Angry reactions to spying revelations at G20 A diplomatic row has broken out over claims that Britain spied on foreign governments attending G20 meetings in London in 2009.
On Monday, Turkey's foreign ministry demanded answers over reports that its delegates had their computers monitored and their phones tracked. South Africa condemned the alleged "abuse of privacy" and a senior Russian politician said it was a "scandal". Prime minister David Cameron would not comment on the claims, which came as the G8 summit of eight of the world's leaders got under way in Northern Ireland. All the nations attending
the G8 summit also attended the 2009 meetings which were said to have been the target of UK intelligence agencies.
The claims, reported by the Guardian newspaper, are that GCHQ – Britain's electronic eavesdropping agency – spied on foreign politicians and officials attending two G20 summit meetings in April and September 2009. Quoting the leaked documents supplied by Edward Snowden – a former contractor to the US
National Security Agency – the paper alleged that UK intelligence agencies set up internet cafes specifically to enable them to read the emails of those taking part in the summit, and that the operation was sanctioned at a senior level in the government of then prime minister Gordon Brown. It said the intelligence obtained was passed to ministers. The Turkish, South African and Russian delegates are said to have been among those targeted.

As I said last week, I have been in the UK for a little holiday and it was lovely. We went on Thursday 6th, my birthday, so it was like a present all in itself. We spent the first week in Bournemouth with my friend Janine and her husband Martin. It had been his 60th birthday some weeks before so we were to have a double celebration. We did all manner of things, most of which incurred little or no cost except petrol for getting to places and then parking fees. One of the places I wanted to go to was the Bridport Saturday market in Dorset. I used to visit the area frequently and it has changed very little in decades which was a refreshing change. The market has some new stuff but it’s mostly antique stalls (junk to some!) and they have a lovely farmers’ bit in the town hall that sells speciality cheeses, meats, breads, jams and chutneys etc. which is always interesting. My husband tried the “best pork pie” he’d ever eaten but after he’d said that we were rather surprised by the young lady selling them that

Princess's tax audit could be inaccurate
The Finance Ministry on Monday admitted that an official tax audit report on an alleged €1.43 million worth of property sales by Princess Cristina may have been based on erroneous information. Judge Jose Castro, who is investigating her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, had asked for the audit in an effort to determine whether the princess and her husband may have committed tax fraud, as well as for the sources of their personal income during the period that

First British-born mayor
Sheep farmer Carmen McPhee, 45 has become the first elected British-born mayor in Spain, taking over the running of Villaquejida in leon province. She now has the job of making ends meet in the 950strong farming community which has been starved of the government funds it needs for basic infrastructure by the country's economic crisis. Ms McPhee was born in london and brought up in luton but had a bilingual upbringing as her mother was originally from nearby Villafer, where she spent her summers as a child. She opted to live in Villafer when she was 19, then she met her husband, Mario Fernández. They have been married for 24 years, and have two daughters aged 22 and 23. They all run the family farm and milk from their 800 sheep is used to make the tangy cheese for which leon is famous.

Longest cloistered nun dies
Sister Teresita Barajuen, who is believed to hold the world record of 86 years cloistered in a monastery has died, Sister Maria romero, abbess of the Buenafuente del Sistal, reported last week. She was 105. She entered the Cistercian monastery when she was 19, and acknowledged in interviews that like many young women at the time, she never intended being a nun but entered the monastery because of family pressure. In 2011, Sister Barajuen left the monastery for the first time in 40 years to meet Benedict XVI during a papal visit to Madrid. She had entered the monastery on the same day he was born.

Anti-World Cup protests spread in Brazil Some 200,000 people marched through the streets of Brazil's biggest cities on Monday, as protests over rising public transport costs and the expense of staging the 2014 World Cup spread.
The protests are the largest seen in Brazil for more than 20 years. They were triggered by a June 2nd increase in the price of a single bus fare in Sao Paulo from 3 reals (£0.90)
to 3.20. In the country that will soon host the World Cup and Olympics, many are now complaining that enormous sums of money are being wasted instead of used for health and education.
The protesters also accuse political leaders of nepotism and corruption. The demonstrations were relatively peaceful, though some of the 100,000 protesters in Rio de
Janeiro threw rocks at police, wounding five officers, set fire to a car and vandalised the state assembly building. The police used tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets to disperse them. "Peaceful demonstrations are legitimate," President Dilma Rousseff said in a statement. "It is natural for the young to demonstrate."
However, Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo warned protesters that the authorities would not allow them to disrupt the Confederations Cup or next year's World Cup. "The government assumed the responsibility and the honour to stage these two international events and will do so, ensuring the security and integrity of the fans and tourists," he said.
Turkish government Call for clampdown may send in army on tax evasion
Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc told A Haber TV on Monday that the government could use the military to end nearly three weeks of unrest by protesters in Istanbul and other cities. He said the state would use "all its powers" and the armed forces if necessary to "establish peace". It is the first time the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party has raised the prospect of deploying troops. Later, Mr Arinc complained that his comments had been taken out of context.
In a separate interview, Interior Minister Muammer Guler also
stressed that he had not called on the army to help police the protests, but added that the use of the gendarmerie was "quite normal".
Trade unions called a strike on Monday to protest against the police crackdown on demonstrators in which some 500 people have been arrested. Medical officials estimate that 5,000 people have been injured and at least four killed in the protests which began on May 28th against a plan to redevelop Istanbul's Gezi Park and snowballed into nationwide protests against the authorities' high-handed response.
Governments worldwide should clamp down on illegal tax evasion by automatically sharing tax data, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has said in report commissioned for this week's G8 summit in Northern Ireland. The report backed new laws and the global standardisation of national tax authorities' reporting and IT systems. "Vast amounts of money are kept offshore and go untaxed" it warned. "As the world becomes increasingly globalised it is becoming easier for all taxpayers to make, hold and manage investments
through foreign financial institutions, something that not long ago was accessible only to a select few." The OECD said that the recommended steps needed to introduce an international system of automated information sharing could be finalised over the course of this year and next. The OECD claimed a move towards automated information exchange had "unprecedented political support", and noted that the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the US have already developed an embryonic system of information exchange.

Firms told to curb pollution
The government has ordered firms in heavy-polluting industries to cut emissions by 30% by 2017. Under the new rules companies will be legally obliged to improve their pollution control equipment and will be penalised for excess emissions. It did not specify which industries would be affected but earlier this year ministers hinted that industries such as iron, steel, petrochemicals and cement would face new targets.

Two adjacent parking spots in the US city of Boston have been auctioned for $560,000 (£357,000), almost double the average price of $313,000 for a single-family home in the region. Bidding for the patch of asphalt began at $42,000 during an onsite auction in the city's upmarket Back Bay area. They were sold by the Internal Revenue Service, which had seized them from their original owner over a tax debt.

UK News Britain takes on internet There now appears to be a concerted effort on the part of the Government in Britain to block from the internet extreme pornography and material likely to incite terrorism. The move follows police investigations leading up to high profile court cases. Material from the internet, linked to the crimes committed, has been recovered from computers. Culture Secretary Maria Miller is to meet the bosses of Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, BT and Virgin, among others, to demand an industry-wide clampdown. She has rejected arguments the internet is too complex to regulate. She wants all companies to sign up to industry guidelines and greater use of on-line filters to control content. She believes permanent bodies need to be set up world-wide to monitor content.
Ms Miller said: “A relatively small number of organisations wield a great deal of online power and I believe that with that power comes a great responsibility.” She has not threatened Government legislation to control the internet, but has not ruled it out. The Government is currently examining “connectivity” and is proposing legislation. Ms Miller hopes the companies will want to avoid statutory controls being incorporated in this legislation. She has the British public on her side. Recent cases involving child pornography and the Woolwich incident in which a soldier was killed in the street have fuelled the case for greater control of the material to be found online. A complication is the fact that the internet is now widely used for intelligence gathering in

Bank sell-off British Chancellor George Osborne is expected to announce this week details of a multi-billion pound privatisation of the Royal Bank of Scotland, which is widely expected to take place in the run-up to the next General Election. Eighty-two per cent of the bank is currently owned by the British

UK unemployment falls by 5,000 After the recent flurry of positive data before the new governor Mark Carney takes the reins at the Bank of England, claimant count change has fallen again for the 7th month. This is another welcome sign that the UK’s job market is finding its feet as the nation continues to hire. The number of people out of work fell by 5,000 to 2.5 million in the three months to April according to the Office for National Statistics. The unemployment rate of the economically active population remained unchanged at 7.8%, with the total number of people in work standing at 29.7 million. Mark Carney will come to office in July and he will have to consider new ways to boost the economy and lending. Borrowing costs have diminished but credit is still shrinking. The BOE said in its quarterly report that higher inflation expectations could lead to inflation becoming more persistent but should remain close to its target. The report also reveals that financial market measures of inflation expectations have become responsive to growth in the economy. Effects on other currencies according to a world leading currency

Last week a hearing in the German constitutional court went under way on a number of legal complaints against the European Central Banks Outright Monetary Purchases (OMT) programme. The German Bundesbank is a key opponent of the programme, however it is unlikely the court will rule against the OMT but it does highlight the divisions and tensions in ECB policy. The economic news was lacklustre last week and with only European CPI and EU Employment change on tap. The inflation data come in as expected at 1.4% vs. 1.4% eyed while the employment change declined by –0.5% versus –.0.2% forecast.

Investors closely looked at US retail sales last Thursday, which increased by more than expected in May. The better than expected reading was boosted by purchases of new cars helping the figure advance at its fastest rate in three months. Sales jumped by 0.6% last month, following a 0.1% rise in April beating consensus of 0.5% growth. Following a drop in April, this report came as a relief as it suggests that consumer spending has not slowed as feared. This retail sales increase comes as goods news following Non-Farm Payrolls, which showed 175,000 new jobs were added in May and it is signalling an underlying strength in the US economic recovery. Investors seemed to be happy to see retail sales increase but felt that the rise in spending was not strong enough to boost the case for tapering asset purchases.
Thrill seekers stuck on Chessington ride On a cloudy Sunday afternoon in June, people in the UK just wanted to have a bit of fun but last weekend, for dozens of people who chose the Chessington World of Adventures as their destination it all went a bit wrong as they found themselves suspended some 20 feet off the ground when their Rameses Revenge ride suffered a “technical fault” at 4:06pm. Adults and children had to wait four hours before they could be released and the London Fire Brigade attended the scene shortly after they were called at around 5pm – almost an hour later. No one was injured.

50 hours overtime What's in a name? in one day In their investigation of "enchufismo" (pulling strings) in Manilva town hall, the Guardia Civil have discovered unusual payments made to friends and relations of Mayor Antonia Muñoz (Izquierda Unida, IU, United Left) and her councillors. In all, they have unearthed more than 470 cases, 80 of which involve
relatives of members of the town council. In one case, a man claimed 50 hours overtime, worked all on the same day. In a 22-page document, the Guardia set out all the ways employees added considerably to their monthly salaries – overtime, awards, compensations, meal and travel allowances, among other things. One cleaner appeared to have worked 44 hours in a 24-hour day, and another worked 54 hours without interruption.
Another worker claimed travel allowances for three trips of 200 kilometres all made on the

Missing Córdoba children's case begins Jurors at the trial of José Bretón on Monday heard lead prosecutor Angeles Rojas, a specialist in gender violence cases, state on Monday that she had “no doubt” that the accused had killed his two children in “the cruelest manner”. “This man sitting next to me is a killer,” she added.
Bretón is charged with murdering Ruth, six, and José, two years old, after a huge search operation failed to locate the children he maintains went missing in a park in Córdoba on October 8th, 2011, He reported them missing to the police that evening but CCTV cameras show Breton entering the park alone. Witnesses can only recall seeing Breton on his own. His family’s properties were searched several times but it was only late last year that
investigators took a closer look at bone fragments inside a home-made incinerator on the family’s semi-rural property which they initially believed belonged to small animals.
A forensic investigation later found them to belong to two children of roughly the same age as the missing children. The lawyer for Ruth Ortiz, the children's mother, told the jury that Breton had planned to burn her along with her children but she had stayed at home in Huelva, sending the children to Cordoba to spend an agreed visit with their father. Breton is sticking to his original story, that the children are still alive somewhere and were probably kidnapped. On Tuesday he told the jury he did not burn his children, that he loved

Clamp down on price abuses
The Town Hall and the association of Tradesmen and Hoteliers are determined to put an end to the abusive prices reported by tourists in some bars and restaurants in the town centre. as a result, municipal inspectors will be making spot checks of the establishments under suspicion, in an attempt to eradicate a practice that is damaging the town's image. Councillor maria del mar rios said they would be especially on the look-out for establishments that do not display their prices prominently. Some 750 homing pigeons will participate in the Costa del Sol's International derby on June 22nd. They will be released in Ocaña (madrid) at 7 am and it will take them between six and seven hours to cover the 380 kilometres to benalmadena at an average speed of 80 kph, depending on the weather. The pigeons, from Holland, Switzerland, Germany, belgium and Portugal as well as Spain arrived in benalmadena in February for practice runs of between two and 260 kilometres. There is a €9,000 prize for the winner. Pigeons can travel 1,000 kilometres a day and reach speeds of up to 100 kph.

Dealing with officialdom
I
couldn't help laughing on Monday night as I listened to four journalists on my favourite political chat show talking about the latest scandal involving Princess Cristina. Apparently, she sold fincas valued at €1.4 million and didn't declare them to the tax men – or so they claim. The princess issued a statement categorically denying that she had ever owned the fincas, which had impressed the journalists because she has on the whole ignored all the nasty things being said about her in the ongoing investigation of her husband. Could the tax people have got it wrong, had there been a mistake – something these journalists simply couldn't believe. I wondered to myself – just which planet do these people live on? They all live and work in Madrid as far as I can make out so perhaps they don't come into contact with the real world as often as we do here in Andalucia.

'm often called on to help people with little problems they have with the local authorities so I know only too well that they can make mistakes. Take the case of the mysterious second home that one Englishwoman was accused of having. She didn't know anything about it until she received notification that if she didn't pay €14,000 in back IBI her bank account was going to be embargoed. So off we toddled to the Ayuntamiento in Coin, who seemed to think she needed to go to neighbouring Alhaurin el Grande, because that's where the property was. No, we said. The house she lives in and the mystery house she allegedly owns – which was about a quarter of a mile away – are in Coin. So we consulted the maps they had, to discover they were made by the Army about 30 years ago! The municipal boundaries have shifted around a lot since then. It finally got to the stage where we asked – if she pays the €14,000, does she get to own the house? Laughs all round – by this time we were jolly old pals of the official we were dealing with, which tends to happen after about 10 meetings. Anyway, the Ayuntamiento finally admitted she didn't own the mystery house, and she transferred her bank account to Gibraltar to make sure no local authority could get their hands on it.

hen there was the case of the house that didn't exist. A friend of mine, being a stickler for playing by the rules, asked me to accompany him to the Ayuntamiento to find out if he needed a permit to put a shed in his garden. We got the lawyer lady who pulled up the area where his house is on to her computer
screen. But there are no houses there, she said. Funny, said my friend, the man next door just sold his last month. It turned out that the computer data had not been updated for years. I ushered him quickly out of the office and told him to do what I had originally suggested – which was to plonk the shed in the corner of his garden and the heck with permits.

ore recently, a couple I know got a bill for IBI on a flat in Marbella. They have never owned a property in Spain, preferring to rent, but they were terrified the tax people would simply take the money out of their account without warning, as they usually do. It turned out that the flat in Marbella was owned by a man with the same surname and a visit to the Catastro (property register) people in Malaga sorted that out – we think. It was the Catastro's mistake in the first place and I know for a fact that their registers are full of little mistakes made during the process of computerising hundreds of thousands of written documents, which can make life miserable for lots of people.

n another occasion, I was taking a friend to the Social Security people in Coin to sort something out. I told her what had happened the last time I'd had to deal with a similar problem but said I had no idea what we were going to run into this time. She confessed that years before another Englishwoman who was helping her out had said something similar and "I thought it was because she didn't know what she was doing". I replied: “No, we know what we're doing but they don't seem to know what they're doing.”

nfortunately, the Spaniards have a penchant for not letting their left hand know what their right hand is doing, and for moving the goalposts at every opportunity. People like myself with years of experience in dealing with officialdom in Spain and Venezuela understand this and can usually work our way around problems with a lot of patience and gritting of teeth. So in this instance I can sympathise deeply with Princess Cristina.

Painful Justice Writes for the English language version of

f you are like most people, you are probably tired of hearing about the alleged lies and underhanded dealings of Luis Bárcenas, the former Popular Party treasurer who is under criminal investigation for tax fraud and bribery. You are also probably tired of hearing about Iñaki Urdangarin and his wife, the Infanta Cristina, and their alleged financial transactions that has raised a lot of questions and ignited outrage among some sectors of society. And what about Gerardo Díaz Ferrán, the former Spanish Businessmen's Confederation (CEOE) president, now in custody as he awaits trial on a host of financial fraud charges?

his brood of corruption scandals is wearing us out, not to mention also tearing apart Spanish society. But what is even more tiresome is the fact that these ongoing inquiries and their details seem only to serve to fill newspaper pages and broadcast airtime with their host of juicy allegations; no one is actually being sentenced to prison or held responsible for these actions. The cases keep coming and there is no end in sight to the investigations. When will these people go on trial, and if indeed, when will probable cause ever be found against them?

t is no wonder that police sources have told El País that, for the past 13 years, there have been more than 800 corruption cases that have flourished involving 2,000 citizens, some of them prominent officials, others not widely known. The biggest chunk of these cases centres in Andalusia. Corruption is undoubtedly a big part of what is wrong with Spain today. The impunity that became a standard in this country during the boom years has come back to bite, and that mauling unfortunately comes at a bad time when a lot of people are going through painful periods in their lives. It hurts when institutions look the other way when it comes to protecting the influential and powerful.

mnesty International on Monday released a scathing report on Spain, charging that the Spanish government is not following its international human rights obligations by sweeping under the rug investigations into crimes committed during the Franco regime. AI states that some people searching for truth about their loved ones who died or disappeared during that dark period have had to go to Argentina to try to seek justice. In that South American nation, there is an active investigation based on universal
justice against former members of Franco’s government who are still alive. "Impunity is guaranteed in Spain. There are no investigations, nor does the government cooperate with current inquiries in third countries,” said Esteban Beltrán, president of the AI Spain chapter on Monday.

n the case being built against Bárcenas, the allegations will continue to unfold but there really won’t be much in the way of justice against this once powerful figure who holds a lot of information about people in high places. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has refused to mention his name in public and avoids, despite the political costs, answering questions about the reported dealings inside his party. One has to wonder what type of key Bárcenas holds to unlock a Pandora’s box at the PP. Now it turns out that Bárcenas and his wife – who is also under investigation for tax evasion – have allegedly been fabricating their testimonies before prosecutors concerning their Swiss bank accounts and how they earned hundreds of thousands of euros annually.

he legal process is very slow in this country but as the wheels of justice moil without an end Spanish society has become immune to the shocking allegations that are being laid out in front of them – not because people don’t believe the stories behind the cases at hand but because many have come to realise that these inquiries will never get off the ground. When the confidence of citizens concerning their institutions begins to die away, government and law enforcement becomes severely weakened. Spain is a wounded animal.

Paul Desforges goes Benefit fraudsters and festival thieves in Spain riding for charity Age Concern is very grateful to Paul Desforges for undertaking a sponsored 225km crossPennine cycle ride from Whitehaven to Tynemouth over three days in early May to raise funds for the charity. Over 100 sponsors backed Paul to the tune of 1,230€ – a fantastic achievement. Eileen Dry, President of Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva, received the cheque from Paul last week. Paul did not ride alone but was supported by Mark, Peter and Alan who made sure he rode to the end, and none of them needed the services of the charity when their goal was reached.

The large number of British expats living in Spain, some 800,000, puts Spain at the top of the list for overseas benefit fraud. The British Embassy in Madrid have sent out a press release, with a warning that investigators from the UK department of work and pensions have issued a fresh appeal for British expatriates living in Spain to report anyone they suspect of fraudulently claiming UK benefits. David Freud, Minister for Welfare Reform, said: “Taxpayers’ money should be going to the people who need it most, not lining the pockets of criminals. The vast majority of British people overseas are law abiding. But those who are fraudulently claiming benefits while living abroad are committing a crime. We are determined to put a stop to it.” The three most common types of benefit fraud in Spain involve people who
are on means-tested benefits going abroad but failing to declare their absence; have undeclared property abroad; are working while claiming sickness benefits. In Spain claims for Income Support or Pension Credit are the most frequently investigated for fraud. Concerned citizens can call the freephone 900 554 440 or fill in a form at www.dwp.gov.uk/benefitthieves-spain.

Huge donation to Age Care raised by Masons
Lafayette Lodge held a Racenight at Club La Naranja, Calahonda which raised €1,500 for Age Care Association, the Master's nominated charity. Mike Brown, Master of Lafayette Lodge, whose wife, Marion is a volunteer at the Age Care Charity Shop in El Zoco, said: 'We support Age Care because we appreciate the good works they do with the local older English speaking community and, at some stage in the future, we all may need their help but hopefully not for a few years yet!" Lafayette Lodge makes a valuable contribution to the charitable work undertaken on the Costa del Sol, and are delighted to donate a further €1,500 to Age Care. Coffee mornings are held every Tuesday 11 am to 1 pm at the Age Care Advice Centre, Doña Lola, Calahonda, next to Devine's Restaurant, and everyone's welcome. Beverley Morland, Vice President of Age Care added: “This donation will enable Age Care to continue to offer more to our local community in so many different ways, so thank you Lafayette Lodge.”

Age Care Advice Centre Manager, Claudia D. Langer wants to inform readers of the charity’s urgent need for volunteers. Age Care is looking for a special type of volunteer for their Advice Centre who can give their time, once a week from 10 am to 2 pm, to offer information to the local English-speaking community. Claudia
explains: "Many Englishspeaking residents visit our friendly Advice Centre in Doña Lola for information on, for example, how to access the Spanish health system or where do they go for their NIE, and are lost, or maybe frightened, because they don’t speak Spanish."
Volunteers are particularly needed over the summer period. Someone who can speak English and Spanish and has administration and computer skills would be perfect. It is important that they should have been living in Spain for a while and be familiar with the bureaucracy which can be so confusing – but full training will be given! So if you are staying in Spain this summer and can commit just one day a week, please contact Claudia at the Advice Centre on Tel 952 933 409, email: info@agecare costa.org, or pop into Age Care’s Charity Shop in El Zoco, Calahonda – and pick up a bargain too! Lions support AFESOL Last week the La Cala Lions club presented a second cheque for €1,000 to Afesol the charity headquartered in Benalmadena.
Founded in 1999 by its president, Conchita Cuevas, Afesol provides a range of services to those suffering from mental health issues. A variety of outreach programmes are available including one based at Alhaurin prison which is managed by the charity’s resident psychologist. In

Tapas party for volunteers La Iglesia Bar, Benalmadena, is the venue for Age Care's latest Drop In centre and was delighted to host an Age Care Open House on Monday 17th June 2013 with a feast of tapas! As well as Age Care Committee members, there were volunteers from Calahonda and Fuengirola on hand to give advice and offer support. One potential volunteer said: "I have a family and a busy life but I'd like to volunteer for a few hours, maybe one day a week?" Age Care is always looking for volunteers for a variety of roles. Birds on the Wing - Doves - look a little closer
The Collared Dove is a familiar bird as they became very common throughout northern Europe from 1950 onwards. The Collared Dove can be seen the whole year through in Andalucia. Although not so common, another dove present in Andalucía is the Turtle Dove. These doves only visit in the summer months, arriving in April and early May and returning in September to their winter home south of the Sahara Desert where they remain for the rest of
the year. During the short period the Turtle Doves are in Andalucía, a pair will breed and raise two and sometimes three broods of two or three young.

colourful bird than the Collared Dove but despite this stronger colouring they often go unnoticed. The reason being Turtle Doves are rather shy and hard to observe, keeping themselves well hidden in the tree canopy. When they are seen in the open, often perched on telephone wires or foraging on the ground, they receive nothing more than a glance, as they are assumed to be the more common and less colourful Collared Doves.
When seen clearly, however, the Turtle Dove is unmistakable. Both
male and female have a blue-grey head and nape with a black and white panel on the side of the neck. A pink mauve breast and orange-brown wings, spotted in black. In flight they show an almost black fan-shaped tail prominently edged in white.
The Turtle Dove often sings and its song is quite distinctive, a deep, hard and purring, 'turrrrrr turrrrrr turrrrrr', repeated several times. The song might not immediately be recognised as a bird song but it is quite distinctive and can be heard on line at

So next time you see a dove this summer, look a little closer, it may be a Turtle Dove.

It’s sad to see so many floundering businesses these days, so it’s exciting to know that one has had to move to bigger premises to cope with demand. Rob Stevens proudly opened his Manhattan Show Bar this week in Benalmadena and, although his new location is bigger than his previous Picasso’s, on opening night I was lucky to find a free bar stool. When I arrived, Laura Oldfield was giving her all to a wonderfully responsive audience. Singing numbers from Grease, 70s disco and pop favourites, this competent young singer had the crowd eating out of her hand. Manhattan’s décor has a belle époque feel to it, with its warm woodwork, ruched red and black curtains and paintwork and gaslight-type fittings.
The great Rob Stevens took to the stage with an excellent Freddie Mercury tribute after which an extensive free buffet was available. A DJ then took the reins taking the party into the early hours. Coming up this week are Rob Stevens’ “Hits out of Hell” show plus tributes to Whitney Houston, Madonna and The Four Tops, and on Monday 26th The Jersey Boys show.

W
hen it comes to period drama, the BBC really comes into its own, and the licence fees are forgiven, so here is another one that is definitely worth its salt.

Man o f St eel Directed by Zack Snyder Starring: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Kevin Cosner The last attempt to reboot the Superman franchise, back in 2006, didn’t make much money for the studio, failed to revitalize the franchise, and star Brandan Routh disappeared without trace. So there is a lot riding on this fresh attempt to breathe new life into our comic book hero.
Producer and co-writer Christopher Nolan was the man at the helm of the super-successful Batman reboot and introduces a similarly darker edge to this movie. And director Snyder demonstrated his accomplishments at using special effects and CGI to startlingly entertaining effect in 300 – so this should be a match made in heaven. It’s an origins movie so fans will be familiar with the story. The planet Krypton is facing destruction so Jor-El (Crowe in excellent form) places his newborn son Kal-El into a space vessel and launches him to Earth to start a new life.
On Earth the boy is
raised by his earth father Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner) and mother Ma Kent (Diane Lane). Jonathan is fearful for his son’s future as an alien with powers that will frighten those around him.
But Clark’s past catches up with him. He may have been secretly using his powers to save the lives of those around him but he is forced out of the shadows by the arrival on Earth of the evil General Zod (Michael Shannon) who was banished from Krypton for his evil crimes and is now searching for something he believes to be in Clark’s possession.
So the Man of Steel must now assume the mantle of responsibility and save the Earth. The Superman costume is now as cool as the one worn by Christian Bale in Batman and Cavill (the Brit actor best known for his role in TV’s The Tudors) wears it with a superhero insouciance. If the movie rings the tills at the box office he is
likely to become one of the superhero poster boys, much like Christopher Reeve before him.

hroughout the course of the war Christopher is back and forth. During this time he bumps into Ms. Wannop again, asking why he didn’t kiss her five years earlier? A few years later they meet again, by now Sylvia is aware of Ms. Wannop’s intentions towards Christopher and she is jealous of their relationship. Sylvia is extremely manipulative and selfish, she detests Christopher, but at the
same time she loves him and doesn’t want to lose him. Now with Ms. Wannop wiggling her way into Christopher’s life, she will do anything to win him back.
I
couldn’t help but feel sorry for Christopher. He is constantly trying to please everyone, but whatever he does never seems to be right. On the other hand, I can fully understand Sylvia’s frustration with him, he’s such a goodie two shoes, boring and billy no mates. He is keeping up appearances, while attempting to sort out his personal life which is spilling all over the place. However, during his time in the army he loses his complacent attitude becomes a stronger person, as well as losing some weight.
C
hristopher clings to another age of values and his determination to live according to his principles is admirable. “Parade’s End” is a story full of sensitivity, subtlety and restraint. These qualities are remarkably enhanced by the performance of Benedict Cumberbatch who shows an extraordinary palette of emotions and whose performance is reminiscent of a young Edward Fox. The screenplay written by Tom Stoppard is well crafted and his dialogue is not only quirky at times, but sometimes, downright startling.

Hot Chocolate Fudge Sundaes Ingredients:
For the very easy vanilla ice cream: 1 pint (570 ml) condensed milk 10 fl oz (275 ml) single cream 14 fl oz (400 ml) crème fraîche 2 teaspoons vanilla extract For the fudge sauce: 8 oz (225 g) dark chocolate (50-55% cocoa solids) 1 x 170 g tin evaporated milk For the topping: 3 oz (75 g) mixed nuts (pecans, Brazils,

almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, on their own or in combination), coarsely chopped and lightly toasted 6 dessertspoons whipping cream or crème fraîche

o make the ice cream, simply put everything into a bowl and use an electric hand mixer to whisk all the ingredients together thoroughly. Then pour the mixture into the polythene freezer box and place it in the coldest part of the freezer. After about 2 hours, or when the edges are starting to freeze, remove it and use the hand mixer to give it another good mix and break down any ice crystals. Return to the freezer, then repeat the whisking after 3 more hours. Finally, return it to the freezer for a further 6 to 8 hours, by which time it should be at serving consistency. If you've made it a long time ahead and it's very hard, transfer it to the main body of the fridge for 30 minutes to soften enough to scoop. o make the chocolate fudge sauce, all you do is pour the evaporated milk into a small

heatproof bowl, then break up the chocolate into small squares and add them to the milk. Place the bowl on a saucepan of barely simmering water, making sure the bottom doesn't touch the water, and leave the chocolate to melt, stirring from time to time. It will take about 10 minutes to become a lovely fudgy mass. o serve the sundaes, put three scoops of very firm, cold ice cream per person into tall glasses, followed by 3 dessertspoons of hot fudge sauce, followed by 1 dessertspoon whipped cream or crème fraîche. Finally sprinkle over some chopped nuts and serve absolutely immediately.

'Quiet epidemic' of Men 'to blame for male cancer in UK the menopause' Action is needed to fight a "quiet epidemic" of oesophageal cancer, which is on the rise in the UK, particularly among men, according to Cancer Research UK. New figures show that men are almost three times more likely than women to get the cancer – one of the biggest gender divides in cancer rates. Oesophageal cancer – cancer of the gullet or food pipe – is the ninth most common cancer in the UK. It is one of the most difficult cancers to detect and treat, with only about one in 10 patients surviving for 10 years or more. Latest figures show 5,600 UK men (almost 15 out of every 100,000) developed the disease in 2010, compared with 2,800 UK women (about five out of every 100,000).
There are two types of oesophageal cancer: squamous cell carcinoma, which is linked to smoking, drinking and a low fruit intake; and adenocarcinoma – linked to obesity, smoking and persistent acid reflux. Researchers believe a steady rise in the number of adenocarcinomas in men is behind the gender gap.
Tim Underwood, an oesophageal surgeon and researcher at the University of Southampton who is running the New York Marathon to raise money for research, said diagnosing the disease earlier was key to improving the chances of survival. He said food getting stuck when you swallow and persistent heart burn are
not normal: "If this is happening to you, you need to see your GP." He said the vast majority of people won't have anything seriously wrong with them, but it was important to get checked out.
"If left untreated acid reflux – often called heartburn – can damage cells of the oesophagus leading to a condition called Barrett's oesophagus which in turn can be a precursor of oesophageal cancer."
A spokesman for Cancer Research UK said the factors behind the rise in oesophageal cancer were unclear: "We think it may be linked to some changes that we've seen in people's lifestyles, for example increasing levels of obesity."
Research projects are under way in the UK to understand oesophageal cancer better and develop techniques for earlier diagnosis.
Evolutionary geneticists at Canada's McMaster University have said men's tendency to choose younger mates meant fertility became pointless for older women and that this eventually led to the menopause and its side effects of hot flushes, night sweats and mood swings.
The fact that humans are the only species where females cannot reproduce throughout their lives has puzzled researchers for years. Previous theories had proposed a "grandmother effect", suggesting that women lose their fertility at an age where they might not live to see a child grow, and instead are available to care for younger women's children. The menopause was therefore seen as the block to older women from continuing to reproduce. But this latest theory suggests that it is the other way round – it is the lack of reproduction that has given rise to menopause.
In the UK, the average age for women to go
through the menopause is now 52 even though the average woman goes on to live for another 30 years.
The geneticists said this extended longevity – plus later childbirth – could potentially alter the timing of the menopause, over a significant period of time. They suggested this trend would mean those women would have a later menopause, and those genes would be passed on to their daughters "with the possibility of menopausal age being delayed". However evolutionary biologists in the department of zoology at the University of Oxford, have challenged the
theory, arguing that the human male preference for younger females is likely to be because older females are less fertile. They said: "It makes more sense to see the human male preference for younger females largely as an evolved response to the menopause, and to assume that ancestral males would have been wise to mate with any females that could produce offspring." They added: "Evolutionarily-speaking, older females faced an interesting 'choice': have a child that may not reach adulthood before your own death, or stop reproducing and instead focus on helping your younger relatives reproduce."

While most women with OHSS will have mild symptoms and recover, those few with severe OHSS become very ill and can die. Now researchers at Imperial College London Hammersmith have found a way to make IVF safer by using kisspeptin. The early results in trials involving 30 women show kisspeptin can be used to stimulate
egg release in a gentler, more natural way.
Kisspeptin worked in 29 of the 30 women and 28 of the women were then able to use their eggs to attempt IVF. So far only one baby – a healthy boy called Heath – has been born.
When the researchers finish their current study this summer they hope to begin bigger trials in patients at high risk of OHSS. Experts welcomed the breakthrough but warned it would be years before the treatment became more widely available.

Pictures have emerged which appear to show TV cook and author Nigella Lawson, 53, being assaulted by her husband, Charles Saatchi, 70, after he appeared to grab her round the throat during a heated argument in at Scott’s restaurant in London’s upmarket Mayfair area on June 9th. Nigella can then later be seen leaving the restaurant in tears. However, the advertising guru and art collector has described the incident with his wife as a playful tiff. Speaking to the London Evening Standard on Monday, Saatchi said: "About a week ago, we were sitting outside a restaurant having an intense debate about the children, and I held Nigella's neck repeatedly while
attempting to emphasise my point. There was no grip, it was a playful tiff. The pictures are horrific, but give a far more drastic and violent impression of what took place. Nigella's tears were because we both hate arguing, not because she had been hurt. We had made up by the time we were home. The paparazzi were congregated outside our house after the story broke yesterday morning, so I told Nigella to take the kids off till the dust settled." Ms Lawson's spokesperson said there would not be any comment on Saatchi's explanation, but did confirm that she "isn't at the family home". Mr Saatchi voluntarily entered a London police
station and accepted a caution for his actions. An onlooker said: "It was utterly shocking to watch I have no doubt she was scared. It was horrific, really. She was very tearful and was constantly dabbing her eyes. Nigella was very, very upset. She had a real look of fear on her face. No man should do that to a woman. She raised her voice and got angry but at the same time was trying to calm him down, almost like a child. The kiss was a strange thing. He was being intimidating, threatening. And yet she kissed him." Police confirmed they had not received a complaint of assault from Lawson or anyone else. We just hope he’s learnt his lesson.

Way to go, Ozzie at 64 Hairy hits the top again!
Some say – well actually most would say – that Ozzie Osbourne is very lucky to be alive. After years of self abuse the ageing rocker has hit number one in the album charts again after a gap of over four decades. Speaking on TV on Monday he said that he was “speechless, utterly gobsmacked” at finding himself at the top again but said that he thought that people had become disillusioned and fed up with manufactured pop all the time and wanted to listen to some real music. A few weeks ago Rod Stewart broke the record for the longest gap at the
top. Now Ozzie’s Black Sabbath band are there with their new album “13” which, surprisingly enough, is their 13th album to go on sale! Their first number one was their second album “Paranoid” in 1970. Osbourne said it was "great" to have beaten Stewart, but he added: "Rod's the same as us, we've got something other people haven't got. The likes of Rod, and Elton John and us have got something different. We know our craft." He said the band would "probably" release another album, but added: "We're still revelling in coming
back with this. I don't want to promise anything to anyone. It took us long enough to do this, and we can't wait another 43 years to have another number one. If it comes to pass we don't make another record, then I can rest easily knowing we finished things properly with 13." Locks of hair taken from the Rolling Stones' frontman, Mick Jagger, before he was famous are to be auctioned off for charity. The select strands, that are owned by Chrissie Shrimpton – who dated him in the early ‘60s – are expected to raise an estimated sale price of between £1,400 and £2,600 when they go under the hammer on July 3rd at British auction house Bonhams.

Two British traffic patrol officers for North Berwick to the east of Edinburgh, were involved in an unusual incident recently while checking for speeding motorists on the A1 Great North Road. One of the officers used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill, and was surprised when the speed was
recorded at over 300mph. The machine then stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.The radar had in fact locked on to a NATO Tornado fighter jet over the North Sea, which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the Borders district. Back at police headquarters, the chief constable fired off a stiff complaint to the RAF Liaison office. Back came the reply in true RAF laconic style: “Thank you for your message which allows us to complete the

I hope that your letter in last week’s issue about the noise people make these days at concerts drives home to those responsible that they aren’t the only ones who have paid for, and want to enjoy, the show. I am constantly asking people to be quiet when trying to watch a play at the theatre, a film at the cinema or a show being put on somewhere and, oddly enough, we don’t all want to hear these ignorant people’s conversations that seem to be on the whole about who is doing what with whom

It seems to me that this has been getting worse and worse since the advent of video where you can pause whatever it is you are watching, get up and walk around or make a cup of tea, have a chat, then start the thing over again. At a live show, you don’t have that luxury so, please, whoever you are – and as the editor remarked last week, you are well aware of your behaviour – learn a few manners before you attend the next event or simply keep away and let the rest of us enjoy what we’ve

The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After their tent is all set up, they fall sound asleep. One hour later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says, "Kemo-Sabe, look towards sky, what you see?" The Lone Ranger replies, "I see millions of stars." "What that tell you?" asked Tonto. The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, "Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially millions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo.

Furthermore, the Sidewinder air-to-ground missiles aboard the fully armed aircraft had also locked on to the target. Fortunately the Dutch pilot flying the Tornado responded to the missile status alert intelligently and was able to override the automatic protection system before the missile was launched.”

t’s that time of year again in the Northern Hemisphere, when the June solstice is nearly upon us. For us in this hemisphere, this upcoming solstice, which falls on June 21st for most of us around the world, marks the longest day of the year. Early dawns, long hot days, late sunsets and short nights. The sun at its maximum height each day, as it crosses the sky. Meanwhile, south of the equator, winter is about to begin. ncient cultures knew that the sun’s path across the sky, the length of daylight, and the location of the sunrise and sunset all shifted in a regular way throughout the year. They built monuments, such as Stonehenge, to follow the sun’s yearly progress. oday, we know that the solstice is an astronomical event, caused by Earth’s tilt on its axis and its motion in orbit around the sun. Because the Earth doesn’t orbit upright, instead it is tilted on its axis by 23½°, Earth’s Northern and Southern Hemispheres trade places in receiving the sun’s light and warmth most directly. t the June solstice, Earth is positioned in its orbit so that the North Pole is leaning most toward the sun. As seen from Earth, the sun is directly overhead at noon 23½° north of the equator, at an imaginary line circling the globe known as the Tropic of Cancer. This is as far north as the sun ever gets. On the Arctic Circle the sun will not set on Friday but will skim along the horizon before rising again. ll locations north of the equator have days longer than 12 hours at the June solstice. ultures universally have had markers, holidays, and alignments – all related to the solstice. Some 5,000 years ago, ancient pagan Britons people erected huge stones in a circle on a broad plain in Wiltshire southern England and aligned them with the June solstice sunrise. We may never understand the full significance of Stonehenge or even how it was built. But we do know that knowledge of this sort wasn’t isolated to just one part of the world. Around the same time Stonehenge was being constructed in England, two great pyramids and then the Sphinx were built on Egyptian sands. If you stood at the Sphinx on the summer solstice and gazed toward the two pyramids, you’d see the sun set exactly between them. o if the June solstice brings the longest day, why do we experience the hottest weather in late July and August? his effect is called “the lag of the seasons”. It’s the same reason it’s hotter in mid-afternoon than at noontime. Earth just takes a while to warm up after a long winter. Even in June, ice and snow still blanket the ground in some places. The sun has to melt the ice – and warm the oceans – and then we feel the most sweltering summer heat. ce and snow have been melting since spring began. Melt water and rainwater have been trickling down through snow on tops of glaciers. But the runoff from glaciers isn’t as great now as it’ll be in another month, even though sunlight is striking the Northern Hemisphere most directly around now. o wait another month for the hottest weather. It’ll come when the days are already beginning to shorten again, as Earth continues to move in orbit around the sun, bringing us closer to another winter.

Lorenzo escapes crashfest to win home GP Jorge Lorenzo was a start-to-finish winner of his home race at the Catalunya MotoGP as the reigning champion closed the gap to Pedrosa at the top of the 2013 standings. Lorenzo went into the lead at the first corner, edging ahead of Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa and controlled the race from the front to win by 1.763 seconds for his third victory of the season.
Pedrosa showed teammate Marc Marquez how it should be done in the closing laps to narrowly claim the runner-up spot with Valentino Rossi finishing in a lonely fourth.
Lorenzo has reduced the gap to Pedrosa at the top of the championship to seven points after six rounds, with Marquez a further 23 points in arrears. The Barcelona track proved difficult for many of the leading riders including Tech 3 Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow, and Ducati's Nicky Hayden. Veronica Campbell-Brown tests positive for banned diuretic World 200m champion Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica has tested positive for a banned substance. A sample taken from the 31-year-old at the Jamaica Invitational on 4th May tested positive for a banned diuretic – something which is viewed as a masking agent by the World Anti-Doping
Agency. Campbell-Brown won 200m and 4x100m relay golds at the 2004 Olympics and retained her 200m title in 2008. She now faces a possible twoyear suspension from athletics.
At London 2012, Campbell-Brown took bronze in the 100m and
was a member of Jamaica's silver medal-winning sprint relay team.
Diuretics, which promote the production of urine and are used to help high blood pressure, are banned because they can be used by athletes to hide other performanceenhancing substances.
MotoGP: Suzuki will return to action in 2015 The Japanese team, who raced for 37 years before they left at the end of 2011 for financial reasons, are testing their new bike in Spain this week. Diaz already had some good results in major live poker events before he was put firmly onto the poker map when he won Event #12 of the 2011 WSOP, the $1,500 Triple Chance No Hold'em Limit tournament. It was at this tournament that the poker world learned that Diaz was diagnosed with cancer aged just four years old and had beaten the illness, a becoming before successful poker pro.
At the time, it was a great story but fast forward two years later and Diaz finds himself in the headlines for all of the wrong reasons.

It is not the first time a poker player has been banned from the WSOP after an off-the-table matter. In 2011, Carter Gill found himself banned from all future WSOP events after admitting to throwing a girl's clothes out of his hotel room's window. Gill was allowed to compete at the 2012 WSOP after receiving a pardon from the WSOP's management.

Lions lose their 100% record to Brumbies
The British and Irish Lions lost their 100% record as a revamped side were narrowly beaten 14-12 by ACT Brumbies. Tevita Kuridrani scored an early try to put the Super 15 leaders in front and Jesse Mogg kicked three penalties. Stuart Hogg kicked two penalties but twice hit the post as a Lions side with five debutants struggled. A raft of 57th-minute replacements saw the tourists improve but they fell short of a stirring win. The Lions face Australia in the first Test at Brisbane on Monday.
Justin Rose wins U.S.Open
Justin Rose received a text message telling him to "go out and be the man your dad taught you to be". Even before he had won the U.S. Open on Sunday at Merion. Rose pointed skyward as a nod to his late father and coach, Ken.
"The look up to the heavens was absolutely for my dad," Rose said. "Father's Day was not lost on me today. You don't have opportunities to really dedicate a win to someone you love. And today was about him." Rose shot an even-par 70 on Sunday, to win the U.S. Open by two shots over Phil Mickelson and Jason Day. The 32-year-old became the first English player to win the U.S. Open since Tony Jacklin 43 years before, and shared the experience with

Rose played Merion without a double bogey and tied Day and Luke Donald for the most birdies (15). Rose made back-toback birdies twice on Sunday, including at Nos. 12 and 13 to be briefly the only player under par. But it was a par that ultimately won him the championship.

french footballers to go on trial for soliciting minor Two French football stars, Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema, are to go on trial in Paris on charges of paying for sex with an under-age prostitute. Both deny the allegations and the girl involved, Zahia Dehar, has said neither player knew she was not 18 at the time. Ms Dehar, now 21, is a household name after launching her own fashion label. Under French law, paid sex with someone under the age of 18 is regarded as sex with a minor – punishable by three years in prison and a 45,000 euro fine.

Joe Kinnear appointment confirmed by Newcastle Newcastle have confirmed the appointment of Joe Kinnear as director of football on a three-year deal. The club made their announcement after the former Magpies’ manager had revealed on Sunday that he would be taking up the role. The 66-year-old will report to the club's board as the senior executive in charge of all football-related matters at the St James' Park outfit. Current Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will report to Kinnear. "The board are pleased to welcome Joe back to the club," managing director Derek Llambias told the club's website.
