MAYOR WANTS YOUR VIEWS ON LOCAL POLICING

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard has outlined his ambition for more visible policing on our streets and to reduce neighbourhood crime and tackle antisocial behaviour through more investment in policing.

The Mayor is inviting residents to share their views on his proposals before he sets the police precept - the part of local council tax that helps fund South Yorkshire Police.

Local police and fire services are funded through a mix of government grants (around three quarters of the total budget) and the remainder is raised through the council tax precept.

In South Yorkshire, the policing precept makes up about 11% of a typical council tax bill.

Extra funding for policing means better policing: safer

neighbourhoods, more visible policing, quicker response times and for officers to be equipped with the modern tools they need to do their job.

If the precept is increased in line with government expectations - £15 per year (29 pence per week) for a Band D property or a £10 increase (or 19 pence per week) for a Band A property, South Yorkshire Police will receive £396.5 million next year. That includes £289.8 million from the government and £106.7 million from the precept - a 4.7% (£17.8 million) increase on last year’s settlement. The majority of properties in South Yorkshire are in Band A – 57%.

Before making his decision on increasing the policing precept, the Mayor is seeking views from across

the communities of South Yorkshire. The results will help to inform his decision which will be proposed to the Police and Crime Panel in February 2026.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “One of the most important jobs I have as South Yorkshire’s Mayor is to make sure South Yorkshire Police has the resources it needs to keep us and our communities safe. That means making sure our police are focused on the priorities we share, and that every pound is spent wisely to deliver on those priorities.

“I’ve heard what matters most: reducing neighbourhood crime, more visible policing on our streets, tackling antisocial behaviour and serious, violent crime, and making our transport network safer.

A modest increase to the police precept would help the police to tackle those priorities.

“Every year, I have to make tough decisions about how we fund policing – balancing what our police need to do their job with the impact on household budgets. That’s why I want to hear from everyone across South Yorkshire before I set the precept that helps pay for our police.”

PUBLIC TRANSPORT FARE FREEZES AND CUT THIS NEW YEAR New Year’s Day brought a major boost for public transport in South Yorkshire as Supertram fares and child concessionary fares across bus and tram are frozen, along with a cut to the long distance single Supertram fare.

The fare freeze is the first in a non-Covid pandemic year for over 25 years and means that from January 1st 2026: Supertram fares will be frozen at their current rate.

The Adult Long Distance Supertram single fare will reduce in price from £3.40 to £3 - putting the cost in line with the national bus fare cap price.

The child concessionary fare across buses and trams will remain at just £1 per journey.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “My mission is simple: to create a world-class, integrated public transport system that’s affordable and accessible. For decades, Supertram has suffered from a lack of investment, and fixing that hasn’t been easy.

But we’ve brought Supertram back under public control – and buses will follow in 2027.

“That means decisions are made here in South Yorkshire, for the benefit of the people who live and work here – including the fares you pay. Whether you’re commuting, studying, visiting family or heading out for the night, we’re building a transport network that works for everyone.

“From January, for the whole of 2026, we’re cutting the price of an adult long-distance tram ticket from £3.40 to £3 and freezing all other Supertram fares.

We’re also keeping the child concessionary fare at £1 across buses and trams – helping families travel more easily.

“Freezing and reducing fares is just the start. In 2026, we’ll also open the new tram-train station at Magna, as well as spending millions to make the network more resilient and reliable, and accelerate our preparations for bus franchising in 2027. It’s going to be an

exciting year as we continue to transform our public transport in South Yorkshire.”

The fares decision was taken at a meeting of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) Board in November, chaired by South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard, to support people with the cost of living and encourage the public back onto public transport.

Since Supertram was brought back into public control, work has started on a £110m investment

by SYMCA into the existing tram network improving the track, the lines and the network – and initiatives including allowing dogs on trams are opening up the network to more people.

The reduction in the cost of the Adult Long Distance Supertram Single fare applies to on-board purchases of single tickets. Passengers can also continue to make more savings on travel by purchasing multiday tickets and using the TSY Mobile App where further discounts apply.

More information on the tram fare changes will be available to customers via Travel South Yorkshire (TSY) and Supertram social media channels, on the TSY website and leaflets on the trams.

The child concessionary fare was first introduced in South Yorkshire in 1984 and is now funded by SYMCA. Since November 2023 the price for a ticket has been £1 and the freeze on the fare applies across Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

In Barnsley, SYMCA is one of the partners, along with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, funding the MiCard pilot which currently offers free bus travel for children and young people aged 5 to 18, as long as the journey starts or ends in the Barnsley local authority area and is within South Yorkshire.

To date, child journey numbers in Barnsley compared to the same period last year have seen a 50 percent increase. The Mayor has an ambition to offer free bus travel to those aged 5 to 18 across South Yorkshire and the Barnsley pilot evaluation will inform next steps for the region.

Over the past year there has been a slight overall fall in the number of children and young people using buses so initiatives such as freezing the concessionary fare and the Barnsley MiCard pilot aim to increase usage by opening up more travel options and opportunities.

15-year-old makes it her mission to give back to Sheffield Children’s Hospital

The Rashid family, from Sheffield, are once again giving back to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity in 2026, with 15-year-old Aroob leading an inspiring fundraising mission to thank Sheffield Children’s Outpatients for the care she continues to receive and to honour the memory of her younger brother, Ayaan.

From supporting the famous snowflakes to encouraging as many people as possible to get involved in the charity’s Moon and Stars display, the Rashid family have dedicated their time to fundraising for a cause close to their hearts.

Aroob has received care at Sheffield Children’s for most of her life, having been referred to specialists at just six months old. Living with a rare genetic condition that requires 24/7 care, she regularly visits expert outpatient clinicians across departments including Clinical Genetics, Gastroenterology, Respiratory, and the Ryegate Centre.

After Aroob’s younger brother, Ayaan, was diagnosed with the same condition, the family’s visits to Sheffield Children’s increased further. Throughout this time, Aroob continued to receive consistent support from her outpatient teams.

Despite her severe disability, Aroob has been determined to support Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity’s Moon and Stars campaign as much as possible. By spreading the word to businesses, mosques, community groups, the Lord Mayor, and even taking her message to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and the Houses of Parliament in London, she hopes to help raise vital funds that will benefit children across the region and beyond.

The Moon and Stars campaign celebrates Ramadan, a time of reflection and community, while raising money to support the thousands of patients and families at Sheffield Children’s, by funding the lifechanging and the joy-sparking. Last year, over £20,000 was pledged, making a meaningful difference to young patients and their families.

Supporters can choose to gift a tag or a shining star

as part of the Moon and Stars display at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital entrance, with all funds helping the charity enhance patient experiences and provide added comforts across services.

In October, Aroob was awarded the Helping Others Award at this year’s Sheffield Youth Awards and was a runner-up for the Culture and Heritage Award, recognising her determination and resilience in campaigning for good, even while managing her own complex needs.

Having experienced outpatient care for many years, Aroob’s father, Haroon, understands the importance of fundraising and has seen the difference community support can make.

Haroon said: “The support and care we have received from outpatient clinicians at Sheffield Children’s has been outstanding. Without their dedication, Aroob’s life would be very different. As a parent, nothing is more important than knowing your child is cared for by people who genuinely go above and beyond.”

“We are incredibly proud of Aroob. Despite facing more in her young life than most people would in a lifetime, she wakes up every day determined to make the world better for children with additional needs – to belong, to be cherished, and to be treated equally.”

“Aroob continues to dedicate everything she does to honouring her younger brother Ayaan’s memory, turning loss into purpose, and inspiring others to see that disability should never mean invisibility.”

Aroob’s journey is also a tribute to her beloved brother, Ayaan, whose memory fuels her determination to spread inclusion, compassion and joy. Through heartbreak, she has built something extraordinary – a movement of kindness that continues to inspire footballers, cricketers, ministers and communities across Sheffield and beyond.

But with the winter energy price cap sitting at around £1,755 for a typical household, a 2% rise on last quarter, lots of families will be thinking twice before dialling up the thermostat.

Good news - there are many ways to keep toasty without raising your bills.

Experts share nine cheap ways to keep your home warm without using energy this winter. Using these tips could double the heat retention in your home without spending a penny more on energy bills. Now is the time to prepare for the colder months.

Add loft insulation - save £380 per year Loft space is often overlooked. Uninsulated lofts can lose 25% of your home’s heat through the roof, making your boiler work harder to top up lost heat. Go into your loft space and check how thick the insulation is. Recommended blanket-style insulation is between 250mm and 270mm depth. The type of roof your home has will play a part in how difficult it is to insulate. Pitched roofs are easiest. Flat and dormer roofs are more difficult to insulate. Loft insulation for a detached house costs an average of £1,206. Loft insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve energy efficiency and pays for itself in around three years, based on the typical costs of installation and yearly savings. Some UK households are eligible for free or cheaper insulation through government schemes.

Insulate windows reduce heat loss by 50% Older houses tend to have draughty windows.

To keep the heat from escaping, use a window insulator, which you can find at hardware shops.

Properly insulating your home by sealing air leaks can save up to 20% on your energy bill. To find draughts and air leaks, light a candle and walk through your home, going along the walls where any draughts may be entering your home.

Once the candle begins to flicker, you have likely found a draught in your home.

Use thermal curtains -

reduce heat loss Thermal curtains work by trapping the cold air between your window and the curtain, preventing heat loss by blocking draughts from entering the home and improving energy efficiency. Reduces heat loss by up to 25%.

Curtains must be closed to stay effective. When it’s sunny, open your curtains to warm up your room.

Close the curtains as the sun goes away to retain the heat. Researchers from the University of Salford say that drawing your curtains at sunset can reduce heat loss by around 15-17%. You can pick them up for a fairly low price.

Draught-proof doors reduce heat loss by 25% External doors are a leading cause of heat loss, losing around 25% of the home’s heat through cracks and gaps due to draughts. The most common causes of draught are from letter boxes, pet doors, and door frames. Use draught-excluding tape to seal the cracks and air leaks between your windows and doors for a cost-effective way to draught-proof your home. Check if any internal doors are contributing to heat loss and place a draught excluder to seal the gap. A DIY solution can be made from rolledup towels or blankets.

Every little bit of protection helps; check your letter box seals, weatherstripping, and keyhole covers for cold air leaks. These can be fixed cheaply.

Lay a rug - reduce heat loss up to 20% A simple rug can keep your feet warm in winter. Its effectiveness will depend on the material, pile, and weight. Rearrange your furniture - save 10% on bills Furniture placement can help or hinder your home’s heat efficiency.

Keep furniture away from radiators to let warm air move around the room. Any large furniture such as beds, sofas, or wardrobes should be at least one foot away from radiators. This can save you up to 10% on bills.

If your bed is next to an external wall, rearranging your room so your bed is against an internal

wall will help you stay warmer. Glass is poor at insulating rooms. If your bed is close to a window or external wall, rearranging your furniture so that your bed is away from windows and next to internal walls can be a cost-free way of staying warm at night.

Keep clothing off radiators Drying wet clothes on a radiator can cause mould, create health risks, prevent heat from circulating, and make your boiler work harder. This can cost you a huge amount of money on your energy bills. Hang clothes on a dedicated clothes dryer or towel rail placed by a window. The heat from the sun will dry your clothes, and radiators will remain efficient.

Bleed radiators Air can collect in the radiator, preventing hot water from circulating and heating up the home properly, costing you energy and money. If you’re wondering how to bleed a radiator, all you need is a radiator key, an old cloth to hold the key with, and a jug to catch any droplets of water that may leak. If you don’t have a key, they can be quite cheap.

Screwfix sells one for just 97p. To tell if a radiator needs bleeding, feel it when turned on. If the unit feels hotter in some places than others, it means your radiator needs bleeding. Once you have identified which radiators need bleeding, turn the heating off and make sure they are fully cold before you begin. Finally, identify the valve, usually on the side of the radiator. Insert the radiator key and turn counterclockwise.

You should hear the air hiss, and when you see water escape, shut the valve. Once the air is bled, your radiator can heat up correctly, which improves energy efficiency. Anyone with a combi boiler will need to re-pressurise it afterwards.

South Yorkshire has reached a major milestone in digital connectivity, with 95% of homes and businesses in the region now able to access gigabitcapable broadband. The achievement surpasses the target set in the South Yorkshire Digital Infrastructure Strategy which aimed for 95% coverage by the end of 2025. By comparison, across the UK just under 90% of premises have access to the fastest internet available.

Gigabit-capable broadband offers download speeds of around 1,000 megabits per second which means quicker streaming, smoother video calls, and the ability to use multiple devices without slowing down; essential for modern life and business.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said: “Getting online and staying connected isn’t a luxury; it’s vital. Whether we’re working from home, running a business or getting online for a doctor’s appointment, we all rely on a decent internet connection.

That’s why we’ve been working to fix it. To get more people across South Yorkshire access to the fastest internet there is. ” This level of connectivity brings significant economic benefits to the region; supporting residents to work and build skills online, while making South Yorkshire an attractive location for businesses to invest and grow.

Most of the rollout has been delivered by commercial broadband providers responding to strong local demand.

South Yorkshire Digital Infrastructure Team (SYDIT) has worked behind the scenes to make this possible; championing areas where broadband is known to be slow or unreliable and helping providers overcome barriers, securing permissions, and coordinating with local authorities.

Hard-to-reach areas have been supported through the Government’s Project Gigabit programme which subsidises the cost of building gigabitcapable broadband to areas that would not be reached by commercial build due to the costs.

protect dementia patients With many parts of the UK facing a dramatic drop in temperatures, Alzheimer’s Society warns that this cold snap could be challenging for almost one million people living with dementia across the UK. According to Alzheimer’s Society, a charity dedicating to providing help and hope to everyone affected by dementia, very cold weather can be particularly challenging for someone living with the condition. Colder temperatures can be difficult for a person with dementia to adjust to, and they may not always be able to communicate that they are cold – or they may not even recognise it themselves.

The charity is urging people to check in on loved ones, friends and neighbours living with dementia and has shared seven useful tips to help support somebody living with dementia in cold weather: 1. Make sure the person is dressed appropriately.

Layers are key to keeping warm, and the best materials for maintaining body heat are cotton, wool, or fleecy fibres.

If you’re going outside, remember that a lot of heat is lost through the head and neck, so make sure the person has a hat and scarf on. Gloves are also important for keeping hands warm.

If it’s icy or snowy, make sure the person is wearing appropriate footwear, such as non-

skid boots.

2. Keep the room warm.

As well as turning the heating on, things like draught-proofing, thermal curtains and roof insulation can help maintain a consistent temperature. Try to make sure any rooms that are occupied during the day are kept warm – it’s a good idea to aim for around 20 degrees Celsius It’s also worth keeping a blanket within easy reach of a person with dementia, so they can grab it if they’re feeling chilly. At night, a hot water bottle or electric blanket can help keep the bed warm.

3. Encourage regular movement.

Keeping active can help to boost circulation and help keep someone with dementia warm. Simply getting the person to move their arms and legs or wiggling their toes can be helpful.

4. Make the most of natural daylight.

Decreased sunlight can cause someone with dementia to feel increased anxiety, confusion, and even depression during the winter. Get outside when you can – a quick walk around the block or even just sitting outside in the garden for a few minutes can do wonders. At home, make sure curtains are open during the day to let in as much light as possible. You could also position the furniture so that the person with dementia is sitting near

5. Stick to a routine.

A big change in routine can cause someone with dementia to become confused, distressed or agitated. If you do have to make changes to someone’s routine in winter – for example, changing nap times or daily walks due to limited daylight – try to do them slowly and gradually.

6. Be careful in icy weather.

Perception issues can make it difficult for someone with dementia to see icy patches on a pavement or understand that a surface may be extra slippery. If you’re out for a walk in icy or snowy conditions, make sure you’re supporting the person with dementia carefully. Encourage them to take smaller steps and walk more slowly than usual.

7. Eat and drink regularly.

Keeping warm uses up a lot of energy, and wearing layers and being in a warm house can increase the risk of dehydration. It’s important to make sure someone with dementia is eating regular meals and drinking enough fluid during the winter.

Some people with dementia have trouble gauging temperatures of food and drink, so try to make sure any food or drink has cooled before giving it to them. Angelo Makriof the Alzheimer’s Society said: “There are currently around one million people in the UK with dementia, and for many families caring for a loved one with the condition, winter can be a worrying time. Knowing how to best support someone with dementia during the challenging colder months, by regularly checking in with them and following these useful tips, can help to make sure they are comfortable, safe and able to stay as independent as possible.

This can also give carers important peace of mind. We want everyone affected by dementia to know that whoever you are, whatever you’re going through, you can turn to Alzheimer’s Society for practical advice, emotional support, and guidance for the best next step.”

LEGENDARY CHUCKLE BROTHER RECEiVES NEW YEAR HONOUR Rotherham legend Paul Elliott, famously part of the Chuckle Brothers comedy duo, has described discovering he is to be awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list as “probably the best shock” of his life.

Alongside his brother Barry, Paul was a familiar face on British television through their hit series ChuckleVision, which ran nearly 300 episodes during the 1990s and 2000s.

The show featured the duo as lovable, accident-prone brothers constantly causing chaos, often muttering “To me, to you.”

Since Barry’s passing from bone cancer at age 73 in 2018, Paul has channeled his energy into charitable work.

He has been a dedicated supporter and ambassador for Marie Curie, a charity whose

nurses cared for Barry in his final days.

Paul has previously spoken about the “incredible care and kindness” provided by the Marie Curie team.

Now 78, Paul is being honored as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his charitable contributions, having served as an official ambassador for Marie Curie since October 2016.

He told the Press Association: “It’s absolutely brilliant. It’s such an honour, a lad from a council estate in Rotherham, and after all these years, getting an MBE is just such an honour. I’m very much a royalist.”

He recounted how he first learned about Marie Curie: “I saw an advert on TV, and I tweeted (now X) that if everyone who followed me paid just £1 to Marie Curie, it’d be a lot of money—£50,000.

Marie Curie got in touch with me, and it’s gone from there.”

Paul described receiving the letter about his MBE as “just such a surprise,” adding, “It was a wonderful feeling, absolutely wonderful—getting that Member of the Order of the British Empire.

Really exciting.”

He has only shared the news with his wife, Sue, and reflected on the upcoming ceremony: “I don’t know where it’ll be— Windsor or Buckingham Palace or somewhere else. It’s just a wonderful thought. I’m getting tingles just thinking about it.”

He also expressed gratitude: “A big thank you to Marie Curie for putting me forward for this.

It’s such a shock, a wonderful one—probably the best shock I’ve ever had in my life.”

A young team giving everything Robinson ‘won’t wait six months to play’ - McCann Henrik Pedersen praised the strength of his young side following the Owls’ defeat to QPR in the capital.

After conceding early in London, Wednesday regrouped against the R’s to produce a more solid display, but two late strikes by Rayan Kolli confirmed victory for Julien Stephan’s side.

Pedersen said: “I think we had a difficult beginning of the game, where they were more dominant than us.

“I think from the beginning of the second half, the boys played much more brave on the ball. They made many more brave movements behind the opponent.

“Going into the 81st minute, when they scored for 2-0, I think it was a very equal game, and especially in the second half we can be proud, because this is what we want to see more of.

“I think we had three senior players in the starting 11 today, but how the young guys are doing is much more than

what we can expect from them.

“I think they do it really, really well and the boys gave everything again today.”

The QPR clash rounded off the busy festive fixture schedule, which has seen four games in 10 days, and the Owls boss was appreciative of the support from the travelling Wednesdayites.

He added: “We show our appreciation for this fantastic support they are doing again and again and again.

“It means everything in a difficult period, that you can feel we are one club.

“We stay together and we have to keep on going with this, and we will do everything so they can be proud of us on the pitch.”

Grant McCann has no doubts that new boy Darren Robinson will not be content with being seen as a player for the future at Rovers.

The 21-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with the club after switching from Derby County and has been eyed as a player who can drive Rovers forward in the years to come.

But McCann says early conversations with the midfielder revealed his intent to impact the team immediately - which is

music to the manager’s ears.

“We put him on a twoand-a-half year contract because we want him to learn, develop and grow with us,” McCann said.

“But one thing about Darren, and he made that clear to me, is that he’s not coming here to wait six months to get in the team. He wants to push now and I have no doubt he’ll do that because we’ve already seen in training how he handles himself and how he is around the group.

“He’s a confident lad, but

with a good confidence about him - not arrogance. Even when he came in to train with us, he was around the boys, he was talking. He wasn’t quiet and sitting in the corner on his own.

“He’s from a tough background back home, where he’s from so he’s got an edge about him and I like that.

“I just like the way he can handle the ball, manipulate the ball with left foot and right foot. He can shoot, he can arrive in the box. He’s very much a player that I like.”

The Government is considering changes to the planning system that could significantly weaken protections for grassroots football pitches.

As part of a national consultation, proposals are being explored that would remove Sport England as a statutory consultee on planning applications affecting playing fields. Sheffield & Hallamshire FA are urging

everyone involved in grassroots football to take part and make their voice heard.

The consultation — which is open until 13th January 2026 — could have long-term implications for the future of football facilities across Sheffield and Hallamshire if these changes are introduced.

If the proposed planning reforms come into force, protections for playing fields would be significantly reduced.

This could have a detrimental impact on the availability and quality of grassroots football pitches, particularly at a time when participation continues to grow and demand for facilities is increasing.

Sport England’s role as a statutory consultee provides vital, expert

insight into how planning decisions affect local playing fields and grassroots football provision. Working alongside national partners such as The FA and the Football Foundation, County FAs rely on this expertise to support participation, improve pitch quality and plan strategically for facilities across our communities.

Before Sport England became a statutory consultee in 1996, more than 10,000 playing fields were lost to development. Crucially, Sport England is not a barrier to development — it responds to over 99% of consultations within the 21-day period and objects to just 0.001% of the approximately 360,000 planning applications
