Ukraine opposition loses confidence vote

Thousands of Ukrainian protesters remained outside parliament in Kiev, as the opposition held a vote of no confidence in the government on Tuesday. The opposition had not expected to win the vote, but wanted to maintain pressure on the government. Mass protests were sparked by the government's decision not to sign an association deal with the EU last week. Hundreds of people put up tents on Independence Square on Sunday night, after a mass rally that drew hundreds of thousands, amid calls for a general strike. The headquarters of the cabinet has been blockaded, with government employees

unable to reach work. There were clashes near the presidential building, with demonstrators firing flares and riot police using tear gas, batons and stun grenades. TV footage appeared to show officers beating reporters. The main opposition leaders condemned the violence, saying it was the work of "provocateurs". There were also clashes on Sunday as Kiev protesters tried to topple a statue of Lenin. As

WORLD ICKHAM’S

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

It’s that time They say that “Christmas comes but once a year” and, every year that once seems to be around for a lot longer than the previous one. We have already started attending all manner of parties, dinners and get togethers and we are very lucky to be invited to them and generally have a great time. Last weekend wasn’t strictly Christmas. It was PAD animal charity’s 17th birthday. The dinner was lovely and yes, I’m sure I must have worked off some of that lovely crêpe starter and the pudding by dancing. No doubt when my scales scream at me to get off them in January I will regret it but, for now, what the heck! There are all sorts of things to go along and enjoy and a lot of them mean you will be helping out the various charities as you wine, dine and dance so, it would simply be churlish and unhelpful to causes in great need of funds right now not to attend and enjoy, wouldn’t it? Well, that’s my excuse anyway! This weekend I’m going to the Salon Varietes to have a look round backstage which should be absolutely fascinating. I’m taking a friend along who loves the theatre so much she could happily live in one so I’ll tell you about it next week. Then in the evening I’m off to see Inspector Drake and The Black Widow followed the following evening by an engagement party for two people who deserve all the luck in the world for a long and happy life together. I may even tell you who they are next week if they’re not determined to keep a very low profile. In the meantime let all of us at The News just wish them all the best for the future and have a great party at the weekend. Sunday, at time of going to press, I have nothing on so will be having a lie-in, getting up to a leisurely breakfast, walking the dogs then vegging in front of the telly.... Bliss!!

Another scandal in botched fresco parish

Ukraine opposition loses confidence vote Later on Monday, the US disputed Mr Azarov's interpretation. "We certainly don't consider peaceful demonstrations coup attempts," a White House spokesman said, adding that while violence by the authorities against demonstrators on Saturday had been "unacceptable", the police had in general been more restrained since. Meanwhile, President Yanukovych urged police and demonstrators to observe the law.

"Any bad peace is better than a good war," Mr Yanukovych said in a TV interview reported by his own website – his first comments on Sunday's violence. Mr Yanukovych has warned that the rallies should only be peaceful after violence at the weekend, and said he was going ahead with a planned visit to China.

In another development, on Monday Mr Yanukovych asked the European Commission to allow him to send a delegation for talks on "some aspects" of the EU association agreement that Ukraine had been expected to sign, officials in Brussels said. Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso agreed to the request, but stressed the Commission was ready to discuss implementation of those accords already initialled, "but not to reopen any kind

of negotiations".

President Vladimir Putin of neighbouring Russia said events in Ukraine seemed "more like a rampage than a revolution," and blamed "outside actors" for the protests, which he said were an attempt to unsettle Ukraine's "legitimate" rulers. Meanwhile, the newspaper Ukrainska Pravda reported that police reinforcements are being sent to Kiev.

Spain lower on corruption list Transparency International's latest global survey of international perceptions of official corruption has put Spain down six points to 40th place as a result of several recent scandals.

Only Syria, in the middle of a civil war, lost more points in the survey. Corruption in Spain was highlighted this year when the former treasurer of Spain's Partido Popular told a judge that he had

channelled cash donations from construction firms into politicians' pockets, and he was found to have almost €50 million in a Swiss bank account. The king's son-in-law was also charged this year with embezzling millions in public funds.

remained the European Union state with the highest perceived level of corruption, although it rose up the list to 80th from 94th with a score of 40 points. The list of 177 countries puts Denmark and New Zealand top with 91 out of 100.

The UK is ranked in 14th place, up from 17 last year, with a score of 76 points out of 100.

The parish priest in charge of the church at Borja, Aragon, was arrested last week for allegedly pocketing church funds of around €210,000. Father Florencio Garces, 70, was detained by Guardia Civil on suspicion of misappropriating parish funds following a five month investigation. He is also facing charges of money laundering and sexual abuse. The town hit the headlines last year after local artist Celia Gimenez, 83, attempted to restore a 100 year old fresco of Christ – transforming the Ecce Homo fresco into Ecce Mono (Monkey). networking sites and drew some 70,000 tourists within the first year, bringing much needed custom for local businesses. Church authorities began charging a €1 entrance fee to those wishing to view the painting, funds that were destined for a local charitable care home with 60 residents. The priest was released without bail after appearing before an investigating magistrate on Sunday and an investigation opened into the alleged crimes. Another five people were also arrested on related charges. Police said they could not disclose whether the alleged economic crimes were directly connected to entrance fees collected at the Sanctuary of Mercy Church, the home of the disfigured fresco. Residents of the town, with a population of 5,000, came out to show support for their parish priest, saying he "is a lovely man who has cared for this community for more than 20 years”. National News Judges, lawyers and police against law

Referring to the Citizens Safety Law which is expected to be passed in Parliament early next year, a spokesman for the Judges for Democracy Association, Joaquim Bosch has said: "It would seem that the government does not trust the judges. It wants to assume the ability of sanctioning forms of conduct in an extremely discretionary manner, using vague legal concepts, which can lead to very authoritarian action."

Judge Francisco de Vitoria of the Foro Judicial said: "We are a peaceful society, there is no social revolt, and yet in a display of inexplicable fear the

government necessary."

thinks

it

Álvaro García of the Progressive Union of Attorneys said the bill "is more dangerous than people might think, and a brutal weapon for immediate action." José María Benito, spokesman for the Unified Police Union (SUP) said the new law "is going to create more tension because it will mean cutting back on rights". Of the more than 4,000 street demonstrations held in Madrid last year, there were just 10 instances of disorderly conduct, according to police sources.

Public security ranked 10th on the list of Spaniards' main concerns in an October survey by the Centre for Sociology Studies (CIS), far behind unemployment, political wrongdoing, spending cuts and corruption. Critics generally agree that the government's objective is to protect itself from growing social protests on the streets.

Rapist’s release sparks Police evict TV staff anger and concern Liquidators escorted by police evicted staff from a public TV station in Valencia last Friday, after receiving an order to shut it down. They moved in after staff at the lossmaking station defied the closure order by the regional government and continued broadcasting.

The regional government took the decision to close Radio Television Valenciana (RTVV) after losing a court battle over staff cuts. It is the first regional TV station to be closed down

as austerity measures bite. Police ringed off the RTVV building overnight before starting the evictions.

During the night, staff inside went on air to bid a tearful farewell to viewers. They were accompanied by politicians from the opposition Socialists, who called for the resignation of Valencia's regional Prime Minister, Alberto Fabra. Tension has been high since the closure was announced on November 5th. The regional government had

initially tried to sack 1,000 of the station's 1,700 employees, but staff successfully challenged the decision in court.

The regional government then decided to shut the broadcaster down entirely, saying it could not afford to reinstate the staff. There are 13 other regional public television stations, some of which have several channels, as well as the national broadcaster Radio Television Espana (RTVE).

Nationalist parties to snub Constitution anniversary Pictured are Ricart’s three victims: Desiree, Miriam and Antonia

Last Friday, Miguel Ricart, who was convicted in 1997 for the kidnap, rape and murder of three teenage girls from Alcasser, Valencia in 1992, was freed after serving only 16 years in prison as the result of applying the ruling by the Human Rights Court in Strasbourg that the socalled Parot doctrine is illegal. Ricart had been given consecutive sentences that totalled 170 years for his crimes, although under Spanish law the maximum anyone can serve in prison is 30 years, with time deducted for good behaviour. To prevent the worst offenders from being released sooner, courts had been applying a policy introduced in 2006 known as the Parot doctrine. Under this, any remission earned was subtracted from the full jail sentence rather than the 30-year maximum, ensuring that the most serious offenders remained in prison for the full 30 years. But that policy was ruled illegal by the Strasbourg court because it violated the principle that a prisoner's sentence cannot be increased retroactively.

More than 50 notorious criminals, among them three serial rapists and dozens of jailed members of the Basque terrorist group ETA, have been released in a matter of weeks. Ricart and Antonio Angles kidnapped and

raped three girls from the town of Alcasser near Valencia in 1992. It is widely regarded as one of the worst cases in Spain's criminal history because of the extreme violence with which it was committed and the frightening details revealed by the autopsies, which showed that the girls had literally been tortured to death.

Angles was never caught, his whereabouts are unknown and he is still on Interpol's most wanted list. The rumour that began to circulate over the weekend to the effect that a TV station wanted to interview Ricart, has caused an uproar, with the government threatening to close down any magazine, TV or radio station that interviews him. There are reports that the ETA prisoners, Ricart and the other criminals who have been released will be under tight police surveillance, which has upset some human rights groups.

About 200,000 people attended a demonstration in Madrid against the Strasbourg ruling organised by the Spanish Association of Terrorist Victims at the weekend. "We think that justice has not been rendered. We feel very wounded, very angry," said Angeles Pedraza, the head of the victims' group.

The government has confirmed that a total of 93 Eta prisoners were eligible

to have their sentences reviewed as well as another 37 prisoners among them murderers, rapists and paedophiles.

None of the country's nationalist political parties – Catalonia’s CiU and Republican Left (ERC), Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and two minor Basque nationalist groupings, Valencia’s Compromís, the Galician

Nationalist Bloc – will attend Parliament to mark the 35th anniversary of the Constitution, on December 6th. The parties attending will be the governing Partido Popular, the main

opposition Socialist Party, the centre-left UPyD, the Communist-dominated United Left, the conservative Navarrese People’s Union and members of the Asturias Forum, a conservative regionalist party.

The amount of requests from fellow builders for the same items prompted John to import on a larger scale

and open the Aim British Building yard and shop in Elviria. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength.

Aim British Building Supplies and DIY Centre prides itself on offering a personal service. If they don’t stock an item that you require, they will try to source it for you and bring out on the next lorry from the UK – which is usually every two to three weeks. Former editor of the Daily Star and Sunday Express Brian Hitchen, 77, and his wife Nelli were struck by a car on Sunday while crossing a road in Altea, near Benidorm.

A spokeswoman for Northern & Shell, the Daily Express and Daily Star's parent company, said: "We can confirm the sad news that Brian Hitchen, former editor of the Daily Star and the Sunday Express, and his wife, Nelli, have died after being been involved in a serious road accident in Spain. Brian was taken to a hospital in a very grave condition and doctors were not able to save him. Nelli very sadly died at the scene. Our thoughts are with their family at this time." World News Assad implicated in Syria war crimes

The UN's human rights chief said on Monday that an inquiry has produced evidence that war crimes were authorised in Syria at the "highest level", including by President Bashar al-Assad.

The UN's commission of inquiry into Syria has produced "massive evidence ... [of] very serious crimes, war crimes, crimes against humanity," Commissioner Navi Pillay said.

"The scale of viciousness of the abuses being perpetrated by elements on both sides almost defies belief," she said. It is the first time the

UN's human rights office has so directly implicated Mr Assad. However, the investigators have always said the Syrian government appears to be responsible for the majority, and that the systematic nature of the abuse points to government policy. Ms Pillay said her office held a list of others implicated by the inquiry. Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal

Mekdad was dismissive of Ms Pillay's remarks. He told foreign reporters: "She has been talking nonsense for a long time and we don't listen to her."

Also on Monday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based activist group which monitors deaths in the conflict, said its estimate of the number of

dead has now reached 125,835, more than a third of them civilians. Almost 28,000 rebel fighters had died, and over 50,000 progovernment soldiers and pro-regime militias.

However, it said it believed these figures were an underestimate as both sides were reticent about reporting deaths in their ranks.

Crashed NY train was 'over speed limit' The Metro-North train from Poughkeepsie to New York City that crashed on Sunday was doing 82mph in a 30mph zone when it ran off the rails, investigators have said.

Four people were killed and more than 60 injured in New York's Bronx borough. The National

Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating whether a mechanical failure or human error caused the train's high speed. It appeared to have been travelling over the speed limit even before it thundered into the curve where it crashed – the

speed limit on the track approaching the curve is 70mph, NTSB board member Earl Weener said on Monday.

New York Senator Charles Schumer called the locomotive's speed "frightening", adding that the rail line's tracks and signals appeared to have

been in working order at the time of the accident.

The accident was the second passenger train derailment this year for Metro-North, which, until Sunday, had never experienced a passenger death in an accident in its 31-year history.

Powerbroker 'dismissed'

A powerful uncle of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been removed from his post, South Korean media reported on Tuesday. Citing South Korea's intelligence agency, they said Chang Song-thaek, 67, lost his position as vice-chairman of the North's top military body. Two close aides were also executed for corruption, according to the reports.

if confirmed, Mr Chang's removal would be the biggest upheaval in North Korea's leadership since Mr Kim succeeded his father, analysts say. Kim Jong-un took over after Kim Jong-il died in 2011. However, the reports are difficult to verify, and South Korea's spy agency has been proven wrong before. Mr Chang was regarded as an economic reformer and a major influence on Kim Jong-un.

Voters back same-sex marriage ban

Voters have backed proposals to ban same-sex marriages in a referendum. Two-thirds of those who voted approved changes to Croatia's constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. A government spokesman confirmed that the constitution would now have to be changed accordingly. A petition backing the referendum, drawn up by a Catholic group, received more than 700,000 signatures.

Almost 90% of Croatia's population of 4.4 million are roman Catholics and the Church had strongly urged a "Yes" vote. The vote also received support from 104 members of Croatia's 151-seat parliament, although the government had spoken out against the referendum, urging people to vote no, along with human rights groups and prominent public figures. Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic had argued that the referendum threatened people's right to happiness and choice, and has pledged to push forward in the coming days proposals to give greater rights to same-sex couples.

Amazon testing drones for deliveries

Amazon is testing unmanned drones to deliver goods to customers, Chief executive Jeff Bezos said on Monday. The drones, called Octocopters, could deliver packages weighing up to 2.3kg to customers within 30 minutes of them placing the order, he said, adding that it could take up to five years for the service to start. He said the service will be called Prime Air. Amazon posted a video on its website showing a drone picking up a package from one of its warehouses and delivering it to the doorstep of a customer's house. However, it still has to wait for permission from US regulators. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved the use of drones for police and government agencies, issuing about 1,400 permits over the past several years. Civilian air space is expected to be opened up to all kinds of drones in the US by 2015 and in europe by 2016.

Power cut blacks out much of country

A massive power cut plunged the capital, Caracas, and other cities into darkness on Monday evening as President Nicolas Maduro was addressing the nation on television. The Caracas metro ground to a halt and people had to be evacuated from shops and offices. Deprived of the airwaves, Maduro took to Twitter to say that the government was monitoring the "strange blackout that occurred in the same place as the last act of sabotage". Power cuts are common in Venezuela, especially in the inland states, but rarely affect the capital. Although Venezuela has large oil reserves it is dependent on hydro-electricity for about 70% of its power. The blackouts did not affect Venezuela's oil refineries, which are powered by separate generator plants. The opposition says the governments of President Maduro and his predecessor, Hugo Chavez, have failed to maintain the power grid to meet growing demand, and resorted to conspiracy theories to divert attention from mismanagement.

Thai police remove barricades Thai protesters were able to enter the government's headquarters on Tuesday morning after police removed barricades from outside both Government House and the police office.

The police move was seen as an attempt to prevent further clashes, and considerably calmed down the mood in the capital Bangkok, which was the scene of violent clashes over the weekend and on Monday. But as tensions fell, protest leader and former opposition politician Suthep Thaugsuban said the protesters would "take over the Metropolitan Police Bureau and make it the people's". He vowed to fight on and remove the government.

Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra has rejected protesters' demands that she step down, saying she was open

to negotiations but that calls for the government to be replaced by an appointed council were illegal and unconstitutional.

The protests, which began on November 24th, had been largely peaceful until Saturday, when they became violent. The demonstrators want to replace the government with an unelected "People's Council", alleging Ms Yingluck's government is controlled by her brother, Mr Thaksin, an exiled former leader who was ousted in a military coup in 2006 that left the country

bitterly divided.

Ms Yingluck's government took office after winning elections in 2011, but the protesters allege that Mr Thaksin runs the government from overseas exile and accuse the current administration of using populist policies that are hurting Thailand's economy to remain in power. Four people have died in clashes since Saturday. It is Thailand's worst political turmoil since the 2010 rallies that ended in violence.

Bob Dylan faces French legal inquiry Singer Bob Dylan has been placed under judicial investigation in France for allegedly provoking ethnic hatred of Croats, following a legal complaint lodged by a Croat association in France over a 2012 interview Dylan gave to Rolling Stone magazine in which he allegedly compared the relationship between Jews and Nazis

to that of Serbs and Croats.

The singer, 72, was served notice of the investigation last month when he was in Paris to receive the Legion of Honour, a prestigious French award. During World War Two, the Croat Ustashe fascist movement killed hundreds of thousands of Serbs, Jews,

Roma and others in their death camps.

Croats and Serbs also fought each other during the break-up of Yugoslavia in the 19911995 war that left around 20,000 people dead. Being placed under judicial investigation means that authorities are taking the complaint seriously but it won't necessarily go further.

H7N9 bird flu reaches Hong Kong Hong Kong has confirmed its first case of the new strain of the H7N9 bird flu in a domestic worker from Indonesia.

The worker, 36, recently travelled to Shenzhen in the mainland and came into contact with live poultry. She is in critical condition, officials said. H7N9 has infected

more than 100 people since it emerged earlier this year.

The case in Hong Kong is a sign that the virus may be spreading beyond mainland China – where most infections have been reported – and Taiwan. The World Health Organization (WHO) had

N 07

said there was "no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission", but also described H7N9 as an "unusually dangerous virus". The WHO said at least 139 human cases of H7N9 have been confirmed, including 45 deaths.

Helicopter crashes Cameron in through the roof of trade talks with China a Glasgow pub There has always been the fear that sooner or later a helicopter could crash in a densely populated area causing a major incident, and that is exactly what happened in Glasgow on Friday evening when a police helicopter crashed into a pub containing over 100 people, killing the pilot, two policemen and several people on the ground.

The machine crashed through the roof of the Clutha Vaults where a live band was playing at the popular Stockwell Road

music venue. In addition to the deaths a large number of peple were taken to hospitals throughout the city for treatment.

Extracting the bodies of the victims took some time and the activities of the rescue services were recorded by the television news channels as the grim story unfolded. There was speculation that the pilot of the helicopter, a Eurocopter EC135 T2, was attempting to land on the roof of the

building. Witnesses said its engines appeared to splutter before it fell from the sky. People from the pub and members of the public formed a chain to help victims from the wreckage of the pub.

With some of the injured battling for their lives in intensive care and relatives mourning the dead, prayers were said and candles lit for the victims at Glasgow Cathedral on Sunday.

British bank faces probe The Financial Conduct Authority in Britain is asking banks to look at their treatment of smaller business customers following allegations of unscrupulous activity by some lenders. There has been criticism of the partnationalised Royal Bank of Scotland in particular, which has been accused of

deliberately causing some companies to default to seize their properties and it is the subject of an investigation.

The authority said that if proved the allegations would raise serious concerns, but the Royal Bank of Scotland has said it has no evidence of systematic fraud and is already carrying out

British Prime Minister David Cameron has taken a large delegation to China in a bid to increase business between the two countries and meet his target to double it by the next general election. Mr Cameron has said there should be no limit on co-operation with China, which has the world’s second largest economy, and he advocates an export-led recovery.

Chancellor George Osborne and London Mayor Boris Johnson visited China in October. Chinese investment in Manchester Airport and a new generation of nuclear power stations was announced at that time. Exports from Britain to China increased by 20 per cent in the first six months of this year and investment by China in Britain has now reached a new high.

Bankers bonuses

As the financial crisis eases it has been revealed that a large number of British bankers saw their earnings rise substantially last year, some of them receiving almost four times their annual salary in bonuses. European Banking Authority figures show that the UK had by far the highest number of bankers earning more than a million Euros, but a new European Union cap on bonuses is due to come into force next year in an attempt to stop excessive rewards. Chancellor George Osborne has filed a complaint over the plans and has suggested the move by Brussels would simply drive up salaries. The Treasury says the EU has gone beyond its remit and the cap has been decided without proper consultation and with no impact assessment. Over 80 per cent of the highest paid bankers in Britain work in investment banking.

Chinese money coming to the UK

A report from Reuters on Monday said that the China Construction Bank is to apply for a branch license to operate in London following an easing in UK rules for nonEuropean banking operations announced in October on how overseas banks can be set up. The easing is thought to be specifically aimed at China who have made clear they wish to expand their operations in Europe with London making a beeline to become the European hub for transactions involving the Chinese yuan. Also on Monday, Standard Chartered Bank announced it will cooperate with Agricultural Bank of China to provide yuan clearing services in the UK.

British property Badgers dodge market recovers the bullets It is taking the British property market many years to recover from the loss in property values that underpinned the recession, but the recent surge in house prices suggests the position is rapidly improving. In fact it is improving so fast that the Bank of England now feels that the Government’s Funding for Lending Scheme is no

longer required and the money could be better used helping small businesses.

Big British lender Nationwide says house prices rose 6.5 per cent year-on-year in November putting average house values at £174,566, some 6 per cent below the high in 2007. written by Vic Gardner

There is little that is more emotive than fox hunting and badger killing in the British countryside and the recent decision to end a badger culling trial in Gloucestershire has put the spotlight firmly back on the badger.

They have simply not shot enough badgers for the purposes of the trial, which is to measure its impact on the spread of tuberculosis in cattle. A similar trial in Somerset has also failed to meet its target.

Farming Minister George Eustice pointed out that over 300,000 cattle have been slaughtered in Britain over the past decade because of the disease and it was necessary to do everything possible to get it under control. Queen guitarist Brian May is one high profile show-business celebrity who disagrees. His environmental group ‘Save Me’ is opposed to the culling activity. written by Vic Gardner

Bank lending scheme success Boost for British manufacturing Since its inception last year Britain’s scheme for banks to pump more credit into the economy is giving evidence of a pick-up in the economy with the Bank of England announcing early this week £5.8 billion pounds was lent in the third quarter of the year – up from £1.6 billion in the previous quarter – and draw-downs of £23.1 billion from the Funding For Lending scheme with net lending rising by £3.6 billion since July last year by banks. The scheme works by the Central Bank making cheap funds available to banks and building societies on condition they lend the funds to UK households and businesses. "An economic recovery has taken hold. These data show that a significant improvement in credit conditions, aided by the

FLS, is now feeding through to lending," said Paul Fisher, executive director for markets at the bank. However, he added that lending to small businesses was still low and the Government said the scheme would no longer be providing funds for mortgage lending in the hope of avoiding a UK housing bubble. The data showed the biggest net lenders in the quarter were Lloyds Banking Group and Nationwide, who increased lending by 3.1 billion pounds and 2.7 billion respectively. Net lending fell at Santander UK, Barclays and the Co-operative Bank. Santander UK once again showed the biggest drop in net lending, which declined by 2.1 billion pounds in the third quarter.

British manufacturing grew at its strongest pace in almost three years in November and employment in the sector jumped, adding to signs the country's economic upturn is gaining momentum, a survey showed on Monday. In the three months to September the British economy grew by 0.8 percent, its best performance in more than three years, helped by a 0.9 percent expansion in the manufacturing sector up from 56.5 in October to 58.4 last month, its highest since February 2011. The employment subindex for the manufacturing sector leapt to 54.5, its highest since May 2011, from 51.9 in October, the

Thalidomide ruling Thalidomide, the drug used by pregnant women in the late 50s to alleviate their morning sickness problems was sold in 50 countries and caused birth defects in over 10,000 children. On Monday, British distributor Diageo who now owns the defunct distributor The Distillers Company agreed a settlement of Aus$89 million for 100 Australian and New Zealand victims plus Aus$6.5 million costs in the Victorian Supreme Court according to their lawyers. The victims’ lawyers also indicated that an associated suit against German manufacturer

Grunenthal would now be abandoned but will still be facing similar suits in the UK, Spain and the US.

"It has been difficult and challenging litigation but this settlement will now see a group of people receive compensation, a result that goes some distance to finally addressing a very grave historic wrong," said lawyer for the victims, Peter Gordon. "The result we have achieved today is a vindication of their courage. I never thought this day would come," said victim Monica McGhie. "Life has been a daily

survey showed with manufacturing companies creating around 5,000 jobs a month. A sub-index for new orders rose to 64.6 from 61.3, its highest level in more than 19 years. Exports had one of their best months since the financial crisis, helped by orders from euro zone countries. Unemployment has fallen faster than the Bank of England expected, adding to doubts about how long its pledge not to raise interest rates will last. In the three months to September the British economy grew by 0.8 percent, its best performance in more than three years, helped by a 0.9 percent expansion in the manufacturing sector.

Local n ews Union leader steps down The head of the regional chapter of the UGT (General Workers Union), Francisco Fernández Sevilla, resigned last Friday, following a series of allegations that the UGT may have illegally obtained money from the Junta de Andalucia. His resignation came a day after the Junta announced that it was reviewing some 30 files containing information about €7.5 million in subsidies and aid to the UGT’s chapter in Andalusia over the past years. Fernandez Sevilla told UGT general secretary Cándido Méndez he was stepping down so as not to tarnish the image of the

local chapter and to allow it to continue working normally, union sources said. His replacement will be elected during a special meeting on January 9th. According to the Junta's preliminary review, the UGT chapter may have to return some €1.8 million it received in 2009. The UGT has already returned €25,000 it received in subsidies for a lunch and meeting it organised at the Seville Fair. Regional government officials said they will file criminal charges against any UGT official suspected of receiving money illegally.

The allegations surfaced after the UGT

chapter announced layoffs for 159 workers and furloughs for another 57.

The investigation being carried out by the Andalusia government focuses on the years 2009 and 2010 when Manuel Pastrana headed the UGT chapter and Fernández Sevilla was part of Pastrana’s team of close advisors.

A separate investigation into the UGT is being carried by Seville Judge Mercedes Alaya as part of her ongoing inquiry into alleged embezzlement involving a special layoff fund set up by the Junta to help ailing companies pay their workers' severance pay.

Gibraltar puts up cigarette prices The Government has increased duty on cigarettes by 10p per packet in an effort to combat tobacco smuggling. The raise came into effect at midnight on December 1st.

The Chief Minister signed the relevant legal notices over the weekend before he left to attend the Queen's Evening Reception at Buckingham Palace. Picardo has also extended the areas where Police and Customs officers have wider powers to deal with those suspected of smuggling cigarettes to include an area between the frontier fence and the Ministry of Defence

facility at Four Corners.

The Chief Minister said: "We are continuing to extend the powers available to HM Customs and Royal Gibraltar Police officers in dealing with illicit tobacco activity and investing in repairing those parts of the frontier fence which have been damaged by those involved in this trade."

He said the government spent £129,513.96 last year on repairs to the frontier fence and erecting new fencing which is harder to damage. He also said new CCTV installations are being prepared to help deal with the security danger posed by potential unauthorised access to Gibraltar through holes in the frontier.

Picardo forced to flee The Chief Minister of Gibraltar made a hurried exit from Cadiz University last Thursday when he was jeered by a mob as he tried to enter to speak about cross-border cooperation. A small group of far-right extremists wearing masks and hoods joined Spanish fishermen to stage the protest at the university building in Algeciras. When Mr Picardo arrived some 50 demonstrators flew Spanish flags and chanted

"Gibraltar, Español”. The organisers of the academic event were branded “traitors”. Mr Picardo left the university through a backdoor after local police said they could not guarantee his safety.

"I am truly saddened that it has not been possible for me to speak to this group of students who were interested in hearing the Gibraltar Government's view of the legal status of Gibraltar,”

he said afterwards. “The visible level of hate and violence I witnessed was frankly remarkable. I sincerely believe that we should be talking to resolve the political issues between us. Violence and intolerance will not achieve anything. It will certainly not change my pro-dialogue views," he said. Hours before the scheduled speech, the local Partido Popular council

described it as “ill timed” and called for it to be cancelled because it was "politically and academically inopportune". The Algeciras branch of the Socialist Party described the PP council’s comments as a “full frontal attack on academic freedom”. The Madrid government's representative in Andalusia had said days before the event that it would be well policed to ensure public order was maintained.

Skyscrapers to be allowed

The local council has approved a change in the urban planning ordinance to allow "tall buildings for residential use" to be built. The amendment allows for buildings of up to 50 storeys and specifies a minimum of the ground floor plus 20 storeys. Councillor Pablo moro said such buildings were "energy efficient" and at least 10 per cent would be "for economic use". He said the buildings would not distort or mar the landscape, pointing out that buildings as high as 36 storeys already existed on the 27 kilometres of marbella's coastline.

The couples would have to be on the local council's register (empadronamiento) for at least three years and have an income of less than €12,000.

Future and past imperfect

T

he latest poll carried out for El Pais newspaper shows that if a general election were held now, the Partido Popular would come out top, but only with 146 seats – 30 short of the minimum majority of 176 needed to form a government. The Socialists would fare no better – although they'd recapture 21 of the seats they lost last time around, at 131 seats they'd be even further short of the majority they would need to form a government. Nor would they be able to rely on their closest ally in Parliament, the United Left, which would increase its number of seats to 25 from the 11 it has now – 25 and 131 don't add up to 176. It can be taken as a given that the United Left would rather commit collective suicide than side with the PP. The UP&D, which would increase its number of seats to 11, would be unlikely to side with either of the two main parties and wouldn't be able to guarantee them a majority anyway.

T

he rest of the seats are shared out, according to the poll, mainly among nationalist parties from Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia, who are notoriously fickle and unpredictable. Both major national parties, the PP and the Socialists, would have a smaller combined total of seats than ever before, and would have to negotiate with other groups to reach the absolute majority of 176. Even the PP, as winner, would need at least two other parties to agree to join a coalition deal. The alternative is an alliance of the PP and the PSOE, which right now would have as much chance of surviving as snowflakes would have in hell.

H

owever, if two weeks in politics is a long time – as Harold Wilson was wont to say – two years is the equivalent of a millennium, so anything could happen. One tempting scenario is that the King could decide to take back the powers – helped by the military – that Franco bequeathed him, to show the country's cantankerous politicians how to govern. Juan Carlos led the country through the dangerous period now known as the Transition and I believe he could do it again. On the other hand, Felipe Gonzalez might throw his hat into the ring again to rescue his party from its dangerous flirtation with the extreme Left and lead it back to the moderate left-of-centre. I can dream, can't I?

T

he only good thing about this latest poll is that it dashes United Left leader Cayo Lara's hopes of winning 50 seats in the next election to become the decisive "hinge" in the

next government.

Blasts from the past

f late, there has been a spate of programmes on the State broadcaster TVE about times past. There was a rivetingly good series on Channel 2 – La 2 – about the last years of Franco and the Transition and this week there's a programme on TVE1 about Adolfo Suarez, the King's hand-picked prime minister to lead the country through that dangerous period. And last Friday we had a programme about the 1960s bullfighter El Cordobes, aka Manuel Benitez, who turned bullfighting on its head.

W

hether you like bullfighting or not, it was the main entertainment for the "masses" during the first two decades of the Franco regime, until in the mid1960s the tourists started flooding in with their dangerous ideas and the Beatles and the Rolling Stones became standard fare here in Spain.

E

l Cordobes became part of that heady mixture, annoying the old time aficionados by vaulting over the bull and pulling off other incredible stunts, "disrespecting the bull" as they called it, turning the ritual killing into a circus. How he got to where he got is chronicled in the book by journalists Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre "Or I'll dress you in mourning", which is what he told his sister before his first major fight. The first part of the sentence was "I'll buy you a house". Last week's programme most appropriately was called "I didn't dress you in mourning". It's not just a biography of El Cordobes, it sets his life against the social and political background of the 1940s and 1950s, the worst years of the Franco dictatorship, and it's a very painless way of getting acquainted with Spain's past.

P

S: The bullfighter known as El Cordobes today claims the original one is father. The latter has consistently refused to submit to a DNA test but you can see the likeness in the photo.

he proposed Citizen Security Law is one of those measures that, if it survives judicial challenges, will be overturned when the Socialists eventually come back to power. And it won’t be the only law that this Partido Popular (PP) government has passed that will be rolled back when a different administration takes over.

T

his security bill, which is proposing an array of high fines aimed at clamping down on dissent, was approved last Friday by the Cabinet and is expected to clear the PP-majority parliament early next year. But rights groups and activists are joining the opposition and judicial organisations in denouncing some of the areas addressed in the bill where the government is threatening to draw hefty monetary penalties on its citizens. In a nutshell, the bill calls for fines of up to €30,000 to be imposed against anyone committing “offences against Spain”. This means insulting the country as an institution or any region during marches and rallies. It also sets a wide range of amounts against any striking worker who tries to prevent companions from going to their jobs and people who interfere with forced home evictions carried out by judicial officers. “The government knows that citizens are going to continue to protest on our streets and what they want is to instil fear and paralysis," said Socialist lawmaker Antonio Hernando.

I

Antonio Hernando

n other European nations, there are laws imposing limitations on public protests but usually they are aimed at keeping rallies from interfering with government, and prohibiting demonstrations from being held near public and law enforcement buildings. These laws also stipulate fines for anyone taking part in altercations and disturbances of the peace, but they are not nearly as tough as the ones this current Spanish government wants to impose on us. Since the Partido Popular came to office in 2011, the Rajoy administration has been

bombarded with a swelling mass of public rallies, demonstrations and protests that have been held nearly every weekend since then. But in contrast to street protests in Greece and other countries, the demonstrations in Spain have been rather peaceful. Yet they are still irritating for a conservative government that is trying present a peaceful international image of a country where the wine flows, the tapas keep coming, and there is good cheer all around.

B

ut it is not just liberal voices which are coming out against the law. There are some conservatives who are not too sure about some of the statutes in the bill. Writing in El Confidencial website, conservative columnist Jose Antonio Zarzalejos said that the law “will add the stigma of authoritarianism to the political failure of the PP".

uthoritarianism is what the PP wants to impose on us – putting muzzles on the mouths of hundreds of thousands of Spaniards who are just demanding better living standards, jobs and eradication of party corruption is tantamount to freedom of speech crackdowns. The PP cannot stand dissent and the ultra conservative factions inside the ruling party are trying their best to put down any such criticism by scaring people with threats to their pocket books. This is almost equivalent to the methods used in Germany in the early 1930s after the Nazis came to power. They introduced statutes that were fashioned to keep the opposition and other challengers in line, starting at first with mild prohibitions of street demonstrations which eventually turned into ugly laws that marked anyone who was against the regime as the enemy.

I

t is no doubt an exaggeration to predict that Citizens Security Law will lead to anything of that nature, but the eerie similarities in the government’s direction are there. Fortunately, there are legal forums in which this “anti-protest” law can be challenged. And it is expected activists will ask the Spanish courts for their opinion while at the same time reserving their rights to appeal before the European Court of Human Rights. It is the right thing to do if we want to keep the PP from trampling on our civil guarantees.

Throughout the year, many bars and establishments across the Costa del Sol, collect money in RAFA (Royal Air Forces Association) collecting tins. The amount collected by each place is totalled up during October, and an award is made to the establishment which collects the most money. In previous years this award has taken the form of The Povey Trophy which depicted the RAF Memorial Flight in formation. These trophies have however become "tired" and have been replaced by a new "Wings Trophy Shield". RAFA are pleased to

announce that the first winner of this shield is "The Olive Tree" in Coin. They collected the grand sum of over 305€ and also over 200€ at auctions. Every cent collected goes towards the provision of a very busy Welfare scene. The shield was presented to them last Saturday during their RAFA auction that was being held there that raised another €113.68. Many thanks are sent from RAFA to Tina and David and all their customers for this magnificent sum.

PET OF THE WEEK

TUG

Meet Tug – a sweet natured little boy who sails alongside the larger dogs like a little tug boat.

He is very friendly and good with our other dogs, who are teaching him manners (bum sniffing and bed stealing etc!). He is respectful of the cats and only mildly interested in the chickens. He’s perfectly clean indoors and can be left in the utility room on his bed without any fuss. He is nervous in the car

but not sick. He was found running among traffic which explains his nervousness.

He is being lead trained but is timid and needs to be coaxed. He is 38 cm or 15 inches to the top of his shoulder, comes when called, understands 'no' and sits when told – sometimes. Contact Pat on 620 453 885 for more info or visit the website at www.famaspain.com

La Cala Lions go wild PAD 17th birthday La Cala Lions have two Christmas extravaganzas – one that has already taken place and the other you still have time to book for and enjoy.

Father Christmas found his reindeers on strike and so he had to send his helper to hand out free gifts to all the children who came to the Lions Christmas Fayre. What a good job he made of it. This year over €2000 were raised for Children's

charities and there was an enormous turnout of visitors to support the day. The Fayre was opened by Thomas Leighton and cheques were presented to different children's charities during the day. There was a children's choir and a ladies' choir – in fact there was everything you needed for a great day out plus a fabulous display of gifts, flowers, clothes, oils, greeting cards from many supportive stall holders

and, of course, the Lions’ own famous cake stall raffle and tombola. The Diabetic Support Group stand said they had never been so busy testing glucose and blood pressures. Grateful thanks were given to all the volunteers and stall holders who supported the day and to John Peach and his willing staff at the Tamisa Golf Hotel who worked tirelessly providing a great lunch and bar snacks.

Diary Date for another fun Lions' event!

Remember to reserve your tickets for the Lions' Christmas Party Dinner and Dance at the Mijas Playa in La Cala de Mijas on Saturday December 7th. Tickets for a fabulous inclusive menu and evening cost 35 euros and are available from the restaurant or the Lions shops. Please come along to support the evening which is in aid of children's charities. For more information phone 607 879 450.

Last Friday evening saw the PAD dinner to celebrate their 17th birthday – quite a feat in this day and age! The celebrations took place at the Valparaiso restaurant with everyone done up in their finest.

The starter choice of crêpe filled with prawns and spinach was delicious, as were the cream of asparagus soup, salmon tartare on a bed of smoked salmon, duet of pheasant and duck paté with Cumberland sauce.

Main courses of lamb, fish, chicken or pork medallions with proscuito ham and mozarella, all with roast potatoes, beans and carrots were equally delicious – and dessert choices including tiramisu, apple strudel, ice cream or tropical fruit salad were all greatly enjoyed.

Butler, ably assisted by Barbara and two other ladies from the audience who showed off the lots to their best advatages – lots such as a Japanese Kimono, Capo di Monte tureen and plate and a beautiful original watercolour by Josephine Rutland, while Blanco the cuddly dog went through the roof with the bids.

A €300 donation was given by the Association of Oddfellows, Costa del Sol and there was a personal donation of €50. Thanks go to all who gave so generously. All in all a much needed €515 was raised during the evening that was rounded off with a disco to work off some of those calories.

This month’s garden group meeting announced The Andalucian Garden Group’s next meeting is on Tuesday 10th December in Bar La Peñita, behind the BP Garage on Calle Gerald Brennan in Alhaurin el Grande, meeting at 5.30pm for a 6pm start. They hold a regular monthly meeting (every second Tuesday of the month) at this venue.

Their speaker this month is Andrew Sloan. Andrew has spoken to the group before and they are looking forward to his talk again. Over the last few years, Andrew has been replanting his garden with plants which require little or no water. This is something many of us are also trying to do and if the lack of rainfall which we have had this year so far is

going to continue, it will have been a very good thing to have achieved! This promises to be a really interesting talk for all who attend.

As it’s their Christmas meeting, they will be enjoying a glass of wine and some cake – giving even more time than usual to chat with friends and make new ones.

Frozen

Directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee Voices of: Alan Tudyk, Ciaran Hinds, Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel Christmas is around the corner, there’s a chill snap in the air and that means it must be time for the annual Yuletide treat – the latest in Disney animation. And here is a perfect seasonal tale to warm your heart.

Sisters Anna (Bell) and Elsa (Menzel) are the beloved daughters of the king and queen of Arendelle. Elsa is born with magical powers – anything she touches turns to ice, and she is warned by her parents to keep her powers secret from a world that may misunderstand.

The girls are orphaned when their parents die in a shipwreck and are raised together in splendid isolation in the royal castle until Elsa has to accede the throne in her late teens. But during her coronation she accidentally removes her gloves and lets loose her powers, bringing eternal winter to the kingdom.

This is a tale of two loving sisters torn apart by circumstance, their endeavours to find each other, and bring sunshine and love once more to their land.

The Disney animation team has produced a funfilled fantasy with plenty of what you expect to find

from Disney and Pixar (John Lassiter is coproducer) and the snow and ice shots are graphically realised – wear your mitts! There are some great songs and lots of adventures with plenty of twists and turns before a heart-warming finale.

What’s on over Christmas at the Salon Varietes Fuengirola

Christmas at the Salon Varietes always begins with their annual yuletide musical revue. This year the show has been devised and directed by John Gale (perhaps better known as Johnny G.) and his wife, Sandra – both very experienced theatre people. I had the pleasure of attending their Saturday rehearsal and I’m pleased to say that together they have conjured a Christmas Show like you’ve never seen before.

Seeing so much experience around – with many of the performers having spent many hours treading the boards here and in the UK, both professionally and unpaid – I thought it would be nice to talk to the youngest member of the cast and her Mum. That is how in the middle of rehearsal mayhem I found myself interviewing a very confident seven-year-old Lucia Puccio. This is her first show at the theatre and by now she is not a bit overawed by looking at 300 seats soon to be filled by families out for a good evening partly provided by her. She has been studying at Stagecoach School for three years and Mum says she has really taken to acting and singing. At the theatre she says she has loved working with John and Sandra because they are 'really nice and helpful'. She is singing a song called “Lonely pup” by Adam Faith and dancing as part of an ensemble to

“Merry Christmas Everyone” by Shakin Stevens but the big moment is her part in a tear-jerking Nat King Cole number, so tissues at the ready! She had to dash off to perform so I asked Mum what she thought. She told me it had been a really good experience for Lucia, working and interacting with adults. Mum had been to every rehearsal and could see the growing confidence as Lucia found her space on the stage. At the beginning she had been worried that with so many adults around Lucia would be sidelined or retreat into her shell but those stories about starstruck theatre folk had been proved untrue and so much help and support had been given, that she absolutely loves the show.

The rehearsal had been going well and it soon became clear that this wasn’t your average Christmas Show. The songs offer something for everyone, from the classics to the contemporary – some to make you smile, some to make you think and some to blow your mind. Indeed, it may have been just a rehearsal but it was clear the gorgeous dancers were not only good at it but having a great time and exuded a vibe that spread across even an empty theatre. Then came something unexpected. Instead of just songs and dances, on came two very well-known comic actors at the theatre, Owain Griffiths and

Sheila Wohlmuth, who proceeded to perform a series of comedy sketches. Together they start you chuckling and over the course of the evening take you side splitting. On top of this, all the action is glued together by the crazy antics of a multitalented, happy little elf played by Dylan Gale.

That almost brings us back to Lucia because Dylan first appeared at the theatre when he was four. He is now a positively ancient 12 and has been in the last seven pantos and in as many musicals as he can persuade the director to let him appear. With a good stage presence he is a great example of how theatre craft can help build self confidence. It is good to see the theatre bug across the generations, and seasoned performers taking pleasure in seeing so much young talent being brought through in a show which will be superb entertainment for the whole family. It will appeal across the nationalities too, scarcely a song that won't be known whether in Northern Finland or Southern Spain.

Step Into Christmas opens on Friday December 6th and runs until Tuesday December 10th. Box Office 952 47 45 42 and you are now able to book online at www.salonvarietestheatre .com.

WEDNESDAY, December 4th 2013

It is all about ‘connecting’ with you this week, deciding who you want to be around you for the long term and who is trying to feed off your personal magnetism. Develope those close intimate relationships so that they have a secure base for the future. By the weekend you will be looking to have some fun and to put your worries aside. Perhaps someone will be putting your needs first for a change. If funds are limited do not dwell on what you do not have but instead focus and appreciate all that you do. It is so easy to get caught up in trying to compete with others that you can miss your own riches. There are a lot of tasks that need to be completed and how effective you are depends a lot on your own mood and how you feel – it is the seeds you are sowing now that will create your future.

Genius ideas will be floating around in your head this week and you will feel in a positive and go getter mood. This is a good thing as the pace of your life is set to quicken and you will need to keep your focus on completing chores and getting your mundane world in order so you can keep up with the current movement. Check the small print before signing anything.

It is easy to get distracted right now and you may have an urge to take risks and not be really aware of all the consequences that could follow. This is because Neptune the planet of dreams is strong with you now. Make sure you double check all your facts and figures particularly if submitting written work. The positive side of this aspect is in the area of romance – so if you have things to say to a loved one then take the risk and put your heart on the line.

If you are feeling run down then take the time to get some well needed rest and you will soon be firing on all cylinders again. This week you need to trust your insights and ideas, even if they are radical and way out, they have a hint of brilliance in them. The key to benefitting from this energy is to keep your mood light and open, avoiding heavy and negative discussions that lead nowhere. You are fed up with skirting around the topics when there is something that needs to be faced and dealt with right at the heart. This means of course that you will have to take a risk with communication and be willing to open up and put your truth on the line. Within this obstacle lies great potential for happiness whilst getting rid of some of your worries. Stand tall, eventually, you will be appreciated for your courage to face adversity and sort things out. If a project you are working on seems to hit a brick wall then have patience it will only be a short delay and will not impact upon the end result. Take the space now to relax, wind down, use this time to your advantage and know that you have done all you can for the time being. Being a team player is not following the crowd but supporting others in the pursuit of the same goal, this will become more apparent as the week unfolds. Although, this is a good time to network with others in your field, finding that you are more often in touch with others that are of a like mind, it is at this very point that you discover these are the ones you are trying to avoid. They basically mirror yourself too much making you feel uncomfortable. However, nobody said development and growth was easy – there will be immense gains and ability to be discovered through this process.

These pasties are a great little snack – you can make them in advance and they can be frozen if pastry has not been frozen before. Prep time: 20 mins – Cooking time: 30 mins .

ink Shoppers in the UK Geek get ready for pavement rage

Dawdlers, large groups and window browsers are the biggest causes of pavement rage, according to research from shopping app Udozi. With Christmas just around the corner, shoppers are already flocking to the high streets to fight over the tastiest tech treats. But despite being the season to be jolly, research by local shopping app Udozi has revealed that more than a quarter of Brits are set to suffer from ‘pavement rage’ this Christmas. The research, which polled the views of 2,000 consumers, shows that 37 per cent state that ‘busy crowds’ are their biggest source of stress this festive season which is major cause of ‘pavement rage’. The Udozi research reveals that ‘dawdlers’ are the biggest source of anger

on the streets, as 42 per cent of people get most annoyed at fellow shoppers who walk too slowly. People in large groups taking up too much space on the pavement are another big pavement peeve at 38 per cent followed by people who stop dead in their tracks to window browse at 24 per cent. Large groups of teenagers (14 per cent), parents with prams (9 per cent), people who stop to take photos (7 per cent) and tourists (4 per cent) are other culprits. However the majority of those questioned still prefer to shop on the high streets than online. The main

reasons given were that customers like to see an item before they purchase it and that they liked the ‘buzz’ of the high street. Alan Gabbay, founder of Udozi commented: “We’ve all experienced the stresses of rush hour on the roads, so it’s no surprise that as pavements get busier people may experience pavement rage on the streets. But even though pedestrian-clogged roads can be annoying, it’s clear that Brits still prefer to do their Christmas shopping amongst the action rather than behind a screen.”

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Sue,

Is it necessary to use an eye cream as well as a moisturiser? Chantal, Marbella Dear Chantal,

The skin around the eyes is very fragile. This is where wrinkles and lines first take hold-and they cannot be prevented, only minimised. Anti-ageing eye creams with skin-plumping ingredients that promote collagen and

elastin production help to smooth out these lines. Your moisturiser will normally be too rich to use around the eyes and will cause the skin to congest, leading to blackheads or milia. A heavy cream will almost certainly cause the skin to sag even more in time resulting in bags under the eyes. Eye products are very light in texture and contain certain ingredients that specifically target the reduction of fine lines. Please be gentle when applying eye products – use your ring

finger to tap them into the skin softly. Never rub the area when removing makeup. Dear Sue,

My oily skin always looks sweaty and shiny. How can I control it? Joy, Mijas Costa. Dear Joy,

Firstly don't over cleanse your oily skin as this will strip it of its essential natural oils, making it go into overdrive to compensate and produce even more sebum. Switch to a gentler cleansing routine with products designed to cope with oily skin. Don't discount a moisturiser, your skin still needs nourishment and protection, but ensure it is a balancing one. This over time will help regulate the sebum production. A mask that is designed to help oily skin

should be used twice a week along with a gentle exfoliator. Dear Calvin,

In the last couple of weeks my hair has been falling out and has lost its shine. What can I do? Beth, Fuengirola Dear Beth,

On average we lose 50-100 hairs a day naturally. But there can be other causes for losing excessive hair such as medications, stress, fever, chronic illness, being on a diet – which can effect your protein level – and an underor over-active thyroid. It is quite common as we come into autumn to lose more hair than normal as the new hair tends to thicken up in the winter, much the same as an animal’s coat. Also you will lose more hairs on the day you

Energy drinks 'change heartbeat' Energy drinks packed with caffeine can change the way the heart beats, researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany have warned. The researchers gave the participants on their study a drink containing 32mg per 100ml of caffeine and 400mg per 100ml of another chemical, taurine. Imaging done one hour later showed that the chamber of the heart that pumps blood around the body, the left ventricle, was contracting harder than at the start of the study. They said: "We've shown that energy drink consumption has a shortterm impact on cardiac contractility. We don't know exactly how or if this greater contractility of the heart impacts daily activities or athletic performance." The impact on people with heart disease is also unknown.

However, the research team said children and people with an irregular heartbeat should avoid the drinks. They said: "Until now, we haven't known exactly what effect these energy drinks have on the function of the heart. The amount of caffeine is up to three times higher than in other caffeinated beverages like coffee or cola. "There are many side effects known to be associated with a high intake of caffeine, including rapid heart rate, palpitations, rise in blood pressure and, in the most severe cases, seizures or sudden death."

The British Soft Drinks Association has already said the drinks are not suitable for children.

shampoo than the days you don't. Try not to worry about your hair loss. I am sure in a short time your hair will recover. Dear Calvin,

I am trying to grow my hair, how often should I have it trimmed? Lisa, Mijas Dear Lisa,

One of the biggest mistakes people make when growing their hair is not

having it cut. I recommend a light trim every 6-8 weeks, this will make sure the ends do not dry out and when you get to your desired length hopefully your hair will look healthy and strong.

Advertorial

No worries, just memories Those who have lived in Spain for any amount of time, or read the papers know that corruption and black money is a regrettable part of the “old school” culture.

However few realise how, even now, it can affect them directly – especially when they can be at their lowest ebb. But for those unaware of the systems it can. Upon death of any person, whether it be in a hospital or at home, it is common for the families to fall victim. Any funeral director who is not invited directly by the family does not find out by chance. Usually the “lead” has come from someone involved at the time of death, who has in turn phoned a friend. The reward for such behaviour is usually in the region of €500, and the money is incorporated into the family’s bill.

Funeral Care Spain unfortunately sees this on a regular basis. In one recent loss the widower was contacted 14 times in 24hrs by various parties, scouting for business, some even arriving at his home. As an established English funeral directors, Funeral Care Spain try to

raise awareness of these and other tactics that are used on vulnerable and distressed people in their time of need. Their trained staff give clear advice and pricing to anyone that requires it at no obligation. A standard funeral and cremation service in Spain should cost an average of €3200, and the full costing should be itemised in advance. Repatriations to the UK for example will cost around €4500 with an expected cost in the home country raising the total bill to around €6000.

Funerals are no-one´s favourite topic. However with clear knowledge, anyone who finds themselves in a situation such as this can be prepared. Funeral Care Spain can give no obligation advice and quotations in any circumstances, in any part of Spain or its islands. Their staff speak your language, and realise the importance that a dignified, caring service plays in the grieving process.

Iconic songster wins even more fans at this year’s series of concerts

Bob Dylan returns to the Royal Albert Hall … to heaps of praise for his new-style sound after his controversial appearance there 47 years ago Last Wednesday saw Bob Dylan, now 72 years old and dressed in a gambler’s coat and mariachi pants topped by his still there curly hair, playing London’s Albert Hall for the first time since 1966 and while, as usual Dylan said absolutely nothing to the audience – letting his music say what he wanted to relate to them – he came across as strong as he ever was. There were three concerts at the Albert Hall last week, part of his Never-ending Tour that will see him touring around 100 venues around the world each year. First up was Oscar winner “Things Have Changed” followed by “She Belongs To Me” that featured in the ’66 concert. The set was super-tight with ovations from the audience following each song, some old favourites and some from his latest

album “Tempest”. With his characteristic gravelly voice the audience were enthralled with his words “I’ll pay in blood but not my own” from “Pay in Blood” from “Tempest”, a bitter version of “Love Sick” from his ’97 album “Time Out Of Mind” and a different, positively jazzy version of “Tangled Up In Blue” from “Blood On The Tracks” and then “What Good Am I?” from 1989’s “Oh Mercy” album.

Although he cannot play much guitar these days – his hands won’t let him – he spent the evening mostly sitting centre stage at a grand piano or at the mike, plus of course playing his famous harmonica, and there’s no sign of any let up in his creativity. Some fans love the new style while some of the purist Dylan fans from way back don’t like the new style lent

to his old classics. The last time he played at this venue, some 47 years ago, there were boos and hisses as he introduced his electric group, known as The Band, to his audience, many of whom wanted him to stay as the political folk singer they saw him as. In a famous confrontation, for many years reputed to be at the Albert Hall, a fan shouted out "Judas" to which Dylan replied "I don't believe you" and instructed the band to "play f***ing loud". The concert, heckler included, was released in 1998 as "The 'Royal Albert Hall' Concert" – though in fact it was from the Free Trade Hall in Manchester. As an encore, he played a roaring "All Along the Watchtower" followed by a R'n'B version of the peace anthem "Blowin' in the Wind" before he disappeared into the night.

centred on a fictitious British crime fighting agency, CI5, and was one of the first all-action series of the time with a huge following throughout its 57 episodes.

Martin Shaw said: "I was very sad to hear today that Lewis has died. We spent a very tough four years together in making The Professionals, and shared in the production of what has become an icon of British television. He will be remembered as part of the childhood of so many people, and mourned by his fans. I send my love and condolences to his family, and the great many who will miss him." Collins' other most notable role came in 1982's Who Dares Wins, when he played a member of the SAS. His Professionals character was a former paratrooper and SAS soldier. In real life he passed the actual selection course for 23 SAS, one of the SAS's two Territorial Army battalions, but was turned

down because of his celebrity status. He also tried out for the rôle of James Bond but was turned down by Cubby Broccoli for being “too agressive”.

In latter years he did a bit of acting but ran a successful computer business in LA according to his biography. Born on Merseyside he worked as a drummer in local bands and as a hairdresser before getting into acting. He married teacher Michelle Larrett in 1992 and they had three sons, Oliver, Elliot and Cameron.

Despite earlier reports to the contrary police have announced that the car accident that killed Fast and Furious actor Paul Walker was not, in fact, a street race even though the area where the crash happened is known for them. Paul Walker, 30, was a passenger in his friend’s Porche when it hit a lampost, disintegrated and burst into flames last Saturday in Los Angeles. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Mr Walker was on a break from shooting scenes for the next episode in the series of Fast and Furious films adding that the film

Simon investigates ancient routes and shrines across Europe that are still being used, trying to find out if modern pilgrims are motivated by religious devotion or a sense of adventure. He visits the Way of St. James, a 500-mile route that starts in the French town of St. Jean-Pieddu-Port, crosses the Pyrenees, winds through northern Spain and finishes in the holy city of Santiago de Compostela.

New series. Julia Bradbury and Matt Allwright profile the everyday heroes who battle the challenges that arise with each passing season. In autumn they ride along with the crews of Cleveland Fire Brigade on Bonfire Night - their busiest time of the year - and meet the railway workers that keep the country moving in the face of those dreaded leaves on the line. Also, as the national birth rate rockets, cameras follow the midwives of St Thomas' Hospital, central London, as they face an autumnal baby boom.

Cudeca Hospice once again celebrates Light a Light on Friday 13th December from 6 p.m. at the Hospice Centre in memory of our loved ones. The Lights are a special tribute to a loved one and are dedicated to them for a minimum donation of €10 that can be done straight away at the Hospice or on line, via http://www.cudeca.org On this special evening, we will enjoy listening to choirs and there will also be a raffle, home-made cakes, and other savoury

I see that that boring antidote to insomnia, "BBC Sports Personality of the year"is soon to be exhumed for my displeasure. By way of solace to any reader in danger of being sent around the bend by a compulsory viewing of "Bend it like Beckham" I humbly offer myself as a candidate for "Carer of the Month" A position forced on me by the illness of my wife (hereinafter referred to as "the Boss). The Lights are switched on by our President and Founder, Joan Hunt O.B.E. Everyone is welcome to join us for this poignant evening. propeller which sends the rest of the prop whizzing around like crazy. And for this murky month I have been sent whizzing around like crazy by The Boss. From her supine, yet superior position on the "Sweet dreams with Asda" bed, the commands flow faster than even the No. 4 bus to Carvajal. Wary of approaching the c. in c. because of the walking stick craftily lying on the floor, to trip me up, I normally yell through the doorway "Whaddya want NOW?"

This is not saying that the patient is not patient. Were this not so, the patient would be denied her patent medicine ... a dash of Rum and Coke. But time must stand still whilst I am singledhandedly destroying the one-person kitchen. But there goes THE VOICE again, before this email becomes a PLEA mail! Editor says: But what a lovely lady The Boss (Jean) is! We wish her a speedy recovery and poor Jim a rest as soon as possible.

CDS Photographic Society by email As the Festive Season and New Year loom perhaps it’s time to take stock and try something different and, what better way to make a great start than by joining the Costa del Sol Photographic Society?

Members and friends of the Society recently enjoyed an interesting and informative day visiting Las Valdesas Olive Oil Factory and the village of Estepa.

The next Home Meeting will be on Tuesday, 10th December in the Innova Park Building, Garcia Lorca, Benalmadena Costa, commencing at 11.00 a.m. This month's competition topic is "Anger".

The Society is open to anyone interested in photography, at whatever level. New members are always welcome and full details can be seen on the website: www.photoclubspain.com

The society is full of friendly people who will be happy to show new members “the ropes” if you’re not sure about how to cope with different lighting and perspective situations. You will be able to make new friends and enjoy the many outings the society goes on throughout the year so, why not pop along, call us or email us and get yourself a new hobby for the coming year?

Comet Ison; RIP I

After all the build-up and hype surrounding the ‘Comet of the Century’ I have some bad news. was hoping to be telling you how and when to see this celestial firework display throughout December. Unfortunately as Ison passed within one million miles of the Sun on 28th November the heat and gravity from the Sun was just too much for the little guy. Latest reports suggest that most of the bulk of Ison was stripped away leaving just a small nucleus. This nucleus will continue on its path passing above the Earth on December 26th and out into deep space never to return. I doubt very much if it will be visible except in larger telescopes. o it’s plan B. Look low down toward the southwest horizon just after sunset tomorrow 5th and Friday 6th November and you should see a very nice conjunction between Venus and the Moon. The Moon will be in a very young crescent phase (new Moon occurred on 2nd December) and because it is so low down near the horizon the Moon always appears huge. This is known as the big Moon phenomenon. No one is really sure why but the Moon always appears bigger when it is close to the horizon. It is thought that because you have objects in the foreground this gives a sense of perspective, but accurate measurements have proved that the Moon is no bigger when it is close to the horizon than when it is high in the sky. s well as seeing the thin crescent phase of the Moon, look very carefully at the unlit side and you can see a ghostly ashen light, it is not in total darkness. This is Earthshine. A full Moon can shine very brightly in the night sky and even light your way home. In reality the Moon is really quite dark. Moon rocks brought back to Earth by the Apollo astronauts have shown that the Moon’s surface has a similar appearance to charcoal but it still shines brightly. n the other hand, the Earth is about three times bigger than the Moon and so appears huge as seen from the Moon. We are also covered in highly reflective white clouds and have snow covered polar ice caps. The oceans too reflect a great deal of sunlight. In truth, from the Moon we appear as a huge dazzlingly bright planet. hen the Moon is in its early phase the Earth appears almost full and so is reflecting

the maximum amount back to the Moon and it is this reflected light that causes the Moon to shine on its unlit side. t is also the best time to observe the Moon with a telescope or binoculars. The low angle of the Sun creates jetblack shadows inside craters or along the edges of mountains on the Moon. As the Sun rises higher in the lunar sky the line between dark and light (the terminator) slowly creeps across the surface. Mountain peaks slowly come into view as pinpoints of light in the dark side, gradually more and more of the details come into view. Craters are much more pronounced when filled with shadow and because there is no atmosphere on the Moon to scatter the light around the definition between light and dark is very sharp. ecause the Moon always keeps the same face pointed toward the Earth then the Earth is constantly in the lunar sky. Of course we are rotating about our axis during the day and so we present a constantly changing face. Also as the Moon progresses around the Earth during the month then the phase shape changes. ontrary to popular belief, there is no man-made object on Earth that can be seen from the Moon. A lot of people believe that the Great Wall of China can be seen from space. This isn’t true; while the Great Wall may be very long it is only very narrow, less wide than your average motorway. The glow from city lights is the only evidence of humans that can be seen from the Moon. hina launched an unmanned rover Chang’e3 to the Moon on December 1st. The lunar rover is expected to touchdown on December 14th and explore possible landing sites in readiness for a manned lunar landing in 2025. The next man on the Moon could very well be Chinese!

through the Federacion Espanola de Bolos. Both the Ladies and Men competed in various disciplines playing challenging matches, but all played in true sportsman like fashion. The Rinks event had exciting endings in both the semi final and the final when the team of Dine Warn, Lynda Hall, Barbara Land and John Warn, the skip, played the winning shot with the very last bowl against Trevor Burgin, David OwenScott, Julian Thomas and Jackie Simmonds. The Men’s Pairs competition was won by Brian Todd and John Green with a victory over Julian Thomas and Greg Ellwood. The Ladies competition was an exciting match between Jenny Aldridge with Lynda Hall and Claire Dye with Kate Morris. Claire and Kate set up an early lead of 11 shots to 4 but Jenny and Lynda fought

back to 13 shots each. Heads changed with bowl after bowl and with 3 ends to go and 4 shots down Jenny and Lynda won the last 3 ends but could not get the extra shot that was needed to get a draw. Claire and Kate were victorious and Kate retained the title but with another partner this year. Tom Rogers in the semi final of the men’s singles showed Brian Todd how well he can play. His drawing skills were fantastic and he beat Brian who was unable to stop the excellent bowling from Tom. Unfortunately his success did not hold out in the final. Geoff Edgington who has improved so much over the last few years, played with such confidence and used his last bowl on many occasions to come in to get the shot. He won the title by 21 shots to 12. The Ladies singles was

between Barbara Land, who is on top form at the moment having just won the Miraflores Open singles and Kate Morris. Kate played well but Barbara forged ahead to win the title quite easily 22 shots to 8. John Carr, the Federation Delegate, thanked Trevor Burgin and Sue Walker for organising the competition, the umpires and markers for their support, the bar staff and all the spectators and players for supporting the event. He then presented the Trophies and prizes to the winners and runners up.

Our next event is the Christmas Hamper on Tuesday 10th December and is open to all federated players. Names to Sue Walker by 4th December. Report by Sue Walker

Rory McIlroy wins Australia rule Trott Australian Open taunts off-limits Adam Scott stood on the 18th tee of Royal Sydney playing his final tee shot and holding a one-shot lead over Rory McIlroy, and the triple crown of Australian golf within his grasp. One hole standing in the way of an incredible feat by adding the Australian Open to the Masters and PGA titles he has won in recent weeks.

Scott's second shot to the 18th green rolled down a swale. His chip back was just a little thin. That left him a long putt for par, which he missed. The bogey, only his second of the day, left Scott on 17-under for the week after a final round of 71. But after leading all week, and starting the final round with a four-shot lead, Scott's mishap on that final hole opened the door for McIlroy to steal the title with a five-metre birdie putt. McIlroy duly obliged, rolling in the putt to snatch the title from Scott, and end his own personal nightmare of a season.

McIlroy's game came to life at the 5th hole where he got his first birdie of the day. That cut Scott's lead to three and suddenly the young Irishman had a bit of

a spring in his step. He reduced the deficit even more at the par-five 7th where he made eagle, and then all of a sudden the two were tied at the top at 16under as McIlroy rolled in a birdie putt at the 8th, for his fourth three in a row.

The 9th almost brought another birdie but McIlroy's putt just stayed out and Scott then replied with a birdie of his own to retake the outright lead at 17under as the pair made the turn for home and the back nine of the tournament. The star pairing was certainly keeping the massive crowds entertained.

Scott walked off the 16th after he had three-putted for par, then, after hitting a tremendous long iron into the par-three 17th, he

missed another birdie chance while McIlroy kept the tournament alive by holing for his par from three metres. And so the pair headed to the 18th tee with Scott holding that narrow 1-shot lead. But it was to end with McIlroy gaining his first win of 2013 and hoping that finally, he had silenced his critics. "I wanted to get a win by the end of the season," McIlroy said, "and I take satisfaction from taking on one of the world's best down the stretch. "I actually feel a bit sorry for ruining things. Adam is a credit to the game and a credit to his country." McIlroy's final round of 66 was the equal best round of the day. "I've been building confidence for a few weeks now. I've worked hard, put the hours in and it's coming around for me," he said. "We both gave ourselves plenty of chances down the stretch and Adam gave me some lifelines out there. "It's a very prestigious tournament and I'm honoured to put my name on that trophy." By Mike Kerrigan

Wayne’s Poker Tips

A number of people have told me they do not understand the game of poker so reading my articles means nothing to them. So this week let’s go through the basic rules of Texas Hold'em.

Texas Hold'em is arguably the most popular form of poker. It is widely considered to have the most strategy of all poker games, yet the rules are quite simple.

Here is how a hand of Texas Hold'em is played: 1. Hole Cards. Each player is dealt two cards face down. 2. The Flop. Three cards are dealt face up on the table. 3. The Turn. A fourth card is dealt to the table. 4. The River. Finally, a fifth card is dealt to the table. The five cards on the table are community cards. Your hand is formed by taking the best poker hand you can by using any five out of the seven cards (5

community + 2 hole cards). But remember, all the payers have access to the community cards. When played for money, there is a round of betting after a round of cards is dealt (so four rounds of betting in total).

Example Hand

1. Hole Cards: You are dealt AsQs. Your opponent checks to you. You decide to bet with this hand and one player calls. 2. The Flop: The board is Ad10c9s Right now, you have a pair of aces. You make a bet and the other player calls. 3. The Turn: 10s comes on the board. You know have two pairs, aces and tens. Be aware that if your opponent has a ten in his hole cards, he now has a three-of-a-kind. However, you also now have the potential of hitting a flush

if the river card is another spade. Again, you bet and the player calls. 4. The River: 2s comes on the river. The final board is Ad10c10s9s2s. You now have a flush. You make a bet and your opponent calls. 5. Showdown: You show your flush. Your opponent shows Jd10d so he has three-of-a-kind. You win.

Now the dealer deals again and we start a new hand and repeat the flop, turn and river. If you have any poker questions or would like to add to this column email wayne@bolsa-fiesta.com

Australia will not use England batsman Jonathan Trott's stressrelated withdrawal from the Ashes tour as sledging ammunition during the second Test, Australia coach Darren Lehmann has pledged. Lehmann stopped short on Saturday of condemning opening batsman David Warner, who labelled Trott's performance as "weak" during the first Test, prompting debate about the no-go zones of the intense rivalry between the two teams.

"We didn't know what was going on with Jonathan Trott," Lehmann said, ahead of the start of the Test at Adelaide Oval on Thursday. "And that certainly won't be talked about in this test match at all. We wish him all the best in his recovery."

Lehmann said he had counselled Warner, who later acknowledged he overstepped the line by questioning Trott's approach and performance. Warner said he wished the South African-born player a full and speedy recovery.

"We didn't know anything about the illness or whatnot," Warner told Australia's Fairfax Media. "It's sad to see anyone go through that tough period and if he's got an illness that's there we hope he gets

the right people to help him out. We know the worldclass kind of batter he is. He averages 50 in test cricekt and he has been a great player, a rock for England."

The taunting and sledging during Australia's first-test win in Brisbane reached such levels of spite that England coach Andy Flower suggested a meeting between the teams to agree limits on future verbal exchanges, but Lehmann rejected that as unnecessary.

Wales struggle in Autumn International

Wales' inability to translate Six Nations dominance into victories over the southern hemisphere superpowers continued as they slumped to a ninth successive defeat against Australia in a frantic finale to the autumn series in Cardiff. An early George North try and two Leigh Halfpenny penalties saw

Bale’s first hat trick for Real

Gareth Bale scored his first hat-trick in a Real Madrid shirt as the Spanish giants comfortably beat Real Valladolid to move within three points of La Liga leaders Barcelona. Cristiano Ronaldo missed the game with injury, giving Bale the chance to take centre stage. Indeed a lot of the pre-match focus was on whether Bale would be able to step up in Ronaldo's absence. The 24-year-old did so in style as he nodded in the opener before setting

the hosts lead 13-3, but Australia's attacking brilliance brought scores for Christian Leali'ifano and Israel Folau before the interval. A third try for Joe Tomane stretched the visitors' lead to 30-16 before North's second try and a Rhys Priestland penalty gave Wales hope of snatching victory.

In doing so they inflicted a 22nd defeat in 23 Tests on Wales against the Sanzar nations (South Africa, New Zealand, Australia) during coach Warren Gatland's tenure, and an 18th consecutive loss against the big three since they beat the Wallabies in 2008 at the end of his first year in charge.

14-year-old from Malaga goes to City

Sports Flash

Manchester City have won the battle for Brahim Abdelkader Diaz. The 14-year-old from Malaga has been dubbed 'the new Messi' it was revealed in October that City were fighting Barcelona for his signature. City have paid £300,000 up front for Diaz, with the final deal worth £2.4million depending on what he achieves at the club. Manuel Pellegrini raided his former club to capture Brahim, who is expected to be worth a remarkable £40m.

Malaga’s last gasp escape Just 16,000 fans watched the game as Malaga defender Weligton scored a header deep in injury time to snatch a 1-1 draw at Villarreal on Friday evening, bringing some joy for Bernd Schuster's side in the Spanish League. Bernd Schuster´s job as Malaga head coach looks to be hanging by a thread following a disastrous season thus far that has seen them lose five of their last seven games, winning just one. Malaga are currently in 14th place on 14 points, just one off the relegation zone. The Brazilian muscled by his marker to head a last-gasp corner kick into the net four minutes into stoppage time and ruin what would have equalled Villarreal's best ever start through 15 games.

Villarreal's draw left them in fourth place but they were down to fifth after all the results were in. Malaga edged two points above the relegation zone before the rest of the fixtures in this round of La Liga games. "When you don't win, it becomes a burden for the team," Weligton said. "But the team is united and the result was fair considering

the effort we put into it." Villarreal had gone ahead in the 32nd minute when Bruno Soriano volleyed Ruben "Cani" Gracia's low cross into the far side of the net. But Malaga managed to keep the hosts' normally vibrant attack quiet until their final push paid off. By Mike Kerrigan

Olympic swimmer Michael Jamieson 'had heart restarted' Olympic silver medallist swimmer Michael Jamieson says doctors had to restart his heart on Wednesday morning. The 25-year-old Scot revealed the news on social media site Twitter and said he had been cleared to resume training. Jamieson described his medical care at Royal United Hospital Bath as "amazing".

"Not really sure the reasons behind it happening, but I went into an irregular beat after reaching 203 heart rate in a session (max is 193)," said Jamieson. "Specialist said he's only seen this three times, all Olympic medallists – pretty cool!" Jamieson came to

prominence by finishing second in the 200m breaststroke at London 2012 and most recently won silver in the same event at the Beijing World Cup. A British Swimming spokesperson said: "Michael experienced a minor irregularity in his heart rhythm this week and was seen immediately by specialists. "He has been cleared to train following medical treatment and is already back in the water."
