Sheffield Safe Square returns to keep residents safe Newport Road, North Cave,
As residents and visitors enjoy the festivities over Christmas, the city’s dedicated Safe Square initiative is returning to provide vital support for those enjoying the celebrations. With Christmas and New Year fast approaching, thousands of people will be heading to the city centre to enjoy the festivities. To ensure people can enjoy themselves as safely as possible, the Safer Sheffield Partnership – made up of Sheffield City Council, South Yorkshire Police, public and voluntary sector partners – are bringing back the Safe Square initiative. Located in Barkers Pool, Sheffield Safe Square
offers a free, welcoming space for anyone in need of welfare or medical assistance during a night out. Open from 10:30pm to 4am, the service will be available throughout the Christmas and New Year period, ensuring people have access to care and support right in the heart of the city centre. It will run every Friday and Saturday night in December and on New Year’s Eve. Safe Square also supports South Yorkshire’s Safer Streets Winter of Action campaign, which brings together police, local authorities, businesses, and community organisations to make town and city

centres safer and more welcoming throughout the festive season. Councillor Kurtis Crossthorn, Chair of the Communities Parks and Leisure Committee at Sheffield City Council said “We want people to enjoy themselves, but we also want to ensure that everyone is safe and feels secure when out enjoying themselves. Safe Square is a free to use, non-judgemental service open to anyone in the city centre needing help or support during the night and I am delighted that it will this December. So far, it has been incredibly successful and has helped hundreds of individuals whilst out enjoying the local

Crystal Peaks wins national award for exhibition
A major new summer art event at Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre has been announced as the winner of the Best Community Initiative Purple Apple award at the Revo’s, the annual celebration hosted by Revo, the UK’s leading membership organisation focused on retail and leisure-led real estate. The Crystal Peak 2024 Art for All campaign featured specially commissioned work from over 60 celebrities and creatives with links to South Yorkshire and beyond, including Olympic legend Dame
Jessica Ennis-Hill, BBC Radio Sheffield’s Paulette Edwards and comedians Jon Richardson and Paul Chuckle. Each participant created inspiring custom art pieces for donation to the shopping centre’s pop-up art exhibition, free for visitors to attend and enjoy on their visit to Crystal Peaks. The art pieces then went into an online raffle which generated £10,000 for the Bright Young Dreams campaign, founded by Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill in 2023 to address the urgent global crisis in children’s mental health, in support of
The Children’s Hospital Charity. The event, organised by Crystal Peaks Office Administrator Clare Burnett, has been awarded the Best Community Initiative Purple Apple Award at the Revo’s, showcasing excellence, innovation and achievement within the sector, widely regarded as the benchmark for excellence in the retail property industry. The judges were inspired by Crystal Peak’s initiative, praising its powerful collaboration with schools, charities, and
the wider community, and its focus on support for children’s mental health. Its low-cost, zerowaste approach, strong engagement, and lasting community impact set a benchmark for grassroots initiatives. Art for All organiser Clare Burnett said: “Crystal Peaks is a massively enthusiastic supporter of The Children’s Hospital Charity and the exhibition was extremely popular with all our visitors. “Even so, I had no idea that it would go on to be nominated for a national award and I can only thank all the fantastic artists who gave their

don’t bin your batteries parkwood regeneration top tips to protect NHS New research has revealed that an incredible £1.7b was spent on 183m FastTech (cheap) Christmas lights (and the batteries for them!) ahead of Christmas. As a nation, it’s clear we can’t get enough of twinkly lights come December, but research has revealed the impact of these lights - many contain batteries that when binned or incorrectly recycled are behind the surge of fires in the waste stream. This Christmas, Recycle Your Electricals is calling on the nation to help prevent these fires by instead recycling broken and unwanted lights, batteries and other FastTech Christmas gifts. Christmas lights in particular signal the entry into the merriest of seasons, a love so strong we bought the equivalent of six light-up items a second ahead of last Christmas - from 39m Christmas fairy lights to a variety of novelty light-up items, including stars and wreaths, snow globes and reindeer. They adorn our homes, our gardens, our living spaces and spread Christmas cheer. But whilst these lights brighten the winter months during the solstice, there’s a challenging side too. The reality is, that as quickly as we buy our festive lights, we are almost as quickly binning them. Over a year, 168m lightup items and FastTech gifts ended up in the bin, causing hundreds of battery fires across the UK. Many FastTech or lightup electrical items are powered by batteries which, if end up in the wrong bin, get crushed and damaged in bin and recycling lorries and spark dangerous fires that put firefighters, waste workers and the communities we live in at serious risk. There were over 1,200 battery fires during 2023-24 in bins and waste centres, an increase of 71% from 2022 - with many taking place in bin lorries, waste centres and recycling centres as a result of batteries and electricals being binned or incorrectly recycled. Earlier research has found that 1.1b of all types of electricals and 449.9m loose volatile batteries have been binned - each a potential fire waiting to happen. These fires are extremely challenging, often
leading to explosions and chemical exposure, as they create their own oxygen, which means they can keep reigniting. And as we approach the busiest time of year for our waste and fire services, Recycle Your Electricals wants to celebrate the Unsung Heroes tackling and preventing battery fires and keeping us safe. Joining our firefighting heroes who keep us safe on the frontline are our waste workers: the Bin Lorry Operators, to the Waste Site workers who sort through discarded tech, educate colleagues and crucially, prevent fires from happening at all. With the National Fire Chiefs Council warning that “fires involving lithium-ion batteries are a disaster waiting to happen”, first responders, particularly the fire services, can often find themselves tackling suspected battery fires for days, especially in waste centres. But it’s not just the fire services who are impacted by fires caused by waste electricals being binned. They’re a “constant worry” according to Danni Kelly. One member of her team, Ricky Taylor, a Bin Lorry Loader, has experienced three battery fires this year alone. Ricky shared that the dramatic increase in waste at Christmastime means he and his team are more vigilant than ever about preventing fires at this time of year. How can consumers help? As well as properly recycling batteries and electricals at designated drop-off points, there are other ways consumers can help stem the tide of FastTech - without losing the magic of Christmas. Now that a quarter of all FastTech “gifts”1 are bought for Secret Santa or as stocking fillers - consumer expert Professor Cathrine Jansson-Boyd says: “The key to a good Christmas present is to ensure that it is durable, so people can enjoy it for a long time. This helps to create long-lasting emotional connections with the receiver. So not only will the present warm a heart at Christmas, but continue to do so every time it is being used.” UK residents can find their nearest drop off point thanks to Recycle Your Electricals Recycling Locator, which has over 30,000 recycling points.
The Friends of Wardsend Cemetery are delighted to announce a new collaborative partnership with Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust and National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET). This initiative will create exciting opportunities for local people to engage with heritage and nature across Parkwood Springs, Sheffield, by opening up access to green spaces and enhancing biodiversity. Wardsend Cemetery Heritage Park is a unique hillside green space in Owlerton, rich with Victorian history and thriving wildlife. Since its closure in 1988, the cemetery has evolved into a mosaic of habitats, offering a sanctuary for nature and a place of reflection As part of the agreement, NGET has leased its non-operational land near the Neepsend substation to Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust for biodiversity improvements, including habitat management and creation. Improvements to the land, which is adjacent to the cemetery, will enable improved connectivity and conservation efforts. The initiative supports NGET’s broader commitment to increase the environmental value of non-operational land by 10% against a natural capital and biodiversity baseline, delivering tangible benefits for both wildlife and local communities across non-operational land. Howard Bayley, Chair of Friends of Wardsend Cemetery, said: “This is a significant step forward for Wardsend Cemetery Heritage Park. We’ve worked tirelessly to restore and conserve this space, and it’s fantastic to see its potential recognized as an accessible green space for the community.” The partnership will also deliver educational opportunities. Historian and educator Meghan Tipping, through her organisation Rooted in Talk, will lead creative, dialogic sessions for young people, fostering connections with both historical and natural heritage. Meghan aims to prioritize local groups to ensure accessibility and reduce travel costs. To support this, Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust will deliver a 10-year community engagement programme across the
wider Parkwood Springs area, including school visits, guided walks and wellbeing sessions to inspire local people to connect with nature on their doorstep. Working with volunteers, the Trust will improve the site for nature by carrying out vital habitat management work. This work will help contribute to nature recovery and increasing climate resilience across the wider Parkwood Springs area, including Wardsend Cemetery Heritage Park. Cathy Slater, Head of Community Engagement at Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, said: “Parkwood Springs represents an important opportunity for the city both in terms of supporting nature’s recovery and people’s health and wellbeing. Around 10,000 people live within a 5-minute walk of Parkwood Springs, with the communities of Southey, Hillsborough, Burgreave and the city centre in close proximity. We’re excited to have the opportunity to deliver a wide range of activities to support more people in accessing this important green space, discovering the wildlife that lives on their doorstep and developing a connection to nature, which we know is so beneficial for our health and wellbeing.” Anna Kilty, Land Sustainability Strategy Manager at NGET, said: “NGET is proud to partner with the Friends of Wardsend Cemetery and Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, facilitating access to the wider area through this agreement and by leasing land to Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust. This partnership directly supports our environmental value target—to increase the environmental value of our non-operational land by at least 10% by 2026. By focusing on habitat enhancement and community engagement, we’re creating meaningful opportunities for local people while improving biodiversity and protecting heritage for future generations.” This partnership aligns with the £19 million Local Growth funding that will transform Parkwood Springs with improved footpaths, wayfinding, and welcoming entrances - making it easier for everyone to enjoy this remarkable landscape.

It can also make people feel lonelier and more isolated than usual, especially older people and those with disabilities. Here are ten easy ways to help yourself, others and NHS services this winter. 1. Use the NHS App or your GP practice website to get medical advice and book non-urgent appointments. 2. Check if you can get a free flu or COVID19 vaccine at nhs.uk/ vaccinations. If not, you might be able to pay for a flu jab at your local pharmacy. 3. Find tips for looking after yourself and details about local services at togetherwe-can. com. Parents and carers can get advice at wyhealthiertogether. nhs.uk. 4. If you’re unwell this winter, rest and drink plenty of fluids. Go to your local pharmacy for medical advice and treatments. 5. Check your prescription medication
and make sure you have enough to last over the Christmas bank holidays. 6. Good hand hygiene helps stop bugs spreading. Wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water, particularly after using the toilet, before eating or preparing food.
7. If you need mental health support, visit togetherwe-can.com/ mental-health. For urgent help in a mental health crisis call NHS 111, option 2 any time. 8. For quick health advice (not emergencies), use 111.nhs.uk or call 111 if you can’t get online or need help for a child aged 5 or under. 9. Be kind to NHS staff and each other. Check in on neighbours who may be feeling lonely or who need support, especially in bad weather. 10. Help vulnerable friends and family keep warm and stay well at home this winter to help prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems. St Agnes Fountain have been called THE Christmas band for their constantly evolving take on old carols as well as the wealth of new seasonal music they bring each year to their sell-out shows. Since their first get together, to record the eponymous St Agnes Fountain album in 2001, the quartet; David Hughes, Fairport Convention’s Chris Leslie and multi award winning duo Chris While and Julie Matthews, have brought musical invention and laughter to the star-dust atmosphere of the season. In 2020, David decided to leave the band and very sadly died earlier this year. There will never been another quite like him, he was simply a one off. One thing we can say without any doubt is that David wouldn’t have wanted to rest in peace, he would want to be putting on his fedora, tapping his foot out to some insane syncopated rhythm and leading us all in a celebration of a life of love, laughter and mirth. Chris, Chris and Julie intend to do just that, keeping the Christmas Aggie spirit alive and touring as a trio celebrating 23 years together with some new material, those old Aggie classics and a doff of the fedora to David. Although the albums accompany the putting up of a thousand Christmas trees throughout Britain and around the globe it is, without question, their magical live performances that have endeared them to an ever-growing audience.

Free ice-skating rink set for Sheffield City Centre Sheffield City Centre will be transformed this January with a vibrant Fan Zone – complete with a free to use artificial ice rink – set up in celebration of the ISU Figure Skating European Championships Sheffield 2026. From 13–18 January, the city will proudly host Europe’s premier skating event at the Sheffield Utilita Arena, marking the UK’s first time in over a decade to welcome this prestigious competition. Sheffield is ready to roll out
the red carpet for world-class athletes and fans from across the continent. While the Championships unfold at the Arena, the excitement will also be felt in the city centre. Residents, visitors, and skating enthusiasts will be able to soak up the atmosphere at The European Championships Fan Zone. Located at the Sheffield Peace Gardens, the Fan Zone will feature a free-to-use ice-skating rink, alongside a big screen broadcasting
live competition coverage, highlights, and sponsor content. The Fan Zone is hosted by Sheffield City Council and British Ice Skating, with additional support from Sheffield BID and UK Sport. Councillor Mohammed Mahroof, Chair of the Economic Development, Skills and Culture Committee at Sheffield City Council says “We’re delighted to welcome ISU Figure Skating European Championships to Sheffield, and to bring the excitement
right into the city centre for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’ve got tickets for the Arena or not, the Fan Zone gives people of all ages a chance to be part of the event and feel the excitement. It also helps create a lasting legacy of participation, pride and wellbeing across our communities. To ensure sustainability, the rink will be artificial rather than real ice – a more environmentally friendly option that still offers a fantastic skating experience. This approach helps reduce energy use while making the rink accessible to everyone.

Blades boss Chris Wilder gave an honest assessment of his side’s display offering no excuses for a difficult night following a 2-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion. McCann hails ‘brave’ Rovers in agonising Cardiff defeat
