Train driver admits that he was 'careless'

The driver of the train that derailed killing 79 people said he was "careless" when he drove at speed around a bend as he approached Santiago de Compostela last Wednesday night just before 9 pm, according to newspaper reports. Francisco José Garzon Amo, 52, arrived at court in handcuffs on Sunday, his head scarred by an injury he suffered in the crash. He was questioned behind closed doors for almost two hours by Judge Luis Alaez. Later, a court statement said he had been released pending further investigations but must appear before a court once a week and is not allowed to leave Spain

without permission.

His passport has been surrendered to the judge and his licence to drive a train has been suspended. Under Spanish law, his legal status is that he is suspected of being involved in 79 counts of reckless homicide but has not been formally charged. But officials said he had admitted negligence by being careless when rounding a bend too fast. Newspaper reports said

Garzon told the judge he had been "distracted" and had thought he was on another route. He did not see the bend, he is reported to have said, until he was on it. He also claimed he "could not brake". The train's black box was delivered to the investigating judge on Tuesday but no details had been released by press time. Railway workers have since hinted that the safety devices along that stretch were not up to standard.

Reports have suggested the train was going at 190km/h as Garzon took the bend, where the speed limit is just 80km/h, and he should have begun reducing speed at least three kilometres ahead of the bend. All eight carriages of the train careered off the tracks into a concrete wall as they sped around the curve on the express route between Madrid and the port city of Ferrol on the Galician coast. Another busy weekend has come and gone. On Friday evening around 25 of us descended on the Mumtaz Mahal restaurant in Coin as a pre-celebration to a party on Saturday night. Some of the people there had attended the JS International golf afternoon earlier and the company donated €350 to CHAIN animal charity so a great big “THANK YOU” goes to them. We were all very late getting home so, on Saturday when I woke feeling a little jaded I thought the best thing to do was to get myself up to the new Salsa classes at the Wellington Centre. Now, as a lot of you realise, me and chokkie bikkies and cake go very well together. Me and exercise is a whole different ball game and I am really, really bad at doing it. I hate to think of the number of times I’ve joined a gym, gone twice and never again but, dancing, I love it! Beef, who owns the Wellington Centre, is a fantastic teacher and from not knowing anything at all about Salsa I have managed to learn the basic steps plus

Saturday evening was a big party at our neighbour’s that was good and Sunday evening we were down on the coast sampling a very good Carvery dinner at Casa Kon Tiki.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia visited the crash site on Thursday and then went on to visit the victims in hospital. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who is from Santiago de Compostela, arrived later the same day, accompanied by several ministers.

Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia arrived on Friday and spent time talking to the victims' relatives. The royal family, the PM and his ministers all praised the actions of the local residents, who were the first at the scene of the crash and began breaking windows to extract the dead and the injured from the carriages. Spain's AVE network of 3,100 kilometres is second only to China’s, a country with a population of 1.3 billion people, 27 times more than Spain’s, and with a surface area 20 times bigger. In terms of kilometres of high-speed track per inhabitant, no country in the world comes close to Spain. The love affair with high-speed trains began in 1992, when the line between Madrid and Seville was opened, marking a year commemorating the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas, Barcelona hosting the Olympics, the Expo in Seville, and Madrid as European Capital of

Culture. Since then, the high-speed train industry has grown, and is now worth around €5 billion a year, exporting 60 percent of output. Last year, despite the depression, Spain’s railway industry recorded the second-highest growth in output in the country. The AVE is now one of the country’s best-known products, an ambassador for Brand Spain. Government and the private sector have worked together to create this Made in Spain product, with an eye on high-speed projects in Brazil, the United States, Turkey and Kazakhstan. But last week’s accident in Galicia could damage the country’s chances of claiming a share

of the global market, even though neither the line nor the train itself were high speed. The danger is that the longer the investigation takes, the more risk there is that Spain will lose international contracts. The route between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro is worth €12 billion and could be at risk if, as a result of the investigation, it appears that Spain’s high-speed rail network is not safe. These concerns have prompted Galicia's regional premier, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, to hint that “economic interests” in other countries will criticise the safety of Spain’s network to favour their own bids for highspeed rail lines.

Ex-PP treasurer to Balearics chief jailed for corruption stay in jail The High Court has rejected an appeal by former Partido Popular treasurer, Luis Bárcenas, against a judicial order of preventive custody because it considers he presents a “serious” flight risk. The court also took into account the possibility that Bárcenas may attempt to destroy evidence as well as the “lack of transparency that has governed his conduct”. The judges ruled that Bárcenas, who is one of the suspects in the Gürtel kickbacks-for-contracts network that also involves alleged illegal financing for the PP, should remain in custody because of his “large pool of funds” in Swiss bank accounts and other tax havens. The court said the extent of Bárcenas’ dealings are being brought to light “slowly and inexorably” through

mounting evidence, leading to an “increase in the scope of his possible penal and civil responsibilities, which increases the risk of flight”. The court also rejected a proposal to electronically tag Bárcenas, arguing that the measure would have “little practical effect,” because while it would make it easy to keep track of him, it would not necessarily prevent the destruction of evidence. According to the ABC newspaper, there are discrepancies in the information on the pendrive with the digital version of Bárcenas' handwritten ledgers, which he handed over to Judge Pablo Ruz two weeks ago, and the ledgers themselves. It appears there are at least two different versions of the ledgers, the paper said. The information on the

Luis Bárcenas

pendrive for the years 1993 and 2008 does not agree with the first version leaked by El Pais newspaper in January. The paper said the hypothesis that Bárcenas stole from the PP is gaining strength.

The ABC, which claims to have had access to the transcript of Bárcenas' statement to the judge, said the former treasurer could not seem to remember details of the amounts of money of the "bonuses" he claims to have handed to PP officials in envelopes or the names of those who received them.

María Antonia Munar, who has dominated the political scene in the Balearic Islands for three decades, was sent to prison last week after prosecutors argued that she was a flight risk and could have money stashed away overseas.

The leader of the nowdefunct Unió Mallorquina (UM) group has been found guilty on two charges of corruption and sentenced to a total of eleven and a half years. Munar, a former president

of the Balearics regional parliament, was convicted a year ago for falsifying documents to obtain some €240,000 through a scheme in which a television and radio production company obtained contracts from the Balearic government. She was given a fiveand-a-half-year jail sentence. She was back in court again last week on charges related to the sale of public land worth €60 million at half price, and another land venture that

benefited her nephew – a case that has not yet gone to trial. She was sentenced to six years in jail.

She had asked to remain at liberty until she gets the result of her appeals to the Supreme Court but the Balearic High Court rejected her arguments that she would not flee because she was undergoing treatment for cancer and agreed with the prosecutors, who told the panel of judges she was a flight risk.

Jobless rate falls for first time in two years

The number of unemployed has fallen for the first time in two years, according to figures released by the National Statistics Institute, to just below six million.

The rate stood at 26.3% in the second quarter of the year, down from a record 27.2% in the first quarter. It described the fall in unemployment as "the biggest since 2008", but the unemployment rate of 26.3% comes only second to Greece as the highest in the EU. Youth unemployment also

remains extremely, high, with more than 56% of 1524 year olds out of work. A strong tourist season was credited with boosting employment. Tourism accounts for about 10% of Spanish GDP.

Some economists question whether seasonal factors such as tourism can have a significant impact on unemployment, which they say is becoming a long-term problem. Around half of those unemployed have been out of work for more than one year, and there

are now 1.8 million households where none of the occupants are in work. The news came a day after the Spanish central bank forecast that the economy will return to growth before the end of the year. It estimated the economy shrank again in the last quarter, but by only 0.1%. Spain has been hit by a double-dip recession since the collapse of the property market during the financial crisis in 2008.

Search for missing climbers called off The search for three Spanish mountaineers who went missing on Gasherbrum I in northern Pakistan at the beginning of last week has been called off. The climbers – Abel Alonso, from Pontevedra, Álvaro Paredes of Valladolid and Girona resident Xevi Gómez – were part of an 11-person team scaling the 8,068-metre peak, all of whom were Spanish. They lost contact with base camp while at around

7,400 metres altitude, said the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, Manzoor Hussain. “The last contact with base camp was on Monday morning. They told us they were having problems getting down because of the weather, above all the wind, and that they would have to seek shelter.”

Javier Garrido, the expedition organiser, told Efe news agency. “The most likely explanation is that their satellite phones

have run out of battery.”

Two companions who reached the summit at the same time as Alonso, Paredes and Gómez, managed to return to base camp and camp 3, respectively. By the end of last week, the missing climbers were presumed dead.

The expedition has been on Gasherbrum I, the 11th-highest peak in the world, since June 20th.

Spain is not the most corrupt country Despite the number of corruption cases dominating Spanish headlines, recent reports by Transparency International, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the European Council's Group of Countries against Corruption show that Spain is not the most corrupt country in the EU. In Transparency International's latest report, Spain occupied the 30th position out of a total

of 176 countries, ahead of Portugal (33), Poland (41), the Czech Republic (54), Italy (72), Bulgaria (75) and Greece (94).

The least corrupt countries were Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Singapore, Switzerland, Australia, Canada and Holland, in that order. Within the EU, Spain occupied the 13th position. Transparency International's

Global Corruption Barometer, which evaluates 12 institutions (political parties, the government, the armed forces, NGOs, the media, religious entities, companies, the education system, the judiciary, the health system, the police and the public workers sector), found that Spaniards see the political parties as the most corrupt (83 per cent), followed by Parliament (67 per cent) and the judiciary

(51 per cent). In 51 of the 107 countries analysed (including Britain, the United States, Canada, France and Germany), the political parties were perceived as the most corrupt. When it presented its report, Transparency International said corruption "continues devastating societies round the world" and advised governments to take more measures against corruption at all levels.

FCC wins €6 billion contract Spanish construction group FCC announced on Monday that a consortium of which it forms part has been awarded one of the contracts to build the Riyadh underground system in Saudi Arabia in a deal worth €6.070 billion. It said the contract, to build lines 4, 5 and 6 of the new metro system, is the second largest ever

international deal in the history of the Spanish construction industry. The Spanish group's main consortium partners are the Korean company Samsung and the French company Alstom. The other members are Strukton of the Netherlands, Freyssinet Saudi Arabia, Typsa of Spain and Setec of France.

The project is to be executed in five years, and will employ 15,000 people. The Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) awarded a total of three contracts worth a combined €16.3 billion.

The other contracts were awarded to the Bechtel Group and Ansaldo of Italy. FCC’s

contract includes the construction of 64.6 kilometres of rail track: 29.8 kilometres of viaducts, 26.6 kilometres of underground track, and 8.2 kilometres of overground track. The Riyadh Metro, on which work began in July 2012, is currently one of the largest public works projects in the world.

Unusual refuge for unwanted pet turtles

The capital's main atocha railway station's tropical garden, located in its former concourse, is now inhabited by around 300 turtles of different species, acquired from owners who for one reason or another could no longer keep them as pets. many brought them to this warm, safe place because their children had grown up and were no longer interested in looking after them; but whatever the reasons, the turtles began to populate atocha’s covered wetlands. at the last count in 2012, there were 275 animals. “We take them out one by one, we count them and tidy them up a bit,” said turtle keeper aurora Peña.

Tougher punishment for drunk drivers

The Cabinet has approved the Traffic authority's proposal to slap €1,000 fines on motorists caught driving under the influence, twice as much as the previous sanction. The maximum blood alcohol content limit continues to be 0.25 mg /l (or 0.15 mg/l for newly licensed drivers). Over 0.60 mg/l, motorists face prison terms of three to six months or up to three months of community work; they will also lose their licences for one to four years. Between 0.50mg/l and 0.60mg/l, drivers will lose six points. The new law also makes bike helmets mandatory for minors riding inside and outside urban centres.

Trafficked children saved from exploitation

The FBI said on Monday that it has rescued 105 children and arrested 150 pimps in 76 US cities over the weekend, in an operation against child prostitution.

The largest numbers of children rescued were in San Francisco, Detroit, Milwaukee, Denver and New Orleans. FBI assistant director Ronald Hosko said the Operation Cross Country VII raids had been the agency's largest action against child exploitation. The FBI said 2,700 children have been rescued in such US raids since 2003. The victims in

the most recent raids were almost all girls and range in age from 13 to 17, who had been prostituted in a variety of locations, including truck stops, casinos and motels as well as on social media and online advertisements. Assets of more than $3.1m (£2m) have been seized. Mr Hosko said the accused had preyed on vulnerable teenagers, exploiting them over a

period of time. Since 2003, some 1,350 people have been convicted in such cases, including life prison sentences for 10 pimps, the FBI said.

The US justice department has estimated as many as 450,000 children run away from home each year. It says a third of teens living on the street will be lured toward prostitution within 48 hours of leaving home.

Some lawmakers have said further legal protections are needed.

Oregon Senator Ron Wyden has introduced a bill to require local police, as well as foster care and child welfare programmes to identify children lured into sex trafficking as victims of abuse and neglect, making them eligible for protection and services.

MPs condemn banana insult to black minister

Italian politicians reacted angrily after the country's first black minister had bananas thrown at her during a political rally last Friday.

Congolese-born Integration Minister Ms Cecile Kyenge was speaking at a Democratic Party (PD) rally in Cervia when an unidentified spectator threw bananas towards the stage, narrowly missing her.

Responding on Twitter,

Ms Kyenge, who has suffered racial abuse in the past, called the incident "sad" and "a waste of food". But Environment Minister Andrea Orlando said on Twitter he felt the "utmost indignation" over the incident. Italian politicians rallied behind her on Saturday with messages of support and condemnation. Education Minister Maria Chiara Carrozza praised Ms

Kyenge for her courage and determination in such a hostile climate.

Veneto regional governor Luca Zaia from the anti-immigration Northern League also spoke out against the incident, saying: "Throwing bananas, personal insults ... acts like these play no part in the civilised and democratic discussion needed between the minister and those who don't share her opinion."

Slurs and threats suffered by Ms Kyenge have highlighted the extent of casual racism in Italian society.

Senate vice-president Roberto Calderoli, of the Northern League, faced calls to quit earlier this month after making the orangutan remarks. He told parliament he had made a "serious mistake" with his "offensive" comment and he would send Ms Kyenge a bunch of roses.

A change in the law means it has now become legal to insult the president. Parliament agreed last week to amend legislation dating back to 1881 in favour of freedom of speech. Until now, anyone tempted to offend the head of state risked a fine. In March, the european court of Human rights ruled France violated freedom of expression by fining a man for insulting former French President nicolas Sarkozy. The abuse, repeating words that Mr Sarkozy himself had used previously, was a crude version of "get lost!" The european court said the man's conviction and his €30 fine had been "disproportionate". The president now needs to prove there has been slander or defamation towards him. UnITed STATeS

Seven killed in Florida hostage siege

A gunman holding hostages in a building near Miami killed six people before being shot dead by police on Saturday. Officers stormed the block of flats in Hialeah, north of Miami, on Saturday morning after a stand-off lasting several hours. Five of the victims were found inside the complex. Another man was killed while walking across a street outside. Police were called after shots were fired on Friday evening. They said gunman Pedro Vargas, 43, set his apartment on fire. When the building manager and his wife noticed the smoke and ran to his apartment, he shot them dead. The attacker went on to kill a man walking in the street and a family of three who lived downstairs. Police say there was no clear motive for the shooting. cAnAdA

Memorial for train blast victims Around 1,000 mourners, including family members of the victims, filled Saint Agnes church in Lac Megantic for a memorial service on Saturday, three weeks after a train disaster killed 47 people. Prime Minister Stephen Harper was among them. Hundreds more gathered outside to watch the service on a big screen.

A driverless train carrying crude oil derailed and exploded in the centre of Lac Megantic on July 6th. Inquiries are continuing into the cause of blast, which destroyed a large area of the town and forced some 2,000 residents to flee their homes. Investigators have said the train's handbrakes, which apparently failed when it was parked, are one focus of their inquiries. The town centre is being treated as a crime scene.

Pope: Who am I to judge gay people? Pope Francis has said gays should not be marginalised but integrated into society. Speaking to reporters on a flight back from Brazil, he reaffirmed the Roman Catholic Church's position that homosexual acts were sinful, but homosexual orientation was not.

"If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge them?" he said.

Pope Francis was responding to questions about whether there was a "gay lobby" in the Vatican. His remarks on gay people are being seen as much less judgemental than his predecessor's position on the issue. He also said he wanted a greater role for women in the Church, but insisted they could not be priests. Pope Benedict XVI signed a document in 2005 that said men with deeprooted homosexual tendencies should not be priests. But Pope Francis said gay clergymen should be forgiven and their sins forgotten. "The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this very well," Pope Francis said in a wide-ranging 80-minute long interview with Vatican journalists. "It says they should not be marginalised because of this but that they must be integrated into society."

Before leaving Brazil, Pope Francis gave a highly unusual one-to-one interview to a Brazilian TV programme. The interview was shown not

long after the Pope departed for Rome. He was asked about the moment on his visit when his driver took a wrong turn and his vehicle was surrounded by crowds. "I don't feel afraid," he answered. "I know that noone dies before their time." Asked about the recent protests by young people on the streets of Brazil, the Pope said: "The young person is essentially a non-conformist, and this is

very beautiful. It is necessary to listen to young people, give them places to express themselves and to be careful that they aren't manipulated."

Asked about his simple lifestyle and use of a small car, he said it wasn't a good example when a priest had the latest model of a car or a top brand. "At this moment I believe God is asking us for more simplicity," he added.

At least 38 dead in coach crash plunge

A coach plunged off a flyover in southern Italy on Monday, leaving at least 38 people dead in the country's worst road accident for decades.

The coach hit several vehicles before smashing through a barrier and toppling down a steep slope near the town of Avellino, in the Campania region. At least 10 people were injured, some of them seriously. The coach was taking about 50 people, including children, back to Naples following a pilgrimage.

The cause of the accident is not yet known. The head of the local fire brigade division, Alessio Barbarulo, said barriers on bridges would normally prevent such accidents but "evidently it seems the

impact was so strong that even the barrier gave way".

A survivor said the driver, who was among the dead, appeared to have lost control of the bus, possibly after a tyre punctured. Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi said the vehicle had passed its annual inspection in March, and there was no indication of technical problems.

The final number of victims remains unclear, with local officials saying 38 died while the transport ministry in Rome spoke of 39.

Exactly 10 years ago, another accident on the same stretch of motorway claimed six lives and injured 11 other people.

Obama warns of 'hard choices' President Barack Obama has welcomed Middle East peace talks scheduled to begin on Monday evening but cautioned that "hard choices" lie ahead. He spoke on Monday after US Secretary of State John Kerry named a former US ambassador to Israel as the lead negotiator.

The talks – stalled since 2010 – follow six visits to the Middle East in the last five months by Mr Kerry.

The breakthrough came as Israel approved the release of more than 100 Palestinian prisoners. The move, which split the Israeli cabinet, is to take place in stages over several months.

At a press conference in Washington DC on Monday, Mr Kerry urged both sides to make "reasonable compromises" for peace. He was joined by Martin Indyk, whom he

appointed as US special envoy to the talks. He told reporters: "It is a daunting and humbling challenge, but one that I cannot desist from." The seasoned diplomat played a key role in the failed Camp David talks of 2000 under former President Bill Clinton. State department spokeswoman Jen Psaki suggested the initial talks would be to chart a way

forward rather than try to tackle the thorny issues between the two sides.

Major sticking points include the future of Israeli settlements on the West Bank, the status of Jerusalem and the fate of Palestinian refugees. The issue of settlement building halted the last direct talks in September 2010.

'Gradual power transfer' in Cuba President Raul Castro has said power in Cuba is being gradually transferred, in a speech celebrating 60 years since the start of the revolution last Friday. He said the revolutionaries were giving way to a new generation who would keep socialist ideals alive. Several Latin American leaders had gathered in Santiago to mark the

failed Moncada barracks assault on July 26th, 1853, seen as the start of Fidel Castro's revolution. The older Castro brother relinquished power in 2008 after a series of health issues. He did not attend Friday's celebrations in Santiago.

In Fidel's time it was customary to make big announcements on July 26th, but Raul has been

keeping a lower profile at the event. This year, President Castro – who has been pushing a string of economic and political changes in the country – only paid tribute to his brother and the revolution. Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro, Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega and Uruguay's Jose Mujica were among dignitaries in the audience.

The annual July 26th rally marks the anniversary of the first battle of the Cuban revolution when Fidel, along with Raul, led an attack on the Moncada barracks. It was successfully repelled by the army of dictator Fulgencio Batista. The Castro brothers were sent to prison but later released.

Militants attack Pakistan gaol

Taliban militants wearing police uniform launched an assault on a prison in the town of Dera Ismail Khan in north-west Pakistan at around midnight on Monday.

Gunmen then opened fire with rocket-propelled grenades and machineguns, police chief Sohail Khalid said. The prison houses hundreds of Taliban and militants from banned groups. He said the attackers were chanting "God is great" and "Long live the Taliban”. Pakistani

Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid has claimed responsibility and said around 300 prisoners had been freed.

Officials said that authorities had been aware of a threat to attack the prison in recent weeks. Provincial prisons chief Khalid Abbas said he was not sure if any of the jail's 40 "high-profile" prisoners had escaped. Dera Ismail Khan is the main city in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, in Pakistan's restive, mountainous tribal region.

British jobs market New concerns EWS improves in London over payday Bad weather hols lenders and South East

IN BRIEF

LEICESTERSHIRE

There has been a clear improvement in the British economy and this is being reflected in the jobs market – in parts of the South East and London there are fewer than one job seeker for every vacancy.

A new study suggests the number of vacancies is up 2.5 per cent on a year ago, the biggest increase in new jobs being in manufacturing and legal services. But competition for jobs remains tough in the

north of England and Scotland where the economic recovery is lagging behind. Six job seekers are chasing every vacancy in Scotland, and in real terms wages have actually fallen throughout the country.

Media circus for the royal baby The media circus that descended on London for the royal birth has now dispersed with a parting shot from the Australian press which announced that to mark the birth a Darwin animal park had given Kate and William a baby crocodile aptly named George. The animal park has an attraction known as the cage of death – visitors are submerged in a glass cage into a pool containing crocodiles. On a more serious note, the third in line to the

throne will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge. The bookmakers had George as their odds-on favourite so the name came as little surprise. But the name of the baby was announced just two days after the birth, whereas the Queen took a month to name Charles, her first born son. And it appears the Prince of Wales has received quite a

bit of advice. “Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time,” he said.

Sir John’s new role at Bank of England

The school holidays have begun in Britain with torrential rain, thunder and lightning following a period of glorious sunshine in July. Parking plan for the high street

Sir John Cunliffe, 60, is to become deputy governor for financial stability at the Bank of England.

There are plans to allow parking on double yellow lines on Britain’s roads for 15 minutes to boost trade in high street shops.

Sir John, a former treasury man, described his appointment as “both an honour and an exciting challenge.”

Some Liberal Democrat politicians fear Mr Pickles’ plan would be unworkable.

He will take up the position in November and become an important member of new governor Mark Carney’s team.

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles is looking at the proposal. At present no parking is allowed on double yellow lines and hefty parking fines are imposed on motorists.

Danny Nightingale found Girl, 13, Bomb suspect in murder probe guilty at second trial critical A Ukrainian man being held over bomb attacks near three mosques has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a 75-year-old Asian man.

West Midland Police said the suspect, aged 25,

had been arrested in connection with the murder of Mohammed Saleem in Small Heath, Birmingham, on April 29th. Mr Saleem was stabbed in the back as he made his way home from a mosque.

Diabetes diagnosis shock for Theresa British Home Secretary Theresa May has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and must now inject herself with insulin at least twice a day for the rest of her life, according to The Mail on Sunday newspaper.

A popular Conservative politician, Mrs May said: “The diabetes doesn’t affect how I do the job … it’s a case of head down and getting on with it. It was a real shock and, yes, it took me a while to come to terms with it.”

Spurs in tussle over Gareth Bale

Tottenham striker Gareth Bale continues to be linked with Spanish giants Real Madrid, but Spurs manager Andre VillasBoas insists that there are ongoing talks with the Welsh soccer star’s agent over a new contract at White Hart Lane.

Reports in Spain suggest the 24-year-old winger is eager to move to Madrid and suggest he has already agreed terms on a six-year deal. But VillasBoas is optimistic Bale, who is currently on contract until 2016, will stay at Tottenham.

Danny Nightingale, 38, is a former SAS sniper. He had returned home after serving his country but civilian police found a Glock 9mm pistol and ammunition in his shared Army house in Hertfordshire in September 2011. He said at his trials that he had no knowledge of them and that someone else must have put them there, explaining that he had received a head injury during an endurance marathon in 2009 that affected his memory and caused confusion. Last year, at the first trial, he was jailed for 18 months but, owing to an outcry by the public, the sentence was quashed.

At this new trial Danny, from Crewe in Cheshire, was given two years military detention, suspended for 12 months. At the latest sentencing Judge advocate Jeff Blackett said Nightingale would be going to prison if it were not for the Appeal judges' previous decisions. "In our opinion, the seriousness of this case does merit an immediate custodial sentence but we feel constrained by the decision of their Lordships," he said. Mr Blackett said the soldier's account about how the gun

came to be in his room "lacked credibility". However, he said there were "exceptional circumstances" that allowed the court to suspend the sentence "because of your exceptional character".

The judge also said that "criticism of the prosecution and the Army is unmerited and totally without foundation". He told Nightingale: "We understand how difficult these proceedings have been for you and your family. However, you have brought much of that anguish upon yourself and your public assertions that you are a scapegoat or the victim of some wider political agenda is absolute nonsense. You are simply someone against whom there was a strong prima facie case of serious wrongdoing and, given the dangers to society caused by illegal firearms and their misuse, it was in the public interest to prosecute you. You have now had a fair trial before a civilian judge and an independent and impartial board. All of the issues you wished to raise and all the submissions you wished to make have been fully considered and verdicts properly given. It would have made no difference had you been tried before a civilian jury.

Repair your swimming pool quickly and cheaply by calling me to repair the tiles in your swimming pool with my Underwater Tiling Equipment.

The Underwater Tiling Equipment that I use allows three people at a time to go underwater without the use of bottles (some of my customers have joined me in repairing their tiles and had a lot of fun).

The evidence against you was overwhelming and I have no doubt the verdicts would have been the same."

The hearing was told that Nightingale and his family, who were all present, have spent around £120,000 trying to clear his name.

Outside court, his wife Sally said they would have to sit down and discuss their next steps and would be taking advice about a further appeal. "We are obviously very disappointed with the sentence but pleased Danny will be coming home with us tonight," she said. She added she had been upset by the judge's comments, insisting that the family had been nothing but "honest and open" and had never misled anyone. "Nobody wants to go through what we've been through. I could never have imagined myself in this position. But we've done it for the right reasons and we have been true to ourselves so I have no regrets," she said. The soldier, who served in the former Yugoslavia, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan in an 18year career, has received a medical discharge which will start next February.

A girl of 13 is in a critical condition fighting for her life in Manchester’s Royal Infirmary following an incident on Sunday night that saw her 41-year-old father stabbed to death in a house in Moston, three miles north-east of Manchester city centre. A 34-year-old man suspected of carrying out the attacks has also died after he stole a car at knifepoint and drove it into the side of the Alliance pub in nearby Harpurhey. He was taken to hospital suffering from stab wounds but died soon afterwards. Detective Superintendent Simon Barraclough, from the major incident team, said: "We are in the very early stages of our inquiries and are piecing together the circumstances that led to two men losing their lives and a 13-yearold girl fighting for her life in hospital. Obviously the community will be shocked as to what has happened but we can say we do not believe anyone else was involved and are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident. However, a police presence will remain in the area to offer reassurance and answer any concerns residents may have." Greater Manchester police said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the attacks.

Local News First woman at the helm At 39, Susana Díaz Pacheco will become Andalusia's first woman premier when she takes over from Junta premier José Antonio Griñán at the end of August.

Most of her career has unfolded inside Socialist Party offices rather than in government agencies. She is generally considered a tough woman, a description she started earning when she joined the PSOE’s youth group, Juventudes Socialistas. She was its organisational secretary and later also for the Seville branch of the party, which is the stronghold of the Andalusian Socialists and one of the most influential branches of the Socialist Party as a whole. She was a councilor and deputy mayor for the city of

Seville from 1999 to 2004, an MP for the region between 2004 and 2008, a regional assemblywoman since 2008, a senator appointed by the regional government in 2011-2012, and for the last 15 months she has also headed the Junta premier’s office.

Ever since Griñán appointed her chief of the premier’s office, Susana Díaz has tried to shed her tough woman image. One Socialist leader who has known Díaz since she was a little girl said: “She has always gone out there to win no matter what, but she has learned to negotiate – when you’re in a coalition government you have to be in a permanent state of negotiation with IU (United Left, the PSOE’s governing partner in the region). Her first move

after becoming the Socialist Party’s official candidate in the next regional elections was to confirm that she and IU will maintain the coalition agreement that has enabled both parties to govern the region despite the fact that the opposition Partido Popular obtained the most votes in the March 2012 elections.

In her first speech in her new capacity, Díaz asked party members for support in “this new period” in order to bring “stability” to the party and the government.

Enzo Ferrari retired from racing. In 1950 he launched a series of cars under his name.

Junta premier to step down Junta de Andalucia premier José Antonio Griñán confirmed last week that he will resign from his post following the first Cabinet meeting after the summer break on August 27th. He said Susana Díaz, the current Cabinet and equality chief, will take over from him. Griñán, 67, announced a few weeks ago that he would not be running in the next regional election and a Socialist Party primary subsequently selected Diaz to run in his stead. At a press conference last week, Griñán said that “personal and family motives” were the determining factors for stepping down early. However, the Partido Popular has claimed that the real reason is the ERE scandal that has rocked the Andalusian Socialists, who have governed for the last three decades. The judge in charge of the massive embezzlement case has already indicted 20 current or former regional government officials, and some observers predicted Griñán would be next.

So far, former regional public works chief Magdalena Álvarez is the highest-ranking official to be targeted by the investigation into an alleged long-running fraud case involving a Junta fund used to help pay

jobless benefits at struggling companies conducting labour adjustment plans (or EREs, in Spanish). As it happened, Griñán made his announcement the day before Manuel Gómez, a former regional comptroller, was scheduled to testify in the ERE case.

At the press conference Griñán acknowledged the ERE case, saying he felt there were no valid “juridical or jurisdictional” reasons to make him a target of the investigation, but he admitted it has affected him at a personal level, “especially the lies”. He also said that “the calendar was already written” and that nobody is “going to write the agenda” of the Socialist Party or the Junta de Andalucia – a clear reference to investigating Judge Mercedes Alaya, whom Socialist leaders claim has a hidden agenda against them.

The next day Manuel Gómez alleged that the entire hierarchy of the ruling Socialist Party in the region was aware of the financial irregularities arising from the so-called ERE case, in which up to €140 million belonging to the fund set up to aid struggling companies to lay off workers is alleged to have been misused

between 2001 and 2010. Gómez said that former regional premier Manuel Chaves and his councilors must have been aware of his reports due to budgetary discrepancies in the fund, which sometimes exceeded €90 million a year in subsidies. The fund, he stated, was a “very singular budgetary disease”.

Griñán has consistently denied knowledge of Gómez’s reports, but the latter told Judge Ayala that “it is absolutely inconceivable” that he was not aware of their general conclusions due to the black hole in the Junta's coffers, which seriously affected budgetary planning for the entire region. Griñán was finance chief of the region under Chaves between 2004 and 2009. Gómez, who is accused of embezzlement and corruption, said that Griñán could have shut down the fund at any time.

One of the men worked at City Hall and took advantage of his position to remove the artworks without arousing suspicion. The other four men were arrested in Leon.

Tax reductions for over-65s

The Town Hall has approved the guidelines to regulate tax concessions for people over 65 who meet the council's requirements, of 15 per cent of iBi and an exemption from the basura tax, up to a limit of €2,900. These concessions are on top of the 30 per cent discount available to all those residents who meet the council's requirements – one of which is that the income of the applicant added to that of any people living with him/her should not exceed the minimum wage. other requirements are being registered with the local council (empadronamiento) and not owing back taxes.

According to the Royal Gibraltar Police, traffic is now flowing normally at the Gibraltar-Spain border after three days of up to seven-hour-long delays caused by increased vehicle searches. On Friday and Saturday, Spanish customs officers stopped thousands of vehicles trying to leave Gibraltar for Spain. On Sunday the delays switched to traffic trying to enter the British territory. There were delays of nearly seven hours for those leaving Gibraltar on Saturday in temperatures of 30C.

Gibraltar's Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said Spanish border officers were "just trying to create a delay by pretending to search" vehicles. He told reporters Spain was "bullying" Gibraltar in response to the creation of an artificial reef in the waters off the Rock, which was made by placing concrete blocks in the sea on Wednesday and Thursday. There has been tension between Spain and Gibraltar over fishing rights, and Mr Picardo said the reef had been built to "prevent Spanish fishermen fishing in a manner that is contrary to our law". A Spanish government statement said: "Spain is fulfilling its duties under European law to monitor its borders and to abide by rules set up to avoid the

illegal traffic of illicit goods and prevent smuggling."

The Foreign Office said the delays stopped after Foreign Secretary William Hague called his counterpart in Madrid and the British ambassador in Madrid raised concerns. Spain has lodged a complaint with the UK over the creation of the artificial reef. Gibraltar residents told reporters that Saturday's delays had meant the territory – which has a population of under 30,000 – had been "gridlocked". They said border guards had been "checking every bit of paperwork", which they said did not normally happen.

Alfred Ballester, founder of the social network group GibBook.com said a protest was held outside the governor of Gibraltar's house after Spanish border guards arrested a cyclist. Mr Ballester said cyclists can normally go to the front of the border crossing queue, but in this case the man was told to go to the back and was arrested when he reportedly questioned why he was being made to go to the back of the queue.

The Gibraltar government said the delays had affected tourists and thousands of people who go in and out of the territory every day to work.

Malaga port workers call strike After a sit-in lasting 52 days, Malaga Port workers on Tuesday called for an indefinite strike starting on August 10th in protest at the dismissal of three men. No peace for the wicked

I

t looks as if the politicians are not going to take a break this summer. Mariano Rajoy was planning on spending a few days in his native Galicia, as he did last year, returning to Madrid before everyone else in order to perfect his plans for saving the country. The Socialists won't want to be too far away from the corridors of power because they have to exploit the Barcenas scandal to the limit while the going is good. The details that are being leaked are strengthening the suspicion that Barcenas could have been dipping his sticky fingers into the Partido Popular coffers on the sly. If that trend continues, the opposition will soon lose the only political weapon they possess that has the remotest chance of bringing the government down.

T

hey harped on endlessly about the EU's economic bail-out last year, at a time when the financial markets were attacking the country mercilessly. They were willing it to happen to make Rajoy and the PP look really bad, but it didn't. It was a case of the enemy without, and the enemy within, so to speak. Now they want to make it look as if the political situation here is beginning to spin out of control and the only solution is for Rajoy to resign and to bring the general election forward. My favourite fantasy is that Rajoy resigns and his deputy, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, takes over. She looks so sweet and harmless, but I suspect she could make Maggie Thatcher look like child's play. She'd soon put the opposition in its place – in fact, she's been doing just that for the past 18 months. Her parliamentary spats with Socialist spokeswoman Soraya Rodriguez are hugely entertaining, with PP Soraya winning hands down every time. I always think of her as little Soraya – she's been described as the Iron Lady as tall as a Coca Cola bottle cap – and the other Soraya as the bloodhound because she always looks as if she's about to burst into tears. So would you if you had to face the other Soraya in Parliament every day!

R

ajoy is going to give his version of the Barcenas affair in Parliament on Thursday – too late for me to be able to write about it. The opposition wants him to keep strictly to that subject, but he insists he will inform the Spanish public about the state of the economy first. The opposition doesn't want that because they know he has

some good news, which will take the sting out of the tail of whatever he has to say about Barcenas. I hope he stops being a gentleman long enough to use the best weapon the PP has for beating the Socialists about the head, that is, the ERE scandal.

Griñán may have someone to step into his shoes but it's highly unlikely that Diaz can hold the Junta together until the next regional election, scheduled for March 2015. In fact, everyone is planning for an election next March and current surveys indicate that the Partido Popular and the Socialist Party would probably get 40 per cent each of the votes, with the Communistdominated United Left picking up 18 per cent. This means the Socialists could repeat the current unholy coalition, which isn't working and never will work. The United Left will do everything in their power to get the upper hand – not a difficult task in a part of the country which has been Socialist, Communist and Anarchist since long before the Civil War. But it means that the same old corruption will continue with no hope of a new broom to sweep it all away.

O

n the other hand, whole chunks of Andalucia voted for the PP the last time around and perhaps by March next year the economy will have improved enough to restore the faith of those voters. However, I doubt that Javier Arenas, the architect of the PP's success last March, will come back and I can't see anyone else on the scene with his charisma and capacity for dogged hard work.

Derailment of legal rights Writes for the English language version of

S

oon after last Wednesday’s tragedy, Renfe union officials came out in defence of the driver of the Alvia high speed train that crashed as it was entering Santiago de Compostela, killing 79 passengers on board and injuring about 170 others. One of the representatives told state broadcaster TVE that no one can reach a conclusion at this stage as to what happened that evening when the train jumped the tracks and smashed into a concrete wall as it sped around a sharp curve.

D

uring the initial moments after the crash, it seemed most likely that the driver, Francisco José Garzón, had been going double the speed limit allowed. Soon after, someone leaked a shocking video taken by a railroad – which surveillance camera eventually was broadcast all over the world – that seemed to confirm the train’s rocket velocity. An hysterical Garzón reportedly also admitted to rescue crews and police, who pulled him out of the train, that he had been going twice the normal speed he should have.

I

mmediately after all these early events, two top rail officials – the president of the Spanish national railroad infrastructure management company Adif and the head of Renfe – both placed the blame on Garzón. This was followed by another rebuke by Interior Minister Jorge Díaz Fernández who told journalists that there was no doubt that the driver was responsible for the crash and would be charged by judicial authorities. Renfe also swung into action by convincing its insurance company Allianz to immediately pay out €60,000 to the families of each of the 79 victims, with other amounts to be given to the injured parties. Of course these are meagre payouts – hundreds of lawsuits worth millions are expected – but Renfe believes it is enough to keep the mourning families content for now.

R

egardless of what a nonexpert’s eye can see in the video and the driver’s own admissions, there is no accounting for top Spanish government officials to jump to conclusions before a court investigation has even begun. It could be said that Garzón’s rights have been violated for being crucified in the press by the Interior minister, and the presidents of Adif and Renfe, Gonzalo Ferré and Julio GómezPomar, who said that the driver should have had “exhaustive”

knowledge of the dangerous curve. The train’s black boxes were set to be opened later on Tuesday as we go to press, and one of the things investigators will be looking at is whether the railroad’s safety mechanisms – including an automatic braking system – were working properly. Garzón may have been at fault but he may not be the only one who should be held responsible, and only a thorough investigation will determine this.

S

o why has the government been so keen on placing exclusive blame on the driver? In October, the government of Brazil is set to award a €12-billion contract for a high-speed train route connecting São Paulo with Rio de Janeiro. It is a bid that a Spanish consortium candidate cannot afford to lose. But one of the clauses in adjudicating the contract is that bidding companies should not have had a fatal accident within the past five years. But now the leaked video of the Alvia train crash has been burnt in everyone’s minds, that bid could be lost.

S

panish companies are also worried that they could also lose out in Kazakhstan, where there are plans to build a high-speed rail link across the steppes of Eurasia between Almaty and the former Soviet republic’s new capital, Astana. King Juan Carlos is also reportedly trying to broker a deal with the Russian government to secure a €14-billion contract for a Moscow-St. Petersburg link while Spanish rail firms are looking with keen interest to the California government’s plans to build a line that would connect the capital Sacramento in the north of the state to San Diego near the Mexican border.

T

hese are lucrative business propositions that Spain, known as a leader in the high speed rail industry, cannot afford to lose out on. But at the same time a man’s constitutional rights may have been trampled on, and while his defence may be weak, Garzón could fall back on an uphill-battle argument that he did not receive a fair trial because of some off-the-cuff public statements made by the Interior minister and the bigwig presidents of Adif and Renfe.

Jenny's Jump is a Winner

Dare devil Jenny Yeates successfully completed her charity parachute jump for the F.A.M.A animal charity just after midday last Thursday, 25th July. After a few hints, tips and instructions she took the step that began her 15,000 foot descent back down to earth with a grin on her face in a tandem parachute jump. A tandem jump is where one person jumps, attached to another more experienced parachutist, an instructor, on the same parachute – in this case skydiver Steve Sunders from the Skydive Spain Centre near Seville. The jump lasted between five and eight minutes, reaching a free fall speed of 130 mph. Jenny from Fuengirola

described the event as “amazing” and said she would definitely do it again . “ I can recommend it to anyone, it is so silent, like the serene silence that you sometimes get just before the birds start to sing at dawn.” She explained how there were three other individual jumpers and three tandem jumps in the same plane which all added to the excitement. “The whole thing was very professional. My tandem partner, Steve told me how he was the stunt double for the parachute shots in the new Batman film so I felt quite confident” she added. “We were nearly three miles up, but it looked more to me. We landed on the ground with a little bit of

Jenny's jump raised close to 1000 Euros for the Costa del Sol animal charity F.A.M.A. (The Foundation for Abandoned and Mistreated Animals). A very grateful and somewhat impressed Pat Coleman who runs the charity and also accompanied Jenny to Seville, simply commented “She was very brave” and then later went on to praise Jenny's good work in general, as a volunteer and committee member for many years, working very hard with car boot sales and auctions, all in aid of the charity. She would like to express a big thank you to Jenny on behalf of all at F.A.M.A.

FIRE! Don’t risk it Hours of delays at the border with Gib After last year’s horrendous fires that devastated hundreds of acres of campo land in this region I have been astounded to see people burning rubbish, garden cuttings etc at this time of year.

Just in case you have just moved to the area and don’t know, IT IS ILLEGAL, and there are huge fines that go with it if you are caught. Many people think that it’s OK because they have a hose pipe that they can quickly turn on if it gets out of hand but fire can spread faster than you can turn the water on at this time of year and, how will your water pump work once the electricity has stopped working because the fire has hit the cables? It is not, of course, just the “extranjeros” that have bonfires throughout the year when they shouldn’t, many Spanish people seem to think it’s OK so

long as they get up at the crack of dawn before the helicopters get up in the air and they don’t get caught. Many Spaniards have campo houses but live in the towns so will still have a home to go to if they burn the rest of us down. Fire does not care about time, it does not wear a watch, and it can engulf whole areas in a matter of hours.

There are certain circumstances when you can get a permit from your local town hall to have a fire so, if you really can’t live without burning for the duration of the ban, get a permit first and follow the safety rules. So for the safety of all of us, our homes and our animals, wait until it’s safe and legal to have a fire. written Wickham, News.

Following the hours and hours of delays at the Spanish border with Gibraltar last weekend, the Office of the Governor of Gibraltar have issued the following statement:

The delays generated at the border over the course of this weekend have been the source of deep concern. Thousands have suffered serious inconvenience and worse in the sweltering weather. The Governor visited the border at the peak time on Saturday afternoon and saw for himself the conditions under which people were having to endure the delays. He said: “It is utterly unacceptable that people are subjected to this kind of treatment in today’s Europe where freedom of movement is a basic human right. It is absolutely wrong that

people’s rights should be used as a political lever in this way”. The Governor has been in constant touch with the FCO at senior level and diplomatic activity involving ministers and ambassadors has continued over the weekend with the UK protesting against Spain’s actions in the strongest terms. The events of Sunday afternoon on the Spanish side of the border have, in the Governor’s words, “gone beyond the pale” and represent a serious escalation of the situation. The Governor has called for calm while the UK acts at the highest level to urge Spain to restore the status quo. Sir Adrian added that he also wanted to thank and congratulate the Royal Gibraltar Police and all those in support who

Many people came up to me and said what a wonderful job the police were doing. I just want to add my appreciation as well.”

Let’s hope that this all sorts itself out again soon but, well done to the Royal Gibraltar Police for their thoughtfulness when people needed them.

La Cala de Mijas Spain is as Costa Women Lions Club on strong as ever the march The La Cala Lions got off to a great start to their new year under the Presidency of Patricia Maxwell.

Together with the La Cala Fencing Club and to the sounds of the bagpipes – grateful thanks to Lesley – they paraded through the village at the inauguration of the Feria. These past twelve months have been incredibly busy for the club and members carried signs explaining to the public that they have raised over €57,000.00 for those in need in just one year! Tony, the diabetic nurse and Wayne kindly loaned them their car and

the photo shows them all outside one of the three Lions' Charity Shops.

The shops are open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm and they are a key factor in their fund raising thanks to their dedicated manageress Rosemary Brabrook and her great team of Lions and many volunteers.

In spite of the heat a great time was had by all which is what living in Spain is all about isn't it? For more information about the club and events please call into the shop or telephone Anne Bowles on 952 46 41 84.

Richard Way, Editor, The Overseas Guides Company (OGC), gives his weekly comment: “Spain’s economy might be on its knees, but the appeal of its Costas as a tourist destination and place to own – and rent out – a holiday home would appear to be as strong as ever.

The number of foreign visitors to Spain during May rose 7.4 per cent compared to the same month last year, according to Spain’s Tourist Office, while for the five months from January to May there was a four per cent year-on-year hike in the number of foreigners arriving in the country. The UK’s love affair with Spain continues with force – no other nationality visited the country in such numbers as the British did during the first five months of the year, with the Balearic and Canary Islands being the favoured areas. Of interest is the fact that the overall number of package holidays to Spain dropped by 6.4 per cent in May to represent 28.8 per cent of the total visitor market. This could feasibly indicate a rise in tourists opting to rent holiday homes privately, an option that can be a more affordable type of holiday if low cost flights are available and the cost of rental is split between a group of friends. One leading rentals website observed that based on enquiries in 2013, people are booking more last minute breaks, with 87 per cent more enquiries being made just one month prior to departure compared to six months prior.

Meanwhile, Overseas Guides Company enquiries about Spain increased by 46 per cent year-on-year for May, showing increasing interest in owning property there.”

The night was a celebration of the new Costa Women’s Russian Costa Women group and its fusion with representatives of the 57 other nationalities that comprise the Costa Women community. Costa Women were delighted to be supported by Luks Marbella – Russian Social and Networking Club, who organised and sponsored the event.

The evening raised 1,320€ for Bancosol Alimentos, to enable a donation of 22,000 kilos of food into their Food Bank for the Malaga region. VIP tables, a silent auction of baskets of TIGS candles, nail art from Estrella Diamante and jammed packed gift bags thanks to 19 sponsors were sold to enable fund raising success. Ali Meehan, Founder of Costa Women said, “Costa Women were delighted to be joined by members from our Costa Russian Women’s group. Wherever we have arrived from, women expats essentially face the same challenges. The event provides a chance to connect, network and

share our stories as well as give back to the Spanish community through a donation to Bancosol.”

Costa Women were also celebrating this week the arrival of their 2000th member. The community has members in most parts of Spain as well as women who want to move to Spain as part of longerterm goals.

On a beautiful afternoon we motored on the new Autovia in the direction of Granada and within 35 minutes arrived at our destination. We had booked dinner for 8pm and, once rested and changed, as it was a glorious afternoon/evening we decided to sit on the terrace of the restaurant and after a couple of Manzanillas (the sherry not the infusion kind!) we proceeded to order some of our old favourites – oysters, buzanos, carabineros, and pepper salad accompanied by a new white wine recommended by the son of the owner, our dear old friend Juan. Savouring every mouthful and resting between courses, we knew there would be no room for dessert so we went straight into the “solo” coffee and the usual ritual of having the Otaola Casera bottle placed on our table so we could help ourselves – always such a lovely gesture. Midnight came and passed and feeling totally replete we slowly wended our way back to our room.

meat if that’s what turns you on). Make a reservation, as it is a very favourite spot during the weekends. You cannot miss it, as there is only one way in to Casabermeja – drive to the end and just before the roundabout that takes you back where you came from, the restaurant is on the corner on your right. The next day we decided to visit the famous and most unusual Cementerio de Casabermeja which has always fascinated us. The beautifully kept cemetery was constructed in the XVIII century and in 2006 was given the title of Cultural Interest and in 1980 was declared a National Monument. It is a great example of the traditional Andalusia architecture and the individual plots line the length of narrow cobbled streets. The unusual pantheons in the cemetery can clearly be seen from the motorway (tall flat fronts with body length tombs at the back), which led to a myth that the inhabitants of Casabermeja buried their dead standing upright! After a short break, as always on our travels, our return journey would not be the same way we had come. We headed for Villanueva La Tapia on the A333 heading for the Embalse (reservoir) de Iznájar – finding ourselves 537 metres above sea level. Just around a corner our first glimpse of the town was like a picture postcard with a very long reservoir (taking three pictures to get it all in) just below it and pure aqua green water as far as the eye could see – not going to be many water shortage problems in this area this winter! Venturing up into the town itself, yet again we encountered very narrow streets – thank goodness Hubby is brilliant at reversing!

Our roving reporter: Antonia Hagelen-McIntosh

We were heading for Riofrio for a trout lunch (what else?) and having no other choice than returning on the road we came in, we looked for signs to Loja needing to find the A328 but, as is quite normal, signs were very few and far between. Hubby is Dutch and has those amazing trekker skills of being able to know exactly where he is and where he is going guided by where the sun lies. Many years of being a boy scout too! Finally in the right direction we encountered a very winding road climbing to 621 metres laced with small olive farms (what else!). So that you know you are on the right track, a large solar panel park looms in sight amongst the freshly harvested cornfields.

Nearing Loja the change of scenery is very evident with lesser amounts of olive trees intermixed with low growing vegetables such as corn. At the first roundabout we took the A92 direction Málaga/Sevilla and once on the Autovia after a few kilometres we took exit 185 for Riofrio.

In the 1600s Riofrio was only a trout fishing area

and it was not until 1964 that it became a trout farm. Choosing one of the many restaurants which have sprung up since my first visit in 1986, we had a table next to a clear mountain water stream in full view of the famous trout breeding farms across the way.

Hubby had trout with almond sauce but as I had chosen the Menu del Día first came the famous salad for one which always is enough for two, next a bowl of shellfish with fideos, then trout with garlic and olive oil washed down with a couple of tinto de veranos each and I finished with my all time favourite pudding of arroz con leche, which was made just as my mother used to with lemon peel in the cooking process and all for the grand total of €21.20 for 2! Unbelievable I hear you say – well get down there and find out for yourselves and even enjoy a walk along the river. Weekends would not be as tranquil as it is a very, very popular location. With tummies full and the heat of the day at full blast we decided to head quickly home for that very much-needed siesta.

Thank you Hubby, quality time yet again.

Dutch artist Ernst Kraft (above) is renowned worldwide for his large scale works, some of which are visible in satellite photos on Google Earth, both in Europe and South America. ‘Jacob and the ladder’, ‘The Tower of Babel’ and ‘Aymara Gate of the sun’ are examples of such works in Bolivia with the theme of a dream or desire to reach the other

Ernst says: “Accepted that there is a "here" ... does not imply that there is a "there" ... There are dreamers who dream so ... they build towers, ladders, bridges and gateways ... but who dares to climb? Who dares to go down …?”

“In former installations, like the Stone maze in Passau, and the Transparent maze, the crux was finding the road, the path”, he says. In his new work Kraft reflects on the transcendence of spaces by dividing them saying: “One gateway is enough to divide the world in two; it takes just one stairway to create a space above and below.” The artist chose for his latest construction plexiglass, stating that: “a gate, even when showing what is behind, still divides and unites even equal looking spaces, just like a transparent and moving stairway creates different levels.”

The exhibition will be open to the public throughout the month of August at Sala Manuel Barbadillo, Avenida de Comandante Benitez, 7, Malaga. Just go over the river bridge by Corte Ingles in the centre of Malaga and turn right towards the sea and port.

Good Ol’ British Indian! Since the end of the Second World War, Bangladeshi restaurants have been spreading across the UK like wildfire and Indian food is now as traditionally British as fish and chips. A fish and chips craving would lead you to seeking out a British chippy, but until now, although there is a wealth of Indian/Pakistani restaurants on the coast, none of them replicate the meals we are so used to back home. The award winning chef at Salina’s Balti House has had 35 years experience in Birmingham so you can rest assured you are going to be served your food just the way you love it.

So confident are they of this that on Monday of last week, Salina’s Balti House generously served over 100 diners with free meals, from 4pm in the afternoon until late into the evening. The lucky diners were treated to chicken pakora and seekh

The Wo l ver i n e Directed by James Mangold Starring: Hugh Jackman, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima Frank Miller and Chris Claremont's 1982 Japanese story arc is one of the most famous and celebrated in comic book history. It has finally been given the cinematic treatment, amidst a loose adaptation of Wolverine's first solo outing. Fans of Claremont's Wolverine rejoice – this Wolverine does it right. The film does its best to keep characters intact while deviating from the comics for the sake of a self-contained story and richer, fuller character development.

After the events of XMen: The Last Stand, Logan (Hugh Jackman) has been living alone in the Canadian wilderness and suffering from recurring dreams about Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) and guilt about her death.

As Logan challenges a group of illegal hunters in a bar, he is found by Yukio (Rila Fukushima), a woman recruited to bring The Wolverine to Yashida (Haruhiko Yamanouchi), a dying Japanese industrialist he saved when he was a

familiar faces picking up back-end duties rather nicely.

Y

h Mr. Wan, what do you have to say for yourself? “The Conjuring” had very good intentions, and for the first twenty minutes, I had hope – but then disaster struck. The thing that all directors have the biggest trouble in trying to convey is real fear. In Wan’s defence, he successfully manages this once, when one of the kids’ legs is getting pulled and she “sees” something in the room. ‘Twas sheer genius, one would even say chilling. But that was it!

B

ecause after that, you could “see” them, and then they were no longer scary. One’s imagination is far scarier than some old rubber-faced witch!

I

have no doubt that the “true” events that took place in that house were indeed frighting – the family probably were terrified – but translating that on to screen is a very tricky job.

I

t’s like Stephen King’s “IT”, a great book, but at the end, wooo, big scary spider! It just doesn’t work. Tarantino proves this point perfectly, in his “infamous”

torture scene in “Reservoir Dogs”, when Steve Madden cuts the cop’s ear off. As soon as Madden positions himself to cut it off, the camera pans off to the side. You see nothing, but it freaks everyone out, because their imagination is better than any Special FX company.

I

hate to say it, but there were moments in this film where I actually laughed out loud during a supposed “scary” bit. The whole thing was like a mishmash of “The Exorcist”, “The Shining”, “The Birds”, “Amitiville” and “Paranormal Activity”. Wan seems to have a thing for creepy ventriloquist dummies, which are quite scary – he made the Jigsaw one for “Saw”, “Dead Silence” was about creepy ventriloquist dolls and “The Conjuring” is no exception, with Annabelle, they are all like creepier versions of “Chucky”.

S

o, there it is, “The Conjuring” is more like regurgitating every horror film made, nothing orginal, nothing new and definitely nothing scary!

O

n the bright side, look up about the house, in which eight generations of families lived and died before the Perrons moved in. Deaths include two documented suicides, a poisoning death, the rape and murder of an 11-year old girl, two drownings, and the passing of four men who froze to death. Most deaths occurred within the Arnold family from which Bathsheba Sherman was descended.

N

ow that is frightening!

A wave of optimism spills into your world which in turn will help eradicate a few hardships and the progress that ensues can bring you significant wealth and abundance too. Focus on tasks, projects and all that needs to be completed or tied up in your life. Your perception and instincts are right on the ball so taking the occasional risk or chance could also pay off. Social activities could prove to be a lot of fun. Your thoughts are the key to your happiness, energising the right thoughts to generate better feelings. There are plenty of opportunities to generate better communication within your relationships right now and by injecting some empathy and compassion into a situation you will dissolve all the hard bitter edges. Work on eliminating outstanding debts and keep a tight control on your spending – it will be worth it. Slow those thoughts down and make sure you are doing what needs to be done as safely and effectively as possible, you have possibly found yourself ahead, but late in the game, so don’t do anything to put things at risk. You can start to settle into a better stride now; there has been a feeling of waiting for the next bombshell, but if you remain cool and collected you will be able to keep doing the things that need to be done. Be open to new ideas and adaptable to changes, go out and socialise and wait to reap the rewards. Your heart can set you free Cancer, in other words if your heart is truly in something amazing things can happen. Your feelings are the most powerful tool that you own. There are now opportunities for you to rise above previous debilitating emotions and direct your life with more confidence and calmness. Others are noticing you, even if they have ignored you in the past – your job however is to just keep moving forward. Life could seem more out of control now than it has been for a while; there is unpredictability about the direction you find yourself travelling in. You will find that you could be emotionally pushed but this can lead to more of your potential coming to the fore, as well helping to increase your understanding of what happened in the past and why. Seek to break routines this week, seeking out new places and new things.

Relationships of all shapes and sizes are highlighted now and it is within those connections that your life starts to blossom. Life has been crazy lately and now it is time to take a breather and this will allow your confidence to rise up and you will attract a lot of attention. Someone close to you could do with a listening ear and may need your words of guidance this week.

LIBRA

It is important to trust a certain snag in a process now as it is happening for a reason. Be strong enough to get all the way inside the emotion it is creating and you will find a way to untangle the knot. Deep feelings and passions from within you are stirring, inside you know what you want and now you have to take action and make it happen. There are magnificent material rewards and wealth potential coming your way, you have been literally tested by fire this year and you have probably identified your limits or breaking points and now here come the opportunities. Past actions now bring rewards; you can find answers and solutions this week.

SAGITTARIUS

This week the home fires are burning and you long to see family or be in the place you call home. There could also be a hidden talent within you or even something that you are interested in that you have denied in the past. Taking care of the daily activities and rolling up your sleeves to get the job done is important right now even if it seems a bit dull, make sure you get it right first November 22nd - time and you will be able to spend time with your favourite people. st December 21

In the past, there have been times of struggles and difficulties, but all that is changing as your ruling planet is trying to bring you the wealth and rewards that you have rightly earned. Just watch how new life adventures and opportunities begin to unfold in your life. Focus on what you can accomplish and others will soon recognise your talents and abilities. You have been given a green light now – so no more stalling. Do you want something you can’t have or just can’t get enough of that makes you want more? Perhaps you have overindulged in something and now it is time to scoop out what you don’t want and create some space for something better. There is great potential for amazing life experiences to happen for you that bring you a lot of personal happiness and satisfaction. So do not get stuck on one thing, use your creativity and branch out. Effort and intention are such integral parts of making things happen this week and with the right emotional ingredients miracles can occur. You are starting a brand new cycle and everything is on the table. You have to make sure that you know why you are choosing a certain direction and if it is based on solid reality and facts. There are limitations to some dreams and their conditions, look deeper within yourself and see what actions can bring you satisfying abundance.

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Sue,

I notice that all cleansers state to follow up with a toner, why is this? Lucy, Fuengirola Dear Lucy,

When you apply your cleanser its job is to dissolve any make up and dirt/impurities on the skin. This is why I recommend a gentle massage as you apply it to give it a chance to work. Remove it by rinsing your skin or use damp cotton wool pads. It will have effectively opened the pores to release dissolved make up. Afterwards apply your toner. Toners are designed to remove excess cleanser and

residue oil or impurities and to help close the pores. If you only use one you are really only doing half the job. A tip for the summer is to keep your toner in the fridge and you will find it immensely refreshing. Do make sure your toner doesn't contain any alcohol which causes unnecessary drying out of the skin, try to make sure both don't contain parabens. A good cleanser and toner are an essential part of skin care. Some well known branded ones often appear to be rather expensive but are well worth it in the end as they do a better job and generally last a long time.

Tel: 952 917 126

Dear Sue,

Both my husband and I have noticed that our big toe nails have developed ridges and are a funny greenish colour. What can we do? Antonia, Competa Dear Antonia,

This is a very common problem at this time of year and is actually a nail fungus. When we cut our toe nails we often use something sharp to clean under the nail and it is very easy to push this skin too far back, then when we shower, bathe or swim water gets trapped inside and with these high temperatures it acts like a little greenhouse and small spores that are the fungus love moisture and heat and so multiply. You should see your doctor who will take a sample of this and send it off to be analyzed, this will reveal if it is a bacterial or viral fungus. Often the doctor will prescribe pills but these can be very harsh on your

liver. Keep your nails short and every couple of days clean thoroughly to lift out any fungus that is there and apply a specialised lotion not only on the nail but also in the gap you have created between toe and skin. There are lotions available that treat both viral and bacterial fungus, which could save you a trip to the doctor. It can take months to cure this so try to keep your feet dry, if you have problems reaching them after a shower use a hair drier.

Although I get a product sent from America to treat this common problem many of my clients have great success with "Dr G". The great news for the ladies is you don't have to refrain from using nail varnish which is a great way to disguise it. It is no surprise both of you have it as it is contagious, so keep to your own towel and preferably use kitchen paper to dry the affected area that you can then throw away. Dear Calvin,

Lords

Liz, Casabermeja Dear Liz ,

Congratulations on your new addition to the family. The majority of newborns have fine hair to start with and you will find that in most cases they will lose this baby hair, so at the moment you are not seeing the true texture and density of the hair. There are no hard and fast rules when a baby’s hair can be cut, but I feel it’s better to wait until the baby can support itself as it makes things a lot easier. I personally prefer to wait until a child is a year old before I would cut his hair in the salon. Dear Calvin,

Normally during the summer my hair is very dry so on a Sunday I put a treatment on it and go and work in the garden for an

hour before washing it off. This last week I got a bit carried away and left the treatment on for four hours! Despite washing my hair several times I can only describe it as feeling "cloggy". How do I get my hair back to normal? Maureen, Mijas

Dear Maureen,

It sounds to me like you haven't washed all of the treatment out of your hair properly. There are two types of treatments for repairing the hair, these are oil treatments or protein treatments. The oil treatment coats the hair but will not be absorbed and will temporarily make the hair feel stronger and softer.

The best way to remove the treatment is to apply your shampoo directly onto dry hair as this will break down the oil, then apply water and shampoo as normal. This will ensure all the oil is removed and your hair will not have that cloggy feel. Protein treatments are different in that they are absorbed by the hair. They are designed to rebuild the structure of your hair, which has been broken down by the sun, blowdrying, straighteners, or wind and heat in general.

As this treatment rebuilds from the inside always ensure that after shampooing you finish with a conditioner, as this seals in the treatment by closing the cuticle. If you have any questions for Calvin or Sue, you can contact them on 633 733 374 (Calvin) or 952 473 681 (Sue).

Contemporary lifestyle and celebrity gossip

A lot of people’s reactions have been “you’ve got to be kidding me!” but now...

Blonde bombshell to be played by Kerry … and as long as she keeps her mouth shut she might just get away with it With the blonde hair, curvy figure and that sexy, breathy voice, you would instantly recognise the original Marilyn Monroe.

Now Kerry Katona has revealed that she is to portray the blonde bombshell in an upcoming West End Musical ‘Norma Jean the Musical’. The news comes after the 32year-old Atomic Kitten star revealed that she was bankrupt for a second time.

However, it seems that things are now on the up for Kerry who retweeted the news that she would be playing the iconic film star in a new stage

adaptation of her life.

Speaking about the role, Kerry said: “I'm thrilled to have been given this opportunity to play one of the world's biggest female icons and can't wait to get to work. A successful career in drama has always been a main goal of mine and this role is a challenge but one I'm going to grab with both hands.”

Writer Belvedere Pashun said: “Marilyn's life was one of extremes – poverty, abandonment, abuse followed by a flowering beauty which brought attention, fame, wealth and power and then the well documented tragic fall. I needed an actor of huge talent,

personality and experience – Kerry was at the top of my list. This show will change the shape of people's perceptions of Marilyn Monroe and we expect to announce a new star of drama on stage and screen with Kerry's performance.” Kerry has now started rehearsals ahead of a pressure filled preview of the show on September 22nd to the media. It should be said that special occasions Kerry indeed scrub up well and certainly has curves by bucket load but, whether will be able to pull it remains to be seen.

Fashion sunglasses may not be all they’re supposed to be - take care of your eyes in the sun

Hot sunshine, sandy beaches and a sparkling sea are all recipes for a great summer, but can cause problems for your eyes. Leading local experts have released the following advice for keeping your eyes in top condition this summer. 1. Protect your eyes from the sun. ‘Excessive exposure to UV rays causes a painful irritation to the cornea at the front of the eye. In extreme circumstances this can lead to cancer of the cornea, age related macular degeneration, cataracts and even blindness.’ Everyone should wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun. Check sunglasses comply with UNE-EN 1836:2006 +

A1:2008 or bear the CE kite mark and are marked UV 400. If you already have sunglasses and aren’t sure if they offer the right protection, take them into your local opticians to be UV tested. Look for styles which are large, or wraparound to minimise light entering the eyes from the side. 2. Be careful of sand and small objects getting into your eye. It is easy for sand or small objects to get into your eye when you’re enjoying swimming and spending time on the beach. If this happens take the following steps: • Try not to rub your eyes as this could scratch the cornea. • Do not rinse your eyes with running water, the

eye will water to flush out the object naturally. • If it is still painful and you think the object is still in your eye, go to your nearest opticians who will try to locate and remove the object. If this does not help you, the Optometrist will refer you to the specialist in the nearest hospital, who will take out the object and prescribe you an ointment to heal any damage it may have caused. 3. Don’t wait until you return home to seek advice. It is not advisable to wait until you go home to consult the experts. Even something like an eye infection can become serious if it is not suitably treated, so don’t be afraid

to go into an optician and ask for help, many speak English. John Fisher from the UK was on holiday in Denia in October 2012 when one windy day he felt like something was blown into his eye. Suffering a large amount of discomfort he washed his eye with running water to try to rinse out the object, to no avail. Over the next few hours his vision started to deteriorate, so he decided to ask advice from an opticians in Benidorm. The optician’s team quickly saw that there was something seriously wrong and identified that Mr. Fisher had a very aggressive infection. They believed it was caused from something that

scratched his eye causing a cut, which later became infected through contact with water. They referred him to the local hospital and stressed that he must seek help or risk permanent vision loss. Their concern and well explained advice made him overcome his nerves and go to the hospital and as a result he got almost 90% of his vision back. 4. Travel with contact lenses and glasses. Using glasses as well as contact lenses are advised whilst on holiday, so don’t leave them at home. Swimming in contact lenses is not recommended, and plane

travel and bright sunlight can make eyes dry and uncomfortable for contact lens wearers. Make sure you have enough lenses and cleaning solution for the duration of your trip and take eye drops if you suffer from dry eyes. Muriel Litchfield I live in Spain and I heard that I am to lose my winter fuel allowance. Would you mind telling me who actually made the decision because it is obvious to me that that person does not know what they are talking about. So here is a letter to whoever decided we shouldn’t be entitiled to the winter fuel allowance:

I am 77 and I have arthritis. I am on a drug called Sintrome which keeps the blood thin, and so therefore in the winter it is very hard to get warm. I have the heating on (aircon) and I also wear thermal underwear, and when I sit watching TV I have a blanket over my knees and there are times when I need to have a hot water bottle.

The wind comes from over the mountains and there is snow there all winter, enough that they have a

skiing competition there. You forget that we live in higher temperatures than the UK and so therefore we feel the cold at a higher temperature. You have a heatwave on in the UK at the moment that will last, if you are lucky, a week or so. Here we have very hot temperatures for weeks during which we have to have aircon working to keep cool enough. In no way am I complaining about the weather. I am complaining about the way you treat us pensioners, and the way you treat others who haven't worked like some of us have until retirement age. I retired at 65. In Spain I get nothing because I have never worked here. What a pity you don't try this then you wouldn't have all the money problems you have. I would really like to know what are you going to do to the pensioner next? As we live here we can't claim any other benifits. Be careful what you set in motion…

Betty Garfield I moved here a couple of years ago following my divorce and found it a bit hard to fit in.... until I discovered The News that is! I make sure I get my copy every week to find out what is going on and where. I have been to Buzby’s (where I was made most welcome – what a lovely

you will be old one day! Thank you.

Still proud to be British.

Editor says: I have lived here for almost 17 years and we have had mild winters some years but have also had winters that have seen the tempratures plummet to as low as -7ºC I use a lot of wood during the winter months as we have iron and steel “estufas” so no central heating to come home to after work. It takes time to heat the house through even when the fires are lit and, inbetween times you have to sit with a duvet or rug over you to keep warm. It’s all very well those that make the decisions deciding that we live in “sunny Spain” but they should come out here and try living, in a house that’s built for the heat of the summer, in the middle of winter – it’s no joke!

Coin where I have seen a couple of the excellent shows they put on there. I am now busy working my way through the restaurants that advertise in your paper and, so far, have not had a bad meal yet. I have also joined a few of the clubs and societies that put bits in your paper about what they are doing and I have found everybody to be most welcoming and kind to me. I think it would have been all too easy for me to sit in my flat with the telly on and feel lonely but, there’s no excuse for that as there are so many wonderful people here on the Costa. By the way, I’m in my 60’s so not exactly a spring chicken to start again but, I’m having the time of my life! Thank you so much. Editor says: Good for you! There are many good people here on the Costa del Sol and inland that are more than happy to make you feel welcome and have a lot of fun while doing it. Keep a look out for trips and also Xmas trips and specials coming up soon.

Comment By Ken Campbell

The Summer Triangle There are 88 official constellations; many of them first depicted by the Greeks, Romans and Babylonians hundreds if not thousands of years ago.

B

ut there are also several unofficial groupings of stars that can make patterns known as asterisms, and at this time of the year there is a very prominent asterism directly over head.

I

f you go outside around 10.00pm and look directly above you, you will see a very bright star; this is Vega in the constellation of Lyra the harp. Now look to the left of Vega and you should be able to see another bright star called Deneb. Deneb marks the tail of Cygnus the swan. The last star in the trio is Altair in the constellation Aquila the eagle.

E

ach of the three stars is part of their own separate constellation but in the mid 1950’s British Astronomer Sir Patrick Moore noticed the asterism and coined the phrase ‘The Summer Triangle’.

A

ll three stars appear to be more or less the same brightness as one another but in truth they are vastly different in size, brightness and distance from us. Altair is the closest star out of the three; it is 16 light years away and 10 times brighter than our Sun. The light that you are seeing left Altair in 1997 and has been travelling toward us at 186,000 miles per second.

V

ega is 52 times brighter than the Sun and is 25 light years away. What were you doing in 1988 when the light from Vega began its journey towards us?

B

ut Deneb is a super-giant 70,000 times bigger than the Sun and a massive 1800 light years away. It is one of the most distant stars that you can see with the naked eye. The Romans were in England when the light that you can see left Deneb. Because of the massive distance to Deneb measurements of its true size and distance can only be guessed at, as there is no real way of establishing something so far away from us.

T

he summer triangle is such a conspicuous pattern that it can easily be recognised and can be used to help find other constellations in the area. Vega is the brightest of the three and shines with a dazzling blue/white colour. Once you have identified Vega try to make out the rest of the constellation of Lyra the Harp; it is four fainter stars forming a crooked square box below Vega. Directly

between the two lower stars of Lyra is one of my favourite deep sky objects called M57 the Ring Nebular. M57 is the remains of a star that died many thousands of years ago. As the name suggests it forms a lovely ring or doughnut shape that can easily be seen with binoculars looking like a small fuzzy blob. But through a small telescope the whole of the ring shape can be seen.

D

eneb marks the tail of Cygnus the swan flying gracefully, wings stretched out, across the sky. It has also been called the Northern Cross as the seven stars form a huge perfect crucifix. The last star of the cross that marks the swan’s head is actually a double star called Alberio and again this star is always on my list to look at with a telescope. It is the striking difference in colour of the two stars that make it so interesting. One star is vivid blue while the other is bright yellow and being so close together when you see them through a telescope the colour really is very dramatic.

C

ygnus also happens to lie right along the path of the Milky Way and if you happen to live in a very dark area then this is the best time of the year to see the Milky Way directly overhead and stretching right across the sky horizon to horizon. The Milky Way is actually part of our own Galaxy and is made up of millions of stars all so far away that they appear to merge into one faint milky river running across the sky. But if you sweep around the area with binoculars I guarantee that you will be rewarded with tens of thousands of stars.

W

atch out for the International Space Station as it sweeps right past Altair this Sunday 4th August at 22.25 coming from the Southeast toward the Northwest.

Hamilton wins his first race for Mercedes Lewis Hamilton dominated from his pole position at the Hungaroring, a race that in the past has been second only to Monaco as a bit of a procession. This one was different though with many overtakes, and some great driving by several of the drivers. That along with team's having different tyre strategies, and temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit), all made for one of the most interesting races in dry conditions that the circuit has produced since it started being used for the race in 1986.

It was Hamilton’s first victory for his new team, Mercedes, and his fourth victory in Budapest, which equals the record held by Michael Schumacher.

“I think this is probably one of the most important Grand Prix wins of my career, to go to a new team and to win,” Hamilton said. “To move to a new team, and the team was struggling last year, and then to win.” Kimi Raikkonen finished the race in second position in his Lotus, 10.9 seconds behind Hamilton, while Sebastian Vettel finished third in his Red Bull, another 1.5 seconds behind Raikkonen.

Hamilton has had several incidents of bad luck this season, notably when he dropped out of the lead of the British Grand Prix on June 30th after his rear tyre exploded. He was also under pressure with his teammate, Nico Rosberg, winning at Monaco and the British Grand Prix.

But in the heat of Budapest, the tyres and the car all held together for the 70-lap race, as Hamilton produced a stunning drive at one of F1's most physically draining tracks. Hamilton roared off the grid getting the perfect start, while Vettel, who started second and on the dirtier side of the track, battled to hold off Romain Grosjean, in the other Lotus, as the three drivers entered the first corner.

“We really didn’t expect to be on pole,” said Hamilton. “I got out to Turn

one in first position, and that was the most important thing.”

Another factor was the different strategies of other drivers getting in the way of his opponents, particularly the strategy of Hamilton's old teammate Jenson Button in the McLaren Mercedes. Button started the race in only 13th position, but jumped to eighth on the first lap, and unlike the majority of drivers including the first eight on the grid he began the race with the medium hard tyres rather than the soft ones. The medium tyres are slower, but wear out less quickly. That allowed Button to stay out longer before his first pit stop, with the result that he blocked Vettel after the German’s pit stop on Lap 11 until Button’s pit stop on Lap 24, that in effect resulted in Hamilton being able to build up an advantage of

13.3 seconds over all his rivals. “I guess he did me a favour,” Hamilton said of Button.

Vettel leads the series with 172 points, while Raikkonen is second with 134, Fernando Alonso, of Ferrari, who finished the race in fifth, is third with

133 points, and Hamilton is fourth with 124.

Hamilton left the circuit optimistic for the second half of the season, which begins with the Belgian Grand Prix in SpaFrancorchamps on August. 25th. “If we can be quick here, in a race with these track temperatures, I’m really hopeful that we can be very competitive everywhere else, so I’m hoping this could be a turning point for us,” he said. Astronaut’s private taxi development entering final phase NASA has just released a draft solicitation for the fourth and final development phase of its Commercial Crew Program, which is still expected to result in a crewed space launch to the International Space Station from U.S. soil by late 2017, according to the document.

The Commercial Crew Program is a NASA effort that subsidises commercial development of systems to ferry astronauts to and from the space station. According to the draft solicitation, there would be two such flights per year, once NASA

places its first task order for a crewed flight.

Before NASA releases the final solicitation this autumn, the agency will host a pre-solicitation conference with industry at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Augist 1st and 2nd, according to the draft. As expected, the contract will be a fixed-priced deal administered under the Federal Acquisition Regulations. So far, NASA has mostly relied on funded Space Act Agreements to subsidise development of commercially designed spacecraft.

Former Birmingham Hull FC. Make striker Christian Challenge Benitez dies at 27 Cup Final

Former Birmingham striker Christian Benitez has died at the age of 27. The Ecuador international was admitted to hospital with severe stomach pains shortly after making his debut for Qatari side El Jaish on Sunday. His heart failed hours later, the Ecuador Football Federation said.

Benitez, capped 58 times by his country, spent the 200910 season on loan at Blues from Santos Laguna but returned to the Mexican side when they decided not to sign him permanently. Benitez, also known as 'Chucho', had been playing in El Jaish's 2-0 win against Qatar Sports Club in the Sheikh Jassem Cup.

History in the making

Inbee Park the 25-year-old golfer from Seoul heads to St Andrews in Scotland knowing victory in the Women's British Open would make her the first player, male or female, to win four professional majors in the same year.

Tiger Woods held the quartet of men's majors simultaneously, but the sequence began when he won the US Open in 2000. He completed the "Tiger

Slam" at the following year's Masters. Park has collected a remarkable six victories already in 2013, claiming the second major of her career when she won the Kraft Nabisco title in April. By winning the year's first three majors, Park has already matched the feat of the great Babe Zaharias in 1950. In those days that was enough to be considered a women's Grand Slam.

Hull FC will face Wigan in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley on 24th August after they saw off holders Warrington in their last four tie.

The Wires raced into the lead with early tries from Joel Monaghan and Trent Waterhouse, but Hull responded through Tom Lineham and Richard Whiting. Aaron Heremaia's second-half try gave Hull an eight-point cushion. Warrington threatened a fightback when Ben Currie crossed, but the Black and Whites held firm to claim the win.

This will be the third time that the two clubs have contested the Challenge Cup final. Wigan were victorious in 1959 and 1985.

Wayne’s Weekly Poker Tips

Tournament poker is a game of waiting if you are playing a deep-stack or double-your-money format. If you are a player who likes to play fast and loose maybe you should look at the turbo sit-and-go formats which all the sites offers.

Your deep-stack tournament is where you start with say 1000 chips and the blinds start at 10bb and rise slowly, which means the average online tournament will take a few hours to complete. In this format you need to play tight aggressive in the early levels, only playing a select few hands. When the blinds start to increase you can shift up a gear playing a

wider range. Don't forget when the blinds start to increase throw away any thoughts of limping – unless we are set mining, we need to pump or dump. If the pot is uncontested and you want to play it, raise it! If you are raised in front of you and you think they are raising light don't be afraid to 3bet and don't be afraid to fold if you’re light and they come back over the top of you. Should you hold a monster you have the action you are looking for. This is also the way to play double-your-money format because we are just looking to ladder and finish in the last half – we do not

need to risk going broke because 1st does not pay any more.

Now the short-stack turbo format tournament is ideal for the fast and loose. You normally start off with only 500 big blinds and the blinds increase every 10 mins. You can play tight for the first few levels but in this format – more so at the smaller buy ins – you need to become very aggressive with a wide range of hands very early on. If you don't you will find yourself being blinded out and having to shove with junk because it is very easy to get down to only 10bb in this format due to the speed the blinds increase. In my opinion this format is more luck than skill, but, if you play the micro limit tournaments it can be very good fun playing so loose.

In my last five deepstack tournaments I have reached the final table finishing 2nd (460 started) in my last. On the other hand in the turbo format I have only cashed twice in my last six.

Alonso gets his ear “tweaked”

Ferrari dealt Fernando Alonso a rare public rebuke on his birthday on Monday for critical comments after Sunday's Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix. Alonso finished fifth at the Hungaroring and slipped to third in the championship, 39 points adrift of Red Bull's triple champion Sebastian Vettel with nine races left. Asked afterwards what kind of car he wanted for his birthday, the double world champion told Italian reporters: "The one the others have.”

HotSpot can fail to show up edges, admits inventor The inventor of HotSpot has admitted the system's heat-sensored cameras can fail to show up edges from fast bowlers in the aftermath of Ashton Agar's controversial dismissal at Lord's.

The Decision Review System has come in for widespread criticism throughout the Ashes series and Australia were outraged when Agar was given out on review in their second innings despite HotSpot not showing an edge following a delivery by Tim Bresnan. TV umpire Tony Hill judged there was enough audio evidence to overturn the original decision and HotSpot's inventor Warren Brennan

appeared to justify the Kiwi's call when speaking to the Daily Telegraph. “Even with our latest generation HotSpot cameras there are still occasions when HotSpot will miss fine edges” Brennan admitted. “At Lord's there were half a dozen very fine edges and I believe that HotSpot only missed the Agar one.”

Rain and lightning caused play in the final round to be suspended on two occasions. Both men wanted to finish the tournament on Sunday for scheduling reasons but, after they each parred the 18th twice, play was halted. On Monday, Langer's approach on the fifth playoff hole landed just short of the green and, after chipping on, he missed with a par putt to keep the tournament alive.

Pepe Reina says he was "disappointed" that Liverpool agreed to loan him to Napoli without telling him first. Spaniard Reina, 30, has joined the Italians for the season after the Reds signed Simon Mignolet from Sunderland. In a letter to Liverpool fans, Reina said he had wanted to continue his eight-year stay at Anfield once a move to Barcelona failed to materialise. "It's only natural I'd be disappointed Liverpool agreed to loan me to Napoli without telling me first," he said. "I thought I deserved better than that, even though I understand that difficult decisions have to be taken in football."

Another World Matchplay title for Phil Taylor Phil Taylor claimed the World Matchplay title for the 14th time as he beat Adrian Lewis 18-13 in the final at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. Taylor, 52, fought back from 6-4 behind to claim the victory and win the event for the sixth year in succession.
