Temperatures will drop this week By Thursday the latest heatwave in one of the hottest summers in decades should ease ................................ P2 NATIONAL NEWS - SPAIN HAS THE HIGHEST AVERAGE SPEED IN THE EU

New crack down on speeding Speeding has killed 170 people in 157 accidents on Spanish roads so far this year and the Traffic Authority has launched a new campaign simultaneously with 25 other European countries in an effort to make drivers observe speed limits.

Until Sunday, the Guardia Civil’s Traffic police will step up controls along 2,000 stretches of road with the aim of controlling the speed of 100,000 vehicles a day. Most of the control points will be set up on conventional roads which is where seven out of every 10 accidents occur. The campaign is being carried out in more than 25 European countries through the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL). In addition to the control points, there will be awareness-raising radio spots about speeding on urban streets, secondary roads and motorways and how it decreases the driver’s visual field, his ability to brake in time and the gravity of the impact in case of accidents. The slogan will be “Speed

makes you make mistakes. There is no second chance when you’re driving.” According to a study by the University Institute of Automobile Research (INSIA), Spain has the highest average speed on highways in the EU. Other studies have shown that by reducing speed, a third of road deaths could be avoided. The average Spaniard’s aversion to speed controls is illustrated by the socalled speeding map recently produced by the European Drivers’

Association (AES), a body which defends drivers, which shows the location of radar speed controls all over Spain, including the 25 that produce the most fines. Most motorists do not object to the radars themselves but to their location. Automobile clubs want them placed at black spots or where “speed is a risk factor” and view what they see as their haphazard placement as an attempt by the authorities to collect more fines.

ICKHAM’S

WORLD Ouch!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

I have been feeding apples and carrots to horses that stay a while in our area of the campo for years – with the permission of the owners of course – and had been feeding a particular pair with absolutely no trouble for about a year. I have always said that horses are big, powerful, potentially dangerous animals and am usually pretty careful around them. These two are normally docile and don’t get into a hissy fit vying for food. last Thursday, I had fed them both their treats and was just ducking back under the electric wire when I landed face first in the dirt. I have no idea what happened but one of them had landed a huge kick to my back and sent me flying. I couldn’t breath and stupidly, didn’t have my phone with me. So, off to “urgencias” I went and then on for Xrays as they reckoned I had at least two broken ribs to go with the grazes and huge bruise but, according to the doctor at Xanit, I must have very soft and bendy bones as nothing was broken. However, the bruising is not good and I’m stiff as a board. It will teach me not to turn my back on them in future. Won’t stop me carrying on feeding them though and now I’ll have my phone too! I watched “The Best of Men”, a period drama on BBc2 at 10pm last Thursday night and it was fabulous – well deserving of awards at next year’s round of gongs. There are further dramas coming up at the same time so let’s hope they’re all this good. Telly worth watching at last.

Spanair crash victims remembered Families of the people who lost their lives in the 2008 Spanair crash at Madrid’s Barajas airport gathered at Terminal 2 on Monday, where an olive tree and a plaque bearing the names of the dead have been erected in remembrance. The catastrophe took place on August 20th four years ago, when flight JK 5022 crashed on take-off after a catalogue of errors on the part of pilots and ground crew. One hundred

and fifty-four passengers and crew were killed, while 18 survived. Two people have been charged in connection with the disaster, but the judicial investigation has been shelved despite many questions remaining unanswered. Pilar Vera, the president of the Association of Victims of Flight JK 5022, said on Monday: “We are convinced that it was not an accident but a

catastrophe that could have been prevented if the normal regulations and procedures had been followed.” At the ceremony, Public Works Minister Ana Pastor vowed to work to increase security in Spanish civil aviation and also promised to reform the make-up of the controversial CIAIAC accident investigation panel, whose report on the disaster was met with widespread indignation by victims’ families.

Basque regional election Taking noise brought forward more seriously Basque regional premier Patxi Lopez announced on Tuesday that his Cabinet had decided to bring the next regional election forward to October instead of next March. It will be held on October 21st, a year and a day after ETA announced its current ceasefire. He said the decision had been made because of the current economic situation which required a “new time of dialogue”. Polls show that the Basque Nationalist Party

(PNV) will win more seats with Bildu, the pro-ETA conglomeration of parties, running second. Lopez’s Socialist Party will come in third with the Partido Popular lagging

behind. Lopez formed the current government in coalition with the PP, although the PNV won the most seats – 30, but seven short of a majority.

Town halls across Spain are finally beginning to take noise levels more seriously. They are being helped by new technologies and a guide from the experts on how to implement sustainable mobility plans to reduce noise levels. These include sound measuring equipment, the laying of noiseabsorbent pavements, and more controls on night clubs. Barcelona City Hall is implementing its “Plan Silencio”, with four

environmentalists taking noise readings wherever they go. In Valencia, new noise-absorbing pavements have been laid in many streets, which have reduced traffic noise by 75 per cent. In Valladolid, a mime group called “Brigades against noise” has handed out more than 4,000 cards on the subject, and 500 ear protectors, and Madrid City Hall plans to ask the noisiest businesses like nightclubs to close earlier.

Heat wave to ease The current heat wave will start easing on Thursday, and temperatures should drop by as much as eight degrees in some parts of the country. However, the weathermen have been promising relief from

successive heat waves all summer, only to tell us that another one is on its way.

But the weathermen are not telling us what to expect next week ...

Galicia is currently enjoying rain which will extend its cooling relief across the north of the country during the next few days.

It has been one of the hottest summers for decades and pessimists are expecting an equally hot autumn.

Black September terrorist gunmen killed three and wounded 55 in an attack on Athens airport

M-15 withdraws from ‘Occupy Parliament’ protest The M-15 youth movement has announced it will not be taking part in the “Occupy Parliament” protest scheduled for September 25th, aimed at forcing the government to resign, the dissolution of Parliament and “the opening of a transparent and democratic process to draw up a new Constitution”. the government’s spending cuts in May, June and July and continue in their posts even though the capital is almost deserted, with most of its inhabitants at the beach or in the mountains, seeking relief from the successive heat waves that have scourged the country.

Local residents and business owners have complained about the treatment being meted out to them. Pedestrians are obliged to walk in the road to avoid the barriers and residents have to produce photographic identification to reach their homes.

One 65-year-old resident said: "What we are going to go through in September is a terrifying prospect. To cap it all the police helicopter is buzzing overhead all night." An Interior Ministry spokesman confirmed last week that the barriers would remain in place

ETA prisoner can ask Seven years for Spanish politician for early release Cuban prosecutors are seeking a seven-year jail term for Spanish politician Angel Carromero over the death of dissident Oswaldo Paya in a car crash.

The Interior Ministry has granted Iosu Uribetxeberria Bolinaga, who is serving a 32-year sentence for the 1998 ETA kidnapping of prison director José Antonio Lara, third-degree status, which enables him to apply for early release before the High Court. A panel of doctors at the Zaballa prison in Álava, where Uribetxeberria is being held, recommended the ETA terrorist be allowed to appeal to the court after reviewing a medical report issued by Donostia Hospital which concluded that the inmate was suffering from an

Under Cuban law, involuntary manslaughter carries a term of between one and 10 years. The report said Uribetxeberria’s illness usually claims its victim within nine months, with only a 10 per cent chance of living more than a year. He has been on hunger strike for just over two weeks but prosecutors argue that his condition, although serious, does not mean his death is imminent. ETA inmates in Spain and France have joined

South American cocaine ship seized Police arrested 21 Bulgarians after boarding a ship off the port of Cadiz which was carrying about three tonnes of cocaine. The SV Nikolay, seized last week, belongs to a firm in the Bulgarian port of Burgas, Bulgaria's BTA news agency reports. The firm's manager said he had lost contact with the ship a day before it was intercepted. It was heading for

Galicia, where police arrested the Spaniards who were waiting to receive it. They also arrested six Colombians belonging to the cartel which

despatched the cocaine. Spanish police have seized nearly five tonnes of cocaine in the past two weeks – more than in the whole of last year.

A top park official on the island of La Gomera in the Canaries said last week that the authorities believe that the blaze that started on August 4th, which was only brought under control late last week, was the work of arsonists attempting to destroy one of the greatest natural wonders in Europe – the Garajonay National Park, home to flora not found anywhere else in Europe. In the past year, officials have recorded 30 attempts to set fire to the park. The latest blaze has destroyed 800 hectares of the Garajonay Park’s 4,000 hectares. The park’s director, Angel Fernandez, told a national newspaper: “It was the work of environmental terrorists, who have been trying to destroy the park

since last year. We have been able to stamp out the blazes but this time they almost achieved what they set out to do.” The fire, which forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents in

different areas of La Gomera, has destroyed some 4,200 hectares of the island. Canary Islands regional premier Paulino Rivero has accused Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of

ignoring the emergency in La Gomera, saying it was the first time he had encountered a Spanish government that had no interest in asking him what was happening.

Zero alcohol tolerance for N EWS drivers IN BRIEF

Got a story? Got pictures? Send your stories or pictures to The News

editorial@thenewsonline.es

madrid

Ryanair could lose licence

The limit for drivers is currently 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, but it looks as if the Traffic Authority could be thinking of changing all that. The DGT has toughened its stance on alcohol consumption since 2001, when it suggested in a magazine article that the average male driver could drink two whiskies, or two-and-a-half glasses of wine, or two cans of beer and still be within the legal limit. Now the DGT says that research has shown that even the smallest amount of alcohol can increase the risk of an accident when driving. The chances of an accident are doubled when a driver has 0.3 grams of alcohol per litre of blood, and by five times between 0.5 and 0.8 grams. Beyond 0.8 grams the risk increases ninefold, and above 1.5 grams by up to 20 times. As a result, the

DGT is looking at imposing a ban on drivers drinking as much as a single drop of alcohol before getting behind the wheel. Currently, the punishment for exceeding the alcohol limit can involve a fine of up to €500, six penalty points from the driver’s licence, or a driving ban of up to four years if the alcohol level exceeds 1.2 grams.

No reliable test However, current technology is still not sufficiently reliable to establish whether somebody has absolutely no alcohol in their bloodstream, according to Bosco Torremocha, the head of FEBE, which

represents the country's alcohol industry. He told a national newspaper: "Somebody who has been drinking, and who only sleeps six hours, could test positive either for the amount of alcohol in their blood or simply on their breath." The problem is compounded by the fact that some non-alcoholic substances such as inhalers used to alleviate asthma symptoms will test positive. Most EU member states have the same alcoholper-litre limit as Spain: 0.5 milligrams. The governments of Hungary, Romania, the Czech

Republic and Russia, where alcohol traditionally plays a big role in traffic accidents, have imposed a zero limit.

“Inoperable” But zero tolerance doesn’t work, according to Eugenio Dobrynine, head of the European Automobile Commission: "It's inoperable. Other countries have tried to implement this and all it has done is to make things more complicated." The problem isn't so much imposing "alcohol limits", he said, but investing in resources to make sure that the level is respected by motorists.

The development ministry’s State agency for Security is investigating why the irish low-cost airline had to make three emergency landings in one day, July 26th, when three of its planes were diverted from madrid to Valencia because of storms over the capital. The three pilots issued mayday calls because their fuel was running low and the company said that it had activated the alert when there was enough fuel left for 30 minutes. The company is accused of trying to save money by carrying less fuel. The Official College of Commercial aviation Pilots, (COPaC), said ryanair is putting economic considerations before safety but the company insists it operates within the demands of the European authorities and that its fuel levels had never fallen below the permitted level. madrid

More fires, double the arrests The Guardia Civil has reported detaining 306 people – more than double the total for all of last year – in connection with 2,007 fires till the end of July this year. Of these, 1,020 were set deliberately. Galicia, Castilla-Leon, andalucia and Valencia have suffered the most fires and most of the people detained by the Guardia were arrested in these four regions. The Guardia Civil said many investigations were still under way and that the number of fires produced between January and July would probably increase once the investigations were completed.

Man charged over 'Breivik-style' Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said on Monday that the UK would be committing plot

diplomatic suicide if it tried to enter his country's embassy in London. He warned during an interview on state television about the continuing dispute over Wikileaks founder Julian Assange that such a move would open up the UK to having its diplomatic missions around the world entered. Mr Assange has been in the embassy since June and been granted asylum by Ecuador as he fights extradition. The interview with Mr Correa opened with images inside the embassy showing Assange hugging his lawyer, the former Spanish judge

Baltasar Garzon, before he addressed crowds of his supporters from the embassy's balcony on Sunday. Mr Correa said he was prepared to take the issue to the United Nations. He also said Ecuador was hoping for strong support from a meeting of the Organization of American States on Friday. "We're hoping for clear and coherent backing because this violates all interAmerican law, all international law, the Vienna Convention and all diplomatic traditions of the

Syria warned about chemical weapons US President Barack Obama said on Monday that Syria’s use of chemical weapons would be a "red line" that would change his thinking on intervention in the crisis. He said he had "at this point not ordered military engagement" but added: "There would be enormous consequences if we start seeing movement on the chemical weapons front or

the use of weapons."

Threatening messages sent by mobile phone and over the internet that triggered an exodus of migrant workers from southern indian cities mostly came from Pakistan, interior Minister rK Singh has said. Some 30,000 people have fled the cities of Bangalore and Mumbai in recent days. Mr Singh told reporters: "The bulk of these messages have their origin in our western neighbour, in Pakistan. Most of them have been uploaded in various websites in Pakistan." The indian government has imposed a ban on bulk text messages to try to stop the panic.

Other Pussy Riot activists hunted Russian police are searching for other members of the punk band Pussy Riot who took part in the anti-Putin protest in Moscow's main cathedral. According to reports, two other band members participated. Last week seven unidentified Pussy Riot members in balaclavas met Western journalists and said the trial had only made them more determined. The search is separate from

the trial that led to three band members being jailed for two years – a verdict that drew an international outcry. They said they did not know the other band members' names, because they had an anonymity rule and just used nicknames for each other. Police have not said how many are being sought. Police have also questioned ex-chess champion Garry Kasparov for allegedly biting a

policeman's hand at a protest outside the Moscow court before the Pussy Riot trio were sentenced on Friday. In Helsinki on Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned against overreacting, saying the judicial process had not yet been exhausted: "There is still the possibility of filing an appeal and the lawyers for the young girls plan to do so. Let's not draw any rash conclusions and go off into hysterics."

Disabled girl arrested for blasphemy in Pakistan Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari has ordered a report into the arrest of a young Christian girl, reportedly with mental impairments, accused of desecrating pages of the Koran. Police said the girl was arrested last week in a Christian area of the capital, Islamabad, after a furious crowd demanded she be punished. Police

said they had no choice but to intervene because the angry crowd was threatening to set the girl alight. Officials said the girl could not properly answer police questions. Her parents have been taken into protective custody following threats. Many other Christian families have since fled the neighbourhood. The incident comes amid a

debate about Pakistan's strict anti-blasphemy laws. Rights activists have long urged Pakistan to reform the laws, under which a person can be jailed for life for desecrating the Koran. Many of those accused of blasphemy have been killed by violent mobs, while politicians who advocate a change in legislation have also been targeted.

Is there a letter? But it’s too late for Winnie now Jackie Powell, 49, who was appointed as Moors murderer Ian Brady’s mental health advocate in 1999 claimed during a Channel 4 documentary that Brady had given her a letter that he had written, to be opened upon his death, that detailed where the body of 12-year-old victim Keith Bennett was buried by him and fellow killer Myra Hindley. She said that she was to give the letter to Winnie Johnson, Keith’s mother, who has been pleading with Brady to tell her where her son’s body could be found so that she could give him a proper burial. However, Winnie Johnson, pictured above with a photo of her son, died last week never having been told about the letter at the request of her family, and never having known where her son’s body was. Ms Powell was arrested in South Wales last week on

suspicion of preventing the burial of a body without lawful excuse but searches of her home and Brady’s cell have found no such letter and have found nothing to suggest that Brady has told anyone where Keith is buried. She was later released on bail pending further enquiries. Martin Bottomley, head of investigative review of Greater Manchester Police's major and cold case crime unit, said: "We do not know if this is true or simply a ruse. We have been, and always will be, open to pursuing any new lines of inquiry that arise from significant scientific advances or credible and actionable information. I want to be explicitly clear about this: Ian Brady has not revealed to police the location of Keith's body. What we are looking at is the possibility, and at this stage it is only a possibility, that he has written a letter to Keith's mum Winnie

Johnson which was not to be opened until after his death. We do not know if this is true or simply a ruse but we clearly have a duty to investigate such information on behalf of Keith's family." Brady and his partner Myra Hindley, who died in jail in 2002 aged 60, were responsible for the murders of five youngsters in the 1960s. Their victims were sexually tortured before being buried on Saddleworth Moor above Manchester. Pauline Reade, 16, disappeared on July 12th, 1963, and John Kilbride, 12, was snatched in November the same year. Keith Bennett was taken on June 16th, 1964, after he left home to visit his grandmother. Lesley Ann Downey, 10, was lured away

from a funfair on Boxing Day 1964, and Edward Evans, 17, was killed in October 1965. Brady was jailed for life at Chester Assizes in 1966 for the murders of John, Lesley Ann and Edward. Hindley was convicted of killing Lesley Ann and Edward and shielding Brady after John's murder, and jailed for life. In 1987 the pair finally admitted killing Keith and Pauline. Both were taken back to Saddleworth Moor to help police find the remains of the missing victims but only Pauline's body was found.

Battling pensioner wins Drivers have been refunded after traffic wardens issued fines for cars parked on snowcovered double yellow lines. Pensioner Anthony Wilkinson, 70, pictured right, captured two officials as they slapped penalty notices on dozens of cars during the cold snap in November 2010. The law states parking tickets can only be issued if the double yellow lines are visible. Mr. Wilkinson claimed he caught two traffic wardens shuffling the snow away with their feet before putting penalty tickets on the car windows to make it appear the lines could be seen. Despite not being issued a ticket himself, Mr. Wilkinson has successfully battled against the fines which were issued by Nottingham City Council. After viewing his footage of the underhand wardens, all the drivers

who were issued a ticket outside Mr. Wilkinson’s home in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, were told they could get a refund. Mr. Wilkinson, who was told his appeal against the fines had finally been accepted last week, said: "I think it has highlighted a possible culture of deception and disdain for the public among the employees of the parking industry. When I saw the footage on my cameras I just thought to myself ‘no, it is wrong’. I couldn’t believe what I saw. How sneaky and underhand can you get?" The council admitted the wardens – employed by private firm NSL – should not have issued the penalty tickets. A council spokesman said: "We instruct the civil enforcement officers that they must be able to see the lines and the windscreen in order to be able to issue.

This would normally cover snow, standing water, frost, leaves and similar. It is clear the penalty charge notices should not have been issued. The conduct of the civil enforcement officers was not and would never be condoned by Nottingham City Council. In this instance the enforcement was certainly not fair or accurate and was not consistent with the high standards of enforcement expected." The council no longer uses NSL and its own staff now enforce parking regulations.

A spokesman from NSL said: "This incident was bought to our attention in January 2011, not long after it took place. The matter was dealt with in accordance with our usual processes and appropriate action was taken."

Locked-in Tony loses 'Locked-in' campaigner Tony Nicklinson broke down in tears as judges refused his landmark rightto-die case on Thursday of last week. Three judges sitting in London unanimously agreed that it would be wrong for the court to depart from the longestablished legal position that "voluntary euthanasia is murder, however understandable the motives may be". They said doctors and solicitors who aided another person's suicide were "at real risk of prosecution". They described Mr. Nicklinson's case as 'deeply moving and tragic' but ruled the current law did not breach human rights. Mr. Nicklinson, from Melksham, Wiltshire, suffered a catastrophic stroke which left him almost totally paralysed in 2005. Speaking through his computer, which is controlled by blinking and head movements – the only movements Mr. Nicklinson is capable of – the father-oftwo, 58, vowed to appeal against the decision. He said: "Judges, like politicians, are happiest when they can avoid confronting the real issues and this judgement is no exception to the rule. I believe that the legal team acting on my behalf are prepared to go all the way on this but unfortunately for me it means yet another period of physical discomfort, misery and mental anguish while we find out who controls my life, me or the state."

ree arrested over hit-and-run in Leeds A hit and run driver knocked down two young children in Leeds at around 5.20pm on Saturday. 10-year-old Sabah Saleem (right)and her twoyear-old brother Rahan suffered serious head injuries and have undergone surgery at Leeds General Infirmary. Rahan is making good progress and it is expected that he will be discharged soon while Sabah remains very ill. It is believed that Sabah was trying to shield her little brother at the time of the hit-and-run. They were crossing Brudenell Road, Hyde Park, near the Makkah Masjid Mosque with another youngster who was not hit. At the weekend police were calling for the driver of a silver Vauxhall Astra mark 4, that was manufactured between 1998-2005, to come forward and at around 9.30pm on Monday three Leeds men aged 39, 36 and 26 were arrested in connection with the incident. hours of the morning and that the road had become a drag strip for boy racers and their cars. 12-year-old witness Inzimaam Sulman said he was playing in his bedroom when he heard the car driving “really fast up the road”. He said he looked out and saw the children walking across the street with a bag of onions “and the car just smashed into them. They were flown into the air.” He added: “I

couldn’t believe it. It was awful. I went outside and I could see their mum and dad on the road. It was horrible.” His father, Manover Sulman said that nothing seems to be being done about the use of the road as a race track that has been going on for a while. He explained that there are speed bumps along the road but it seems to make no difference to the irresponsible drivers.

Washington, the head cortador at Rodizio Macarena explained that not only does the cortador have to be proficient at using the razor sharp carving blades, but he must be extremely aware of his surroundings whilst doing so. Sudden or unexpected moves by the diners could prove disastrous for an inexperienced or inattentive cortador.

In the same way a skilled Japanese chef prepares a Puffer fish for safe consumption, the cortadors have a similar responsibility whilst at your table. Washington learned his skills from a Brasilian whilst working in Portugal, who in turn, had learned in his home country. With fifteen years experience as a cortador, Washington is an expert in every aspect of the job and expects nothing less from his fellow workers. On Monday councillor Ana Velasco announced that the town hall has hired another boat to help eliminate the jellyfish. It will join the boat hired last month to patrol 21.5 kilometres of the coastline with nets to catch the jellyfish before they get too close to the shore. Sra Velasco said boats offered a “rapid and economical method” for

tank in the port area, she said. Meanwhile, she asked bathers to respect the flags for their own safety and comfort – red means keep out of the water, yellow indicates a smaller amount of jellyfish while green means bathing is safe.

Drought not expected The director of the Malaga branch of the National Meteorological Office, Jose Maria Sanchez Laulhe, told a local newspaper that while the weather has been “very extreme” this year, this does not necessarily mean that the province can expect another drought.

He said the terral wind from North Africa had driven up temperatures by as much as three degrees above the normal for June and two degrees higher in July and August, adding that the lack of rain was not worrying at this point because “the Mediterranean climate is

The local council does not agree – subsidies received from the Junta de Andalucia are based on the number of people on the register and the town cannot afford to lose 14,000 people. The council is to launch a media campaign urging foreign residents to update their padron and will also ask the consulates of the more than 120 nationalities living in the area to pass on the information.

The campaign will be intensified as the end of the year approaches – the INE plans to clean up the padron on January 1st next year.

Two stores targeted Juan Ramon, the designer at Cocinasplus in Marbella, arrived at work last Saturday morning to discover that the store and Marbella Carpets next door had been broken into. The steel scissor gates and the glass entrance doors had been forced open and the alarm systems had been totally destroyed – “totally destroyed and pulled out of the ceiling, just dangling there, with bits of electronics scattered around”, Juan Ramon said, “Marbella Carpets’ glass doors were just a heap of disintegrated glass and again the steel gates forced open.” Some €900 in cash was stolen from Cocinasplus, together with a camera and a travelling suitcase

complete with kitchen worktop samples. The thieves made off with 30 expensive Persian carpets which were on display at Marbella Carpets, said to be worth more than half a million euros. The store had only recently acquired the

carpets and the store owner had taken the precaution of photographing each one individually so the police know what they’re looking for. However, the police fear the robberies were carried out by one of the specialist gangs who roam the country, which will make it harder to track them down.

In August 2007, nearly 60,000 companies were paying social security, 100,000 people were registered as selfemployed, 644,000 people had jobs and only 83,000 – just over 10 per cent of the province’s working population – were on the dole. The construction sector alone employed 110,000 workers, many of them from neighbouring provinces like Cadiz, Cordoba and Granada, where there was not such a high demand for housing as in Malaga. The high speed AVE rail connection with Madrid also employed a large number of people as it neared completion by the end of that year. Then the mortgage scandal burst in the United States and the financial markets started to panic. Spain’s construction boom went bust and the banks stopped lending money to individuals and companies. Malaga’s annual growth rate of 4.5 per cent has dropped gradually ever since, to stand at an estimated minus 1.5 per cent for this year. Today the province’s economic panorama is desolate. Unemployment has risen 131 per cent since 2007, with 192,000 people out of work and there are fewer than 52,500 companies paying social security. Companies have been going bankrupt at the rate of six a day, although 2,500 companies have also set up in the same period, according to the president of the Malaga Businessmen’s Confederation (CEM), Javier González de Lara. Even so, he said there was still no light at the end of the tunnel: “We’ve never lived through a crisis of this

dimension with so many interwined elements – political, administrative, financial.” He said 65 per cent of the companies which have closed down over the past five years were forced to do so because of lack of financing. He compared this figure to the average in the rest of the EU – “a mere 30 per cent”. The president of the Builders and Developers Association (ACP), José

The only bright spot is the tourism sector. There has been a rise of 4 per cent of foreign visitors this year, after a similar rise last year.

Fewer fair visitors Mayor francisco de la torre said on Monday that there was a 10 per cent drop in the visitors to this year’s August fair, down from six million last year to 5.5 million. He said that while the drop was substantial fairs in other parts of the country had seen drops of 25 or 30 per cent. Despite the drop, he said hotel occupation was up slightly this year, as was the number of foreign visitors, thanks to the cruise ships that put in at the port during the fair to unload some 30,000 visitors. the other good news was the 45 per cent drop in incidents that required police intervention. fuengiRolA

Mayor esperanza oña said it would also be possible to use credit cards in the blue zone parking and that the possibility of extending the time by mobile phone was being studied so that car owners would not have to return to their vehicles. She said one of the advantages for the general public would be that they no longer had to carry much cash on them, which should reduce the number of muggings. eSteponA

Not-so-strange bedfellows

Football Wars

I

I

t shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone that crusading (former) judge Baltasar Garzon wasted no time in jumping on the world’s most famous (or infamous) whistleblower’s bandwagon. What is surprising is that these two have knowingly or unknowingly given a pathetic Latin American president the opportunity to look like a great statesman. Julian Assange at least can’t plead ignorance. Rafael Correa expelled US ambassador Heather M. Hodges in April last year, angered by comments she had made in confidential cables, obtained and released by WikiLeaks, in which she accused Correa of appointing a corrupt police chief “in order to have someone in the post whom he could easily manipulate”. The US retaliated by declaring Ecuador’s ambassador in Washington persona non grata, while Ms. Hodges refused to either apologise or retract her comments.

A

ssange’s appeal to Ecuador for political asylum now gives Correa the opportunity to settle that old score with the US, pass himself off as a great defender of freedom in the run-up to next year’s presidential election and even to wrest the leadership of the Latin American left from his mentor – Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez. And like Chavez, who has closed down more than 30 radio and TV stations for opposing him, Correa recently passed a law making it easier for him to persecute journalists who criticise him. Assange seems to have forgotten that when he spouted “As WikiLeaks stands under threat so does the freedom of expression and the health of all our societies” from the balcony of Ecuador’s embassy in London on Sunday.

E

arlier, Baltasar Garzon spoke to the world’s press – in fairly good English – outside the embassy after a meeting with his client inside. You could almost hear him thinking – Oh what bliss to be back in the international headlines again. Evil tongues say he’s representing Assange to get back at the Brits for not letting him extradite former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet a few years back. That episode rocketed Garzon on to the world stage as a “crusading judge”, but he went over the top and ended up trying to right the wrongs of the whole world, together with a couple of other Spanish judges. After this little clique decided to try Israeli generals for bombing Palestinian civilians and US military and political honchos for holding alleged Al Qaeda terrorists at the US military base in Guantanamo, Cuba, the Spanish High Court ruled that they could only go after

foreigners who had harmed Spanish citizens abroad.

M

eanwhile, Garzon had stepped on too many important toes in the country’s judiciary and they eventually got him for ordering illegal phone taps in the Gurtel corruption case. In February this year, he was disqualified from judicial activities for 11 years which means that at his age, 56, it’s highly unlikely he’ll ever practise his profession in Spain ever again.

B

ut you can’t keep a good judge down, so he went to Argentina where he was welcomed with open arms. The Argentine government decided to appoint him as a legal adviser in human rights matters but it was the descendants of Republicans who had fled Spain after the Civil War who gave him the opportunity to pursue the favourite bee in his bonnet – to put the Franco regime in the dock – something he had tried and failed to do here in Spain. However, his defence of Assange seems to have eclipsed all that for the moment.

A

s for Assange, even if the Brits allow it, I would think twice about going to Ecuador if I were him. No Latin American government – left or right – will put up with the sort of things he got up to at Wikileaks. The left-wing ones will fight for freedom of expression anywhere else but in their own countries and they’re currently using the Assange affair to beat their favourite anti-American drums. If he gets to Ecuador, he should bear in mind that hitmen are very cheap in that part of the world. In any case, wherever he ends up he’ll have to watch his back. The Americans are saying that it’s up to the British, Swedish and Ecuadorian governments to sort out this debacle but, like elephants, they never forget – and they’ll get him sooner or later.

I

suspect Assange will end up allowing himself to be extradited to Sweden if the government there promises not to pass him on to the Americans. The charges he faces in Sweden carry sentences of two or three years in jail if he’s found guilty and his subsequent appeals will keep him in the eyes of the world – which seems to be what he wants. Rather that than a sordid death at the hands of a hitman, which will be forgotten within 24 hours.

W

hatever happens, he has no-one to blame but himself. How on earth did he think he could take on the US and get away with it?

n 1969, El Salvador and Honduras fought a short but bloody battle called the “Football War” caused by the tensions and riots that broke out during three-game elimination matches between the two national teams in the World Cup preliminaries. And of course the press on both sides was there to egg everybody on. I began reading up about the Football War recently after a pitch dispute in the media broke out last week between “mother country” Spain and its tiny former colony in the Caribbean – a mouse that has been roaring.

L

ast Wednesday, Spain’s national team travelled to Puerto Rico to play a friendly with the island’s Blue Hurricane squad in which La Roja won 12 after a strange match. But just seconds after that game, all hell broke loose. Spanish sportswriters were in a frenzy, opening the internet's virtual floodgates with harsh observations and criticisms about the total lack of organisation, including the poor quality of the local transmission (actually it did look as if it was beamed from Paraguay), picked up by state broadcaster RTVE, and starting some 15 minutes late – a venial sin in football – because some bigshot insisted on shaking the hands of our rock stars.

T

he sportswriters were just as critical of Vicente Del Bosque for agreeing to allow such a spectacle to take place. First, questions were raised about the wisdom of commanding the No. 1 to fly more than eight hours across the Atlantic to play unprepared Puerto Ricans who rank 138th among the world's football clubs. Then Atlético de Madrid’s Juanfran Torres was injured and might be out for good part of the season, which infuriated not only the press corps but also the other half who live in the Spanish capital and are not Real fans. Yet, in all fairness, the match was for a good cause – a fundraiser to help a local autistic children’s association – but that important fact got lost in the mayhem. The Spanish team was paid the equivalent of €2 million for its royal appearance.

T

he sportswriters from the major Spanish dailies may have been a bit rough on the Puerto Ricans in their biting chronicles, but they reported nothing but the truth without exaggeration. “As if Michael Phelps were to go to Equatorial Guinea to swim against Eric Moussambani, Spain crossed the pond to face Puerto Rico,” wrote El Pais’ Cayetano Rios, who called the match “a farce.” Miguel Herguerdas, of El Mundo,

also described it as “a sloshed summery” encounter and added: “It could be that in the island they look down on football or don't know the rules. The fact was that every time one of theirs had the ball, or there was bad play, even a headshot, applause would break out." Criticisms were also lodged about the stadium and the semi-synthetic grass put on the pitch. Yes, Del Bosque should have thought twice about signing on this past spring to play this friendly, just days before La Liga was to start. And after a long EuroCup summer, his players needed time to relax to train with their own clubs.

F

acebook went bonkers, with numbers of outraged Puerto Ricans saying they were angry and hurt over the Spanish media’s bad treatment. Having lived and worked for 13 years in the island, and because a number of my 228 Facebook friends are Puerto Rican journalists, I was caught in the middle. But again, I insisted, that no one wrote anything that wasn’t true. Many in Puerto Rico bemoaned the fact that the press didn’t focus on the positive efforts made by the island’s organisers to bring a world class team to their island, but that is not the business of sports writers. They are there to follow the match, analyse what went wrong, point out the conditions players are facing, and of course follow their national team.

B

ut instead of reflecting on errors committed or admitting that it is indeed impossible to again host an event of such calibre without ironing out the wrinkles, the island wanted payback. On Friday, a writer at the leading daily El Nuevo Día penned a satirical piece, poorly using archaic Cervantes Spanish, as an offensive retaliation. Written as an open letter to the sportswriters of this country, this childish prank is a sarcastic “apologetic” missive for the bad game hosted, which accuses the Spanish journalists of xenophobia and tells them what they can do with their stories. The flawed attempt drew on Puerto Rico’s zeal for cyber revenge. I was personally told off on Facebook when I mentioned that one of the basics taught in J-school is not to make fun of anyone’s language, past or present, when conveying information. You only see that done in third world, third rate publications. Yes, the football war has started, but it seems to be just a one-sided battle for now. My Spanish colleagues are currently enmeshed in La Liga while, unfortunately, everyone has forgotten about that important autistic children’s foundation.

the

e suit of the future for the disabled? 50 people gather at the launch of a new technology shop in a science park outside Cambridge recently. Dubbed a "store opening" by its hosts, the US firm Ekso, it is quite unlike most retail events. There are no shelves, tills, or counters; no free samples or catalogues. Instead, Ekso suggests that guests – about a quarter of whom are in wheelchairs – might try out one of its devices, in conjunction with the private physiotherapy firm, Prime Physio. Then, in months or years to come, the wealthier among them could walk away with some of Ekso's kit. "Technology is reaching the point where those who have been disabled can be re-enabled," says Andy Hayes, Ekso's managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, in his address. A slide of the bionic superhero Iron Man pops up on an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.

Ready to wear Ekso Bionics has produced the first ready-towear, motorised exoskeleton to be made

commercially available in Britain. Called the Ekso, this battery-powered robot suit enables paraplegics to stand and walk. Though this technology is at the forefront of the field, the Ekso is not the first of its kind. British disability campaigner Claire Lomas completed the London Marathon earlier this year using an Israeli-made ReWalk suit; Össur, the Icelandic prosthetics firm that makes the South African athlete Oscar Pistorius's carbonfibre legs has a line of electrically powered feet and knees; Honda produces a lightweight device for users with minor walking difficulties.

Not cheap Yet Ekso is notable not only for its technology and the price tag (£100,000 for the exoskeleton which it hopes to lower to £50,000 within the next two years), but its ambitious plans. It sees a time when ablebodied users will be strapping on machines too. In an age when Tony Stark's exoskeleton tops the boxoffice charts in Avengers Assemble, and Pistorius competes in both the

Olympics and Paralympics, Ekso thinks there's a demand for robotic suits that not only aid disabled people, but enhance the abilities of everyone. The firm's CEO, Eythor Bender, has said he believes exoskeletons are "the jeans of the future", offering assistance with manual labour. "Shipyard workers could probably only hold a 10kg anglegrinder for a couple of minutes," says Hayes. "Whereas if they had a bionic suit, they could work for hours and reduce costs." Indeed, Ekso's target market is wide open. In 2005, it produced the Exohiker, a bionic walking aid that allows ramblers to trek with heavier loads. In 2009 it developed and licensed a bionic hiking device, the Human Universal Load Carrier, to US defence firm Lockheed Martin. Next year it will launch a product aimed at people recovering from strokes. Theoretically, Ekso's suits could find all sorts of uses. In practice, their applications are more limited.

Trying it out The audience watches as 24-year-old Suzanne Edwards dons the device and takes a few steps. Edwards had been a surfing instructor until she suffered a spinal cord injury in January 2011. She is delighted to be able to rise from her chair and walk. However, two of Ekso's staff have to guide her movements, and it's hard to see how it could replace her wheelchair permanently. Ekso doesn't claim to offer a simple fix for paralysis. Yet it does believe that regular exercise in the suit could help in other ways, such as increasing bone density, improving bladder functions, and aiding weight loss.

Detractors However, not everyone in the audience is convinced. Dr Roger Fitzwater was a general practitioner for 25 years until he broke his back in a building accident two decades ago. After the Ekso event he explains his misgivings. "It's a fantastic piece of engineering," he says, "and clearly a work in

progress." Yet he still feels Ekso's emphasis on getting wheelchair users to walk again is misplaced. "What people don't understand is that once you've become accustomed to your paraplegia, walking isn't very important," says Fitzwater. "If you're in pain, that's the most important thing. Then its bladder function, then bowels, then sex, then body image." "When you see what robotics can do, it's moving forward very fast. I can see it getting a lot better, and having applications in other fields. It's great that they produced it," he adds. "But at the moment it's only for people with big compensation payouts."

What next? There are many reasons to suggest that exoskeletons won't catch on. Yet as technology progresses and prices drop,

the bionic age appears to be beckoning. So, why shouldn't a firm like Ekso make a suit to aid paraplegics? Or a suit for office workers to commute in? Or indeed, a suit for soldiers, runners, and anyone else who has the means and ambition to augment their body? With every passing month, in the field of bionics, the "why not?" question is getting harder to answer. For further information, visit eksobionics.com

The News brings you a press release from Ryanair in respect of recent emergency landings that they say were incorrectly reported in the Spanish press. Due to severe thunderstorms over Madrid on Thursday 26th July Spanish air traffic control instructed a number of inbound aircraft (including three Ryanair aircraft) to divert to and hold over Valencia Airport. Having held over Valencia for 50 minutes, 68 minutes and 69 minutes

Pets of the week

after their scheduled landing time in Madrid, Ryanair’s three aircraft (following standard industry safety procedures) requested air traffic control permission to land immediately as they reached their reserve fuel minimums, which allow each aircraft to operate for an additional 30 minutes (approx 300 miles) of flying. All three aircraft landed normally with reserve fuel levels (of approx 30 mins or 300 miles of flying) remaining.

These two are Tom and Tommy. They are black male mixed breed dogs of approximately 28cms., born around January 2009. Tom and Tommy are only two of many rescued animals looking for a good home. Tommy along with his sibling Tom were found in the bins, dumped and abandoned. They were rescued and brought to FAMA, where they have been cared for and loved by all the volunteers. They are happy boys now, and full of fun. They love to play, go for walks, and have lots of cuddles, they are very affectionate. They do not have to be adopted together, but it would be lovely if they could be as they are very close and they are looking for a good home and a loving family. If you are interested in meeting Tom and Tommy, please contact Pat on Tel 620 354 885 for further information or visit their NEW website www.famaspain.com

Dogs’ paws on most kinds of floors that have been in direct sun light can quickly get burnt pads – this includes pavements and the beach. Pet owners should be aware that a dog’s feet, like those of humans, need to be well looked after as sore feet can affect walking causing joint problems in the long term. Dogs will lick their burnt paws often causing a secondary infection. Pure coco butter rubbed into the pads helps keep the pads in good condition and prevent cracking. Only a small amount of coco butter should be used making sure not too much goes on to the paws – coco butter is totally safe for your dog to lick. At this time of year we see many dogs with fungal infections inbetween the pads, the main sign to look out for is constant licking of the paws which get quite smelly. Fungal infections are very common here in Spain and thrive in dark, damp places –

your dog’s paws being the perfect breeding ground. Check your dog’s fur in between the pads which must be kept clean and dry. For long haired dogs it is best to ask your groomer to remove as much fur as possible from in-between the pads. It is quite common for there to be smelly matts in the paw fur which is often caused by small pebbles, grass seeds, chewing gum etc all of which can affect your dog’s walking. Keep your dog’s pads as clean as possible, free of fur and deal with paw licking immediately. If in doubt contact your vet. BATHING is an ideal way to keep your dog cool during the summer months. You can spray your dog with a light mist of water or if you do choose to bath and shampoo your dog regularly, then you should use a dog shampoo with a ph balance suitable for regular washing. Pure Aloa Vera shampoo for dogs will not only clean but condition the skin as well.

Poppy Fayre success The Coin Branch of the Royal British Legion held a Poppy Fayre at the Miralmonte Restaurant on Wednesday August 15th. All the usual games of chance were represented ranging from “Guess the number of sweets in a jar” to rolling the dice at the “Crown and Anchor”. Games of skill were also available with pitch and putt on the patio proving to be very popular. Many of the branch gardeners brought an abundance of produce from their prolific gardens and the marrows had to be seen to be believed. Poppy appeal officer Vic Dean was delighted with the result when the Chairman of the Branch Jo Taylor announced that €358 had been raised for the Poppy Appeal.

Appeal for water Kim’s Animal Rescue at Atalaya Macora is having a problem. Their well has dried up and they are appealing for people to donate water, either by bringing bottles of water or by contributing to a tanker to keep the animals hydrated. The local council used to supply a tanker of 10,000 litres for around €49 when people’s wells dried up in the area but now they’re telling people that they’re not doing that anymore and a single tanker of 8,000

is costing €90 from a private company which lasts about four days – something that hardpressed animal charities simply can’t afford. So, if you have water bottles that you could fill up either with well or tap water and drop them off to help them, that would be much appreciated. For areas where you can drop the water off, or if you would like to donate towards a tanker, please call 634 173 652.

Passionate about photography and Malaga, Magee never leaves home without his camera, always ready to capture another unique Malaga moment. Unfortunately, this 12-yearold habit took a very sad and unfortunate turn recently. On Friday 4th August, while walking home in the early hours of the morning, Magee was attacked and left unconscious on the street. When he regained consciousness, he realised that apart from being beaten up, his attackers had stolen his beloved camera, his wallet, his mobile phone and even his glasses. Phil’s friends, shocked at

the news, decided to organise an event to raise funds in order for Phil to be able to replace his camera.

One of Phil’s closest friends, Giuseppe Zanin, owner of the bar El Compas en Calle Compás de la Victoria, 42 (opposite la Iglesia de la Victoria) has offered his restaurant to hold a fund-raising exhibition of Magee’s photography. This public event will take place on Saturday 25th August starting at 8.30 p.m. – midnight. Works will include prints and originals by Philip Magee ranging in price from € 20 to €160. e Expendables 2 By Simon West Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris Two years after their first outing, in which our ageing but feisty heroes made a very reasonable impression at the box office and had a blast kicking ass, the franchise returns for Part Two. It’s again written by Sly Stallone, but he has stepped out of the director’s role and handed the task to Simon West and it shows – for the better. Barney Ross (Stallone) and

his team of mercenaries, including Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Jet Li are “back for war”. Willis reprises his role as CIA man Mr Church, and Arnie appears again as paymaster Trench, who commissions the gang to head into deepest Albania to track down some exSoviet weapons grade nuclear waste before the bad guys, led by JeanClaude Van Damme get to it first and wreak havoc.

Van Damme famously turned down the invitation to join his old action hero buddies in the first movie but makes up for lost time with an on-form performance as the psychotic Valian. The old guard are joined by a young female Expendable Maggie and gunman Billy The Kid, but cleverly keep all the best lines for themselves. Chuck Norris makes a cameo

appearance and delivers a laugh out loud line and this time Bruce and Arnie aren’t kept in the shadows but are out there putting their bulging muscles to good effect with Sly and his gang. There are laughs – most of them intentional – and ferocious B movie mayhem. You can bet on it not winning any awards – but don’t bet on it not coming back for a third outing. All great fun and fabulously old fashioned action.

Nominated for an Academy Award, this powerful, true WWII tale celebrates the triumph of the human spirit in a time when all hope is lost. A sewer worker and petty thief in Nazioccupied Poland agrees to help hide a group of Jews in the town’s sewers. But what starts out as a straightforward business arrangement soon turns into something unexpected, as the unlikely alliance seeps deeper into his conscience and they form an incredibly close bond. Based on the real life killings, the virgin of Juarez connects issues of politics, fanaticism and religion with murder and violence in Mexico and east L.A. While on assignment investigating a string of unsolved brutal female murders in the border town of Cuidad Juarez Los Angeles based reporter Karina Danes (Minnie Driver) meets Mariela (Ana Claudia Talancón), a rare survivor of one of the vicious attacks. During her recovery, Mariela sees visions of the Virgin Mary and experiences the phenomenon of stigmata.

within the human soul, In Darkness is an emotional tour de force that will stay with audiences for years to come.

Her story soon draws a devout following while her sermons galvanise a public in need of hope.

Scott´s death. I was deeply saddened and thought that I would dedicate this week’s column to him and my favourite Scott movies. ony Scott is probably Tdirecting better known for huge action packed blockbusters like: “Top Gun”, “Crimson Tide”, “Enemy Of the State”, “Spy Game”, “Man On Fire”, “The Last Boy Scout”, etc. However, as successful as these movies were, they won´t be the ones I remember him for. y two favourite Tony M Scott movies are “The Hunger” and “True Romance”. In 1983 Scott made his first feature film “The Hunger” based on a book by Whitley Streiber. Catherine Deneuve, and David Bowie star in an unusual vampire story. This movie has substance, style, sensuality, and a brain. It lets you think for yourself, Scott created an adult horror film that returned a sophisticated style to the beleaguered genre. The story is about centuries old Egyptian vampiress Miriam Blaylock and her husband John who live an opulent lifestyle in a posh townhouse in New York City. However, John, like all of Miriam's previous lovers, suddenly ages into a wizened old man after 300 years, so Miriam decides to replace him with strongwilled geriatric research specialist Sarah Roberts. For me “The Hunger” is a cult classic. ven though his second EGun”feature film was “Top (which has probably sold more Ray Bans worldwide, than 28 years worth of adverts) it´s not on my list. My second favourite Scott movie, is the 1993 “True Romance”.

Tarantino had to sacrifice “True Romance” and “Natural Born Killers” to afford to make it. So, taking into account that “True Romance” was written by Quentin Tarantino, Scott was able to make it his own, whilst keeping a Tarantino taste to it. (I won´t talk about “Natural Born Killers” as it´s very upsetting, shame on you Oliver Stone!) ack to Mr Scott. This B crime-romance is about a comic book store clerk and film buff Clarence Worley who goes to a Sonny Chiba triple feature at a Detroit movie theatre for his birthday. There he meets Alabama, seemingly by chance. They go to a diner for pie after the theatre and engage in flirtatious conversation before heading to Clarence's apartment. A few hours later, she tearfully confesses that she is a call girl hired by Clarence's boss as a birthday present. She has fallen in love with Clarence and he with her. The next day, they marry though Alabama's volatile pimp, Drexl Spivey (played by Gary Oldman), makes Clarence uneasy. didn't set out Twhentoarantino make a fairy tale he wrote it but the changes that Tony Scott made (as small as they were) really changed the theme of the film and made it lighter. (Personally I would have really liked to see what the movie would have been like if Tarantino had directed it.) ony Scott was a truly Tleaves marvellous director, he behind some of the best action films ever made – and through those movies his legend will live on.

Blood group 'linked to heart disease' People from blood groups A, B and AB are more at risk of heart disease than those with the more common blood type O, according to a study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. Those with the rarest blood group, AB, are the most vulnerable – they are 23% more likely to suffer from heart disease than those with blood group O. Blood group AB has been linked to inflammation, which plays an important role in artery damage. The study also found that for individuals with blood group B the risk of heart disease increased by 11%, and for blood type A, by 5%. There is also evidence that blood group A is associated with higher levels of the 'bad' type of cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), a waxy substance that can clog arteries. Those with blood group O may benefit from

increased levels of a chemical which helps blood flow and clotting. The researchers said that while people cannot change their blood type, their findings could help physicians to better understand who is at risk of developing heart disease. The British Heart Foundation stressed it is important that we all look after ourselves to reduce

'Miserable Monday' myth dispelled

After looking at a Gallup telephone poll of 340,000 people, US investigators found Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are loathed just as much as Mondays – though people were definitely happier as they approached the weekend, lending support for the concept of "that Friday feeling". They said: "Despite our global beliefs about lousy Mondays, we conclude that

Similarly, claims that the Monday of the last full week of January – dubbed "blue Monday" – is the most depressing of the whole year have been debunked by other studies. The researchers said it is the contrast in mood from Sunday to Monday that has led to Mondays being unfairly singled out.

The image of cereal bars as a healthy snack is a "myth", according to a study by Which? The consumer group found all but one of the 30 bars it analysed were high in sugar, with more than half containing over 30% sugar. One bar, Nutri-Grain Elevenses, contained nearly four teaspoons – more than in a small can of cola and 20% of the recommended daily allowance. Other snacks it analysed were found to be high in fat and saturated fat. The study also found that six of the seven cereal bars targeted at children

were high in saturated fat. Which? compared the nutritional content of the bars using the manufacturers' information and applied traffic light labelling to see if the levels of fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt were high, medium or low. The Naked Apple Pie was the only bar in the study that did not contain any added sugar, while the Alpen Light Apple and Sultana was the only one to have three green traffic lights for fat, saturated fat and salt. Which? is calling for manufacturers to reduce sugar and fat in food products marketed to

A spokeswoman for Kellogg's, which makes the Nutri-Grain Elevenses bar and some of the other snacks tested, said: "We're confused as to why anyone would call a Nutri-Grain Elevenses snack a cereal bar. Famous for the films that made Tom Cruise’s name, Top Gun and Days of under

Another legend dies - director Tony Scott … but family deny he had the brain cancer that was being blamed for the suicide Anthony Scott was born in 1944 in North Shields, England and had a brother, six years older, named Ridley. His first appearance on screen came at the age of 16 in Boy And Bicycle, a film directed by his now world famous brother . He attended Grangefield School, West Hartlepool College of Art and Sunderland Art School and earned a degree from the Royal College of Art. The 68-year-old Tony Scott apparently jumped to his death “without hesitation” from a Los Angeles bridge at around 12.30pm on Sunday, missing a tourist boat by a matter of feet. Scott had been in hospital earlier this month, telling friends he was there for a

hip operation. Initial reports saying that he was suffering from an inoperable brain cancer have been strenuously denied by his third wife and mother of his twin sons Max and Frank who were born in 2000. The sudden death shook Hollywood and film fans as the successful director apparently had everything to live for. Tony Scott’s films grossed more than $2 billion and his Top Gun and Days of Thunder were the films that shot actor Tom Cruise to worldwide fame. He was also in the early stages of developing a sequel to cult classic movie Top Gun, that was the biggest grossing film of 1986 at $354 million, with Tom Cruise and

producer Jerry Bruckheimer. It was set for release in 2014. It had been rumoured that Cruise's character would return as an instructor for a new class of recruits – but the actor said they were 'still working on it'. A visibly shaken Cruise said: “Tony was my dear friend and I will really miss him ... My deepest sorrow and thoughts are with his family at this time.” Scott, who ran Scott Free Productions with his brother, was also working on a movie called Killing Lincoln, based on the bestseller by Bill O'Reilly, and has a film, Out of the Furnace, starring Christian Bale due for release next year. Scott was an avid rock

Agony Angel Crystal Clear Anne explains the Tarot The origins of the Tarot are mysterious. All that we know for certain is that Tarot decks similar to those we know today i.e. 56 minor cards and 22 major arcana cards have survived from the 15th century, France and Italy with Romany and Indian influences. In its long journey from ancient times to the present the Tarot has absorbed all of the mystical influences it has met along the way and still continues to evolve. The Tarot is designed to relate pictorially what you are feeling inside. It reflects your psychological and emotional state as well as showing you people and events involved in your life. Each Tarot card is a symbol and each card contains symbols. This is the principle of the Tarot deck which is not to be used as a toy, or for a laugh, or handled by children. The cards are best respected and accepted as a mystic tool. The secret of the Tarot

lies not in the cards themselves but in your understanding of them. They are designed to reach deep into the subconscious. Treat them with respect and love to guide you and your clients. Tarot can be another very powerful tool in psychic development. They have been described as the gateway to the soul or a means of uniting the body and soul. The detailed and thought-provoking images are capable of opening your mind into the realms of higher consciousness and, as with every psychic tool, some people respond more favourably than others! Working with Tarot is not something that can be rushed so you will need patience and perseverance if you would like to use the Tarot as a form of psychic work. Today’s Tarot cards are made of 78 cards. There are 22 major arcana known as “The Secret”. The remaining cards are known

as the minor arcana and the 56 cards consist of four suits of 14 cards each – Ace through to ten plus 4 court cards, a page, knight, queen and king. The four suits are swords which equals the air, cups for water, wands (also named batons, staves, rods or flames) equal fire, and earth which are pentangles also known as rings, coins or stones. So for now until next time, may you be safe and protected, may you be happy and healthy, may you be peaceful and strong and may you carry your life with ease and grace. (Buddhist blessing.) The scariest thing in my life is the first morning of production on all my movies. It’s the fear of failing, the loss of face and a sense of guilt that everybody puts their faith in you and not coming through.” He apparently left a suicide note but the contents have not yet been revealed. Song of hope

Low budget film gets backing

Pupils from a Tottenham school have released a song composed after last year’s London riots. The song, “Everybody Dreams” was written by children from Gladesmore Community School in the north London borough in response to the negative image that had become attached to their area.

A film that tells the story of a woman searching for her sister after she goes missing from a fish factory in the remote Scottish Highlands has secured a distributor in North America.

The song has received the backing of more than 100 celebrities including DJ Chris Moyles, and has been re-mixed by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame. Teachers hope to establish a school orchestra with the proceeds of the sale of the recording.

The film shot on a budget of just £4,000 was shot in Assynt and Buckie in the far northern highlands of Scotland, and in Edinburgh. Edinburgh based director David Hutchinson said his chiller script had been influenced by the murders of two Eastern European women in Scotland.

played major roles. The Last Boy Scout (1991) – Bruce Willis starred in this big-budget action film that under-performed at the box office. Crimson Tide (1995) – Another success for Scott in this thriller starring Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington .

Caroline Bradford What on earth is all the fuss about Julian Assange all about? There’s a big hoo hah going on between the UK and Ecuador where the aforementioned Assange has taken refuge after he had gone through all the legal processes he could think of, and lost, for not being extradited to his counrty of origin, Sweden. Due processs of law had been completed and the man, if he steps, sits, or hopscotches on to British soil, must be extradited in accordance with the laws of England. Now we get threats from Ecuadorian officials saying that if the British authorities set foot inside the Ecuadorian Embassy (one assumes they

mean without their permission) it would be “suicide”. Assange appeared on their balcony going on about the freedom of speech and the press (not that Ecuador has a good reputation for upholding same by any means – something Assange is apparently ignoring while it suits him) but that is not the issue here at all. Assange is very good at putting up smoke screens. The man is not being extradited for his, I think, rather nasty, Wikileaks site. He’s being extradited because we want nothing to do with someone who is accused of sexual assault in another country.

Kevin O’Leary I was really saddened to hear of the death of Winnie Johnson recently. A lot of people probably won’t know who she even is but this is a brave lady who has spent decades pleading to know where her son is buried so that she could bury him in a Christian grave. Keith Bennett was her son. He was murdered by the infamous Moors Murderers, Ian Bradey and Myra Hindley in the 1960s. Nobody knew what had

So, where should the UK go from here? I should imagine that UK authorities have no intention of storming the embassy to get this creepy little man back. If the Ecuadorians want to feed and clothe him, let them do it. But make no mistake, the law must be upheld and if he steps foot on to British soil, he must be arrested immediately and deported. Sweden has an excellent record on human rights issues but, if they find it necessary to deport him to face the sexual assault charges in the US, so be it. It’s about time Assange realised he is not above the law.

Address withheld happened until 1985 when Ian Brady told the press that they had murdered another two children including Keith. All Winnie Johnson wanted to know was where they had put her son but both Brady and Hindley either couldn’t or wouldn’t reveal the location of his grave on Saddleworth Moor. Winnie had been suffering from terminal cancer. She was so poorly that her family could not tell her that Brady’s advocate had told a TV show that she had

a letter indicating where he was, and Winnie has now died never knowing where her son is. Let’s hope there’s an afterlife and they have now been reunited. Brady has been indicating for years that he is tired with life and wants to die. He is permanently hospitalised and fed against his will. I believe this should carry on. Why should this monster get away with what he wants when Winnie never did?

trying to make a difference to kids in Morocco. So, who are Dental Mavericks? We are a group of outgoing, energetic and adventurous entrepreneurs connected to dentistry whose aim is to give back. Back in 2010, after a visit to a remote fishing village in El Jebah, North East Morocco, Tony and Cally Gedge from Marketing Pirates of Dentistry had a vision to help Moroccan children gain access to pain free dentistry. With seven founding trustees a new adventurous charity started to take shape and, never before undertaken by any UK dentist, Michael Oliver, Chris Branfield, Teresa and Mike Day, Jas Sandhu, Cally and Tony Gedge, took part in an eight day charity expedition from September 24th to October 1st 2010. Since then, each year in September Dental Mavericks

make the trip to El Jebah to treat up to 600 children. This year the number of dentists has increased and they aim to treat more children. Fundraising and preparations are already well under way for the 2012 visit, where the Mavericks' aim is to continue making a difference to the Dental Health of these youngsters. During the next expedition in September this year, as well as getting the children out of the misery of daily dental pain, the team are planning to offer treatment as well as extractions. Our aim is to raise £10,000 to buy a Dental Ambulance to enable them to provide pain free dental care for over 600 Moroccan children. If you would like to find out more about what we do or if you want to make a donation go to www.dentalmavericks.org Please help us to help the children.

e Summer Triangle I think that most people know that there are groups of stars in the night sky that form dot-to-dot patterns to make up the constellations. But there are also several unofficial groupings of stars that can make patterns known as asterisms, and at this time of the year there is a very prominent asterism directly overhead.

I

f you go outside around 10.00 pm and look directly above you, you will see a very bright star; this is Vega in the constellation of Lyra the harp. Now look to the left of Vega and you should be able to see another bright star called Deneb. Deneb marks the tail of Cygnus the swan. The last star in the trio is Altair in the constellation Aquila the eagle.

E

ach of the three stars is part of their own separate constellation but in the mid 1950’s British Astronomer Sir Patrick Moore noticed the asterism and coined the phrase ‘The Summer Triangle’.

A

ll three stars appear to be more or less the same brightness as one other but in truth they are vastly different in size, brightness and distance from us. Altair is the closest star out of the three; it is 16 light years away and 10 times brighter than our Sun. The light that you are seeing left Altair in 1996 and has been travelling toward us at 186,000 miles per second.

V B

ega is 52 times brighter than the Sun and is 25 light years away. What were you doing in 1987 when the light from Vega began its journey towards us? ut Deneb is a super-giant 70,000 times bigger than the Sun and a massive 1800 light years away, it is one of the most distant stars that you can see with the naked eye. The Romans were in England when the light that you can see left Deneb. Because of the massive distance to Deneb measurements of its true size and distance can only be guessed at, as there is no real way of establishing something so far away from us.

T

he summer triangle is such a conspicuous pattern that it can easily be recognised and can be used to help find other constellations in the area. Vega is the brightest of the three and shines with a dazzling blue/white colour. Once you have identified Vega try to make out the rest of the constellation of Lyra the Harp; it is four fainter stars forming a crooked square box below Vega. Directly

between the two lower stars of Lyra is one of my favourite deep sky objects called M57 the Ring Nebular. M57 is the remains of a star that died many thousands of years ago. As the name suggests it forms a lovely ring or doughnut shape that can easily be seen with binoculars looking like a small fuzzy blob. But through a small telescope the whole of the ring shape can be seen.

D

eneb marks the tail of Cygnus the swan flying gracefully, wings stretched out, across the sky. It has also been called the Northern Cross as the seven stars form a huge perfect crucifix. The last star of the cross that marks the swan’s head is actually a double star called Alberio and again this star is always on my list to look at with a telescope. It is the striking difference in colour of the two stars that make it so interesting. One star is vivid blue while the other is bright yellow and being so close together when you see them through a telescope the colour really is very dramatic.

C

ygnus also happens to lie right along the path of the Milky Way and if you happen to live in a very dark area then this is the best time of the year to see the Milky Way directly overhead and stretching right across the sky horizon to horizon. The Milky Way is actually part of our own Galaxy and is made up of millions of stars all so far away that they appear to merge into one faint milky river running across the sky. But if you sweep around the area with binoculars I guarantee that you will be rewarded with tens of thousands of stars. Enjoy your Stargazing!

Millionaire killed after crashing supercar

A millionaire property developer was killed when the £500,000 Italian supercar he was driving careered off the road and ploughed into a fence. William Baranos, who was in his 50s, is believed to have been driving at high speed in a 30mph zone when he lost control of the Pagani Zonda. The front end of the car was torn off when it hit a metal fence running along the perimeter of a building supplies depot. His body was found 10ft away, after the car’s doors were ripped off. He was not thought to have been wearing a seat belt.

Pedrosa blitzes Brickyard Dani Pedrosa has strengthened his bid for the 2012 MotoGP World title after dominating his rivals on the way to a second win of the season at Indianapolis.

Spies leads Pedrosa early in the race

ahead by lap four and never looked back, the Spaniard crossing the line 11 seconds up on Lorenzo to add to his earlier Sachsenring success. Lorenzo and Dovizioso made up the other podium places with Pedrosa’s teammate Casey Stoner a further three seconds back. Cal Crutchlow's perfect run of top ten finishes was brought to an unsatisfying conclusion as he slid out for the first time this season. The British rider came into the American event as one of only two riders to have finished each

race inside the top eight this season (the other being Dani Pedrosa), but his Indianapolis challenge would end after just ten laps when he low-sided at turn four.

Ben Spies reveals tension with Yamaha Ben Spies, who announced via the internet that he was leaving Yamaha on the eve of last month's US MotoGP, has revealed behind-the-scenes tension with a senior member of the company. After being forced out of second place

by a massive engine failure in Sunday's Indianapolis Grand Prix – the latest in a relentless run of race day mishaps and bad luck – Spies was asked about his level of frustration. Whilst reflecting on the setbacks he has suffered in 2012, Spies claimed that he was told 'not to show up' for the US GP if he wasn't going to ride at a hundred percent. "There's frustration, but it's kind of almost got to a laughing point for me,” Spies began. “I'm really not even upset about it. It's just been so many things, one after another. You don't know how to respond to it. "At Mugello, we had food poisoning, and that was a bad experience. I tried everything I could to do what we could, but it was a bad result. "I was told by somebody at Yamaha that if I'm not going to ride a hundred percent at Laguna (Seca), don't show up.

Toyota’s new GT86 sport coupe has claimed its first UK motorsport victory, winning the third round of the Toyota Sprint Series at Barkston Heath on Sunday 12th August. Driven and prepared by Adrian Smith of Fensport in conjunction with Autocar magazine, the car was competing in the Toyota-sponsored event for the first time and duly won both its class and the event overall. It was also a first win for a rear wheel drive car with a normally aspirated engine since the series began in 2007. Smith posted the quickest time of

54.55 seconds around the 0.75-mile Lincolnshire course, six hundredths of a second quicker than the second placed modified Celica GT-Four ST205 of Iain Gard. Third place went to Autocar’s Steve Sutcliffe who co-drove the GT86 with Smith. The GT86 used a standard 2.0-litre “boxer” engine and unmodified sixspeed gearbox. The only changes made to the road car specification were the suspension, wheels and track tyres. To save weight the interior was stripped out and fitted with a racing seat.

Super Car’s UK Debut The Slovenian super sports car from Tushek – the Renovatio T500 – will make its UK debut at Salon Privé on 5th September 2012. Never seen before in the UK, the Renovatio T500 is a lean, light and technologically advanced

super sports car engineered for both road and track performance. The hand-built €300,000 Renovatio is made to order and has an Audi-sourced 4.2-litre 444bhp V8 engine, hits 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 193mph.

Having finished all but one race on the podium this season, Pedrosa came to Indianapolis having manoeuvred himself into a convincing title challenging position, 23 points behind Jorge Lorenzo, but ahead of Repsol Honda team-mate Casey Stoner. Nicky Hayden did not start after being briefly knocked unconscious in an accident during qualifying, while Casey Stoner also crashed in qualifying, tearing ligaments in his ankle, but chose to start. However, with Stoner hampered by his ankle injury and Lorenzo enduring an unusually indifferent weekend on the normally consistent Yamaha, Pedrosa took full advantage to reduce the overall lead to 18 points with seven races remaining. Starting from pole position, Pedrosa was beaten to the first turn by Ben Spies, he was back

Malaga do their talking on the Park Celta Vigo 0 - 1 Malaga After a troubled time over the summer losing their strikeforce, Malaga travelled to Vigo knowing the home team would be fully charged up for their first game in La Liga for 5 years. With no new faces in the lineup, Malaga's spirit was showing through as they started brightly. Joaquin tested Celta's keeper Varas

after 12 minutes and on 20 minutes after a break, another shot was well saved, Isco should have netted the

rebound but shot high and wide. Celta were coming more into the game with Tunez heading just wide and then Lopez had a shot deflected over the bar. In the second half De Lucas had three chances in 8 minutes for the home side, Caballero saving well twice. Pellegrini then played his ace card, bringing on 16-

year-old Fabrice Olinga and the Argentine Buenanotte. On 77 minutes Isco hit the bar and the rebound fell to

Fabrice who shot wide. That did not phase the youngster, and on 85 minutes Buenanotte nutmegged the defender to cross for Fabrice to put the ball in using his thigh. At just 16 years and 98 days, Fabrice Olinga exceeded Iker Muniain, as the youngest player to score in La Liga. Other players that make up the list of young scorers are Xisco Nadal (16 years and 353 days), Juan Mena (17 years and 36 days) and Bojan Krkic (17 years and 53 days). Celta should have equalised in the dying seconds, a great back heel set up Cabral who smashed the ball against the bar with the goal beckoning. A great three points and a great confidence booster with Panathinaikos in the Champions league qualifier this evening. Report by Scott Forbes

Superbowl take a day trip to Miraflores! It started with a phone call from Craig Lewis (Superbowl captain). He asked how the new green at Miraflores was performing

and on hearing that it's bowling extremely well he said he'd like to pay a visit to the club with a few members from Superbowl

Bowlers try out the new Green

to try it out if that was possible. We said we'd be delighted and a couple of days later what had started as a "few"– Craig called to say he already had 28 people and was expecting a few more! The day arrived and including a couple of members from ours and other clubs we had 36 people playing. The participants varied from well-known experienced bowlers including Don & Pat Fisher, Terry & Maureen

A good turnout of members and guests left Coin in the dark on Thursday morning to start before the temperatures started to rise. Santa Maria looked good as always and its presentation was superb. A fairly short course, which suited the members who are not big hitters, like myself – that is why I didn’t come last this time. The last players came into the clubhouse before the hot conditions prevailed, which made the early start worthwhile. Results as follows: Nearest the pin hole 15 Geoff Heading .(Nice to see you back Geoff.) Nearest the pin in two shots hole 11 Dave Haworth. Longest drive hole 18 Luke Robinson. 1st team winners with

121 points were Andy Macfarlane, Mark Edmunson, Joe King and Heikki Kontinnen. Overall winners all with 39 points were sorted on countback and were as follows. In third place Joe King. Second place Duncan Burrell. First place Jan Versteeg. Best guest with 34 points Lee Ramayon. The individual competition was won by Charles Randell with 38 points beating Ian Brewer who managed 31 points. Well played Charles. Terry’s par three competition, Hole 7 not claimed, hole 10 Gerry Owens, hole 12 Dave Wrigglesworth and hole 17 Jan Versteeg. Overall winner with 12 points Joe King.

Duncan Burrell was playing his last game with us as a member, as he is returning to the UK. I have been a friend of Duncan’s for many years and myself and all the members will miss him immensely. We all wish him great success in any new ventures he seeks. There is always a place for you in our club whenever you visit. Bye Duncan and God bless you. As always the members would like to thank Terry Birtles our Captain, Andy Macfarlane and Dave Haworth for their organisation. Our thanks again go to Elaine and her staff at Lainey’s for the nibbles they supplied, and putting up with us unruly mob.

Barrett, John & Shirley Owen, Manuel Batista & "Saint" to new young bowlers who'd never visited Miraflores previously. The format for the day was triples and Craig organised it so that everybody played four games of four ends each so that all the participants had the opportunity to try different rinks. Craig had put up a prize for the winning triple, but due to a number of incorrectly completed scorecards he drew the winning team of Don, Kathy & Russell. After the game most of the players stayed and enjoyed a barbecue in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere, all agreed that

they'd had a great time and that the green was playing excellently. Finally, entries for the Camero Cup mixed pairs competition on 13th & 14th September are coming in rapidly, the competition is limited to 32 pairs so to avoid disappointment get your entries in now – email info@mirafloreslbc.com or

phone Grant or Carol on 610324587. The competition is being sponsored as usual by Francisco Camero and there are total cash prizes to the value of 375 euros available to the top teams. Entry fee is 8 euros per person and the format will be a round-robin type event played in sets. Report by Grant Frost

Augusta National allows first female members Augusta National, which hosts the Masters, will admit women members for the first time in its 80-year history. The club, situated in Georgia in the United States, has faced criticism for years for not allowing females to join. Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore will become the first women in green jackets when the new season starts in October. "This is a joyous occasion," Augusta National chairman Billy Payne said.

Alan Pardew will not contest FA charge Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will not contest a misconduct charge for pushing an assistant referee during Saturday's 2-1 win over Tottenham. He was sent to the stands for shoving Peter Kirkup while claiming the ball had gone out for a United throw-in. The 51-year-old has until 16:00 BST on Thursday to respond to the Football Association's charge. However, it is believed he will accept the FA's decision and is likely to receive a two-game touchline ban. After Saturday's match, Pardew said: "We're overjoyed about the result but I hold my head in shame." Pardew said he had reminded his players about their behaviour before the game, telling them to follow the example set by competitors at the London Olympics. "I was saying to the

players about the great Olympics and how to set an example and there's me pushing the linesman over," he added. "It was comical. He just happened to be right in front of me." Pardew said he had apologised to the officials after the match and told them he would be saying sorry publicly, too. United were by far the better side in the second half, but Everton defended magnificently with Phil Jagielka getting a special mention from manager David Moyes, who said he was “outstanding”. Sergio Garcia makes Ryder Cup team Sergio Garcia produced a brilliant performance on Monday to clinch a sixth Ryder Cup cap, and that is good news for Europe, it wasn’t the same without Sergio last time round. But it leaves Ian Poulter needing a ‘wild card’ for the second time in three Ryder Cup matches. Garcia won the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina by two shots after the tournament spilled into a Monday finish because of heavy weekend rain. He resumed one in front with 14 holes to play, but stood on the 13th tee sharing the lead with American Chad Campbell and South African Tim Clark. Then came birdies at

four of the next five holes and even with a closing bogey the 32-year-old Spaniard claimed his eighth PGA Tour victory, but his first since the 2008 Players Championship. Poulter had moved into the 10th and last automatic qualifying spot with his joint third-place finish at the US PGA Championship, but looks a certainty for one of captain Jose Maria Olazabal’s two picks next Monday. Garcia, who failed to make the 2010 side and acted as one of Colin Montgomerie’s assistants, said: "Obviously I won a couple of times last year in Europe, but it’s been a while here (in the United States) and it feels great."

Wiggins’ sympathy for team-mate Cav Tour de France winner accepts team-mate Cavendish’s own goals have been compromised for the team. Bradley Wiggins has admitted he would completely understand Mark Cavendish's decision to leave Team Sky should that come to pass. Wiggins became the first Briton to win the Tour de France last month, and although Cavendish won three stages he was unable to challenge for the green points jersey he won in 2011. There have been reports that Cavendish will end his association with the team 12 months into his threeyear contract and Wiggins accepts his team-mate's sprinting goals have been compromised at times this season. Britain's Chris Froome climbed to fourth in the Vuelta a Espana after a third-place finish behind new leader Alejandro Valverde on stage three. Froome, runner-up in the Tour de France and a bronze-medal winner in the London 2012 time trial, beat Spaniard Alberto Contador into fourth place. Contador, who is returning to action after being stripped of a third Tour de France title and receiving a two-year backdated ban for doping, repeatedly attacked in the closing stages. However his compatriot Valverde, second-placed Joaquim Rodriguez and Froome repelled him on each occasion to keep the red jersey out of his clutches and fill the first three finishing spots. .

The 32-year-old was dropped for the third Test against South Africa after allegedly insulting his England team-mates in texts to the tourists. "I love seeing him win as much as anyone else and to see Mark back out on the Tour winning six, seven or eight different stages and challenging for the green, he probably has to go. "At Sky we have set a precedent now. If we are going to dominate cycling and win three Grand Tours

in a year, we have to start building to that GC [general classification] thing. "Unfortunately for Mark, as we saw in the Tour de France, the two don't really go well together. "For his own career, I understand why he has to do it but from a selfish point of view I would like him to stay."
