Welcome

Welcome to SLATE, The London Film School’s celebration of the creative endeavours of our emerging filmmakers from across the world.

\ /

\ /

\ /

\ /

\ /

\ /

\ /

\ /

\ /

Congratulations to all of our graduates and their successes. We preview here the narrative and documentary shorts that are the results of an intense cinematic journey. The approach we take here is based on learning through practice. In the MA Filmmaking course, this means learning all aspects of the filmmaking process, which ultimately endows students with a deeper understanding of what it takes to execute a vision. For our screenwriters, their journey is about developing their story worlds, taking us on imaginative journeys. They leave having written a full-length feature script, and ready to take on the challenges of making those stories come alive on screen. Congratulations also to our second cohort of graduates from our MA program in International Film Business. Your journey has taken you into the worlds of film finance, global co-productions and the challenges and opportunities offered by new platforms.

The screen and creative industries are changing at a fast rate. There are challenges, but many opportunities too. Our programs prepare graduates for this new exciting environment - the diverse business models that cut across disciplines to allow new creative partnerships, more platforms for distribution, emerging technologies that facilitate different modes of engagement – this is the new world. It may be a new world but some things haven’t changed. These new opportunities need graduates with finely tuned craft skills – experts in all aspects of storytelling. Our graduates are approaching this new world with one question. How can we use these varied channels to tell the most original and creative stories, in ways that connect with local and global audiences. Here’s another thing that hasn’t changed. LFS graduates are out in the world telling great stories, making a difference and having a big impact. We look forward to seeing you all make your mark on the industry. Good Luck! A Message from our Chairman \ /

\ /

Welcome to another celebration of emerging filmmakers from LFS. Once again, we celebrate an exciting year at the school! In 2016, student films have been shot across the globe such as India, Iran, Norway, USA, UK and Ghana. LFS films have screened at over 230 festivals and won over 30 prizes; at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, IN THE HILLS, written and directed by Hamid Ahmadi and produced by Harry Baker, won the Cinéfondation Second Prize. LFS alumni success continues too, LFS MA Screenwriting alumnus Benjamin Cleary won an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short for his film ‘Stutterer’ which he both wrote and directed.

2016 is also the start of an exciting new era for the School. We are on our journey towards our new home at London City Island. Late next year we will move onto the Island, and into our Nicholas Hare designed School. Not just a new building, but a new vision for LFS that will take us into the future. We’ll be joining the English National Ballet and The ENB School there and we already have plans to work with them. Thanks to our developers EcoWorld Ballymore, and funders, for their vision and support. Every filmmaker will see in graduation their first step along an individual path towards a working life in film. On your behalf, I want to thank our staff at LFS for their imagination, passion for cinema and their tireless commitment. We are all committed to creating the best environment for learning, and teaching so that you can reach your fullest potential. As we head towards our new destination, please do join us on our journey and continue to support us in whatever way you can. Come and help us make the next chapter a success. Bring a spirit of discovery, an open mind – and where possible a cheque book.

The MA in Filmmaking at The London Film School is deeply committed to fostering informed filmmakers, skilled storytellers, socially aware individuals, and compassionate global citizens, who valiantly investigate and portray the complex sides of the human condition through the art of filmmaking. The School has a strong emphasis on creative practice, as well as fearless and critical thinking that respects and builds on the past, but never allows it to restrain or limit the demand and expectations of contemporary storytelling. Creating a generative and safe learning environment, where no idea is silly and no question is naive, is a pivotal element in our teaching and academic leadership role in filmmaking. It is a privileged position; sharing with others what one loves. We therefore encourage students to bring their differences, ideas and critical thinking to class, and refine them through copious exchanges of questions and debates, that ultimately lead to wellcrafted and powerful films where the story is everything. This is evident in all the exceptional and outstanding student work that is produced at The London Film School this year. Stories from around the world are at the centre of an enquiry enamoured with hues of love, commitment, empathy, miscommunication, isolation, betrayal, and mundane dilemmas.

MARZIYEH Dornaz Hajiha

These stories unfold against an exciting backdrop of a multicultural, cosmopolitan and sophisticated modern day world. They represent the experiences and perspectives of a new generation of storytellers of whom we are proud and feel privileged to have nurtured and prepared for a successful career. Stories serve to capture memories and allow for a gateway to look deeper into ourselves. In other words, stories are equipment for living1 as they inform us of who we are. Story and storytelling nurture and enrich our senses in search of identity.

HACIA EL SOL (TOWARDS THE SUN) Monica Santis

As the academic Brian Boyd suggests2, I believe story and storytelling is essential to the survival of our species. Story is the pillar of the human existence, and the human experience: “In the end, we all become stories.”3

A sense of new discovery led Andrew to many differing countries both as traveller and citizen after graduating from a BA in Film & Philosophy. Varied experiences have enabled him to work in numerous contexts over the last several years. From production companies and films in New York (SMUGGLER, RESTLESS CITY) to features and television in Australia (VAN DIEMEN’S LAND, INTO THE SHADOWS, MASTERCHEF).

Mark Kuczewski graduated from film production at Staffordshire University in 2010. Before he came to the LFS he spent time working as a freelance Cinematographer. He worked in-house shooting, directing and editing for Fuzzy Duck. He also worked at Big Talk Productions who are responsible for great films such as SHAUN OF THE DEAD, ATTACK THE BLOCK and SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD.

In 2013 he moved to London to complete an MA Filmmaking at The London Film School, several of his films garnering international recognition at film festivals. As a Writer and Director Andrew draws his prime inspiration from landscape and place. \ /

Andrea Niada

Jorge Ojeda-Davila

I was born in Milan, moved to London at two years old and have been based in the UK ever since. After graduating with a BA in Theatre & Performance from the University of Warwick, I was accepted on the Masters in Filmmaking programme of The London Film School. My mid-course documentary HOW WE ARE NOW is currently on the festival circuit along with WASTEWORLD, a short psychological horror set in a world made of bin bags and my graduation film HOME EDUCATION, a darkly comic psychological thriller set in the English countryside.

In 2011 his short film MAKING ART was exhibited at the New Gallery London; his short film A MISSED CONNECTION was part of the Official Competition of the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), and broadcasted nationwide on Conaculta’s TV channel Canal 22. The Mexican National Council for Culture and the Arts awarded him the prestigious FONCA Scholarship, 2011. In 2012 his short film HEART OF GOLD was selected in competition at the FICM 2012. The Mexican National Council for Science and Technology together with the National Institute of Fine Arts, awarded him the prestigious CONACYT grant in 2015. In 2016, his short film THE BURNING has been selected for Oaxaca International Film Festival, Morelia International Film Festival, Post Mortem FilmFest, and Feratum Film Fest where it obtained a Special Mention of the Jury, as well as Tribe16 Arts Festival in London.

Solange Plaza

Natashja Rathore

Owczarek, was born and raised in Poland. Her BA graduating project in digital photography stirred a heated discussion regarding a fine line between the photography and moving images at Fine Arts Academy in Gdansk. It seemed only natural to keep the motion and move to filmmaking. After successfully applying to The London Film School and completing several projects she became confident to pursue a career as a Writer/Director. She's in the process of preparing her first feature length movie.

Solange Plaza recently graduated from The London Film School with her Masters in Filmmaking specialising in directing. She has worked in the television industry in Trinidad and Tobago for over three years, ranging from producing and script writing to camera and editing.

Born in Singapore and raised in Mumbai, Rathore has not only lived in and understood the culture and work ethos of the East and West, but has also an extensive network of creative collaborators spanning the globe.

Although she has spent 6 years studying to be a Director and Cinematographer, she is adept at the various aspects of production, long and short formats, festivals and international markets. Her competence lies in creating things that stand out from the crowd and make the seemingly impossible things happen. She strongly believes that it is not only about how well you create, but how well you sell what you create. She also runs Aganpakhee, a theatre company in Delhi and INQLab, a creative agency in Mumbai. \ /

Injury Time

Sofia is a Writer, Director and Producer. Born and raised in Saint-Petersburg, Sofia studied arts and film theory at the university, earning her BA in Arts in 2009. Being in love with French pastries and films she moved to Paris, but quickly realised that her Eastern European accent stands in the way of becoming a true French. So she took a train to London, where she settled down for a few years and obtained her Masters in Screenwriting and Filmmaking from the London Film School. During her time at The London Film School she developed a few short-lived crushes, life-long friendships, unexplained love for snow effects and caffeine addiction. Currently, Sofia is working on her first feature film Marble, which may or may not have Eva Green attached to the project… Boom!

“I’ve pursued a career in psychology and business for nearly 30 years. I felt that the film world was an exclusive club, closed to me. In 2012 everything changed. I was part of Danny Boyle’s Olympics Opening Ceremony and a volunteer in an immersive theatre group – You Me Bum Bum Train. Both taught me that you don’t have to be extraordinary to do something extraordinary. I applied to The London Film School. It has been utterly life changing.”

Weckstein’s motto is ‘nothing is impossible’, and his distinctive style and expertise challenges the audience expectations. It is in Weckstein’s nature to make it happen and his wellspring of talent will stop at nothing in dazzling audiences. Weckstein was the first to film monumental locations never before seen on film. His style forces the audience to re-examine their way of perceiving imagery, sound and time. The Masters in Screenwriting at The London Film School is an intensive one-year programme with the focus on developing the Writer’s voice in the context of a world class film school where we make 180 films each year.

The MAS programme continues to flourish with graduates gaining four feature credits this year and working across the film, television and media value chain in development, production, publication and education – writing for theatre, television, animation, web series, graphic novels as well as comedy, shorts and features. This is a course of rigorous study where students practice and learn transferable skills of analysis, collaboration and storytelling. As we know it takes time, tenacity and talent to develop a career as a screenwriter. This is the twelfth year of the MAS programme at LFS and many graduates are now working professionally across the industry in development, production and on their own projects in UK based companies as diverse as Tiger Aspect, Sky, BBC Digital, Kudos, Lionsgate, Channel 4, the Bureau and Working Title. Our grads also work internationally. Jada Nation (2015) is based in Los Angeles where she has recently signed with Anonymous Content, the management/production company responsible for True Detective, Mr. Robot and Spotlight and has several TV and feature projects in development including withh Max Borensteins new production company. Vietnamese graduate Mai Chi (2016) is finishing her first feature produced by Dreamtime Productions in Vietnam – Mad As Life directed by Huy Khac Nguyen. Her MAS colleague Phoenix Vu (2014) was recently nominated for Best First Feature and won Best Actors & Best Actress at the Blue Star Festival – with his romantic comedy Zodiac 12. He has also just signed a three picture deal with top Saigon production house Galaxy M+E. American grad Kelly Dobitz (2015) won Silver with Magna Carta at The New York Festival Radio Awards for Best Drama Special. Her LFS mentor was script editor on the project.

Meanwhile UK Writer James Ruzicka (2007) wrote the screenplay for MAF graduate’s Anu Menon’s recent feature shot in India titled Waiting. He returned to LFS earlier in the year for a screening and Q+A with the Director. UK Writers have been doing well this year with Chris Andrews (2012) awarded Creative England Development Funding for his British Western Scuttler and his collaboration with Film London producer Tessa Inkelaar on the rural thriller Shepherd. He is now represented by Jack Thomas at Independent Talent. Adam Dewar (2006) one of our first grads is also with ITA and earlier in the year wrote the Instagram thriller Shield 5 which was honoured at the 2016 Webbys Long Form Drama Series category (the Oscars of the internet) winning Best Writing and Critics Choice Awards at Raindance. The series was hailed as groundbreaking and played at prestigious festivals in UK (Raindance, ComiCon) France (Series Series), Germany (Seriencampen), Holland and the US (NAB). He is currently developing two feature projects with up and coming production company Cry Baby. Theo Krekis’s (2015) feature screenplay, SIFT, which he wrote during his time at LFS, was shortlisted for the BBC Writer's Room, and earned him a Script-Editor who is now assisting him with his second feature screenplay, OUR SKIN OF GRIME. Theo has recently adapted IMPAC winning author, Kevin Barry's short story, entitled THE MAINLAND CAMPAIGN, which is going into production in early 2017.Theo's short film, BREATHE, was selected as one of the BFI's Five Films For Freedom, won the ICCL Human Rights Film Award as well as competing in the official selection for Palm Springs, Aesthetica and BFI Flare. Kefi Chadwick (2012) has had a busy year with her short film Sexlife nominated on Vimeo as short of the week and is now in discussions about adapting it as a TV series. She is already being funded by Creative England and the BFI to adapt her play, Any Means Necessary, with Wellington Films attached and has joined the team on a Microwave project as a co Writer with the Director, Rene Pannevisso and will be working with Jennifer Eriksson and Jessie Mangum alongside BBC films, Film London and Creative England. She is developing two other features - Wild West Country, with producer Camille Gatin (The Girl With All the Gifts) and Director Isabelle Sieb (Three Women Waiting for Death, Encounters winner this year) and Southern Pacific with Alison Sterling at Ignition films.

Rupert Baynham

Darragh Carey

Laurie Doran (2012) who was selected for the Edinburgh Film Festival Talent Lab collaborated with LFS MAF grad on the micro-budget Tongues shot in Chicago this summer and now in post- while his Film London funded short Prevailing Winds has won awards at several festivals. Samuel Jefferson (2013) has a medic drama series in development with ITV studios titled Incision and has been commissioned by independent production company Sly Fox to write a crime thriller.

Having studied Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin for 4 years, Rupert Baynham made the decision to take up Screenwriting at the tender age of 22.

Darragh is the Irish word for both ‘oak tree’ and a Writer/Director based in London.

Ben Cleary (2011) an Irish Writer/Director who came on the course “to learn about storytelling before beginning to direct” won the Best Foreign Film at the LA Shorts festival for his short Stutterer which he quickly followed by winning an Oscar for the same film. While Dublin based Elizabeth O’Halloran (2008) wrote the screenplay for Edie – a film starring. Sheila Hancock and Kevin Guthrie produced by Cape Wrath Films - which is now in post.

Rupert has made films across the world including a mockumentary in Vietnam, a short film in Florence and in Biarritz and many more in London.

And most recently Jessica Romagnoli (2015) won the 2016 Great TV Show Idea Contest organized by Script Pipeline with the project she had developed on the MAS programme –while her contemporary Ottilie Wilford (2015) represented by Michael McCoy at Independent worked as a script editor on the first series of ITV’s Victoria – and has been promoted to Writer on the second series. Makalla Mcpherson (2016) directed her second block of BBC drama Doctors which will be airing later in the year - now informed by her year on the MA Screenwriting programme at LFS. She added: “The course equipped me with the tools to have a better understanding of script analysis, character journeys and story structure. I found that the theory and practice on the course, really helped me to direct the show with a new confidence and understanding.”

Rupert has worked regularly with the Oscar award nominated Cinematographer, Richard Greatrex, and is collaborating with the Producers Jane Frazer and Pete Czernin on his upcoming feature

So a glimpse of what some of our graduates have achieved this year. And we look forward to similar positive outcomes for the graduating year of 21016 as they prepare for the next step in their screenwriting and filmmaking journey. Brian Dunnigan Head of Screenwriting, MA Course Leader London Film School

Writer/Director

He has gone on to direct, write and act in short films - all of which are set to be released at film festivals in January 2017.

He is also in the process of writing a feature film (REPROBATE), which is due to be shot in the summer of 2017.

Joe’s Dance

WRITER/DIRECTOR, Canon C100, 10 min, Baynham Productions, 2017

The Holt

Whilst ageing, he accrued 10 years in advertising, specialising in writing for TV. His work has won over 40 creative awards and was shortlisted at the global Cannes advertising festival. He believes you can’t love a film that has no heart, and that plot is a waste of everybody’s time, effort, and even urine, without characters who live and breathe on the page and screen. He is developing a feature-length screenplay: MY AUNTIE THE CLOUD. When the bride vanishes from a rural Irish wedding, her recently returned emigrant sister investigates using a camcorder video, and uncovers hidden truths about her family and the hometown she has always despised.

Prior to The London Film School Giguere graduated from Emerson College in Boston for his B.A. in ‘Writing for TV and Film’ and was national runner up in the Rooftop Comedy National College Stand Up Competition. After that he worked in sports television for ESPN in the United States for 3 years as a Producer where he won an Emmy Award in 2013 for his work on the show ‘College Gameday’.

Clyde was born and raised in London. Having graduated in Philosophy he spent several years working in IT before developing a passion for screenwriting.

When I was seven, I met a homeless guy in the park occupying my favorite swing. He gave a contemptuous look and said, “if you want your swing back, fight me with your best story.” That’s how I became a Storywriter.

Mcpherson is an established Music Video Director for young urban artists. She has directed videos for Lisa Maffia, Wretch 32, Mumzy Stranger, Junai Kaden.

Her short films Tight Rope and Tiny Steps have been selected for a number of film festivals including the AAWIC Film Festival in New York, Portobello Film Festival.

Following that passion led Clyde to enrol at The London Film School where his graduation feature script was awarded a distinction in 2016. In addition to writing his own scripts, this time at The London Film School also saw Clyde acquire a love of working on other writers’ scripts.

At the School, his feature screenplay was titled "My Straight Best Friend", a bromantic road trip comedy across the American Southwest exploring gay/straight male friendship. Currently, Giguere is in production on a "cancer comedy" web series to raise money for cancer research with fellow cohorters Benjamin Dujardin and Mathilde Waignier. Laura Nucinkis

Joana Pereira

Alex Pogany

Alejandro Stepenberg

After graduating from the University of East Anglia with a BA (Hons) in Scriptwriting and Performance, Laura Nucinkis moved straight into post-graduate education by enrolling on the MA Screenwriting programme at The London Film School. Her previous work had mostly been in theatre - she production managed four extra-curricular productions at university, completed an internship at the Finborough Theatre which led to working as an Assistant Producer on two productions, and co-wrote a play about women at work in 1917 for the Third Year Drama Production module at UEA.

I'm a recent graduate of the MA Screenwriting program at The London Film School, previously receiving a Bachelors of Arts degree from Harvard University. I'm currently living and writing in London, working on a series of in development comedy pilots and feature length scripts.

Before moving to London to enrol onto the Screenwriting Masters programme at The London Film School, Joana worked as a Junior Writer at the Portuguese satirical news TV show INFERNO. She was the Writer and Presenter of a segment that aired weekly on the talk show LOVE SQUAD. For a year, she worked as a Production Assistant on several shows of the TV channel Canal Q. All of these experiences nurtured her creativity and supported her love of TV, film and writing.

My name is Alex Pogany. I’m a screenwriter from Budapest, Hungary; a recent graduate of the LFS MA Programme. My preference lies in future films, however, I’ve written and co-made tons of short films and I have a huge admiration for British, American and Scandinavian Television as well.

Alejandro Stepenberg holds an MA in Screenwriting from The London Film School and a BFA in Acting from the conservatorystyle actor training programme at the University of Utah, where his play PALE HORSES was one of four selected for the New Works development programme.

Child of military parents and a preacher’s daughter, I moved around a lot. A total of 14 schools and 22 different homes. I began writing in the third grade and I’ve been writing stories ever since. My stories vary across the board; I despise stories that sound the same. I love pushing the imagination to it’s limits. I don’t have favorites; I celebrate what moves my soul. I enjoy John Waters films as much as I enjoy Steven Spielberg. Most of what I write comes from my real life. So many oddities have happened to me that it seems the only way for anyone to believe me is to turn it into a film. I see myself as the CEO of my filmmaking career. I’m a writer, director, editor, producer, handle sound and act. All are equally important. Writing isn’t a passion; this is a gift that must be shared.

MA International Film Business The world class graduate degree that puts you right inside the international film business. The MA International Film Business unites The London Film School, the world’s key postgraduate filmmaking school, with the University of Exeter’s film department in the College of Humanities and the Business School. The partnership brings together unique film production and market expertise and exceptional research and teaching on film culture and history. This MA combines high level teaching skills with a unique practitioner-driven industry access program, providing students with the key business tools and contacts needed to build a career in film. The ambitious team behind the MAIFB is dedicated to training a new generation of both producers and executives that will bring both excellence and innovation into the international film industry. By analysing the horizontal and vertical structures that shape the film industry, in tandem with changing patterns of users and digital technology, this course explores both the existing international film industry while also embracing the current high levels of disruption and restructuring. Taught in London and the South-West, the MAIFB includes opportunities for industry networking; industry mentoring supported by an advisory committee of leading UK and European film industry professionals; a research trip to the Berlin Film Festival; and an opportunity to work on an LFS graduation film as a producer.

Kun Fang

More than a decade ago I moved to the UK to pursue my education and career in film and media. I have been living in London since and am happy to call it my second home. After trying different roles at different media companies I decided that freelancing is probably the most difficult, but nevertheless most enjoyable, way to make a living and have been doing it for several years now. I work as a freelance Production Co-ordinator and Assistant Producer and eventually I am hoping to start my own production company.

It was during my undergraduate programme, studying Arts Management at the University of Economics in Prague that I realised my childhood obsession in the world of films and books could one day become my future career. With this passion driving me, I threw myself into the industry, spending time on sets of Czech films as a Runner, volunteering at film festivals, exploring the magic of Hollywood at Film Production Summer School at the University of California Los Angeles and working as a Production Assistant in a Czech production company called Dramedy. The London Film School seemed like the next logical choice and here I am, a new graduate of the MA International Film Business degree. I am currently living in London, working at Lionsgate UK and still getting used to cycling on the left side of the road. Oh, and I am still very much obsessed with films and books.

I'm Kun from Beijing, China, an emerging Film Producer having studied the MA International Film Business (MAIFB) at both The London Film School and the University of Exeter.

Producer

I absolutely loved the Masters in Film Business course at The London Film School/Exeter University and can honestly say that I learnt heaps! Our class was fantastic and I met great people who became my close friends. The course was intense but really informative and it provided me with great insight into film business, which I am hoping to apply to my future producing career.

I used to be an entrepreneur, running my own media service company back in Beijing. The one-year experience of studying the MAIFB was absolutely meaningful and made me more professional, whilst becoming more confident obtaining access to the film industry and tackling all sorts of challenges. With the knowledge and networking attained during this year, I'm more capable of producing, financing, festivals, especially co-production within China as well as worldwide. From the perspective of a filmmaker, my personal aim is to produce my own project (either indie film or documentary) portraying my country and present the real China to wider audiences on an international platform.

Courtney Harmstone

Madeleine Jessell

Courtney Harmstone has been working professionally in film since she graduated with a BFA in Film Production (cum laude) from The Florida State University College of Motion Picture Arts. Since, Courtney has worked in a variety of positions in the film industry, from social media marketing to distribution, editing feature documentaries and to building Rube Goldberg machines on stage in Las Vegas.

I was born in Melbourne and grew up there for 7 years before moving to Toulouse where I spent the rest of my youth. I studied Media and Culture in Lille and during that time was granted the opportunity to work in production in LA and as a Community Manager in Paris. I then moved to Raleigh to complete my final year at NCSU where I majored in Communications with a minor in Film. There, I got involved with the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and became a jury member for the Campus MovieFest.

Producer

Since the completion of her dissertation in August of 2016, a documentary pitch project package, Courtney has worked on three projects, recently completing work on a feature length film, JELLYFISH, as a Production Manager. Courtney, during her time away from film, also works with fellow alumni of The London Film School, corunning a studio, Amotion, in Park Royal. Courtney’s longer term goal is to create and produce socially impactful documentaries and narrative films. \ /

Carmen Paddock

H. J. Leonard is an awesome film producer with expertise in production and distribution. His films has been showcased all over the Caribbean, Latin America, North America, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Leung’s path into the film industry took brief detour when she undertook her legal training and worked several years as a commercial lawyer in NZ and UK. Now with the Masters in International Film Business under her belt and a renewed passion for the film industry (and in particular film distribution) she’s aiming to break into the Irish film industry when she moves there next year. Let’s make this mid-life crisis pay off!

Carmen undertook the MA International Film Business degree with The London Film School / University of Exeter after her BA studies at Exeter, during which time she acted as Publicity Officer, Fundraising Coordinator, and finally President of Campus Cinema. Her enthusiasm for exhibition and distribution fuelled an interest in film business rather than filmmaking, and her final dissertation discusses the state of the independent film sales sector in light of Netflix’s and Amazon’s emergence.

Right now he’s working on a short documentary about the Puerto Rican diaspora in the United States in the decade of the 60’s and pre-producing a mini webseries which will make you laugh if you are into Star Trek, Lost in Space, Power Ranger, and campy Sci-fi films from the 60’s.

These experiences helped forge my desire to work around film festivals which is why I chose the Masters in International Film Business. In the UK I worked in festivals such as the Sheffield Doc/Fest and the East End Film Festival. I now work full time at Lionsgate and hope reorient myself towards festivals and exhibition in the near future.

“The short courses currently being offered by the London Film School are hot property…they fill a really important training gap, targeting already skilled filmmakers moving on and up.” John Whiston, Creative Director of Serial Drama, ITV Plans for 2017 include new workshops exploring the many facets of creative producing, new programmes focusing on transferable skills for content creators on platforms like YouTube, and expanding our summer programme with a cross platform development lab running alongside our popular directing summer schools

Summer Schools The LFS Workshops programme also features a series of popular directing summer schools; a series of popular directing summer schools, aimed at first-time filmmakers and more advanced directors alike. Jonas Grimås’ First Film Summer School offers newer directors a golden opportunity to undergo a tailored training programme focussed on practical filmmaking exercises, working with professional tutors, actors and crew, culminating in their own short film which they take away along with all of the materials they have shot. As well as Jonas, an awardwinning director of shorts and high-end TV projects himself, lead tutors this year included Mike Fox (cinematography), Roger Hyams (screenwriting) and Barrie Vince (editing). Dates for the 2017 edition of the First Film Summer School will be available on the LFS Workshops website soon. For more advanced filmmakers, Udayan Prasad’s Directing Summer School offers the pinnacle of filmmaking training, taking participants through a methodical series of practical exercises and encouraging directors to explore every aspect of the craft. Also working with professional crew and actors, across three weeks participants immerse themselves in the role of the director. Led by Udayan, a filmmaker whose feature films have opened Sundance and been selected for Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival, additional tutors in 2016 included Witold Stok (cinematography), Simon Block (screenwriting), Moira Tate (production design) and Barrie Vince (editing). Dates for the 2017 edition of the Directing Summer School will be available on the LFS Workshops website soon. In 2016 we also ran our first ever Documentary Summer School, with Zillah Bowes. Drawing on Zillah’s insight, creative nous and technical expertise, this 2-week programme gave nine filmmakers the chance to create their own documentary project with support throughout the process. Plans for future documentary summer schools will be announced soon. \ /

The Into Film & LFS Filmmaking Academy This year saw our first major outreach projects launching with a bang as we kicked off four intensive weeks of filmmaking training for 13-17 year olds, with support from Into Film. The Into Film & LFS Filmmaking Academy gave 50 young people from across London the chance to learn the entire filmmaking process in 7 days: developing story ideas, writing screenplays, shooting their films on a specifically designed set here at LFS, editing using our professional editing suites, and finally screening their films in the LFS cinema. We brought the group back together later in the year for a session focussed on taking their next steps towards a career in filmmaking, with input from industry professionals, Into Film and the BFI. We hope to run similar projects again in 2017 and details will be announced on our website. We’ve also run filmmaking workshops for disadvantaged young people around London, partnering with One Housing Group and others. We’ll be rolling out these workshops to schools and youth groups in 2017; if you are interested in working with us on outreach projects, please get in touch with the LFS OPEN team.

"Such a great experience for young people as it brings creative people together with different visions to make something unique." Daniiels, Participant Filmmaking Academy
