Army gives Egypt's Morsi 48 hours to resolve crisis Fearing that President Mohammed Morsi was no longer capable of controlling the country, the army issued a statement on live television on Monday in response to the huge protest marches and violent clashes that have swept Cairo and other cities.

“The Armed Forces repeat their call to respond to the people’s demands, and give everyone 48 hours as a last chance to fulfil the burden of historical circumstance, the statement, signed by Gen Abdulfatah al-Sisi,

the minister of defence and head of the armed forces, said. “If the demands of the people are not met within this period, it will be incumbent upon us to announce a road map for the future and oversee measures to implement it.

The unprecedented step, described by government opponents as a “coup with two days’ notice, stunned the Moslem Brotherhood and supporters of President Morsi, who until the marches were launched on Sunday were confident that only a minority of

people, mostly loyal to the former regime of exPresident Hosni Mubarak, supported opposition calls for him to quit.

Mr Morsi said he was not consulted by the army before it set a 48-hour ultimatum, even though Gen Sisi is a member of Mr Morsi’s cabinet and Mr Morsi is technically head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. Alleging that the statement "may cause confusion in the complex national scene", Mr Morsi vowed to stick to his "national reconciliation"

I was at the PAD charity do on Saturday evening (I’ll tell you more about it in a minute) and we had just sat down to dinner when a lady, beautifully dressed in what appeared to be silk, floaty, mushroom coloured trousers with a wrapover front that made it look like a full length skirt from the front - quite lovely - took a tumble. She was clearly in pain although she made not a jot of fuss about it and an ambulance from Helicopteros Sanitarios was called. They turned up a good half hour later with this poor lady’s leg swelling all the time. So, three things from this come to mind. Firstly that I hope the lady that hurt her leg (that turned out to be broken in two places) is as well as she can be right now. Secondly that I know they usually have to cut off the clothing that you’re wearing and hope that she hasn’t lost those beautiful trousers. And thirdly, why did the ambulance take so long to get there? I would have thought that Helicopteros should have been there at least within 10 minutes so I wonder what the holdup

On Sunday, millions rallied nationwide, urging the president to step down. Large protests continued on Monday with activists storming and ransacking Cairo's Muslim Brotherhood headquarters - the group from which the president hails. Mr Morsi's opponents accuse him of putting the Brotherhood's interests ahead of the country's as a whole. He became Egypt's first Islamist president on June 30th last year, after

Noisy celebrations erupted in Cairo as protesters interpreted the army's ultimatum as spelling the end of Mr Morsi's rule. The army later issued a second statement on its Facebook page emphasising that it "does not aspire to rule and will not overstep its

prescribed role".

National News New taxes announced At last Friday's cabinet meeting, the government approved a new eco-tax and raised the levies on alcohol and tobacco products. The average price of a packet of cigarettes has gone up by 15 cents, while the tax on alcohol is heavier - 10 per cent - with the exception of wine and beer.

estimates higher tobacco taxes will bring in an extra €366 million a year in revenue, and the alcohol tax will bring the total up to €700 million, according to Montoro’s estimates.

Following Brussels’ indications, Spain will levy a fee on CFCs (chlorofluorocarbon gases used in air conditioners, for instance) that it hopes will bring in €340 million this year.

The government had already announced it would be implementing such changes as part of its Stability Plan presented to Brussels. The Treasury hopes to collect around €1 billion from the new taxes, although the exact figure will depend on consumer spending, Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro said.

The government also made reforms to corporate taxes, eliminating a deduction for portfolio deterioration that will save the state around €3.6 billion a year, although the impact will not be felt before 2014. These tax hikes are just the latest in a long series of reforms enacted by Mariano Rajoy's government

Last year, tobacco sales dropped 2.3 per cent. But according to Montero's

during the 18 months he has been.

In December 2011, personal income tax went up. Seven new tax brackets were created, and the maximum rate for the highest earners rose to 52 per cent. Savings were also slapped with a new tax, while property tax increased. In February of last year, corporate taxes went up. Then, in September, VAT rose significantly, and energy companies

Big drop in unemployment

The number of unemployed dropped 127,248 in June, to stand at 4,763,680.

The drop, added to a drop of 85,043 in May, has made this "the best first six months of a year since 2006," an employment ministry spokesman said.

Unemployment figures have been dropping since February. However, EU unemployment figures were not so good. Unemployment in the EU now stands at record12.1 per cent.

Social services Military wants stricter sentences “snatched” children In their new code, the armed forces crack down on sexual harassment, xenophobia, Islamophobia, racism and homophobia. The inclusive list reflects the heterogeneity of the armed forces, which - like the rest of Spanish society includes women, foreigners, Muslims and homosexuals. The new code also introduces unprecedentedly severe penalties for personnel who engage in sexual harassment or homophobic practices. According to the draft leaked to the press, sentences between six months and four years, plus the possible expulsion from service, will be applied to those found guilty of harassment or committing racist or xenophobic acts. Military courts have already handed down sentences against officers

who have been accused by their subordinates of sexual harassment but they have been in line with a section of the code that addresses "abuse of authority."

The proposed new code will specifically outline what constitutes discriminatory crimes against Muslims, gays and women. It punishes any "serious discrimination on grounds of birth, racial or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, religion, belief, opinion, disability or any other condition or personal or social circumstance."

Harassment or discrimination is not limited to interactions between superiors and subordinates, but also between the personnel of the same rank or title, although the penalty is less: six months to two years in prison. The new code – which will replace the current one dating from 1985 - responds to a mandate from the 2011 Rights and Duties of Members of the Armed Forces Law. It complements the new military discipline law, which is currently being reviewed by parliament.

A homeless couple, who claim that social workers at Talavera town hall "snatched" their two sons, aged 11 and two, from them last week when they tried to meet the mayor to explain their situation, said they had spent two days fruitlessly going from the offices of one charity to another. Irina Tkachiv, aged 36, and her partner Santos Manuel Calvo said they went to Talavera de la Reina, a town some 110 kilometres west of Madrid, to ask for financial help from the Red Cross, the Catholic Church charity

Cáritas, the town's social services department, and even the local Women's Institute. They said that after failing to receive any help, they were eventually told to go to the Guardia Civil, who sent them to the town hall to explain their situation.

"When we got to the town hall, we were told that we should leave the children there, and that we should go - they virtually threw us out," Tkachiv said. "It was all over very quickly, in two minutes," Calvo added. "We curse the moment that we went into the town

hall, now we don't even know where the boys are." Ana Santamaría and Paloma Leis of the Social Services department in Talavera, have accused the couple of abandoning the two boys, and have filed a complaint with the police.

Santamaría said the two boys are being held in a juvenile centre, where they can stay for a maximum of six months. A judge will then decide whether the parents can retain custody, or if the court will assume that responsibility.

Separatists fill Camp Nou Nine months after thousands of proindependence supporters took to the streets on Catalonia's national day last year, separatists on Saturday night held one of the biggest concert rallies ever at the Camp Nou football ground in Barcelona to demand that the regional government follows through on its proposal to hold a vote on sovereignty next year.

The event attracted around 90,000 people, who waved independence flags

and held up letters to form large messages on one side of the stadium, such as "Catalonia is not Spain," and "Freedom for Catalonia."

Regional premier Artur Mas of Unió and the ruling CiU's spokesman in Parliament in Madrid, Josep Antoni Duran Lleida of Convergència, gave the event a miss "for personal reasons" although about half of the regional government attended the

rally, with the exception of the Partido Popular.

According to sources, the regional premier has begun shying away from holding a referendum if he cannot win the central government's approval, which has irritated his parliamentary partners in the Catalan Republican Left (ERC).

Government to sell off properties The government has approved a plan to sell off a quarter of its stateowned properties in a bid to raise hundreds of millions to fill its rapidly depleting coffers.

Last week, the Cabinet approved the sale of some 15,000 properties over the next seven years. They include disused army barracks, an aerodrome on the island of Minorca, a military shooting range and thousands of office buildings.

A government spokesman said the portfolio will include around 10 buildings "considered unique", like the mansion house on Madrid's central avenue, the Paseo de la Castellana, that used to house the Secretary of State for Security, and a country estate in Andalusia comprising 35,000 acres of natural parkland planted with cork trees. The government announced plans last year to set up a commission to draw up an

inventory of all stateowned property and identify those that could be sold off. The government is yet to estimate how much money it hopes to raise in the asset sell-off. Last year it raised €90 million in sales of stateowned buildings that had been empty for years and made a €37.5 million in savings by renegotiating rental contracts.

Murder-for-hire suspect nabbed in Madrid United States authorities face an uphill battle with Spain's High Court in the coming months in their attempt to obtain the extradition of a US citizen facing murder-for-hire charges. Aurea Vázquez Ríjos, who was arrested Sunday afternoon as she arrived at Madrid’s Barajas airport, was indicted in 2008 on federal charges of hiring a hitman to murder her wealthy husband, Canadian-born Adam Ahang, who was in the process of divorcing her. The 32-year-old Winnipeg native was beaten and stabbed to death on September 23rd, 2005, on a street in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he had moved to work in real estate development. Vázquez was slightly injured in the attack, which happened when the couple were meeting to discuss the terms of their divorce. Local police

arrested one suspect who was later convicted and sentenced to life, but was released when the real killer was detained in 2008. Vázquez reportedly promised him $3 million if he carried out the murder.

During the investigation, she refused to cooperate with US authorities and later fled to Italy. FBI agents, who have been trailing her since then, alerted Spanish police and Interpol that she was travelling from Italy, a US prosecutor confirmed Monday. FBI spokesman Moises Quiñones told El Pais newspaper that Vázquez came to Madrid to take part in “a tour.” He added that it appeared Vázquez “had grown more confident” and had travelled to other countries. She tried to enter Spain with her US passport. US investigators believe that the extradition proceedings

could take between six and nine months. Under the law, Spanish authorities have 72 hours to take her before a judge. Italy, where she had been living, had refused to extradite her because authorities believed that US prosecutors might seek the death penalty.

A 1971 extradition treaty signed between the United States and Spain also prohibits the extradition of any person “unless the requesting party provides such assurances as the requested party considers sufficient that the death penalty shall not be imposed, or if imposed, shall not be executed.” At a news conference on Monday in San Juan, US Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodríguez said that the charges outlined in the 2008 grand jury indictment only call for a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, but she

declined to clarify whether prosecutors would seek death penalty certification from the US Justice Department.

The last executions in Spain took place in September 1975 when five members of the ETA and FRAP terrorist groups died by firing squads after they were sentenced for the murder of several police officers. Capital punishment in Spain is illegal under the 1978 Constitution, as well as throughout the rest of the European Union. But clauses differ in extradition treaties between individual EU nations and the United States concerning wanted suspects and the death penalty.

Tax agency chief quits

The director general of the tax agency stepped down last Friday, after just a year and a half in the post. Beatriz Viana resigned in the middle of an ongoing scandal over a blunder that attributed the sale of 13 properties worth €1.4 million to Princess Cristina. deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría said that Viana resigned for personal reasons. The tax agency admitted to making two mistakes in the report on Princess Cristina’s assets it sent to the judge investigating the business dealings of her husband, iñaki Urdangarin, who is believed to have misappropriated millions of euros in no-bid contracts from regional governments. The owners of the properties in question came forward to deny that they had purchased the homes or plots of land from the princess.

World News Obama ' blocking asylum requests'

US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden accused President Barack Obama on Monday of denying him his right to asylum, in a statement published by Wikileaks. It was his first public announcement since flying to Russia on 23rd June, where he applied for asylum on Sunday. Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested Snowden could stay on the condition he stops

damaging Russia's "American partners" with his leaks of classified intelligence documents, he withdrew the request.

The 30-year-old fugitive has now submitted asylum requests to a total of 21 countries, including China, France, Ireland and Venezuela, according to a Wikileaks press release. Most of the requests were handed to the Russian consulate at Sheremetyevo airport

Officials name dead firefighters

At press time, the deadly wildfire raging in Arizona remained uncontained, as the 19 elite firefighters killed by the blaze were identified and mourned.

The bodies of the men, aged 21-43, received an honour guard on Monday as they were brought to Phoenix for post-mortem examinations.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has ordered flags in the state to be flown at half-mast, saying it was "as dark a day as I can remember". "I know that it is unbearable for many of you, but it also is unbearable for me," she

said, addressing residents and reporters in the town of Prescott (pop. about 40,000).

It is the highest death toll for a fire crew in a single incident since 9/11. The firefighters, who died on Sunday, were part of a unit called the Granite Mountain Hotshots, and had battled other wildfires in New Mexico and Arizona in recent weeks, officials said. They reportedly covered themselves in foil-lined, heat-resistant tarpaulins in a last-gasp effort to save themselves - but to no avail.

late on Sunday for delivery to the relevant embassies in Moscow.

In his statement, Snowden said President Obama is putting pressure on the countries from which he has requested political asylum. "The president ordered his vice president to pressure the leaders of nations from which I have requested protection to deny my asylum petitions," he said. "This

kind of deception from a world leader is not justice, and neither is the extralegal penalty of exile. These are the old, bad tools of political aggression. Their purpose is to frighten, not me, but those who would come after me."

The former CIA analyst, who at press time was still holed up in a Moscow airport hotel, is wanted by the US on charges of espionage.

Mandela birthday celebrations planned South Africa's President Jacob Zuma has told the nation to begin planning for Nelson Mandela's birthday on July 18th.

The former president and global statesman, who will turn 95, remains critically ill in hospital in Pretoria, where h was admitted on June 8th with a recurring lung infection. President Zuma's comments come after Mr Mandela's ex-wife criticised his governing African National Congress (ANC) party for filming the former president at his home in April. The footage showed Mr

Mandela looking dazed and unsmiling during a visit by one of the ANC's leaders to his home. Winnie MadikizelaMandela told reporters: "I honestly cannot put in words how hurt the family was and it was one of the most insensitive things for anyone to have done." Responding to criticism at the time, the ANC defended its filmed visit, saying it was not a "publicity stunt". Mr Mandela has a long history of lung problems, and was diagnosed with tuberculosis in the 1980s while he was a prisoner on Robben Island.

An anti-terrorism court has sentenced seven cyber activists to between five to ten years in prison for inciting protests, mainly by using Facebook. The men were arrested in September last year, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW), and their trial began in April. They were charged with posting online messages to encourage protests, although they were not accused of directly taking part in demonstrations.

Several of the defendants said they had been tortured into signing confessions, according to HRW. Several Saudi human rights campaigners have recently been imprisoned. Two women were jailed in early June for allegedly inciting a woman against her husband, after they tried to help a Canadian who had complained of abuse by her Saudi husband. indiA

nearly 3,000 people are still missing following floods and landslides which hit india's Uttarakhand state a fortnight ago, the chief minister of the state has said. More than 800 people are reported to have been killed so far but Vijay Bahuguna said the exact number of deaths may never be known.

Some 100,000 people have already been evacuated from the flood-hit region, but hundreds of people are still trapped in the Badrinath, one of the worst affected areas. Swollen rivers have swept away entire villages in the state, where there were many travellers in what is peak tourist season. Briatain’s best-known oil painting, John Constable’s Hay Wain, is back on display at London’s National Gallery after being attacked by a protestor from a pressure group for fathers. A photograph was glued to the 1821 painting, which depicts a scene on the River Stour in Suffolk, but gallery staff responded

rapidly and later confirmed there had been no damage to the original paint. The attack, thought to involve the group Fathers4Justice, came as another campaigner associated with it appeared in court accused of vandalising a portrait of the Queen in Westminster Abbey.

There is in Britain a great deal of interest in the history of steam trains and this week a locomotive named Bittern is to travel up the East Coast mainline at the fastest speed travelled by a steam train in almost half a century.

Built in 1937, the engine is almost identical to the world’s fastest steam locomotive Mallard, which hit a record 126 miles per hour near Grantham in 1938, a speed that remains a record today.

Tevez for Juventus

STRIKER Carlos Tevez is on the move to Juventus, where he will wear the number 10 shirt. He leaves Manchester City after four years with the club and has also played for West Ham and Manchester United in the English Premiership. The Argentina striker is 29 and has signed a three-year contract. Meanwhile Everton have rejected a bid from champions Manchester United for Leighton Baines and say the defender is not for sale at any price.

Former Everton manager David Moyes, now with United, was widely expected to try to take the England leftback to Old Trafford with him. New Everton manager Roberto Martinez has said he wants to keep his playing staff intact.

In the third and last week of the trial of José Bretón, who is accused of murdering his two children - 6 year old Ruth and 2 year old Jose - three psychiatrists told the court that the accused does not suffer from any mental illness.

They said that after several long sessions with the accused, they could confirm that he was narcissistic, with a low tolerance threshold for frustration and unable to accept anything that did not agree with his view of the world. They said he was obsessively tidy and clean, reserved and of a

jealous nature.

The prosecution claims that Breton drugged his children before burning them in a makeshift oven at his family’s finca

outside Cordoba, with the intention of making his estranged wife suffer. The trial ends on Friday and the nineperson jury will then retire to reach a verdict.

The National Police have arrested 14 people in Marbella (Málaga) and the Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz), who smuggled hashish into Spain from Morocco hidden in frozen sardines. The investigation started in January and led to a frozen fish company in Puerto de Santa Maria. The police followed a van that left the warehouse there and

headed for Marbella with 900 kilos of hashish on board. The house in Marbella was the main distribution outlet, the

police said. They were unable to arrest the ringleader, a Moroccan, because he was in Morocco.

A family for the summer

More than 500 children aged 8 to 12 from the Western Sahara and Belorussia will come to Spain this summer to spend a few weeks with their "adopted" Spanish families.

The programme Vacations in Peace was introduced several years ago by the Andalusian Federation of Associations in Solidarity with the Sahara and the Associations of Friendship with the Saharaui People. The children fron Belorussia are a recent addition.

The children enter via Seville airport and are then taken to 70 towns across Seville province. A spokesman said the objective of Vacations in Peace is to ensure that the

children from Western Sahara enjoy good food and healthier conditions away from refugee camps in an arid desert where the temperature is often higher than 50 degrees Centigrade.

Arms gang dismantled

The national Police have dismantled a gang that had a hoard of 11 weapons and a lot of ammunition in series of raids around the town. Three men were arrested, one of them fron Gibraltar who police said was the leader of the gang.

Some strawberry growers are accused of using illegal boreholes which are draining water away from wildlife-rich wetlands of Doñana region, a World Heritage Site, putting a variety of species at risk. Unesco warned at a World Heritage Committee meeting held recently in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, that Spain must act urgently to stop the illegal water extraction or risk the Doñana national park being placed on a list of world heritage sites in danger. The Spanish authorities have been asked to submit an updated report on the state of conservation in Doñana by February 1st next year. The latest warning comes after Spain failed to meet a previous deadline set by Unesco to address the problem. The Junta de Andalucia had

Spain is the biggest exporter of strawberries worldwide, with an industry worth an estimated €400 million.

Ninety per cent of the fruit is produced in the provinces of Huelva and Seville, which border on Doñana, and much of it ends up on the shelves of supermarkets in the UK and other European countries.

In addition to putting a huge strain on water resources in the region, the industry is also responsible for pollution, including plastic sheeting and pesticides in the water supply. The WWF, one of

Doñana is listed as a Unesco world heritage site and biosphere reserve and is home to an abundance of wildlife, including thousands of migratory birds and the critically endangered Iberian Lynx.

Dangerous games

T

he announcement made by Junta de Andalucia premier José Antonio Griñán a few days ago that he would not run in the next election didn't surprise me as much as it seems to have surprised everybody else. I said shortly after the last regional election on March 25th last year that I believed the Socialists were asking for trouble when they decided to stay in power with the help of the Communistdominated United Left.

F

or the first time since Andalucia became an "autonomia" (decentralised region) the Partido Popular won more seats than the Socialists - 50 to 47 but fell short of the 55 seats needed to form a government. Here, when a party fails to get a majority, the second most-voted can do so in coalition with other parties. So Griñán decided to form what I called an unholy alliance with the United Left (IU, Izquierda Unida), which I predicted could lead to a short parliament and a very early election.

S

o why has Griñán presented what amounts to a resignation when the next regional election isn't due until March 2015? The main reason, I suspect, is that he knows the investigation into the ERE scandal is going to spatter a lot of mud on him and other high-ranking Andalusian Socialists. The ERE - a fund set up to help companies on the verge of bankruptcy to pay off workers - was the brainchild of former regional premier Manuel Chaves some ten years ago and Griñán, being Chaves's right hand man, was in on it from the very beginning. The Socialists have done everything possible to hamper the investigation, according to the Guardia Civil, and managed to delay it for a year by refusing to the deliver the documents to Judge Mercedes Alaya which she needed to get on with it.

T

he big scandal at a national level is the one involving the Partido Popular's former treasurer, Luis Barcenas, and the "envelopes" he allegedly gave to top PP people, including Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, over a period of years to unofficially top up their salaries. I haven't been keeping track of the sums involved - Barcenas is alleged to have salted away at least €36 million in bank accounts in Switzerland and other tax havens and the sums so far mentioned in the envelopes have amounted to several thousand paid to each politician every year for a number of years can't have amounted to more than €200

million. But that's peanuts in comparison to what has happened here in Andalucia, where some €1,200 million are unaccounted for, and that's just an initial estimate.

G

riñán's other reason for throwing in the towel so prematurely is that he's having serious problems with the United Left. He can't continue to govern without the IU's 11 seats so he can't afford to upset them, but he's finding it difficult to contain their more radical demands. The IU had never won so many seats in Andalucia and the fact that they also increased their seats in Parliament in Madrid in the November 2011 general election made them very cocky. They were the visible or invisible instigators of most of the demonstrations and marches that were held to protest Rajoy's cuts but as these became increasingly violent, more and more people decided to stay at home. So the IU's tactic began to run out of steam.

T

he Socialists at first allowed themselves to be dragged leftwards by the IU - thinking it would win back some of the couple of million votes they lost in the general election if the Left succeeded in forcing the Rajoy government to call another general election as the violence mounted over the cuts. It's now too late or that tactic to work the economic figures are much healthier than they were a year ago so a change of tactic is called for.

T

he Socialists have responded by veering back to their original left-of-centre position, realising that the majority of Spaniards are more interested in finding a job than overthrowing the government. However, the IU continues on its headlong radical course - it's currently asking for a referendum on Monarchy or Republic. They couldn't unseat the government by attacking its economic policies so let's try to do it by creating as much political mayhem as possible. It remains to be seen where that tactic will get them.

I

www.thenewsonline.es

believe Griñán when he says he doesn't want to run again but he knows that the growing ERE scandal could well bring him down before March 2015 and force an early election. In that event, if the Socialist Party comes up with an acceptable candidate to take his place, it might just get back enough of the disgruntled voters who deserted it last March 25th to win a slim majority - and get the IU off its back.

Martin Delfín

Divided PP

Writes for the English language version of

S

panish justice seemed to move swiftly over the past week and none of it for the good of the ruling Partido Popular (PP) party. A dramatic turn of events took place last Thursday when the High Court sent former PP treasurer Luis Bárcenas to jail after prosecutors argued that he was fabricating evidence in his tax fraud case and posed a possible flight risk - following their discovery that the ex-top party official had been transferring funds from Swiss accounts to the United States and Uruguay. A liberal lawyers group, which presented a private prosecution complaint against the one-time senator from Cantabria, had been advocating for some time that Bárcenas be held in preventive custody until his eventual trial. Barcenas, who is famous for giving finger gestures to the press and defiant shows of arrogance, reportedly threatened a representative of the liberal Association of Democratic Lawyers of Europe, ADADE - telling him that he "will get his", as he was being led away by Civil Guards who took him to jail.

B

árcenas is far from being quietly pushed aside by the PP as collateral damage in this never ending political war with the Socialists. And Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who continues to shy away from mentioning his name in public, is either worried about recent developments or has decided to take a chance and show some muscle by giving the green light for government prosecutors to get him off the streets. When asked in Brussels whether he feared that Bárcenas could blackmail him, a visibly nervous Rajoy said: "Not now nor any other time has that happened."

B

ut blackmail was indeed on everyone’s minds following the arrest. The newspapers, including El País, wondered what keys Bárcenas holds that could unlock the mysteries of the backroom wheelings and dealings - verbal pacts of gentlemen’s agreements which, if made public, could bring down the entire party and, perhaps, the Rajoy government. It was the first time since democracy was restored in 1975 that such a high party official has been sent to jail on suspicion of shady financial dealings. The allegations that sent him to jail are related to his and his wife's personal wealth, but Bárcenas is also under inquiry for keeping those famous sets of ledgers that detail nearly 20 years of payouts made to high PP officials, including Rajoy, and the money that came as donations from some of the country’s biggest government contractors.

B

árcenas may be spending some sleepless nights in Soto del Real jail as he ponders how to get out on bail. (His lawyer has said he will appeal the ruling handed down by High Court Judge Pablo Ruz). But many in the PP are also going through some of the most difficult periods in their own personal lives. After Monday’s weekly PP national committee meeting, the first since Bárcenas’s arrest, the party leadership filed out one by one telling reporters they are not concerned about blackmail. But the looks in their eyes revealed otherwise. Only Esperanza Aguirre, the former Madrid regional premier, appeared indignant as she told reporters that she was “embarrassed” by the corruption in her party.

A

s the day progressed, the PP received more bad news. A judge investigating the Gürtel corruption case in Valencia ordered two top former officials in regional premier Francisco Camps’ past government to stand trial on bid-rigging charges. The two former commissioners, Milagrosa Martínez and Angélica Such, are among 13 people who will be in the dock later this year. Martínez and Such both still serve as PP MPs in the regional legislature. Their names cropped up several years ago after the Gürtel kickbacks for contracts scandal began ensnaring the regional governments in Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha and Valencia after the investigation was made public in February 2009. The probable cause for trial ruling also puts the current regional premier Alberto Fabra in a tight spot. He had promised to clean up Valencia and instil improved transparency when he arrived as the local chief government following Camps’ resignation in 2011. It will be difficult - but not impossible - for the PP to find excuses to keep Martínez and Such on the parliamentary bench.

T

he PP has a lot of explaining to do over the past few years concerning the barrage of corruption allegations filed against the party. Yet members chose to deflect reporters’ questions, or use vague language to explain their position as if it were an unimportant matter. There are some serious divisions forming inside the ruling party - those who are fed up with “the embarrassment” as Esperanza Aguirre put it, and others on the opposite side who may have something to hide and would prefer just to remain quiet, hoping that this is just another seasonal media storm. Yet this one has lasted four years already.

as 2pm was actually 3pm so apologies are extended to those who arrived early but had to leave.

Many thanks to Tina and David of the Olive Tree for organising the auction, Carl for surviving the long session, and to Reg and Ron of RAFA who manned the checking-in and recording desk for their first time, and of course, to all who donated items for sale.

The money raised will be well used in helping to provide welfare assistance on the Costa del Sol.

For those who have not visited the Olive Tree, you should, there is a lot going on there, and the food is good.

Scam

There have been two incidents recently of socalled officials turning up at peoples gates wanting to get onto their premises.

The first said they were from Agua Andalucia and the town hall and needed to get in to obtain a water sample for water quality testing and, yet again, someone supposedly from Endesa electric company wanting to get in to “take photographs of your consumer box”. When asked what the photographs were for, they said it was because they had a new contract. Other than that, they had no explanation as to what the photos were for at all.

So, if they haven’t got a pre.booked appointment, DON’T LET THEM IN!

DANDY

This is DANDY who is one of NINA’S Pups that have been advertised over the past few weeks with mummy. He is now able to be reserved, but still cannot leave mum for another few weeks: in fact he had his first injection this week and is a very healthy little boy.

Found at last EHIC Reminder

A number of weeks ago, The News told you of the plight of Molly. She had been taken from her home by burglars and there was no sign of this poor little 16-year-old dog who has just one eye, is almost deaf and has a large tumour on her tummy.

Now, some ten weeks later Molly has been found! A lovely Spanish lady found her hiding in a hedge in the Guadalmina Baja area of Marbella and took her to a local vet who, upon scanning this little girl, found that she was microchipped and they were able to contact Molly’s owners who raced to the vets to claim their beloved pet. Molly was in a bit of a state, a bit thin and covered in dirt but otherwise unharmed.

Of course, she is now back at home and getting all the treats and cuddles she can handle! The point in telling you this tale is three fold. The first is that, at last, there is some good news inasmuch as there are kind people out there who will do the right thing despite the scumbags who took her in the first place, there is a very happy family as a consequence of the Spanish lady’s actions, and once again we can see the importance of having our pets microchipped. This can be carried out by any vet, is inexpensive, and should the worst happen, your pet will be able to be scanned and returned to you. Don’t forget though, if you move, let the authorities know your change of address.

The British Embassy in Madrid has put out a follow up reminder to potential visitors from the UK on the importance of the European Health Insurance Card, the EHIC. The information however applies equally to anyone outside their European country of residence and is travelling or holidaying in Europe or more accurately The European Economic Area (EEA)*

The EHIC provides free or reduced cost state healthcare for anyone in need of treatment until their planned return to their home country. It covers illness, accidents pre-existing medical conditions and - provided you did not specifically go abroad to give birth routine maternity care.

In an emergency, life without an EHIC can go downhill quickly. Recently a couple from the Costa del Sol found their bank account unexpectedly frozen to the tune of over 4000€. The embargo, for unpaid medical fees, was placed there on behalf of a hospital for ambulance and medical treatment following a minor motor scooter accident. Another hobbling youth, who broke his ankle on the second a day of a holiday in Fuengirola, was reluctant to go the Costa del Sol

Abuelo Vicente Bañesto Gomez hospital because he had not asked for his European Health Insurance Card before leaving the UK. The name of EHIC European Health Insurance Card is fairly self-explanatory, the card is free, it is as important as your passport and you'd be foolish to travel without it.

There are two sides to every story. Recently some Spanish hospitals and state medical facilities have been heavily criticised for not asking for, or conveniently overlooking their patients EHIC rights. Preferring to go down the route of payment by holiday travel insurance instead which one assumes must be quicker or financially somehow better for them. This is fundamentally incorrect procedure, but short of gluing your health card to your forehead, there is not much else that can be done and in the

confusion of an emergency or sudden illness it's difficult to judge who did or said what.

Basically private hospitals and private clinics do not have to accept the card, state medical facilities throughout the EEA do. Happy Trails!

RELEASE MONEY FROM YOUR UK PENSION QROPS (Qualifying Recognized Overseas Pension Scheme) have been available to ex-pats since April 2006.

There is no mystery to QROPS, they are basically the same as your UK pension but offer better benefits than the UK. The process is very simple and takes approximately three months to complete. In the UK you may not take any benefits before you are 55 years of age. If you are 50 or above and have been outside the UK for 5 complete tax years you may withdraw 25/30% and then an income at 55. If you are pension rich but cash poor, this could be a way of solving temporary financial difficulties. You have nothing to lose by asking but everything to gain. We look forward to hearing from you To find if you qualify to release money now call 951 206 138 or email admin@kennedyfinancialservices.com or visit www.kennedyfinancialservices.com and complete the free assessment form.

The local bus service has - after some sweet talking from the switched on ladies of the Mijas Town Hall Foreign Residents Department agreed to run several late night extra buses back to Fuengirola bus station on the Saturday night. The special bus time table is as follows: Going

up, buses are scheduled every half hour until 10.00 pm then at 10.45 pm, 11.45 pm, 1.00 am with the last bus up to Mijas village at 2.00 am. More importantly, coming back down to Fuengirola after 8.30 pm, again every half hour until 10.30 pm then at 11.15 pm, 12.30 midnight, 1.30 am and finally 2.30 am. This is a favour from the bus company and it beats walking. The 7th International Blues festival is organised by the Mijas town hall, entrance is free and most of the musicians come, one way or another, via Kevin Hillier's famous Ain’t Nothing But Blues Club in London. This years festival features Mississippi / New Orleans blues legend Little Freddie King. written by Pete Woodall

This is a week where you could feel that the pressure is really on. There could be certain talks with family members that can no longer be avoided and as much discomfort as this brings it is time to be determined and unbending in your approach. Keep one step ahead of the game making sure your powers of observant are right on the mark, focus on the small details to ensure errors do not occur. Delegate the things you know you need to in order for you to be able to concentrate on the task at hand. With the energy surrounding you now anything is actually possible, others will want to keep on the right side of you and you could find that they move forward to help you out of a sticky situation. Popularity soars and with regard to a relationship some unfulfilled wants and needs will shortly be met. If there is something you have been meaning to express creatively or emotionally then this is the time to do it. Doors are opening. You could be thinking about a more profitable way to spend your time and you will be focusing on earnings and resources. There could be opportunities to do with real estate or that come to you via family. If you are in doubt about anything, talk about what needs to be tackled and it will become clear. Old traps and routines that held you captive in the past no longer have a holdover you so break free as this new beginning is full of exciting adventures. It is not yet the time to make important choices or decisions but it is in your best interest to investigate the facts and make yourself aware of different options. Keep an open mind at this time and make sure you stay on top of daily tasks. Jupiter has entered your sign and soon you will start to feel the benefit of this planet of abundance. Meanwhile it is important to re-think a strategy and allow yourself the time to settle into a new way of thinking. In the next few days, you will be able to see the bigger picture plan which will then allow you to make strong choices in the present moment. The success and progress you can make now is incredible, but the last thing you need is others getting jealous and working behind your back to cause you problems, so make sure your feet are firmly on the ground. There is a lot going on behind the scenes and you are working on setting and preparing the stage for the next act to follow. Others are waiting for you to be the one that sets the tone and initiates the actions, so speak up and tell others what is going on in your mind. Trust your instincts. After the weekend something is just going to click when you suddenly see a different perspective on a situation, it is as if you are struck by a flash of inspiration and ingenuity. Communicating what is in your heart to a close other will create ripples of understanding.

LIBRA

You are being recognised for what you bring to the table, there could be opportunities to do with career or your vocation in life so keep your ears and eyes open. However, Mercury is retrograde which means that this can be a time where mistakes are made or words are overlooked. You find yourself standing in a different place and are seeing things from a different angle, this enables you to marvel at the vision before you in all its greatness and inspires you to put into action a plan for the future. There are still certain limitations around you for the moment but in a couple of weeks these too will clear. Those in the past that didn’t believe you were right - will soon realise how ahead of your time you were.

SAGITTARIUS

You are being asked to take the lead, step up to the plate and take control, it is because you can see the best way something is to be achieved, seeing beyond the usual limits. Some maybe afraid of the changes that are happening right now but you have the ability this week to not only see the whole but also to see the steps it takes to get there. On the personal front take time out for yourself November 22nd - and make sure you have adequate space to rest in-between helping the world. st December 21

Your relationships with others have got to a level where they are starting to flow, the expansive energy of Jupiter is shining down on you and also increasing your power of attraction. You may have to tie up some loose ends over this week, finish those chores off and sort that paperwork out. It may be necessary to turn away from some non-productive element of your life, as you progress it is natural for some things, to fall by the wayside. You could be tempted to blow some things out of proportion that is because your focus is on all that is broken or basically not right with your world. Something seemingly small can become larger than life and there is one thing that is taking up all your thoughts. It may be that you need to take a risk that will carry you into different territory. Make the effort to turn things around, you do this by moving your focus to something that is more positive, you will be amazed at how quickly things start to sort themselves out. A feeling of immeasurable security is heading your way, for a while now it has been a struggle but shortly things will start to flow. You are well known for something and the universe could be about to re-launch you but first it will reveal some missing creative pieces that will take you to a higher level. Others always think they know best but your powers of observation and awareness are very strong at the moment. Be ready to take the lead.

...you don’t have to be a chef!

The cheescake has a lovely delicate creamy strawberry taste and a little crunch of hidden white chocolate. This cheesecake is highly recommended for anyone who needs a quick dessert to impress.

White chocolate and strawberry cheesecake Ingredients:

(Serves 8)

• • •

200g of melted white chocolate 400g of full fat soft cheese 250g of roughly chopped strawberries • 1 ½ packets of digestive biscuits • 50g of melted butter • 100g of double cream

Directions Grease the edges of an 8 inch loose tin and line with baking paper. Place the digestives in a blender and blitz until all broken up (or place the biscuits in a sealed bag and hit with a rolling pin until all broken up). Next, melt the butter and mix the crushed biscuits and butter together place evenly in the bottom of the tin. Put the tin in the fridge to chill whilst making the filling. Place the cream cheese in a mixer and mix until soft. Add the cream to loosen the cheese and once thoroughly mixed, melt the white chocolate and leave to cool slightly. Once cool, poor into the cheese mix and gently combine the two. If the mixture is not sweet enough, you can add a little icing sugar. Cut the strawberries into quarters and fold through the white chocolate mix gently so as not

to break up the strawberries too much. Retrieve the base from the fridge. Then place the cheesecake mix on top of the base and knock gently on the table top so that any air at the bottom of the tin is removed. Now spread the mixture evenly over the top and place the cheesecake back into the fridge and chill for a least 4 hours (or overnight for best results). Once chilled, remove the cheesecake from the tin discard the paper lining and using a hot clean knife cut the cheesecake, wiping the knife each time so you get a clean cut and serve.

Ask Calvin and Sue: Hair & Beauty Dear Calvin

I come to Spain two or three times a year for around a month at a time. I arrive with my newly coloured blonde hair looking great yet within a couple of weeks it has turned brassy looking with a lot of orange/yellow in it, can you advise me on how to keep the colour? Lynne, Mijas/Kent

Dear Lynne

A lot of clients suffer with a yellowing of their hair when out in the sun. Whether coloured or naturally grey when you have your colour next try introducing beige tones into your hair as these tones as these tones tend to resist yellowing more than others. Another alternative is to use a violet shampoo such as “Paul Mitchell’s Platinum

Blonde Shampoo” which neutralises brassiness and is also great for naturally grey hair. Dear Calvin

I am in the process of moving back to Wales, and have always used a very dark permanent hair colour on my hair, which I colour at home. This looks great with a tan, but I am worried that under the grey Wselsh skies it will look too harsh with no tan. Is there a way I can remove my dark locks and have a softer colour? Louise, Mijas Costa Dear Louise

A colour remover can be used to take your hair back to its normal colour

and then a lighter colour introduced. I imagine as you have been colouring your hair yourself that you have a build up of colour, and doing this process would mean two chemical treatments on your hair which can be very damaging. I would suggest that you introduce low lights or a semi permanent colour, by using warm tones the hair has the effect of looking lighter, and also it would be a lot kinder to your hair. Paul Mitchell has a colour save shampoo and treatment that will keep your hair in tip top shape while doing this. Dear Sue

Now we are back to sandal wearing weather my husband is having the same problem as every year with cracked heels. He uses a razor blade on a regular basis to keep the hard skin down but seems to be on a losing battle. Do you have any other solutions to this? Muriel, Fuengirola Dear Muriel

This “fighting a losing battle” with a blade is common. A lot of chiropodists and beauty

salons keep a regular clientele because of this. Your feet feel lovely when first done but within a few days the hard skin returns. When using any type of blade it is IMPOSSIBLE to remove only the dead skin which is white in colour. You will go into the dermis (lower part of the skin) and this causes extra activity in the cells which react by multiplying and creating more hard skin. The cells have produced extra skin to protect the area and so once you remove it from the living part the skin works extra hard to produce more. The is a very simple (but slow) solution. Only use a foot file or in a beauty salon or chiropodist only stay seated if they use a grinding machine. The best of these in my opinion is called a Pedi-Doc . It has many different grinding cones of different coarseness allowing removal of only the dead hard cells. Use this on dry feet so you can more easily see the white parts which need removing and leave the healthy skin alone. Apply a specialised moisturising cream available at most salons (I use one from the Himalayan company) daily and repeat the

removal of the hard skin once a week until he has feet to be proud off. Dear Sue

Having had a set of false nails on for a month my nails are now extremely weak and peeling off. Any ideas of what to do? Christine, Benalmadena Dear Christine

Most artificial nails are removed by using acetone to melt them which is extremely drying to the nail or filed off which takes the top layers of the nail off. I would advise that you keep them sort and condition them daily. The nail is made up of keratin (a protein also found in our hair). Most women I know wouldn’t dream of putting their hair in household bleach or hot water but do so daily with their nails. In the same way you condition your hair after washing it with a conditioner the same applies to your nails, so I recommend a good nail oil to hydrate them. Avoid harsh detergents and fear not nails regrow so in a few months all will not be lost.

Cutlery affects taste Our perception of how food tastes is influenced by the size, weight, shape and colour of the cutlery used, according to researchers at the University of Oxford.

More than 100 students took part in three experiments looking at the influence of these factors on taste.

The researchers found that when the weight of the cutlery was what the testers expected, this had an impact on how the food tastes. For example, food tasted sweeter on the small spoons that are traditionally used to serve desserts. Colour contrast was also an important

factor - white yoghurt eaten from a white spoon was rated sweeter than white yoghurt eaten from a black one.

Likewise, when testers were offered cheese on a knife, spoon, fork or toothpick, they found that the cheese from a knife tasted saltiest. "How we experience food is a multisensory experience involving taste, feel of the food in our mouths, aroma, and the feasting of our eyes," the researchers said. "Even before we put food into our mouths our brains have made a judgment about it, which affects our overall experience."

Past research has shown that crockery can alter our perception of food and drink. For example, people generally eat less when food is served on smaller plates. The researchers said their study of how the brain influences food perceptions could help dieters or improve gastronomic experiences at restaurants. "There's a lot more to food than what's on the plate," they said. "Many things we thought didn't matter do." They added: "We're going to see a lot more of neuroscience design around mealtimes."

So, they’re at it again! If they stuck to their own rules in the first place, new rules wouldn’t be necessary

Make sure it’s small enough to fit … but they’re saying that you can still take the bigger ones, err... possibly?!

It’s not as if you’ve been able to take a huge amount of onboard luggage (although no matter what their marketing exec said on Sky News, there have always been the odd person or two trying to sneak what looks like a full sized suitcase on board), now Easyjet have made their onboard case size even smaller. In the past you were allowed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. From Monday this week however, they have reduced it to 50cm x 40cm x 20cm. What they said was that so many people are taking up space with the original sized bags that they just don’t have enough space anymore in the overhead lockers. I think the whole problem is

not that the old size was too big, it was that they weren’t consistent in not allowing bigger stuff to go on, and you could bet your life that those with the huge bags were also the ones at the front of the queues to get on first taking up everyone elses space. As Eamonn Holmes said, it would be better if Easyjet incentivised those that got on board with very little (say a laptop case only) or no hand luggage at all by giving them a voucher for, say, five pounds to spend on inflight goods. So, travel light and you could maybe get a sandwich and a cup of tea onboard to make the hours go more quickly. In the past they reduced hold luggage from 23kg to 20kg, now this. I have been

travelling for over 50 years and I don’t remember a time when tickets were much dearer so, no excuse there so it would seem to me that we are getting less and less for our money. Easyjet say that, if you try and take hand luggage of the old sizes, they won’t guarantee you can take it on board with you so, be aware if you’re travelling soon that, whatever you have in your bag may be forced to go in the hold so keep any valuables in a seperate baggie within your hand luggage so you can whip it out quick if you need to. I would like to be a fly on the wall of the bag manufacturers - will they have a lot of unsold stock or will they make a fortune making the new size?

Timeless energy Cirque girl dies in fall

Sir Mick Jagger wound back the years in his own unique way, displaying seemingly boundless energy at the Glastonbury Festival on Saturday. It was a performance that must have made even older die-hard festival goers feel ten years younger. Now in his 70th year, Jagger fronted the Rolling Stones for the first time at the massive event, attracting an audience thought to be around 350,000- strong to the main Pyramid stage. The set was a gruelling two hours and fifteen minutes. It featured many of the Stones’ favourites, was packed with energy and the gig was topped off with fireworks. Thankfully the weather was kind for this year’s event and plenty of guitar changes between numbers

allowed backstage staff to tune instruments as the temperatures dropped. Initial fears some band members had about performing live in the open air were unfounded. It was a fantastic night and one for the history books. The BBC had negotiated rights to broadcast a good chunk of the show on national television and made a good job of retaining sound quality so that this very British experience could be shared in homes across the land.

Acrobat Sarah Guyard, 31 and an original member of the Cirque du Soleil “KA” cast fell 50 feet to her death on Saturday when it would appear that a wire suspending her snapped during her performance at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Audience members Tweeted that the performers were at the highest point on the vertical wall when the accident happened adding that the performers were visibly shocked but the crew acted calmly in getting everyone out of the theatre. Ms Guyard died on her way to hospital.

Cirque du Soleil is world famous for its haunting music, balletic performances, fantastic costumes and acrobatics.

Swedish designed This is the first death the company has had in its 30year history.

Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte issued a statement saying he was heartbroken by the death, and performances of the show have been canceled indefinitely. "I am heartbroken. I wish to extend my sincerest sympathies to the family. We are all completely devastated," Laliberte said. "We are reminded

Opinion YJT 96.1fm

Lee Jay It is with great sadness and much anger that we have to announce Heartfm Spain will cease transmission tonight and be replaced by YJT96.1fm. Tshis is due to a UK based Company "This is Global Radio Limited" issuing legal proceedings against us for use of the name “Heart”. We have been broadcasting under the name Heartfmspain for 7 years with no problems however because we use the word “Heart” in our name they are suing us under copyright law. Apparently the UK company has global copyright on the word “Heart” when used in anything connected with broadcasting. This was issued in 2008 two years

after we started. We have tried in vain to avert this but they have the upper hand being a multimillion pound company and us just a local station. It seems they are clearing the way to start their global fame by transmitting in Europe so any station using any of their names such as “global”, “heart”, “classic gold” etc will be forced to change. Nothing has changed on 96.1 just the name so out with the old and in with the new and welcome to YJT 96.1fm …… enjoy your community radio.

Tony Byford Is there anyone out there who would love to help an animal charity in its vital fundraising activities and who would be able to spare one Sunday a month!

how much money they have to patent the word “Heart”… barking! If they get away with it with broadcasters, what next? So, in the future if a heart surgeon wants to advertise what he does he has to call himself “the-thing-that’s-inyour-body-and-beats surgeon”? What about the British Heart Foundation, the American Heart Association, Heart Walk charity? And the difference between a multi-million pound organization and Lee and Pat Jay’s local radio…. they should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves and the publicity will do their company no good whatsoever. May the little man win!

organizations in the villa Hotel Padierna, Marbella. About 120 paying guests showed up and paid €180 per person. Big names were being used and probably paid to come!! Everyone was of course beautifully dressed, injected, uplifted etc.! They obviously came to be seen, which of course is o.k. if you keep the purpose of being there in balance. However they must have forgotten their wallets because, during the auction to raise money, only two items were bought and subsequently cancelled the next day! The organization was also not very efficient and had nothing to do with raising money. But the most embarrassing part of all is that none of the charities have or will receive ANY money whatsoever, while

with your friends. You would have to be prepared to join us at 8am to help unload and set up, and to assist too at 2pm to box up and reload our van. Anyone interested in finding out more can contact us on 605 227 155 or 665 682 919.

Marbella

the whole reason for organising this event was to help the animals. It is a great shame that the name of animal charities are being used to organize another "to be seen" Gala if they cost more than they raise. If some of the money that was spent on outfits and dresses etc. were donated to the charities a lot of animals would have had food and shelter for a long time! Now they get nothing at all. Of course not all fundraising dinners etc. are like this one and these events are absolutely necessary for the charity's, So please keep going but make sure your money goes where it was intended to go. Editor: Thank God this doesn’t happen normally and the animals benefit.

Comment By Ken Campbell

Exoplanets Throughout the Universe there are billions and billions of stars, is it possible that our star –The Sun – is the only star to have a family of planets?

T

his was one of the great questions that plagued astronomers for centuries. But the trouble with finding other planets orbiting around stars is two fold. 1 The stars shine with their own light while planets only reflect the stars light and so are much, much fainter than a star, and 2. They are simply too far away to be seen by even the most powerful telescopes. There was just no way to confirm one way or the other whether they existed.

V

arious detection methods were tried but none were successful and it was not until as late as 1995 that the first true confirmation came through of a giant planet orbiting around a star 50 light years away called 51 Pegasi.

A

stronomers use two main methods to detect an Extrasolar Planet or Exoplanet. The first is called Radial Velocity and simply means making very accurate measurements of the parent star’s position. As the planet orbits the star its gravity causes the star to wobble slightly in the same way that an Olympic hammer thrower wobbles as he swings the hammer around.

T

he second method used is called the Transit method. When each time the planet passes in front of the parent star a very slight dip in the star’s brightness can be detected. Using this method it is also possible to estimate the planet’s size and its orbital period around the star.

O

nce these two methods had been perfected the discovery of more and more Exoplanets became almost common place. As of today there have been over 900 confirmed discoveries of Exoplanets in 700 separate Solar Systems and the number is increasing almost daily. The new Kepler Space telescope has detected 18,000 stars that exhibit the ‘Transit Effect’ and it is only a matter of time before these observations can be confirmed as Exoplanets. Conservative estimates put the number of Exoplanets within our Milky Way Galaxy alone as “17 billion Earth sized planets”

A

s the detection methods are still very much in their infancy all the Exoplanets discovered up to now have been very large, even bigger than Jupiter. And almost all of them are a long way out from the parent star. What Astronomers are seeking is the ‘Goldilocks Planet’, not too big – not too small, not too hot and not too cold. In fact, just right to support life.

A

ll life that we know of needs the existence of water, there is not even one life form of any kind on Earth that can exist without water, so it is presumed that water is a prerequisite to all life, even Alien life. If a planet is too far from the parent star then the water will freeze and become solid ice. If the planet is too close then the water will simply boil away leaving a barren desert. If the Exoplanet is too small then it will not have enough gravity to hold onto its atmosphere, this will allow the air pressure to drop and water to boil at a lower temperature than here on Earth. This is probably what happened to Mars many millions of years ago.

H

ot off the press comes the news that just last week an International team of Astronomers announced the discovery of three ‘Goldilocks’ planets orbiting in the habitable zone of a star called Gliess 667C. Gliess 667C is one of a trio of stars all in orbit around each other in the constellation of Scorpio. It is a ‘mere’ 22 light years from Earth and so a very close neighbour. Unfortunately it is not very spectacular to look at and is only just visible to the naked eye if you know where to look.

B

ut its discovery opens up the way for more and more ‘Goldilocks’ planets to be discovered. What will it yield? An Earth sized planet orbiting a star similar to the Sun at just the right distance for liquid water to exist in oceans.

W

hat is more worrying? That life could have started on other worlds and Alien life is plentiful wherever we look? Or that we really are all alone in this infinite Universe fated to be tied to our small blue rock that we call home?

Rosberg wins a thrilling British Grand Prix

The Silverstone crowd got the Mercedes victory they were hoping for but it was Nico Rosberg, not Lewis Hamilton, who took the chequered flag in an exciting and eventful British Grand Prix. Hamilton’s hopes of repeating his 2008 success were done for as early as the eighth lap when he suffered a spectacular tyre failure. The first of four on a bad day for tyre suppliers Pirelli. German’s luck also ran out when he suffered gearbox failure on the 41st lap. It was Vettel’s first DNF since Italy last year and the first time he had finished lower than fourth this season. This was Rosberg’s

second win of the season, following his success in Monaco. And with Lewis Hamilton being helped by a couple of safety car deployments, and driving brilliantly through the field to take a deserved fourth place, it was a good afternoon in the end for Mercedes. Local hero Aussie Mark Webber, twice a winner here in recent years had a great race after an appalling start which saw him drop back from 4th to 13th place. In his final Silverstone Grand Prix he eventually took second, beaten by just 0.7s, and he looked capable of winning if the race had lasted just another lap or two. Fernando Alonso, again drove a consistent race to take the third podium place.

Paul Casey wins Irish Open Paul Casey secured his first victory in over two years with a three-shot win in the Irish Open at Carton House. England’s Casey, who plummeted from third in the world rankings to 169th, fired a superb fiveunder-par 67 in blustery conditions to finish 14 under. Overnight leader Joost Luiten (74) and Robert Rock (71) were joint second, with Pablo Larrazabal (75) fourth. Jose Maria Olazabal was tied for the lead midway through his round but faded to finish joint fifth on eight under. Casey claimed the 12th European Tour title of his career in dramatic fashion after overturning a fourshot deficit in the final round. His last European Tour victory came in Bahrain in January 2011 but he qualified for the recent US Open with a round of 64 at Walton Heath. "It's incredibly sweet," Casey told the European Tour website. "It's been a while and when that putt went in (at the 18th) half of it was relief and half of it was satisfaction. "What a grandstand finish - winning an Irish Open is an absolute dream.

Vintage Rossi back to winning ways Valentino Rossi described his 80th MotoGP triumph in the Dutch MotoGP at Assen as one of the best victories of his career. The Factory Yamaha rider rolled back the years to claim his first MotoGP win since 2010 after a vintage performance. Rossi passed Repsol Honda duo Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa to move into the lead of the race and was never seriously troubled thereafter as he powered his YZR-M1 to the chequered flag in front of an appreciative Assen crowd. The 34-year-old appears to have made significant progress with the bike following a test at Catalunya and served a timely reminder of his braking prowess as he slipped underneath Pedrosa at Assen's famous

final chicane on lap 6 of 26.

“Today was something special, this is one of the best victories in my career because it is one of the most wanted and expected for such a lot of time,” said the seven time MotoGP champion, who endured two winless seasons at Ducati before returning to Yamaha for the start of 2013. “I'm so happy because I won a real race where all my opponents were very

strong and very fast, apart from Jorge with his injury”. Rossi’s team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, had battled through the pain barrier following surgery on his broken left collarbone to take fifth. Britain’s Cal Crutchlow got his third podium in four races, but, it could have been so much better, after Friday’s qualifying Crutchlow was beaming after becoming the first Britain to take pole position since 2002.

C.O.G.S. play Torrequebrada. Eighteen members and one guest played at the superb Torrequebrada Golf Club. The course was in perfect condition, even though there were a lot of maintenance works being carried out. This is a great course and for those of you that have not played there we recommend you give it a try. Over the last year we have lost some members due to them returning to the U.K for various reasons and some with illness. I remind the readers that we are a very friendly Society of mixed standards and we would welcome any new members. You can find the relevant phone numbers on our notice board in Laineys Bar, required to contact the officers of the Society to join, or play as a guest. Longest drive on hole 14 Ian Holden, nearest the pin on hole 11 Ian Holden and nearest the pin in two shots on hole 7 Andy Macfarlane. In the hole in two shots

Lastly all the members of C.O.G.S would like to inform John Bamber that our sincere thoughts are with him concerning the worrying time he is going through at present due to the illness of his wife. God bless you John from us all. Nig Bowler Chairman

Wayne’s Poker Tips Ladies Day at the WSOP

For the first time in many years, the Ladies World Championship was all about the ladies. Annual appearances of men in the event led the World Series of Poker staff to change the buy-in to $10,000, with a 90 percent discount for female participants. A strong field of 954 women paid the $1,000, and Kristen Bicknell (pictured right) made her first WSOP cash count as she turned that investment into $173,922 and a WSOP bracelet. Bicknell, 26, has a degree in criminal justice, but she primarily plays the cash games online. She's a Supernova Elite on PokerStars, a coach at UltimateGrinders.com and also has over $250,000 in online tournament "It feels really good," Bicknell said to the WSOP after her win. "I have worked really hard in poker the last couple of years. So although I do not think I played exceptionally throughout the whole tournament, I ran really well. It still feels like all my hard work paid off."

Bicknell became the 10th Canadian champion of the

Series, which is the most any non-American country has obtained in the history of the WSOP.

Shana Matthews entered the final table with the chip lead, and top tournament professional Adam Levy in her corner. She lost her edge during eight-handed play to Bicknell (Q-Q over 8-8) and opened the door for the Canadian pro to coast at the top for the next few eliminations. In a span of 25 hands, half the remaining field was send home: Chris Priday (eighth), Amanda Baker (seventh), Eleanor Gudger (sixth) and Connie Bruce (fifth). Matthews ran 10-10 into Leanne Haas' KK to fall in fourth, and Bicknell took out Julie Monsacre in third (A-5 over K-9) to force even stacks to start heads-up action. After a quick-paced final table, the two would battle in a similar fashion for the title. Only six hands into it, Bicknell opened and Haas called. The flop came K-8-3, Bicknell bet and Haas

called. A Jack fell on the turn, Bicknell bet Haas raised and Bicknell called. After a 7 on the river, Haas moved all-in, Bicknell called and showed A-K for the winning hand, as Hass sent her K-9 to the muck, out in second. "Things got really serious at the final table," Bicknell said. "Yesterday, everyone was nice … but today there was not much talking at the final table. It wasn't like yesterday when everybody was showing pictures and all. Today, everyone had on their game face. … It feels surreal."

The main event is up next for Bicknell where she'll try to become the first woman at the final table since Barbara Enright in 1995. Enright finished 25th in this event. Other notable finishers include Danielle Andersen (44th), Annie Liu (49th) and Liv Boeree (54th).

PGA Tour agrees to anchored strokes ban The PGA Tour will implement the global ban on anchored strokes from 1 January 2016 to "avoid confusion". The R&A and the US Golf Association first unveiled plans last year which were supported by the European Tour but not the PGA Tour. The PGA has now decided that a single set of rules on acceptable strokes is "desirable and would avoid confusion". The ban will apply to any club rested against a part of the body, such as broom-handle or belly putters.

Brazil stun Spain to lift cup

Brazil produced one of the most remarkable upsets in world football with their stunning performance at the Maracana, to completely demolish Spain and claim their third consecutive Fifa Confederations Cup. From the kick-off Brazil showed their intent, giving Spain no time on the ball to perform their Tiki Taka. Let’s be honest, Spain hadn’t been at their best right through the tournament, and fans are now voicing opinions that the way Spain play is boring, which is true when

Brazil though were magnificent, and where did this sudden inspiring play come from, because the last few times we have seen them they have been just about average. With Neymar again stealing the show, scoring Brazil's second goal with a thundering left-foot shot and Fred scoring twice, Brazil had the crowd going wild. Chants of the “Champion’s are back”, rang round the Maracana. Things might have been

Pirelli will strengthen its tyres ahead of this weekend's German Grand Prix to try to avoid a repeat of the six blowouts seen at Silverstone. The rear tyres' internal belt will be made of Kevlar at the Nurburgring this weekend rather than the usual steel. Then for the Hungarian Grand Prix at the end of July, Pirelli will revert to its 2012 construction, which is different to that used this year. At Silverstone, six drivers - Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, McLaren's Sergio Perez, Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne and Sauber's Esteban Gutierrez - all suffered dramatic failures during the race. Hamilton, who had been leading when his left-rear tyre exploded, said something needed "to be done straight away " to solve the issue.

Serena Williams’ shock exit to Germany’s Sabine Lisicki. World number one and defending champion Serena Williams added to the list of shock exits at this year's Wimbledon as she bowed out in the fourth round against Sabine Lisicki. Williams was 1/2 on to win what would have been a sixth singles' title in SW19, but she had no answer in the final set to the 23rd seed from Germany, losing 6-2 1-6 6-4. Her defeat has blown the field wide open, with Petra Kvitova the only former Wimbledon champion left in the quarter-finals.

Lions 2013: Trio could return for Australia series decider The British and Irish Lions remain optimistic Jamie Roberts, Mike Phillips and Alex Corbisiero will be available for Saturday's series decider against Australia in Sydney. Roberts missed the first two Tests with a hamstring injury, while Phillips (knee) and Corbisiero (calf) sat out Saturday's defeat in Melbourne. The trio need to prove their fitness when training resumes on Wednesday. "They are all making good progress," said tour manager Andy Irvine. "The medics are reasonably hopeful."
