A Day of Remembrance in Ione By Plez Hill Scoop Writer It was a day to remember. More than 500 people attended the Ione Veteran Memorial Park Annual Veterans Recognition observance. They were there to honor Ione’s bravest – past and present. Those in attendance ranged from Ione City Mayor Ron Smylie to Boy Scout & Pack Troop #477 to the Patriot Guard Riders. The Riders stood silently At Attention throughout the ceremony while holding more than a dozen poles adorned with American flags waving in the wind. During the observance, veterans in the audience were recognized for service to their country. Ione’s fallen soldiers were also named during a gun salute. The fallen soldiers are from four wars and are E.F. Forbes and George L. McCall, WWI; Harold Corbin, Mervin Howdy and William Johnson, WWII; James D. Rinehart, Vietnam; and Jay- D. OrnsbyAdkins, Operation Iraqi Freedom. A touching event, which seemed to grip the audience, was the Folding Flag Ceremony performed by American Legion Post 108 from Jackson whose representative recited the meanings of the 12-steps in folding the American

Flag. While several people spoke at the event, no one captured the attention of the audience more than Ione resident Delton E. Walling, CSM U.S. Navy. He is one of 2,100 survivors of Pearl Harbor. During his speech he recounted how he had a frozen broken finger and was not admitted to the U.S. Navy until he willingly and purposely had it amputated. “I am the only one alive off the communications tower at Pearl Harbor on the day of the raid,” he said. “I am the only one to cut off a finger to serve in the Navy.” Walling took part in six landing campaigns in the Pacific Theatre of war. His last was at Iwo Jima. “And this is the reason I say I am not a hero,” continued Walling. “During my two and half years in the South Pacific, my ship was one of the ships that removed all casualties from the beaches. At Iwo Jima we had 412 casualties aboard at 10 a.m. We buried at sea at 8 a.m. every day. In the Pacific campaigns, we lost over 54,000 service personnel. They are my heroes!” The audience continued to listen intently as Walling concluded his speech, “I am grateful for being able to keep their memories alive. They are the ones that gave it

Sacramento, CA, – Dignity Health, the fifth largest health system in the country, and operator of Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital in San Andreas, announced the appointment of Craig Marks as hospital president, effective the week of May 21. In his new role, Marks will oversee Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital as well as five family medical centers providing primary and specialty care in the communities of Angels Camp, Valley Springs, Arnold, San Andreas and Copperopolis. “We look forward

to working with Craig in San Andreas,” said Michael Taylor, senior vice president, operations, for the Greater Sacramento – San Joaquin Service Area. “His focus on quality care, patient and employee satisfaction and growth will be a great addition to the hospital and the community.” Marks brings more than 20 years of professional healthcare leadership experience in acute care hospital administration, operations and medical staff development. Most recently, Marks served as president and chief executive officer of Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, Mo. Prior to that, he served as president and chief executive officer at South Haven Community Hospital in South Haven, Mich. and vice president of operations at Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mount Pleasant, Mich. “I’m thrilled that Craig is joining our team at Mark Twain St. Joseph’s,” said Dr. William Griffin, chief of staff and chair of Mark Twain St. Joseph’s corporate board. “He brings great

insight about working at community hospitals and the important contributions they make to the public’s health. Craig’s leadership, intelligence and experience are most welcome.” Marks, 49, holds a master’s degree in hospital and health care administration from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor of arts degree in hospital/business administration from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. He has a wife, Andrea; and two sons, Ryan and Andrew. Marks will take over duties from Patti Monczewski, chief operating officer at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, who has been serving as interim hospital president at Mark Twain since October. “I want to thank Patti for her leadership of this important community asset during this time of transition,” said Taylor. “Her many contributions and leadership at Mark Twain and in the community of Calaveras County have been very much appreciated.”

to reopen soon Galt’s beautiful historical Brewster building will soon be open again with new owners. Brothers J.R. and Al Majid have 32 years experience in the restaurant business and are branching out. They have another restaurant in San Leandro and were looking for another location. They moved into the valley five years ago and happened by the Brewster building and just fell in love with it. The brothers called the number in the window, and three days later had the keys. They will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and promise to have more reasonable price points than the former Brewster’s restaurant. J.R. is a mix-master and promises to include blended drinks along with all his other fabulous concoctions. Their family will be there to help, but they will also hire some of the old staff back. Keep your eye out for the reopening in the next few days.

Saturday May 12th the University of California Cooperative Extension, along with First 5 Calaveras and the Prevent Child Abuse Council Calaveras are inviting children and their families to the Master Gardener’s Demonstration Garden in San Andreas for a fun event kicking off the beginning of gardening season. Kids’ Day in the Garden will be two hours of concentrated fun and learning focusing on the health, social and financial benefits of gardening. You and your children will

have an opportunity to participate in exciting hands-on and interactive activities including face painting, nature’s artwork, eating from the ground up, compost critters, bug mania and more. Another scam targets seniors

Sponsored by Hoof N’ Boots Saddlery, took place on Saturday, April 28 at the old Train Depot in Valley Springs. Part of the festivities included live mules with guides who gave demonstrations, answered questions and scheduled guided trips. As part of a demonstration, Dakota Smith of Valley Springs enjoys an opportunity to sit atop a mule held steady by Ken Van Konynenburg, another Valley Springs resident.

(KVGC 1340) County residents, particularly seniors, should remain vigilant against telephone and internet scams. This (Tuesday) morning, a senior couple in the Jackson Valley area received a phone call about 9 am, from a man claiming to be representing their granddaughter who’d been in a vehicle accident in Las Vegas. The scammers said that the granddaughter had been drinking and damaged another car in the accident. They claimed the owner of the damaged car didn’t want to press charges as long as he received a payment of just over $2,000.00. The grandparents were instructed to send a Western Union payment to a man in Panama City, Panama. The seniors didn’t fall for the scam, and after hanging up, reported the incident to the Sheriff ’s Department. The Sheriff ’s Office stated that the seniors were listed in the phone book, and that may have been where the scam artists started. Similar scams have been reported recently, usually asking for a few thousand dollars, preying on generous seniors concerned about family members in trouble. Those who suspect they may have been victims of such a scam are asked to call the Sheriff ’s Office.

Free cholesterol tests offered for Calaveras County women (KVGC 1340) Calaveras County women now have the opportunity for free cholesterol tests. According to Mark Twain St. Joseph Hospital, as part of a partnership with SoroptimistInternational, their hospital is offering free cholesterol tests to women in Calaveras County. Mark Twain Hospitalsaid that while other health concerns often get more press, heart disease is the #1 killer

of women over 25. A cholesterol test helps identify women at higher risk of heart disease and stroke. The “Take it to Heart” program offers free cholesterol tests throughout the months of April and May. The pure intent of these documents enabled the United States of America to become the greatest of all nations, a land of liberty which beckons to all who are seeking asylum from persecution and oppression. The eighth fold represents innocence. Innocence implies that one is unacquainted with evil and thus free from sin. George Washington once stated, “The love of my country will be the ruling influence of my conduct.” Americans pay tribute to him and to all those who give devoted service to uphold freedom’s ideals without selfish or evil motivations. The ninth fold signifies sacrifice. To sacrifice is to give up something valued for an ideal, belief or goal. America exists today because of the sacrifices of countless Americans. Many have made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives in battles waged during the Revolution, the World Wars, In Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Afghanistan and other locations around the world. We pay tribute to them and to the firefighters, policemen, soup kitchen volunteers, members of our armed forces and numerous others who continue to sacrifice for freedom. The tenth fold stands for honor. One who possesses honor possesses a keen sense of ethical conduct. To honor a person or ideal is to display respect for them. We give thanks for all who have acted with honor in the founding and growth of America. During Ione’s Annual Veterans Recognition observance members of the Color Guard from American Legion Post 108 in Jackson performed the Folding Flag Ceremony and recited the meanings of the 12-steps in folding the American Flag; they are: The first fold stands for liberty. In America, we are free to own property, to elect our government representatives, to attend the church of our choice, to openly disagree, to travel freely without restriction, to pursue an education and the “American Dream.” The white stripes of the Flag symbolize our liberty. The second fold represents unity. Abraham Lincoln stated that a house divided against itself cannot stand. National unity in the face of natural disasters and external threats, such as those posed on September 11, 2001, has preserved our constitutional republic. The third fold stands for jus-

tice. In America we believe that every person stands equal before the law and is deserving of just and fair treatment. The laborer and the lawyer are both entitled to justice in America. The blue of the Flag embodies justice. The fourth fold symbolizes perseverance. To persevere means to endure, to remain steadfast despite severe hardship and obstacles. The Continental Army suffered repeated setbacks before claiming any significant victory. Yet throughout the brutal winter of 1777 at Valley Forge, they persevered. The fifth fold represents hardiness. Hardiness is the ability to withstand difficulty while remaining resolute despite adversity. The aggressors in World War II underestimated American hardiness. They thought that Americans were soft, incapable and unwilling to endure hardship. Our soldiers and sailors such as those who fought at Normandy and Korea proved them wrong. The sixth fold stands for valor. Valor means courage, the act of defending what is right even in the face of opposition. Nathan Hale, the Revolutionary War patriot, was convicted of spying by the British in 1776. Before he was hanged, Hale displayed great valor

Your TLSN Local Scoop News Clements citizens hoping for community center

The Clements School.

By Amanda Chaddock Staff Writer When the Lodi School District closed down the Clements School, the community was unsure about the fate of the building. That is until members of the town decided to band together and begin working towards turning the building into the Clements School Community Center. “It’s the people of Clements that are really putting this togeth-

er,” remarks Ed Jones, chairman of the committee for the Community Center. Jones notes that the people of Clements tend to come together and support happenings in the town. The planned center will truly be a place that responds to the needs of the community. Various ideas include preschools, farmers markets, and adult education. The center would also potentially be a venue for dance recitals,

bingo, holiday celebrations, and more. As Ed Jones comments, “The school was the heart of the community, it brought people together. In Clements, people are scattered, and it’s a meeting place that makes all the difference.” The goal is to keep the community knit together. The current step of the process is creating a nonprofit organization to receive the school. This includes sending articles to the state as well as creating bylaws. Funds are needed in order for this to occur. Other nonprofit organizations in Clements such as the Lions Club, the volunteer Fire Department, and the Glen View Cemetery, have joined the effort to make the Community Center a reality. Fundraisers will be held as the process moves forward. A meeting for the center will be held at the Clements Firehouse on May 9th. It will begin at 7 pm and is open to the public. Involvement can also take place through the committee’s Facebook page under Clements School Community Center.

By Amanda Chaddock Staff Writer On June 2nd, the Calaveras County Fairgrounds will transform into a world of reggae. The all day concert will feature artists including Yellowman, Bushman, Pato Banton, Mystic Roots, Tribal Theory, and Fortunate Youth. The event also presents an opportunity for local nonprofit organizations. Two or three nonprofit public charities will be chosen to receive five percent of the event’s profits. The organizations will be selected from those that submit their story to the event’s website. The application can be found under the “Charity” tab at www.reggaeinthehills.com. Such an opportunity ensures that Reggae in the Hills will involve many facets of the community. Camping will be available at the Fairgrounds, located in Angels Camp, California, for $15. Added attractions will include unique vendors, a beer garden, Hawaiian dancers, Fire dancers, a kids zone, and more. Tickets can be purchased for presale at $35 or at the gate for $45.
