ists, and even recipe creators now have a special program that will “support, nourish and awaken” the writer inside. By participating in the Literary League, individuals

will be exposed to professionals in writing and publishing, both hard copy print and distribution as well as to the newer age of online writing, formatting and e-applications. The Calaveras County Arts Council’s Literary League’s first event will be held May 4-6 in the foothill’s famous gold rush town, Mokelumne Hill, at the historic Hotel Leger. The Literary League is happy to bring Goldrush Writers, a local writers group, to lead the work shops, teach new skills and improve existing skills. The workshops will teach various writing styles from novel writing to poetry. The writers’ conference welcomes Kathie Isaac-Luke, a resident of Sonora. She is one of 11 critically acclaimed writers who will offer a weekend of workshops, panels, break-out sessions and specialty lectures. Isaac-Luke, who will lead a workshop session on poetry, was editor of Caesura, the journal of the Poetry Center San Jose, for five years. Her poetry collection, Chrysalides, published by DragSee CALAVERAS on Page 6

Judge rules former Ione Councilman innocent in tree-cutting controversy In a controversial decision, a Judge ruled former Ione City Councilmember Dan Sinclair innocent in a tree-cutting scandal in Ione. According to Amador County District Attorney Todd Riebe, Sinclair was on trial in Amador County Superior Court yesterday for cutting down an Ione city tree without permission. The City’s tree was reportedly obscuring a recall election sign on his property. Sinclair pled not-guilty to charges of vandalism and trespassing when he was accused of cutting down the tree. Riebe stated that despite evidence including broken saw blades in the tree that matched blades Sinclair bought at Lowe’s, motive, and opportunity, Judge Don Howard couldn’t rule out that Sinclair wasn’t set up due to the political climate in Ione. Sinclair is due back in court later this month for an unrelated charge of obstructing access of a neighbor through a property easement.

By Plez Hill Scoop Writer Some members of the Valley Springs Arts & Music Association recently met at Common Grounds in Valley Springs to plan for the Valley Springs Music Festival 2012

which will take place from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 26 at The Terrace. In attendance at the meeting were, front row - left to right, Marti Crane, Nicole Markle; back row - left to right, Tillie Soyland, Shell Brodnax, Karen Wal-

lace and VSCAMA President Zerrall McDaniel. During the meeting it was decided the Calaveras Music and Arts departments for Toyon Middle and Calaveras High schools will be two of the festival’s benefactors. A portion of the festival’s proceeds are to benefit local youth organizations. Volunteers are needed at the festival for security, selling T-shirts and manning the ticket booth. To volunteer, please contact Shell Brodnax at 209-6235809. The festival will feature three music groups: Skynnyn Lynnyrd, Reunion and the Erin McKinney Band. Dancing, food, crafts, vendors, beer and wine will also be part of this fun-packed event. Tickets are only $10 and are tax deductible. Children uner 10 are FREE with a paid adult admission. For more information on the festival go to www.ValleySprings.Music.org. Tickets can be purchased in advance in Valley Springs at the Health Habit, Showtime Video and Umpqua Bank.

Republican or Democrat, come out and meet Ricky Gill, candidate for Congress. His district will include both Lodi and Galt. Bring your friends and neighbors for a Meet and Greet with Ricky at Galt’s Brewster Building, 201 4th Street, upstairs. Come meet him and shake his hand. The event is Tuesday April 24th 2012 and starts at 5:30pm and runs till 7:00pm. Liz Aguire and Steve Holman will be the hosts. Ricky Gill is a candidate for Congress in California’s 9th District, which includes portions of San Joaquin County, East Contra Costa County, and South Sacramento County. Born and raised in Lodi, Ricky is a small business owner, a family farmer, and a former member of the California State Board of Education. His campaign has been featured in publications including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle, National Journal and Politico.

AG organizations to hold Candidates nights The Calaveras County Farm Bureau, Calaveras County Cattlemen’s Association, Calaveras Grown and the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance are joining forces to hold candidates nights in each of the three supervisorial districts being contested in June. These candidate’s nights will begin with District 4 on Monday April 30th at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds located at 101 Frogtown Road, Angels Camp. District I candidates night will be held on Wednesday, May 2nd at the San Andreas Town Hall located at 24 Church Hill Rd in San Andreas, the District 2 candidates night

will be held on Thursday, May 3rd at the Mokelumne Hill Elementary School Gymnasium located at 8350 Highway 26 in Mokelumne Hill All three events will get underway promptly at 7:00 p.m. According to Toni Ann Fischer, President of the Calaveras County Farm Bureau this may be one of the most important local elections for the agricultural industry of our time. “ With three seats up for grabs, we could see a majority of new Board Members come next January,” she said. Mrs. Fischer further stated the county’s agricultural organizations and their

members are looking forward to hearing the views of all the prospective supervisors on land use and where they see agriculture fitting in the big picture. Robert Garamendi who has spearheaded a group of agriculture, timber and mining interests known as the Agricultural Coalition and a member of the Calaveras Cattlemen’s Association said these supervisorial elections are of great importance to the Ag Industry. “The Ag Coalition has been working on an Agriculture, Forestry and Mineral Element for the new County General Plan for

well over two years. If the current Board is not able to adopt the new General Plan by the end of 2012, that responsibility will fall to whoever is elected to take over in January,” he said. Garamendi went on to say that even if the General Plan is adopted prior to the current Board leaving office, there is still the matter of revising the zoning codes to align with the General Plan. Garamendi agrees with Fischer that these local elections are of extreme importance to the agricultural community and the future viability of the industry. In addition to focusing on the

supervisor races, time will also be allotted for the candidates who are vying for District Attorney. Rural crime and appropriate penalties for those crimes are also of great importance to everyone involved in agriculture. Fischer said while these candidates nights may have a specific focus on issues important to agriculture, ANYONE interested in hearing the candidates position on various issues are invited to attend and are encouraged to submit questions, which will be vetted by the Ag organizations before being presented to the candidates.

As Ken Deaver stoops his broad shoulders to uncork a bottle of Zinfandel, wearing his trade-mark denims and cowboy hat, and you soon learn that Ken knows his wines, and his grapes. A drive over Deaver’s 300 acres will take you past 140-year-old Zinfindel vines and eight acres of Mission vines, so called because they were brought from Mexico by the Jesuits and Franciscans. The Deaver mission vines were planted around 1854 by Ken Deaver’s great grandfather John A. Davis. His son, Ken’s grandfather, planted the Zinfandel two decades later. For years, the Deaver’s “old vine” grapes were sold exclusively to home winemakers. The first vintage of Deaver Vineyards Zinfandel was bottled under the “Lakeshore” label in 1985. Since then, Deaver Vineyards has become recognized the world over for its velvety Zinfandels. The Tuscan-style climate of Amador county is also perfect for producing Deaver’s classic Sangiovese, Barbera, and rich Ports. Phone: (209) 245-4099

Calaveras Humane Society gets new website The Calaveras Humane Society is happy to announce the launch of its newly designed website. Created by Laura Bowly, the new site offers easier navigation of services, products and events offered by the CHS. The new site is a single integrated site and incorporates not only a listing, but also a search function for adoptable animals, as well as links to Facebook, Twitter and You Tube. “The CHS couldn’t be more excited about the website renovation,” said Bob Seiler, CHS president. “Laura Bowly is a gifted web designer and the new site is more amazing than we could have imagined,” The CHS won the website renovation in a contest presented by Laura Bowly Design. “(The CHS) is run by a dedi-

cated group of volunteers and relies entirely on donations to support the many valuable programs they offer Calaveras County residents. It is truly a labor of love,” said Bowly. “The letters I received on behalf of the Humane Society were heart-warming. It was obvious that the work you do there means a tremendous amount to the community, and I’m looking forward to being a part of that.” “We are truly honored to receive such a gracious donation of time, talent and artistry,” said Seiler. Visitors to the site can sign up to volunteer, make donations, view the dogs and cats available for adoption, read the latest CHS news and stories, review the programs and services provided by

commit the City to either preserving the historic landmark or paying for its demolition. Both scenarios are estimated to cost about $50,000, so the consensus of the Council was to approve a course of action that leaves the structure intact. How the move is too be paid for remains to be seen, although members of the Amador Historic Society present at the meeting pledged to seek donor support and there are potential grants that could fund parts of the project. The Council also approved a temporary measure to close City Hall to the public on Fridays. The plan will allow staff to catch up on finance related work. The City of Ione next meets on May 1st.

The Council also voted to approve a plan to relocate the Historic Ione Train Depot from property owned by the Union Pacific Railroad to the City’s old corporation yard. Previous agreements

ments Isabel Franke, director of Calaveras Children’s Repertory Theatre. This exciting play will be at the Bret Harte Theatre in Angels Camp. Tickets are available in advance at ten dollars for adults and five dollars for children under 12. They can also be purchased at the door at twelve dollars for adults and seven dollars for children under 12. Peter Pan is one of two plays that CCRT will put on this year. 64 children, ages five through seventeen, will bring the production to life.

“We encourage kids to just be themselves, but yet explore becoming a character that is different than their everyday life. They learn the value of working with a team, overcome shyness, learn to sing and dance, confidence,” says Isabel Franke. Behind the scenes, an apprentice program allows for students in middle school and high school to be involved with directing, photography, voice coaching, props, and choreography. CCRT, which began 14 years ago, is committed to providing a place where youth can discover and build upon their talent. Therefore, no child is ever turned away. The theatre program is funded through grants, donations, and fundraisers. Parent volunteers along with the board of directors are instrumental in aspects such as fundraising and making props and costumes. From 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The Calaveras Master Gardeners always have a wide variety of interesting and unusual plants normally not found in local nurseries. We have something for everyone. Hope to see you there. Master Gardeners will be available to answer home gardening questions as well as assist in identifying, and diagnosing plant and pest problems. A variety of informative UC publications will be available at our learning center. When the garden is not open, home gardening assistance is offered by Master Gardeners through the help line at: 209-754-2880. The public may call the number, leave a message regarding the problem, and a Master Gardener will return the call. The Demonstration Garden is a project of the Calaveras County Master Gardeners whose primary goal is educating the public about home gardening. Proceeds from plant sales support Master Gardener’s education programs, and maintenance of the demonstration garden. By Dawn Santos Staff Writer Just a short drive up hwy 88 you will find one of the best burgers you have ever eaten. Owners Patty and Tim Cucuk opened Mr. Beefy’s, named after their son Kevin, in September of 2010. In just over a year and a half the family owned and operated business has become a burger phenomenon. They fresh cook everything from a basic cheese burger, a cheese filled patty with bacon to what they call “Bubbba”(named after a customer). When asked what is a Bubba Burger Cucuk stated that it stands as tall as a ketchup bottle. 3 large beef patties and then everything else in the kitchen stacked on top. Cucuk has been a chef for several years including a stint at The Raging River Buffet. He drove past what at the time was Sequoia Burger and saw the for sale sign on it and decided this was his calling. Mr. Beefy’s Prides its self on all natural products. And everything
