WORLD NEWS - BIGGEST SINGLE RISK FOR THE WORLD ECONOMY

G20 leaders alarmed over eurozone crisis World leaders meeting at a G20 summit in Mexico have urged Europe to take all necessary measures to overcome the eurozone debt crisis, described by one top official as "the single biggest risk for the world economy". But European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said "the challenges are not only European, they are global". Sunday's victory of a pro-bailout party in the Greek election did not give stock markets the expected boost. Antonis Samaras, the leader of the New Democracy party, which narrowly won the poll, hopes to put a coalition together with the socialist Pasok party and possibly the smaller Democratic Left party before the end of the week. Mr Samaras has said he will "have to make some necessary amendments" to the terms of the bailout

agreement reached with the European Union and International Monetary Fund (IMF), "in order to relieve the people of crippling unemployment and huge hardships" but German Chancellor Angela Merkel appeared to dismiss the idea. "The new Greek government has to implement the commitments entered into by the country. The programme framework has to be kept," she said. On Monday, many world leaders expressed alarm in Los Cabos at what they saw as a lack of progress in dealing with the eurozone crisis. World Bank chief Robert Zoellick said: "We

WORLD G20 leaders alarmed Busy, busy, over eurozone crisis again

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

last week I put in a plea for someone with a digger to give some help to the Giant donkey Breeding Sanctuary in Estepona and, I think we’ve got someone. A gentleman has phoned Marlene at the sanctuary and offered his services, adding that he loves donkeys himself. I’ll let you know next week if it’s all been done. last week was as busy as ever but this time not because we had friends who were out here, this time it was because they were going back and we won’t be seeing them for a while. Wednesday, after delivering The news, it was home for a very quick change then out to the Chinese restaurant, Friday was out for dinner again with friends that are going back this coming weekend and Saturday night was a barbecue with friends at their house who travel a lot so aren’t always here. On Saturday my husband played golf so I was in the office dealing with some legal work for a friend in the UK then it was off to Mercadona shopping and home for ironing – which I can’t bear doing, particularly in this heat! It was so tempting to just jump in the pool after but, by the time I had finished everything, I’d run out of time and that was that. However, on Sunday afternoon, wimpoid here actually immersed my body in the cool water of the pool and swam for the first time this year. I’m rather hoping I will lose a few pounds again on the way!

The President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, said a draft G20 communiqué showed "support and encouragement for the euro area countries and leaders and for the European Union as a whole to overcome this crisis". While Europe is clearly the big danger, there are also problems elsewhere in the

Government and Socialists to stand together The government and the Socialist Party have decided to show a united Spanish front to the rest of Europe by voting together for the fiscal stability pact in Parliament on Thursday. The decision comes ahead of an EU summit scheduled for June 28th, to discuss solutions to the ongoing euro crisis. Over the past few weeks, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and opposition leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba have been holding secret talks to find ways of forging a common position before the European meeting. The Socialists are calling for European mechanisms to stimulate growth in Spain and not just a package of austerity measures – a position that is shared by French

Taking advantage of the French Socialist victory in parliamentary elections on Sunday, Rubalcaba said that Rajoy will soon have to the choose between opposite positions taken by the French president, who wants Brussels to introduce growth mechanisms, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is proposing additional cuts in troubled European states.

Caballero said that the denouement of the Malaya case, the biggest corruption scandal to ever emerge in Spain, did not mean "a full stop" to investigations into municipal wrongdoings in Marbella and Malaga province as a whole: "This is not the end, and I say this with sadness. We cannot allow this behaviour, which for the first time in the democratic era led to the dissolution of a city council, to be repeated." The case, which broke in 2006, features a who's who of Marbella society including two former

mayors, dozens of town officials and popular singer Isabel Pantoja (above). The sheer volume of charges brought against almost 100 defendants meant the proceedings had to be split into separate parts. The trial currently centres on former Marbella urban planning chief Juan Antonio Roca, generally regarded as the mastermind behind all the corrupt practices in Marbella. Singer Isabel Pantoja is not scheduled to appear in court until next week but her lawyers may have made a deal by then by which she will pay a stiff fine and be given a reduced sentence. In that case, she will not go to court or jail. She has a clean police sheet which means she will not have to serve a sentence of under two years.

Spain is implementing spending cuts in an effort to slash its budget deficit to 5.3% from 8.5% last year – a target the IMF said Spain was likely to miss. Many economists said the target was unrealistic when it was announced earlier this year. Meanwhile, thousands of demonstrators gathered outside Bankia's

headquarters in Madrid on Saturday evening to protest against the management of banks that were bailed out by the eurozone last weekend. Spain has been promised €100 billion in emergency loans to help the country’s struggling banks, which have been severely under-capitalised since the collapse of the property market. Bankia alone lost €3 billion last year. The €27 billion in cuts from its budget announced by the government earlier this year as part of one of the toughest austerity drives in the country's history included freezing unemployment benefits and public sector workers' salaries, slashing

departmental budgets and increasing tax on large companies. But the cuts and tax rises have undermined economic recovery and the country is back in recession. Spain has the highest unemployment rate in the eurozone, with almost one in four workers out of a job.

The Red Cross in Catalonia has revealed that grandparents in the region have become an important support for family members who have been left without a job and have no other sources of income.

Catalan Red Cross president Josep Marquès called on the central and regional governments not to make further cutbacks that would affect the elderly.

The report, entitled “The impact of the crisis on the elderly”, said 30 per cent of people aged over 65 have been helping at least one family member make ends meet over the past two years.

25th anniversary of worst ETA bombing Former Basque Country premier Jose Antonio Ardanza has revealed in a radio interview that the military wanted to stage a coup after the ETA bombing of the Hipercor supermaket in Barcelona which killed 21 people and injured 45 on June 19th, 1987. Ardanza said the military felt they had to act to put an end to so much “disorder and lack of authority”. ETA had been stepping up its attacks ever since Franco died, with 1980 and 1981 being the worst years, but the Hipercor bombing is generally regarded as its bloodiest attempt. Ardanza said it also marked a “before” and “after” in ETA’s history. “Even those who still viewed ETA as freedom fighters against the Franco dictatorship were shocked by the bombing,” Ardanza said, “and the terrorists lost

a lot of sympathisers.” Just a few days before the 25th anniversary of the bombing, one of the survivors, Roberto Manrique, met one of the men jailed for it, Rafael Caride Simón, at the Zaballa penitentiary, in the Basque Country. The meeting was part of an ongoing programme launched by the Zapatero government to promote reconciliation after ETA announced an end to its

attacks last year. There have been 11 such meetings so far, which have been criticised by some victims' associations. Manrique told reporters after the meeting that Caride Simón did not use the word "sorry" at any time during the two-hour meeting, but he did express regret in other words. He was sentenced to 790 years for the bombing which took place at a time when the supermarket was

packed with people. Manrique, who worked as a butcher there, was seriously injured in the attack. "He did say a great many times – I don't know, maybe eight or 10 or 12 times – that he feels guilty and responsible for all the hurt" Manrique said. Caride Simón also told him that there are other ETA prisoners who feel the same way, but don’t say so because of fear of reprisals.

“Fuenting” consists of jumping from the Navarreria fountain (fuente) in the old part of the town during the bull running festival in July. The idea is for the jumpers to be caught by people waiting six metres below but that does not always happen. As a result, hundreds have been injured over the years, many of them seriously. Posters that read “NO. Don’t do it” have already been put up by many tour operators in those countries, and they will also be distributed around camping sites used by many of the Englishspeaking thrill seekers.

The council will also ask the runners to wear suitable shoes and dress properly – all white with a red scarf – and not to touch or taunt the bulls as they run along the barricaded route to the bullring. An extra 2,500 policemen and Proteccion Civil medics will be on duty during the festival which runs from 6th-14th July each year in honour of San Fermin, patron saint of Navarra.

Red dot becomes 'oldest cave art'

"In Cantabria, in El Castillo, we find hand stencils that are formed by blowing paint against the hands pressed against the wall of a cave," explained Dr Alistair Pike from Bristol University, UK, and the lead author on a scholarly paper published in the journal Science. "We find one of these to date older than 37,300 years on 'The Panel of Hands', and very nearby there is a red disc made by a very similar technique that dates to older than 40,800 years. "This now currently is Europe's oldest dated art by at least 4,000 years," he told reporters. It is probably also the oldest reliably dated

cave art anywhere in the world. The oldest dates coincide with the first known immigration into Europe of modern humans (Homo sapiens) about 41,000 years ago. Before that, it was their evolutionary cousins, the Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis), who dominated the continent. Dr Pike's and colleagues' work therefore raises some intriguing questions about who might have authored the markings. If anatomically modern humans were responsible then it means they engaged in the activity almost immediately on their arrival in Europe. If Neanderthals were the artisans, it adds another layer to our understanding of their

capabilities and sophistication. The great antiquity of the paintings leads co-author Joao Zilhao, a research professor at ICREA, University of Barcelona, to think the Neanderthals produced the motifs. Finding even older paintings than the red dot at El Castillo might confirm that "gut feeling", he said. Tracing the origins of abstract thought and behaviours, and the rate at which they developed, are

The government confirmed on Sunday that the Public Works ministry agreed in 2010 to pay €190,000 euros for a portrait of Francisco Álvarez-Cascos, the former asturias regional premier who was head of the ministry during the administration of former Prime minister José maría aznar. although no money has been paid and the portrait has not been delivered, the price was agreed upon during the Socialist Party’s tenure, when José Blanco was Public Works minister. in comparison, Parliament has set aside €82,600 for the portrait done of José Bono when he was Speaker.

Ratko Mladic war crimes trial suspended

A panel of more than 30 Nobel laureates, ministers and scientists has called on governments to seize the "historic opportunity" of the Rio+20 summit to put the world on a new sustainable course. They said the evidence that society is "on the edge of a threshold of a future with unprecedented environmental risks" is unequivocal. Their declaration will be presented to the government delegations in Rio. Heads of government from about 130 countries, and ministers from others, began their session on Wednesday and are expected to sign the draft text that the Brazilian government issued last week by the end of this

week. While the majority of people in Rio expect a deal to be done, various organisations have warned that it will not go nearly far enough towards sorting out the environment and development issues facing humanity. Without explicitly criticising the draft agreement, the panel's declaration makes it clear that they agree. "There is an unacceptable risk that human pressures on the planet, should they continue on a business-asusual trajectory, will trigger

The trial of Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic was suspended until further notice on Monday. Mladic's trial was due to resume on 25th June after it was halted in May. The suspension was a result of an error in the disclosure of documents to the defence, the court in The Hague said in a statement. Seventy-year-old Mr Mladic is the last of the key figures wanted for war crimes in the Bosnia/Serbia conflict. He denies 11 charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity dating back to the 1992-1995 Bosnian War. Unhappy protesters

abrupt and irreversible changes with catastrophic outcomes for human societies and life as we know it," they wrote. Jim Leape, director of WWF International, said: "There's little in the Brazilian government’s document that changes what happens next week when governments go

home." He added: "This was never going to be a conference that solved everything; but it still can be a conference that puts the world on a different path." European governments among others are understood to be seeking to strengthen the document.

Obama and Putin seek Syria peace US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin have urged an immediate end to violence in Syria. The meeting of the two leaders on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Los Cabos, Mexico came amid unconfirmed reports that two Russian ships were preparing to set sail for Syria, apparently on a

mission to protect Russian citizens and remove equipment if necessary from the naval base in Tartus. Observers consider that this suggests that the Russians are taking precautions in the event of the Syrian regime collapsing. Speaking after the two-hour meeting, Mr Obama said he and Mr Putin had pledged to work

with "other international actors, including the United Nations, Kofi Annan, and all interested parties" to try to find a solution to the Syria crisis. Mr Putin said the two had found "many common points" on Syria. The two countries have been at odds over how to resolve the crisis. Russia and China have twice blocked US-backed UN

draft resolutions critical of Syria. Both countries argue that pushing the government from power using external pressure is unacceptable. Reporters said there were no smiles between Mr Obama and Mr Putin during the news conference, and their interactions seemed stiff and strained.

Body parts’ suspect extradited The porn actor suspected of murdering and dismembering his lover was extradited to canada from Germany on Monday. Justice Minister Rob nicholson confirmed Magnotta was brought home by canadian military transport to face charges and thanked the German government "for their swift and decisive action in this matter". Luka Magnotta, 29, had been held for the murder of Jun Lin, a chinese university student whose body parts were sent through the post. He was arrested in Berlin on June 4th and did not oppose his extradition, German officials said.

Nadal’s watch thief nabbed a Paris court sentenced the man who stole a €300,000 watch from Spanish tennis ace Rafael nadal to six months in jail last week. The judge also gave Brazilian christian a., a worker at the hotel where nadal stayed, a symbolic fine of €1. The 38-year-old, who stole the watch the night nadal made his record-breaking win at the Roland Garros tournament, told the judge the watch would have changed his life.“I wanted to keep it,” he said, “because it would have brought me luck.”

Military’s document ‘tantamount to a coup’ The document issued on Sunday by Egypt’s Supreme Council of Armed Forces (Scaf) giving the military legislative powers, control over the budget and over who writes the permanent constitution following the mass street protests that toppled Mr Mubarak, has been described by opposition groups as amounting to a military coup. The document also strips the president of any authority over the army. Prominent political figure Mohamed ElBaradei

described the document as a "grave setback for democracy and revolution", and former presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi said the declaration was a "seizure of the future of Egypt".

Commission (HPEC) are to be announced on Thursday but the Muslim Brotherhood has said unofficial results show its candidate, Mohammed Mursi, had won the election.

The Scaf confirmed on Monday that it plans to hand over power to the winner of the poll at the end of June, adding that new general elections cannot be held until a permanent constitution is drawn up. Official results from the Higher Presidential Election

The Brotherhood had earlier urged Egyptians to protect their revolution after the Scaf dissolved parliament – dominated by the Brotherhood – on Saturday. Soldiers have already been stationed around the parliament building with orders not to let MPs enter.

US tribes must be reimbursed The US Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the Navajo Indians and several other tribes must be paid in full for the services they provided in 1994-2001, including education, environmental protection and security. It said that it was not the fault of the tribes that Congress had imposed a

ceiling on such payments because of the lack of funds. "The government was obligated to pay the tribes' contract support costs in full," the court said in the ruling. The federal payments reportedly only covered between 77% and 92% of the costs, depriving the plaintiffs of hundreds of millions of dollars. The verdict is a major victory

for the tribes, who will now be paid in the same way as any private contractor. But the decision also has implications for contractors in general, as the court said the government has to abide by its promises. If a service had been performed, the court said, then it was not good enough simply to say the money was not there.

e costa coffee Whitbread, the owner of Costa Coffee and Premier Inn, has announced it will create 3,500 new jobs in the UK this financial year. Whitbread opened 35 new UK stores over the first quarter period this year with 29 in UK Retail and six in Costa Enterprises. The group said it plans to open a further 4,200 Premier Inn rooms, eight joint site restaurants and 350 new Costa stores this year. Costa is already Britain's biggest coffee shop brand with almost 1,400 shops and has a further 800 units in 25 overseas markets, including China and India. The coffee shop and restaurant firm enjoyed a strong first quarter, with group like-for-like sales up 4.5%. Within that, like-for-

like sales were up 8.4% at Costa Coffee, and 4.3% at budget hotel chain Premier Inn. Andy Harrison, Chief Executive of Whitbread, said: "Our plans for profitable growth are well established, supported by our strong balance sheet." But he added: "For the second quarter we face tougher comparatives against a strong result last year, together with the uncertain impact of this summer's major sporting events." In April, Whitbread posted a rise in full-year profit and said Premier Inn had enjoyed sales growth since the start of the new financial year, recovering from a dip over Christmas and in the early part of 2012.

£1 billion and 300 new jobs

The Royal Navy’s Vanguard Class that carries the Trident nuclear deterent submarines are to be replaced as part of a new £1 billion contract announced on Monday of this week. The money will be used to build two reactor cores. One will be used for the seventh Astute Class attack submarine – that are nuclear-powered but not nuclear-armed. The other reactor could be used for the first of the next generation of nucleararmed submarines. Three hundred new jobs will be created at the fiveyear-old Rolls Royce plant in Raynesway, Derbyshire to be regenerated over an 11 year period as a further

part of the scheme to allow the highly specialised work to be carried out. A government spokesman said that it was essential that British forces keep up with modern technology in an increasingly unstable world. The new reactors are expected to have a life of 30 or 40 years. Sky News’ Mark Stone said: "The complicated part is that this isn't to replace the missiles. The nuclear missiles that Britain has don't pass their sell-by date until about 2040. This is regarding the replacement of the vehicle which these [nuclear] missiles are contained in – the submarine."

Spinetti dies Victor Spinetti, Welsh-born star of stage and screen, has died at the age of 82. Born to an Italian-Welsh father and Welsh mother in Cwm, Ebbw Vale, he was a regular performer in London's West End as well as with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He appeared in more than 30 films, including the Beatles' movies and Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. He had been diagnosed with cancer. Spinetti's agent, Barry Burnett, said: "He had cancer for a year, but he was very cheerful to the end. I spoke to him on Friday and he was talking about his plans and everything." News of his death prompted a stream of tributes from fans and members of the entertainment world on Twitter. UK

Drum tragedy A 33-year-old drum technician, Scott Johnson from South Yorkshire, has died from crush injuries at Downsview Park in Toronto, Canada after the top part of a stage collapsed just three hours before a sell-out Radiohead concert was due to open. A part from Mr. Johnson, a 45year-old man was taken to hospital with head injuries and two others were treated at the scene for minor injuries. Police spokesman, Tony Vella, said the accident happened as crew were setting up the stage when the top portion of the stage fell down on top of the four people. Many tributes were to be found on Twitter saying that Scott Johnson had played with many top bands and was a first class drummer in his own right. The band cancelled the concert and said that the 40,000 tickets sold for the concert would be refunded. KENT

Royal teepee The Duchess of Cambridge had a look at teepees and tents used by youngsters in Kent. She helped the children, aged 8 and 9, build a campfire and it was the first time many of them had ever visited the countryside.

Murdered girl’s “Right to die” man’s sister accused trial starts in London One of the sisters of murdered 17-year-old teenager Shafilea Ahmed has admitted telephoning witnesses in the trial as a joke because she “just felt like doing it”. Mevish Ahmed, 21 has been accused of intimidating other witnesses with these silent phone calls and added that she “thought it was funny”. She now denies ever having seen her sister killed although she had

previously told a witness in the trial that she saw her parents kill Shafilea and that she “had her eyes wide open”. The girls’ sister, Alesha Ahmed, has already told the jury at Chester crown court that she saw the killing along with her brother and sisters. The parents deny murdering Shafilea at the family home in Warrington, Cheshire, in September 2003. The trial continues.

Hunt on again Twenty-one years ago, on December 14th 1991, the then 18-year-old Nicola Payne went missing from her home in Coventry while on her way to her parents’ home from the home she shared with her boyfriend, Jason Cook and six-month-old son Owen. She hasn’t been seen since despite many

searches that have been carried out by police including dredging a canal in the city and digging up the garden of the house she lived in after a tip off. Now the hunt is on again following new information. Ground penetrating radar and specially trained dogs are being used in an area less than a mile from where she was last seen.

Barrister Paul Bowen QC is representing 58-year-old Tony Nicklinson from Wiltshire, who has suffered from “locked-in syndrome” following a catastrophic stroke seven years ago while on a business trip to Athens. The syndrome means that, while there is nothing wrong with his mind, he is totally incapable of carrying out the most basic functions for himself and relies entirely on his doctors and family. The father of two has taken his case to the High Court in London seeking a decision by them to allow him to die with help from his doctors, but without the possibility of them being convicted of assisting a suicide if they do so. The only way he has been able to communicate at all is by the blink of an eye, by moving his head fractionally, with the use of a specially adapted computer or by his wife holding up a magnetic board with letters on it to

SPECIALISTS IN BANK REPOSSESSIONS AND BELOW MARKET VALUE PROPERTIES

try and spell out what he requires by blinking when she touches the right letters. Mr Nicklinson’s legal team told the three judges in courtroom three at the Royal Courts of Justice that with present laws on assisted suicide and euthanasia he is being condemned to live in a state of suffering and indignity which would carry on if the judges cannot agree with his right to die. The barrister told the judges that Mr Nicklinson was not seeking to persuade the judges to "introduce an allencompassing new regime legalising euthanasia and assisted suicide. While he would welcome such a change, he accepts that such a regime can only be introduced by parliament. However, there is no sign of parliament introducing such a regime any time soon that would afford the claimant the opportunity of an assisted death with

dignity." The case differs to previous attempts to amend the law on assisted suicide, like the case of multiple sclerosis sufferer Debbie Purdy, who won a clarification of prosecution policy where someone assists a terminally ill person to die. Mr Nicklinson's paralysis is so severe that he simply cannot be assisted to take his own life and he would have to be killed by someone else. Earlier this year, an independent commission on assisted dying concluded for the first time that certain people should be helped to die. But this only applies to those who are terminally ill and are able to take the final action to end their lives themselves – which excludes Mr Nicklinson. And while a furious debate takes place on Twitter, the case continues.

Repsol has asked for permission to explore for gas off the coasts of Mijas and Fuengirola next spring and the Malaga Tourism Board has made no secret of its opposition. It intends to put pressure on the Industry Ministry to reject the scheme. Councillor

The naming of Prince Salman bin Abdelaziz as the heir to the throne in Saudi Arabia after the death of Crown Prince Nayef last Saturday means that the Saudi contingent will continue to visit Marbella as much as ever.

Manuel Villafaina

Rodriguez (United Left) has accused the government of preferring to put the interests of big business above that of local businesses which depend on tourism.

National team boosts economy The national flag manufacturer Adivin has tripled the number of seamstresses it employs to meet the demand for the flag during the 2012 Eurocup. The manager of the Malaga-based company said it expected to sell some 25,000 flags of different sizes. Juan Antonio Moreno said the company estimates that it will sell more flags this year than it did during the 2010 World

Cup, when around 7,500 flags were sold. He said that since then bar owners had realised that their takings increased when they displayed the national flag

during a Cup series. He said the company also does a roaring trade in flags for other countries such as France, Italy and Greece.

Mayor criticises King’s visit The Socialist mayor of La Linea, Gemma Araujo, has said the King’s planned visit to Algeciras this week is a “mistake”. She said the media had portrayed it as support for the Guardia Civil’s protection of the fishing boats involved in the dispute with Gibraltar over fishing rights. However, the visit was announced when the Duke and Duchess of Wessex were visiting Gibraltar as part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. The mayor said 53 of the boats worked out of La

Linea and it was hard to understand why the King was supporting those who keep watch (the Guardia) and not those who are suffering (the fishermen). The La Linea fishermen have preferred to stay at home until an agreement is negotiated between the two sides and have criticised their Algeciras counterparts for insisting on fishing in the disputed waters and encouraging the confrontation between the Guardia Civil and the Royal Navy.

Mayor Araujo said the town that had suffered most during the long years of confrontation over the Rock had been La Linea, “where Spain begins”.

Crown Prince Salman kept out of the limelight in previous years but he was always among the Saudi visitors. The ties between Spain and Saudi Arabia are stronger that ever. King Juan Carlos was the first foreign head of state to arrive in Saudi Arabia on a visit of condolence on Sunday. Crown Prince Salman also visited Madrid recently for talks with Spanish companies interested in infrastructure works in Saudi Arabia after the signing of the high speed Mecca-Medina train link.

Store owners along the Golden Mile, especially the jewellers, who rely heavily on the Saudi visitors in

these hard economic times, can continue to sleep easy.

The residents of one of the most exclusive urbanisations along the Costa del Sol reacted with disgust last week when they realised Francisco Correa, the alleged mastermind behind a maze of corruption known as the Gurtel case, had returned to his residence there after being released from jail on bail of €200,000. The gated Valgrande urbanisation of 165 apartments gets its exclusivity from the nearby Valderrama golf club, which is considered to be one of the ten best golf courses in the world and is the only club in continental Europe to have hosted the Ryder Cup. The smallest twobedroom apartment there costs €480,000 while the larger four-bedroom ones cost around €1.2 million. If residents were judged by their wealth alone Correa would have no problems. He drives a Land Rover Discovery valued at €50,000, and has another residence in the port where his yacht worth €700,000 used to be moored.

concerned that Correa’s presence is lowering the tone of the neighbourhood. He was reported as saying “Because one of the residents has done what he did, the remaining 164 owners shouldn’t have to pay for it,” Although Correa is living there, he can’t sell either of his Sotogrande properties which were embargoed

A local biologist said that jellyfish usually only grow so big in hotter waters and that it was probably the winds arriving from the Atlantic that pushed them into the mediterranean. the giant jellyfish are causing a sensation elsewhere as people take photos of them to put on Facebook and other social networks.

Hospital registers rise in patients the Costa del Sol hospital attended to more people in the first five months of this year than it did last year. A hospital administrator said the average number of patients seen every working day rose to 1,335 as opposed to 1,300 a day last year.

However he changed the yacht for a bigger one just a few months before he was arrested just over three years ago and sent the new one to Ceuta where refurbishing yachts is cheaper. He now owes the Ceuta port authority €320,000 for maintaining it while he was in jail. One of his neighbours in Valgrande told a local newspaper: “We’re tired of having to put up with this sinverguenza (scoundrel)”.

local council staff have accepted the proposal to accept a wage cut rather than lose their jobs. As a result, just over 800 workers will take a cut of 3 per cent and go without the so-called productivity payment for this year. they have also decided to continue working normal winter hours, rather than one hour less a day during the summer months.

The urbanisation’s administrator is also

only one union representing the workers – the General Workers Union (UGt) – voted against the proposal.

However, the number of people attended to in emergencies had dropped, mainly because people were responding to a campaign that urges them not to turn up with nothing more than a cut finger. torremolinoS

Memo from

Voice Madrid Muriel Pilkington

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Lost in a maze

I

should have opted for “lost in translation” as a title, because the more I try to understand what’s happening on the economic front from papers and magazines that are allegedly written in English the less I seem to understand. Would somebody translate for me, please? However, one economist I read assiduously – Nobel laureate Paul Krugman – helps me out occasionally.

Devious Dívar

K

ake the rating agencies – Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s and Fitch’s – for example. They’ve been very busy lately downgrading Spain, most of its regions and banks, as well as several other European countries to what I gather is called “junk bond status” – whatever that means. Just who are these agencies to play fast and loose with the future of millions of people whose countries they’re trashing? Then I remembered a column Krugman wrote last year, titled Credibility, Chutzpah and Debt. I’m going to quote from it extensively because it will help to prevent your heart racing when one of the Almighty Three hand out their next junk bond status.

rugman’s words may make us all feel less inclined to take the rating agencies seriously but unfortunately the people who populate the money markets don’t seem to read his columns. And they’re the ones who seem intent on destroying the so-called eurozone which will send international capitalism into a possibly fatal downward spiral. The only hope here is that French president Francois Hollande is already talking about tackling the “speculators” – that is, the money markets – and the Obama government seems to be thinking along the same lines. I haven’t the vaguest idea about how they will achieve that aim but I hope they’ll do it soon. The money markets are there to make money for a small percentage of the world’s population, borrowing and lending on a short-term basis, which gives them plenty of opportunities to make a killing. I don’t know when old-fashioned capitalism based on the production of goods started to die out in the West and move East but I do know that we are left with a speculative capitalism that seems intent on destroying the world as we knew it.

S

M

T

tandard & Poor’s (S&P) caused quite a furore when it downgraded US government debt last year. To understand why, Krugman wrote: “You have to hold in your mind two seemingly (but not actually) contradictory ideas. The first is that America is no longer the stable, reliable country it once was. The second is that S&P itself has even lower credibility.” Krugman says it’s the last place anyone should turn to for judgements about a nation’s prospects. He goes on: “If there’s a single word that best describes the rating agency’s decision to downgrade America, it’s chutzpah – traditionally defined by the example of the young man who kills his parents then pleads for mercy because he’s an orphan.”

T

hen Krugman goes in for the kill: “America’s large budget deficit is, after all, primarily the result of the economic slump that followed the 2008 financial crisis. And S&P, along with its sister rating agencies, played a major role in causing that crisis, by giving AAA ratings to mortgage-backed assets that have since turned into toxic waste.” And the bad judgement didn’t stop there either, Krugman says. “Notoriously, S&P gave Lehman Brothers, whose collapse triggered a global panic, an A rating right up to the month of its demise. And how did the rating agency react after this A-rated firm went bankrupt? By issuing a report that it had done nothing wrong.”

ind you, the markets are getting a lot of help from feckless governments in Greece, Portugal, Ireland and Spain, to name but a few and their endless need to borrow money to pay for past excesses. The more we hear about what the central, regional and local governments here in Spain have been spending their money on the more difficult it is to believe that we’ll ever pull ourselves out of what increasingly seems to be a bottomless pit of corruption and reckless spending.

A

bailout for the banks will only prop up a system that is rotten to the core but which pays out easy money to people who haven’t done anything to deserve it. While decisions by the central government in Madrid have left a lot to be desired, its inability to rein in spending in the regions borders on the criminal. But the Dívar scandal seems to provide a key to understanding the situation – so many people in high places have been on the fiddle for so long that the entire structure would come tumbling down if the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth came out.

P

erhaps it’s easier to wander around in a maze of not understanding, hoping for another bailout, handout, whatever, to come to the rescue. See, I’m getting more and more like those who allegedly govern the country by the minute!

C

arlos Dívar didn’t get to perform the swan song he wanted. The Supreme Court chief justice who up until today has refused to resign wanted to be photographed with King Juan Carlos during the top court’s bicentennial celebrations, which are being held throughout this week. Conveniently, the Spanish monarch bowed out of the ceremonies on Monday with the excuse that he had to travel to Saudi Arabia to pay his condolences to the royal family for the loss of Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz, who died on Saturday. It was great timing. The 70year-old Dívar has been under fire since early May for all the trips that he has taken to Marbella’s Puerto Banús and charged to the judiciary. In all, the chief justice took some 32 trips to the resort and other destinations across the country at a cost of €32,000 to taxpayers. He claims that all the trips were official but journalists from different newspapers have found that Dívar’s excursions were mostly for pleasure.

T

he 20-member General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), the legal watchdog over which Dívar also presides, has pretty much withdrawn its support for him after the Supreme Court chief justice gave lame explanations for all these trips. On Thursday, the panel is expected to meet in an extraordinary session to discuss the matter and, perhaps, accept Dívar’s resignation. The chief justice, who was appointed by the Socialist government in 2008, has already said that he will make an important and “emphatic” announcement about his future then.

being shaped up by former High Court Judge Baltasar Garzón as vengeance against those who got him thrown off the bench last year. Indeed, Garzón has remained quiet throughout this scandal, travelling about Latin America where he is praised as a champion of human rights. What Garzón knows and what he isn’t saying has not really helped prop up the Spain’s judiciary.

T

his obscene and embarrassing situation has gone on long enough. If Dívar doesn’t resign by Thursday, our toothless Congress needs to step in and find loopholes in the law to remove him. Dívar is replaceable. There isn’t any excuse – except fear – to keep him on the bench. Why Dívar has lasted this long is anyone’s guess. But what is clear is that the chief justice won’t go quietly – he intends to show the entire judiciary’s dirty laundry as he shuts the door on a long career. Maybe this isn’t a bad idea. Showing the dirt under the carpet always leads to a cleaner house. Unfortunately for Spain, however, the grime is always mixed with sludge that was mixed long ago by filthy politicians.

Untouchable

M

t is not so surprising that Dívar has refused to step down while having the support of many on the CGPJ panel. It appears that this gentleman has a lot of dirt on many of his colleagues, and has asked for information about the trips that others have taken and charged to the judiciary’s coffers. The chief justice’s position in Spain is one that approximates just a notch below divinity. He has no obligation to appear before Congress to explain his habits, and he doesn’t have to give any real reasons why he spends the government’s money in the way that he does because the law – fashioned by his own cohorts – is on his side.

uch has been said in the international press about Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s spin on the bailout he asked for and got from Brussels. As you recall, Rajoy has told everyone who has listened that the €100 billion aid for Spanish banks that Europe has offered to pay was not a rescue plan. Rajoy has also tried to convince everyone that he wasn’t pressured into accepting the money – it was he who did the pressuring. The global press has made him the laughing stock of Europe. His counterparts across the continent were not pleased by the prime minister’s version of the events. Now it appears that Spain is heading for a “full bailout”. Rajoy no doubt will again put a spin on things, blaming the entire situation on the Socialists, mostly José Rodríguez Zapatero, for getting us in this current turmoil. But no one in this Partido Popular (PP) government has a big enough memory chip to realise that this entire real estate scandal actually began during the “boom” years of Jose María Aznar.

T

A

I

here are unconfirmed reports that this entire mess, which is tarnishing the Spanish judiciary, is

znar is untouchable – for now.

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY HONOURS - Gibraltar Her Majesty The Queen has been graciously pleased to give orders for the following appointments: To be Ordinary Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (“OBE”): Karel Mark CHICHON, Co-Founder and Artistic Director of the Gibraltar Philharmonic Society. For services to music and culture in Gibraltar. Mr. Chichon has conducted the world’s three leading orchestras and, through him, Gibraltar has welcomed some of the top internationally acclaimed performers.

Her Majesty The Queen has also been graciously pleased to give orders for the award of a British Empire Medal to: Manuel (known as Manolo) RUIZ, Founding President, Senior Citizens’ Association, Gibraltar. For services to the community, particularly to senior citizens, in Gibraltar. Mr. Ruiz founded the Senior Citizens’ Association eleven years ago and has worked since to improve the standard of living for senior citizens in Gibraltar. His Excellency The Governor, Sir Adrian Johns, has awarded the Gibraltar Award (Governor's Certificate and Badge of Honour) in recognition of exceptional services in Gibraltar to: Mr Anthony GALLIANO.

For services to scouting in Gibraltar. Mr Galliano served as the Cub Scout Leader of the 5th Gibraltar Sea Scout Group for many years before becoming Assistant Chief Commissioner. He organises events, assists with training sessions and runs the Pipe and Drum band. Mr Raphael GONZALEZ. For services to the Royal Gibraltar Regiment and the local community in Gibraltar. Mr. Gonzalez has served the Royal Gibraltar Regiment TA band since he was seventeen. He also entertains as a presenter on Radio Gibraltar and works full time as a Civil Servant dealing with accommodation. The Governor said “I would like to offer my congratulations to all the recipients. I am delighted that a significant number of worthy candidates in Gibraltar have been recognised in this list. This is a direct result of more high quality nominations. But we need to keep the momentum up: another honours round is already under way and we need more nominations. I would

urge people to think about nominating those who might merit an award. It is particularly fitting that we recognise in this way the achievements of our Gibraltar community in this, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Year.” It is important that nominations are strong and include supporting information, given that they will need to stand up to scrutiny by people who may not know the individual concerned or their work. Forms can be submitted at any time during the year and will be held for consideration by the Gibraltar Honours Board at their next meeting. Packs containing nomination forms and guidance notes are available from the Convent reception or electronically by e-mailing Enquiry.Gibraltar@fco.gov. uk. In addition to the advice contained in the guidance notes, the Honours Board Secretary can offer general advice on the process (by email on Enquiry.Gibraltar@fco.gov. uk or by calling the Convent on 2004 5440). Useful information can also be

found on the UK direct.gov.uk website (or just Google “UK Honours System”).

former President of the Gibraltar Courts the Right Honourable Sir Murray Stuart-Smith has been made a Knight Commander Order of Saint Michael and Saint George KCMG.

On Tuesday 5th June at Sky Dive Spain's air field near Seville Matthew Jones (pictured top) completed a sponsored tandem skydive for the benefit of the Marbella Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. Matt said: “That was mind blowing! I have always wanted to do a Skydive and this seemed to be a good way to achieve my ambition and to raise some money for the cause.” The jump raised over €1,500 and Matt would like personally to thank all his friends and family for their kind sponsorship. “I must say a special thank you to Paul and Ann owners of Completely Marbella and the Skol Garden Bar for the generous donation of €165 that covered the cost of the jump. This means that €1,500 euros will go directly to the Royal British Legion Marbella branch poppy appeal,” said Matt.

Matt who is Standard Bearer for Marbella Branch of the RBL was supported by some 20 members who had organised a bus trip to take in the sights of Seville the previous day and then watch him do his stuff.

British pensioner Mrs M travelling by train to Torre del Mar (east of Málaga) accidentally left her handbag on the platform at Torreblanca (Fuengirola) station last Wednesday. Realising her mistake, she and the friend she was travelling with disembarked at the next station hoping to return to Torreblanca and locate the missing handbag.

The bag, containing her keys, passport, credit cards, various other valuables and over a thousand euros in cash, was predictably not there. Distraught at her loss and dragging her holiday suitcase behind her she sought solace at another friend’s house who lived nearby. The friend’s daughter – fluent in Spanish – called RENFE in Málaga to report the loss, to be informed some kind soul had just handed in the

RENFE to the Soroptimists raise funds at rescue festivals

The F.M.B chapter of the American Club (Fuengirola – Mijas – Benalmádena) and the Soroptimist International Club of the Costa del Sol raised a healthy €1400 selling food and drinks typically associated with the USA at their joint venture stand throughout the recent Mijas International Festival. The money raised goes towards much needed funding for the many educational programmes and projects supported by Soroptimist International.

Soroptimist International, which is present in 124 countries and has over 86,000 members worldwide, will also be running a similar fundraiser stand at the forth coming Mijas Blues Festival from July 6th to the 8th – www.mijasbluesfestival.com This time serving up the typically tasty food more often found in the southern USA. Visit either: www.si-es.org or www.soroptimistinternatio nal.org for more details of their charity work.

Flamingo visit

Members of the Costa del Sol Photographic Society and friends enjoyed a day's outing to Fuente de Piedra on 12th June to visit the Donkey Sanctuary and the

lake to see the flamingos. Further details of the Society and their future events can be found on the website www.photoclubspain.com.

Razzle dazzle Britsoc An evening of Black and White and Diamonds provided a Gala Evening to remember as members of the British Society and their guests dressed in fine style for the Jubilee Celebrations on the Millennium Terrace at Villa Luisa. The entertainer Ricky Lavazza began the evening which soon drew dancers on to the floor with a few slow numbers. The ladies led the way for “New York, New York” and the more energetic members of the Society soon joined them to do the twist. The raffle draw allowed everyone to rest before continuing with the dancing until midnight. Next was the Jubilee traditional street party held under the shade on the Millenium Terrace. The resident chef provided a huge variety of sandwiches, scones, mini pies, Cornish pasties, tempting pastries and cakes served with tea or coffee or drinks from the bar. Glasses were filled for a toast to the Queen and background music allowed everyone to chat with friends as they enjoyed the views of Fuengirola and the

sea. As the meal finished the search was on for mini Union Flags stuck to the back of chairs, the four lucky winners each receiving a bottle of wine. Pass the parcel along the tables provided some fun as people struggled to reach the next person after others had to sit out. The final event of the week was the Petanca Jubilee Cup Competition played on the courts at Villa Luisa. A cool start to the morning provided ideal conditions for start of play. As the morning progressed hats and sun cream became the order of the day as a closely fought final was played. The winners were presented with a bottle of wine and a trophy shaped like a diamond. The latest event at the British Society was a Father’s Day Lunch and there is a Mamma Mia Night this Saturday 23rd June. You can find out more about the British Society and the events planned for the summer months by consulting their website at www.britishsocietyspain.co m or telephone 952 590 795.

If a loved one died in Spain, would you know what to do? Ask yourself these questions: Who would you call? Do you know the Spanish system? Would you be able to deal with the Spanish Law and Customs? Would family members have time to attend the funeral, which is usually held within 48 hours? Upfront payment is usually required in the region of €4000, would this amount be readily available? MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

Red Tails his week I am being Tgivebrave, as I am going to you my opinion on a

Director: Anthony Hemingway Starring: Cuba Gooding Jr, Terrence Howard This is a World War II tale of heroes battling it out in dog fights in the skies over Germany, based on the inspirational true story of the Tuskegee Airmen, a squadron of AfricanAmerican flying aces and the movie highlights how they achieved their lasting fame. For these were men drafted in to fight Hitler’s forces who faced rampant racism from their own white counterparts, men of whom it was said in an official government report

did not have the intelligence or courage for frontline battle. Their airplanes sported scarlet fin tails, hence the nickname, and these men forged their place in history with tales of derring-do and outstanding bravery. Executive producer George Lucas has been trying to bring the story to the big screen for two decades but apparently could not find a studio to bankroll the movie so he stumped up 37 million quid of his own

cash. There’s every chance he will recoup his expenditure at the box office. It’s a worthy tale full of good intentions, and Lucas’s Light and Magic Special Effects Company is behind the lively aerial battles as the Hun (mostly called Fritz, and with cheek scars) do their best to destroy airmen whose colour decrees that they are sub-human in Aryan eyes. On the ground the critics have groaned at the one dimensional

characters and wooden dialogue (so, a bit like Star Wars but look what happened there). If it sounds Jingoistic and old fashioned, well, they were the words used to describe it by Lucas himself so it must be true. But whatever else it is, it is an inspirational story of overcoming odds and earning respect laced with some thrilling dog fights so settle back with the popcorn for a good oldfashioned war time yarn.

Pink Floyd: e Story Of Wish You Were Here. Release date: June 2012

Bob Marley -is Land Is Your Land. Release date: June, 2012

"Wish You Were Here", released in September 1975, was the follow up album to the globally successful "The Dark Side Of The Moon" and is cited by many fans, as well as band members Richard Wright and David Gilmour, as their favourite Pink Floyd album. On release it went straight to Number One in both the UK and the US and topped the charts in many other countries around the world. This programme tells the story of the making of this landmark release through new interviews with Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason and archive interviews with the late Richard Wright. Also featured are sleeve designer Storm

Thorgerson, guest vocalist Roy Harper, front cover "burning man" Ronnie Rondell and others involved in the creation of the album. In addition, original recording engineer Brian Humphries revisits the master tapes at Abbey Road Studios to illustrate aspects of the songs' construction.

While there is little argument that Bob Marley was the finest reggae performer and songwriter of his time, it is sometimes forgotten what an effective protest singer and dynamic spokesman for the underdog this pioneering poet also was. And although his message was always one of peace and he never recommended fighting fire with fire, he managed to affect the political situation for better in both his homeland and around the world by preaching the simple dictum, love thy neighbour. This film documents both the music and the message of Bob Marley as it investigates his life and career in a manner not previously

undertaken. It features contributions from many who knew him personally, rare archive interviews, seldom seen footage and photos and an array of other features – which altogether reveal the kind of man Marley was and the effect he had by making his music the message.

film that is based on a book, and not just any book – a best-seller that I haven´t even read. Now, how is that for brave? A few days ago I watched “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”. As there has been a lot of hype about the movie and its books, I was imaging it was going to be one of those awful Hollywood blockbuster action movies, but I was wrong. et me give you a little Lbook? idea what the movie (or probably shouldn´t say that) is about. I´m guessing the majority of you have read the book or if not, like me seen the movie – but for those who haven´t, here is the plot.

white-knuckle that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. When I saw the 2hrs 32mins on the box, I cringed, but the time just flew by! ost of the scenes are M rather dark and intense, but every now and then there is a bit of quirky dialogue and some light humour which doesn´t make the film too heavy – it lightens it up a little. One of my favourite scenes was between Mikael and Lisbeth, the morning after they've slept together, Mikael wakes to find Lisbeth has made him breakfast. Lisbeth: “I like working with you.” Mikael: “I like working with you too.”

aniel Craig plays D Mikael Blomkvist a journalist on a bumpy road after a libel case guts him of his life savings and professional credibility. At the same time a lawyer has requested a further background check on Mikael, the check being attained by Lisbeth Salander an anti-social and unique character. The lawyer gives Mikael an offer he can't refuse, the lawyer's billionaire client Henrik Vanger wants Mikael to solve a 40-yearold missing persons case. However, when Mikael requests an assistant, (Lisbeth) they discover the missing person seems to be related to a series of murders. have to say, I wasn´t quite Ididn´t sure what to expect, as I know what the story was about, but I really enjoyed this film. It´s a bit like a Sherlock Homes/Miss Marple, but on acid, it´s a

irector David Fincher, D has managed to make this film an electrifyingly cold tale that takes us to the brink of insanity, and even lets us look over the edge. It is superbly cast. Daniel Craig, who I don´t particularly care for, was amazing, not to mention Rooney Mara. She deserves the Academy Award for best actress due to her powerful, yet disturbing performance. There is a palpable chemistry between Craig and Mara, it really is something else. his is definitely not a Theart, movie for the faint of it's a movie that will rattle your cage.

Financially you have not had this kind of support for many years and someone from your past may re-hire you again or give you another go at something. There may be a return to a project you had begun before but felt that you had left unfinished. The potential for earning whilst doing the things that you love is a great place to be in and is one that is currently on offer. You will be able to look at things from a new perspective so that you can better plan for the future. Doors are about to be opened and your life is set to expand in abundant ways. Jupiter grants fresh views on those hard tangles and gives you the optimism and the insight to see it all the way through. Clear the past so that the current course is clear for you to leap ahead. Look beyond the immediate moment and make sure that your foundations are as strong as they can be for the future. Plans, budgets and long term finances take centre stage. Finding the words to express your deeper feelings and intentions are not always easy. This week your mental powers of deduction and your ability to communicate effectively can give you the upper hand. You may find a way to navigate some of those old lingering emotions thereby putting some unpleasing things behind you. Unresolved relationship chapters are finally being dealt with and the load you are carrying lightens up. You may have been up and down and are still wondering what will happen next. More of someone’s true colours may be seen at this time as deeper truths are revealed. Relationships will move to another level and offer you more support. Changes need to be made so it is a matter of finding the ones that will work the best and take bold actions if and when they are needed even if it means admitting that you were wrong in the past. Your perspective is likely to take a shift in a more positive direction, a certain chain of events could enable you to start to change the way you think as you focus on all that is going right in your life as opposed to all that is broken. You are firmly in the driver’s seat for directing your desires in your own way this week, career doors and connections with those you can count on fling open. You could revisit conversations as well as places you have travelled to in the past.

Lately you have been brought into close touch with all of the things that have become sorely out of balance in your life which on the one hand encourages permanent change, but it also reveals the gaping ache and the distance that now needs to be bridged. This is no time to sit on the fence, look to see how your actions September 23rd - have brought you to where you are now and take that positive action. You will find October 22nd those long term answers and solutions.

You can sense that there is so much more going on behind the scenes than you know about, there is so much more that you need to know and you probably feel the pull to dig deep to find out what is going on. This is likely to be a sensual week but bear in mind that your emotional intensity is at an all-time high and the passion that you infuse into all that you do will leave its mark wherever it falls. You can make a real difference right now.

SAGITTARIUS You are stepping out into the world in some new way. Your magnetism is expanding as you make an impact on others and the world. Be bold in your approach and if it feels right, do it. Whatever you set in motion will have a strong chance of sticking making it an ideal time to commit to a project or a person. Avoid projecting yourself too far into the future in your mind, for analysis leads to paralysis, as the future will take care of itself. Thinking about doing things is not enough – it is time to roll up the sleeves and get busy. Lead by example and show others how to do things for themselves.

You may already begin to feel a shift as certain heartaches are beginning to ease and as you look around, you will begin to see and feel growing support as you delegate, others cooperate and you share in life’s load. Change is on the horizon and for some of you it may simply be enhancing your living space. Lift yourself beyond the limits of fear and insecurity and take that chance to live to your fullest potential. Remember what it is you really want.

...you don’t have to be a chef!

A Middle Eastern treat, ready in minutes. Why not try aubergine instead of courgettes? This recipe can be played around with in many ways – green beans are another of my favourite vegetables that also go very well, and the halloumi is just delicious. Also another good one for veggies.

Summer couscous salad (Serves 4)

Ingredients: • 250g couscous • 250ml vegetable stock , boiling • 400g can chickpeas , drained and

• • •

2 large garlic cloves , finely chopped 2 tbsp chopped fresh mint ½ tsp sugar

rinsed

• 1-2 tbsp vegetable or olive oil • 300g courgettes, sliced on the slant • 300g small vine-ripened tomatoes, halved

• 250g pack halloumi cheese , thickly sliced and then halved lengthways FOR THE DRESSING • 125ml olive oil • 3 tbsp lime juice

Directions 1. Tip the couscous into a bowl, pour the boiling stock over and mix well with a fork. Cover with a plate and leave for 4 minutes. Meanwhile, tip all the dressing ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Fluff up the couscous with a fork, stir in the chickpeas and follow with half the dressing. Mix well and pile on to a large serving dish. 2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large frying pan and fry the courgette slices over a high heat for 2-3 minutes until dark golden brown. Lift out on to kitchen paper. Now put the tomatoes cutside down into the pan, and cook for another

couple of minutes until tinged brown on the underside. Top the couscous with the courgettes and then the tomatoes. 3. If the pan is dry, pour in a little more oil and heat it up, then add the halloumi strips and fry for 2-3 minutes, turning them over from time to time, until crisp and sizzled brown. Pile on top of the tomatoes, and drizzle with the remaining dressing. Serve as soon as possible.

Obesity just as damaging as rising numbers Increasing levels of fatness around the world could have the same impact on global resources as an extra billion people, researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine have said. In their report, they calculate the weight of the global population at 287 million tonnes. Using World Health Organization data from 2005, they estimated that 15 million tonnes of this mass is due to people being overweight, and 3.5 million tonnes due to obesity. The researchers worked out that the average global body weight was 62kg, but there were huge regional differences. In North America, the average was 80.7kg (178lb). Although only 6% of the global population live there, it is responsible for more than a third of the

obesity. In Asia, at the other end of the scale, it was 57.7kg (127lb). While Asia accounts for 61% of the global population, it only accounts for 13% of the weight of the world due to obesity. But other countries in the top 10 most weighty are more of a surprise, and include Kuwait, Croatia, Qatar and Egypt. The researchers said that the high number of Arab countries is due to the impact of the automobile: "One of the most important determinants of average body mass index is motor vehicle gas consumption per capita.

So, it is no surprise to see many of the Arab countries in the list – people eat but they move very little because they drive everywhere." The researchers said they hope their work will prompt new thinking about how the world weighs up issues of consumption, weight and population growth. "We often point the finger at poor women in Africa having too many babies," they said. "But we've also got to think of this fatness thing; it's part of the same issue of exceeding our planetary limits."

Graphic warning labels 'work better' Images such as patients on ventilators placed on cigarette packets help smokers heed the health warnings about smoking, according to researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Their study of 200 smokers found that 83% were able to remember the health warning if it was accompanied by a graphic image. This compared with a 50% success rate when text-only warnings were viewed. The researchers said their findings were important. "In addition to showing the value of adding a graphic warning label, this research also provides valuable insight into how the warning labels may be effective, which may serve to create more effective warning labels in the future," they said. In April the UK government launched a consultation seeking views on whether tobacco products should be sold in

Fish oils 'don't help ward off dementia' Taking fish-oil supplements in an attempt to avoid dementia could be a waste of time, researchers who have reviewed the best available evidence concluded. The Cochrane Review team found that supplements containing omega-3 offered no greater protection than dummy pills. The three large studies in the review, which appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, involved over 3,500 people. They tracked the health of the participants over a period of three-and-a-half years and found that those taking omega-3 scored no better in standard tests of and mental memory

performance than those given a placebo. The researchers stressed that despite the disappointing result of their study, fish is an important part of a healthy diet, adding that they still support the recommendation to eat two portions a week, including one portion of oily fish, which has been linked to a lower risk of heart disease. Experts have said that it is still unclear whether there might be some brain protection that kicks in if supplements are taken for

standardised packaging. As part of the consultation, it is exploring the options of no branding appearing on the packet, using a uniform colour for all packets or using standard font, text or imagery on every packet.

In the US, health officials ordered that graphic warning labels should appear on cigarette packets from September this year, but tobacco companies are challenging the decision in court.

The Tobacco Manufacturers' Association welcomed the consultation but added that there was no reliable evidence that plain packaging would reduce rates of youth smoking.

Australia is currently the only country which has so far agreed to plain packaging and a ban on branding on cigarette packets.

much longer than this and that longer-term studies are needed for more conclusive results. A spokesman for Alzheimer's Research UK said: "We know that what is good for the heart can be

good for the head so maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, exercising and keeping our blood pressure in check are all ways that we could reduce our risk of cognitive decline and dementia later in life."

ONE OF KATE MIDDLETON’S FAVOURITE ACCESSORIES HAS BEEN BANNED

Fascinators? Forget it! … certainly in Ascot’s Royal enclosure anyway for this year Around 300,000 people will be attending this year’s annual Ascot event in Berkshire which started yesterday. But, this year, there are rules as to what you can and can’t wear and racegoers will have to pass the strict fashion dictates prior to entering the grounds of Royal Ascot. Fascinators – those little bits of fluff and net that perch on top of ladies’ heads, and much favoured by the Duchess of Cambridge – are now banned from the Royal enclosure, and hats or a headpiece which has a base of at least four inches (10cm) are in. Women are also expected to wear skirts and dresses of a “modest length” clarifying previous guidelines that declared minis as

Digital Hitchcock A worldwide search for all the remaining copies of Alfred Hitchcock’s films has taken place and The British Film Industry have been busy digitally remastering them, including all nine of his silent films. Once they had collated all remaining copies of each of Hitchcock’s 58 surviving films they have painstakingly examined each analogue frame, including using some of the negatives used by Hitchcock himself, before turning them into digital images and “braiding” them to make sure all colour and contrast are correct. The British Film industry are to be showing all 58 of his surviving films as part of the Olympiad celebrations. Hitchcock has variously been described as the “equivalent of Shakespeare” for film and “the British big national icon of film”.

“inappropriate”. For men, black or grey morning dress suits with a waistcoat and tie are compulsory together with a grey or black top hat and black shoes in the Royal enclosure and cravats will not be allowed this year in the area. In the public area grandstands the rules are slightly more relaxed but women must wear a hat or in such areas fascinators will be allowed. The new rules come after many complaints were received about the “lowering of sartorial standards” at recent events such as this year’s Derby and a selection of waistcoats, ties and pashminas will be available at the entry turnstiles for those who are considered

not “up to scratch”. However, all is not lost. There are plenty of beautiful on-the-knee length dresses in the shops this year from anything from around €30 upwards. Wonderful hats in all colours, shapes and sizes can be bought here in Spain from the big department stores and loads of the small back street mum-of-thebride type dressmaking shops have them as well as fascinators. But don’t forget to try and match hat, bag and shoes wherever possible. Go for elegance rather than “pretty pretty barbie doll” looks and you’ll be sure to be one of this year’s Ascot winning fillies! Two hats: You can still be quirky (left) without looking daft - Sorry, Bea, but it was awful!

Talia opens Elton New Duran Duran DVD Talia Storm, just13-yearsold, with her bluesy rock powerful voice and big hair, opened the latest Elton John concert in Scotland on Saturday night. But it was her sheer determination that made it happen. After spotting David Furnish, Elton John’s partner, in a hotel restaurant having

breakfast, she went up to her room, collected a demo tape of hers and handed it him. Elton John phoned her and offered her the opportunity to open the show after hearing the CD. The debut went well and the audience described her as “amazing”.

MS for Ozzy’s son New dad Jack Osbourne, son of heavy metal rocker Ozzy and TV show wife Sharon, has just announced that he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis earlier in the spring and just two weeks after his daughter, Clementine Pearl was born. He told a magazine: "I was just angry and frustrated and kept thinking, 'Why now?’ I've got a family and that's what's supposed to be the most important thing.” "It's important for patients not to rush out and quit their jobs or break up relationships because

they may be able to live a full life with manageable symptoms," Rosalind Kalb, a clinical psychologist and director of the Professional Resource Centre at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, said. His devastated mum, Sharon, appeared on a chat show in floods of tears following the breaking of the news and thanked all the well-wishers who had come forward to offer support and kindness. Symptoms vary wildly with the disease and it is hoped that Jack’s will be minimal given the latest drug advancements.

Roger Taylor and Simon Le Bon, two of the members of Duran Duran along with the rest of the band can be seen strutting their stuff on their latest DVD, A Diamond Of The Mind, following their tour in February 2011. During the concert Simon Le Bon suffered a haemorrhage on his vocal chords which took three months to recover. The group was formed in Birmingham in 1978 by Nick Rhodes, John Taylor and Stephen Duffy, with the later addition of Roger Taylor and, after numerous personnel changes, Andy Taylor and Simon Le Bon. (None of the Taylors are related, and Roger Taylor is not to be confused with the Queen drummer of the same name.) The group has

never disbanded, but the line-up has changed to include guitarist Warren Cuccurullo from 1989 to 2001 and drummer Sterling Campbell from 1989 to 1991. The reunion of the original five members in the early 2000s created a stir among the band's fans and music media. Andy Taylor left the band in mid-2006, and London guitarist Dom Brown has since been working with the band as a

session player and touring member, and, at one time, supermodels were used in a video of the group replacing them with Naomi Campbell playing Simon Le Bon’s front man. The man is, after all married to super-model Yasmin Le Bon. As an aside, during a recent TV interview Simon Le Bon said he was devastated when Jedward didn’t win this years Eurovision song contest!

Peter Davis I realise that yours is a fairly new paper in Spain, but surely there is someone in your editorial office with at least some memory of the last decade or so of the past century? "Tio Pepe's Bull..."?? The famous +/- 90 bulls that have graced Spain's highways for many, many years were of the House of Osborne – famous for their 'Magno' cogñac as well as sherries. The bull actually bore the name 'Osborne' on its flank right up until the beginning of the '80's when the new law banning billboards from the main roads was to come into effect. But, while great debates were taking place on TV etc., about this law and its possible effects, Osborne quietly went round the country painting over their name – so leaving just the 'great black bull' as a traditional symbol of España..!

Mijas Pueblo

Editor says: OOPS! You are, of course quite correct that the famous huge black bulls that still dominate parts of the countryside were indeed from the Osborne brandy and sherry house. I still remember them

Joan Thompson Dear News, I thought it was April 1st, or spot the deliberate mistake on page 5 of last week’’s

Sally Tarbit As a resident of Estepona for over 10 years, I totally concur with 90% of the content of your article and only on Monday had a discussion with two ladies on the subject of the west wind – they referred to it as a 'poniente' which is correct if it is a west wind from the Atlantic through the Strait – however, as you say, the hot, dry, north-west wind is known locally as 'terral' but

Stargazing

The Gonzalez Byass fairly famous roadside advert was of a 'Tio Pepe' bottle with a sombrero and a guitar .... Now you've probably gone and caused a few cases of apoplexy in Jerez de la Frontera ...!!!

Estepona you have to be a 'local' to know it by name! When I smell it coming, all windows are closed tight shut to keep the house cool. However, I regret to disagree with the definition of the 'levante' in the article – from all my years living here, right on the coast, I am well versed in the pros and cons of this particular wind. In winter, it is almost always very strong, cold and thoroughly unpleasant because it leaves

Name supplied I can’t thank enough Funeral Care Spain who came very promptly following the very recent death of my husband at 4am. Their arrangements were fantastic, their general help with everything was vastly appreciated and their knowledge at such a time was immeasurable. My main contact was with Funeral Care Spain’s Neal Toplis who couldn’t have been more helpful. I would urge anybody living in Spain to get in touch with these people to avoid the pain and panic when you haven’t

all the plants, windows, rejas etc in its path covered in a vile, slimy, salty concoction. If you do not hose it off immediately, it leaves a residue of 'cal' on everything which is difficult to remove later and most plants are burned to destruction. In the summer months though, the levante is so refreshing because it is always cool and brings relief from the heat – I've never known it to be a hot, dry wind.

Coin got a clue what to do and have to make arrangements when someone has actually died. The arrangements can easily be made in advance through Neal and his team. I met these people through a seminar held by The News Helpdesk where they were among the speakers so, thanks must go to The News as well for putting me in touch with them. If anyone would like to contact them, they advertise in The News and their phone numbers are on their advert.

he Earth isn’t standing straight up on its end, instead it is tilted over by about 23 ½ º and it is this tilt that gives us our seasons. During June and July the northern part of the Earth is tilted towards the Sun giving us longer summer days and shorter nights whilst the southern hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun giving them short winter days and long nights. High temperatures in summer are not caused by the Earth being closer to the Sun – as it happens the Earth is at its most distant point from the Sun, known as aphelion on July 5th . The date that the Earth is at its closest point to the Sun (perihelion) happens on January 4th.

T

he longest day or Summer Solstice is a brief moment during the Earth’s orbit around the Sun and can occur on either June 20th or June 21st. This year’s solstice will occur at 00.09 tomorrow morning making it the 21st in Spain but 20th in the UK. At this time the Earth will be at its maximum northern tilt towards the Sun.

M

ap makers have drawn imaginary lines around the Earth to mark the extremes of the Earth’s tilt. The equator is the point around the world when the Sun will be directly overhead on the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes, the Tropic of Cancer is a line 23 ½ º above the Equator when the Sun will be directly overhead today on the solstice. The Arctic Circle is the point where today the Sun will not set below the horizon giving rise to the term the Midnight Sun. At the Antarctic Circle in the southern hemisphere the Sun will not rise above the horizon today.

Y

ou can try it for yourself today and tomorrow looking for your shadow when the Sun is at its highest point in the sky. Southern Spain is at about 36º north, as this is only about 13º above the Tropic of Cancer. If you stand outside at 2.00pm and look for shadows beneath your feet and lamp posts etc. you will see that they almost disappear. Why 2.00pm and not 12.00 noon? Well, General Franco set Spain’s local time one hour ahead of what it should be back in the 1930’s to fall in line with central Europe and also we are currently set to daylight saving time

C

which adds another hour on to the true solar time, so although your watch may say 2.00pm the Sun says that it is really 12.00 noon.

T

he Summer Solstice has been celebrated for thousands of years by civilisations all around the world. It is believed that Stonehenge in England was originally constructed to mark the rising of the Sun on the morning of the Solstice. Hundreds of modern day Druids were gathered inside the stone circles this morning hoping to catch sight of the Sun as it rose directly above the heel stone of the ancient monument. For at least 4,000 years before Christ, pagan religions have held huge festivals at Stonehenge to mark not only the Summer Solstice but also the Winter Solstice or shortest day of the year on December 21st.

I

n Spain the festival La noche de San Juan or the night of Saint John is also celebrated to herald the Summer Solstice. Fireworks and bonfires are lit on the beach and people swim in the sea at midnight whilst the more athletic (or crazy) jump over the burning embers. Virtually every country around the world has its own method of celebrating this most important of days.

T

he down side of course is that from now on the days gradually begin to get shorter and the nights get longer. The next celebratory date is on 21st September, the Autumn Equinox. On this date the Earth is half way between the Sumer Solstice and the Winter Solstice and so experiences 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night time.

S

o take a moment to remember your pagan ancestors who toiled on Stonehenge and Happy Solstice to you!

H

appy stargazing everyone!

Ferrari president urges F1 cost-cutting The teams are in negotiations about ways to keep a lid on spending but they have so far not reached a conclusion. Luca Di Montezemolo said "The world economic situation and that of Europe is very serious and F1 cannot ignore the fact.We cannot lose any more time. We need to tackle urgently, and with determination, the question of costs." At the same time, there is concern in F1 at the decision to switch to a new type of engine in 2014. The private teams are worried they will not be able to afford them.

Crutchlow the hero as Lorenzo takes the victory at British GP

Lorenzo, who this week signed a new two-year contract with Yamaha, eased to the win at the Northamptonshire circuit, which put him 25 points ahead of the reigning champion, Stoner. The race was also something of a triumph for the home rider Cal Crutchlow, who finished sixth despite starting from the back of the grid after a crash in practice on Saturday. Crutchlow defied the pain from a broken and dislocated left ankle to beat a host of riders, including

Ducati's multiple world champion, Valentino Rossi. The

British rider, who had started from 20th on the grid after spending most of Saturday in hospital having the ankle checked, said: "I'm a little bit emotional, it's been a tough weekend." Crutchlow told BBC2: "I'm pleased, we did a good job. It was a long day yesterday, they told me I wasn't allowed to ride, at the hospital. It was a tough lot of laps and a shame I wasn't at the front of the grid because I would have been on the podium."

The sixth place moved Crutchlow back up to fourth in the standings after his Monster Tech 3 Yamaha teammate, Andrea Dovizioso, pulled out when challenging for a podium spot. Lorenzo had a poor start to the race and dropped back to sixth but gradually worked his way to the front, where he battled with Stoner. When Lorenzo made his move,

the lead changed hands five times in half a lap before the Yamaha man finally pulled away. "I was fifth or sixth (off the start) so I did not want to make mistakes and I had to wait," Lorenzo said. "Fighting with Casey, I enjoyed it a lot. This season is just perfect." Stoner held off his teammate, Dani Pedrosa, for third, with the man starting in pole, Alvaro Bautista, just missing out on a podium spot on the San Carlo Gresini Honda.

British driver Anthony Davidson has suffered a broken back in a frightening crash at the Le Mans 24 Hour Race when his Toyota collided with a Ferrari, the clash sending his car airborne and out of the event. The incident happened in the fifth hour of the famed endurance race at Mulsanne Corner as Davidson's Toyota was clipped by the Ferrari of Piergiuseppe Perazzini. Davidson's vehicle left the race track, and turned on its side before smashing into the tyre barrier. The Ferrari also ended upside down as the safety car was summoned and the race stopped. A spokesman for Toyota, who have returned to the race for the first time in 13 years, initially said that Davidson was not seriously hurt. "He is walking, he is talking and he has gone to hospital," he said.

Museum Magic in Mijas The Malaga Motor Museum (Museo Automovilistica Malaga) joined with SOL Classic Car Club who were taking part in the recent International Day in Mijas to provide a selection of eye-catching cars to delight the many visitors.

But the Briton later tweeted that he had broken his back. "Well that was a big one! Lying in a French hospital with a broken back wasn't what I had in mind at this stage in the race..." As expected, Team Audi dominated for the second consecutive year and brought home their 11th overall title. Veteran Audi Sport Team Joest drivers Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer brought their Audi R18 E-Tron Quattro car to the front of the pack and made their money by staying there. As good as the Audi teams were, the Toyota cars ran amazingly in their first Le Mans 24 since 1999. With a fourth-place finish and two cars in the top seven, the company’s return to the race without very much testing was a resounding success.

Webb Simpson wins Stanford sentenced to 110 years for $7Billion tough US Open American Webb Simpson will tell you, he’s always been a leaderboard watcher. That’s why when the 26year-old from Raleigh, North Carolina, began surging up the leaderboard on final day Sunday at the U.S. Open, his caddy Paul Tesori pulled him aside and urged him to focus and, above all, steer clear of any leaderboards. The next time Simpson checked a leaderboard, it was just after tapping in his final par-putt on the 18th hole at Olympic Club. He was the leader in the clubhouse at one over par. On a course as deceptive and diabolical as Olympic Club, the assumption going in was that a proven champion would earn the U.S. Open title. Webb Simpson wasn’t on anyone’s list as a potential winner, yet his U.S. Open victory continues a tradition distinct to Olympic Lake Course, of a relative nobody earning one of golf’s highest honours. Simpson joins Jack Fleck (1955), Billy Casper (1966), Scott Simpson (1987) and Lee Janzen as the winner nobody saw coming. It was an uphill battle, quite literally, since Day 1 for the 156 players competing in

the 112th U.S. Open. The Olympic course was designed on a massive hill, leaving players impossibly hard golf shots with the ball often above or below their feet. If that weren’t enough, the tiny undulating greens were playing with blistering speed. Simpson shot 68 to set the target at one over and watched as 2010 champion McDowell missed a 25ft putt to force a play-off on the 18th. GMac at one point missed eight consecutive fairways and gave away three shots in the first six holes (which many people said was the toughest opening stretch perhaps in U.S. Open history). Padraig Ireland's

Harrington put up a serious challenge for a fourth major title and first since 2008 with a run of five birdies in 11 holes. But needing a birdie at the last to join Thompson, he ran up a bogey five after finding sand with his approach and ended with a 68 to finish three over. Lee Westwood took 73 to finish at five over, while Tiger Woods (73) was seven over.

Financier and cricket mogul Allen Stanford was sentenced to 110 years in jail for a $7 billion Ponzischeme on Thursday, closing the book on the flamboyant ex-tycoon's stunning fall from grace. The verdict will bring some satisfaction – but likely little financial relief – to 30,000 investors from more than 100 countries who were bilked by bogus investments with Stanford International Bank. Tom Maynard death: IPCC may review incident The police watchdog is to consider investigating the death of Surrey cricketer Tom Maynard. Maynard, 23, from Cardiff, died on Monday morning after being struck by a London Underground train. The Metropolitan Police said a man matching his description ran away after a car being driven "erratically" was stopped shortly before. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) confirmed it had been notified of the incident.

The IOC's ruling executive board met after fresh claims by The Sunday Times involving more than 50 countries. This included allegations that tickets for top events were available for up to 10 times their face value. The IOC has referred the allegations to its independent ethics commission. The Sunday Times has submitted a dossier of evidence detailing claims that Olympic officials and

agents had been caught selling thousands of tickets on the black market. The IOC could also review how Olympic tickets are distributed among member countries – more than one million were distributed to those taking part in the Games. The Sunday Times alleges that during a twomonth investigation in which reporters posed as Middle Eastern ticket touts, it found corruption involving people representing 54 separate countries. Accusations include an allegation a member of the

Greek Olympic Committee said he had "persuaded" Lord Coe, chairman of the London organising committee, Locog, to give Greece more tickets on the pretext demand had outstripped supply.

Locog denies the claim. A spokeswoman said: "With regard to 'boasts' by the Greek Olympic Committee' (HOC) that discussions on tickets took

place with Sebastian Coe, we can confirm this is untrue. "Seb received a letter from the HOC (as he did from other NOCs) and responded saying that tickets had been allocated in accordance with the IOC's ticketing policy. There was no further contact – either formal or informal – on this subject."

Euro 2012: Spain leave it late Spain coach Vicente del Bosque admitted his side had been below par as they reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 with a nervy 1-0 victory over Croatia. The defending champions' manager conceded his team would have to improve for a potential quarter-final against England, France or Ukraine. "There was a lack of clarity compared with other occasions," Del Bosque said. "The truth is it was not a great game overall and this should concern us. Things didn't go according to plan." The victory meant Spain topped Group C with seven points but in the second half,

the world champions came within a goal of a shock exit. Roy Hodgson’s England are clearly hopeful of transforming a position of promise into a place in Euro 2012's last eight by securing at least a point against cohosts Ukraine in Donetsk's Donbass Arena. It will be no easy task against the co-hosts, who need victory to sustain their own hopes of progression and will be backed by fervent and colourful support in the biggest match in Ukraine's history. But England with the return of Wayne Rooney will be hoping to progress to the quarter -finals where, if they

win the group they will play Italy and if they are runnersup they will face Spain. Hodgson had this to say: "We have come here with the England national team. We believe in ourselves and we want to do well. In some ways it's rather nice that people back home are hoping and even believing we can do well and we're giving them something to dream about and cling to. It will be the biggest test of Hodgson's tenure so far, but when an England manager admits he is enjoying the job it reflects the current climate in the camp, and that has to be a good omen.”

Fuengirola CC outclass Costa del Sol CC at The Oval What a fine place the Costa is to play cricket! It was yet another beautiful day at The Oval as these two teams returned to the field on Sunday after the league hiatus. CDS won the toss and chose to field hoping to restrict FCC to a modest total and it seemed to be working when they were stuck on 45/2 after 8 overs but then Tanveer came to the crease and scored an impressive 81 in 18 overs before being bowled by Craig. Rizwan then took up the torch for his team and put up a classy 59

runs. Great catches in the field by Tony at mid wicket diving to his left and Alan at long off as well as a great spell of 3 for 33 off 7 by Phill helped CDS bowl FCC out for 285 in their allotted 35 overs. Fuengirola then took to the field with Alan and Jake opening the batting for CDS, Alan going on to make a skilful 44 runs while his team mates fell in droves around him to the impressive bowling attacks of Tanveer and Rizwan who conceded only 13 and 14 runs respectively off their 7 overs

David Nalbandian investigated by police Police are investigating a complaint of alleged assault against David Nalbandian, who was disqualified from the Aegon Championships final after a line judge was injured. He was leading Marin Cilic 7-6 (7-3) 3-4 when he kicked a panel in front of Andrew McDougall's seat, injuring him. Umpire Fergus Murphy awarded the match to Cilic despite boos from the crowd. Nalbandian apologised at the time and has since been fined the maximum penalty of £6,400 by the ATP. A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "We are aware of an incident at the Aegon Championships on June 17th. "A complaint has been made and the Metropolitan Police Service is now investigating. The allegation is of assault."
