Turkey protests: Union calls a two-day countrywide strike One of the largest trade union groups started strike action on Tuesday to support continuing anti-government protests in a number of cities.

The left-wing Kesk trade union confederation, representing some 240,000 workers, accused the government of committing "state terror". The strike affects schools and universities as well as government offices.

In a statement, Kesk said: "The state terror implemented against entirely peaceful protests is continuing in a way that threatens civilians' life safety." The

confederation,

representing 11 unions, accused the government of undermining democracy. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan remained defiant on Monday in the face of continuing violence, dismissing any suggestion of a "Turkish Spring". In a televised news conference he said: "The main opposition party CHP has provoked my innocent citizens. Those who make news and call these events the Turkish Spring do not know Turkey." He went ahead with a

visit to Morocco, where he insisted the situation was "calming down".

Meanwhile protesters in Istanbul and the capital, Ankara, shouted "Tayyip, resign!" while waving red flags and banners and blowing whistles, braving the police attempt to disperse them with tear gas and water cannons.

Turkey protests: Union calls ORLD a two day countrywide strike

By Kym Wickham

What a great night was had by all who went along to The Olive Tree in Coin last Wednesday to see the Rod Stewart tribute show. I had been up and working since 5am so was a bit worn out before I got there at 9:30pm but, once the show started and I’d been fed, the tiredness just fell away and everyone sang along, danced and had one of the best evenings for a long time so, if you get the chance to catch this show, it’s well worth the effort and I eventually got home at 2am! I really am too old for this lark but wouldn’t have missed it for the world. Up here in Coin we had all missed the live music put on at JK’s since it closed and now Tina and family have taken up the mantle and have a whole host of evenings coming up for us “campo dwellers” to enjoy but, you don’t have to live in Coin to enjoy them, why not just come up for the evening and see how we enjoy ourselves up here? I was talking about books

last week. I’ve inevitably started a new one that the author gave me at the Homes, Gardens and Lifestyle show. I will review it when I’ve read it. I like proper books but also have a Sony e-reader for when I travel so it came with me to Australia the year before last. However, I haven’t used it since and now won’t re-charge so I guess the battery’s died. At least paper books don’t do that and you can read them again and again without the battery giving up the ghost! Long live paperbacks - especially 2nd hand ones!

On Sunday a 20-year-old protester died when he was hit by a car which ignored warnings to stop and ploughed into a crowd of protesters in the Mayis district of Istanbul.

In a sign of continuing concern in Washington, US Secretary of State John Kerry spoke of "excessive use of force" by the police. "We obviously hope that there will be a full investigation of those incidents and full restraint from the police force." The protests began on May 28th over plans to redevelop Gezi Park near Taksim Square in

Protesters accuse the Turkish government of becoming increasingly authoritarian. They fear Mr Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) is trying to impose conservative Islamic values on the officially secular country and infringe on their personal freedoms. Officials said more than 1,700 people have been arrested in demonstrations in 67 towns and cities, though many have since been released.

'Encouraging' drop Experts agree in unemployment

Unemployment dropped by 98,265 in May, the biggest drop for that month since figures started to be kept in 1997. Previously the best drop was in 2005, when it fell by 88,552. Unemployment now stands at 4,890,928, nearly two per cent down over April. The figures for people registered with the Social Security system rose in May by 134,660. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had told the annual meeting of the Economic Circle in Sitges last Saturday that the "worst is over", basing his optimism on the then-unreleased figures on unemployment and the number of people who registered with the Social Security system last month which he described as "very encouraging".

Rajoy also told the meeting that his government has no plans to raise value added tax (IVA), saying that Brussels has never asked Spain to raise the rate, which stands at 21 per cent for most items and purchases. In fact, the European Commission had asked Spain to raise IVA on products that currently fall under a special rate category, but the government has declined because it fears it could affect Spain's tourism. Rajoy said: "Portugal has VAT of 23 percent for its restaurants and hotels – ours is at 10 percent. Our priority was to avoid a bailout because if not we would be in the same position as Portugal." The Prime Minister

went on to say that his government hopes to lower taxes as soon as possible and would cut income tax by 2015. He reiterated his calls for Europe to do more to move quickly toward a fiscal and political union, which he said is needed to calm financial markets and guarantee the future of the euro. "We aren't growing because Europe isn't growing," he said.

In response to the Bank of Spain's suggestion last Friday that the minimum wage should be waived in certain circumstances – such as the poor employability of some workers – the International Labour Organization (ILO) warned about the potential economic threat posed by the wage devaluation currently being implemented in some countries such as Spain in order to restore competiveness. The minimum annual salary in Spain is currently 14 monthly payments of €650. In its World of Work

Report for 2013, the ILO also warned that if depressing wages is taken to an extreme, it could further depress the economy and increase poverty. Private sector wages in the first quarter of this year fell by 0.9 per cent over 2012, after an increase of 1.7 per cent in 2011, while in the public sector, wages dropped 0.4 per cent after an increase of 0.3 per cent last year. The ILO said there was still a lack of sufficient statistical information to evaluate the full impact of the labour reform.

Kung fu champion Di Stefano 'being held prisoner' admits murder Police in Bilbao arrested world champion kung fu martial artist Juan Carlos Aguilar on suspicion of murder on Sunday after members of the public alerted them to a violent assault on a prostitute.

When the Ertzaintza (Basque police) arrived at his Zen4 gymnasium owned by Juan Carlos Aguilar on Sunday night, they found a badly beaten prostitute on the floor. The victim was taken to hospital in a serious state and is in a coma. The police launched a search of the surrounding area after discovering human remains in garbage bags in the building.

Divers trawled the city’s river in the Duesto neighbourhood and the canine unit was called on to check the building for further bodies. The city's main refuse tip was also being combed for garbage bags originating from the area around the gym. A

police spokesman said they would be gone through “one by one” and that the investigation could take “a very long time”.

Aguilar confessed to the murder of a Czech prostitute after more human remains were found at his home. A police spokesman said forensic investigators were trying to determine if the remains belonged to one or more bodies. Aguilar was crowned world kung fu champion three times and national champion on eight occasions.

A well-known figure in the martial arts world, he won fame after reportedly becoming the first Westerner to be titled a Shaolin master in China. He was interviewed extensively by newspapers, television and radio. In one interview with TVE, Aguilar described martial arts as a path to “controlling your emotions”.

The fiancée of football legend Alfredo Di Stefano claimed on Sunday that her 86-year old husbandto-be is being kept "a prisoner" by his family in a bid to stop the marriage to her.

In a statement read out to reporters in Madrid, Gina Gonzalez, 36, who met the former Real Madrid star when she was hired to help write his autobiography three years ago, called on his friends as well as the Spanish Football Federation, the European and world football bodies Uefa and Fifa and even the Argentine government to step in and help. Di Stefano's five children

applied for legal guardianship of their father last month to stop the wedding on the grounds that he is no longer of sound mind.

Gonzalez said his children had cut off his phone to cut off access to the outside world, a claim they denied. She said she had gone to the police over the "virtual imprisonment by his children" but that nothing had been done about her complaint. The Argentine-born striker, who scored 216 goals for Real Madrid between 1953 and 1964, announced his plans to marry last month despite opposition from his offspring worried over the fate of his estate.

Age of consent may be raised

Health Minister ana Mato has proposed raising the age of consent from the current 13 to 16 to bring it in line with recommendations by the United nations and the Council of europe, which believe the age of consent to a sexual relationship should not be below 15 years.

the reform is included in a broad plan approved by the government to protect children from abuse and exploitation and comes following widespread national debate after the murder of a 13-year old girl by her 39-year old lover last october. the age of consent was raised from 12 to 13 years old in 1996 but remained amongst the lowest in europe – second only to the Vatican City, which still stands at 12. the age of consent in the UK, Switzerland and norway is 16 years, 17 in ireland, and 15 in France and the netherlands.

Cyclists revolt over bike helmet plan

Some 20 city councils, including Barcelona and Madrid, have rejected outright making cyclist helmets compulsory by law, as proposed by the traffic authority (dGt) last week. the rejection is supported by all the political and dGt chief María Seguí has suggested that Parliament debate the measure on its own before the new traffic and safety regulations are put into place. a spokesman for one cycling association, ConBici, has warned of the "health costs" that would be caused by the fall in the numbers of people who would use their bikes, because "many people would stop taking exercise" if they were forced to wear a helmet. He also pointed to the low mortality statistics among cyclists: in 2011, 49 people were killed while on their bikes, of whom just 12 were in a city at the time.

Manning 'systematically harvested' documents

Military prosecutors have said US soldier Bradley Manning "systematically harvested" a vast trove of secret documents to share with Wikileaks. At the start of Private Manning's court martial on Monday, prosecutor Captain Joe Morrow said Pte Manning used his military training to gain the notoriety he craved and attempted to hide what he had done at every step of the process. He said he would introduce evidence that Osama Bin Laden himself had gained access to some of the Wikileaks information – and had put it to use. In an opening statement, Pte Manning's lawyer David Coombs said he was "young, naive and good-intentioned" when he arrived in Iraq. But in late 2009, after an Iraqi died in

an attack, he grew disillusioned after seeing his comrades celebrating because no US soldiers had been hurt. After that incident, Pte Manning, 25, began collecting information he thought would "make the world a better place" if made public. "He believed this information showed how we value human life," Mr Coombs said. "He was troubled by that. He believed that if the American public saw it, they too would be troubled."

Pte Manning has not denied his role in the leak,

and faces up to life in prison if convicted of aiding the enemy. Earlier this year, Pte Manning pleaded guilty to 10 of the 22 charges against him related to the leaks, but not to the most serious charge. The Manning-Wikileaks case is considered the largest-ever leak of secret US government documents.

Meanwhile, the UK government said on Sunday it was considering a request from Ecuador to hold talks on the future of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. He has lived in

In the capital Prague, metal flood barriers were being raised to cope with the extra water on the River Vltava. Severe floods caused by days of heavy

rain have left at least seven people dead, and two others in neighbouring Austria. Germany has drafted in the army to help reinforce flood defences in the south.

In the Bavarian town of Passau, floodwaters have now reached a level not seen since the 16th century, making much of

the town inaccessible. In the Czech Republic, a nationwide state of emergency is in force, with water levels expected to peak later on Tuesday. The Charles Bridge – normally packed with tourists – has been closed and tigers at the city's zoo were even tranquilised and moved out of an

Dozens die in poultry plant fire

a fire at a poultry processing plant in dehui in Jilin province early on Monday has killed at least 119 people. Xinhua news agency said the plant's front gate was locked when the blaze began, and other official media reports said there was only one unlocked door in the whole building. a labour activist said it was the worst factory fire in living memory, and the country's deadliest fire since 2000, when 309 people died in a blaze in a dance hall in Luoyang, in Henan province. about 100 workers had managed to escape the fire. Firefighters have still not completed the job of recovering bodies from the building, and the death toll is expected to rise.

enclosure thought to be at risk. North of Prague, further downstream, the River Elbe is rising to levels approaching those seen in 2002, the last time Europe experienced similar floods. Seventeen people were killed in the Czech Republic then and the cost of the damage across the continent was estimated at €20 billion.

Judges at the New South Wales Court of appeal have ruled that people do not have to be registered as a man or a woman on the register of births, deaths and marriages, overturning an earlier decision that a person's sex could not be listed as "non-specific" under australian law. Their decision has implications for people who have undergone gender reassignment surgery, as well as those who are "intersex" – having characteristics of both sexes – or consider themselves gender neutral. The appeal was brought by a 50-year-old activist from Sydney called Norrie, who identifies as being gender neutral. SWITzERLaNd

New quotas for EU workers Quotas on the number of EU citizens working have come into effect for one year. Switzerland, which is not an EU member, says immigration has reached unacceptable levels, with foreigners making up a quarter of the population. The jobless rate is less than 3% but there is concern about a growing influx of workers from poorer EU members.

Official figures show that the number of people arriving in the country had exceeded the number leaving by up to 80,000 in recent years. From June 1st, immigrants from Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic will have the number of long-term residence permits capped at 2,180. From the same date, long-term residence permits for the 17 older EU states will be capped at 53,700 for 12 months. Immigration from Bulgaria and Romania is severely restricted.

Britain to clamp down on lobbying with new register The British Government is to bring forward new rules on lobbying following a weekend during which three peers and one MP were forced to step down following allegations they were seeking to profit from their positions. Cabinet office minister Francis Maude said the Government could introduce a statutory register of lobbyists by the end of the year. And Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg also confirmed that anti-sleaze reforms had not been abandoned.

Mr Clegg wrote in the Daily Telegraph: “I know that the absence of the register from last month’s Queen’s Speech raised some concerns. So let me be clear, it will happen. Having consulted on the proposal, the detail is being looked at thoroughly in Government.” Mr Clegg said that the latest revelations, which involved video footage, were not surprising and were a symptom of the current political system which needed head-to-toe reform.

Fair Trade policy at Deco Home Deco-Home, which was founded in 2004, imports handicrafts, decor and furniture from Bali, including Indonesia and Thailand.

Fair Trade

As globalisation increases the gap between rich and poor, small producers are trying in vain to pull out all the stops working to exhaustion, often in conditions akin to slavery in the hope of carving a place in a market dominated by multi-nationals. Claude, back from a six-month trip with his motor bike, has travelled these countries to search for beautiful and original craft, using a fair trade policy. Deco-Home's products come directly from the local village artisans and not from large factories or international dealers. They are committed to supporting indigenous cultures by utilising Fair Trade principles which include the payment of fair living wages, supporting environmentally sustainable projects, respecting cultural identity, promoting safe and healthy working conditions and discouraging forced and exploitive child labour. Fair Trade is a way of doing business that is ethically and environmentally responsible – making free trade work for those in developing nations and in poverty.

Kellogg’s celebrates seventy-five years

Kellogg’s, the world’s biggest breakfast cereal producer, is celebrating 75 years of selling its products, which include Rice Crispies and Corn Flakes.

The British munch their way through a staggering 2.8-million bowls of Kellogg’s cereals every day and purchase eight packets every second. The firm says its products can be found in 85 per cent of UK homes. Globally, Kellogg’s is the world’s leading cereal producer with products sold in 180 countries. It all began by accident when a batch of uncooked wheat was left out in the sun for a couple of days. Manchester was chosen as the site for the first factory and today it is the largest cereal plant in the world and employs over 1,000 people. Official

supplier of breakfast cereal to the Queen, Kellogg’s is famous for its marketing

campaigns and The Beatles and Rolling Stones have featured on its packets.

Local News No freedom for Dolores Vázquez Fourteen years after a murder she did not commit, Dolores Vazquez lives in exile in a small town east of London, where she works for a transport company managing the drivers' timetables. If the wife of the real killer of Rocio Wanninkh – Tony King – had not provided the vital evidence that saved her, Vazquez would be just ending a 15-year jail sentence.

Some weeks ago she visited Madrid to address an audience of jurists, judges, prosecutors and lawyers at a seminar organised by the Pombo Foundation, the Carlos III University and the Walters Kluwer Foundation about the presumption of

your

innocence and wrongful imprisonment. She only spoke for five minutes to deliver her bitter message that no-one – the person who wrongly insisted she'd killed Rocio or the members of the legal profession who believed her or the police who didn't investigate the case as they should have – had ever asked her to forgive them.

It was a harrowing experience from which she has never fully recovered and the State still owes €62,280 for the 519 days she should not have spent in jail. She tried to make a life for herself in Spain until she realised that she was only offered jobs because of her notoriety – people would queue at a

bar, restaurant or hotel to see a "murderess". So she left the country for the anonymity of a small town near London, where she intends to live out the rest of her life.

For her, she told the seminar, it is almost as bad as being in jail.

Why it is advisable to use a solicitor when you buy or sell a property

Commonly, people see a lawyer as someone who solves problems, rather than someone who can avoid them before they happen. Unfortunately, as often occurs, a client who has already signed a sales contract, then comes to us to solve a problem. This client would have saved a lot of time and expense if the appropriate legal advice from a professional, had been sought beforehand. Of all of the professionals involved in a sale or a purchase, the lawyer is the only person who can advise a client and safeguard their interests.

AVENIDA DE LA TORRE, C.C BENALMADENA - MALAGA URB. TORREMUELLE (NEXT TO THE BRITISH COLLEGE)

The intervention of a lawyer can, in many cases, actually make huge savings, especially in cases where the risks involved in an operation are not apparent.

Generally, the cost for the services and legal assistance of a lawyer are around 1 to 1.5% of the sale/purchase price of the property – not really a high amount when you consider the costs that could be incurred if there were any unforeseen problems during the process. The range of possible problems is extensive. Any single one could be enough to cripple the process of a sale or purchase, and in some cases even make it impossible. Now, in the present market conditions where there is a shortage

of buyers and an oversupply of properties, someone in Spain with legal experience and knowledge in this field is essential.

The failure to complete a real estate transaction implies various expenses and disappointment for all parties involved, through time devoted to research; travel; analysis; and commitment, and, no compensation is received by anyone if the transaction folds. More often than not the reason for the collapse of a sales transaction can be put down to a legal issue which could have been avoided if a skilled professional had been contracted in time. A professional lawyer would have foreseen the possibility of a problem beforehand, and would have been able to remedy it before it was too late. Or if he saw that the operation was not feasible he would be able to cancel it, and avoid incurring more unnecessary costs.

New step to ease way for terminal patients

Three years after the Junta de Andalucia enacted legislation to make death more dignified, it has announced the creation of a document called Advanced Care Planning which will function like a living will, in which doctors can record each patient’s personal healthcare preferences for the final moments of their lives.

There are around 150,000 registered living wills in Spain, of which 24,290 are in Andalusia, where the register is consulted on average three times a day. But doctors are now treating terminal patients who did not

stipulate their preferences ahead of time, or if they did, used a standard model that only sets out very vague preferences. This standard form was frequently filled out and signed when disease was just a possibility over the horizin, with the result that the text is too imprecise.

Health Commissioner, María Jesús Montero, told reporters last week: “We believe we need to go a step further, and ensure that all patients who wish to can receive all the necessary information regarding their disease, so we can treat them according to their preferences.”

Advanced Care Planning was developed in the United States in the mid-1990s and today it is a health management tool in Australia, New Zealand and Britain as well.

The Andalusian department of health has published its own guidelines for health professionals, who are expected to start using the document in the coming weeks.

The project will “always be voluntary” for patients, the commissioner said. Doctors will now offer the option to their patients, who are free to accept or

reject it. Sra Montero said that ideally advanced health planning should be offered to anyone, but special care will be taken to discuss the option with patients 75 years and older, those at high risk of heart disease or stroke, and those with neurodegenerative, respiratory, cancer or cardiovascular diseases. She said the document will reflect general preferences (degree of acceptable deterioration of awareness, desired place of death and pain management) besides more specific ones like refusal to undergo surgery or organ donation.

Another 17 tons of hashish seized The war against drug traffickers continues unabated. The most recent seizure involved a fishing boat with no flag which one Coastguard said looked like a pirate ship. It was spotted off the Malaga

coast by an air patrol as bundles of drug were transferred from another ship to the fishing boat. It was in very poor condition, manned by 14 crew – all Egyptians, including two minors –

and had no navigation instruments on board. However, the tax office officials who boarded the boat found 654 bales of hashish weighing between 25 and 30 kilos each, amounting to a total 17

Three meals a day

This week, the Junta de andalucia began to implement its plan to make sure schoolchildren from poor families receive three meals a day. The distribution of breakfast packs containing fruit juice or milkshake, biscuits and a piece of fruit and an afternoon snack consisting of a "bocadillo" were distributed to 11,000 children in more than 70 schools in the Seville area. The programme will be extended in the autumn to some 48,000 schoolchildren across the region. The children already enjoy a midday meal at their schools and soon all of them will have their three-meals-a-day at school as promised by the Junta earlier this year.

Beach attendants get a uniform

People will no longer have to work out who is in charge of renting out the hammocks and chairs on the town's beaches because as of this week they will be easy to spot. The uniform consists of a white shirt, blue shorts and a white cap and the attendants will also wear an ID giving their name, NIe number, the name of the beach and the section in which they work. It is part of a programme to standardise the services such as information and lifeguards on the town's beaches, which will eventually be extended to all the beaches along the Costa del Sol.

More mafiosos arrested

Four men have been arrested in Marbella as part of a four-year long operation against the Napolitan Camoora being carried out jointly by the Guardia Civil and Italy's arma de Carabinieri, simultaneously in the two countries. So far some 100 people have been arrested, 30 of them in Spain. The men arrested in Marbella belong to the Polverino Clan and are allegedly involved in drug trafficking and money laundering. One of the clan's most wanted capos, Giuseppe Polverino, was arrested in Jerez de la Frontera last year, two years after his right hand man, Fabio allegro, was arrested in Malaga.

Shifting sands

I

don't know if it's just my imagination but I get the impression that the Left is actually beginning to act in a slightly more responsible way these days, or could they just be getting into a holiday mood?

O

Cayo Lara

n the one hand we have United Left boss Cayo Lara trying to act like a statesman, after telling his people they must start preparing themselves to hold power in the not-too-distant future. He's no longer sneering at the opinion polls, as the Left usually does, because the most recent ones have indicated that the United Left could hold the balance of power after the next election. Given the Socialist Party's drastic performance in recent years, the polls suggest that disillusioned Socialists will either vote for the United Left or Union, Progress and Democracy in the 2015 general election. One poll predicted another massive blow for the Socialist Party, forecasting that it will get less than 80 seats, with the United Left getting 50 and the UP&D getting 30. But that still leaves the Partido Popular with a similar majority to the one it has right now. I suspect Lara is counting on the Socialists to self-destruct by then and that he'll pick up a lot more seats.

H

owever, we have the United Left propping up the Socialists here in Andalucia, where there could be some interesting developments in the near future. The judge investigating the ERE scandal has just released all the documents pertaining to the amount of money diverted illegally from the fund to help companies downsize to the trade unions, Junta officials and private individuals. The documents were released this morning so I haven't had time to find out the details but it looks as if this could

turn out to be the granddaddy of all corruption scandals – and not one member of the Partido Popular seems to be involved. The Socialist Party, which has ruled Andalucia since 1981, has always made sure that the PP never got so much as a crumb. If the scandal is as bad as it would seem to appear, the United Left will have to hastily disown the Socialists and abandon the Junta if they want to stay "pure", or go down with it. It will be interesting to see which way it jumps. I suspect it will want to stay pure so we could be going to the polls in the not-too-distant future. With the ERE muck out in the open, the Socialist Party in Madrid can't go on pretending they don't know what's going on down here and the PP will be only too pleased to remind them at every opportunity.

D

epending who is doing the talking, we are either seeing the light at the end of the tunnel or there is a long road ahead before there is a clear signal that things just might get back to normal. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says that the jobless figure – 98,265 less people unemployed in May compared to April – is an encouraging sign. But Brussels continues to focus on the need for Spain to put more people back to work. The latest unemployment number is indeed good news, but as Socialist leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba posted Tuesday on Twitter: “We still have a lot of work to do because after summer comes winter.” Summer in Spain has always seen a thriving job market while the unemployment lines get long again when people start pulling out their winter coats.

T

A

I

B

he general theory right now is that the two-party system will soon be dead in the water in Spain, unless the Socialist Party can get its act together. There are no signs of that happening yet but we still have a way to go, and if a fortnight is a long time in politics, two and a half years is an eternity. So anything could happen between now and November 2015 – the latest date that Mariano Rajoy can call a general election. suspect that Lara's hopes of becoming a kingmaker will be dashed. The United Left did well in the 1986 election, a year after it was founded, but has gone gradually downhill ever since. It was down to two seats in 2008. However, in 2011, many Socialists on the left wing of the party were totally disillusioned so they voted for the more hard-line United Left. UP&D, founded by former Socialist MEP Rosa Diez, also benefitted from this desertion.

B

ut the 11 seats it won in Andalucia in the March 2011 regional election seems to have gone to Cayo Lara's head, hence his belief that he will hold the balance of power in 2015. However, if the Socialist Party hasn't sorted itself out by then I suspect many will vote for the UP&D, which is less radical than the United Left and whose leader is less blinkered, less dogmatic and more intelligent – as well as more savvy – than Cayo Lara.

A

nd they're all underestimating a very cunning Gallego called Mariano Rajoy who's looking very happy about the biggest drop in unemployment registered in the month of May since 1996. But more on that next week.

t the end of the month, European leaders will meet in Brussels to discuss putting a formula into action designed to put young people back to work and stimulate growth in 23 countries where the jobless figure has reached more than 25 per cent. But not all nations agree that others should benefit from this scheme while some may remain out of the loop without similar measures to help their frail economies.

ack in Spain, the Socialists have offered to form a pact with Rajoy before he goes to Brussels in an effort to demonstrate to European leaders that there is a united front in this country ready to demand stimuli packages. Last week the prime minister welcomed Rubalcaba’s offer but there are some clear divisions within the PP. Secretary general María Dolores de Cospedal is suspicious – she believes the Socialists have not been upfront and want something big in return. Well, this is politics; a true give-andtake art form of bargaining. Without saying what he wants, the Socialist leader has made it clear that a national pact with the PP would not include any concessions to the government’s proposed labour and educational reforms. Those two areas are off limits and would have to be negotiated in parliament.

S

o what do we have? Divisions on the larger stage where some of the wealthy EU nations again appear not too keen on designing a plan for growth that would strengthen the bloc while at the same time there are rifts on the local front with some members of the two parties resistant to any type of pact to hold Spain together.

Everything points to the fact that we are heading back to square one – the same absurd discontent that surfaces anytime somebody in this continent or country hints at coming up with a consensus to move a stick in the mud. It is no wonder the European Commission and groups like the International Labour Organisation and the Organisation for Economic and Development Co-operation continue to issue negative reports on Spain. Maybe it is their way of trying to prod stubborn cattle into action.

T

his situation has lasted longer that it should, and we cannot continue on this route. There are literally hundreds of thousands of people across Europe living below the poverty line, and radical movements fester in some nations, prepared to get a grip on power. Just by looking at all the statistics on Spain, not just the unemployment figures, there is nothing there to support the belief that everything appears encouraging. The only comforting move would be for nations and the local parties to come together and take the bull by the horns. Reforms have been made in Spain but they are not enough because the type of changes that have been introduced are designed to tighten the screws among citizens while leaving the entire political spectrum – which is in dire need of restructuring – intact. There is nothing encouraging about the changes made so far because they don't go to the heart of the problem.

Have you been fined? Línea Directa reports on new legislation for paying fines. On March 4th this year, new legislation governing the payment of fines for traffic offences was introduced in Spain. According to the new law, drafted and passed by the Spanish DirectorateGeneral of Traffic (Dirección General de Tráfico) and the Ministry of the Interior, the payment of traffic fines in cash will no longer be accepted, and only payment by debit or credit card will be allowed. The authorities have cited security and economic efficiency as the reasons behind their decision due to the fact that once this new measure has been introduced, the risks and expenses involved with transporting money, will no longer exist.

According to the DGT, the measure will only apply to the payment of fines. All the other administrative operations carried out at Provincial Traffic Headquarters, such as processing or renewing a driving licence, can still be paid for in cash. In order to make the payment, drivers must access the DGT webpage, www.dgt.es, or call the number 060. Although Provincial Headquarters will no longer accept payments in cash, drivers can still pay their fines in cash at any post office or Banco Santander branch. In this case, drivers will still be required to provide and attach the fine reference number. For further information call 902 123 104.

Encarna Daunis, a lawyer and representative from the Centro de Mujer & Social Services, stressed the importance of including as much information as possible when making a ‘denuncia’, or official complaint, to the police. She asked victims to take their time when making the police report and to include specific details about their situation including their living conditions as well as their mistreatment.

Both the National Police and the Guardia Civil operate an electronic tag system similar to that in the UK, allowing the police to keep track of offenders with restraining orders in place. The police forces said they work closely together to protect victims of domestic violence, and operate a sophisticated programme in order to assess each case of domestic violence and its level of danger. Some 400 electronic tags are in operation for offenders of gender or domestic violence, with 26 of the bracelets being used in the Malaga province. Ali Meehan from Costa Women, a social and business network, wanted to remind victims that there is a network of support available and they do not have to live a life of violence.

Rosslyn Crotty rounded up the event, saying: “If you or anyone you know needs assistance relating to domestic or gender violence, call 900 200 999, 016 where English speaking support is available.”

Rosslyn added afterwards: “Domestic violence is unacceptable in Britain and unacceptable here. The Spanish police have a ‘zero tolerance’ attitude. I would encourage victims to have confidence that a complaint to them will be taken seriously. There are also a whole range of organisations ready to help and offer support.”

From La Risa – apart from the obvious of bottles of spirits (high end names only!) and wine, plus cash – the thieves also took all the stock of chocolate. But most diabolical of all is the fact that they took the collection tins for both Cudeca and the SOS animal charities.

We know times are hard but… charity boxes? Is nothing sacred these days? ... Give it back!! On a better note, the La Risa 5th birthday party is confirmed for Saturday July 27th and you can read more about it over the next few weeks on our Out & About pages.

Bloomsday Bathe on the Beach for the third year in Fuengirola For the third year we are planning a simple reading, swim or paddle off the beach in Fuengirola on Bloomsday which conveniently falls on a Sunday this year. What makes our event a little different is that the readers are encouraged to read their pieces in their own language.

This is a fun, non-

intellectual, non threatening event – a get together providing the opportunity to become fully immersed in – sea water. And it is FREE. All that is required is that you turn up on time to participate. It will be a memorable occasion. Bloomsday – June 16th – is an annual celebration

among James Joyce fans throughout the world, from Fuengirola to Melbourne. It is celebrated in at least sixty countries worldwide, but nowhere so imaginatively, of course, as in Dublin. The novel, Ulysses, by James Joyce recounts the hour-by-hour events of one day in Dublin – June 16, 1904 – as an ordinary Dubliner,

varieties of costumes, hats and beachwear.

Leopold Bloom, wends his way through the urban landscape, the odyssey of a modern-day Ulysses.

Join us for a little reading of Ulysses and a paddle/swim on Bloomsday, Sunday, 16th June, 2013, on the beach in Fuengirola (“X” marks the spot where we meet!) The timetable for the day is as follows:

www.thenewsonline.es

07.45: Beach assembly. In front of the Hotel Florida. 08:00: Divest and dive into “the snot green scrotum tightening sea” – heated by the Spanish summer sunshine. 08:30: Readings (all readings will be about one page long) lead off by those present followed by voluntary readings by likeminded male and female participants in their own language wearing

10:00: Had enough? OK, then lets swim, dip or paddle again before adjourning to the local Chiringito (La Cepa Playa) for toast, olive oil, coffee and chat.

“Mr Leopold Bloom ate with relish the inner organs of beasts and fowls. He liked thick giblet soup, nutty gizzards, a stuffed roast heart, liver slices fried with crustcrumbs, fried hencods’ roes. Most of all he liked grilled mutton kidneys which gave to his palate a fine tang of faintly scented urine.” – James Joyce, Ulysses. Written by Roger Cummiskey

Film in English

The next, much awaited, film at the La Trocha cinema in Coin will be 'The Hangover III' showing on Monday 10th June at 6.30pm and Thursday 13th June at 8.30pm. Times are provisional and will be confirmed on the Coinlife website.

"The Hangover Part III" is the third and final film in director Todd Phillips' record-shattering comedy franchise. This time, there's no wedding, no bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off.

Jazz it up at Pógs Mijas this weekend

Pógs in Fuengirola has a good reputation as one of the best pub-rock bars around. Not so well known is that it is also a bit of a Jazz hub and, until recently the Open Jazz Session was always on a Thursday night, but that has just changed to a Wednesday. Easy going, the session – under the loose guidance of jazz drummer Javilon and often guitarist Carlos Pino – is open to all jazz musicians to play and aficionados to enjoy. With so many styles of jazz there is no particular fixed genre, the way the evening runs all depends on who drops in – it’s all jazz. On holiday with no instrument? No problem, there are mics and amps, a piano, double bass, a guitar or two and usually

access to a saxophone as well as other miscellaneous musical appurtenances . Likewise with the Open Session, for the last two years this has been consistently on a Wednesday night. A change is as good as rest so now it's on Thursday. As with the jazz night, it attracts all types, from well seasoned men of the blues to younger kids hot to trot and rock and everyone in between. Some musical instruments are also available so

Headed up by guitarist and singer Alice Reay, who herself started performing at Pógs as a teenager, along with all-round and talented musician Carl Parry (left) and bass player Luis Rivas (below) they provide the impetus and backdrop to The Pógs Thursday Open Session, It's Spain, and both sessions do start late, the Jazz around 10.00 to 10.30 and Alice around 11.00 but they are both good and worth the effort. Pógs is easy to find on Calle Lamo Espinosa near the PYR Hotel just of Fuengirola seafront.

Sometimes it seems that people who live on the coast think that nothing much happens inland but over the last week the town of Coin has come into its own – and in a big way! On Wednesday evening of last week, The Olive Tree had a Rod Stewart tribute. The place was packed and the show started at 9.30pm. And what a show it was! From Maggie May and Sailing, to I Don’t Want To Talk About It, to the unforgettable Have I Told You Lately, people were singing along, clapping, dancing and generally having a great time. Shouts of “More!” went on for some time at the end of the evening but, unfortunately, all good things have to come to an end. We just hope he’ll come back soon. Then on Friday night, the show “Encore” was

equally enjoyed by a packed crowd. At almost opposite ends of the music spectrum this show is a tribute to the Three Tenors with opera sounds from The Pearl Fishers to show songs such as “And All That Jazz” that had people once again on their feet shouting for more. So, with two such successful nights under their belts, why stop? Well, the truth is that they’re not stopping which is brilliant news for local residents who were missing their live music venue since JK’s closed, and for people who want to travel the short distance up to party with the rest of us. So, what’s coming up? Tomorrow night, Thursday June 6th there’s a Tom Jones / Neil Diamond Tribute. On Saturday 8th, the inimitable Frankie B is

back with his smooth sounds from Motown and soul. Thursday 13th George Michael tribute hits town so pop along and dance the night away. Friday 14th has the rock band Avant Garde. Saturday 15th sees the return of Southern Impact while on Friday 21st we’re all in for a treat with The Jersey Boys (entry for this event is €10 each). Thanks to the hard work of Tina, Dave and Louise, this inland venue is proving to be incredibly popular so, if you want to have a table, early booking is recommended. Oh yes, and the food is very good too! For more information call The Olive Tree on 665 340 306 and take a look at their advert on page 16. by Kym Wickham

Simply great fish & chips!

It seems that a lot of the articles this week in Out and About are to do with inland events but, if they do it well, why not? So, this weekend during the daytime there’s a real treat for residents and tourists alike. The Coin Romeria takes place on Saturday. This is when all the ladies dress up in their best Flamenco dresses (and, believe me, they will be checking each other out to see who is still wearing last year’s model!) including the babies who look oh, so cute in them with their little flamenco shoes to match their dresses. The boys of course are not to be outdone and fathers and sons will be kitted out in the most wonderful riding suits complete with sombreros. The peñas meet in the feria ground to form the procession of hundreds of pilgrims that starts from the Alameda square at the top of the town at around 10am. They then wend their way for several hours to the Ermita 5km out the town, where the Virgen de la Fuensanta holds court in the small chapel. Religious fervour, colours, dancing, horses, ox carts, loud music and booze are the order of the day. This is one not to be missed!

n April of this year the remake of “Evil Dead” was released. Now I really would like to see the remake, but there is part of me that doesn’t. Some things are just sacred and should not be poked – that said, I am going to try my very best to be fair when I do eventually get round to seeing it.

Directed by Marc Forster Starring: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Matthew Fox

With a lavish budget and big bang special effects there’s a lot riding on this movie. Will it be this year’s biggest blockbuster earning mega-money for Paramount? Or will it be this year’s John Carter, the movie that lost Disney $200 million and cost some executives their jobs? Some critics are asking whether it’s pronounced ‘Zee’, ‘Zed’ or ZZZZ ... the sound of the audience. The Z actually stands for zombie and you’ll find thousands of them – living

dead swarming through Jerusalem or coming up from the subways of Philadelphia like a mass of lively and very dangerous insects. Pitt plays Gerry Lane, a former UN enforcer recalled to the front line when a mysterious plague (what else) starts to sweep through countries around the world, turning their populations into tottering living corpses. The plot is based on the novel by Max Brooks (son of Mel) which made satirical references to big governments,

conspiracy theories and America’s foreign policy. The general view is that none of this has made the big screen and Forster (who helmed the hard to understand or warm to Quantum of Solace) has produced a straightforward race against time to save humanity thriller.

The movie went through some re-shooting after it was wrapped, and then the final scenes were re-written and re-shot so maybe some Paramount execs were looking over

Flight

their shoulders. With a budget well in excess of $200 million it needs to go some at the box office. Gerry travels around the world tracking outbreaks and searches for common denominators and clues to help produce a cure. There’s no evidence to suggest why he is the right man for the job, but who cares? It’s Brad Pitt back in action in a movie full of big set pieces and impressive special effects – perfect summer season viewing for those who like zombies!

T

his year is turning out loads of “classic” remakes, which is not entirely a good thing. I say “classic”, but perhaps they are better classified as cult. Recently we’ve had “The Great Gatsby” – I haven’t seen it, read lots of mixed reviews, Redford vs DiCaprio, not really a contest, right? – and to come “Carrie”. This is going to be interesting, how can anyone improve a Brian De Palma film? “Star Trek: Into Darkness” – yes, you trekkies, it is a remake, there is and will only ever be one Khan!

S

ometimes a remake is good, it’s like a fresh coat of paint on an old house, but if it’s done wrong, well it’s like someone painting your house Barbie pink. It’s ghastly to look at and offends the senses. The perfect example of this is any of the following remakes, “Alfie”, “Get Carter”, “The Italian Job”, “The Wicker Man”, “The Pink Panther” – need I go on?

A

performance is being hailed as "a triumph" and one that "will be talked about for years".

s I mentioned earlier, some things are sacred and “Evil Dead” is one of them, and I will tell you why. Way back in 1981, Sam Raimi not only made his first feature length film, but one of the most cult horror films of all time.

I

f a survey was held among true Horror fans, this film would certainly be one of the most frequent titles in the top ten. And for

good reasons, as this low budget masterpiece is one of the most simply amazing Horror films ever produced. And Raimi and his crew shot this with an incredibly low budget. "Evil Dead" accomplishes what hardly another film has. This is easily one of the scariest, creepiest, simply terrifying Horror/Gore films ever made. Even though this is one of the films that epitomize the term Horror, it is also witty and hilariously funny at times, which is something unique for a film as scary as this one.

A

t the time of its release, the film was heavily bashed by critics for its extreme violence and gore, and censored and banned in several countries. If anything, however, the repulsion of censors and some critics helped the film achieve an instant cult status. Bruce Campbell became one of the most celebrated Horror/B-movie cult-actors, and "The Evil Dead" has since long been recognized as a milestone of the Horror genre.

S

o, here we are 32 years later with a $17 million dollar budget, immensely improved special effects and I wonder: “Could this remake beat the original?” The answer is, I seriously doubt it. Look what happened to the remake of “Nightmare on Elm St.”. If you decide to go and see the new “Evil Dead”, whatever you do, don’t try and compare it to the original, just think of it as a proper horror film, because there is no way it’s going to be a cult and the original wasn’t really horror. Actually, just think you’re watching a lame horror film, that just happens to have the same title – that way you won’t be disappointed.

Your strength is returning with vigour and you will be feeling right on top of your game. You will have to remember that others will have a hard time keeping up with you or having the wherewith all to keep up with your intensity. Take the time to be extra patient with your loved ones because the sheer power of your words can knock another sideways at the moment. Your imagination and creativity is at an all time high, great for focusing on the tasks at hand Others will find you a magnet this week and your social connections will really start to kick in. It all stems from the air of confidence that you have about you right now. It is a great time to take total advantage of opportunities that are available to you, all it takes is some simple communication, make sure that you listen carefully and keep the mood light, hearing their ideas and suggestions. The people that can bring you success are turning up in your life. Your inner passions and sensuality are ignited at full strength and there is no not much that you cannot accomplish under this influence. All of this has been fuelled by the intensity of the previous weeks leaving you under no illusion of the direction you personally wish your life to proceed in. Financial opportunities are on the horizon, perhaps there are new careers in the offing or long distance travel could draw you – adventures await. An inner confidence is growing within you that allows you to feel as though you have it all under control, well able to handle anything that comes your way. You are thriving and keen to succeed regardless of any obstacles that come your way. The powers of attraction that you exude will attract many towards you, all that you do is noticed and you will create a radical new interest. Use the fire within you to get things completed. A brand new day is dawning for you, the heavy emotional turbulence of your past gives way to a much brighter view and perspective. It is as if you are being renewed and even though there have been opportunities all around you in the past, perhaps they were not recognised for what they were. With this renewed optimism you will feel well able to forge new alliances and connections letting go of the disappointments of a bygone era. There are probably internal battles between the mind and the emotions going on and you will find that you get moody or down and you do not know why, this reaction is a distraction from the real problem and sooner or later you will have to realise that the old ways will no longer work for you. Others expected you to sort things out when they made a mistake and make everything ok, but that has changed, you are now the leader, the days of being hidden are over.

What is it you really want from life? Once you can answer this question you will be able to plan and attend the events and make the pathway needed to get you there. Making sure your foundation is solid and your basic needs are being met is where your focus tends to be right now. Listen to your gut instincts as they are spot on and make sure that you observe others, as many clues for direction will come from ‘seeing’ what is going on around you.

You have reached a level of popularity whereby everyone who is anyone knows your name. Although this is great for the ego, it also means others will be holding you to much higher standards too. Take the time to listen more carefully to what others are saying and hold back from impulsive reactive outbursts unless vital. Miscommunications can occur quite easily, however, the smallest of gestures can put it all right and bring joy to others.

There is no time to sit and stare this week as there is a need to take control and get things done, the days of sitting on the fence are over, you are fired up and know what you want, so make sure that you do the chores and tasks that will get you where you want to be. Distractions can be your biggest downfall right now. Get busy Capricorn; roll up your sleeves, although this seems dull, the bigger picture ensures that there will be a radical increase in status and wealth. It is time to release the past and get over any of the negativity that has continued to drag you down and mess with your head. There is a need to be much more gentle and understanding with yourself as your own expectations may be way too high. New beginnings are near and it is for this reason that you need to think things through very carefully before jumping into action, make sure you keep an eye on your personal finances as this caution will benefit your future. Very deep emotional overtones are working on you and this can cause you to question your current as well as past choices and decisions. The thing is people generally do the best they can with the choices that present themselves at any time, so release any negativity and embrace the bright future that is ahead of you. Negativity is a strong emotion that can seduce a person with a false sense of power, remember that you are in a leadership position and allow yourself to take charge.

Diagnosis of death reviewed

A leading UK doctor has called for an international agreement on when and how death is diagnosed.

At a European meeting of anaesthetists he said improvements in technology mean the line between life and death is less clear.

In the majority of cases in hospitals, people are pronounced dead only after doctors have examined their heart, lungs and responsiveness,

determining there are no longer any heart and breath sounds and no obvious reaction to the outside world. But Dr Alex Manara, a consultant anaesthetist at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, said more than 30 reports in medical literature, describing people who had been determined dead but later found to be alive, had

Lords

driven scientists to question whether the diagnosis of death can be improved. He said that on some occasions doctors do not observe the body for long enough before someone is declared dead.

Many institutions in the US and Australia have adopted two minutes as the minimum observation

period, while the UK and Canada recommend five minutes. Germany currently has no guidelines and Italy proposes that physicians wait 20 minutes before declaring death, particularly when organ donation is being considered.

At the conference, Ricard Valero, professor of anaesthesia at the University of Barcelona, considered the rarer scenario of patients in intensive care units whose hearts and lungs are kept functioning by machines. In such scenarios, doctors use the concept of brain

death – often conducting neurological tests to monitor any brain activity in the patient. But the criteria used to establish brain death have slight variations across the globe.

For example, in Canada one doctor is needed to diagnose brain death; in the UK, two doctors are recommended; and in Spain three doctors are required. The number of neurological tests that have to be performed vary too, as does the time the body is observed before death is declared.

"These variations in

practice just do not seem logical," Prof Valero said. Dr Nolan said: "In principle an international guideline on death is a very good idea. It is likely to help in terms of the movement of doctors between countries and, importantly, with public confidence. "Italians and Brits are probably built in the same way. It makes sense to have the same criteria for death for both."

The World Health Organisation has begun work to develop a global consensus.

Younger breast cancer patients need different approach

A lack of clinical trials aimed at younger breast cancer patients could be partly to blame for longerterm survival problems, according to a study funded by Cancer Research UK and the Wessex Cancer Trust.

Researchers analysed nearly 3,000 women under 40 in the UK with diagnosed breast cancer and found a rapid rise in relapse after five years in younger patients with a certain type of the cancer. This contrasts with what normally happens with the disease. The researchers said: "This study adds to the evidence that breast cancer can behave very differently when diagnosed in younger women. "They may require a

different approach to treatment, which isn't necessarily understood from cancer trials in older patients."

A spokeswoman for Cancer Research UK said: "Although in general breast cancer survival has improved dramatically in recent decades, with women now twice as likely to survive their disease for at least 10 years compared to those diagnosed in the 1970s, the same can't be said for younger breast cancer patients."

Actress and mother of six Angelina Jolie made her first public appearance since surgery

And doesn’t she look amazing!

… at the London Premier of partner Brad’s film the actress thanked fans for their support

Sunday was the day for two premiers in the life of Angelina Jolie.

The first was to walk the black (yes that’s right, black, not red) carpet for her partner Brad Pitt’s new film World War Z. The second was to appear for the first time since surgery for a double mastectomy earlier this year. Angelina Jolie, 37, had been told that she carried the hereditary gene BRCA1 that meant that she was highly likely to die from the breast cancer that had claimed the lives of her mother and aunt. Pitt and Jolie have six children together – Maddox,

Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne.

"Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as many others like her, absolutely heroic," Pitt, 49, said in a statement following Jolie's announcement. "I thank our medical team for their care and focus." And for Angelina’s part she wrote in a statement following her mastectomies and reconstructive surgeries: "I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity." No-one could deny that the actress looked the picture of

health as she smiled at the cameras and fans lining the route in her floor length black, backless, Saint Laurent gown. Jolie said: "I've been very happy just to see the discussion about women's health expanded and that means the world to me." For millions of women all over the world that are faced with similar decisions, seeing Ms Jolie strutt her stuff in that kind of a dress will take away a lot of the fear about what they could look like after mastectomy. She just goes to prove that this disease can be beaten and in a very beautiful way. Well done, Angelina!

Doors’ keyboard player dies Kate’s peachy Ray Manzarek, a founding member of 1960s rock group The Doors, has died at the age of 74. The keyboard player died in Rosenheim, Germany, with his family at his bedside following a battle with bile duct cancer.

He and singer Jim Morrison formed The Doors in 1965 after a chance meeting at Venice Beach in Los Angeles.

The Doors' original lineup, which also included drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robbie Krieger, was only together for a few years and made just six studio albums. But the band retained a large and obsessive following long after Morrison's death, aged 27, in 1971 of a suspected heart attack.

They sold more than 100 million records, with songs such as Light My Fire and Riders On the Storm still considered "classic" rock favourites. Musically, Manzarek's spidery organ on Light My Fire is one of the most instantly recognisable sounds in rock history.

Manzarek and Krieger continued to perform from 2002 with Ian Astbury replacing Morrison on vocals and Stewart Copeland, drummer in The Police, replacing Densmore on drums. Densmore had refused to take part and joined up with Morrison's family to bring a lawsuit against Manzarek and Krieger's use of The Doors name. "I was deeply saddened

to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today," guitarist Krieger said in a statement. "I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."

The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out in a peach lace-over dress for what is to be her last public appearance before the birth of her baby next month. She topped the dress with a three quarter sleeve length tunic coat, matching veiled hat and nude shoes.

Manzarek is survived by his wife, Dorothy, son and three grandchildren.

Looking the picture of cool and comfortable, she attended the celebrations at Westminster Abbey for the Queen’s 60th

Opinion

Mary Jackson

At the end of last year you published an article (which coincided with the loss of the Channel 5 signal) which informed your readers that the BBC,ITV and Channel 4 signal would also be lost and a date in December was given when this would start to take place, however this date came and went with no more channels being lost. Since this time the only information I have read on the matter has been put out by satellite installation companies who appear to have "jumped on the

& Stargazing

Opinion & Comment N 27

WEDNESDAY, June 5th 2013

bandwagon" and made the most of this suspect information to "feather their own nests" – one of the companies is offering an alternative system with one price before the change and another more expensive price after the change. It would be appreciated if you could give your readers an independent update on the current situation because most people I know think that the whole situation has been fabricated by companies with a commercial interest in scaremongering customers to

La Cala

invest in their alternative system.

Editor says: As I understand it, nobody really knows what is going to happen and when. Some companies are experimenting with satellite dishes of all sizes to see what can be picked up and there are, of course, alternative methods of getting TV that can be supplied. However, until and if we all get cut off we cannot give you any further information at this time.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Everything for your pet ... and much more Coin’s new pets supply business is going from strength to strength after only six months. They are building a regular clientele list and with grooming and veterinary services have the complete package for all your pet needs. In fact the first thing you notice in the window of Coin’s new pet supply business is a sign that says… “We absolutely do NOT sell or buy animals!”… … “This is very important to us”, says Claire Hamilton, from Dublin who has lived in Spain 15 years and is coowner of the business. “Like so many of our clients, we have rescued, fostered or rehomed dogs, cats even pigs and horses! For us to see puppies or kittens in cages

all day and night sometimes for months on end is abhorrent. The main thing I have noticed since opening the business at the end of 2012 is how many clients have the same story about rescuing, caring or feeding their own or even their neighbour’s animals. These people, along with all the animal charity volunteers, are the "unsung"heroes and heroines. I shudder to think what the situation would be without all them!” Mascota La Trocha is, of course, based at the Centro Comercial La Trocha in Coin and is extremely convenient for customers as it is in the parking area next to the car wash company and with a large wooden Scooby Doo outside welcoming you in. “You can drive right up to the front door to load heavy bags of dog food or bring your pet for grooming or to our new Veterinary Consultant,” continues Claire. Claire is the professional dog groomer in Scooby Doo Do’s and is well known in the Coin area for grooming over the last 12 years. She also has several years veterinary nursing experience and now with their new vet Juan Francisco Bernal who speaks good English, they can cater for all your veterinary needs. “In these recession times pricing is so important and although we cannot compete with large supermarket chains on some items we can give good advice on what is best for your pet at a budget you can afford! We have or can supply basic economy food

up to the top brand names like Hills/Royal Canin etc, etc, and although we are a small business we can order and receive most items within a few days. We also have an aquarium section of both tropical and cold water fish and all the accessories like pumps, filters and aquariums from traditional goldfish bowls to large tanks and we can even can make you an outside pond!¨ The difference in this pet supply business is the “personal touch” and caring attitude to your pet. “Our pets are family,” says Claire, “What they eat, when they are sick or even how they feel is very important to us.” So for that extra personal service and all your pet requirements including food, treats, toys, cages, collars, hamster, bird and rabbit accessories, grooming, tick and flea treatments and veterinary services call in to Mascota La Trocha on the ground floor (parking area) of the La Trocha Commercial Centre on the Coin to Cartama road. They are also open during the very busy La Trocha Market on a Sunday! Open Monday to Friday 10am to 7pm plus Saturday and Sunday 10am to 2.30pm. Contact them for more information on 634 395 445. Email them on mascotalatrocha@hotmail. com and you can visit their website at www.mascotalatrocha.com for all your pet accessories, supplies, dog grooming and veterinary consultant. Editor says: I use Juan the vet myself and am very happy with his work and my animals’ reaction to him.

Never seen Mercury?

M

If you’ve never seen the planet Mercury then this month is your best chance to spot it.

ercury is the smallest planet in our Solar System and the one closest to the Sun. But because it is the innermost planet it never strays far from the sun in the sky. That’s why it has a reputation for being elusive. It’s always seen in a twilight sky, never overhead at midnight. At western elongation it sets about an hour after the Sun and at eastern elongation it rises about an hour before the Sun. It’s said that only a small percentage of Earth’s population has ever knowingly seen Mercury. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, Mercury’s stint as the evening “star” this month will probably be your last best chance to spot it in the evening sky for the rest of the year.

L

uckily, the brightest of all the planets, Venus, is also up in the west after sunset right next to Mercury and can help guide your eye to Mercury this month. Jupiter is up there too but is closer to the twilight and harder to spot.

B

ecause they are near the bright twilight, you need an unobstructed view of the western horizon in the direction of sunset to see the planets. Look for Jupiter as soon as possible after sunset, using binoculars will help you find it. Look for Venus and Mercury when the sky begins to darken a bit. Some 45 minutes or less after the sun goes down, Venus should be blazing away near the sunset point on the horizon and easily visible. With the eye alone, Mercury appears above Venus. If you have binoculars, aim them at Venus and you’ll find Mercury a bit above Venus, the brilliant evening “star”. The two planets will fit or nearly fit within a single binocular field of view.

J

upiter makes a line, more or less, with the other two planets. But because it’s lower in the sky and so deeper in twilight, you might miss Jupiter. But if you do happen to see a third object closest to the horizon, that’s it! Jupiter will soon disappear in the twilight glare as it orbits around the

B

sun and brings the sun between Jupiter and us.

e sure to try and spot these worlds no later than 45 to 60 minutes after sunset. At midnorthern latitudes, like those in the Spain and the UK, Venus follows the sun beneath the horizon about one and a half hours after sundown. At temperate latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere – like in southern Australia – Venus sets about one hour after the sun.

Y

ou will have to be fairly quick to see this conjunction of Mercury and Venus over the next couple of nights. As Mercury takes only 88 days to orbit the Sun then its position in the sky moves noticeably from one night to the next. It will reach its greatest western elongation i.e. furthest point away from the Sun on June 12th after that it will then begin to move back toward the setting Sun. There will be a final conjunction of Mercury and Venus on 20th June as Mercury once again joins Venus but this time on its way down toward the horizon and into twilight.

T T

ry to watch out for the waxing crescent moon that also joins up with Mercury and Venus after the sun goes down on June 10th. here will be two very good sightings of the International Space Station tonight Wednesday 5th June at 22.05 coming from the Southwest and heading toward the Northeast. If you miss it then try again on Friday night for a better view of it again coming from the Southwest heading toward the Northeast at 22.05. On Friday night it will pass almost directly overhead. Don’t forget to give the astronauts a big wave as it goes past! Happy Stargazing

Lorenzo makes it a Mugello triple win Yamaha's MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo has won the Italian Grand Prix for the third year in a row while team mate Valentino Rossi crashed on the opening lap.

Lorenzo won comfortably from Honda's championship leader and fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa, whose rookie team mate Marc Marquez crashed with two laps to go, shortly after he had moved into second place at Mugello – this also meant that he had failed to complete every session without a crash. Pedrosa now has 103 points, with Lorenzo moving into second place on 91. Marquez, whose crash denied him the chance to become the first rider to finish on the podium in his first five MotoGP races, has 77. Rossi crashed after Spanish Honda rider Alvaro Bautista appeared to clip him as they took the same line going into the third corner. "We crashed; I didn't see anything," Bautista told the BBC. "Just when I went in to enter the corner I felt Rossi's bike and we fell down." Rossi’s version “On the second corner I was on the outside of Alvaro and I think Alvaro opened the throttle to close a bit the line, so that he doesn't lose position. But I was already in front, so he just come into me. He say that he don't see me. It's possible,” shrugged Rossi.

into third place Dani Pedrosa during the closing stages as he came on strong during the secondhalf. “I'm sorry Marc crashed because he was doing an amazing job again but to be honest I felt I could have caught Dani and taken third anyway. When I saw Marc crash I slowed down to not risk losing a

second podium in a row, which is a fantastic achievement for the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team and me. “I'm fourth in the Championship, top nonfactory rider again, so it has been another great way to finish the weekend and continue our very strong start to the season."

Ford joins Europe car-sharing sector as demand surges Ford is the latest manufacturer to offer carsharing in Europe, where demand for the service is expected to surge by the end of the decade. The carmaker joins rivals including PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, Daimler, Toyota and Volkswagen, all of which aim to claim a share of a sector forecast to grow to 15 million users in Europe by 2020 from 700,000 today, according to Frost & Sullivan. The UK, Germany and France likely will account for 60 percent of this enlarged market, with one in three vehicles being powered by batteries rather than an internal combustion engine, the market researchers predict. In a statement, Ford of Germany Chairman Bernhard Mattes said car sharing was an attractive option for some customers. "As a company, we are committed to a collaborative and integrated approach to future mobility, and the Ford2Go service is another

significant step in exploring exactly how that future could look," said Mattes, who is also vice president of Ford's European customer service division. More than 40 percent of car owners now considering joining a carsharing programme would also consider selling their own cars. Meanwhile, a Ford-sponsored survey has found that 56 percent of Europeans say they would consider car-sharing. Car ownership in Europe currently averages around 420 vehicles per 1,000 citizens. Frost & Sullivan has also found

that the majority of today's car-sharing members (53 percent) are under 34, well-educated (67 percent have degrees) and do not currently own a car (51 percent) – fulfilling the profile that carmakers seek as customers. Analysts estimate that the 20,500 cars in European sharing fleets in 2011 replaced at least 250,000 private cars –- one rental car for every 12 private cars.

NEBS Golfers play in glorious sunshine at Lauro Golf Sixteen players and guests of the Los Nebrales Golf Society travelled to Lauro golf to find the course in its normal superb condition. The scores were relatively high and the results were as follows. Nearest the pin on hole 21 Charles Randell, hole 26 Guillermo Buero ( Bill as we call him), hole 2 Andy Macfarlane and hole 4 not claimed. Nearest the pin in two shots on hole 3 Dave Haworth. Longest drive on hole 6, with a massive drive Heikki

Konttinen. The Par three competition was shared by Andy Macfarlane and Charles Randell. Best team score with a very creditable 107 points was Dave Haworth, Dell Allwood, Andy Macfarlane and Charles Randell. Best guest with 25 points was Vic Cloake. In the day’s main competition third place with 33 points on countback was Joe King. In second place with 33 points was The News’

Geoff Heading. In first place with 38 points Charles Randell, well done Charles. In last place with not many points was Bill but to be fair he only plays on the odd occasion. The members would like to thank Tina at The Olive Tree for the food she supplied and also Terry Birtles and Joe King for organising the event. Report by Nig Bowler.

Wayne’s Poker Tips It's been a busy weekend in Sin City with WSOP 2013 and a handful of new events getting started and new bracelet winners. Unfortunately, British player David Vamplew came up just short in event 2, the No-Limit Hold'em/Eight Handed tournament after losing out to Trevor Pope in a heads-up battle that lasted only seven hands.

But the man from Scotland wasn't too disappointed, tweeting about some 'excellent laddering' which netted him $342k for his efforts. Pope had a massive chip advantage as the final table started, so second was a great result for Vamplew.

Event 3, which was a $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em Re-Entry tournament, saw an impressive 3,164 players register and in the end it was Charles Sylvestre who took home the bracelet and the $491k first prize after

defeating Seth Berger heads-up.

Another bracelet winner at this year's WSOP was John Beauprez who took down the $1,500 buy-in NoLimit Hold'em/Six Handed event for $324k. 1,069 entrants took part and ex Main Event champ Joe Cada put in a great performance, finishing in fourth.

The final bracelet winner of the weekend was Mike Gorodinsky who claimed the Omaha/Seven Card Stud Hi-Low 8-or Better title along with a cheque for $217k. Despite a smaller field of only 374, this $2,500 event was packed full of talent with players like George Danzer, Daniel Negreanu and

Mike Matusow all putting in strong performances, but coming up just short.

One of the most anticipated low buy-in events, the "Millionaire Maker" got under way and with a total prize pool of over $8.5 million generated from the 6,343 entrants, 180 players still remain in with a shout of winning the bracelet and becoming this year's first WSOP millionaire.

Currently, Mike Del Vecchio is sitting with the largest chip stack. Event 7, the $1,000 NoLimit Hold'em tournament is also in the closing stages with only 200 of the original 1,837 players remaining. First place can look forward to $306k. The final event to get under way this weekend was the $2,500 EightGame Mix. Always a big favourite with the pros, this specialist event attracted 388 of the game’s top players and after the first day’s play, the field has been halved from 388 down to 188. The winner of this event can expect $225k. As I write Eric Crain is sitting way out in front, but with players like Andy Bloch, Scott Seiver, Amnon Filippi, Gavin Griffin and Phil Ivey hot on his heels anything could still happen.

Neymar joins Barca for €57m

The Brazil striker Neymar completed his move from Santos to Barcelona for £48.6m (57m euros) on Monday. The 21-year-old, who agreed to join the Spanish champions in May, passed his medical and signed a five-year deal. He said: "Money is OK but happiness takes priority. We decided to come to Barcelona. I had a lot of offers but I followed my heart. As well as Real, Neymar had also been linked with Chelsea and Manchester United.

No way back after bad start for Malaga, as Barca make it to 100 in only the 3rd minute. Fabregas linked with Iniesta on the edge of the box to score another after just 14 minutes as Malaga looked ragged in defence. Two minutes later Barca left Malaga with an uphill struggle as they made it three nil with Montoya firing a stunning 20 yard strike from outside the box from a cleared corner. Pique missed an easy header on 40 minutes in what was a perfect first half for Barca.

Barcelona 4 - Malaga 1 After last week’s win over Deportivo that secured European League Football (court hearing pending) it was Manuel Pellegrini´s last game in charge of Malaga at the Camp Nou. It seemed to be the normal bad Malaga start as Barca went looking for the 100 point finish to cap their season. David Villa latched onto a square ball as the Malaga defence went to sleep to fire home

The second half was much better for Malaga, with Morales coming on for Santa Cruz. Baptista came close and Morales forced Alba to clear off the line. After Malaga´s chances a Barca counter attack ended with a great finish for Iniesta on 52 minutes. Just four minutes later Malaga´s Morales latched onto a great Gamez cross to volley the ball superbly in, to give Malaga a glimmer of hope. Baptista

tested Pinto from 40 yards out, and further chances at both ends came and went as both teams played out an entertaining second half. Malaga to their credit ended the game on the front foot. With Betis only drawing, Malaga ended the season in 6th place, the best team in Andalucia and hopefully Europa League football next season. Report by Scott Forbes

the Toffees. The Spaniard, 39, is thought to have been Everton's first choice to replace David Moyes, who signed a six-year contract to manage Manchester United. Martinez said last month he would leave Wigan after four years at the helm. "Bill Kenwright (Everton chairman) and myself have agreed a deal," Wigan chairman Dave Whelan told BBC Sport.

English teenager Charley Hull beaten in German open play-off English 17-year-old Charley Hull finished second in the Ladies’ German Open after being beaten in a sudden-death play-off by Carlota Ciganda. Heavy rain forced the abandonment of the final two rounds at Golfpark Gut Hausern near Munich, with Hull and Spaniard Ciganda tied at six under par. In the play-off, held at the 15th hole, Ciganda made birdie while Hull's effort from 20 feet came up just short. Hull has made an impressive start to life on the Ladies’ European Tour, finishing second in her first five events of the season. In winning her third Tour title, Ciganda picked up a cheque for nearly £45,000. England's Rebecca Hudson finished third, one shot behind the leading duo.

Confederations Cup: Xabi Alonso out for Spain through injury Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is out of Spain's Confederations Cup squad because of a groin injury. The Real Madrid player is one of three names cut from the provisional 26man squad, with fellow midfielders Javi Garcia of Manchester City and Benat Etxebarria of Real Betis also released. Chelsea's Fernando Torres and Arsenal's Santi Cazorla are among seven England-based players included. Torres, 29, who opened the scoring as Chelsea won the Europa League final this season, had failed to make Spain coach Vicente del Bosque's recent squads. But after 23 goals for the Stamford Bridge club this season, Del Bosque said it was now time for Torres, who has scored 31 goals in 101 appearances for the Spain national side, to return to the fold for the world and European champions. The 2013 Confederations Cup takes place in Brazil from 15-30 June.
