More than 2m have fled Syria

More than two million Syrians are now refugees, with the total going up by a million in the past six months, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a statement on Tuesday. It added that more than 700,000 have fled to Lebanon, and more Syrians are now displaced than any other nationality. The statement went on: "Syria is haemorrhaging women, children and men who cross borders often with little more than the clothes on their backs."

Around half of those forced to leave are children, UN agencies estimate, with about three-quarters of them under 11. Just 118,000 refugee children have been able to continue in some sort of education, and only one-fifth have received some sort of counselling,

with agencies warning of a "lost generation" of child refugees ill-equipped to help rebuild Syria in the future.

Lebanon has received the highest number of refugees, even though it is the smallest of Syria's neighbours and one of the least able to cope. There is now thought to be one Syrian refugee in Lebanon to roughly every six Lebanese. Jordan and Turkey have taken in the second and third highest numbers respectively. Pointing out that more than 97 per cent of Syria's refugees are being hosted by countries in the

surrounding region, the UNHCR said the influx was "placing an overwhelming burden on their infrastructures, economies and societies".

It once again appealed for "massive international support" to help neighbouring countries deal with the crisis. The UN said the conflict in Syria has caused the world's worst refugee crisis for 20 years, with numbers not seen since the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. More than 100,000 people are thought to have died since the uprising against Syrian President

Another very full weekend was experienced. On Friday we went to the Buzby’s Birthday Bash in Benalmadena. Terry, Julie and Cheryl were all celebrating birthdays so you can just imagine the party atmosphere. Regulars at the venue did their bit and were joined by new-kid-on-theblock Just James who was very good indeed. A little nervous beforehand as it was his first gig on the Costa having only recently arrived but he was very good indeed and I feel we may be seeing a fair bit of this young man around and about from now on. On Saturday we went to a “free market” in the patio where The Village Inn is which was weird, but fun and I’ll tell you more about that next week, followed by the opening party for La Parra Gold in Los Boliches that sees “John The Fish” returning to his original venue – not that you’d recognise it as such... it looks fab, must have taken a lot of work and planning – so pop along to these places and have a look around.

Another week

One thing that struck me this week was looking at a girl riding a scooter with her helmet on back-to-front. Apparently it doesn’t mess your hair up so much and, as long as you have the thing on your head, you’re legal! As someone who used to ride a big bike, all I have to say about this craze is “Bonkers” the thing will break your neck if you come off, then you won’t be worried what your hair looks like! Then again, fires... three on one finca this morning on La Carreta. They are still illegal and can spread quickly killing all in its path. STOP IT!!

US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel and Secretary of State John Kerry appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday to try to muster support for military intervention in Syria in the run-up to a vote in Congress next week, and both men will give evidence that the Syrian government used chemical weapons.

On Monday a senior state department official told a gathering of Democrat politicians that a vote against military action would be America's "Munich moment", referring to the 1938

Munich Agreement which was seen as British and French appeasement of Nazi Germany before World War II. A report presented to the French Parliament by Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault on Monday said the alleged chemical assault "could not have been ordered and carried out by anyone but the Syrian government". Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen also said on Monday that he is personally convinced that a chemical attack took place and that the Assad government was responsible.

The annual festival of the Moorish Moon, complete with street market and performers, which attracts thousands of visitors each year will begin this weekend in Guaro .

Princess back in hot water Simplifing work The judge investigating the case of King Juan Carlos's son-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin, now has to decide if Princess Cristina committed tax fraud by declaring €1.2 million she received from her father in 2004 as a loan to be repaid and therefore tax deductible.

The aim of the judicial analysis of the princess’s financial movements between 2002 and 2012 is to determine if there is evidence she committed tax fraud or money laundering offenses. The princess has been drawn into the fraud investigation involving her husband who, together with his former business partner Diego Torres, is suspected of siphoning off millions in public funds to private companies via his non-profit Nóos Institute via over-invoicing for sports and tourism events in the Balearic Islands and Valencia. Cristina was listed as a spokesperson, board member and advisor at the Nóos Institute. She was named as an official

involvement in the Nóos case. The public prosecutor also requested that the entire Nóos investigation – not just the part involving the two local PP politicians – be transferred for judgment in the Valencia region’s courts. The public prosecutor has detected evidence of criminal activity in the signing of contracts relating to the Valencia Summit by the two leaders and Urdangarin between 2004 and 2006.

suspect in the investigation in April this year, but the provincial High Court of Mallorca later decided to remove her from the list. At the beginning of August Judge José Castro widened the scope of his investigation into the princess’s possible involvement in money laundering and tax offenses relating to her husband’s suspicious business activities in order to determine whether she should once again be cited as an official suspect in the case. Castro asked the tax agency to track all

operations that Princess Cristina made with third parties, especially those relating to the renovation work on the Pedralbes mansion, which the couple bought for €6 million in 2004.

In another development, on Monday the Anticorruption Public Prosecutor called on the regional High Court of Valencia (TSJCV) to investigate and indict the Valencia mayor Rita Barberá, and former regional premier Francisco Camps for their

In May, Judge Castro sent a detailed statement to the TSJCV outlining the evidence relating to Camps’ and Barberá’s involvement in negotiations prior to the signing of agreements for the Valencia Summit and the never-held European Games, for which Nóos received around €3 million of public funds. Castro also proposed that the court take on responsibility for investigating this part of the case, given that their parliamentary immunity meant both Camps and Barberá could only be tried there.

contracts

Labour Minister Fátima Báñez last week announced plans to simplify the paperwork involved in hiring workers, slashing the current number of 41 different types to just five categories of contracts: permanent, temporary, relief, work experience and apprenticeships. The current 41 different formulas are accompanied by a mass of different incentive arrangements provided by the

government, such as reduced Social Security contributions.

Báñez told the congressional committee on employment: “The existence of a high number of formulae and a complex system of incentives constitute an obstacle for the small businessman.” She said the technical work on simplifying the system was well underway with input from all social agents.

Fascist symbols Railways to get Sir John Major are unacceptable safety boost unveils his street The ruling Partido Popular will expel members who make public displays of fascist symbols, the head of the PP’s Nuevas Generaciones youth wing, Beatriz Jurado, announced last week.

Her statement came after a number of Nuevas Generaciones members displayed fascist symbols on social network sites over the summer, including the national flag in place during the time of the Franco dictatorship and Nazi salutes. She said an investigation had opened to determine the authenticity of the images and it had found that in some cases users of Twitter and Facebook had falsely identified themselves as party members.

One of the accused has filed a complaint with the police claiming that his account in a social

network site had been hacked. The investigation has identified six cases of PP members using fascist symbols in public, four in the region of Valencia – two of whom are town councillors – and two in Castilla-La Mancha. The PP's statutes call for members who damage the image of the party or break the law to be expelled. PP spokesman Esteban González Pons said; “Those who carry out such stupid acts do not deserve to belong to the PP."

However, during a TV interview television, the deputy PP spokesman in Parliament, Rafael Hernando, called on the main opposition Socialist Party to expel members who publicly display the Republican flag, which he compared with the flying of the Franco-era national flag.

Work has begun to equip the country's entire rail network with the advanced safety measures that were lacking on the section of track at the curve at Angrois, Galicia, where an Alvia train derailed on July 24th, killing 79 passengers and injuring more than 150.

Public Works Minister Ana Pastor announced that signalling protocol and automatic braking systems will be set up on stretches of line where extreme speed reductions in short timeframes are required. The accident on the stretch of line between Ourense and Santiago de Compostela occurred when the driver entered a sharp turn at almost 200km/h, when the speed limit was 80km/h.

Driver Francisco José Garzón Amo remains the only person to have been

provisionally charged in the investigation into the crash. He admitted to police after the accident that he had been on the telephone seconds before the Alvia from Madrid to Ferrol came off the tracks.

However, the investigating judge subsequently cast his net further and ordered state railways manager Adif to provide a list of names of those employees responsible for safety on the fatal stretch of line. Adif provided that list to Judge Luis Aláez last Thursday, but did not say how many people were on the list, or give any details on its contents.

Sir John Major was back in Candeleda – the town he has been visiting for the past 25 years – last weekend to unveil a street named after him. He was accompanied by wife Norma and former Tory Cabinet ministers Douglas Hogg and Ian Lang. He admitted his

Socialists paid to have Catalan PP chief spied on The Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) paid €1,750 to a private detective agency for a recording of a meeting between regional Partido Popular leader Alicia Sánchez-Camacho and Victoria Álvarez, the former girlfriend of Jordi Pujol Ferrusola, son of a former Catalan premier, according to a report by the National Police investigating the case.

During their lunch meeting, the two women

are reported to have discussed the moneylaundering operations of Pujol Ferrusola, whose father, Jordi Pujol, held office from 1980 to 2003. PSC leader Pere Navarro has repeatedly insisted that his party is not involved in any covert surveillance. However, a month ago he refused to appear in the regional assembly to explain the provisional charges against Lluïsa

Bruguer, the bloc’s financial administrator. Her computer had been seized by police, who recovered correspondence with Método 3 detective agency.

In the agenda of a Método 3 detective, Elisenda Villena, under the heading “summary of jobs” is a paragraph detailing the operation, its costs and the file number 20,178 – which is the reference number the

agency held for Catalan MP José Zaragoza, who had admitted in February that the PSC used Método 3.

The figures from Villena’s notes also match the cost of the espionage against SánchezCamacho, for which the PSC was billed. Police therefore suspect that the PSC ordered the sting, rather than merely being offered the recording after the event.

Briton arrested over father's death Police arrested a 45-yearold British man last Saturday on suspicion of killing his 69-year-old father at a camping site at in L'Estartit on the Costa Brava.

A police spokesman said: "The incident took place this morning at around 1.45am at a

camping site in L'Estartit when the arrested man is believed to have attacked his father.

"The victim was taken by emergency services to hospital to be attended for the wounds he suffered, while local police in Torroella de Montgri arrested the alleged

perpetrator for domestic violence."

Local reports said the incident took place at the Castell Montgri campsite. Police were alerted by the site's night duty security guard, according to a report on the El Punt Avui newspaper's website.

When emergency services arrived they found the victim unconscious on the ground next to a pool of blood. He was taken to Josep Trueta hospital in Girona with severe head wounds and other injuries, but doctors were unable to save him and he died late that day.

Fee doesn't keep tomatina fans away

This cash-strapped town in the Valencia region introduced an entry fee of €10 for the first time last week to outsiders wanting to participate in its world-famous tomato-throwing festival.

Some 5,000 free tickets were allocated for local residents and there was speculation as to how many non-residents would turn up this year. But regular participants from Australia, Japan, the uK and the uS turned up in their usual thousands to take part in the hour-long tomato fight that leaves the streets running in red juice. However, the general acceptance of the fee has raised fears that festivals around crisis-hit Spain could be "privatised".

Brazil, Mexico demand spying explanation

Brazil and Mexico have both demanded an explanation from the US over claims that the National Security Agency (NSA) spied on their presidents, after journalist Glenn Greenwald, a columnist for the Guardian newspaper, told TV Globo's news programme "Fantastico" on Sunday that secret documents leaked by Edward Snowden showed how US agents had intercepted internet data from Brazilian leader Dilma

Rousseff and Mexico's Enrique Pena Nieto. Brazil said data interception would represent an unacceptable violation of sovereignty. Mexico called for a probe. Both the Brazilian and Mexican governments summoned their respective US ambassadors. Mexico requested an "an exhaustive investigation" to determine who may be responsible for the alleged spying on Mr Pena Nieto's emails before his election last year.

The revelations come at sensitive moment for Ms Rousseff, who is due to make her first state visit to the United States in October. It is the only state visit offered this year by President Barack Obama to a foreign leader.

Brazilian officials have not said whether the allegations could lead Ms Rousseff to call off her visit to Washington. Greenwald was the first journalist to reveal the secret documents leaked by

Snowden on June 6th. Since then, he has written several stories about surveillance by US and UK authorities. The detention last month for nine hours at London's Heathrow airport of Greenwald's partner, David Miranda, was widely criticised in the UK and abroad. Greenwald said his partner's detention was "clearly intended to send a message of intimidation" to those working on the NSA revelations.

Aussie PM defends Red Bull heir gay marriage faces arrest

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has delivered a strong defence of gay marriage on live television, just days before the September 7th election.

In a Q&A session on ABC News, Mr Rudd said he backed gay marriage after "years of reflection in good Christian conscience". His defence sparked debate and was praised by gay advocacy groups. Mr Rudd, who was previously opposed to gay marriage, changed his position in May and has been criticised for changing his beliefs

just to get a popular vote.

Latest polls show Mr Rudd's Labour party trailing eight points behind the LiberalNational opposition coalition. Monday's polls also put opposition leader Tony Abbott – who opposes gay marriage – ahead of Mr Rudd as preferred prime minister for the first time. Abbott has described himself as "an opponent of gay marriage", and drew controversy on August 14th when he appeared to describe same-sex marriage as "the fashion of the moment".

Prosecutors in Thailand have asked for a warrant to arrest a grandson of Red Bull's billionaire, co-creator Chaleo Yoovidhaya, after he failed to appear at a court hearing. Vorayuth Yoovidhaya, 28, is alleged to have driven his Ferrari into a police officer and killed him last September. His lawyers say he had become ill in Singapore, and was unable to return to Thailand in time for the indictment hearing. He denied his client had fled the country and said he would return in the next

three days and co-operate with investigators.

Vorayuth faces a maximum of 10 years in jail on charges of causing death through reckless driving and failing to stop to help the victim. His indictment has been delayed several times in the past year, and the initial investigation team had to be disbanded after an officer was accused of covering up Vorayuth's involvement.

The suspect's grandfather died earlier this year.

Ancient artefacts found in melting snow

an iron age tunic, Neolithic arrows and bow fragments, thought to be about 6000 years old, have been discovered under snow on Norwegian mountains, which is rapidly melting due to climate change. The tunic, found on the Norwegian Lendbreen glacier, was partly bleached from sun and wind exposure. it showed hard wear and tear and had been repaired with two patches. it was made between 230 and 390 aD and is one of only a handful of tunics that exists from this period.

Two different fabrics were present and the fibre tips revealed that both were made of lamb's wool or wool from adult sheep. The artefacts were extremely well preserved for their age and fragility, but as the changing weather increases the speed at which the snow melts, other artefacts may degenerate before they are found. Police dog 'weddings' condemned

Culture Minister TB Ekanayake has strongly condemned a mass "wedding" of police dogs which he said offensively used traditional Buddhist symbols. Police "married" nine pairs of dogs on a platform decorated with white cloth and flowers in a ceremony resembling a traditional marriage. They have defended the "wedding" saying that it was done to promote the domestic breeding of sniffer dogs. However, they also apologised for their actions. a police spokesman told reporters that in 2011 Sri Lanka spent 70m rupees (£339,000) on importing police dogs from the Netherlands. They said that the domestically-run breeding programme would not only keep this money in the country but would also produce dogs better suited to its climate.

Happy ending for some

The country's main state-run university has agreed to admit 1,800 school-leavers who failed this year's admission exam, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf announced after she held talks with officials at the University of Liberia over the failure of every single candidate who took the exam. Nearly 25,000 school leavers failed the test, with officials saying they did not have a basic grasp of English. Ms Sirleaf said the university, one of two state-run universities in Liberia, had set a higher standard for admission this year, leading to the mass failure. Ms Sirleaf did not say why the university, based in the capital Monrovia, had agreed to admit 1,800 students after discussions with her.

Mr Tanaka also accused the plant's operator of careless management during the crisis, adding that it may not be possible to avoid dumping some contaminated water into the ocean.

The damage to the plant has necessitated the constant pumping of water to cool the reactors – a process which creates an extra 400 tonnes of contaminated water every day. That water is being stored in temporary tanks at the site.

Last month Fukushima's operator, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), revealed that 300 tonnes of highly radioactive water had leaked from one of the tanks, in the most serious incident to date. But in recent months there have also been leaks from pipes

Anoud Senussi with her younger brother and father

and there are concerns that water is seeping from damaged reactor buildings into the ground.

The latest leak is believed to be the fourth major leak from storage tanks at Fukushima since 2011 and the worst so far in terms of volume. Experts have said the scale of water leakage may be worse

than officials have admitted. Mr Tanaka's comments came a day before the government unveiled plans on Tuesday to rescue the clean-up operation. Government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said an estimated 47 billion yen (£304 million) will be invested to stop leaks of radioactive water from the

plant. He said the leaks were getting worse and the government "felt it was essential to become involved to the greatest extent possible".

The funding pledge comes days before a decision is due on the host nation for the 2020 summer Olympic Games, for which Tokyo is a candidate.

Unilever withdraws Venezuela admits Flora advert economic problems

Anglo-Dutch firm Unilever said on Tuesday that it has ordered the withdrawal of a Flora margarine advertisement in South Africa which has been condemned as homophobic. The advert features a bullet with the words "Uhh dad I'm gay" flying towards a heart made of china. The advert, on a pink background, includes the tagline "You need a strong heart today" near the Flora logo. Flora, owned by Unilever, has long promoted its margarine as helping consumers maintain a healthy heart. The company said on its Twitter feed that the advert was prepared by an

external agency in South Africa and was not approved by anyone at Unilever: "The advert is offensive and unacceptable and we have put an immediate stop to it." The firm's Johannesburg managing director Sarah Dexter said: "I would like to unreservedly apologise for this campaign and the unintended offence it has regrettably caused". She added: "We have requested the immediate removal of this work from all media." South Africa has one of the most liberal constitutions in the world, recognising gay rights. However, homophobia is rife and many gay and lesbian people have been attacked.

Finance minister Nelson Merentes acknowledged on Monday that the economic policies of late President Hugo Chavez and his successor have not yet succeeded. His remarks were an unprecedented analysis of the country's economic ills coming from a top government official. Merentes said the government had "improved" the living standards of many Venezuelans, but not solved the "structural problems" of the economy. Generous government subsidies have slashed poverty and inequality, but Venezuelans are suffering from the highest inflation in Latin America, sluggish growth and shortages. Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world and former president Hugo Chavez used them liberally to

She was arrested after reportedly flying back to Libya to visit her father, Abdullah al-Senussi, who is in jail for his alleged role in crimes committed during the rule of Muammar Gaddafi. He is also wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has accused him of responsibility for crimes against humanity during the uprising that ousted Gaddafi in 2011. The latest kidnapping appears to reinforce the ICC's argument that Libya is not ready to prosecute high-profile cases like that of Abdullah al-Senussi and Saif Gaddafi, both wanted by The Hague.

Perry who is a divorced mother of three added that many young girls believe they should look and act like porn stars to get affection from boys they are interested in.

In the ongoing and never ending tit for tat dialogue over Gibraltar, British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg joined in on Monday when he spoke directly to Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria by telephone in relation to the situation.

A spokesperson for the Deputy Prime Minister said: “ He reiterated the United Kingdom and Gibraltar’s commitment to ad hoc dialogue and confirmed that we were keen to discuss details of how we can take this forward.”

She said that the sex education curriculum that was drawn up in 2000 focuses on the biological side of sex and pregnancy and does not cover the emotional side of the subject enough. She said: “The rise of sexting, online bullying, porn and young people documenting their entire lives on the web needs to be a core tenet of how we teach sex and relationships.”

Claire Lilley, a policy adviser for the NSPCC said: “Many children will have already been exposed to a vast amount of inappropriate, unrealistic and sometimes downright harmful pornography through the internet. This can warp their view of what is normal and acceptable sexual behaviour. To protect children from these damaging messages they must be taught about sex in the context of healthy, caring relationships and how to protect and respect themselves and others.“

Sex education inadequate A survey carried out by the NSPCC has revealed that almost a third of children between 11 and 18-yearsold believe that what they are seeing on internet porn is how they should behave. Claire Perry, MP for Devizes in Wiltshire and an advisor to the Prime Minister on preventing the sexualisation of childhood, said that young people’s views of relationships and sex were being distorted by such images.

If someone blindfolded you and put you on a plane in LA, and you landed at Heathrow and they took it off, you wouldn’t have a clue where you were.” He said he wasn’t familiar with Ukip, but insisted “I just think we should get our own house in order before we open our doors. It’s mind-boggling to me.”

He said that there wasn’t really anything he missed about living in England as they can get most of the British foodstuffs and TV imported if they want it. He said. “But I get my Walkers Crisps delivered once a month. I have a box of Roast Chicken, a box of Salt and Vinegar, and a box of Monster Munch ... and there’s more Premier League football on TV there than there is here.” When asked about about footballers rolling around in apparent agony following contact with another player, he replied: “Yeah, well, that rolling around, that's the foreign players. I said it all 15 years ago, that diving would creep in, and also that the England team would suffer, because none of these foreign managers would buy English players. It's all happening, just like I said it would."

The young man in his twenties, who died on Monday, is thought to be the second victim within 24 hours at the resort with the other victim falling eight metres to his death. The report claims that seven people have fallen to their deaths this year on the island, usually after a nights drinking, and security at the hotels has been stepped up to try and stop the practice according to Spanish news Telecinco. Fake kidnap

Two British women have been arrested in Lisbon, Portugal after emergency services received many calls saying that they had been kidnapped. The women were seen being bundled into the back of a van in the middle of a public square but it turned out that it was an elaborate hoax arranged by some of the nine friends the pair were celebrating their 40th birthdays with. The pair said they had no prior knowledge of the stunt. They were arrested along with four employees of the company that performed the stunt. Portuguese authorites are not amused.

VC10 flies in to Cornwall Holidaymakers in Cornwall last week should not have been alarmed to see and hear a Vickers VC10 aircraft overhead in drab RAF colours.

Classic Air Force at Newquay Airport is taking delivery of one of the last three remaining airworthy “Queen of the Skies”. The first Vickers VC10 made its maiden flight on 29th June 1962 from Brooklands. The type would serve with BOAC (and BA until 1979) plus a number of overseas airlines throughout the 1960s and ‘70s and subsequently the Royal Air Force.

The Classic Air Force example was built for East African Airlines in 1967 and when joining the RAF in 1977 ‘ZA148’ was named ‘Guy Gibson VC’ after the leader of the Dambusters' Mission in May 1943. Amongst

the

many

aircraft it will join at the unique museum is another British Airways stalwart, a BAC 1-11.

Tim Skeet, Chairman of the Classic Aircraft Trust, which supports the aircraft on display at Newquay, said: “As an example of British design and engineering at its best, it is fitting that one of the last airworthy examples should find a home with the Classic Air Force. This is a very significant addition to the collection and a further attraction at Newquay.”

Schools Málaga Man Jailed crisis for Cannabis According to a recent survey by local Government officials classes for five to sevenyear-olds will exceed their legal limit of 30 due to the recent high birth rate in the UK. Areas such as playing fields, playgrounds, music rooms and libraries are having to be sacrificed to give more classroom space. At St John’s Church of England primary school in Bristol 75 pupils in its reception class are now being taught in a disused and converted police station for their lessons. Worst hit are Costessey, Norfolk, Purfleet in Thurrock and central Croydon. There will be at least 75 per cent more pupils by 2015 than the number of places currently available. And Labour are complaining that the new academies that saw 93 opening this new school year are aimed at Secondary education when Primary places are the most desperately needed.

Smuggling Attempt

44-year-old Nicholas Giles has been jailed for 12 months by Southampton Crown Court after being found guilty of attempting to smuggle approximately five kilos of cannabis into the UK with an estimated street value of £60,000.

The court heard that on 6th May 2013 UK Border Force officers at Southampton International Airport stopped Mr. Giles as he arrived on a flight from Málaga. Even before officers searched his baggage Mr. Giles admitted to having five kilos of “weed” in his suitcase. The case was opened and the drugs – as can be seen wrapped in clear plastic – practically filled his entire suitcase.

Nicholas Giles, of no fixed abode in Spain, was arrested and charged with “being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of the prohibition on importation of a class B controlled drug” – to which he pleaded guilty on 12th August at Southampton Magistrates Court. He was sentenced in the Crown Court this week.

Zero tolerance Union raids Seville for corruption supermarket Susana Díaz, who became Andalusia’s first female premier last week, sent out a message of change to tell Socialist sympathisers that she will be “implacable in the fight against corruption, in leading by example and with honesty”.

Díaz, who took over from José Antonio Griñán, will have her work cut out to distance herself from the ERE scandal that has eroded the Socialists over the last two years. Leaders of the opposition Partido Popular (PP) have already said they will do their best to link Díaz to the investigation into the wrongful use of the labour force adjustment plan (ERE) fund set up by the Junta de Andalucia to help companies slim down and meet severance costs. Judge Mercedes Ayala is conducting an investigation into the fund, which paid out large sums of money to people who were not entitled to compensation, known as "intrusos" (intruders), of

whom there are said to be more than 120 discovered so far.

While Díaz was not part of any government team during the period of time when the fraud allegedly took place (2001-2010), Griñán was the economy commissioner and the PP has claimed he stepped down halfway through his second term in order to shield his party from further scandal, should he finally be charged with wrongdoing. It is expected that Díaz

will be wary of including in her administration any politician tainted by the ERE case once she officially takes office on September 7th.

The Socialists in Andalusia have presented Díaz’s arrival as premier as an “historic change” in the region that will usher in “deep” institutional and economic reforms. The Partido Popular (PP), which won more votes than the Socialists in the March 2012 regional elections, has called for early elections.

The plants and mushrooms were grown in 80 cm of earth spread on the floors of the houses and were irrigated by the drip method using high quality materials worth an estimated €65,000 per house. The police said a special cultivation system was used to ensure yearround crops.

Around 200 activists took off with materials including pencils, erasers, markers, notebooks and pens, which they said will be distributed to “families in need” in the next few days. The protest was the latest in a series of similar poverty-protest operations carried out by SAT. Spokesman Diego Cañamero said: “We spoke to the shopping mall security staff and told them not to intervene, that it was a union protest action, and that it was not going to create problems, and that’s how it was. It went perfectly.”

A SAT statement read: “With this action, SAT aims to draw attention to the situation of two million men and women in poverty and the 400,000 families in Andalusia who

do not receive any type of help or benefit and in which all the family members are unemployed.”

The union argues that the cost of kitting children out for the start of the school year ranges from €100 to €150. However, the Junta de Andalucia’s policy of providing school textbooks free means that the outlay for parents is lower than in many other regions.

The approximate cost of the materials taken by the union members, who entered the supermarket

in pairs, was around €2,000. The police arrived as the protesters were leaving, but there were no arrests. Last summer the group raided a number of supermarkets, filling shopping carts with food and staple items, with the intention of giving them to NGOs.

Juan Manuel Sanchez Gordillo, the so-called “Robin Hood mayor” of Marinaleda in Seville province, led most of those raids but he has been absent from the protest scene for several months, said to be suffering from depression.

Beach-going parents left kids in car Police have arrested a couple in Benalmadena for leaving their three children locked in their car while they went to the beach. They told the police they had left the children behind because they did not want to go the beach their parents chose. The police said the two boys and one girl were left without ventilation or water and could not open the car doors from the inside.

A man alerted the police who called in the firemen to open the car. The children were very

thirsty, sweating profusely and said they felt dizzy.

The parents – a 48year-old man and his

39-year-old wife – were eventually located on the beach and arrested for temporarily abandoning their children.

A magical invasion

one of the most successful initiatives to promote the town this summer was the "Parks with Magic" project, with magicians performing their art in several green areas. now the costa del Sol Magicians' association plans to do something similar in 15 of the town's bars, restaurants and pubs this month. The Gavia restaurant will kick off the entertainment on September 6th, starting at 10 pm, followed by the laurel tavern the following night at the same time. on the 8th it will be the turn of the cafe Pub Hollywood and the Rincon de linares, starting at 8 pm. The shows will take place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8 pm in different venues for the rest of the month.

Divers from all over Spain have volunteered to raise the concrete blocks dropped in the bay by the Gibraltar authorities, according to the online newspaper El Confidencial Digital (ECD). In a report on Sunday it said divers Álvaro Cuadros and Vicente Jiménez made the headlines on August 23rd when they were filmed measuring the blocks lying on the seabed. They were mistakenly identified as Guardia Civil divers, the ECD said.

The photo that appeared in the press both here and in the UK rallied other divers to the cause and the two men approached the Fishermen's Brotherhood in La Linea with an offer to raise the blocks.

The two divers, who work for ControlSub, which offers underwater services, have already worked out how to raise the blocks, by tying Zeppelin balloons to them and then blowing up the balloons underwater. This technique is used to raise sunken boats from the

The number of visitors to the town increased 70 per cent this summer over the same period last year. Hotel reservations were up by 50 per cent, according to the local council's figures. The Manager of the costa del Sol Tourism office, carlos arturo Bernal, said the figures were "spectacular", well above the national and provincial average. Bernal also pointed out that Estepona is one of the towns in the province where visitors spend more time – with average stays of 18.4 days.

Who are you fooling?

O

n Sunday, opposition leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba told a meeting of Socialists somewhere in the EU that while the worst of the economic crisis seems to be over it was not because of the European Right's policies but despite them, and it is now time for "progressive" policies to reduce unemployment and create jobs. What I don't understand is the "despite of" bit – if it wasn't the reforms and cuts made by the PP here in Spain (which is what he really meant when he said "European Right") then just how did the economy start to mend? A miracle from Heaven? Economies don't heal themselves, they need help and I wish Rubalcaba would give a more detailed explanation of how the Spanish economy started to heal, without any help from the PP. But of course he can't – because poor old Mariano Rajoy has been working his butt off to get the economy back on its feet, while the opposition has done nothing but try to overthrow a legitimately elected government by any means – fair or foul, but mainly the latter.

T

his Socialists' attempt to make the great Spanish public believe that unemployment started on the day Rajoy was elected just under two years ago is beginning to get up my nose. So let's look at some official figures.

W

hen the Socialists won the March 2004 election, unemployment stood at 1.7 million. By the time they lost the general election in November 2011 there were 5.2 million unemployed, with the biggest rises between 2008 and 2011 because of the worsening economic crisis. What the Socialists don't care to remember is that if Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero had admitted in mid-2007 that there was a crisis and had taken the necessary steps to at least alleviate it, the crisis wouldn't have bitten so deep. But there was a general election looming – March 2008 – so he insisted that it was only a "slowdown". The press made hay of his inability to say the "c" word until June 2008 when – safely re-elected – he said "crisis" during a television interview with three journalists.

M

eanwhile, he became a dab hand at buying votes. He "regularised" the situation of around 650,000 illegal immigrants in 2006, despite the shrieks of agony from the rest of the EU. His idea was that these people would stay in Spain and vote for the Socialists in the local elections. The rest of Europe feared

they would immediately head north once they were legal in Spain, which opened up the rest of the EU for them. There are no official figures of how many stayed in Spain, but in May 2007 the Partido Popular actually won 200,000 more votes than the Socialists on the regional and local elections, so it would seem not to have worked.

H

owever, Zapatero blamed that on his flirtation with the Basque terrorist group ETA. He mistakenly believed that if he brought ETA in from the cold – that is, pacified it – he would earn the undying gratitude of all Spaniards. He soon found out that most Spaniards hated the idea and immediately started arresting suspected ETA sympathisers after the 2005 regional elections – doing a spectacular U-turn in less than a week.

T

hen we had the so-called baby cheque – €2,500 for first-time mothers – and €400 for unemployed couples to help them pay the rent. This was in the lead-up to the 2008 general election and he was – knowingly or spending unknowingly – money his government didn't have. Allegedly, Zapatero was given an Economics lesson lasting a couple of hours or so when he was first elected but he obviously never got his head round the subject!

I

www.thenewsonline.es

Another U-turn

was pleased to read in the online newspaper El Confidencial Digital (ECD) that the El Mundo newspaper's relentless coverage of the Barcenas scandal has not upped its circulation, as its editor Pedro J Jimenez had anticipated. In fact, according to the ECD, circulation has actually dropped and the newspaper's owners and board of directors are now trying to call him off. This is the man who accused Zapatero of ordering the pro-Socialist media during his first term in office to attack the Partido Popular by raking up the past, especially the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship on the pretext that the PP is Franco's natural heir – anything to stop people from voting for it.

A

t least the prize for Zapatero was staying in power – for Jimenez it was a paltry increase in his paper's circulation, which didn't happen.

hen the Partido Popular (PP) announced last week that it had destroyed crucial evidence regarding its finances, the shock that someone in the party would dare take such an action was felt across the country. PP officials argued that they were abiding by the law and protecting the personal information of citizens. But some would also claim that such a move was also a crime against the ongoing criminal investigation into the party's former treasurer Luis Bárcenas, who is facing charges stemming from tax evasion and money laundering. árcenas claims that he kept records of the PP’s illegal financing, including underthe-table donations by some of Spain’s leading industrialists and pay-offs of bonuses to top party officials. In July, Bárcenas told the High Court that he left scores of records inside the party’s computers that back up his claims of illegal financing. But those computer disks were destroyed by analysts who later argued that they were only following the country’s personal data protection law. Never mind that the court itself cannot ensure that such protection of rights can be had.

hat the PP did was nothing but a cover-up – hiding evidence that would no doubt lead to extending a massive criminal inquiry. PP officials will now have to explain to the court why they made such a move. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is hoping that the bit of good economic news – the nation’s unemployment figures for August – will indeed put Spaniards on another track, stopping them from thinking about Bárcenas and his sordid allegations.

Train inquiry

ince the tragedy of July 24th, an avalanche of unfair blame and speculation has fallen upon the train driver who has been provisionally charged for the accident and held responsible for the deaths of 79 people and more than 150 passengers. Most of this burden was unleashed by Renfe and government officials, even before a judicial inquiry had gotten underway. Now it appears that the investigative judge in Santiago de Compostela who is looking into the accident is also sifting through other possibilities regarding whether not only human error was committed but also human greed. member of the ruling Partido Popular (PP) who was on board the Alvia train and seriously injured in the accident after it derailed has called for the resignations of the top heads of Renfe and Adif, the Spanish management company that oversees the country's rail service. Ironically it was these two officials who publicly jumped to conclusions and placed the blame on the driver of the train for speeding. They made their unabashed comments in separate interviews on television just hours after the crash.

t is only fair that the court looks at all angles regarding Spain’s biggest rail accident in 40 years. One person cannot be held for the blame. There are other factors involved, including whether the track was constructed at a reported fast rate to showcase the PP government’s infrastructure projects. There are secondary people who should be held responsible and only a thorough inquiry will get to the heart of the matter.

The work of the RAF Association has stayed relevant and it continues to help those who have served for at least a day in the RAF from its beginnings through to the present day. The RAF Association currently helps any serving and exRAF personnel and their

families in times of need. Receiving no government contributions, their work is completely funded by the generosity of their members and through vital donations from our supporters in the general public and from businesses. RAFA’s Costa del Sol Branch will be celebrating with an anniversary Dinner and Dance at the Hotel Tamisa Golf on Sunday September 29th. On arrival you will enjoy Cava and Canapés followed by a three course dinner including wines throughout. Following dinner, you will be entertained by Arran Harding from Tres Divos. The event starts at 7:30 for 8:00pm. Tickets are €35 per person and can be booked by calling 952 567 412, 607 586 894 or the Tamisa Golf Hotel on 952 585 988.

There was a tombola with some fabulous prizes. Tickets were hidden inside balloons you had to pop open – which made the evening go with a bang!

The money raised will go towards caring for their latest rescue horse Mizzy (named for Mike and Izzy). The Association rescues a maximum of two at any one time, rehabilitating and retraining them before finding very special forever homes with fellow followers of natural horsemanship – previous rescues have gone to Parelli homes in the UK and Ireland.

Pet of the week

Mizzy is rather a special case since she arrived with a gaping wound on her back which will take a long time to heal completely – her previous owner would have sold her for meat but the slaughterhouse will not accept animals with infections, so Mizzy would have died a painful and lingering death from starvation and septicemia. As she is only five years old and has great potential the Association stepped in to save her. Hopefully with proper care and sufficient time she will make someone a great partner in the future. Don’t miss the Mijas Feria 2013

Starting tomorrow, Thursday 5th September, Mijas village will host the Mijas annual feria. The feria (fair) is 5 days and evenings of colourful celebration and festivities open to one and all, a mixture of food and drink stalls, dancing, traditional Andalucian activities and costumes. Here are a few of the main points. The fair starts at 6.00 pm with the children’s parade from the town hall followed at 9.30 pm by the official opening of the various “Casetas”. Casetas are temporary or permanent fair halls with stages, tables and seating, usually representing the different clubs and societies in an area or town, serving traditional food and drink. Then the first of the special Flamenco shows is in the main municipal Caseta at 11.00 pm.

Friday 6th at 2.00 pm is the inauguration of the daytime fair and in the evening at 10.00 pm the all important choosing of the Queen of the Fair, followed by a second Flamenco show. It is important to note the Queen of the Fair, La Reina Feria, is not chosen for her good-looks alone, she will retain her title for one year, during which time she will be asked to attend and represent Mijas and Mijas Costa at various social and other important events. Saturday is a full day of fun. The Mijas Bicycle Tour through the village at 10.30

pm and the Horse Riders event between 12.00 noon and 6.00 pm with scheduled stops for both at various horse and cycle friendly establishments to imbibe suitable refreshment for both horses and riders. More dancing and events in the afternoon, the serious business of the 2013 Mijas Dominoes Championship, the kids big party at 8.00 pm and two music shows later in the evening.

On Sunday at 11.00 am there is a special Mass in the village church, the daytime fair and more entertainment in the town gardens between 1.00 and 7.00 pm – and ending the day the procession of the Virgin of the Rock.

Monday 9th is another full day that includes two more parades, at 12.00 noon the musical parade and at 6.00 pm the horse and carriage parade and finally special entertainment that will go on late by A-Compás (€10 entrance) a lively very well known and popular Spanish band who are big

All in all a rather full week for Mijas and Mijas Costa, with plenty going on for the young and not so young. Well worth a visit with plenty to see and do. Mijas village is easy to reach by bus from Benalmádena, Coín and Fuengirola or there is plenty of parking available for just 1€ for up to 24 hours. OUT & ABOUT Salina’s Balti House Read your favourite news, plus a whole lot more in

If you are a lover of Indian Cuisine, Salina’s Balti House is an absolute must to visit. Unlike other Indian restaurants in the area, excellent as they may be, Salina’s is the only restaurant serving dishes in the style and flavours we are accustomed to in England.

Their award-winning chef with 35 years experience in Birmingham has brought to the Costa the recipes that are now as British as fish and chips… which I hasten to add, they also serve, if you are not in the mood for an Indian meal! Using spices that are not available here, but specially brought

Out & About

www.thenewsonline.es

in from the UK, Salina’s menu is formidably extensive.

I cannot praise the food that I enjoyed there highly enough. The Madras curry sauce was very ‘picante’ but not so much as to destroy the flavour of the succulent meat which was tender and perfectly cooked. The cheese naan bread I chose to accompany my meal was a little crispy on the exterior with a very light interior so it wasn’t the effort to eat that some heavy naan breads can be. I really would have loved to have sampled some of the many side dishes on offer, but I was honestly too full as

Salina’s do not skimp on their portion sizes. My companion, who fancied an English dish, passed on the chicken and chips and burger selection and plumped for good ol’ fish ‘n’ chips. After polishing off her large lightly battered fish, her only complaint was that there were too many chips!

Salina’s offers Thai, Indian, English and pizza set menus starting at only €5.95, and also a range of “Quick Bite” set menus for €4.95 which include an English bite, Pizza bite and – of course – an Indian bite. After our meal, we were

The group works in mixed media which includes charcoal, chalk and oil pastels, oil bars, acrylic paint, water-based dyes and collage to say nothing of the odd dollop of sand or cement! Brushes, spatulas and old credit cards are just some of the tools they use. Barbara Rae, a well-known Scottish artist said ‘It’s not what you put on that’s important. It’s what you take off’’ – hence the credit cards! It has been an enormous pleasure to share with them everything I have learned on my own journey.

But my greatest pleasure for sure, is to see their individual styles emerging as each person explores and pushes their boundaries.

A year later, they are the Four Horsemen, big time stage illusionists who climax their sold out Las Vegas show with a

bank apparently robbed for real. This puts agents Dylan Rhodes of the FBI and Alma Vargas of Interpol on the case to find out how they did it.

However, this mystery proves difficult to solve even with the insights of the professional illusion

in their performance at London’s O2 arena. One for fans of the band, but there are plenty of them! And the movie has topped box offices in its opening weekend.

thought I’d watch “Sightseers” after coming across a film review in “The Week”, (a magazine for which I have great admiration) that gave it three stars. Considering they gave Pete Doherty ‘s wooden acting film debut “Confession of a Child of the Century” one star (because they couldn’t mark any lower), three stars for “Sightseers” sounded promising.

exposer, Thaddeus Bradley. What follows is a bizarre investigation where nothing is what it seems with illusions, dark secrets and hidden agendas galore as all involved are reminded of a great truth in this puzzle: the closer you look, the less you see.

he plot is relatively simple, a couple go on a caravanning holiday across the UK and take out a few passers by en route. Now, I have a pretty dark sense of humour, I love horror films and gore, so, “Sightseers” should be right up my alley. But this was a “comedy”! I barely laughed – it was raw, disorganised, bloody and pointless, the script was forgettable, the acting was mediocre, the story had promise, but all in all it was a total let down.

L

ots of people were horrified of Tarantino’s infamous “I shot Marvin in the face” scene in “Pulp Fiction”, which was sick, but at the same time there was humour in a very dark situation. “Sightseers” lacked all humour, what they were doing was wrong and it was quite disturbing.

A

part from that the soundtrack really got on my nerves, there is only so much “Soft Cell” one can hear in a film, and they

weren’t even that great. They were (supposedly) “good”. The sound in general through the film was also bad, you could barely hear what Tina was saying and then Chris would speak and he’d be at a normal (or louder) pitch. Which meant I spent most of the night with the remote in my hand, going volume up, volume down, volume up, volume down, very, very irritating, especially when they weren’t even saying anything worth hearing.

I

think the only scene in the film I like was when Tina goes to the Pencil Museum alone and buys a huge pencil, then tries to write a note to Chris with it in a café, it was a little surreal.

A

nother film to dodge like flaming bullets is “Black Rock” – not one of Kate Bosworth’s best films, but then again I can’t remember her in anything good. Anyway, it’s about three girlfriends that go on a camping trip on a remote island who bump into three guys and one of the girls accidentally kills one of the guys. So, the two remaining guys turn against the girls. Who will make it off the island alive? The boys or the girls? It’s quite crummy to be honest, and there was a really weird and unnecessary scene in it where two of the girls are running round the forest naked. I mean really! If you’ve got two armed gunmen roaming the forest trying to kill you, being naked is only going to make you more vulnerable. What makes this even more disturbing is that the film was directed by a woman.

There is a boost in your energy as well as your confidence this week, a change that will help you feel lighter, a change that is heating up and fuelling your instincts with passion and zest. You may have been waiting for something that you wanted to take faster but that is all set to change and a breakthrough is coming. Your instincts are right on track, listen to them and you won’t go wrong. This is rather a whirlwind of a week for you when your whole life can change in the blink of an eye. The problem is you do not handle change that well, even if it is for your greater good. While you are catching up with reality you may feel your knees buckle a bit and your stomach weaken. Some compromise may be needed within a relationship that means a lot to you, so take the time out for this to happen. Your creative mind is enhanced this week inviting you to dream new dreams for the future as the ideas you come up with have a good chance of coming true. There are hints of monetary prosperity on the horizon so keep a positive frame of mind. The emphasis for you is going to be determined by your relationships and interactions with others. Speak your mind in a clear and precise way and you will be heard loud and clear. Electricity is in the air but you have the ability to weather any storm that is coming your way. Matters actually are currently out of your hands, all you can do is your best and then you need to let things be as one thing will eventually lead to another. Pay close attention to all the facts, figures or instructions. Social connections prove to be profitable so make sure your networking hat is on at the weekend. You have turned a corner and your instinct is sharper than it has been in years. A certain emotional chapter has finished and it is a chance for a new beginning, initially things may seem a little bumpy but you now have an inner sense that something positive is about to take place. Make sure that you pace yourself and put in the effort, time and energy necessary until you get there.

When you are being hard on yourself it leads to a procrastination to do what needs to be done. You love progress and productivity, it creates a feeling of control for you in an unpredictable world. So instead of getting into why something can’t or isn’t happening, just get on with what you can do and eventually things will fall into place. By the next week your perception shifts allowing you to understand and see yourself in a different light.

No matter how much you may want something to happen, if it is not meant to be, no amount of force will make it so. However, you do have an opportunity to secure something better for yourself for the long haul but in order to do this it will require a few steps to be well thought out. In fact you will need to trust and believe in yourself and the process of life. Just remain calm, centred and September 23rd - focused, the rest will unfold. October 22nd

Hard proof that someone is doing things for the right reasons, and the same reasons you are, is so important to you right now. Very shortly you will be turning a liberating corner and whatever fears or concerns are haunting you will soon be a distant memory. You are well able to spot all kinds of bargains too so this is a great time to make that purchase you have been dwelling upon for a while. Freedom has felt like a rare luxury lately as countless things have taken up your time and attention, however, a little extra space is on its way, igniting your tendency to seek out a situation you thought had been a lost cause. Your intuition is at its very best so use that trusted radar when you need to read another’s true intentions. This week your intuition will lead you to fertile lands.

The brighter you shine, the bigger the shadow and you are shining right now. Certain people may step in and events may occur that attempt to undermine you and cause you to question. It is therefore important to stay rooted to your truth. Somehow, someway everything will even out in your life, balance will eventually be restored as you seem to have what everybody wants and needs in their lives. Any kind of social activity is highlighted, the right people have a way of showing up and you will be feeling right at home with the attention that is flocking your way. It all brings out the best of your people skills, as you rise above any disharmony that is floating around you, able to see things for what they really are. One relationship may have reached the limits of where it can go in its current state; you could be mulling over the next phase this week. You are beginning to see others as well as your life more clearly now which will in itself give you more energy and drive, especially since you know better with what and who you are dealing with. There may also be someone that is entering your life whom you will feel able to trust instantly, and now you will know what to do with, who and why. A lifestyle change could be around the corner, be willing to take a chance if one lands in your lap this week.

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4 and line a muffin tray with paper liners. 2. Combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt in a large bowl. In a separate bowl mix together the milk, eggs, vegetable oil, honey and grated courgette. Add the liquid ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix – be careful not to overmix, you just need to make sure everything is incorporated.

3. Spoon the mixture into the cases, leaving a little space for the muffins to rise, and cover with the mixed seeds and oats. Bake for 25 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. 4. Cool for 5 minutes in the tray then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Walking

SPANISH By Valerie Mitchell

WEDNESDAY, September 4th 2013

Spanish people walk a lot. The older generation think nothing of striding forth to their country homes or to visit their children and grandchildren three, four or five kilometres away. The younger generation are walking rather than pay fees at the "gimnasio". I read somewhere recently that 75% of Spanish people walk more than 10 km a week. This may or may not be true but it perhaps explains the fact that there are so many ways to translate the word ‘walk’ in Spanish – andar, pasear, ir andando, dar una vuelta and dar una paseo are all ways of walking. There are more, but let’s just look at some stuff we can use. ¿Cómo vas a la playa? - How are you going to the beach? Voy andando - I'm walking Ir andando is to walk as a way of getting somewhere and we use the verb Ir in all its glorious irregularities. Fui al supermercado andando - I walked to the supermarket (literally – I went to the supermarket walking). Vamos a la playa andando - we are walking to the beach. So, while, ir andando is a means of getting somewhere, ir de paseo or pasear is more to take a stroll. Vamos de paseo. We go for a walk (a walk for the sake of walking). Damos un paseo translates in the same way. In the old days El Paseo was when people used to stroll around the town in the evening with a view to showing off one's finery and perhaps to match-making. And of course the Paseo Maritimo in seaside towns is the Promenade where people go for a stroll on the sea front. Dar una vuelta is similar to dar un paseo. It is a leisurely pursuit. Los domingos damos un paseo en el campo - On Sundays we go for a walk in the country. To distinguish between whether you are going to walk or go by car you would use Ir de pie or ir andando for walking and ir en coche or ir conduciendo for to drive. Voy de pie - I'm walking, Fui de pie - I walked, Vamos de pie - We are walking, Fuimos de pie - We walked Voy en coche I'm driving, Fui en coche - I drove. Vamos en coche - We're driving, Fuimos en coche - We drove Ya está - That's it Hasta la próxima - Until the next time Valerie

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Hi Calvin,

Ref. article in The News this week, could you advise how I can volumise my hair. It’s mid length, nicely shaped into my neck at the back but the top is flat! Would a light perm do it? I´m not keen on short layers, currently layers from top of my head reach to my ears. Am not great at blow drying it up either. Thanks, Ann Dear Ann,

A light perm can work very well for volume but as you are not great at blowdrying it could be more trouble than its worth. However soft the perm is, if left to dry on its own it is going to have

some amount of curl or wave.

Also at the moment it is very humid here and a lot of people tend to perspire though their scalp, so you will be continually fighting the wave again if this happens to you. If you decide to go the perm route I would personally leave it until the weather cools down.

Other alternatives are volumising products. There are shampoos and conditioners designed not to weigh the hair down and also volumising blowdry sprays and mousses as well as volumising hairsprays. Also new on the market is a volumising dust which is rubbed into the roots

after your hair is dry although this is hard to source here in Spain at the moment.

I hope this helps answer your question, I would personally try the volumising product route first and use the perm route as a last resort. Dear Calvin,

My husband is going really grey very quickly, having seen the adverts for "Just for Men" we were wondering how it works and why. Do you think it would be a good idea or are there any alternatives for a natural look? Edwina, Mijas Dear Edwina,

Having grown up with a "Just for Men" father I have seen the ups and downs of this product.

I have seen the devastation that a man can cause in a beautiful white bathroom and heard a mother moaning as she tries to restore it back to

Lords

what it was. Keep in mind anything it touches will stain including the skin, also it tends to leave a lingering smell on the hair. If you choose to start using this product please remember it will be a commitment every six weeks or so as you will get a regrowth and the only way to get rid of it is to cut it out or grow it out.

Always choose a shade lighter than you desire as it tends to go quite dark and then will look very unnatural. Here in Spain you are limited to the darker shades as they are catering for our Mediterranean friends.

My suggestion as an alternative is to introduce lowlights to the hair. This will not remove all the grey but would give more of a salt and pepper look which will look far more natural and, of course, you will not experience a regrowth. Dear Sue,

I having my eyelashes tinted but have always been nervous about the procedure. Is it safe and

how long does it last?

Shirley, Riveria del Sol

Dear Shirley,

If you have blonde or light brown eyelashes or darker lashes that are blonde at the ends this is ideal for you, you probably won't need to wear mascara or if you do you will be able to see your lashes more easily to apply it. Eyelash tints are made of vegetable dye so are completely safe to use. We protect the skin around the eyes with Vaseline to prevent any colour tinting the skin. The tint is then applied to the lashes and left to develop for a few minutes. The colour is permanent so will last until the eyelash naturally falls out. In fact you will even see a little regrowth as the lash grows. If you are in the sun a lot they can fade, so to keep them at their best I suggest repeating the procedure every 4-6 weeks. Dear Sue,

I have noticed my skin is looking tired. Would a facial be beneficial to me and could you

recommend what I should start with to make my skin look fresher? Pat, Alhaurin de la Torre Dear Pat,

As summer draws to a close our skins do start to lose their freshness and vitality. Most are dehydrated and need a good deep cleansing facial. The "hydradermie" facial by "Guinot' is the perfect solution for this. We can even add special serums to help tighten up the skin. A month from now will be the time for facial peels to rid the skin of all the dead cells it has accumulated. Peels aren't suitable to do while the sun is still so strong and I will cover this in more detail at the end of September. Sir David Frost dies aboard the QE2 as he was revving up to give one of his famous speeches

Hello, good evening and.... goodbye

… and he will be remembered fondly for his professionalism and being a “thoroughly nice man” Broadcaster Sir David Frost died, aged 74, of a heart attack on Saturday night on board the QE2 where he was due to give a speech. A graduate of Cambridge University, Sir David was born in Tenterden, Kent in the south of England. He was once secretary of Cambridge’s Footlights club where he met the likes of comedy greats such as Peter Cook, Graham Chapman and John Bird. Many will remember him for his catchphrase: “Hello, good evening and welcome,” or perhaps more so for his interview with former US President

Richard Nixon which saw Nixon declare: “I let my country down” – which was the nearest he ever came to an apology to his people. Their exchanges were eventually made into the film Frost/Nixon – based on a play – which saw Michael Sheen portray Sir David Frost to Frank Langella's Nixon. Sir David himself appeared at the premiere of the film in 2008. He was a journalist, comedy writer and TV presenter and interviewer. He was the head man of Breakfast With Frost and The Frost Report for ITV, as well as presenting the satirical

That Was The Week That Was. One of The Frost Report's most enduring pieces was the "class sketch", featuring Cleese, Barker and Corbett. The Frost Programme for ITV followed, which saw Sir David move away from comedy into in-depth interviews with political figures, royalty and celebrities. It was on this programme that he had a terse interview with then prime minister Margaret Thatcher over the sinking of the Argentine cruiser Belgrano during the Falklands conflict. She was utterly furious with

him – and it showed when it was aired on TV! A statement said: "His family are devastated and ask for privacy at this difficult time. A family funeral will be held in the near future and details of a memorial service will be announced in due course." Prime Minister David Cameron said: "Sir David was an extraordinary man, with charm, wit, talent, intelligence and warmth in equal measure. He made a huge impact on television and politics." Playwright Peter Morgan said: "He was a legendary broadcasting figure and a member of the British broadcasting landscape

for two generations and in many ways his success was very un-English. He was a pioneer. He combined being a satirist and someone who one

satirised. It was an extraordinary, fourdimensional, vivid career ... and he was a great lunch."

Sir David Frost

The end of an era of When is a crisis not radio broadcasting a crisis? David Lewis Jacobs was born into a Jewish family in Streatham Hall, London in 1926. His was a fairly well-to-do family, the family with their own chauffeur and maid. However, as the war progressed the family fell on harder times and his mother, Jeanette, took in dressmaking. Conscripted in 1944, Jacobs’ first taste of broadcasting was on Radio SEAC in Ceylon during his service with the Royal Navy and he became Assistant Station Director. Joining the BBC Overseas Service in 1947 he recalled a time when the job wasn’t being taken too seriously. The equally famous Jean

Metcalfe was seen through the window of his broadcasting box wearing a fire guard helmet and Jack De Manio pouring a bucket of water over her head. The broadcast ended with everyone rolling around with laughter!

He hosted numerous programmes including Juke Box Jury from 1958 to 1967 and Any Questions? from 1967 to 1983. In 1963 a special edition of Juke Box Jury with the Beatles at the Liverpool Empire reached an audience of 24 million.

Possibly somewhat less known is the fact that he was the first presenter of Come Dancing from which

our present Strictly Come Dancing has become a spin off.

He also did significant charity work for the Stars Organisation For Spastics, the RSPCA and many other organisations. In 1975, Jacobs was voted Radio Personality Of The Year, and in 1984 he received a Sony award for his outstanding contribution to radio.

His final David Jacobs Collection went out last month, when he announced that he was stepping down, suffering from liver cancer and Parkinson’s disease.

Poor old Michael Douglas, 68, told reporters in Berlin at the premier of his Liberace film, Behind The Candelabra that his marriage to 43-year-old Catherine Zeta Jones was not in crisis but that they are just having a “temporary separation” from their marriage that took place in 2000. Asked about the split, he replied: "I have a crisis at home?

No, I think the press has a crisis. We are fine. My wife and I are fine. We take a temporary separation – but the press, it gives you stuff to write about." In the meantime, Zeta-Jones’ camp said that the couple were "taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage". Well, if that isn’t a crisis, we’d like to know what he thinks is! The couple,

who have two children, were last photographed together in April.

Opinion

Margaret Spencer-Brooks Recently on British TV News we have heard of the appalling state of N.H.S. hospitals and Emergency Units. There has even been a suggestion that patients should be charged for treatment according to income, in order to improve conditions. But the patients have already paid, by their Social Security deductions. Within the EU economy Spain is a “poor relation”, but it has its priorities right. Last week after days of increasing discomfort, I went to the local Ambulatorio, where I was checked thoroughly in Urgencias but was told that they only had limited equipment so were sending me to University Hospital in Malaga. I was put into an ambulance and

dispatched without delay. On arrival I was placed in a wheelchair and immediately taken from one department to another for the appropriate tests – ECG, XRay etc. Nowhere in the corridors through which we passed were there patients lying on trollies, awaiting vacant beds, as in England. I progressed steadily from one department to the next and finally to a ward. It was fairly full but still had space for admissions. It was clean, well equipped and staffed by sufficient nurses and orderlies for patient numbers. Every call was promptly attended. Cleaners operated twice a day. Good meals were served. Visitors were admitted for one hour, twice daily. It

June Holmes I have just finished reading Kym's summary of Jamie Oliver’s new food programme and when I got to the bit about the trollies in the UK coming out of Asda and Aldi packed with ready meals etc I really had to smile. You don't have to go to the UK to see this

was busy but not chaotic. Staff were patient and courteous, even with difficult elderly patients. Florence Nightingale would have approved. If Spain can uphold its basic care standards in a recession, surely others can do so too. Incidentally, although I was the only non-Spaniard it made no difference. Care was taken to ensure that I understood everything said to me. Eventually, I was returned to my home by ambulance. Spain can be proud of its health service. On a personal note, may I thank my Danish neighbour who visited, fetched, made phone calls, fed my pets and checked my house. She says: “That’s what neighbours are for.”

and frozen and then shipped back. The fresh produce in Spain is fabulous and the local markets need our support. If you are wondering what I am doing in Iceland – Yorkshire tea bags!

Puebla Aida the mountains from our terrace. We will try and get the photos printed and if you are interested we will send them to you. Editor says: I’m sure Ken would be most interested in them so, please do send them into us.

Brian Johnston by email The Labour Party's Electoral Commission is having a laugh, since they had 13 years in office and did not annul the 15 years residents abroad rule which prevents us expats from voting and the Tory/Lib's are just as ineffective regarding this archaic rule.

The 60% of French expats they mentioned are NOT disenfranchised like us and

this is why only 1% of British Expats are registered to vote.

Do some of us have to chain ourselves to Downing Street railings or jump in front of the Queen's racehorse? ! This is 2013 --- politicians please stop thinking in the dark ages.

All About The Moon

T

The most prominent object in the night sky is our Moon. It has become such a familiar face that we sometimes forget that it is another body out in space.

he Moon is our closest neighbour, its distance to the Earth varies between 221,456 and 252,711 miles but it is gradually moving away from us by about 4cm per year. The Apollo 15 astronauts left a special reflector on the surface of the Moon in 1972 and ever since then astronomers have been using a high-powered laser beam to measure its distance. It is now 170 cm further away than when the astronauts were there!

N

obody is really sure where the Moon came from. The most likely theory is that another planet about the size of Mars crashed into the Earth about four and a half billion years ago and the debris from both the Earth and the other planet sprayed out into space to condense into the Moon. Rock samples brought back by the Apollo astronauts seem to support this latest theory.

T

he Moon spins, but it spins at exactly the same rate that it orbits the Earth so it keeps one side constantly facing toward us. It travels around the Earth at slightly over 1km per second and during the course of an evening its motion can be seen quite clearly as it passes amongst the stars. It travels a distance equal to its own radius about every 29 minutes.

W

hen you look at the Moon from night to night it is its changing phases that are the most noticeable feature. Pink Floyd sang about the ‘dark side of the Moon’; but there isn’t a dark side to the Moon. The far side, which we never see, receives just as much sunlight as the near side. When the Moon is between the Sun and Earth then the far side is fully lit up and our side is in shadow. As the Moon begins its journey around the Earth then our side receives more light and the varying phases are created until it is directly on the opposite side to the Sun and so the face is fully lit and we see a full Moon.

T

he dark areas that you can see are called the ‘seas’ although they are not oceans of water. It is just that early astronomers who didn’t have telescopes presumed that they must be areas filled with water and so the name stuck. The seas were created millions of years ago when the Moon was still in a molten lava-like state and the solar system was littered with pieces of rock floating through space. The Moon was struck by some really big pieces that caused the molten insides to spew out onto the surface filling in the impact areas then cooled. So the dark seas are the insides of the Moon while the lighter areas are the Moon’s real surface.

T

he far side of the Moon (pictured) is almost completely free of the darker seas but is covered much more with smaller impact craters. And because the Moon has no atmosphere with wind or rain then the scars from these impacts will remain intact for eternity.

L

ook carefully at the lower central part of the Full Moon and you will see a giant crater called Tycho. It was created about 100 million years ago when a giant asteroid crashed into the Moon. The ejector streaks can be seen coming from it and spreading almost right across the Moon’s face. To give you some idea of scale this crater is 50 miles wide and 3 miles deep.

A

lthough the full Moon appears very bright in the sky, Moon rock is really quite dark in colour and has about the same reflectance as a piece of coal.

T

here is water on the Moon, but it is frozen into the soil at the bottom of very deep craters at the north and south poles where sunlight never penetrates.

I

t takes 27 days and 7 hours for the Moon to complete one orbit around the Earth but the time between successive Full Moons is 29 days and 12 hours. This is because the Earth has moved about 1/12th further along its own orbit and so the Moon has to travel just that bit further to appear on the opposite side to the Sun.

A O H

compass will not work on the Moon as it has no magnetic field.

h, and of course the Full Moon turns people into Werewolves! appy Stargazing!

Lorenzo edges thriller Daniel Ricciardo: to drive Marc Marquez was hoping for his fifth win on the bounce especially since he had clinched his third pole position in five race meetings, but during race day warm up Marquez slid into the gravel almost crashing into a group of stewards who were attending the stricken bike of Crutchlow. It was later announced that Marquez would be docked two points for failing to slow down for yellow flags. Marquez dislocated his left shoulder in the fall but after being given the green light in the circuit Medical Centre, the 20year-old Repsol Honda Team rider lined up in pole position from Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo and Tech3’s Cal Crutchlow. The Mallorcan Lorenzo made another strong start and dived into the lead at Copse corner. In a near repeat performance of Brno last weekend, he proceeded to hold off both Repsol Honda Team riders for almost the whole race. Marquez had other ideas though and seized the advantage at Brooklands just over two laps from home, only for Lorenzo to retake the lead as he confidently outbraked his opponent at Vale. On the final lap, Marquez again grabbed the advantage at Brooklands, before Lorenzo re-passed in a confident move at Luffield – there was contact between the two as Lorenzo squeezed his Yamaha back in front. The leading duo crossed the finish line separated by just 81 thousandths of a second. It also meant that Silverstone continued the pattern from Brno of witnessing the closest finish of the season so far. Struggling for rear grip, Pedrosa was a further one and a half seconds behind, having been unable to take advantage of the battling pair in front of him.

Just missing out on a podium in fourth place was Valentino Rossi who, having dropped back after

for Red Bull next season World champions Red Bull have chosen Daniel Ricciardo to replace Mark Webber in the team next season. The Australian, 24, who has driven for Red Bull junior team Toro Rosso for the last two seasons, will partner triple world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Jorge Lorenzo just holds off Marc Marquez

his strong start, had become involved in yet another exciting battle with Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista who managed fifth, while LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl finished in sixth place. Having missed his home race in 2011 before starting at the back in 2012, Cal Crutchlow had hoped for a much stronger Silverstone weekend in 2013. He crashed twice on Saturday and again in Sunday’s warm-up, then paid the price for a poor getaway as the Tech3 rider plummeted from

third to sixth at the start. He would fall back to his eventual finishing position of seventh when the charging Bautista – who had lined up eighth on the grid – overtook at the end of Lap 1. Crutchlow’s teammate Bradley Smith again found himself dicing with the pair of Ducati Team riders, but was ultimately passed by Nicky Hayden for eighth place. Smith would end the day ninth, while Andrea Dovizioso crashed out on the penultimate lap. By Mike Kerrigan

Red Bull chose Ricciardo over former world champion Kimi Raikkonen. Ricciardo said: "Obviously there's a lot of excitement running through me.

"Since joining F1 in 2011, I hoped this would happen and over time the belief in me has grown." The decision was widely expected after Webber, who is leaving F1 to join Porsche in sportscar racing next season, made it clear at the last grand prix in Belgium that the team had already decided to promote Ricciardo. Team

principal

Christian Horner said Ricciardo was "very talented, committed, has great attitude and in the end it was a very logical choice".

Horner added in a team statement: "He's got all the attributes that are required to drive for our team. He's got a great natural ability, he's a good personality and a

great guy to work with.

"Daniel knows what the team expects. He'll learn quickly and it's very much a medium- to longterm view that we're taking in developing him.

"The seat within the team is a wonderful opportunity and I think he's going to be a big star of the future."

Derby day draw Sevilla 2 - Malaga 2

C.O.G.S play at Atalaya The smallest turn out of only fourteen players made the trip to Atalaya Golf, as a lot of members are away at this time of year. The course was in very good condition and is one of the longest in Spain. It was the last time that Terry Birtles was playing with us as he is returning back to the U.K. for a while. All the members wish him and his family a safe journey home and good luck for the future. Also our Captain Joe King was unable to play due to ill health, we all wish him a speedy recovery. Nearest the pin on hole 16 Charles Randell, the longest drive on hole 6 Lee Ramayon. The two’s competition was won by Ian Holden. The team competition with 25.5 average score was won by Ian Holden, Gerry Owens, Sav Ramayon and

Lee Ramayon.

In the day’s main competition third place with 27 points on count back was Dave Wrigglesworth, in second place with 33 points was John Bamber and in first place with 34 points was Hiekki Kontinnen (pictured above L to R with Captain Joe King on the far right). In last place and the winner of the wooden spoon was me again. Come back Mike Brian, please! All the members would like to thank Andy Macfarlane our Secretary and John Bamber our Treasurer for arranging the outing and Elaine of Lainey’s for supplying the food.

Malaga travelled the short distance across Andalucia to take on their rivals Sevilla on Sunday evening. The game was frantic throughout and Malaga started well but it was Sevilla who had the first chance after 5 minutes, with Perotti right footing a shot from the right side of the box which was saved by Caballero. Three minutes later Malaga´s Morales had a left footed shot saved, and Fabrice went close after being set up by Roque Santa Cruz. Becca, for Sevilla then struck the woodwork from a rebound, after Caballero had kept out an effort from Alberto Moreno. Centre back Cala missed a glorious chance skying the ball high over the bar following a cross from Gameiro. Sevilla were made to pay for that miss just before half time as Pedro Morales right footed a shot from outside the box to the bottom left corner following a fast break from Duda, giving the visitors the lead. But just a minute from half time Stephane Mbia who joined Sevilla from QPR last week crossed the ball for Gameiro to head home. Replays show that he was offside, but this was not given and the teams went into the break one apiece. Malaga made a half time substitution with Portillo replacing the injured goalscorer Morales, and

Portillo had a header saved after 57 minutes following a cross by Fabrice. Rakitic for Sevilla and Duda for Malaga went on to have chances but neither found the back of the net. With 25 minutes of the game left it was Malaga who went ahead. Sergi Darder with a bursting run found Santa Cruz who shot first time into the bottom corner beyond Varas. The lead only lasted 3 minutes as Gameiro took advantage of a poor clearance by Sergio Sanchez and headed the ball past Caballero. With six minutes remaining Sevilla thought they had taken all three points as Iborra headed the ball into the bottom corner of the net only to be ruled out for offside. The drama continued, as Duda was shown a straight red card in the dying seconds for a foul on Vitolo. So the points were shared between the two Andalucian rivals which takes Malaga to 18th in the league after three tough opening games to the season. We now have a break for the International fixtures which will see many Malaga players playing for their respective countries. On Sunday 15th, Malaga are back at La Rosaleda to take on Rayo Vallacano at 7pm. Tickets starting from €22. Report by Danielle Moss

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips

This week we have a question about Omaha which is my preferred game in poker. It is the same as Holdem except each player is dealt 4 hole cards instead of 2 and you must use 3 from the board and 2 from your hole cards to complete your 5 card hand.

Tom emailed to ask about playing AA/KK in Omaha as he seems to lose with these hands. Unlike Holdem, in Omaha AA/KK is not a great starting hand as is any pair, because 2 pair and trips are very common, straights and flushes win regularly so you need to hit

a full house to be confident. The best starting hand is AA/KK suited because we have 2 pair and 2 nut flush draws. With this hand you would raise but, because of the nature of the game, it is normally played pot limit so multiway pots are often seen. With your 4 hole cards you only want to enter a pot when you can make 2 or 3 starting hands, here is an example; Ah/Qh/Ks/10s. This is a very good hand to see a flop with as we have the Broadway draw AKQJ10, the nut heart flush draw and the 2nd best spade draw. When the the flop comes we do need to see some draws to bet out if the board is dry slow down. Omaha is not a good game for bluffs. However, let’s say you’re on the button and there is a flush draw on the flop and you want to represent this, we need to bet the flop and should the draw hit the turn we can fire again to rep the flush.

What we have to

remember in Omaha every street brings a new draw, we may have a set on the flop and yes we have to bet it to defend it, but we must remember that a pair and a set at Omaha is weak, so do not start putting too many chips in the pot if there are draws such as straights and flushes. If you bet the flop with a set and you get called with a draw on the board, by all means be aggressive but if you think they have you beat, fold!

Huddersfield Giants win league leaders’ Shield Huddersfield Giants secured the League Leaders' Shield with a 40-0 win over Wakefield Wildcats. The Giants ran in seven tries, including two apiece for Jason Chan and Jermaine McGillvary, to ensure they will go into the Super League play-offs as top seeds.

Huddersfield, who last finished top of the league in 1932, became only the sixth winners of the shield and, after collecting their first silverware of the Super League era, will now go in search of their first championship win since 1962.

Wakefield, who gave a

full debut to 20-year-old Bobbie Goulding, son of the former St Helens and Great Britain scrum-half of the same name, never looked capable of spoiling the party.

Shaun Lunt, who has played a crucial role in the Giants' successful season on his return form Leeds, put the seal on an impressive display with a last-minute try, with Brough kicking his sixth goal from seven attempts.

Demichelis reunites with Pellegrini Manchester City have signed Atletico Madrid defender Martin Demichelis for a reported £4.2m. Demichelis, 32, told City's website: "I am delighted to have joined City because I am still hungry for success and want to improve." The Argentina international only joined the Spanish side from Malaga on a free transfer in July. City need defensive cover with captain Vincent Kompany

sidelined for several weeks with a groin injury. Demichelis played under City boss Manuel Pellegrini at Malaga and River Plate and featured at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He said "I have been in Europe for 11 years now and this was a great chance for me to play in the Premier League with such a big club. I don't think there'll be any problems in adjusting to life here."

Alonso to buy Spanish cycling team

Former Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has agreed to buy the Euskaltel Euskadi cycling team. The Spaniard, 32, who drives for Ferrari, announced on his website that he had "reached an initial agreement to buy the team and so avoid its demise". The team, based in the Basque Country, was due to fold at the end of the season after losing its sponsors. Alonso said "transparency and 'zero tolerance' (on doping) would be the fundamental pillars" of the new team.

Bale’s dream is finally a Reality Gareth Bale was presented to thousands of fans at the Bernabeu stadium following his record £85m transfer The 24-year-old posed next to the club's president Florentino Perez with his new white number 11 shirt while around 20,000 fans in the stadium cheered, clapped and took photos. Real had unearthed a picture of Bale wearing a club shirt as a child. The Wales international successfully passed his medical before signing a six-year contract with the Spanish giants, where he will link up with Cristiano Ronaldo, who in 2009

became the most expensive player in the world when Real signed him from Manchester United for £80m. Wearing a sharp black suit, white shirt and black tie, Bale listened to a translation as Perez introduced him and described him as an "exceptional footballer". "Bale's determination made it possible for him to be here today," Perez said, his speech regularly interrupted by cheers. "The moment he dreamed of as a child has arrived.

This is your stadium, this is your shield and these are your fans. This is your home." Bale spoke to his new supporters, including a message in Spanish where he said: "Hello, it's a dream for me to play for Real Madrid. Thank you for the great welcome. Go Madrid!" He then put his strip on and took to the pitch to do keepy-uppies and kick footballs into the excited crowd. Coach Carlo Ancelotti can deploy his new player in a formidable attacking

trio with Portugal forward Ronaldo and France striker Karim Benzema as Real attempt to wrest the Spanish title back from arch rivals

Barcelona. Bale could make his debut after the international break in Real's La Liga match at Villarreal on Saturday September 14th.

Men’s eight win world title A historic victory for the men's eight was a brilliant end to an encouraging World Championships for Great Britain in Chungju, South Korea. It also vindicated head coach Jurgen Grobler's decision to put all of Britain's best rowers in the men's eight for the first time in his career. The crew didn't even reach the medal podium at the last World Cup in Lucerne, but after a really tough training camp they can now call themselves world champions – the first time a British men's eight has been able to do that.
