WORLD Bigger and better!

By Kym Wickham k.wickham@thenewsonline.es

I haven't been in the office for a few days but everything seems to be running very well without me as, of course I knew it would. I am no more indispensable than anyone else and I have a brilliant team around me that will step in at a moment's notice if needs be. The paper is a day late this week due to the general strike that has hit us but, as you can see, you have bang up to date news on its impact. There was no point in putting The news on the streets because there were going to be potential difficulties for our stockists, but here it is today (Thursday) and better late than not at all. I am very pleased to tell you that we have had lots of calls and emails from people saying how much they like the new design and format of the paper. We have grown by over 70% from when we started - we now have 40 pages and distribute 25,000 copies every week from Malaga to Gibraltar and inland as far as Antequera. Somebody told me that they thought we only did 5,000 copies a week and only inland! Wherever this rumour came from, it is totally inaccurate, as the figures above show. We are growing and growing and making big inroads on the market. Our advertisers tell us they get the best results from the adverts in The news so, if you are running a business and want to join the successful businesses that advertise with us, then give us a call on 952 454 491.

Strike causes flights turmoil Spain's two biggest unions yesterday said that 72 per cent of workers joined the strike, including 65 per cent in the energy sector and 82 per cent in the air industry. The Spanish unions have turned against socialist prime minister Jose Luis Zapatero since he introduced the deepest budget cuts in three decades and made big changes to job security laws as the Government bids to pull the country out of recession and cut Europe's highest unemployment rate. The Government said yesterday it would not be pushed off course, but the prime minister added that he wanted to include the unions in negotiations on an overhaul of the pension system to be held by the end of the year. The battle of the figures between the government and the unions had begun by mid-morning Wednesday. The government insisted that

“everything was developing normally, without incidents” but did not give any figures while the unions said 70% of the work force had joined the strike. The most affected cities were Madrid and Barcelona and the regional capitals - with the exception of the Basque Country where even the unions admitted support had been no higher than 30%. Reports from small towns across the country were few but life in places like Coín was hardly affected, with very few shops closed. However, early reports from the coast indicated there was more support for the strike there. The centre of Malaga capital looked more like a Sunday, with the central market completely closed and little traffic on the streets. The strike was 100% effective in the mining, metallurgy and construction industries while pickets blocked transport in and out of the big food markets, effectively

WEATHER WEATHER

None of the newspapers appeared in print form because the strike for the printers started at 7 pm Tuesday until 7 pm Wednesday. However, their online versions gave minute-by-minute accounts of events, mainly in the big cities. TeleMadrid and CanalSur joined the strike while all the other TV channels reduced the length of their news bulletins by 20%, by agreement with the unions.

Valencia – where three picketers were injured a clash with the police – and Castilla-Leon. One woman picketer was seriously injured in Madrid after a distribution truck ran into a picket just after midnight on Tuesday, and another nine were injured when a picket clashed with police in Getafe around midday.

Many small stores risked opening and the big ones, like the Cortes Ingles in Madrid, had a barrier of policemen to protect them from the pickets. The unions complained of excessive use of force by the police in some regions, principally

The president of the Spanish Confederation of Businessmen, Gerardo Diaz Ferran, described the strike as “useless and harmful” for the country, which “all Spaniards” will pay for. He said the strike was only effective where the pickets

were active, adding that workers had shown they wanted to work and companies had opened to guarantee the right to work. The government estimates that the strike will cost €7,688 million, or 0.07% of the GNP.

Cabinet approves 2011 austerity budget The government approved an austerity budget at its Cabinet meeting last Friday which includes a tax rise for the rich and 8% spending cuts. The key provisions of the budget include: an overall spending cut of 7.7%, to €122 billion euros; departmental spending cuts of about 16%: a public sector pay cut of 5%, and a tax rise for personal income above €120,000 which is expected to raise between €170 billion and €200 billion.

Full details are to be presented for debate and approval in Parliament on Thursday. With most of the political parties against it, the government has won the support of the Basque Nationalist Party to ensure its successful passage through parliament in exchange for more

concessions over Basque regional autonomy. Spain has promised its European counterparts to cut its deficit to 6% of its gross domestic product (GDP) next year, from 11.1% last year. EU governments are all targeting maximum 3% deficits by 2013 in order to contain the continent's debt

crisis. Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero has already implemented labour market reforms that make it cheaper and easier to lay off workers in an attempt to reduce an unemployment rate of 20% - twice the EU average. The government raised its forecast for unemployment next year to

19.3%, from 18.9% previously. Whatever the outcome of Wednesday's general strike to protest against the labour reforms and spending cuts, polls suggest that most Spaniards are resigned to the difficult financial and economic constraints on what their government can do.

Spain joins missing child line Spain became the 12th EU country to adopt the 116 000 number for missing children last week, a service offered by the Fundacion Anar which represents the Missing

Children Europe Platform. Families with missing children can obtain psychological, social, technical and legal support through the number. Some 20,000 children are

reported missing in Spain every year. A spokesman for the Anar Foundation said most of them are runaways who eventually return home. He said only around 3%

actually disappeared. Posters are being placed in airports, police stations, Guardia Civil barracks, schools and post offices advertising the number.

Extremadura bans 'correbous'

Police keep up pressure on ETA despite latest offer Two days after the government rejected the latest offer by the Basque terrorist group ETA that it is ready to consider a permanent and verifiable ceasefire, police in the Basque Country arrested seven people belonging to Askapena, which handles the terrorist group's international relations. The offer was made by two ETA members on Sunday in an interview published in the Basque newspaper Gara, which the group uses to issue its communiqués. The men said that ETA was ready to "go one step further" and enter into a

dialogue on ending the conflict – if the right "conditions" were created. However, an Interior Ministry spokesman said that ETA's statements and interviews were "a waste of time" and that the government was waiting

for the group to "renounce violence permanently". Earlier this month, Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said ETA had broken too many ceasefires to be trusted. Meanwhile, ETA's political wing, the banned

Batasuna party held a meeting on Saturday in the sacred Basque town, Guernica, and called on the group to lay down its arms and choose the democratic way to gain its objective of independence from Spain.

Catalans feel unloved by the Spanish Catalan regional premier José Montilla has been warning for months that Catalonia is growing further apart from Spain but a recent survey

indicates that the Catalans love Spain more than Spain loves them. Only a quarter of Catalans believe the lack of love is on their side, while more than half feel it

is the Spanish who do not love them. The survey also showed that more than half would prefer Catalonia to continue forming part of Spain as it now is or with

Despite spending a hectic year dismantling the Franco regime, Suarez still had time to charm the ladies. “He really made you feel that he was enchanted to know you, Ms Lopez de Celis said during a TV interview. “We'd say ` he's got that look in his eyes whenever we saw him talking to a woman.” Despite his ladykiller air, Suarez was known to be totally devoted to his wife and children. Of the man who took over briefly after Suarez resigned, Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo, Lopez de Celis said he was

the modest intellectually prepared PM. Despite that, she said he broke the mould when it came to children: “There had always been children at the Palace, but Calvo Sotelo had eight. We had to prepare the attics on the third floor to fit them in.” Calvo Sotelo also took over a small room for his piano which, Lopez de Celis said, “He played very well, it was one of the few relaxations he allowed himself.” Spain's first Socialist prime minister after the dictatorship, Felip Gonzalez, was the most amenable and the least interested in fashion. Celis de Lopez likened his “look” to Curro Romero, a famous 19th century Andalucian bandido; “He was the despair of the Palace tailors. Everyone – the doormen, the kitchen staff, the secretaries, all called him by his first name, which he seemed to expect.” She said he was a

To attach the apparatus, the bull has to be roped by a group of men and tied to a post. It is not a tradition in Extremadura and the ban was seen as a response to the Catalan regional parliament's decision not

to ban the spectacle, which is common in that region, especially in the Ebro province. The Catalan parliament has already banned bullfighting as of January 1st next year on the grounds that it was cruel to the bull, but studiously avoided that issue during the debate on the carrebous. As a result, the decision was called hypocritical by 80% of Spaniards polled. It is widely believed that bullfighting was banned because it is Spain's national fiesta, and not out of sympathy for the bull.

Spain's PMs as seen by their secretaries María Angeles Lopez de Celis, who worked as a secretary for 32 years at La Moncloa Palace, the prime minister's official residence, has just published “Los presidentes en zapatillas” (The prime ministers in slippers) which gives an inside view of the country's PMs since the death of Franco, starting with Adolfo Suarez.

more decentralised powers. The other option would be becoming a state within a federal Spain. Only 17% opted for outright independence from Spain.

The Extremadura regional government last week banned the “correbous” – a village fiesta in which an iron apparatus holding two burning torches is attached to the horns of a bull before it is let loose to run round the town – and laid down stricter guidelines to protect the animals used in heifer and bull running.

Good location born leader, a “Pied Piper of Hamlin who could move the masses with his message – he didn't seduce, he hypnotised”. But of the limelight, he “was rather shy”. Of José María Aznar, she said his capacity for work and self-discipline inspired those around him to give their all. On the downside, Lopez de Celis said Aznar's main problem was his intransigence which gave the impression that he was “cold, calculating, enigmatic and implacable”. The current resident, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is “tranquil, and much better looking than he appears on TV – especially his eyes which are very blue and sincere”. He doesn't like braggarts or people who try to appear intellectually superior and people who try to lecture him irritate him enormously. He likes Russian salad, Supertramp is his favourite group, Barcelona is his team, and his favourite comic character is Tintin.

The Wine of St Martin's Day

Bruegel painting revealed by restorers Restorers at the Prado museum have revealed a previously unknownpaintingby16thcenturymasterPieterBruegeltheElder. Bruegel the Elder painted the work – The Wine of St Martin's Day, which shows about 100 peasant women and children, beggars, thieves and drunks all struggling to get some of the wine from the first barrel of the season – between 1565 and 1568. It is one of his biggest known works, measuring 148cm x 270.5cm. The owners of the painting did not know it could be a Bruegel until they began to try to sell it

last year. The Prado was asked to study the deteriorated work and earlier this month an X-ray revealed fragments of Bruegel the Elder's signature at the bottom of the painting. Before this find, there were just 40 signed Bruegels in existence. The Prado has just one other painting by Bruegel the Elder, entitled The Triumph of Death. The museum is now negotiating to buy the painting from its

owners at a price of up to €7 million but it could fetch up to €25 million if sold on the private market.

TVE2 went ahead on Tuesday afternoon and showed a documentary about Spain's coastline which touched on the subject of corruption in urban planning, despite an earlier request from the Environment ministry not to screen it. The documentary was the 12th in a series called Las riberas del mar océano (The banks of the ocean) made in collaboration with the ministry which signed an agreement with TVE in 2006 providing €1.292.874 to finance it. The TVE2 production team spent two years preparing 13 50minute programmes. After previewing the finished series last March, the ministry asked TVE to cut out part of the 12th progamme that referred to urban planning corruption.

More tourists, lower hotel rates Spanish hotels registered a 10% increase in overnight stays in August this year over the same month last year but rates were on average 1% lower, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). More than half the increase was due to the rise in the number of Spanish tourists, while a 4% increase in foreign tourists was the worst August figure in six years. Hotel rates have been dropping gradually for the past 21 months. MADRID

Ecologists form own party Ecologists from several NGOs have formed a political party in the hope of capturing 10% of the vote in the 2012 general election. The leader of Equo, as the party is called, is the former director of Greenpeace-Spain, Juan Lope de Uralde, and its members include a founder-member of Ecologists in Action, Santiago Martin Barajas, and the general secretary of WWF Spain, Juan Carlos del Olmo. Uralde said 3,000 people had already signed up on the party’s Facebook profile. MADRID

3,000 don’t belt up The Traffic Authority’s recent belt-up campaign caught in one week more than 2,000 drivers and nearly 800 passengers not wearing their seat belts. In the spot checks of nearly 277,000 vehicles, 191 minors under the age of 12 were not using the correct safety seats. According to the Authority, using the seat belt reduces the risk of death or serious injury by half and the number is even higher in the case of children not belted into the appropriate seats.

'Beginning of end' for FARC Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Monday hailed the death of top rebel Mono Jojoy along with 20 others as a "turning point" in the country’s fivedecade long battle against the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). He said the death of Jojoy, marked the "beginning of the end" for the rebels and urged them to demobilise or face a similar fate. Jojoy was killed in a large-scale military assault on his jungle stronghold in eastern Colombia last week. Mr Santos told the soldiers who had participated in the raid that he had ordered security

forces to intensify their pursuit of the rebels in the wake of the most recent success: "We are going to hunt them in the rivers, in the mountains, in the forests, in the swamps. There is no corner where we will not reach them". He added that information found on computers captured in the operation would allow the security forces to pursue "each and

Senator Cordoba helped negotiate the release of several FARC hostages two years ago, but the inspector general's office said there was clear evidence she had exceeded her role as a mediator by giving the rebels political advice. Inspector general, Alejandro Ordonez, said the evidence against Senator Cordoba came from files found on

Mr Ordonez also accused her of making public declarations aimed at "promoting and favouring" the rebel cause although he said her statements were not grounds for her to be prosecuted for treason, as some of her political opponents have demanded.

exam by stamping their feet loudly during the relevant sections. The office of the inspector general has recommended that those who directly cheated be disciplined and that there should be a wider investigation than the small sample they spoke to.

A Franca Austral whale (also known as Southern Right Whale)

Harassing wildlife is an offence which carries a maximum penalty of A$10,000 (US$9,600). A spokesman for the local Department of Environment and Conservation said the stunt was "foolhardy and reckless" because “if you are in the way of a tail slap or when the whale breaches you are unlikely to survive." Southern right whales can reach 18m in length and weigh up to 80

tonnes. The whales came close to shore to rest and to allow calves to gain strength in calm waters and under Western Australian laws, boats must stay at least 100m away from them while swimmers and surfers must be at a minimum distance of 30m. On Monday, wildlife officers were seen patrolling Albany's beaches to remind people to keep their distance from the whales.

Opposition hails election gains As Venezuela's opposition celebrates the results of Sunday's election, in which it overturned President Hugo Chavez's twothirds majority in parliament, Chavez himself during a four-hour-long speech on Monday said that it was an "important victory" for the country's socialist revolution. Near-complete results show that the Table for Democratic Unity (MUD) won 65 seats, with Mr Chavez's United Socialist Party (PSUV) gaining 98. The MUD has also claimed that it actually won an overall majority - 52% - of votes cast, but that changes to electoral districts and voting rules prevented that being translated into parliamentary seats. In any case, the PSUV will now be unable to pass major bills

unaided and the opposition will be capable of thwarting some of Mr Chavez's key socialist reforms.

of tight races. The opposition focused its election campaign on rising crime and rising inflation.

The results were only announced several hours after polls closed, despite an automated voting system supposed to supply results quickly - prompting the opposition to accuse electoral officials of stalling. But election officials - who said turnout was 66% - put the delay down to a number

Observers have said the vote could mark either the start of a new era of cooperation or the beginning of another period of bitter confrontation in Venezuelan politics. The election was seen as a test of Mr Chavez's popularity ahead of the presidential elections in 2012.

Sara Payne welcomes Sussex move The mother of Sarah Payne has welcomed the introduction of "Sarah's Law" in Sussex, the county where her daughter was murdered by a paedophile in 2000. Sussex Police has become one of more than 20 forces to introduce the Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme, which allows parents to ask police if someone who has contact with their child is a convicted paedophile. Police may also warn parents if concerns are raised by grandparents or neighbours. Eight-year-old Sarah was kidnapped and murdered by convicted sex offender Roy Whiting in West Sussex 10 years ago. He was jailed for life, with a 50-year tariff set by the then Home Secretary David Blunkett. A year-long trial of the

initiative began in September 2008 involving Cambridgeshire, Cleveland, Hampshire and Warwickshire police. Sussex is one of the first

forces to be part of the initial rollout. It is expected that every force in England and Wales will operate the scheme by the end of March.

A 250-year-old pistol, which was taken from the Stibbert Museum in Florence during World War II and kept on a wall in Flintshire for 66 years, has been returned. The family of Stanley Parry, from Holywell, said it was one of his dying wishes to have the gun sent back. Mr Parry saw action in north Africa and Italy with the Eighth Army, and during his return to the UK across the Channel he noticed another soldier trying to throw an ornatelydecorated pistol overboard. He stopped him and kept it himself as a memento.

The 18th century coral and silver gun had been taken from the museum in1944 when it was HQ to the British Army. Cristina Piacenti, the director of the museum, said she was delighted to accept the pistol back, after assistance by the British embassy: "It's a fairy tale with a happy ending, it's a lovely story." The pistol is back on display, with the story beside it.

A spokesman said that by last week the worm had infected about 30,000 iP addresses in iran.

Company fined for dead mouse in bread Premier Foods has been fined £5,500 and ordered to pay £11,109.47 by Oxford Crown Court after a man found a dead mouse in a loaf of bread. Stephen Forse, of Kidlington, Oxfordshire, had already used some slices for sandwiches for his children when he came across the mouse. He had bought the loaf online through a Tesco branch in Bicester in January 2009. In July, the company, which makes Hovis bread,

Branston pickle and Bisto gravy, admitted to having failed to maintain acceptable standards at its British Bakeries site in London. Mr Forse said he had noticed "a dark-coloured object embedded in the corner of three or four slices" and thought it was dough that had not been mixed

properly prior to baking". When he looked closer he saw that the object had fur on it. Mr Forse contacted Cherwell District Council and environmental health officers visited the family's home to collect evidence. During the visit one of

them identified it as a mouse minus its tail. A spokesman for Premier Foods said the company had stopped all bakery production at the site in London and appointed an independent specialist contractor to conduct a thorough investigation which had confirmed that it was an isolated incident, affecting a single product.

Cadiz Constitution commemoration kicks off King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were in San Fernando, Cadiz province, last week to commemorate the bicentenary of the first session of the Cortes (Parliament) which had transferred from Madrid after the capital was taken by Napoleon's forces during the Peninsular War. The whole area was under siege from February 1810 to August 1812. The French troops numbered 60,000 while only 2,000 Spanish troops defended the provincial capital. An Anglo-Spanish defence force made a disastrous landing at Fuengirola in October 1810. And while a second relief attempt at Tarifa in 1811 defeated a French force of some 15,000 to 20,000, the siege was not lifted until the Battle of Salamanca the following year, when the French troops abandoned Andalucia for fear of being cut off by the allied armies of Spain and Britain. It was against this background that the Cortes had its first session, and eventually produced the Liberal Constitution of Cadiz in 1812, one of the most enlightened documents of

its day , which established principles such as universal suffrage, national sovereignty and freedom of the press. It was the first time that the word “liberal” was used in a political sense. The King said it led to the creation of a “modern, united, diverse Spain characterised by solidarity”, which laid the foundations for the democracy the country enjoys today. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia then posed with men and women dressed in the costumes of that time to reproduce the scene which was captured in a painting. When Fernando VII returned from exile in 1814 he abolished the Cortes and had the Constitution annulled. Modern historians believe Spain's history would have been different had the Constitution stood.

Ad for female staff denounced

Save more than €1,300 a year A recent survey by the Consumers and Users Organisation (OCU) shows that shoppers can save more than €1,300 a year on average if they if they take their custom to Alcampo in La Cañada, Marbella; the Mercadona store in Calle Martinez Maldonado in Malaga capital; Carrefour in the Rosaleda shopping centre and the DIA in Calle Mirarrosas, both in Malaga capital. The most expensive places to shop are the Corte Ingles, Supercor and Hipercor, all in the capital. At a national level, the Mercadona stores were the cheapest in 25 of the 53 cities surveyed, while Alcampo was the cheapest in 17. OCU carried out the survey by visiting 971 establishments in 53 cities and consulting 12 supermarkets online.

The Junta de Andalucia’s work inspection department has ruled in favour of the workers commissions union which reported a company for advertising for female staff . Apparently the ad did not give any further details about the job and the union claimed that this was discrimination. It said the ad should have stated the reason why the staff had to be female. A union spokeswoman said the ruling was “good news because we have to continue changing things”. MIJAS

He pointed out that Mijas has one of the lowest IBI rates in the province, comparing it to Fuengirola where he said Mayor Esperanza Oña “punishes local businessmen with a 30% higher tax” which had resulted in many businesses closing down.

Martin Delfín Writes for the English language version of

Franco’s last executions

Cultivating grassroots

N

s the Sunday primary election approaches in Madrid, the biggest challenge facing Socialist voters in the capital has been the inability to spot the differences being offered by their party’s two candidates vying for the nomination to run for regional premier next year. Other than the fact that one is being officially supported by Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and the other contender is being pegged as a stalwart because he demanded his rightful claim to also run, Socialists really haven’t been provided with clues as to what these contenders are really offering madrileños. Political infighting aside, the real issues have been overlooked. It just boils down to a question of who is better suited to face the Popular Party’s incumbent Esperanza Aguirre next year: Madrid Socialist Party (PSM) leader Tomás Gómez or Health Minister Trinidad Jiménez. The polls, which had been heavily leaning toward Jiménez, in recent days have predicted a close race.

ational Court judge Fernando Andreu on Tuesday gave the goahead for several acts being planned in the Basque Country to honour two ETA members who were among Franco's last victims – executed by firing squad just weeks before he died. Juan Paredes Manot and Angel Otaegui were among the five men sentenced to death by Franco in September 1975. The other three were Jose Luis Sánchez Bravo, Jose Humberto Baena Alonso and Ramon García Sanz who belonged to the Maoist Frente Revolucionario Antifascista y Patriótico (FRAP).

F

RAP started operating in 1971 and reached its peak on May 1st 1974, when thousands of university students answered its call for a demonstration against the Franco dictatorship. It ended in a big battle in which one policeman was killed, around 20 people were wounded and 300 FRAP sympathisers were arrested. Hundreds more were arrested during the following months but matters came to a head when FRAP members assassinated a policeman on August 16th. Ten days later, the government passed the Antiterrorist Law, with a retrospective action.

O

n August 28th, a court martial in Burgos sentenced Otaegui and another member of ETA to death and another court martial in Barcelona sentenced Paredes Manot to death. The second ETA man in Burgos had his sentence commuted to life imprisonment. Meanwhile in Madrid two more courts martial were held at a military base near Madrid on September 11th and 17th, sentencing eight members of FRAP to death. Five had the sentences commuted to imprisonment but the other three, Sánchez Bravo, Baena Alonso and García Sanz, were shot on the morning of September 27th at the military base with 20 minute gaps between the executions. The men were not blindfolded – Sanchez Bravo was lucky, being the first one to die he did not witness the other two executions. Garcia Sanchez was the unluckiest, being forced to witness the first two executions. That same morning Paredes Manot was executed in Barcelona and Otaegui in Burgos.

F

ranco, angered by the wave of international protests, refused to commute the sentences as he had done in the case of the 1970 Burgos trial when six members of ETA accused of killing three people escaped the garrote – largely thanks to international protests and had their sentences commuted to life sentences.

B

ut in 1975, in what could almost be seen as his last stand, Franco ignored pleas for clemency from the Pope, the EEC countries, the United Nations, and the presidents of several South American countries. Sixteen European countries recalled their ambassadors.

A

F

ranco went into a coma a month later and died on November 20th. The executions were viewed as a blot on the copybook of a regime that had become increasingly less repressive in its final years, and revived the ugly memories of the regime’s first bloody years with a vengeance.

T

oday, despite all evidence to the contrary, some people still cling to the myths of the repression carried out during and after the Civil War. Many of these were backed by people like the writer Ramon Sender, who claimed that the Nationalists – as the Franco side was known during the Civil War - had executed 750,000 people between July 1936 and July 1938. Sender had fought on the Republic’s side as a Communist side and his claim should have been suspect, but many people swallowed it. In the first edition of his book The Spanish Civil War (published in 1961), British historian Hugh Thomas states that no estimate “even purporting to be accurate has been made in respect of Nationalist executions”. He notes that according to the Republican Madrid Council of Lawyers, in the first weeks of the war Franco’s troops had killed 9,000 workers in Seville, 2,000 on Zaragoza, 5,000 on Granada, 3,000 in Mallorca and 9,000 in Valladolid. However, Mr Thomas also notes that later research by the Basque historian Iturralde puts the figure for the number of Nationalist assassinations in Valladolid at around 1,600, less than a quarter of the number given by the Madrid lawyers, which casts doubt on all the other figures. By Mr Thomas’s well-researched calculations, the Nationalist “atrocities”, that is, people shot for ideological reasons outside the battle lines, were unlikely to have been more than 80,000. Another 25,000 or so died during the Nationalist bombings of Republican-held territory. Today, most responsible historians agree with him, as well as with his estimate that a similar or slightly lower number were killed by the Republicans for ideological reasons.

N

one of the deaths on either side can be excused or justified but perhaps it would help to put them into perspective if we remember Mao Zedong's 40 million victims; Stalin's 20 million in purges (not including WW2 deaths), and some 55 million who died in the war provoked by Hitler. Only Mussolini killed fewer people than Franco – 200,000 in Ethiopia and Libya, 15,000 in Yugoslavia, 9,000 in Greece and 250 Italians.

weaken him; although some pundits predict that if the PSM leader wins on Sunday he would be within easy grasp to wrest control of the national party leadership from the prime minister within the next two years.

W

hether Gómez wins or loses, he has already obtained the respect of those who believe that political parties in Spain have yet to make great strides to show a bit of transparency. A primary is the best way for people at the grassroots level to pick their own candidates, and not rely on a bunch of political power-brokers sitting behind closed doors, making their own lists of favourites.

ETA-FARC connection

J

iménez is being backed by Zapatero, who commanded Gómez to step aside and let her run. A former mayor of the Madrid town of Parla and with considerable backing, Gómez defied ZP and the rest of the national party’s hierarchy by insisting on running. The party wanted to avoid holding a primary because it feared it would only serve to divide Socialists in the capital. Gómez, who has gone down in history as the most voted for mayor since democracy was restored – not once, but twice did he obtain more than 70 percent of the popular vote – abandoned the confines of his town hall on the outskirts of the Spanish capital and headed off to the big city where he has been leader of the PSM since 2008. His goal had been clear from day one: he wanted to run against Aguirre in 2011.

B

ut early this summer, something happened, which hasn’t been all too clear. ZP called in his health minister, who had never given any public inkling that she wanted to run for elected office, and asked her to be the Madrid candidate. He was reportedly basing his decision on the results of internal polls that put her in fourth place among Socialists nationwide as the most influential, most liked party figure. (interior minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba obtained the highest score, with ZP nowhere in the top five slots). Sometime afterwards the prime minister called in Gómez for a secret meeting and asked him to give up his ambitions. Gómez refused and basically told the party leader, see you at the polls.

D

espite the behind-the-scenes bad blood that may be brewing within the Socialist ranks, both Gómez and Jiménez have made it clear that ZP is their leader and he should run again in 2012. Gómez has gone further, saying that this primary will strengthen ZP, not

E

TA was dealt another serious blow before dawn Tuesday when police in the Basque Country and Navarre made seven arrests of alleged members of the Askapena group, which is considered as the foreign propaganda branch of the Basque terrorist organisation. Police say they believe that Askapena had been the link between ETA and the notorious guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Some law enforcement authorities and experts have long suspected that ETA has been helping the FARC traffic Colombian cocaine in Western Europe. Last December, the US Drug Enforcement Administration announced that it had arrested three suspected Al Qaeda operatives in Ghana and brought them to the United States to face drug-trafficking charges. The DEA said that the suspects had offered to help FARC rebels traffic cocaine into Spain using North African routes. While no ETA connection was mentioned, Italian journalist and mafia specialist Roberto Saviano is convinced that ETA is working alongside the FARC. The author of Gomorrah, the 2006 account of organized crime in Naples, Saviano says that Italian investigators have evidence that shows the Basque group obtains part of its funding through the drug trade. In January, Spanish authorities acknowledged that ETA was involved with narcotics when they arrested five members during raids in Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa. Police confiscated 39 bags of cocaine and material typically used to cut the drug, as well as two pistols and some explosives. It will be interesting to see what comes out of the Askapena arrests.

Pat Brudenell I write in response to your correspondent’s letter re the new library in Alhaurin el Grande. I too visited the library soon after opening, but unlike your contributor, was thrilled at what I found. The design is amazing with lots of natural light and the children's section is bright and colourful and so welcoming. I am smiling at the prospect of an 'English Section!' Where would they start? Jamie Oliver v Nigella Lawson. Philippa Gregory v Catherine Cookson? I have a student who uses the library

Alhaurin el Grande every day along with her University friends - and they just love it. On the 4 occasions that I have visited, the place has been buzzing. It is preposterous to suggest that 'we English' are being treated as second class citizens. We have our main road through town, a commemorative square with fountains - and now a library all named after an Englishman! Might I respectfully suggest that your contributor gets on with their Spanish classes or alternatively visits the

charity shops to source books in English. When all that fails there is always Amazon. Don't know how long it is since they have visited the British Library suggest a little look at the website. No comparison. Editor says: yes, there is no doubt it's a grand building – mind you, card carrying British members of the original very small library were able to borrow English language books! And maybe there are some Spaniards learning English who would find them useful.

e tale of a comet ere is a brand new comet in the night sky, and if predictions are correct it should become visible to the naked eye by mid October. Comets have been described as ‘dirty snowballs’ because basically that is what they are, remnants from the early solar system that normally live way out in very deep space past the orbit of Pluto in an area known as the Oort cloud. Here many millions of comets orbit around the solar system just within the reaches of the Sun’s gravity. It is very cold and very dark out here and the comets only just manage to stay in place by the merest thread. Every now and then something will disturb this tenuous hold on a comet and it will begin to fall in towards the Sun. As it gets closer to the Sun then the Sun’s gravity and heat will begin to strengthen and have more of an effect on the dirty snowball comet. Comets can be huge things; Halley’s Comet is about 15km in size. Some comets crash into the Sun, others are thrown back around the Sun into deep space never to be seen again and some are sent into orbit around the Sun and may return in any number of years from a few years to many thousands of years.

sometimes, in minutes. People tend to go to Conor as a last resort, when everything else has failed. “It is a wonderful feeling to see someone who has given up all hope of ever being happy, suddenly discover that they can lead a normal life, that

they can be free of the pain… when they realize it doesn’t hurt anymore.” Conor practices at his home in El Palo. Visit his website and check out his case studies at www.conorcorderoy.me.uk

This particular Comet is known as Comet Hartley 2 named after the astronomer Malcolm Hartley who discovered it back in 1986. It orbits the Sun every 6.4 years and is about 1.5km in size. And during October it will come within 11 million miles to the Earth, which in space terms is really close!

As the comet gets closer to the Sun it begins to vaporise and produce the famous tail that comets are known for. This tail is made from billions of tiny fragments from the main body of the comet, some no bigger than dust particles. The tail stretches for many millions of miles into space and it is now that the comet becomes more visible. Interestingly, the tail of a comet always points away from the Sun no matter which way the comet is travelling, so after the comet has gone around the Sun and is heading back into space it travels tail first. Predicting comet brightness is very hit and miss as it can flare up suddenly or it can remain dim and out of sight during its pass around the Sun. But Comet Hartley is very well placed in the sky for northern observers and is predicted to get bright enough to be easily seen during October. If you go outside during October and can locate the ‘W’ shape of 5 stars that form Cassiopeia, then the comet will pass just below this constellation, and on October 9th it should be sitting right in the middle of the double star cluster in the constellation Perseus. This should make a very spectacular view with binoculars. I will keep you up to date throughout the month on the comet’s progress. Good luck and happy comet hunting!

1996.More than half of all dog bites come from familiar dogs, those of friends, neighbours and even the owner’s own dog. While some breeds may have more aggressive tendencies, all dogs are potential biters so don't be misled by size. However the Humane Society of the United States reports that in the period from 1979-1996, five breeds, the Pit Bull, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Husky and the Alaskan Malamute, were responsible for twothirds of fatal dog attacks and, in two years from 1980 to 1996, 304 people died from dog attacks. The American Veterinary Medical Association reports that dog attacks in the U.S. are the No. 1 public health problem for children, with more than half of all children bitten by age 12, most before the age of nine years. The leading reason for dog euthanasia is aggressive tendencies.

Fun dog show to raise cash for animal charities It's time to start encouraging your dog to start wagging his tail if he is to stand a chance of winning the waggiest tail class in the eagerly awaited ARCH/CHAIN annual fund raising dog show.

Often dogs lash out when reprimanded for doing something wrong. The dog does not know what it is doing wrong, it only knows you are being aggressive. Remember a dog should not be punished for anything more than three seconds afterwards, it just does not understand. Any punishment after that time can result in the dog fearing you and can often cause aggression. Smack a puppy which nips you and you will just teach it to nip and run. Shout 'ouch' and ignore it. Teach it that nipping is not rewarding by ignoring it. Biting by dogs is a serious problem as these statistics from America show. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, dog bites are responsible for 4.5 million injuries every year in the U.S.A., 750,000 people requiring medical attention and 334,000 ending in a hospital emergency room. The Insurance Information Institute reported that insurance companies paid an estimated $250 million in dog bite liability claims in

rescue dog and the entertaining agility course, as well as a host of others. Entry to the event is €2 – free for under 12s. Class entry costs €3 for adults and €1 for kids. There will be stalls to browse and the usual selection of hot food and drinks. For more information contact Jill on 656 935 613 or Denise on 630 197 435.

Dino was dumped just a few weeks ago near the SOS animal refuge. This charming dog is less than two years old and he currently shares a pen with two lively puppies and is very good natured with them.

He loves being with the volunteers and it is clear that he is an abandoned family pet. Dino has now been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and if you could give him a home, please call 605 227 155

Sun shines on Multicultural day Crowds thronged through Coin’s Alameda last Saturday for the 2nd Multicultural Day - and this year the sun shone non-stop. Young and old tucked into gastronomic delights from more than 20 countries - ranging from good ol’ “fish n’ chips” to Jamaican, Israeli and South African specialities. People wandered by the numerous stalls as the autumn sun beat down, stopping off to admire the work of local artisans, and to contribute to the charities who had a presence at the event.

Cars from Sol Classic Car club drew admiring glances and from midday to midnight there was plenty to entertain the audience as artistes representing countries from around the world took to the Bandstand in a rolling programme of dance, music and song to suit all tastes, including a TAPAS cabaret, line dancing from Shelagh “J”, plus many others.

Captain of Almeria

e duel

STARTING A NEW SERIES OF STORIES WRITTEN BY P TATE

T

he group of men moved across the sparse lawn slowly but with a purposeful gait. They walked towards a stand of coconut palms at the edge of the lawns that surrounded the large white Governor’s house. An early morning haze still lingered amidst the tops of the palms and the humid heat was a foretaste of the approaching Caribbean day. The men’s shoes crunched on the mixture of sand and shell as they came to a halt in a clear area amongst these palms. The fresh smell of the sea drifted up from the beach on the light breeze, helping to cut the smell of rotting vegetation. Two of the men removed heavy court coats - stylish perhaps, but far too thick for the Island’s climate. The shirts of both showed patches of sweat front and back. One man was young, slim and moved quickly though with an arrogant stiff manner as he accepted a sword, in an agitated movement from the man

acting as his second. This young man was Carlos Roberto Xavier, son of the Governor for the Spanish possessions in the Caribbean. With an exaggerated flourish he slashed the blade in front of him and glared at his opponent. This opponent stood calmly, ignoring the stare, as he accepted a sword with one hand and a glass of brandy with the other from his second. Older, with the tanned skin of a seaman, this was Captain Rodrigo Cortez Vivar of his Spanish Majesty’s ship the frigate Castille. As he took a sip of the brandy he raised the sword, looking along the edge of the rapier’s steel blue blade, judging its balance. Content, he smiled at his second, a young black male dressed finely in a blue velvet jacket with silver buttons, white cotton breeches and hose, finished with black patent leather shoes with silver buckles. ’The blade looks sharp, Nicholas,’ he said with an

affirming nod. ’Yes, Captain, I‘ve honed it so that you could shave with it,’ replied the black youth. ’Well, best we get on with the barber’s work,’ Rodrigo replied with another nod towards a man dressed in a white jacket with silver brocade. The copious amount of lace at neck and cuff showed that this was a man of fashion and wealth. He was in fact Count Alonso Miguel de Cordoba who, for some unknown indiscretion at the Spanish court, had been awarded the role of Deputy Governor of these distant Spanish possessions. He dabbed at his forehead with a lace- trimmed silk handkerchief as both seconds approached him to confirm their principals were ready. He listened to each with tilted head then nodded and beckoned the two duellists with a wave of both hands.

Carlos strutted forward and stabbed the blade of his rapier into the ground in front of him and began rolling up his sleeves.

‘Very well, as referee, it is my task to adjudicate. First, does one of you offer an apology?’ ‘Of course,’ said Rodrigo, ‘I apologise without reservation to this young man, my quarrel is with his father, not him.’

‘Sir!’ cautioned the Count, ’I must remind you of etiquette - a clean blade - for your opponent’s wounds!’

‘I refuse your apology!’ hissed Carlos, ‘you seduced my mother and shamed both her and my father!’

‘Hah!’ the young man laughed, glaring at Rodrigo, ‘my opponent won’t have to worry about his wounds when he is dead!’

‘Sir, your mother did not require seducing and she along with your father have shamed themselves with their own actions. Surely you can see this, give up this folly!’

The Count cleared his throat in discomfort at this outburst and raised a lacecuffed hand to dab at his face with the handkerchief as he looked towards Rodrigo.

‘Folly! I will show you folly!’ snapped Carlos as he pulled his rapier from the ground, adopting the engarde. ‘Hold!’ cried the Count levelling a large calibre, double barrelled pistol at the young man and then continuing in a quieter tone, ‘as I have said - I am adjudicator - I will have a duel - not a brawl! Is that understood?’

‘No bother,’ replied Rodrigo to the insult with a slight gesture of his brandy glass, ’a small matter.’ Rodrigo poured the remaining brandy on to the blade as he held the rapier pointing down and dried the blade with a couple of horizontal flicks.

Taking the waters... and calming the body and the mind If you have a few bob to spare then you can always head off to a five star hotel or a specially designed location like Champneys to luxuriate in the wonders of a spa weekend.

Written by Andrea MacLean

B

ut of course spas are nothing new and you don't have to go the glamour route to enjoy the therapeutic benefits.

T

he term spa is associated with water treatment, also known as balneotherapy and the belief in the curative powers of mineral waters goes back almost to the beginning of man's appearance on the earth. And although lovers of Jane Austen are well aware of the spa at Bath frequented by her heroines - the term came from the town of Spa in Belgium, whose name goes back to Roman times. In 16th century England the Roman ideas of medicinal bathing were introduced in places like Bath

although ancient legend credits early Celtic kings with the discovery of the hot springs here, and in 1571 William Slinsgby built an enclosed well in Harrogate, Yorkshire which became the first resort in England for actually drinking, as opposed to bathing in, medicinal waters.

T

he Greeks began the sort of bathing regimes that we see reflected in today's spas. The remains of the baths at the palace in Knossos, Crete, reveal an amazingly sophisticated system of bathing arrangements although of course the Romans had to go one better. What did the Romans ever do for us? Well, their aqueducts and

the invention of cement meant that they were able to build bigger and better and turn the Roman bath into a focal point for social and recreational activity.

A

nd of course, as the Roman empire spread they took the idea of the public bath into many regions of Europe and Africa. By the 17th century the aristocratic and upper class Europeans were a smelly lot, reckoning that washing the body was for lower class people only and the use of powders and scents became popular but then tastes changed and in 1702 Queen Anne travelled to Bath to bathe followed a short time later by Richard Nash, who helped transform Bath from a

country spa into the social capital of England and it set the tone for other spas in Europe as well as providing a very handy plot device for Jane Austen.

B

y the 19th century bathing became less a social promenade and more a generally accepted practice as doctors realized some of the benefits that cleanliness could bring. And here in Southern Spain one of the most famous old spas is the one found at Carratraca, near Ardales. The town grew because of the presence of the sulphurous waters, whose curative properties had been discovered by the Romans. In its 19th century heyday, when

"taking the waters" was at its most fashionable, Carratraca attracted famous visitors like Lord Byron and Empress Marie Eugenie, wife of Napolean III. A stunning 19th century building, beautifully preserved, houses the spa, and it is regarded as one of the most charming in Spain. To this day it is visited in large numbers by sufferers of a variety of ailments.

I

ts therapeutic benefits are said to cover circulation and skin problems and rheumatism, as well as gynaecological and orthopaedic troubles. There are jet showers, swimming pools and baths and a complete day's treatment costs in

the region of €120.

C

arratraca is known as the Diamond of Malaga and is regarded as a gateway to the Guadalhorce valley. There is plenty to admire in this town apart from the spa and it is well worth driving through the sweeping Andalucian countryside to pay a visit. And its location is perfect for those wanting to take in the while villages of Teba, Ardales and Alora as well as the El Chorro lakes. Once you have spent a few hours touring this splendid area you might well ant to take time out for a relaxing visit to the spa. The baths are open from June 15th to October 15th.

Steve Nelson back at Pógs Lots of familiar faces at Pógs this week, popular Shack-Attack front man Steve Nelson will be teaming up with Carl Morgan for his second gig in ages at Pógs this Sunday Oct 3rd. Sadly the Shack–Attack band are no longer playing together, in any one recognizable form that is but it’s hard to keep a good rock band down for long so who knows. Carl and Steve will be putting together an all time classic mix of ballads and rocks songs, playing from 10 pm on, every other Sunday. Another gifted duo this week, (probably tonight, Thursday as the majority of

businesses were closed yesterday due the strike) is Chicago Jim with Mandolin Mick. These two talented musicians have been on the coast for some time and create a healthy if unusual blend of Motown Soul and Celtic Classics when together, a sort of Golden Irish if you will. And finally blowing out all the cobwebs and putting their stamp on the weekend – Roadhouse, a classic rock

blues band for Friday night. Then mellowing slightly for Saturday, Sham~rock with Amelinda up front performing their version of hits from the 70s to present day. All in all a good week for live music fans at Pógs, with loyal proven local musicians who can always be relied upon to keep the music live and kicking on the Costa del Sol. Tel 662 594 111.

Christmas is coming... ... and kids and parents alike are waiting for the return to the silver screen of two fantastic franchises in the shape of Harry Potter and the Tales of Narnia. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the seventh and final part in the adventures of the boy wizard and his friends as they search for the horcruxes and battle the evil Voldemort. The book was far too complex to condense into one movie and has been split into two. Part 1 will be released worldwide on November 19th and while

it's a bit of a stretch to call it a Christmas movie it will no doubt stick like glue to cinema screens for several weeks. The split should allow director David Yates all the time he needs to do the book full justice on the big screen and the special effects are expected to be y spectacular. Actors in the supporting roles, like Julie Walters' Mrs Weasley, must have been rubbing their hands with glee because there are huge action highlights for everyone - clear from last week s worldwide premiere of the trailer. It's going to be a corker - and leave everyone on a knife edge for Part 2, coming next July. The latest in the Narnia franchise is planned for a worldwide December 10th release date and was nearly dead in the water. Disney took fright at the costs of producing the first two and pulled out of the franchise

due to "budgeting and logistical concerns". So audiences who had thrilled to the Pevensie family finding their way through the wardrobe into the bewitched world of Narnia, where they met a rich array of characters like Mr Tumnus and Prince Caspian, and battled to save Aslan, were left dangling. But Fox 2000 and Walden Media stepped in to rescue the franchise. In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Peter and Susan Pevensie are too old to return to Narnia and the baton is passed to Lucy, Edmund and their cousin Eustace, who join Prince Caspian on the royal ship The Dawn Treader as they head towards the edge of the world. Ben Barnes returns as Caspian and there's a part too for Bill Nighy. The movie will be directed by Michael Apted and he has been signed up for the fourth in the series, The Silver Chair.

Affleck's first job as director was the muchlauded Gone Baby Gone, and in his second directorial outing he has shown that he has what it takes to draw in his audience.

Woody's stellar cast in Coin Woody Allen's latest comedy drama "You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger" brings together a stellar cast and you can catch it next week in English at La Trocha, Coin. Performances are: Mon Oct 4th at 6.05pm; Wed Oct 6th at 8.15pm and Thur Oct 7th at 8.10pm. Anthony Hopkins plays Alfie, who, faced with thoughts of mortality, decides to make one last throw of the romantic dice by dumping wife Helena (the fantastic Gemma Jones). His daughter and son-in. law, played by Naomi Watts and Josh Brolin, are having their own ups-and-downs and in the mix we find handsome art gallery owner Antonio Banderas and hot young actress Freida Pinto (Slumdog...). Helena falls under the spell of an unscrupulous fortune teller - hence the title of the movie. Hopkins handles his role beautifully and is ably assisted by an excellent cast.

A

s I heard Blockbuster have recently filed for bankruptcy in the U.S., I was reminded of when I was fifteen, going on sixteen and my parents bought the family’s first video recorder. Among the first films that we watched then in late 1981 and early 1982 were films that were to become movie classics, such as E.T., Chariots of Fire, The Elephant Man, First Blood (Rambo) and Ghandi.

S

ome of the films I have not seen since. I can’t remember ever watching Sylvester Stallone’s First Blood from that time to this, even though Rambo as a character has become firmly embedded in in our cultural psyche, nor have I sat through On Golden Pond which bored me but which my mum loved, and which scooped no less than ten Oscars - in the last (nearly) thirty years.

C

hariots of Fire became better known for its haunting theme music than for the story it actually told, that of runners in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Vangelis’ Chariots of Fire music became the de facto soundtrack for anyone in a slow-motion race of any kind and has become so parodied that even people who have never seen the film will know that the music signifies winning, glory and triumph.

I

have watched E.T. quite recently and I was surprised at how good the whole thing looks. Yes, the clothes, cars and settings place this film firmly in its time zone but the film still appears fresh and the actors are so convincing that you are immediately drawn into the world of Elliot, his sister and the alien that touches their hearts. Apparently the film’s director Steven

Spielberg shot the film in chronological order so that the younger actors could develop their emotions towards the ugly alien before the final teary conclusion. Apart from making grown men cry, the film is famous for having launched the career of Drew Barrymore who went from celebrated child actress to troubled teen, suffering periods of drug addiction and depression before finding her feet again as one of Hollywood’s most successful comedy actresses.

T

he video recorder also gave me the opportunity to watch films that I wouldn’t have been allowed to see at the cinema. Although we were sometimes allowed to slip into an 18 certificate horror film at the Fleapit as our local cinema was known, the video recorder allowed me and my friends to watch such dodgy slasher movies like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Driller Killer.

I

do remember one Sunday afternoon telling my best friend’s mother that we were off to my house to watch the latest big movie, The French Lieutenant's Woman when in actual fact we had managed to get hold of a hooky copy of Monty Python’s The Life Of Brian. My friend’s ultra-religious parents had already banned her from watching the film on the basis that it parodied the life of Christ and they believed it to be antiChristian. Although we had worked out our story in advance of going to watch the video, we forgot to do our research so became unstuck when her mum sat us down the next day to ask us all about The French Lieutenant's Woman, a film that neither of us had seen or knew anything about!

The intensity of the past few weeks continues and love is centre to your game plan. Someone has definitely got your attention and you are intent on making in-roads into this association. Flattery and seductive words will be coming your way and it is important not to be bowled over by compliments - someone may be saying what they think you want to hear. Take your time to think things through even though you may be enamoured by this magnetism. Don’t let feelings cloud your path. There is something in the air that is worth pursuing. Even though at times you feel pushed to the end of your tether, there is a solid and consistent path ahead. In time all will be revealed. On a personal note your love life is going from strength to strength and temperatures are rising – you will be developing an intimate relationship that is starting to blossom. This is an ideal time for networking and getting out and about socially – fun is in the air. There has been a relaxing of the daily hectic schedule that you have been operating under, leaving more time and space to concentrate on what needs doing in your life. This is your time to plan things, do the things that you would like to do, make time for yourself and finally catch up on what you have let slip. The energy that is about is all for you, so use this time to cash in on opportunities that will enable you to build up your wealth pile. Structure and commitments are becoming more integrated into your daily life; you will find that you have offers of material security coming your way. This is a time of balance and integration where everything is settling down, allowing you to firmly put the control of your life back in your own hands. You will find out who you can trust over the next few weeks as key players reveal their hands. Even though others around you are struggling you can see the light at the end of your own tunnel. Duty and responsibility are taken lightly on your shoulders at the moment and it all seems second nature to you as you rule the roost with ease and agility. Something that seemed daunting a few months ago is proving to be easier than you originally thought. If you have been sending mixed messages to someone this is the time to make it clear and convey what you really think and feel - they have been waiting in the wings for a while. You are finding that you have some key decisions to make in your life as to how you want your future to pan out. Issues to do with trust and loyalty may play a major part in structuring your plans. Career choices and educational opportunities gravitate towards you; perhaps you have excelled in a particular area and are going to be offered some sort of advancement. Your prospects are looking bountiful and full of promise.

Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the milk. Pour batter over caramel and fruit in pan. ● Bake in the preheated oven for 90 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto serving platter and carefully remove pan. Be extremely careful of hot caramel and fruit juices! Serve warm.

Each thing has its own time and seasons; this is your time to put in some hard work to reap the rewards that you long for. Something has caught your eye and there is nothing that you won’t do in order to get this thing under your belt. You are longing to experience more of what life has to offer, perhaps you feel as though you have missed out in a particular area. Your emotions are at an all-time sensitive high right now and you could find that you are feeling so good one minute and yet so bad the next and the swing could be wearing you down. The gulf between your fears and reality is causing the imbalance to occur. Make sure you take some time to find your own centre, allowing yourself the space and time for reflective contemplation so that you are able to figure it all out.

Often when we find ourselves doing things that we would rather run away from we discover pleasure and satisfaction. It is sometimes our thinking that stops us from achieving and doing what needs to be done to make our own lives more satisfying. There is a lot of fun to be had out there right now and social activities, contacts and romance are on the cards. So if there is one thing that you have been putting off it may be worth the while to tackle it first.

This is a time to deal with your inner feelings, to get your own house right and as you clear the clutter all around you and create order, so does your internal equilibrium restore itself. Family issues and problems with minors are likely to arise for you to deal with so make sure that you deal with solid facts and try not to be emotionally swayed and take sides. Your romantic life moves up a notch and passion takes over – by the weekend you will be having hot moments.

SPANISH

This week we're going to learn how to say where things are. The main words you will need are : en - in or on sobre - on debajo de - under detrás de - behind delante de - in front of encima de - on top of al lado de - next to or beside If someone has, for example, lost the key they may say ¿Dónde está la llave? Where is the key? If it's on the table you can say Está encima de la mesa or Está sobre la mesa or even Está en la mesa Don't you just love the fact that even the simplest of statements has endless possible ways of being expressed? Well, it doesn't exactly simplify the learning process but that's just the way it is. If the elusive key is under the chair you say Está debajo de la silla. It's behind the curtain – Está detrás de la cortina It's in front of the window – Está delante de la ventana It's next to the door – Está al lado de la puerta If it's inside something you use dentro de La llave está dentro de la caja The key is inside the box One little point to notice. The Spanish for opposite is Enfrente de. Another of those false friends which set out to confuse us but with practice all things are possible. Call for diabetes drug to be suspended

Beauty Tip

Vices that are good for you

European regulators have called for the widely-used diabetes drug, Avandia, to be pulled from the market. The drug is used to control blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients. It was licensed 10 years ago and more than 100,000 patients in the UK use it despite on-going concerns linking it to heart problems. However, after looking at the safety data, the

European Medicines Agency concluded that the benefits no longer outweighed the risks. The drug is also used in combination with other drugs under the names Avandamet and Avaglim. A

spokesman for the agency said patients who are taking these medicines should discuss suitable alternative treatments with their doctor, but advised them not to stop their treatment before doing so. A spokesman for

COFFEE Coffee's energy-boosting caffeine has nothing on its real health superpowers. Studies show that coffee may minimize your risk for Parkinson's disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Most chronic diseases are related to inflammation, and coffee is chock-full of antiinflammatory compounds. Hollywood heads to Spain

Paramount - the movie company behind Shrek, Indiana Jones, Star Trek and Mission Impossible - has confirmed plans play a part in a major theme park here in Spain. A small fishing village on the north coast of Spain has become a tourist attraction and it's all due to Martin Clunes. Well, not quite because it's most unlikely that actor Clunes will have ever visited Lastres, a fishing village in Asturias. Gamers shun stores for downloads US sales of PC games via downloads have exceeded shop sales for the first time, suggest figures. In the first six months of 2010, 11.2 million full games for the PC were bought online compared to 8.2 million physical unit sales, said NPD Group.

Despite the prevalence of downloads, physical sales generated more cash.

Topping the list of download sites was Steam, the online shop of game developer Valve which

NPD said that PC sales in shops made up 57% of all cash spent on PC games compared to 43% for

created Half-Life, Left 4 Dead and many others.

downloads. NPD said this was due to the higher average price of games sold in stores. The figures also revealed that the total sales of downloads and in-shop sales were down 21% on the same period in 2009.

Google has won a landmark ruling against Spanish broadcaster Telecinco, with a Madrid court rejecting the claim that the US search giant should be held responsible for copyrighted material posted to its YouTube video sharing website. Google hailed the case as a big win for the internet. The court threw out Telecinco's case, filed in June 2008, and ordered the broadcaster to pay Google's court costs. Telecinco had claimed YouTube was damaging its business by airing TV shows before they had been broadcast in Spain, arguing that Google "profits from the exploitation of intellectual property rights".

In the ruling against the broadcaster, the Spanish court said it was the responsibility of the copyright owner to identify and tell Google when material that infringes intellectual property is on YouTube, noting that the site has tools allowing this to happen. A Google spokesman said: "We are very pleased with today's ruling. The win today confirms what we have said throughout this process: YouTube complies with the law. The ruling recognises that YouTube is merely an intermediary content-hosting service and therefore cannot be obliged to pre-screen videos before they are uploaded."

The head of Nokia's smartphone division has taken a parting shot at Google's Android OS, a few weeks before he is supposed to leave the company. Anssi Vanjoki, the current head of Nokia's dwindling smartphone business line, compared mobile phone manufacturers using the Android OS to 'Finnish boys who pee their pants for warmth in the winter'. Vanjoki added that phone makers using Android instead of developing their own software, were only hurting themselves, as in the long run, consumers would start buying smartphone because of the OS and not the hardware. Cell phone makers like HTC, Motorola and Samsung have benefited from using Google's mobile operating system, launching an onslaught of Android powered smartphone devices in the market one after the other. HTC's Desire, Hero and Legend are some of the most popular Android smartphones on the market and so is Motorola's Droid line. Samsung is riding high on the success of its Androidbased Galaxy S smartphone and is on the verge of launching an Android tablet device as well.

Another Ferrari making the news Ferrari finally let us have a peek at its most exclusive car ever, the 599 SA Aperta roadster, ahead of its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show next week. Limited to just 80 builds - all of which have already been sold .The SA Aperta is fitted with the 6.0-litre V12 powerplant from the 599 GTO, outputting 661bhp.

Alonso holds off a resurgent Vettel to win again Credit must go to Alonso for raising his game as he again puts in another outstanding drive.

but the Spaniard used his hard learned skills to maximum effect and for the second time in two weeks he managed maximum points. Alonso’s delight was there for all to see as he climbed the top step of the podium to celebrate his 25th Grand Prix

win and his second victory in Singapore. He reflected in the press conference later: “Obviously it was tough. The race was long and with the safety car problems and also the people we were lapping, especially at the end we

found a group of five cars and it was difficult to lap them. There was a yellow flag on the straight. We had to manage the gap not to overtake the guys under the yellow. I took it very easy in the last couple of laps, we know how difficult it is to overtake here.” Vettel’s inability to take pole position when it was his for the taking, the day before, cost him the victory. Without doubt from the front row he would have probably cruised to a comfortable win. Nevertheless full marks too for his gritty pursuit of Alonso, a two times world champion, who never made a single mistake during the course of the 61 laps.

Classics picnic in the pines This month members of the SOL Classic car Club joined forces with enthusiasts from the Club de Clasicos Campo de Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Classic Vehicles Association for a multinational drive through the verdant Guadiaro valley ending with a picnic in the pine forest Pinar del Rey. The drive took the group from the starting point at Laguna Village, along the coast road to Torreguadiaro. They then headed inland to the sleepy town of San Martin de Tesorillo, where they headed west towards Castellar. A short detour took them up to the old village of Castellar de la Frontera, with its splendid medieval castle perched high on a hilltop with stunning views over the beautiful Guadarranque reservoir. The history of the village goes back to prehistoric times and the Bronze Age, after which the place became a medieval fortress. There is evidence of human occupation in prehistoric eras in the many caves around the area, with their wonderful cave drawings. It also

After the launch of MINI’s largest ever vehicle, the Countryman, the firm is showing its smallest at the Paris Motor Show. Called the MINI E Scooter Concept, the bike features scaled down versions of all the classic MINI design cues, including the large iconic speedometer, oval wing mirrors and squared off rear lights. The use of chrome and other materials is also designed

Webber, who started from fifth, but managed to get the drop on the two McLarens thanks to an early pitstop during the first safety car period, took the final podium position and continues to lead the championship, now by 11 points from Alonso. It was another DNF for Lewis Hamilton, who before Monza was leading the title chase, but since then has given away 50 points to Alonso. Hamilton was once again victim of his own exuberance as he had a go at Mark Webber after the restart following the second safety car period.

played an important role in the wars between the Spanish and the Muslims because its elevation provided an advantageous strategic position.

From the Castle the group descended towards San Roque, heading into the Pinar del Rey for their picnic. This is a beautiful, shaded area in the middle of a nature reserve in a 338 hectare pine forest, which was originally planted in 1800 when the powerful Spanish Navy planted pine trees here to supply timber to make warships. It has a much more peaceful purpose now and is a perfect spot for a relaxing picnic with tables set in the sun dappled area beneath the trees. This is such a perfect spot for a picnic and one the club will undoubtedly visit again.

Vettel said afterwards: “The final two laps were the only chance I had, but with the old tyres the car was sliding all over the place. It was difficult. During the pit stop I made a little mistake. If I hadn’t then I think it would have been close. I tried to push him into a mistake, but he didn’t make one. So it was difficult to overtake and it would have been too risky. “In the end we go away with second place. The car was quick, competitive and we made good progress today. In the end it is good to get points for the team and it helps us in the constructers’ championship and me in the drivers’ championship.” Vettel’s team mate Mark

to make the scooter instantly recognisable as a part of the MINI family.

Two weeks after his superb victory at Monza, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso secured another lights to flag victory at the Singapore Grand Prix at the floodlit Marina Bay Circuit. The Ferrari driver tapped into his vast experience to take his second win on the trot and further enhance his F1 World Championship ambitions. Alonso managed to hold off Sebastian Vettel who pursued the Spaniard relentlessly until the very end but to no avail as the German crossed the line runner-up less than a second behind the scarlet Ferrari. England team arrive at village England's first batch of athletes moved into the much-criticised Commonwealth Games village on Monday after receiving the all-clear by team chiefs in Delhi. The 48 competitors from the hockey, lawn bowls and shooting squads had been staying in hotels over the weekend. With 36 other members arriving on Tuesday, England chef de mission Craig Hunter said: "It's not perfect but the accommodation is acceptable."

Malaga continue fine away form...

Autumn bowls just around the corner

After losing to Sevilla, Malaga came to Getafe's ground where they had only managed to win once before.

The summer championships have just finished at Benalmadena bringing to an end a a very good and well attended competition. Mijas had two winners from their club. Joe Stamper made his mark by winning the final singles against Jim Neilson of Benalmadena.

Malaga began brightly, Fernando going close after only one minute. New signing Ruben was making his debut in goal following an injury to Galatto and made the first of several good saves after only 6 minutes. But it was Malaga who got the first clear chance, after a good run by Mtliga created an opening for Apono, whose shot from the edge of the box was blocked on the line by a Getafe defender. Rondon was unlucky to have a goal ruled out for offside and then on 40 minutes he was was put through by a Quincy run and pass, but his shot was well saved by Getafe's keeper Codina. Malaga opened the scoring in the 54th minute, Rondon breaking through the Getafe defence and running into the box to slot

his shot home. Two minutes later Ruben saved well again to keep Getafe out. In the 60th minute Malaga's Eliseu broke down the right and his looping shot went over the keeper and hit the post, he collected the rebound only to be brought down in the box by Getafe defender Rafa, resulting in a penalty, Rafa was sent off for the foul after collecting his second yellow card. Apono stepped up to take the penalty and smashed the ball home to make it 2-0. Malaga's Jesus Gamez was sent off for receiving his second yellow card. Getafe huffed and puffed trying to create chances but with Ruben making several good saves Malaga never really looked in trouble and gained another good away win, which leaves them 8th in the table.

...but home form still a worry! Malaga 2 - 3 Villarreal Malaga, looking for their first home win since beating Villarreal 2-0 in March of last season, started well with Eliseu smashing home a free kick in the 4th minute leaving goalkeeper Lopez rooted to the spot. The visitors were back on terms 16 minutes later, though, thanks to Cazorla, whose shot from the corner of the box took a deflection off Malaga midfielder Antonio Apono before beating Ruben Martinez at his near post. Three minutes later Villarreal were in front following a fine goal from Rossi. Nilmar played in the Italian international, who took the ball in his stride before rolling his shot past Ruben and just inside the far post. The end-to-end contest produced another goal in the 29th minute when Malaga made it 2-2 through

Rondon, who had the easy task of heading in from six yards out following great work down the left by Quincy. In the 33rd minute Villarreal were back in front, Cazorla nettting from just outside the box in what was a pulsating first half. Just before half time Eliseu was red carded after Marchena went down following a touch of heads and he fell to the ground in dramatic style. With Malaga down to 10 men it left a mountain to climb but in the second half they played with good passion and spirit but never really created any clear cut chances. At the end of the match though the loyal crowd gave a good ovation to the team. They now travel to Almeria on Sunday hoping to continue their good away form. By Scott Forbes

Costa Del Sol Summer Bowls Championships The Costa Del Sol Summer Championships started off with the singles, with some fantastic matches. In the final in one of the best matches of the competition Margaret Kain lead 10 – 7, and Kate Morris came back to lead 12 – 10. At the 23rd end Margaret Kain lead 17 – 14. But from then on Kate won the last 5 ends to win 21 – 17.

He is understood to have been found hanged at a house in Orrell, on Sunday afternoon.

The Men’s was the biggest entry and the semi finals saw Joe Stamper winning 21 – 4 against Garry Aldridge, and Jim Neilson winning a close match against Davie Hunter. The final was very close in the early stages with a score of 7 – 7. But Joe steadily drew away to win 21 – 7 to win the Championship.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said:

The Pairs Competition was very closely fought and

So to the final of the Rinks, and Frank Ball’s Lauro team started well to lead 14 – 6 after 8 ends. But the Mijas team never lost another end, Kevin Bloe, Don Smith, John Warn and Doris Mellor winning 21 – 14.

Grahame McDowell: Colin has put the fight back in us lifestyle is being brought into question by the media. Preparations are under way for the Ryder Cup being held at Celtic Manor in Wales this Friday. European Ryder Cup vice-captain Thomas Bjorn said in a recent interview that he has been impressed by team Captain Colin Montgomerie's attention to detail ahead of this week's match. Bjorn has had something of a frosty relationship with Montgomerie in the past but it appears to be long forgotten as they prepare for the competition at Celtic Manor this Friday. "Monty's just thought of everything, and everything there is to know about everybody he knows," said Dane, Bjorn. "He's a great inspiration when it comes to team golf." Montgomerie has played in eight Ryder Cups but takes charge for the first time in Wales this Friday. The 47year-old Scot has never lost in a Ryder Cup singles match and has a total points tally of 23.5, just 1.5 points short of Sir Nick Faldo. He said the man-management of his players will provide the biggest test at this week's Ryder Cup. Padraig Harrington, one of Monty's

The 39-year-old Irishman, only made the cut by one shot and was last after five holes of round three. But he had seven birdies and an eagle three at the long 13th on Sunday to finish joint eighth on 13 under par. But it was not so good news for another member of the European team, Peter Hanson, after he withdrew from the tournament because of a chest infection. Fingers crossed Hanson will make a speedy recovery in time for Friday. With much excitement and tension

building up in Europe and the United States, all eyes will be on Celtic Manor in Wales from the 1st – 3rd October to see who will be receiving that familar and all important, golden Ryder Cup trophy, topped with the figure of a golfer. For those who didn’t know, the figure surprisingly, is not of Samuel Ryder himself, but rather Abe Mitchell, the pro who taught Ryder the game. More than a friendship, the two forged a brotherhood and that is what the Ryder Cup has become all about. The United States vs Europe. Such a great competition, may the best team win! Poulter needs his tweets Ian Poulter insists European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has not banned his players from using Twitter during the tournament at Celtic Manor this week. Montgomerie said on Monday that the recent controversy involving England cricket star Kevin Pietersen had prompted him to ask players to refrain from using the social networking site, a move also made by opposite number Corey Pavin.

Can ‘Cav’ win the Worlds Britain has a chance this weekend of having a new World Road Race Champion, in the guise of Mark Cavendish, but with few team-mates to help him he will still need lady luck to lend a hand. Sunday's race from Melbourne to Geelong is a long 262km, ending with 11 laps of a 15.8km circuit when they get to Geelong.

Cavendish is in probably the best shape possible following great successes in both the Tour de France and La Vuelta in Spain, winning the green points jersey and sprinting as well as he has all year to win three stages. So can he become the first Briton since Tom Simpson in 1965 to win this

event? It will be tough with only two team mates to help him, David Miller and Jeremy Hunt, courtesy of Britains lower world ranking. The top teams will have nine riders, which makes it much easier to follow and respond to any breakaways. But Cavendish is rightly considered to be one of the favourites for the ‘Rainbow Jersey’.

France’s former captain said he was flattered by the approach but decided to remain loyal to the French club.
