Hope for survivors fades in Bangladesh collapse

As rescue work on the collapsed building housing garment factories in Dhaka entered the sixth day on Monday, the authorities said they no longer expected to find any survivors.

On Sunday night, rescuers working deep inside the rubble were told to leave, as cranes were brought in to lift heavy blocks of fallen concrete. Army spokesman Shahinul Islam told reporters: "We are proceeding cautiously. If there is still a soul alive, we will try to rescue that person. We are giving the highest priority to saving

people, but there is little hope of finding anyone alive."

Fire brigade chief Brig Gen Ali Ahmed Khan said crews had seen bodies lying on the ground inside, but that "no-one was seen Rescue coalive". ordinators said that work with heavy-lifting gear would be done carefully to avoid mutilating bodies trapped under the debris. Building owner Mohammed Sohel Rana was arrested on Sunday near the Indian border. He had gone on the run after the eight-storey Rana Plaza building collapsed and now faces charges of

negligence, along with two government engineers who were involved in approving its design.

The authorities in Spain and Bangladesh are searching for David Mayor, a Spaniard who owned one of the factories in the building. At least 3,000 are estimated to have been in the Rana Plaza building when it collapsed. About 2,430 are now known to have survived but hundreds are dead or missing. At press time, the official death toll was 377. Anger at the building's collapse has triggered

IAs for my lighthouse question last week, apart from everyone telling me that you would have GPS on board so you wouldn’t need to use any maths to work out where you were. However, my argument still stands that there must be a way to know how far you are from the lighthouse, and therefore the rocks, just in case your GPS isn’t working. And, yes, I am one of those that has ended up in a very dodgy place due to my Garmin getting it wrong and the woman’s voice when she tells me I’m not obeying her drives me nuts. I hear that in Australia the voice is an Australian voice saying “you have reached your destination. Don’t forget your sunnies and don’t let the seagulls get your chips!” I’m sure I’d find that hilarious for the first thousand times (easily pleased, me!) after which I’d want to throttle him! Last week was very busy. On Thursday I went down to the coast to watch singer Paul Young make a Paella with a resident chef, on Friday we had one of our information events about what to do in the case of a death here in

Hope fades for survivors

The Rana Plaza building contained five garment factories, employing more than 3,000 workers, who were making clothing for European and American consumers.

Events

Spain and on Saturday I was at the Homes, Gardens and Lifestyle Show and met Tommy Walsh from Ground Force on the telly who was most amusing. However, at the last event it was a shame that more people hadn’t turned up to support it and along with other things here, if we don’t pull out our digits and go along to them we will find that events won’t be coming down here to the Costa del Sol anymore. They are very well attended on the Costa Blanca so we need to make sure we do more here as well. Up here in Coin, we had a hail storm yesterday afternoon and there was snow on the mountains this morning!

Labour activists, citing customs records, company Web sites or labels discovered in the wreckage, say that the factories produced clothing for JC Penney; Cato Fashions; Benetton; Primark, the low-cost British store chain; and other retailers.

But the industry has been widely criticised for its low pay and limited rights given to workers and for the often dangerous working conditions in garment factories.

An estimated 125,000 people were killed in a cyclone that hit Bangladesh.

Economic forecast Hope Fades revised down Continued from PAGE TWO

The government has revised down its forecast for the economy this year, saying the level of contraction is likely to be worse than previously predicted. Madrid now expects the economy to contract by 1.3 per cent in 2013, compared with its earlier estimate of -0.5 per cent.

The announcement came as the government presented its economic programme for the next three years. The unemployment rate hit 27.2 per cent in the first three months of 2013 - the highest level on record in the country. The total number of unemployed people has now passed the six million figure,

although the rate of the increase has slowed.

The government expects the unemployment rate to remain at about this level this year, before falling to 26.7 per cent in 2014. It expects the economy to return to growth next year, predicting an expansion of 0.5 per cent in 2014. Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria told a news conference after last Friday's regular Cabinet meeting that the government is now aiming to cut income tax in 2015 as a stimulus measure to boost the economy. She said the government also hopes to bring its deficit

down to 6.3 per cent of the country's annual economic output this year, then to 5.5 per cent in 2014, and 2.7 per cent in 2016.

"They need to act now, and the UK government needs to basically establish regulation to control these brands and then to protect the lives of workers in Bangladesh." Primark occupied a floor of the collapsed building and workers there were suppliers to the brand. A petition has now been launched by War On Want, calling for Primark and other retail brands which used the building's

products to compensate the families of workers killed or injured. Campaigners also want Primark, with Matalan and Mango, which have also used the building's products, to sign the Bangladesh Fire and Building Safety Agreement of firms, unions and nongovernmental organisations aimed at ending the "appallingly unsafe factory conditions" in that country.

Head of Unilever Spain arrested

The chairman of Unilever’s Spanish division, Jaime Aguilera Carmona, was one of a group of over 20 people arrested or formally named as suspects in the so-called "Pitiusa" operation to dismantle a ring that was trafficking in data, sources involved in the investigation said last week. The police also arrested members of the National Police, civil guards and employees of the

Barcelona City Hall and the Tax Agency. Last week's raids were the third phase of the Operation Pitiusa probe, which last year unearthed a ring of around 150 people who had been buying and selling personal documents, such as income tax statements, printouts of account transfers, medical records and lists of telephone numbers. Victims of the ring include Telma Ortiz, the

sister of Princess Letizia, whose employment record was sold to a private detective, and Ignacio López Hierro, the husband of the secretary general of the ruling Partido Popular, María Dolores de Cospedal. An examination of computers seized in previous raids have shown a connection between the Pitiusa operation and the Nóos investigation in which royal son-in-law Iñaki Urdangarin and his wife Princess Cristina have been implicated.

Ex-Melilla chief takes in 40 fleeing migrants

The former mayorpresident of Melilla, Mustafa Aberchán, has defended his decision to literally open the doors of his home to let in about 40 sub-Saharan migrants who were fleeing from the police. They were part of a massive scaling of the protective fence around the Spanish enclave erected specifically to keep out migrants.

Last week more than 50 managed to climb the fence. Police were trying to round them all up when Aberchán, a physician and leader of the opposition Melilla Coalition bloc, saw them in the street outside his home. He told a press conference that at least six were bleeding and others appeared to be having trouble breathing, so he decided to give them refuge in his home.

His action prevented the police from detaining them but after assuring

Aberchán the migrants would be given humane treatment, he allowed them to be taken to the CETI temporary detention centre. Law enforcement authorities have not said whether they will bring

charges against the former mayor-president, who served from 1999 to 2000. Aberchán said that he did what any other citizen would have done and called on the authorities not to treat the subSaharans as criminals.

Dutchman arrested over huge web attack Police in Barcelona last week arrested a 35-year-old Dutchman suspected of being behind one of the biggest ever web attacks. The detainee is believed to be Sven Kamphuis, the owner and manager of Dutch hosting firm Cyberbunker that has been implicated in the attack.

The attack bombarded the websites of anti-junk mail outfit Spamhaus with huge amounts of data in an attempt to knock them offline. It also slowed data flows over closely linked networks and led to a massive police investigation. A Spamhaus spokesman said: "We are delighted at the news that an individual has been arrested and are grateful to the Dutch and Spanish police for the resources they have made available and the way they have worked with us." Spamhaus servers were hit with a huge amount of data via an

attack technique known as a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.

This attempts to overwhelm a web server by sending it many more requests for data than it can handle. Cyberbunker is thought to have kicked off the attack in late March after Spamhaus blocked some servers hosted by the Dutch firm. Cyberbunker bills itself as a firm that will host anything but child pornography and terrorism material.

Non-profit Spamhaus maintains what are known as "block lists" which many organisations use to spot sources of spam and other junk mail to stop them clogging mail servers and inboxes with unwanted messages. Kamphuis took exception to Spamhaus's action saying in messages sent to the press that it had no right to decide "what goes and does not go on the

internet". On his Facebook page, Kamphuis describes himself as Minister of Telecommunications and Foreign Affairs for the Cyberbunker Republic and portrays himself as a campaigner for internet freedom in the mould of the Assange, Julian WikiLeaks founder, who has taken refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London to avoid rape

charges. The Barcelona police have declined to speculate on whether further arrests would be made. Computers, storage devices and mobile phones were seized during the raid on the place where Kamphuis was staying. He be to expected is the to transferred Netherlands in the near future.

Call centres to return

Telefonica, Jazztel and ONO have decided to return to Spain the call centres which were transferred to Third world countries years ago for economic reasons.

However, the economic crisis has made working there more expensive while the new labour laws have reduced the cost of employing people in Spain. Industry Minister Jose

Manuel Soria and the Secretary of State for Commerce, Jaime GarciaLegaz, are credited with influencing the companies to relocate back home. For their part, the companies said they wanted to improve services for their Spanish clients but will keep their call centres in South America and Asia for clients there. It is estimated that the move will create some 1,500 new jobs.

Parliament siege a washout

The so-called indefinite “siege” of Parliament called by antisystem platforms on Thursday, April 25th, ended up with 15 arrests and 29 people injured, including 14 police officers. Around 1,500 people heeded the call of the pressure group, which is seeking the resignation of the government, the dissolution of parliament and the opening of a new constitutional process.

Security around Parliament was beefed up ahead of the demonstration, with over 1,400 anti-riot police deployed on Thursday, almost outnumbering protesters. Some of those taking part in the demonstration acknowledged themselves that the protest had been a failure. A number of other groups that normally taken part in such protests, such as 15-m youth protest movement and the mortgage Victims Platform (PAH), had distanced themselves from Thursday's mobilization. mAdrid

Man chops off hand to claim insurance

insurance fraud investigators became suspicious of an unnamed man who told 11 different companies that he had lost his hand in a car crash, when they discovered his hand was too cleanly severed to be the result of an accident. Jose Luis Nieto, president of accident investigators Gesterec said several things did not add up: " He claimed that the hand was lost when his car ran off the road and slid down the embankment, but we demonstrated that the angle of his turn and the speed of the car would not have produced that kind of result. in addition, the hand was cut too cleanly, without affecting the bone, which is something almost impossible in traffic accidents."

Shooting mars swearing in of government As the new Italian government was sworn in at the presidential Quirinale Palace in Rome on Sunday, two police officers were injured in a shooting incident 1 km away outside the PM's office. Giuseppe Giangrande, 50, was shot in the neck and is described as being in a serious condition. The second officer, 30-year-old Francesco Negri, suffered a serious wound to the leg and he remains in hospital. A pregnant woman was also slightly hurt. A 46-year-old man, named as Luigi Preiti, was arrested at the scene. Rome Prosecutor Pierfilippo Laviani said he

had confessed to targeting politicians, angry that he had lost his job: "He wanted to shoot politicians, but given that he couldn't reach any, he shot the Carabinieri." The swearing-in signals the end of two months of political deadlock. The "grand coalition" between Italy's current main rightand left-wing parties is unprecedented, and will probably prove an uneasy alliance. Democratic Party deputy leader (PD), Enrico Letta, became prime minister at the head of the coalition which includes Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom party (PDL).

Mr Berlusconi will not be a minister but had

Italian gunman being apprehended

pushed for leading figures from his party to be given top posts. Mr Alfano, the PDL's secretary and one of Mr Berlusconi's closest political allies, is deputy prime minister as well as interior minister in the new government. The cabinet is to have more women than usual, including former European commissioner Emma Bonino as foreign minister.

Other women given government jobs include Olympic kayaker Josefa Idem who becomes minister of equal opportunity and sports, and Anna Maria Cancellieri at the ministry of justice. The new minister of integration will be Cecile Kyenge, a doctor originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

EU plan to help migrant workers The European Commission has unveiled plans to improve the rights of workers who move to take up employment in another state within the EU. The Commission said member states should provide better information and assistance to migrant workers and to employers, so that they were better informed about their rights. Employment and Social Affairs

Commissioner Laszlo Andor said: "The free movement of workers is a key principle of the EU's single market. With much higher levels of unemployment in some member states than others at the moment, it is all the more important to make it easier for those who want to work in another EU country to be able to do so." A statement

commission added that

migrant work "benefits host countries because it allows companies to fill vacancies that would otherwise not be filled there is no evidence that migrant workers take jobs away from host country workers". The UK has stressed its commitment to freedom of movement within the EU for people who wanted to work but has also called for much tougher action against those who abuse

the system, arguing that rules that allow recent arrivals who have never been employed or paid taxes to claim the same social security benefits as a member state's own citizens were an affront to common sense and should be reviewed urgently. Only about 3% of the EU workforce is employed in another member state, figures from 2012 show.

Parliament passed a bill on Sunday which will see 15,000 state employees lose their jobs by the end of next year. The bill passed by 168 votes to 123, and had the support of the three parties making up the ruling coalition. It is part of continuing moves by the centre-right government to cut costs and ensure more bailout money from international creditors. But it was vociferously opposed by protesters outside parliament. The new law will overturn what had been a constitutional guarantee for civil servants of a job for life. The government has imposed tough austerity measures in return for aid, including cuts in pay and pensions leading to numerous general strikes. FrAnCE

The abolition of exit permits in January made it possible for the women to travel. They were given the prize for their campaign to free 75 jailed dissidents. Accepting the award on behalf of the group, Laura Labrada said they had never lost faith that one day they would be able to collect the prize. Too much TV food makes you fat? If you have seen British and American passengers disembarking from a cruise liner you might well have concluded that many of them are overweight, and now scientists are claiming that television, as well as fine food on the ocean waves, could be connected with obesity.

The experts at Coventry University suggest that the celebrity chefs appearing on television are recommending dishes too high in sugar and fat. It is a fact that there are

a large number of programmes for foodies on British television and I believe it is much the same in America. They found 87 recipes from the TV chefs were substantially short of healthy eating guidelines, just 13 per cent using healthy ingredients. Dr Ricardo Costa, a senior lecturer in dietetics, said it was hoped the research would prompt chefs to work with dietetic and nutritional professionals in the future to reverse their potential negative impact.

Private schools in measles scare Readers may be aware of the ssevere measles epidemic in Britain and it has now been suggested that children at private schools face the greatest risk.

A leading doctor has told Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper that some 600,000 privately-educated children are at much greater risk of infection than those in the state sector because large numbers of middle-class children were not vaccinated against measles following the Wakefield scare in the 1990s. Also there were many overseas pupils with unknown health records. The risk profile was similar to that in groups such as

gypsies and travellers, who have previously spread the disease.

The doctor urged schools to check urgently the immunisation records of overseas pupils and advised them to engage with families who refused to vaccinate their children.

The deployment of armed drones to carry out unmanned missions and gather intelligence has come under the spotlight recently.

Britain’s Ministry of Defence say the drones have helped to save the lives of military personnel and Afghan civilians and the aircraft are mainly operated in a surveillance and reconnaissance role. Some drone deployment activity has now been moved from America to RAF Waddington in Britain and around 400 peace campaigners have gathered there to protest.

Liverpool respond with six goals The best response Liverpool could give to the Luis Suarez biting incident, which cost the player a long playing ban, was to go out on the pitch and win a football match 6-0 without him. And that is exactly what

the process would have to start all over again. Critics of the European Union believe Britain should break its ties with the European Court of Human Rights. It is claimed Qatada arrived in Britain in 1993 on a false passport and he and his family have received around £600,000 in welfare payments.

Britons jailed Pair Important Notice found in Dubai dead in for home owners in the Coin area hotel Three alleged British drug users who claim they were tortured by police in Dubai learned as their trial ended that they are to spend just 4 years in jail rather than the 15 years or more that had been suggested. It is possible that the sentences will be pardoned July of this year as part of the country’s Ramadan celebrations.

Grant Cameron from Wanstead, London, and Suneet Jeerh from Ilford, Essex, both 25, and and Karl Williams 26, also from Wanstead, were arrested while on holiday in July last year. Police claim they discovered a quantity of synthetic cannabis (known as “spice”) in their car. All three signed statements written in Arabic, a language none of them speaks, and in the cases of the first two they say that they had been questioned with a gun held to their heads, in the case of Williams, he claims that he has had electric shocks administered to his testicles.

They deny the charges of “consumption and possession with intent to distribute” after spending seven months without trial. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has called for a full, independent and impartial inquiry into the allegations into the claims of torture and say they have raised the issue with “very senior officials” in the United Arab Emirates. The UAE say they have investigated the allegations of torture and have found them “baseless”.

Grant Cameron’s mother told the BBC that all of the accused had had guns held to their heads and been told they were going to die. She added that she had been told by officials that her son could be jailed for 15 years or longer. She said she was “Ecstatic” when she heard that the sentence was only four years. The UAE embassy in London has declined to comment.

Motorway boy named A thirteen-year-old boy who was found dead on the M9 motorway in Cadger’sBrae, Grangemouth, Scotland between junctions five and six in the early hours of Saturday morning has been named as Michael Easton. Michael from the nearby Polmont area was last seen at around 9.50pm on Friday in Grangemouth and was expected home at 10pm. Detective Inspector Graeme Hendry said: “We are still in the early stages of trying to establish what happened” adding that they were interested in hearing from any motorists and their passengers that may have been on the road at 9.50pm as they feel that they may have witnessed whatever happened to Michael between leaving Grangemouth and him ending up on the

motorway including any accidents that may have been happening at that time

His family said in a statement released through police in Forth Valley: “We are utterly devastated”, adding that “Michael was a quiet and well-behaved boy, who never caused any trouble and who would have helped anybody. He loved his family deeply, He was a popular young boy who had a keen interest in biking. One of his prized possessions was his scooter and he and his friends spent several hours each week riding around Grangemouth. It is difficult not knowing exactly what happened to Michael and we would ask that anyone who knows anything that can help the police with their investigation to pick up the phone."

A man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s, thought to be from the London area, were found dead in the swimming pool of the Down Hall Country House Hotel in Hatfield Heath, Essex where they were staying together. However, at time of going to press it was not clear what the couple’s relationship was. Police were called to the hotel at around 7.35pm on Saturday after the couple were discovered underwater.

Hotel staff and ambulance crews tried to revive them but both were pronounced dead at the scene. Officers from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate were treating the deaths as unexplained. Chief Inspector Nick Lee said police were not currently looking for anyone else as part of their investigation. Asked if the victims had been going to any of the functions taking place at the hotel, he said: "It's a very busy hotel, there were a number of functions going on. "At the moment we haven't ascertained as to whether these individuals were part of any function or not."

The hotel, described on their website as “one of England’s most established country house hotels” was hosting weddings, birthday parties and christenings last weekend.

Chris Falcus, manager of the hotel, said: "We are devastated by this tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of those concerned.

"As soon as the alarm was raised, two of our team dived into the pool and did everything they could to try and save them. "We are co-operating fully with the police investigation."

The Coin Town Hall has initiated a plan that if approved would regularize up to 90% of properties on non-urban land.

The Coin Town hall has initiated the process in order to regularise the situation of the vast majority of illegal properties in the area. This would consist of issuing certificates equivalent to the First Occupation Licence that would permit the property to obtain correct contracts for utility supplies, and register the building as a dwelling rather than a tool shed or such like.

At this current moment there are approximately 7,000 buildings in Coin built on non-urban land, 70% of these buildings believed to be houses. That means that approximately 4.000 houses could benefit when this new law if approved. The cost of this certificate will be rather expensive, being approximately 5% of the assessed value of the construction. This would be the equivalent to the cost of obtaining the corresponding initial building licences that have not previously been obtained on these properties.

De Cotta Law of Sierra Chica, Coín (opposite La Trocha) will be investigating this and will shortly advise in respect of the criteria for properties which can be legalised and the procedure which is required. The News will keep you informed as soon as we hear what is happening and will be able to advise you how you can go about this. www.decottalaw.com coin@decottalaw.net

Give it back

Ian Duncan Smith has said that it is an anomaly that all pensioners, no matter how wealthy they are, receive the same retirement benefits and is urging those that can afford it to voluntarily hand back their winter fuel allowances, free bus passes and television licence fees.

Most people over the age of 61 are entitled to claim up to £300 in winter fuel allowances. Anyone living in the UK born before January 6th 1952 can claim winter fuel allowance (apart from a few exceptions) regardless of the income or wealth. Prime Minister David Cameron promised to safeguard the universal benefits in 2010 and has so far resisted calls to change it. However, Business Secretary Vince Cable has said that it would be difficult for this Government to address it because it was not part of the coalition agreement.

Sheikh set to lose marina Qatari businessman Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani could lose what was going to be a key business for him on the Costa del Sol: La Bajadilla marina in Marbella.

The Andalusian Ports Public Agency (APPA) is about to bring proceedings to annul a contract it signed with Sheikh Abdullah in December 2011 because of his failure to meet the terms of the agreement. He has until midnight on Wednesday this week to rectify the situation or face losing his operating license.

Al Thani was given a three-month extension in January to comply with the terms of the deal. He had already been fined twice to the tune of €25,000 and €130,000 for failing to react to previous warnings. He also failed to pay the fines.

Al Thani won a public tender to extend the installations at La

Cercania train times adjusted

Renfe has adjusted the Malaga-Fuengirola local train times to improve the connection with the AVE high speed train to Madrid. As of Sunday, April 28th, the first trains out of Fuengirola will leave at 6.10, 6.45, 7.20 and 7.40. After that the trains will leave at their usual times - on the hour, 20 past the hour and 20 to. The new times make it possible for travellers to catch the AVE trains to Madrid that leave Malaga's Maria Zambrano station at 7.10 and 8.10.

The last trains from Fuengirola leave 22.20, 22.50, 23.20, 23.50 and 24.20, which means the service has been extended by an hour. The first trains will leave Malaga's Centro Alameda station at 5.20, 5.55, 6.30 and 6.50, then each hour at 10 minutes past, half past and 10 minutes to. The last trains will leave at 21.30, 22.00, 22.30, 23.00 and 23.30. This means that passengers in the AVE from Madrid that arrives in Malaga at 22.55 will have time to catch the local train to Fuengirola.

Bajadilla marina together with a public company owned by Marbella City Hall, which only has a nominal interest in the project.

The contract was signed on December 2nd, 2011 and the sheikh was to have submitted a construction plan and to have set up a company to manage the concession by June of last year.

Under the terms of the concession, the Sheikh has to pay an annual fee of €750,000 for the right to exploit the marina but he failed to do so last year and has yet to do so this year. Marbella Mayor Angeles Muñoz, has asked the APPA to extend the time given to Al Thani to regularize the situation, but the agency

feels he has already had enough breaks.

The Sheikh’s project entails investing €109 million to extend La Bajadilla and add 541 berths, with a wharf big enough to handle cruise ships.

The project also includes a commercial centre covering 23,000 square meters. Al Thani is also the owner of Málaga soccer club, which reached the quarter finals of the European Champions League this year on its first appearance in the competition, but which faces being excluded from Europe next year pending appeal for failing to settle its debts.

Police investigated over fines

Two local policemen are being investigated after posting a clip on the internet showing them laughing as they hold up handfuls of fines, apparently celebrating the number they had been able to issue. After the diario de Seville published a photo last week, Seville mayor Juan ignacio Zoido (PP) ordered the investigation , saying it damaged the image of the local Police who do "magnificent work" and showed a lack of respect for the people of Seville and their own uniforms. cordobA

Mother charged with murder A woman rescued from the Guadalquivir river late last Friday has been charged with the murder of her four-year-old, whose body was also pulled from the river. She was taken to the city's reina Sofia hospital suffering from hypothermia and transferred to jail on Monday to await the initial court hearing. At press time, no other details have been released.

The Local Memo from Voice Madrid

Muriel Pilkington

No fun at the top

P

oor old Mariano Rajoy. He's damned if he does do anything and damned if he doesn't do everything the Left wants him to. That's quite cheeky of them, because they ran the country for seven and a half years and left it in a terrible state so they really have no right to tell Rajoy what to do.

F

or example, his government has passed an anti-eviction law aimed at helping the poorest non-mortgage payers to stay in their homes for the next three years at least - something the Socialists didn't even attempt when in power. On the contrary, the Zapatero government planned to open ten special courts to speed up evictions in those parts of the country where there were so many they were clogging the courts and stopping them from dealing with other matters. Now these bleeding hearted Socialists dare to tell Rajoy and his ministers that they can't feel the pain of the evictees. Presumably they were anaesthetized when the Socialists were in power.

T

he other contradiction is supplied by the United Left (IU) in Seville. As we know, the IU formed a coalition with the Socialists to keep the latter in power after last year's regional election. Now the Junta has come up with the brilliant idea of expropriating the properties taken over by the banks to allow their owners to continue living in them for the next three years. The IU woman in charge of the scheme - whose name I can't be bothered to remember - only oversaw 146 evictions last year. Now that's a U-turn that would have taken Maggie's breath away. But there's a sting in the tail here. The banks are now threatening to call in a huge debt of some €140-odd million that the Junta has managed to run up with them over the years. The banks are also threatening to do the same to the Socialist Party and the United Left in Madrid, who back the Junta's scheme and want it applied nationwide.

R

ajoy's victory at the polling stations turned everything on its head. It jolted the unions awake for a start. They had staged a couple of half-hearted strikes towards

the end of Zapatero's reign when he dared to make a few timid cuts. However, they soon found the energy and inspiration to call a general strike 98 days after Rajoy was sworn in, and had made the cuts needed to keep an EU bail-out away from the door. They had never called a general strike during any previous Prime Minister's honeymoon of the first 100 days. Since then everyone and his mother has gone on strike - like the Iberia airline pilots and ground crews. Here we have a company that's in the red to the tune of billions so what's the solution - go on strike to try to stop the company from downsizing (to save money) and make it lose more billions in the process. And so it goes.

R

ajoy may not be very charismatic but he's set himself a course to put the economy back on its feet and seems to have the courage to stick to it. Because of the first round of cuts, Spain did not need a full bail-out from the EU and Rajoy's insistence on putting growth ahead of austerity seems to be bearing fruit. He's managed to help forge a Southern European bloc against La Merkel's austerity mindset and seems to have worn down other Northern European leaders into coming round to his point of view. Christine Lagarde at the IMF supports him, as does Barak Obama and even La Merkel seems to be softening up a little. I dare bet that if she wins the next election at home later this year, she'll do a U-turn and come out for growth.

A

s for the protests and strikes that have plagued Rajoy's government, they seem to be on the wane if last Thursday's "siege" of Parliament is anything to go by. Most of the usual protest groups stayed away because word got around that the anti-system professional protesters were going to get violent. As a result, around 1,500 turned up making it the smallest protest "largescale" protest of all time. The organisers had hoped to make it last several days but it was all over bar the cleaning up by about 10 pm that night.

N

Read your favourite news, plus a whole lot more in

o doubt the unions have lots of protests planned for May Day and it will be interesting to see how many people they can get on the streets. It falls on a Wednesday and I suspect lots of people will turn it into a long weekend at the beach although they'll probably opt to go skiing now that the weather gods seem to have decided to eliminate summer this year.

Brits start to buy abroad again - some figures Weary of a long hard winter, Brits kick off 2013 ravenous for a foreign home in the sun.

The UK’s appetite for owning a home abroad has returned with a vengeance in 2013. Demand for information about buying overseas property was higher in the first quarter of 2013 than in any quarter during 2012, according to the most recent Overseas Guides Company (OGC) Quarterly Index, which measures interest in destinations popular with

British second homeowners and expats.

The OGC, a free quality resource for overseas property-buyers, attracted 9,685 direct requests for information, in the form of downloads of its free Buying Guides, between January and March this year. This is a staggering 50 per cent increase on the same quarter last year and even a 20 per cent hike on enquiries between July and September 2012, typically the busiest quarter in any year.

“There’s been a very noticeable resurgence in interest in European destinations, in particular France and Spain, during the first three months of the year,” said Richard Way, Editor of The Overseas Guides Company. “January was by far the strongest month of the quarter in terms of enquiries into OGC – understandable, given the effect the crisis in Cyprus had when it broke. The first quarter of 2013 also saw the launch of the OGC Ireland Buying Guide, which has been well received and indicates a definite interest for property in Ireland, where the market is deemed to be turning. Never a school to shy away from the most demanding material, Stagecoach Theatre Schools Spain and Gibraltar once again shone in a spectacular production which included excerpts from ‘A Chorus Line’, ‘Mulan’ and the yetto-open stage version of ‘Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’. From the teenies to the teenagers, everyone had a chance to take centre stage and there were some notable performances from future stars as well as some gallant triers and real cuties. This is what makes Stagecoach different from the competitors – I have had the pleasure to be in the audience of the annual showcase for five years running and there has been no repetition, no overuse of 'star' performers and there are always fresh faces to spot. Stagecoach operates a no audition required policy, giving all pupils a fair chance to participate which is a great way to build the confidence of the less outgoing children and also makes for emotional impact on the audience

(A.K.A. 'The aah Factor'). This particular show was a lot heavier on the spoken word than usual and despite some early issues with radio microphones during which the little troupers remained totally professional, it was great to see some drama performances providing some light and shade between musical numbers. My particular favourites on the night had to be the gorgeous William as James of Giant Peach fame; Nell who showed outstanding dance ability as Cassie in 'A Chorus Line' and the two sets of Spice Girls, one big (ish!) and one small. I also

loved the finale with the Gary Barlow smash hit 'Sing' building from a duet to a massive choir and back again. As Principal Warren Webley was welcomed on stage by his excellent teachers, everyone in the theatre cheered with genuine feeling and admiration. A great night's entertainment. MILLIE

Milly, a seven year old miniature schnauzer, is a much loved family pet but sadly due to changed family circumstances her owners are having to seek a new home for her. Milly is adorable, fully vaccinated and microchipped, and loves playing ball and curling up on the settee. She likes other dogs and older children but would be best

rehomed where there are no very young children. She is very affectionate and at 8.2 kilos is the perfect weight! She is not aggressive, but can run towards young children thinking they are playthings. She has not met cats. Her owners are very much hoping to find a new loving home for Milly – can you help! Masons help Sid Wright, Master of the Fuengirola Masonic Lodge 96, and local celebrity for many years, had nominated Age Care as his Master’s Charity for 2012.

Sid celebrated his 92nd birthday with a visit to Age Care’s Advice Centre in Calahonda to give the charity a donation of €2,300, before returning home to mark the occasion with his family and friends. Handing the cheque to John Greaves, Treasurer of Age Care, Sid explained that the Lodge had raised the funds for them because he is very keen to support this charity for all its good works with the older community on the Costa del Sol who may not always be able to help themselves. David Long, a member of the Lodge said “The Lodge is

not a social club, our aim is to raise funds for local charities. However, we have a full social calendar including dinners, quizzes and race meetings and new members are always welcome.”

John Greaves, Treasurer of Age Care thanked Sid and the members of the Masonic Lodge saying how grateful Age Care was and that these funds will enable them to do more for the local older community, in particular to help them be less isolated by getting them out of their homes and into a social environment. Also present were Tony Bellamy, President, and Beverley Morland, Vice President of Age Care. And from the Fuengirola Masonic Lodge 96 were David Long, and John & Taneka Mantle.

Macular Degeneration - A personal view Until it happens to you, like so many things in life, you take your sight almost for granted. I was in that group. Like most people after a certain age I had glasses, first for distance and then reading as time passed by. Also like so many people, I did not take a great deal of notice of the intensity of the sun; I had the usual photo chromatic lenses, rapid changing etc, but rarely took extra precautions. Wrong! In my youth I was posted to Iraq and Aden and did not wear sunglasses, especially as the ones eventually issued were heavy and ugly. Little did I know the damage that was being done to my eyes so long ago and which is now causing me considerable problems. I now have AMD or to be accurate, Age related Macular Degeneration, the MOST common cause of blindness.

Macular Degeneration is where the cells on the macular or centre of the retina at the back of the eye, die and are not replaced. It can start to be visible when you see what is like a “floater” or small spot, which does not move, it follows wherever you look. If you see this then seek immediate medical help because if it is AMD the progression can be extremely fast and

without treatment WILL lead to full or partial blindness. With the correct medical treatment it is possible to stabilise the condition and slow down any progression. Left to its own devices it will NOT get better!

There are two types of AMD – “wet” and “dry”. The “wet” condition is where there is leakage into the eye from behind and this causes the retina effectively to blister and cause irreversible damage if left. The “dry” condition is a slower progression and is usually noticeable as distortion in your vision, lines look “bent”. Very little can be done to correct the “dry” condition except for slowing the progression down by taking anti-oxidants containing Luteina which provides some protection to the eyes against UV, and wearing good sunglasses. I take “Oftan Macular” daily on the advice of my eye surgeon. This capsule is also recommended by hospital specialists and is readily available from chemists. There are similar products available in the UK but this is the one called up in Spain. The “wet” condition, which I have in my right eye, is normally very fast moving. I went from nothing visible to almost blind in the centre of the eye in only six

Baa Baa Black Sheep

This little chap was found by one of The News’ people trying to catch up with

four little white sheep and a ewe in the campo near Coin last weekend. He was eventually reunited with his shepherd, Dominic, who took this black sheep of the family back to his mum. Let’s hope he’s keeping nice and warm in his wooly coat as we had hail on Sunday and snow was seen on the mountains on Monday morning!

weeks!! So speed is of such importance.

If caught early enough the “wet” AMD can be treated and the condition can normally be stabilised. In some cases the treatment can improve the sight in the affected eye as the eye dries out and the leakage is arrested. This is what has happened in my case, vision cannot be restored but what is there can be stabilised and maintained.

Only as recently as 4 years ago, the main treatment was to laser the affected area to stop the leakage. This treatment works but it does leave scars on the retina which permanently destroys vision in that area. More recently the condition has been treated using powerful modern, and expensive, drugs administered by injection directly into the eye. This is done in hospital under local anaesthetic and while unpleasant, does not hurt. The most modern of these drugs is Lucentis which is the newest and most powerful, and Macugen. Your consultant will decide which to use and how many injections are needed. A normal course is some six injections at about four/six week intervals. I have had both drugs and I am very pleased with the results so

Compared to normal vision, macular degeneration induces images distortion and dark areas.

far. My central vision is gone but the blind area has reduced as the plasma blisters have dried out. My peripheral vision is good and I have full colour vision. I have regular checks with my consultant and expect probably one or two injections each year to hold my vision as it is now. Had I left going to a Consultant another couple of weeks, or a month, then I would have little or no vision in my right eye. It is also VERY important to use sunglasses at all times when it is bright outside, the sun need not be out to cause damage. Forget vanity; get wraparound sunglasses to protect the eyes from the side and

above as well as the front. I use “Solar Shield” overglasses which are made for the job and fit over normal glasses. They are obtainable on the Web, but similar are available from Betterware.

Finally, your eyes are very valuable so look after them. Wear UV protection always, and at the FIRST sign of a problem go to a specialist, and this does not mean getting your eyes tested in a shop. In Spain you can be examined at a hospital via your doctor or you can get an opinion and treatment privately. I am very pleased with my private Consultant Surgeon, who I consulted because the wait for an appointment in

Malaga was too long for me, and who was very honest with his comprehensive testing (which included CT scans of the eyes) and advice. For me it was the best €80 I have spent. I had the treatment privately as well and it is not cheap, but at least I have retained some vision, others are not so lucky. Be sensible, protect your eyes, and seek immediate help if you see a change in your vision.

If what is found proves to be harmless, or is another condition which is causing you concern, at least you will know. Written by Jack Griggs

WALKER’S WILDSIDE

Wild flowers are popping up everywhere. Outside my gate in a small grass verge, I counted twelve different wildflowers. One of these was Borage, which is also known as Starflower. This is an annual herb and is native to the Mediterranean. The leaves have a cucumber like taste. Traditionally, borage was cultivated for culinary and medicinal uses, although today it is commercially cultivated as oilseed. Its culinary uses are as a vegetable or dried herb. As a fresh vegetable, it is used in salads or as a garnish. It is also used in soups or in Italy as a pasta filling. Traditionally, borage is

used in gastrointestinal, respiratory and cardiovascular disorders (colic, cramps, asthma, bronchitis and kidney and bladder disorders). The flowers can be prepared for infusion. Borage is also used in companion planting to protect beans, spinach, strawberries and tomatoes, the latter because it confuses the adult tomato hornworms looking for a place to lay their eggs. The orchid season is also upon us and with the ground warming up, the second wave of orchids are appearing. On my regular dog walk, without really trying, I’ve seen Sombre Bee Orchid, Yellow Bee

Orchid, Butterfly Orchid and Mirror Orchid. Wildflowers in Spain are profuse and too many to mention but a good place to start identifying them is to invest in a

photographic guide plant book. Tuck this under your arm, venture out and a whole new world will open up to you. written by Denise Walker

DVD NEW RELEASE

The Impossible

Release date: May 6th 2013

Director: Juan Antonio Bayona Starring: Actors: Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Tom Holland

Based on the true story of the Spanish Beyon family (albeit here portrayed as British). The Impossible is the unforgettable account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

IRON MAN 3 Directed by Shane Black Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Guy Pearce, Gwyenth Paltrow

Iron Man 3 pits brash-butbrilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

In the Extremis story, Tony has an unexpected reunion with an old colleague named Maya Hansen. Hansen is a scientist responsible for the creation of the Extremis process, essentially a computerized version of the supersoldier serum that created

captain America. When Extremis is stolen by a terrorist group, Hansen calls in Iron Man to help stop a new super-powered foe from unleashing the power of Extremis on Washington D.C. The most significant outcome of Extremis was a new suit of armor and a new slate of abilities for Tony. Initially, he proved no match for Mallen's Extremis powers because his armor was too clunky and slow. Now matter how advanced the weaponry in his armor, Tony couldn't

move at the speed of thought like Mallen did. That all changes when Tony injects himself with the Extremis process. It rebuilds his body from the ground up to the point where Tony can now directly interface with computer systems and satellites.

The crucial circuitry for the Iron Man armor is now stored inside the hollows of his bones. Like Darth Vader, Tony is now more machine than man, except he actually gets to keep his good looks.

But the true-life terror is tempered by the unexpected displays of compassion, courage and simple kindness that Maria (Naomi Watts) and her family encounter during the darkest hours of their lives.

Both epic and intimate, devastating and uplifting, The Impossible is a journey to the core of the human heart.

Prioritising your needs is essential to your wellbeing right now, although the first thing to be clear about is what those essential needs actually are. You will be given a rare opportunity to rise above something that has held you back, the door is finally unlocked and you are able to move steadfastly ahead. Apply some patience when it comes to assessing if an intense relationship will sustain its way through the months, give it time to develop and grow, there is no rush. It is time to let go and release your attachment to a certain piece of your past that has felt as if it has a karmic hold over you. A memory may return with a rush and it is right to set that shadow free in order to make more room for the future. The direction you are now moving in may feel as if it is out of your control, the destination that is revealing itself is not what you had planned at all. Meaningful insights and revelations are coming your way. It is as if time has stood still for too long and waiting for a certain outcome is becoming inwardly agonizing. Someone may have been driving you crazy lately but you must have more faith and not let an ounce of doubt spoil things. Events coming up will have a great impact on the next six months. This is a time of preparation, to get ready for the end of the old whilst being able to create your ideal for the way ahead. Let your intuition be your guide. This week speeds along at an unusual rate and you may just be able to manifest whatever it is you truly want. On the other hand you could also feel out of your depth with some things unsure of who or what you can trust. Direct your imagination positively and creatively and that will allow you to recognise and understand what is about to happen, but do not let it use you and provoke your fears, be proactive this week. This week is all about becoming observant about what others are trying to tell you, in some areas of your life you may have thought you got the bad end of the deal, however, as you reflect upon the past and begin to retrace your steps it all starts to become crystal clear. You may need to re-enter certain emotional territory now in order to lead you onto greener pastures, you are likely to get directly to the heart of an issue which will enable you to know where you need to be. Slowly the pressure you have been under will slip away; the problem has been that at times you may have been fixating on something, gripping it so tightly, leaving little room for options and alternative ways through. You are mentally alert this week and many cannot keep up with your ability to use wit at every turn. This can also be a very flirtatious time and the pleasurable side of life becomes highlighted, just don’t allow things to get out of hand.

Someone holds the reins at the moment or you feel as though they do in a very essential part of of your life, possibly your resources and finances. You may be feeling somewhat powerless as you wait for their next move caught in the middle of someone’s power play. There is a great opportunity to confront someone whom you think is off track or things have just fallen apart. You will get better results if you approach with an open heart and honesty as communications are direct and as a result become productive and insightful. This is a busy week with a lot to get done, you just need to focus on what you are doing and strive for excellence in all that you do. Get extra rest and relaxation when you can. It is all within you – that is the answer to the question you have been asking lately. The key is to trust that you do know the best way to do something, experience has shown you why one approach will work and another definitely won’t. Stick with what you feel and trust your intuition – then you will thrive. You will want to spend more time in the home and to focus on your health, looking at your diet and an exercise routine could be a good starting place.

Your creative levels are at an all time high, creating bonds and opportunities that can last your entire lifetime are highlighted, just let things happen and develop naturally. Romance breezes into your week so be prepared to be swept off your feet. Duties and responsibilities still need attending to but your timing is perfect and you are able to sort things out effectively. Someone may be trying your patience and pushing you a little too far, it may be a good time to set boundaries. It is time to step out of your comfort zone because until you do you will not make that breakthrough you want so badly. Something could have made you feel quite vulnerable and could have caused you to question certain ideals and beliefs. There is a liberating opportunity coming up to bridge the gap between your heart and your mind, to heal old traumas and replace these feelings with new energy and vitality. You are being given a chance to re-boot your life; change is all around you and will be a direct reflection of your thoughts for better or worse. This is the time to think purely and with a clear intention - being careful of course what you wish for. You are very sensitive right now so make sure that you have adequate emotional space to recharge. Take control of your mind, your emotional body and the direction you wish to steer your ship.

Kym’s Kitchen ...you don’t have to be a chef!

Romesco is a Catalonian sauce typically made with garlic, peppers, tomatoes and almonds. We have it regularly with baked Lubina,, but you could also serve it with grilled cheese, meat roasts or pasta.

Prawns with Romesco sauce Ingredients:

• 1 red pepper • 3 fat garlic cloves • 1 fat, fresh red chilli • 1 large ripe tomato • 10 shelled hazelnuts • 10 blanched almonds • 3 sprigs parsley • small slice day-old bread • 8 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar Directions

1. Prepare ahead - halve the pepper lengthways and remove the seeds and stalk. Line a grill pan with foil and put the pepper halves, skin side up, on the grill pan with the whole garlic cloves, chilli and tomato. Grill for 2 minutes, turn the tomato, then grill for a further 2 minutes. Remove the tomato with a large spoon, then peel, quarter and remove the seeds. Then chop the tomato roughly. 2. Continue grilling the pepper, chilli and garlic for 4-5 minutes, until the pepper and chilli skins have blackened and the garlic is starting to soften (the garlic skin will start to split when it is ready). When cool enough to handle, peel and halve the chilli, and scrape out and discard the seeds. Peel the pepper

(Serves 4)

• 400g pack large, cooked, peeled tiger prawns , defrosted if frozen

and roughly chop both the pepper and chilli. 3. Spread nuts over the foil and grill until toasted. Finely whizz the nuts and parsley in a food processor. Tip into a small bowl. 4. Heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan, add the pepper, garlic and chilli and fry for 3 minutes. Tear up the bread and add to the pan, turning it in the oil until lightly browned. Whizz in a food processor with the tomatoes, salt, vinegar and oil until roughly chopped. Tip into a bowl. Leave to cool and store in fridge for up to 3 days. 5. On the day add the whizzed nuts and parsley to the sauce and mix. Serve in a small bowl on a plate with the peeled prawns. Supply cocktail sticks for spearing the prawns.

Nada de nada - Nothing at all.

SPANISH By Valerie Mitchell

LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

Magazine N 21

TUESDAY, April 30th 2013

It seems there is still confusion among some of my readers about why nada can sometimes mean nothing and at others anything. This is simply because Spanish likes to use double negatives while in English they are frowned upon. If one is asked the question ¿Quieres algo? Do you want anything? You can reply No, nada - No, nothing. Or you can say No, no quiero nada. No, I don't want anything. The Spanish hasn't changed but in English we aren't supposed to say I don't want nothing. ( Unless we want something as technically in English two negatives make a positive but let's not even go there) We know that in shops when you are asked ¿Algo más? - Anything else? the standard reply is Nada más - Nothing else. No tengo nada means I don't have anything No veo nada - I don't see anything No hace nada - He or she doesn't do anything. No puedo hacer nada - I can't do anything No tengo que hacer nada - I don't have to do anything No voy a hacer nada - I'm not going to do anything Antes de nada means first of all ( before anything else) Antes de nada vamos a limpiar la cocina - First of all we're going to clean the kitchen Antes de nada quiero hablar con el jefe - Before anything else I want to speak to the boss. And casi nada means hardly anything (literally almost nothing) No me costó casi nada - It cost me hardly anything. No tienen casi nada pero son felices - They have hardly anything but they are happy Ya está. That's it Hasta la próxima - Until next time Valerie

'Cosmetic crisis' waiting to happen

Injections to plump up the skin are a "crisis waiting to happen" and should be available only on prescription, according to a UK review of cosmetic procedures. The independent review warned that dermal fillers, covered by only the same level of regulation as toothbrushes, could cause lasting harm, adding that cosmetic surgery had been "trivialised". It also attacked "distasteful" companies for putting profit ahead of care. The cosmetic procedures industry is booming. It was worth £750 million in the UK in 2005, £2.3 billion in 2010 and is expected to reach £3.6 billion by 2015. But regulations have failed to keep pace, leaving patients vulnerable.

The biggest growth is in non-surgical procedures such as fillers to tackle wrinkles, Botox and laser hair removal - the area the report describes as "almost entirely unregulated". The advisory panel said the procedures, which could go horribly wrong, were being treated as casually as having highlights done at the hairdresser's and had become commonplace at "beauty parties". At a European level, both medical devices such as breast implants and Botox, which is classed as a medicine, are regulated. Fillers are deemed to have no medical purpose so are regulated in the same way

as toothbrushes and ballpoint pens. There are 190 different fillers available in Europe compared with just 14 in the US.

Sir Bruce Keogh, the NHS medical director for England who led the review, said: "The most striking thing is that anybody, anywhere, anytime can give a filler to anybody else, and that is bizarre." Sir Bruce also said cosmetic surgery deals, such as buy-one-getone-free offers and handing out free breast surgery as prizes in raffles, were a "particularly distasteful" way of incentivising people to go under the knife. ss

There were also questions of safety. The review said there were no checks on surgeons' qualifications in some parts of the private sector, an issue made worse by more than half of cosmetic surgery being performed by "fly in, fly out" doctors surgeons based abroad who fly into the UK to perform operations and then fly back out again.

The review, which was commissioned by the Department of Health, has recommended a series of measures to better protect patients: -

l Legislation to classify fillers as prescription only

Formal qualifications for anyone who injects fillers or Botox l

l Register of everyone who performs surgical or non-surgical cosmetic interventions

l Ban on special financial offers for surgery

l Formal certificate of competence for cosmetic surgeons

A breast implant register to monitor patients l

l Patients' procedures must be approved by a surgeon not a salesperson

l Compulsory insurance

in case things go wrong

l A pooled fund to help patients when companies go bust - similar to the travel industry

The review was started after a global health scare caused by breast implants made by the French firm Poly Implant Prothese (PIP). The implants were filled with industrial grade silicone and had double the rupture rate of other implants.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons welcomed the report saying it was "thoroughly relieved" with the findings and that there was an "urgent need" for dermal fillers to be classed as prescription medicines.

Eating adult food 'healthier for children' Children who eat the same food as their parents have healthier diets, according to researchers at the University of Edinburgh,

after looking at the family meal habits of more than 2000 five-year-olds. They called for more to be done to help parents

establish good eating habits in children's early years.

They said "childfriendly" alternatives to adult food were likely to be nutritionally inferior: "This is already known to be the case with kid's menus in restaurants, so children are best off eating the same foods as their parents."

The researchers also identified other meal

habits which had a smaller impact on diet. Not eating a main meal during the day, frequent snacking between meals, eating in the living room or bedroom, and an "unpleasant atmosphere" during mealtimes were all weakly associated with poorer diets. They also found that firstborn children had healthier diets than second or third born.

People Magazine has voted for one of the worlds favourite movie stars this year

The most beautiful woman in the world

… but Gwyneth Paltrow says of the award “it obviously isn’t true!” and seems just a bit embarassed by it

Gwyneth Paltrow, 40, has been named “The World’s Most Beautiful Woman” by People magazine and atributes her enduring good looks to her fitness regime.

Gwyneth, who played Pepper Potts who was the PA to Iron Man’s Tony Stark, played by Robert Downie Junior, pushed Ray actress Kerry Washington into second place and Les Miserables' Amanda Seyfried into third. Iron Man III goes on general release throughout the UK this Friday.

Married to Coldplay rocker Chris Martin, the couple have two children, Apple, eight, and Moses, seven, but she said: "Around the house, I'm in jeans and a T-shirt. I don't really wear make-up. That's what they're used to," adding that she doesn’t think her family see her as the most beautiful woman in the world and she said of her 36-year-old husband: "He'll make a joke about it! If I've gotten fully dressed up, he'll be like 'Oh, wow! You're Gwyneth Paltrow!' because he's used to seeing me in like baggy shorts and frizzy hair."

Paltrow uses the Tracy Anderson Method, with the fitness regime's other adherents including Madonna, Nicole Richie, Courteney Cox, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. She explained: "When I first started, I thought 'I'll never be good at this. This is a nightmare!', but now it's like brushing my teeth, I just do it." Paltrow also told the magazine she hoped to instil a good body image in her children, especially her daughter, who is becoming interested in things like make-up.

Survivor to gig JLS split The last surviving member of the Bee Gees is to tour after his wife told him to get out and stop moping around. Gibb said: "She told me to get off my backside and stop going along with the whole idea that everything was finished for me. She said, 'You've got music, so make music!' That was her kicking me, so I decided to jump right in."

Brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice were the supergroup known the world over as The Bee Gees but never quite recovered after Maurice’s death in 2003, aged 53, following complications during a routine operation. Then Robin succumbed to cancer and died in May last year. Previously, there was another brother Andy (pictured below with his brothers), who died of a heart complaint aged 30 in 1988. They were born on

the Isle of Man before moving to Australia in 1958 to start a new life.

Barry, 66, plans to tour the UK to celebrate the life of his brothers and their music and is helped along the way by his son Stephen on guitar and Maurice’s daughter, Sam, singing with him so it will still be a family affair. Barry Gibb toured Australia last year and mum Barbara, now aged 92, was at every one of them supporting her remaining son.

Concerts already arranged will be in Birmingham, Manchester, London and Dublin in the autumn.

Five years after shooting to stardom in The X Factor, boy band JLS have announced that they will split at the end of their tour after five number one hits and two Brit awards under their belts, they are going their separate ways. Aston Merrygold, 25, Marvin Humes, 28, Jonathan "JB" Gill, 26, and Oritse Williams, also 26 - shot to fame in 2008 after finishing second to Alexandra Burke on the TV reality show. The quartet will leave fans with more than just memories, bowing out with a farewell tour planned for December, a new single and a greatest hits album all planned.

Torremolinos

Mohammed were decapitated. Apostasy from Islam brought the death penalty and all males were forced to be circumcised. Christians and Jews who wouldn't convert were barred from advancing in society. What kind of 'living in harmony' is that? This compared with under Christian kings (10851492) Christians, Jews and Muslims traded freely, even exchanging gifts on holidays. Jew and Christians were equal before the law, something that was never allowed under Islam. Jews could be found in high public office as diplomats, fiscal agents and ministers. Muslims and their Western apologists always make Christian Spanish Kings out to be monsters and Muslim rulers to be tolerant & benign. It's a myth - the myth of Cordoba. In 1066 Muslims massacred 4000 Jews in Granada. The once Jewish city of Lucena was destroyed when the Jews were ordered to convert and refused. In 1086 Jews and Christians were ordered to convert or flee, which many did to the Christian north where they were welcomed and given land.

I read your story on Cordoba courting Muslim tourists with Halal meat etc and had to respond to the myths it told. First, Halal is a cruel and barbaric form of killing animals. They can't be stunned but have their throats slit while the killer intones the name of Allah over the dying animal. It should be illegal, and is in other places. Please do not support this. As to the comment of how everyone lived in harmony under the Muslim invaders' rule: When Muslims conquered Spain they made tens of thousands of Christians into slaves, which was the norm under Muslim conquests. Non Muslims had to pay a special tax (Jizya). Church lands were confiscated (try to find a Christian church here that dates before the reconquest), many churches were destroyed or turned into mosques, new ones prohibited. Harmony or submission? Muslim Emirs appointed and deposed Bishops, called church councils and sold bishoprics to the highest bidder. Priests were subject to abuse in the streets and Christianity was criticized and ridiculed freely, but any Christian or Jew who criticized Islam/

D. Hester This weekend I took myself off to the Homes Gardens and Lifestyle Show in Torremolinos. Being originally from London, I was expecting something like the Ideal Home Show that is staged every year around April in Earls Court and is on for around two weeks. Thousands of people from all over the UK pour through the doors and everyone has a jolly good time queuing up to go through the “houses” to see what can be done, queuing up to get the free food on offer upstairs (of course you can also buy whatever you want from an international selection that is always on offer if you want, too), and standing amongst a huge crowd watching a demonstration of some new (and usually totally useless

If Islam was so glorious then, where did it go? It was and, has never been, like that anywhere else. Islam doesn't allow equality of any religion with Islam, Allah forbids it. No Muslim country, even today, has true freedom of religion, speech, conscience or press. For too long these myths of tolerant Islamic rule, told by biased Muslim 'historians', has been swallowed whole by many in the West. Fortunately that is changing now and the truth of Muslim conquest and rule in Spain is now being told. As far as for Muslims being allowed to pray in this church/mosque (which was originally a Visigoth Christian church until the Muslim invasion), where is there a mosque in any Muslim conquered land, that was once a church, that allows Christians to pray? Muslims won't even allow Jews to pray on their holiest site, the Temple Mount, which the conquering Muslims deliberately desecrated by building their Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque. Harmony? Editor says: I will expect quite a few replies to this letter!

Fuengirola gadget. If you manage to make it through to the end of the day, you can stand still while “The Queen” is played and then take all your bags full of gathered goodies home with you on the tube. So, what a shame that there were so few stalls and so few people at the weekend’s exhibition here on the Costa. I have yet to go to an event like this on the coast that is well supported and I hear that the over 50’s show has even been cancelled.

Editor says: Yes I went too and, as you say, what a shame it wasn’t better supported so that it could have been even bigger and better next time. And after all that effort from the organiser. We should all support these things better or we’re going to lose them.

Comment By Ken Campbell

Finding your way around With the warmer evenings approaching now is a good time to learn your way around the night sky.

I

’m forever being asked how I know all the constellations, the truth is I don’t! But I do know one or two tricks to help me find my way around the night sky. If you think of the sky as being a huge map then the easiest way to find your way around is by identifying a few landmarks and work from them. he Plough is one of the most instantly recognisable constellations and at this time of the year it is almost directly overhead. So start your journey with The Plough and hopefully you’ll be whisking your way around the night sky in no time. The Plough –or as the Americans call it, The Big Dipper- is in fact part of a bigger constellation called Ursa Major or The Great Bear. The seven brightest stars are actually the Great Bears Tail and hindquarters but they form a saucepan shape with three stars forming the curved handle and another four stars forming a slightly crooked square which is the bowl of the saucepan. he two end stars of the bowl are called the pointers. If you follow a straight line from the pointers down toward the horizon then the first bright star you come to is the North Star, the Pole Star or to give it its proper name Polaris. Stand facing Polaris and you are facing due North. Hold your right arm out and this is east, your left arm points west and behind you is south. Polaris is the tip of the tail of Ursa Minor the Little Bear (do bears have tails?) o back to The Plough and now follow a line from the Pointers in the opposite direction to find the sickle shape of Leo directly overhead. The sickle or ‘reversed question mark’ form the head and throat of the Lion while the body of Leo are the three stars forming a triangle that stretches off to the left of the sickle. I’ve always thought that Leo is one of the few constellations that does actually look like what it is meant to be. ack to The Plough again and now look at the three stars that form the curved handle of the saucepan. Follow the natural curve of the handle until you come across a bright red coloured star called Arcturus. Try to identify the five other stars that create a kind of kite shape with Arcturus at the tail end of the kite, this is Boötes the Herdsman forever chasing after the tail of the Great Bear.

fter ‘arcing to Arcturus’ it’s time to ‘Spike to Spica’. Continue the arc that you drew from the curve of the handle of the Plough through Arcturus and straighten it out a bit until you come to a bright blue/white coloured star called Spica in the constellation Virgo. Virgo itself is a sprawling constellation and very difficult to distinguish-sorry any Virgos but it is rubbish! ust below Spica you see a bright yellow coloured ‘star’; this is Saturn which this week will be at its closest point to the Earth. Try looking at Saturn with binoculars to try and see the rings, even the smallest telescope shows them off nicely. ack to The Plough again and a free eye test! Locate the three stars that form the curved handle of the saucepan, now look very carefully at the middle star of the three, Mizar. Mizar is a double star and if you have very good eyesight you should be able to make out the fainter companion star, Alcor very close by. This is a great little trick to try with the kids as they can usually spot both Mizar and Alcor. Now look at them through binoculars and you’ll be surprised to find that Alcor is also a double star with its own companion in orbit around it. ow you’re on a roll so let’s try something fancy. Back to The Plough once more and this time follow a line diagonally across the bowl of the saucepan from the star that joins the handle through the bottom star of the Pointers until you come to two stars about equal brightness and Bingo! You’ve just found Castor and Pollux the two brothers in Gemini the twins. ey presto! You are now a bona fide astronomer, go and impress the neighbours with your skills.

Jerez next stop for MotoGP

Classic Clubs Spring Outings The iconic 2CV has many admirers here in Spain and Malaga has its own thriving club led by Luis Miguel Rodriguez Navarro. Their event this month was a visit to the Donkey Sanctuary in Fuente de Piedra and members from SOL Classic Car Club were invited to join them. In all there were around 30 cars taking part in this family event and most of the drivers had their bonnets up when they stopped to compare engines – it is amazing how many different variations there are. Nor was language a problem since car fanatics

always manage to get themselves understood and, besides, many of the Spanish children spoke perfect English!

For SOL Vice Chairman, Ray Holland it was a matter of shuffling his classics around to get his 2CV out of the garage since his own club had been up in the same direction the day before, only this time he was driving his Mercedes and the destination was flamingo watching on the Fuente de Piedra lake.

www.thenewsonline.es

There weren't quite as many birds as hoped, but the beautiful sunny weather and an outstanding lunch in Fuente de Piedra where the cars were displayed on the square, made up for the lack of wildlife. The circuit of Jerez is now one of the most popular MotoGP venues and the focal point for a city fanatical about sport. Set in a slight valley in the south of Spain, Jerez is blessed with consistently good weather and beautiful scenery, its numerous grandstands providing the perfect viewing facilities for up to 250,000 spectators. Ben Spies will miss the

race due to injury, with Ducati test rider Michele Pirro replacing him in the satellite Pramac squad.

The action gets underway this Friday 3rd May, with the Moto3 riders on track first.

What a difference a month makes! A month ago we had circa 150 members bowling and socialising. Then came Easter and all the Snow Birds flew back to Britain (and more snow). On Thursday we managed to scrape together 14 bodies and one of them was an Irish Coleen left over from St Patrick's day!

We had a great day. The crack was good and so was the bowling. To be fair some of our members were up the coast playing in The Andalucian Championships, and doing well so far. We wish them luck and good fortune. We also have to congratulate Dennis King and Sandy Guthrie on coming first and second respectively in the Costa del Sol Championship points table this year. A noteworthy achievement.

more would be bowlers. Roll on September when most of our friends, old and new, return. Meanwhile the stay at homes are keeping busy

with a competition on 22nd May and our new venture - petanque!

Wayne’s Poker Tips A second What separates the good poker player from the poor player? One of the main characteristics that separate the good from the bad is the quality of starting hands between the two players. While Texas Hold’em is a complex game which requires far more thought than simply playing only the best hands, poor players generally play far too many hands (which translates into quantity over quality) and that does not go unnoticed by opponents at the table.

While it is not being suggested here that every player should set out on a path to only play a short list of elite hands preflop, if you are not finding a great deal of success at the table or you have fallen into a bit of a slump, then you might want to look at both the quantity and quality of the starting hands your playing. One of the aspects of Texas Hold’em poker, which emphasizes skill over luck, is that players outside of the blinds can participate

Combined Colleges 291 for 3 - Costa del Sol 135 All Out After disappointing starts to the season, both Combined Colleges and Costa del Sol needed a victory, but it was Colleges who prevailed, winning the one-sided match by 156 runs.

Benavista Bowling club had a stand at the over 50s exhibition at Estepona from where we gathered

Why is playing random hands in Texas Hold'em poker a very poor strategy?

up. In other words, players can fold their poorer hands and take greater risks with their good ones. The point is playing a random set of holdings will not win often enough to be profitable over the longterm. While it is true that any 2 cards can potentially win a pot, mathematically a pair of aces is a much stronger starting Hold’em hand than a pair of deuces, and will win a great deal more often.

There are still times to mix up your hands and keep your opponents guessing, but this is not a result of playing random hands, rather it is loosening up your strategy and incorporating a wider range of preflop hands. So if you are finding that your losses are mounting, or simply finding it difficult to pull yourself out a of slump, it is time to stop playing those random holdings and become more discerning over your starting hands.

trainer in Steroids enquiry

A second Newmarket trainer faces a British Horseracing Authority inquiry over giving steroids to racehorses. Gerard Butler told the Independent several of his horses had treatment for injured joints, but he had been assured the substance did not breach rules.

Colleges won the toss and openers Brian Barrett (100) and Previn Menon (84) put together an impressive 184 run partnership for the first wicket. Although they lost three quick wickets, Jason Wild (56 not out) and Mark Ward (19 not out) saw the batting side to an imposing 291 for 3 from their 35 overs.

The run chase began steadily, but despite some solid batting from Mick Button (28) and aggressive stroke play from Imthyias (28), Costa del Sol lost regular wickets, finishing on 135 all out. For the bowling side, Bradley Stoneham impressed with three wickets on debut, backed up by two wickets for He said he believed more than 100 Newmarket-based horses will have been given the same drug.

Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni was given an eight-year ban on Thursday for using anabolic steroids on horses. Anabolic steroids are banned in the UK, although allowed out of competition in countries including Australia, Dubai and the United States.

Bale nets double Player of the Year

Tottenham's Gareth Bale has been named Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year. He becomes only the third player to win both awards in the same season. "It's a massive honour," said the 23-year-old. "To be voted by your peers is one of the biggest things in the game." Bale fought off competition from Liverpool's Luis Suarez and Robin van Persie of Manchester United to win the prestigious main award.

David beckham sent off after After last weeks nightmare defeat at Valencia it was important for Málaga six minutes in PSG victory

David Beckham was sent off just six minutes after coming on as a substitute in Paris St-Germain's 1-0 win at Evian. The former England midfielder, 37, was shown a straight red in stoppage time following a lunge on Youssef Adnane. PSG, who led through Javier Pastore's 50th-minute goal, were already a man down after Marco Verratti was sent off for a second bookable offence. PSG sporting director Leonardo said the referee "made mistakes" and added the red card shown to Beckham was "unfair".

Baptista for Málaga had a good shot saved as Málaga gradually came more and more into the game. On 39 minutes Málaga were in front, Sanchez at right back who came on for the injured Gamez delivered a pin point cross for Roque Santa Cruz to head home. The same player should have put Málaga two up on the stroke of half time

but fired the ball just wide.

Málaga started the second half well and Baptista had a header tipped over by Getafe’s keeper Jordi Codina, then on 47 minutes Weligton fiercely headed home a Morales cross to the delight of the Rosaleda. With 20 minutes left Getafe were back in with a chance of spoiling Málaga’s hopes. A hopeful freekick headed into the box ended with

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez's name was booed twice at the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year awards on Sunday. The PFA came under fire last week for their refusal to withdraw Suarez from its Player of the Year shortlist after he bit Branislav Ivanovic during Liverpool's game against the Blues at Anfield. In a room full of fellow professionals and other guests at the Grosvenor Hotel in Mayfair, Central London, where the awards were handed out, the controversial Uruguayan's name was booed on two separate occasions. The first time came when he was named in the team of the year, and secondly when his name was read out on the short list for Player of the Year, in which he finished second behind Gareth Bale.
