No talks until reef is removed

In an article in the Wall Street Journal on Monday, Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said Britain must remove the 70 concrete blocks that were dropped into the disputed waters off Gibraltar once used by Spanish fishermen before Madrid will agree to talks on the current border crisis. Garcia-Margallo said his government is willing to resume a dialogue with Britain and it will accept the creation of ad hoc forums that include Gibraltar and Andalusia to deal with issues relating to residents on both sides of the border. "But as Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy observed earlier this month to his British counterpart David Cameron, it is first necessary for the UK to show that it intends to undo the damage that has already been caused, in particular by removing the concrete blocks," the minister said.

Gibraltar claims the concrete reef will regenerate marine life and insists that the Spanish fishermen raked for shellfish there illegally in its waters. However, Garcia-Margallo said the waters were never included in the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht under which Spain ceded Gibraltar to Britain in perpetuity, and therefore still belong to Spain. Gib's First Minister Fabian Picardo told the BBC on Sunday that "hell will freeze over before we remove those blocks".

I was amazed to be told last week that the police have been out in full force along the Calahonda Strip demanding that the bars and restaurants there take their signs down and remove chairs and tables from their terraces – areas they are paying for. As if life running a business at the moment isn’t hard enough for these guys to survive what with hotels and travel companies doing “all-in” deals, this is just daft. If they haven’t got whatever new licence they need, tell them how to get it and give them however much time it takes for the local authorities or whoever to come up with one, making sure that said authorities give them a piece of paper of some sort to say that they have applied. The same thing goes for music licences. If they need one, fine, but make sure the things are available and don’t just ruin their businesses for something that is impossible to get. We are the foreigners here and we all understand that. The vast majority of us want to live and run businesses

Bárcenas’ funds came Ryanair told to pay up from “illicit origins” After studying the paper trail left behind by former Partido Popular treasurer Luis Bárcenas, police investigators have concluded that money he paid into Swiss bank accounts between 2000 and 2008 came from "illicit origins". Bárcenas has been in the headlines since the end of January when the El Pais newspaper first printed pages from ledgers allegedly showing a slush fund he was running for the Partido Popular Party. Bárcenas is currently in jail, as the investigation into the PP's financing and the millions of euros Bárcenas squirreled away in offshore bank accounts continues. Bárcenas has claimed that the money he held in Swiss accounts did not come from the slush fund, allegedly created with payments from Spanish businesses in exchange for favourable treatment from the PP and the government. But in their latest report, police investigators said that the €8.2 million in cash that Bárcenas paid into bank accounts abroad did not come from real estate and art sales, as the extreasurer had claimed. "It can be concluded," the

report said, "that Bárcenas added to the said balances with deposits of large amounts of cash that came from illicit origins. This affirmation is based on the huge increase in the assets of Luis Bárcenas in his Swiss accounts, and the absence of a lawful activity that would justify the amounts.” Investigators from the police force's moneylaundering unit said in their report that Bárcenas made radical changes to the way that he managed the assets he held in Switzerland from June 2009 onwards, when he was named as an official suspect in the Gürtel kickbacks-for-contracts case and the Supreme Court also began to investigate him, because of his position as a PP senator for Cantabria. "Luis Bárcenas then began to transfer large sums of money from the accounts of the TESEDUL company to Dresdner Bank and

A court in Palma de Mallorca has ordered Irish low-cost airline Ryanair to pay €1,222.26 in compensation to a family it would not allow to board one of its flights, because it refused to accept the identity documents of their threeyear-old child. The events date back to January 2011, when a married couple and their three-year-old son were trying to travel from a short break in Barcelona to their home, on the Balearic island of Ibiza.

Lombard Odier, in the United States," the report said. It goes on to explain that the destination for the majority of the funds transferred by Bárcenas was HSBC in New York, "into accounts held by the companies Brixco (€3 million) and La Moraleja (€2 million). These companies were both owned by Ángel Sanchís Herrero, the son of former PP treasurer Ángel Sanchís Perales, who is a close friend of Bárcenas."

The report states that these international money transfers were "an attempt to hide funds with the aim of preventing the Spanish tax authorities from locating them". Bárcenas claimed the €3 million transferred to Brixco was a loan, the report said, but the extreasurer "was unable to provide any documentation to justify the aforementioned arrangement."

The couple showed ground staff their Libro de Familia – a passport-style document containing information about a husband, wife and any children they might have

– as well as a residency certificate.

Under Spanish law these are valid documents that allow under-14s to fly. However, the company refused to accept the documents, and demanded a passport or Spanish identity card (DNI) instead. The court ruled that the compensation will cover the cost of the new flights the family had to pay for, the hotel room they needed while stranded in Barcelona, and the day off work missed by the husband because of the incident. Just over a month ago a Valencia court ordered Ryanair to pay €1,001 to a family for a similar incident, involving a twoyear-old girl.

Spain asked to probe Spaniards work less Cuban activist's death than EU average The family of Cuban dissident Oswaldo Paya, who died last year, have filed a complaint in Spain alleging that he was killed by senior Cuban military officers. They filed a case in the High Court asking for an inquiry into the official account that he died in a car crash along with another dissident, Harold Cepero, in July last year.

Paya was a prizewinning campaigner for civil rights. His family have refused to accept the official account of his death, alleging that the Cuban security services killed him. Paya's brother, Carlos, told the Spanish news agency Efe: "His death was not an isolated incident, it was the result of a continuing process that started a long time

ago." The Spanish court has jurisdiction over allegations of crimes against humanity committed abroad when Spanish citizens are involved.

Paya had Spanish and Cuban nationality and a Spanish politician, Angel Carromero, was convicted of vehicular manslaughter for driving the car when Paya died. Carromero was jailed for four years in Cuba, though he has been allowed to serve most of

his sentence in Spain. He has since denounced the Cuban account of the death, and said in an interview with El Mundo newspaper that Paya was not killed in the crash. Paya founded the Varela Project, a campaign set up in 1998 to gather signatures in support of a referendum on laws to guarantee civil rights. In 2002 he won the Sakharov Prize, the European Union's human rights award.

Spain was sixth on the list, with a working week of 40.2 hours, followed by

Sweden (39.9), France (39.4), Holland (39) and Italy (38.7). The UK topped the list with a 42.4 hour working week, followed by Portugal (41.3), Poland and Rumanía (tied at 41) and Germany (40.7). Thus a Spanish worker labours 12 days less than his counterpart in the UK. The Adecco study also

showed that men work longer hours than women – an average of 41.4 hours and 39.3 hours respectively.

In Sweden, men work on average 40 hours a week and women 39.8 hours, making it the most equal country genderwise.

Fewer fires this year

Just over 25,000 hectares of woodland have been destroyed by fire since the beginning of this year – 85 per cent less than during the same period last year, when 263,518 hectares were destroyed. The Ministry of Agriculture's figures show

that there have been just over 5,000 fires this year, as opposed to the 11,678 blazes for the same period last year. Of this year's fires, 27 per cent of the cases (1,345) affected areas of just over one hectare while eight were big blazes, affecting more than 500 hectares.

Meanwhile, the fire-risk map drawn up by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) show that extensive areas in western Spain and La Palma in the Canary Islands are classified as being at very high or extreme risk of fire.

The high cost of corruption Gibraltar may have knocked the corruption case involving the Partido Popular's former treasurer, Luis Barcenas, off the front pages of the nation's newspapers, but behind the scenes experts continue trying to estimate how much such corruption cases cost the country. One expert estimates that it amounts to one per cent of Spain's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Enrique Alcat, who teaches at the IE Business School in Madrid, recently told El Pais newspaper that trying to put a figure on corruption at least helps people understand that it has a direct impact on the economy and everybody's lives: " The money that the corrupt take is money that doesn't go into education and health. What's more, it is putting limits on our growth and the future of our children." José María Mella, the chair of the Economics department at Madrid's Autónoma University, said: "Corruption is slowing down Spain's recovery from the crisis. It generates political

instability; damages the country's image abroad; damages investor confidence; and increases financial uncertainty." He added that corruption devours society's resources, by channelling money away from the majority towards a minority that controls wealth which tends to be well connected to decisionmaking elites. At the same time, it increases poverty, because it reduces public spending and weakens the welfare state, he said. But corruption is not a problem affecting Spain alone. Last month, corruption watchdog Transparency International organised a conference in Lisbon that brought activists from around the world together to assess the global impact of corruption. Its calculations for the European Union were shocking. Between 10 and 20 per cent of public contracts are lost through corruption, and five per cent of Europe's annual spending is not accounted for. A European Commission draft document produced this month

provides a more detailed picture. Brussels calculates that corruption costs the EU €120 billion a year, 1.1 percent of GDP across the 28-member bloc. There are some 20 million cases of small-scale corruption in the public sector each year and, according to Europol, there are around 3,600 criminal organisations operating within the EU.

According to Jesús Lizcano, the head of the Spanish division of Transparency International, corruption is far more pervasive, and far more tolerated, than people would like to think. He said corruption in Spain has always been tolerated, noting that around 70 per cent of the politicians who have been arraigned for corruption were subsequently re-elected in the most recent local elections. Despite all evidence to the contrary, there is some hope. The government-run Centre for Sociological Investigations (CIS) announced last month that corruption is now the second-biggest concern for

Spaniards, after unemployment. A spokesman said: "This is good news, because the more that we are aware of the problem, and are concerned about tackling it, the more likely we are, as a society, to support measures to stop it and to fight our own demons."

Noted jurist Antonio Garrigues Walker is optimistic about the future, despite the general mood of despondency about corruption. He said: "A large number of the scandals are related to the boom years. That doesn't reduce their importance, but what is now clear is that eventually the truth will out, and that we are learning a hard lesson, but a positive one, in how to eradicate corruption at all levels of society. "We are moving toward better times, and the government's new legislation on transparency (which would allow for some scrutiny of the Royal Household's accounts, for example) will help considerably."

Fake “spy chief” gave recruits sex tests

A police officer from Xàtiva in valencia was arrested last week for trying to procure women for his fake spy ring, offering to recruit them if they passed various "tests," including those involving sexual favours. F. H. P., age 56, was arrested by the Guardia civil after passing himself off as the colonel of a secret organisation, luring potential recruits with promises of jobs and salaries of €1,900 a month. The police operation began two weeks ago, when investigators learnt of a man pretending to be a top secret agent, but at first were unsure what his motives were. At his home, police found three firearms and five fake guns, as well as photographs and violent videos, military insignias and uniforms, and telecommunications devices such as electronic agendas and GPS compasses. The suspect showed these items to his victims in order to convince them that he was a spy. The man was arrested on suspicion of theft, fraud, making threats and attempted sexual abuse.

The CIA has released documents which for the first time formally acknowledge its key role in the 1953 coup which ousted Iran's democratically elected Prime UnITeD STATeS ‘Largest-ever guns bust’ in NY Minister, Mohammad Mossadeq.

The documents were published on the independent National Security Archive (NSA) on the 60th anniversary of the coup. They come from the CIA's internal history of Iran from the mid1970s. The US role in the coup was openly referred to by then US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in 2000, and by President Barack Obama in a 2009

speech in Cairo. But until now the intelligence agencies have issued "blanket denials" of their role, said the editor of the treasure trove of documents, Malcolm Byrne. This is believed to be the first time the CIA has itself admitted the part it played in concert with the British intelligence agency, MI6.

The documents were obtained by the NSA

India launches food subsidy programme

The Indian government is to launch a programme to provide subsidised food to two thirds of the population. The food security scheme aims to provide 5kg of cheap grain every month to nearly 800 million poor people. The launch is going ahead even though the controversial Food Security Bill which maps out this welfare scheme is yet to be approved by parliament.

Critics say the scheme is a political move to win votes and will drain India's finances. But India accounts for a third of the world's poor, and supporters say such

assistance will help reduce poverty and hunger. The programme was officially launched in the capital, Delhi, on Tuesday by the head of the governing Congress party, Sonia Gandhi, to coincide with the birth anniversary of late prime minister and Congress leader Rajiv Gandhi. Four other states, ruled by the Congress, also launched the scheme the same day.

Despite impressive economic growth in recent years, India still struggles to feed its population and has more malnourished children than any other country in the world.

under the Freedom of Information Act. Mossadeq was elected in 1951 and moved quickly to renationalise the country's oil production, which had been under British control through the Anglo-Persian Oil Company – which later became British Petroleum or BP. The documents show how the CIA prepared for the coup by placing antiMossadeq stories in both

the Iranian and US media.

The coup strengthened the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi – who had just fled Iran following a power struggle with Mossadeq and returned following the coup, becoming a close ally of the US.

The Shah left power in 1979, when he was overthrown in the Islamic revolution.

Russia battles huge flood More than 20,000 people have been evacuated from flood-stricken areas in Russia's far east, where the Amur river has burst its banks after heavy rain.

The army and emergency workers have set up 166 temporary shelters across three regions, providing drinking water, hot food and medical supplies. The Amur and Khabarovsk regions, near the Chinese border, are worst affected. Both the Amur river and a major tributary, the Zeya, have flooded huge areas in what

is said to be the region's worst flooding for 120 years. The damage so far has been estimated at about 3bn roubles (£58 million).

Russian TV showed footage of armoured personnel carriers and amphibious military vehicles carrying civilians to safety from flooded areas. Soldiers have been deployed to guard abandoned homes to prevent looting. The deluge has also caused widespread flooding in neighbouring provinces of China, prompting mass evacuations.

new York City police have arrested 19 people and recovered 254 firearms in what authorities are calling the city's largest-ever guns bust. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the most prominent proponents of strict gun control in the US, said on Monday guns flow into new York from states that "don't have common sense gun laws," adding that north and South Carolina were among the top three sources of guns used in crime in the city. Most of the guns were purchased by an undercover police officer in 45 transactions since 2012, new York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. PAKISTAn

Charges against 'blasphemy' cleric dropped

A district court in the capital, Islamabad, has dismissed charges against the Muslim cleric who had been arrested on suspicion of framing a Christian girl accused of blasphemy. The imam had accused 14-year-old Rimsha Masih of burning pages from the Koran. Khalid Jadoon was never formally indicted, and as witnesses have now withdrawn their accusations he has been freed.

It had been claimed that he planted pages of the Koran in a bag containing ash which was seized from the girl, who is believed to have learning difficulties. Rimsha and her family had to go into hiding after her release from jail in September 2012. The case provoked widespread international concern about the application of Pakistan's blasphemy laws, and the status of members of minority religions in the predominantly Muslim country. Prosecutors said Mrs Walker, 60, and her husband ran 10 cockfighting events in Oregon in 2012 and 2013. Mrs Walker is the third daughter of King Michael I, Romania's last king who was forced to abdicate in 1947. The couple are among 18 people charged over the alleged cockfighting business. Muslim Brotherhood leader arrested

The spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, General Guide Mohammed Badie, is in custody in Cairo, Egyptian officials said on Tuesday. A state of emergency is in force amid turmoil following a crackdown on Islamists in which hundreds have died. Three days of mourning are being held for 25 police killed in Sinai by suspected Islamist militant extremists. The attack on the Sinai police convoy, close to the town of Rafah on the Gaza border, was one of the deadliest on security forces in several years. Attacks by Islamist militants on the Egyptian security forces have surged in northern Sinai since 2011 – they have been close to daily in recent weeks. The off-duty police officers were reportedly ordered to leave the buses before being shot in the back of the head. Almost 900 people, including more than 100 police and soldiers, are reported to have been killed in Egypt since last Wednesday, when the army cleared protest

camps set up by supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi, many of them members of the Muslim Brotherhood movement. On Sunday, 36 Islamist protesters died in a prison van in the capital, Cairo. Hundreds of members of the Muslim Brotherhood have been detained over recent days.

Mr Badie had been on the run as the military-backed interim authorities in Egypt try to suppress protests at the ousting of Mr Morsi. He is facing charges of inciting violence and murder over the killing of eight antiBrotherhood protesters outside the movement's headquarters in Cairo last June.

Officials and state media said Mr Badie was detained in a flat in Nasr City in north-east Cairo, near the site of one of the protest camps bloodily broken up last week. The arrest comes

Iran leader pledges 'slogan-free diplomacy' Iran's new President Hassan Rouhani has pledged to move away from sloganeering in foreign diplomacy. During the inauguration of his new foreign minister, he said one of the reasons he was elected was to change his country's foreign policy, but added this did not mean Iran abandoning its principles.

The country's outgoing nuclear chief later said Iran has about 18,000 centrifuges for uranium enrichment – of which 10,000 were operational. Iran's nuclear programme has been the subject of a sustained diplomatic tussle with Western powers, who say they suspect it is aimed at developing nuclear weapons. But Iran insists its programme is purely

days after Mr Badie's 38year-old son, Ammar, was shot dead during protests in the capital's Ramses Square.

Meanwhile, a lawyer for former leader Hosni Mubarak has said he hopes his client could be released from prison shortly. He said Mubarak had been cleared of one corruption charge and they were waiting for the court to check whether he still had to be held in custody on other counts.

Mr Rouhani took office on August 4th and so far all but three of his 18 cabinet choices have been approved by parliament. Many of the new ministers have lived or been educated in the West, as has the president himself.

Mubarak is facing a retrial for corruption and complicity in the deaths of protesters during the 2011 uprising which ended in his removal from power after 30 years. While it is still no more than a rumour, analysts say his release would be seen by many Egyptians as a signal that the military is rolling back the changes that flowed from the uprising of 2011.

Radioactive water leak found

Radioactive water has leaked from a storage tank into the ground at Japan's Fukushima plant, its operator said on Tuesday. civilian. Now the new leader – the surprise victor of the elections held on June 14th – has pledged to pursue "serious" talks with the West to ease tensions and in so doing improve an economy hit hard by international sanctions and internal mismanagement.

WEDNESDAY, August 21st 2013

Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) said the leak of at least 300 tonnes of the highly radioactive water was discovered on Monday. The plant, crippled by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011, has seen a series of water leaks and power failures.

The tsunami knocked out cooling systems to the reactors, three of which melted down. Officials described the leak as a level-one incident – the lowest level – on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (Ines), which measures nuclear events. A Tepco official told a press

conference on Tuesday that the water probably leaked from a tank after escaping from a concrete barrier. He said workers were pumping out the puddle and the remaining water in the tank and would be transferring it to other containers. He added that no major changes in radiation levels outside the plant had been observed so far.

The incident comes days after Tepco admitted that as much as 300 tonnes of contaminated water a day was leaking from the damaged reactor buildings into the sea.

Swedish women don headscarves

Using the hashtag #hijabuppropet (hijab outcry) a number of women across Sweden published pictures of themselves in headscarves on Twitter and other social media websites on Monday. This followed an incident on Saturday in a Stockholm suburb, in which a woman was taken to hospital after an attacker tore off her hijab and hit her head against a car. The assailant also shouted racist insults at the woman – who was pregnant. Police are now investigating the incident. Among the protesters were lawmakers Asa Romson and Veronica Palm, and TV host Gina

Dirawi. The campaigners said they wanted to draw attention to the "discrimination that affects Muslim women" in Sweden. The campaigners have called on the government to "ensure that Swedish Muslim women are guaranteed the right to religious freedom".

New European countries’ military spending falls As the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has published in its recent statistics, the new European countries’ military spending has fallen considerably since the beginning of the global crisis which began in 2008.

According to this Swedish Institute, although defence spending has grown in some countries that belong to NATO, countries which some decades ago signed the Warsaw Treaty or that belonged to the former Soviet Union have not seen similar growth in this sector. The motives are not difficult to understand. The global economic crisis has forced many countries to take funding out of the most important areas of their budget and military spending has not been able to escape this predicament.

In the Eastern European countries the military spending has fallen by up to 14% from the spending which took place in the year 2000. But this decline has not followed a linear track. From the year 2000 to 2007 military spending

had been steadily rising until it was stopped in its tracks by the crash of 2008.

Eighteen out of the 31 countries in Europe belonging to NATO have found themselves in a similar situation, take the Baltic states for example – Latvia has decelerated its growth to the point of cutting their expenditure by 50% of their budget, while Estonia and Lithuania have decreased their expenditure by 33%.

Meanwhile Russia’s defence spending is continually growing on a track that has allowed it to rise up to three times more in 2012 than in the year 2000. On the other hand, in the emergent countries that have traditionally shown an increment in their spending, this growth has reached its peak and although there is still some growth it is not as fast as in the beginning of the crisis.

UK News Two British women arrested over alleged drugs smuggling were formally charged in a Lima court on Tuesday. Michaella McCollum, from Dungannon, and Melissa Reid, from Lenzie near Glasgow, both aged 20, are accused of trying to smuggle 11kg of cocaine, which has a street value of £1.5m, according to the police.

On Monday, Ms McCollum's solicitor Peter Madden criticised some of the press coverage of the case. Over the weekend some newspapers had reported on the women's part in the Ibiza drugs scene and questioned their

Accused of raping a ten WEEK old A man and a woman accused of attempting to rape a 10-week-old baby girl have appeared in court.

The 31-year-old man and 23-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were arrested after the baby was admitted to Colchester General Hospital in Essex on Saturday. stories. But Mr Madden said his client "totally denies" those allegations.

Also over the weekend, the head of Ibiza's police investigation into drug trafficking, First Sergeant Alberto Arean Varela, cast doubt on the claims that the women were coerced into trying to smuggle drugs out of Peru, saying they had had several opportunities to alert the authorities. Legal experts in Peru have said the normal

charge in such a case would be of drug smuggling, which carries an average sentence of eight to nine years in prison. If the women are accused of being members of a criminal organisation, they could face harsher sentences. And yesterday, Tuesday, the Peruvian authorities said they were ready to take their cases to the courts and they had CCTV evidence to back up their cases.

They appeared before Colchester magistrates on Thursday morning jointly charged with two counts of attempted rape and three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, relating to serious head injuries and injuries of a sexual nature.

They have also been charged with neglect causing unnecessary suffering. The case was adjourned to Chelmsford Crown Court on October 21st.

British women charged in Peru

The women (pictured right) were stopped while trying to board a flight to Madrid two weeks ago. They claim they were forced by an armed gang to carry the drug, which was in their luggage when they were arrested at Lima Airport. They said they were forcibly recruited as drug mules by the gang while working in bars in Ibiza and travelled to Peru under duress.

DLT accused of assault on nine

David Patrick Griffin, real name of former Radio One DJ Dave Lee Travis, 68 who lives in Bedfordshire, has been charged by the Crown Prosecution Service with 11 counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault. The accusations have come from nine female complainants with their ages at the time ranging from 15 to 29 years old.

The alleged offences are said to have occurred between 1977 and 2007, and include two indecent assaults on a girl aged 15. Four of the women are said to have been adult teenagers, two were in their early twenties and two in their late twenties. However, prosecutors say that they had insufficient evidence to proceed with seven other separate allegations.

The accused, who strongly denies the allegations, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Friday of this week. It has been said that, although he was arrested as part of the ongoing Operation Yewtree, the accusations have no connection with disgraced DJ Jimmy Savile.

Next-of kin can Man steals Ryanair sacks TV pilot now receive from son’s Gibraltar Award cancer fund Ryanair have got themselves in a bit of a tizz after one of its pilots, John Goss, questioned the airline’s flying safety in a television interview on Channel 4.

The company said in a statement last Thursday that they have now sacked veteran pilot John Goss over his “defamatory contributions” when he claimed that many Ryanair pilots did not have confidence in the safety reporting systems of the Irish Aviation Authority.

However, according to Ryanair, the pilot had put it in writing that he had no such concerns with safety just three weeks before he went on TV.

The company has rejected claims from pilots that they are encouraged to carry less back-up fuel and that disciplinary threats make them keep their mouths shut over any safety concerns they

may have. During the interview, Goss said he had received a letter from Ryanair complaining that he had been using too much fuel.

Ryanair has confirmed that they have instructed its lawyers to issue legal proceedings against Goss but the pilot does not intend to make any statement at this time over his sacking and is waiting until he receives legal advice from the Ryanair Pilot Group. It has been reported that Goss has had legal disputes with the airline’s management in the past over union representation for pilots.

Meanwhile the IAA say that Ryanair has a safety record on a par with the safest airlines in Europe.

Both Ryanair and the IAA say that their systems for complaints mean that they are fully investigated and confidential.

His Excellency the Governor, Sir Adrian Johns, has extended an invitation to the next-of-kin of recipients of the Gibraltar Award who are unable to attend the Gibraltar Award Reception on Thursday 12th September.

Sir Adrian said “through our enquiries we have discovered that many recipients of the Gibraltar Award have either sadly passed away or are no longer living in Gibraltar. Where this is the case, or where a recipient cannot attend for other personal reasons, we would like to extend the invitation to their next of kin. This will ensure that, despite their absence, we can still honour and remember the good work of these individuals.” The reception, which will be held in the garden of the Convent at 6.30pm on Thursday 12th September

2013, is intended to celebrate the achievements of all those who have received the Gibraltar Award since its inception in 1957 and to present holders with a yellow silk lapel rosette which may be worn on informal occasions.

The Convent is making a final request for anyone who has previously been awarded the Gibraltar Award (or Governor’s Certificate and Badge of Honour) to contact the Convent on 200 45440 or email their name and address to enquiry.gibraltar@fco.gov. uk

Alternatively, if you know of anyone who has received the Gibraltar Award but is no longer living in Gibraltar or you are the next of kin of a recipient of the Gibraltar Award they would be delighted to hear from you. The Gibraltar Award is awarded to residents of Gibraltar who have rendered loyal and valuable service worthy of special recognition or, who have by their loyalty and meritorious conduct been of exceptional benefit to the people of Gibraltar. The Certificate bears Her Majesty’s portrait together with the name of recipient and a brief account of the services which it commemorates and is signed and presented by His Excellency the Governor of Gibraltar. The Certificate carries with it the right to wear a breast badge (medal) which may be worn on official occasions when full-size medals are worn. This medal is silver gilt with a ribbon of yellow watered silk and bears on the observe Her Majesty’s crowned effigy and on the reverse the Arms and Motto of Gibraltar. Holders are entitled to use the post-nominals “GA” and names of the recipients of the Award are published in the Gibraltar Gazette and are recorded in the Roll of Honour in the Convent.

Kevin Wright, 49, from Qunince, Amington, Staffordshire has been found guilty by a jury of seven women and five men of 10 counts of stealing a total of £171,500 from the Bobby Wright Cancer Fund, a charity that raised money for the treatment of children with cancer, including his own son. He was also found guilty of stealing money from funds he had set up to raise money for cancer sufferers Callum Kaye and Armani Mohammad, both aged three.

He set up the fund in 2005 after his son, then aged three, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma – a rare form of cancer. The jury heard that Wright (pictured above) deposited the money into his personal bank account as "interests, investments and personal lifestyle" including £60,000 worth of Premium Bonds, but also heard that he gave £20,000 to a friend who ran a used car business.

He invested £30,000 in the Royal Oak village pub near where he lived and a further £30,000 to buy the Toad In The Hole restaurant in Exeter where he lived previously.

Wright claimed the restaurant and pub ventures were aimed at promoting natural food and were part of the fundraising, with any profits going back into the appeal funds. Asked why any promotional material did not mention cancer, Wright told the court: "Who would want to go and eat in a cancerthemed restaurant? It's not going to pull people in, it's going to drive them away."

The trial lasted more than five weeks.

Last year a search party of 35 locals and expats searched the area where he was last seen, but one year on there is still no sign of him. He was last seen wearing a grey polo shirt with beige or white three-quarterlength trousers and brown shoes. All he had on him was €10 and his mobile phone. An Interior Ministry spokesman said only Madrid and Barcelona have more organised crime gangs – which usually consist of 11 to 20 people on average. He said there were 30 gangs in Seville, 20 in Almeria, 11 each in Cordoba and Granada while there were less than 10 each in Jaen and Huelva. A spokesman for the Centre of Intelligence against Organised Crime (CICO) said the objective was simply to "ruin them". "We hit them where it

hurts them most, in their pockets", he said. There are six specialised groups in Seville, Málaga, Algeciras and Chiclana (Cádiz) – three Units against Delinquency and Organised Crime (Udyco), two Organised Crime Response Groups (Greco) and one of the Guardia Civil's ECO (Teams

against Organised Crime).

Last year, throughout the country the police identified 442 criminal gangs of which 67 per cent were international gangs.

Fifty-seven per cent were completely dismantled, and 6,460 people were detained.

More memories of Gib

On the verge of collapse

espite several trips to Gibraltar to avoid renewing my permit to stay in Spain with the Guardia Civil – Franco's lackeys and Fascist running dogs as we all believed them to be in those days – my most vivid memory of Gib actually happened in Cadiz.

ast week's testimony before the High Court in the ongoing case against former PP treasurer Luis Barcenas was perhaps the most revealing look at what goes on inside a political party. First, the former Secretaries General Javier Arenas and Francisco Alvarez-Cascos told investigative Judge Pablo Ruz that they had no idea of any separate accounting system existing inside the party but admitted that there was so much money coming in that the lack of controls over what was being paid out was overwhelming. They also denied that they had received money from Barcenas, who has said that he paid them hefty bonuses over the years.

D I S

t was the summer of 1966 and Franco was using Gib, as he often did, to divert Spaniards' attention from the regime's economic problems.

o that nice summer morning as I rounded the corner to get to the Academia Británica where I taught English – after a fashion – I spied some large white letters painted on the street – El Peñon es nuestro" (The Rock is ours). Here we go again, I groaned. I hope Dickybird (my term of endearment for Richard, the poor man who had to run the Academy and try to keep its young, foreign female teachers in line) doesn't expect me to clean that up.

T

he Academy itself was on the first, second and third floor of what had been part of an 18th century palace. We had an atrium, a beautiful sweeping staircase leading up to the first floor with classrooms giving on to the atrium on the second floor. The third floor was an attic where we teachers were expected to live – until I led a minor revolution and found a flat in the town for myself and the other two English teachers.

W

aiting for me in the office that morning was Antonio, a 14-year-old who tended our small bar and ran errands and who lived in a seamier part of the city where most of the medical students lived. Cadiz didn't have its own university but was home to Seville University's Medical Faculty. Antonio was beside himself with excitement, so much so that he even called me Señorita, which I had forbidden him to do. "The students are going to come round later with stones and things to attack the Academy", he said. “Get Carlos on the phone”, I yelled. Carlos was our administrator who worked in a bank during the day and at the Academy at night. Like any Spaniard trying to earn a decent living, he had to hold down two jobs. When we finally got him on the line, I told him to talk to the Guardia to get them to head off the attack. He laughed. “That would be more than their job's worth.” “So what do we do”, I asked. “Pray”, he replied.

W

hat we didn't know then was that several medical students who were studying English at the Academy called a meeting at the Faculty and managed to convince the would-be attackers that "you can't do this to Muriel, Gill and Elizabeth because it's not their fault". Reason prevailed and later in the day the council workers turned up to clean up the street.

I

only have Spanish television so I've been having an overdose of Gibraltar in the past few days. They were really shocked when Gib's First Minister Fabian Picardo told the BBC "Hell would freeze over before he removed the blocks from the bay." I saw that every half hour on Sunday on TVE's 24 Hours channel – there's not much else interesting on Spanish television on Sundays except reruns and films I don't want to watch, so I prefer to overdose on the news. What I hadn't expected was all the memories this coverage would awaken in me.

L

ike the mad turkey. One of my students was a naval captain from Galicia who was stationed in Puerto Santa Maria across the bay from Cadiz. At our first lesson, after he had established we were both descendants of Vikings, he asked me to teach him "bad words" in English and he would teach me bad words in Spanish. One phrase I'll never forget is "Que te folle un pavo loco" (May a mad turkey screw you, to put it politely).

T

hat summer, the French teacher Mayeule, myself and a visiting student from Denmark, Greta, decided to try out a discotheque near the Academy. At the end of the first evening, the owner told me we could have free drinks every night we went there. Of course, three young blonde foreign females attracted the local machos like flies. We took turns at being the disc jockey and danced the night away with all and sundry, but that was all. No hanky panky, thank you. We knew the owner as El Gordo – he was small and very round – and one night he came on to me. I told him "May a thousand mad turkeys screw you." He fell off the bar stool laughing and told me he would call a night club he planned to open behind the Cathedral "The Mad Turkey". And he did just that. Crazy – it could only happen in Andalusia in the Sixties.

he ex-treasurer has testified that he paid out millions of euros in extra pay that purportedly came from a slush fund to top PP officials, including Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, former Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar and current Secretary General Maria Dolores de Cospedal. The money came from fat donations, many of which were made by anonymous contributors, and were later shared among PP members on top of their big salaries. Rajoy and De Cospedal have both denied receiving any illegal payments but have acknowledged that many PP officials get reimbursements and appearance fees "like in any large company".

T

Maria Dolores de Cospedal

hen De Cospedal testified before Judge Ruz. She was willing to come forward, she said, after the judge gave her the opportunity to provide testimony through a video conference call. The Castilla-La Mancha premier revealed that it was Rajoy and Arenas who agreed to continue to pay Barcenas salary after he officially stepped down as treasurer in January 2010.

A meeting was held in March of that year where Rajoy and Arenas hammered out the accord. But she said that she wasn't privy to its details because, for one thing, she wasn't present at that meeting. Barcenas was on the PP payrolls until the end of January this year when El Pais published his now infamous set of ledgers detailing the generous payouts to PP officials and the contributions being paid by some of the country's prominent businessmen. At the time, De Cospedal didn't know how to explain the continuous payments made to Barcenas when everyone had believed that he had left the party.

B

ut indeed De Cospedal's eye-opening testimony demonstrates that Barcenas had a lot of people inside the PP wrapped around his little finger. We now know that Rajoy appears to have feared Barcenas because of what he knows and the damage he can inflict on the PP. The prime minister until earlier this month didn't even dare to mention Barcenas' name in public. Now it seems that the former party finance official, a man who has a lot of knowledge about the internal workings of the party, is now public enemy number one as far as the PP is concerned.

B

ut wheelings and dealings that are conducted far from the public's eye is not just exclusive to the PP. With widespread mistrust in Spain's political institutions, the Socialists and other opposition parties should begin to rid themselves of the shady elements that could also drag them down as it appears to be doing with the ruling political grouping. Such elements can be very dangerous for all political institutions, not to mention democracy because, like Barcenas, they know how much has been going on inside their parties. Each public organisation has someone who poses a danger for the entire group with that knowledge. Barcenas was paid well and was treated very well by his colleagues – a kind of hush money, if you like – to keep him happy. But things did get out of hand and it wasn't just the money that got out of control. The carelessness mixed with too much confidence placed in one person is the catalyst that has put the entire Popular Party on the verge of implosion.

The Phantom of the Opera is here! Mike Sterling arrived in Spain on Monday to prepare to entertain us with some great songs from Phantom of the Opera and other musicals this Friday at Venta Miralmonte on the Coin/Alhaurin road. The show starts at 9.15pm and there are just a few tickets left – owing to more seats being added at the last minute as it was a sell out! The event is being held in aid of the CHAIN animal charity. For more information and to book your tickets call 696 430 160.

Mike has been a professional singer from the age of 14 but has been singing since he was about four years old. His parents ran a hotel in Wales and when a guitarist came in and needed a singer a star was born – singing Elvis Presley songs at his sister’s wedding followed by an appearance on the final of New Faces in 1987 alongside Joe Pascuale.

This is NOT a tribute show. Mike has played many leading rôles on the West End stage and main theatres throughout the UK. With over 1000 performances as “The Phantom” himself and 1500+ as Raoul, Mike’s show is one definitely not to

With artists such as Girls Aloud, Lady Ga Ga, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Bony M, and many more being represented, with dance routines and all in fabulous costumes, the evening should really rock. Saturday 7th September will be a night to remember.

Starting at 7.30pm in the spacious grounds of the Alhaurin el Grande home of T.O.P.S. President, Mick Bradley, the evening will commence with a mouth-watering home-cooked three-course meal, which is included in the ticket price of 15 euros.

This is an absolute disgrace On Saturday 17th August a young disabled man, Simon Blanchard 35 years old, who is staying here on holiday in Coin where his mother lives, attended an open air festival on the outskirts of Coin. He had gone with his stepbrother and family and other friends.

Simon, who is dependent on a wheelchair and needs assistance with his walking etc., had been looking forward to this event as he is due to return to his home in England shortly.

Simon had been at the festival for about three hours and was having a great time with his friends around him when he needed to go to the toilet. Because of his disability his stepbrother decided it would be easier to take him behind his car. He took him to the car in his wheelchair and Simon put his bag with his personal belongings in on the

bonnet. Unfortunately when he had finished they discovered that the bag – containing his camera, passport, money box with 40 euros in, glasses, cigarette box and zippo lighter – was nowhere to be seen. A search was organised straight away and continued the following day but the bag was not found. It is quite distinctive being in camouflage colours.

Simon has been left very upset by the whole incident, not even taking into consideration the problems it has caused physically and financially as he now has to get an emergency passport to get home. He lives independently in England and is saddened to think this could happen to him in Spain, a country he loves to visit where he has made many friends over the years.

If any one can give any clues as to the wherabouts of Simon's possesions please contact his mum on 626 697 727. And, if you have it, GIVE IT BACK!

Travelling with small children Whether parents or grandparents, travelling with children can be hard work, as you tend to have to bring too much with you. It is not so bad when you are driving your own car but at airports and railway stations it can be difficult. Brica has come up with the Roll ‘n Go Car Seat Transporter, the car seat doing double-duty by essentially transforming into a stroller. It is not really intended to replace manoeuvring the pushchair all the time but is more a way to use your car seat for

something useful, rather than trying to carry it around the airport. The device is basically a set of wheels with a frame and handle. Strap in the seat, pull up the grip, and you are ready to go. What is really nice is that the transporter folds down to just two and a half inches thick, and weighs only five pounds. This makes it easy to stow away if you are boarding an aeroplane, and it does not take up much space when storing it at home. www.brica.com www.bibsandstuff.com

Electoral Lux Mundi visit Commission Schooner “Pickle” urges expats to vote

The Electoral Commission will be approaching the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) with the aim of harnessing their resources to encourage expats to register to vote in UK elections. They will also be consulting with local authority Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) about making registration and voting an easier process for expats. This was the message received by a delegation from Labour International Coordinating Committee when they met with officers at the Electoral Commission's headquarters in London on 6th August. The delegation comprised of Lorraine Hardy, Committee Secretary, based in Alicante, Spain, Dalvir Singh from Germany and Dick Smith from France.

Lorraine Hardy said "During the two-hour meeting we made the Commission aware of the many problems expats face of not only being aware that they can vote in UK national elections, but for those that are

aware, in registering and casting their votes. Our delegation made many suggestions for improving the situation. The Commission acknowledged these and we are confident that they will take up these issues with the relevant authorities. Good news for expats is that the period of time allowed for postal voting is now increased to 25 days. Also from 1st July 2014 (unfortunately, after the European Elections) the requirement to have the registration form witnessed by another British Citizen will cease. This initiative by the Electoral Commission is welcomed. After all, other countries seem to be more positive about encouraging their overseas citizens to register to vote in General and Euro Elections. Over 60% of expat French are registered as Overseas Voters, compared to less than 1% of British expats. This is a press release issued by Labour International Costa del Sol dated 15th August 2013

Recently friends of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar and Fuengirola, visited Gibraltar. Thirty-five people from the group joined the organised visit to see the 97 foot Schooner ‘Pickle’, moored in Ocean Village Marina. The original schooner ran aground off Cadiz in 1808, where she still lies today, and the replica – built in Leningrad from the original plans drawn up by the Royal Navy in 1804 – is owned by Mr. Robin James, a descendant of Bonnie Prince Charlie. ‘Pickle’ was present at the Battle of Trafalgar and is famous for its fast return to England, carrying the good news of the English victory and the sad news of the death of Admiral Horatio Nelson.

The friends were welcomed aboard by 1st Lieutenant, Ian Letford, to witness how life was aboard a wooden warship in the Napoleonic Wars. The talk was very instructive, anecdotal and enjoyable and he explained the history of the schooner while the friends handled and examined period weapons, navigation equipment, medical instruments of torture and other items. The schooner can now be

hired for, special occasions when full meals or buffets and drinks are served and it is hoped in the coming year, that Lux Mundi’s friends can join it on board for organised sea trips. Some friends decided to hire a taxi, – drivers are very knowledgeable about the history of The Rock – and take a tour visiting St. Michael’s Cave and the Historic Tunnels while others strolled through the shop lined streets, taking advantage of the Duty Free shopping. The whole group had time for lunch, meeting at Morrisons supermarket where the coach was parked for the return

Live music at Quiz The Olive Tree and Some people think that living inland means sitting out in the sunm or wandering around the “campo” eating olives. Not so in the case of Coin where, every week, The Olive Tree has live entertainment to go along and enjoy.

Appreciated by the residents and those who come to watch the acts, we received this letter from local man Nigel Bowler about one of the recent shows at the venue: “I have watched many bands at the Olive Tree, but last week I went to see an act called Soul Train. They were the best band I have seen so far. Good voices and very entertaining. The bar was packed (I have never seen it so busy!) but with the air-con on it was comfortable inside. I must congratulate Tina, Dave and Wobs for making the bar a great success, given the present financial times. One of the attractions about frequenting The Olive Tree, is to see Dave running around behind the bar. Sometimes all you see is a blur. Obviously a very satisfied customer and he’s one of many you see at The Olive Tree returning for yet another evening of great entertainment. If you’re a coastal dweller, it’s well worth the 20 minutes or so journey up to Coin to watch these acts, or on days and evenings where there is no live entertainment, just come up, have a meal and enjoy the surrounding countryside! Watch their advert on these pages every week to see who is appearing – the return of The Jersey Boys tribute is this Friday. I have seen many acts there and, so far, have not had one duff evening and, as Nig says, “you won’t be disappointed.” Kym Wickham

Dark side of Mr. Caine

By Amy Thomas

Any comments?

M

ichael Caine is one of my favourite actors and a national treasure. He seems to be a genuinely nice guy and his attitude to his profession is rare and admirable – it’s a job. Unfortunately, because of this work ethic, Caine’s presence in a movie does not necessarily mean it’s a good film. He readily admits to accepting parts in dire “B” movies just for the pay cheque.

El ysi um Directed by Neil Blomkamp Starring: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Alice Braga

It’s the year 2154 and two classes of people now exist. Those who have it all – wealth and access to medical advancements that can cure any illness, and live on a paradise-like space station called Elysium. And the havenots, who are consigned to the dustbin that is now Earth, where poverty, crime and illness reign.

And of course, those who live on Elysium have no intention of sharing their happy existence with anybody else, and are determined to protect their lavish lifestyles and enforce strong

immigration laws to ensure that only the select few can gain access. But down on Earth, when excon Max (Damon) is exposed to a lethal dose of radiation and has only a few days to live it’s imperative that he learns about the medical advances that exist for the few – and if he succeeds for himself he might just succeed in bringing equality for all. His dangerous mission pits him against Elysium Secretary Delacourt (Foster) and her hard line forces and the scene is set for powerful all action scenes and stunning

DVD NEW RELEASE

Release date: August 20th

Director: Michael Haneke Starring: Emmanuelle Riva, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Rita Blanco Georges and Anne are a couple of retired music teachers enjoying life in their eighties. However, Anne suddenly has a stroke at breakfast and their lives are never the same. That incident begins Anne's harrowingly steep physical and mental

moralising front, but it works equally well if you ignore the allegory and view it as one of the summer’s last blockbusters which delivers an exciting tale of the downtrodden rising against oppression. And remarkably it runs a lot less than two hours!

decline as Georges attempts to care for her at home as she wishes. Even as the fruits of their lives and career remain bright, the couple's hopes for some dignity prove a dispiriting struggle even as their daughter enters the conflict. In the end, Georges, with his love

fighting against his own weariness and diminished future on top of Anne's, is driven to make some critical decisions for them both.

This film won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year 2013.

T

he plot is simple. Harry Brown (Caine) is an army vet, living in a rundown apartment block on a ‘rough’ estate. His wife is ill in hospital and he spends most of his time looking out of his window, observing drug deals, criminal behaviour and mindless violence. His wife passes away and shortly afterwards, when his only friend (David Bradley) is murdered, the police show little interest in solving the crime. It is this culmination of events that provokes Harry into vigilante mode, serving out his own kind of justice on the yobs.

T

his film makes the ‘70s Death Wish films of Michael Winner look like a walk in the park! It is a very dark film, almost sepia like, with the only brightness in the police station interior. But it is a dark film on many other levels and I found the violence quite shocking and horrific!

N

o, I don’t have double standards. I do write

glowing reviews of violent Tarantino films and Mafia movies, but here’s the thing … that is make believe movie violence. Tarantino’s violence is over-the-top comic book stuff, and Mafia movies are fairy tales for grown-ups. (Wouldn’t it be great if a connected guy took care of our boss/ex/worst enemy like that!) But as normal human beings with a conscience we could never really live like that.

I

don’t know why British film makers refuse to lift people’s spirits. “Riff Raff”, “Nil by Mouth” to name just a couple, are good films but, oh my, how uncomfortable they are to watch!

O

ccasionally a “one time only” view movie will come out of the States. Your buddies aren’t going to come to your place with popcorn and six packs to kick back and watch Schindler’s List on CD, but is seems the majority of British movies, excellent as they might be, are just not for repeat viewing.

A

nd so, back to “Harry Brown”. Was it a good film? Yes, it was indeed. Did I like it? No, I absolutely hated it. I never enjoy social commentary dressed up as entertainment and being left feeling sickened, angry, or just plain sad.

T

he film may have one good use. If any of you British people living out here are having second thoughts about staying and thinking of returning to England’s “green and pleasant land”, take a look at Harry Brown and I guarantee you’ll be unpacking quicker than you can say “Easyjet”!

This will help to improve your life conditions whilst keeping you grounded in facts. Pay attention to your daily purchases and agreements, this ensures the gains you make will be long lasting and increase in value. There is a lot of hard work still to be done so make sure you prioritise your tasks. By your very nature you are steady and strong, a survivor and the only thing that can throw you off your game is too much emotion, the last thing you need is to become slushy and unsteady right now. Surrender to your feelings, go with the flow and you will keep afloat this week.

A solid plan with some passion in your heart is all you need to get ahead. Something may happen faster than you think as there is an opportunity to create a sea of change in your life. It is better to listen more than to speak this week as others can reveal a lot of facts that you were not aware of. You could find that your family or those close to you need you to be around for them for strength, leadership and support. You are forever on a mission to improve and perfect what lies within you and what is surfacing around you. This week you will have to exercise some blind trust in a situation for someone that has an uncertain outcome. Something inwardly will be driving you as you feel compelled to trust in this instinct. The material side of your life is very much on your mind and you will be paying close attention to expenditure.

WEDNESDAY, August 21st 2013

Do not let anyone or anything break your faith this week, if things were to happen easily or be given on a plate they probably would not be appreciated as much. Keep going as things will eventually work out in your favour. This is a time for constructive and productive effort and if you remain positive you are well able to achieve and accomplish all that you wish and hope for.

Unplanned changes could come out of the blue and you will have to adapt accordingly, you will find it easier than most but there will be others around you that may need a bit of a push to go with the new flow. No matter what life throws at you, as long as you believe in yourself, no matter how deep or emotional things become, you can rise above and have the confidence to get through it, this act of faith, inspires others.

There is electricity in the air, exciting changes are on their way, in fact your world can turn around within a couple of hours. You are about to free yourself from something that has held you captive and it will feel like you have finally found the right exit on the motorway that never seemed to end. You seem to have a deep understanding into what is happening and why and can sense what is also likely to happen.

Someone from your past who may have been defensive towards you softens and changes their tune or someone new enters your world and it feels as if a light has been turned on inside of you. It is your connections with people that change everything; you need those around you with a like mind so that you can share ideas and discuss interests. A bigger picture is looming and you will be picking up the clues that reveal the whole over the next couple of weeks. You may become privy to some information that changes the way you think, giving you good reason to believe that things are going to go your way. Once you find the missing link, one small but profound detail, it will make a monumental difference. Elements of the past are likely to re-appear and this will give you some clues as to how all events are tied together to lead you in a new direction. Your physical strength and endurance is high right now along with passion and desire.

Tech YouTube lines up its News latest hit A major YouTube mobile update allows people to browse other videos while watching, to search and watch playlists, and to queue videos on connected devices. Google began a slow rollout on Monday of a major update to its YouTube app for Android, with other mobile YouTube app updates coming later. A Google representative said that the slow rollout was intentional and not a leak of the app's installer file, or APK. YouTube 5.0 for Android includes several features to make the app more like watching YouTube on the Web and, in some cases, surpass the Web experience. Google confirmed that the updated YouTube app is expected to reach the Google Play store sometime on Tuesday morning. YouTube for iOS is also expected to update soon. In addition to the new logo and the redesigned interface that cribs heavily

from Google's new "house style," the app features three main new features. You now can swipe down while watching a video to keep playing the video while browsing for other videos. It shrinks the video to the lower right corner, while the main browsing interface takes up the rest of the screen. Swiping up restores the video, while swiping left or right will close the video. Another major new feature is that you can browse and play video playlists in the app. As YouTube inadvertently became the Internet's unofficial jukebox, playlists have become one of

the site's most popular options. Also new in the YouTube app is that you can queue up playlists, just like on the Web site. Video queuing is now available on connected devices that use the Cast button, such as the new Chromecast, Google TV, and PlayStation 3. When you're streaming a video to a connected device with the Cast button, you'll be able to browse and either play your selected video immediately or queue up another one to watch next.

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Calvin,

I have very curly hair and when you blow dried my hair and used straighteners it was fabulous. My hair was really shiny for days. Would it be worth my while investing in a pair and if so how do I achieve the professional finish? Jo Mijas, Pueblo Dear Jo,

Straighteners, when used properly, are great for relaxing curl and adding shine, as they smooth the cuticle of the hair. When using straighteners always use a heat protective spray as constant use of

straighteners without the spray leaves the hair vulnerable to breakage. The best results will come by taking small sections of the hair, rather than going over larger sections. When using keep the straighteners moving in a downward direction.

Never stop at one section as this will burn the hair. (The same as if you leave an iron on clothes.) By keeping a downward motion the cuticle of the hair is smoothed down and produces your shine. Hair is similar to wood if you go against the grain it will become dull and dry looking, so it's very important to go with the grain for smooth shiny hair.

At this time of year we all sweat more as our body works very hard to cool us down. Nature designed our bodies to produce hair under our arms (and elsewhere) to collect and trap the sweat, which helps us be attractive to the opposite sex. Fashion and personal preference means many remove this hair and as the sweat is no longer trapped it may appear your husband is sweating more than he used to. el

Dear Barbara,

I assume you are talking of aromatherapy oils, which can be very beneficial, however there are many of these oils which should never be applied directly to the skin. They always need to be diluted and this is usually done by mixing a few drops in a carrier oil. If you use this directly on your face the carrier oil may cause your skin to feel very oily. Always consult a qualified aromatherapist as to which oils are suitable to use, they have a very penetrative effect and remain in the system for a long time.

Alternative ways to use them include burners (designed to put a few drops of the oil in the upper part and a tea light underneath), adding a few drops to your bath, or placing drops on a tissue or pillow so you can breathe them in. Do avoid these oils if you are pregnant unless you have consulted your doctor. Many products from the good cosmetic houses have natural oils in them but at a safe level, so you get all of the benefits without any worries.

Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip

Sir Paul McCartney will get his titles back from 2018, with most of them by 2026.

Beatle is to get back rights to his songs

… but will he be happy now? With his vast fortune it doesn’t seem to make him so most of the time Under the 1976 US Copywrite Act laws Sir Paul McCartney will regain the rights to the songs he wrote prior to 1978 including ‘Let It Be’ and ‘Yesterday’. The former Beatle is said to have been fuming for decades after losing out on a bid for the rights which saw Michael Jackson pay a reported £31 million for them. The pair were firm friends when they recorded ‘Say, say, say’ in 1983 but the friendship went south after Jackson outbid McCartney for the rights to his songs over 30 years ago now. And he was further “disappointed” when the Thriller star didn’t leave the rights to the songs to him after his death in 2009. The Act dictates that the songs written before 1978 return to the song-writer after 56 years meaning that Sir Paul will get most of them back by 2026

when he will, once again, be able to earn royalties and licensing money, starting in five years’ time for songs written earlier. McCartney, now 71, who has a reported fortune in the region of £680 million, spent decades furious every time he had to pay royalties to Jackson when he performed one of the songs he had written with the Beatles saying: “The annoying thing is I have to pay to play some of my own songs. Each time I want to sing Hey Jude I have to pay.” In 2005, Sony paid Michael Jackson $95 million for 50% of the rights. McCartney recently admitted he sometimes has to remind himself to concentrate on stage. He loves performing for his fans and still enjoys singing the iconic songs which made him famous. However, as they are so familiar to him he occasionally becomes aware that he isn't paying as

much attention as he should be. "It's scary, because sometimes I suddenly wake up in the middle of a show and think, 'Concentrate man! Come on, you've got an audience here!'," he laughed to Q magazine. McCartney says he is often amazed by how talented he was at such a young age. The cool lyrics make it more exciting for him to re-live his youth through his tracks. "It's like time travel. Singing ‘Eleanor Rigby’ and thinking, 'Keeping her face in a jar by the door,' that's a pretty cool turn of phrase," he admitted. One wonders with a head that big how he manages to fit through the door to his dressing room at a gig and, after his recent off-key performances that were positively embarassing to some, perhaps it’s time to retire with the extra money he’ll be getting.

Stuntman dies in Faithfully recovering accident in Swiss Alps

Mark Sutton. You probably won’t recognise the name but he was the 42-year-old former British Army officer stuntman who parachuted into the 2012 Olympic Stadium in London dressed as James Bond during the opening ceremony spectacular last year, wowing everyone who watched it. Sadly, Mark died in an accident last week when he hit a mountain ridge in the Swiss Alps at a speed of up to 125mph during a wingsuit freefall from a helicopter near Mont Blanc.

Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting director Boyle, who directed the opening ceremony at the Games, said Mr Sutton's death was "a huge loss to his profession".

He said: "In a brilliant partnership with Gary Connery, they made the stadium gasp at the

The 66-year-old actress and singer, famous for dating Mick Jagger in the 60s and her top 10 hit, “As Tears Go By”, has said that she was “sad” to have to cancel the shows to allow her heal and apologised for her noshow.

The sacrum is a triangular bone at the base of the spine that attaches to the pelvis. She spent 4 weeks in hospital but is now recovering at home in Paris.

The period of healing will also mean recording of her next album will be delayed.

In a statement aimed at fans in Beirut, she said: "I have never been to the Lebanon though I know it through books. It looks like one of the most beautiful places in the world. I still hope to be able to come one day not too far away when I'm completely healed and have my dream to sing in Beirut come true." Faithfull, who appeared in the film “Girl On A Motorcycle” has been dogged by ill health. When a couple move into their new home to prepare for the arrival of their first baby, a leak dripping through the ceiling leads to a shocking discovery - a decomposed body in the loft of the flat above them. According to Michael and Vidya's neighbours, no one has lived there for years and the previous occupant, Melissa, hasn't been seen for some time. DI Len Harper sets out to make his last week before retirement count for something by investigating the case.

John Graham As an old-time journalist what I find so disappointing is how readily today's writers, broadcasters, editors and even senior British Government figures slip into rah-rah reportage and commentary on the present Gibraltar frontier problems, ranting about such high-level political issues as "what the EU should be doing" and with a variety of belligerent propositions as to why the Spanish Government is strutting around as it is. Yet there is hardly even the scantest mention of what I had understood was

the trigger for the supposed present problem: the laying down of the artificial reef the Gibraltar authorities have sunk to protect fish stocks from reckless fishing. And the proposed dreadful impact this will have on the livelihoods of the La Linea fishermen. I do not pretend to know anything notable about Gibraltar's new artificial reef. But I have seen totally authoritative references to the fact that the Spanish authorities themselves have seen it necessary and reasonable to sink some 20 effectively

Thid Thomas There are many people who would like to sell their properties at realistic prices. However, the Estate Agents still insist on putting their commission of 5% plus IVA on top of the vendor’s asking price. My property has been on the market for a while. One particular Estate

identical artificial reefs of their own along local coastlines, for exactly the same conservation-of-fishstock reasons. I therefore would find it more to the point for journalists and editors to describe what Madrid is up to as out-and-out, arrant and contemptible HYPOCRISY alongside whatever else they may want to write … and I am just so sorry it isn't being said very, very clearly and very, very loudly. I think it's something local people would quite like to hear more loudly.

commission was reduced to 1.5%, surely this would help people who are trying to sell their property and also help the Spanish economy. This letter has been composed by several vendors who share the same thoughts.

I do hope that you can help me better than my computer can. The simple question is as follows: I am retired and claiming the married couples allowance on my U.K. Pension. My wife is younger than me and doesn't receive a pension. I would like to know how much she can earn before it affects our married allowance, as the booklet from the pension department states that it

will be affected if she earn more than a certain amount. Needless to say, it does not say what the amount is and neither does the internet. PLEASE HELP! Also she has been offered a lump sum from a pension fund, would this sum affect the situation in any way as it is tax free? I would like to say thank you for any trouble that you have gone to in answering this email.

Brad Woolfenden Coin I was not surprised to read the latest press release from Coin townhall. (Page 11, 7th August)

Regarding the "recycling plant" which was cloaked as local news. A few questions spring to mind -: 1) How is planning permission acquired for large industrial works in a

protected rural area with no road access? 2) Why would anyone invest 15 million euros in a large industrial plant to serve a non-existent construction industry. Is this man the great philanthropist Coin has been waiting for? Something doesn't sound right to me!

T

hroughout the whole of the Universe, the stars are not just sprinkled around but instead are all grouped into galaxies. Galaxies contain billions of stars and there are an infinite number of galaxies. Collectively there are more stars in the entire Universe than there are grains of sands on every beach in the world.

I

f you were asked to count every grain of sand then eventually you would be able to come back home and say ‘there are X number of grains of sand’. But if you were asked to count all the stars in the Universe then you would never return home with the answer, ever.

G

alaxies are huge. We are talking hundreds of thousands of light years across. They also come in various shapes but the most common shape seems to be a spiral galaxy. A spiral galaxy looks a bit like two fried eggs placed back to back with a central bulge containing a dense area of stars. It then has several ‘arms’ spiralling out from the centre and gradually thinning toward the edges.

W

e live inside a galaxy; that is the Sun, the Earth and the whole solar system of planets. It is believed that our galaxy is also a spiral galaxy. It is between 100,000 and 120,000 light years across and contains over 600 billion stars. Our solar system is located about 27,000 light years or three quarters the way out from the galactic centre in one of the spiral arms.

B

ut we can only make an educated guess at all this because obviously we can’t see the whole of our galaxy. The only way to see the whole picture would be to travel outside the galaxy and look back upon it. But

W

alas the only people who have been able to do this are heroes in sci-fi movies (so far).

hen we look into the night sky we can see a myriad of stars but this is only a tiny fraction of the actual number of stars. In fact if our galaxy were shrunk down to only one metre across then every star that you can see with the naked eye would be in a circle less than 5mm across. The majority of the other stars are simply too far away to be seen without a powerful telescope.

B

ut, although we may not be able to distinguish individual stars, further out in the galaxy their combined mass does create a ghostly image running right across the sky that we call the Milky Way. If you happen to live in a very dark area far from town and city street lights, then at this time of the year the Milky Way can be seen directly overhead stretching from horizon to horizon.

W

hen we look at the Milky Way in the sky we are looking directly into one of the spiral arms from our galaxy. It is believed that the centre of the galaxy lies in the constellation of Sagittarius. We can’t actually see the centre of the galaxy simply because there are too many stars in the way. It’s a bit like saying you can’t see the forest because of the trees. But by using highly advanced radio telescopes a strong radio signal has been detected coming from this area.

Marquez continues to dominate in MotoGP Marc Marquez extended his lead at the top of the MotoGP World Championship to 21 points with an impressive win at the Indianapolis Grand Prix.

Marquez started on pole but fell behind Jorge Lorenzo after the reigning champion produced a fine start. But Marquez, 20, overtook his fellow Spaniard with 15 laps remaining and coasted to victory, with Dani Pedrosa coming second and Lorenzo in third. Britain's Cal Crutchlow put in a battling display but finished fifth. Valentino Rossi just squeezed past Crutchlow before the finish line after the pair were involved in a thrilling tussle that also involved Alvaro Bautista.

Marquez, who has finished on the podium in every race he has completed this year, becomes the first man to win all three rounds in the United States. A third straight win strengthened the Repsol Honda rider's grip in the standings with eight races remaining. Pedrosa overtook Lorenzo with two laps remaining to inflict more damage on Lorenzo's hopes of retaining his title, although both men continue to be hampered by injury. Lorenzo claimed that he was forced to drop his pace due to a worn rear tyre and was happy to finish. He said: "I lost second place in the last two laps because the tyres from one lap to the next made a big drop.

"I almost crashed so I had to slow my pace and finish without crashing. We did a good race. Third position, no crash and lots of points." It was a spectacular start and finish for rookie Bradley Smith. The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider shot from seventh to fourth on the opening lap behind only title fighters Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez. However rear grip problems then saw him plummet to tenth by lap 6 of 27, where he remained until the final turn of the race. It was then that Smith's persistence in keeping

Wiggins to quit road for track Britain's Bradley Wiggins says he will quit road racing at the end of next season in order to return to the track. The 2012 Tour de France winner, who already has four Olympic titles, said: "I'm going to continue to the next Olympics and try for a fifth." Wiggins, 33, also also said "It would be nice to finish the career with another Olympic gold." He was unable to defend his Tour de France crown in 2013 because of injury but wants to ride it one more time.

pace with Factory Ducati riders Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso paid off. The pair clashed on entry to the start-finish straight, allowing Smith to pass them both as the trio charged for the line.

“Obviously, the start was mega, up into fourth at the first corner, so I'm really happy with that performance,” said Smith. “But we had a rear-end problem. From the second lap, it just got gradually

worse and worse. Unfortunately, these types of things are out of your control. It's one of those things.”

Wiggins acknowledged that making a return to the Team GB track line-up would not be easy. "Having lost weight and muscle the last few years I wouldn't be able to walk back into the team pursuit

squad, so I'm not taking anything for granted, but I am working towards that."

Having previously indicated he may never compete in the Tour again, he said he would like to take part in 2014 if selected by Team Sky. He also suggested he was willing to support this year's winner Chris Froome. "I don't mind admitting that Chris is probably a better Grand Tour rider

than me," Wiggins said.

"He is a much better climber, he can time-trial well. (At 28) he has age on his side, he has no kids, that's fine. If Chris wants to, he could potentially win five Tours now.”

Europe’s ladies retain Malaga start new season Solheim Cup in America with defeat at Valencia Captain Liselotte Neumann hailed Charley Hull as a "special girl" after she helped Europe win the Solheim Cup in America for the first time.

Valencia 1 - 0 Malaga The new era at Malaga started on Saturday night at The Mestella with a new-look team and new Manager Bernd Shuster.

Hull, 17, set the tone with a 5&4 victory over Paula Creamer in the singles, having beaten the former US Open champion in Saturday's fourballs.

Neumann, 47, said: "She was on my junior team two years ago and she's just a special girl."

Europe beat the United States 18-10 to defend the title they won in 2011. Kettering-based Hull only turned professional this summer and was one of six European players making their debuts in the matchplay tournament. Neumann, from Sweden, added: "She has a special game and she brings a lot of energy to our team and she's just a terrific player. She plays in a fearless way and it was just awesome to have her on our team and I think we

all love Charley."

Hull's youthfulness was summed up by her getting Creamer to sign her ball for a friend after the win.

She told BBC Sport: "My friend James is a big fan of hers, so I thought I may as well get her to autograph the ball. “ Sweden's Caroline Hedwall, so impressive

in the 2011 victory at Killeen Castle in Ireland, became the first player in the history of the trophy to win all five of her matches when she beat Michelle Wie with a birdie on the 18th to give Europe an unassailable 14-7 lead.

17 year old Charley Hull

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips Mike from Coin emailed about a hand he was involved in on one of the online poker sites. He says it was a 9-handed 5€ sit-andgo turbo tournament, Mike wrote: “ The blinds were at the 3rd level and in the small blind I found myself with AK. The first to act put in a raise of 4xBB and was a tight player, playing few hands so far. A player in mid position then 3bet him followed by a snap all in by the player after him – both these players were playing loose and aggressive. I

folded my AK and the first raiser folded and the 3better called. They turned over JJ & QQ but the annoying thing was the Qs held but an A fell on the flop. Was my fold good or not?”

If you had 10bb or less this would be an automatic call regardless of anything, however you do not mention your stack size so we can presume it was average. The fold in my opinion was correct, even though you would have won the hand. Let’s look at why this fold was correct without

taking the result of this hand into our thinking. First of of all, we are out of position in the SB – the worst place to play any hand from in poker. We have a raise, a 3 bet then a 4 bet all in so we have to put at least one of these on a high pair with AA or KK a good possibility – which with AK we don't want to meet. We also want to be heads up with AK and do not forget we are racing with any pair from 22 to QQ so we lose a lot of win equity with a pot of three or more players. You would have won the pot this time but if you run this hand through Poker Stove your win equity with three players is under 40%, so you’re going bust 6 out of 10 times, you have fold equity and no call equity... Good Fold! If you would like to comment on this or any other hand, or discuss any poker points please email wayne@bolsa-fiesta.com

With a team comprising of five new signings Malaga started reasonably well. Angeleri headed just wide from a Duda cross after just five minutes. The first half was mainly about containment as Malaga created little up

front but looked comfortable in defence. Rami squandered a free header for Valencia, heading over, and at the other end Angeleri failed to connect properly with another header for Malaga.

The Valencia goal when it came was a disaster for Malaga´s keeper, a looping cross was fumbled in the box and Costa stabbed the

ball home on 64 minutes. The response from Malaga never looked like amounting to anything and the game petered out leaving Valencia to take all three points.

The hard start to the season gets even tougher as the mighty Barcelona visit La Rosaleda next Sunday, kick-off at 9pm. Report by Scott Forbes

Mo Farah relishes 'sweetest' victory at World Athletics Mo Farah said his 5,000m victory was his sweetest yet as he completed a dream 'double-double' at the World Championships in Moscow.

Farah, 30, sealed a thrilling gold six days after winning the 10,000m. The double Olympic champion became only the second man after Kenenisa Bekele to win both longdistance crowns at the Olympics and the World Championships. "It was definitely the sweetest, by far," said Farah, who revealed he overcame a stitch during the race. "I had a stitch from about eight laps to go and I was kind of pushing my stomach in, but then the pace slowed down and I tried to forget about it and come through," he added. "My legs felt all right, but they were a lot more heavy than the rest of the guys."

Farah broke the European 1500m record last month and was confident he could out-kick his rivals. "I thought the race would have gone harder, but it suited me," he said. "I was confident, from having run a fast 1500m and a couple of other fast races, that if it came down to the end I would be able to come home strong. "You've got to respect the other guys, but you just want to be able to keep winning."

Farah and his American training partner Galen Rupp were the only two athletes attempting the double of 10,000m and 5,000m, leaving their fresher rivals with a

distinct advantage. Victory took Farah's tally of global gold medals to five, having also won the 5,000m two years ago in Daegu. Farah said:

"It's amazing, only the great Kenenisa Bekele has achieved so many things. To be able to achieve what he has achieved is just an honour.”

The only thing now missing from Farah's resume is a world record. Bekele holds both over 5,000m and 10,000m with times of 12:37.35 and 26:17.53 respectively.

NEBS Golf Society at La Cala Twenty-one players made the trip to La Cala to play the last match together in this society. The NEBS Society was founded and run by Terry Birtles, who is now going back to the U.K. for an unknown period of time. As a result the Society will be disbanded for a while. Terry is a close friend of mine and I and all the members will miss him lots. More importantly, I have lost my drinking partner. I and all the members wish Terry, Allison and Cerys a safe journey and success in any future ventures they seek. God bless you.

The Scores were as follows. Nearest the pin hole 8 Adam Robinson, hole 11 Dave Wrigglesworth, hole 14 Ian Vaughan and hole 16 Mike Brian. Nearest the pin in two shots on hole 3 Ian Vaughan. Longest drive on hole 18 Nick Carwood. Best team with an average score of 34.6 points was Adam Robinson, Luke Robinson and Warren Burton. In third place and with a score of 36 points was Charles Randell, in second place and a score of 40 points was Adam Robinson and in first

place and a score of 42 points was Hiekki Kontinen. In last place with 10 points and the winner of the plunger was Mike Brian. Thanks for turning up Mike. Best guest with 42 points was Luke Robinson.

As always the members and guests would like to thank Terry Birtles for organising this and all previous events and Tina and the staff at The Olive Tree in Coin for the food supplied, putting up with us and their service. Nig Bowler

Red Bull end talks with Raikkonen

Daniel Ricciardo is now set to secure the second Red Bull Formula 1 seat for 2014, with talks between the team and Kimi Raikkonen having come to an end. Amid growing speculation that Red Bull had decided to pick Ricciardo, Raikkonen's manager Steve Robertson said on Monday that the Finn was no longer a contender to line-up alongside Sebastian Vettel next year. Robertson confirmed the news, which first appeared in Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat, that the former world champion's discussions with Red Bull had come to an end.

Goal Decision System Brazil World Cup makes successful bow Tickets go on sale It did not take long for the Goal Decision System [GDS] to make its Barclays Premier League bow with Chelsea's opening encounter against Hull City proving the clearest example of the successful implementation of the new technology. GDS, the camera-based goal-line technology system provided by Hawk-Eye, was introduced for the first time in the Barclays Premier League this weekend and on Sunday proved effective in assisting the match officials to make a correct decision at Stamford Bridge. In added time at the end of the first half Branislav Ivanovic met Frank Lampard's corner with a powerful header which visiting goalkeeper Allan McGregor saved on the goal-line at the second attempt.

The referee's watch only buzzes when the ball crosses the goal-line, and as Jonathan Moss and his team of match officials felt no vibrations, no goal was awarded. Using a dedicated high speed camera capable of removing the players from the image to ensure the

ball is fully visible, HawkEye's subsequent video replay of the incident, which was broadcast on the big screen at the ground and on television within 10 seconds of its taking place, showed that the whole of the ball had not crossed the goal-line.

There were no protests from the Chelsea players, and their manager Jose Mourinho, fourth official Andre Marriner and Hull ‘s Steve Bruce shared a laugh

about the matter at the end of the half. GDS also came into play at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday when a shot by Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph beat Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny only to strike the inside of the right-hand post and roll across the line. Replays on the big screens in the stadium and on television again showed that referee Anthony Taylor had no cause to award a goal.

Tickets for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil went on sale on Tuesday, with fans able to apply on Fifa's website.

Fifa is expecting a similar demand to Germany 2006, when there were about seven applicants for every ticket of the 64-match tournament. Around 3.3 million tickets will be

available for the tournament. Tickets will range in price from £58 (US $90) for first-round matches to £632 ($990) for the final at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazilian citizens over 60, local students and members of some social programmes can purchase tickets for £23 ($15).

Hope Powell sacked as England women's manager The 46-year-old had been in charge since 1998 but was criticised after England were eliminated in the group stages of Euro 2013 last month. England lost two matches and drew one in Sweden – their worst performance at a European Championship since 2001.

Powell's England were losing finalists at Euro 2009 and reached the World Cup in 2007 and 2011, when they reached the quarter-finals. But following England's early

exit in Sweden, Powell was criticised for picking injured and out-of-form players. Former England internationals Faye White and Sue Smith both questioned whether Powell should remain in charge for the 2015 World Cup campaign. Powell responded by saying the domestic game needed more investment if the national team wanted to compete with leading nations.

The Final Test: The Oval, London: August 21st-25th, 11:00 UK time Kevin Pietersen is expected to play for England once again after a scan on his troublesome right knee showed no further damage. Chris Tremlett is expected to start at his home ground as Tim Bresnan and Graham Onions are both ruled out injured, though Steve Finn and Chris Woakes are also in contention for the spot. Offspinner Simon Kerrigan is also in the 14-man squad, and the selectors may just opt for a second spinner to partner Graeme Swann on what is normally a superb batting track. For Australia, Shane Watson is a doubt with an injury problem that could prevent him from bowling and therefore possibly puts his place in jeopardy, but Brad Haddin has said that he expects Watson to play. Spinner Nathan Lyon will be one of the first names on the team sheet while Mitchell Starc will return to the side after missing out in Durham. Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle are likely to take the remaining bowling spots, though Jackson Bird is a possibility. After another poor outing for Australia against the England Lions, Usman Khawaja's number spot seems likely to be claimed by Phillip Hughes.
