Security forces on Tuesday continued searching the Nairobi shopping centre attacked by suspected al-Shabab militants, as they sought for a fourth day to secure the site. An explosion and bursts of gunfire were heard coming from the Westgate complex on Tuesday morning, but authorities said the operation was nearing its end. At least 62 people have been killed and more than 190 injured. At least 18 foreigners are among the dead, including six Britons, as well as citizens from France, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, Peru, India, Ghana, South Africa and China. Sadly, the rellies went back to the UK for a couple of days and, as you are reading this on Wednesday, will be winging their way back to Australia via a couple of days in Singapore. It is always a risk to go on holiday with friends or family and can turn into an utter pain rather than what should be a good time. Luckily, Stephen and Melinda are great company and we laughed a lot while they were here which was lovely. We spent from last Thursday until Sunday in Barcelona and, no, we weren’t mugged or pickpocketed. The hotel, which was quite good was in what you would describe as appearing to be in a bit of a dodgy area (they didn’t tell you that on their website as I was booking it!) with quite a lot of graffiti on pull-down shutters etc and it appeared to be the last area in the city that was up for redevelopment although there were signs of regeneration if you looked around. If you had a few bob stashed away somewhere, it would probably be the right place

and the right time to pick up a bit of property for a song before it skyrockets. We found two really good restaurants. One was recommended by a work colleague of Melinda who comes from Barcelona but works in Australia and the other was near the hotel. Both were surprising finds – you’d easily walk past them if you didn’t know what they were. Also, we were there for the start of their big festival so saw the people making human towers on Sunday before we left for our six- hour trip home on the AVE train. Back to reality now!

Official sources said six of the attackers have been killed and 10 people have been arrested in connection with the attack. Between 12 and 15 militants stormed the Westgate centre on Saturday, throwing grenades and firing on shoppers and staff.

President Barack Obama called the attack a "terrible outrage" and said the US was providing all the co-operation it could to Kenya.

Thousands of Kenyans have been responding to appeals for blood donations.

WEATHER WEATHER

Al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaeda, has repeatedly threatened attacks on Kenyan soil if Nairobi did not pull its troops out of Somalia. There are about 4,000 Kenyan troops in the south of Somalia as part of an African Union force supporting Somali government forces.

Al-Shabab is fighting to create an Islamic state in Somalia. Despite being pushed out of key cities in the past two years, it remains in control of smaller towns and large swathes of the countryside.

The National Commission for the Rationalisation of Working Hours has called for far-reaching reforms to working hours and practices to help Spain break out of the recession and reduce the unemployment rate.

by setting time limits for them, and to practise and demand punctuality." The report goes on: "In these difficult and critical times, Spain urgently needs more humane working hours, which would raise productivity, lower absenteeism and accidents, as well as reducing dropout rates from school."

Long lunch breaks were necessary when working became unbearable in midday temperatures of 40C or more but are no longer needed now that offices, shops and factories have air conditioning. Spaniards work until 9 pm and put in more hours than German workers but they waste more time and produce far less. Given their fondness for socialising until the early hours, they also have on average one hour less sleep per night. The commission's report states: "We need more flexible working hours, to cut our lunch breaks, to streamline business meetings

The report also recommends ditching the use of Central European Time – Madrid is further west than Plymouth – which means daylight and working hours are out of synch. Spain adopted Berlin time in 1942, when it was sympathetic to Nazi Germany. The Commission maintains that a shorter and better timed working day would improve the quality of life, raise the country's low birth rates and reduce the rate of marriage breakdown.

Another company rejects Tourist sector heading Catalan independence for “historic” year

The president of the BCN World macro tourism resort project in Barcelona, Xavier Adserà, said during a presentation at the Esade business school last week that membership of the European Union is essential for “questions of financial and legal security" adding that uncertainty about Catalonia's remaining part of Spain “adds difficulty to any project”.

BCN World was unveiled last year by savings bank La Caixa, businessman Enrique Bañuelos and the Catalonia regional government, in the wake

of the announcement by casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson that his Eurovegas project would be going to Madrid. The planned resort, which has an estimated €900 million investment, would cover 900 hectares of land and create 17,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The complex will feature leisure installations, stores, casinos and other

businesses. Most of the investment will come from Asia and the resort could be catering to “100 million rich Chinese” who will travel abroad in 2020. “They do not want to go to the beach or play golf. For them, leisure is gambling, culture and shopping,” said Adserà. BCN World is the latest of a series of companies that have expressed doubts about doing business in an independent Catalonia which would not be part of the EU.

According to the Industry, Energy and Tourism Ministry’s latest FRONTUR survey, the number of foreign visitors in the month of August climbed 7.1 per cent to 8.3 million, buoyed by a surge in Russian and Scandinavian visitors. As a result, the number of overnight stays in hotels also hit a record 42 million, an increase of 3.5 percent from August last year. In the first eight months of this year, 42.3 million foreigners visited Spain, an increase of 4.5 per cent over the same period a year earlier. The biggest rise was in the number of Russian

Baby killed in airport accident MP ejected for A five-month-old boy died at Alicante-Elche airport last week after becoming trapped in a luggage conveyor carousel.

The child's mother, a US national, had taken a late flight from London to Alicante, airport sources said. She placed the child inside a baby carrier on a stationary belt for heavy baggage, which is reported to have been activated by the weight.

The police investigating the baby's death said CCTV footage "seemed to show it had been an accident".

Medical workers tried to save the baby's life but he was declared dead at the scene.

The tragedy is believed to have occurred at the Alicante-Elche airport on the Costa Blanca.

visitors, up 30.1 per cent over the same period last year.

The rise in overnight stays was aided by the containment of hotel prices, which fell across the country, with the exception of the Balearic and Canary Islands and the Basque Country. For the country as a whole, the average rise in prices was 0.7 per cent. Providing advanced figures, Industry, Energy and Tourism Minister José Manuel Soria said on Monday that foreign tourists spent over €40.4 billion in the first eight months of the year, an increase of 7 per cent.

The minister said the performance of the tourist industry in August alone was “historic” with spending by foreign visitors up 12 per cent, to €8.2 billion. The minister said if the favourable forecasts for the rest of the 2013 materialize, “this will probably be a record year for the tourist sector.”

Prison terms speaking English for web pirates

During a debate on an anticorruption bill in the Upper House last week, MP Alfred Bosch was expelled from the chamber for speaking English amid a simmering dispute over Catalan independence. He criticised a decree to introduce education in Spanish and English as well as Catalan in the Balearic Islands, which drew a warning from speaker Cecilia Villalobos for straying from the topic.

Mr Bosch then switched from Spanish to English to reply: "The Kingdom of Spain has some trouble with freedom. Freedom of speech is corrupted (sic), freedom of thought is corrupted." Ms Villalobos complimented Mr Bosch

on his English but ordered him to leave the chamber. "Madame Speaker, why children and not MPs?" Mr Bosch said – in Spanish again – as he walked out.

Debates in the national parliament must be conducted in Castilian, as the country's majority language is formally known.

Spain's other official languages – Catalan, Basque and Galician – can only be used regional assemblies. Mr Bosch, a prize-winning novelist in Catalan, said the trilingual decree in the Balearics watered down efforts to teach Catalan there.

The government plans to introduce prison sentences for the owners or administrators of websites that provide links to copyrighted material on external pages, infringing intellectual property laws.

Current legislation only provides for sentences of up to four years for people who "reproduce, plagiarise, distribute or pass on" copyrighted material without the consent of the author.

Sites that simply provide links to secondparty providers of content have previously been immune from prosecution. The reform of the penal code will include jail terms of between six months and six years for the offence, as well as allowing for the removal of protected material and the closure of websites providing it. The proposal, drafted by the Justice Ministry,

has led to heated debate between the Interior Ministry – under pressure from internet operators seeking a softer law – and the Culture Ministry, which is besieged by artists seeking to stem the loss of income. The United States had placed Spain on its internet piracy blacklist in 2008 because of the high number of illegal downloads being made.

However, it removed Spain last year when current government introduced tougher legislation which allowed for the closure of websites offering copyrighted content.

Business as usual for King before operation King Juan Carlos received the credentials of 16 ambassadors on Tuesday morning in order not to leave the United States, the Lebanon, Macedonia, New Zealand, Portugal, Gambia, Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Iraq, Switzerland, Poland, Luxemburg, Vietnam, Finland, Qatar and Malta without diplomatic representation while he recovers from his fourth hip operation. He told journalists: "After the audiences, once again I'm off to the workshop. You can come and see me as mechanics if you want." The King entered the Hospital Universitario Quirón, in Madrid, later on Tuesday to undergo another operation to replace his artificial hip, which has become infected. At a special news conference at the King’s residence, physicians explained the procedure. “The treatment for an infected prosthesis has

always been surgery and consists of replacing the prosthesis,” said Dr Miguel Cabanela, a Spanish hip-replacement specialist who works at the Mayo Clinic in the United States who headed the medical team that operated on the King. Cabanela stressed that infections from this type of artificial hip were “normal”.

Royal Household spokesman Rafael Spottorno said recovery will take between eight weeks and six months, which will require the monarch to “adapt” to a new agenda. He added that he doubted whether the King will be able to attend the October 12th military parade or the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Panama, which is also next month. The King's latest operation has been surrounded by controversy. The leader of the

Communist-dominated United Left, Cayo Lara, urged the King to set a good example and have the operation in a public hospital. However, that would mean jumping to the head of waiting lists of up to six months, which would not go down well with the public. It has also been pointed out that the King and his family, who do not pay Social Security, are probably not eligible for treatment at public hospitals. The Royal Household has also had to deny rumours that the King was planning to abdicate. His health, and speculation he would abdicate, were top Twitter topics after it was announced that the King was to have his eighth operation since 2010. “The King has not thought of abdicating at any time,” Spottorno told journalists at a news conference called to give details of the operation.

The 75-year-old king, who uses a walking stick, has appeared visibly more frail in recent months and stumbled at a military ceremony last week. Both of his hips have been replaced and in March he had an operation on a spinal disc hernia. Juan Carlos is widely respected for his role in steering Spain to democracy after the death of long-time dictator General Francisco Franco in 1975, but a series of scandals in recent years have tarnished his image, including a corruption probe in which a judge is investigating his youngest daughter Cristina’s tax affairs. The first of the king’s hip replacement operations last year followed a fall during an elephanthunting holiday in Botswana, and sympathy for his injury was overshadowed by widespread anger that he made the trip while Spaniards were suffering in a recession.

Jailed business chief hid €88 million

The police have identified property worth an estimated €87.9 million owned by businessman gerardo díaz-Ferrán, who had declared himself bankrupt in order to avoid paying creditors. The former head of the Spanish confederation of Business Organizations (cEOE), the country's largest employer group, is currently in jail facing charges of fraud and money-laundering. a madrid commercial court has already found díaz-Ferrán guilty of deliberately driving the Viajes marsans travel business into the ground by stripping it of its assets, leaving it with debts of more than €400 million. The court barred him from managing the assets of third parties, or representing them for 15 years and made him personally liable to repay his creditors. The collapse of the travel group left 4,700 employees with their wages unpaid, along with some 10,000 creditors owed.

World News Venezuelan military arrested over drugs

Three members of Venezuela's National Guard have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the smuggling of a massive haul of cocaine on an Air France flight from Caracas to Paris.

French border police found 1.3 tonnes of cocaine in 30 suitcases on an Air France flight which arrived at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris on September 11th, but news of the seizure was only made public on Saturday.

The seizure was one of the biggest ever to be made on French territory. On Sunday, Venezuelan officials launched an

investigation into how the drugs got on board the flight. Venezuelan Interior Minister Miguel Rodriguez said he expected more arrests would be made over the coming days.

Six people have already been arrested in France on suspicion of belonging to an international drugs smuggling ring. Three of them are reportedly from Britain, while the other

three are from Italy.

French Interior Minister Manuel Valls said the arrests were the result of intelligence sharing between French police and their European colleagues. However, sources in Caracas have said former Finance Minister Rafael Isea is believed to be cooperating with the US's Drug Enforcement Administration

and may have tipped it off about the shipment.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Venezuela does not produce sizeable quantities of cocaine, but it has become a transit country for cocaine from Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia, which is shipped to the United States and Europe.

Senior police resign Angry protests after neo-Nazi killing after church attack

Two senior Greek police officials have resigned over last week's killing of an anti-fascist activist by a member of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party.

The authorities said they quit for "personal reasons", but it is thought they are blamed for failing to search a Golden Dawn office last week in which weapons were found. In addition, seven other police officers were suspended for alleged links to the party. There have long been claims of widespread police support for the neo-Nazis, including figures showing

that in some areas one in two police officers voted for them in last year's election. But it has taken the killing of Mr Fyssas, an anti-racism rapper who went by the stage name Killah P, by the Golden Dawn member to shake the authorities into action.

The crime stunned Greece, and for the first time in months the party's support dropped significantly in the latest opinion polls. The party came from nowhere to win nearly 7% of the vote in 2012 general elections and took its place in parliament.

Protests and vigils have taken place across Pakistan as Christians demand better protection after suicide blasts killed at least 80 people at a church. Sunday's double suicide bombing is thought to be Pakistan's deadliest attack against Christians. Two militant groups – Jandullah and the Junood ul-Hifsa, both with past links to the Pakistani Taliban – said they had ordered the double bombing in retaliation for US drone strikes in Pakistan's tribal north-west. The Pakistani Taliban condemned the attack, but the group frequently denies

responsibility for attacks which take a heavy civilian toll. Political and religious leaders condemned the attack, but angry crowds took to the streets, denouncing the state's failure to protect minorities. There have been outbreaks of communal violence in areas where Muslims and Christians co-exist. In March, Muslims in Lahore torched dozens of Christian homes in response to an allegation of blasphemy. But this latest attack is being described as the first assault of its kind on Christians in recent memory.

Army conscription to stay

Swiss voters have decided to keep the country's compulsory military service in the latest national referendum on the topic. the Swiss Army is regarded as costly and many young men complain that their time is wasted, but older voters say obligatory duty in the armed forces remains the best way to defend the neutral country. the vote on conscription was the third in Switzerland on the matter in almost quarter of a century. Male Swiss citizens aged between 18 and 34 begin service with weeks of basic training. they then keep their uniforms and weapons at home to be ready for tours of duty. Women can serve voluntarily. Conscientious objectors have the option of undertaking nonmilitary service, while men who do not serve pay a special tax of 4% of their salary. UnitED StAtES

Honesty pays off for homeless man

Donations of more than $110,000 have poured in from across the US for a Boston homeless man who returned a lost bag with $42,000 in it. Glen James alerted police after he found the backpack containing cash and traveller's cheques last weekend, and the bag's owner was then tracked down. A complete stranger later started an online fund for Mr James. Ethan Whittington said he was so overwhelmed by Mr James' honesty that he decided to start the fund on a crowdfunding website for Mr James which "caught on like wildfire". Meanwhile, Mr James, a former Boston courthouse employee, said that he would not have kept "even a penny" of the money he had found in the backpack – even if he were desperate.

Merkel faces tough coalition talks Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party got its best result since 1994 in last Sunday's election – 41.5% – just short of a clear majority and she now has to decide who to team up with to form a new German coalition. Her former liberal partners, the Free Democrats (FDP), failed to get any seats – the first time it has suffered such a blow in Germany's post-war history.

In theory the three leftist parties – the SPD, Greens and Left – would have enough seats together for a majority. However both the former two have ruled out an alliance with the Left Party (Die Linke), regarding it as too radical. A coalition with the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) is seen as most likely – but only

after hard bargaining. The SPD came second, with just under 25.7%.

In 2005-2009 they were in a "grand" coalition with Chancellor Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian allies, the CSU – but observers say that the experience has made them wary about working with the CDU/CSU again. The SPD suffered a big drop in its electoral support in 2009. That result was widely seen as punishment for having teamed up with Mrs Merkel and been made to look very much the junior partner.

The SPD has criticised Mrs Merkel's economic austerity drive, saying Germany should show more solidarity with struggling EU partners in

US court to decide if Muslim Brotherhood horses are 'vicious' 'activities' banned The Cairo Court for Urgent Matters has banned "all activities" by the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Connecticut State Supreme Court is to hear a case that could result in horses being classified as a "vicious" species.

The legal action began in 2006 after a boy tried to pet a horse called Scuppy at Glendale Farms in Milford. The animal reportedly bit the child on his right cheek, inflicting a serious injury. The boy's father, Anthony Vendrella, sued the farm's owners, but lost in 2010 at a New Haven court. That court ruled there was no evidence the farm's owner knew of any previous

incidents of aggression involving Scuppy. But a Connecticut Appellate Court later overturned this ruling, finding that testimony suggested Scuppy's species was "vicious" and that the boy's injury had been foreseeable.

If upheld by the state's supreme court, the ruling would be the first in the nation to classify horses as a vicious species. Horse farmers say that could make it difficult to pair horses with children, and damage a $221 million a year industry.

Monday's ruling bans the Brotherhood itself, the NGO it created in March, as well as "any institution derived from or belonging to the Brotherhood" or "receiving financial support from it". It is not clear if it applies to the charities and social services linked to the Brotherhood, including schools and hospitals. A leading Brotherhood member, Ibrahim Mounir, described the ruling as a "totalitarian decision" but insisted the group would not disappear.

The court did not reveal the grounds for the ruling, but it was prompted by a lawsuit filed by the leftist National Progressive

Unionist Party, also known as Tagammu, which accused the Brotherhood of being "terrorist" and "exploiting religion in political slogans". The court also ordered the interim government to seize the Brotherhood's funds and form a panel to administer its frozen assets until any appeal had been heard.

The military authorities have launched a crackdown on the group since ousting President Mohammed Morsi on July 3rd. Dozens of senior figures, including its general guide Mohammed Badie, have been detained on suspicion of inciting violence and murder.

Hundreds of people demanding Mr Morsi's reinstatement, most of them Brotherhood members, have also been killed in clashes with security forces, who portray the crackdown as a struggle against "terrorism".

Costa Concordia captain blames helmsman

The captain of the Costa Concordia has blamed his Indonesian helmsman for the accident which caused the ship to sink off the coast of Italy last year. Francesco Schettino told a court on Monday that the helmsman failed to obey orders to slow down and steered the ship onto rocks. The captain said there would have been no crash if the helmsman, who has already been convicted in a separate manslaughter trial, had heeded the order.

Mr Schettino claimed that if the helmsman had quickly executed the correct manoeuvre, the Concordia would have steered away from the jagged reef that sliced a 70m gash in the ship's hull. Investigators have said previously language problems between the captain and the helmsman might have played a role in crash. But one maritime expert told the trial, which is expected to last several weeks, that the helmsman's mistake and slow reaction were not crucial factors. "The helmsman

SALINA’S was

13 seconds late in executing the manoeuvre, but the crash would have happened anyway,'' Italian naval Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone said. At the time of the crash, the ship had deviated from its preestablished course because Mr Schettino wanted to impress passengers with a close-up view of the island. Mr Schettino, the sole defendant in the trial, is charged with manslaughter, causing the shipwreck and abandoning ship. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison. Last week the 290mlong vessel was raised upright in a major salvage operation off the coast of Giglio island. Thirty-two people died when the cruise ship capsized in January 2012. It is hoped that the bodies of two of the victims missing since the disaster will now be found.

Driving PC killed in hit-and-run centenarians PC Andrew Duncan, a 47year-old father of two was struck by a car in an apparent hit-and-run incident when he was trying to stop the vehicle while carrying out speed checks in Sutton, south London on Friday night. He died of his injuries on Sunday morning. Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe hailed PC A new check on the competency of drivers in the UK may be introduced after it was revealed that nearly 300 drivers are over the age of 100, the oldest being 107 years old. One lady of 91 said that she didn’t see why anyone who was still able to drive safely should have to give up their licence and that she would be “very grumpy” if she did. She said that, on occasion, she took taxis to get to places but she enjoyed driving, which she has been doing since just after the second World War while in her twenties, and didn’t see why, as long as she was safe, she couldn’t continue. There are currently 4 million licenced drivers over the age of 70. Poole in Dorset is one of

the places with more than its fair share of older drivers and the DVLA say that there is no evidence to suggest that they have more accidents than anyone else and, at the moment have no plans to start refusing to renew licences which have to be re-issued every three years including compulsory eye tests once a driver reaches 70, with around 15% of those applications being refused. Pensioners asked about how they would feel if they had to give up their licences almost universally said that it would take away their independence and they would seriously miss their cars and the lifestyles they are able to carry on with because of their licences.

Duncan as a "hardworking and courageous policeman" following his death, adding: “The night he was injured he was doing a job that he loved and we all had every right to expect he would return safely to his home and family – tragically that was not the case." Two men aged 19 and 20 were also arrested at that time and bailed until a date in October. A woman who was also arrested on Saturday evening on charges of

Ed Milliband promises help for small businesses and “hard working families” Some would say it was inevitable but Labour Leader Ed Milliband’s speech yesterday at the Labour Party conference was all about helping the poor and not the rich.

He said that Labour’s intentions were to help “hard working families and small businesses” with extra child care places at affordable prices for families and £800 million worth of tax breaks

for small businesses.

He said he will scrap the coalition’s planned corporation tax reduction from 21% to 20% and reverse the increase in rates for small businesses due in April 2015 to be held at 2014 rates for 2 years on premises with a rental value of £50,000 or less. Labour calculates the move will be worth an average £450 over two years to 1.5 million

businesses, including shops, pubs and hi-tech start-ups, and up to £2,000 for some firms. £225 a year may not sound like a lot per year but, when money is as tight as it is for many small businesses it can mean the difference between carrying on trading or folding. However, he is on a hiding to nothing over his announcement of plans to build in countryside areas in the hopes of easing the housing shortage although he did not reveal where these new houses may be.

Criticising the coalition Mr. Milliband said of the current government’s progress on the economy: “Too many of the jobs we're creating in this country are just too lowpaid, too many of the gains in our economy are just scooped up by a privileged few, including those with big bonuses, and too often you are left being charged over the odds. They used to say 'a rising tide lifts all boats'. Now the rising tide

just seems to lift the yachts."

Explaining his decision to target tax breaks on small firms, Mr Miliband said: "Most of the jobs of the future are going to be created in a large number of small businesses, not a small number of large businesses. And most of the new jobs that British people will be doing in 15 years' time will be in new companies. That's why we have to support our small businesses, the vibrant, dynamic businesses that will create wealth in Britain."

On what Labour will face if they win the next General Election, he said: "We won't be able to win the race to the top by spending money we don't have. You know and I know that the next Labour government will face tough times, and there's no point in pretending otherwise. We have to deal with the deficit and that means we need to win the race to the top in a different way, based on the jobs we create, the businesses we support, the talents we nurture, the wages we earn and the vested interests we take on."

The Labour conference took place in Brighton this year from September 22nd until today, September 25th.

Expats moving back to Britain would be £900 better off buying a house rather than renting it according to recent research by a mortgage lender, but the gap has narrowed because of an increase in house prices. Back in 2008 renting made more financial

sense, but the value of houses fell by a third during the downturn meaning buying is now more attractive than renting. Those who live in London and Northern Ireland have most to gain by buying.

A survey for British consumer group Which? has indicated that eight out of ten shoppers are concerned about the price of food in the UK. Food prices have risen more than general

inflation and a greater proportion of available income is being spent on food. A third of those polled said they were struggling to feed themselves.

Malaya sentence due in October Three years after the beginning of the trial, the court in Malaga has announced a date for the sentencing in the Malaya case – October 4th.

It has taken the court a year to draft the sentence which consists of 4,000 pages for the 96 people accused in the case –

including former mayor Julian Munoz and Juan Antonio Roca, the Marbella council's Head of Urban Planning.

The council has asked them to regularise their situation and pay the corresponding tax. Councillor Manuel Navarro said: "Not one of them has the licence, including the Alhaurin el Grande golf club, part of which is in our

municipality."

He added: "They are all old and when they were built it was not necessary to have the licence." He said restaurants and other businesses at the clubs possessed the opening licence but the golf

courses themselves didn't.

All businesses have been required to obtain an opening licence since 1999. Navarro said it could cost the golf clubs as much as €10,000 to obtain the licences.

Gibraltar accuses Spain of crudely hiding reality The Gibraltar Government last week accused Spain of a “crude, last minute” attempt to “disguise and conceal” its normal customs checks at the border, ahead of a visit by the European Commission on September 25th.

The accusation came after the news that Spanish authorities had cleared and cordoned off an area next to the customs post to search cars leaving Gibraltar. Previously, the Guardia Civil officers simply stopped vehicles in the red and green channels while they carried out their checks, causing tailbacks into Gibraltar of up to seven hours outbound and three hours inbound.

However, by moving vehicles to one side, the flow of traffic is no longer impeded by the checks.

And that is exactly what the six experts on EU customs controls and border matters have come to inspect, as set out in the EC's announcement, which states: "Concerns have been raised by citizens, members of the European Parliament and the Government of Gibraltar regarding border checks, in particular alleged excessive waiting times. The Spanish authorities have raised concerns regarding an increase in tobacco smuggling from Gibraltar to Spain. In order to clarify this situation, the Commission is sending a

technical fact-finding mission to assess the situation on both sides of the border. The Spanish

and British authorities have cooperated with the Commission in the organisation of the visit."

The position of governor is largely ceremonial as Gibraltar has its own government, led by Fabian Picardo, the chief minister, who played a very vocal role during the recent flare-up of tensions with

Spain. Sir James, who is married with two children, was the Ministry of Defence director of Nato policy and served as Britain’s liaison officer to the Pentagon at the time of the September 11th terror attacks. “I am delighted and honoured to be going to Gibraltar, especially given its historical connections with the Royal Marines,” he said. “I hope that my many years of military experience combined now with three years of

Anything goes

T

he Left is really grasping at straws these days. They milked the last drop out of the scandal involving former Partido Popular treasurer Luis Barcenas and are still making half-hearted attempts to use it to try to bring down Mariano Rajoy. But as the days go by, it's becoming increasingly obvious that the ERE scandal involving the Junta de Andalucia is going to make the Barcenas affair look like child's play.

A

n opportunity to knock the government arose on September 11th, Catalonia's national or Diada day, when some members of an extreme right group invaded a Catalan cultural office in Madrid to protest the independence issue. A few people were jostled and some Catalan flags were torn or trodden on but no blood flowed and the police turned up quite quickly to arrest the protesters. The Socialists and the Communist-dominated United Left (Izquierda Unida, IU) immediately began to ask questions in Parliament. What was the government doing to eradicate these extreme right-wing groups, they demanded. Not enough was the answer to their own question.

H

owever, that one fizzled out after a couple of newspapers pointed out that the police have identified 46 extreme rightwing groups active in Spain, as well as 42 extreme left-wing groups and 118 Anarchist groups (usually very extreme left wing). Let's say they all have 100 members, so we have 4,600 extreme right-wing people and at least 16,000 on the extreme left – or four times as many. Security forces say the extreme right-wing groups tend to be small, often with less than 100 members, while the extreme left groups attract young hotheads – of whom there are several hundreds of thousands in Spain, as we know from the demonstrations that have turned

M

eanwhile, not a word about the University of Zaragoza's cancellation of a ceremony scheduled to take place this Monday, with the attendance of the Education Minister and Crown Prince Felipe, which was cancelled because of fears that violent left-wingers would disrupt it.

T

hen the Socialists and the United Left were offered another straw in the form of the King's hip operation. United Left Commissar Cayo Lara immediately started demanding that the King choose a public hospital for the operation, and the Socialists soon took up the cry. (When will the Socialists learn that following the Communists like sheep won't get them anywhere?)

H

owever, the Royal Family do not pay Social Security so are not eligible to use the public health service. If the King had opted for a public hospital, he would have had to jump queues of up to six months for hip operations – one of the most common for people over a certain age – and imagine the feathers that would have been ruffled, with screams of "privilege" lifted to the heavens.

S

o the King – as a journalist pointed out on the telly the other night – opted to exercise his right to choose, and chose a private hospital, as he usually does. God knows he can afford it.

M

eanwhile, down here in Andalucia, not one of the judges in the six courts in Seville wants to investigate the Socialist trade union, the UGT, which has been accused of presenting false invoices to the Junta de Andalucia to pay for lunches, dinners at the Seville April Feria, posters for protest marches, bonuses and a variety of other expenses. Meanwhile, the union had more than €6 million invested in fixed term deposits.

I

rest my case – for the moment – but I have decided to unmask extreme left – or right – lies at every opportunity that presents itself.

A

ll indications seem to point to a new role for Spain’s heir apparent Prince Felipe. While his father, King Juan Carlos underwent surgery again on Tuesday for an infected artificial hip, the Partido Popular and the Socialists agreed on their own separate terms that it was time to begin looking at establishing legal duties for the prince. As it is now, Prince Felipe has no delegated roles or power to sign treaties or memorandums of understanding. He has represented his father on occasion at many events but there are certain international conferences, such as the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Panama, at which the prince cannot legally replace his father.

T

he PP and the Socialists want legal framework so that the prince will have an official role under the Constitution, seeing that King Juan Carlos is once again having to undergo hip surgery – his fifth visit to the operating room in 18 months. But while the PP is calling for “prudence” in changing the law, the Socialists came out and proposed a statute to the Royal Household that would define the prince’s duties. This is a sensitive issue since King Juan Carlos has stated that he has no intention of abdicating. The two political parties are treading in delicate waters where any move could resurrect old memories of when Francisco Franco passed over the king’s father, Don Juan, in favour of the son to restore the monarchy. This move sparked a family feud for a time between Juan Carlos and Don Juan, who eventually accepted that he would never assume the throne.

N

o one knows where the monarchy is going. I suspect that the king’s refusal to give up the throne is based on his strong commitment to the Spanish people rather than personal drive. Stepping down from the throne at this time when Spaniards are going through

their worst economic period since democracy was restored would be seen as unfaithfulness by many. The king no doubt wants to ride out this awful period with the rest of the nation and do what he can to ensure that recovery is consolidated.

T

The cost of privatisation

he privatisation effort by the Madrid regional government to outsource medical services at several regional hospitals has become a big headache for the PP government. A host of lawsuits filed in court by health workers' unions and other opposition groups has legally blocked the region from carrying through with its plans for now.

A

t the same time, the bids for the hospitals have been put on hold. Among their gripes, workers complained that the quality of health care will drop if the services are left in private hands. One private company from the United States, which has been awarded one bid, has tried to counter concerns that it is in it for the money. The six centres – in Vallecas, San Sebastián de los Reyes, Parla, Coslada, Arganda del Rey and Aranjuez – are already semiprivatised and received an annual raise from the regional government.

B

ut now that a Madrid regional High Court judge has discovered irregularities in some of the bids, he has blocked the plans until a court can decide whether the privatisation is legal. Nevertheless, the PP government seems to believe that its privatisation efforts will eventually come to nothing. It has already begun setting aside money – €53 million to be exact – to cover legal costs involved if the companies who were awarded the bids in the first place decide to sue the regional government.

P

rivatisation of a health system that is state funded is always a tricky business. The regional government said that by outsourcing services, such as blood tests and other examinations, the government will save money. But at this point, it could stand to lose a lot more if the bid winners decide to take the regional government for all they can get.

Richard Wood who was born in London in 1950. From early childhood he

showed an unusual flair for painting and drawing and at school excelled at all art subjects. After leaving school he commenced training as a textile designer. In 1974 a chance meeting with John Miller (1931-2002), a well-established and internationally known artist, encouraged him to take up painting professionally and since 1976 he has worked as a full-time professional artist, initially, from his studio in Lancashire, but now from his studio near the picturesque village of Mijas in Southern Spain. The paintings are representational in a

traditional classic style produced in both oil and watercolours. The landscape and architectural subjects are confidently presented with precision and subtle brush work, in true colours. All the paintings draw the viewer’s eye to details which capture those magic moments of light and shade, so overlooked by those with less observational skills and perception. Richard's success has enabled him to travel extensively in Spain, Italy, Egypt, China, Thailand, Cambodia, USA and Australia, from where he has created collections of work depicting his

experience at all is not a barrier to volunteering.

Age Concern provides a wide range of services to older people including providing a ‘listening ear’, helping people to go shopping, providing information and advice, accompanying people to the doctors etc.

It is very rewarding work and much appreciated by our clients, so if you are interested and have a few hours to spare each week please call Eileen on 608 458 555.

This weekend on both Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th there will a re-enactment in full costume depicting scenes of the 19th century struggle between the citizens of Mijas and the occupying troops of the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

The resulting occupation of large parts of Spain saw mixed nationality troops, often conscripted Poles, in the service of the French, being garrisoned locally in Mijas, Fuengirola and Alhaurin el Grande.

Ploughman’s Help needed Urgent for charity The 12 Cudeca Charity Shops are managed by teams of volunteers and are located in the main towns throughout the province of Málaga. They are the major source of funding for the Hospice and they are always looking for people who want to help as volunteers.

After the service on Sunday, members and friends of the Church of Scotland enjoyed a Ploughman's Lunch in Lux Mundi Ecumenical Centre. The funds raised has enabled them to send 250 Euros to the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza which is the Presbytery of Europe's Mission Project for this year. The hospital is open to all, irrespective of their faith. Among others, it treats the poor without charge and those caught

and injured in the crossfire. The staff are totally dedicated and are of both the Muslim and Christian faith.

The Church of Scotland congregation meets every Sunday at 10.30 am in the Lux Mundi Ecumenical Centre, Calle Nueva, Fuengirola. Its members are not only Scottish, but Irish, English, German and from other countries too. All are very welcome. For more information phone John and Eileen on 952 455 213.

Cudeca have started a Volunteer Recruitment Campaign for their Marbella Charity Shop, located at Avenida del Mar (behind the Parque de la Alameda).

They are looking for people who have a free afternoon each week to extend their opening hours to include the afternoons, as they already have volunteers to cover the mornings. They are asking them to give only 4 hours per week.

The volunteers receive and sort the items for sale in general, but specifically they also price and sell items, receive and classify donations, decorate the shop and, of course, inform the public about Cudeca´s work. The longer the shop is open, the more money can be raised to help patients and families. As you know, all Cudeca’s care is given free of charge to both patients and their families. For those interested in helping, please contact their Volunteer Department to show their interest and receive more information. You can contact Cudeca by email voluntariado@cudeca.org or telephone them on 952 56 49 10.

Trip 2

Further to the report about the Marrakech trip on page 14, there is also a Christmas in Benidorm that has two rooms unexpectedly available due to a bereavement which would not normally be available now. From December 23rd to the 28th there is a 5 nights /6 days trip that includes two Gala Dinners with all wine, two excursions, full board and entertainment! For more information about these trips and to book, call Jo or Derek on 696 430 160.

Song for Marion stars Terence Stamp as Arthur, a grumpy pensioner who can't understand why his wife Marion (Vanessa Redgrave) would want to embarrass herself singing silly songs with her unconventional local choir.

It is time to plan for the future and focus on making alliances with other like minded people. New relationships could occur as by the weekend you are in your party and social mood, others loving to be around you because you make them feel so good. Energy levels are high and you will be attracting all sorts of unusual opportunities. You may be a bit impatient with those who just can’t keep up with your speed. Time is of the essence, well that is what you instinctively feel, you wish to see movement and you will do all you can to make sure everything is in place. It could be, however, that you have more time than you think and it is others that are applying the pressure. Put in that essential administration and this will both reduce nervous tension and save time in the long run. Let others see you at your best this week, it will be obvious who really stands by your side and who is there just for the ride. Quick progress could occur if you apply a cynical approach, although this is not always healthy, sometimes this viewpoint is needed to turn situations around. Some investigative work is likely this week and time spent researching will allow you to form a part of the bigger picture. Check the details and the fine print as this could be an extremely financially creative week and you may wish to benefit fully from this. You have now learnt not to let the good times blind you from the reality and cycles of life. Family and close friends play an important part in the plan right now and can help to keep your feet on the ground. Slow down and make sure you get the facts right as scattered negativity may exist around you and it is up to you to make sure the focus is kept. Your gut instincts will help when you are ready to take monetary chances. The hardest thing to do sometimes is to know when to walk away. Others always try and draw you back, but they only have that hold over you for a certain amount of time especially if in your heart you know it is the best for all concerned. This is not the time to take risks or gamble, your focus should be directed at making a difference and improve the lives of those you care about. Socially this is a popular time for you. Are you missing or ignoring something? Make sure that your imagination is not running away with you as elements of the past have a way of resurfacing right now, jolting reactions in you. New people are about to enter your life and your life is about to take some interesting twists and turns in the weeks ahead. You may need to move your investments or keep a close eye on your finances.

There are about to be some significant improvements on the home front. There is a lot of work and preparation still to do but you have now been given the green light. WEDNESDAY, September 25th 2013

There is a need to take extra care and safety in your daily life as you could be slightly accident prone, just take your time and think things through. Socially you are the belle of the ball, with your popularity reaching an all-time high, you take centre stage naturally and comfortably. You may have to hold another accountable for what they do particularly if they can’t see the wood for the trees and are denying or not facing certain issues.

Perhaps a close colleague or partner is focused on making changes on the domestic and property front. You may be a little hesitant on the repercussions of this move, nailing things down may be a top priority for you. So much of what is happening now will be similar to before; the main difference is you know so much more now. It is being given the opportunity to relive the past except you know exactly the right thing to do and say. Your excellent ability to interact with others now sets you apart from the crowd. Some may get rather jealous of the attention being directed at you, but that is really not for you to worry about. It is likely that you will have a calming effect on those around you and one thing will lead to another with events gliding you into a future you may not have expected to happen that quickly.

You could feel a bit out of your depth this week as a new area that you are moving into will take some time for you to find your feet. Others may be pressing you to join their team or at least engage with their plans and you will have to figure out if you are ready for yet more challenges. Pay close attention to the details and be the best at whatever you set out to do. Your mind is razor sharp and that makes it easier to find answers and solutions to difficult problems. You are well able at the moment to weather any stormy conditions you might encounter in your daily life, however, eventually you will have to face the realistic possibility that fame and fortune are knocking at your door. Your sign is in nearly perfect harmony with the natural world and features the power of the unexpected events. This is when the universe finds ways to ‘pay you back’ for past selfless service to others.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

A traditional West Country open pie that’s cheap, filling and quick to make. It’s best eaten warm rather than hot, and it’s really good cold so ideal for picnics or lunchboxes.

West Country Homity Pie Ingredients:

(Serves 4)

• 150g flour (plain or gluten-free) • 75ml milk (or cream, or plain • 75ml sunflower oil (or vegetable oil) yoghurt) plus a dash • 100g (3oz) cheese, grated • 50ml cold water • 1 egg • Salt and pepper • 250g cooked root vegetables (e.g. potatoes, parsnips, carrots) • 2 onions or leeks, chopped 150g • 2 unpeeled apples, chopped 200g • 3 rashers bacon, shredded 100g Directions Preheat the oven and use a metal pie tin to make sure you get a crisp pastry base. If you use wholemeal flour for your pastry add an extra dash of water. 1. Mix flour, oil, water and a pinch of salt into a dough. Cover and refrigerate for 15 minutes. Then sprinkle with flour and roll out ½ cm (¼in) thick, to line a lightly oiled 20cm x 4cm (8in x 1½ in) deep metal tin. 2. Meanwhile, add a dash of oil to a pan, add the bacon and onions, and stir regularly until onions start to brown. Add the apples and potatoes and cook a further 3-4 minutes, still stirring regularly.

3. Now add the milk, ¾ of the cheese, a little salt and pepper, stir for 1 minute then mix in the egg and put the mixture into the pastry case. 4. Top with the rest of the grated cheese and bake 20-25 minutes in a preheated oven 180°C/Gas 6/ 400ºF until golden brown. Vegetarian and vegan options Use mushrooms or smoked tofu instead of bacon. Or use a vegan soya-based cream cheese instead of egg and milk.

ink Apple's iPhone 5s ID fingerprint Geek Touch sensor has been hacked A hack has apparently been discovered that acts as a work around for Apple's new fingerprint sensor, Touch ID on the iPhone 5s A group of hackers, called the Chaos Computer Club, have discovered a potential hack for breaking through Apple's new fingerprint technology, Touch ID featured on the iPhone 5S. First reported by The Verge, the hackers claim to be able to foil the security technology feature by "using easy everyday means". A hacker, known by the name Starbug told The Verge, "In reality, Apple's sensor has just a higher resolution compared to the sensors so far, so we only needed to ramp up the resolution of our fake." According to the method, the hackers could just replicate a user’s fingerprint

with a highresolution photograph and produce a physical fake that could then be used on the iPhone 5S. Despite concerns it appears Apple's new iPhone 5S has sold out globally, in every colour and capacity, pushing expected shipping dates to October. Apple's recent iOS 7 update has also faced concerns after an apparent bug allows users to phone anyone, anywhere despite being on the lockscreen.

A couple of years ago Google introduced the 'Face Unlock' security feature to Android which was discovered to be easily fooled simply by a photograph of the user’s face. A YouTube video has already been uploaded demonstrating the iPhone’s hack.

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Sue,

I am considering having laser hair removal for my underarms and bikini line as I am so fed up of shaving, can you advise me and is it safe? Daphne, Fuengirola Dear Daphne,

Laser hair removal is an extremely effective way to remove hair. A huge proportion of the hair will be eliminated and only a tiny portion will grow back and often is very weak, blonde and will take longer and longer to

return. Hair has a three stage growth cycle – anagen, catogen and telogen. As with waxing and electrolysis, laser treatment is at its most efficient when the hair is in its anagen stage. Light transmitted by laser absorbs the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicles.

The best results are achieved with dark hair, it is slightly less effective on light hair so more sessions are needed. Underarm hair produces a very good result very quickly. It is important to avoid the sun for a few

days before and after each session.

It is coming into the perfect time of year for starting laser hair removal. There are several contra indications – people who have had cancer, during pregnancy and breast feeding, people with pacemakers or heart disease, and people with skin disorders. The once prohibitive cost of laser is now a thing of the past. For example a session for the bikini line and underarms is around €40 for both areas. Dear Sue,

Now that the summer is reaching it's end my skin feels clogged up and rough. Is there a facial you can do to help this? Maxine, Marbella Dear Maxine,

What your skin needs now is to be freed up from all the dead cells that it has accumulated during the summer. I can not recommend highly enough

"Guinot's" peeling facial "Beaute Nueve". Literally new beauty.

Think of it as similar to having split ends – we visit a hairdresser and have them cut off, leaving the hair looking and feeling stronger. The same goes for our skin. It has been exposed to sun protection creams, sun, the harsh water of pools with chemicals in etc. Firstly we apply a fruit acid for a few minutes which we then neutralise using an alkaline product. This has the effect of separating the dead cells from the healthy ones. After this we work with a special serum to help regenerate the skin and finish off with a mask to luminate the skin and help lessen any sun spots we have collected in the heat. Three sessions of this repeated weekly are required for optimum results. This is one of the most popular treatments I do as the results are fantastic. It doesn't claim to lift the skin but I can assure you it does. I take

really good care of my skin and after my first session last week had four compliments on my skin. Dear Calvin,

I recently have decided to grow my hair but it seems to be taking forever. How quickly does hair grow? Lesley, Alhaurin Golf Dear Lesley,

Hair on average grows half an inch a month, but remember this is just an average. Some people's hair grows faster, others slower. If you are in bad health or have a poor diet this can cause hair growth to slow down. Dear Calvin,

My fringe is really curly, so often after I have it cut it looks too short, what is happening? Shirley, Mijas

Dear Shirley,

Humid days means there is a lot of moisture in the air. Curly hair tends to be very porous, so the moisture on these days will transfer to your hair causing more curl. Using a deep conditioner will help make the hair less porous.

Also always use a styling product on the hair as this will help seal the cuticle and will prevent moisture from the air penetrating the hair which causes the curl. If you have any questions for Calvin or Sue, you can contact them on email – Calvin, calton1@hotmail.co.uk

Universal flu vaccine nearer Researchers at Imperial College London say they have made a big leap towards creating a vaccine that would protect against every form of flu. Influenza is able to change the proteins that protrude from the surface of the virus as readily as people change outfits.

However, the material on the inside is common to many strains of flu. Vaccine researchers believe targeting the core of the virus may be the way to develop a universal vaccine. A specific part of the immune system, called T-cells, is thought to be able to recognise proteins in the core. The team at Imperial used the 2009 swine flu pandemic to test the theory. Swine flu was a new virus from a mix of bird and pig flu. The team compared levels of one kind of T-cells

at the start of the pandemic with symptoms of flu in 342 staff and students at the university. They showed that the higher the levels of the Tcells a patient had, the milder their symptoms were.

The researchers then teased out the specific part of the immune system that offered some pandemic flu protection and established which part of the virus it was attacking. They said: "It's a blueprint for a vaccine. We know the exact subgroup of the immune system and we've identified the key fragments in the internal core of the virus. These should be included in a vaccine." They said the vaccine is about five years away: "We have the know-how, we know what needs to be in the vaccine and we can just get on and do it."

There was a time when if you bought something at auction you could take it home with you

Not so in the case of a Jane Austin ring … and now, thanks to generous donations, it is to remain in the UK The gold and turquoise ring was sold to American Idol star Kelly Clarkson last year but she was stopped from taking the ring home when the UK slapped a temporary export ban on it.

The ring will now stay in the UK after a successful fundraising campaign by Jane Austen’s House Museum in Chawton, Hampshire that raised the £157,740 needed to buy it back. Loyal Jane Austen fans from around the world donated to the fund that included a single pledge of £100,000 by a single anonymous donor. The museum, where the

author spent the last eight years of her life and wrote six of her novels, celebrates the bicentenial of the publication of Pride and Prejudice, one of Jane Austen’s best known works this year. The turquoise stone in the middle represents the birth month, December, that was the celebrated authors although it is not known whether the ring was a gift or if she bought it herself. Kelly Clarkson said that she was glad the museum had managed to raise the funds to keep the ring saying: "The ring is a beautiful national treasure and I am happy to

know that so many Jane Austen fans will get to see it at Jane Austen's House Museum." It is hoped that it will go on display from February next year – hopefully in time for Valentine’s Day.

Arts Council England chief executive Alan Davey said: "This ring is a truly important piece of history in understanding one of literature's greatest authors. It is fantastic that Jane Austen's House Museum has managed to raise the funds to keep this on display for people to enjoy and admire. Those who have donated should be thanked for their

enormous generosity."

Mary Guyatt, curator of the museum, said: "The museum has been stunned by the generosity and light-footedness of all those who have supported our campaign to meet the costs of acquiring Jane Austen's ring for our permanent collection. The Government's decision to decline an export licence reflects how rarely Austen's personal effects turn up in today's art market, and having missed out at auction in 2012 we are thrilled to have had this second chance to bring it home to Chawton."

The end of the road Breaking Bad wins for the VW Camper top Emmy award

There was a time when the most fashionable vehicle to be seen around in was a cool VW Camper. Now the vehicles are not going to be made anymore because the design doesn’t allow space for airbags and anti-locking brakes systems to be incorporated and the factory in Brazil – the last place on earth that makes them – will not, therefore, be making them by the end of this year. VW has said that they will not be changing their design. The little campers can be found all over the world in various shapes carrying anything from teenaged surfers to retired people popping out and about for a weekend’s jaunt. However, during its 63 years in production, over 10,000,000 of the vehicles

have been made so there will still be a fair few to buy second hand, although following this news the price to buy one will possibly rocket out of most people’s pocket. Damon Ristau, director of the documentary The Bus, which follows VW fanatics and their affections for the machine, said: "The van represents freedom. It has a magic and charm lacking in other vehicles. It's about the open road, about bringing smiles to people's faces when they see an old VW van rolling along." Production in Germany was halted in 1979 because the van no longer met European safety requirements, meaning its future was dependent on operations in South America.

Having been the owner of two of these vehicles, I can honestly say that the vans, especially the older splitscreens or bow fronted varieties that had stripey pop-tops to make them more roomy while stationary, were absolutely brilliant. We lived in London and used to travel all over the South of England, France, Belgium and Holland in ours in all manner of weathers from boiling hot (which wasn’t too comfortable without any possibility of airconditioning) to snow storms when you could use the little gas heater to make everything cosy. They will be sadly missed by everyone who has ever owned one of these iconic vehicles.

Charlie Elwood Have you noticed, or is it just me, how some cars these days are manufactured without indicators? I can only assume this must be correct due to the number of motorists who go around roundabouts, under- or over-take, turn left or right, stop, or park and all without signalling their intentions, leaving the rest of us to play a guessing game as to where they are going. Perhaps they don’t know, maybe they should ask their drivers?! A friend of mine reckons these indicatorless cars go faster than the conventional type, this does seem to be the case. Most of these type of vehicles seem to arrive here during July and August. I wonder where they are made?

Turning off roads and motorways also seems to be a grave problem for the indicator type car as well, they will sometimes indicate a right turn, change their mind at the last minute and swerve back on in front of you or, if they are not sure where they are going, they will slow down and sometimes stop, causing the cars following to make emergency stops. That’s when your car decides to overtake them and that is the signal for the car in front to floor his accelerator to stop you, as this will cause severe loss of face, he has to beat you. Much to the consternation of their drivers who I assume realising their car

has made a mistake will throw both arms in the air gesticulating with wild strange signals and obviously berating their vehicles (or could I be wrong?). How many times have you followed a car or van with it’s indicator or hazard flashers permanently on? Are they deaf and blind? How can they ignore the incessant clicking noise or the flashing lights on the dashboard? Maybe the drivers are singing, listening to loud music, reading, looking somewhere else except the road or perhaps drunk or asleep. Have fun guessing which it might be!

Others with possible sight impediments are the ones that drive in the middle of the road straddling the white line. I suppose it gives them something to aim at and, if they decide to turn left or right, they will be 50% right. If you are joining a roundabout beware, I think the rule is to push in wherever possible and if you see a car coming round towards you from the left, ignore it, floor the accelerator but under no circumstances look left, you have to stare straight ahead and pretend no-one’s there. That way if they side swipe you, you didn’t see them did you? Parking also seems to cause problems. Some vehicles double or treble park, or just stop so their owners can chat with mates, ask the way, pop into the bank, or shop, blocking the street and causing tailbacks. Supermarkets and car parks are a haven for these mostly big or posh cars. They will park sideways,

Calahonda diagonally, or just so close to you that you can’t get back into your car, so you have to wait while their owners return from the beach or hoovering out the Supermarket.

I also reckon there are parts of Europe where people have never seen cars or roads because of the amount of pedestrians who behave as if they have never seen one before. These poor people will stand on the edge of a pedestrian crossing staring blankly into space and wondering what this black and white thing is for, or jump onto it in front of cars at the last minute, as if playing hopscotch, then relish a slow amble across as if this was the highlight of their day. Others prefer to walk down the middle of the road next to each other and as you approach, being a good motorist, you will tap the horn to warn of your approach. This can cause different reactions: jumping in shock is one, or verbal abuse is another. I can see if you have not encountered a mechanical monster bearing down on you on this straight long smooth thing with a line in the middle before, how it can have this effect. I feel strangely better having put pen to paper, it has relieved my pent up frustrations, the wife feels safer anyway. Am I the only one who cares about all this or is it that I am getting older and grumpier as my family tells me. Don’t think so !! Editor says: We all notice these things so it’s nice to find out that we’re not the only ones who get frustrated by it all.

Susan Baker Isn’t it nice to have cooler early mornings and evenings at last? This morning I took my dog for a walk in the “campo” and very nearly had to dig out a cardie! Of course, most of us have come here because we were totally fed up with the horrible colourless life with hardly any sun and the constant rain for nine months of the year but, we are northern Europeans at

Manilva

the end of the day so a bit of rain won’t hurt us – we’re not sugar lumps that are going to melt and are made of sturdier stuff than to be put off by a bit of drizzle. After so many years here, I am finding myself missing the daffodils and tulips that come out every spring in the UK and the silent mornings of a snow covered street in the winter. Never satisfied us Brits!

Comment By Ken Campbell

Autumn is here! Last Sunday 22nd September was the autumn equinox, the day when there are equal hours of daytime and night time.

T

he Sun rose from due east, was directly overhead at the equator at noon and set due west. It has now passed from the Northern Hemisphere into the Southern Hemisphere. From now on the days become shorter than the nights for the Northern Hemisphere while the opposite is true for the Southern Hemisphere as they approach spring. he days will continue to get shorter until December 21st the winter solstice or the shortest day of the year. After that date the days slowly get longer again until we reach March 21st the spring equinox when once again there will be 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night. t is not the Sun that is moving but the Earth. We are tilted over by about 23½° and it is this tilt that causes our seasons. During June the northern part of the Earth is tilted toward the Sun, and then during December the Southern Hemisphere gets its share of the summer rays. ake a note of the altitude of the Sun above the horizon and each day you’ll see it getting lower and lower in the sky. People with south facing windows will notice the sunlight streaming in through their windows at noon and gradually stretching further into the house as it gets lower each day. But here’s a natural phenomenon you might not have realised. That is, the Sun actually sets faster around the time of an equinox. The fastest sunsets (and sunrises) occur on or near the equinoxes. What’s more, the slowest sunsets (and sunrises) occur at or near the solstices. This is true whether you live in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere. And, by the way, when we say sunset here, we’re talking about the actual number of minutes it takes for the disc of the sun to sink below the western horizon. t every equinox, the sun rises due east and sets due west. That means – on the day of an equinox – the sun hits the horizon at its steepest possible angle. In other words, the sun is dropping almost straight down from above. Meanwhile, at a solstice, the sun is setting farthest north or farthest south of

T I

M

A

due west. The farther the sun sets from due west along the horizon, the shallower the angle of the setting sun. That means a longer duration for sunset at the solstices. lthough the sunset duration varies by latitude, on the equinox the sun sets in about 2 ¾ minutes at 36° latitude (Malaga). Meanwhile at 36° latitude on the solstice the sun sets in roughly 3 1/3 minutes. agle-eyed readers will notice that the Sun doesn’t rise at 6.00am and set again at 6.00pm on the equinox. This is because the Sun’s image is refracted a little through our atmosphere and although we can see the Sun as it rises it can still be below the horizon for a few minutes longer. Likewise as we see the sun setting in the west it is already below the horizon and we are seeing a slightly refracted image of it. This can add up to over six minutes of ‘extra’ sunlight and even more depending on atmospheric conditions. lso Sunrise is defined as the instant when the upper edge of the sun's disk becomes visible above the horizon – not when the centre of the sun is visible. In the same sense, ‘sunset’ refers to the moment the upper edge disappears below the horizon. At both instances, the centre of the sun is below the horizon, and therefore the equinox day lasts a little longer than 12 hours. ven though day and night aren’t exactly equal on the day of the equinox, there are days when they are both very close to 12 hours. However, this date depends on the latitude, and can vary by as much as several weeks from place to place. At 36°, the latitude of Malaga, that date occurs tomorrow 26th September. Tomorrow the Sun will rise at 08.09 and set at 20.08 giving 11 hours 59 minutes 39 seconds. Don’t forget, Spain is always 1 hour ahead of GMT and we are currently in daylight saving time adding another hour making it 2 hours ahead of GMT.

Vettel win can’t silence the boo’s New Caterham Sebastian Vettel said a travelling contingent of hardcore Ferrari fans were to blame for repeated booing as he was again heckled after dominating the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday. The German, booed on the podium in both Belgium and Italy, was jeered again as he took the honours in Singapore, Afterwards Vettel, who is sprinting towards his fourth straight world title after seven wins in 13 races, said the booing was sour grapes from a group of well-heeled Ferrari loyalists.

Vettel admitted he hadn't given the crowd the "most exciting race" after setting off from pole and completing 61 laps of the Marina Bay circuit unchallenged. But he insisted the boos did not bother him – as long as he was able to keep winning.

"As long as they keep booing we're doing a very good job, that's the way I see it," Vettel said. "It's not people from Singapore or from one country only. It's normal in sports – when people support one driver they don't like another driver to win, equally there were a lot of German flags round the track.” The German led from pole to flag and lapped on average almost two seconds quicker than his rivals to finish 32.6 seconds clear of Alonso and take another big step towards a fourth successive title with six races remaining.

Kimi Raikkonen shrugged off back pain to climb from 13th on the grid to third for Lotus in a challenging race that was held up by one decisive safety car period when

Australian and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso were both reprimanded after the Spaniard gave Webber a lift back to the pits after the Singapore Grand Prix.

Webber retired on the last lap and was stranded at Turn Seven. Alonso, who was second stopped to allow Webber to climb onto his car as he drove to the pits. It is Webber's third reprimand in 2013, triggering an automatic grid penalty.

The rules say three reprimands in one season will trigger a 10-place grid penalty if two of them were imposed for "driving infringements".

British car manufacturer Caterham has taken the wraps off its latest highperformance model – a radical racer with no windscreen. The Caterham AeroSeven Concept is the first car from the firm to be fitted with driver aids like traction control. Engineers have given the lightweight sportscar a 2-litre Ford engine developing 237bhp – giving it a 0-62mph time of “less than four seconds”.

Caterham, which is owned by QPR tycoon Tony Fernandes and a favourite of Simon Cowell, unveiled the concept in Singapore ahead of the Grand Prix. It is the first of a new range of Caterhams, with the manufacturer also hinting at a future SUV. Graham Macdonald, managing director of Caterham Cars, said: 'Over

the coming years, we will be expanding our range of sports cars as we look to meet the differing needs and desires of potential customers – from the lifestyle customer to the ultimate thrill-seeker.

“The AeroSeven Concept is the first model in that journey”' The car will go on sale next year and, while prices are yet to be confirmed, it is expected to cost in excess of £50,000.

Caterham will build the car in Dartford, Kent, which is another welcome boost to the UK car industry. Figures from the SMMT this week revealed 91,282 cars were built in the UK in August – up a staggering 16.2 per cent on last year.

Greg Harlow bringing Di Canio unique tour group to sacked Miraflores after

Former World Champion Greg Harlow (pictured) is bringing a group of bowlers to Miraflores Bowls Club on Tuesday 1st October. The group is unique in that they are travelling to Malaga as part of a No Fly Cruising holiday organised by the renowned bowls centre of Potters Leisure from Norfolk. The 4* cruise ship Balmoral will be docking in Malaga for only one day to enable the bowls match against Miraflores to take place. They then continue their cruise of the Mediterranean only stopping at two other destinations for bowls matches (Mahon, Menorca & Cartagena, Murcia). The party are due to arrive in

the morning and will be staying for the day until their coach takes them back to the ship. As always spectators will be made very welcome and can be assured of an entertaining day and a special opportunity to watch one of the world's top bowlers in action. Refreshments and food will be available from Craig & Sandra at the bar.

Sunderland players approached the club's chief executive Margaret Byrne to complain about manager Paolo Di Canio before the Italian's sacking. Di Canio held a heated team meeting on Sunday following the 3-0 defeat by West Bromwich Albion. Afterwards senior players told Byrne that the situation had become untenable because of the Italian's "brutal and vitriolic" criticism of the squad. Former Chelsea and West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo is the bookmakers' favourite to replace Di Canio, with Gianfranco Zola also being named.

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips

I received an email from Chris who tells me he is an on line player – he prefers Holdem NL cash at 25/50c limit and has been playing for about 18 months. His question is, when he hits a big flop he always finds it difficult to take down a big pot as his opponents always seem to fold, He also cites an example of a week ago when he hit his first Royal Flush against an aggressive player. “After raising with Ac/Qc pre flop in an early position, the villain was on the button calling and 3 betting a lot of raises from position. The flop came down Jc/10/c/Kc which I checked allowing the villain to bet half the pot which I duly smoothed called. The turn came 7d which I checked and so did the villain, the river showed a 3s so led out with a half pot size bet for value

but the folded.”

player

In my opinion Chris you extracted the most you were going to get paid from this player, he bet the flop because it was a dangerous board for a none club hand and no doubt shut down after your call putting you on a better hand. This may be a clue to why you are not taking down bigger pots. When you hit the nuts, you state you are a tight player with good hand selection but are you playing too predictably? Most players at 25/50c level have a good understanding of the game so watch your betting and calling patterns, either play every hand exactly the same or mix it up. Remember if you’re going to mix it up be very random playing every hand differently. If you raised

with AK 3xbb last time only raise by 2xbb this time. If you do raise and get some action do not play the flop the same way. Sometimes fire a continuation bet and sometimes check even if you hit the flop (if you hit a good flop on a strong drawing board I recommend always betting out for value and defence).

You have only been playing a short time Chris so to be holding your own at 25/50c blinds in my opinion you are doing well. The standard of play here by the regulars is good and they will pick up on line tells whereas at the micro levels this is less of an issue. At 25/50c we do need to mix things up by playing few random hands rather than just premium hands, as these players will call and 3 bet super tight players as they know if they fire back to fold. At the micro levels we need to play tight aggressive ABC poker as a lot of players at these levels do not like the fold button ... which is good for a winning player. Man Utd fans score victory over Glazers

Manchester United fans have scored a long-awaited victory over the Glazer family after the club’s owners conceded defeat in their attempts to fight the listing of Old Trafford as an Asset of Community Value. In April, the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) launched an attempt to safeguard the future of the 103-year-old stadium by appealing for Old Trafford to be registered by Trafford Council as an ‘Asset of Community Value’ under the ‘Assets of Community Value Regulations of the Localism Act (2011)’. An official listing reduces the possibility that the stadium could be sold by the Glazer family or that the club could move to another ground.

Henrick Stenson win Battling away point for Málaga earns him big money Real Sociedad 0 - 0 Málaga A very good year just gets better for Henrik Stenson. The Swedish golfer walked away with $11.44 million after winning the Tour Championship and clinching the FedEx Cup title in Atlanta on Sunday, saying the victory is "going to take a little time to sink in". It better not take too long, because in a few weeks Stenson enters the final leg of the European Tour, where he leads the standings in the Race to Dubai. As Europe's version of the FedEx Cup, the race will culminate with four playoff tournaments

offering more than $30 million in purses. "Yeah, I'm in a great position for winning the money title in Europe," Stenson said. "Again, it's going to take some good play." The 37-year-old has been on a roll since mid-summer with a string of top 10 finishes in big events. In addition to the Tour Championship, he won the Deutsche Bank Championship during the

FedEx Cup playoffs. This hot run has elevated him to No. 4 in the world rankings.

"No one's won the FedEx and the Race to Dubai," he said. "Of course, we're going to give that our next shot."

Cavendish won the final stage around the streets of London, his third stage win in this year's race. But Wiggins, 33, negotiated the 10-lap 88km course along the Thames to retain his place at the top of the standings.

Eliseau shot weakly after just 8 minutes for Málaga, and Íñigo Martínezon for Sociedad earned himself a booking on 19 mins after he handled the ball into the net. In the 27th minute Málaga’s Portillo had a shot well saved, and last week’s hat trick hero El Hamdaoui’s movement was giving the home side plenty to think about. But although it was Málaga having the better of the first half there was no goal to show for it.

The second half was much better and Sociedad had the first clear cut chance, when Agirretxe shot inches wide when the ball came to him at the far post. On 65 minutes another chance for the home team fell to Vela, but, Málaga’s keeper Caballero got down to save superbly. El Hamdaoui was replaced

by Santa Cruz after 67 minutes and Sociedad also made some changes with Griezmann and Zurutuza replacing Castro and Pardo. Griezmann looked lively as Sociedad pressed for the win. Málaga though were finishing the game strongly, with first Duda and then Santa Cruz heading wide on 78 minutes after good work by Antunes on the left.

The final 15 minutes were a bit frantic, with Santa Cruz having two chances the first headed over after a cross from Gámez and then from a cross by Antunes again his header went wide. From another good move Santa Cruz had a shot well saved and from the resultant corner Tissone somehow headed wide. Griezmann had the last chance for Sociedad but headed wide as the game ended in stalemate. A good point against a Champions League side, which sets up another Andalucian derby in the week at home to Almeria and another away game against Valladolid on Friday night. Report by Scott Forbes

Andy Murray is recovering well from back surgery British number one Andy Murray is recovering in hospital after minor surgery on his troublesome back. The 26-year-old Scot says the first thing he said when he came round from the operation was: "Did I win?" Murray is unlikely to play again this season, but hopes to begin his pre-season training in Miami in November. The world number three underwent surgery in an attempt to sort out a disc problem in his lower back. The injury forced him to pull out of the French Open in May, although he recovered in time to become Britain's first male Wimbledon singles champion since 1936.
