Deadly tornadoes hit US Midwest states

Powerful tornadoes swept through the US Midwest over the weekend, destroying buildings and overturning vehicles in the states of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. At least eight people were killed and several hundred people were injured in the fast-moving storms, with winds of up to 68mph and hailstones the size of tennis balls reported in some areas.

An unknown number of people are feared trapped inside buildings. About 80 reports of tornadoes had come in by late Sunday, said the National Weather Service – though a spokesman cautioned that

multiple reporting meant the actual number might be about 30 or 40.

November is normally one of the quietest months in the tornado calendar, meaning the weekend's storms were unusually destructive for this time of year.

Six fatalities were reported in Illinois, the hardest hit state. Two others were killed in Michigan – a 21-year-old

Walkies

Last weekend we went on the PAD animal charity dog walk with puppy Jackson. It was a lovely day for walking along the prom from Sohail Castle to the port in Fuengirola and back again – not too hot and not too cold – and it was Jackson’s first real day out to get him used to other dogs and have a bit of a jolly. To start with he was a bit confused with all the other dogs around and barked his little head off but, once he’d got used to it all, was raring to go. All those new smells everywhere ... doggy bliss. We took him across the sand to have a look at the sea with which he was most unimpressed. He looked at me as if to say: “I go down to the river at home, it’s just a big river so what’s so exciting?” At least for the rest of the evening he slept and didn’t chase the cats. Worth it? You bet! There’s a report about it all on the Community News pages this week and I notice that we have a letter on page 27 from someone who also took part. If you fancy getting involved by helping out or just taking a dog for a walk now and again, or indeed giving a euro or two, call Lisa on 658 351 642 for more information. Now that all of you are totally sick of hearing about Jackson and dogs, onto other things... My cats... only kidding! Hasn’t it turned cold this last week? Up here in the sticks of Coin we had snow on the mountains on Monday morning. I think that may well be the earliest so far but I’m sure our local meteorologist Dangerous Ellis will be able to tell us all for sure. Gone are the summer frocks and sandals and in are the jumpers, fleeces, socks and boots. And that’s to say nothing of the coats, although I haven’t quite succumbed to hats and gloves yet but if it keeps up with this they won’t be longer than a week away. Brrr.

Another resident returned from a trip to find her home completely blown away by the tornado. "A lot of people have nothing but a pile of rubble," Michelle Cumrine told the AFP news agency. "I don't have anything. It's gone. I don't know where it went."

Tens of thousands of residents were without power in Michigan, Indiana and Kentucky, utility companies said. Parts of Wisconsin and Ohio were also hit by the storm. American football fans were evacuated from a stadium in the centre of Chicago as one tornado moved through the city suburbs.

All Saints Day, November 1st, and Constitution Day, December 6th, will no longer be holidays. All other national holidays – except New Year's Day, January 6th (Three Kings) and Christmas Day – will be transferred to the

Madrid street cleaners end their strike Street cleaners in Madrid voted on Sunday to accept an agreement – reached in a marathon overnight session between their unions and the city’s private contractors that finished at dawn – ending a nearly two-week-long strike that resulted in filth and garbage piled up throughout the capital.

The three companies FCC, OHL and Sacyr withdrew their plans to lay off 1,134 workers out of a total of 6,000 and dropped the number of layoffs to less than 300. The unions involved in the talks – the UGT, CCOO, CGT, USO and CSIF – agreed to allow each employee to take 45 days

per year of unpaid leave for the next four years.

During those periods, street cleaners will be allowed to collect unemployment benefits before returning to their jobs. They also agreed to salary and hiring freezes for the next four years. Street cleaners earn between €500 to €1,300 a month, depending on the amount of shift work they do. Union sources said the three contractors have also agreed not to plan any more layoffs or modify the terms of the initial agreement until the fouryear period expires. Mayor Ana Botella had given the contractors and

was released. At least 19 people had been arrested during the strike for

No-one responsible Environmental activists in court for the Prestige oil disaster

Four men could face long prison sentences if convicted of throwing pies at Navarre regional president Yolanda Barcina Angulo in Toulouse, France, where she was taking part in a public meeting in October 2011. Barcina was left "dazed and disorientated" and her clothes were damaged, the court was told. The men were protesting against the development of a highspeed train network that threatens forest land in the Pyrenees. The four men – Gorka Ovejero Gamboa, Julio Martín Villanueva, Ibón García Garrido and Mikel Álvarez Forcada – belong to Mugitu, an environmental activist group which carries out non-violent protests against the rail plans.

The prosecution has asked for a jail sentence of nine years for Ovejero and six years for the other

three. Their defence lawyer, Gonzalo Boye, told reporters the case reveals the very worst side of the Spanish judicial system: "It shows a corrupt judicial and political class prepared to use public resources to try people that have done nothing more than demonstrate their opposition to the destruction of the forest." He said if the men were convicted, "the court will look like a tribunal during the Inquisition rather than a modern court of law," because it had

rejected all the eyewitnesses called by the defence, only accepting the evidence of two Spanish policemen who were not present during the incident.

The activists said they had not intended to cause physical injury and wanted only to highlight their cause and mock "the image of authority represented" by Barcina. Four Frenchmen involved in the stunt face no charges in France or Spain.

A court in A Coruna, Galicia, has failed to find anyone directly guilty of causing the worst-ever environmental disaster in the country's history. The oil tanker Prestige sank off the coast of A Coruna in November 2002, splitting up after being kept out at sea for six days following its first call for help. It spilled 50,000 tonnes of oil, polluting thousands of miles of coast.

The ship's Greek captain and chief engineer, and the head of merchant shipping in Spain at the time, Jose Luis Lopez-Sors, were acquitted but the court found the 78-year-old captain, Apostolos Mangouras, guilty of disobeying the Spanish authorities during the crisis. He was sentenced to nine months in prison – a term he will not serve because of his advanced age. A fourth defendant, the ship's Philippine second officer, is on the run. The

judge said in a nationally televised reading of the sentence from the court: "Nobody knows with exactitude what might have been the cause of what happened, nor what would have been the appropriate response to the emergency situation created by the Prestige's breakdown." As a result of the court's decision, the Spanish state will not be liable for the disaster. Court documents had put the total financial cost of the spillage at €4 billion. The verdict dismayed environmentalists.

Greenpeace's campaigns director in Spain, Maria Jose Caballero, said in a statement: "The sentence shows that in Spain we are not ready to judge an environmental catastrophe, neither to condemn it nor to defend the environment."

A spokesman for Nunc Mais, a group representing the victims of the disaster, said the verdict "does not do justice to the conduct of Galician society and the thousands of volunteers who came out here to clean up our coast".

UK's most-wanted sought in Spain Thirteen of Britain's mostwanted criminals, believed to be on the run in Spain, were named last week in Madrid by the charity Crimestoppers, the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and Spanish police, as part of Operation Captura aimed at tracing criminals who are in hiding.

This is the eighth appeal since Captura was launched in 2006, and so far 53 out of 63 named suspects have been caught. Crimestoppers has dubbed the group the "unlucky 13". The list includes Robert Mortby, 26, from London, suspected of attempted murder, and Brian Thexton, 37, from Durham, accused of being part of gang of robbers, and paedophile Michael

From left to right: McCartney, Blundell and Willis

McCartney, 78, from Letchworth, Hertfordshire, who was convicted of abusing three boys.

Founder of Crimestoppers Lord Ashcroft said: “Despite our success so far, there are still a number of dangerous criminals who see Spain as a safe haven to hide from their past, but with the support of the Spanish and UK public, we can hunt them out and

bring them to justice.”

Hank Cole, from the NCA, said: “Spain is not a safe haven. Fifty-three fugitives have been caught since Captura was launched, and many more linked to other operations.

“The most important thing though is the power of this campaign to harness the eyes and ears of the public, both here and in Spain.”

Repsol plan to prospect for oil

In a 30-page document sent to the judge investigating the so called Nóos case, public prosecutor Pedro Horrach has stated that there is no evidence linking Princess Cristina to her husband's alleged siphoning off of public money to his own companies. Horrach also stated that he was not trying to

cover up anyone but was working within the law and ignoring media coverage of the case. “If, in the course of these investigations, this prosecutor, as a member of the corruption and organised crime office, had detected evidence of criminal activity against Cristina de Borbón, I would have initiated

the requisite judicial mechanisms,” he said. He added: “If any citizen has evidence or knowledge of any illicit activity or covering up on the part of this prosecutor, they should go to the authorities and file a complaint. If they do not do so, they should refrain from speculating about the existence of confabulations on the part of certain

people carrying out their duties."

Urdangarin and his former partner Diego Torres are accused of skimming €6 million of public money from inflated contracts awarded by the regional governments of Valencia and the Balearics to stage sports and tourism events, some of which never took place.

King's yacht gesture backfires King Juan Carlos' gesture aimed at improving the Royal image earlier this year by renouncing his yacht has backfired and landed taxpayers with a hefty €1.2m bill which a court has ruled is owed to the crew for illegal dismissal.

The money will come from the Patrimonio Nacional, Spain's

equivalent of the civil list. The 41.6-metre yacht, called Fortuna, was a gift from a consortium of businessmen in the Balearic islands.

Each contributed €600,000 to cover its cost of €21 million and they now plan to recoup some of their outlay by selling the vessel. During court proceedings, it emerged

that the captain had a salary of €138,000, almost double that of the prime minister. The only work he did in 2012 was to take the yacht out once, to ensure the engines were still running. The captain will receive €133,789 while seven crew members, who had an average salary of €60,000, will get over €100,000

each. The captain of a Spanish merchant marine vessel earns around €70,000 a year, while an ordinary seaman earns €1,500 a month.

Fortuna was moored in Mallorca and used mainly for photo opportunities of the king relaxing on board with his family and visiting dignitaries.

repsol will start prospecting for oil in waters off the Canary islands in May next year, providing that the government grants all the necessary environmental permits. the announcement by repsol chairman antonio Brufau last week triggered a new episode in the ongoing war being waged by island authorities against the project. they fear that in case of an accident, the environmental impact would be disastrous for the areas of the islands with a high ecological value and huge potential for eco-tourism. Brufau flew to the islands last week to remind residents of the potential wealth lying under their waters, and to ask for permission to set up operating bases in their ports. He said that if any Cabildos (island councils) turned repsol down, they would regret it in the future. He added that the company just might take its business to Morocco. “we are not contemplating it for now," he said, "but this is a global world.”

Catholics believe in end to privileges

in a recent survey, more than half of practising Catholics questioned said they believed that the institutional privileges enjoyed by the Church should be ended. the survey also showed that 51 per cent of practising Catholics believe that "a family should no longer refer exclusively to one based on a relationship between a man and a woman". while the bishops refuse to accept adoption by homosexuals, which is now legal in Spain, 55 per cent of practising Catholics believe that the Church needs to accept that a "same-sex couple is as well prepared as a heterosexual couple to bring up a child". Just over 80 per cent of practising Catholics accept divorce and are in favour of speeding up processes to allow couples to separate. despite the fact that the Constitution makes it clear that Spain is a secular state, the Church is exempted from paying sales or property tax, while the state pays the salaries of 3,000 religious education teachers, and the Catholic catechism is still taught in public schools.

World News Spying damages ties with Indonesia

Indonesia's president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Monday that ties with Australia have been "damaged" by reports that Canberra spied on his phone calls and those of his ministers.

He said it was a "hurtful action" and that Australia had "belittled" the row. Australian PM Tony Abbott said he regretted "any embarrassment" caused by the reports. "I regard President Yudhoyono as a good friend of Australia, indeed as one of the very best friends that we have anywhere in the world," he said, speaking in parliament on Tuesday.

However, he added: "I don't believe that Australia should be expected to apologise for reasonable intelligencegathering operations, just as I don't expect other countries or other governments to apologise for their reasonable intelligence-gathering operations." The allegations published by Australian media came

from documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden. The alleged spying took place in 2009, under the previous government. Australia and Indonesia are key allies and trading partners.

Australia requires Indonesia's co-operation on asylum, as many asylum seekers travel via

Indonesia to Australia by boat, but there are tensions on the issue. Earlier this month, Indonesia declined an Australian request to receive a boat of asylum seekers whose vessel, bound for Australia's Christmas Island, had got into trouble after it departed from Indonesia.

Search on for Paris gunman Hundreds of French police are searching for a man who attacked the head offices of the newspaper Liberation, critically wounding a photographer, and fired shots outside the HQ of the Societe Generale bank on Monday. Images of the man – white, aged 35 to 45, about 5ft 8in tall, with

stubble and greying hair – have been found on CCTV and issued by police.

The man disappeared after taking hostage a motorist, who was forced to drive him to the Champs Elysees. The gunman told his hostage he had recently been released from prison.

Police believe the same man broke into the offices of the BFMTV news channel on Friday, threatening staff with a gun, and emptying the chamber of his gun in the reception area. "Next time, I will not miss you," the man said to an editor he threatened. The offices of major media organisations

in Paris were placed under police protection after the attack on the Liberation newspaper on Monday morning. French President Francois Hollande said it was a priority to "stop this man who has tried to kill and could kill again". The gunman has not been identified and his motive is unclear.

Cyclone and flooding kill 14

At least 14 people died after a cyclone, accompanied by heavy rains, tore through the Italian island of Sardinia. A Brazilian family of four died in Arzachena, in the far north-east of the island, and another three people died when a road bridge collapsed on to their car near Olbia. In a separate incident, a mother and her daughter were found dead in their car after it was swept away by floods. Among the victims was a police officer who died after a bridge collapsed. The worst-hit area appears to be in and around the north-eastern city of Olbia. Hundreds of people across the island were evacuated from their homes. Some city residents used social media to offer shelter to those forced out of their homes. The storms also caused extensive damage to farms on the island and disrupted a number of flights to and from mainland Italy. Cyclones are extremely rare in the Mediterranean.

Toronto mayor loses more powers

The Toronto city council voted on Monday to strip Mayor rob Ford of most of his authority, as the embattled city leader resists growing pressure to step down. The council transferred most of Mr Ford's budget and many of his powers to the deputy mayor Norm Kelly, largely making Mr Ford mayor in name only. Mr Ford, 44, who has sworn to fight the council's decisions, criticised the vote as a "coup d'etat". The mayor of Canada's largest city has faced intense pressure to resign after admitting to smoking crack cocaine. In recent weeks he has also acknowledged buying illegal drugs while serving as mayor. Mr Ford abstained from Monday's vote, but promised "outright war" in the next election against the councillors who opposed him. He also refused to apologise, saying he had done enough apologising already. "What's happening here today is not a democratic process, this is a dictatorship," he told the city councillors.

Migrant workers 'treated like animals'

Qatar's construction sector is rife with abuse, Amnesty International (AI) has said in a report published as work begins on Fifa World Cup 2022 stadiums. Amnesty said migrant workers are often subjected to non-payment of wages, dangerous working conditions and squalid accommodation, saying that one manager had referred to workers as "animals". Amnesty said it conducted interviews with 210 workers, employers and government officials, which includes testimony from Nepalese workers employed by a company delivering supplies to a construction project associated with the planned Fifa headquarters. The workers said they were "treated like cattle", working up to 12 hours a day, seven days a week, including during Qatar's hot summer months. More than 1,000 people were admitted to the trauma unit at Doha's main hospital in 2012 having fallen from height at work, Amnesty said, citing an unnamed doctor Some 10% were disabled as a result and the mortality rate was "significant", AI said.

Bank for women opened Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the country's first ever state-owned bank for women in the western city for Mumbai on Tuesday. The Bharatiya Mahila Bank, which will have seven branches, will employ women, accept deposits from and lend mostly to women. The bank plans to open 500 branches all over India by 2017. Just 26% of women in India have an account with a formal financial institution, compared with 46% of men. A bank spokesman said both men and women can open accounts but the bank will be predominantly for women in accepting deposits and giving loans. He said the main objective will be to empower and educate women financially. Only 35% of Indians have access to banking services against a global average of 50%. There are only around 100,000 bank branches in India and a large number of the country's more than 650,000 villages do not have a single bank.

Chile election goes to second round

Former president Michelle Bachelet won the first round of voting in Chile's presidential election on Sunday but failed to reach an outright majority and avoid a run-off. She took nearly 47% of the vote. Her main rival, Evelyn Matthei, who was a minister in the centre-right government of Sebastian Pinera, got 25%. A second round of voting will take place on 15th December. Most opinion polls had indicated a victory for Ms Bachelet in the first round.

A paediatrician by training, Ms Bachelet, 62, was Chile's first woman president between 2006 and 2010. She was constitutionally barred from serving a second successive term and was very popular when she left office. She leads an alliance of her Socialist Party, Christian Democrats and Communists and has campaigned on policies designed to reduce the gap between rich and poor. might be. The treasure trove, estimated to be worth ÂŁ846 million, includes works by Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, long thought to have been lost or destroyed. The works were discovered in Mr Gurlitt's home in March 2012 during a routine tax inspection. Mr Gurlitt's father, Hildebrand, was a dealer who sold art which had been confiscated or bought by the Nazis.

However, he kept many works for himself. Jewish groups have complained at the length of time it took the German authorities to unveil the artworks. Their existence emerged at the beginning of November.

Jewish families and museums say the paintings were taken from them by the Nazis and are calling for them to be returned. The works are being held at an undisclosed location.

No plans to lower age of consent, says Cameron British Prime Minister David Cameron has said that the Government has no plans to consider lowering the age of consent for sex to 15.

His announcement came after Professor John Ashton, President of the Faculty of Public Health, called for a national debate after official figures suggested that that up to a

third of teenagers had sex before present age of consent at 16.

Some observers have suggested that lowering the age of consent would make it easier for 15-yearolds who are in a sexual relationship to obtain contraception and advice on sexual health from Britain’s National Health Service.

Chancellor urged to act on business property Chancellor George Osborne has been urged by British industry to cap business rate rises (the tax on commercial property) at two per cent next year and offer a one-year rates holiday for firms moving into vacant buildings to boost the economy. The Confederation of British Industry wants to see reform of the present system which alarmingly

taxes even the owners of empty business premises, distorting the market and discouraging investment in the sector. Director General John Cridland said the CBI wanted to ensure that windows were opened up rather than boarded up and suggested the Government should show it is willing to take steps to reform a damaging system.

Job cuts for airline

While international carriers seem to have recovered from the ravages of world economic instability, regional airlines are still suffering. In Britain Flybe has confirmed the closure of six regional bases and announced hundreds of job cuts.

While the economic recovery appears to be well under way, it has not been reflected in tickets sales and Flybe bases at Aberdeen, Guernsey, Inverness, Isle of Man, Jersey and Newcastle will be shut down although the airline will continue to fly to these destinations. Most job losses will be at the airline’s headquarters at Exeter in Devon. Flybe connects the regions and islands of the UK and it is feared restructuring could harm the local economy.

Nationwide boost The improvement in the British housing market has been reflected in a surge in profits at the Nationwide Building Society. The customer-owned mutual saw mortgage lending rise 37 per cent for the half year and it has also attracted many new current account customers.

The Nationwide says its success shows that mutuals can be successful in retail banking. The figures come as good news following the difficulties experienced at the Co-operative Banking Group.

Landmark visit to UK by Irish President

President Michael D Higgins is to become the first Irish head of state to make an official state visit to the UK.

The Queen formally invited the President and his wife Sabina to stay with the royals at Windsor Castle next April 8th. Aras an Uachtarain – the President's official residence in Dublin – has confirmed they have accepted the invitation. The groundbreaking three-day State visit follows the Queen's hugely successful trip to Ireland in May 2011. In remarkable scenes, the Queen paid her respects to republican dead at Dublin's Garden of Remembrance, visited Croke Park – site of the

1920 Bloody Sunday massacre – and made a widely-praised speech on Anglo-Irish history at Dublin Castle. In what is considered a pivotal moment in relations between both countries, the invite to Ireland from former president Mary McAleese paved the way for a reciprocal invite for her successor to the UK.

A number of meetings between Mr Higgins – a former Labour government minister, a poet and academic – and members of the Royal family have taken place since his election. Both he and his wife met the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in June last year at Belfast's Lyric Theatre.

O’Neil and Keane make good start With the international break effecting Barclays Premier League fixtures all eyes have been on the national sides and the management of the Republic of Ireland has been of particular interest. The side has an accomplished manager in Martin O’Neill and his assistant manager is Manchester United legend Roy Keane, who is renowned for his nononsense approach to soccer. So how did the deadly duo do? Well, they won their friendly against Latvia 3-0. It was a good start and promises a lot for the future, although there will be sterner tests. The

Republic of Ireland has done well under good managers in the past, including England World Cup medal winner Jack Charlton. Meanwhile England fielded a weaker team than usual against Chile at Wembley, giving manager Roy Hodgson the opportunity to take a look at some fringe players against top class opposition. England competed for parts of the match, but Chile ran out 2-0 winners, both goals coming from Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez. “We learned a lot about South American opposition,” said Hodgson.

Likewise, previous meetings between the Queen and President McAleese and her predecessor Mary Robinson at various functions in the UK were not official State visits. Next year's trip will the first time an Irish head of state has been formally invited to the UK by a British sovereign.

Although the official programme is yet to be finalised, it is expected Mr and Mrs Higgins will stay at Windsor Castle and will pay official visits to the Prime Minister at Downing Street as well as the leader of the Opposition.

In line with other State visits to the UK, it is anticipated the Lord Mayor of the City of London will host a banquet for the President.

Sources said the programme will reflect the political, economic and cultural relations between the UK and Ireland. A concert may also be held to mark the occasion. During the Queen's trip to Ireland, she was entertained by The Chieftains, Westlife, XFactor singer Mary Byrne and Riverdance during an hour-long extravaganza at Dublin's Convention Centre.

It is also expected the Queen will host a State banquet for the President next April, during which both heads of state will make speeches.

How simple it is to change lawyers

Are you unhappy with your present lawyer? Don’t they answer your emails and calls promptly? Are their fees going up? Do you feel that your lawyer is ignoring you? If so, don’t delay, it’s obviously time to change lawyers.

Last century, the cultivation of sugar cane gave employment to around 5,000 in the Axarquía, For one reason or another that crop disappeared and now there are plans to introduce another "sweet" crop – stevia, a plant that is native to South America where people have used it as a sweetener and medicine for hundreds of years.

A group of farmers have set up the Stevia Producers Association of the Costa del Sol-Axarquía and hope to start planting in the near future. President Leovigildo Martín said he was convinced that the Axarquía, which had the first sugar producing factory in Spain, in Torre

del Mar, "will also become the first place in Spain to produce stevia".

Stevia has a natural life of five years and can yield three or crops a year. Martin said one family could live comfortably off a half-hecatre of stevia. He recommends starting with 1,000 plants which could yield up to $30,000 in earnings and provide work for a whole family. He said half a hectare could sustain 35,000 plants eventually but advised starting off more modestly to get experience in planting, reaping and preparing the stevia.

In foods, stevia is used as a non-caloric sweetener and flavour enhancer. It was originally available as a "dietary supplement" in

the U.S. and wasn’t allowed as a “food additive” until 2008, when the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status to rebaudioside A, one of the chemicals in stevia that makes it sweet. Stevia is also available as a sweetener in Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Russia, Israel, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina.

Many of our clients were afraid to make this change because they thought it would be difficult and long winded, and that it may have been expensive. Some simply thought that as the lawyer was in possession of all of their personal documents that they may not get them back when making the change.

However, you must be aware that a client’s file, which contains all the personal details and documents of the client, i.e. Property Deeds, Wills, Power of Attorneys, Tax forms, Bills, and other documents related to the client, is THE PROPERTY OF THE CLIENT, NOT THE LAWYER. Therefore, it is the client’s right to ask for it whenever they wish. The lawyer has no right to deny this nor

should they charge anything for returning your property.

It’s quite a simple and quick process; once you have decided that you wish to retrieve your file and transfer it to another lawyer, you merely need to sign a letter authorising your new lawyer to recover your file together with all of your documents. The new lawyer will contact your former lawyer, and with the authorisation will arrange the collection of your complete file.

As you can see it is not complicated, nor is it time consuming, and it does not entail any risk for the client. In fact, if you are not satisfied with the service you are presently receiving, it would be a positive, safer option for you.

Melilla illegally returning migrants from Spain El Pais newspaper has obtained a recording of a conversation between two Guardia Civil who allegedly carried out an “on-the-spot handover” of migrants – something that happens regularly, according to a source involved in such operations, which are illegal. The government delegate in Melilla, Abdelmalik el Barkani, denies that such practices exist.

Article 23 of royal decree 557 of 2011 that implements the Aliens Act stipulates that foreigners who enter Spain irregularly will be taken “as quickly as

possible to the corresponding police headquarters so the procedures for their identification and, where applicable, their return can be carried out”. They will have the “right to legal assistance, as well as the assistance of a translator”. But according to El Pais, in Melilla these procedures are not always carried out.

Between 20 and 30 per cent of the immigrants who the government delegation estimates succeed in entering the enclave at every mass attempt to scale the security fence are never admitted to the local

temporary immigrant holding centre (CETI). This discrepancy can only be explained by the fact that they are arrested between the fence and police headquarters, after which they are expelled to Morocco. Melilla command headquarters tells the Guardia Civil who take part in these handovers that they are protected by the 1992 SpanishMoroccan agreement on the “readmission of foreigners who enter illegally”. Article 2 of the agreement stipulates certain administrative identification procedures that are not carried out in

Melilla. Several law experts also state that the Geneva Convention on Refugees, to which Spain is a signatory, is also not being complied with. The “on-the-spot” handovers not only reduce the number of immigrants but also act as a deterrent to those waiting to cross the border in the mountains around Melilla, serving the same function as the concertinas of razor and barbed wire that by the end of the month will be placed along three of the 12 kilometres of the Melilla fence, where the most attempts to jump the border take place.

Spain's Gibraltar checks are deemed lawful

Checks by Spain at its border with Gibraltar did not break EU laws, the European Commission has ruled.

Madrid imposed strict controls at the border with the British territory after the creation of an artificial reef in disputed waters. The commission, which assessed the legality of the checks on September 25th, advised the UK and Spain to work better together to help fight tobacco smuggling and crossborder crime. Cigarettes are about 40% cheaper in Gibraltar than they are in Spain, which has fuelled an illegal trade. Spain has said the border checks were intended to combat this smuggling. The Spanish government has said it seized 139 million illegal cigarettes smuggled in from Gibraltar last year – double the figure for 2009. The report gives both sides six months to

respond to the recommendations, and Brussels "reserves the right" to revise its view on the legality of Spanish action and "pay another visit" to the SpainGibraltar crossing point if necessary. The commission said that the crossing point was "challenging, in view of the heavy traffic volumes in a relatively confined space and the increase in tobacco smuggling into Spain". In its letter to Spain, the commission recommends it makes better use of existing traffic lanes or adds new lanes on the Spanish side of the border and uses more targeted checks "to reduce the large amount of random border controls".

In its letter to the UK,

the commission recommends the development of risk-based profiling of travellers and improved laws and safeguards against tobacco smuggling.

Both countries were asked to develop an "exchange of information" with each other about tobacco smuggling. A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We welcome the fact that the commission has put Spain on notice. We continue to believe that Spain has acted unlawfully." He added that despite the commission not finding evidence that EU law was infringed it "is not the same as concluding that Spain had not acted unlawfully". And he said the UK did "not rule out

taking direct legal action against the Spanish government" at the European Court of Justice over the border delays. The Gibraltar government said it also still considered the checks to be unlawful, but said the recommendations made by the commission represented progress.

Sir Graham Watson, a Lib Dem MEP for the South West of England and Gibraltar, said he was "deeply disappointed" the commission considered no laws were breached. Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said Madrid was "satisfied because Brussels has signalled that we did not break any community rules by establishing those controls at the Gibraltar border".

Corruption a la Socialist

I

never cease to ask myself why the national media say so little about Socialist corruption, especially with the ERE scandal in Seville, where the judge's investigations are spilling over into the trade unions. Apparently the latter have been having a high old time – attending meetings in the Caribbean, living it up at the Seville Feria and charging it, as well as many other things, to the Junta de Andalucia, which pays up without a murmur. And yet little is said or written about this in Madrid. Can it be true that the Madrileños despise the Andaluces so much that we don't merit a mention?

I

feel I owe our readers a more detailed report on the ERE scandal and the unions' shenanigans but quite frankly I think you would end up as bewildered as I am. There are so many ramifications it's almost impossible to keep up with them. However, I keep an eye open every day when I surf through the newspapers online – hoping to find an article titled "All you need to know about corruption in Andalusia". I promise I'll share it with you – if I ever find it.

A

ll I can say for the moment is that ERE is a fund which was set up to help companies who wanted to downsize but couldn't afford it. Under the old labour law, workers were entitled to very hefty severance pay which a company on the verge of bankruptcy simply couldn't afford. So they could apply for help to ERE. However, ERE funds were given to individuals – like one Junta official who spent around €45,000 a month on cocaine and prostitutes, according to his driver who also enjoyed the ERE's largesse. Other considerable amounts of money were given to companies that only existed on paper. It's a real mess and getting messier, as the judge in charge of the case, Mercedes Ayala, digs deeper and deeper into this bottomless cesspool of corruption called Seville.

B

ut what can you expect from a region that could be called the second great dictatorship in recent Spanish history? Franco ruled Spain with an iron hand from the end of the Civil War in April 1939 to his death in November 1975 – 36 and a half years – and the Socialists have been top dog in Andalusia since it became an autonomous region on February 28th, 1981 – going on for 33 years. No other party has governed so long in any of the other 17 regions that make up Spain.

H

owever, getting back to corruption, I can offer little titbits like this one – there are 171 Socialist mayors and former mayors in Andalusia who have been tried or are currently under investigation for corrupt practices. Another 47 have already been tried and found guilty. Seville is the province with the most corrupt current and former mayors – 36 – followed by Granada – 33 – and, sadly, Malaga, with 30. Cordoba is the most honest province, with just six cases.

B

ut let's go north, to the Basque country, where there are some unsettling developments. The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg recently overturned what is known as the Parot doctrine, so named after the Supreme Court reviewed the case of Basque ETA terrorist Henri Parot who had been sentenced in 1990 to serve several thousands of years for numerous murders and other crimes, Under the 1995 penal law he was about to be set free for good behaviour but the public outcry was such that the Court decided in 2006 that reductions would no longer apply to the accumulative maximum sentence of 30 years, but to the absolute total term of the sentence. This was successfully challenged by another ETA terrorist, Ines del Rio Prado who, in 1997 was sentenced to serve 3828 years. Under the old law she was eligible for release in 2008, but the Supreme Court applied the Parot Doctrine and ordered her to be detained in prison until 2017. Strasbourg ruled that legal standards were being applied to her which were not in force when she committed the offences and demanded her immediate release about three weeks ago. She and several other ETA prisoners, plus two rapists and a murderer have since been set free, and guess what? Some of the ETA terrorists were greeted by crowds yelling "assassin" when they walked out of jail and they are now complaining of harassment.

P

oor darlings. Del Rio herself was involved in the deaths of 25 people and the others who have been released were involved in at least three and as many as 22 murders of Guardia Civil, politicians and innocent bystanders. If that's not being an assassin, what is?

I

www.thenewsonline.es

hope the revulsion most Spaniards feel about this will not lead to ETA victims and their families forming death squads to right what they consider to be a terrible wrong.

What we could have had Writes for the English language version of

I

t is difficult to say what the world would be like if John F. Kennedy had lived. Of course, he would have won his 1964 re-election bid, and perhaps the landmark Civil Rights Act would no doubt have been passed one year before it was actually enacted – a ruling that still divides many US citizens. But from there, the rest is speculation.

I

was less than two years old when my father, a government employee at the time, surprised my mother by coming home early that Friday, at around 2pm. Mom was busy talking with my aunt on the phone, so the line was tied up and Dad couldn’t get through. The rest of the kids were off to school on that last day of the week. Just less than 24 hours before the assassination, Dad met briefly with the president, and Jackie at San Antonio’s International Airport after their plane touched down for a brief stopover as part of the Democratic Party campaign swing aimed at trying to settle ideological divisions between members of the far and centre-left wings. The party was a mess in those days and the rifts had divided the Democrats into two battling factions. Actually, it wasn’t a brief meeting, but instead a handshake and a few words exchanged, recalls Dad who was very close friends with Democratic US Rep. Henry B. González, one of the first Hispanic and longest serving leaders (1961-1999) in Congress. As a powerful Democratic Party member, Henry B. invited my Dad to participate in the Kennedy welcoming ceremonies.

I

t’s hard to imagine what direction the Vietnam War would have taken if JFK had not been assassinated. According to his official

position, Kennedy wanted to find a quick solution to the Southeast Asia conflict, which would probably not have involved sending more troops to the troubled region or aerial bombings of North Vietnam and Cambodia as his successor Lyndon Johnson had done at the behest of the Washington war hawks. We know now from different testimonies and statements that the warmongering military was eager to get the United States involved in a new conflict and that the joint chiefs of staff suggested to Kennedy that the bombing of Cuba was necessary to prevent the build-up of Soviet nuclear arms on the island during the missile crisis of 1962. Kennedy refused and the world was saved from a nuclear holocaust. Would he have also rebuffed the military in Vietnam strategy?

T

he young president’s position in global politics – with the help of his beautiful wife Jackie – would have also opened new horizons for US foreign policy. Kennedy was interested in what other nations were doing and how the United States could offer its help. He formed the Alliance for Progress – a short-lived regional aid programme aimed at deflecting the growing Communist influence in Latin America. The president believed that by building schools and giving citizens in the region better health care with US dollars, they would not be enticed into going the Marxist route. Initially, the Alliance for Progress seemed to be working but the programme wasn’t given the chance to foster before it quickly faded away after his death.

Community News Symphonic Rapture fit for a Queen

Last year I went to Queen's Symphonic Rhapsody at the Cervantes Theatre in Malaga and, when I saw it was on again this year, I decided to go and see if the experience could live up to last year's. INDUBITABLY was the answer! As the 7 o'clock concert sold out quickly, another was staged at 10 p.m. and, despite the late hour on a Sunday night, the theatre was almost full.

If, or more probably when, this show returns to Malaga, I cannot recommend it highly enough. This is not your usual Queen tribute band. I did see one of those in Marbella a few years ago and they were very good.

However, this is a completely different experience. There is a small orchestra, four amazing backing vocalists, the "rock band" whose guitarist was mindblowingly skilled and, at the same time, remarkably jaunty. Then, there are the four main singers. Each brings their own special talent to the show. None could be singled out as better than the others. The soprano's voice was so strong that, for a moment, I worried that she would overpower her partner's voice in Barcelona, my all time favourite. I worried in vain. Their rendition was impeccable and sent shivers up my spine. All the favourites were performed and the

audience was on its feet at many stages throughout the concert. There was humour and also, inevitably, sadness.

The screen which was lowered in front of the orchestra for some of the numbers showed images of flowers opening into bloom on some occasions and harrowing images of poverty, war and suffering on others. All tied into the music and left plenty of food for thought. This was a truly impressive show on many levels. (Well worth staying up for long after my normal bedtime.) No doubt they will be back. Keep a look out for them. written by Poppy Malone

Cancer Sucks Spain Walkies makes Cancer Sucks Spain is a facebook group that started about three months ago. We have over 100 members who benefit from having a group where they are able to chat, vent, scream or offer advice. Our group is open to anyone who has been affected by cancer. Many of our members have become close and offer each other support in many ways. As the group began to grow we thought it would be nice to have a coffee morning to meet up and chat which we did a few times – this has resulted in the AECC in Carvajal inviting us to hold our meetings at their venue.

This is wonderful news for us as the AECC is a

Spanish support organisation and our group will be able to benefit from many of their services such as yoga classes, massage etc. They also offer many other services and this is a wonderful opportunity for us to merge more with the Spanish. We have meetings every other Friday. The next meetings are on 22nd November, 6th and 20th December. The address of the AECC is as follows: Paseo Maritimo, no. 136, Carvajal, the opposite end of Fuengirola to the castle.

We have a Spanish doctor of haematology on board – she is great help to us and a fountain of knowledge. She is willing to offer her services and advice to our members and we are very lucky to have her. You will be surprised when chatting to her the kind of things you are entitled to. We also have a physiotherapist who specialises in the

treatment of Lymphoedema secondary to cancer.

Many people who have had treatment for cancer are not made aware of the risk factors of developing Lymphoedema. Others may not even know what it is! Not everyone who has had cancer is at risk but if you have had a lymph node dissection you are at risk. She can give specialist advice on how to prevent Lymphoedema. For those who are living with the condition she is available for assessments, treatments and advice on how to manage the condition in the long term. Please join our facebook group Cancer Sucks Spain so as to benefit from regular support and information. Alternatively you can email cancersucksspain@outlook .com if you have any questions or would like to know about future meeting dates.

charity cash

Sunday saw this year’s PAD animal charity walk along the prom.

Starting at the Castle Sohail humans and dogs set off at noon, some dogs resplendent in their PAD yellow neckerchiefs, on a walk that took them along the Paseo Maritimo in Fuengirola all the way to the port. Along the way, collection tins were rattled and passersby donated their hard-earned cash to help the animals. The total so far has been around €1750 which is pretty good for these austere times.

The News’ owners’ little dog, Jackson, took part along with everyone else and, having never been to such an event before settled down for his first long walkies quickly. A couple of the PAD dogs taking part had also not been among such company Ground floor La Trocha C.C. Coin

before and all did very well indeed.

The walk, of course, took longer than it would normally as everybody wanted to talk and pet the dogs while giving whatever they could.

More help for Mizzy

The Natural Horsemanship Association of Coin held a very successful dinner dance last weekend in aid of their rescue horse, Mizzy – an abused and abandoned young mare left to die with an untreated wound. The evening made a grand total of 659 euros, proceeds from the threecourse meal and raffle. Entertainment was provided by the one and only Frankie B who got everyone up and dancing. For main courses there’s a choice of 23 different dishes including four choices for strict vegetarians, 10 for those that fancy something to do with fish and nine choices for meat eaters. For the veggies there’s quiche lorraine with chips and peas, cheese salads, vegetable curry or lasagne, or a delicious vegetarian burger.

The Counselor Directed by Ridley Scott Starring: Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz With Ridley Scott at the helm, a glittering cast of A listers and a first time screenplay from Pullitzer Prize winner Cormac MacCarthy (whose work, including No Country for Old Men, has frequently made it to the big screen) the appetite had been whetted for a movie of both style and substance.

But the critics have been on the whole disappointed – there’s plenty of style, glossy high production values, bloodshed and violence – but not the sort of substance that marks this out as a potential classic.

Fassbender plays the nameless title character the Counsellor. He is in desperate need of cash and finds himself seduced into the one-off big money drug trafficking deal. Pitt plays Westray – the white cowboy hat-wearing middleman – who draws the Counsellor into this violent world, where,

The hunger games: CaTChing Fire Directed by Francis Lawrence

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Donald Sutherland, Philip Seymour Hoffman The first in this series of movies based on the trilogy of books by Suzanne Collins was a mega box office hit around the world, and the second outing will probably rake in even more takings.

inevitably, nothing goes to plan.

The movie is populated with dynamic characters – Pitt, Bardem as the seedy nightclub owner Reiner with Diaz as his amoral and dangerous girlfriend, and Cruz as the Counsellor’s gorgeous fiancée – and there are many wildly colourful moments. Whether the moments add up to a whole to take

this movie beyond a simple crime tale is what’s at question.

But if you are looking for a tough-guy crime thriller, stylishly directed, with an ensemble cast performing at their peak in atmospheric settings then this is a must-see, but the squeamish may want to avert their gaze during some of the more violent moments.

So confident are the studio of its success that a decision has already been taken to film the last book in two parts – like Harry Potter – and keep fans champing at the bit for the next instalments in this exciting and hugely popular saga. For those new to the plot our characters inhabit postApocalyptic North America, now called Panem, which is ruled by the malevolent President Snow (Sutherland).

Teenagers win rations for their neighbours and families by competing in a reality- televised fight to the death which is designed as a distraction for the downtrodden residents of the outlying districts. In the first movie Katniss Everdeen

(Lawrence) shared victory in the 74th annual games with Peeta (Hutcherson).

Since then she has become an icon, a celebrity who is taking part in a victory tour of Panem with Peeta and receiving the adulation of the crowds. But this makes for unrest, and Snow, alert to their growing popularity, wants to eliminate them. Media chief Plutarch Heavensbee (Seymour Hoffman) suggests a simple solution. Katniss will now be drafted to take part in a

special Hunger Games, featuring previous winners, and will be revealed as a self-seeking celeb, thereby losing the support of the people.

Stanley Tucci reprises his role as a syrupy show compère and as the games get under way a colourful supporting cast of fighters is revealed. It’s a pacy blockbuster with well constructed dialogue and has had a big thumbs up from the critics. So roll on the next instalment.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

A deliciously tangy tart with a creamy lemony filling with red and yellow cherry tomatoes, topped with the chopped pieces of goat’s cheese – perfect for lunch. brunch or dinner!

There is a feeling within this week that you have reached a turning point in your life and there is no going back. There could be an opportunity for some travel coming your way and this will give you a chance to spread your wings and broaden your knowledge. Emotionally this is an intense time and relationships need to be given the attention to bring things into balance.

Lemon and goat’s cheese flan

Use this time to relax and think things through as the things you pick up on now could save you some hassle in the future. There could be domestic changes afoot when the quantity of people visiting your home increases. Pay close attention to the details and refuse to sign agreements until you have all the facts in writing. This is when your observation powers do you credit.

Your words could well have more impact than you realize, coupled with your your social charm and skills; then romantically you have the ability to create long term partnerships. If home projects need to be tackled then make sure you attend to them quickly as your daily life is set to get very busy. Shortly you may have to be very adaptable and change direction at a moment’s notice.

Family will need you to be around now and your focus is likely to be on domestic and issues surrounding the home. Listen closely to your instincts they will serve you well this week. Even though you could be trying to keep a low profile, intrusions seem to interfere making this impossible, all you can do is priortise and deal with the essentials it seems.

There is a lot of support behind you and even if you are facing a few rough moments others are more than willing to be there for you. You could find yourself yearning for elements of the past when life was simpler. Perhaps there is some sadness for what has been lost. Keep light and lively and this will increase your desire for fun and romance.

All you have to do is subtly shift your thinking. Even if all does not seem perfect, the conditions are moving into place that will open up all kinds of new experiences. New insights and ideas are triggered by those you meet and even if within a relationship you do not seem to see eye to eye at the moment this will soon change when they realise how important your plans are.

Live in the moment Libra, focus on dealing with the now, doing what you can when you can and not focusing on what you can’t achieve and dwelling on that. Friends from abroad you haven’t seen or heard from in such a long time, may get in touch this week. The weekend is a good time for any financial activities whether it be buying or selling.

Love and romance is blooming and others may let you know just how they feel about you. Financial opportunities seem to appear out of nowhere and there could be changes to your workplace, perhaps there are new responsibilities heading your way. This is a good time to protect your assets and make sure you have security in place for the things that mean a lot to you.

There is mystery in the air and with your ruling planet in retrograde you will feel a deeper connection to the unseen now. Order and timing just seem to work for you this week, all the right people seem to turn up at the right time. Remain flexible to changing situations and even if you experience a few knocks by those a bit jealous of your success remain positive and optimistic.

Perhaps your intuition is telling you that not everyone is being upfront and honest with you and this will encourage you to dig a bit deeper to uncover the reality. There are significant rewards coming your way and there is an air of excitement that surrounds you. By the weekend expect lots of social invites and activities.

Energy levels are finally increasing and there is a feeling of enthusiasm growing inside of you again. The last few weeks have been a bit stressful but your renewed efforts to sort everything out have paid off. Keep your feet on the ground and you will continue to make steady progress. You may find that you are lifted into the public eye for some reason.

This week is all about remaining cool, calm and collected and allowing things to happen as naturally as possible. Home and family matters may be causing you a bit of concern but there will be a myriad of options to choose from to enable things to be sorted out. The direction that you wish your life to take may be narrowing down so that it is easier to focus on your goals and objectives.

Ingredients:

• 1 teaspoon salt • fresh ground black pepper • 225g finely grated parmesan cheese • 4 ounces goat’s cheese

packet of puff pastry 1 sheet, thawed according to packet directions yellow cherry tomatoes red cherry tomatoes 4 eggs 120ml milk 120ml cream zest of 1 lemon 2 teaspoons fresh finely chopped rosemary

• • • • • • •

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Roll puff pastry to an approximately 13-inch square. Transfer to 11-inch diameter tart pan with a removable bottom*. Trim edges and place in freezer for at least, 15 minutes. 2. In a medium bowl, combine eggs, milk and cream, lemon zest, 1 teaspoon chopped rosemary, salt and a generous grind or pinch of pepper. Whisk to combine. Add parmesan cheese and whisk again. 3. Remove flan shell from the freezer. Add both types of cherry tomatoes to tart shell. Pour egg mixture over tomatoes and dot evenly with goat’s cheese. 4. Place flan in preheated oven and bake until crust is golden brown and filling is set, about

25-30 minutes. Cool 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped rosemary and other herbs, if desired Notes: If your flan pan is smaller than 11 inches, roll puff pastry out accordingly. You may not need all of the filling, just fill to within a quarter inch of the top. Flan can also be made in a ceramic quiche pan or a glass pie dish. Roll out puff pastry to fit pan with slight overhang for trimming and fill to within a quarter inch of the top. The only secret to working with puff pastry is to keep it cold. Thaw it only until it's soft enough to roll. Returning it to the freezer after you've assembled your flan will also help it perform well.

Overheating HP Chromebook 11 laptops removed from shelfs

All HP Chromebook 11 laptops have been removed from sale following reports the devices' chargers had been overheating. The decision to halt sales came from HP and Google after owners complained about broken chargers. The two companies have also issued advice to existing owners telling them not to use the charger that came in the box with the computer. Instead, they said, owners should use third-party chargers to keep the gadget going. In the US, reports suggest the machines have been taken off shelves at retailer Best Buy and the gadget can no longer be found in the Google, HP and Amazon online stores. In a joint statement,

Google and HP said they had received a "small number" of reports from users saying their original charger had been damaged by overheating. The companies said they were now looking into the problem to see what was making the chargers overheat. They apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused by the faulty chargers and added that more information would follow shortly. The statement said that micro-USB chargers that work with other tablets and smartphones should be used instead of the bundled charger.

HP's Chromebook 11 was released in early October 2013 and cost about £230 in the UK. Overheating in laptops has caused problems for personal-computer makers in the past. In 2006, Dell Inc. and Apple Inc. (AAPL) recalled laptop batteries made by Sony Corp. because of overheating. The issue also affected computers made by Toshiba, International Business Machines Corp., Lenovo and Fujitsu Ltd.

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Calvin,

My hair is really thick and difficult to manage. Have you any ideas what style I can have? Lily, Mijas Dear Lily,

Most people dream of having thick hair as they think it will be less problematic, but as you know thick hair can be just as much a problem as fine hair. Layering thick hair is a good way of reducing weight but go carefully, as sometimes too short layers on thick hair can create a mushroom effect which is not flattering.

Sometimes it is better to leave the layers longer as

Lords

you will avoid the puffing out. If you do not want to lose the length or have layers the hair can be thinned out with thinning scissors or a razor, but I advise you only have this done with by an expert stylist. Also avoid using too many products on your hair, thick hair is heavy anyway and, although it is tempting, too many products on the hair will only make your hair heavier and your styling won't last. Dear Calvin,

I have my hair highlighted regularly but now it looks like I have a regrowth as if I had a full colour. How can I get rid of this? Sheila, Torremolinos

Dear Sheila,

This is a common problem when the hair has been highlighted continually over a number of years. In theory each time you have your highlights re-done it should only be the root area. Often this doesn't happen, and the colour is taken through each time, which causes a build up and block effect. The best way to remedy this is to have a darker colour woven through your hair to break up the block effect. Please understand this is not an instant fix and it will take some time to get that highlighted effect back. Patience is the key!

Dear Sue

Why does my boyfriend have red patches on his face after shaving? Ann, Mijas Dear Ann,

This sounds to me like a shaving rash. The most important tools for a smooth, close shave include a good razor with sharp blades, clean blades and lubrication to prevent dragging (which results in redness and irritation). A good remedy is a specialist men's cleansing foam which will not only neutralise the cal in our hard water but will also soften the skin and hair so the shave is closer. Avoid

after shave with alcohol in as this is very harsh on the skin and get him to use a toner for dry and irritated skin then a good moisturiser. Dear Sue,

What is the difference between hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic? Leigh, Mijas Costa Dear Leigh

If a product is labelled as hypoallergenic it's unlikely to trigger an allergic reaction. Such products are ideal for sensitive or difficult skins –but be aware that, over time, you can become 'allergic' even to hypoallergenic ingredients.

The term noncomedogenic is fraught with conflict in scientific circles, but it basically means the formula won't clog your pores or cause pimples.

Such products are perfect for acne-prone skin. Non comedogenic products are suitable for all skin types and will help keep your skin free of spots.

Cancer diversity has Antibiotics not for 'huge implications' running noses A single tumour can be made up of many separate cancers needing different treatments, researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research, London have said. They have developed a new technique for measuring the diversity within a cancer. A tumour starts as a single cell, which acquires mutations and eventually divides uncontrollably. But that is not the end of the process. Cancerous cells continue to mutate and become more aggressive, move round the body and resist drugs. This process is chaotic and results in a "diverse" tumour containing cancerous cells that have mutated in different ways. The researchers investigated cancer diversity in five children with leukaemia. They compared mutations in individual cancerous cells with a known database of mutations. Their

results showed patients had betweentwo and 10 genetically distinct leukaemias. They said this has "huge implications for medicine". Scientists compare cancer diversity to a tree. The initial mutations – the trunk – will be common to all cancer cells. But then the tumour branches out. It means a treatment that targets one "branch" or subclone of the cancer might slow the disease, but they will never stop it. The researchers said that one implication of their study is that therapies need to be developed which target the trunk of the tumour and that current targeted therapies being researched may not tackle advanced cancers. The researchers also emphasised the importance of catching cancers early before they have become too diverse to treat.

Running noses and green phlegm do not mean patients need antibiotics, doctors and public health experts have warned. They said it was a "prevailing myth" that the drugs were needed to treat such infections.

Public Health England and the Royal College of General Practitioners said the symptoms were often caused by viruses and the use of antibiotics was leading to resistance, they said. Public Health England said its own research showed that 40% of people thought antibiotics would help a cough if the phlegm was green, while very few thought it would make a difference to clear-coloured phlegm. The green colour in phlegm and snot is the result of a protein made by the immune system to fight infection. A spokesman said: "It's a prevailing myth that anyone with green phlegm or snot needs a course of antibiotics to get better." He said that most of the infections that generate

lots of phlegm and snot are viral illnesses and will get better on their own although patients can expect to feel pretty poorly for a few weeks. He added: "The problems of antibiotic resistance are growing. Everyone can help by not using antibiotics for the treatment of uncomplicated infections." Taking antibiotics affects the trillions of bacteria that naturally live in the human body and can lead to resistance. A spokesman for the Royal College of GPs, said overuse of antibiotics is a serious public health concern: "Infections adapt to antibiotics used to kill them and can ultimately make treatment ineffective so it's crucial that antibiotics are used appropriately."

Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip

Remember the Ministry of Silly Walks or the Dead Parrot sketch? Well they’re at it again.

The circus is set to start flying after 30 years … but, as yet, it’s not confirmed and we don’t know when it’ll be - announcement due tomorrow! Monty Python’s Flying Circus was like Marmite – you either loved it and found it hilarious or hated it and couldn’t see the point of it all. The BBC show ran from 1969 and 1974 but there were films including Life Of Brian (“He’s not the Messiah, he’s just a very naughty boy”, was one of the better remembered lines), Monty Python and The Holy Grail and their last film together Monty Python’s Meaning Of Life in 1983. Surviving members John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin are sure to miss Graham Chapman who died of cancer in 1989. Jones told the BBC:"I'm quite excited about it. I hope it makes us a lot of money. I hope to be able to pay off my mortgage!" and on Monday he tweeted: "Only three days to go till the Python press conference. Make sure Python fans are alerted to the big forthcoming news event." And on Tuesday he tweeted: “Python meeting this morning. Can't wait. Press Conference Thursday will apparently be live on Sky News. I'll get you the online URL." Most of the team have had hugely successful careers since Python. John Cleese recently went on what was called his Alimony Tour after being taken to court by his American ex-wife who was awarded £12 million. Cleese

has also appeared in both James Bond and Harry Potter films. Michael Palin has travelled all over the world making television travel films and has met with and eaten with an incredibly diverse section of people. Terry Jones has written books, presented programmes on medieval and ancient history for the TV and worked with numerous musicians. Terry Gilliam has been involved with various films including Time Bandits, Brazil and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen – all of which he directed. In the meantime Eric Idle has written books, West End musical songs, and is the master behind the music and lyrics for the musical Monty Python's Spamalot, based on the Holy Grail film. Film producer Mark Forstater won a court case against the Pythons earlier this year and said that he was, in fact, “the seventh Python” – a statement that the rest of the gang said was “laughable”. However, Forstater was laughing all the way to the bank with his award of £250,000 in extras for his part in Spamalot that grossed well over £100 million.

Strictly come Too fat to fly Paul O’Grady in hospital say BA thieving

While the Strictly Come Dancing performers were waiting in the wings or performing on Saturday night, the female dressing room used by the professionals and the contestants at the Tower Ballroom was broken into and items such as jewellery, an iPad and phone were stolen. It is not clear how the thieves got into the dressing room and police are asking for information from anyone who spotted someone in the area that they didn’t recognise as supposed to have been there. Lancashire Police would not say who owned the stolen items, but said the large room was being shared by dancers and

contestants. "We are investigating a theft that has occurred this evening at the Tower Ballroom at Blackpool," police said. "It was reported to us at around 9.45pm that some items had been taken from a dressing room within the building. Officers are investigating the theft and are making a number of enquiries to trace the person or people responsible." Last weekend saw Fiona Fullerton and her partner Anton Du Beck voted off after the dreaded dance-off with Mark Benton and his partner Iveta Lukosiute who got the judges’ votes to keep them in the competition.

Frenchman Kevin Chenais, 22, travelled to the United States to receive treatment in May 2012 for the hormone imbalance he suffers from but then found himself stranded as he was deemed too fat to fly by British Airways. He has to have round-the-clock care and frequently has to use oxygen to help him breathe.

The 500 pound young man arrived in the UK to be reunited with his parents after Virgin agreed to fly him back from New York on Tuesday. Cruise ship the Queen Mary also refused to accept him as a passenger when his parents tried to sail him home. Kevin's father Rene said his son had been left feeling "empty" when British Airways refused to let him on board. The same airline had flown him to the US in the first place, he pointed out. "We were all set to take

the boat, then they turned us back without even seeing me, without even trying," said Kevin. "So I'm really angry – doubly angry because British Airways refused to take me." But he praised Virgin for flying him out from New York's JFK airport and paying for the economy-class flight. "That was very kind of them," he said.

Also at the airport to meet him were French consular staff who are trying to get him back home to France on either Eurostar or Air France.

For The Love Of Dogs presenter Paul O’Grady, 58, otherwise known as Lily Savage, was taken to hospital after an angina attack. The comedian, presenter and dog lover has already suffered two heart attacks and was due to undergo surgery today. He wrote in a text message that he expected to “be out of action for quite a while”. His chat show on ITV was hosted by Michael Ball on Monday in his absence. Radio DJ Pete Price received the message amd told the Liverpool Echo that Paul had been overworking of late, saying of his friend: " I just love him to bits, and he has been overdoing it. He has just come back from Africa doing some work for a new TV show next year, and

then there are all his animals and all the other things he does. When I saw he wasn't on TV I texted to ask what had happened and he told me about it. He is a total workaholic, and I have told him he needs to take things easy." Phillip Schofield tweeted: "Sending lots of love to Paul O'Grady tonight. Get well soon mate x."

Culinary writer Nigel Slater and Countryfile presenter and farmer Adam Henson join forces to grow and cook Britain's favourite food from a working farm in the Cotswolds, taking their lead from the top 50 buys on UK shoppers' supermarket lists. The duo begin by looking at how the growth of convenience food has led to a decline in traditional cooking. Nigel makes lasagne, the UK's most popular ready meal, trying to match the price of the off-the-shelf version, while down on the farm, Adam challenges himself to grow durum wheat, which is used to make pasta.

Bournemouth Belle By email

On behalf of the residents of Bournemouth, may I say that it certainly is not a "sleepy little town" any more – it is a thriving cultural centre and has entertainment for all ages, not to mention a splendid beach. If your friend lives

on the outskirts and is not a fan of Bournemouth, tell her to try Poole!

Editor says: Not much in Poole apart from the pottery really, but I do like Bournemouth and the surrounding towns such as

Name Supplied After nearly twenty years of living on the Costa del Sol I have to say that this week has been the last straw. Bureaucracy has been going stark staring mad it seems ever since the recession hit and town halls, the Government and the courts are grabbing at money any way they can. It appears that it’s not enough that any Tom, Dick or Harry of any official nature can go into your personal bank accounts and take money out without even telling you, now I find that there has been a court case against me that was heard without my even being told when it was going to be. I had been told when I first picked up the papers that I would be informed when I should take in the rest of my evidence challenging the case – of which there was a lot – but nobody told me when the case was being heard, or

the fact that, what little evidence I had given in to the courts in the first place, by way of copies of emails, I was not allowed to submit as my own evidence and that it is the procedure here that you have to have a lawyer, to whom you have to give power of attourney, to represent you in even your slightest dealings with the court. The upshot of all this is that I had no idea I was not allowed to enter evidence myself (the evidence was duly stamped when I took it in as having been received by the court) and it was therefore totally ignored when the case was heard, thereby ending up with my evidence being, basically, put in the bin. I have been told that the case was heard, then subsequently ratified without me knowing a thing about it as I “had not answered the case”. My lawyer tells me that

people here in Spain have to go online and look themselves up on something called the Boletin del Estado to find out if anyone is suing you and when. I have not yet found one Spaniard who bothers to look themselves up on this, neither have I found one foreigner who knew anything about this. According to the law in Spain, I am now unable to appeal and I have to go to the people to whom I do not owe the money and bargain with them. I find this an absolutely disgraceful way of carrying on and am amazed how the poorer Spanish can possibly afford a lawyer to represent them in even the smallest of cases when they could perfectly well put their point of view across and get a fair hearing. Justice in Spain? Absolutely not!

Last Sunday I was fortunate enough to have a new “friend” for most of the day.

I had answered the article in a previous week’s copy of The News about the PAD Charity Dog Walk and, not having a dog myself, decided to “borrow” one of the shelter’s dogs for the day.

My dog was a rather handsome black fellow who had fairly long wirey hair and looked a little like a small Irish Wolf hound. He was polite, didn’t pull or bark at people or other animals, didn’t

even do a whoopsy even though I had taken bags along to clean up if necessary and was an allround great pal for the day. After our long walk, we went back with everyone else for a bacon sarnie and a cup of tea and, not only have I discovered a new doggie friend whom I may well pop along to take for a walk on occasions (I understand they are looking for willing dog walkers), I made lots of new people friends as well. This is a great and deserving charity that I shall be keeping in constant touch with now. By the way, I’m 77!

Comment By Ken Campbell

e Sky Tonight Throughout the year, as the Earth moves around the Sun we get to see a different view of the night sky as the Summer constellations make way for the Winter constellations.

T

o the casual observer, looking up into the night sky seems like just a random sprinkling of stars. But once you get to learn just a couple of constellations these can be used to help guide you on a Stella tour.

I

t never ceases to amaze me how the ancient Greeks, Romans and Babylonians managed to join up the stars in a dot-to-dot pattern to make the constellations and then weave myths and legends around them. Most of the constellations look nothing like what they are supposed to represent and it would take a great deal of imagination to recognise some of them.

I

f you go outside at around 11.00 tonight and look toward the east, you will see the Moon rising, we can start our tour here. Look just to the left of the Moon and there is a ‘star’ that is much brighter and basically looks out of place; this is the planet Jupiter, the largest planet in the Solar System. I’ll be writing more about Jupiter in a later article. The two bright stars close to Jupiter are called Castor and Pollux in Gemini the twins, the rest of Gemini stretches down to the Moon and is made up of fainter stars.

F

ollow a line along the horizon from Jupiter, through the Moon and on and you will come to the very distinct ‘Butterfly shape’ of Orion, probably the most conspicuous constellation in the sky. The three stars in a line form Orion’s belt across his middle. The bright red coloured star at Orion’s shoulder is Betelgeuse, a red giant star that is almost at the end of its life and is due to explode in a supernova any time now.

F

ollow the three stars in Orion’s belt upwards to another bright red star Aldebaran. Aldebaran marks the red eye of Taurus the Bull bearing down onto Orion and is another super massive star; it too is destined to follow Betelgeuse into Supernova in the not too distant future. Neither Betelgeuse nor Aldebaran will have any effect on Earth when they do explode as they are 650 and 68 light years away

C

respectively. The two horns of Taurus can be seen stretching away to the left pointing back toward Jupiter.

ontinue the line from Orion’s belt, through Aldebaran and on a little further and you will notice a faint fuzzy patch, these are the Pleiades or seven sisters. With the naked eye you should be able to make out at least seven stars grouped very tightly together but look at them through binoculars or a small telescope and you will see a myriad of stars sparkling like a jewellery box. Where Betelgeuse and Aldebaran are very old red giant stars, the Pleiades are blue/white infant stars newly created. With binoculars you may be able to see the gas cloud surrounding them that will eventually form planets.

P

isces, Aquarius and Capricorn are to the right of the Pleiades but to be honest they are such ambiguous sprawling constellations that they’re just too difficult to describe here so we’ll move on.

W

e are all waiting to see if Comet Ison ‘The Comet of the Century’ lives up to its name and glows ‘as bright as the Moon’ over the next few weeks. At the moment it is speeding toward the Sun at a quarter of a million miles an hour. On 28th November it will pass to within one million miles of the Sun and then be flung back out into space passing very close to Earth. If predictions are correct and it doesn’t get torn apart by the Sun then it should be a spectacular sight over Christmas. Watch this space!

Vettel the Lone Star in Texas With Sebastian Vettel on course to making a small piece of F1 history, it was remarkable just how unremarkable the United States Grand Prix was for the four-time world champion. He nailed the start, breezed the restart, after Sutil had a meeting with a trackside wall forcing a safety car deployment, and promptly disappeared into the dusty horizons of the Lone Star state never to be troubled again, seemingly in a world and certainly in a class of his own.

So another record for Sebastian Vettel, eight now in a row in one season – beating his idol Michael Schumacher’s tally of seven.

While Vettel got his familiar perfect getaway into the first corner, Mark Webber had his usual tardy start. Wheelspin ensured that he quickly lost position to Romain Grosjean despite the Lotus being forced to go around the outside of turn 1 and through cement dust that had been put down after a support race incident had leaked oil onto the track. Webber's day went from bad to worse when Lewis Hamilton also cruised by him in the exit of the same corner, indicating that the pre-race concerns about the Mercedes' brakes had been laid to rest.

Romain Grosjean produced another superbly controlled drive to take second place. “That was a really tough race,” he admitted afterwards, “I had to have probably one of my best ever drives to keep Mark behind and it's a great feeling to have tamed at least one of the Bulls in Texas, as they clearly had the fastest package today.” Grosjean's 18-point haul from Austin means that he is the second highest points scorer since the F1 circus left Europe and started its end of season 'flyaways' at the Singapore Grand Prix. Only world champion Sebastian Vettel, who remains unbeaten since the end of July, has added more points to his tally in the same period. "The whole team – here and back at Enstone – are doing an amazing job," Grosjean commented, “Every day, I see them

In the constructor standings, things really are too close to call in the battle over second, third and fourth places. With a maximum of 43 points available to a team that brings home its cars in a 12 sweep of the Brazilian Grand Prix, there's no way to be certain who will be runners-up to Red Bull. Mercedes stand second with 348 points, with Ferrari in third place on 333 point and Lotus still in touch on 315 points.

Who are you calling a cowboy? Grosjean and Vettel share a joke

working hard together to keep us at the front and, when you look at the gap to the next nearest challenger, it's clear that we're the second best team after Red Bull right now.”

Team boss Eric Boullier had similar praise for his new team leader. “It's been another positive weekend for the team, and we scored more points than our championship rivals through a perfect drive

from Romain,” he said, “The only way we could fight the Red Bulls was if Romain made a great start and that's exactly what he delivered. It really was his best grand prix ever and another excellent performance to add to his recent run of great form.”

As we head to the final race of the 2013 season in Brazil, Fernando Alonso successfully secured the runners-up position in the drivers championship after finishing in fifth place.

Lewis Hamilton, however, will still have to put in a strong performance in Sao Paulo if he wants to keep hold of third place, as Mark Webber is just six points behind him. Webber gained half that amount on Hamilton at the weekend alone after finishing one place ahead of Hamilton at the Circuit of the Americas.

Renault backs electric Formula E motor racing series Renault is backing a new series of electric car races in city centres around the world that will aim to boost the market for battery-powered vehicles and advance the technology behind them. Formula E plans to stage its first race in Beijing next September and has signed up commercial partners including Renault and tyre manufacturer Michelin. The race series has the blessing of motor sport's FIA governing body, The first Formula E cars that racers will drive will look similar to those used in Formula One – hardly surprising given that F1 teams McLaren and Williams will supply the electronics and batteries respectively. Renault, which provides engines for F1 teams, including the current champions Red Bull, will oversee the integration of the various systems, while Michelin supplies the tyres.

Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag said the excitement of cars racing at speeds of 220km/h (135mph) through the heart of cities including London, Miami and Los Angeles should help electric vehicles to shrug off an image problem and fine-tune their technologies.

"Electric cars are still perceived as slow, even as ugly or not cool, something that people don't want to buy for their day-to-day lives," said Agag, who is investing $100 million in the series with fellow Spaniard Enrique Banuelos. "We want Formula E to be the place where all those technologies are tested, where all those advances happen," Agag told a presentation in London.

Legend Sachin Tendulkar's final farewell India legend Sachin Tendulkar said it was "hard to believe a wonderful journey" had ended as he bowed out of international cricket in Mumbai. In his 200th Test match, the 40-year-old batting icon's final action came 24 years and one day after his Test debut. He bowled two overs but did not bat again as West Indies capitulated for 187 to lose by an innings and 126 runs. India players formed a guard of honour for Tendulkar, who was presented with a host of awards in a lavish ceremony. Revered throughout his distinguished career, a clearly emotional Tendulkar told a packed Wankhede Stadium: "My life between

22 yards for (more than) 22 years. It's hard to believe that wonderful journey is coming to end. "It's getting a little difficult to talk but I'll manage. The most important person in my life, and I've missed him a lot since he passed away in 1999, is my father. Without his guidance I don't think I'd be standing in front of you." Tendulkar, who was dismissed for 74 in what proved to be his final Test innings on Friday, addressed his devoted fans in a 20 minute on-field speech.

India's cricket star Sachin Tendulkar has been awarded the country's highest civilian honour, the

Highest Award

Bharat Ratna. The award was announced hours after Tendulkar retired from international cricket following India's victory over the West Indies in a Test in Mumbai. Tendulkar is the first sportsman to win the award and – at 40 – the youngest. Previous recipients include India's first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela and Rajiv and Indira Gandhi. The award is made on a recommendation by the prime minister to the president.

Wayne’s Poker Tips There is an expression in poker “Do not tap the tank it scares the fish!”. This means if you have a bad player at the table who takes down a few pots with lucky cards don't give him a hard time by ridiculing his play – 70% of the time we will take money off him and we do not want him to improve his play or leave the table. The term Fish is used to describe an inexperienced or poor player also known as a the Sucker. There are top class players who have fishy nicknames, David Ulliott AKA The Devil Fish is the best known one, but they are first class players and the fish term is used because they play any two cards with very good effect against weaker opponents. There is also a TAG Fish (Tight Aggressive Fish) which experienced players love as they only play ABC text book poker and because of this it is not hard to work

out when they have a strong hand. How do we play a fish? Well that depends on what type of fish they are – TAG, Calling Station or weak.

TAG Fish: He is playing text book poker so we need to take note of his hand selection and calling range. We know that this type of player will only raise with a hand and is unlikely to limp unless he has value to call. I like to call this type of player with a wide hand selection, small pairs, small connectors and suited connectors. If you call this player and the flop misses over cards I will always bet into them, if first to act, and would think about a 3 bet if I suspect a continuation bet from them. On the other hand if they fight back or show aggressive play think about slowing down or folding. A Calling Fish: (Calling

Station) will like to see most flops with any old rags, they always defend their blind, call raise and 3 bets. This type of player again will only raise with premium hands and opt to see a cheap flop with a wide range. Again, do not be afraid to call raises from this type of player but give them credit for a strong hand. Do not try and bluff this player – they will call you down – but if the flop misses over cards and you have a pair value bet chances are you will get paid off. When playing premium hands against this player bet each street for value, he will call and 70% of the time you will take money off him. Remember even a poor player can hit a big hand with rags so do not tilt if you lose the pot, over the long haul you will profit against this player.

Weak fish: This is a timid player most likely a very inexperienced one playing with a small bank roll and another name for them is Scared Money. They like to play cheap flops and can be shoved off pots by shear aggressive betting. Again with this player you know if they have a monster hand as it is the only time they show aggression. The only way to play this weak player is by bulling them but do always remember the Fish is an inexperienced player and will marry an over pair whether the board is flushy or straight. As the saying goes “You cannot bluff a fool!” If you have any poker questions or would like to add to this column email wayne@bolsa-fiesta.com

Ashes down under starts today

Umpires in the Ashes series between England and Australia will use a real-time Snickometer and HotSpot to help detect contact between bat and ball. The technology aids will form part of the decision review system (DRS) after the host broadcaster and company that makes the equipment reached agreement. HotSpot's thermal imaging caused controversy during the summer Ashes when it failed to detect faint edges. But it is hoped that the two devices together can help eradicate errors.

SPORTING

Stenson plays a blinder Henrik Stenson became the first man to win the Race to Dubai and FedEx Cup in the same year as he took the World Tour Championship by six shots in Dubai. The 37-year-old Swede had six birdies and finished with an eagle for an imperious bogey-free 64 and a 25-under-par total, a new tournament record.

Ian Poulter was second after a strong 67, with last week’s winner Frenchman Victor Dubuisson two further back. US Open champion Justin Rose, who would have taken the overall title by winning this week, finished 10 shots adrift. Stenson's seventh European Tour title was his first of 2013 and caps a remarkable burst of form for a player who had

slipped to 230th in the world rankings less than two years ago. In September, he was the first European to capture the $10m FedEx Cup prize after winning two of the four play-off tournaments.

The final day conditions were a complete contrast from the previous three days, unbroken warm sunshine giving way to overcast skies and a stiff breeze on the Greg Normandesigned Earth Course at Juremiah Golf Estates. Defending champion Rory McIlroy remains without a title in 2013 but continued his encouraging return to form after recovering from bogeys at

the first two holes with seven birdies in a 67 for a final total of 15 under, a score matched by two other former world number ones, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood.

"There's been a lot of progression a lot of positive signs. I've learned a lot of things this year. For the most part I'm just really happy my game is back to where I want it to be," said McIlroy. McIlroy's fellow Northern Ireland player Graeme McDowell who, like Rose, could have taken the Race to Dubai by winning the title, had an eagle and a double bogey in a 71 and was in a share for 17th at nine under.

Beckham and James in talks over Miami MLS Basketball superstar LeBron James says he is in talks with David Beckham about investing in the former England captain's planned Miami MLS franchise. LeBron James was fourth in the Forbes list of highest-paid athletes for 2013, earning an estimated £37m. Beckham was eighth, bringing in £29m

James, 28, won back-toback NBA titles with Miami Heat and believes a football team would be popular in the city.

“David has become a good friend of mine. There's interest on both sides" he

told South Florida SunSentinel. The chance to become a team owner at a discounted price was part of Beckham's contract at LA Galaxy. The 38-year-old took up the option after ending his playing career at French side Paris StGermain last season.

James already has a minority stake in Premier League Liverpool as part of a partnership with the club's owners Fenway Sports Group. "I think this is a great town for soccer," James said of Beckham's preferred base for his team.
