Mijas Council denounces old people’s 'home'

The discovery of two elderly Dutch women living in wood cabins on a plot of land in Valtocado that did not meet the minimum conditions of hygiene last week led Mijas Council to denounce the "home" in a local court and to call on the Junta de Andalucia to inspect the site.

Just as the puppy was doing really well, he decided to chase another cat and did his leg in again! Puppies and kids almost never do as they’re told – who’d have ‘em?! I have just been shown a photograph of him that was taken the first time I brought him into the office and, it’s true what they say, when you’re with them all the time, you can’t see the changes. Jackson has gone from something that looked like a cross between a rat and a Tasmanian devil with hardly any hair into a positive prince among dogs! This week has, once again been a very busy one. On Thursday we took time out to go for lunch at Bar el Rio where we had some of the tastiest tapas I’ve had for a long time so I’ve written a review of it on page 19. Then on Friday evening we went to see Mike Sterling entertaining everyone up here in Coin. The venue, which was a garden at the back of a local Venta with a stage, was packed with over 200 people and the show was fantastic. You

Record drop in Tourism figures up trade deficit Just under eight million foreign tourists chose Spain for their summer vacation in July – a 3.2 percent rise compared to the same month last year.

Spain’s trade deficit fell by 68.8 percent in the first half of 2013 to €5.8 billion, the Economy Ministry announced last week.

sharply lower trade deficit was due to a 9.5 per cent increase in the total number of exporting companies, as well as to their improved competitiveness and their greater ability to reach new markets, including ones outside the euro zone.

Exports were valued at €118.7 billion, up 8 per cent from the same sixmonth period of 2012, while imports fell 3.2 per cent to €124.5 billion, Secretary of State for Trade Jaime García-Legaz said.

Imports were down “in part” due to weakness in internal demand as a result of the high unemployment rate, although he added that import substitution had also played a role.

“Spain had not exported that much since 1971,” he added. He said the

Mayor stays on after Business advice to pro-Franco comment woo back viewers The mayor of Baralla, a small town in Lugo province, Galicia, will not be stepping down, despite having said that people who were condemned to death during the Franco dictatorship “would have deserved it”. At a meeting last week, councillors in Baralla voted eight-tothree in favour of Mayor Manuel González Capón. The eight votes came from his Partido Popular (PP), while the three votes calling for him to resign came from the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) and the Socialist Party. Inside the town hall, dozens of people turned out in support of the mayor, but around 100 people were outside, calling for him to resign.

Following the vote, the mayor said: “Although I am not proud of what I said, let’s be clear about that, I feel grateful for the support, which is giving me the will and the strength to keep working.”

The BNG spokesman on the council, Xosé Manuel Becerra has urged

regional premier Alberto Núñez Feijoo (PP), to “make it clear whether they accept the mayor’s statements.” “If he doesn’t accept them then he has to make him resign. A mayor who supports Francoism cannot continue in the chair,” he added.

In an attempt to halt a dropping audience share which reached a record low in June – 9.6 per cent – State broadcaster TVE1 is trying out a new programme to substitute its afternoon soap operas. "Entre todos" (Between everyone), went on the air for the first time at 4.15 pm on Monday August 26th. The objective is to introduce people seeking help, mainly entrepreneurs, and ask the audience to help make their dreams come true. Most will need financial help to get their projects off the ground, but the programme's presenter, Toñi Moreno, told journalists: "The important thing is not to hand over a fish, but to give them a fishing rod."

The format is for a team of reporters to travel around the country, talking to people who need help, while a group of experts offers advice from the studio. These experts

This change in the afternoon line-up indicates a move away from soap operas. Ever since Falcon Crest was first shown on TVE1 in the mid-1980s, soaps have been a popular format, with South American telenovelas, and then home-grown Spanish dramas, building

loyal fan bases.

But since TVE1 dropped advertising a couple of years back, financial difficulties forced it to sell the rights to its highly successful soap, Amar en tiempos revueltos (Love in troubled times), to Antena 3, which broadcasts it under a different name. Only time will tell if this radical change in programming strategy will turn TVE1's fortunes around.

Alleviating a hungry summer Regional governments throughout the country have opened education centres during the summer break to provide children from low-income families with a decent meal. Child poverty is on the increase, made worse, according to parent-student organisations such as Ceapa and Concapa, by regional government spending cuts of up to 50 per cent. And the three-month summer break meant that many families are unable to provide for their children. However, some regional governments have come up with some innovative ways to help them.

The Onésimo Redondo, one of the oldest elementary schools in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, set up a summer programme ostensibly to offer pupils an immersion course in English, but in reality to provide the growing numbers of children from poorer families with at

least one hot meal a day.

The education department of the Canary Islands says that it has provided meals for at least 12,000 children. It is now studying how to offer breakfasts for school students when the new academic year resumes in September. At 40 per cent, the Canary Islands has one of the highest unemployment levels in Spain, with child poverty at around 30 per cent of the population; a third higher than the EU average. The Catalan and Andalusian regional governments have organised urban summer camps, opening schools on a daily basis to provide activities for children, and more importantly, a proper meal. This spares their parents the indignity of taking their children to a charity-run soup kitchen. The Junta de Andalucia's education and social services departments have

also implemented a €1.6 million-euro programme in conjunction with local councils and charities in 57 schools throughout the region over the course of the summer, which has provided three meals a day for up to 4,000 children.

In Extremadura, one of the country's poorest regions, funding has been found for some 2,500 meals in 18 schools in eight towns and cities in July and August. As in Andalusia, the free meals were offered within the context of summer camps and day centres, with children being given a bag with snacks to see them over to the next day.

Catalonia is one of the few regions to provide detailed figures on child poverty. In Barcelona, in June, 2,865 children were detected as suffering from malnutrition: children who don't eat breakfast, who don't eat fruit, and who eat a bowl of pasta in the evening if they are lucky. Not all of Spain's regions are prepared to recognise the scale of the problem. The education departments in the cities of Castellón and Alicante, run by the Partido Popular, told one national newspaper that they had not "received specific requests" for help from parents unable to feed their school-age children over the summer.

Waiting lists hit historical highs

A record number of people are currently awaiting surgery – 571,395, a 6.4 per cent increase in a little over a year – as a result of budgetary restrictions and the laying off of healthcare personnel. Average waiting times have also gone up from 76 days to 100, the worst figures since the Health ministry started keeping records of this data in 2004. in addition, the number of patients waiting more than six months to be admitted to hospital has risen seven per cent, despite this timeframe being the maximum permitted by law for certain types of procedure. in madrid, waiting lists have grown by a record 17.5 per cent, which regional health chief Javier Fernández-Lasquetty directly attributed to strikes by health workers against privatisation in the region's service.

No room for women in the armed forces

Figures released by the defence ministry's Equality Observatory show there are still limits for women wishing to join the armed forces, even though all obstacles were officially removed in 1999 – women were able to join combat units, for example, and in theory, a woman could become the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. But in fact, women can only join certain units or apply for a limited number of posts. Also, some limitations are imposed on women that do not apply to men: a female officer serving in a unit cannot have either an immediate superior or inferior officer of the same sex.

World News New safety measures for Venice canals

The authorities in Venice have set out proposals to make navigation safer on the city's main waterway after a German tourist died in a crash last week.

They aim to regulate traffic flow on the heavily congested Grand Canal, and include plans to carry out checks for drug use by gondoliers, Venice Mayor Giorgio Orsoni said on Monday. A 50-year-old German man died after his gondola collided with a "vaporetto", or public water bus, on August 17th. Police said traces of cocaine were found in the bloodstream of

the gondolier. Mayor Orsoni said gondolas may only be allowed to operate at certain times of the day after morning rush hour, adding that the city council was assessing the possibility of widening narrow passageways by removing structures such as small docks. The council also hopes to introduce a system of checking for drug and alcohol abuse by those

in charge of boats and are looking into proposals to ban captains from using hand-held devices whilst navigating the canals. On any given day, there is continual activity on the Grand Canal, with so many small craft of all kinds jostling and manoeuvring on the waters that it can be dangerous.

Jaochim Vogel and his

family were thrown into the water after their gondola collided with the water bus. His three-year-old daughter was treated in hospital for head injuries. Mr Vogel died after getting crushed between the two vehicles. An association of gondoliers, which oversees training and issues limited licences, is also engaged in discussions on safety and accident prevention.

Mubarak in court Students all fail days after release entrance exam

The former Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, appeared in court on Sunday, three days after being released from prison and placed under house arrest. He is facing a retrial on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising. He sat in the defendants' cage along with his two sons, the former interior minister, and six security chiefs. Mr Mubarak appeared in the dock inside the highsecurity courtroom sitting in a wheelchair, after being flown by helicopter to the court from a military hospital where he

has been held under house arrest since his release from prison last Thursday. The former president and his sons have been cleared of separate charges of corruption because of the statute of limitations. In January 2013, the Court of Cassation accepted appeals against their convictions and ordered a retrial.

The original trial judge had said there was no evidence linking Mr Mubarak to the shooting of protesters.

Liberia's education minister, Etmonia DavidTarpeh, said on Monday that she finds it hard to believe that not a single candidate passed this year's university admission exam.

Nearly 25,000 schoolleavers failed the test for admission to the University of Liberia, one of two state-run universities. A university official said the students lacked enthusiasm and did not have a basic grasp of English.

Liberia is recovering from a brutal civil war that ended a decade ago,

and President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a Nobel peace laureate, recently acknowledged that the education system was still in a "in a mess".

However, this is the first time that every single student who wrote the exam for a fee of £16 has failed. It means that the overcrowded university will not have any new first-year students when it reopens next month for the academic year. Students said the result was unbelievable and their dreams had been shattered.

Police said on Monday that they have found the body of Sean Cole, 26, who was snatched by a crocodile as he swam in a river in the Northern Territory during a birthday party. Police said he ignored signs to stay out of the water at a popular camping ground at Mary river, which has one of the highest crocodile populations in the area. Senior Sergeant geoff Bahnert said: "The Mary river is known worldwide to have the greatest saturation of adult saltwater crocodiles in the world. You don't swim in the Mary river." At least four crocodiles have been shot in the area following the incident, including one believed to be responsible the attack on Mr Cole. Police raid international drug factories

Police have seized ecstasy pills and chemicals used to make drugs, worth an estimated street value of €1.3bn. Nine men and two women were arrested and charged with possessing, manufacturing and trafficking drugs. The suspects, from Belgium, Turkey and Poland, were part of an international criminal group, police said. Buildings have also been searched in the Netherlands and Poland. Two laboratories and warehouses were used to manufacture the drugs and false walls had been used to try to avoid detection, police said. The biggest laboratory was found at a farm warehouse in a wooded area near Chimay in southern Belgium. Chimay Mayor Francoise Fassiaux said she was shocked by the discovery, complaining rural areas "are no longer protected from serious crime".

Woman settles $105,000 parking fine

A Chicago woman has settled $105,000 in parking fines amassed after her car was abandoned by her ex-boyfriend at O'Hare airport in 2009. The vehicle accumulated 678 tickets before it was finally towed last year. Jennifer Fitzgerald said she had been unable to gain access to the car park, and continued to receive tickets even after the state of Illinois revoked the car's licence plates. Ms Fitzgerald sued the city to clear the tickets and penalties, and finally settled with the city out of court for $4,500. Under the terms of the settlement, her ex-boyfriend will reimburse her $1,600, with Ms Fitzgerald paying the rest on a monthly plan.

UN inspectors renew 360 pitbulls chemical attack probe rescued UN chemical weapons inspectors on Tuesday started a second day of investigations into last week's attacks in Damascus, after coming under sniper fire as they tried to visit an area west of the city on Monday.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the shooting and asked the UN team in Syria to register a complaint. Medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres said three hospitals it supports in the Damascus area had treated about 3,600 patients with "neurotoxic symptoms" last Wednesday, of whom 355 died.

In the most forceful US reaction yet, US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday there was there was "undeniable" evidence of a chemical attack. He said the delay in allowing UN inspectors to the sites was a sign the Syrian government had something to hide. Mr Kerry added Washington had additional information about the attacks which would be

made public in the days ahead.

US officials said there was "little doubt" that President Bashar alAssad's government was to blame. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem replied on Tuesday that he rejects "utterly and completely" that Syrian government forces used chemical weapons. Mr Muallem said UN weapons inspectors had been unable to go to a second site because they were stopped by rebels.

The US and its allies are considering military strikes on Syria, although Russia – Syria's ally – has warned against this. Washington has recently bolstered its naval presence in the eastern Mediterranean and military leaders from the US, UK and their allies have convened a meeting in Jordan. Analysts believe the most likely US action would be sea-launched cruise missiles targeting Syrian military

installations. The UN Security Council is divided, with Russia and China opposing military intervention and the UK and France warning that the UN could be bypassed if there was "great humanitarian need".

The UN says more than 100,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Assad began more than two years ago. The conflict has produced more than 1.7 million registered refugees.

China confirms arrest of Briton

Police in China have confirmed the arrest of a British investigator and his wife over the alleged illegal trafficking of personal data.

The state-run Xinhua news agency reported on Monday that Peter Humphrey and his American wife, Yu Yingzeng, who were arrested on August 16th, broke the law on at least 10 occasions.

Mr Humphrey, 57, is the founder of ChinaWhys, a risk management firm that provides services to multinationals. He is also a former journalist. According to the company's website, it

specialises in "discreet risk mitigation solutions, consulting and investigation services to corporate clients in matters of high sensitivity across Greater China and the Asia Pacific". His wife, Yu Yingzeng, 60, is the firm's general manager.

Police told state media that the couple sold personal information, which included addresses, family members and car and home ownership records, to clients through research companies. UK diplomats confirmed Mr Humphrey's arrest last week, but gave no details of the allegations. One of Mr Humphrey's

clients was reportedly the British pharmaceutical firm, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Last month, GSK was accused by Chinese authorities of directing up to £320 million through travel agencies to facilitate bribes to

doctors and officials.

Several GSK employees have been detained over the last few weeks. The firm said it would fully cooperate with Chinese authorities.

Authorities said on Monday that the malnourished and mistreated dogs were recovered along with $500,000 in raids on Friday in Alabama and Georgia. US Attorney George Beck said bets on a single dog fight had risen as high as $200,000.

Mr Beck said the number of dogs seized in the case "shows how extensive this underworld of dog fighting is". He told a news conference on Monday: "I believe if Dante were alive today and rewriting the Inferno that the lowest places in hell would be reserved for

those who commit cruelty to our animals and to our children." Sheriff David Sutton of Coffee County, Alabama, said the dogs at one home were covered in fleas and chained to heavy car parts.

Other officials said some pitbulls were so malnourished their ribs protruded or had bad wounds that required emergency care. Representatives from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States said the groups were caring for the animals. The dogs will be kept as evidence as the cases are tried, but the groups said they hoped eventually to retrain the dogs and place them in new homes.

San Francisco on alert A huge fire in and around California's Yosemite National Park has continued to spread and now covers almost 230 sq miles, officials said on Monday. The Rim Fire was raining ash on a key reservoir that supplies water and hydro-electric power to San Francisco. City officials said they are moving water to lower reservoirs and monitoring supplies for contamination.

The blaze is also threatening thousands of homes and some of California's renowned giant sequoia trees. Officials said the fire was 15% contained on Monday after burning for more than a week – up from 2% containment on Friday. Strong winds are making the fires more difficult to control. The blaze began on August 17th in the Stanislaus National Forest but the cause is still unknown. Some 2,800 firefighters are tackling the flames in

difficult terrain.

Evacuations, some voluntary and some mandatory, are taking place. Despite the threat to some 5,000 homes, only a few have been destroyed. California Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency for San Francisco 150 miles away as the blaze is also threatening power lines that bring electricity to the city.

The blaze reached the park's backcountry at Lake Eleanor on Friday, but it remains some 20 miles away from Yosemite's main tourist area. Park Authorities said they have no plans to close the attraction as most of Yosemite, which hosts up to 15,000 visitors a day in the summer, is unaffected by the fire. The Rim Fire is one of 50 major wildfires burning in the western US. Lack of rain and snow have made it a bad year, with 5,700 fires being tackled so far.

Four die in helicopter crash Four people who worked in the offshore oil industry lost their lives when their Super Puma helicopter owned by Eurocopters crashed into the seas off Shetland on Friday evening.

The helicopter was carrying 16 passengers and two crew from the Borgsten Dolphin platform to Sumburgh airport on the southern tip of the main Shetland Island and it is hoped that the recovery of the craft’s black box will determine what went wrong. Parts of the aircraft were recovered and will be examined by a team from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch. Senior management from the company that owned the helicopter have already arrived in Aberdeen to where the bodies have been returned.

Tributes have been paid to the victims, named as Duncan Munro, 46, from Bishop Auckland, County

Durham; George Allison, 57, from Winchester, Hampshire; Sarah Darnley, 45, from Elgin in the Highlands; and 59year-old Gary McCrossan, from Inverness. It was reported that some of the survivors were lucky as they were washed nearer the shore by the tides, making it easier for rescue services to find them.

Guillaume Faury, Eurocopter's chief executive, said: "All of us at Eurocopter are deeply saddened by this accident. This is a tragedy for all of us. We express our deepest sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of those who lost their lives. Our thoughts are with all those affected, including the workforce in the North Sea.”

purchase a five bedroom town house complete with a private pool. If France is more your thing, a three bedroom detached character cottage complete with gite complex (with rental potential), a swimming pool and huge garden in the Dordogne could be yours for the same price." Amy concludes: "With prices reaching such high levels, it's no surprise that people are looking to release equity in their current homes in order to free up capital to invest in popular destinations where they can expect good rental yield. Conversely, we are seeing many selling up entirely and opting to make outright purchases overseas with the proceeds from the sale of their UK homes. And who can blame them? Even with the government announcing this week that 10,000 new homes have been reserved in their "Help to Buy" stimulus package – we expect to see more and more people shunning the UK and instead stretching their money and purchasing larger, more luxurious homes in warmer destinations for a fraction of the price."

UK house prices Ferry services compared

As house prices in England and Wales reached an alltime peak in July, driven primarily by huge demand for property in the capital, it should come as no surprise that those in the market for property are casting their net further afield in order to get more for their money in foreign destinations. July saw the average house price rise by 0.3 per cent to a record £232,969. So, what can you get for that amount in the UK and how does this compare to popular expat destinations which are gathering more and more attention as a result of offering far more for your money? Amy Baker, Assistant Editor at the Overseas Guides Company explains: "In London, for £230,000, you can expect to get, at most, a maisonette or two bedroom flat in London Zone 3. If you were to venture out of London, for the same price you could be the owner of a three bed house complete with a private garden and two parking spaces in Bracknell. Now, if you were to look to the popular expat destination of Murcia, Spain, for less than £230,000 you could

up on last year

Just like their air travel counterparts sea ferry operators have seen a surge in numbers 12 months on since the London Olympics.

Figures published by industry body Discover Ferries show total passengers for all of the 75-plus UK ferry routes during the last three months to 31st July are up 4% compared with the same period last year – to a total of nearly 12.4m passengers. This July, with great weather and family holidays underway, the increase on routes to the Continent were 10.7% up on July 2012, with nearly 2.3 million travellers taking a ferry trip to Denmark, France, Holland and Spain.

The short sea Channel ferry routes showed the biggest increase (13%) in passenger numbers in July from operators DFDS, P&O Ferries and MyFerryLink. Also performing strongly, and up 6.4% on last year, were North Sea routes to the continent operated by DFDS, P&O Ferries and Stena Line; and the Western Channel routes, up 4.2%, serviced by Brittany Ferries, DFDS and Condor Ferries. Discover Ferries' Director, Bill Gibbons, said: “These latest figures show an accelerating summer trend for ferry travel. August ferry bookings are also looking strong”.

Latest Department of Health figures show that over the past three years more than 32,000 NHS managers received "exit packages". Of these, 330 people received pay-offs totalling more than £200,000, while just under 2,000 pocketed between £100,000 and £200,000. The figures come in the same week that NHS workforce statistics show the number of nursing jobs lost since the election in 2010 has topped 5,000. Labour have claimed that NHS chiefs have squandered £1.4bn on axing staff as part of David Cameron's shake-up of the health service.

The findings show 90% of pet owners think of their animal as part of the family. A third (33%) of those even claim to prefer their pets to real life members of their family, with one in six (15%) considering their pet more important than their cousin. And some, around 16%, have even put them on the 2011 National Census Report with a number of them declaring the family dog to be their “son”. Well, they are a part of the family, aren’t they?!

Boris wants On the run.... Your leftover more Aussie erm, again! cash can connections help According to Mayor of London Boris Johnson Britain’s future lies with stronger links being made with Australia, claiming that the Aussies want to come to the UK and they should have the same freedom of working in the country as EU citizens. Over the past year Boris has become more and more anti-EU saying last May that, if David Cameron cannot renegotiate the UK’s membership in 2013, then it should leave though in November he said his “overwhelming instinct” would be to vote to stay in the EU if it came down to a vote.

Boris, who is visiting Australia says that he has

met people who watch Top Gear and has seen posters for Jamie Oliver’s recipes adding that the Brits are more deeply connected to Australia than any other country on the planet.

He has singled out Aussie teacher Sally Roycroft as an example after she was “effectively kicked out of Britain" adding that, in his opinion, she had been told to "bog off by the authorities in our country because it was too much of a palaver to go through the business of sponsoring her to stay". Using his usual grasp of “strine” (the name for Australian slang) he said: “it is time Roycroft was given a fair suck of the sauce bottle".

A bag full of money - but whose is it? A bin bag stuffed with thousands of pounds of cash was left on the doorstep of a house last week. North Yorkshire Police said they will not reveal the exact amount of money in the sack that was handed in to officers in York by the householder on Tuesday but a spokesman said Tuesday was bin collection day in that part of the city. Now

appealing for the public's help to work out what has happened. Detective Inspector Andrea Kell of York CID, said: "This is a very unusual find which remains unexplained and we would like to find out where the money came from and rule out any criminal connection." Ms Kell said the bag was found outside the former vicarage at 10am on Tuesday morning and she believes it was left at some point during that morning.

A convicted murderer and burglar, Paul Flint, 48, who walked out of Ford Prison near Arundel in Sussex on July 1st is believed to have committed at least three burglaries in Brighton and Hove since he went on the run from the open prison. This is not the first time Flint has gone AWOL. He was jailed in 1990 and escaped from low-security Hollesley Bay prison last

summer after having been released on temporary licence. He was arrested five days later in Bristol “We think he is likely to commit more crime unless he is arrested so I would urge anyone that sees him to contact us immediately,” said Detective Inspector Dave Richards, from Sussex Police adding: “Please do not approach him, just dial 999.”

Kids still want to be pilots or princesses An independent research poll of 650 children between the ages of 6 and 12 years revealed that being a pilot or a footballer, is still the top career choice for boys while girls want to grow up to be teachers, vets and medical staff. However, of those asked there was a smattering who wanted to be a Formula 1 driver, a tree house builder (where did that come from?!), a

monster truck driver, a pirate, a shark fisherman, an inventor and, of course, a princess or a superhero.

The findings also show regional differences; children in London and Wales want to be pilots, kids in Northern Ireland Superheroes, youngsters from the South West hope to be teachers, children in the North West aspire to be footballers and Scottish kids hope to be vets.

Guardia inspection of reef condemned by Gibraltar Following an incident over the weekend, the office of the Governor of Gibraltar has issued the following statement: “The Convent is aware of the unlawful incursion into BGTW by Guardia Civil divers in and around the recently created North West

Artificial Reef System, a reef created by HMGoG in compliance with EU legislation and international conventions.“

The Governor said: "The act of diving itself constituted a serious violation of British

sovereignty but this apparent interference with the reef is a new and worrying aspect. This is a blatant attempt to exercise jurisdiction inside BGTW and, in the light of the conciliatory position taken by HMGoG, a particularly unhelpful development at

a time when all parties should be seeking to ease the current tensions". The incident was reported immediately to London and Madrid for consideration of the appropriate follow up action.

According to a YouGove poll commissioned by travel company easyJet, an amount as high as £2.3 billion in leftover foreign currency could find its way to the back of a drawer once the holiday is over.

The airline will carry on operating a scheme called “Change For Good” until the end of September which sees passengers being asked to donate their unwanted currency so they can help save lives by giving the collected money to charity and partner UNICEF to use in their work vaccinating children against deadly diseases.

In addition to the £1.2m raised since the launch of the partnership in July 2012, easyJet has also raised over £215,000 through passenger donations in support of an emergency appeal for UNICEF's work helping the children of Syria who have been caught up in the current crisis.

The initiative is part of UNICEF's global 'Change for Good' programme, which has raised over £53m for the world's most vulnerable children in partnership with leading airlines across the globe. www.unicef.org.uk

7-year-old girl Ex-JP Morgan killed in shootout trader arrested

BREAKING NEWS.........BREAKING NEWS...........BREAKING NEWS.......

A seven-year-old girl was killed last week after being hit in crossfire from a shootout between two local gypsy gangs, Los Perla and Los Marianos, in the notorious Tres Mil Viviendas area of Seville. Her parents, aged 30 and 32, were also hit by bullets during the exchange. The girl was still alive when she arrived at the Virgen del Rocío hospital but died during the night. The police suspect one of the gangs mistakenly opened fire on the wrong address in a dispute over money. Neither the girl nor her parents are members of the two warring families. The police arrested ten people belonging to the Los Perla gang on Friday in Mijas, and seized two pistols, two shotguns, €150,000 and eight kilos of gold in the apartment where they had hidden after the shootout. Nine were taken to Sevilla and remanded in custody.

Former JPMorgan employee Javier MartinArtajo (right) has been arrested in Madrid in connection with the "London Whale" trading scandal at the bank.

A number of police were deployed in Tres Mil Viviendas to prevent revenge attacks. The wall of the house where the girl and her parents lived was riddled with bullets and the police recovered around 20 spent cartridges at the scene. Shortly after the shootout, another gun fight took place a few hundred metres away in the Las Vegas area of the neighbourhood. The president of the neighbourhood committee,

who lives in the apartment block where the second shootout occurred, said local residents are “extremely worried because these incidents happen very frequently and although the authorities do react, in the majority of cases they are unable to get on top of the situation”.

Los Marianos were involved in another shootout in Tres Mil Viviendas in 2009 in which a minor was killed.

The pair are alleged to have marked up the market value of an investment portfolio to hide its plummeting value. The shortfall has been attributed to Bruno Iksil, a trader who became known as the "London Whale".

Premature baby dies of infection

nine babies have been isolated after a premature baby at the reina Sofia Hospital died after being infected by Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria, which is not transmitted by air.

The mayor of a town popular with British tourists has been getting a pasting since he posted pictures of a pretend military invasion of Gibraltar on his Facebook page.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Gibraltarian Jonathan Manasco said of Francisco Perez Trigueros that “it is fools like this that encourage others to violence and hatred,” while Ernest Romero told Trigueros to “go to hell” on the website of a Gibraltarbased activist group. The photoshopped image also shows a Spanish flag flying over the British territory and an Osborne bull – Spain’s national symbol – halfway up the Rock.

Trigueros, a member of the governing Partido Popular, which is currently beating the war drums over Gibraltar, got himself into hot water last month over an attack on Catalan nationalists who booed Spain’s national anthem at the opening of the Barcelona swimming world championships. His Facebook posting said:

The bacteria was detected in the babies but only one was infected and is undergoing treatment. a hospital spokesman said all the antibiotics in use had been investigated and those which were resistant to the bacteria had been withdrawn. –

British boy drowns in pool in Cartama A three-year-old British boy died on Sunday after falling into a swimming pool while on holiday with his family. Political mileage

T

o show just how low Spain's politicians are prepared to go merely to gain some political mileage, the father of one of the victims of last month's train crash, which killed 79 people, in an appeal on television last week, asked the political parties not to use the crash for their own political ends. If you have to do anything, he said, stick to helping us find out why the crash happened. He didn't name any political parties but the very fact that he made the appeal indicates that something is going on, and that's sick. I would like to think that this treacherous Opposition that is scourging us at the moment wouldn't go as far as blaming Mariano Rajoy for the crash – but they're dab hands at twisting facts to get political mileage out of them.

T

ake the Historical Memory Law my fellow columnist Martin Delfin refers to this week. The sad truth is that the Civil War could only have ended in a dictatorship of the Right or Left, as the words of the last Republican Socialist President Juan Negrin indicate. According to Anthony Beevor in his "Battle for Spain", in a meeting on December 10th, 1938, "Negrin outlined his far from democratic vision, which was entirely in agreement with Communist policy". (By that time, the Socialist Party was completely dominated by Stalin's commissars.)

N

egrin realised it was impossible to unite the Socialist and Communist parties and expected the latter to absorb the former at the end of the war.

B

ack to Beevor: "Negrin realised that to depend on the Communist Party is unfavourable from the international standpoint. The existing Republican parties have no future. The Popular Front (my note: which won the February 1936 general election) does not have a common discipline and is torn apart by inter-party struggle. What is needed therefore is an organisation that would unify all that is best in all of the parties and organisations and would represent a fundamental support of the government. There is no returning to the old parliamentarianism, it will be impossible to allow the ‘free play’ of parties as it existed earlier, for in this case the Right might once again force itself into power. This means that either a unified political organisation or a military dictatorship is necessary."

A

s Beevor notes: "Negrin's plan for a 'National Front' party was more or less a left-wing

A

counterpart to what Franco had achieved with his Movimiento Nacional."

s for the Communist Party not being acceptable from an international point of view, more than 70 years later Communism is even more of a dirtier word than it was then – which is why the Spanish Communist Party hides behind another name – Izquierda Unida (United Left). As for the Popular Front being torn apart by internal strife, doesn't that bring today's Socialist Party to mind?

I

n fact, what Negrin was proposing was a totalitarian state as envisaged by Hitler and Stalin, which would have caused more heartbreak than Franco did. The leaders of a Left dictatorship would have exterminated, imprisoned or driven out their opponents, just as Franco did. However, being Sovietdominated, many Spaniards would end up objecting to a misery imported from abroad – at least Franco was homegrown. Being an uppity lot, they would have fought the dictatorship using guerrilla and terrorist methods, as the anti-Franco groups still in Spain did until he beat them by the early Fifties. But the real problems would have started with the Cold War, when the CIA, the MI6 and the KGB would have got in on the act, causing the same mayhem and mischief in Spain as they did in all the non-Western parts of the world.

I

don't know if the CIA, the MI6 and the KGB were very active in Spain in those years, but if they were here, Franco kept them in line and the Spaniards who opposed him were able to develop a home-grown opposition, acceptable to the majority. Spaniards really hate foreigners meddling in their internal affairs!

A

nd at least Franco did them all a favour by dying in 1975, 14 years before the fall of the Berlin wall, giving Spain a head start over the Communist world. By the time the Russians and their satellite countries started getting a whiff of that mindblowing thing called freedom, Spain had a very able king, a parliamentary democracy and was pretty well integrated into Europe. No longer did Africa begin at the Pyrenees.

Y

www.thenewsonline.es

ou just have to look East to the former Soviet empire to see how well off Spain is, despite her treacherous Opposition which would like to keep alive all the evils of the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship in the belief that they're getting a lot of political mileage out of it. Fools!

Questions at the UN Writes for the English language version of

T

he administration of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy beginning next month is scheduled to face some tough questions before the United Nations. Not only will Spain and Great Britain take their concerns to the UN about the ongoing dispute over Gibraltar, which has come to a head this summer, but the Partido Popular government will perhaps have to answer complaints by a platform of human rights activists as to why the Rajoy administration insists on keeping judicial authorities from opening inquiries concerning crimes committed during the Franco regime.

T

he so-called Platform for Franco-era Crimes has been carrying out a petition drive through the Internet calling on the United Nations to insist that Spain keep up with its international obligations and open a full inquiry into the disappearances, murders and other abuses that took place under the Franco regime. At the same time petitioners are protesting against the PP government's complete ignorance of the Historical Memory Law, the controversial measure passed during Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero's administration that gives the victims and survivors of Franco-era crimes some formal recognition. This statute nevertheless is a watered down version of what its proposers originally wanted because it doesn't provide for any state aid to those wanting to find the remains of the tens of thousands who are buried in common graves throughout Spain. Thanks to private associations and volunteer archaeologists these victims are being dug up and their bones are carefully being analysed.

T

he petition before the United Nations comes at a time when international pressure to investigate the surviving officials of Franco's government is growing. An Argentinean judge in Buenos Aires is currently hearing testimony from a group of Spanish citizens – most of them living in that country – who want to see these former Francoists answer for their past responsibilities. The judge, Maria Servini, is using the concept of international justice, the practice that was stripped from the High Court after the United States, China, Israel and other nations put pressure on Spain to rein in their judges, including Baltasar Garzon.

O

ne of the Franco officials who has been named as a defendant in the Argentinean case is the father of current Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, who served in Franco's Cabinet during the final years of the regime. He has been formally accused of complicity in the disappearance of a group of agricultural workers. But all these matters could be negotiated behind closed doors, leaving victims with little more than a memory of their attempt to find justice, because the Spanish government wants to join forces with Argentina to take on Britain at the UN Security Council over Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands. Argentina currently holds the rotating presidency at the council, which gives it some clout among the permanent and nonpermanent nations that serve on the body as to putting together an agenda to be discussed.

ut at the same time there are many sore issues between Spain and Argentina that will play into this affair. Spanish officials are still ticked off over President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's repossession last year of YPF, Repsol's local affiliate for which it is demanding some €12 billion for the nationalisation – an amount cashstrapped Argentina has refused to pay. But as they say, politics makes strange bedfellows and any type of offensive strategy against Britain would no doubt mean some sort of brokered agreement between the two nations. Perhaps a lesser reimbursement for YPF in exchange for dropping the judicial inquiry? Foreign Minister Jose GarciaMargallo is to travel to Buenos Aires next month to meet with his counterpart.

I

t won't be a surprising move if the Peronist government of President Fernandez de Kirchner also decides to clip the wings of Judge Servini; her ongoing battle with the judiciary in her country has become her personal war. And it won't be the first time she will make moves against the judiciary. A lot of intrigue is expected to take place at the United Nations during the autumn, and it will occur when the three countries are expected to face their biggest diplomatic confrontation that could pit a host of Latin American nations against some European powers.

It’s very quiet on the wildside at present, so the next few articles are going to focus on tracks and signs of animals and birds that you may not see, though you know they’re there, from evidence. The first article is an Agatha Christie, Who Done It?

Background

If a dead bird is found, the condition of the feathers will give you some clues as to who the murderer might be. Small birds are not usually found as they are swallowed whole by a fox or owl. Bodies of larger birds may be found lying in the open – with careful inspection the culprit may be revealed.

A murder investigation! Victim: Wood pigeon

CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE / SUSPECTS!

BIRD OF PREY •Partially feathered carcase •Mass of down and feathers •Kink or bend in feather where it has been gripped •Sometimes below a plucking post •Undamaged quill base

N 13

WEDNESDAY, August 28th 2013

MAMMAL •Pile of soggy feathers •Feathers matted together with saliva •Trail of dropped feathers •Quills bitten off and spat out

So, Detective, gather your evidence and identify the murderer!!!

Read your favourite news, plus a whole lot more in

Community News The Salon is back with their new season So, another season begins and a warm welcome to you. If you haven't been away a very warm welcome! Málaga Feria was very, very hot and although I was tempted to go to the Music and Dance festival in the Parque my A/C is very nice too.

However, you are more interested in the way things will be hotting up at the theatre so let me begin with the changes this year brings and there are a lot of them.

Many of you will know by now that after many years at the theatre box office Brian, as he is affectionately known, has retired. Val Williams and FOTA organised a splendid 80th birthday party to say farewell. He is staying in Fuengirola and you will still see him at the theatre – but now as an audience member for the first time since he began to work in the box office over 20 years ago.

With Brian going, what to do with the box office presented us with a dilemma and opportunities. We needed a new box office manager but the best candidate was also a very good stage manager – and they are gold dust. So the solution is to have Sarah Jane Gale as the box office manager with support from Helen Tomlinson and Sandra Lillywhite when Sarah is stage managing. We looked at the hours the box office was open and decided that except when a performance is on that evening, the box office should stay open until 2.30 and not open in the evening. Brian isn't the only one we have said farewell to. Nik who has worked on sound for the past few years has decided to move on and we hope to appoint a successor shortly. He will be staying with us through September so you will have a chance to say goodbye. And then there was the big one… We have a new computer system, so new that I haven't been shown

it yet! Our plan is eventually to take bookings on line and we have made arrangements for payment to be made by plastic. Not straight away, but soon you will be able to go online, choose your seat and make a payment by card, picking up the ticket on the evening. Clearly one or two wrinkles have to be sorted out so keep an eye on our Facebook page (The Salon Varietes) where I will put what I learn as I learn it. You can definitely make payments by card now if you book for one of the shows I tell you about below.

Our approach to publicity has changed a little too. TRE wanted 60 euros for an interview about one of our shows. This prompted us to look at radio advertising and we decided that with our very limited budget we couldn't get the coverage needed to be effective. Using some of the money saved we have made changes to newspaper advertising, posters and internet social networking. You may have seen our new ad in this week's The News – much bigger and bolder. The better ads have been made possible by changing the design of the posters so that now a poster shows the next four shows. We hope this gives people the chance to plan ahead. We have checked and updated our poster distribution and you can help here. If you know of somewhere that will be willing to take a poster, in an area where there aren't many already, let us know. Our presence on Facebook has increased too. At the beginning of last year we were getting about 200 'hits' on a post and now we get about 600. It is a good way to keep in touch with what is going on without ploughing through a long newsletter! We have also linked in with other local Facebook pages which have about 4000 regular readers. Tweeting is a step too far at the moment but who knows? We continue to use and be grateful to, our many friends who give us space in the local advertising

magazines and radio stations 'what's on' features.

WHAT'S ON

On Friday September 6th our first show is a one night performance 'Encore' by The Three Tenors – three splendid singers with a varied programme to get the year going.

Then our first play of the season opens on Friday September 13th. And what a play! Last year one of our Board members saw ITS of Marbella perform 'Dirty Dusting' (pictured below) and thought it one of the funniest plays he had seen. It has been several times round the world delighting audiences but shocking some of them. This is not for the faint hearted or easily offended.

When cleaning ladies get dirty… It all starts with the threat of redundancy. When three cleaning ladies are told to expect the old heave-ho, their hackles rise. These are cleaning ladies not to be messed with. They hatch a plot. Simple in concept, it is soon implemented and the latest sex-chat line goes live. So too do the laughs. Olive’, ‘Gladys’ and ‘Elsie’ are the dusters who go dirty in this hit comedy by northern playwrights Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood. Their arch enemy is the despicable ‘Dave’, their supervisor who longs only to get one over on his troublesome workforce. The performance is at 8.00 and for those who live along the Cercanias line a reminder that the last train from Fuengirola leaves at 12.20 so an 8

o'clock start is just like the old Sunday at 7. So Friday September 13th, Saturday 14th both at 8 and Sunday at 7. This ITS production features Paul Baker, Carol Woolnoth and Carmel Rogers along with Kate Jackson who is also the Director. Personally I have been looking forward to this all summer! On Sunday September 22nd 'The Rat Pack' return. Little needs to be said about them. They put on a tremendous show last time they were here and I am confident they won't disappoint. That is at 7.00

The following Sunday, September 29th, again at 7.00 ‘Forever Divas’, two great favourites of the theatre with two great voices taking you through an unforgettable evening of great songs. October will begin with a tribute to Elton John on Saturday 5th but more of that later.

Well, thank you for getting this far. Don't forget you can stay ahead of the game on our Facebook page and I have just been sent a preview of our new website. So lots more news for you.

Points for kids too Every year Iberia attends to the needs of 800,000 unaccompanied minors between the ages of five and 17 years of age. The service is provided on point-to-point and connecting flights on all Iberia Group airlines (Iberia, Iberia Express, and Iberia Regional/Air Nostrum).

The airline points out that the facility is free but parents and guardians should inform either the airline or travel agent well before the date of travel.

Don’t just turn up at the airport unannounced and expect the same degree of service.

For connections made at Madrid-Barajas airport, Iberia boasts a new 160square metre special lounge in T4, near the main departure lounge, equipped for children with television, tables for having snacks or playing, and even a quiet zone for stretching out on reclining chairs to rest. The area is a part of Iberia’s Ágora project, a programme

to improve all customers’ travel experience at the airline’s T4 hub.

Golfers do the coast proud raising money this was a fantastic achievement but we also want to know how he does it – he must always be out on the golf course to get that low a handicap at that age, so why isn’t he in school! Only kidding Lucas, they’re just jealous of an obviously gifted player!

Iberia also has a loyalty programme for children between two and 11, called Iberia Plus Kids, allowing kids to earn travel points and obtain special deals in children’s recreation centres, language studies abroad, etc. For details see www.iberia.com/fly-withiberia/minors information supplied by British Travel News

What a great show! Last Friday evening one of the original stars of Phantom of The Opera arrived in Coin to entertain a sell out audience.

Michael Sterling sang songs from Phantom and a variety of shows and was accompanied on stage by his “other half” Natasha Alexa Kimball whose voice positively

soared into the night. His daughter, Scarlet, was also there and made a short appearance on the stage to hand something to her dad but, she didn’t sing. Plenty of time to learn from her talented mum and dad in the future! The evening saw 201 people paying for tickets and raised just under €600 for the local CHAIN animal charity. If you missed last week’s

show, there’s still time to see Mike. On 21st, 27th and 29th August he will be at Valparaiso in Fuengirola followed by a special show in Estepona on the 30th where he will, once again, be joined by Natasha plus Stephen Lloyd Morgan and Adele Lee Peters.

Memorial Golf Day The Frank Bowles Memorial Golf Day took place recently at Los Olivos de Mijas Golf and, together with the prizegiving evening buffet at Hotel Tamisa Golf, provided a fine day of entertainment, at the same time raising €1500 for the Mijas La Cala Lions Diabetic Support Group. This Memorial Golf Day, now in its second year, found 70 of Frank's old golfing buddies taking part in the Shotgun Start at 1.00pm playing for the trophies kindly provided by Blevins Franks.

Organiser of the day Roger Wedge said "It was wonderful to see the turnout for the golf, and for the support at the evening celebrations." Anne Bowles, Coordinator for The Diabetic Support Group said "We would sincerely like to thank the main sponsors for the day Blevins Franks, Sontec Hearing Centres, Avalon Europe and Sunshine Golf and everyone who generously donated prizes for the auction and raffle. A fantastic day was enjoyed by the 52 players who took part in the recent golf tournament in aid of LARF a UK-based charity that raises money for the care, support and medical equipment desperately needed for the treatment of children and young adults under the age of 24 with life-threatening cancer and leukaemia while in hospital or in the community.

Of note were player Nick (pictured above) from La Cala who played all the way round in the stifling heat in a Budweiser suit and raised a whopping €900 on his own. How he managed to survive the heat in that padded suit all day is a mystery to all but, well done Nick! The other player of note who took part in the competition was a young French lad, 10-year-old Lucas Dutartre (pictured above, right, in the centre) who plays off 16 and finished with 46 points. All who play golf know that

There were no hold-ups during the shotgun start game and La Cala golf supplied a very welcome buffet following the game. Thanks should go to Solly’s café in La Cala, El Oceano, Golden Tarts, and Sunshine golf for all their help and sponsorship.

The day managed to raise a formidable €2,400 for the charity and will make a great deal of difference to the people who will benefit most from it, the young people fighting cancer and leukaemia. Organiser Henry from Henry’s Bar on El Jardin, La Cala (he of the fabulous blue eyes!) now has the unenviable task of starting to put together next year’s game, hopefully to raise even more and, next year,

he says: “Come on all you lady golfers, we’d like to see you taking part too on this fab day out to have fun, a great game of golf and to raise money for a very good cause.”

John the Fish is back home in La Parra Tea John the Fish, one of Los Boliches most famous characters, has moved back to La Parra which is where it all began – as always, totally committed to bringing top quality fish and chips and professional service to all his customers old and new. When John moved to Spain he opened the original La Parra and after serving good quality fish and chips moved on to pastures new and bigger premises – but now he is back in his first love, La Parra. It has taken well over a year to transform the old La Parra into the beautiful

new restaurant and bar, renamed La Parra Gold, and he jokes that the only thing left after 10 years of the old La Parra is himself!

John prides himself on all fresh and homemade products and, as well as his signature fish and chips, John will be serving an extensive menu to complement them with 10 starters – ranging from soup to ribs and prawn cocktail, to name but a few. Other chip shop staples will be there with onion rings, pickled eggs, battered sausages and – new to the coast – battered Mars Bars. Other mains include a selection of

U if! Relax and take the time out for Dbswfsz!Sftubvsbou a great lunch Grand Opening Wednesday 4th September

El Rio owner Tony serving his delicious tapas

When it’s been as hot as it has been recently, what is really nice is to be able to take a bit of time out for a really good lunch and that’s exactly what we did last Thursday. Leaving work early was a bonus in itself and we took ourselves off to Bar el Rio in Los Boliches where you can eat inside in the cool or outside and get the added bonus of shade and people watching.

Their tapas are all freshly made and you can certainly tell the difference. We tried a quite large variety of what they had on offer including deep fried crab claws and huge prawns wrapped in potato strings served with a sweet and sour sauce – sounds weird but believe me, they were delicious and I wanted to try them after seeing one of the TV chefs doing them. A lovely fresh tangy tropical salad, mussels in a spicy chilli sauce and hake goujons. We followed our “fish course” with a lovely light spinach tortilla, pinchitos that were perfectly cooked, not overspiced and still moist and tender, plus crêpes filled with chicken, onion and red pepper, and “magro con tomate” served with a rich tomato sauce (I have to say the sauce was

so good I was tempted to dip everything into it!) and patatas a lo pobre.

Tapas cost between €1.50 and €2.50 but the portions are quite large.

In general, the lunch was a great break from our hectic days and gets a very big “Thumbs up!” for food, service and ambiance. If you don’t fancy tapas, then there is an extensive menu in both Bar El Rio and it’s neighbouring Restaurante El Rio with soups, salads, pastas, fish dishes, steaks, stroganoff, roast leg of baby lamb, roast duck and chateaubriand – to name but a few. They also have a three-course menu del dia that includes bread, dessert or coffee for a very reasonable €12.50.

2 Gun s

Directed by Baltasar Kormakur Starring: Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg

The movie may have had mixed reviews but there is a real consensus that in Wahlberg and Washington Hollywood may have found the new comedy drama pairing to rival Gibson and Glover or even Newman and Redford.

When we first meet them we believe that Bobby (Washington) and Stig (Wahlberg) are two career criminals into drug dealing with a bit of light bank robbery as a useful sideline. But in fact Bobby is working for the Drug Enforcement Agency and Stig for the Marines, and

neither is aware that the other is a law enforcement officer. Their job is to infiltrate a heavy duty Mexican drug ring and rob a bank – but it all goes horribly wrong when they discover that the heist is not the $3 million they were expecting, but a whopping $43 million.

Life starts to get complicated and even more so when the guys discover that neither of them is who the other thinks they are. Complicated? Well, not really. The plot’s been seen before in different guises and of course it

Director: Baz Luhrmann Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher

The adaptation is narrated by Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), who recounts his adventures on Long Island to a doctor while at a sanatorium. Using word-for-word passages from the novel, Carraway describes his move to New York to try

his hand in the bond business. There, he reconnects with his cousin, Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) and learns his next-door neighbour is none other than Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), the secretive millionaire known for his lavish

sk anyone to name a Vince Vaughn movie and they will probably recite a list of comedies … ”Wedding Crashers”, “Starsky and Hutch” and “Fred Claus”, etc. All of these are extremely entertaining, very watchable lightweight movies. Vaughn is famous for delivering huge chunks of witty dialogue in rapid fire style, but what he seems to be less known for is his remarkable acting ability in more serious dramatic roles.

involves our heroes going on the run not just from the drugs cartel but corrupt senior law enforcement officers too.

There are some pretty gruesome Tarantinoesque violent scenes as the two men try to keep one step ahead of their pursuers mixed with amusing comedy moments and the two actors display a hugely watchable screen chemistry.

The movie is based on a comic book and the writer already started has working on the sequel – 3 Guns. With the two actors working so well together who knows – there’s room for a sequel, and hopefully a better script.

In the meantime, 2 Guns is stylish and pacy with plenty of action sequences to keep everything rolling along.

Release date: August 27th

parties and fantastical reputation. Little does Carraway know that Gatsby acts this way in hopes of winning back Daisy's love despite five years of separation and her marriage to another man.

n a 2001 film, “Domestic Disturbance”, Vaughn plays evil stepfather, Rick Barnes. Danny (the son) sees through Rick’s affable exterior and witnesses him commit a murder, but the police and even the Danny’s natural father (John Travolta) think he is just being a difficult attention seeking child. We see Vaughn swinging personalities from a charming husband to an evil threatening force when he is alone with Danny, and his dual characters are frighteningly convincing.

A

nother underrated movie of Vaughn’s is “Clay Pigeons” (1998). The film begins with Jaquin Phoenix on a shooting trip with his friend with whose wife he is having an affair. His friend, knowing his wife is cheating on him, commits suicide in front of Phoenix. Riddled with guilt, Phoenix tries unsuccessfully to end the affair, then he meets Lester Long (Vaughn) who offers to kill the problematic widow. Despite Phoenix’s objections, Lester kills her anyway and anyone else who gets in his way, and every time a body turns up, Phoenix is unfortunately, always at the scene. Vaughn’s performance in this movie is electric – funny guy with a high pitched girly giggle one minute, and dangerous killer the next.

I

By Amy Thomas

n 1998 Vaughn was teamed with Phoenix again in the thought provoking “Return to Paradise”. John (Vaughn) a Brooklyn hustler, Tony

(David Conrad) an architect and Lewis (Phoenix) take a vacation together in Malaysia. When John and Tony return to New York, Lewis decides to stay and pursue a cause dear to his heart, animal rights and welfare. Two years later, lawyer (Anne Heche) approaches Tony and John and presents them with a dilemma. Lewis is on death row for drug charges for substances found in his home in Malaysia for which they were all responsible. Will they go back, admit their responsibility and sacrifice three years of their lives each doing jail time, or will they turn their back on their friend and let him face the gallows alone?

T

he other non comedic role which showcased Vaughn’s talent was the 2002 movie “Prime Gig”. This is a film that many people on this coast will relate to. Vaughn’s Character, Pendleton ‘Penny’ Wise makes a lot of money working for telemarketing scammers, but is eventually scammed himself. I don’t think that this film was released generally, going straight onto DVD, but don’t let that put you off seeking it out. As we all know from bitter experience, it’s the high budget, special effects movies that make the cinema while the low key films of substance often slip through the net.

S

o next time you’re in the supermarket, have a good delve through the DVD bargain bins and if you find a lesser known Vince Vaughn movie (not forgetting “Swingers” one of his priceless, early cult comedies), treat yourself to a buried treasure. You won’t regret it!

A bolt from out of the blue could throw an opportunity into the mix that could take your life in a different direction. Life is far from dull right now and even though there is a lot going on you are also in a position to establish a strong sense of inner balance. Someone surprises you by showing a side of them not previously seen; you could find that this in turn inspires you to delve into something that you have not explored fully. Keeping your eye on what holds ultimate meaning for you is vitally important, it is important that you do not get pulled away by distractions that serve as time wasters and energy takers. Do not let the irrelevant have a hold on you. This week it is about eliminating all things that do not support your needs now, including any self-defeating thoughts. This is a good time for a spring clean, clear the clutter and make way for the new. You crave diversity and variety, in fact the more different experiences you can have the more you feel alive and engaged in the world. Lately, you may have had some electric ideas but to capitalise on their chances of manifesting, you need to make sure that your heart is in it as well as your thoughts. However, do not let those fears stop you from recognising a real opportunity when it is in front of you – remain optimistic but true to yourself. This week you will have the extra courage to go the distance, to take risks and to follow your instinct. Events could come straight out of nowhere; leading to a breakthrough that only happens once in a lifetime. Do not over think things, go with the flow and feel your way there. The only wrong thing you are in danger of doing this week, is questioning your own ability to do the right thing.

You may have to experience an edge of discomfort this week in order to gain some objectivity that can offer the understanding you need to proceed with speed. There will be some old content surfacing in your key connections that need to be confronted and cleared. Keep things simple, remembering to take care of your own basic health needs, you will need to make sure you have adequate energy reserves for the upcoming tasks.

It may have felt lately like your terrain is covered in a fog and it has been hard to plan or see the wood for the trees. This has probably left you feeling very frustrated and a little bit down, the thing is every cloud does have a silver lining, so although things appear to be unsure, certainties will occur and that which has appeared to be a disappointment proves to be a blessing in disguise.

A wrong is about to be turned into a right, some power struggles are still at play but some alternative avenues will end up expanding your circle of influence, helping to turn things around. It will probably boil down to who you know not what you know. Make sure that you stand your ground and don’t give in; it will be worth it in the end. Something in your personal life could happen unexpectedly and this will turn out to be a pleasant surprise. You will also gain a lot of comfort and a sense of security this week with others that have proven their loyalty in the past. The key to ease and success this week, lies either in doing something you truly like or in learning to like something that you often feel inclined to resist or resent.

There are some steps that you need to take that could risk you creating a certain sense of alienation, steps that may honour your own unique individuality but not be understood by others. New insights into the changes that you need to make will let you know that you are on the right track even if these changes can push you out of your comfort zone and away from the mainstream. Perhaps it is the pioneer in you coming out.

A process long before now has been set in motion and it has to play itself out, call it cause and effect, it can’t just stop midstream because it is inconvenient or too painful, it has to take its natural course. You are perhaps working through something karmic with regard to family members or key people in your life. Do not let it become too much of a burden and inject some faith in human nature and eventually it will resolve.

Fear is soon to be replaced with a greater amount of hope once you have a game plan in place. Something changes when you realise that you have nothing left to lose and everything in the world to gain. The unthinkable is possible now and you are the one that has that extra special ingredient to guarantee a good outcome. Find a way to trust in what you feel but cannot see and say no to the voice of doubt in your head. There are some steps that you need to take that could risk you creating a certain sense of alienation, steps that

February 19th March 20th

In the coming week you will connect with an alternative approach of making your way in the world, one that you know will be worlds better for you in the long run. If you want balance and you want equal amounts of giving and receiving, speak up and accept nothing less than what is fair and just. A relationship may have reached the end of the road, just know if this is the case, with its removal, it will create space for someone more like minded and like hearted to enter.

Directions 1. Heat oven to 180C/gas 160C/gas 4. Grease a 20cm cake tin and line the bottom with a circle of grease-proof paper. If you want to make life easy, simply put all the ingredients (except the cocoa powder) into a food processor and whizz for 1-2 mins until smooth. If you prefer to mix by hand, beat the butter and sugar together, then add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Fold through the flour, milk and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth. 2. Divide the mixture between two bowls. Stir the cocoa powder into the mixture in one of the bowls. Take two spoons and use

them to dollop the chocolate and vanilla cake mixes into the tin alternately. When all the mixture has been used up (and if young kids are doing this, you’ll need to ensure the base of the tin is fairly evenly covered), tap the bottom on your work surface to ensure that there aren’t any air bubbles. Take a skewer and swirl it around the mixture in the tin a few times to create a marbled effect. 3. Bake the cake for 45-55 mins until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Turn out onto a cooling rack and leave to cool. Will keep for three days in an airtight container or freeze for up to three months.

ink Rise of the Smart Geek Watch The tech industry is right in the middle of a smartwatch trend and it'll only get bigger if the Samsung Galaxy Gear appears at IFA 2013 in Berlin next month Sony was one of the first "big name" companies to hit us with a serious smartwatch in the form of the Sony Smartwatch 2 a couple of months ago. But the trend is nothing new; 2013 seems intent on putting smartphones on our wrists. The big news is, of course, that Samsung is rumoured to be revealing the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch at IFA 2013 in a couple of weeks time.

But the smartwatch scene isn't (yet) dominated by the big brands. Just this week, the Omate TrueSmart smartwatch raised more than $100,000 on Kickstarter and will enter production. It's noteworthy for having a built-in five megapixel camera and a

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Calvin,

My two boys have just come back from summer camp with– of all things – nits. What can I do and how can I prevent it in the future? Judy, Benalmadena Dear Judy,

Live nits aren't easy to spot, live nits are yellowish grey, brown, or sometimes tan. When a nit dies it leaves a pale white pod, which are hard to see. Any nits found farther than a quarter inch away from the scalp have either hatched or never will. Nits strongly resist being removed from the hair shaft. When choosing a shampoo to remove the

nits make sure they are pyrethrum or permethrin based as these are the most effective. Usually the first shampoo will kill the adults, while the second dose will kill any lice that have hatched in the meantime. As time has proved, often the shampoos are not as effective as they should be, so use a nit comb as well. This has to be a repeated process.

Dear Calvin,

My hair is very heavy. Is there a way to cut this to lighten the weight but not to lose the length?

NOW AT CALLE MARIA ZAMBRANO, COIN,

mer Sumffer: O Hair and toenails done in one visit!

Prevention is difficult as your boys are constantly coming into contact with other kids who have the same problem. At home prevention can start by washing bedding on a hot wash. Vacuuming furniture, pillows, vehicles and often-used areas daily can help. I find the most effective way to rid your boys of the problem is to have their hair cut short.

Layering the hair is a great way of reducing bulk. If your hair doesn't suit layers then thinning scissors or razoring used through the underneath layers of the hair can dramatically reduce weight and still retain your length. Please always have this procedure done in a reputable salon as trying to do this yourself can be disasterous.

Dear Sue,

I think I may have an ingrowing hair. The area is swollen and very tender. What causes this and what can I do to get rid of it? Beth, Fuengirola Dear Beth,

Ingrowing hairs are very common after waxing and other types of hair removal.

Generally speaking they are caused because the hair has got weaker and can't get through the skin. To get rid of the hair sterilise the area and a needle and make a small insertion hole. Then gently squeeze both sides of the lump until the hair is visible. Use a pair of sterile tweezers to grab the hair and pull it out. Sterilise the area afterwards. To prevent ingrowing hairs do exfoliate the area regularly and make sure a qualified technician does the waxing as a bad technique can lead to ingrowing hairs.

Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip

Slammed for eating expensive ready meals while claiming to be poor with a wide screen TV

Jamie goes to ... poor Britain and its food … and compares the way they eat with their continental cousins - it’s not pretty! Celeb Chef Jamie Oliver, 38, reputedly worth around £150 million, is famous for his campaign against lousy school meals, making a huge difference to the way children eat at lunchtimes. Now he’s on the rampage again, only this time it’s about the way we eat at home if we haven’t got a lot of money saying that he just couldn’t understand people (and he reckoned it was seven out of every ten) who have very little money relying on expensive supermarket ready meals. He said: "I'm not judgmental, but I've spent a lot of time in poor communities, and I find it quite hard to talk about modern-day poverty. You might remember that scene in Ministry Of Food, with the mum and the kid eating chips and cheese out of Styrofoam containers, and behind them is a massive ******* TV. It just didn't weigh up." Jamie Oliver was comparing the way

the British poor seem to eat against those of the same social and economic standings in other countries such as Spain, Greece and Italy where they eat very healthily on cheap cuts of meat and lots of fresh vegetables and even make things that are incredibly tasty based on yesterday’s stale bread. He said that many people had told him: “You just don’t understand” but he cited a Sicilian street cleaner who had 25 mussels, 10 cherry tomatoes and a packet of pasta that had cost just 60 pence who made the most amazing meal. Oliver, who is promoting a new Channel 4 show Jamie's Money Saving Meals, urged people to go to their local market instead of the supermarket. And the guy has a point. If you’re over in the UK just go and have a look at the trollies coming out of Asda and Aldi that are loaded with, not a jot of fresh meat, fish or vegetables, but with

A square headed nun, bra, panties and bears! Justin Timberlake, in his re-union with his bandmates from N-Sync stole the show by winning four gongs at last weekend’s MTV Video Music Awards show but, what on earth was Mylie Cyrus thinking of? Dressed in what looked like a forties style pair of knickers and bra, she danced seductively with Robin Thicke to his summer hit Blurred Lines. And then there was the bit with the giant teddy bears … what was all that about? Timberlake won Video of the Year for Mirrors saying: "I don't deserve this award, but I'm not going to give it back!" One Direction won Best Song of the Summer,

appearing for the first time since the release of their movie premier of This Is Us and Bruno Mars won Best Male Video for Locked Out of Heaven and Best Choreography for Treasure. And Taylor Swift who recently split from Harry Styles from One Direction picked up the gong for Best Female Video for I Wish You Were Trouble. Lady Gaga who opened the event in New York, lived up to her name, changing costumes four times and, at one time,

looked distinctly like some sort of weird nun with a square head. One thing that can be said of the awards is that they’re never dull!

cardboard boxes that can be chucked in the microwave and be ready in five minutes max. In many cases it’s not a case of what people have by way of income, it is sheer laziness in the face of having to stand for a while preparing and cooking food. And that’s if they’ve ever learnt to cook in the first place! You can tell someone cooking is easy and can be very cheap while still being nutritious just by following a simple recipe but, if all they want to do is microwave then slob out in front of the telly, there’s not a lot you can do. I have a friend who lives on M&S ready cooked meals, and she earns a small fortune. She lives on her own and can’t be bothered even though, in fact, she’s a very good cook so it’s not just the “poor” that won’t cook. Good luck with this one Jamie, you’re going to need it! Carnival capers by coppers

The police generally try to take a laid-back view during the London Notting Hill Carnival weekend and this year was no exception to the rule. True, there are sometimes a few incidents that need a firm hand and, in the past there has been some serious trouble but, in recent years the Carnival, one of the biggest and best in the UK has pretty much gone off without a hitch. Police officers delighted crowds at Notting Hill Carnival by putting on an impromptu dance show. The three officers – dressed in high-visibility jackets and uniform – began jiving and grinding, and even displaying a little light twerking, before

forming a line on the floor and starting to row. They were circled by crowds of revellers who cheered and screamed as they danced. A video of the policemen on YouTube under the name "Notting Hill Carnival 2013 Police Dance Off", posted by MOOF Bulleh, had attracted more than 100,000 views by Monday night. The identity of the officers is not known. A Met Police spokesman declined to comment. The police tend to get a bad rap most of the time but, well done to these for getting into the spirit of the moment and let’s hope their superior officers have the same attitude and

Opinion SOS by email

Tony Byford Many News readers support SOS Animal Refuge by visiting us at our La Trocha market stall and have also been kind enough to donate items, knowing that we are a registered charity and the proceeds from the stall go directly to support our dogs. We are sad to say that due to events beyond our control we no longer have a van to transport our market items. This will badly damage our ability to raise funds and, with vets fees alone averaging

3,500 euros a month, it is hugely important that we try to replace the vehicle. So this is a plea to all those readers who have supported us in the past and will continue to do so in the future! If you have a van for sale, or you know someone who does, then please contact us on tel: 605 227 155. We are determined to overcome this setback for the sake of our animals, and are grateful for your readers’ support. If anyone has items to donate please

Hammer the Pensioner is Ian Duncan " Twit " Smith's modus operandi and he will no doubt drive expat pensioners to vote UKIP (those that are not already disenfranchised and are thus unable to vote!). I entirely agree with John Carrington and Penny James, but not Mr Petie. Get off our bums !! The only good decision by the EU, was to rightly allow all expat pensioners to receive

the WFA and I strongly suggest that those that do not want it, merely need to donate it to charity without pontificating about it to the rest of us.

PS: I do sympathise with you having to wait another six years for your pension and perhaps this would not be the case if Britain was not the highest contributor to the EU !

Comet Ison is coming!

C

Astronomers around the world are gearing up for what may turn out to be the comet of the century.

omet Ison was discovered in September 2012 while it was still in deep space at around 584 million miles away, but after its orbit had been calculated it was found that it has the potential to become a very bright spectacle by the end of 2013 and into early 2014. /2012 S1 to give it its full title is about three and a half miles in diameter. Its journey began 1000 years ago when something caused the comet to leave its normal orbit in an area way outside the solar system known as the Oort cloud. It is believed that many thousands of comets exist in this bleak twilight region that surrounds the solar system. The comets cling on to the weakest of gravitational pull from the Sun until perhaps a collision with another comet disturbs its path. lowly at first the Sun’s gravity begins to attract the comet toward it. As the comet comes more under the influence of the Sun’s gravity it begins to pick up speed. At this stage the comet is still just a ball of frozen water, ice and rock, the classic comet’s tail will not form until it is much closer to the sun. his is Ison’s first visit into the solar system and its last – it is on such a parabolic orbit that after it swings around the Sun it will be cast back out into deep space never to return. All throughout June, July and early August Ison has been on the far side of the Sun from Earth and so couldn’t be observed, but last week it was picked up again by an amateur astronomer in Arizona. It is still outside the orbit of Mars but is now travelling at over 60,000mph. It is rapidly approaching the ‘frost line’ – an area where the heat from the Sun is sufficient to begin to melt the comet. n October 1st it will pass very close to Mars when hopefully the comet’s tail will be developed. NASA is planning to use the cameras on board the Mars rover ‘Curiosity’ and the Mars orbiting satellite to get a good view of it. By then we should have a better idea of just how bright Ison could become for us. son’s orbit will bring it in ‘below’ the Earth’s orbit during early November, by then it will have accelerated to over 250,000mph! On 28th November it will skim to within

T

O I

1.2 million miles of the Sun’s surface. In astronomy terms this is really close. If it manages to survive such a close approach and doesn’t break up and disintegrate then we could be in for the show of the century. As ISON makes its outbound journey, it will pass over the Northern Hemisphere of Earth at a distance of around 40,000,000 miles on 26th December. If ISON lives up to the hype then you could expect to see it with the unaided eye anywhere between the middle of November until the middle of January 2014. ecause this is Ison’s first trip around the Sun then it still retains all of the original raw material and as it passes so close to the Sun this material will begin to vaporise and eject from the comet’s surface creating a spectacular tail. A comet’s tail doesn’t stream away behind the comet like a ribbon in the breeze, instead the tail is being blown by the solar wind and always points away from the Sun so as the comet travels back into space it will be travelling tail first. ut after saying all this, the only thing that is predictable about a comet’s appearance is its unpredictability. There have been several ‘false alarms’ sounded over the years when comets that were predicted to be spectacular simply fizzled away into nothing. In 1973 I waited patiently for the much-anticipated Comet Kohoutek to appear – in the end it turned into the most over-hyped event of the century. On the other hand, comet Hale-Bopp took us all by surprise and was a magnificent sight in 1995, it remained visible to the naked eye for almost 18 months. ll that I can say is keep watching this space and if you were considering getting a telescope then this Christmas would be the ideal time.

Vettel still the boss

Sebastian Vettel was in a class of his own at SpaFrancorchamps on Sunday in the first race back after the August summer break. He easily shot past Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes coming out of Eau Rouge on the first lap of the Belgian Grand Prix and then controlled the race to the chequered flag for his fifth GP victory of the year and his second win at the historic Spa circuit, having previously won in 2011. There was mixed news for the other title contenders with Fernando Alonso, after a poor qualifying on Saturday picking up an impressive second place, and Lewis Hamilton hanging in there by clinging on to the final podium spot, but Kimi Raikkonen's title hopes took a knock with a midrace retirement as a result of brake failure. Vettel wasn't the only one getting an impressive start, Fernando Alonso blasted off from ninth to fifth place, and then on lap four passed Button and two laps later Rosberg, to slot in behind Hamilton in third position. Meanwhile Raikkonen's team mate Romain Grosjean was forced out of the points positions after he was squeezed off the track by Sergio Perez at Les Combes on lap eight – a move that earned Perez a drive-thru penalty from the stewards. Hamilton pitted on lap twelve and Alonso was up to second, then after Alonso himself pitted, he rejoined just behind Lewis Hamilton, but on lap 15 Alonso passed Hamilton at La Source after the Brit left the door wide open. Hamilton tried to fight back up Eau Rouge and down the straight, but he couldn’t make it stick.

Jenson Button was driving the McLaren for all he was worth, and on lap 32 while in third position he was told that we’re going "back to Plan A". Button replied: "I'm up for

that". But two laps later and Button was in for some more boots, effectively ending the race for a podium, but still a strong race by the team's standards this season.

Force India’s Paul Di Resta’s race ended on lap 28 after Pastor Maldonado tried a move on Esteban Gutierrez at the Bus Stop. He ran wide, and as he rejoined, he tapped Adrian Sutil but then full on hit the other Force India of Paul Di Resta. That was the Scot's race over, while Maldonado recovered to the pits. Maldonado received a 10 second stop and go penalty for the incident. An unlucky ending for Di Resta’s weekend after so nearly clinching pole position in qualifying and being firmly

in contention for points on race day. Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate German Nico Rosberg finished fourth ahead of Australian Mark Webber in the second Red Bull and sixth-placed Briton Jenson Button for McLaren. Vettel leads the championship on 197 points while Alonso climbed back to second on 151 with Hamilton third on 139. By Mike Kerrigan

Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez achieved the fifth victory of his rookie MotoGP career to take the record for the most premier class wins in a season by a newcomer. Marquez scored his fourth win in a row to seize a clear 26-point lead at the top of the championship at Brno in the Czech Republic, fending off the challenges of key title contenders Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo.

The 20-year-old has bolstered his chances of becoming world champion in a sensational maiden season, capping his brilliant victory at Brno with a new lap record of 1m 56.135s to underline his status as the sport's dominant force. Marquez also became the first rider since Valentino Rossi in

Barcelona Edge Win Malaga 0 Barcelona 1 Malaga's first home game of the new season saw the La Liga Champions travelling from Cataluña to play in front of a full house at La Roselada.

Barcelona were without Messi who was injured and Barca manager Martino decided to leave new Brazilian signing Neymar on the bench. After a delay in paperwork preventing him to play against Valencia, Malaga started with new Polish signing Pawlowski.

The game started off fast and furious and Malaga defender Tissone had the first shot in the 2nd minute but side footed the ball too high, at the other end. Two minutes later Xavi crossed to Song whose header was saved by Malaga keeper Caballero.

Barcalona had a spell of pressure with Fabregas and Iniesta both having chances saved by Willy. On the half hour youngster Darder

crossed for Carmacho but his header went right of the post. Alexis Sanchez and Pique had chances saved by a very busy Malaga goalkeeper. A minute before half time Barca´s pressure paid off and Adriano surprised Caballero with a left footed shot from outside the box to the bottom left corner, giving Barcelona a one nil lead going into the break.

Goalscorer Adriano was substituted at half time for Dani Alves due to an injury. The game continued in the same vein and Gerard Piqué had an attempt from the centre of the box saved after 58 minutes and Fabregas missed a chance a minute later. New Barca boy Neymar came on after 63 minutes replacing Pedro, and Eliseu came on for Pawlowski for Malaga. Antunes left footed a shot from outside the box which was blocked after 65 minutes, and Malaga´s best chance to equalise came two minutes later when Fabrice

was put through by Santa Cruz but, agonisingly for the Malaga faithful, he hit the right post with a left footed shot from the centre of the box.

Neymar looked bright when he came on but couldn´t find a way past Willy Caballero. Malaga pushed for an equaliser right to the end with substitute Seba Fernandez heading the ball from the centre of the box but his effort was saved by Valdes, and Tissone right footing a shot from the centre of the box which Valdes also saved.

Malaga put on a good performance but just couldn´t find the back of the net. They travel the short distance to Sevilla next Sunday for the Andalucian derby. Malaga should by then have confirmed the loan signing of striker El Hamdaoui from Fiorentina.

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips boring for TV. If you’re going to play 78 and the pot is uncontested, raise with your standard raise, you would with say AQ because if you’re called and an A hits the flop you can represent it and the story adds up. At micro level (10c/20 and lower) in online poker keep your bluffs small because there is an old saying “You can not bluff a fool”. At this As I have mentioned on a level players will let number of occasions in this themselves become married column, when you bluff to a pocket pair and two your story needs to add up. pairs. They do not see the Limping in with 78 and then danger from flush and betting out with over cards straight draws. It is on the board does not add up probably easier to make a – more so if you raise pre good player lay down a mid with this range. On the TV strength hand than a poor you see a lot of big bluffs but player as he is focused on his you do not see the fold QQ or Js & 10s. If you’re around to the big blind, it is going to bluff the river you edited as 90% of hands in need your story to add up. I poker are run of the mill and do not see any reason to shove the river on a bluff if they won't fold for a ¾ pot bet – they will likely call EARLY BIRDS & TWILIGHT your over at CALANOVA bet. a strong understanding of the game and tend not to be playing with scared money so if they feel they smell a bluff will call. At this level you should not be over betting the pot if on a bluff. Half pot bets, if fired on two streets ,will do the job if your opponent has missed. If he stays with you to the river by all means if you think he is weak fire a third bullet but do not give him value to call. It has to be just over half pot – do not jam the pot because if you had a hand you would want a call. By jamming the pot do we want a call? Without an example Mary of a hand/bluff you lost we cannot look at why you were called with a weak hand. We can take a stab and say your bluff did not add up and the story was incomplete. So if you’re going to bluff you have to bet the draw or raise pre flop. In my opinion the best bluff is a semi bluff. If you have a flush draw on the flop is a good example and with a nut flush draw should your opponent appear weak this is the time to shove all in – we have a lot of outs so it is a coin flip.

Mourinho gives Rooney 48 hours

Jose Mourinho has given Wayne Rooney 48 hours to make a public declaration that he wants to quit Manchester United for Chelsea. In a stunning move following the 0-0 draw at Old Trafford, the Chelsea manager told the player ‘who started the story’ that ‘he now has to finish it’. Chelsea have tabled two bids for the England striker and will make a third if Rooney publicly asks to leave. United fans sang Rooney’s name throughout the game and Mourinho claims he is unlikely to make another move.

Disgraceful finale to Ashes Adam Scott wins

SPORTING

Set a target of 227 by Michael Clarke's ambitious declaration, England needed 21 more from 24 balls with five wickets in hand when play was halted by the umpires at 7.36pm.

GOLF

The Oval crowd, who had been treated to an incredible final day in which 447 runs were scored and 17 wickets fell, booed in disapproval before gathering to watch England captain Alastair Cook lift the Ashes urn following a 3-0 series win. England, who have now won three Ashes series in a row for the first time since 1977-1981, celebrated with a lap of honour while fireworks blazed over the pavilion. BBC's Cricket corrospondent Jonathon Agnew didn’t hold back with his views: “The way the fifth and final Ashes Test finished on Sunday leaves me both speechless and angry. For the bad-light regulations to force the umpires to take the players off the field with England needing just 21 runs off 24 balls for victory, in front of a full house at The Oval, with millions watching and listening at home on the

England celebrate, there were allegations later about players urinating on the outfield

edge of their seats, is an absolute disgrace” “This sort of thing must never happen again – a full house, a terrific finish unfolding, and the umpires being forced to bring it all to a crashing halt. It's just not acceptable”. “Having said all that, the draw was probably the right result in this match. Australia did not deserve to lose the Test.” Their captain Michael Clarke made a very generous declaration, which his side's position in the series forced him to do. He wouldn't have wanted to set England a

target of 227 from 44 overs, but he knew he had to dangle a carrot in front of Alastair Cook's men in order to have any hope of conjuring up the 10 wickets he needed after tea to salvage a win from this series.

Geoffrey Boycott Test Match Special summariser: "The rules are wrong, there was nothing wrong with the rules before where the umpires offered the light to the batsmen. The umpires are hamstrung by a bad rule. The spectators are left with an anti-climax."

Barclays event in New Jersey Masters champion Adam Scott won The Barclays by one stroke in the first event of the FedExCup play-offs. Australia's Masters champion fired a fiveunder 66 to edge out Tiger Woods, US Open champion Justin Rose, Gary Woodland and Graham DeLaet in New Jersey. Scott finished an hour before the final group but watched as Woods' birdie putt fell inches short on 18, after Rose had threeputted the final green.

Overnight co-leader Woodland carded two-over 73, while DeLaet took 65.

"I'm pretty shocked," said the 33-year-old Scott, who climbs to a careerhigh second in the world rankings.

World Rowing 2013: GB men's eight reach final Great Britain's men's eight team have qualified for the final at the World Championships in Chungju, South Korea. They won their heat in five minutes 32.77 seconds, finishing nearly three seconds ahead of the USA.

"We did a really good job but it's not over yet – it's all about the final," said team member Dan Ritchie.

But there was disappointment for 2008 Paralympic gold medallist Tom Aggar, who narrowly failed to make the pararowing men's single scull final. Aggar came second in his race, 0.87 seconds behind Alexey Chuvashev

of Russia, with only the winner of each heat advancing into the final. Aggar will now take part in the repechage on Tuesday.

Great Britain have sent a 58-strong squad to Korea, with men’s head coach Jurgen Grobler looking for "a minimum of two medals".

The men's eight are regarded as one of Britain's strongest hopes for a medal and the team of Alex Gregory, George Nash, Tom Ransley, Pete Reed, Dan Ritchie, Will Satch, Mo Sbihi and Andy Triggs Hodge, along with cox Phelan Hill, remain in contention.

Vuelta a Espana 2013: Nicolas Roche wins second stage Ireland's Nicolas Roche claimed his first Grand Tour victory by winning the second stage of the Vuelta a Espana. Roche, son of the 1987 Tour de France winner Stephen Roche, broke away from 25 riders with a kilometre to go on the Vuelta's first summit finish. "This is really liberating for me," he said. "I've only won eight races in my career but had so many second places." Giro d'Italia winner Vincenzo Nibali, whose Astana team won the opening time trial, took the overall lead.
