessive force and misconduct at county jails

since 2011. The inquiry uncovered a "wide scope of criminal conduct", the federal official in charge of the case said.

Pay rise for British MPs Hospital brings howls of protest weekend care THE thorny old problem of how much politicians should be paid for their services is the subject of a considerable amount of debate in Britain at the moment because a £7,600 pay rise has been suggested for our Members of Parliament. While this is not good news politically at a time of austerity and there have been howls of protest, it has resulted in a wider debate because the rise has been proposed by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, and not by the Members of Parliament themselves. There is a growing chorus of opinion that MPs

are underpaid for the level of responsibility they have and the demands of their jobs, which often require a great deal of travel to and from constituencies to Westminster and the administration of two offices. The increase would boost an MP’s salary to £74,000 from 2015, about the amount a deputy headmaster would receive, yet MPs oversee such things as national defence and security, the health service and almost everything else that allows the country to function, subject to what some would see as interference from Europe. Because MPs handed

Firefighters flown to remote island

FIRE fighters have to be ready for everything and a call-out in Northumberland caused them a headache when it was discovered the fire was in a cottage on an island.

An RAF helicopter was called in because the causeway to Holy Island was flooded by the tide.

Nine fire fighters and a member of an ambulance crew were flown to the scene.

Islanders had managed to prevent the fire spreading to nearby properties and a man who entered the property to rescue a dog was checked for smoke inhalation.

the decision on salaries over to an independent body there is no way that they can actually prevent the rise, although there is likely to be a squeeze on MPs’ pensions which could help the public purse. There does seem to be agreement that the salaries received by MPs should keep pace and be fair so that politicians without an income outside Parliament do not suffer and individuals who might be able to make a worthwhile contribution are not discouraged from standing for election by the prospect of a poor salary.

THERE is a push for adequate seven-day working in Britain’s National Health Service following a report which suggests patients who have routine operations on a Friday are more likely to die than those operated on earlier in the week.

Those recovering fare worse and patients are more likely to be readmitted. A lack of senior staff working on wards at weekends has

been highlighted.

The report suggests fewer patients are properly diagnosed because the number of scans carried out at weekends is lower and they consequently have to wait longer for adequate treatment. The report does suggest that there has been some improvement in weekend care but that much more needs to be done.

Storm damage

BRITAIN suffered severe storms along its eastern coast and in the south recently, resulting in four deaths and homes slipping into the sea as a result of a storm surge and subsidence. Two people were killed by falling trees and a couple died in a gas explosion, which may have been caused by a falling tree. Transport was severely disrupted and 625,000 homes were left without power. A lorry driver died when his vehicle was blown over.

Flight delays

THERE is nothing wrong with technological progress provided systems do not go wrong, and a case in point was the telephone system at the National Air Traffic Service centre in Hampshire. Problems with the system brought misery to thousands of airline passengers because hundreds of flights across the UK and Ireland had to be cancelled and while the problems were resolved there were knock on delays.

Technicians explained that the system has more than a million lines of software and it is the biggest system of its kind in Europe. The problems occurred when operators found they could not switch from the night-time operating system over to the day system.

5 points clear

ARSENAL went five points clear at the top English soccer’s Premier League when they drew 1-1 with Everton, but some of the other clubs did not do so well.

Manchester United slipped again losing by the odd goal against Newcastle and Chelsea surprisingly went down 3-2 at Stoke.

Liverpool still look good with Luis Suarez in fine form and new manager Tony Pulis appears to have breathed some life into Crystal Palace who managed back to back wins with a 2-0 victory over Cardiff.

“Smoke and Lee Rigby mirrors” says killers trial Miliband starts The Government says it has outlined how it will cut household energy bills by £50 - as Ed Miliband dismissed the plan as "smoke and mirrors".

The Labour leader said in a recent speech that the "cosy deal" reached with the 'big six' power firms will still see bills going up this winter, saying ministers do not "get" the cost-of-living crisis. However, one member of the public said: “Yeah, and they did such a great job when they were in power. It’s because of them that we’re all in this mess anyway!”

Chancellor George Osborne announced full details of how the Government will achieve its pledge of reducing energy bills by £50 a year in his Autumn Statement last Thursday. £12 of the figure will come in the form of a government rebate. A reduction of between £30 and £35 will be achieved through cutting green levies, ministers say, while voluntary action by energy companies to cut network costs will mean a one-off £5 saving. Some of the large energy companies released statements in the wake of the Government's announcement, detailing how they will contribute to savings.

The energy issue has dominated the political agenda since Mr. Miliband promised to freeze prices for 20 months if he wins the next general election. Mr. Miliband said: "A lot of people think that David Cameron and George Osborne are trying to catch up with One Nation Labour on the cost-ofliving crisis: from pay-day lending to energy bills. But the truth is they are struggling to catch up with the British people who live at the sharp end of an economy where the link between the wealth of our nation and family finances has been broken. That is the cost-of-living crisis that is happening in our country today," adding: "A real price freeze and action

to reset the market to stop them overcharging again in the future. It's right that the debate in Britain is now about the cost-ofliving crisis. Political leaders need to understand the new challenges our country faces. That is the test of this Government this week. All the signs are that they simply don't get it."

But Mr Osborne has insisted that families will benefit from the plan. He told BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "There is going to be an average of £50 off people's bills. We are absolutely insistent that this is going to be brought in."

Mr Cameron and Nick Clegg confirmed on Sunday the plan to reduce the burden on consumers by cutting the green taxes, which add £112 to each bill. The cost of the Energy Company Obligation Scheme, which funds energy efficiency measures for low-income households and makes up the vast majority of the environmental levies, will be halved under the plan.

Around £12 of the £50 savings to bills will come from a reworking of the Warm Home Discount in a £300m deal. The remainder will come by switching the funding for energy measures to general taxation.

A £1,000 grant for energy efficiency measures for anyone buying a new home, which will be funded by a fresh crackdown on tax avoiders, will be included in the plan.

Michael Adebolajo, 28, one of the men accused of killing off duty Fusilier Lee Rigby by running him down with a car then hacking him to death in broad daylight near Woolwich barracks, London, on May 22nd this year, has said at his trial at the Old Bailey that he considers himself to be a soldier fighting a war. He handed a note to an eyewitness to the events in Woolwich stating that the events happened purely against the foreign policy of the UK Government. He said he asked people at the scene at Woolwich Barracks to film him to "make it clear to everybody why the soldier lost his life" and "how this can be avoided in the future". Adebolajo went on to tell the court of his love for Al Qaeda and that he considers members of the terrorist group to be his “brothers in Islam” even though he has never met any of them. Asked directly for his defence to the charge of murder, Adebolajo told the jury: "I am a soldier. I am a soldier of Allah and I understand that some people might not recognise this because we do not wear fatigues and we don't go to the Brecon Beacons to train. But we are still soldiers."

He and Michael Adebowale, 22, are accused of murdering the soldier. He told the court that he converted to Islam during his first year at the University of Greenwich but had been brought up by his parents as a Christian and had grown frustrated by visits to church with them. He added that he held former Prime Minister Tony Blair responsible for the death

of one of his friends in Iraq who had become a soldier. He said that he had changed his name to Mujahid (meaning “fighter”) in 2002 or 2003 and thought that he may end up killing a soldier and told the jury that before Fusilier Rigby was killed, he and Mr Adebowale prayed to Allah that they would attack a soldier and not a civilian. He said: "The life of this one soldier might save the lives of many, many people, not just from Muslim lands but from this country." The soldier's relatives sat feet away as the defendant spoke to the court. Mr Adebolajo and his co-defendant Mr Adebowale deny murdering Fusilier Rigby, attempting to murder a police officer and conspiracy to murder. The trial continues.

Malaga city is now one of the most important cultural centres in Spain and fast becoming known the world over as tourists spread the word about its Museums. The city's cultural transformation began in 2003 with the opening of the Centre of Contemporary Art (CAC). Located on Calle Alemania, it now has works by Tracey Emin, Anish Kapoor, William Kentridge and the Chapman Brothers, among others. Its current exhibition includes a selection of works on video by Bruce Nauman. The Museo Picasso opened to great fanfare on October 8th, 2003, in the Buenavista Palace, Calle San Agustin 10. Since then more than three and a half visitors have enjoyed the works donated by the painter's grandson Bernard and his daughter-in-law Christine.

The Fundacion PicassoMuseo Casa Natal opened at the house where Picasso was born on Plaza de la Merced 15 in 1989 and received hundreds of Picasso-related objects since then. Also on show until March 2nd next year is an exhibition called "Falla/Picasso: Le Tricorne"

The Museo Carmen Thyssen at Calle Compañía, 10 opened three years ago and is quickly becoming one of the city's most important museums. In addition to its permanent collection of paintings, it has an exhibition of jewellery made in the 19th century by Mariano Fortuny, Joaquín Sorolla and Ricard Canals, among others. The exhibitions of works by Courbet, Van Gogh, Monet and Léger called "Del paisaje naturalista a las vanguardias" is on show until April 20th.

The Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares. located at Pasillo de Santa Isabel 10, is almost a time machine, featuring popular arts and customs that go back several centuries, which includes tools and demonstrations of how to prepare and bread and a variety of wines, as well as jewellery, drinking vessels, typical costumes, among many other aspects of life in Malaga city and province over the centuries.

Museo del Vino

The Museo del Vino opened in 2008 to give the wine-making sector a space to trace the masking of wine from its earliest stages. Located in the 18th century Palacio de Biedmas (Plz. de los Viñeros 1), it has more than 400 articles from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including bottles, posters and other wine-related articles.

Museo Vidrio y Cristal

Located in an 18th century house at Plazuela del Santísimo Cristo de la Sangre 2, this glass and crystal museum opened in 2009 thanks to a private collector who recreated the history of humankind through 2,000 works in glass. Art works and furniture are also on show, recreating how life was lived during the past three centuries. Currently on show is a Nativity featuring 70 Lladró porcelain figures.

Museo Automovilistico

Located in the old Tabacalera building (Avd. Sor Teresa Prat 15), the Museo Automovilístico de Málaga opened in September 2010 when the City Council persuaded the Portuguese collector, João Manuel Magalhaes, to part with some of his cars, which include classical models by Hispano Suiza,

Bugatti, Delage, Packard, Auburn, Rolls Royce, Bentley or Ferrari. There is also a section dedicated to the fashion of different epochs divided into into several collections: «Belle Epoque», «Art decó», «Dolce Vita», «Tuning», «Tradición inglesa» and «Coches de ensueño». A must for people who love everything on four wheels.

MUPAM

The Museo del Patrimonio Municipal is in a modern building created by the architect Federico Orellana Ortega, consisting of three modular cubes joined by invisible walks. Located on the Subida a la Coracha, it was opened in 2007 to exhibit municipal art. The permanent collection is housed in three rooms - 15th to 18th centuries, masters of the 19th century and 20th century pieces.

What if I am left alone in Spain? For many expats, the move to Spain is a big step, often as our ‘plan for retirement’. The intention is to get away from the cold, damp weather of the UK (and other Northern European countries) and enjoy the warm, relaxed atmosphere here in Spain.

Our friends and relatives are very envious when they spend time with us here and then hop back on the short flight back home in anticipation of being met with damp, dreary weather. However, us hardened expats know that living in the sun is not always what it appears to be on the surface. Navigating the Spanish system can be (and usually is) a nightmare for most expats, even if you are fortunate enough to have an understanding of the language (a working knowledge let’s say) fighting your corner can be difficult and stressful.

So what happens when we lose our soul mate? The one person you know you can depend upon to support you through difficult times – I’m talking about what happens if your partner dies. It’s bad enough losing someone we love, but there are a number of issues on the financial side of things that would need to be attended to. For example:

1. Arranging a funeral in Spain (Which undertaker, burial, cremation or repatriation to the UK, do I want my partner to be cremated within 24 hours or do I want time to digest what’s happened and to have a longer period to arrange things as we do in the UK? What are my options and how much will it cost, is there someone who speaks English who can help me?) 2. Have you made a Spanish Will? (If a foreign

owner of property in Spain dies without making a Will, in Spain or anywhere, whether resident or not, there is no dispute - his property will be disposed of in accordance with Spanish inheritance rules.) Beware - Spanish law requires a parent to leave two-thirds of his estate to his children, even bypassing the surviving spouse.

3. What about our bank accounts? (Individual banks have their own rules, in the case of an account in the sole name of the deceased, typically you are able to pay money in to cover bills but not able to withdraw, for a joint account the deceased’s half of the balance at date of death is frozen.) 4. What about Inheritance Tax? (In Spain, even spouse to spouse is not tax free. The inheritance tax system is

also very different to the UK. Each beneficiary pays tax on their inheritance dependent upon their age, how closely related they are to the deceased, what their existing wealth is, where they live, etc, etc) Ownership of assets cannot be transferred and property is not able to be sold to pay the tax - the Notary must first feel confident that any tax due has been paid.

5. What if I was not married to my deceased partner? (In short, the inheritance tax payable is at least double as you are deemed to be unrelated – the amount payable varies from 100% extra to 140% extra)

6. What if the house was in my deceased partners name only? (Taking all of the above into consideration, you could be left homeless!)

7. What if I want to return to the UK to be with family? (Any financial planning we do on behalf of clients includes the flexibility to handle any changes to your life and will stand good wherever you want to live)

8. My partner has always sorted all our finances out and I wouldn’t even know where to start! (Our clients often say this to us when we first meet them)

What can be done?

We can put you in a position of being ‘death ready’ – I know, what an awful thought, but as Benjamin Franklin said, "The only things certain in life are death and taxes." None of us can side step death I’m afraid, but we can make sure that our loved ones are not ‘left alone’ in terms of

navigating the Spanish system and paying unnecessary tax in the event of our death. Speed Financial Solutions can help you ensure that your partner needs to make only one phone call – TO US.

Let us take the worry out of your life in Spain. Take a look at our website (www.speedfinancialsoluti ons.com) and contact us (Tel 951 315 271 or 951 318 529) – we are happy to discuss your own situation in more detail. One of our Advisers will be happy to come and spend some time with you either in your home or at our office to explain and go through your options, so do call to make an appointment.

A busy week for the Church of Scotland congregation On Thursday 5th the members and friends met for the annual Christmas lunch. It was held as usual in Restaurant Don Jesus, in Fuengirola. As always it was a very happy occasion.

On Sunday 8th members and friends travelled by coach to Gibraltar to join their sister church for their annual service of carols and readings, an annual special occasion for the church. The Military Band of the regiment in Gibraltar at that time and the lone piper, who closes the service, both add to the

wonderful atmosphere.

This service is recorded and broadcast on Christmas Day by Gibraltar Radio. The glass of wine and mince pie supplied by the congregation of St Andrew's is always very welcome, before they head back over the border for home.

The Church in Fuengirola holds its service every Sunday in the Lux Mundi Ecumenical Centre, Calle Nueva at 10.30 am. All are very welcome.

A change of tack

A

s Martin Delfin commented earlier today when he sent his column, the news is so dry and nothing seems to be exciting. So I thought I'd go off on a complete tangent this week and write about little (and big) beings close to my heart - cats and dogs and just about every other kind of animal, bird and plant on the planet.

W

hen I'm not glued to my computer screen digging up the dirt about my least favourite politicians, I work one morning a week at the Animals in Distress shop in Alhaurin el Grande and last Saturday I was rewarded amply for what can often be a hectic and messy morning.

A

bout half an hour before closing, a lady brought in a box containing five puppies that she'd found "by the bins". A.I.D. founder Jan normally can't accept animals brought into the shop without warning but the lady had rang ahead and it was obviously an emergency. The poor little things could hardly have been 24 hours old and they were as cold as ice. So Jan, volunteer Trilla and myself ended up with puppies stuffed inside our sweaters and jackets, trying to warm them up enough to ensure their survival while Jan started to ring her collaborators who are willing to cope with very small puppies.

T

hen a minor miracle happened - the lady who is only too happy to take puppies that need bottle-feeding off Jan's hands walked into the shop unexpectedly five minutes later. She immediately took stock of the situation, but said she had to dash off to Mercadona across the road to do her weekly shopping. She was back ten minutes later, the puppies were duly packed back into the box with clean blankets and off they went to their new home.

J

an popped round later that afternoon and saw them snuggled up in a box front of a fire, their little bellies full of warm milk. However, their urine was still cold which meant the warmth hadn't seeped through their bodies, which meant they were still on the critical list, so to speak. By Monday afternoon, they were still alive, which meant their chances of survival were increasing. The lady who took them - who wishes to remain anonymous - finds homes for pups like these in Holland and Germany - and within three months they could be winging their way to permanent homes with people who

ow I didn't end up with the puppy I was warming up I don't know. But I know how time-consuming it is to bottle feed a pup or a kitten so I let my commonsense get the better of my broody instincts.

A

.I.D. has managed to home around 350 dogs so far this year, many of them abroad. It may not sound a lot but unfortunately there are too many abandoned animals, and not enough people willing to adopt them. But people like Jan slog on to try to give a decent life for as many cats, dogs, birds, guinea pigs, exotic pets like iguanas and snakes, chickens, horses, sheep and goats - to mention just a few - as they can.

I

t's an expensive process - the animals must get their shots, be chipped and in perfect health before they can go off to their new homes. Jan also provides food and veterinary attention for the animals she manages to foster out. I know that every penny Jan makes in her shop goes to the vet down the road and to another one in Coin. And when necessary, the money comes out of her own pocket.

T

he government of Mariano Rajoy may be finally keeping its long-awaited promise to curtail illegal donations to political parties. The Cabinet is expected to present a bill to Parliament before the end of the year prohibiting businesses and corporations from giving contributions to political parties. This is the prime minister’s answer to the massive fallout that began to rain down at the beginning of the year when Spaniards first learned that the government’s own Partido Popular (PP) had received millions of euros in fat donations from some of the country’s biggest firms, including builders who eventually won contracts with local and regional administrations headed by the PP. The allegations surfaced in the secret ledgers kept by former party treasurer Luis Bárcenas, who also detailed in his accounting books how some of that money was used to pay bonuses to top officials, including Rajoy and PP secretary general María Dolores de Cospedal.

S

o please think of all those poor creatures out there - attend the fundraising events, because every euro counts; foster a cat or dog if you can, or even better still give a home to a poor creature that has been abandoned or abused by some miserable human being.

I

Postscript

s Nelson Mandela about to work a miracle from beyond the grave - Barak Obama shook Raul Castro's hand at the memorial ceremony in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning. It would be nice of these two got together and lifted the economic blockade which has made life so miserable for the Cuban people - innocent victims who've suffered the most.

N

evertheless, there appears to be a lot of obvious loopholes in the draft bill’s wording. Political parties in Spain will still be able to receive contributions from individuals but not businesses. In other words, a rich industrialist can make a donation under his name but not on his firm’s behalf. Under the current law, individual donations cannot exceed €100,000 and there doesn’t seem to be any lowering of the contribution cap in this new bill. In 2007, the PP and the Socialists agreed to a pact in which this amount was allowed but at the same time prohibited donations coming from anonymous sources.

H

igh Court Judge Pablo Ruz is currently investigating some two dozen prominent Spanish businessmen whose names appear in Bárcenas’ ledgers after the United Left (IU) coalition filed a complaint with the magistrate. Ruz is trying to determine if these powerful movers and shakers got contracts from PP regional governments in exchange for their cash contributions.

M

y contribution is to help her in the shop. When I told her I couldn't possibly foster, she said she wouldn't ask me - "You get too involved with your animals". You have to be able to live with a cat or dog for several weeks - even months - and not have a nervous breakdown when the animal finds a new home.

Rajoy administration to come out with the bill is beyond anyone’s guess. Some sources believe that the PP still wanted to collect as much money as possible as it gears up for next May’s European Parliament elections before the new law kicks in. But it could just be that Rajoy and other PP officials never had it in their hearts to keep the pledges they made to Spaniards concerning stricter controls on party finances.

A

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy

s the prime minister desperately avoided answering questions about Bárcenas and the inner workings of the PP, he promised nearly 10 months ago stricter measures to ensure that this entire embarrassing episode is never repeated. Yet it took him all this time to draft legislation aimed at not only his own Partido Popular but for all Spanish parties, which no doubt also get questionable funding from outside sources. Surprisingly, Uniò Democràctica of Catalonia ranks second after the PP in receiving the most contributions. In 2011, Uniò reported to the Court of Auditors that it had received some €600,000. The PP reported €1.3 million from firms while the Socialists said they received €350,000. Why it took so long for the

The proposed bill is a lukewarm effort by Rajoy to satisfy Spaniards’ demands to clean up his own party. Lowering the contribution caps, establishing severe penalties for both party officials and persons who violate the law, setting up an independent election commission that registers all the money coming in to the parties with the power to file criminal charges, and making available public listings on the internet of all contributors to the parties are just a few basic requirements that should be included to give the proposed law sharp teeth.

Community News Cubs and Beavers visit Mijas Fire Station Boys and girls from Fuengirola Scout Group enjoyed an exciting visit to Mijas Fire Station.

The group of 40 Beavers and Cubs divided into two groups to look around the station. First stop for the Cub Scouts was a film showing them how to react in a smoke filled building and how to find out if a fire is behind a closed door. They were also shown some of the causes of fire in the home such as overloaded electric sockets and unattended frying pans, clothes in front of unguarded fires etc. Meanwhile the Beaver Scouts investigated the recreation and sleeping areas in the station and tried out some of the equipment used by the firemen to improve their fitness. The equipment

room provided an interesting display of uniforms and helmets and the children found out the significance of the different colours of helmets worn by the firemen. The main attraction of the fire engines and equipment was enjoyed by both groups as they learned about the high pressure hoses and ladders used for different situations. The cutting equipment often needed to rescue people from cars crushed in road accidents and the indestructible flashing lights used to mark off an area were items of equipment that were completely new to most of the children.

No visit to a fire station could be complete without a few flashing lights and sirens and the children covered their ears as they were rewarded with a short burst of sound from the main fire engine.

One lucky child was celebrating his 7th birthday and shared

cakes, made by his mother, among the group of children, Firemen and adult helpers. The visit was the fourth in a series of visits to local places of interest and contributed to work the Beavers and Cubs have been doing to earn their Community Challenge or Local Knowledge Badge. Other visits have been to the Roman Ruins in Fuengirola, the Skate Park and a walk around places of interest in Fuengirola. Since September 19 new members have joined the group and for the first time the group now operates a waiting list as many of the sections are at maximum numbers. To find out more about the adventurous and fun opportunities provided for boys and girls by Fuengirola Scout group go to our website at www.fuengirolascouts.co m and ensure that your child is added to their waiting list.

Spiders, murder & mayhem

A great night out was had by all who went along to Los Arcos last weekend to watch TAPAS present Inspector Drake and The Black Widow. The cast played their parts to the max with Andy Buszby (AKA Constable Plod) being the best Baldrick impression any of us had heard for a very long time. With bodies piling up by the minute and Constable Plod’s pet black widow spider on the loose it was anybody’s guess as to who was going to be the next victim! The actors, some of whom were playing two or three parts kept everybody on tenterhooks. Would Inspector Drake fall foul of the wandering pet spider or would he solve the case in the end. All worked out well however, with PC Plod’s nether regions missing out on a very worrying cactus down the trousers! TAPAS is an extremely good group of community players that work hard to give us theatre at its very best. Well done to all!

Lunch

On Tuesday 3rd December a ladies lunch was held at Tamisa Golf Hotel, organised by Margaret who runs the spa there. A talk was given by Myra Azzopardi Swainson from Citizens Advice Bureau Spain and Alex Bell (formally of LuLu and the Lovers) entertained the diners. The ladies were asked to bring items of food for families who are struggling during the crisis. The response was amazing. €85 was also raised by a raffle to buy further produce. The food along with gifts for children was handed over to St Andrew’s Chaplaincy Inland who will distribute the food and gifts amongst local families. A huge thank you is owed to Margaret and all those who contributed so that families will enjoy a slightly happier Christmas.

Something worth celebrating

There was certainly quite a bit of seasonal cheer in the air on Saturday night when Linda, formerly of Perfect White Teeath in the Tamisa Golf Hotel and John announced their engagement at a party at the Restaurante Valparaiso. A sumptuous meal had been planned for their guests, most of whom thought they were there to celebrate Christmas, plus dancing to work off some of the calories afterwards.

Linda, as always, looked lovely wearing a full length blue gown and John, resplendent in a rather nice suit made it through the evening in style even after suffering from the horrible gastric flu that’s been doing the rounds.

The happy couple sealed their engagement with the help of their guests, a fabulous silver cake with a diamante dragonfly and red roses and, of course, a kiss!

Age Care shopping trip CAP continues to the News

WEDNESDAY, December 11th 2013

Zpvs!pvumppl!po!uif!Xpsme

Scientists believe that a daily trip to the shops could help you live longer (Daily Telegraph April 2011). Age Care volunteers regularly take clients to the local shops or to coffee mornings. However, with Christmas on the horizon, Age Care organised a special shopping trip for some of its more vulnerable clients, most of whom are over 80. Julie Grenfell, Welfare Leader Calahonda, explained that these clients have mobility problems, some are wheelchair bound and wouldn't be able to get to the shops alone. "We booked Tom and his coach & a trailer to take the wheelchairs; it was really convenient, parking close to Miramar Shopping Centre, Dunnes and Iceland." Daphne Howells said

"It's been great; I managed to get an electric blanket in time for the cold weather. I just wish I'd brought my trolley! Pat Underhill was accompanied by her granddaughter Rachel who was visiting and who was helping her choose some new clothes for Christmas. Jean Davies (83) who has mobility problems and unable to

walk far said "Without Age Care I wouldn't be able to get out and about". Annie Callaghan, volunteer, was on hand to transport some direct to their homes. Age Care will be organising similar trips in the future. For more information, please contact George on 952 933 409, email: info@agecarecosta.org, visit our website: www.agecarecosta.org or follow us on Facebook. Age Care Association is a charitable association entirely run by volunteers whose aim is to help the local older English speaking community who may not always be able to help themselves.

At their weekly coffee morning on Wednesday 4 December, organizer Leila Bourquin, together with Cathy Braithwaite from the Anglican Church, was delighted to receive a cheque for €500 on behalf of Caritas from President Jill Cawley. This organization has been working tirelessly to help the disadvantaged in our area from going hungry, and CAP members have been donating foodstuffs each week throughout 2013. With donations to Cudeca, Aspandem and Triple A already made, CAP club members have raised and distributed more than €3,000 during 2013. CAP is a friendly, social organisation based between San Pedro de Alcántara and Estepona, meeting at 11 a.m. each Wednesday morning for coffee at Restaurante El Caserio, Parque Antena, next to garden centre Agro Jardin; many weeks there is a speaker. Weekly activities include

bridge, whist and bowls, and members have recently started a choir. Other events and excursions include regular shopping trips to Gibraltar; visits to the theatre and exhibitions; lunches and dinners at different venues along the coast. A full programme of events is published in their free quarterly magazine, and regularly updated online. They also raise money for local charities, mainly Alzheimer’s, Aprona, Aspandem and

Cudeca. New members are welcome – annual membership is only €15. Why not go along for coffee? You will be assured of a warm welcome. For more information contact Jill Cawley on 952 818471, or visit www.clubcharityandpleasu re.wordpress.com

Behind the scenes at The Salon Varietes Last Friday, my friend Jackie Rice and I, were lucky enough to have been invited along to the Salon Varietes in Fuengirola for a look round. Graham Cherry was our host and, after meeting in the foyer we went through the curtains and into the main theatre area. I had always wondered why there was no airconditioning in the Salon to keep the theatre cool for the summer months and warm in the winter but it was explained to us that, apart from the expense, the electricity supply to the

realised how small the “wings” area is and what a great feat it is to get everybody on and off stage when they should be. Then it was behind the stage to look at the dressing rooms first. I have to say, I was amazed at how the Salon manages to put on such great professional shows when I realised that, in some cases, there were 6 artistes sharing one small dressing room! Next we were upstairs and there before us, all beautifully catalogued and kept were the props and costumes. Sian is the wardrobe mistress who keeps everything in tip top condition and makes a lot of the costumes you see on the stage herself. Just imagine having to make seven dwarf costumes to go with Snow White, and we learnt all about the difficulty of finding matching pairs of white boxer shorts for their recent production of The

This explained, one can appreciate how difficult it is for them to make us all comfortable, which they do admirably throughout the year. Up onto the stage we went and were introduced to singer John Gale and his wife who were preparing for his “Step Into Christmas” show last weekend. John explained the lighting and how much it costs the theatre if a bulb blows. You can’t just pop along to the nearest Chinese shop and pick one up for a few centimos, these are incredibly expensive lights that give the viewing public the clear and concise look to the productions that we all know and love. Full Monty... they could find all shades of blue, grey and patterns but, white ones in the autumn at a reasonable price? No chance! It took ages to find them but a tenacious Sian of course came up trumps in the end. This is something none of us think of when we’re there “out front” watching the plays, musicals and shows they put on. Then afterwards, of course, they all have to be washed or cleaned and made ready for their next outing. Sian has worked in theatre for years, her husband having been a professional actor, and it certainly shows - I think this lady could find anything from somewhere if she had to - she’s incredible, and she’s really nice with it! The next stop was lighting and sound that was awash with computers for that thoroughly West End high style of production that we end up with. Sarah in the Box Office showed us their fabulous new computer programme that means that you now don’t have to make the trip all the way to the theatre to book your tickets and seats as they are all now fully up and running online. We were treated to lunch of fish and chips (they are famous for their chips at The Salon...) on the terrace, after which we sat for a while watching the rehearsals for their up and coming production of the pantomime Aladdin. After our visit we can understand all the hard work from the booking of your ticket, through rehearsals, lighting, wardrobe and all the other little ¨behind the scenes at The Salon¨ things that go on and what a marvellous job they all do. Don’t miss the new productions, they really are that good! Call 952 474 542 for information and tickets.

Director: Billy Bob Thornton Starring: Tippi Hedren, Kevin Bacon, Ray Stevenson "Jayne Mansfield's Car" takes place in the South and has a fine, essentially literary appreciation for the region and its people. But where the earlier film displayed the careful architecture of a wellwrought novel, this new one, with its sprawling array of characters and anecdotal, ramshackle structure, feels more like

The hobbiT: The DesolaTion of smaug Directed by Peter Jackson Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom

Here comes the second in the Peter Jackson trilogy in which the slight and much loved book The Hobbit is turned into three blockbuster movies, designed to delight fans and horrify purists. And inevitably it has split the critics in the same way that the first outing did...for some it’s a thrilling and exciting fantasy.

For others not only does it over-inflate the story and drag out passing references in the book into many minutes of movie, it continues to frustrate by introducing characters from the Lord of the Rings, who never appeared in The Hobbit. But it’s simple.

If you enjoyed the first part of the saga then this will enthral. Hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Freeman), wizard Gandalf (McKellen) and 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard

Bilbo is learning that he is courageous, and is determined to fight the magical temptations of the ring he found in the first film. During a breathtaking journey he and his gang are chased by orcs and captured by giant spiders

and along the way meet the warrior elves led by Legolas (Bloom) and Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly). They may have escaped from LOTR into The Hobbit but there is no denying that their adventures add a sense of excitement.

It’s an edge of your seat ride with plenty of action and for those hooked on the story, the thrilling climax will leave fans eagerly awaiting the final instalment.

There will be a solution, there always is eventually. Doubts and fears could be rising to cloud the situation do not allow yourself to be dragged down by this discomfort, instead focus on the areas that still need some work and attention from you. Once you do this a solution will spring up from the depths. By the weekend insights and flashes of brilliance occur making you feel far more positive. What you need right now are open and honest exchanges of communication, you are definitely not interested in a relationship where there is no depth of feeling attached to it. Stability and trust are vital elements right now. Finances could involve some hard decision making but approach these matters with extreme caution as there is an indication of a possible deception here.

There is a polarity going on here, on the one hand you know quite clearly the path that is best for you and will feel anchored to that point, but on the other hand you could be tempted by something elusive that is working on distracting your attention. Double check your communications and do not assume you know another’s motive. If you have been under the weather then this week your energy levels will begin to climb. If you do not feel sure as to what path you need to walk down then relax Cancer, the big picture will eventually become clear and you will have a solid sense of where to go next. A lot can happen in 24 hours for instance and nothing at all can happen in 48, time is a strange thing. This is not only an active period for you but also a reflective one, so put things on the back burner for a while and in a flash they will be answered. This week is all about being true to you and living that truth in the world. You could find that you are tested at every turn to make sure that you make the very best out of all that is real. You cannot change what is behind you but you do have the ability to influence the direction your life now takes. This stark clarity brings with it many gifts – fueling a stronger sense of purpose.

Friends and professional contacts aid you and provide you with the support and guidance that you require. This will make you feel secure especially when wandering around within new territories. You could be prone to emotional outbursts of honesty; however, you will feel so much lighter for getting things off your chest. By early next week you will be able to talk to a loved one and create a sense of joint cooperation.

Feelings of financial security are on their way due to events that bring inspirational news. Make sure that all communications with others are clear and to the point as this will annihilate any misunderstandings. There are still some big decisions to be made on the timing of things and because you are well aware of what you want to achieve you will be able to observe the September 23rd - appropriate moment for this to happen. There is a final realisation that all your efforts have not been in vain. You have reached a key junction that shows you some sort of validation or encouragement that promotes you to take another step forward. Watch your tendency to take risks at the weekend as you could be tempted to gamble on items that could drain your purse. Legal issues that are pending can be successfully resolved this week.

You could feel as though you are carrying a weight around with you this week, however, it is there to encourage you to keep your feet on the ground. This energy is perfect if directed towards setting up a secure foundation for you and your loved ones. Use this time to be with family and friends and you will find a lot of strength in your roots. This will serve as a reminder of all that has meaning and value to you. Keep it simple. Plans can go array and complex arrangements are likely to fall flat. If it looks too complicated then there are more errors that can occur, however, if it is simple then the chances are it will work out. Lean on your strengths this week and one of them is sustaining something that others walk away from. Through your delicate understanding of the importance of time you are able to take things step by step to reach success. If others are there to assist you then ask for their advice, it will lessen the burden and they could come up with some ideas to solve a situation that does not appear to have a resolution in sight. If only we all had foresight then many problems could be avoided. Keep your emotional boundaries in place when dealing with persons of the past as well as your financial integrity; it will serve you well to keep on the straight and narrow path. A creative project you have been working on is near completion and you will be putting the finishing touches on it. This in itself will show a strong message as to what you believe to be right. Others will not be on the same page as you but this time you will feel compelled to make your point and be really clear on your opinion. Trust your gut instincts when it comes to your vocation and the direction that is calling you.

Turkey and cranberry pies are a clever and tasty way of using up some of that left over Christmas turkey. They're made with bacon for added flavour

Turkey and Cranberry Pies Ingredients:

(Serves:

• 350g plain flour • 175g unsalted butter, chilled and cubed • 3 tbsp cranberry Juice, such as Ocean Spray • 150g smoked back bacon, chopped • 100g cooked turkey meat, diced • 85g mature cheddar, diced

9)

• 1 handful thyme, leaves picked and chopped • 1 egg, beaten

Directions 1. Place the flour and butter into a food processor and whizz to fine breadcrumbs. Add 4 -5 tbsp of cold water and mix to form a soft dough. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Roll out two thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface. Cut out nine 10cm circles and use to line the base and sides of nine holes in a muffin tin. Place a tsp of cranberry juice in the base of each pastry case. 3. Sauté the bacon in a dry non-stick frying pan for 4-5 minutes until cooked through. Reduce the heat, then stir in the turkey and cheese. Add the thyme, holding a bit back for topping the

pies. Spoon into the pastry cases. 4. Roll out the remaining pastry onto a lightly floured surface and cut out nine 6cm circles to make the pie tops. Brush one side with cold water then press watered side down on top of the pie mixture. Seal the edges by pinching the edges of the case and top together. Brush using the egg, season and scatter the remaining thyme. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden. 5. Once cooked remove the pies from the tins by running a sharp knife around the edge of each pie. Prep time: 25 min, plus chilling Cooking time: 35 min

POCO A POCO

SPANISH By Valerie Mitchell

LESSON

LIBRA

...you don’t have to be a chef!

Well, it's hard to believe that this is the last Poco a poco of 2013. The next one is due on 2nd January, 2014. So, I thought we would do a little quiz as we have often done at this time of year. See if you can work out the meaning of the following proverbs or expressions. Regular readers have an advantage as some have been mentioned in Poco a poco throughout the year. As many of you may be spending more than their usual budget over the festive season, let's begin with a few sayings regarding money and then move on to some related idioms. 1. 3. 5. 7.

Poderoso caballero es Don Dinero. Los precios están por las nubes. Estar en Belén. Quedarse para vestir santos.

2. 4. 6. 8.

Me costó un ojo de la cara. Pablo está en las nubes. Desnudar un santo para vestir otro. En un santiamén.

We saw number (1) a few weeks ago when we were talking about the verb Poder. It means Money makes the world go around. (literally Mr. Money is a powerful gentleman) Number (2) means - It cost me an eye from my face. We would say - It cost me an arm and a leg. Number (3) means that prices are high - por las nubes literally means in the clouds. However for our next idiom (4) a tiny change makes for a completely different meaning. By changing por las nubes to en las nubes, we are saying that Pablo has his head in the clouds. Number (5) literally means to be in Bethlehem but also means to have one's head in the clouds. Remember too that the traditional crib scene with Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus et al is also called a Belén and any town worth it's salt will have one or more worthy of a visit. Number (6) means to undress one saint to dress another and refers to the Spanish tradition of dressing up their saints for processions. In English we would say Rob Peter to pay Paul. And relating to this, number (7) means to be left to dress the saints and refers to spinsters who are on the shelf and will spend their days dressing the statues of the saints. Number (8) again has religious roots and if you do something in a santiamén (Holy Amen) it means to do it very quickly. Well, hope you managed to work out some of the meanings. Feliz Navidad a todos Merry Christmas to all Y Prospero Año Nuevo And a prosperous New Year. Hasta la próxima - Until next time. Valerie

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Sue,

Do I really need to drink eight glasses of water every day for a good complexion? Kelly, Benalmadena Dear Kelly,

Not everyone needs to gulp down eight glasses of water but must drink at least four times a day.

Water is vital to keep your body and skin hydrated but

it doesn't actually effect the condition of the outermost layer of skin. That's why we moisturizers to get an external boost of hydration.

Drinking water helps to flush out toxins and carry oxygen and essential nutrients to the body's cells. Carry a water bottle with you so you can sip throughout the day-and drink two glasses of water for every cup of coffee or alcoholic drink you have.

Dear Sue,

Are facials just for problem skins-or a nice indulgence? Alicia, Mijas Dear Alicia,

Facials are a soothing pampering way of maintaining glowing, healthy skin at every age, and are very much part of an ideal beauty routine. A combination of vitamins and antioxidants will help hydrate, smooth and even out your complexion, as well as boost it's radiance.

Sensitive skin and problem skin will also benefit from the generous infusion of vitamins A, C and E and skin-saving antioxidants. Facials such as peeling ones are beneficial as a course and all facials can be tailored to

suit your skin's needs, so treat yourself as often as you can. Dear Calvin,

How do I choose a good quality wig,as chemo made my hair fall out. Helen

Dear Helen,

One of the most common questions when choosing a wig is should I go for human hair or synthetic.in my opinion neither is better, just different.

Todays synthetic wigs can look and feel very natural, and are a lot lower in price than human hair. With synthetic wigs the style you coose is baked in'whick means even when you wash it it requires very

Cough campaign boosts lung cancer diagnosis Figures show that a campaign urging people with a persistent cough to see their doctor has led to a "dramatic rise" in lung cancer diagnoses. The campaign, which ran in England last year, said people should go to their GP if they had had a cough for more than three weeks.

An estimated 700 extra patients were diagnosed with lung cancer around the time of the campaign. Of these, around 400 more patients had their lung cancer picked up at an early stage, improving their chances of survival. Surgery, which improves the chances of surviving the disease, was offered to 300 more patients than in 2011. Lung cancer accounts for more than a fifth of all deaths from cancer. A spokesman for Cancer Research UK, said: "It is

great news that this campaign has raised awareness of lung cancer symptoms among those most at risk of the disease. In many cases it won't be cancer, but it is better to be sure and, if it is cancer, to detect it earlier rather than later." A spokesman for the British Lung Foundation, said the initial results from the campaign were "encouraging, but added: "Naturally, we won't know for sure until subsequent years whether this impact will be a lasting one. But these very positive early indications seem to confirm that such awareness campaigns can make real tangible differences to people's lives."

It is hoped the campaign will run again next year.

little styling, but bear in mind the wig cannot be coloured or changed with curling tongs or straightners.

Human hair wigs are more durable than synthetic, and can be washed, dried, coloured, perm ed just like your own hair. As hopefully your chemo was a temporary situation I would advise you go for the synthetic option. Dear Calvin,

I am going to a Christmas party and want lots of curls and they need to last ,what is my best way of achieving this? Sue

Dear Sue,

There are several ways of creating curls.

Curling tongs, styling wands, straightners, heated rollers, but I find that actually setting your hair on

good old fashioned rollers is still the best way to create long lasting curls.if you have time it is best to roller your hair when your hair is wet ,either heat dry it or leave to dry in naturally,or set your hair from dry and apply hairspray over the top for firmer setting, and again leave the rollers in for as long as you can.

As in all cases everyones hair is different and some hair types just do not hold curl but hopefully these tips will help you to achieve what you want. Enjoy your party!!

Doubt cast on vitamin D's role French researchers have cast doubt on the value of vitamin D supplements to protect against diseases such as cancers, diabetes and dementia, after reviewing data from 290 prospective observational studies and 172 randomised trials looking at the effects of vitamin D levels on health outcomes, excluding bone health, up to December 2012. A large number of the observational studies suggested that there were benefits from high vitamin D - that it could reduce the risk of cardiovascular events by up to 58%, diabetes by up to 38% and colorectal cancer by up to 33%. Recent evidence has shown it may also have a role to play in preventing non-bone-related diseases such as Parkinson's, dementia, cancers and inflammatory diseases. But the results of the clinical trials - where participants were given vitamin D supplements -

found no reduction in risk, even in people who started out with low vitamin D levels. The researchers said more clinical trials on non-skeletal diseases are needed. Vitamin D supplements are recommended for certain groups.

In the UK, vitamin D supplements are recommended for groups at higher risk of deficiency, including all pregnant and breastfeeding women, children under five years old, people aged over 65, and people at risk of not getting enough exposure to sunlight. People with dark skin and people who wear full-body coverings, as well as pale-skinned people are also known to be at higher risk. A spokesman for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said the review had little to contribute to the problem in the UK because it excluded the measurement of bone health.

Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip

It is the time of year that, even when things are tough, there are still some good people out there

‘tis the season to be jolly nice to people

… and here are two acts of kindness from ordinary people who have character and a very good heart Father-of-three Dickon Johnstone, 37, set himself up outside a coffee shop in Aylesbury town centre’s Market Square for all the world knew as a beggar. Most people just ignored him but, for those who bothered to read his cardboard, hand-made sign, Dickon was not begging at all… he was actually giving away money! He ended up giving away £36 in 30 minutes once shoppers realised what he was doing. Dickon’s placard said: “I have a job, a home, a car, and good health', adding: 'Would YOU like a couple of pounds for a coffee?” To anybody who said “Yes” to him, he handed them £2. Dickon said that the first person

he gave his £2 to, went in and had a coffee then gave him the £2 back. He filmed the event and posted it on YouTube capturing the expressions of not only those that avoided him but also the 18 people who took him up on his offer while some that spoke to him wouldn’t take his money saying that they “had enough already”. Kind hearted Dickon has since donated another £36 to the Children In Need charity. Another act of kindness turned out well earlier in the year for homeless man Billy Ray Harris of Kansas City who sleeps under a bridge and spends his days in a square in the city. Bride-to-be Sarah Darling mistakenly dropped her

engagement ring into a cup belonging to Mr. Harris and when she went back to the scene the following day, fearing it was lost, she was overjoyed when he gave it straight back to her. Mr Harris said that he had “a little Devil” on his shoulder telling him to keep the ring but he decided against pawning it for much needed cash. Ms Darling’s fiancé Bill Krejci was so impressed, saying that the act of kindeness was “a miracle” in this day and age, that he set up a global internet fundraising page that pulled in $150,000 in less than a fortnight from all over the world, enough for Mr. Harris to get himself off the streets and buy a threebedroom house in the city.

One donor left a message on the page saying: "An amazing man who deserves amazing things.. I hope things go well for you :) You are a true inspiration around the world!!" Another pledge, from Pat Gowen, read: "Thank you Mr. Harris for your honesty. You have restored my faith in people. God Bless you." He told local television station KCTV: "What I actually feel is, "What is the world coming to when a person returns something that doesn't belong to him and all this happens?".' He added: "My grandfather was a reverend. He raised me from the time I was six months old and, thank the good Lord, it's a blessing, but I do still have some character."

“Q” to play Freddie Freddie Mercury died in 1991 following complications from AIDS and there is now to be a biopic of his life following the bands early years right up to their appearance on Live Aid in 1985.with Dexter Fletcher (Sunshine On Leith and Wild Bill) sitting in the directors chair. The lead part of the iconic Queen singer will be played by none other than Ben Whishaw, better known as Q in the recent Bond “Skyfall” film. Sacha Baron Cohen was set to play the rôle but left the production earlier this year after disagreements with the band over the direction the film was to take with Brian May saying that Cohen “just wasn’t right for the part.”

Peter Morgan has been chosen to write the script while Robert de Niro’s Tribeca Productions will have a hand in making it.

Political Violence - Left and Right?. “Hype and moral diseases“ Ms Muriel Pilkington refers under this title, published on November 27th, to an article in ABC by Esperanza Aguirre, entitled “A Moral Disease ” respecting the left-wing agit-prop indoctrinating, strengthening the Left’s belief respecting a moral superiority contrasted to ditto standard on the Right. Ms Aguirre has misjudged the reality. It is an ideological based politically implicated deceit or double-dealing. (Ethics/moral imply individuals.)

But in order to effectively meet this propaganda it is a sine qua non, generally to have a rational epistemological based understanding of what it means to be a human being and living in a society with other equal citizens (In a letter printed in The News on 16th October this year I outlined my opinion regarding this theme). Ms Pilkington ends her article: “It’s a moral disease when the police, media and the authorities fall like a ton of bricks on right-wing delinquents but look for excuses when they claim to be left-wingers.”

Christina Smachylo The press service of the MP of Ukraine from Svoboda party, Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for European Integration Oleh Pankevych (for more information: www.pankevych.info) is writing to you on the occasion of current social and political situation in Ukraine. On November 28-29 in Vilnius, at the Eastern Partnership summit, the President of Ukraine didn't sign the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union, despite European ambitions of most of Ukrainians. a political decision of the President and the government has caused a number of protest actions in our country, which often can be covered unreliably in media. As the political opposition party “Svoboda” represents aspirations of Ukrainians to national rebirth and is strategically aimed at the European course of Ukraine, we are ready to give an objective and unbiased information both on the internal political situation in Ukraine and on its activity on the international scene. Taking into account the importance of support and understanding of the EU

I have for years read Ms Pilkington’s articles and I definitely have got the impression that she intellectually, ideologically has moved, also indicated by herself, from the Left to a liberal Right. My question therefore is: How do you, Ms Pilkington, explain an ideologically based political theory that justifies presenting those so called Right-wing extremists as belonging on the right end of an imagined line illustrating the political spectre of a society?

by email and world community for Ukraine in the context of current political and social situation in our country, we would like to suggest you cooperation in regard to providing first-hand and true information on events in Ukraine. Maybe, you could share with us contacts of journalists who are also interested in the media cooperation with Ukraine. We ask you to inform us about your opinion on such a networking. written by Christina Smachylo, Representative of MP Press Service

Betty Thoms La Cala I just love this time of year! I have been to a couple of dinners and some Charity parties and last weekend, went to The Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuengirola for the Step Into Christmas show you had advertised last week. I had nothing to do so I have to admit I was a bit of a last minute booker but, unlike other times I have booked late at other venues, I wasn’t stuck behind a pillar or anywhere I couldn’t see. Th e booking was attended to efficiently and in a pleasant manner and, although this was my first time of going to this particular theatre, I shall

certainly be going again. I could say that I am getting on a bit (I’m 85 this coming birthday) but I feel young and am glad that I have moved to Spain where I can get out and about with a crowd of people that come in all ages, shapes and sizes. In the UK, probably to a great extent because of the weather, I was beginning to feel isolated and, as my children have all grown up and have their own families, although they try hard, it never quite seemd enough. Now I have a great circle of friend and aquaintances and, look out Spain, I’ve arrived!

Comment By Ken Campbell

Jupiter, the King Planet. J

Have you noticed the very bright ‘Star’ rising in the east at about 8.30? It’s not a star; it is the planet Jupiter. upiter is the biggest planet in the Solar System; it is 2 ½ times bigger than all the other planets combined. It lies further away than Mars at 365 million miles away and on 4th January Jupiter will be at its closest point to the Earth. It is the third brightest object in the night sky, only the Moon and Venus outshine it.

J

upiter is not a rocky planet like the Earth, instead it is what’s known as a gas giant. It is nothing more than giant ball of mainly hydrogen gas with a little helium thrown in, and despite its huge size it rotates very quickly. A day on Jupiter lasts just short of 10 hours. This rapid spinning has caused Jupiter to bulge at the equator and flatten at the poles.

W

hen we talk about the surface of Jupiter we’re referring to the tops of the cloud cover, the bits we can actually see, it doesn’t have a surface in the conventional term. So when you look at Jupiter through even a small telescope or binoculars you will notice several bands crossing the surface running east to west. The bands are different shades of brown, yellow and white in colour with two distinct north and south bands that stand out more clearly.

T

he bands are constantly changing and images from the likes of the Hubble Space Telescope have shown them to be a writhing mass constantly being whipped up by the colossal winds that sweep through them.

O

f course you can’t talk about Jupiter without mentioning ‘The Great Red Spot’! This was first noticed by Galileo back in 1610. No one is absolutely sure what the GRS is. It is thought to be a storm or anti-cyclone that has been raging since at least 1610, but why it is there and what is keeping it alive is still a mystery. It is located in the southern band of Jupiter and is about 3 times the size of the Earth. It rotates in an anti-clockwise direction but always remains in its same location travelling around the planet within the southern band. It really is a mystery, and why is it red?

I

t was also Galileo who first spotted the 4 largest of Jupiter’s 67 Moons. Collectively they are known as the Galilean moons, individually they are known as Callisto, Ganymede, Io and Europa. Ganymede is the largest Moon in the Solar System and is even bigger than the planet Mercury. It was because of the discovery of these moons

that Galileo put forward his theory that the Earth was not the centre of the Solar System but just another planet going around the Sun. This theory caused an outrage at the time and earned Galileo a lifetime of imprisonment by the Catholic Church.

T

hese moons can easily be seen even with binoculars and they orbit around Jupiter much faster than our Moon orbits the Earth. If you catch them at the right time you will see them eclipsing each other and disappearing in front of or behind Jupiter. If you observe on one night you may see two of them on either side of the planet, the next night they will have changed positions, they really do put on a spectacular show!

T

here has been a lot of interest shown in one of the Moons, Europa. Europa is completely covered in a blanket of ice covering the whole of the Moon almost like an eggshell. Below the ice there is an ocean of liquid water being kept from freezing possibly by thermal vents similar to the fumeroles under the Earth’s oceans. Around the Earth’s fumeroles, in the most inhospitable of environments, there exists a whole community of life. What then is the possibility that under the ice of Europa, there is also life?

N

ASA is planning a trip in the not too distant future to send a probe to Europa. This probe will land on the ice and then slowly melt its way down to the ocean below. There it will turn into a submarine and begin exploring the undersea world searching for life. My money is on them finding it.

T H

ake your binoculars and go have a look at Jupiter, you won’t be disappointed. appy Stargazing

LÍNEA DIRECTA REPORTS ON DRIVING IN WINTER

Línea Directa is one of the key players in the fight to reduce the number of accidents on our roads. For almost 20 years, it has promoted research into accident rates in order to encourage safe driving habits. Due to the risks involved with driving in winter months, it now offers advice on how to act in adverse weather conditions.

With respect to the car:

1. Check your car, especially the mechanical components. Pay attention to brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and break fluid, antifreeze and oil levels. 2. Don’t forget to check the condition of your tyres including the spare wheel, checking pressure, tread and the grooves of each tyre, which must have a minimum depth of 1.6mm.

3. Always take a reflective jacket, two warning triangles and a torch with you. Also ensure that your mobile is charged in case you need to use it in an emergency.

With respect to driving: 1. If you often drive in snow, consider buying winter tyres. In any case, avoid any sudden movements and, as a general rule, do not overtake. Take special care with snow which has turned into ice and always drive at low speeds. 2. If it is foggy or raining, adapt your speed and distance from the vehicle ahead to the weather conditions. Do not brake suddenly to avoid skidding.

3. Aim the vehicle’s heating system at the windows to prevent them from fogging up as a result of humidity. 4. When overtaking, reaching crossroads, leaving tunnels and in open spaces, be careful with any sudden gusts of wind, which might lead to a loss of steering and the vehicle overturning.

F1 to award double Simply repairs & servicing to all makes and models at points for unbeatable prices final race 609 709 466 from 2014

Formula 1 is to award double points at the final race of the season from 2014 in an attempt to heighten interest in the world championship. The plan is one of a number of changes next season, along with the adoption of a cost cap details of which are still to be finalised - from 2015. Drivers will also choose a race number for the duration of their career. Governing body the FIA also announced the adoption of a new fivesecond penalty for minor infringements. But it will be the introduction of double points and a cost cap that will provoke most interest. The move reduces the possibility of a championship being settled before the final race by increasing the number of points available to a driver from 25 to 50.

Sunny Triples at Miraflores This week saw the running of Miraflores Bowls Club annual drawn triples competition. This year the competition attracted a good entry with nearly all the Club's members participating and a number of mouth-watering matches in store, many of which turned out to be very closely fought. Semi-finals day arrived and we had the form team of the tournament so far; Graham Rowley, Tony Gatter & Alan Abel playing Craig Lewis, Dave Robson & Marie Hurst which promised to be an intriguing match. In the other semifinal we had John Carr, Ann Rowley & Pam Kinane against Denis Hanley, Frank Tofts & Lyn Robson. In the first match the scores were tied at 15-15 after 12 ends and 19-19 after 16 ends. In the 17th end Craig was holding shot until Graham sprung the jack to pick up 4 shots. In the final end Craig was holding 2 shots and needing to promote a bowl and follow it to draw the match and force the extra end, but narrowly missed to lose the match 23-19. The second match was also a close run affair, but John's team eventually

Malaga's 2nd Half Collapse C.O.G.S. play puts Schuster in the dock at Santa Clara Malaga 3-3 Osasuna

It was the Copa del Rey for Malaga last weekend who were paired with La Liga side Osasuna, as the

league took a break. The prize for the winner of the two legs was a prospective tie against Real Madrid. It was Malaga who started well and looked confident going forward and it was no surprise to see Malaga in front. Defender Sergio Sanchez heading in well from a Morales corner on 31 minutes. That lead was doubled when Antunes curled in a stunning free kick from outside the box on 38 minutes. And just two minutes after the

break it was 3-0, and it was Coin boy Juanmi steering the ball home whilst fending off a challenge in the box. Ten minutes later Osasuna got a goal back, Torres firing home from well outside the box and within four minutes it was two for the away side as Manuel headed home after a mistake by Antunes. A red card for Loe should have given Malaga an advantage but it was three with 12 minutes to

go as Armenteros fired in after more bad Malaga defending. Malaga also finished with ten men after Camacho was shown a straight red card for a lunge from behind on Loties. The result leaves Malaga with it all to do in the second leg back in Pampalona. Back to league action on Saturday as Getafe travel to La Rosaleda with a 10pm kick off.

A very cold and windy day it was by all accounts. I didn’t play myself as I pulled my shoulder on the driving range the day before. The scores were as follows. Nearest the pin on hole 6 Dave Haworth. Nearest the pin in two shots on

Report by Scott Forbes

Match-Fixing Probe Leads To Six Arrests

Six people have now been arrested in connection with football match-fixing allegations. Police launched an investigation after accusations that a player rigged a Championship game for cash. The National Crime Agency (NCA) confirmed that it had acted on information passed on by the Sun on Sunday newspaper. The tabloid reported that an undercover investigator met ex-

Portsmouth player Sam Sodje, who allegedly said he could arrange for footballers in the Championship to get themselves a yellow card in return for tens of thousands of pounds. The 34-year-old also claimed he could rig Premier League games and even said he was preparing to fix matches at next year's World Cup in Brazil, the newspaper reported. It was also reported that Oldham Athletic

player Cristian Montano failed to get a yellow card in return for money in a match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on October 22 and offered to take part in another rigging incident. Oldham said in a statement: "Oldham Athletic Football Club has been made aware of the incident and allegation surrounding one of its players, Cristian Montano. The club will commence an immediate internal investigation to establish

Wayne’s Poker Tips

This week I am going to talk about Omaha which is my preferred game in poker and would advise any new player to learn this format, it is the same as Holdem except each player is dealt 4 hole cards instead of 2 and you must use 3 from the board and 2 from your hole cards to complete your 5 card hand.

How do you play AA/KK in Omaha as many inexperienced players will lose with these hands. Unlike Holdem in Omaha AA/KK is not a great starting hand as is any pair because 2 pair and trips are very common, straights and flushes win regularly so you need to hit a full house to be confident.

The best starting hand is AA/KK suited because we have 2 pair and 2 nut flush draws, with this hand you would raise but because of the nature of the game it is normally played pot limit so multi way pots are often seen.

With your 4 holes cards you only want to enter a pot when you can make 2 or 3 starting hands, here is an example; Ah/Qh/Ks/10s . This is a very good hand to see a flop with as we have the Broadway draw AKQJ10, the nut heart flush draw and the 2nd best spade draw.

When the the flop comes we do need to see some draws to bet out if the board is dry slow down, Omaha is not a good game for bluffs however lets say your on the button and there is a flush draw on the flop and you want to represent this, we need to bet the flop and should the draw hit the turn we can fire again to rep the flush. What we have to remember in Omaha every street brings a new draw, we may have a set on the

flop and yes we have to bet it to defend it, we must remember that a pair and a set at Omaha is a weak so do not start putting to many chips in the pot if there is draws such as straights and flushes. If you bet the flop with a set and you get called with a draw on the board by all means be aggressive but if you think they have you beat fold!

If you have any questions regarding poker or would like to add to anything in this column please Email wayne@bolsa-fiesta.com

Nelson Mandela Championship brought forward

The European Tour's Nelson Mandela Championship will start a day earlier to avoid a clash with the anti-apartheid icon's state funeral on 15 December. Mandela, South Africa's first black president, died aged 95 last Thursday. The tournament will start on Wednesday, 11 December, and finish on Saturday, 14 December, in Durban, South Africa. Golf around the world Hong Kong

Malaga's own Miguel Angel Jimenez broke his own record as the European Tour's oldest winner with victory in a play-off at the Hong Kong Open.

Jimenez, who is 50 on 5th January, retained the title that first saw him break the Tour record 12 months ago. It was his 20th European win and first since breaking a leg skiing last year. It was

also Jimenez's seventh European Tour success on Asian soil, extending another of his landmarks, and the 168th Spanish success on the European Tour. He shot a final-day 66 to tie at 12 under with Welshman Stuart Manley and Prom Meesawat of

Thailand, and won with a birdie at the first extra hole. Jimenez will move back into the world top 40 after a record-equalling fourth Hong Kong Open title, and said he was confident of securing a place in the European Ryder Cup team to face the United States at Gleneagles next year. "If I play the way I am playing this week I will be in the Ryder Cup team," he vowed. "There is one more year to go and this victory will help a lot. You never know, I would love to be part of the team again." Should he qualify, Jimenez - who made the most recent of his four appearances in the competition in 2010 would set another record. He would become the oldest player to appear in the Ryder Cup, eclipsing Ted Ray who was 50 years, two months and five days old at the inaugural contest in 1927.

California

Zach Johnson beat world number one Tiger Woods in a play-off to win

the World Challenge in California. In a remarkable conclusion, Johnson found water with his approach at the 18th before holing from the drop zone.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell, a twotime winner of the competition, was highestplaced European on five under in the 18-man event.

Fans surrounding the 18th waved streams of South African flags in late afternoon sunshine on a day dedicated in the country to prayer and reflection following the death of former President Nelson Mandela. FOOTBALL Violence as Brazil’s season ends

The Brazilian football league season ended on Sunday with a violent brawl that seriously injured three people. A match was stopped for an hour after a fight broke out between supporters of Vasco da Gama and Atletico Paranaense. TV images showed seemingly unconscious men being kicked in the head despite appeals from football players. A helicopter landed on the pitch to transport an injured man to hospital. The shockingly violent scenes, broadcast live to millions of homes on Sunday afternoon, are bound to raise questions about Brazil's ability to keep fans safe during next year's World Cup.
