SYP writeS to familieS about knife crime
South Yorkshire Police’s Chief Constable has written to 16,000 11 and 12-year-olds and their families about knife crime, to reassure them about the scale of the problem in schools, what they are doing to prevent it, what families can do to help, and how the Police respond to reports. The letters will be sent alongside a leaflet, which advises parents and carers how to approach a conversation with their child about knife crime, and a comic book, which tells a story based on real-life events in South Yorkshire - highlighting the potential consequences
of carrying a knife. Neighbourhood officers will deliver the letters, leaflets, and comic books to all secondary schools in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield, with a request they are sent home with 11 and 12-year-olds during the coming weeks. Knife crime in schools is extremely rare. In recent years, less than two per cent of all knife- related crimes in South Yorkshire have happened in schools. Most of these relate to carrying a knife, not to one being used to threaten or cause harm. However, in understanding of the
communities’ concerns about knife crime, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and the Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) awarded further funding to extend the Knives Take Lives campaign. The campaign was launched in January 2025 to educate young people about the consequences of carrying a knife. It was developed in consultation with Learn Sheffield, education and community representatives, and young people. In her letter, Chief Constable Lauren Poultney said:
“Preventing knife crime is a priority for schools, local authorities, and the police. We all want to keep our children and young people safe. We regularly speak to young people across South Yorkshire to understand why they may carry a knife, and to educate them about the potential consequences of doing this.
“When knife crime is reported to South Yorkshire Police, we take the most appropriate course of action based on lots of information. Sometimes this is talking to a young person and helping them to access the right support, sometimes this involves

arresting them. If we find a weapon, we will always seize it.
“Most people who carry a knife never plan to use it - only carrying it because they mistakenly think it will protect them and their friends or that it will increase their social status. Together we need to change that mindset. We all have a role in preventing knife crime and yours could be as simple as a conversation.”

dsa airport will re-open
South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard and Council Leaders have taken a historic decision to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport, approving a £160m (£159.52m) funding package that will see commercial flights return to the region. The decision was made at a meeting of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority Board, held on Tuesday 9 September. All five board members voted unanimously in favour of the funding, paving the way for the airport’s reopening. The approved funding is on top of the £16m already committed previously by the Board.
The decision was taken by the Board made up of South Yorkshire’s Mayor, the Leader of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council Sir Steve Houghton, Mayor of City of Doncaster Council Ros Jones, Leader of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council Chris Read and Leader of Sheffield City Council Tom Hunt. Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed in November 2022, leaving South Yorkshire one of the largest UK city regions without an international aviation presence. Since it closed, the Mayors, along with local authority partners and central government have worked at pace to explore the opportunity to return aviation to the region through a reopened airport with a viable future. Oliver Coppard, said: “We’re reopening DSA. Today, we’ve made a historic decision; to invest in the plans to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport, and to create a sustainable aviation and advanced manufacturing hub at Gateway East. I’ve always said I wanted to reopen DSA, but we needed to know exactly what the plan looked like. That’s why we’ve taken the time and done the work. No plan of this size or scale is ever easy, or without risks, but today we’ve taken a bold step forward, backed by data, expertise, and a shared vision for the type of South Yorkshire we want to build, because DSA is a unique opportunity. The plan we have backed today is about more than holiday flights or passenger numbers, it’s a long-term commitment to drive jobs, growth and opportunities in sustainable aviation,

advanced manufacturing, freight, and even the defence sector, here in South Yorkshire.”
Mayor of City of Doncaster Council Ros Jones, said: “This is an important day in our airport’s story. Today we have taken a huge step forward towards fully reopening our airport.
Over the last three years this airport has been the number one question on the doorstep, in the pub and across our communities. This project is not simply to reopen our airport for passenger flights, it’s about the wider economic impacts, creating a hub for aviation related industry, delivering jobs and opportunities for our residents and putting Doncaster back on the map.”
Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, said: “Our first mission was to fix the foundations of our economy, now we are investing in Britain’s renewal so that we can build an economy that works for, and rewards, working people. The reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport is a huge milestone for communities and business across South Yorkshire, delivering better connections, jobs and economic growth.
We are ending the era of chaos and decline by choosing stability and investment, to grow our economy and put more money in working people’s pockets.”
Lee Pitcher MP for Doncaster East and the Isle of Axholme, said: “This isn’t just an airport – this is our airport. Having DSA open again will bring growth, jobs and opportunities for my constituency. Most importantly, it will bring the heart back to our community. For exactly that reason, when I was elected, my number one commitment was to get our airport reopened. Getting to where we are today has taken a huge team effort, and there is much still to do. I will continue to work with everyone to ensure our reopened airport is the success this community deserves.”
Now that a positive funding decision has been taken, significant passenger operations are not likely to commence until summer 2028 but with potential for limited passenger activity and cargo from winter 2027.
• Over 2,200 NHS patients have received life-saving immunoglobulin treatments from UKdonated plasma
• NHS Blood and Transplant reach major milestone with more than 574,000 litres of donated plasma now dispatched to be made into vital medicines
• Continued support from plasma and whole blood donors across England is crucial to increasing supply for 17,000 patients who rely on these medicines each year
NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), NHS England, the Department of Health and Social Care, and hospitals across the country are celebrating a significant milestone, with 2,221 NHS patients now treated with lifesaving immunoglobin medicines made from UK-donated plasma since the first patients began receiving treatment in March 2025.
The UK’s move to collect and use domestic plasma for the manufacture of vital treatments such as immunoglobulins and albumin significantly strengthens the supply chain of these vital treatments, boosting NHS supply, alongside imported medicines, to ensure patients can get what they need, when they need it. The UK’s plasma collection programme, led by NHS Blood and Transplant, has now enabled 574,402 litres of UK plasma to be transported across Europe to manufacture vital plasma-based medicines, including immunoglobulins and albumin, before bringing them back for use in UK hospitals.
This major achievement is a testament to the generosity of UK plasma and blood donors, whose contributions have been pivotal in making these life-saving medicines available to NHS patients.
Anthony Staincliffe, of Change Delivery and Performance for plasma: “Reaching this six-month milestone is an extraordinary achievement for everyone involved in getting this programme up and running, and demonstrates the real difference UK plasma donations are now making to lots of patients. The increased resilience in the supply of immunoglobulin and albumin across the NHS is a critical step towards
reducing reliance on imports from other countries. The generosity of donors is literally saving and improving lives right across the country. We urgently need more blood and plasma donors to help save and improve more lives. Even if you don’t live near one of our specialist plasma centres, every one of our blood donors also contributes to making these vital medicines, as we recover plasma from each blood donation too.”
James Palmer, National Medical Director for Specialised Services: “It’s fantastic to see the impact this new programme is already having in its first six months, with NHS staff able to provide life-saving treatments to more than 2,000 people who have now safely started on a medicine made from UK plasma donations. We’ve seen a real step-change that strengthens the medicine supply chain and UK resilience to global disruptions.”
Sarah Denman, Clinical Pharmacist: “The UK’s plasma programme is making a real difference. For clinicians, it is great to know we have a consistent supply of products that we can provide to our patients. We continue to urge more people to come forward and sign up as blood and plasma donors – your support means the world to the patients we treat and support every day, and these treatments just wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of those who donate.”
Dr Susan Walsh, CEO of Immunodeficiency UK, said: Having a UK supply means greater security for patients who rely on immunoglobulin to stay well and highlights the generosity of UK donors whose plasma is being transformed into life-saving therapies. Immunodeficiency UK welcomes this progress and thanks every donor whose gift is helping to protect the lives of people living with immunodeficiency.”
Every blood and plasma donor makes a vital contribution to making these lifesaving medicines. To find out more, book an appointment or register as either a blood or plasma donor, please visit: www. blood.co.uk, download the NHS Give Blood app or call 0300 123 23 23.
A major public appeal has been launched to restore an ultra rare survivor of the Sheffield Blitz in time for the 85th anniversary of the bombing raids this December.
The 1932 Leyland engine was centre-stage in December 1940 when Sheffield was devastated over two nights of bombing that killed and wounded more than 2,000 people, left almost a tenth of the city homeless and flattened much of the city centre. Now, 85 years later, the fire engine is in urgent need of costly restoration to return it to its wartime colours and livery before it takes pride of place in a newly expanded, permanent Sheffield Blitz exhibition which opens at the city’s National Emergency Services Museum (NESM) on Saturday 13 December 2025.
The Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trust and NESM are appealing to the public to raise £18,000 through a new GoFundMe campaign. The target covers not only the restoration of the Blitz fire engine (Stage 1: £9,000) but also the chance to secure a rare, roadworthy WWII police car for the collection (Stage 2: £9,000–£11,000).
Neil Anderson of the Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trust, said: “This fire engine was on the very front line when Sheffield burned in 1940. It is an ultra rare survivor of those nights, but after decades of hard use it
now needs saving itself. We only have a few weeks to raise the funds if it is to be ready for the anniversary exhibition in December. This is a unique chance for the people of Sheffield and South Yorkshire to rally round and preserve a vital part of our history.”
The restoration would ensure that the fire engine can once again be seen as it appeared during the Blitz, creating a striking centrepiece that will help bring the story of those nights vividly to life for future generations.
Matt Wakefield, CEO of the National Emergency Services Museum, added:
“The Sheffield Blitz exhibition has already proved hugely popular, doubling footfall when it was first unveiled. With National Lottery support we are now doubling its size, but this kind of specialist restoration falls outside the scope of our grant. That’s why we’re asking the public to get behind this appeal. With their help, we can save not just an engine, but a story of courage, sacrifice and resilience that deserves to be remembered for generations to come.” Donations can be made at: https://www. gofundme.com/f/helpus-rescue-sheffieldsforgotten-blitz-heroes Cheques can also be made payable to the Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trust and posted to: Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trust, 88 Abbeydale Road South, Millhouses, Sheffield S7 2QP.
tyre safety for students
New figures from the National Travel Survey underline a critical safety concern: tyres. Cars remain the dominant mode of travel in the UK, accounting for 59% of all trips and 73% of total distance travelled, with an average annual mileage of 6,082 miles per vehicle. With 78% of households owning at least one car, the scale of vehicle use—and the importance of tyre safety—cannot be overstated.
According to a recent UCAS report, 439,180 students across the UK have been accepted into universities, which means students will be preparing to hit the road to start or return to their studies this September and October. Due to rising living costs, and eyewatering rental expenses, a growing proportion may opt to travel to and from campus each day. Yet despite their central role in daily life, tyre neglect continues to pose a serious road safety risk. 152 people are killed or seriously injured each year in incidents linked to defective tyres—on par with mobile phone-related crashes. Alarmingly, 2023 saw a 29% increase in KSI casualties related to tyre

defects compared to 2022, the highest level since 2018.
Further analysis of National Highways data, by the Transport Research Laboratory, shows that 75% of tyre defects in fatal crashes are caused by basic lack of maintenance—a preventable factor.
Vehicle testing also highlights the scale of the issue: over two million MOT failures annually are due to tyre defects, with one million tyres classified as dangerous. Even more concerning, 36% of vehicles failing MOTs, equating to 750,00 of the 2.1 million inspected, for tyre defects in 2023 had previously received a warning—yet those advisories were ignored. Defective tyres are the fourth most common reason for MOT advisories, and nearly 60% of those tyres are classified as dangerous. TyreSafe is calling on all students and road users to make tyre safety a priority. Simple checks of tread depth, pressure, and overall condition can prevent incidents and keep journeys safe. Guidance on how to carry out a quick tyre check is available at www.tyresafe. org.

Social
Across the UK social clubs are disappearing at record speed and with them, the places where neighbours meet, friendships form and communities thrive.
One of the UKs biggest place based charities, Local Trust, has warned that each closure deeply damages already struggling areas, leaving people more isolated and less supported. Their loss, say Local Trust is felt most sharply in doubly disadvantaged neighbourhoods where few alternative spaces exist to bring people together and socialise.
Last week Local Trust was a key part of the Stronger Local Places: Rebuilding the Social Club Movement conference, which brought together community
leaders, charities and politicians to highlight how clubs could adapt and survive. Discussion also highlighted the barriers they face, from lack of registration to being overlooked by major funders in favour of schools or GP surgeries.
The Mildmay Club in London hosted the one-day conference dedicated to reviving the legacy and relevance of social clubs in the UK. With a focus on community assets, civil society, and social infrastructure, this event will bring together community developers, policymakers, charities, and funders to explore how nonprofit members clubs can address today’s pressing social challenges. The key themes of the conference include safeguarding the legacy

and assets of social clubs, integrating them into modern community frameworks, and highlighting their potential to strengthen community cohesion and local democracy. Attendees also collaborated developing a 21st-century club charter and discuss lobbying for social clubs to become essential components of new housing developments. Speaking at the conference
Madeleine Jennings, head of policy and communications at Local Trust said:
“Face-to-face, in person interaction is vital to growing trust and familiarity between community members. Social clubs are among the engines of social capital, serving communities in so many ways by
improving outcomes in health, education, employment and wellbeing. They are the also the perfect setting for the fostering of community identity based on shared interests or occupations.
We know there is a loneliness crisis among older people, and in part that’s because of the loss of the networks and mutual support that social clubs create.”
She also outlined how many Big Local areas have utilised social clubs to serve their residents.
“Many communities have used clubs to provide informal emotional and mental health support, especially during times of crisis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the pink ladies of Scotland and Bushbury Hill Big Local pivoted the social club to
deliver food parcels, check in on isolated neighbours, or provide creative outlets for stress relief.”
Further key points highlighted during the conference included: Social infrastructure and social capital have a key part to play in improving outcomes for deprived communities, as evidenced through the Big Local programme.
Many social clubs are not registered, making it difficult for any major funding or formalised funding opportunity to come to them.
There is the need to design social infrastructure and clubs specifically for young people. This could include after-school clubs, weekend programmes, or interest-based youth groups.

“Following a difficult start to the season, the board felt it necessary to make a change in order to stabilise performances and strengthen our push for promotion. While the adoption of a different style of play was pursued with ambition, results have clearly not met expectations.
Owls manager Henrik Pedersen has reflected on another difficult day at Hillsborough as his side were beaten 3-0 by Bristol City. The damage was all done inside the first 32 minutes as the Robins opened up a threegoal lead, including a deadlock-breaker just six minutes in.
It left a mountain to climb for the Owls, who were left to pick up the pieces from three straight defeats on
home soil in 2025/26.
For Pedersen, the manner of the goals conceded was disappointing and he said post-match:
“It was a tough game, I think we gave ourselves a difficult beginning because it was equal the first four or five minutes.
“Set pieces, we win the ball and then give the ball away easily and then they score a little bit of a random goal and then we come back
“Chris Wilder returns with proven leadership and an unparalleled understanding of Sheffield United. We are confident he is the right person to restore momentum, unite the squad and supporters, and deliver the results necessary to achieve our objectives this season. We would like to thank Rubén Sellés for his hard work in the game again.
“But after 18 minutes, we have a set piece at the other end and we get a transition against us, we work hard to win the ball, but we lose it again and then they make a goal from the space in behind from a deep run.
“We came back but I could see we had lost a little confidence on the ball and we were a little too direct and played too may long balls.
“We went down 3-0

and professionalism during his time at the club. Responsibility for recent results lies with us as owners, and we remain fully committed to supporting the team and pursuing promotion.”
Wilder’s association with the Blades is one which goes back decades and he needs little introduction at Bramall Lane.

MccANN oN WIgAN ‘REALIT y cHEcK’ FoR RoVERS
Grant McCann believes Rovers’ defeat at Wigan Athletic was a reality check about life in Sky Bet League One.
Rovers were well beaten at the Brick Community Stadium with two quick fire goals in the first half putting the hosts firmly in command.
McCann was bitterly disappointed with the manner of the performance from his side and said the outcome was a demonstration of what happens when standards set so far this season are not met.
“I think it’s a reality check,” he said. “It’s a learning day for us.
“It’s the first time I can honestly say that we’ve been off it this season but it’s a lesson for us that if you’re off it, the you’ll be punished at this level. We certainly have done.
and another easy loss of the ball again.
“But in the second half the boys kept working, they do always what they can and we also had possibilities to get maybe a 3-1.
“They worked well to make sure we didn’t concede any more goals in the second half.” Pedersen praised his side’s mentality in difficult circumstances and continued:
“I think it shows a lot in the group, you can
Rotherham loanee Holmes faces two months out
Rotherham United defender Thomas Holmes faces a two-month recovery period due to injury.
Holmes, who joined Luton Town in January 2024, is currently in his third loan spell away from the Hatters and joined the MIllers on deadline day.
The 25-year-old is expected to be sidelined for approximately two months after suffering a knee injury. Holmes signed on loan for the season from the Hatters and played the full match in Rotherham’s victory over Exeter City erlier in the month.
However, a recent scan revealed that he sustained a Grade 2 tear to his lateral collateral ligament.
“I spoke to Thomas this morning, and he’s devastated,” said Millers manager Matt Hamshaw.
“He feels like he’s let everyone down, but he absolutely hasn’t. It’s a tough situation for him, especially since he had just returned to playing.
We’re hopeful he’ll be back in about eight weeks.”
It’s another blow for Rotherham who currently sit 18th in League One with seven points from their first seven games.
be 3-0 down but not to give up, you could have a ‘give up mentality’ but they didn’t, and they worked so hard to support each other.
“It’s hard, we are here to win football games and here to go from the stadium with three points but to lose again, we hate this.
“But for me, I have said before my job is to look behind and see that improvement in different areas of the game.
“Today I saw our general organised press was a big step ahead, we were organised but how we conceded our chances was today the problem.
“We won the ball but then lost the ball and in the half-track is where we had problems.
“I can see some steps forward but I can also see some steps backward and losing the ball today was expensive for us.”

“We just weren’t at our levels. Nowhere near. “Wigan were better in every single department than us. Credit to Ryan Lowe and his team.
“But we weren’t anywhere near where I know we can be.
“I said to the players that it is a bit of a reality check for us. It’s back down to earth with a bang.
“That’s what happens when you don’t hit the levels that we demand and the players demand of themselves.
“I can stand here and talk about mistakes for the goals but ultimately they had more aggression than us, more tempo, more intensity, they won more duels and we couldn’t compete with it.
“That’s disappointed me and that’s probably hurt me more than anything.
“I’m fine if a team out-footballs us and beats us. No problem. What I can’t live with is that sort of performance and I’m hoping it’s just a one off.” McCann said the frustrations of the performance will be addressed quickly as Rovers look to bounce back against AFC Wimbledon next weekend.
“We’ve got to address it,” he said. “We’ve got to pick the bones out of it first and foremost and then get back on the training ground.
“We need to press the reset button and go again next week at home. It’s as simple as that.
“We need to respond. We’ve responded well to defeats before and we need to do that again.”
