Spain 'must follow EU law' on border checks

Spanish checks at the border with Gibraltar must "fully respect EU law and remain proportionate", the European Commission said on Monday. Tensions have escalated after increased vehicle searches caused major delays for tourists and locals. Vehicles were delayed for up to seven hours at the end of July because of stricter checks by Spanish border guards "to prevent smuggling". The European Commission said Gibraltar was not part of the passport-free Schengen zone and therefore Spain was "obliged to carry out

checks on persons and on goods", but must abide by EU law. It said in a statement: "The commission urges both Spain and Gibraltar to allow for smooth and efficient border crossings while taking into account these obligations." The commission said it had received assurances at the beginning of 2013 that border checks would be "proportionate", but said it had suggested "a technical meeting with the Spanish authorities in order to

address the issues raised by the border checks, including the alleged excessive waiting times".

In an interview with the ABC newspaper published on Sunday, Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said Spain was considering charging people a new 50 euro (£43) fee to enter and exit Gibraltar through its border post. Gibraltar has linked Spain's tough stance to the creation of an artificial reef in waters off Gibraltar.

Last month, Gibraltar dropped 70 concrete blocks into the bay to create the reef, but Spanish fishermen, who trawl the area for shellfish, say the move has prevented them from working. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Spain 'must follow EU law'

ICKHAM’S

By Kym Wickham

What is the matter with everybody these days? We know people who, the weekend before last, decided to “pop” down to Gibraltar for a day out and to get a few things – then sat in the queues for, in one case 5 hours and in the other 7 hours getting out. Spain has now announced that they are “considering” charging a €50 levy to cross the border. And that’s €50 each way! So it could potentially cost you €100 for a quick day out that, I would think, nobody in their right mind would be doing. It seems to me that this is all about sovereignty of The Rock and getting people’s minds off the appalling state that Spain is in. Well, the people who live on the Rock have made it clear, in no uncertain terms, they want to stay British. If the Spanish insist on carrying on with all this, most of the people they are going to hurt are their own who go across the border to their jobs on Gib. It’s not like they can say: “Oh, well, never mind I’ll get a job in La Linea.” Hellooooo ... there are no jobs in La Linea for them so all they’re

going to do is either make their own people go hungry or have an awful lot more on their dole. Good idea eh? As Del Boy used to say: “Plonkers!”

On a happier note, Saturday saw my second Salsa class at the Wellington Centre in Coin. This week my husband came too and, although he felt like giving up after five minutes, kept on for the two-hour class and did better than me at it in the end! Don’t you just love some people... Baby dog, Jackson is doing well, I’ll tell you more soon.

Spanish authorities said the blocks had been laid "without the necessary authorisation", and the proceeds from the border fee could be used to "help fishermen affected by the destruction of fishing grounds". David Cameron is reluctant to get involved in the minutiae of the reef dispute, feeling that it would be better dealt with at EU level. Mr Garcia-Margallo also hinted at the introduction of other measures, including tax investigations into property owned by Gibraltarians in neighbouring parts of Spain, and the closing of Spanish airspace to flights heading to Gibraltar. Mr Cameron said none of the measures had been raised

with the UK government, while Mr Picardo has accused Spain of "sabrerattling". He told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: "What we have seen this weekend is sabre-rattling of the sort that we haven't seen for some time. The things that Mr García-Margallo has said are more reminiscent of the type of statement you'd hear from North Korea than from an EU partner. "We've seen it before during Franco's time during the 1960s but I think all of us hoped that those politics were never going to come back and that the much more enlightened politics of Mr Miguel Ángel Moratinos, who was the previous but one foreign minister of

PM admits 'mistake' over scandal Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy admitted to MPs last Thursday that he had made a mistake in trusting a disgraced former colleague, but he said claims he was corrupt were "lies and manipulations", and again defied calls for his resignation. Rajoy made a special appearance before MPs to give his version of

the so-called Barcenas affair and to report on the economy. He said claims that the threat of a noconfidence vote had "dragged" him into Parliament were without substance. "Parliament can hold a vote of no confidence without the prime minister being present", he noted. In opening remarks, he

Even if Rajoy did not respect parliament, he said, "he should respect the intelligence of Spaniards". "You must go, Mr Rajoy," he said. Representatives of other parties later denounced the president's claims that he knew nothing of wrongdoing by Mr Barcenas, saying their relationship was too close to make such a claim credible.

An invisible summertime Banks ignore customer danger Experts who know about the ill health effects of tropospheric ozone – also known as low-level ozone or bad ozone, as opposed to stratospheric ozone, which filters ultraviolet radiation –want to know why the authorities do not do a better job of informing citizens about pollution levels when they exceed safety thresholds. Federico Velázquez de Castro, a doctor in chemistry at Madrid's Complutense University and author of several studies on ozone said the way the government is neglecting the issue is a cause for concern: "Pollution information is extremely important because it saves lives." Velázquez de Castro took part in a study that examined the relationship between heat and mortality in Seville: the analysis showed that higher ozone

concentrations affected men more than women because they spent more time outdoors. Low-level ozone is a secondary pollutant, forming when other toxic gases (mainly nitrogen oxide emissions from vehicles) react with solar radiation. Spain, like other Mediterranean countries registering high temperatures and many hours of sunlight, is particularly exposed to low-level ozone pollution in the summer. A report by the European Environment Agency using 2012 data showed that Spain was the EU country that most often surpassed recommended levels of this gas. It appears far from the car exhausts in city centres – in city parks, on the outskirts and even in outlying municipalities. The green group Ecologists in Action has for years been asking local

complaints

governments to inform citizens about pollution levels in real time. In Madrid, they suggest signboards similar to those about traffic jams.

People with respiratory problems are most at risk from high ozone concentration at ground level, and should be especially alert to information about environmental pollutants. Legislation makes it mandatory for authorities to inform citizens when a certain threshold is reached, which in the case of ozone is 180 micrograms/m3. Above that value, it is considered a health risk. At those times, local and regional authorities often recommend via their

websites that at-risk groups such as children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems refrain from exercising outdoors.

Spain tops the European charts for ozone pollution. In 2012, it surpassed the health risk threshold 168 days out of the year, ahead of other hot countries such as Italy (163 days) and Greece (151 days), according to the European Environment Agency. The EU estimates that from 2001 to 2010 between 15 and 61 percent of the continent's urban population was exposed to excessive ozone levels. Citizens breathe polluted air without even realizing it.

With banks under fire for abusive mortgage clauses, evictions and mismanagement, their high-handed treatment of individual account holders was revealed by the Bank of Spain last week.

Last year 43,647 cases were lodged with the Bank of Spain’s complaints department, a 20.7 percent rise over 2011 and an historic high, according to the department’s annual report.

The Bank of Spain issued 2,838 rulings in favour of the complainant in 2012, of which only 519 were subsequently resolved. In 82 per cent of cases the Bank of Spain’s decision was ignored by the lenders. The Bank noted in its report: “The number of rectifications on the part of the banks does

not even reach a fifth of the total, which is clearly unsatisfactory.”

The situation has caused the regulator to also lose patience with the banks. The report stated: “The department is going to closely monitor this situation, especially in those cases where indications of serious or reiterated breaches of transparency and customer protection are evident. These instances will be handed to the inspectorate.”

5th straight month

Unemployment figures for July show that the number of people out of work dropped for the fifth straight month in a row– by 64,866 – and 32,890 more workers registered with social security, the Labour Ministry announced last Friday. The unemployment figures have not dropped for a similar consecutive period since 2007, but the

number of new social security affiliations is the second worst figure since the crisis began in 2008. Compared with June, the number of unemployed dropped by 1.36 per cent, to stand at 4,698,814. However, it is still unclear whether this trend will continue after the high tourist season ends in September. Seasonal jobs make up most of the

positive data, with more hirings in the service and construction industries. The ruling Partido Popular praised the latest figures in a statement in Parliament, saying that the government labour reforms were working. But the country's largest unions, the CCOO and the UGT, warned that jobs were only being created through temporary and short-term contracts.

Rare trade surplus as exports surge Spain posted a trade surplus for only the second time on record in May as the exports continued to thrive and imports remained weak because of low consumer demand caused by the ongoing recession.

According to figures released on Wednesday by the Bank of Spain, the

surplus in May stood at €704.6 million, compared with a deficit a year earlier of €1.424 billion. Exports rose by 9.9 per cent over the same month a year earlier to €21.856 billion while imports declined 0.8 percent to €21.150 billion.

The bank said the surplus was a result of a good performance by the

non-energy sectors of the economy. Thanks to the trade sector, the country also booked a current account surplus of €2.400 billion in May, compared with a deficit of €625.0 million a year earlier. The current account measures the balance of goods, services and transfers exchanged with the rest of the world.

Child rapist freed in Morocco arrested in Spain A Spanish child rapist freed from a 30-yearsentence in Morocco last week has been arrested in Spain, officials said on Monday. Daniel Galvan Vina, who had been freed as part of a broader royal pardon, was detained in Murcia. Galvan, believed to be in his sixties, was among 48 Spanish prisoners pardoned by the king last week, at the request of King Juan Carlos during his visit to Morocco

the previous week. Moroccan officials said Galvan's release was a mistake, and King Mohammed had been unaware of the nature of his crimes.

The king has since sacked the head of prisons and rescinded the pardon. Galvan was convicted of raping 11 children, aged between four and 15, and sentenced to 30 years in prison in September 2011.

Dozens of people were injured in violent confrontations between hundreds of protesters and police outside parliament in the Moroccan capital on Friday.

Demonstrations were also reported in the cities of Kenitra, Tangier and Tetouan, as well as outside the Moroccan embassy in Paris. A statement released by the royal palace on Sunday said: "The king was never informed – in any way or

at any time – of the seriousness of the abject crimes of which the person concerned was convicted.” “It is clear that the sovereign would never have consented" to his release, given the "monstrous crimes" committed, the statement concluded.

Galvan was transferred to Madrid to appear before the High Court on Tuesday, which will oversee the case.

Princess to move to Switzerland King Juan Carlos's daughter Cristina is moving with her children to work in Switzerland, her employer said, two months after a court named her in a corruption case against her husband. Cristina, 48, a manager in the social programmes

foundation of the Catalan finance group CaixaBank, will now work in Geneva on its joint projects with UN institutions, the foundation said in a statement. The princess is expected to move shortly so that her four children can start school in Geneva in September. Her

husband, Inaki Urdangarin, will remain at the family's home in Barcelona until the investigation into his business affairs is concluded.

Urdangarin and his former business partner Diego Torres allegedly embezzled €6 million in

public funds meant for sports events. The money was allegedly placed in the non-profit Noos Institute, which Urdangarin chaired from 2004 to 2006 and of which Cristina was a board member. Neither she nor Urdangarin has been formally charged with any crime.

Fake Ferrari car racket busted

the police have broken up a gang that converted ordinary cars to resemble deluxe Ferrari models and sold them on the internet. in raids on two garages near Valencia, they arrested eight people suspected of converting and selling the cars and seized 19 cars – 17 fake Ferraris and two imitation Aston Martins. the police said: "the supposed deluxe cars were advertised on two websites for about €40,000, compared to the more than €200,000 that an authentic model would cost on the legal market." the suspects "themselves made the fibreglass pieces to transform the cars" and faked the badges of the deluxe models to complete the job. the final appearance of the supposed deluxe vehicles – in their external and internal design and even in the details of the engine – simulated to perfection the look of the original models.

Government subsidy scheme boosts car sales

new car sales picked up again in July as a result of the government’s direct subsidy scheme to underpin a market undermined by weak consumer spending in the second recession in four years. According to figures released last week by the industry associations Anfac, Ganvam and Faconauto, the number of new vehicle registrations rose 14.9 per cent in July, reducing the fall in sales in the previous six months to 2.1 percent. the government’s PiVe subsidy plan allows for subsidies of up to €2,000 for individuals and companies that scrap older vehicles and purchase new, more environmentally friendly ones.

Egypt talks gather pace as US senators arrive

US senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham joined top diplomats in Cairo on Monday evening for two days of negotiations to find a peaceful solution to Egypt's political stalemate.

Both senators have made several trips to Egypt since the country's revolution in 2011. Before heading to Cairo, Senator Graham warned that the Egyptian military must back out of politics quickly or risk a cut of the $1.3 billion in aid that it receives from the US each year. Egypt has been in crisis since the army ousted leader Mohammed Morsi on July 3rd. Mr Morsi, a Muslim

Brotherhood member, has been formally remanded in custody at an undisclosed location, according to a judicial order. Several prominent Brotherhood figures were arrested in a crackdown on the Islamist movement following Mr Morsi's removal.

Thousands are taking part in sit-ins and protests in Cairo demanding that the deposed president be reinstated, putting the

Brotherhood in a difficult position. Ending the protests could alienate its own grassroots supporters, while letting them continue might further alienate the Egyptian public and increase the prospects of a violent end to the demonstrations.

More than 100 Morsi supporters have been killed in clashes with security forces. At least 80 died in a single incident

near Rabaa al-Adawiya on July 27th.

A presidential adviser has denied reports that the new interim government was prepared to release leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood from custody and offer the group ministerial positions if they called an end to the sit-ins. Mr Morsi's supporters have repeated that they will accept nothing short of his reinstatement.

NZ firm 'sorry' Snake strangles for product scare two children

The boss of New Zealand dairy firm Fonterra has apologised for the distress caused to parents because of a scare over contaminated products. Theo Spierings was speaking in China after it emerged on Saturday that batches of whey protein contained bacteria that can cause botulism, an extremely dangerous form of food poisoning. Mr Spierings said the problem only came to light after tests in March this year. He said bacteria from a dirty pipe at a processing plant for whey protein concentrate

had been found in three batches of whey protein which had been used in Nutricia Karicare for infants. The contaminated whey protein concentrate was exported to China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Saudi Arabia. So far, no related illnesses have been reported. China relies heavily on New Zealand for its imports of milk powder. Nearly 80% of dairy products imported by China come from New Zealand, the world's largest dairy exporter.

A snake which escaped from a pet shop has killed two children in the Canadian province of New Brunswick, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said on Monday. In a statement, they said they believed the reptile had strangled two boys, aged five and seven, who were staying overnight at a friend's apartment above the pet shop in Campbellton. The police were called to the address on Monday morning where the two boys were found dead. Their statement said: "The

preliminary investigation has led police to believe that a large exotic snake had escaped its enclosure at the store sometime overnight, and got into the ventilation system, then into the upstairs apartment." The serpent, believed to be an African rock python, has been captured by police. Campbellton's deputy mayor, Ian Comeau, said the incident was a "tragedy". "The city is in shock," he added. Experts say attacks by exotic snakes are extremely rare.

About 100 homes have been evacuated in Louisiana after a derailed train wagon leaked toxic chemicals. The wagon leaked sodium hydroxide, which can be lethal if inhaled, a Union Pacific railways spokeswoman said. More than 20 train wagons went off tracks west of Baton rouge at 15:30 local time (20:30 gMT) on Sunday. The engineer and conductor were not hurt. Air pollution was not detected. The extent of the damage would be known soon, state governor Bobby Jindal said. It is not yet known what caused the derailment. raquel espinoza of Union Pacific said another damaged wagon was carrying vinyl chloride, but it was not leaking. 'Baby sold by maternity doctor' rescued

Police have rescued a baby boy allegedly sold by a maternity doctor, the state-run newspaper China Daily reported on Monday. The baby, born in Shaanxi province, was found early on Sunday in neighbouring henan. A DnA test was conducted to confirm his identity. The paper said the doctor, surnamed Zhang, told the baby's parents that he had serious congenital diseases, and convinced them to entrust him to her care.

The parents went to the police after they suspected they had been tricked. Ms Zhang and a man and women suspected of selling the baby have been arrested. The paper said Ms Zhang sold the infant for 21,600 yuan (£2,300) to the other two, who sold him to another buyer for 30,000 yuan (£3,100). Local police are investigating five similar cases said to have occurred in the same hospital. UrUgUAy

Same-sex marriage bill comes into force

Same sex couples will be allowed to apply to marry in Uruguay from Monday, nearly four months after a bill was approved by the country's Congress. About half a dozen couples should apply for dates at civil registry offices in the coming days, activists say.

Following Argentina in 2010, Uruguay became the second South American nation to pass same-sex marriage legislation. Across Latin America, the number of countries allowing gay unions or marriages is growing. In Colombia, a judge recently ordered a notary to sign a document which – while not being a marriage certificate – in effect gave a same-sex couple the same rights as heterosexual couples. Last week, Colima became the latest Mexican state to allow civil unions among gay couples.

Interpol issues global security alert

Interpol has issued a global security alert linked to suspected al-Qaeda involvement in recent prison breakouts.

Interpol cited prison escapes in Iraq, Libya and Pakistan, and asked its members to examine whether they were connected. The police agency is also asking member countries to "swiftly process any information linked to these events".

In the most recent escape, 248 prisoners were sprung from a jail in north-west Pakistan. Taliban militants used automatic weapons and bombs to break down the walls of the jail in Dera Ismail Khan on July 30th. At least 13 people were killed, including six police. The authorities said 30 of those who fled were "hardened militants" jailed for involvement in suicide bombings and other serious attacks.

Hundreds of inmates escaped from two jails in Iraq – Abu Ghraib to the west of Baghdad and Taji to the north – on July 22nd. Bombs and mortar

fire were used to break into the prisons. Al-Qaeda members were among those housed in the facilities.

Five days later, some 1,200 inmates broke out of a jail in the in Benghazi in Libya. The France-based agency said: "With suspected al-Qaeda involvement in several of the breakouts which led to the escape of hundreds of terrorists and other criminals, the Interpol alert requests the organisation's 190 member countries' assistance in order to determine whether any of these recent events are coordinated or linked."

It also calls for Interpol to be informed "if any escaped terrorist is located or intelligence developed which could help prevent another terrorist attack". Interpol's alert comes after the US State Department issued a global travel alert because of fears of an unspecified

al-Qaeda attack.

A spokesman said on Friday that the potential for an attack was particularly strong in the Middle East and North Africa.

The US global travel alert was based on information from intercepts of electronic communications between senior al-Qaeda figures, according to officials quoted by The New York Times. The state Department said the alert expires on 31st August

2013 and it recommended US citizens travelling abroad be vigilant. Earlier, the US announced it was shutting nearly two dozen embassies and consulates in the Muslim world on Sunday.

It has since announced that it will it will keep a number of embassies in north Africa and the Middle East closed until Saturday, due to a possible militant threat. Britain closed its embassy in Yemen on Sunday and Monday as "a precautionary measure".

Boston bomber 'had rightwing extremist literature' One of the brothers suspected of carrying out the Boston bombings was in possession of rightwing American literature in the run-up to the attack, according to the BBC's Panorama programme. discovered that It Tamerlan Tsarnaev (right) possessed articles asserting that both 9/11 and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing were government conspiracies. Another one was about "the rape of our gun rights". Reading material he had about white supremacy commented that "Hitler had a point". He also had literature which explored what motivated mass killings

and noted how the perpetrators murdered and maimed calmly. Until now the Tsarnaev brothers were generally seen as nothing more than self-styled radical jihadists.

The FBI has been investigating the brothers, and possible connections Tamerlan might have had in the troubled Russian republic of Dagestan which he visited last year. The House Intelligence Committee in Washington is being briefed on his connections.

The committee chairman, Mike Rogers said he believes the brothers' mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaev, was involved in his radicalisation.

Texas 'running out' of execution drug Texas is running out of a key drug used for lethal injections. Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark said that the state's supply of pentobarbital would end in September.

Texas has the highest execution rate in the country, with 11 inmates put to death so far in 2013. Some drugs companies have objected to their products being used for capital punishment. Texas has used pentobarbital, a drug used to treat severe epilepsy, in executions since July 2012.

The state was forced to change to the single-dose sedative when supplies of sodium thiopental, one of three drugs used previously, were cut off. But state officials are now having difficulties with availability of the pentobarbital, which is also typically used to put down animals. The state is

planning at least five more executions this year. Mr Clark said Texas was confident it would be able to continue with the deaths, despite the shortage.

Richard Dieter, who heads the Washingtonbased Death Penalty Information Centre, said other states would be having similar problems. "The states really scramble to go all over to get drugs,'' he told the AP press agency. "Some went overseas, some got from each other. But these manufacturers – a number them are based in Europe – don't want to participate in our executions. So they've clamped down as much as they can." Texas is reported to have executed more than 500 death row inmates since 1982 – this is the highest of any US state. Virginia came in second with 110.

Berlusconi stands by broad coalition

Some of the backers of former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi want him to force an election to end the uneasy coalition between his centre-right PDL party and the left-wing PD party but he told a rally on Sunday that he gave his support to the current coalition: "We have said loud and clear that the government must go forward to approve the economic measures that we asked for and were agreed. "What drives us is not our personal interests. Always the interests of everyone and of our

Italy come first."

The Supreme Court upheld a custodial sentence for Mr Berlusconi last week and the 76-yearold is due to serve one year in custody starting from October. Under Italian law, people over the age of 75 rarely go to prison, so he is likely to be held under house arrest or given a community sentence.

Although Mr Berlusconi has been hauled before the courts dozens of times, last week was the first time he had received a definitive conviction with no chance of further appeal.

British airline Ryanair has told its pilots to fly a little slower to save fuel. If aircraft stay below 600 mph it will add two minutes to every hour of flying but slash the fuel bill by 15 per cent.

The airline says fuel makes up nearly half of the airline’s costs and blames a six per cent rise in fuel costs for a decline in first quarter profits to £67 million.

Cider drinkers hit out at excessive tax

A new campaign was launched to get a better deal for cider drinkers at the Bristol Cider Festival over the weekend, where it was announced that almost a quarter of the price you pay for the drink goes to the taxman. They are calling on the Chancellor to abolish the Cider Duty Escalator, which increases the cost of cider every year above the rate of inflation, amid concerns over job losses at cider makers. A petition has been raised and it will be presented to the Chancellor George Osborne. The campaign has the support of a number of MPs, including Ian Lidell-Grainger, chairman of the All-party Parliamentary Cider Group.

The violin was discovered by the police intact, with some very minor damage but in its original case. They know who stole it, but not who handled it.

Min-Jin Kym, 32, who made her debut with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra at the age of 13, had received a sixfigure settlement from an insurance company and she has indicated that she wants to buy the violin back from the insurers.

Breach of rights

A couple who had their caravan stolen by travellers have been told by the police that the travellers now living in it cannot be removed because it would breach their human rights! The police said they had no lawful powers to get it back and the only option open to the couple was costly civil proceedings against the family now living in it. Michael Curry and his partner Kathleen McClelland had spent £30,000 on the caravan and had fitted it with a wide screen television. Mr Curry, 53, was diagnosed with diabetes and had to give up his job as a long distance lorry driver. The couple are still making payments on the caravan.

Hague re-affirms Plucky Bethan British commitment gets her arm back to Gibraltar William Hague spoke to Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo on Tuesday, and reiterated the UK’s commitment to the people of Gibraltar. The Foreign Secretary said: “I emphasised to Gibraltar’s elected Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, that the UK stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Gibraltar at this time of increasing Spanish pressure and rhetoric. I also highlighted that we will respect Gibraltar’s 2006 Constitution and the commitments the UK has repeatedly made not to

compromise on British sovereignty over Gibraltar. We discussed the need for a political solution to the current tension with Spain, which would be firmly in the interests of communities on both sides of Gibraltar’s border with Spain. I call upon Spain to respect the agreements made at Cordoba and to avoid actions which could increase tension further. We agreed that it was important to respond to actions, not rhetoric, and I confirmed that we would continue to raise our concerns with Spain.”

Bethan Evans, who lives in Llangadfan, near Welshpool with her parents and eight-year-old sister Amy, is a very brave and very lucky young lady.

Last year the youngster’s parents noticed a lump on her arm on her fifth birthday in January last year. The lump turned out to be a cancerous tumour known as Ewings Sarcoma which is a rare bone and tissue cancer that affects around thirty UK children each year. Surgeons explained to parents Lynne, 37 and a supply teacher, and her father that they would have to “temporarily amputate” Bethan’s left arm at the shoulder so that it could be taken to nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham that specializes in radiation therapy for the limb to be treated with intense radiation to kill the tumour before removing it. The arm was then re-attached by 10 medics in an 8 hour

operation at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.

Bethan had to undergo a gruelling eight weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy before the operation to shrink the 6and-a-half inch tumour. Her parents didn’t tell her what was going to happen before the operation, just telling her that when she awoke, the lump would be gone. They never used the word cancer for fear that it might scare her. However, her reaction after the op when it had been done was: “Cool!” Bethan is now looking forward to returning to school next month and skipping with her friends following many months of physiotherapy to strengthen the arm. She isn’t bothered about how her scar looks but is wary of people touching the arm, only allowing mum and dad to hug her at the moment.

Two dead, one seriously injured in shooting Two men have died and a third has been seriously injured during a shooting incident at Meadowhead Farm near East Kilbride, Lanarkshire at just after 8am yesterday, Tuesday.

It is understood that one of the dead men is the owner of the farm, 59year-old Peter Thompson and his 36-year-old son, John has suffered a leg injury. He had left the scene to drive to a nearby pub to raise the alarm and was found by police on the road. His injuries, although said to be serious are not expected to be life threatening. A further, as yet unnamed man aged 53 was found dead in a nearby vehicle. He held a

firearms licence.

A floral tribute left at the scene read: "RIP Peter. A true gentleman. You will be sadly missed." And there have been messages of condolences left on Facebook.

The farm is an equestrian centre offering riding lessons and treks. It was reported that Peter Thompson had been involved in a row over plans to expand the centre with very strong objections being put forward over an access road.

Police say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and the public are not at risk.

New eye test campaign heats up According to a new campaign, drivers on UK roads should be made to have regular eye tests to ensure that they can see while driving. Road safety charity Brake , together with the DVLA and insurer RSA, are calling on motorists to visit the opticians at least every two years believing that this could cut road casualties by up to 3,000 every year. It is already an offence not to make sure that your vision meets legal standards for the road but many that were questioned said that they knew they should be wearing glasses to drive but don’t, or that they had never visited an optician. The only requirment at the moment during a driving test is that you must be able to read a registration number on a car 20 metres away, after that there are no checks on whether or not you have sight tests regularly. Cassie McCord, from

16,

Colchester, was killed when a car mounted a pavement and hit her in February 2011. The 87-year-old man driving it had failed a

police eye test just days earlier, but officers had not been able to persuade him to hand over his licence.

The ensuing investigation led to the four men who are alleged to have warned drug traffickers of impending raids on several occasions in exchange for money.

Turning the tables

M

ariano Rajoy must be heaving big sighs of relief these days – those pesky opposition politicians gave gone off on holiday until the end of this month and the Gibraltar border checks are currently dominating the headlines. So stories about former PP treasurer Luis Bárcenas have dropped off the front pages for the first time in six months.

R

eactions to Rajoy's appearance in Parliament last Thursday have varied. Pro-government dailies (two in all) said Rajoy had won the "mano a mano" with opposition leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba while the proSocialist dailies (all the rest) trotted out the same old accusations – all of which repeat word for word those that Bárcenas has been making. Rubalcaba so faithfully parroted the latter that La Razon newspaper called him "Rubalbárcenas". If that catches on, it could mean the end of Rubalcaba's political career, which is not tipped to survive the Socialist Party's next major meeting to decide how to elect their candidate for the 2015 general elction.

I

watched Rajoy's address to Parliament and I thought he put up a good performance. In fact, he gave Rubalcabas a thorough verbal pounding, throwing back things he said when he was Interior Minister:

1

“There are those who want to convert Parliament into a huge police station. That's absurd." Yet that is exactly what Rubalcaba has been trying to do for the past six months.

2

“It is the judges who decide if the allegations are true." Yet Rubalcaba has accepted Bárcenas's allegations as the word of God.

3

“We must remind the opposition to respect the presumption of innocence and not use lies and unfounded suspicions, not to say infamy, as a political weapon." Yet for Rubalcaba, Rajoy is guilty and must prove his innocence, and he's been using lies and unfounded suspicions as his only political weapon for the past six months.

R

ubalcaba sat stony-faced throughout it all and never have I seen such a sorrier-looking bunch of Socialists as those who sat through Rajoy's perfectly delivered speech last Thursday.

F

or one political observer, proof that Rajoy had won that particular round was that

Rubalcaba and all the other Socialist MPs sneaked out of a back door after the session was over to avoid the press, while Rajoy and his people walked calmly out through the main door.

B

ut the comments that surprised me most came from Justino Sinova, writing in the very proSocialist El Pais. At the beginning of his blog titled "Al borde del k.o." (On the edge of KO) Sinova admits his conscience is making him disagree with the paper's editorial line, which supported Rubalcaba. But, Sinova said, the parliamentary session which had been touted as the end of a fight with the foregone conclusion that the Left was going to deliver the final fatal ax blow turned out to be anything but that. Sinova said Rajoy had delivered a well structured speech in which he admitted his mistake but affirmed that he had not committed the crime of covering up for a suspect (Bárcenas), while denying the latter's accusations – as false, based on half truths and his interpretations of half a dozen truths. He reminded the opposition that the onus of proof was on the accuser, not the accused and criticised the climate created by the opposition – "the Socialists are not interested in my explanations, they only wanted me to come to Parliament to resign". He then went on the offensive against his main accuser (Rubalcaba) – "you never appeared in this Chamber to explain the Faisan case (a scandal involving the Basque terrorist group when Rubalacaba was Interior Minister) even though the PP and the other political groups asked you to do so more than 40 times".

R

ajoy ended his speech saying quite firmly that "I am not going to resign or call early elections." The only thing he didn't do was thumb his nose at Rubalcaba, who brought nothing new to the session, except the endless repetition of Bárcenas' accusations. Although in a way he did thumb his nose – by pointing out that all the threats about a no-confidence were so much hot air, because parliamentary rules made it possible for such a vote to be taken without the presence of the PM – "So you didn't drag me here after all," Rajoy said.

P

www.thenewsonline.es

erhaps now we can look forward to a few weeks of peace and quiet – but that leaves me with one big problem. What on earth am I going to write about until all those pesky politicians return to make life miserable for all of us? I suppose I can always take a few pot shots at Venezuela, which is still refusing to give me the pension they owe me!

Martin Delfín

Dodging responsibility Writes for the English language version of

W

e don't know what is worse: admitting many months after the fact that he made a mistake without assuming responsibility, or keeping quiet and letting the whole judicial process play its course as the prime minister tried to do when his party's former treasurer, Luis Bárcenas, began floating allegations about the extra bonuses he paid out to members of the Partido Popular. Mariano Rajoy finally opened up last Thursday before Congress in what was a tense but historic session in which a head of government admitted for the first time he placed too much trust in his former treasurer who indulged in still questionable dealings."I made a mistake, I was wrong to trust this person we now know could not be trusted," he said. It was the first time since the entire case broke against Bárcenas in 2009, when he was first provisionally charged in the Gürtel inquiry, that the prime minister has made reference to his one-time close confidental colleague, a man he personally appointed to head the party's finances during that heated PP convention in 2007 in which Esperanza Aguirre tried to oust him from leadership.

B

ut the fact that he has admitted to what he says was a mistake in trust doesn't solve the image problem that the ruling party is facing. The PP’s approval rating has dropped by more than 12 percentage points over the past few months. And the opposition Socialists continue to reiterate that they will still reserve their right to call for a non-confidence vote, which no doubt will be backed by the opposition parties. Rajoy has accused the Socialists of wanting to destabilise Spain with their demands for a vote of censure.

P

P lawmakers are clamouring victory over Rajoy’s appearance, saying that his explanations to the Spanish people about Bárcenas were sufficient. But there are many questions that remain, and the former treasurer intends to bring out more evidence concerning the financial dealings inside the party when he continues to testify before the High Court later this month.

A

s for Rajoy, he won’t resign but his international image as a serious conservative leaders is being shattered. Even The Economist wrote last month: “Mr Rajoy’s refusal to take responsibility for his party’s dirty secrets does

nothing to regain voters’ trust.” And that growing lack of confidence is something that Rajoy will never be able to contain.

A

Crisis in Morocco

bureaucratic blunder last week, that led to the release of a convicted paedophile through a royal pardon, thrust Morocco into its worst political crisis since King Mohamed VI came to the throne in 1999. A 63-year-old Spaniard, Daniel Galván Viña, was one of the 48 inmates serving time in Moroccan jails who were granted pardons by the king in his annual gesture to celebrate the anniversary of his investiture. Galván was convicted in 2011 and sentenced to 30 years in prisons for abusing 11 children in Morocco – it was the worst child abuse case in the country’s history. Two lists had been made for the king’s consideration by the Spanish Embassy in Rabat.

T

he first contained the names of 30 Spaniards who were just seeking a transfer to serve out their sentences in Spanish jails; the other listed 18 inmates who asked to be granted full pardons. Galván’s name was in the former. But someone at the royal palace in Rabat mixed the two lists and King Mohamed approved a blanket of pardons for all 48. When it was discovered that the notorious Galván was released, the news set off waves of protests across the nation this past weekend which were quickly put down by riot police.

or the first time, King Mohamed had to explain to his people that a mistake had been made and he didn’t know the seriousness of Galván’s crimes. Then, in an unprecedented move, the pardon was revoked and an international warrant for Galván – who by now was back in Spain – was issued. The convicted paedophile was captured in Murcia on Monday and appeared before the High Court yesterday. The head of the Moroccan prison system was fired, and now Moroccan authorities are anxious to meet with their Spanish counterparts to ensure an embarrassing situation like this will never happen again.

Keep summer safe Most people have home and contents insurance but, with the weather being as hot as it is and everybody leaving doors and windows open to try and cool things down, did you know that if a burglar slips in through that open window, you may not be covered by home insurance? So, if you’re planning to enjoy the summer at home here in Spain, or going abroad, take a few precautionary steps to help protect your home and possessions.

Anti-burglary tips

Close outside doors and windows. Even if you leave a room for a few minutes, make sure the windows and doors to the outside are closed and preferably locked. Turn on your alarm. Heading to the supermarket for picnic supplies? Make sure you punch the code into the keypad. Insurance companies may not pay out if you "forgot" to turn your alarm on. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, even if you’re only popping out for 10

minutes. Lock up any garden items. Summer is a great time for DIY, gardening and barbecues, but thieves can – and do – steal garden equipment that’s left lying around. So leave pricier items like lawnmowers, outdoor dining sets, bicycles etc., locked away in a shed or garage. Don't make it easy for burglars. Don’t leave anything lying around that a burglar could use to gain access to your property – like tools to break open a door or window, or a ladder to gain access to an upstairs window. Home insurance claims have been denied because burglars used an unsecured ladder to get in. Don’t hide spare keys outside. Burglars know all the tricks and all the hiding places – so leave that spare key with a neighbour or friend rather than under that flowerpot. Don’t stay away for too long. If you do, try and get someone to sleep over for part of the time you’re away. A lot of home insurance policies require that a property is not left empty for lengthy spells –

typically 30 days. So if you’re lucky enough to be away for that long, try and get someone to stay in your home for at least one night during any 30 day period in order to keep your home insurance valid. Read your policy small print to find out the exact vacancy period limit. Clear the letterbox if you have one. Letters and circulars poking out of your postbox is a sure sign you’re away. Ask the neighbours to keep an eye out for this while you’re not here – burglars will be on the lookout for any obvious clues to an empty home. Put your dog on a diet. If a dog flap is large enough for a burglar to fit through, your home insurance policy might be voided in the event of a claim. Make sure you secure any such entry points before heading off on your hols. Double check that everything’s locked. You may be racing to the airport or rushing for the train, but make sure you check all windows and doors are locked and the burglar alarm, if you have one, is set before you go.

RDMC - your first stop for all your glass needs

RDMC'S is a family run business with over 189 years of combined experience in the glazing, construction and steel industry.

We are specialist manufacturers of glass curtains and stainless steel. We use only the highest quality materials including 316 marine grade stainless steel so as not to cause corrosion problems. We have our own glass toughening machine which means that the complete glass curtain system, including the glass, is manufactured under one roof. We also manufacture UPVC and aluminium windows and doors. We can manufacture roofs including sliding (electric or manual), complete steel structures, acoustic glass for bars, mirrors, table tops, sealed units, splash backs, shop fronts, shelves, walk on glass, stairs, glass balustrade, pool surrounds – in fact we can assist you with all your glass needs. The glass curtain system that we manufacture is a German system called Sunflex. It is typical of German design – much time and thought has gone into the system making it one of, if not the best system available on the market today. This system is completely different to other systems that are similarly priced. Sunflex is top hung which means that the weight of

the glass is distributed evenly and not all sitting on the bottom, rubbing metal against metal. This system runs on stainless steel wheels and bronze ball bearings. Each panel of glass has four holes drilled into it so that the profile can be bolted to the glass as well as glued, this is the only system to do this – all other systems are merely glued to the profile. Sunflex Glass Curtains also come with an additional adjustable bar. This means that if there is any movement at all the glass curtains can be adjusted up or down with just an alan key instead of having to take all the panels of glass out and start again.

The Sunflex system has all these improvements and extras. However you will be surprised to find that there is not a great deal of difference in price at all between this system and others that are bottom hung. This system has undergone many tests in Germany including an opening and closing test of over 10,000 cycles and also a wind test of up to 2000 Pascal’s – all the test documentation can be viewed at our offices. Please be aware that there are copy systems of Sunflex appearing on the market, which have undergone no safety tests and could be dangerous.

Please contact Germany to verify who is an official distributor and manufacturer of Sunflex.

We also recommend that anybody looking to install glass curtains or stainless steel, visit the factory and see where they are being manufactured. With this financial climate many companies on the coast have filed for bankruptcy. You may find that these companies are still trying to trade without proper premises and licences and merely change their company names. Do ask questions – a reliable company has nothing to hide.

For more information please email us on info@rdmcsglass.com or check out our website on www.rdmcsglass.com to see installation photos, information about our system and also customer references.

Or see our Facebook page for regularly updated installations. Opening hours Mon – Fri 8.30 – 6.00. Telephone us on 952 477 963 or 677 712 742. Or call in and see us at: Pol Ind El Cañadon Nave 16 & 18, Km2 Camino De Coin Mijas Costa Malaga 29650

Community News Border heats up again The Spanish Ambassador is summoned to the Foreign Office The British Government has issued the follow press release in response to the recent escalation in tension at the Gibraltar Spain crossing point:

FCO Political Director Simon Gass, summoned the Spanish Ambassador to the United Kingdom, H.E. Federico Trillo, in order to underline the British Government’s serious concerns regarding delays at the GibraltarSpain border, and to seek reassurances that there would be no repeat of the additional checks this weekend.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister of State Hugo Swire, pictured above, said: “From 26th to 28th July, and again on 30th July, there were long delays at the Gibraltar-Spain border

of up to seven hours, as a result of wholly disproportionate checks introduced by the Spanish authorities on vehicles both leaving and entering Gibraltar.” “Disruption to border flows has a direct impact on the prosperity and wellbeing of communities on both sides of the border. The UK Government’s position is that these delays are unjustified, unacceptable and have no place at a border between EU partners.” The Spanish Ambassador to the United Kingdom was last summoned to the FCO in November 2012 following two serious incursions into British Gibraltar Territorial Waters. Following comments reported today, the Foreign

and Commonwealth Office has reasserted its ties with Gibraltar.

The Foreign Office has also called for a political answer to the current situation, looking to continue the UK’s strong relationship with Spain. A Foreign Office spokesman said: “The Prime Minister has made clear that the UK government will meet its constitutional commitments to the people of Gibraltar and will not compromise on sovereignty. Our differences with Spain on Gibraltar will be resolved by political means through our relationship as EU partners, not through disproportionate measures such as the border delays we have seen over the past week. We have many common interests with Spain and wish to continue

to have a strong relationship at every level with the Government of Spain. The Cordoba Agreement was an example of our relationship with Spain working effectively, with the Agreement benefiting many in the Campo area of Spain. We are continuing to abide by our obligations under the Agreement and we look to the Government in Spain to do likewise. In the meantime, we will be seeking an explanation from Spain following reports that the Spanish government might target Gibraltar with further measures.”

Unexpected cheque for CHAIN

Worldwide company JS International held a charity golf day recently at the Alhaurin Golf course. People attended from various countries, had lunch and the game commenced. However, at lunch the participants were asked if they would care to donate to local animal charity CHAIN that is based in the La Trocha Centre in

On the subject of fires There has been an awful lot of confusion about whether or not you are allowed to have bonfires, BBQs etc at this time of year.

Obviously, common sense should dictate that it is downright dangerous to have an open fire at this time of year and the absolute devastation to the countryside – to the back of Fuengirola and all the way along to Marbella, going inland as far as Guaro – last year should make everyone realise that this cannot be allowed. Even so, practically every morning, and very often before first light because they think they can (and mostly do) get away with it, you can see small plumes of smoke rising from fires of garden cuttings etc.

We were therefore very pleased to discover that a lady on a new Facebook site “Local Fire and Weather Watch” had taken the trouble to find out what the actual law is on all of this. This is what she says: “I asked them (the Fire Brigade) straight out what the rules are for bonfires (hogueras). I was told categorically that you cannot have one at all, at any time or any day or in any conditions in an area deemed "forestal". Don't be fooled into thinking this is just a forest area! I asked , Ground floor La Trocha C.C. Coin

Key cutting, photocopying, fax, printing, business cards, greeting cards etc., all in one place!

pointing to a big field full of olive trees, in the campo, if that would be classed as forestal and was assured it certainly would be. So you can gather that if you are in an area with a good few trees or an orchard for example this would probably be classed as forestal. This rule applies from the 1st June to 15th October. NO exceptions! (This also applies to BBQ's, coal/charcoal or gas!) In non-forestal areas such as urbanisations etc the rules are very simple. You MUST have a "permiso" for a bonfire from your town hall. This will involve a special section of the Guardia Civil coming to inspect where you intend to have it and if you have safety precautions in place. This involves a hose pipe/s and a cleared piece of land where you intend to have the bonfire, together with a further area of cleared land to stop it getting out of hand. You are NOT entitled to have a bonfire without this permiso. Failure to have a permiso can result in HUGE fines. If you do get a permiso and your bonfire gets out of hand the permiso becomes void and not only do you have to pay a fine for letting it get out of hand but you also have to pay the emergency services costs for having to come and put it out. breezy/windy and you have the bonfire alight, the permiso becomes void and if reported you will get fined. Now on to the reporting! The Fire Brigade were in NO DOUBT that the first people you call is 062 – Guardia Civil and NOT 112. Why? Because 112 is for ALL emergencies and centralised for Andalucia. 062 puts you through to the Guardia Civil and they are responsible for going out to check the bonfire/fire and then activating the relevant services i.e. Bomberos /INFOCA /BRICA etc. They also check for any permisos. The Guardia Civil are the only ones who have the authority to fine people who have illegal bonfires whilst the 112 services cannot issue fines. 112 will attend an emergency via the Guardia Civil but it's the Guardia Civil who have the authority to fine. On the subject of BBQ's I was told certainly NOT in an area forestal until after the 15th October but until then the local by-laws of the village/town/city would apply and you would have to find them out through your local ayuntamiento (Town Hall). They did say though to think very carefully before you had one! Is your area likely to catch fire with any flying embers/sparks etc? If so

then don't do it!! They were basically saying what we had all been saying yesterday – if in doubt, don't!!! I asked if all bonfires should be reported to the Guardia Civil? "Absolutely" was the reply! They said if you see either a fire or a bonfire it was better to be safe than sorry. You can tell the difference between a bonfire and a fire in most cases. Bonfires normally have a column of smoke (can be black, grey or white depending on what is being burnt) however fires tend to have plumes of smoke and you can possibly see flames. Again the colour of the smoke can vary between black to white.

So be in NO DOUBT folks! The bomberos would prefer you to report any bonfire or fire to the Guiardia Civil on 062. They said exactly what we were saying – don't think someone else will do it because they may not!” Written by Jill Leonard organiser of the Facebook Local Fire and Weather Watch Group.

Church supports those in need

St Andrew’s Anglican Chaplaincy has a long history of giving to local charities, but a few years ago the Chaplaincy Council decided that instead of a vague amount at the end of the financial year a specific amount would be budgeted for charitable donations for the year. At a recent meeting of the Chaplaincy Council it was agreed that as many charities were struggling because of the financial crisis the Chaplaincy would make some donations now. And the Council agreed unanimously, on this occasion, to support CUDECA and CARITAS. And so, last week the Chaplain, the Venerable David Sutch, and Mr Jim Marshall presented cheques for 1,250€ to CUDECA (pictured above right CUDECA – L to R Jim Marshall, Natalia Aparicio, Ven. David Sutch) and to the branch of CARITAS (pictured below) in Los Boliches. Ven. David said that some people might wonder

at the wisdom of giving money away when the Chaplaincy, like many people and organisations, is struggling financially. But since Jesus said “it is more blessed to give than to receive” if we show faithfulness in a God who gives us everything we need, then our faith will be rewarded and we will be blessed.” The parishioners are also supporting the work of CARITAS with donations of nonperishable foodstuffs for distribution to the needy of the area. If anyone would like to contribute to this work donations in kind or cash may be brought to St Andrew’s Church any Wednesday morning.

Editor says : Thanks for that Jill. Now there’s no excuse for having a fire when you shouldn’t and putting all of us, our houses and our kids and animals at risk. JUST DON’T DO IT!

QROPS (Qualifying Recognized Overseas Pension Scheme) have been available to ex-pats since April 2006.

There is no mystery to QROPS, they are basically the same as your UK pension but offer better benefits than the UK. The process is very simple and takes approximately three months to complete. In the UK you may not take any benefits before you are 55 years of age. If you are 50 or above and have been outside the UK for 5 complete tax years you may withdraw 25/30% and then an income at 55. If you are pension rich but cash poor, this could be a way of solving temporary financial difficulties. You have nothing to lose by asking but everything to gain. Warbler is rarely seen, preferring to keep out of sight and feeding in deep and dense cover. However, in the breeding season the male bird is more conspicuous, singing from open perches and performing noisy flights of display.

The male bird, shown in both photographs, has dark-grey upper parts and a jet black head with a bright red eye-ring. The under part is light grey and the throat white. The female is not as colourful with a grey-brown upper part, a greyish head and reddish eye ring. Her under parts are buff and the throat is also white. At this time of the year there are lots of juvenile birds about and their plumage is similar to that of the female. seasonal berries and seeds. It seems, the locals at least, are particularly fond of pomegranate seeds. Hang half a cut pomegranate up in your garden and you will most likely receive a visit from a Sardinian Warbler.

A few Sardinian Warblers do fly to Africa for the winter but the majority are resident, remaining in Andalucía. In February a pair will build a nest and during the breeding season the female will lay up to three

clutches of between three to five eggs in the same nest. Incubation takes around two weeks, fledging – when the young bird develops the wing feathers large enough for flight – takes about another two weeks, the chicks become independent two to three weeks later. The parents then chase them from the breeding territory so that they can get on with the next clutch. For more information on field trips and the

pil, prawn cocktail or cheesy garlic bread for €3.95. Deserts are just €2.95 with eight choices including sticky toffee pudding, chocolate fudge cake, lemon meringue pie or ice cream among others. At 9pm the heat of the day has reduced enough to sit outside at one of their tables under the shade of the narrow street’s Jacaranda trees and watch all the people going by in their summer finery or beach clothes, plus the street musicians with their guitars and accordians who come along to entertain you. But Sunday lunch isn’t all Casa Kon-Tiki do. Breakfasts come in all shapes and sizes from Monday to Saturday including bacon, bacon

and egg, sausage or sausage and egg muffins. They do a daily €5 meal deal that includes steak and ale pie, fish and chips and spaghetti bolgnaise. McConaughey can act! I

Any comments?

email: editorial@thenewsonline.es

am so used to seeing Matthew McConaughey on the Top Ten Hollywood lists, cavorting on beaches, working out his pint-sized body and running through the surf whilst attempting to swing his impossibly short, dinosaur type arms, it often slips my mind that his is in fact an actor.

M

y previous conceptions of him being nothing more than a Hollywood ‘fluff’ player completely dissipated when I accidently stumbled upon the 2011 movie “The Lincoln Lawyer” on the box last week.

Directed by Paul Feig Starring: Sandra Bullock, Melisa McCarthy From the director of the hugely successful Bridesmaids, and starring literally one of its biggest stars in the voluptuous shape of McCarthy, The Heat is set to be one of the comedy winners of the year. Uptight FBI special agent Sarah Ashburn (Bullock) teams up with coarse foul-mouthed Boston cop Shannon Mullins (McCarthy) and guess what? For the purposes of the plot the two women loathe each other on sight. Ashburn is a prissy know-it-all and hugely

disliked by everyone at the office while Mullins gives as good as she gets, overwhelms the guys by sheer force of personality and litters the air with profanities.

So no prizes for working out that if this movie is to run its full length the two protagonists must become bosom buddies as they join forces to bring down a ruthless drug baron (is there any other sort?) It’s a formulaic plot seen dozens of times starring guys and the dialogue is crude and blowsy. But this is McCarthy at her

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. cConaughey plays Mick Haller, a defence lawyer who has been hired to represent an arrogant, over-privileged young man Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillipe) accused of battering a prostitute. It doesn’t take long for Heller and his researcher Frank Levine (William H. Macy) to realise that there is something “not quite right” about this case. Very soon, Roulet, confident in the ‘lawyerclient’ confidentiality clause, cockily not only admits his guilt to Haller but also confesses to a previous crime for which Heller’s client, Jesus Martinez, was sentenced to life.

H

ere Heller becomes an American anomaly – a defence lawyer with a conscience – knowing the truth, and yet having to accept his legal limitations. The film is an intelligent, well paced thriller that holds your attention throughout. The movie rests squarely on Matthew McConaughey’s shoulders as he appears in almost every scene and he carries it off admirably. His relationship with the mother of his daughter, exwife (Marisa Tomei) who works in the DA’s office gives us a personal insight into Haller’s life without stooping to sentimentality and also adds to the later tensions of the plot.

W

illiam H. Macy’s role is, as they say, a small but significant one, and we feel for his unfortunate

fate, as we do for him in the majority of his roles. The character of Louis Roulet is one that makes you want to take him by the collar and smack him upside his head, or perhaps it’s just Ryan Phillipe that we want to do that to!

I

f you enjoy a good courtroom drama, whose ending is not a foregone conclusion, then “The Lincoln Lawyer” is definitely worth a watch, and while we are on the subject, there are a couple of others that deserve a mention, if you missed them first time around.

My Cousin Vinny” is a more light hearted courtroom drama, but the dialogue is quick and punchy with a brilliant performance by Joe Pesci as the unconventional lawyer. This film also starred Marisa Tomei who won an academy award in 1993.

A

much more serious and sinister courtroom film is the 1996 “Primal Fear” starring Richard Gere. This is the film in which Edward Norton made his debut with his role of the accused, a dual personality character Aaron Stampler / Roy. This astonishingly good movie has shocking twists and turns right to the very end and is not easily forgotten.

A

nd of course, my final recommendation is the classic “A Few Good Men”. I have seen this film countless times but whenever I catch it on the TV I cannot turn over the channel! Tom Cruise, although not my favourite actor plays a blinder as the lawyer and who can resist watching Jack Nicholson’s famous “You can’t handle the truth!” speech again and again and again.

There are financial opportunities all around you, just make sure you get all agreements in writing, however on your side it is all about bringing that deal home through proper planning and making those ideas a reality. Make sure you keep your ears open and really listen to what others are asking for, instead of jumping in and giving a lecture on something that does not apply. Socially you are as popular as ever and will be a magnetic beacon on an evening out. Others are drawn towards you lately as they sense the confidence and convictions within you. The more you slow down and plan your moves, the better the outcome will be. Your biggest challenge is remaining focused as lady luck is with you and you need to accomplish as much as possible this week. Financial elements are looking up, especially by the weekend. Every decision you make now will dramatically alter the road ahead. All kinds of breakthroughs can be made at this time, the kind that could transform your life entirely. The thing is, it is all about being in the game to win, therefore, you cannot allow anything to get in the way of your turning away from faith or self confidence. You may have to deal with struggles or obstacles but this is a time loaded with potential and promise. So stick in there and do not be tempted to turn away at the last hurdle. Whatever was bringing you down could turn itself around just like that, there are better days ahead. It is like you have not been able to depend upon anyone outside of yourself for what you need. Every time you reached out, their hand was withdrawn. A change of heart will lead to things just falling into place and working out in your favour. Many personal opportunities will appear.Open up to others and let nature take its course. Not letting that fear of the unknown hold you back is the key. There is a personal transformation occurring, one that allows you to relax and enjoy life without worrying too much about the future. Others may feel threatened by your general ease with life and see you growing in power and subtle influence. Maintain your standards and make sure whatever task you do is done with as much precision as possible.

WEDNESDAY, August 7th 2013

If there ever was a time to get a bigger vision and a better hold on your life and on your path it would be now. You continue to gain in personal strength and power and at the same time there is a growing sense of hidden awareness that can almost over-power your senses at times. Relationships are being redefined and new close contacts are being formed. There is the possibility of some travel occurring shortly.

Keep things simple and life will seem to flow with a lot more ease. Over complication can lead to confusion so when things seem hectic bring it back to the basics. You always do so much for others and most of the time others are not aware because you make it all look so easy. However, this is your time to call in favours and reap the rewards of your efforts, if you put in the hard work there can be material rewards. You are injected full of positive productivity, so keep the bigger picture in mind versus the daily events that consume so much of your time. There is a lot of work that needs to be done at this time, it is the things you take care of now that allow you the time to kick back and relax later on. Early next week is great for any social or romantic activities, attention will be coming your way, as your personality shines bright. You may be worrying a lot right now - but nothing is usually as bad at it seems. There are plenty of times when you may have feared the worst and somehow, the tides turn and you get a break. Someone you least expect is going to come through for you, others are seeing the same spark and looking at you for direction and leadership and will support you in your ideals. Pay attention to your diet and make sure you eating well, stress can take its toll. You have a radar that is fierce and a lens that is clear this week and this gives you an intuition that knows the way. Trust in who you are and all that you bring to the table, it is indispensible. Past experiences seem to come together and become of huge benefit to you, allowing you a fresh start from a stronger and wiser position. Others may need you to be around and you may need to lend a listening ear.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

With the abundance of tomatoes in the shops, or even if you grow your own, there is a way of slow roasting them, and then storing them for several months, and it really is worth making a batch or two to see you through the winter.

Tomato Confit Ingredients:

(Makes enough to fill 3x300ml / ½ pint jam jars)

• 1kg plum tomatoes • 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced • good handful fresh thyme, basil & oregano • 100ml/3½fl oz olive oil • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar • 1 tbsp icing sugar Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 100C/gas ¼. Halve the tomatoes and place in a roasting tin with all the other ingredients. Mix everything together with your hands, then arrange the tomatoes in rows, cut-sides up. Roast for 2-2½ hrs, turning them over after 1 hr. Can be cooled and kept in the fridge for up to a week. 2. Tightly pack the confit tomatoes and tray juices into 300ml jars to within 1cm of the tops. The jars should have been sterlised first (see below). If you are using screw on lids boil them first for 10 mins. 3. Place in a large, heavy-based saucepan with a heatproof plate covering the base. Pour in enough water to cover the jars, then bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for 45

mins. Turn off the heat and leave to cool in the water. 4. Wipe the jars and store in a cool place for up to 6 months. After opening, use within a week. STERILISING YOUR JARS Wash jars and lids in soapy water. Rinse but don´t dry - just put in the oven for five minutes at 180ºC/160ºC fan/gas 4 and fill while still warm. USING YOUR TOMATO CONFIT • Serve with goats’ cheese on your cheeseboard. • Use as a bruschetta topping. • Stir through pasta dishes. • Add to an antipasta platter.

Tech Samsung Galaxy Note 3 News launch imminent Phablet fans, hold on to your styluses: the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is coming. Rumours about the next entry in Samsung’s hit series of giant Android phones with mega battery life have been whirling around for months, but now a new report has pegged it with a release date just a month away! South Korean news site Asia Economic reports that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be unveiled on 4th September, two days before the big IFA gadget expo – where the Galaxy Note 2 was revealed last year – kicks off in Berlin, so it is expected that the huge slate that makes calls will be the star of the show. The report says we can expect Samsung’s much rumoured smartwatch to arrive on the same day as the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – given the latter’s likely enormous screen (the Galaxy Note 2 display measured a huge 5.5 inches across)

Samsung are believed to have been testing three different screen sizes for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 follow-on. Recent reports have suggested that a 5.7-inch display with a 1920 x 1080 pixel Full HD display has been selected over 5.5-inch and 6-inch options. Following the software’s recent launch, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean is believed to be at the heart of the Note 3. While the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has been the subject of many leaks, the Samsung Smartwatch is shrouded in a little more controversy. Believed to be the first device in a new ‘Gear’ branded range of wearable products, Samsung confirmed earlier this year that it was working on its own smartwatch product in a

bid

to fend off the expected Apple iWatch. “We've been preparing the watch product for so long," Samsung's executive VP Lee Young Hee said in an interview earlier this year. He added: "We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them."we could see them making helpful bedfellows: phablet for on the sofa, wrist display for alerts when you’re on the go. Samsung’s sold millions of Galaxy Note phones in the last two years, but it’s now facing tough competition in the new “phablet” category, with the likes of Sony, Huawei and Asus all putting out their own takes on the plus-sized smartphone.

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Calvin,

I am about to hit 55 and have always had long hair and now feel it is time to cut it short (on the advice of many of my friends who all have short hair!). How do I decide what style will suit me? Kathy, Fuengirola Dear Kathy,

Just because all of your friends have short hair it doesn't mean you have to follow suit. Gone are the days where we had to dress or wear our hair in a certain way at a certain age. However, if you decide a new style is for you, here are a few tips to help you. 1. The shape of your

3. Choose a style that is away from your face as this gives us the illusion of lifting the face.

I have seen you recommend "Paul Mitchell Forever Blonde". I have blonde hair that is coloured but after a few days it has faded. I’ve seen adverts on tv for a shampoo with violet in it. Does this work? Where can I buy it in Spain?

Whenever I have a manicure to paint my nails they start to look shabby after a couple of days. I have been recommended by a friend to have "shellac" put on them to keep them looking good for a few days longer, but somebody else told me these are false nails. I don't want to ruin my nails. What should I do?

2. Look at your lifestyle. How much time have you spare to do your hair? Are you prepared to blow dry each time, or do you want something you can wash and leave?

4. Leave softness in the neck, going to short can be quite harsh.

5. If you want to call me on the number below and come in to see me at "Calvin's Hair Studio" I am very happy to do a free consultation and advise you on what would be best for you as it is much

Dear Calvin,

Lillian, Bexleyheath and Rio Frio Dear Lillian,

Blonde hair fading (and yellowing) is a constant problem here in Spain. "Paul Mitchell" has a violet shampoo. Violet neutralizes the yellow in the hair as it is at the opposite end of the colour spectrum. They also have a "Forever Blonde" shampoo and conditioner which helps keep your blonde vibrant and helps stop fading. Another good tip is to remember to keep your hair covered from the sun whenever possible. I stock the "Paul Mitchell" range so please

Dear Sue,

Wynn, Rio Grande Dear Wynn,

Yes your friend who says "shellac" is a false nail is quite correct. It is a form of gel nail that has to be cured under a uv light. The process itself is not too harsh on the nail. It is, as always with false nails, the removal that proves the problem for the natural nail. I don't provide this service in the salon for that reason, however CND/Creative that make shellac introduced a range

in May 2013 in Spain called "Vinylux-the weekly manicure". They have introduced 62 colours for this as opposed to 42 for shellac and so far all of my clients are very happy with the durability of this range. As it lasts so long it is important to sterilise the nail prior to application and always use a good conditioning nail oil to prevent the nail drying out. Dear Sue,

I see on sun products an SPF factor, what does this mean? And why do they vary so much from factor 2 to 50? Sarah, Mijas Costa Dear Sarah,

I fully understand how confusing all these numbers are. Firstly, in the same way as UK and Europe have different shoe and clothes sizes, Europe and USA have different numbers with SPF. This is why many sun creams have two numbers on

them. The USA has a lower number than Europe. SPF stands for "sun protection factor" so a European SPF 20 means you can stay in the sun 20 times longer than it would take for you to burn and get sun damage than without. This doesn't affect the skin's ability to tan. In my opinion the best sun protectors contain titanium dioxide which literally forms a barrier against the sun’s rays.

The range of numbers is an indication of how long you may stay in the sun, but anyone who knows me will tell you that British skins are not designed for these hot temperatures so use the highest protection you can. Many of the good ranges contain day creams in their SPF creams which save time and will help to prevent skin cancer. I would like to thank Caroline for phoning me with a question this week regarding skin peeling. This is something that I hope to cover later next month as it isn't something we can cover in the summer.

Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip

Everybody was wondering who the new Who was going to be with lots of speculation but

Peter Capaldi should make a great new Dr. … and remarks on social sites are about equal for whether or not he’s a good choice. Fish fingers and custard may not sound like a good choice for dinner but the outgoing Dr. Who, Matt Smith, seemed to like it well enough. Announced on BBC TV, a first in itself, was the actor who will play the twelfth – and possibly last as they say they will not be having a number 13 – version of one of the world’s most famous doctors.

Glaswegian Peter Capaldi, at age 55 is one of the oldest to play Dr. Who – the same age as the first Dr. Who William Hartnell was in 1963 – following Matt who was the youngest doctor of all. I can distinctly remember loving

the show when it first started. My younger brother hated it, always ending up hiding behind the sofa being terrified of whatever ghastly enemy he was coming up against at the time but, turn it off.... not a chance!

Capaldi is expected to make the rôle his own in fairly short shrift. The man is the only Doctor so far to have an Oscar under his belt and has been an accomplished actor for years. One of his latest parts was as the foul-mouthed spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker in the BBC series The Thick of It. However, it is not the first time Capaldi has appeared on the show – he played Roman merchant Caecilius in 2008

However bad her remarks get, the look on Hollie Willoughby’s face at her last outburst was an absolute picture! What will she come out with next? It’s anybody’s guess but it will no doubt be as ill-informed and outrageous as the rest of them.

Opinion Malaga

Brian J Deller Is Spain institutionally corrupt? It is very difficult with all the evidence in recent years not to agree that Spain and its peoples especially those who gain some political power, are prone to automatically cheat all others where they think they can get away with it. We all know about the developers bribing willing local councillors to issue licences for building on restricted or legally banned lands, but what about all the Spanish lawyers who willingly processed the sales, both for the sellers and the buyers? I have asked several lawyers if when they graduated for the Collegio de Abogados (lawyers school) if they

swore an oath to obey the laws without fear or favour? All replied “Of course. We had to.” So why have none been sanctioned for processing the illegal sales transactions? They cannot use the excuse that the seller had a licence because it is the lawyers’ professional duty to check that the sale is legal Did some say that the sale may be illegal despite the licence being granted and there will most likely be a small fine to pay and the cost of this fine is built into the selling price so do not worry?” It would appear that some did, so they are really corrupt crooks in most people’s minds and should also be liable for paying reparations to

David Petie We all seem to have the wrong impression of the Winter Fuel Allowance (WFA). This is NOT an automatic right for us pensioners. Initially it was a “gift” by the incumbent government of the time that decided it would provide a sum of money to help pensioners with their heating bills – within the UK. It was not designed for all British people who lived in other countries throughout the world. It had absolutely nothing to do with whether one had paid income tax,

buyers where a house has subsequently been pulled down. I have had my “ISSUE” with a Spanish lawyer (it is still ongoing after 4 years) where I was given bad advice and lack of service. I believe that lawyers now should only be paid when the action is fully completed. After all they always demand payment up front. Thought for the week. When I was young, a woman would reach into her handbag, take out a compact and proceed to pat her face. Today they reach in and take out a device (smartphone) which they then proceed to stab with their fingers. How times have changed.

national insurance tax or any other tax. We have all paid these taxes but this has nothing to do with being eligible for receiving the WFA. It may well be cold at times in Spain, although it most certainly does not get anywhere near as cold as in the UK, but, for whatever reason, I did decide to leave the UK and live in this country. The fact that I have served in the forces, am short of money and am having some difficulties living here, is totally beside the point. I do not have an

automatic right to receive this WFA. I am most definitely entitled to my pension as I have paid into this over many years, but, as I have just said, this does not entitle me to the gift of the WFA. Now I am living in Spain, I see no reason why I should expect the UK government to support me financially, other than for what I am entitled to. Maybe the Spanish would like to receive a WFA? But why should they, they are used to the Spanish weather !

Roger Childs Over the last few weeks Coin seems have been subjected to an unacceptable level of motor cycle noise at all times of the day and night by young men roaring through town on their inadequately silenced motor bikes and scooters. Not only is this situation creating an unbearable racket but it is highly dangerous, and someone will get killed if the local police continue to ignore the practice. At times the town appears to be little more than a racetrack for a small minority of selfish motorcyclists with

Coin

virtually no chance of them being apprehended by the authorities. While not wanting to appear a "killjoy" I do feel that one should be entitled to sit at a pavement café or lie in bed without this constant ear splitting noise breaking the peace and tranquillity which I believe we are all entitled to enjoy. I sincerely hope that this situation is dealt with urgently before the summer is over.

Editor says: It must be one of the most annoying noises on the planet and, as you say, little is done about it here.

Catch a Falling Star!

A

If you’ve never seen a shooting star then this weekend will be your perfect opportunity.

shooting star, falling star or meteor is caused when a piece of space rock that is happily hanging around in space happens to strike the Earth’s upper atmosphere. Then, because it can be travelling at up to 20,000mph, the friction of the air causes the rock to burn up causing a brief streak of light across the sky, lasting only a second or two.

M

ost meteors are tiny, around the size of a grain of sand. But if the space rock is bigger, perhaps the size of a house brick, then it can create a spectacularly bright fireball as it burns up. If the meteor is big enough to survive the journey through the atmosphere and eventually land on the ground then it is known as a meteorite.

Y

ou may remember in February this year when a spectacular fireball was seen zooming across the skies of Russia. This meteor was estimated to be around 20 metres in diameter, weighing more than the Eiffel tower and travelling at over 41,000 mph! The resulting blast wave as it exploded 14 miles up in the sky caused widespread damage and injured around 1500 people.

M

ost meteors, however, are quite harmless, and if you spend long enough outside on any given night then you are almost guaranteed to see at least one meteor. But at certain times of the year the Earth passes through the debris left over from a comet tail. The collective grouping of the tiny particles can cause a meteor shower and in some cases even a meteor storm.

E

very year around mid August the Earth passes through the debris left behind by a comet called Swift-Tuttle. Swift-Tuttle orbits the Sun once every 133 years. The last time it was in our area was back in 1992; it is not due to return again until 2126. But each time that the comet has visited the inner solar system its path was almost identical and the debris from its tail lies right across the Earth’s orbit. So as we pass through the litter of tiny particles and sweep them up they create the Perseid meteor shower.

A

t their peak the Perseids can number 200 meteors an hour shooting across the sky. In past years when we have struck a

particularly dense area the number has gone up to hundreds of meteors per minute causing a meteor storm. In 1972 some parts of the world reported seeing meteors ‘falling like hailstones’ from the sky.

T

he Perseids have been observed for over 2000 years and in some countries they are referred to as ‘The Tears of Saint Lawrence’. August 10th is the day of St. Lawrence who was put to death by the Romans. It is said that he was slowly burned to death over hot coals, and after suffering for some time he is reputed to have cried out ‘I’m done this side, please turn me over’!

P

atience is the key word with meteor spotting, it’s no use just sticking your head out of the window during the adverts on TV. You really need around 15–20 minutes outside in the dark to allow your eyes to become dark adapted as most of the meteors are very faint indeed.

Y

ou don’t need any special equipment to see the Perseids, simply find a very dark, safe area far away from street lights then with either a deck chair or sun lounger (and a glass of wine) lie back, look up and enjoy the show. The meteors will create very fine almost gossamer like trials almost anywhere in the sky but if you follow an imaginary line backwards you will find that they all seem to originate from the constellation of Perseus, hence the name Perseid. I have always favoured looking about half way up the sky toward the Northeast.

T

he nights of 11th to 13th of August are predicted to be the best times with around midnight on Monday 12th being the maximum. Because the Moon will be in an early crescent phase this year then it will set quite early in the evening and not block out any of the fainter meteors.

A H

nd if you do spot a shooting star be sure to make a wish as they always come true! appy Stargazing.

Kenny Sansom receiving help

Crutchlow opts for Ducati Cal Crutchlow has signed a two-year deal to ride for Ducati from next year. The deal gives Crutchlow, who has had four podium finishes for Yamaha's satellite team Tech 3 this year, a MotoGP factory ride for the first time.

Crutchlow joins Ducati, replacing 2006 world champion Nicky Hayden and re-forming his partnership with former Tech 3 team-mate Andrea Dovizioso. There are only three full factory teams in MotoGP – at Ducati, Yamaha and Repsol Honda – and each has two riders. Both Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi have contracts with Yamaha that run until 2015, while Repsol Honda have Spaniards Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa signed up. Riders signed to factory teams benefit from updates and higher spec machinery before their rivals in other outfits, who lease their bikes from the factories. Back in May, Crutchlow revealed that Yamaha were in talks with Moto2 rider Espargaro for a Tech 3 ride in 2014, expressing frustration at not being offered the same package, and with Bradley Smith under contract with the satellite team for 2014, it looked as though Crutchlow would be left without a ride in 2014. Yamaha, though, were keen for the Isle of Man star, who has finished as the top satellite rider in all but two races this year, to stay with the Tech 3 team. It is well documented that Ducati have struggled in recent seasons and have not won a race since Casey Stoner took victory at the Australian Grand Prix in 2010. Seven-time MotoGP champion Rossi had a two-year spell with Ducati but managed only three podiums, eventually rejoining Yamaha this year. The Audi takeover of Ducati has prompted big changes in the managerial side of the MotoGP project, but they still remain without a single podium in 2013. Ducati Corse general manager Bernhard Gobmeier said they have a two-year project to get Ducati back to a competitive level.

Steve Parrish, MotoGP BBC commentator believes that Crutchlow has made the right decision saying “I don't think Yamaha saw his potential. They didn't do a very good

Crutchlow with soon-to-be-teammate-again Dovizioso job of trying to keep him. He has probably spoken to lots of people who courted him in much better fashion. Tech 3 negotiated with Spanish Moto2 rider Pol Espargaro, who will replace Cal next year, at a point when they should have been talking to Cal – I think that upset him”.

“Cal is not daft and knows Ducati hasn't been the easiest bike to ride. People will think that if Valentino Rossi, who only

shouldn't forget, too, that Casey Stoner won a lot of races on it including a championship in 2007 – so it's not impossible to ride.”

Kenny Sansom was on Thursday night in the care of the Professional Footballers’ Association after revelations that he was homeless, penniless and losing the fight against his addictions to gambling and alcohol. “We’ve been looking after Kenny not for two weeks or two months but for several years regarding his rehab,” said PFA deputy chief executive Bobby Barnes. “He has been constantly in a programme where he is counselled and looked after by our psychologists from the Sporting Chance clinic

on an out-patient basis. We have been paying for his accommodation for quite a time and one thing Kenny knows is we will never turn our backs on him.” Arsenal say they are also giving support and guidance to their former England fullback "We are aware of Kenny Sansom's situation and have been providing him with ongoing support and guidance," said an Arsenal spokesperson. Sansom spent eight years with Arsenal, playing in 314 matches. Sansom said: "I am in a bad way. Arsenal are trying to help me, but I have got to try to help myself." The 54year-old, who is the second most capped England fullback in history behind Ashley Cole, is reported to

have been living on the streets and spending his time drinking and gambling. He made his professional football debut for Crystal Palace when he was 16 before moving to Arsenal, where he won the League Cup in 1987. Sansom left the club in 1988, after falling out of favour, for Newcastle. He also had stints at Queens Park Rangers, Coventry, Everton, Brentford and Watford before retiring in 1995. Time and again we hear of footballers who are hooked on gambling and drink, and the outcome is usually not good. One of England’s best defenders has his biggest challenge ahead ... good luck Kenny!

N.E.B.S. feel the heat at America’s Stacey Lewis Atalaya Golf Club wins British Open Some fifteen players made the journey to Atalaya Golf Club and the first tee time was at 11.30, so we knew we would catch high temperatures. Buggies were allowed on the fairways, which made the round easier and more pleasant.

Nearest the pin on hole 2 Terry Birtles, hole 7 Andy Macfarlane, hole 12 not claimed and hole 16 Charles Randall. Nearest the pin in two shots on hole 13 not claimed. Longest drive on hole 11 Andy Macfarlane. The par 3 competition was shared by Terry Birtles and Heikki Kontinnen both with ten points.

Winning team prize with 30.3 average score was, Heikki Kontinnen, Ian Brewer and Dave Wrigglesworth. The winner of the day’s

main competition was Heikki Kontinnen with 34 points. Second place with 33 points was Dave Haworth, and in third place with 32 points was Charles Randall. In last place and the winner of the plunger with 15 points was Brian Millwood. To be fair to Brian the last position could have been given to me as I retired after seven holes due to the heat and I was playing like a wally!

The members would like to thank Terry Birtles for arranging the event. Also thanks to Tina at The Olive Tree in Coin, our 19th hole, for the food. Lastly it was nice to see two old members who now live in the UK, Ian Brewer and Dave Williams playing with us again, and, Dave looking so well following his treatments. Nig Bowler

American Stacy Lewis won the British Open by two shots on eight under from Koreans Hee Young Park and Na Yeon Choi after five birdies in the final round. Lewis birdied the 17th Road Hole with the shot of the day, and then birdied the 18th to finish with an even-par 72 and win her second major on the LGPA Tour, having also won the 2011 Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Strong winds had caused play to be suspended at 12:30 BST on Saturday, meaning both the third and final rounds were played at St Andrews on Sunday.

Korean Choi let slip a three-shot lead with six

holes to play. A bogey on the 17th ended her chances and a record streak of 10 straight majors won by Asian players.

Another Korean, Inbee Park, failed in her attempt to become the first player, male or female, to win four professional majors in the same year. The 25-yearold, who won the Kraft

Female jockey dies Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips in a fatal fall at Darwin Cup The best thing any poker player can see is hitting a monster or the stone cold nuts on the flop. We then have to think how do I get the other player(s) to pay me off. Did we raise pre flop with a premium hand or did we raise light in late position, set mining or limping with connectors? These factors will come into play here. If you raised with a premium hand it will not be hard for them to put you on a big hand. If you have raised with junk and hit big, bet every street. If you get action as it would be difficult for them to put you on the hand as you raised pre and, of course, if you had missed you can now represent the A.

Let’s say we are in early position with AQ so we raise 3X the BB. We get a late position call and the BB comes along for the ride as he has value to call. The flop comes AQQ, we need to appear weak to keep at least one of the players in the pot. Should we could check or bet?

This is when taking notes on the other player comes into it's own. Are they tight, loose or better still over aggressive? With the latter I would check, hoping he bets. With the tight and loose player I would bet around 1/3 pot. Should the tight player have anything, he will call and raise with a Q giving us the action we

want but if he has missed he won't put a cent into the pot. The loose player will call as a dangerous board does not worry them, he is hoping he can bluff the river with an over-sized bet which is a sure sign of a weak hand with this board. With the loose player I would bet the flop and turn and check the river giving him a chance to bluff – then we can come over the top with a pot size bet. Bluffing is part of poker and if you’re going to bluff make sure the story adds up, unlike TV poker which is edited clips of just the action hands because folding round to the BB is not good TV.

Simple rules to follow when bluffing – do not try and represent the A if you have not raised pre flop, if you’re going to represent a flush make sure you have bet the flush draw. You need to make your bet big enough to make them fold. Too small they have value to call, too large it makes them smell a rat because why would you bet so big if you had the nuts? I often see players shoving all in on the flop with a bluff. Why risk your stack? You’re only going to get called by a hand that beats you. Betting the pot is fine because if he does not believe you on a pot size bet there is less chance he will with a shove..... because a shove does not make sense if you have the nuts!

The Darwin Cup race meeting in Australia has been abandoned after jockey Simone Montgomerie died in fall. The 26-year-old Montgomerie, a mother of two, was thrown from her Gary Clarke trained horse Riahgrand 100 metres from the finish line in the sixth race of the meeting.

She was treated on the course before being taken to hospital, where she fell into a coma and died around an hour after the fall. There were three races left, which were cancelled as soon as the gravity of Montgomerie's condition became apparent. "As far as we are concerned, Simone was our family and we are all devastated by this accident," said Darwin

`Yankees´ Alex Rodriguez in baseball doping ban

Turf Club chairman Brett Dixon.

The rider's father, Peter Montgomerie, trained 2005 Melbourne Cup runner-up On A Jeune.

"Simone was a champion jockey at the top of her game and a pioneer of women in racing who will be sorely missed," said Adam Giles, chief minister of Northern Territory.

England retain e Ashes

England retained The Ashes by drawing the third Test as rain put an end to Australia's push for final day victory.

Australia were in a commanding position, having removed Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen to reduce England to 37-3 in pursuit of an unlikely target of 332. But recurring showers prevented any resumption of a compelling contest after

England need to draw only one of the remaining two Tests to win the series and underline their recent domination of one of sport's oldest contests. Australia, who won eight consecutive Ashes series between 1989 and 2002-03, will be hoping to

salvage a draw from the series before the return contest down under, starting in November.

Pietersen’s dismissal reopened the can of worms that is the Decision Review System after he was given out on eight after edging, or

perhaps not, Peter Siddle behind. DRS has been a disaster during this series and there have been problems with it almost on a daily basis.

Central to the problem is HotSpot – the infra-red, heat-seeking technology which is meant to detect edges. It has been plain to see neither the players nor umpires trust it and Pietersen’s dismissal has almost certainly signed its death warrant.

The 33-year-old, who scored a first-innings century here, reviewed the call made by on-field umpire Tony Hill and despite HotSpot showing no contact between bat and ball, third umpire Kumar Dharmasena did not overturn the decision. Snicko later showed a faint edge and the sooner a real-time version of the sound-based system is rolled out the better. Hopes are it will be available for the return series this winter.

was going to be really hard for someone to shoot 62 or 63,” Woods said. “If I didn’t give any shots away and played my game and shot even par or better, I’d force these guys to go and shoot something super low on a golf course that wasn’t going to give it up under these conditions.”

Woods’ mastery at Firestone Country Club allowed him to again match Sam Snead’s PGA Tour record for victories in an event. Snead won the Greater Greensboro Open eight times. Earlier this year, Woods won at Bay Hill for the eighth time. The Bridgestone was the NEC Invitational before 2006.

Woods earned $1.5 million for his 79th Tour victory. He has won 14 major titles, second only to Jack Nicklaus’ 18. It was the fifth victory of the year for Woods, who has won at least five PGA Tour events in a season a record 10 times.

Former world number one Laura Davies will not feature in Europe's Solheim Cup team for the first time after missing out on a wildcard pick. The 49-year-old is the highest points scorer in the event's history, after playing in all 12 previous events. England's Charley Hull, 17, was picked for the match against America at Colorado Golf Club from 16th-18th August. Hull, who finished second in her first five tournaments this year, was joined as a wildcard pick by England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff, Sweden's Caroline Hedwall and Italy's Giulia Sergas, as Europe look for their first ever victory on American soil
