Australia fire fighters join up fires Fire fighters in Australia have deliberately joined up two large fires near the Blue Mountains in an effort to control bushfires across New South Wales. NSW Rural Fire Services Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said that the fires at State Mine and Mount Victoria had "been deliberately and tactically joined" to try and prevent them from merging with a third fire at Springwood. He said extensive backburning operations were being deployed in anticipation of worsening conditions on Wednesday. On Tuesday morning more than 60 blazes were

still alight, with 13 uncontained. The region experienced light rain on Tuesday, but fire fighters said it was not enough to quench the fires. NSW declared a state of emergency on Sunday, after being caught in some of the region's worst fires in years. The emergency fire at State Mine has been downgraded to "watch and act" after some light rain at the fire zone. However,

Mr Fitzsimmons added that "there's still a way to go" and that fire fighters would be braced for higher temperatures and stronger winds expected on Wednesday, which would be "about as bad as it gets".

A "fairly active storm cell" was heading towards the back end of the Blue Mountains, which could bring on stronger winds and "erratic weather behaviour", he added.

Well, as I said last week, I had to go and give a talk at the PAD Ladies Lunch last Friday and I hadn’t got a clue what to say. I find that if I plan what to say, I end up referring to notes that will a) probably not make one iota of sense to me when I’m standing up in front of up to 100 women and b) will make the talk sound a bit stilted as I look at them. So, yep, I winged it! Apparently it all went down OK as I got quite a few comments after the lunch (all of which, thank God, were favourable) and from some Ladies I met again at the PAD autumn fair on Sunday. Both events raised much needed cash for the charity so that they can keep going for a while longer but, like all charities thay are still in dire need of help. I shall be doing another talk at a Ladies Lunch at the Alhaurin Golf Hotel on Thursday November 7th at 1.30pm. There will be a three-course meal and a free drink after the dinner. Tickets are €12 from Jo on 696 430 160. Our puppy, Jackson, now has a bucket on his head as,

despite being warned several times, he failed to stop chasing the cats and one of them got fed up with having to run like a lunatic around the garden to get away from him. He was not biting them but putting his mouth around them and holding them down. However, he still hasn’t learnt his lesson and, when he occasionally catches up with them, he now sits on them instead. I wonder if I will be able to put a bucket on his bum when one of them whacks him with claws out there?! One thing that was good was that he had his first “proper” outing on Sunday to the PAD fair and did quite well.

"While we've lost more than 200 properties and another 100 or so damaged, many thousands have been saved by the efforts of our volunteer and other fire fighters who've done a tremendous job for almost a week." Mr O'Farrell added that more than 1,500 fire fighters were tackling the blazes on Tuesday.

Most of the fire fighters are volunteers – many look exhausted, and some have even lost their homes. Many families have their bags packed and are watching anxiously in case they're forced to flee. All schools in the Blue Mountains will be closed on Wednesday. One man has died – possibly of a heart attack – while trying to protect his home. Hundreds of people have been left homeless by the bushfires and disaster welfare centres have been set up where families can start the planning needed to rebuild their lives.

On Monday, an 11-yearold boy in the Port Stephens area was charged with deliberately lighting two fires on October 13th. Another boy, 15, has also been arrested over the fires, local media said, citing police sources.

Strasbourg condemns Spain over ETA case

The European Court of Human Rights has condemned Spain over its continued detention of a convicted militant, and demanded her release. Basque ETA terrorist Ines del Rio is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence for her role in bomb attacks in the 1980s. Del Rio was arrested in Zaragoza driving a car packed with explosives intended for an ETA attack on the Costa del Sol.

She was sentenced to more than 3,000 years in jail in 1987, most of which was for her role in a car bomb attack on a Guardia Civil police patrol in Madrid in 1986 which left 14 dead and 40 injured. She was also found guilty of attacks that claimed another 10 victims. Under the legal guidelines in place at the time of her conviction, Del Rio's prison term was reduced to

the maximum possible sentence – 30 years.

Del Rio was due for early release in 2008 due to good behaviour, but Spain changed the rules on remission in 2006, and Del Rio's release was postponed until 2017.

In rejecting an appeal by the Spanish government, the European Court of Human Rights has upheld its 2012 ruling against Spain which opposed a legal practice known as the "Parot doctrine" – that allowed prison terms to be extended for people convicted of terrorist offences. The Court ruled that

the prolonged detention of Ines Del Rio was a violation of two articles (5 and 7) of the European Convention on Human Rights, which cover the right to no punishment without law, and the right to liberty and security. In its judgment, the court said "it was incumbent on the Spanish authorities to ensure that she Ines Del Rio was released at the earliest possible date".

It also ordered the Spanish government to pay €30,000 in

Strasbourg condemns Spain over ETA case Although the Strasbourg court's ruling only applied to Ms Del Rio (page 3), the Spanish government had said that dozens of other convicted ETA members could be eligible for release if it was upheld.

Groups which represent the victims of terrorist attacks have called on Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy not to comply with the ruling. Voices Against Terrorism said in a statement: "Compliance will betray victims of terrorism and all Spaniards."

At a Monday afternoon news conference together with Interior Minister Jorge Fernández-Díaz, Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón said he regretted the ECHR’s ruling. “We have used all the resources available in order for the doctrine to remain in place,” he said. “Someone who kills 20 people cannot have the same legal sentence as someone who committed only one murder.” Gallardón insisted that the application of the ECHR’s decision was up to the Spanish courts, specifically the High Court in the case of terrorists and the provincial courts in the case of common criminals. “The ruling affects only one person, Inés del Río. The decision regarding the application of the ECHR’s ruling is up to the Spanish courts. It’s not a government

decision; it’s a legal one.” He added that it was up to the Attorney General’s Office to study each case individually to determine whether the ECHR’s ruling should apply to other cases. FernándezDíaz said: “It will be the courts that determine how the sentence is applied.” He added: “We have worked to defend a doctrine that is fair to the victims and extraordinarily useful in the fight against terrorism and the most abject of crimes.” Gallardón said the compensation the ECHR ordered the government to pay to Del Río would be covered by the compensation that the ETA terrorist should have paid to the victims of her crimes. Del Río declared herself insolvent.

Ángeles Pedraza, the chairwoman of the AVT association of terrorism victims, said: “If the

government complies with the ruling there will be protests.” Meanwhile, on Monday the political parties forming the Basque nationalist abertzale left called the European Court of Human Rights' decision to revoke the so-called "Parot doctrine" as "the beginning of the end of the penitentiary policy of exception". In a statement read out in the centre of Bilbao, the abertzale described the court's decision as "very good news, because on a human level it should bring freedom to dozens of people who have spent up to 30 years of their lives behind bars". The gathering attracted around 500 people. The meeting was held just moments after the ECHR's ruling on the case of Inés del Río was announced.

'Retirement age should be raised to 70' The chairman of the Institute for Economic Studies (IEE), José Luis Feito, suggested on Monday that the official retirement age should be raised even further.

He said the state pension system reform introduced in 2011 – by which the pensionable age will gradually be increased to 67 years from 65 to ensure the sustainability of the system – should be

extended to raise the official retirement age to 70 years. He also argued that in order to have the right to a full pension, workers should pay a minimum of 40 years of Social Security contributions, and 20 years for half of the maximum. “The reform of the pension system will have to be intensified because pensions that are

increasing at a rate of 5 per cent when the economy is growing 2 per cent in nominal terms could make the system collapse,” Feito said when presenting the IEE's report on the 2014 state budget that the draft budget lacked ambition and is entirely reliant on increased revenues to achieve next year’s deficit target.

Ex-bank boss defends bonuses After appearing in a Barcelona court on Monday as an official suspect in a case of criminal mismanagement, the former chairman of Caixa Catalunya, Narcís Serra, defended the bonuses, pay hikes, pension rights and severance packages the board of directors of the nationalised savings bank granted themselves when it was floundering because of its over-exposure to the ailing real estate sector.

Serra, a former cabinet minister in the Socialist government of ex-Prime Minister Felipe González, described the payments made to himself, the former general manager of the now-nationalized lender, Adolf Todó, and 52 other board members, as “legal” and “fair”. Serra – who has also served as the mayor of Barcelona – and Todó were heckled by

more than 100 people, who lost large amounts as a result of preferred shares sold to them by the savings bank, outside the door of the court where the hearing was held. Some of them managed to get access to the landing in the court building from which two firecrackers were thrown. “Hands up, this is a stick-up!” they shouted.

State attorney Fernando Maldonado claimed the retributions and emoluments received by the bank’s top management were “disproportionate and divorced from the real situation” of the lender in the course of a “serious economic crisis”. At a Caixa Catalunya board meeting in January 2010, the bonuses of Todó and his number two, Jaume Masana, were raised by 50 per cent, while their basic

salaries were increased by the same amount in another meeting held in October the same year. The prosecutor alleged that the actions of the 54 board members “contributed to the serious financial crisis” of the savings bank. He also said the pension rights and severance packages awarded to Todó and Masana were out of proportion. Todó earned €4 million and had acquired economic rights worth 8.2 million more.

The officials were dismissed when the state’s Orderly Bank Restructuring Fund (FROB) took control of the savings bank and injected over €12 billion of taxpayers' money into its commercial banking arm, Catalunya Banc. The bank is in the process of laying off 2,100 of its 7,200-strong workforce.

Trafficked woman granted asylum The Interior Ministry has granted asylum to a Nigerian woman and her three-year-old daughter – the first case of its kind where this has been given to a non-political refugee.

The woman had fallen into the hands of a humantrafficking ring after a two-year journey across Africa and the Strait. She had been repeatedly raped, forced to prostitute herself and obliged to have two abortions, which were carried out in unhygienic conditions. Rosa Flores of the Cruz Roja, which has been handling the case, said: “When she arrived in Spain, just a few hours after being brought to a centre, the traffickers found her and demanded she pay them €20,000. She was told that if she didn’t, she would be taken away and forced into prostitution to cover the debt.” She decided to confront the traffickers, refused to pay the money and sought asylum because “they knew exactly where she was at all times," Flores said. "Many

of the women who arrived with her have disappeared because of the huge pressure they are put under.”

The police estimate that in Spain there are more than 12,000 victims of trafficking rings, which generate around €5 million per day for the mafias that control them. Flores calls the Nigerian woman’s story a cause for hope. “It has not been easy but it is great news because it is the first

time our government has granted this protection,” she said. “It is relevant for other victims, who may be able to seek this protection in the future, and it will help many more people to go to the police.”

The Spanish Network against Human Trafficking has called on the government to do more to meet its obligations and to introduce new legislation to combat the trade in people.

Ban on MPs’ private income proposed The Socialist Party is currently working on a proposal legally to prevent national and regional representatives from earning an extra salary on the side in the private sector. Although the law currently prohibits members of parliament from doing any other work, many get permission to do academic work, deliver lectures, work as advisors or in

legal firms. In 2008 only 45 out of the 350 MPs (13 per cent) did not have any other activity outside their parliamentary work, according to data compiled by the El Pais newspaper. The proposal will be discussed and put forward for approval at the Socialist Party's Political Conference to be held on November 8th, 9th and 10th.

Spain’s banks better off than many in EU

Not being head of state, Crown Prince Felipe could not stand in for his father at last week's IberoAmerican Summit in Panama, but he was able to represent King Juan Carlos at the ninth annual Ibero-American businessmen’s conference, which is held in conjunction with the regional leaders’ summit. At last year’s summit in Cádiz, the Spanish and Portuguese economies were very much on the radar with Latin American and Caribbean leaders concerned that the countries’ financial problems would ripple across the Atlantic. However this year Prince Felipe was able to assure a group of South American investors on Thursday that Spain would see some growth by the end of the year. He said there were many positive signs that the Spanish economy was improving: “Even though

there are difficulties, the prospects are positive. By the end of the year we will return to the path of growth and this trend will be consolidated in 2014.” He went on: “While there is still high unemployment, Spain has once again become competitive, production has noticeably increased, and our financial sector is much more solvent and efficient.” Giving examples of how Spain has “regained investors’ confidence,” the prince pointed to the foreign money that is being pumped into the automobile industry and the stabilising of the country’s risk premium rate. “There is still a lot of work to be done, but the Spanish economy has found the right road,” he said.

Prince Felipe arrived in Panama City on Wednesday night

accompanied by Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy landed a short time afterwards. But it wasn’t just the prince who had praise for Spain’s comeback economy. Panama President Ricardo Martinelli – himself a supermarket magnate – said “severity and sacrifices are now bearing fruit.” Meanwhile

in

New

York, Santander CEO Emilio Botín also praised the Spanish economy at a ceremony to mark the rebranding of his US affiliate Sovereign Bank to Santander. “In Spain, there is money coming in from all directions and everything: for the stock exchange, for public debt, for direct investments. There has been a drastic change in how Spain is seen abroad. There is so much confidence in Spain you can’t even imagine."

Gates invests in Spain

The Spanish construction company FCC has a new shareholder – Microsoft founder and multimillionaire Bill Gates who has just bought €113.5 millionsworth of shares – six per cent of the FCC's capital – through several of his companies, making him the second biggest shareholder in the group, after the company's first

vice-president, Esther Koplowitz. The company's shares shot up in value on the Madrid stock exchange when the news was released on Monday. According to Bloomberg, Gates is once again the richest man in the world, having knocked Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim from the top spot.

in an interview with El Pais newspaper, the president of the Eurogroup of EU finance ministers, Jeroen dijsselbloem, said that “Spanish banks are better off than those of many other European countries”. dijsselbloem went on: "i am very optimistic about Spain. The industrial and economic foundations are there, and the reforms are working. The improvements are there, even if the changes are still not noticeable in the real economy. Unemployment is going down, the recession is ending, exports are growing. i insist i am optimistic about Spain." However, he rejected the idea of a radical change in European economic policy if austerity fails to produce the desired results. "We already introduced flexibility in the deficit targets. a good many countries, among them Spain, are benefiting from it."

French President N Hollande berates US FRancE

President Francois Hollande expressed "deep disapproval" on Monday over claims the US National Security Agency secretly tapped phone calls in France.

In a phone conversation with US President Barack Obama, he said this was "unacceptable between friends and allies", demanding an explanation. The NSA has recently spied on 70.3 million phone calls in France, according to allegations in France's Le Monde newspaper, based on leaks from US exintelligence analyst Edward Snowden. Le Monde said the NSA

intercepts were apparently triggered by certain key words. The agency also apparently captured millions of text messages. The paper did not say if the operation was still in progress. Observers have said the outrage is largely for public consumption, because the French government has been accused of running its own snooping operation similar

Venezuela shoots down two 'hostiles'

The Venezuelan authorities announced on Monday that two light aircraft were shot down after entering the country's airspace over the weekend. These were the first midair attacks by fighter jets since a bill authorising such action against illegal planes was approved earlier this month. The aircraft were allegedly smuggling drugs from Central America and refused to follow the military pilots' orders. Another 11 unauthorised planes have been disabled on the ground this year. Venezuelan security forces

say more than 35 tonnes of drugs have been found this year. The two incidents suggest the Venezuelan government is stepping up its efforts to prevent drugtrafficking flights over its airspace, especially since President Nicolas Maduro issued a public warning to drug smugglers earlier this month. Under the late President Hugo Chavez, the US Drug Enforcement Administration was expelled from the country provoking criticism from Washington that the Venezuelan authorities weren't doing enough to tackle drug cartels operating in the country.

to that of the US, according to a Le Monde report in July that the French government was storing vast amounts of personal data of its citizens on a supercomputer. The latest revelations follow claims in the German media that US agents hacked into the email account of former Mexican President Felipe Calderon. Mr Snowden, a former NSA worker, went public with revelations

about US spying operations in June. The information he leaked led to claims of systematic spying by the NSA and CIA on a global scale.

Targets included rivals like China and Russia, as well as allies like the EU and Brazil. Mr Snowden is currently in Russia, where he was granted a yearlong visa. The US wants him extradited to face trial on criminal charges.

Saudis 'not improving human rights'

Saudi Arabia has failed to act on recommendations by a UN body to improve human rights and instead "ratcheted up" repression, according to an Amnesty International reports, which said that promises the Gulf Kingdom made to the UN Human Rights Council in 2009 were "nothing but hot air".

Amnesty's report documents what it describes as a "new wave of repression against civil society" that has taken place since 2011. Human rights activists and supporters of political reform in the country face repressive

measures that included arbitrary arrest, detention without charge or trial, unfair trials and travel bans, the report said.

Torture and other illtreatment during detention is rife and carried out with impunity, the report said. The heavy reliance by the courts on "confessions" often extracted under torture, duress or deception has entrenched such abuses, it claimed. It documents other alleged violations, including "systemic discrimination of women in both law and practice" and "abuse of migrant workers".

Smog closes schools and airport

Smog has choked the northern city of harbin, heilongjiang province, forcing schools and highways to shut and disrupting flights on Monday. The density of airborne particles was several times above World health Organisation recommended limits. Visibility was reduced to below 50m (160ft) in parts of the city, reports said. PM2.5 levels, used to measure the amount of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometres in the air, were above 500 micrograms per cubic metre on Monday morning, state-run news agency Xinhua reported. The WhO guidelines say average daily concentrations of PM2.5 should be no more than 25 microgrammes per cubic metre. Earlier this year, air pollution in china's capital, Beijing, also soared past hazardous levels. PaRaguay

Roma couple charged with abduction A Roma couple were formally charged in Greece on Monday with abducting a young blonde girl and holding false papers. They are being detained pending a trial.

The 39-year-old man and 40-year-old woman were identified by Greek police as Christos Salis and Eleftheria Dimopoulou. The girl, named Maria, was discovered during a raid on a Roma camp in central Greece last week. DNA tests showed that she was not related to the couple, who insist they were given her legitimately.

Police initially raided the Roma camp to search for drugs and weapons. They noticed the lack of resemblance between the blonde-haired, blue-eyed, pale-skinned little girl and her parents, and found further discrepancies when they investigated the family's documents. The Smile of the Child charity said medical examinations

show Maria is in fact either five or six years old and not four as was previously reported, after a birth certificate was found to be a forgery. The couple had registered different numbers of children with different regional family registries. The Greek authorities say the couple were in possession of false papers which suggested the woman had given birth to six children within a 10month period. When questioned about how they came to have Maria, the couple made constantly changing claims.

A lawyer representing

the Roma couple said that they were carrying out a search for the girl's mother. He said the couple claim the woman had given Maria to them because she could not look after her daughter. But social workers suspect the couple kidnapped the girl and intended sending her out to beg, or involving her in a sex ring. Maria is being cared for by a charity in Athens. Greece has requested assistance from other European countries through Interpol after police decided to make an international appeal as the girl looked as if she might be from northern or eastern Europe.

Survivors excluded from Italy memorial

Survivors of a shipwreck in which more than 360 African migrants died protested on the island of Lampedusa on Monday after being excluded from a ceremony to honour the victims. A big screen had been erected at a holding centre on Lampedusa so that the detainees could follow proceedings, but they emerged en masse and staged a sit-in, blocking a road. People on the island felt the ceremony should have been held there, because it is closer to the scene of the tragedies. The island, which lies 290km off the coast of Africa, is a key destination for migrant vessels bound for Europe. The ceremony, held in the Sicilian port of Agrigento, fell short of the full state funeral that the Italian government had originally promised. The service was led by religious leaders – Catholic, Coptic and Islamic – and broadcast live to the nation. Among those gathered at the dockside venue were three

Archbishop attacks ‘immoral’ Only in energy companies in Britain Britain! The Church increasingly plays a part in politics in Britain and tends to jump to the defence of the underdog, most recently attacking the big six energy companies and suggesting their price increases in the run up to winter are immoral. In an interview with the Mail on Sunday newspaper the Archbishop

of Canterbury, the most Reverend Justin Welby, suggested the firms should be conscious of their social obligations rather than just maximising profit. His comments came after British Gas followed in the footsteps of another energy provider by announcing a 9.2 per cent increase in prices. His

He said people had to buy gas and electricity and the energy companies had a ‘huge responsibility to serve society’. He said fuel poverty in Britain was a severe issue because real incomes are

It has been suggested that one in five marriages in Britain are faked to get around immigration laws – that amounts to around 15,000 ceremonies a year. The Home Office received many warnings about bogus marriages, but many remained undetected and so Registrars were powerless to prevent the shams, according to an article in

the Daily Mail newspaper.

Laws to deal with fake marriages have been watered down by a series of human rights judgements, but Government Ministers have now announced new measures in an effort to clamp down on the abuse and it will be possible to delay marriages while investigations take place.

Red Cross ask for food

The British Red Cross will be helping hard-up British families for the first time in 70 years this winter by organising food for the needy. The organisation is to ask shoppers to donate food at supermarkets. It will then be distributed to those most in need by the charity FareShare. Almost half a million people received food from food banks last year in Britain.

While it is still relatively early in the soccer season many supporters of Arsenal believe that Arsene Wenger has put together the best side the club has had since the glory days of the ‘invincibles’. Certainly Jack Wilshere’s goal in the 4-1 win over Norwich was absolutely outstanding with deft flicks and an understanding between the players suggesting this team has something special that if retained and nurtured will perhaps give Arsenal that slight edge in the fight for the league championship. While there is strength in depth, Arsenal need to avoid too many injuries, but as things stand everything looks rosy at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal are the team of the moment and they are two point ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool in the league table.

Beheading videos Hall stripped of OBE allowed back onto and Travis in Court Facebook Following a temporary ban in May this year, social networking site Facebook has decided they will allow videos showing people being decapitated saying that people have the right to see what is going on in the world and then condemn the content if they so wish.

The ban came about after complaints about the beheading of a woman by a Mexican drug cartel that was shown on the site. Users who complained about the initial beheading video were sent a response saying the film did not breach company policy.

However, Facebook say that they will monitor the videos to make sure that they don’t “glorify violence” and said that they would not show them if violence was encouraged or celebrated and a member of

Facebook’s own safety advisory board, Stephen Balkam has urged them to rethink their decision adding that they should take note of how they adopt their own rules in regard to nudity, sex and violence.

Dr John Baptista, associate professor of information systems at Warwick Business School, added: "Sadly, I think Facebook is late in responding to feedback and it is very disappointing to see them not being proactive in addressing a serious issue such as this. I hope they do take the feedback seriously and respond positively." Sean Gallagher, of freedom of information pressure group Index on Censorship, said: "The decision to show beheadings is part of a much wider debate on whether companies like

Facebook should moderate the content they host. With over a billion users worldwide, Facebook's decisions about what can and can't be shown have a huge impact on global freedom of expression. Films about beheadings may be deeply upsetting and offensive but they do expose the reality of violent acts that are taking place in the world today. When trying to draw a line about what should or shouldn't be allowed, it's important to look at context, not just content."

Prime Minister David Cameron condemned the decision saying that Facebook should explain its decision to allow such things to be shown, without warnings to worried parents who are afraid of what their children could see.

Stuart Hall, the 83-year-old disgraced broadcaster who was convicted of sex offences against children aged from nine to 17 years old between 1967 and 1985 is to be stripped of the OBE he was awarded in 2012 for services to broadcasting and charities according to reports from Sky News. The news of the decision – reached by an independent forfeiture committee – will then be recorded in the London Gazette.

The former It’s A Knockout presenter was sentenced to 15 months after admitting 14 charges which he had previously vehemently denied and, last month detectives said they wanted to interview Mr Hall over dozens of further rape allegations that have been made, saying that a woman has told them that Hall raped her regularly over several years when she was a young teenager. Waste

Food giant Tesco are launching a campaign to try and help families in the UK cut their average food wastage of £700 a year. It was estimated that 68% of bagged salad is thrown out, 40% of apples, 20% of bananas and grapes and half of all bakery goods going in the bin untouched. The research came to the conclusion that Tesco was responsible for around 28,500 tons of food waste and an estimated 15 million tons of wastage overall every year in the UK. Tesco say they will be curbing some of their multi-buy offers and developing mix-and-match promotional smaller bags to help curb the problem. So instead of having to buy three big bags of apples to get your “bargain”, you should be able to buy, for example, one bag of apples, one of bananas and one of pears which should lead to far less wastage. They are also aiming for better in-store displays and stock control.

arrested in prison and could be charged and convicted although prosecutors would have to decide whether it is “in the public interest” to pursue the allegations. Hall’s sentence was doubled when the Attorney-General appealed after some of Hall's victims complained he had been dealt with too leniently. And on Tuesday at Southwark Crown Court in London, former BBC TV and radio star Dave Lee Travis,68, pleaded not guilty to 14 charges of indecent assault and one of sexual touching on 10 women and a girl of 15 from 1976 to 2008 when he was at the BBC and presenting local radio shows. He appeared under his real name of David Patrick

Griffin. He asked the clerk of the court to speak more loudly as he was having difficulty hearing the charges.

Travis, 68, was released on bail and was told he must live in the house he shares with his wife. He has been told not to try and contact any of his victims and will stand trial on 14th January 2014.

His contract with Magic Radio where he was working when arrested has since run out.

Bretón can't adapt Property tax news to prison life for non-residents

José Bretón, who is serving 40 years in jail for the murder of his two children – Ruth aged 6 and José aged 2 – has had to be moved from the Alcolea jail in Córdoba, where the crime took place on October 8th, 2011, and where he was not well received by his fellow prisoners.

Fearing for his life, the authorities decided to transfer him to a jail in Alicante, which has better internal security. A fellow prisoner watches over him to prevent any suicide attempt and also escorts him for four hours in the prison yard. Bretón continues to believe that he will be poisoned if he eats prison fare and will eat from tins and jars which he must open himself and which

because of his "psychopathic, arrogant and narcissistic nature". However, the inside source implied that this may not be important because child murderers and rapists tend not to survive long in Spanish jails.

Civil Guards face backhander charges The trial of 17 Guardia Civil accused of taking money from foreigners at Malaga airport in exchange for not retaining their belongings will start on January 13th next year.

The prosecution is asking for a prohibition of occupying public office of two years to three years nine months and fines from €30 to €600. Apparently it was a

common practice at the airport to the extent that Chinese residents here warned visitors to have a €50 note in their hands "to avoid problems with the Guardia Civil".

The first case came to light on November 18th, 2005, when a Guardia told a Norwegian couple they could not bring perishable food products into the country. He asked them: "What can you do to make

my job easy", and received €50. The couple reported him a few days later and an investigation revealed that a security camera had been faced away from the area where the incidents were taking place.

The usual bribe was €50 but a search of the Guardia post on one occasion revealed one million Turkish pounds and 660 Pakistani rupees.

With Spain’s desire to improve its public accounts deficit, the tax collecting infrastructure has been significantly improved, enabling the tax office to recoup back taxes faster and more efficiently than ever before. This now commonly includes automatic debiting of owed taxes and late payment fines direct from nonresident bank accounts in Spain. As a holiday home owner in Spain one is obliged to comply with Spain’s non-resident fiscal and tax obligations. Some non-resident property owners have been receiving tax notifications and are not aware that their failure to respond can ultimately lead to embargoes on bank accounts. An embargo is a court approved sanction, allowing private bank accounts to be automatically debited, or frozen in the event of insufficient funds.

This is because the tax authority is now stepping up its work on recovery of unpaid taxes and property ownership carries with it fiscal and tax obligations that must not be avoided.

For those making their annual tax declaration with a law or accountancy firm your adviser can provide you with copies of your annual returns if you receive any notification from the tax authority or ‘Hacienda’. You would expect to receive an informative, warning letter first but if you or your advisor have not kept your contact address up-to-date following a sale, this can lead to delays and a failure to react can lead to problems.

For example you may have sold a property and therefore not be paying the annual tax but the tax authority might still advise you as they have a record of your previous annual payments. Again for most people this just means providing a copy of their deed of sale to the tax authority to show that they have no tax to pay.

Some property owners who purchased in the boom years did not commence annual payment of the nonresident taxes and this can result in fines and embargoes once the property ownership comes to the attention of the tax authorities. The cost of appointing a professional to do your tax returns and the tax payments themselves are considerably less than picking up fines of 3.000€ or more for unpaid taxes.

By De Cotta Law

Even if you have not paid for some years it is still worth making up the payment for the last 4 years to avoid any embargo on your bank accounts in future.

Act Now

If you are not a tax resident of Spain but own property here, you must act now, and declare your up-to-date property investments. Action is much easier and cheaper than reaction. A calculation of the tax can be provided quickly and accurately. Each owner is liable, but a couple would pay less than 175€ including IVA, and more joint owners receive a discounted rate in fees to make the declaration; so do ask for advice on this very important matter. This is a small price to pay compared to the very costly and lengthy process of dealing with embargoes and late tax fines.

87-year-old dies after mugging More than 2,100 tremors in a year An 87-year-old Dutch woman has died from a fractured skull after she fell when a motorcyclist snatched her bag. Her husband heard the bike roar away but did not see the perpetrator. The woman was dead when the paramedics arrived on the

scene last Thursday night in La Carihuela, Torremolinos.

Police are searching for the motorcyclist but the snatch happened so quickly that there are no witnesses.

The residents of the towns of Torreperogil and Sabiote, Jaen province, have started to ask why the authorities are not investigating the tremors registered in the area in the past year – more than 2,100 culminating in a tremor of 3.6 on the

Richter scale last Saturday and another of 2.4 on Sunday.

The tremors have not caused any material damage and no-one has been killed or injured, but residents were mystified by the authorities' lack of

interest in investigating the cause. Experts are now calling them "tremors and swarms", and the provincial government has finally agreed to give a grant of €25,000 to researchers at the University of Jaen to look into the matter.

New lease of life for English Cemetery

After years of talks, the town of Minas de Riotinto has acquired for a nominal sum the English cemetery founded by the Rio Tinto copper mining company in 1877 specifically for Protestant foreigners who died in the region. The cemetery contains 56 graves, 47 for Protestants and nine for Catholics working at the company who began to be buried there in 1931. Despite the fact that the cemetery was recognised as a place of cultural interest by the Junta de Andalucía in 2005, the graves have been neglected for decades and the whole place is overgrown with weeds.

Many people in the town are not even aware of its existence. Mayor Rosa Caballero plans to renovate it in a "scrupulous and respectful" way and has commissioned an architect who has worked on similar projects, particularly in Trujillo, Extremadura. The budget for the work will initially be around €40,000. Work has already begun on

MP calls for new law on Gib waters David Morris, the Conservative MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale, said last week that Britain must “take a stand” against Spain and legislate to impose a formal three-mile boundary of territorial waters around Gibraltar. "I personally do not want to see a repeat of British jet skiers being hounded and fired at with plastic bullets by the Spanish Guardia Civil while in Gibraltar waters."

He said no mention was made of territorial waters when Gibraltar was formally ceded to the British in Article 10 of the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713,

Mr Morris said if his Bill is passed, the new border would be protected by the Coastguard Agency of Gibraltar, which already polices the waters around the peninsula. MPs backed Mr Morris's Bill unanimously at first reading but it has no prospect of becoming law in its current form.

The Partido Popular, the Socialst Party and the uP&d voted in favour of the freeze while the united left (Iu) and the eres party abstained.

The real thing

A

friend rang me late on Sunday to remind me that RTVE's 24h channel was showing footage from the last two years of the Franco regime so I immediately switched over. Did it bring back memories! I remember being forced off the footpath in front of the Prado Museum one evening in October 1968 by six men in grey uniforms riding six beautiful horses, which took up the whole pavement. Nobody told them that pavements were for pedestrians and the road for all other traffic, including horses. They were the police known as "grises" (greys because of the uniform) whose main mission was to pursue political dissenters. They were to be avoided at all costs.

B

ut there they were again on my screen on Sunday – not just six of them, more like 60, trying to confine hundreds of rebellious students to their campus. The grises didn't look particularly bothered, although you knew that they would charge into the students wielding their riot sticks at the bat of an eyelid, as they were trained to do. The students looked aggressive but made little attempt to take it out on the grises – unlike today's protesters who delight in provoking the police. The latter are dressed to the nines in riot gear and wield riot shields and many still get injured, while remarkably few protesters get hurt. The grises didn't need riot gear – they could do an awful lot of damage to unprotected bodies with their horses' hooves and their riot sticks – and take great pleasure in doing so. And no-one tried to injure them, except perhaps with a stone from a distance.

T

hose students had to be very brave because if they were grabbed they would disappear into a jail, never knowing when they were going to get out. Today, protesters never spend more than a night in jail, unless they've inflicted serious bodily harm on a policeman. It's the difference between serious repression and the "lite" variety.

I

left Spain in June 1970 so I missed out on the end of the Franco regime. The banned political parties and trade unions were meeting more and more openly abroad and getting more active inside Spain itself, albeit in a clandestine way. The tension reached a pitch in 1975 – Franco died on November 20th that year – as his opponents realised he couldn't last much longer. The whole civilian world was against him, but the military still backed him and that was enough to keep the protesting wolves away. They also knew that if they attempted an armed uprising they would be wiped

out – they simply didn't have the experience that the military and the police had at fighting. So they waited – protesting all the while – for the dictator to die.

A

s I watched the programme, it occurred to me that the hard Left – the more extreme Socialists, the Communist-dominated United Left, the anti-system groups, the youth protest movements, the antieviction groups and all the others who take to the streets at the drop of a hat, would dearly love to recreate that repression and tension. If exploited properly it could lead to the end of the monarchy and the parliamentary system – they hope.

H

owever, back in 1975, more people were more willing to put their necks on the line, because there was an end in sight – the death of Franco, and with him his regime. Today, the protesters themselves don't have a clear objective – some want a republic, others want to "change the system", others just want to cause mayhem for the hell of it. Their notions are hazy, while people back then had a very clear idea of what they wanted – free elections and democracy – and had suffered war, poverty and repression for more than four decades so they had iron in their souls.

B

ack then, if you'd asked people what they most hated they would say Franco or the dictatorship. Today, they'd say the politicians, the monarchy, the bankers, the money markets, corruption, unemployment, evictions – there are so many things to hate in modern society which makes it impossible to find an objective that everyone can focus on.

A

dmittedly, there have been some big protests since Rajoy and the Partido Popular came to power but his opponents seem to be running out of steam. No matter how hard Socialist leader Alfredo Rubalcaba and United Left Commissar Cayo Lara try to play down the figures, the economic tide seems to be turning – very slowly it's true – but they can no longer exploit the cuts as relentlessly as they once could. And people just yawn when you mention the Barcenas scandal. The ERE scandal in Seville – exclusively a Socialist one – is much more interesting. And no doubt the European Court of Human Rights' decision to force Spain to release an ETA assassin will dominate the headlines for days to come.

T

he revolution will never succeed without another Franco.

T

here is a striking difference between what Spain believes is a fair and modern legal system and what the rest of Europe calls an inwardly-focused judicial structure that tends to overlook the country’s outside obligations while at the same time tramples on the rights of many inmates. Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón has been the leading proponent to win tougher sentences for the worst criminals with his penal code reforms. So it was a no brainer that he was duly disappointed over Monday’s ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which threw out a controversial sentencing practice, known more commonly as the Parot doctrine, that has been applied by the Spanish courts and prison system for seven years to calculate the number of days an inmate should spend in prison.

P

arot was mainly used as a government weapon against ETA to ensure that none of its members once they are sent to prison would see the free world again. In a nutshell, it allowed penitentiary authorities to shave off time for good behaviour and points for participating in rehabilitation and social integration programmes from each of the counts – not the entire term – on which a prisoner is convicted. The rule was introduced in 2006 by the Supreme Court, which basically threw out a prior regulation from the 1973 Penal Code that allowed favourable time to be deducted from the entire maximum 30 years sentence. For example, a person whose statute sentences add up to more than 250 years would have trouble getting out after serving the legal 30-year maximum limit if authorities granted remissions on each conviction instead of grouping the entire counts together.

M

onday’s ruling – actually, a reaffirmation of an ECHR’s panel decision last year – grew from an appeal filed on behalf of Inés del Río, an ETA terrorist, who was sentenced to an astronomical term of more than 3,000 years in prison for her participation in, among others, the bloody bomb attack in the Plaza de la República Dominicana in Madrid in 1986. Formulated by complex calculations from prison officials, she should have been released in 2008. But the High Court ruled that her actual release date should be in 2017 based on Parot. She had already been told in 2000 by the High Court that her offences would be grouped together and the maximum to be served was set at 30 years. Del Río appealed, arguing that

the High Court’s decision was “in breach of the principle of nonretroactive application of criminal law,” but her petition was denied. The Constitutional Court also ruled against her, dismissing the case because she failed to show “any relevance” to the Constitution regarding her petition.

B

ut it took the court in Strasbourg to show Spanish judges and the government where they erred; they apparently overlooked the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, to which Spain is a signatory. “While the Court accepts that the States are free to determine their own criminal policy, for example by increasing the penalties applicable to criminal offences, they must comply with the requirements of Article 7 in doing so,” the ECHR wrote. “On this point, the Court reiterates that Article 7 of the Convention unconditionally prohibits the retrospective application of the criminal law where it is to an accused’s disadvantage.”

I

t is still not known how many inmates – ETA prisoners and other convicted felons – may be freed under this new ruling; Parot has been applied to at least 61 ETA members. The High Court voted on Tuesday to release Del Río. This latest judicial slap in the face from Strasbourg once again goes to show that Spain – and especially Mariano Rajoy's Partido Popular (PP) administration – conveniently tries to overlook its international obligations when dictating domestic policy.

T

his PP government has gone out of its way to help terrorism victims’ groups because this is where the votes count, but it has completely ignored the families of the victims of the Franco dictatorship who are demanding help in finding their lost loved ones. Amnesty International last week became the latest global organisation to publicly call on the Rajoy government to obey the international treaties Spain has signed. And following the requests by a UN working group investigating disappearances during the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship, the United Nations will no doubt up the pressure in the coming months. The PP often forgets that Spain is no longer the isolated nation it once was.

Can you help Animals In Distress ? (A.I.D.) A.I.D. is a charity in Andalucia registered in 2008 and run by husband and wife Joe and Janice. They are both dedicated to helping stray, abandoned, abused animals found in Coin and the surrounding villages. All the rescued dogs are fostered by private individuals as well as locally in Joe and Janice´s own home, which helps the animals ease into a family environment.

Joe says:

As well as helping and looking after stray dogs, we also have a cattery at home for about 20 stray cats and a charity shop in Alhaurin el Grande. Our mission is to help and then find good secure homes for the stray, abandoned, and abused animals in our care. At any one time each one of us will foster from one to several animals. Most of our dogs and cats are homed in Holland and Belgium with a few to Germany, the U.K. and other European countries. In order to further help the animal situation here in Spain we network with several organisations that work more or less on the same principles that we do. Our charity does not have any paying members and we are classified as ‘Animos sin lucro’ – an exact translation would be ‘intentions without profit’, in other words all the funds raised are used for helping the animals. None of our shop volunteers or the committee receives any payments in any way, shape or form. We really need everyone's support for the sake of the animals – in any way you can, be it via cash donations, unwanted articles which we can sell in our charity shop or perhaps support for our monthly auction at La Hiedra restaurant in Alhaurin el Grande by buying, selling or donating items (it’s also a great social evening).

Since 2010 we have had a close relationship with a Belgian charity so that more dogs can find forever homes. Since 2005 we have

helped and found homes for over 250 dogs each year. All our animals have an EU passport, are wormed, vaccinated – including rabies – chipped, sterilised and tested for Leishmaniasis. All our rescued dogs that go abroad also undertake a five-part blood test. These things are done in proper veterinary premises via a qualified vet.

Part of our work is also helping other small charities and individuals that take in stray dogs. Almost every week we deliver bags of dog food in Coin, Alhaurin, Alora, Cartama and more ... to several people that are simply scraping a living every single day with what little funds they have and whenever possible we also sterilise and/or vaccinate their dogs.

We also help individuals to get their pets back home rather than leave them behind, which seems to be the trend these last few years due to the so called crisis. As far as we are concerned we have always said ‘A dog is for life not just for Spain’.

At any one time we tend to have in our care a maximum of 50 dogs; this ensures that we can cater for all their needs, food, medicine, and operations. As an example, we had a phone call a couple of weeks ago from a lady in Alhaurin el Grande about a young Mastin collapsed on the side of the road. My wife told her to take it to the vet and we would meet her there. When we arrived we realised that the dog was very thin and starving, full of fleas. She was passing blood from her rear and her gums were very white – she was totally anemic. The vet did X-rays and it turned out that the dog had a strangulated gut as well as many other complications and had to have an emergency operation. All went well with the operation and she stayed a few days at the hospital. The dog (now called Hope, pictured above) was going to be looked after by the people that found her but the following day they said she had taken a turn for the worse and she was

rushed back to hospital. After a few days of bad deterioration we thought it would be best to stop her suffering and we asked the vet if he could put her to sleep. He said that perhaps we could give her a couple more days to see if things improved. Well the dreaded

phone call arrived at 9.30 am on Sunday morning saying that Hope was no longer able to fight her illness and that she should be put to sleep ASAP. Jan and the foster carers rushed to the vets to be with her. I would like to thank Lauro Vet Hospital in Alhaurin el Grande for trying so hard. R.I.P. my sweet XX.

We now need to find the funds for her operation and treatment, which originally was estimated at €400 but was more like €679. We tried raising funds via Funraz and Paypal but have only managed €190. Pleeeease help us, even if it’s only a small amount as every little bit helps and the money that we will have to find is money that can be helping other dogs. So please dig a little bit in your pocket. We know times are hard but if only all of you gave just 1, 3 or 5 Euros it would make such a difference. Please donate via our website. We usually only ask for donations now and then but there are simply too many animals needing help. Forgive us if we keep on but WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! To donate please go to our website www.animals-in-distress.eu Our vet bills are still running at 3000 Euros every month so your support is greatly needed so that we can help even more animals.

Not all dogs or cats get to go to new homes. Some are lame, blind or have Leishmaniasis and they will spend the rest of their lives with us or with a foster home. This is where we also need your support. You can sponsor a dog or cat via our website for as little as €5 per month and

this takes off some of the pressure of the everyday animal cost from the charity thus releasing funds to help other animals.

To all of you who know us please keep up your support in whichever way you can. If you are not local perhaps you can donate to our charity via our website and also spread the word about how we are trying to make a difference in this part of Spain. If you are local you can also make a donation to the charity and/or donate goods to our charity shop in Alhaurin el Grande (nearly opposite Mercadona) where everything is sold to help the animals in a variety of different ways. If you have a few hours to spare, why not volunteer at the shop? We are open Monday to Saturday 10am to 2pm. My wife will be very grateful if you do because at present she is covering the shop most days due to a shortage of volunteers and is not able to go about other jobs to help the animals until after closing time.

On a final note:

If you have found a dog

Do not automatically phone a dog centre or charity to take the animal in. Most are always full to capacity and the dog might have an owner.

This is how you can personally help the animal: 1. Check if it belongs to any of your neighbours. 2. Take it to your local vet and they will check to see if the dog is micro-chipped. If it is then they will contact the owner. 3. Go to your local Police Station, dog pound or vet and ask if anyone has lost the dog. Owners usually go there when they lose a dog. 4. Take a look in the lost pages of Animal Charities and the free papers. The News (comes out every Wednesday) advertises dogs that need new homes every week and also will put in advertisements for people who have lost their dogs, usually with a photograph so you may see

the dog you’ve found there. 5. If you can keep the dog for a few days, then put a poster in vets’ offices, the Police Station, shops and send a photo and details to animal charities etc., 6. If you cannot keep the dog at all then contact Animal Charities to see whether the dog can be taken in or if they could suggest as to where the dog could be placed.

Thank you for taking the time to read about us and if you need any help or information about anything to do with animals we shall try to help where we can.

Costa del Sol 41 Club - Play reading new members welcome diary date

The Costa del Sol 41 Club held their regular monthly meeting at Restaurante El Caserio (The White Venta) on Monday 14th October 2013. It was a great night, unusually with wives/partners and an after dinner guest speaker – Dr Eleanor Mair Williams, a former GP from Swansea, DNA specialist and forensic scientist, making it more of a Welsh take-over than ever before. She had a lovely way of putting over some slightly unpalatable facts about DNA and its use in identifying criminals and parentage. Apparently, one in 10 fathers is, shall we say, mistaken! With

THESPA have announced their next play reading for Wednesday October 30th, when they will be presenting two plays.

more than 10 guys sitting around the table, there were a lot of sideways glances.

The first will be ‘The Last Word’ by Rex Baker, a dramatic play concerning suspected plagiarism in the academic world, but with a twist in the tail.

Dr Williams was thanked for a most entertaining talk that she had concluded with the comment “Men have had their day”!

A small amount of business followed which included the announcement that a small profit had been made from the recent and most enjoyable 21st 41 Club Iberian Cluster held at the Hotel Melia Marbella Banus. In addition, one member recently returned from a wedding in Tenby

On Halloween - A Murder On The Disorientated Express

A Baffling Who Dunnit at the Cala Luna Restaurant in Fuengirola on Thursday, 31st October 7.00 for 7.30.p.m. Enjoy a 3-course meal with unlimited wine for only €25, whilst you watch some of your favourite local actors act out the plot of Murder on The Disorientated Express

The Plot

The Disorientated Express, probably one of the most luxurious trains in the world, is always fully booked. Even now, in 1938, with war looming menacingly on the horizon, her luxury Pullman coaches are packed with the travelling rich and famous making their way from Istanbul to Constantinople, to celebrate Halloween.

The train has excelled in reliability and punctuality over the years, but today all that is about to change. A famous rocket designer known as Werner

Von Black, has been discovered in his sleeping compartment – Dead! The only question is: Who killed him?

Guard A Loo will guide you through the proceedings – then, with the Guard’s help, it is up to you to interrogate the suspects and work out who the murderer is.

The suspects

SIGMUND FROID – a Cold Austrian Psychoanalyst, with a calm bedside manner who is obsessed with your dreams and sex life! HEIDI EVIDENCE – a Swiss Bank Clerk, a very beguiling lady with an innocent expression.

IVAN EGO – A Russian Inventor, pessimistic and pragmatic to the last. He is reliable and difficult to understand as he is fuelled

They thanked the member and posed for photographs.

Once again, a very good a la carte meal and as you can see from the photographs, the wine flowed freely.

The meeting was closed with the final toast “May the hinges of friendship never rust!”

This will be followed by a three-course meal after which the second play, ‘A Night in Front of the Box’ by David Titchener will be performed. This is a good natured comedy about the goings-on in an apartment block, a real life soap opera; a domestic battle for priority use of the T.V. Set! This is more entertaining than most soap operas usually are!

As usual the performance will be at the Masonic Centre in Los Boliches. Doors open at 7.00 pm for a prompt start at 7.30 pm. Please make your reservations in good time, preferably by Monday the 28th of October, so that the catering arrangements can be completed. Telephone Ann Ellis on 95 245 11 13 (you can leave a message on her answering machine) or Email Ann on annellis65@hotmail.com

The annual subscription for members is still €10 euros and for those who renewed their subscriptions in September, your membership cards can be collected on the 30th

Pet of the week

The next meeting will be at Restaurante El Caserio on Monday 11th November at 7.30pm for 8.00pm. Any past members of Round Table or 41 Club members wishing to attend this or any future meeting should contact Gareth George on 952 818 772 or 627 462 410. They would be made most welcome.

by Vodka.

DEE SYPHER – a Code Breaker, who is secretive and quiet, a real cloak and dagger sort of girl. HERR CUTT – a German Barber, never without his trusty pair of scissors.

KIKKI DE´LEGGS – a French Can Can Dancer, always dressed to show off her fabulous legs, and is always Ra-Ra ready for anything. Advance bookings are essential so phone the Cala Luna now to reserve your place on 633 156 574.

ICE Fayre The International Club of Estepona held their Autumn Fayre on Saturday 19th October. Many members and their friends attended to browse the various stalls or enter one of the competitions – darts to win a cow pie, photography, ladies’ and gents’ baking competitions, flower arranging, and vegetable creation. Other attractions included a bottle tombola, white elephant stall, hoopla and bar skittles.

Puppy

This puppy was found dumped and starving. He is around five months old and verywell behaved. Staying in a foster home at the moment, he now would like to find a permanent home where he can settle and become a valued member of the family. He has been nursed back to full health by his foster mum who says he is

excellent with people. He lives with four other dogs at the moment whom he gets on well with and is fine with cats. He has not, as yet been introduced to children but it is not envisaged that it would be a problem as he has been so well behaved in all other situations so far. Willies galore at The Salon Varietes! What a night out it turned out to be... The Salon Varietes theatre in Fuengirola staged “The Full Monty” until Sunday and what a roaring success it was. For those of you who don’t know the story it’s about what befalls a group of six factory working men when the factory closes in the Sheffield area of the UK. The main character, Gary, has fallen behind with the maintenance payments he has to pay to his ex-wife and she is threatening not to allow him to see his son. Gary is desperate and, when he happens to pass a place where the Chippendales are playing, he hatches a plan that he and his mates could do better. The Chippendales, after all, don’t go “all the way” to the “full Monty”! They are a real motley crew with one weedy chap who lives with his mum and doesn’t realise he’s gay, one total show-off (who also turns out to be gay – so happy ending there), one foreman who is older and skinny, Big Black Fella “Horse” who is worried that he’s not up to the legend, and Gary’s best friend Dave who is somewhat overweight and has lost all self confidence (of course, the whole audience loved Dave). And then there was the blonde, totty swigging piano player whose timing was perfect. When they whipped off their red G-Strings and Gary dropped his hat by mistake on Saturday evening ... the whole place was in uproar. Quite brilliant!

The enduring elegance of fabulous fashions

The lifestyles of the people who bought and drove the cars are recreated in the artefacts and fashions which form complementary collections. Women – and men too – have always enjoyed marvelling at the “essential” accessory displays, particularly the

extensive showcases of designer hats (the hat being an indispensable part of a woman's wardrobe, lovingly created as a work of art in Paris during the 1930s), not to mention the lavish hat boxes and portmanteau. There are hats from the beautiful to the bizarre, from Monte Carlo to Ascot and then, of course, there is the reproduction of Schiaparelli's famous “shoe hat”, a fashion statement only for the brave!

Now the museum has added to its fashion collection with a mouthwatering display of haute

couture from the top fashion houses. Household names such as Chanel, Dior, Balmain, Saint Laurent, Feraud, Lanvin, Balanciaga, Worth, Cardin, Moschino, Givenchy, Valentino … are all represented in a kaleidoscope of lavishness in a carefully arranged and lit area where the dresses, suits, coats and accessories shine like jewels – bringing back the times when women were elegant and ornamental, with not a pair of denim jeans in sight! The concept, of course, seems dated and out of place in today's more egalitarian world and ardent feminists would certainly take issue with the idea that “women were never seen without makeup – even by their husbands”. But as a microcosm of a vanished era the display is stunning – heavily encrusted brocades, elaborate beading, ostrich feathers, exquisitely simple cutting and draping, ruching, myriads of pleats, a skirt with so much material that it covers the whole of the couch when its wearer sits down (ankles elegantly crossed of course!). These were the decades of glamour, the years of great

Since its inauguration some three years ago the Museo Automovilistico de Malaga – Malaga's car museum – has been much visited and much admired by people of all ages, nationalities and from all walks of life. This is no mere display of old vehicles, of interest only to the dedicated petrol heads, but a treasure trove of carefully crafted arts and crafts evoking the spirit and ambience of different eras, on show in a stunningly renovated building that used to be an old tobacco factory. The cars themselves are only part of the appeal since they are described and

glamour, take for instance the silk-finished interior of the Belgian Minerva luxury sedan with its silver embellishments on the bodywork, or the jet black Rolls Royce covered in Swarovski crystals, not to mention the long bright pink cadillac.

Of course, the museum is not only about nostalgia and vanished eras. There are ultra modern concept cars too, such as the slightly sinister “Star Wars” model, the 2010 “Alien” which runs on hydrogen and a solarpowered vehicle that resembles a giant fish. The displays are constantly being added to. Some models are even for sale, and others can be hired if you really want to make an entrance. And this year there is yet another innovation, a Las Vegas-style wedding chapel in the heart of La Belle Epoque collection, so if you fancy getting married surrounded by the “Parisian spirit of the golden age” of the twentieth century this is the place (the gardens outside would also be a fantastic setting for wedding photographs). The car museum has its own car park and is situated on Avenida Sor Teresa Prat, 17. In keeping with the Lux Mundi vision of being an ecumenical centre – open to all – all members of all Christian Churches are invited to attend this service and partake in a symbolic renewal of their Christian baptismal vows. The ecumenical service, which includes A Clare Benediction, Ave Maria and Panis Angelicus starts at 5.00 pm at the Basilica site on the seafront at San Pedro de Alcántara. Evidently it can be a little hard to find, but seek and ye shall find – if that fails ask, as locally it is very well known. You will possibly be examining your roots this week, the area that provides you with security and comfort. Traditions and family values rear their head and you may miss certain things from the past. Habits could be up for review and great benefits are found from delving deep within and looking at how you can improve your lifestyle in order to fit with who you are now and your changing needs. The bringer of optimism and faith, not normally your forte but the difference is this week goals feel more in reach and you finally have a plan of action. Cooperation from others means a lot to you right now and it will try your patience if others aren’t willing to do their fair share. Relationship questions are likely – perhaps you are frightened of letting someone get too close through a deep fear of loss and therefore you have feelings of jealousy instead of intimacy? If you are single then this is the week when it is time to open up to new people, places and even ideas. If you are in a relationship then you may be considering planning a surprise to liven things up a bit. It is important to spend time at the moment with those that you love and care for. The weekend is not the time to take chances with finances, although, you could feel an urge to invest creatively in your own ideas. Reputation and confidence are under the scanner, there is an ability to impress everyone except those of course who understand you the best and realise how you really feel. However, you will sparkle when living up to any obligations. Career changes are continuing and are still likely to occur at any time so be ready to be adaptable. Keep on top of all practical matters and paperwork even if it seems tedious. If you ever needed an excuse to stop worrying and to start having fun then you have it. This is the week to do something different, enjoy each moment and live for the now. New romance opportunities are likely and open up a different way of thinking. Let the love swoop into your life and let it sweep you off your feet. Creatively you are at an all time high and well able to produce exceptional pieces of work. Do not assume you know what is happening and what others are thinking – perhaps you don’t and you will find it easy to make a judgement. Your energy levels receive a boost and you will feel healthier than you have for a while. This is a relatively quiet time for you when focusing on existing projects and spending time within the home is where you wish to be. Even though your social community beckons you, make sure you strike a balance and put your needs first.

What is needed is a team effort, this will benefit your career, your reputation and your life, this is not the time to go it alone but to join forces to achieve the end result. There is likely to be a major decision waiting in the wings but take your time with the choice. There is no rush, make sure you have all the facts at your disposal first. Networking could prove useful and beneficial September 23rd - giving you many clues and ideas on how to proceed. October 22nd

WEDNESDAY, October 23RD 2013

There could be a tendency to spend more than you know you should and items will seem far more tempting than usual. Make sure you have covered all of your basic expenses before you spend frivolously as your taste can be expensive. New goals and dreams that you have been developing may take hold and you could feel excitement, however, they are in a metamorphosis stage and are not yet ready to be unleashed on the world – a little more patience.

You are attracting a lot of attention your way and even if you do not feel like making a splash in your environment, it will happen regardless of your intentions. Be discriminating this weekend about who you confide in and who you let into your inner circle, perhaps protect yourself by maintaining your own personal boundaries. A creative breakthrough is yours this week and things just seem to fall into place.

I know you like to do things yourself and rarely ask for help but sometimes although your shoulders bear great weight and are capable of it, even you need support. Relationships reach a deeper level of understanding and intimacy. You possibly gain an insight into your own nature during the coming days and this will give a quiet confidence in your abilities. You may make a sacrifice for someone you love and not get instant thanks but they will quietly appreciate your actions. Acquaintances and friends will flock providing you with opportunities to expand in areas you have only dreamed of. It is all about working together at the moment. Your working situation is improving and so is your overall health right now, so be careful this week that you are not tempted to over-indulge. New ways of thinking and a fun social time is highlighted – this will lead you to have a fresh perspective on a stale situation. Cooperation over competition will ensure that a lot of productivity occurs right now. You do not need to waste your energy on fighting but more on uniting. Your creative potential has been developing in different directions and this knock on effect will attract others towards you and of course you will charm them as you go. Do not limit yourself by making a final statement, go with the flow and remain open to new ideas.

Directions 1. Spread the lemon curd over the bottom of the trifle bowl. Stack some of the sponge fingers upright around the inside edge of the bowl to make a wall at the bottom. 2. Put the remaining sponge fingers into a mixing bowl, sprinkle over some limoncello, stir through and heap them into the trifle bowl, adding a final splash of limoncello. 3. Pour double cream into a saucepan and add the sugar. Bring to the boil over a moderate heat, turn down and leave to simmer for 2-3 minutes. 4. Remove from the heat, stir in the lemon juice, then pour this mixture over the sponge fingers. Refrigerate for a couple of hours or overnight, until set.

5. When set, place the tangerine segments over the mixture. Whip the cream until thick, and smooth it over the trifle. Return the trifle to the fridge to chill. 6. For the honeycomb: Heat a saucepan until hot and add the caster sugar and golden syrup. Allow the sugar to dissolve so the mixture begins to caramelise. 7. Add bicarbonate of soda and quickly whisk to combine. Immediately pour the mixture into a lined non-stick tray and set aside to cool, uncovered. 8. Once cooled, break the honeycomb into medium-sized pieces and spread over the top of the trifle. Sprinkle with orange zest and grate chocolate over the top and serve.

ink e cable is dead Geek says Pioneer Go Wireless with any device Cables are old school, obviously, but wireless music tech can often feel daunting due to the sheer volume of acronyms: Bluetooth, Airplay, UPnP, DNLA, HTC connect etc – how do they differ? What tech is best? The answers to all these questions will vary depending on your setup, but the important point is that wireless music tech is here to stay, and it's not as difficult as you might think to get involved and go wireless! In reality, removing the wires and going wireless translates into speakers where you want them in the living room, not just where the cables reach, and being able seamlessly to listen to your favourite tune of the moment on whatever device you have to hand. The idea is that going

wireless is hassle free. That has never been truer than it is today. Whether its Apple Airplay speakers designed by Andrew Jones, through to Pioneer's BTS range of Bluetooth speakers, it's you in the aural driving seat. The seminal XW-SMA speaker range, for example, caters for all tastes by using Wireless Direct, HTC Connect, AirPlay and DLNA. The one thing Pioneer products have in common is a longstanding commitment to highly engineered excellence in audio design – and with a 75 year pedigree, that’s no mere hot air. With the growing desire for streaming music, a wide

range of Pioneer products now come fully-equipped with Spotify Connect compatibility so you can stream your favourite tracks wirelessly more easily than ever before. In short, whatever wireless route you choose to take and whichever technology works for you, Pioneer has something suitable. Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Sue,

My son is suffering with pimples and spots on his face, does this mean he has acne? If so what treatment can he have? Val, Coin

Dear Val,

Pimples and spots are often a very good indication of acne, especially if they are red and have pus in them. Many treatments and products for acne are very aggressive and in my opinion often makes things worse.

I firmly believe in treating it very gently so as to not overstimulate the sebaceous glands that are already working overtime. My recommendation is a

balancing facial which gently over a period of time calms everything down. At home use gentle products regularly making sure they contain anti bacterial and anti fungus properties, if not the acne will never get a chance to heal properly.

If it is a very severe case a visit to the doctor may be in order but drugs used to treat acne can have devastating side effects. Puberty plays a huge role in this so rest assured in time things will be a lot better and with a young skin treated correctly the scarring that used to be seen on clients that had acne are extremely rare nowadays. Dear Sue,

I have a lot of pain in

my big toe nail and there is redness and swelling down the sides of the nail. Any ideas what might be causing this? Geoff, Mijas Dear Geoff,

From your description this sounds like an ingrowing nail. This can be very painful and needs expert advice so first consult your doctor or podiatrist. You may be given a regime to follow yourself and be shown how to shape the nail to avoid it recurring but very occasionally surgery is necessary. Dear Calvin,

Dear Rosie,

MCI which is Methylchloroisothazlinone and MI which is Methylisthiazolinone are preservatives found in a number of cosmetics, shampoos and skin care products and they also have several uses in industry. They promote the shelf life of a product.

The EU are currently trying to ban the use of both MCI and MI used together and states that although there have been known allergic reactions the numbers are comparatively low. A sign of allergy to MCI and MI is contact dermatitis.

Dear Calvin,

What is the difference between semi-permanent colour and permanent colour? How do I know which is best for me? Lyndsey, Mijas Dear Lyndsey,

The difference between semi-permanent and permanent colour is how long you want the colour to last and how much of a change do you want? Semi-permanent colour washes out over a period of time, approximately 6-8 washes, and because of this you will not be left with a re growth because semi's do not contain ammonia or peroxide so you can only darken or add tone. You cannot

lighten the hair.

Permanent colour contains peroxide, this means it will not wash out but have to grow out. Your roots will need re-touching every 6-8 weeks.

Personally if this is your first time colouring your hair I would opt for the semi-permanent route.

Sleep 'detoxes' the brain The brain uses sleep to wash away the waste toxins built up during a hard day's thinking, according to researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Centre.

Sleep researchers have often wondered why animals sleep at all when it leaves them vulnerable to predators. Sleep has been shown to have a big role in the fixing of memories in the brain and learning, but the US team believe that "housework" may be one of the primary reasons for sleep. They said: "The brain only has limited energy at its disposal and it appears that it must choose between two different functional states – awake and aware or asleep and cleaning up. "You can think of it like having a house party. You can either entertain the guests or clean up the house, but you can't really do both at the same time."

They added that the true significance of the findings would be known

only after human studies, but doing similar experiments in an MRI machine would be relatively easy.

Many conditions which lead to the loss of brain cells such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease are characterised by the buildup of damaged proteins in the brain. The researchers suggested that problems with the brain's cleaning mechanism may contribute to such diseases, but caution more research is needed.

The charity Alzheimer's Research UK said more research would be needed to see whether damage to the brain's waste clearance system could lead to diseases like dementia, but the findings offered a "potential new avenue for investigation".

Monkeys and Mumford and Sons for the gong with the Oxford-based group’s Yannis Philippakis saying it was the best award to win, adding: "It's like where there's no trickery and it's just the five characters in the band. We're playing the best we've ever played, the energy is something I'll treasure forever."

A “genuinely chuffed” Robbie Williams got a lifetime achievement award being named as “Q Idol”. He said: "I'm 40 next year and I've been around for loads and loads of years, and people still deem me important enough to roll me out and get me here and give me an award, and for that I'm very, very grateful."

Chrissie Hynde walked away with classic songwriter gong while the reformed 90s band Suede won the icon award. Brett Anderson of Suede said: "It's nice to be recognised, 20 years after our first album it’s nice of people still to care."

Bowie walks away with a big fat nothing

Noel Harrison Shooting in dies aged 79 Mosque

“inappropriate”

The singer was probably best known for his “Windmills of your mind” recording from the film The Thomas Crown Affair that won the Best Song Oscars category in 1968. He said of the song: "It didn't seem like a big deal at the time. I went to the studio one afternoon and sang it and pretty much forgot about it. I didn't realise until later what a timeless, beautiful piece Michel Legrand and the Bergmans had written.”

Harrison, who lived in Devon and was the son of world-renowned actor Rex

Harrison, had five children and four grandchildren and had performed at the local Black Dog community hall in the village where he lived on Saturday evening before returning home and suffering a heart attack. He died in hospital some hours later.

His wife said the performance had been "extremely successful", but he had had "a long drive home" and was "exhausted" when he returned. She said: "He will be loved and missed by more people than I ever knew."

Rihanna was in trouble at the weekend as she tried to film an “inappropriate” photoshoot in the grounds of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi on Saturday and was asked to leave with one comment in Arabic complaining that she seemed to think she was on a Californian beach.

The mosque is one of the biggest places of Muslim worship and is located in the capital of the UAE. A statement from the mosque said of the Barbadian star who was dressed in headscarf, black jumpsuit and wearing crimson lipstick, that she had not sought permission for the shoot saying: "The singer entered on a private visit without introducing herself and without prior coordination with the administration. She was asked to leave before entering the mosque after she posed in ways that do not match the (mosque's) sacred status. "

She later posted images to photo-sharing site Instagram. The mosque said it was important that no visitor "fails to meet the standards of decency required to enter the mosque, such as by posing for inappropriate photographs or by sitting in disrespectful positions".

Get the right gear now Next week will see the annual knees ups to celebrate Halloween. Many of the bars, restaurants and clubs will be holding parties on Thursday, Friday and over the weekend to celebrate the year’s ghoulish carryings on so you’ll need to get the cobwebs off all your stored clothes for the night. On second thoughts ... don’t bother .., the more cobwebs the better! Many of the cards and gifts stores will be selling outfits, long stick-on fingernails if you haven’t already got them, hats, brooms, cauldrons and nightmarish make-up for you to be the not-quitebelle-of-the-ball wherever you end up. So have a look in next

Opinion

Terence Davies

Let me make it clear first of all that, in my opinion, to have a child go missing and not know for years what has happened to him or her must be one of the worst things that can happen to a parent. For Kate and Gerry McCann who have protested their innocence in any wrongdoings in the disappearance of 5-yearold Madeleine in 2008 their efforts to find their daughter, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds and having audiences with the Pope along the way it has been a very busy 6+ years. Your article on Madeleine last week was insightful and informative. Mrs McCann has been interviewed on TV again pleading for the return of her daughter and doesn’t seem to be able to understand why anyone should think that any of this was their fault. They seem to have taken on an almost saint-like quality and woe betide anyone who has a go at them but, at the end of the day, it was they who left little Madeleine and her two younger siblings in an apartment while they went out for a night’s jolly with

their mates. Scotland Yard have a timeframe of when the McCanns checked on their children after leaving them, according to the reports, at 8:30pm. Mr. McCann went and had a look at them at 9:05pm while Mrs McCann went again at 10pm and raised the alarm. That leaves half an hour between when they went out to the first check on the children and a whole hour until the next check. I have asked many people about this and, without exception they say that they would never have left their children alone in an apartment in a foreign place at all. Most wouldn’t have left them alone at home while they popped next door to a neighbour’s! So, yes, in my opinion they are to blame. Had they have been in the apartment with their children where they should have been, save for someone crawling through a window, it would have been impossible for the incident to have happened. And what happens now if they find Madeleine? If she was abducted by a family desperate to have a child because they were unable

to conceive, of course the act would have been entirely wrong but will Madeleine have been living happily with them for the last six-odd years of her life and do you then uproot her and give her back to people who are guilty of child neglect? If the parents had been a roadsweeper and a shop assistant from a council house in a poor area of Liverpool, what would have happened to them I wonder? Would they have been charged because they had failed to look after their child properly? Would Social Services have had the other children (twins) taken away from them or been put on the “At Risk” register? You can bet your life they would have! As for Madeleine who would be around 11 years old now, I hope her life since the abduction has been full of joy and that the tales of her being taken by paedophile rings are entirely fabrication. One can only hope and I suspect that, unless there’s a break in the police enquiries soon, we may never know what really happened to her.

in one of the terminals so everybody that could be found had to be shifted to the other. Now, you would think that, if there was absolutely no information on these boards, you would go to the information desk or the airline desk of the company you were trying to fly with and find out what was happening. Why then are we hearing people whingeing about missing their flights? Were they stuck in the loos and couldn’t get out? Were they

having such a great time in Duty Free that they couldn’t be ar**d to keep an eye on the time? Were they legless in one of the many bars or had their faces so stuck in their Burger Kings they couldn’t move? I think that, actually, they were probably all too thick to go and ask questions, find out where they were supposed to be and get there. It’s just a lot easier to think you can moan about it afterwards and get the money back on your flights!

Your story in this week's The News about the topic for your talk reminds me of the time that I was hosting a lunch at which Eamon Andrews, the late TV presenter, was giving the after dinner address. I asked him what he would be talking about so as to include the information in

my introduction. He said, "normally that's between me and God but, today, I'm afraid only God knows what I'll be talking about, because I haven't a clue!" Of course, once he got to his feet, the words flowed and he left his audience rolling in the aisles.

Comment By Ken Campbell

Photographing stars You have probably seen photographs in magazines and on TV of stars in the night sky; well it is really quite easy to take photographs yourself.

W

ith today’s modern digital cameras it costs nothing in development and you can see the results right away without having to wait ages for the images to be processed.

B

ecause the stars are obviously quite faint you will need to have a camera that allows for a long time exposure which will keep the shutter open allowing more light to be captured. And because the shutter will be staying open for a long time the camera must not move during the exposure so you will also need a tripod or some other way of keeping the camera steady.

A

ttach your camera to the tripod and point it at the part of the sky you wish to photograph. Try to be in an area with as little light pollution as possible, the darker the sky the better your image will appear. Switch off the autofocus mechanism and manually adjust the focus to infinity or landscape setting, switch off the auto-flash. Set the ‘film’ speed or ISO setting to 400 ASA; a faster ‘film’ setting is more sensitive to fainter light. Set the exposure or shutter speed to 30 seconds and the widest aperture possible, you can always experiment with longer or shorter exposures. Now, to avoid any vibration or movement of the camera use the camera’s self-timer or a cable release to fire the shutter.

A N

fter the photograph has been displayed you can always adjust any of the settings until you are satisfied with the image. It is that simple! ow you can begin to get creative with your pictures. Because of the movement of the Earth, any exposures over 45-60 seconds will cause the stars to begin to streak on the image. This streaking can be quite appealing and if you leave the shutter open for several minutes instead of seconds then the streaking will become more and more pronounced. I have seen photographs that have been exposed for several hours and the streak effect is quite remarkable. If you point your camera at the North Star and give it a very long exposure then this star appears to remain still while all the other stars create curved arcs circling around it.

T

he colours of the stars become more pronounced during long exposure photographs and the variations in their respective brightness can be seen. Some fainter deep sky objects that are

normally quite hard to see with the naked eye can appear on the image. The Andromeda Galaxy and the Orion nebula both show up well on even 30 second exposures.

I

f you want to include the Moon in your image it is better to block out the Moon for part of the exposure otherwise it will appear over exposed. You will have to experiment with how long to keep the Moon obscured depending on how much of the Moon is illuminated; a Full Moon needs only a fraction of a second exposure.

I

n mid November the Earth will pass through the debris left behind by the Comet Temple-Tuttle. The tiny particles will crash into the Earth’s upper atmosphere and create shooting stars or meteors during the annual Leonid meteor shower. This will be a great opportunity to try and photograph a meteor.

T

o catch a falling star simply set your camera on its tripod pointing at any part of the sky – as meteors can appear anywhere – set an exposure time for between 5 and 10 minutes and be patient. If you are very lucky a meteor will zoom across the area of the sky that your camera is looking at creating a streak crossing the star trails on the image. Patience and good luck are the key words here! Some years I have snapped away all night and not managed to capture one image of a meteor but in 2008 there was quite a flurry of meteors from the Leonids and I managed to photograph six or seven over a three-hour period. It’s a bit like fishing but a lot more fun!

’ll be giving details of an up-coming partial eclipse of the Sun visible from Spain in next week’s ‘The News’. appy Stargazing.

Lorenzo wins Australian MotoGP as Marquez is black flagged Jorge Lorenzo has given his chances of winning the MotoGp championship a huge boost with his win, especially after championship leader Marc Marquez was disqualified in a dramatic race at Phillip Island on Sunday. Yamaha rider Lorenzo started on pole and crossed the line nearly seven seconds ahead of Dani Pedrosa, with Valentino Rossi beating Britain’s Cal Crutchlow for the third podium spot.

Marquez was black flagged with five laps to go after he stayed on the track one lap longer than required before taking a mandatory pitstop. Marquez's Honda team had said it was a pit-board error which led to their rider being disqualified. That meant the 20year-old rookie didn't take any points from the race, allowing Lorenzo to narrow the gap on the championship standings to just 18 points with only two rounds of the season left.

Marquez would have become the youngest ever MotoGP champion this

weekend if he had managed to outscore Lorenzo by eight points. Honda rider Marquez had been hot on the heels of Lorenzo for most of the race, with a few bumps shared when the younger Spaniard rejoined the field from pit lane. Officials were forced to shorten the race to just 19 laps – down from the original 27 – just hours before it was due to start over concerns about rider safety. Tyre provider Bridgestone embarrassingly admitted it could not guarantee its rear slicks would be safe beyond 14 laps because of the

temperatures being experienced on the circuit's new tarmac. It later revised that down to just 10 laps. As a result, organisers cut the race distance and ordered all riders to make a mandatory pitstop before the end of lap 10 to switch to a bike with fresh tyres.

conditions. Lorenzo had earlier expressed concerns about the change in format, worried about the danger of sending riders in and out of such a narrow pit lane mid-race.

Marshalls get ready to black flag Marc Marquez

Never before in MotoGP history has such a move been imposed in dry

Marquez will have to wait until next week's penultimate round in Japan to have another crack at the world championship in his debut MotoGP season.

New BMW 4 Series Coupe BMW says that Europe will be the main market for its 4-series coupe, which replaces the 3-series coupe in the company's product lineup. They also emphasised that the 4 series is more than a coupe version of the 3-series sedan. "The 4 series is not the 3-series sedan with only two doors, it is a completely independent car made for customers with sporty expectations," said Martin Schweinhuber, 4-series project manager, at a press event in Estoril, Portugal recently.

The only body components the 3- and 4series models have in common are their bonnets and door handles. Prices for the 4 series start at €35,750 in Germany, €1,600 more than the previous 3-series coupe and €2,350 more than a standard 3 series. Falko Radomski, marketing manager for the 4 series, said BMW raised the price

because the 4 series has better standard equipment than the 3series coupe. Radomski expects 50 percent of 4series sales will be in Europe, 30 percent in North America and the balance in China and elsewhere.

Following on from the 4 Series coupe, next spring they will be launching the 4-series folding hardtop convertible, which is based on the coupe. An M4 coupe is likely to follow in late 2014 and an M4 convertible variant in 2015.

Spain extends the scrappage scheme for third time Spain has said it would extend for the third time a scheme to subsidise purchases of new cars that has helped reverse a fall in deliveries in the country. Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro said on Thursday last week that the government would add another 70 million euros to the scheme after an initial 220 million euros announced in 2012 and earlier this year ran out. Under the scheme, people who scrap their old car and buy a new one get a rebate of 2,000 euros, half from the government and half from the carmaker. Sales of new cars in

Spain grew 29 percent to more than 45,000 cars last month, according to data from Spain's auto industry group Anfac. The rise has raised hopes that the worst may be over for a western European auto market enduring its weakest year in two decades. But Anfac cited the impact of government subsidies as well as other factors for last month's rise, including a statistical effect after a sharp drop in sales in September 2012, when the centre-right government raised its main VAT rate by 3 percentage points to 21 percent.

A week of mixed fortunes at Aloha Superbowl It has been a busy time at Aloha Superbowl. On Thursday 17th October the club welcomed a team from Plympton Bowling Club, Plymouth, for a friendly match. Plympton have spent a very enjoyable bowling holiday visiting clubs along the coast and we were happy to have them with us for the day. Superbowl came out on top at the end of a very enjoyable afternoon. The club will look forward to their next visit.

Friday 18th October saw Superbowl's 1st and 2nd teams have mixed fortunes. The 1st team welcomed Santa Maria Bowling Club and at the end of a hard fought match came out winners 78-58. It was a

different story at Benavista where the 2nd team were beaten 93-50.

On Sunday 50 bowlers and social members of the club enjoyed a fabulous roast lunch in the restaurant, followed by an impromptu sing along! Thanks to Jamie and his

staff for a great afternoon. To find out when the next Sunday lunch will be or for information on bowling, including free lessons for beginners every Tuesday, please contact the club on 952817713. Report by Janet Holden

Sepp Blatter: Fifa president could be succeeded by Jeffrey Webb Fifa president Sepp Blatter has indicated he could be replaced "in the near future" as the head of football's world governing body by Jeffrey Webb.

Webb, a Fifa vicepresident, is leader of the

confederation for North, Central America and the Caribbean (Concacaf). The comments, to a football conference in the Caribbean, are another hint that Blatter does not want Uefa president Michel Platini to succeed him.

Blatter, 77, has led the Zurich-based governing body since 1998.

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips A number of people have asked me how do you play Stud, well here are the basic rules to get you started.

Before the start of the Texas Hold'em boom over 10 years ago, Stud had always been the most popular poker variation in the United States. The game is played with two to eight players. Probably the biggest difference between 7 Card Stud and Texas Hold'em is that 7 Card Stud is a non-flop game. Each player gets dealt a total of seven cards, of which three are dealt face down and four are dealt face up. From these seven cards the player has to choose his best five-card combination. The hand rankings are identical to those in Hold'em; a Royal Flush is the best possible hand and the worst hand is the high card hand (no pair). Every player starts off with getting dealt three cards; two cards face down and one card face up. The two face-down cards are

called the 'hole cards' and the face-up card is called the 'door card'. Based on these three cards you decide whether or not you want to continue with the hand. Like in any poker variation, hand selection is extremely important in 7 Card Stud.

Antes, bring-in and betting

Every player pays an ante before getting dealt any cards. In our example we are playing a 1€/2€ Stud game with a 0.10€ ante and a 0.50€ bring-in.

The three cards are dealt and the player with the lowest door card is forced to pay the bring-in of 0.50€. This player can also choose to bet 1€, which is called 'to complete'. The betting continues clockwise around the table, with players having the option to call, raise or fold. Once the betting is complete, every player left in the hand is dealt a fourth cards (4th

street). Now, and in all rounds still to come, the player with the highest upcards is the one who starts the betting. The minimum bets for the remainder of the hand are: 4th street: 1€ 5th, 6th, 7th street (the river) : 2€

Hand Selection

Just like in any other poker variation, it is important to carefully choose your starting hands and the blinds are normally fixed or pot limited. It is not a no limit game so if you’re bluffing you have to make the story add up. If you have any questions or wish to discuss any poker related subjects email: wayne@bolsa-fiesta.com,

Manchester United defender Ferdinand, who quit international football in May after winning the last of his 81 caps in June 2011, is the first non-white member of the 10-person panel.

Rugby League

World Cup: England stunned by Italy England suffered a shock 1514 defeat by Italy only one week before the start of the Rugby League World Cup. Josh Mantellato kicked a drop-goal 90 seconds from time to give Italy – at 13 the second-lowest ranked team in the World Cup – victory in Salford. England, ranked third in the world, trailed 12-4 at one stage in the first half before two Sam Tomkins’ tries put the home side ahead. But a Ray Nasso penalty and Mantellato's drop settled it. England meet Australia in the World Cup's opening match in Cardiff on 26th October with Carlo Napolitano's Italy facing Iestyn Harris' Wales at the same venue later that day.
