Newport Road, North Cave, Council issues update on future of Riding of Yorkshire HU15 2NU SHEFFIELD Social Club DAMAGED AFTER FIRE East Tel: 01430 421188 It’s been more than a year since a fire devastated the former Manor Social Club on City Road, destroying the roof and leaving much of the building in an unsafe condition. Since then, Sheffield City Council officers have made numerous attempts to contact the owners of the building to discuss what happens next, but they have been unable engage with them. During this time, the Council has, at a considerable cost, maintained 24-hour security on site owing

to the risks associated with someone seeking to gain entry into the badly damaged and incredibly dangerous building. With the building in such a poor and unsafe state and the lack of communication from the owners, the Council has been left with no option but to begin demolition work on the former social club, starting in early January. “It’s sad to see the condition this once important building to the local community has been left in

following the awful fire earlier this year. Officers from the Council have tried for several months to engage with the owner of the building but without success. Since the fire, we have maintained 24-hour security to prevent people going into what is an incredibly dangerous site. Despite the numerous attempts to engage the owners, sadly, it has come to the point where the City Council needs to act, and demolition of the building is the appropriate option

given the ongoing risks.” - Cllr Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council The Council is urging the owners of the building to come forward and

engage with officers on the future of the building and the site as quickly as possible. The Council will also be looking to recover any associated costs in the future including providing the security and demolition of the former social club.

Tramlines announces 2025 charity funding

Tramlines Festival has announced £58,000 in funding for local and national projects in 2025, continuing its support for community initiatives through the Tramlines Trust and other partnerships. The festival has now raised over £319,000 for charity since moving to Hillsborough Park in 2018. A total of 42 organisations have received support this year through the Tramlines Trust’s funding round, which saw a large number of applications from grassroots projects, charities and community groups across the region. Priority was given to initiatives

that improve access to music and the arts, reduce food and fuel poverty, support mental health and wellbeing, and create opportunities for young people. The 2025 round included over £20,000 raised for the Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation, as well as a further £5,000 donated to Doctors Without Borders as part of a new and ongoing charity partnership. A significant portion of onsite donations was directed to the Tramlines Trust, which has awarded more than £120,000 in small grants since launching in 2022. Several organisations based

in and around Hillsborough received dedicated funding, including Hillsborough Arena, Holme Lane Community Garden, and Soundpost’s Green Open Spaces Walking Trail project. S6 Foodbank also benefited from a direct community push in the run-up to the festival’s artist announcement. In November, Tramlines launched a tongue-incheek Spill the Beans teaser campaign. Hundreds across the UK received specially branded tins of beans in the post, each revealing the name of a 2026 artist ahead of the official reveal. Fans were also invited

to donate food to the S6 Foodbank in Hillsborough, where anyone making a contribution received one of the limited-edition tins in return. The campaign continued Tramlines’ longstanding commitment to local causes, with further community activity planned throughout the year. Across the city, funding has reached a wide range of organisations and ideas. Roundabout will continue its music education partnership with RiteTrax to deliver DJing and production workshops for young people in supported housing. Disability Sheffield is growing its

inclusive sports provision, while Bloom Sheffield is extending its Winter Wellbeing programme to support socially isolated women throughout the colder months. Another standout moment of the year came from Under the Stars, a longtime partner of Tramlines, whose Stars Band returned to the festival line-up in 2025. Funding from the Tramlines Trust helped cover the essential costs of staff and safeguarding support, enabling talented performers with learning disabilities to take to the stage. The performance was a clear celebration

of inclusion and musical achievement, earning heartfelt applause from audiences and showcasing the power of creativity across all abilities. Funding has also supported grief support books for children, free community hiking and holistic wellbeing days, arts award access for young people with additional needs, food distribution to families through local schools, and a new women’s football team in Lowfield backed by Football Unites, Racism Divides. blitz bear returns to city “home from home” appeal eight year old’s award A small teddy bear with an extraordinary history is set to take centrestage as the city marks the 85th anniversary of the Sheffield Blitz this weekend. Known as ‘Teddy Dodgson’, he was originally bought on 12 December, 1940, by Cyril Dodgson, who rushed into Atkinsons department store as staff were closing the store. That last-minute dash made the bear the final item ever sold before the entire store was destroyed just hours later in the first night of the Sheffield Blitz. Cyril’s young daughter, Brenda, kept the bear throughout her life and he has now travelled almost 200 miles from Somerset to return to the city where his remarkable story began. Brenda, now living with dementia, treasured the bear for more than eight decades and her family have loaned him to the National Emergency Services Museum so he can take centrestage in the brand new permanent Sheffield Blitz exhibition. Alongside him stands a fully restored 1932 Leyland fire engine that fought the fires of the blitz. Together they capture the human story of those nights — the ordinary family moments suddenly cut short, and the extraordinary bravery of the firefighters who battled the devastation. The wider exhibition brings together rare artefacts, original documents, first-hand testimonies, immersive displays and new AI reconstructions. It offers Sheffield its most comprehensive and personal interpretation of the Blitz ever staged with many objects either loaned or given to the museum by people of the city. Trust said: ““It’s astonishing that a simple bear bought on a whim outlived the destruction that followed only hours later. Teddy brings us face-to-face with the ordinary lives swept up in those terrifying nights. Set alongside the restored fire engine, he helps show the reality of what Sheffield lived through and why these stories still matter.” The new exhibition forms part of the wider Sheffield Blitz 85th project, supported by a Ј91,280 award from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Over the past two years the project has been recording the memories of the last surviving generation that experienced the blitz, the people that were kids in World War Two. Matt Wakefield, chief executive of the National Emergency Services Museum, said: “Our original Sheffield Blitz exhibition was one of the most popular displays we’ve ever mounted, and the support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund has allowed us to double its size and tell the story in far greater depth. What makes this exhibition truly special is the generosity of the people of Sheffield, who have loaned and donated extraordinary artefacts that carry real family history. ‘Teddy Dodgson’ is one of those objects. His arrival, alongside the restored fire engine, helps us share a story that belongs to the whole city.” The 85th anniversary weekend also includes film screenings at Sheffield Cathedral, the unveiling of a memorial to the eight firefighters who died in the attacks and the launch of a new Blitz book and walking app.

When Dom Smith and his partner Tess welcomed their son Flynn into the world in late January 2025, they would never have imagined the journey that lay ahead. Born with a severe bowel defect at the Jessop Wing in Sheffield, Flynn needed urgent, life-saving surgery at just a few hours old. He was immediately taken to Sheffield Children’s Hospital, spending more than a week in the neonatal surgical unit recovering from complex treatment. During those difficult early days Dom and Tess were supported by Magnolia House, a ‘Home from Home’ run by The Sick Children’s Trust for families with a seriously ill child, located just minutes from the ward where Flynn was receiving care. It meant they could stay close to their newborn son without worrying about the financial and emotional strain of travelling back and forth from their own home in the south of Sheffield. “Magnolia House became our base and sanctuary,” said Dom. “It meant we could be right by his side through it all. We’ll never forget that.” Eleven months later, life looks very different for the family of three. As Christmas approaches, they’ve been reflecting on how everything that has happened and just how far they have come. ‘We’ve settled into a routine as a family’ “Things have been going well,” said Dom. “We’ve settled into a routine as a family, and we can see Flynn making progress each day. It’s been encouraging, and we’re very grateful for all the support we’ve received along the way.” Flynn, now nearly one, has continued to amaze everyone around him with his resilience, but his journey isn’t over yet. “Flynn is doing well and is preparing for his second operation on 16 December,” Dom explained. “We feel optimistic about the next step, and it’s encouraging to see the progress he’s made so far. We’re hopeful for the future and taking it one day at a time.” A year of milestones and challenges As the year draws to a close, the family have

found themselves reflecting on an extraordinary twelve months. “Looking back, it’s been quite a year,” continued Dom. “There have been some challenging moments, but also a lot of progress and milestones with Flynn. Seeing how he’s developing has been encouraging, and it’s brought us closer together as a family.” That sense of gratitude inspired Dom to take on a major fundraising challenge of his own. In June, he ran 100 miles in June as part of The Sick Children’s Trust’s Home to Home Challenge, which encouraged people to fundraise through sponsored walks, runs, swims or cycles. He raised £2,265 against a target of £2,000, enough to fund a 56-night stay for a family in our ‘Homes from Home’. “The Sick Children’s Trust gave us so much,” said Dom. “Their support made such a difference during Flynn’s stay, and I want to help ensure other families get the same. Sharing our story and fundraising felt like a small way to give something back.” A first Christmas as a family of three Now, with Flynn’s first Christmas approaching, Dom and Tess are preparing for a festive season they once feared might feel very different. And after everything they’ve been through, it’s the small moments that mean the most. “After a busy year, it will be good to pause and see how much progress Flynn has made. Celebrating his first birthday in January will make the start of the New Year feel even more meaningful.” ‘Every donation gives hope, love and a safe place to be together’ With all 147 rooms across our ten of the charity’s ‘Homes from Home’ expected to be full over the Christmas period, Dom hopes others will support the charity that helped keep his own family close. A schoolgirl whose family nurture the next generation of assistance dogs was surprised with a top honour after tackling Wales’ highest peak. Isabelle Lauder, eight, thought she was going along to Support Dogs’ annual Graduation and Awards ceremony to see some of the life-changing assistance dogs she and her family have helped to care for graduate as successful partnerships alongside their humans. But she was gobsmacked to hear her name called out as she was crowned Young Volunteer of the Year by the Sheffieldbased charity, which trains and provides specialist assistance dogs to help autistic children, as well as adults with epilepsy or a physical disability, to live more safely and independently. In July, just two days after celebrating her eighth birthday, Isabelle, from Wombwell in Barnsley, scaled the 3,560ft Mount Snowdon with her dad Tom, raising almost £700 for the charity, which relies solely on voluntary donations. Isabelle, Tom, her mum Fran and 10-year-old brother Oliver have been volunteer foster carers for the charity for three years, looking after its wonderdogs-in-training when they’re not at Support Dogs’ training centre. Tom and Kings Oak Primary School pupil Isabelle decided to tackle the epic climb as part of the charity’s Super Summer Challenge. Fran, 38, told the

audience at the glitzy awards bash at the Sandman Signature Sheffield Quays Hotel: “Doing the climb has been really good for Isabelle. She even printed out QR codes and got her teachers to sponsor her. Everybody in school knew about it. She was so passionate about it. It’s been memorable for our summer holidays and she kept on seeing herself in the newspaper as well.” Dad Tom, a 41-year-old who has previously taken part in Support Dogs’ annual abseil and paddleboarded the 23-mile length of Loch Ness for the charity, said: “Isabelle is quite a tenacious girl and really keen to help. Her face was a picture when her name was announced. She’s taken her trophy into school to show everyone. We’ve always loved dogs and being foster carers is a good way for us to have a dog because we work in the day, while doing our bit for charity.” The family have looked after loveable Labs Spot, Buster and Peggy, who are now fully-qualified autism assistance dogs, and Frank, another fully-fledged autism assistance dog who has recently graduated and was honoured amongst Support Dogs’ Class of ’25 during the ceremony. HALF of Britain’s youngsters aged 18-24 are so worried about making ends meet they fear they could be made homeless in the next 12 months, a shock poll has found. A new survey carried out for youth homelessness charity, Depaul UK found 47 per cent of that age group worry they will end up on the streets and more than a third think they will never own a home of their own. The new data comes as the charity reveals its emergency accommodation services are struggling to keep up with unprecedented demand as youth homelessness in the UK reaches breaking point. More than 118,000 young people aged 16 to 24 turned to their local authorities for help because they are homeless or at risk of sleeping rough between April 2023 to March 2024. Depaul UK has launched an urgent appeal, ‘Turn Fear into Hope’, which is exposing the forces driving young people onto the streets or into unsafe places. They include: family breakdown, the cost-of-living crisis, a severe shortage of affordable homes,

vanishing supported accommodation. Vital funds raised from the appeal will help fund Nightstop, Depaul UK’s unique and rapidresponse emergency accommodation service for young people. How you can help • £8 could cover the travel costs for a young person to reach a safe place to stay. Depaul UK is encouraging the public to consider small but life-changing donations. Donations will be doubled, which means we can double our efforts to turn fear into hope for young people.’ • £18 could ensure there’s someone at the end of the phone for a young person with nowhere else to turn • £38 could provide a safe bed for the night in a host’s home, including travel costs, a hot meal, washing facilities and toiletries • £54 could buy pyjamas and a set of clothes for someone who has left everything behind to reach safety. FINAL LINE-UP ANNOUNCED FOR STRICTLY LIVE SHOWS The final four couples for the hotly anticipated 2026 Strictly Live Tour were announced last week: YouTuber, Podcaster, and social media star George Clarke and Alexis Warr; Emmerdale star Lewis Cope & Katya Jones; and former professional footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink & Lauren Oakley. And, as a special treat for Strictly fans, 2023 series finalist Layton Williams will make a sensational return to the dance floor as a special guest, reuniting with professional partner Nikita Kuzmin. Unfortunately Lewis Cope won’t be appearing at the Sheffield Shows. BLADES RETURN TO WINNING WAYS United returned to winning ways with a comprehensive home success over Birmingham City on Saturday afternoon. Tyler Bindon’s early header set the ball rolling before Tommy Doyle was giving his marching orders for a foul on Gus Hamer, who added a second before the break, with Patrick Bamford adding a third in the opening minutes of the second half, in a game the hosts dominated from start to finish. Boss Wilder made five changes to his side for the final home game of 2025. Following the loss at West Brom, recalls were handed to McCallum, Bindon, Arblaster, O’Hare and Chong, with Burrows, McGuinness, Soumaré, Brooks and Campbell all dropped to the bench. Mentality and culture Henrik Pedersen praised the mentality and culture in his team following the Owls’ 3-1 defeat to Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
