UK NEWS - “REAL-TIME” ACCESS WITHOUT A WARRANT

Social media surveillance out of date According to a former head of the UK's intelligence centre GCHQ, government surveillance has not kept up with sites like Twitter and Facebook and criminals, terrorists and paedophiles were using social networks as a "secret space". A report co-written by Sir David Omand for think tank Demos found that intelligence gathered from blogs, Twitter and Facebook should be "collected and used in a way that is both effective and ethical". The government is to announce plans to plug "gaps" in how intelligence services monitor the internet, which would allow intelligence officers "real-time" access to emails, calls and messages without a warrant. The proposals are expected to be outlined in the Queen's Speech. The report’s authors said

an "open" internet promoting the "free exchange of ideas" was an economic and public good and should be protected under any new regulation but they added that future intelligence gathering must be based "on respect for human rights and the associated principles of accountability, proportionality and necessity". Without that, there is a "danger that it could result in a chilling effect on the use of social media itself, which would have negative economic and social consequences for the country as a whole". The report found that the social

riots would enable the security services and the police to "gain situational awareness" and gauge "levels of community tension" while respecting users' anonymity.

The report's authors argue this approach would have helped the police deal with last August's riots, when Blackberry messaging was blamed by some for allowing rioters to coordinate their activities.

According to the Demos report, around 40% of people in the UK feel the police should be able to access information on social networking sites when investigating crime.

WORLD Rip-off!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

With running the Help desk you find out a lot about what institutions such as banks get up to. We have reports of interest rates for business loans being anywhere from 6.4% to 11.75% for exactly the same thing for instance. Times are hard for everyone at the moment so it pays to shop around and get the best deal but, even I was shocked at the disparity in the rates. How can a bank possibly justify charging double the interest rates? Well, the answer is, they don’t have to justify it and will do exactly as they please! And all this comes at a time that, for those lucky enough to have money to invest, you’d be lucky to get a massive 3% return on it. What a total rip-off these places are and all because they know that small businesses are struggling so they can get away with it. What weird weather we’re having. When I was out delivering the papers last week (yep, I do that too!) I started off with two fleeces. Then as the day wore on, I was down to one fleece, then just a tee shirt as it had become so hot. Then on Thursday it was so cold up here in Coin that I even put the fire on in the office to keep from freezing to death... ok, it wasn’t quite that cold but, what a difference a day makes.

Rooting out Argentina announced dole fraud

The government announced last Friday that it would seek to restrict imports of biodiesel fuel from Argentina. Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría told her weekly news conference that the government would use Spanish and European biofuel instead of that of Argentina, which is the biggest exporter of biofuel to Spain. Madrid imports almost three-quarters of all its biofuel, and shipments from Argentina were worth about €750 million last year. It was Spain’s first retaliatory measure since Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner seized control of the assets of Repsol YPF but fell short of the hard-hitting sanctions threatened by the government. Deputy PM Sáenz de Santamaría refused to comment on further actions that might be taken by Madrid, or give details of how the proposed biofuel restrictions would

Spain has been studying what sanctions it could impose under the terms of a bilateral investment treaty signed with Argentina in 1991 but trade lawyers have warned the government that it must consider the risks that any escalation in the conflict would present to the significant assets of other Spanish corporations operating in Argentina. So far the government

National News Public deficit confirmed The European Union confirmed on Monday that Spain’s public deficit for 2011 was 8.5 per cent of GDP and not 6 per cent as the Socialist government announced before the November 20th general election. After looking at the books, the new Partido Popular government announced before Christmas that the figure was really 8.5 per cent, which the Socialists claimed was a ploy to prepare the public for savage spending cuts the government has yet to announce. The PP general secretary said on Monday that the three-month old PP government “had received the worst inheritance any government had had since the transition to democracy”. Meanwhile, Rosa Diez of the Union, Progress and Democracy party (UPyD) accused the Socialists of lying about the public deficit and said that as a “penitence” they should “shut up” for at least a year during which they should “try to mend their ways”.

Liability for protest violence to be extended?

Schengen More nuns Treaty under temporarily investigation Members of the Daughters of Charity suspended order are being questioned in

The Interior Ministry wants to hold unions, political parties and other groups criminally responsible for any violence and vandalising caused by their members during demonstrations and public protests, according to the El Pais newspaper.

connection with the so-called stolen babies scandal.

Ministry officials also want to hold parents and custodians responsible if their sons or daughters are caught committing violent acts or damaging property. Ignacio Ulloa, secretary of state for public security, told the paper the aim is to make them pay for damage to property caused by their offspring. He added: "And if the culprits belong to a political party, union or any other group we will hold those organisations not only responsible for civil damages but also file criminal charges as well." The worst violence so far

this year was in Barcelona during the March 29th general strike, when small groups of protestors smashed windows, burned trash containers and battled with riot police who used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse them.

The government has decided to restore checks along the border with France for the duration of a European Central Bank (ECB) meeting to be held in Barcelona next month.

The EU is currently reviewing the Schengen rules, which apply to 25 countries, because the economic crisis has increased pressure to keep illegal migrants out.

The reason given for week-long suspension of the EU's passport-free travel treaty is that the Interior Ministry fears antiausterity protesters could try to disrupt the May 3rd ECB summit. Only a threat to public order is seen as grounds for restoring border controls under the Schengen Treaty.

Germany and France have sent a joint letter to be considered by EU interior ministers in Luxembourg next Thursday proposing that the EU to allow Schengen states to reimpose border controls for up to 30 days to prevent any major influx of illegal immigrants.

Only one nun has been officially charged so far – Sister María Gómez Valbuena, now 80, who was questioned by a judge on April 13th for allegedly stealing a baby girl from a mother and giving her to another family in the early 1980s. Another nun under investigation is Sister Juana Alonso, now 97, who served as mother superior at the Daughters of Charity convent in Tenerife from 1951 to 1970. One of her accusers said: "If they called Sister María to testify as a defendant in the case, then with more reason they should call Sister Juana, who used to take babies between the peninsula and the Canary Islands.”

The number of complaints has now grown to more than 1,500 but the associations involved in the case claim some 300,000 people could have been stolen at birth between the 1940s and the early 1990s.

Hikes in students' university fees

Convicted fraudster and former Lib Dem donor Michael Brown was flown into Madrid on Saturday from the Dominican Republic to face a hearing for extradition to the UK

University fees could go up as much as 50 per cent as part of the government’s proposed cutbacks in education announced last week. Students currently pay between €900 to €1,000 a year in university fees, about 15 per cent of the €6,000 average annual cost of their education.

Brown was arrested in January in the tourist town of Punta Cana over an unrelated fraud charge.

Under the plan, student fees could jump to a maximum of 1,500 euros next September. an estimated 1.5 million students attend the country’s 79 universities, 29 of which are privately run.

The Dominican police said he had been living in the Caribbean state under the name of Darren Nally. They said Brown had been charged with defrauding people in Punta Cana, but the alleged victims dropped their complaints so that he could be extradited. The island does

not have an extradition treaty with the UK. After going on the run, in 2008 Brown was jailed in his absence for seven years for stealing £36m from clients after posing as a bond dealer. Brown, 46, donated £2.4m to the Lib Dems before the 2005 general election. It was the largest ever donation to the Liberal Democrats' election war chest, funded through the use of

investors' money. In 2009, the Electoral Commission ruled the party could keep the money because it had been accepted in good faith, clearing the Lib Dems of all wrongdoing. Leader Nick Clegg said he was "very pleased" that Brown would now serve his sentence. A spokesman for the Serious Organised Crime Agency said that once

Spain officially agreed to the extradition, there would be a 10-day period for Brown to be extradited to the UK, adding that the process should start this week.

Gang forced disabled to beg The municipal Police have arrested eight people who had enticed disabled people from romania to madrid with promises of jobs and free health service. When they got here, they found they were expected to take up positions around madrid and beg for at least 12 hours a day and earn a minimum of €80. Police said the ten disabled people, all men aged from 26 to 51, who were currently begging, lived in infrahuman conditions in a room which had no windows.

Gas deal with Israel scrapped

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has started to woo far-right voters after losing narrowly to his Socialist rival in the presidential election's first round on Sunday. The gap was narrower than expected – with Francois Hollande getting 28.6 per cent to Mr Sarkozy’s 27.1 per cent. It was the first time a sitting president has lost in the first round. Marine Le Pen came third with the largest share of the vote her far-right National Front has ever won – 18 per cent. Around one in five people voted for Ms Le Pen, including many young and working class voters, putting her ahead of seven other candidates. Mr Sarkozy told her voters: "I have heard you." He said it was a crisis vote that doubled from one election to another “and an answer must be given to it”. Ms Le Pen, who campaigned on a nationalist, antiimmigration platform, said

she would wait until May Day next week to give her view on the second round. She told jubilant supporters that the result was "only the start" and that the party was now "the only opposition" to the Left. Opinion polls taken after voting on Sunday suggested that between

48% and 60% of Le Pen voters would switch to backing Mr Sarkozy in the second round. Reacting to the Front's success both the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned that populist politics was a threat to

Europe. Mrs Merkel said the Front's "alarming" rise would probably be "ironed out" in the second round. She said she would continue to support Mr Sarkozy.

the US Secret Service has said three more employees are resigning over the prostitution scandal that overshadowed the Summit of the americas in Cartagena, Colombia, last week. the scandal broke when a dispute between an escort and an agent spilled into the hallway of a beachfront hotel. the agent had agreed to pay her $800 for sex, but offered her only $30 the next morning. Up to 20 women and 12 agents were involved in the antics at the hotel. italy

Salvaging to start on cruise ship

If Mr Hollande wins the second round on May 6th he will become the first Socialist president in France in 17 years.

Belgian government resigns Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte tendered his government's resignation to Queen Beatrix, after Geert Wilders' Freedom Party (PVV) quit talks aimed at slicing 16 billion from the budget.

Mr Wilders, who was said to have stormed out of talks at the last minute, said the coalition's proposals would harm economic growth and affect many people's spending power. Socialist Party leader Emile

Roemer said he too was not prepared to support the attempt to bring the budget deficit below 3% by 2013. Mr Wilders’ party was not part of the coalition but supported the minority

government. A key question facing the political parties is whether to hold general elections before or after the summer recess. Many of the major parties want a vote in late June.

the US-based company titan Salvage and an italian firm specialising in underwater ship repairs, Microperi, are to start salvaging the capsized Costa Concordia cruise ship next month. Under the plans, the Concordia will be re-floated in one piece and towed to a port on the italian mainland. the operation, which will take a year, still needs to be approved by the italian authorities. thirty-two people died when the ship hit rocks off the tuscan island of Giglio with 4,200 people on board.

Ex-PM 'partly' guilty over 2008 crisis A special court in Reykjavik found former Icelandic PM Geir Haarde not guilty on Monday of negligence over the 2008 financial crisis that saw the island's economy go into meltdown. But it found him guilty of one of the four charges he faced: not holding cabinet meetings when things turned critical. The court said Mr Haarde would face no punishment and his legal

expenses would be paid for. Mr Haarde later described the verdict as "absurd", telling reporters it was "obvious that the majority of the judges have found themselves pressed to come up with a guilty verdict on one point, however minor, to save the neck of the parliamentarians who instigated this". Mr Haarde, 61, is the first world leader to face criminal charges over the financial crisis. Iceland's three main banks

collapsed during economic turmoil and the failure of online bank Icesave hit thousands. The collapse led to a dispute over compensation between the UK and Iceland, which still has to be resolved. Some Icelanders believe Mr Haarde has been made a scapegoat, but others have argued that public accountability is essential following the country's financial collapse.

Wal-Mart investigates bribery allegation US retail giant Wal-Mart said on Monday that it is investigating allegations published by the New York Times on Saturday that its Mexican subsidiaries used bribes to secure permits to build new stores. Under US federal law, it is a crime for US corporations and their subsidiaries to bribe foreign officials. The article also said top Wal-

Mart executives were aware of the alleged bribery campaign and failed to root out the problem. Sergio Cicero Zapata, an executive who had resigned from a Wal-Mart Mexican subsidiary in 2004, reportedly told the New York Times he had helped organise pay-offs to local officials in exchange for help getting permits to build new Wal-Mart stores in Mexico. He said he

alerted a senior Wal-Mart lawyer to these incidents in 2005. An internal investigation was launched, and uncovered a paper trail amounting to more than $24m in suspected bribery payments. The article said that the lead investigator recommended that Wal-Mart expand the investigation, but the company shut it down instead.

Following confusion over whether or not an appeal against the deportation of radical cleric Abu Qatada was made in time, Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke has said that it could take months to deport him because of the legal process.

his extradition after the three month deadline for doing so had elapsed. However, former attourney general Lord Goldsmith said that Home Secretary Theresa May should have “erred on the side of caution” and was wrong over her dates. A panel of five judges will now decide whether the appeal was valid or not and this will be considered in the court’s Grand Chamber.

In the meantime, Qatada could once again be considered for release on bail. Mr Clarke also complained that the furore over dates had taken attention away from a conference held in Brighton on reforming the European Court of Human Rights. Many conservative MPs believe that this European court should not be able to dictate what happens in Britain.

In 2010, it failed in a £2bn deal to buy United Biscuits, the company behind Hula Hoops and Jaffa Cakes, and it later lost out in a stake of French yoghurt firm Yoplait. Last year, Bright Foods announced a plan to purchase a 75% stake in Australian bread and chocolate firm Manassen Foods. It is China's largest sugar producer and expected to see revenue growth of nearly 20% this year.

More cats Previously unknown populations of Scottish wildcats are living in the Cairngorms National Park, conservationists have discovered. The new pockets of habitation have been identified by camera traps which captured images of the animals across the park and beyond. The Cairngorms Wildcat Project has also helped raise awareness about the cats. However, scientists warn the species remains under threat because of crossbreeding with domestic and feral cats.

Scotland Yard has said that there is still a “real possibility” of bringing criminal charges over the death of an MI6 spy, Gareth Williams, whose naked and decomposing body was found bundled into a locked holdall on August 25th 2010. Mr Williams was a mathematics expert working for GCHQ as a cipher and codes expert but had been on secondment to MI6 since March 2010. A senior Met Police lawyer asked the ongoing inquest not to allow video footage that could be used in a future prosecution to be made public, including video taken on Mr William’s mobile phone. Several high ranking security services personnel have been given anonymity during the inquiry. His family want to know if there was a third party involved in the actual killing, whether there was a security services coverup or whether someone had entered Mr williams’ flat after he had died to “clean up”. Scotland Yard have not been able to ascertain at this point whether or not a third party was involved.

Gas fraudsters Seville fair arrested kicks off The National Police have arrested 14 people in Marbella on several charges related to their posing as gas inspectors and parting unsuspecting householders from their money. It is one of the most common scams – a couple of men will turn up on the doorstep of an older person who preferably is foreign and lives alone. The language barrier helps the men to make “repairs” which are usually unnecessary and cost three or four times as much as

the regular gas companies would charge. The 14 detainees worked for a legally constituted company, unlike many who are “self-employed”. Proper gas companies

always warn householders of impending inspections by post, giving a date and a time, and people are advised always to check I.D. and never to admit anyone who turns up on their doorsteps on spec.

Briton arrested in Calahonda stabbing A 43-year-old Briton identified only as J.S. has been arrested in Mijas in connection with the stabbing of a 52-year-old Senegalese man, identified as M.N. in the Sitio de Calahonda urbanisation on Saturday night. The man was taken to

the Costa del Sol Hospital after he had given the police a description of his assailant. A police patrol pursued a man who fled when he saw them. When they caught up with him the man attacked one of the policemen and refused to identify himself.

However, his papers later revealed him to be a Briton. A search of the scene of the stabbing turned up a broken bottle which appears to have been the weapon used in the attack.

Town centre closed to vehicles In an effort to decongest Mijas Pueblo town centre which attracts a lot of visitors in cars, the local council has closed several streets to traffic from 10 am to 7 pm in the off season and from 10 am to 10 pm in the high season. During those hours, only residents will be able to enter with their cars.

Loading and unloading in the area has already been restricted for several weeks and is now only

allowed before 11 am. A council spokesman said bars and restaurants

will benefit because they will be able to use more pavement space without obstructing pedestrians.

Not all the crises in the world can stop Seville’s famous April Fair from going ahead. It started as usual with the lighting up of the fair’s Royal Gateway on Monday and if the 100,000 lamp posts in the fairground and their 300,000 light bulbs are

anything to go by, there is no shortage of money for electricity. Good weather has been forecast for the thousands of visitors who are expected to spend some €600 million before the fair ends on Sunday, April 29th. More than 1,500 Local

Málaga to be sailboat base The US company Star Clippers has chosen Malaga as the base for its operations between Spain and Morocco, starting in September this year. Last week, Star Clipper was in port for a meeting with local authorities to clinch the deal and on September 15th, its sister ship, Star Flyer, will set out from Malaga on the first of 10 cruises scheduled over the next 12 months. The sailboats use a hybrid system of engines and traditional sails, carry a crew of 72 who cater to 170 passengers who can indulge in what the calls “soft company adventures” during the cruise, such as watching dolphins from the top of one of its five masts. During the seven-day cruise, the sailboat will dock at Tangiers, Casablanca, Atlas, Cadiz, Gibraltar and Motril. A spokesman for Star Clippers, which is the biggest luxury sailboat company in the world, said the ships offer all the commodities of a four-star hotel. A spokesman for Malaga Tourist Board said the deal consolidated Malaga’s place in the big sailboat market.

think the little speech by one of the new Izquierda Unida MPs in the Seville Parliament during his swearing-in last week says it all: “I promise to fight with all my strength against the system that produces unemployment and corruption – the capitalist system”. Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo only had to say “Yes, I promise” or “Yes, I swear” but he couldn’t resist the temptation to make a political statement. He added “I declare myself disobedient and I promise to speak for those who have no voice”, ending with “Viva Andulucia libre” – Long live free Andalucia. Another IU MP promised under duress saying “I promise because of a legal imperative”, that is, the law made him promise, and a third said “I promise because I am a republican”. he Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) is predominantly Communist – hence the fight against capitalism – and would like to see Spain broken up into independent regions within a federal system – hence “free Andalucia”. Its main objective is to abolish the monarchy and install the Third Republic. Unfortunately, IU holds the balance of power in the Seville Parliament and has entered an informal coalition to keep the Socialist Party in power. All it needs is just one serious rift in this uneasy alliance to send the Andalucians back to the voting booths. The Partido Popular, which won the most seats in the March 25th election, but not an absolute majority, expects this to happen sooner or later. ayo Lara, the IU’s national coordinator, is acting as if his party also holds the balance in Parliament in Madrid – which he doesn’t, for which the Spaniards can be truly grateful – and has been much in the limelight since the Andalucian election. I suspect the political establishment has decided to give him enough rope in the hope that he will eventually hang himself. As a result of this new high profile, Lara is looking more and more like what he essentially is – a dyed-inthe-wool Stalinist who is very “old fashioned”, according to one political commentator on the telly the other night. In the same latenight political chat show, the four journalists present grilled a rather young, rather green IU spokesman, about the monarchy, pointing out that Spain has never had such a widely accepted democracy as it has had under King Juan Carlos. They also questioned the wisdom of changing the system from top to bottom in order to “achieve true democracy” when the country is in the throes of the worst economic crisis since the 1940s. They also pointed out that the most politically stable

T

C

countries in Europe are all constitutional monarchies. They quite politely made mincemeat of the poor IU kid and if he’s the best spokesman the party has then it’s in deep trouble.

Vindicated

T

he Socialist Party screamed “liar” when the newly installed PP government revealed that the deficit was more like 8.5 per cent than the 6.5 per cent announced by the Socialist government last summer. However, the EU – which also doubted the veracity of the figure – confirmed on Monday that yes, the deficit really was 8.5 per cent. So who’s lying now? The Socialists continue to insist that they have nothing to do with the economic crisis, which – if you listen to them – suddenly appeared on November 21st last year, the morning after the PP’s landslide general election victory. So who governed from April 2004 to December last year when Rajoy was sworn in? nd talk about double speak! Deputy general secretary Elena Valenciano called on “families to defend themselves against the government cuts”. The party has already called on workers and students to take to the streets but Valenciano insists the Socialists are not trying to “stir up radicalism or hostility”. They have a strange way of going about it. However, the government intends to crack down on “non-Socialist, non-radical protesters” in the future and will be introducing legislation to that end shortly which will hold the political parties and the unions responsible for the considerable damage caused by them. I doubt if these thugs can be stopped by anything but jail sentences because I suspect, along with the police, that most of them don’t belong to a political party or union but are just having fun.

A

All eyes on France

T

he only good thing about last Sunday’s election in France is that it may ease the pressure on Spain for a while. Europe now waits with bated breath for the final outcome on May 6th – will Sarkozy be able to pull it off and get the far right to vote for him or will Le Pen try to seize the leadership of the Right from him? All we can hope is that Angela Merkel will lose her staunchest ally and start listening to those who are telling her to ease up austerity measures before she sinks the EU altogether.

rastic times mean drastic measures, and the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has already forged a new framework to keep people who are not paying taxes or do not have legal papers from getting a health card. Since 2000, everyone – whether legal or not – had the guaranteed right to free medical care throughout Spain. However, the financial mess in the national health system, mixed with the high price of pharmaceuticals, and the abuse by many British, French, and Portuguese citizens who cross the border to see a doctor have pushed the Partido Popular (PP) administration to make serious changes in the way health services are provided.

A

ccording to a decree published Tuesday in the official BOE gazette, patients will now have to fork out a co-payment for many pharmaceuticals and services, specifically for orthoprosthetics (canes, crutches and wheelchairs), dietary supplements and ambulance calls that are not considered an emergency. Also included are experimental procedures that haven’t been scientifically proven “to treat” or “prolong the life” of a patient. This madcap of co-payment scheduling and what brands of pharmaceuticals will make up the new list will be left up to the different regions to decide. As the decree is published now, the co-payment will range from 40 per cent to 60 per cent, depending on a patient’s income. But the collection from the government’s plan will only yield a dismal €165 million annually. The co-payment plan goes into effect on July 1st.

F

or European Union residents, the government will now insist that before they can obtain a residency card for more than three months they will have to demonstrate they are studying or have “sufficient resources” or insurance to pay for medical services so that they “won’t become a burden to the system” during their stay in Spain. Before, no such conditions were placed on EU residents. Health cards from member states which form part of the European Economic Area will continue to be accepted, according to the decree.

B

ut the most controversial change is the suspension of free medical care for those people who are in the country illegally. Beginning on August 31st, health cards will be cancelled for all illegal migrants who do not have their

papers in order, according to the decree. It is estimated that between 150,000 to 450,000 people may lose their coverage in the next two years. Those under 18 will be treated as “Spanish residents” until they reach full adult age and illegal migrants won’t be turned away from hospitals if they need emergency treatment.

T

he announcement, which was made last Friday, brought on a wave of protests from the opposition, especially the United Left (IU) which believes that free health care is a universal right. The Socialists have asked residents to take to the streets on Sunday to protest against the changes in health care and other austerity measures. How the changes in the state-financed medical system are going to be challenged remains to be seen. But as the adage goes: one should never play around with one’s health.

Roughing up Repsol

President Cristina Fernández

I

t appears that the Argentinean government roughed up about a dozen Repsol officials the day police and two members of President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s Cabinet went to take over the YPF offices after the expropriation was announced on April 16th. Industry Minister José Manuel Soria confirmed in Parliament on Tuesday that some Spanish Repsol executives were threatened and physically abused by Argentinean police before they were given five minutes to collect their personal belongings and leave the building. The Foreign Ministry has said that some Spanish officials and their families sought refuge at the home of Repsol’s chief executive in Argentina before they could leave the country because they feared for their lives. What is ironic was what President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner said before this incident, when she announced the YPF expropriation: “I am a chief of state, not a thug.”

e News Help Desk Got a problem? Think there’s no way out?

Don’t go to someone who’s going to charge you a fortune for something that can so easily be fixed.

The News Help Desk has been set up with the backing of this newspaper and may well be able to sort it out for you at a far lesser cost.

Ours is a service where you can come for advice on how to deal with any problems you may have in connection with living in Spain, including legalising of houses, businesses, cars, etc. And if there’s something we can’t help you with, we will know someone who can, and do it legally too! Everything you tell us, of course, is in the strictest of confidence.

The News Help Desk is open every week by appointment at The News offices on Sierra Chica, opposite the La Trocha Commercial Centre, Coin (above De Cotta Law). We are on the A355 which is the road that runs between Coin and Cartama. If you live on the coast and can’t make it up here, give us a call and we can make an appointment to see you there. If you can’t come and see us personally, call Duncan Burrell on 607 590 977 or call us here at The News on 952 454 491 and let us help you to be able to see a light at the end of that very dark tunnel at last!

Community News Econ Pool Trophy Night Britain going for Gold Having dominated the league from quite early on it wasn't such a big surprise that Old London Bar went on to win the 2011-2012 Econ Fuengirola Winter Pool League. As usual the league was up and down throughout the season and Old London Bar were given a good run for their money at times by both Alba Garden and Scubies Bar. Handicapped by a slow start Alba Garden still finished third and Scubies second. Old London players Bobby Sunderland and Faisel Janjooa took joint first place in the Individual Player Rankings and won a two piece pool cue and case each for their efforts, with James Malyon also from Old London Bar coming a close second. The generous meal for two prize for The Top Ranked Players Knock-out at Saafi's Restaurant was put up by Faisel Janjoona from Old London Bar – not only did Faisel put up the prize

The well-known village of Mijas in the hills above Fuengirola has much to offer. I hadn’t been up there for a number of years – in fact not more than a couple of times since I came to live here over 15 years ago. However, that was rectified the other day when I popped in, really just to see what had changed and I found that, actually, quite a lot had. The town is kept clean and there is a big plaza in front of the tourist office with a lovely bronze life-sized statue of a donkey that you can sit on if you want to take photographs. The grotto style church is still there and people put personal effects there from people who are sick as an offering to the Madonna in the hope that she might make them well. There are also still many, many tourist shops but, if

you have a look around, there are now also some pretty up-market shops selling hand-made jewellery, art and craft works, leather goods including handbags and jackets and some fine marquetry works. I had a good look round and a rather pleasant wander through the winding streets but then I had to find somewhere to eat as I had worn myself out. Well, I found an absolute gem of a place in the shape of the Original English Tearooms. Tucked away in a typical Andalusian courtyard (although they do have a board outside telling you where they are) just up from the church this restaurant is an absolute must if you want a snack, lunch or just a cuppa. You can choose all manner of teas from the usual English Breakfast tea, to Earl Grey, to a great variety of infusions. A pot of tea will cost you just €1.50 and they even do decaffeinated tea –

an unusual find here in Spain – and iced tea if you’re feeling the need for a cool drink but don’t fancy anything fizzy. Coffees range from filter to instant, with or without caffeine. The sandwiches are filling and freshly made to order and you will find everything from a delicious bacon sandwich or a BLT to tuna or chicken mayo, sausage, bacon & egg, ham& cheese, cheese & pickles and cheese & onion. Or what about a baked potato? Just ask what their fillings are on the day! Or soup & a roll, or savoury scones, and their cream teas and high teas are to die for! I could go on and on

mentioning their delightful cakes etc. Suffice to say that, if you are in Mijas and are a bit peckish, don’t bother looking for anywhere else, just pop along to the Original English Tearooms – you won’t be disappointed with the food and it won’t hurt your pocket either! by Kym Wickham

A cat will hide for all sorts of reasons, whether it's the sudden appearance of the cat carrier (indicating an upcoming car trip), or the frightening noise of the vacuum cleaner. Some cats do not feel sociable if you have company visiting (human or animal). Unless you are in a hurry to make that vet appointment or to catch a flight, leave your cat alone for a little while. She will probably come out later when she's feeling more sociable. However, seek out your cat if she misses the next meal or will not come out of her hiding place for a longer period of time –it could be an indication of illness.

The best way to find a hiding cat is to ask yourself this question: "If I were a cat, where would I hide?" Next week we’ll give you a few hints on where to look if you have lost your little ball of fluff!

St. George's Day success in Benalmadena

Last Saturday saw hundreds of Brits and many Spanish congregating in Mezquita Square to celebrate St George's Day. Over 2,000 tickets were sold for the Grand Draw and proceeds will be going to Cudeca and ANABE. Non-stop entertainment was provided throughout the day. Over 30 stalls representing British

enterprises, clubs and associations were at the event which was opened by the Vice Consul Dominic Jackson. Organiser Sue Challinor representing the Costa del Sol Photographic Society expressed thanks to her team and all those including Benalmadena Ayuntamiento who made the event possible.

Robbers are out again The News has had an email from a lady called Bernadette who was robbed in Coin the other day. Here she tells you what happened so, no matter where you are you will “cotton on” to what’s going on. “I was in Mercadona yesterday about 2pm and drove my car into the underground car park, parked up and a guy came towards me pointing to the ground, I opened my door an inch and saw some money on the floor, he said I dropped it!!! Closed the door quickly and thought you idiot how could I have dropped that money when I just pulled up. Anyway I got out of my car and stood beside it just to see what he was up to. He realised that I wasn't going to pick it up and he ran towards another car where a lady was picking up the money on the passenger side of her car and she had her driver's side window open and her back to her car. He ran to try and grab her bag out of her car and I just shouted at the top of my voice "Oi what the hell are you doing". With that he dropped the bag into her car and ran off. She had no idea what was happening, I daren't leave my car to warn her, she finished picking up the money and got into her car and drove off!!

By this time more people were coming into the car park so I got my handbag out of the car and locked it, looked up and there he was just around the corner and said to me "Is okay?" I said no it bloody isn't okay. I then started walking toward some English people who were going into Mercadona and warned them. The daughter could speak Spanish and they went to the check-out in Mercadona to tell them about it, and they claimed they were going to call the police.” After we had this email, we also had a letter faxed to us from Margaret SpencerBrooks: “Please will you publish a warning that bag snatchers are operating in the Lidl car park in Coin. Yesterday I was robbed here for the second time in four years. This store does not have any visible security staff either outside or inside. Lone women drivers are those targeted. One woman (especially if elderly) is no match for two young male thieves. Someday a woman will be badly injured (or worse) if nothing is done to stop it. Surely such a large, international company can afford to employ security to protect customers on their premises.” We’ll see what happens.

Fundraising in Marbella Youngsters at a British school in Marbella are celebrating after raising more than €600 euros for charity. The cash will be donated to DEBRA Spain, which helps children living with Epidermolysis bullosa (EB), known as Butterfly children. They have skin as fragile as a butterfly’s wing that can blister at the slightest touch. The cash was raised over the last few months with a number of fundraising events.

Fuengirola Feria de los Pueblos 2012 The popularity of the Feria International de los Pueblos de Fuengirola has continued to increase since the first one was held in 1994. Every year thousands of visitors turn out to partake in what is considered by many to be the best of all the Fuengirola ferias. Written by Pete Woodall Making use of the infinitely suitable Fuengirola feria ground, its side streets, casetas and concert hall this year the feria (festival) runs from this Saturday 28th April through to Tuesday the 1st May (a public holiday) from 2.00 pm to 4.00 am. It is a spectacular multi-cultural event that displays the many traditional costumes, folklore and music of the different nationalities and ethnic groups that are resident in Fuengirola. There are a lot – too many

Mariachi Bands, fluid Egyptian belly dancers, dashing Argentinian tango dancers and Brazilian salsa, costumes and shows are everywhere. It's crowded too, the streets are full – couples, kids, grandmas, grandpas and teenagers, drifting from hall to hall and stand to stand, touching and tasting, taking it all in, as they indulge that most Spanish of traits to “paseando” through a feria ground. It is estimated by some that this year there will be close to, if not over, one million visitors.

to mention in detail – over 30 nationalities will be represented. Characterised by an abundance of smoke and rich smells the feria participants amicably compete to tempt passers-by to try their traditional national festival food. Most noticeable are usually the numerous south American stalls with their huge smoking meat parrillas (grills). They are out on the street cooking vast slabs of beef and sausage as they try to outdo the Spanish Moraga style espetos de sardinas and paellas or the Scandinavian barbecue roasted salmon. Indian curries, Polish sausage, American mac' n 'cheese and popcorn, Hawaiian cocktails, German beers, Cuban mojitos, Moroccan mint tea and sticky middle east sweet dishes, each one

proudly offers a taste of their home land. The Fuengirola Feria de los Pueblos is short of nothing when it comes to ambiance, food, drink, entertainment and fun, it really is excellent. the Inside (festival halls) another colourful world of crafts and traditional wares, bars with tables, chairs, and even more food, entertainment and dance, Mexican

Director: John Madden Starring: Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith Based on the book by Deborah Moggach called “These Foolish Things”, the story follows a group of British OAP’s who, unhappy with their lives in the UK, decide to “outsource” their retirement for what they hope is a less expensive option. The seven protagonists include household names such as Judi Dench as a recent widow, Bill Nighy and Penelope Wilton as an unhappily married couple

and Maggie Smith as a bigoted racist. After being mislead by advertisements for the ‘newly restored’ Marigold Hotel they are less than happy arriving to find it run down, with many items missing, however the manager (Dev Patel) assures them “Everything will be alright in the end and if it is not alright, then it is not the end.” Despite

their

initial

misgivings (most of) the ensemble decide to embrace this new experience and we see them travel and explore not only India, but their own characters. They have all made this long journey with an aim for selfdiscovery and some are forever transformed by their shared experiences. The love stories are delicately handled and not overdone. Although there are inevitably a few

predictable aspects they don’t overshadow the hopeful message of the film about facing up to life’s hardships and embracing the future. The script for the most part was clever and very well written, the acting was also great, with all the actors on top form. However, the film's length could certainly be felt at times, and can be a little boring in its two-hour running time.

Director: Matt L. Lockhart Starring: Jason Mewes, Richard Riehle & Floyd Abel

Spanning five decades from the Texas Revolution through the American Civil War, True Women is a story of love, friendship, survival and triumph. Telling the story of three women, all very different in their ideals and personalities, but similar in their strength and courage, True Women is a sweeping saga of love, war and adventure told on an epic scale. The story begins with Texas being taken from Mexico, and follows two girl friends, one living in Kentucky and the other one in Texas. It follows the massacre of the Indians, the American civil war, and goes up to the fight for

When an electrical fire aboard a million-dollar yacht shorts the engine and communication equipment, a group of young, rich friends find themselves marooned in the middle of the deep Atlantic. But when they drift into the realm of the mysterious Watermen, an ancient and brutal clan of mariners who despise outsiders, they become locked in a deadly fight for survival. Trapped in the middle of the ocean, the group are mercilessly hunted down one by one by the savages and bloodthirsty seafarers. This independent slasher flick has been shown at a

investigation into the Alchemist. As Vidocq is presumed dead, his young biographer, Etienne Boisset, decides to take the investigation into his own hands. lthough the story sounds A simple enough, there are many twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat, it´s a bit like Sherlock Holmes on acid. If you read my column, you´ll know that I am not particularly fond of action films, so as you can imagine special effects and action scenes in a period piece are a giant no-no, with me. However, “Vidocq” manages to pull it off, the effects are spectacular and the action scenes aren´t overdone. Another interesting thing about this film is it is the very first feature film shot with Sony digital 1080p 24 fps cameras, which are the same cameras used in “Avatar”, which makes it quite advanced for its time. This film is visually stunning it's almost like watching a painting in motion.

Everything about the visuals, from the sets to the costumes, from the lighting to the camera angles, contributes to a surreal, while still dark and gritty, atmosphere. y only complaint with M “Vidocqc” is some of the close ups, are a little too close for my liking, they do give the film more atmosphere and depth, but this is just my personal complaint. The English title of “Vidocq” is “Dark Portals: The Chronicles of Vidocq” if you decide to look for it. ow a small history lesson N about the real Vidocq: He was an 18th century French criminal turned criminalist. As a fugitive from French justice, he first offered his services as a police spy and informer. Later, he became so successful at catching criminals that he was named the first chief of the Sûreté, in 1811. idocq is considered by V historians as the father of modern criminal investigation. He introduced record keeping , criminalistics, and the science of ballistics into police work, was the first to make plaster casts of shoe impressions, held patents on indelible ink and unalterable bond paper and founded the first modern detective agency and credit bureau, Le Bureau des Renseignements. idocq's regard for his V fellow man also was legendary. He helped the poor and abandoned of Paris. At the same time as he was pursuing the guilty, he was also freeing the innocent. Vidocq's personal character, coupled with his skills as an investigator, are the source of The Vidocq Society's inspiration for solving crime and helping others.

There is a tendency to want to charge in and solve all the outstanding issues but be careful that you don’t allow yourself to act on impulse or emotion, make sure that you base your actions on solid facts and well thought-out logic. Time is on your side and you need to consider all the circumstances your actions and decisions may have for both now and in the future. Listen to what others are saying and look for the deeper issues that could be going on This is a time when others around you suddenly see your potential and want to rally around. You have to make sure that you believe in your abilities and find a way to rise above any doubts. POCO A POCO

SPANISH By Valerie Mitchell

If something is not sitting well with you, trust me, in time it will. It is not up to you to be judge and jury and there could be a situation that you would do better to leave alone. It doesn’t matter what others are doing around you as long as you keep your own house in order. This week is very social in nature and is designed to be exciting and fun, it is a great time to share ideas and network with others.

In spite of having lived in Spain for many years, eating out of doors a lot and, as a vegetarian, consuming an inordinate amount of gazpacho, I have to admit I have never found a fly in my soup. However, were this situation to arise, one wonders what the reaction of the waiter would be. I can almost picture a Manuel look-alike rescuing the struggling fly and placing the soup back in front of me with such gentle chivalry that it would seem churlish of me to protest. Well, let's hope the mosca en la sopa situation doesn't arise but there are many situations in a restaurant which can be easily solved with a very little learning. When you arrive and want to indicate how many of you will be dining you simply say Somos ______ and the number of people there are. Somos cuatro, Somos ocho and so on. I assume you know your numbers but for visitors to the area it goes uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez. Any more and you can always resort to hand signals. If you need a fork, you say Falta un tenedor, a knife, Falta un cuchillo, a spoon, Falta una cuchara. A small spoon like a teaspoon is una cucharita. If you want to complain because the fork is dirty, you can say El tenedor está sucio (Or you can give it a vigorous rub on your napkin) ¿Qué recomienda usted? Means What do you recommend? Of course, this is a risky question to ask. But be adventurous. Ask questions and if you don't always understand the answers what is the worst thing that can happen. Perhaps a plate of octopus - pulpo. Or snails - caracoles. Pan (bread) is not usually served with mantequilla (butter). It is also often charged for separately even if you haven't asked for it so if bread is brought to you and you don't want it simply say No he pedido pan - I didn't order bread. This expression can also be used for situations when you are brought the wrong thing. No he pedido la merluza - I didn't order the hake He pedido el bacalao - I ordered the cod. And if you want to express how good the food is Está delicioso. Buen provecho - Enjoy your meal. Ya está- That’s it

LESSON

August 23rd September 22nd

This week the focus is on your finances and your material world. You may be so focused on this area of your life that others may start to feel a bit neglected. The long term perspective is important to you and your actions may have a significant impact on the future. You are setting something in strong motion and things are picking up speed, perhaps more than you have time or room for in a day. Being engaged in life is when you shine.

There may be a desire this week to care for others as your empathy increases towards loved ones. You have been having your fair share of relationship wars of late and there may be a few more battles in the making but you are learning how to win without force. Remain true to yourself by holding your ground and allow another to step up to the mark for a change. By the weekend your focus shifts to your financial situation with new ideas on how to improve things.

‘Landmark’ study Being beside the of breast cancer seaside is best What is currently called breast cancer should be thought of as 10 completely separate diseases, according to an international study which has been described as a "landmark". The researchers looked at frozen breast cancer samples from 2,000 women at hospitals in the UK and Canada, focusing on the genetics of the tumour cells – which genes had been mutated, which genes were working in overdrive, which were being shut down. The study showed that all the different ways the cells changed when they became cancerous could be grouped into 10 different categories –

named IntClust one to 10. These categories could improve treatment by tailoring drugs for a patient's exact type of breast cancer and help predict survival more accurately. A spokesman for Cancer Research UK, which funded the study, said: "This will change the way we look at breast cancer, it will have an enormous impact in the years to come in diagnosing and treating breast cancer.” He said the

Eye cell transplant restores sight in mice Scientists at University College London's Institute of Opthalmology have successfully restored the sight of visually impaired mice by transplanting lightsensitive photoreceptor cells into the back of their eyes. The experiment could lead to new treatments for people who have lost their sight as a result of degenerative eye diseases. The loss of photoreceptor cells is the leading cause of blindness in many human eye diseases, including agerelated macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and diabetesrelated blindness. The eye has two types of photoreceptors – rods and cones. Rod cells are especially important for seeing in the dark as they are extremely sensitive to even low levels of light. The scientists injected immature rod cells from young healthy mice directly into the retinas of adult

mice that were genetically altered to be night-blind. After four to six weeks, the transplanted cells had formed the connections needed to transmit visual information to the brain, and functioned nearly as well as normal rodphotoreceptor cells. A spokesman for the Medical Research Council (MRC), which helped to fund the study, said: "This is a landmark study that will inform future research across a wide range of fields including vision research, neuroscience and regenerative medicine.” He said it provided great encouragement for the development of stem cell therapies to address the many debilitating eye conditions that affect millions worldwide.

charity would begin using the new criteria in clinical trials it funded. However, the new breast cancer rulebook could take some time to directly benefit patients. The researchers need to prove that the 10 classifications actually provide any benefit to people with breast cancer, before they can be used by doctors. That process is expected to take three to five years.

A study of 2,750 people by the European Centre for Environment and Human Health to examine the effects of different types of outdoor environments on people found that the bracing seaside air had a more positive effect than the countryside or an urban park. The people who participated in the twoyear study said the seaside, countryside and urban parks were all refreshing, but they experienced the greatest sense of pleasure when exercising beside the sea. The study found that people in six different age groups always identified ADVERTISING FEATURE

Prevention can save your life The breasts are the symbol of a woman’s femininity, a crucial part of her sexuality and a bond between mother and child during maternity. But breasts are also the female organs that generate the highest incidence of cancer among women. Hence our interest in making it widely known that early detection is the only way to achieve the highest number of cures using the least aggressive treatments. The mammogram is undoubtedly the most effective method of cancer screening (the method used for early detection of the disease). It can detect 35% to 45% of tumors smaller than 1 cm, when we cannot yet feel them. However, this test is less sensitive on women younger than 40 due to the higher density of the breast tissue at a younger age. Therefore, it is important that women under 40 assess their family-related risks. For example, whether they have any direct relatives with breast

cancer in the family or whether they have ever had a breast disease, to ascertain which check-ups are needed. In these cases, a complementary ultrasound can diagnose small hidden abnormalities that the mammogram is unable to detect. And we must not forget the importance of breast self-examination. All women should be familiar with their own breasts and the changes that occur during the monthly cycle, so they can make an appointment with a healthcare specialist if they detect anything unusual. Finally, a clinical breast examination should be part of an annual well women check-up, together with the cervical smear test. Non-aggressive and cost-effective methods are available today for the early diagnosis of breast diseases. Don’t forget that prevention starts with you. from Medilink www.medilinkspain.com

the seaside as being a more positive experience than inland parks or country walks. This preference for the coast was found both in the general population and among walkers. There are no clear conclusions about why being beside the seaside should be more refreshing than other types of settings but there are a number of possible associations. One is that people respond positively to the way light plays on the water, or the sounds of the sea and the researchers said there could also be social or cultural expectations about the

benefits of the seaside. They also believe happy childhood memories could play a part. Despite a growing awareness of the importance of relaxation in preventing ill health, the researchers said not enough is known about how this is experienced: "There is a lot of work on the beneficial effects of visiting natural environments, but our findings suggest it is time to move beyond a simple urban versus rural debate and start looking at the effect that different natural environments have on people's health and wellbeing."

With the BlinD rOunDs OVer, it Was time tO start Battling it Out

e Battle of e Voice begins … but some good contestants were lost due to the format of the Battle rounds Sunday saw the second of the “Battle Stages” begin between team mates from the four teams. The four judges had previously picked ten singers in the blind heats and now it was time for them to battle it out, two at a time, for a place to go forward. Jessie J’s team was up first with David and Cassius supposedly battling it out to Michael Jackson’s “Beat it”. However, it was more of a slap fight than a battle and neither seemed particularly up for the fight, more like they were terrified of not getting picked! In the end, Cassius was chosen to go through to the live rounds but he’ll absolutely have to up his game against some of the others who will be going through. Tom Jones’ first pair was battling Scots grandmother Barbara and equally strong voiced holiday camp singer Leanne. Their voice coach said that she had never heard two

such powerful voices. The song chosen by Tom was Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory”. However, one had to go and the winner of the battle – chosen by Tom – was Leanne, although he said that it was the hardest thing he’d ever done in his life. Team Will.i.am had Kate Read who sang for her mum and hat-wearing Frances Wood. Entirelt their singing coach had said that he could hardly hear them and they needed to project their voices – the opposite to Tom’s pair of ladies. When the girls said they had become good friends Will told them that this was a battle and no place to play pals. Chosen for their song was “Ironic” by Alanis Morriset. Compared to Tom’s two, it was a shame the two girls hadn’t come up against them because Tom’s two should have both gone through. Reedy voices and continuing lack of projection made them sound like two

"I said 'I've got you, I'm not one of them', but they still wanted photos," Parsons told the Sunday Star-Times, adding he enjoyed his brief moment of fame. "I don't think I could do that everyday, but for the three minutes I was posing and running away from the girls I liked the attention."

Danny had to choose between Dave and John James. The winner was David with the split lip of whom Danny said he could hear things in his voice that he wished he had himself – adding that he believed he could still get another 25–30% out of his voice to take him forward. However, of John James he also said that his voice was something he had been looking for within his team for the show. So, some who have great voices will lose out because of the show’s format while others will get through with hardly any voice at all. Perhaps these are teething problems that will get sorted for next season – if there is one.

One’s cards Forget mugs and face masks, the latest ‘must have’ of royal memorabilia is a set of Top Trumps card game cards – just in time for the Diamond Jubilee – at £3.99 a pack featuring the Queen’s 30 favourite things. Top of the deck of ‘One’s Favourite Things’ is Prince Philip while, right at the bottom is royal bank Coutts and there’s even ‘One’s Favourite Football Team’ – Chelsea FC.

Of the name they said: "We found Astala in a baby name book – quite an obscure one. This is going to be a very stylish baby. I wanted a Jewish name because my fiance is a Jew and the name is the male version of Esther."

e wrong Direction New Zealand teenage girls turned out in their thousands over the weekend hoping for a glimpse of British-Irish boy band One Direction but it seems not all knew who they were screaming for. A radio producer wearing a beanie, dark glasses and a scarf, was mobbed when he left an Auckland hotel after interviewing the stars with young girls believing he was a member of the five-piece band. Guy Parsons, 23, is older and taller than members of One Direction

schoolgirls trying their hand at karaoke. With very similar voices and neither of them really battling for their place Will’s decision was a hard one but in the end he chose Frances to carry on with him to the live rounds to come.

Belt up! The double-wrap-around belt saw the light of day yet again when Victoria Beckham wore her favourite accessory to the promotional event for the Range Rover Evoke that she helped design. First seen at the New York Fashion Week in February, the belt has appeared at various events and fashion shows since.

The five ranking categories where you can "trump" your opponent are: Age; Magic Moment; Pomp and Ceremony; Off Duty; and in this version – ‘Queentessential.’

The Voice battles it out

Beatlemania lives Previously unseen snapshots of the Beatles are to go on sale after sitting in a family album for nearly 50 years. The 20 black and white photos give rare behind-the-scenes glimpses of the Fab Four. Taken while the band were filming A Hard Days Night in 1964 at London’s Scala theatre, the photos show the band playing but also in between scenes during their down time. Peter Allchorne, the then manager at props Pinewood Studios was allowed to walk around with his Kodak Retinette camera taking photos despite strict regulations against this happening. The 84-year-old is now putting them up for sale by auction. He didn’t like their music and was into jazz according to his granddaughter so for him the photos hold no

sentimental value. An estimate on the photos and negatives has been given as £2,000 and the entire lot at £10,000. Also in the sale will be a menu card signed the four on a trip to New York on a BOAC Cunard from London. The sale is due to take place at the Omega Auctions in Cheshire on May 19th and will be broadcast live by the auctioneers.

R H Deyton Like many couples, my husband and I are thoroughly tired of airport hassle and have decided not to fly anywhere ever again unless absolutely necessary. It seems to me that Frank Sinatra’s “Come Fly With Me” lyrics are out of date so I have re-written them and hope that your readers enjoy them. Sing along to the original tune:

By Ken Campbell

If you would like to be kept up to date or take part in any of the events then go to www.kencampbell.info

It’s quite a joke, we can have a smoke, And a drink when we say, Let’s do chez nous and have a holiday! And when we’re in there, We can do just what we please, At our ease, No more airports, no hassle....

Let’s stay at home, let’s have a holiday, We’re a no fly zone, we are on our own, And our shoes don’t get Xrayed.

I have a problem you may be able to help me with, I am with Vodaphone for broadband and landline connection but

We have eaten in many superior resturants over the years and were very impressed with this restaurant.

Sunday morning, what a lovely day, We can just get laid, no chamber maid, Or beans in a luke-warm tray. We’ll choose staycation, not vacation, Any day. Let’s stay at home, let’s have a holiday!

Sorry to bother you but just seen your article re Vodaphone in the The News today.

My husband and myself were invited by our friends Kym and Geoff from The News to sample the Sunday Lunch menu at Nueva Kascada.

Do you know how I can connect and how do I obtain an English speaking operator. Editor says: I will pass on your enquiry to Duncan Burrell at The News Helpdesk and he will find out for you and let you know.

UK It is set above Marbella and we were seated outside on the terrace with a view of the sea – it was a beautiful setting. The tables were covered from the elements by sai- like canopies.

where you wished you could order everything – so we did the next best thing and ordered the trio of assorted starters. And as for dessert, the chocolate fondant was delicious!!

The staff were extremely courteous and went out of thier way to accommodate thier customers. We enjoyed the food as it was of a very high quality and extremely fresh in both appearence and taste.

Well done –- we will definitely go again when we return to Spain and would recommend it to our friends.

The menu was varied but not confusing and there was something for everyone.

Thanks Kym and Geoff lovely lunch.......great company. Editor says: You are most welcome and we look forward to seeing you on your return.

It was one of those occasions

Global Astronomy Month 2012 Calling all astronomers, April 2012 has been named as Global Astronomy Month and is your opportunity to get to see some of the wonders of the night sky all for free!

A

stronomy is the oldest of all the sciences and the easiest to study. The very first astronomer was a cave man who stepped out of his cave one night many thousands of years ago and looked up at the sky and wondered what all those sparkly things up there could be. You don’t need any special equipment to study astronomy and there can’t be many people who have never at some time looked up at the stars and wondered themselves at what they saw.

P

oets, songwriters, authors, artists and lovers have all looked up at the night sky for inspiration and movie makers have produced an almost infinite number of Sci-fi movies featuring either travel to the stars or visitors from space coming to Earth. The discovery channels on TV are awash with documentaries about space and rockets. The BBC TV programme The Sky at Night is the longest running TV programme with the same presenter in the world. Newer presenters such as Professor Brian Cox have become celebrities with their own series of programmes about astronomy which have been watched by millions of people. No other science seems to capture the public’s imagination quite like astronomy does.

M

any people who are famous in other fields are also keen astronomers; impressionist John Culshaw, author Terry Pratchett, comedy actor Will Hay, Westlife singer Shane Filan and Irish comedian Dara O’Briain are all closet astronomers. Queen guitarist Brian May actually holds a doctorate of astronomy and carried out important research when he was at university. Literally billions of dollars are spent every year on space research – either on extremely powerful telescopes or space flight. The Americans spent more money landing on the Moon during the Apollo program than on any other single project except the military.

A

stronomy is looking up! And this Saturday night members of the Mijas Astronomy Society are contributing toward the Global Astronomy Month event by holding a public observing session and inviting you to go along and get to see many of the celestial objects for yourself using

very powerful telescopes. Unfortunately I’ll be back in England at the time attending the Liverpool Global Astronomy event, but experienced astronomers such as Lee Osborne and Peter Hammond will be there to guide you through the sky and show you some spectacular objects. Some of the society’s telescopes can even be attached to a video camera so that the images can be viewed directly on a computer screen.

O

bjects on their viewing list will begin with the mountains and craters of the Moon, Venus, Mars and the spectacular rings of Saturn. They will point out various stars and constellations such as The Plough and Orion along with astrology constellations Gemini, Cancer, Leo and Virgo. Would you like to see some deep space objects like galaxies, nebulas and star clusters? Possibly a few shooting stars will appear and definitely some artificial satellites will be visible and just to add to the event NASA are even going to send the International Space Station directly overhead at 21.54! If you’ve never seen the ISS then this will be a perfect opportunity to wave at the astronauts. The ISS is as big as a football field and can easily be seen from Earth shining brighter than anything else in the night sky as it travels at 17,000mph 250 miles above you in space.

on’t miss this golden opportunity to be involved in an amazing evening of stargazing and especially take the kids along to be spellbound. It all kicks off at 9pm until midnight this Saturday 28th April at the La Cala Feria ground just off the N340 La Cala de Mijas near Fuengirola. If you have a telescope or binoculars of your own then feel free to bring them along for some expert tuition from the astronomers. Further details can be found from the organiser Lee Osborne email info@astronomycostadelsol.com

Fuel sting triples price of car hire Families on holiday are being hit with a sting that can treble the cost of car hire, it has been revealed. The underhand practice means firms appear cheap when customers are shopping around at home for the best deal, but when they pick up the keys they face a large fee for a full tank of petrol. Which? Travel sent undercover researchers to Spain, where one researcher in Malaga was told the cheapest car hire price was €30.25 – but when fuel was added on arrival the price rose to €94.25.

Vettel gets back to winning ways in Bahrain Sebastian Vettel led for almost the entire race at the Sakhir circuit, Manama Bahrain, but storming Lotus duo Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean made sure it was never comfortable for him at the front. It was Vettel’s 22nd victory and his first in Bahrain. The victory lifted him from fifth in the series into the lead, ahead of Lewis Hamilton. McLaren were also overtaken in the constructors' standings by Red Bull. Vettel began the race on pole and got off to a perfect start while the desert sand on the track rose up behind him and many drivers lost position because of the slippery surface. It was an exciting race with many overtaking maneouvres and three pit stops for tyre changes by most of the cars.

will carry out a thorough investigation of their pitstop procedures after suffering costly holdups in Bahrain for the third successive race. Jenson Button's hopes of victory in China last weekend were wrecked by a slow stop and it was team mate Lewis Hamilton's turn on Sunday with two agonizing delays. The 2008 champion, who also lost time in Malaysia in the pits, ended the race in eighth place, whilst Button had to abandon after problems with his differential and a cracked exhaust. Nico Rosberg had to

The race stewards cleared Rosberg of any wrong doing in the incident with Hamilton, deciding that the Mercedes had been far enough in front to make his wide line through turn 4 justifiable. New investment heralds changes at Mifaflores! Miraflores Bowls Club announced this week some exciting changes that will take place over the next few months.

C.O.G.S. play locally at Alhaurin Golf The course looked great from the clubhouse and didn’t disappoint when playing it. In great condition as always. This outing was slightly different as we played our usual stableford competition and our inhouse individual knock out competiton. See results later. Nearest the pin on hole 10 our captain Terry Birtles. Nearest the pin in two shots on hole 4 Ian Vaughan. Longest drive on hole 9 Charles Randall. Well done to all. The team prize with 89 points went to the team of Joe King, Duncan Burrell, Charles Randall and Sav Ramayon. The three top places in the main comp of the day were as follows. In 3rd place with 34 points on count back was Charles Randall. In 2nd place with 35 points was Andy Macfarlane. In 1st place with 36 points was Ian Brewer. Terry’s Par three competition overall winner with a staggering 16 points was Ian Brewer. Well done Ian you must have played your socks off. Nearest the pin hole 3 Dave Haworth. Hole 5 Ian Hold. Hole 12 Eric Barton. Hole 14 Adam Robinson. Thanks as always to Terry

for supplying the prizes. The Wooden Spoon went to Guillermo Buero with 6 points. I played with Bill (as we call him). He is a great guy, tries like hell and really enjoys himself and that’s all that matters. Anyway Bill you won yourself three golf balls. The individual In-House knock-out competition results were as follows. Nig Bowler 20 points Brian Millwood 18 points. Terry Birtles 26 points Ian Vaughan 26 points. Terry goes through on count back. Ian Brewer 36 points Dave Williams 24. Joe King 29 points Dave Haworth 31 points. Andy Macfarlane 35 points Adam Robinson 34 points. Mike Brian 19 points Ian Hold 18 points. Sav Ramoyon 29 points Charles Randall 34 point. Our next outing is at El Chapperal 11.50hrs on the 17th May, as always all are welcome. Thanks to our Captain Terry Birtles, Andy Macfarlane and Dave Haworth for their organisation. News Flash. Ian Hold is the first member of our club to attend The Mike Brian’s Golf Academy for golf improvement lessons. Hope you find it beneficial Ian. Nig Bowler. Chairman.

Firstly, a decision has been made to invest in a new carpet for the west green, with the existing carpet and a new underlay going to the east green. Bowlers may recall that the east green base was relaid in 2006. Unfortunately, despite the work being carried out by the same specialist, the result was not as good as the excellent west green. Therefore, some remedial work will be carried out before the carpet is laid. This will then provide us with two excellent bowling surfaces to provide the best facilities to all bowlers on the Costa del Sol. Negotiations are under way with manufacturers but it is anticipated that everything will be completed before the new bowling season gets underway in late September. As part of the review that was undertaken before deciding on replacing the carpet, the current membership structure was considered and it was

2011 Footbowl Winners Dorothy & Paul, and the runners-up with Dudley

decided to implement a number of changes in this respect. The result of this is that with immediate effect there will no longer be a joining fee payable (formerly €150). The existing annual membership category will continue running from January to December (Currently €425 p.a. prorated at the time of joining). Additionally the club will be introducing a six-monthly membership category (details of which will be available soon). This represents a major change but it is believed to be the right thing to do to recognise the changing demographics of bowlers on the coast with fewer people taking up permanent residency and a tendency to retain a home base in their country of origin and a winter home here in Spain.

Hope Powell's women's team will play New Zealand in the opening event of the Olympic Games at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 25th July. They will then face further group games against Cameroon and Brazil. The Team GB men's side will take on Senegal in their opening fixture, at Old Trafford on 26th July. Stuart Pearce's side also face United Arab Emirates and Uruguay in the group stage of the men's Olympic football competition. "Uruguay will be tough but I wouldn't dismiss anyone," said Pearce after the draw. "The addition of three overage players can contribute to a really strong side. It will be tough, tournament football always is. Everyone in the squad will have star quality but I'll pick the squad on merit”. Each team in the men's competition comprises 18 players, with 15 of them born after 1st January 1989. It means that Liverpool's Luis Suarez could play for Uruguay in the tournament.

Expensive taxi for Robbie Savage Robbie Savage makes what could be the most expensive bet of his life after promising to buy a new taxi for a cab driver if Newcastle finish in the top four this season. The bet was made at the beginning of the season, and on BBC Radio 5 live's 606 programme recently the cabbie rang in to remind Robbie of his bet.Colin Murray was also quick to tease him on Sunday night's Match of the Day 2. Savage could be left with a bill of over £30,000.

Carzola earns away point for Malaga at Osasuna In the pouring rain the game started slowly. Both sides were feeling each other out and Timor had a great chance to put Osasuna in front after 32 minutes but headed just wide. Malaga from then on began to impose themselves on the game as the first half progressed. Carzola on 34 minutes had a great chance, Monreal hit the post from the edge of the box on 40 minutes but it remained 0-0 at half time. Soon after the restart Maresca had a shot

from the edge of the box that missed. Then at the other end Karmeni saved well on 52 minutes for Malaga, but on the next attack Osasuna were in front, a great cross found Nino who headed home from just six yards.

Malaga made the breakthrough on 67 minutes, a good move led to Carzola collecting the ball to fire home from just outside the box. On 83 minutes Carzola had another chance for a winner but was deflected wide. On 86 minutes Camacho hit the bar from a header as Malaga continued to press for the winner, but it wasn’t to be. The next game is at home against Valencia on Sunday 29th April By Scott Forbes

Mobiles at e Open Spectators will be able to use mobile phones at the 2012 Open Championship after the game's governing body lifted its six-year ban on the devices. Calls will be allowed in designated areas, although photography and video recording will not be allowed during the four days of the championship. "There is no denying the attachment people feel to their mobile phones," said R&A chief executive Peter Dawson. "Allowing their use at the championship will enrich the Open experience."

Mobile phones were first banned for the 2007 Open at Carnoustie after players complained about the number in use at the previous Championship at Hoylake. Dawson added: "We understand there will be concerns over this change in policy but we will be liaising with spectators around the tented village and food and drink outlets. "Strict rules will be put in place designed to ensure that play is not affected in any way by the change.”

Jonathan Edwards in favour of 2nd chance for cheats Former Olympic triple jump champion Jonathan Edwards is happy the British Olympic Association's lifetime ban for drug cheats looks set to be overturned. The BOA expects to lose its legal fight against the World AntiDoping Association, which says drug-takers should instead receive a two-year ban. Edwards, who won gold in 2000, said: "Athletes should get a second chance. "[But] two years is simply not enough. The world needs to unite and introduce four-year bans." The BOA by-law which bans athletes found guilty of taking drugs from competing at future Olympics has been in place since 1992.

Lee Westwood successfully defended his Indonesian Masters title in Jakarta. The 38-year-old closed with a final round two-over-par 74 for a winning total of 16under-par 272. Thailand's Thaworn Wiratchant finished second after carding a 67, with Indian pair Gaganjeet Bhullar and Shiv Kapur two shots behind in third. "Hopefully this will kick-start my year. I've played well without any wins so hopefully I can go on and win other tournaments," said Westwood. The world number three had to complete a marathon 32 holes on Sunday after inclement weather caused the third round to be suspended on Saturday.
