ON TOP OF THE WORLD Welcome to Somersault, The London Film School's celebration of the creative endeavours of our emerging filmmakers. Here we preview the narrative fiction and documentary shorts that are the result of an intense educational journey undertaken by filmmakers from across the globe. Through the language of cinema diverse political, social and cultural worlds are articulated and shared with audiences here in London, but globally too through various screenings and festivals.

This year’s impressive collection joins the work of our LFS associates around the globe, contributing to the ongoing story of LFS. During the past year, LFS films had around 200 festival entries, across 150 events, winning over 30 prizes, nominations or special mentions. The list spans Venice, Tribeca, Clermont Ferrand, The BFI London Film Festival, Palm Springs, Edinburgh, Encounters and Sundance. A particular highlight was the unprecedented success for LFS

THE SALT OF THE EARTH, directed by LFS graduate Juliano Ribeiro Salgado alongside Wim Wenders, was awarded the Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize. Other LFS graduates selected for Cannes sections were Panos H. Koutras's (XENIA in Un Certain Regard), Aygul Bakanova (VOID in Directors’ Fortnight) and Newton Aduaka (Cinefondation Atelier). To see emerging filmmakers coming together with graduates from previous decades was a wonderful expression of our philosophy “a tradition of innovation”.
A MESSAGE FROM MIKE LEIGH director Jane Roscoe, who has taken over the baton from outgoing director Ben Gibson, now at the Australian Film Television and Radio School. Jane has got off to an impressive flying start, forging new links and planning innovative projects.

In 2014, we lost an important member of the LFS community, Phil Mottram, alumnus, course tutor and administrator, who, for 40 years until his retirement in 2000, was a guiding light of the School, He died in May this year. The school is indebted to him.

Once again, we celebrate an exciting year at LFS – our 58th. In 2014, graduation films have been shot in Columbia, India, Turkey, Spain, Russia, Iran, Norway, Austria, Greece, Nigeria, Portugal, America and the UK; LFS films have screened at over 150 festivals and won over 30 prizes; alumni have had features premiered in Cannes, Venice, Edinburgh, Montreal, London and Abu Dhabi. It’s business as usual for an institution built on hard work, creative collaboration and passionate internationalism.
At the Cannes Film Festival, Simón Mesa Soto won the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film for his graduation film LEIDI. It is the first time a UK film school has won this prize. The award was presented by actress Li Yuchun and the director Abbas Kiarostami, President of the jury.

The internationalism of the school is reflected by the achievements of graduates across the globe. FAST FORWARD PRODUCING

In April, twelve aspiring producers succeeded in joining the 2014 Fast Forward Producing programme, supported by the Creative Skillset Film Fund. They spent three weeks on a intensive training course, learning from some of the most influential and experienced producers, production executives, lawyers, distributors, international sales agents and financiers in European filmmaking today. Our termly Q&A programme continued in 2014, feeding contemporary debate and new work into full time teaching and bringing external audiences into the school’s space and culture. The school welcomes events curated by external partners , and this year these included a panel discussion to launch the book ‘Educating Filmmakers’ by Duncan Petrie and Rod Stoneman. Course Director Emma Hayter, who has taught at several international and national film schools, describes FFP2014 as ‘a boot camp for the producers of tomorrow. I wanted to create a hothouse environment where the determination and ambition of the participants could be pushed to its limits’. The new producers selected were: Jenny Allenby, Linda Biney, Fiona Black, Mia Borrett, Chee-Lan Chan, Helen Grearson, Anna Jancso, Sam Mildner, Meriel Paisley, Usayd Younis, Zeena Zakaria and Francesco Zibellini. Anna Jancso was already an experienced documentary producer in Europe and South America before coming onto the FFP2014 programme. “I came in with a clear idea of what I wanted from the course. I wanted to make the transition from documentary to fiction producing and wanted to know how the UK film industry worked. Immediately after FFP2014, I produced Forgotten Man, a micro-budget feature written and directed by Arran Shearing. Because of the course, I could foresee many of the possible pitfalls. Just knowing what lay ahead allowed me to avoid problems, and confront challenges more confidently.”

The film may be micro-budget, but it has the potential to be seen all over the world. Because FFP2014 covers all aspects of production, from copyright to production management, I always knew who to go to, and where to go for advice and information. Now I have an excellent network of contacts, including the tutors and participants of FFP2014. And I am still using my notes as a practical ‘how to’ guide to the stages of production.”

LFS MA Filmmaking graduate Sam Mildner had already set up production company DOG BUTTON with fellow alumnus Jan Hillman, and developed their first feature Bitter Suite. ‘We knew it would be micro-budget, and had already planned our Kickstarter campaign. However, my FFP2014 mentor Andy Starke gave me vital insights into how independently-financed and produced movies need to define themselves in relation to their audience.’ (Andy has produced Ben Wheatley’s Down Terrace, Kill List, Sightseeers and A Field in England, and Peter Strickland’s The Duke of Burgundy). ‘Andy has sharpened my editorial attitude,’ continues Sam, ‘and developed my understanding of the market for low-budget movies’. Linda Biney has acquired the rights to a television series drama production based in Nigeria, which is intended to be co-produced with Nigerian and South African production companies. Her contacts and mentors from the course have been vital in helping her contract both creative and production talent, including legal representation introduced by Course Tutor Carlo Dusi.

I believe I can make it’ Anna Jancso, FFP2014 participant Fiona Black, who has an extensive record in TV drama production, has worked with her FFP contacts and mentors to steer Unsung into Microschool, the development phase of Film London’s ultra-competitive Microwave programme. ‘Emma helped me understand how to make films within the UK system. Bill Allan was a major influence in guiding me through the application process for Microwave. There’s a few more stages to go through before we get to production, but the experience of making my first application for funds has been invaluable.’ Unsung is written by Ayndrilla Singharay, and will be directed by LFS MA Filmmaking graduate Liam Creighton. Course director Emma Hayter has worked as a Producer, Executive Producer and Financier, and has produced more than twenty feature films and several long running high profile drama series for television. For some years Emma and Bill Allan worked together at Baker Street Media Finance, where Bill Allan was a director. With his background in international Sales and Finance, Bill contributed his knowledge and experience to FFP 2014, as well as mentoring Fiona after the Course concluded. Anna concludes, ‘I now have a good relationship with many agents, developed from the information and guidance I got on FFP2014. I have negotiated an option on a script with a major agency using all my acquired knowledge of negotiation. I am much more confident and active now in my career; I can talk with authority to financiers, distributors, agents, actors, facilities companies. I believe I can make it.’ Emma is working on the third Fast Forward Producing Course, a two-week programme which is scheduled for September 2015.

In September, LFS, supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the Mohamed S. Farsi Foundation, presented a 10-day intensive artists’ filmmaking workshop, led by the celebrated artist filmmakers Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard (20,000 DAYS ON EARTH).
Twelve participants were recruited through a competitive application process. They took part in an intensive schedule of workshops, seminars, screenings and networking opportunities, culminating in the production of twelve diverse films. Participants were Abigail Sidebotham, Andy
Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard said, “Right now is an exciting time to be an artist working with moving image. Genres are merging and boundaries are falling away. Culture is shifting. Technology too. It’s easier than ever to make films. But making a good one and then getting people to see it is incredibly tough. So we’re thrilled to have this opportunity to work closely with the London Film School, because their approach and ambition is bold. We’re excited to be developing a workshop that might help to inspire and open avenues for new generations of artist filmmakers.”
LFS @ APPLE STORE We continued the regular series of satellite events at The Apple Store Covent Garden, which launched last year. MA Filmmaking graduates led a number of sessions on such topics as running a production company (Henry Lloyd-Baker and Nikolaj Belzer of Everything is Okay), international co-production markets (Joanna Bence of Curb Denizen) and How to Get Your Film into Festivals (Ben Bee). Most recently, LFS Director Jane Roscoe led a packed session on the art of pitching. Ben Bee ran an Apple session ‘How to Get Your Film into Festivals’. His 4th term film STEP RIGHT UP (pictured) was selected for over 30 festivals and longlisted for a 2014 BAFTA.

MA International Film Business In September we were delighted to welcome our very first cohort of 29 students on The MA International Film Business, joining us from China, Brazil, Nigeria, India, Japan, France, USA, Thailand and the UK. The MAIFB unites LFS with the University of Exeter, bringing together unique film production and market expertise and exceptional research and teaching on film culture and history. Unlike existing film-related degrees, this new MA explores the entire film business, embracing world and national cinema(s), nonHollywood independent film production, financing, sales,
distribution and marketing, alongside programming, exhibition and digital strategies for the future. The ambitious team behind the MAIFB is dedicated to training a new generation of both producers and executives that will bring both excellence and innovation into the international film industry. By analyzing the horizontal and vertical structures that shape the film industry, in tandem with changing patterns of users and digital technology, the course explores both the existing international film industry while also embracing the current high levels of disruption and restructuring.
Taught in London and Exeter, the MAIFB includes opportunities for industry networking, mentoring, a research trip to the Berlin Film Festival and opportunities to work on an LFS graduation films as a producers. The MAIFB programme is codirected by Angus Finney for The London Film School and Professor Will Higbee at the University of Exeter, bringing in a range of industry experts as visiting lecturers, mentors and advisers. "LFS and Exeter are offering a compelling, focussed and
highly relevant course for future practitioners dedicated to a career in the international film business," said Angus Finney, former director of Renaissance Films, project manager of the Film London Production Finance Market, and author of The International Film Business: A Market Guide Beyond Hollywood, and a further four books on production, distribution and financing. "Our ambition is to consistently populate the sector with some of the brightest and most informed players who grasp both current market demands and capture future value." The MAIFB programme includes a field trip to the Berlin Film Festival.
European Projects In 2014 LFS was once again extremely active in Europe with training programmes, including continuing editions of The Low Budget Film Forum and Making Waves. LFS was also a consortium partner in training programmes led by other European Film Schools including: ◆ ADAPTING FOR CINEMA, based in Italy at the Scuola Holden in Turin, with MOME in Budapest as the third partner school. A unique training in adapting a novel for the screen, twelve books have been packaged by international teams of writers, producers and production designers. ◆ SERIAL EYES, led by dffb, Berlin. A 9-month training programme in Berlin and London for young television industry professionals, focused on serial drama writing and production with a specific emphasis on European markets. ◆ A CLEAR VIEW, led by dffb. A technical training in grading.

In parallel, directing and producing participants, recent graduates from top European film schools with their first features projects, go through an intensive week of conversations with leading practioners in the field from across Europe and also peer-to-peer sessions covering all aspects of this alchemic process.

In all these cases LFS gained the opportunity to recruit recent LFS graduates into specialist workshops with important and careerdefining networking opportunities. 2014 marks the end of the Initial Training Programme of the EU MEDIA fund. We are extremely proud of the work that has come out of these encounters and the international collaboration that has developed from participants from different film schools, leading to long standing working relationships and co-productions. We look ahead with excitement at the possibility of developing new and equally innovative and important training and networks for our graduates. Watch this space!

LOW BUDGET FILM FORUM

By bringing LBFF to Les Arcs, the teams participate in a professional European co-production market, and this year the Danish producing participants will offer their insight into the 8 projects, inspiring co-productions plans. In addition, with the launch of the Village de Musique this year, we are working with 4 young film composers who will add their musical ideas to the projects. A rich and intense summit. This year the Low Budget Film Forum VII case studies are first feature films made by graduates of the Low Budget Film Forum.
For the past 3 years the International team at LFS has been running the distribution and marketing lab, Making Waves, hands on training in 5 days, held at the dffb during the Berlinale. International Sales Agents provided 5 case study films screening at the festival. Creating distribution strategies, trailers and posters the teams brainstormed strategies for distribution.

The programme covers movies, TV drama, and documentary; it develops in response to changes in filmmaking practice, and changes in demand from participants. Graduation Films Graduation film projects are the culmination of two years of intensive study on the MA Filmmaking at The London Film School, during which students receive technical training in tandem with developing creative and production skills, and the study of film history, cultures and critical analysis. Students collaborate in the development, production and delivery of up to 180 films per year, according to strict briefs which increase in complexity from term to term. Silent black and white 16mm films are followed by shorts inspired by paintings in the National Gallery, then digital documentaries. Terms 4 and 5 feature studio-based dramas shot on 35mm or Arri Alexas.

The 6th term is devoted to the preparation of graduation films, and equipping students for industry-standard practice beyond their studies, and features a number of presentations by Visiting Lecturers who are specialists in their fields. Most students choose to graduate as writer-directors; others decide to specialize, for example, as director of photography, producer, editor, and work on a number of projects within the time-frame. Graduation film projects offer great freedom in terms of subject and method of production. They can be shot anywhere in the world, and are frequently crewed by a combination of LFS students and local professionals.

This results in an extraordinary range of stories and approaches, with a truly international perspective. An increasing number of students are also opting to work in non-fiction formats. This year films have shot in Columbia, India, Turkey, Spain, Russia, Iran, Norway, Austria, Greece, Nigeria, Portugal, USA, as well as the UK. They cover a fascinating range of subject matter and approaches - from contemporary comedies to period dramas, intimate character studies to ambitious projects featuring special effects. BAHADOR ADAB I was born on August 12th 1984 in Tehran, Iran. I became interested in film through screenplays and writing scripts. I started taking script workshops and working at Road Films as an intern, meanwhile doing small projects on my own. After building up a portfolio I applied to the LFS.
Ankit Arya was born in New Delhi, India. Currently, the young writer and director is based in Mumbai, India where he's working in advertising, corporate films, documentaries and feature films.

ALFONSO ARTUNDUAGA-CACERES Alfonso is an independent filmmaker. He selfshoots and post-produces most of his own documentaries and works collaboratively on fiction films. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Alfonso has a degree in Media Studies. He began working as a TV reporter for a local television station, before becoming a producer. His determination and knowledge led to him producing programs for national television, including pre-recorded short documentaries and live broadcasting in Venezuela and abroad. After several years working in television, Alfonso saw filmmaking as the natural next step in his career. He enrolled at the LFS in 2011 and obtained a postgraduate diploma. He’s passionate about films and is a creative and disciplined professional. Now based in London, Alfonso is still building on his experience, self-shooting his own documentaries. He also continues collaborating on short films. Alfonso sees digital cinema and new video technologies as a powerful tool for the further democratization of filmmaking.
Born and raised in Finland, Sebastian BarnerRasmussen studied Directing & Screenwriting at the Arcada University of Applied Sciences before gaining an in MA Filmmaking at the London Film School in 2014.
Before moving to Mumbai, Ankit worked in Delhi as an assistant director on several digital marketing campaigns for viral videos, advertisements, corporate films, medical documentaries and government funded documentaries. Ben is a 27-year-old, London born filmmaker, raised in Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Australia and Bath. His first stab at directing was a puppet show at the age of 11 that lasted so long as to require an intermission. It had dinosaurs.
After high school, I studied History as an undergraduate in Delhi. It was during this time that I realised my passion for directing films. I've also always wanted to act and was very active in Delhi's theatre circuit at the time. After directing a few plays, I chose to study Filmmaking. Before coming to London to study at the London Film School, I worked at a film production company in Mumbai as a production intern.
After graduating with a BA in Philosophy from Kings College London he spent a year freelancing, resulting in a nationally broadcast commercial that paid for his first term at the London Film School. His mid-course film Dinner and a Movie was selected for the Palm Springs, LSFF and Edinburgh Film Festival 2013, which named him a 'British Director of Tomorrow'.
The two years I spent in London studying at the London Film School made me look at the world from a very different point of view. At the moment I'm working in Delhi with a film production company as an Assistant Director.

ELSA BAUVERD Born in Geneva in 1989, Elsa Bauverd grew up in the French-speaking part of Switzerland in a half Spanish, half Austrian home. After a BA in Philosophy and Film at the University of Southampton, she was accepted into the London Film School in 2011. Her graduation film Osmonde was completed in April 2014 and has been selected to screen at the 2014 Austin Film Festival. Debashis 'Remy' Dalai was born in Paris, France and brought up between India, Europe and Africa. He attained his BA in Journalism and Mass Communication in India and it was here that he developed his interest in the visual aspects of filmmaking. He pursued his interest in the visual field by doing his Masters in Filmmaking at the London Film School where he concentrated on cinematography, whilst getting an overall education on film.
ALEXANDER BIRRELL Alexander was born in Liverpool and spent his childhood watching any and every film he possibly could. After studying Film at university, he moved to Italy (thanks to his passion for Italian cinema) and began to work in a variety of production roles. His work on a television series was followed by various music videos and short films and eventually led to work on two feature films. It was after this that he decided to return to the UK and was awarded a Creative Skillset Bursary enabling him to attend the London Film School. An avid fan of the suspense and thriller genres, Alex was mentored through the creation of his graduation film by director Martin McDonagh. ASTRID CARLEN HELMER Astrid Carlen-Helmer was born in 1988. She grew up in a city in the south of France, where she studied both film theory and literature before leaving for Los Angeles, where she got a taste of what making movies was like. NATHAN DEMING ASLAK DANBOLT Aslak Danbolt is from Bergen, Norway. He has two BA’s, one in Film Studies and one in Documentary Directing, both from Lillehammer University College. His graduation film Martin-the Ghost was selected for numerous international film festivals including IDFA, Thessaloniki and London, winning several awards. He has studied for an MA in Filmmaking at the London Film School since 2011. He is currently living in Oslo developing his graduation film Last Base into a feature.

Nathan Deming was born in Wisconsin, USA in 1989. He studied Creative Writing at Webster University in St. Louis, MO, before moving to the UK to join the London Film School in September 2011. His 5th term film Tongues - based on his own experiences in a mega church during college - played at several major European film festivals, including the London Short Film Festival and the Edinburgh International Film Festival and currently features on IndieFlix. In 2014, he finished his graduation film Dog Days, shot in Wisconsin and starring local actors. He's currently living and working in Los Angeles, CA, where he's developing his first feature film, Speaking in Tongues, to be shot in Chicago in 2015.

Jonathan grew up in the vapid suburbs of Southern California, about 30 minutes outside of Los Angeles. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Chapman University in 2010 with a degree in Theatre Directing and a Minor in Creative Writing. In 2011, searching for an international perspective on the film industry, he chose to attend The London Film School. He has directed and produced short films in both the United Kingdom and the US and also written & directed for the stage. He has never owned a dog, though he hopes to one day.
Jannicke was born in Norway and spent most of her life on an island outside Oslo. After trying out Media Studies for a year, she decided to move to England in 2008 to complete an BA Film Studies at Kingston University.
Recent films Liam produced have earned a 2013 Student Academy Award nomination (The Library of Burned Books) and won awards including Best of British at Encounters 2013 (Rosemary Jane).

John was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. Since receiving an optical illusions kit as a child, he has been fascinated by the influence of light and reflection on the human eye. He adapted a 1930’s radio play for the stage and directed the production and, while attending McGill University, he joined the McGill Film Society where his interest in film grew.
ALIÉNOR DUPLESSIS Aliénor was born in the Champagne region of France and later moved to Paris. She studied the Japanese language and Civilisation at the Institute of Oriental Languages (INALCO) and earned a Master's degree in American Civilisation from the Sorbonne University, with her dissertation on the representation of Japan in American cinema. After seeing a bit of the world, including Japan, Argentina and New York, Aliénor moved to London in May 2011 to attend the London Film School. There, she directed three short films including her graduation film I Don't Love You Anymore and developed a deep interest in sound. Having worked as a sound recordist and/or boom operator on many LFS graduation films, Aliénor now works as a freelance sound recordist and continues developing scripts that mix drama and supernatural elements.
Upon receiving his BA, John worked in media communications and later helped develop a communications system, which utilises a visual display technique. In 2011 his short film The Interview received an honourable mention at the LA Script and Film Festival and won at the Honolulu Film Awards. SOPHIA GOULANDRIS PAULINE GALTIÉ Pauline Galtié was born in Paris, 1986. After studying Humanities, Art and Film History and working as an assistant curator at Les Arts décoratifs, she decided to pursue her true passion of visual storytelling behind the camera and joined the London Film School in 2011. Throughout her MA Filmmaking, she put an emphasis on writing, directing and editing. In 2012, she wrote and directed Remain, selected at several festivals internationally. She is graduating with a concentration in editing and directing. Based in Paris, she's currently preparing her next short fiction piece as well as freelancing as an AD and editor on various projects.

I was born and raised in Mexico with an Icelandic background. After a BA in Film Studies in Paris, where I acquired critical and analytical skills, I enrolled at the London Film School. At LFS I specialized in cinematography but also thoroughly discovered all aspects of filmmaking and directed my graduation film, Deserts. I have worked on more than 25 productions in different roles, always learning something new and improving my understanding of what it is to create a film from the premise to the final product. I am always looking out for new ideas and exciting collaborations. Working with skilled filmmakers is always thrilling and fulfilling.

I don’t love you anymore, CAMERA OPERATOR, Mikel was awarded with the la Caixa Fellowship award to study at the LFS. During his studies, Mikel wrote and directed the documentary Txoria (The Bird) in collaboration with the Royal Ballet, which has been sold to be broadcasted by EITB. He also wrote Automatic Flesh, with choreography by the Rambert Dance Company, which premiered at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. He was commissioned to write and direct the commercial Chessmates, nominated at the PRIX Europa Broadcasting Festival. He is graduating from the LFS as a writer/director with the short film Foxes.

Emre was born and raised in Ankara, Turkey. After a BA in Law, he started to work within the film industry in various production roles, moving into cinematography and establishing himself as a cinematographer after following the traditional route up through the camera department. Since then he has worked in commercials, promo videos and various short films which have screened and won prizes at international film festivals.

I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria in a family that encouraged creative pursuits. Film had always been a particular passion because through it more than any other medium, I was easily transported to worlds I couldn't otherwise imagine and into the minds of people I wouldn't otherwise meet. For me, the best films have strong, concise stories (with great underlying subtext) and are character driven. The more I am drawn to a character and able to identify with them (without prejudice), the more I am ultimately able to learn about myself in relation to the broader world.

Following that he realized his dream of becoming a director and after his acceptance into the London Film School to complete his Masters studies, he moved to London. Since then he has made two shorts which have been screened at festivals around the globe. In September 2014, he received his MA Filmmaking (Distinction) with his graduation film The Translator.
Growing up in Ireland, stories and storytelling have always been present in my life. Knowing I was dyslexic from an early age I was determined to read all the more. When I discovered I didn’t think in the same way as others when it came to creativity my interest in narrative grew.

MARK KHALIFE Mark Khalife was born in Lebanon in 1986. In 2008 he graduated with a BA in audiovisual from Université Saint Joseph. Gaelle grew up in Singapore and London, where she attended the French Lycée, before leaving for College at Skidmore in Saratoga Springs, New York.
Christina is Moscow-born, Frankfurt-bred and grew up travelling the world. She is a filmmaker, graphic, 3D and production designer, a passionate historian and avid videogamer.
Yiannis studied Philosophy and Economics as well as Project Management, before he joined the LFS to study and practice film, specialising in cinematography and taking part in numerous short films as a member of the camera department.
As an undergraduate, she studied Art History and Spanish Literature and took as many film theory classes as she could. It was a combination of these Film Study and Art History classes that fed her curiosity for visual storytelling and led her to the LFS.
Since then he has been involved as a DoP and Steadicam operator in professional productions with his newly founded company Filmstead. The company was founded with the aim to grow as a cinematographer and enable himself and people sharing his passion for cinema to do what they love best and share stories through the creation of cinematic images.
Since then, she has worked on a number of short films both within the school and independently, working mainly as a director, editor and AD. She is graduating with a concentration in Directing and Editing and is now working as a freelancer on a number of exciting projects and preparing her next short fiction piece.

After studying Film, Media Science and Classical Archaeology at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and working for an international broadcasting channel, she decided to merge her passions and feed them into her love for visual storytelling.
Christina Ruloff studied History in Zurich. There she made educational documentaries answering questions such as “How does the cult of martyrs rise?” or “Why do people worship the Virgin Mary?” before rediscovering her old passion: storytelling. At the London Film School she focused on directing as well as cinematography, winning an award for her camerawork on England’s Lourdes, a documentary on Canvey Island.

ANTIGONE MITSIMPOUNA DAVAKI Antigone was born in Athens, Greece. Graduated from the School of Philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens as a historian, listening to stories.
JULIO MAS ALCARAZ Julio was born in Spain. He holds an BA in Economic and Business Science, a MBA and an MA in Arts. He has more than ten years experience in different management positions at several multinational companies. Apart from this, he has published five books, one of which was finalist for the National Book Award. He was also the founder and CEO of a software and 3D company, which he sold. He has lived in Chicago, Rio, New York and London as well as several cities in Spain. In 2011 he decided to study at the London Film School and in 2014, created his own production company. His intention is to create films that treat filmmaking as an art

FRANCISCO NEFFE Francisco was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1989. He started making films whilst studying a degree in Film & Television at the University Lusofona, Portugal. He worked for a major production company in Portugal where he had the opportunity to direct commercials and short films. Andreas Reksten was born in the western part of Norway in 1983. He grew up in several places around Norway before starting his studies at the University of Bergen in 2003. After three years he completed his bachelor studies in Film & TV Production and started working as a promo producer at Norway ́s largest commercial TV company TV 2 Norway. Here he produced, directed and edited promos in sports, news and entertainment for three years until starting the MA Filmmaking course at London Film School in 2010.
Carla Simón was born in a small Catalan village in 1986. Being part of an extensive family that is a bottomless pit of stories, she chose film to portray the complexity of the human condition and family relationships in particular.

She graduated in Audiovisual Communication in Barcelona after an exchange year at the University of California. She then enrolled in a MA TV Fiction course and directed the final pilot episode. Awarded with a la Caixa scholarship, she enrolled at the London Film School where she directed Born Positive and Lipstick, which both screened at numerous international film festivals. Las Pequeñas Cosas (Those Little Things) is her graduation film for which she received a Distinction. It was developed at the European Short Pitch and funded by the Catalan Institute ICEC.

TARA VERMA Tara Verma is a BAFTA nominated producer/editor who has worked on a number of award-winning short films, music videos, corporate videos and commercials. She has an extensive international network and her work has been showcased at a number of international festivals.
ANDI SINKOVICS I am a Hungarian filmmaker from Subotica (Serbia). I attended the University of East London's (UEL) Media, Film and Culture Studies course and received a BA honours degree in Media and Creative Industries. I then went on to work in the film industry as Producer’s Assistant and later Head of Development at Ant Media production company. On my first film project at Ant, What the Mind Forgets, I was an Associate Producer. In 2010, I joined the London Film School where I directed three fiction short films, one of which, Kyoto Rain, was screened at Palm Beach and Arizona Film Festivals. I also produced a few other shorts including a documentary for which I was co-director as well. In October 2014, I completed my graduation film at LFS titled A Lovely Life. I am currently developing a feature film based on my graduation short.
ALYSSA STRATTON Alyssa was born in Southern California in 1987. She received her BA in Film Studies and Theatre Production from the University of California, Irvine with one quarter completed abroad at Cambridge University, UK. There, she became deeply interested in British films, leading her straight to the London Film School for her Masters. She currently resides outside San Francisco, CA.
She is currently working between the UK and India and is cutting her first feature film in 2015. She has a unique style that represents a mix of the East and West and is interested in pursuing projects that have a strong cultural voice. DANIEL ZAFER Daniel Zafer was born and raised in London. His father was a photographer and he developed a fascination with capturing images of any description from a young age. His professional career started at ITV Productions as a runner where he progressed quickly to the camera department, shooting a variety of factual programmes. He then moved to the BBC where he shot documentaries for many years. Eventually going freelance, he continued to shoot for broadcast television whilst also filming a variety of corporate and live event work.

Born in Lebanon in 1985, Sandra Tabet earned a BA Audio Visual Arts from the SaintJoseph University of Beirut (2007). She then worked as a freelancer with DB Studios in Beirut on a number of feature films, mostly in production and sound post-production.
Janina was born and raised in Munich, Germany. She attended the Bavarian International School before studying Cultural and Media Studies with Spanish in Bristol. After her studies, Janina worked on several feature films as a 2nd AD and post production manager. Furthermore, she completed an internship at Perathon Film to gain experience in distribution and management of film rights.

MA Screenwriting Level sparked my interest in a career in film. A degree in Video Production followed, alongside work experience in Sheffield with OxyFire Media and in London with RSA Films. My first tastes of both screenwriting and the world of film left me determined to give screenwriting my best shot.
The Masters in Screenwriting at the London Film School is an intensive one year programme with the focus on developing the writer’s voice in the context of a world class film school where we make over 170 films each year. Screenwriting students work alongside directors, actors, editors and producers developing their script editing as well as screenwriting skills and gaining a practical understanding of the course philosophy that screenwriting is filmmaking, through collaboration with LFS filmmaking students. Several MAS grads themselves go on to direct their own short films and features.
A BAFTA Scholarship awarded me the opportunity to study at The London Film School, where my skills were enhanced but more importantly, I developed the belief that a career in screenwriting is very much achievable.
As we know it takes time, tenacity and talent to develop a career as a screenwriter. This is the ninth year of the MA Screenwriting programme at LFS and many graduates are now working professionally across the industry in development, production and on their own projects in companies as diverse as Tiger Aspect, Matador, Kudos, Lionsgate and the Bureau. Currently, MAS graduate David Hendrichs is in post on his micro-budget feature titled IN VAIN, Pepin Weerijn won the Utrecht edition of the 48 Hour project. Selim Gungor’s transmedia drama is being produced by Wiedemann and Berg with ZDF for German television. Kurt Mcleod has recently optioned his feature screenplay Police Station to Palmstar Media in Los Angeles, with Jonah Loop attached to direct, Despina Ladi is working with Tony Grisoni on Paolo Sorrentino’s new TV series project in Rome, where Leonardo Guerra Seragnoli has been invited to screen his first feature as writer/director LAST SUMMER – an Italian-Japanese co-production on which fellow MAS grad Lawrie Doran was script consultant.

ELIE CHOUFANY Elie Choufany graduated from the MA Screenwriting course at the London Film School in September 2014. He received his BA Filmmaking from the Holy Spirit University in Kaslik, Lebanon and then attended several workshops both in Lebanon and Los Angeles including Directing for Film, Cinematography, and Writing for Film and TV at The New York Film Academy. Besides working as a cinematographer, his passion for film and TV landed him several other jobs that explore the different aspects of filmmaking, including directing commercials, editing TV shows, filming documentaries and working on music videos.

Stand-up comedian and now dramatist Mike Wozniak has been commissioned by Sky Arts to write a half-hour silent comedy, which is being produced by King Berg productions and shooting in the spring. Robert Macmillan is developing a psychological thriller with Berlin based indie producer Beth Sanders and her company Crowfoot Films and is an official finalist in the Hollywood Screenplay Contest - a launch pad for several screenwriting careers. Sami El-Hadi is developing a feature with Agile Films that has reached the final stage of the London Microwave scheme, while playwright and screenwriter Kefi Chadwick is writing a new play for the Nottingham Playhouse and a TV series with Greenacre Films and Noho TV. Chris Andrews is working with Cannes award winning director Gaelle Denis on a 3D project and has Creative England support for the feature he is developing with LFS script tutor and filmmaker Roger Hyams. Meanwhile, Charlotte Colberg has written the new feature by Olivier Dahan (La Vie en Rose) and is developing a quirky coming of age comedy for Fly Films and the BFI - with Harry Wootliff attached as director.
Now with the MA complete, my determination to succeed is at an all time high as I work on building a strong slate of ideas. With any luck, an agent won't be too far away.
In addition, Elie spent the last two years learning Japanese because of his incredible interest in the culture and immersed himself in cultural events that would spread awareness throughout Lebanon. He is currently working on several feature films between the US, Dubai and Lebanon and is developing a television serial in Beirut.
I was born in Barcelona. From an early age I have always showed a lot of interest in writing and cinema. I've lived in Spain, Italy and England and I've learned that travelling is my second, if not my greatest passion. During the last three years I've been working as a book reporter for several Spanish publishing companies, as well as writing for some projects, including an animation movie and comic book. In 2014, I graduated with Distinction for my feature script at LFS and after that, took the LFS Directing Summer course with Udayan Prasad. Right now I'm established in London and trying to start my career as a filmmaker. AFONSO KOL ALMEIDA ALLISON SOLANO
Afonso Kol de Almeida is a 22-year-old screenwriter from Lisbon, Portugal. He studied Business Administration and Film Studies in Paris before moving to London to attend film school. He has worked as a script editor and writer for two short films. Currently he is working on three feature film projects, one television series and a short film.
In 2012, after graduating cum laude from UC Santa Cruz in Creative Writing, Allison wrote the YA novel Alexandria at the End - a girl genetically modified to feel no emotions has them restored the day she is scheduled to die; and screenplay Cherie & the Wolf - a woman is locked in a basement with a man who may be a werewolf.

KELLY HERMANMEADOWS Born in sunny California, Kelly and her fair skin have come to greatly appreciate London’s famous grey skies. An admirer of both history and comedy, her work is often a quirky blend of the two in which she counts writer/directors Mel Brooks, Wes Anderson, the Coen brothers and the Canadian sketch comedy troupe The Kids in the Hall as influences. In addition to her MA at LFS, Kelly holds degrees in Musical Theatre Writing and Dramatic Writing from New York University and San Francisco State University. Her thesis musical DIZZY: The Fantastical Musical Tale of Benjamin Disraeli was one of two musical scripts selected for production at the Tisch School of the Arts’ Summer Musical Theatre Festival in New York City. SAMUEL JEFFERSON Prior to attending the London Film School, Samuel worked as a medical doctor for several years after graduating from Newcastle University Medical School in 2011. During his university years, Samuel was heavily involved with The Newcastle University Theatre Society as an actor, director and writer.

Samuel wrote several plays during that time and won the Best Writing and Best Play awards at the Newcastle New Writing Festival several years running. He also won the People's Choice Award at the Durham International Drama Festival with his play Dust.
Being half Chinese, half British, I was fortunate enough to live and study in both Penang (Malaysia) and London. Now, having finished my education with an MA from the London Film School, I feel assured that the course has instilled in me the right confidence and work ethic to continue learning in the industry. I am a screenwriter, story developer and aspiring writer-producer now seeking the opportunity to work in TV and feature film – more specifically, traditional drama – and that is simply because nothing motivates me more than a great story put to screen. Samuel's one act play Cannes was taken to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it received glowing reviews praising Samuel's writing in particular. After making a decision to leave full time medicine, Samuel is focused towards developing a career as a screenwriter and currently has several TV series and a feature film in development with a number of production companies. JOE RYAN LAIA Joseph Ryan Laia was born in Los Alamos, New Mexico, to a PhD scientist and an artist. The environment fused together intellect, desolation, art, history and culture. His exposure to Spanish and indigenous culture eventually manifested itself in his work, both on the screen and off.

Ryan obtained a degree in Latin American History at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He combined his passion for history and cinema, writing his thesis on a series of films and a novella by Sergio Giral, making the correlation that the narratives regarding slavery in Cuba were reflecting race relations within post-revolutionary Cuba.
Rebecca initially trained as a lawyer, before leaving to study acting at the NZ Drama School. From there, she worked as a an actress and writer in New Zealand and Australia and directed a short film TICK, which premiered at the New York Film Festival, before moving to London where she found herself lured into the murky world of development. Having spent several years as Director of Development for the Disney Channels, Rebecca decided to return to writing, and attended the London Film School as a way of hothousing herself back into writing practice. GEORGE KELLOCK I was born, bred and still remain in London. Following a BA in Philosophy from the University of Sheffield (and some extensive travelling) I decided to pursue my passion for screenwriting. I'm currently working on expanding my portfolio; writing two features and two TV series treatments as well as developing several shorts with the aim of shooting them in 2014-15. Meeting some great people during the course has also led to several ongoing writing collaborations on short film projects with former LFS colleagues (both from MA Filmmaking and MA Screenwriting).
While pursuing his degree, Ryan spent his summers studying at New York University, University of Southern California and San Francisco School of Digital Filmmaking building a core curriculum of film classes, focusing on screenwriting, cinematography and 16mm filmmaking. In 2013, she attended Clarion West where she studied fiction under Neil Gaiman and others. That fall, she attended the London Film School and wrote the screenplay Ianto Paints the Sky, where the immortal who paints the world's colors falls in love with a misanthropic New Yorker. After graduation in 2014, Allison has been studying graphic novels and writing a comic book, Burn - a girl discovers her sexuality is linked to the frost emerging from her lips. In 2015, she will move to LA to pursue a career in TV writing.

Richard Linklater, Ralph Fiennes and Kate Kinninmont, became LFS Honorary Associates in 2014.

A TRIBUTE TO PHIL MOTTRAM by Moshe Nitzani Phil Mottram passed away on 28 May 2014. He was 82 years old. In 1959, after a career in the RAF as a navigator, Phil became a student of The London School of Film Technique in Brixton. Later on he became a lecturer, course tutor, and in the mid 80's the administrator of what was by then the London International Film School.

Phil was a very special man and a natural born teacher. He loved to share his knowledge about cinematography, music, history and geology. He had a wonderful sense of humour, which sometimes baffled overseas students who had never heard of The Goon Show.

Phil Mottram Memorial Award Phil’s family have made a very generous £10,000 donation to The London Film School to establish The Phil Mottram Memorial Award. The Award will be used to support students who experience financial hardship whilst undertaking graduate studies at the school. Phil’s daughter Kate Snow said, “We would like to support LFS students, particularly those new to London, in honour of Dad's commitment to the students and their welfare”.
During his reign as an administrator, Phil continued to teach Cinematography classes. For many years he steered the film school, sometimes through rather choppy waters, dedicated to its mission to educate filmmakers from all corners of the globe.
